2008 Chevrolet Malibu Bottom Line

The mid-size Chevrolet Malibu sedan has been completely redesigned for 2008. New proportions and very handsome, attractive styling inside and out give the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu a more upscale appearance, while a newly available 252-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 and six-speed automatic--optional on the top LTZ model--brings newfound refinement.

The more popular engine choice for the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu lineup is the economical 169-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which is rated at a frugal 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and comes only with a smooth-shifting four-speed automatic transmission. Performance is good enough with the four-cylinder, but if you plan to haul full loads or take on mountain passes, you may be wishing for the V-6, which is very responsive and much more refined than the V-6 in the previous Malibu.

2008 Chevrolet Malibu Bottom LineThe 2008 Chevrolet Malibu has a very smooth, well-controlled ride and handles securely, though without much performance flair. If equipped with the four-cylinder engine, the Malibu has a fuel-saving electric power steering system, but V-6 versions come with a hydraulic power steering that gives a bit more road feel. The cabin is very well designed, with an attractive instrument panel and materials that are pleasing to the touch. Front seats were among the most comfortable in the mid-size sedan class, and the backseat is quite roomy.

Three models grace the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu lineup: the base LS, midrange LT, and luxury-laden LTZ. The LS includes power accessories, keyless entry, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, while LTZ models get plenty of noteworthy features such as remote start, automatic climate control, a universal remote, and power-adjustable pedals, plus a number of appearance extras like LED taillamps and interior ambient lighting. An integrated Bluetooth hands-free calling interface isn't offered; there's no screen-based satellite navigation system available, either. But OnStar turn-by-turn navigation is included in addition to the other emergency and concierge services OnStar provides. The Malibu comes with a one-year subscription, but after that the owner must pay a fee.

Safety is a strong point for the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu; it's earned the top five-star rating in all of the federal government's crash tests, along with top Good ratings from the insurance industry in frontal offset and side tests. Front side thorax airbags and side curtain bags that cover front and rear occupants are standard, plus anti-lock brakes. Electronic stability control is standard on all but the base Malibu LS.

The Bottom Line:
After years of being a second-stage alternative, the Malibu is a legitimate contender for best-in-class.

2008 Chevrolet Cobalt NHRA Pro Stock

(from General Motors Press Release) Chevy Cobalt Continues Chevy's Winning Tradition in Pro Stock

Chevrolet's ongoing American Revolution came to NHRA Pro Stock with the introduction of the Chevy Cobalt at Bristol Dragway on April 29, 2005. It didn't take long for the new Chevy to earn a place in the NHRA record book. On June 18, 2005, Kurt Johnson qualified his ACDelco Cobalt in the No. 1 spot at the K&N Filters Super Nationals in Englishtown, N.J. One week later, Johnson put his Cobalt in the winner's circle at the Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals in Madison, Ill. In 2007, Chevy Cobalt drivers combined for seven victories in 12 final-round appearances, with Dave Connolly finishing third in the final Pro Stock standings and Johnson finishing fifth.

2008 Chevrolet Cobalt NHRA Pro Stock"Chevrolet's performance heritage promises cars that are dependable, capable and exciting to drive," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. "The Chevy Cobalt puts the fun back into driving by delivering an experience never before seen in the compact-car segment. Chevrolet races to win: Chevy has a strong heritage in drag racing and is one of America's most successful automotive brands. The NHRA Pro Stock Cobalt is designed, built and engineered to continue that winning tradition."

During this initial design phase, NHRA officials mandated more than 20 minimum dimensions for the construction of Pro Stock cars, including the new Cobalt. The new specifications covered such areas as the height and width of the car, the front and rear overhangs and other critical dimensions.

The production version of the Cobalt provided a solid foundation for GM Racing engineers to begin the planning and construction of the Pro Stock version. Extensive research was conducted in the GM wind tunnel in Warren, Mich., evaluating various greenhouse shapes, decks, roofs and fender flares to determine the most aerodynamically efficient design.

