Volvo V70 Pickup Concept Rendering

Vizualtech has given us impressive 3D renderings of different vehicles in the past like the Dodge Challenger, Mercury Cougar and the Volvo C30 Racer. Now designer Bo Zolland had created a rendering of a Pickup concept that fuses classic Volvo design with an El Camino body style.

The front of the model has the face of the S40 with some minor tweaks. The rear has the Volvo V70 pickup bed the features Volvo tailights. The car would have the XC90’s 311-hp V8 engine.

Dongfeng Motor and Chang An Automobile Chinese companies interested in purchasing Volvo brand

According to Swedish daily “Dagens Industri”, Chinese companies Dongfeng Motor and Chang An Automobile are interested in the acquisition of Volvo. These companies, together with Saic and Faw, are part of the Chinese Government’s auto company selection as brands that drive consolidation in the sector and make competitive products. They produce about two million vehicles a year.

Volvo has already gained the attention of Chinese manufacturer, Geely, in the past, but the situation is currently very unclear. Volvo is currently waiting on the decision from the European investment bank group on the loan of 445 million euros. Come Easter, the future should be clearer.

Meanwhile, Yang Jian from Automotive News China is convinced that Chinese manufacturers are not ready for the purchase of a company like Volvo, despite their large financial capacity. Problems to arise would be the management of the company, controlled by the Chinese state, and managers not competent in global operations.

2010 Volvo XC60 T6

The small luxury crossover segment promises to be one of the hottest this year. BMW pioneered the trend six long years ago with the X3. And now, the Mercedes-Benz GLK is touching down at dealers. The Audi Q5 will be in stores within a month or two as well. So in just five years, this group has swelled to six. What makes the XC60 stand apart from the crowd? Well, since it is a Volvo—inventor of the three-point seatbelt—safety, of course. Volvo says the XC60 is the safest car the company has ever produced. And considering Volvo's reputation, that's some statement.

In addition to Volvo's extensive repertoire of protection and prevention equipment—including a full complement of airbags, traction and stability controls, plus an optional blind-spot information system—the XC60 has something completely new: City Safety. It's a system that could help prevent low-speed accidents, and it comes standard. To find out how it all works we spent a few days with the XC60 on the roads around San Francisco. —Colin Ryan

Beneath the XC60's attractive sheetmetal is the 281-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged straight Six, sending 295 lb-ft of torque to a slick six-speed automatic transmission. The power is proportioned to each wheel by a new Haldex permanent all-wheel drive system. Volvo says the XC60 can hit 60 mph in a tick over 7 seconds and return around 22 mpg on the highway.

The interior follows in Volvo's tradition of using cool Scandinavian design, mixed with clever ergonomics. The handsome "floating" center stack has a brushed aluminum face as standard, light Nordic oak as an option. Leather trim is standard and there are optional children's booster seats. Rear head- and legroom is more than adequate, while the second-row seating also folds flat into the floor for practical load space. Volvo has culled through research and determined that 75 percent of all accidents occur at speeds under 19 mph—those little bumper-to-bumper nudges in traffic. These accidents may not be life threatening, but they are sometimes expensive, not to mention distressing and time-consuming. Volvo's City Safety system uses laser sensors that can detect an object up to 18 ft in front of the car and will activate the brakes automatically to avoid a collision or at least make contact less catastrophic. Potential buyers will be able to test the City Safety feature at Volvo dealers. And yes, it can be de-activated.

The XC60 will start at $37,200 when it goes on sale next month. And there is a full array of electronics: Bluetooth, iPod connectivity, satellite radio, plus the option of a swankier stereo—a 650-watt, 12-speaker version with Dolby Pro-Logic II Surround. Anyone yearning for a diesel or hybrid version will have to wait until next year—for now, this is the only XC60.

2009 Volvo S60 Concept

A few days before Christmas, Volvo Cars treats the automotive world to an early unwrapping of a car that will shine bright in the streets for years to come. The Volvo S60 Concept gives the car world a glimpse of what the all-new Volvo S60 is going to look like when it arrives in 2010. The coupe-inspired lines that gave the original S60 its characteristic stance are even more pronounced in the next generation.

