Toyota unveiled its F3R Concept, complete with an avant-garde sofa in the rear designed to create a lounge atmosphere, at this week's North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The company said it hopes to draw new buyers to the minivan segment with the California-designed hybrid. The wedge-shaped concept with 22-inch wheels is equipped with two track-mounted flat-panel video screens that are controlled by an audio/video/lighting remote unit that docks in the F3R's dash.

The three-tier instrument panel has two modes, one for driving and one for the lounge. When it is in lounge mode, it turns ambient blue.

"In spite of their stigma, minivans are great vehicles," said John Simmons, national manager of Toyota's advanced product strategy group.