GM Racing engineers had two objectives for the Cobalt program: The first was to create a one-piece body, or unibody, that would make it more efficient for chassis builders to mount and work with, and for the NHRA Technical Department to inspect. The second was to reduce the weight of the body while maintaining its stiffness, strength and structural integrity.

After the molds were completed, Five Star created a Cobalt body that was sent back to Ness Racecraft, where it was mounted on a chassis. NHRA inspectors again went through the process of checking dimensions, and at this point the templates were made.

2008 Chevy Impala SS NHRA

(from General Motors Press Release) Both Pro Stocker Greg Anderson and Funny Car driver Tony Pedregon must like the view from the top as each followed up their Norwalk (Ohio) wins with No. 1 qualifiers for tomorrow’s eliminations at the 29th annual NHRA Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway. Anderson drove his Summit Racing Pontiac to both ends of the Bandimere Speedway Pro Stock record with a track-record elapsed time of 7.010 at a track-record speed of 196.10 mph to edge fellow Pontiac driver Mike Edwards. It was the points leader’s third No. 1 qualifier of the season and the 65th of his illustrious career.

2008 Chevy Impala SS NHRA“I would’ve loved to have gotten into the ‘sixes’ and made a little history here,” Anderson said. “We ended up a hundredth away, but you never know what might happen tomorrow; it’s going to be fun. We’re happy so far. We’re very happy with the racetrack and we’re very happy with the race car.

“We learned a lot here last week testing and it’s just paying off this weekend. But it just amazes me, some of the teams tested out here, some of the teams didn’t, you have completely different conditions that we won’t see again all year, and still you have four or five hundredths from top to bottom. The class is amazing right now, so to come out on top on a Saturday night or a Sunday night feels pretty doggone good because this class is definitely tougher than it’s ever been. It’s going to be a battle tomorrow and the winner is going to feel better after this one.”

Bandimere Speedway, set in the mountains just outside of Denver, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and many of the drivers, including Anderson, are impressed with the all-new concrete surface and the continuous improvements being made to the mile-high facility.

Anderson led a trio of Pontiacs in the top four in qualifying as Mike Edwards placed his Young Life/Penhall Pontiac GXP in the No. 2 position with a 7.021 e.t. at 195.62 mph, and Greg Stanfield qualified his Pontiac in the fourth qualifying position. Ironically, both drivers were also under the old Bandimere Speedway elapsed time record.

Stanfield drove his Attitude Apparel Pontiac GXP to the No. 4 qualifying position with an elapsed time of 7.031 seconds at 195.31 mph.

2008 Honda Accord Euro - Review

Bettering the original Euro was always going to be a challenge, after all it’s still a very contemporary looking and highly relevant car. But fortunately for us resting on its laurels isn’t something Honda does and from where I stand, that can only be a good thing.

Dimensionally bigger in almost every direction AccordEuro encapsulates a sporty yet elegant stance with an assertive front end drawing sharper angles and crisp crease lines to a point from its flowing, progressively up swept profile, kind of like a well ironed shirt. The athletically wider track further highlights Euro’s slightly shorter stance and perhaps best of all the rear end is endowed with a softer finish that is more dignified and less boy-racer than the predecessor, again a very good thing.

2008 Honda Accord Euro-12008 Honda Accord Euro-2Inside Honda’s commitment to above average material use and arrangement is clearly evident as are the comfortable ergonomics, tech-savvy equipment levels, sassy appearance and generous proportions. The leather clad heated memory seats offer an elevated level of comfort over those of Euro’s nearest competitors as well as providing decent support and a lovely welcoming feel, which is a refreshing change from the often brash, cheaper leather trims found in so many rivals.

The DOHC, 16-valve power plant has been revised slightly for the new model and now incorporates larger valves, recalibrated VTEC mapping, reduced back pressure and a slightly higher compression ratio (from 10.5 to 11.0:1) to deliver a lissome 148kW at 7000rpm. Best of all with an ample 230Nm of torque on hand at 4200 revs, power delivery is better managed, more linear and impressively smoother than even I thought possible - kudos Honda.