"The sporty design gives visual promise of an enthusiastic drive and I can assure you here and now that the all-new S60 will live up to that promise. The driving properties are better than in any previous Volvo. The car's technology will also help you to be a better and safer driver," says Stephen Odell. The concept car reveals that the Volvo Cars design team is stepping up to the next level in the development of the products' DNA.

"The concept car's exterior gives a clear indication of what customers can expect of the all-new S60. On the inside we've been even more daring - there the focus has been on creating a vision of the future in the slightly longer perspective," says Volvo Cars Design Director Steve Mattin.

The engine that Volvo Cars has chosen for the Volvo S60 Concept is a four-cylinder 1.6-litre petrol unit using high-efficiency GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) technology and producing 180 horsepower. In a conventional petrol engine, fuel is injected into the inlet manifold ahead of the inlet valves. With direct injection, however, the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber under high pressure. The engine in combination with a range of other technical measures makes it possible to cut carbon dioxide emissions to 119 g/km (5.0 l/100 km).

This rendering from AutoWeek of the Volvo S60 shows some risky style elements that form part of the general visual experiment. It appears that the S60 as a medium sedan is still choosing between a muscular look or a more elegant and traditional sedan look.

The family feeling introduced by the XC60, with its threating nose and elongated headlights, manages to unite with apparent harmony the sports sedan dilemma. Its debut is expected for the next Detroit motor show where it will appear as a concept car.

At the Detroit Motor Show, next January, Volvo will unveiled the S60 Concept, a car which previews the next generation S60, which is scheduled to debut in 2010. After about month ago they released a teaser photo showing the car’s unique Orrefors crystal interior, today we have the first photo of the car’s coupe-like exterior styling.

“The concept car’s design gives a visual promise of enthusiastic driving characteristics and I can assure you that the all-new S60 will deliver a sporty drive like no Volvo before,” says Stephen Odell, President and CEO at Volvo Cars.

“The inspiration comes from the Swedish coastline’s cliffs and seas. An exciting blend of drama and sensuality,” explains Volvo Cars’ design director, Steve Mattin. “This concept car takes our design DNA to the next level. 2009 Volvo S80 Range

The 2009 Volvo S80 has arrived and is ready to expand its presence in the luxury segment with the introduction of a compact, turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder T6 engine to the range. The new S80 T6 AWD model joins the high-performance S80 V8 AWD, and S80 D5 models to offer a range of sporty and economic cars capable of meeting an array of tastes and needs.

Featuring a 60-degree, 4.4-litre all-alloy V8 - and producing a powerful 232 kW and 440 Nm - the range topping S80 V8 AWD uses a Haldex all-wheel drive system, which employs an electronically controlled hydraulic clutch that constantly balances the power bias between the front and rear wheels to ensure optimal road holding in all situations.

In its latest iteration, the S80’s all-wheel-drive system features Instant Traction, which sets a bias (approximately 1500 Nm) favouring the rear wheels when starting on slippery or loose surfaces. This is also standard on the T6 model.

The T6 engine, which replaces the previous 3.2-litre powerplant, offers 210kW of power with 400Nm of torque (available from just 1,500rpm).With multi-valve cylinder heads, twin overhead camshafts and a twin-scroll turbcharger, the response and acceleration on offer is said to be exhilarating with 0-100 times under 7 seconds.

For the more frugal among us, the S80 is also available with a 2.4-litre D5 turbo diesel engine developing 136kW of power and 400Nm of torque to provide sports sedan performance and outstanding fuel economy. The S80 has also had refinements made to the sunroof and power window control switches, the audio system, and also includes sun curtains to prevent glare through the rear side windows and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

All S80s are fitted with active bi-Xenon headlights with washer function as well as Home Safe and Approach lighting systems and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Volvo Reduced CO2-Emissions and Lower Fuel Consumption

One of the world's most advanced wind tunnels is Volvo Cars' new tool in the quest for lower fuel consumption and reduced carbon dioxide emissions. Volvo Car Corporation is the first car manufacturer to own a wind tunnel that fully simulates the airflow around and underneath the car's body, combined with wheel rotation on a flat road surface. "Our 20 Million Euro investment is already paying quick dividends. We have succeeded in reducing air resistance in the new Volvo C30 DRIVe by more than 10 percent. This in turn leads to around 3 grams lower CO2 emissions per kilometre," explains Tim Walker, aerodynamics expert at Volvo Cars.