Economy has also improved from what was already considered a class leader with combined figures this time round of 8.9 litres per 100km (ADR). Around town expect mid 9.0 litres whilst on the open road high 5.0L/100km suggests even more is possible through careful driving - and a more run in engine. Considering Accord Euro now weighs in at a hefty 1605kgs these figures speak for themselves and when the 2.2-litre turbo diesel arrives in 2010, Euro is certain to be a world beater.

Starting from $32,990 - $1000 less than the predecessor - the Japanese built Accord Euro is a dead set steal for the money and given the function, application, appearance and purpose is pretty hard to pass up.

Toyota RAV4 SR180

The new RAV4 SR180 brings both sporting performance and high value to Toyota’s compact SUV range, a model that ably combines spirited on-road driving, contemporary good looks and the kind of off-road ability that more than meets the demands of most motorists.

Toyota RAV4 SR180-1Toyota RAV4 SR180-2Positioned to command a price advantage against its main market rivals, the RAV4 SR180 is exclusively powered by Toyota’s advanced 175bhp (177 DIN hp) D-4D diesel engine, mated to a slick six-speed manual transmission. With 400Nm of torque on tap, it is a formidable performer and can move from rest to 62mph in 9.3 seconds. Its pulling power is matched by respectable fuel consumption of 40.4mpg (official combined cycle figure) and carbon dioxide emissions of 185g/km – Band E for Vehicle Excise Duty.

Building on the specification of the RAV4 XT-R, the SR180 is distinguished by its 18-inch alloys housed in bold, extended wheelarches. Run-flat tyre technology means there is no need to house a spare. Dark-tinted headlamps further distinguish the model from its stablemates. The list of standard features also includes Integrated Active Drive, which combines Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Hill Start Assist, Bluetooth connectivity, dark-tinted rear privacy glass, front fog lamps, six-speaker sound system with six-CD autochanger, cruise control, electric sunroof and rear parking sensors.

On sale now, the new RAV4 SR180 has an on-the-road price of £23,045. Owners can add a personal touch to their vehicle with a choice of options, including a Style Pack (£695) with side steps, scuff plates and chrome bodywork detailing and full-map satellite navigation (£1,735).

Jaguar XJ spied

For Jaguar to truly stay alive under its new India owners, Tata, it needs to revitalise its entire range and the large XJ sedan, rooted in the past, needs a complete make over. That’s just what is coming and these photographs by our spy photographers show a mule testing the car that will radically replace the currently very staid Jaguar XJ sometime in 2009.

The best information on the new Jaguar XJ, which will echo the recently released XF sedan, but in an even more radical shape, has come from English car magazine Autocar , which obtained considerable inside information from sources who have been shown a full size model of the new Jaguar XJ.

Jaguar XJ -1Jaguar XJ -2The new generation Jaguar XJ will bring a welcome shift in design for the next XJ, which desperately needs a more muscular look to match its athletic moves.

The present iteration has an extremely capable chassis, but its interior and exterior designs are stuck in the past. The next-generation car will still use the current XJ sedan’s aluminium underpinnings, but it will gain more modern lines conceived under the supervision of Jaguar design chief Ian Callum.

Autocar’s information says that when the crucial vehicle, codenamed X351, begins production in late 2009, it will rock the luxury market.

According to sources Jaguar thinks the new XJ could be pitched against cars as wide ranging as the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Maserati Quattroporte and even the Bentley Flying Spur. Pricing for the top-end model could break through the $250,000 barrier.

Although the lightweight aluminium chassis of the current Jaguar XJ will be carried over, the car’s upper structure has been redesigned. This has allowed Jaguar’s design team to design a car with a coupe-like flowing roofline.

Aside from a low roof and high tail combination, the new car is said to have a narrower nose than the Jaguar C-XF, with narrower headlights (likely to be LED units), although it retains the large, square grille that made its debut on the Jaguar C-XF. One proposal is for the grille’s mesh to be made up of hundreds of tiny Jaguar ‘leaper’ cutouts.

Audi RS5 not just LED lights

Audi, with the current interest surrounding its brand, is preparing itself with the lovely A5, adding the letters “RS” and reflecting the masterpieces that have recently emerged from the German company, such as the RS4, the R8 or the V10 RS6.

The challenge to the M3 is far more explicit now, with both V8 high revs, coupès and twin-clutch shift, but the true revolution is in the traction with BMW choosing rear wheel, and Audi splashing out into all-wheel drive.

Audi RS5New information on this ferocious coupè arrives from Ingoldstat and Autozeitung. The car won’t have much in common with the more easygoing S5, though some technical aspects will be the same. As with what occurred with the S4 and the RS4 B7, the two models in the future will be quite distinct.

The RS should be more sincere but radical, compared to an S, and the lowered body, 20-inch wheels and nasty looking air intakes attest to this. While on one hand the overall mass increases, on the other the weight decreases through an intelligent use of alluminium and magnesium. This should see about 50 kg saved, keeping weight to 1580 kg. Among the options offered will be a carbon-ceramic braking system.

Intelligent suspension has been included, along with launch-control and rear sports differential will be coupled with the all-wheel drive, achieving greater driving feel. Autozeitung anticipates that that at the heart of the vehicle will be a V8 4.2 FSI engine, completely updated with direct injection system, reaching about 470 hp. All of this should guarantee the RS5 performance in line with the future M3 CSL, but at a lower price.

'Bug Jam' Volkswagen festival

Bugs, bangers and the world’s lowest Volkswagen campervan – the three day ‘Bug Jam’ Volkswagen festival has roared into life. This year Northamptonshire's Santa Pod raceway plays host to the annual three-day Bug Jam - a weekend festival of Volkswagen enthusiasts and drag strip racing. And nestled in a tent in the shadow of the drag strip, record-breaking custom car builder Andy Saunders - who recently built the credit-crunch beating Hummer – sits with a determined look on his face, arms covered in oil, and a welding torch in his hands. "I don’t know how we're gonna do this one – I might have taken on a bit too much", says Andy.

'Bug Jam' Volkswagen festival-1'Bug Jam' Volkswagen festival-2'Bug Jam' Volkswagen festival-3The Poole-based customiser – who built the world’s lowest car, and then beat his own record again - is at Santa Pod with his team on another record-breaking attempt: to build the world’s lowest van, dubbed “Van Cake.”

But Andy’s work doesn’t end there. Next week at the 2008 British Motor Show, he'll be unveilling his top-secret project. "Once I’ve finished here I’ve got to get the motor show project car down to London’s ExCel centre – I haven’t slept in days". A cameraman filming Andy’s Herculean task smiles as he overhears. Just then, an onlooker asks Andy how high the Volkswagen Caravelle will sit when it’s finished.

The show-goer looks on in disbelief and waves him good luck, just as Andy dives back in with his welding machine. But modified Beetles and record-breaking vans are just part of Bug Jam – there are dozens of stalls set up alongside the drag strip selling everything from novelty Volkswagen accessories, CDs and modified exhausts. As the crowd gently throngs from stall to stall – and scores of three-wheeled bikes roll past – a deafening roar fills Santa Pod’s drag strip.
The radio announcer screams in anticipation: "That’s got a 2.5-litre Scooby lump in there".

Two customised Beetles are preparing to duel, and the sound of the two strip racers revving their engines receives a round of applause. The steward raises his hands and points to the lights... as they turn green, the two Beetles set off, tyres smoking towards the finishing line.

Bug Jam is at Santa Pod raceway on Friday 18, Satuday 19 and Sunday July 20.

Mercedes-Benz going turbo & hybrid

German giant Mercedes-Benz has announced today that it will introduce turbocharged engines across its entire model lineup by the end of 2010. The announcement comes amid upcoming legislation in Europe and the U.S. which is pushing manufacturers towards more CO2 friendly cars.

The European Commission will need all German auto-manufacturers to reduce their average fleet emissions from 178 grams per kilometre to 138 g/km by 2012. Those that fail to meet the target wilo pay hefty fines.

Mercedes-Benz “All our vehicles will have turbocharged engines in series production by the end of 2010 at the latest,” Thomas Weber, Daimler board member responsible for research and development said

Turbocharging petrol cars has till recently been a speciality of Japanese manufacturers, but demand for forced induction is growing as it provides a relatively cheap way to reduce fuel consumption without a performance loss.

Fans of BBC’s TopGear would remember Jeremy Clarkson mentioning some time ago, that since the Mercedes-Benz S class is the epitome of modern automotive engineering, the fact that it’s not a hybrid suggests that hybrids are not the way of the future.

Well, Clarkson may soon be eating his own words with the Mercedes flagship sedan expected to be offered as a full hybrid vehicle by end of 2009!

Mercedes says the final aim is to get to zero-emission driving which will require the use of fuel cells and electric-powered vehicles.

Volvo gave its C30 hatchback a pretty aggressive look when it introduced the R-Design package, but unfortunately none of that sportiness made its way beneath the hood. Mercedes Benz R-Class spied

Mercedes-Benz’s philosophy of making a car suited for nearly every single person on earth has worked to a degree, except for the R-class MPV. But as these pictures prove, Mercedes is apparently planing to give it another try with a new R-class. This prototype was snapped in the U.S. by our photographers today and wears massive camouflage on front and rear.

Mercedes Benz R-Class-1Mercedes Benz R-Class-2Mercedes Benz R-Class-3It is rumoured the car will receive a front-end facelift in a style more we are more accustomed to, one that might resemble the more friendly B-class people mover. Whether or not a facelift will increase sales is still to be seen.

There are currently four variants of the R-class available. The R280 CDI, R320 CDI, R350, R500. The car retails from $80,835 for the entry model and goes all the way to $129,111 for the 5.5-litre V8.

2008 Autodelta Alfa Romeo Spider J6 3.2 C

(from Autodelta Press Release) Autodelta is proud to present for its world premiиre, the Autodelta Spider J6 3.2 C.

The new Spider J6 3.2 C is Autodelta’s no-compromise interpretation of the stunning Alfa Spider, which collected the prestigious accolade of ‘Cabrio of the Year’ upon its launch at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show. It is Autodelta’s second bespoke model to be based on the exciting ‘new generation’ of Alfa Romeo models, and its market arrival follows the very successful launch of the Autodelta Brera J5 3.2 C just over a year ago.

2008 Autodelta Alfa Romeo Spider J6 3.2 C-12008 Autodelta Alfa Romeo Spider J6 3.2 C-2The Autodelta Spider J6 3.2 C once again redefines the company’s pursuit of the maximum performance and driving pleasure to be drawn from Alfa Romeo’s production models, and is the culmination of more than a year’s intense research and development as well as engineering innovation. It evolves from the Brera J5 3.2 C programme, however, it offers new specification in areas pertaining to a convertible sports car as well as unique and individual styling cues.

Engine
Glorious, powerful, responsive – the V6 engine is at the heart of Alfa Romeo’s sporting ambitions. But time simply doesn’t stand still, and after three decades one of the most beloved automotive masterpieces, the ‘Arese V6’, has given way to an all-new 3.2-litre V6 engine which brings with it fresh challenges for Autodelta’s engineering team.

Twenty years experience developing Alfa Romeos has enabled our engineers to take this new unit and utilise a carefully developed integral supercharging system. First seen on the Brera J5 3.2 C which debuted last autumn, this highly potent package now finds its way under the bonnet of the Spider J6 3.2 C. At the heart of the robust yet lightweight, no compromise integrated supercharging system is the C30-94 unit supplied by Technical Partner, Rotrex. This unit is considered to be the most responsive supercharger available today, noted for its durability, light weight and compact format. It is already performance-proven having been used in supercars such as the world record breaking Koenigsegg CCR.

From a standard power output of 260 bhp @ 6,300 rpm and maximum torque of 322 Nm @ 4,500 rpm, the Spider J6’s V6 engine to now turns out 348 bhp (an increase of 88 bhp) and 430 Nm of torque (an extra 108 Nm), all delivered in a useable, responsive and smooth manner. The Autodelta Spider J6 3.2 C races from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62.5 mph) in a highly impressive 5.4 seconds (standard model: 7.0 seconds), while it hits a top speed of 260 km/h (161 mph); compared to the standard model’s 239 km/h (149 mph).

2009 Subaru Impreza WRX

There will be a whole list of additional features for the WRX, including a new model (called Impreza GT) as well as a power boost for the manual WRX. The biggest update will be the availability of an automatic WRX (Impreza GT), we are unsure whether this will be a five-speed or the four-speed currently available in the lower spec Imprezas.

The all-new Impreza GT will keep the current 169kW 2.5-litre turbocharged boxer engine from current WRX but, the memo says the new manual MY09 model will have a massive power boost to bring it closer to 198kW!

2009 Subaru Impreza WRX-12009 Subaru Impreza WRX-2Although, given the Ralliart Lancer is expected to be powered by the EVO X engine and have nearly 200kW of power, we suspect Subaru may be preparing for a showdown.

The standard manual transmission models will also feature a new suspension system as well as an STI-type front grille. Other modifications include new alloy wheels and the option for a new moonroof in the premium package.

2008 Autodelta Alfa Romeo 159 J4 2.2 C

(from Autodelta Press Release) AUTODELTA 159 J4 2.2 C TO MAKE DYNAMIC DRIVING DEBUT AT SPA ITALIA

Just a week after the Autodelta 159 J4 2.2 C received its world premiиre in Amsterdam, the brand new high performance sports saloon will make its public dynamic driving debut at Belgium's legendary Spa-Francorchamps race track on the occasion of Spa Italia (28/29 June).

2008 Autodelta Alfa Romeo 159 J4 2.2 CThe new Autodelta 159 J4 2.2 C features a specially-developed supercharger system including a Rotrex C30-74 unit, new aluminium inlet manifold and bespoke intercooler, which adds up to drive the Alfa 159 saloon to power of 245 bhp and 290 Nm of torque coupled to upgrades in the area of the transmission, chassis, brakes, electronics and aerodynamics. It becomes the third member of the exclusive J-series model range, joining the Brera J5 3.2 C and Spider J6 3.2 C in our line-up.

The dramatic model is the result of an 18 month development programme that has focused on supercharging Alfa Romeos direct injection JTS engine, making Autodelta the only firm in the world to apply forced induction principles to this power unit. The overall package hones the Alfa 159 into a true high performance saloon, pushing its dynamic abilities forward in every area, but without compromising on its comfort and ‘touring’ characteristics. Top speed is raised to 165 mph, while 0-62 mph is achieved in 6.9 seconds. Exclusive features of the 159 J4 2.2 C include 8.5x19 OZ Botticelli Ultra Light alloy wheels, height adjustable coil over dampers with bound and rebound settings, stainless steel free flow dual silencer exhaust system, mechanical limited slip differential, front, rear and side aerodynamic kit, and perforated discs and new compound pads all round. The order book is set to open on July 1st when full pricing will be announced.

Autodelta will have further models from its bespoke range in action over the two day Spa Italia event (28/29 June) including the Autodelta GT 3.7 Super Evo and two examples of the Autodelta 147 3.7 GTA AM Super. Autodelta's Managing Director Mr Jano Djelalian and the team will be on hand to introduce the new car and explain our products and services in general.

This dynamic debut builds straight on from the launch of the J4 2.2 C last weekend in the Netherlands which went very well and I'm delighted with the response of both the guests at the event, and the wider response in general already. The JTS supercharged demo cars were in action non stop during the two day event and we had very receptive feedback as well as having to start taking pre-orders. I must register my thanks to our Dutch agent Sam van Lingen who organised the two day event superbly, and made it a real success as well as an enjoyable experience for all the guests.”

Honda hybrid spied

Arch rival Toyota has always had the winning advantage having the Prius as its own specialised model. So much so that the name Prius has now become synonymous with hybrid cars and technology.
Honda on the other hand has been criticised over the years for essentially packaging a hybrid car in the same skin as its bread and butter model (Honda Civic). Somewhat confusing the market, or not differentiating enough. After all, many hybrid owners want the world to know they drive a hybrid!

Honda hybrid -1Honda hybrid -2The car which will change it all for Honda is the new Honda Hybrid captured by our photographers yesterday (pictured). We currently have no name for the car as Honda has not released any details. But we do know its based on the FCX concept.

We also know it will cost less than the Civic Hybrid but will use the same so called Integrated-Motor-Assist-System IMA that already powers the Civic.

Honda is working on several other hybrid models as well, with the new CR-Z (CR-X) also expected to be powered by a hybrid powertrain.

Will the Honda hybrid dethrone the Prius? Unlikely, given the years of unchallanged publicity Toyota has enjoyed, but we’d like to be proven wrong!

Mastretta MXT global debut

Lotus has come across some new competition from a very unlikely source which is set to make its global debut alongside Project Eagle at the British International Motor show.

The all-new Mastretta MXT is the first ever sports car to be designed and built entirely in Mexico, and follows the lightweight Lotus mantra.

Mastretta MXTIt uses a Ford-sourced supercharged 2.0-litre Duratec motor which develops a healthy 179kW of power and 249Nm through a 5-speed manual transmission - on par with the best the Exige has to offer.

Built around a semi-monocoque chassis constructed from bonded aluminium, the Mastretta MXT weighs in at only 900kg - 35kg less than the Exige S.

Fortunately for Lotus however, the Mastretta MXT can’t match the Lotus for dynamics, hitting 100km/h in around 5.0 seconds from a standing start and on to a top speed of 241km/h.

Right-hand drive production is expected to begin at the start of 2009 with an initial run of 80 units destined for the UK market at £32,999 (around $60,000 Australian dollars).

2009 Pontiac G8 Review

The 2009 Pontiac G8 is at the core of Pontiac's recent resurgence. This powerful yet refined rear-wheel-drive performance sedan is unlike anything Pontiac has offered in recent memory -- and we mean that as a sincere compliment.

2009 Pontiac G8 -12009 Pontiac G8 -2The Pontiac G8 is a mechanical twin of the Commodore sedan from Holden, GM's Australian subsidiary. That's a good thing, as the Commodore has garnered accolades Down Under for providing affordable full-size functionality in a swift and agile package. Thankfully, Pontiac stylists resisted the urge to outfit the American version with the brand's traditional assortment of scoops, vents and spoilers, and the car looks muscular and purposeful from most angles.

The G8's mechanical merits are impressive, from its range of energetic engines to its impressive combination of sharp handling and supple composure over broken pavement. The new 2009 GXP model raises the performance bar even higher with a 402-horsepower version of the iconic Corvette's 6.2-liter V8. One of our few complaints about the G8 has been the lack of a manual transmission, so we're pleased to report that you can get one on the GXP (though still not on lesser G8 models). In any guise, the G8's BMW-like MacPherson front strut layout and multilink rear suspension yields a sophisticated driving character that's more typical of European sport sedans than large domestic rear-drivers.

The G8 also impresses inside, especially considering the plastic depths to which Pontiac interiors had previously sunk. There are still too many hard surfaces, but the center stack -- save for a couple cheesy Atari-grade digital readouts at the top -- is more than a little reminiscent of Audi's industry-leading efforts. Passenger room is plentiful, particularly in back, where all but the largest riders will have space to spare. The rear center seat isn't so hospitable, however, as the wide center tunnel necessitated by the G8's rear-drive layout essentially eliminates legroom there.

At the G8's moderate price point, the Dodge Charger/Chrysler 300 twins are the only other roomy, rear-wheel-drive, full-size performance sedans available. The Chrysler siblings are certainly competent, but the G8's sporting character sets it apart. We're not fans of the G8's lackluster fuel economy, but then, the Charger/300 duo aren't likely to win any efficiency awards from the EPA either. Bottom line: If you want a large sedan with American attitude and Continental manners, the 2009 Pontiac G8 is in a class of its own.

Peugeot 308 CC - official pics

We might say that white is not really its color, and the three-quarter shots of the front don’t really do it justice. Peugeot is releasing the first pics of the 308 Coupé Cabriolet, the classic open top version with rigid folding roof.

Peugeot 308 CC-1Peugeot 308 CC-2As usual with this type of vehicle, the tail is the most discussed aspect - accomodating the hard top makes for some difficult aesthetic decisions for designers. The rear of this Peugeot is voluminous, but also flat and nearly horizontal, though the grooves creating a V effect, lighten the vision a little.

Lotus Eagle - world’s first photo

The first picture of the top secret Lotus Eagle has been revealed ahead of its British International Motor Show debut. Codenamed Lotus Project Eagle, it will be the company’s most powerful car since the Lotus Esprit and will boast a top speed of more than 150mph. The Lotus Eagle will be the most important new car for the British sports car builder since the Lotus Elise was unveiled in 1996, and should help bolster a significant sales boost.

Lotus EagleBigger than the Elise, the new sports car will be given its official name at its motor show launch party. It’s a two-plus-two seater, with two full-sized front seats and two small rear seats for short journeys, kids and baggage – similar to the layout in a Porsche 911.

And its engine is placed in the middle of the car, behind the rear seats, for optimum weight distribution and balance. It’s expected to be fitted with a 3.5-litre V6 engine sourced from Toyota but heavily modified by Lotus to give it racier attributes and more than 270bhp.

This should accelerate the lightweight Lotus from 0-60mph in less than five seconds and on to a top speed in excess of 160mph. Expected to cost between £40k and £50k, the Lotus Eagle will cost less than the £60k British-built Farbio GTS, which also features a 3.5-litre V6 engine, and roughly the same as the two-seat Porsche Cayman S.

As with the rest of the Lotus range, the Eagle will be built using special construction techniques and composite materials and to keep its weight low. It will be more comfortable and refined than the Lotus Elise, making it better suited to long distance driving.

Lotus has concentrated on making its interior more luxurious and it should feature less hardcore seats and more lavishly furnished cabin than the stripped-out Elise.

2008 Volkswagen Eos

(from Volkswagen Press Release) The 2008 Eos comes with a choice of engines: the Volkswagen 2.0T four-cylinder and the innovative Volkswagen 3.2 L narrow-angle V6. Either way you get plenty of power and the innovative hard-top coupe convertible for as little as $28,915 for an Eos 2.0T and $37,990 for the Eos 3.2 L.

The 2008 Eos 2.0T offers 200 horsepower and 207 lbs.-ft. of torque from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. High-pressure, FSI helps with performance and efficiency. 2008 Volkswagen Eos-12008 Volkswagen Eos-2For people who need even more performance, the 2008 Eos 3.2 L V6 cranks out 250 hp and 236 lbs.-ft. of torque. The narrow-angle six-cylinder engine accelerates the Eos from 0-60 miles per hour in 6.9 seconds.

The Eos 3.2 L V6 model comes standard with the double-clutch DSG® six-speed transmission with Tiptronic®. This transmission is available as an option for those who wish to replace the standard six-speed manual transmission with hydraulic clutch that comes standard with the Eos 2.0T. At 173.5 inches long overall with a wheelbase of 101.5 in., width of 70.5 in. and height of 56.8 in, the dimensions of the Eos enhance vehicle dynamics. A large track width not only looks good, it helps create extraordinary agility and safe handling characteristics exhibited by the Eos.