Translated into fuel consumption, this is a reduction by just over 0.1 l/100 kilometres according to the official EU Combined Cycle. In a real driving situation, however, where speed and therefore air resistance are often higher, the actual saving in fuel can be more than twice as high, that is to say in the region of 0.3 l/100 km. This means that a driver who covers 15,000 km per year will save about 45 litres of fuel - almost a full tank in a Volvo C30. It's an economy benefit that is also appreciated by the environment.

"With a firm focus on environmental properties for the foreseeable future, our recently upgraded wind tunnel is going to be a particularly valuable tool. Aerodynamic improvements to the body and underside of the car will help us cut CO2-emissions across the whole model range," says Magnus Jonsson, Senior Vice President, Research & Development at Volvo Cars.

2009 Volvo S40

2009 Volvo S40 offers the impressive value it used to -- the base price of the entry-level 2.4i has risen by more than $4,000 to roughly what the turbocharged T5 model cost last year. As for this year's T5, now known as the T5 R-Design, its base price has ballooned to $32,350, which pits it squarely against the aforementioned all-stars.

To be fair, Volvo didn't just arbitrarily jack up the S40's price. A number of formerly optional or unavailable features are standard this year, such as Bluetooth compatibility, a six-CD changer and a sunroof. And as ever, the S40 carries on Volvo's tradition of offering top-notch safety features and superbly designed seats. As such, the base 2.4i is still a viable alternative for car shoppers who want the style and accoutrements of a premium sport sedan without the hefty price tag -- although the Acura TSX does offer more high-tech features and better safety ratings.

However, it's hard for us to recommend the 227-hp T5 R-Design and T5 AWD R-Design models, given their newly inflated prices. At about $28,000 to start, last year's T5 was an interesting "tweener" of a car, offering zesty performance and European sophistication for the price of a nicely optioned family sedan. But the 2009 S40 T5 R-Design now goes toe-to-toe with the A4 2.0T Quattro in the price column, despite lacking the Audi's handling prowess and all-around sophistication.

The 2.4i is equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter inline-5 that generates 168 hp and 170 pound-feet of torque. The T5 R-Design and T5 AWD R-Design receive a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-5 that pumps out a healthy 227 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed automatic transmission is mandatory on all models.

According to Volvo, the 2.4i will trot from zero to 60 mph in an unhurried 8.4 seconds. The T5 R-Design accomplishes the same task in a more respectable 6.7 seconds, while the AWD model's added weight results in a 7.0-second sprint. EPA fuel economy estimates stand at 20 mpg city/28 highway and 23 combined for the S40 2.4i, while the T5 R-Design comes in at 19/28/23, and the T5 AWD R-Design yields 18/26/21.

2008 Volvo V70 Review

Volvo has been building wagons since 1953, and has made the genre a specialty. If the Swedish automaker has a small presence in the general automotive marketplace, it is a major player in the wagon class throughout the world. Wagons are a minor sideline for most manufacturers, but they make a significant contribution to Volvo's income.

Hence the third-generation V70, the latest in a line going back to that 1953 PV445. If the name is the same, and the shape looks familiar, at least at first glance, nearly everything else has changed. Like its predecessor, introduced in 2001, the 2008 V70 is based on the S80 platform, but that platform was all-new with the 2007 S80. The new V70 is a touch larger, more filled-out in looks, and has a stronger structure, for improved occupant safety. A comprehensive list of standard safety features, including standard integrated rear booster seats, is augmented by newly-available once-upscale options including adaptive cruise control with collision warning and Auto Brake, the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), and the Personal Car Communicator (PCC).

Volvo's newest inline six-cylinder engine is the only choice under the V70's hood, matched to a six-speed automatic transmission with "Geartronic" manual-shift mode. There is really no need for anything else. In moderate everyday driving the 3.2-liter twin-cam, aluminum alloy powerplant works well, with the smoothness for which inline sixes are famous and a broad, flat torque curve, thanks in part to a variable intake system and both Variable Cam Timing (VCT) and Cam Profile Switching systems. Maximum power is 235 horsepower at 6400 rpm, with maximum torque 236 lb-ft at 3200 rpm. The ECU (engine control computer) and transmission both seem to be set up to maximize fuel economy, with the highest gear possible used in D and shifting under anything but wide open throttle far below the redline. No complaint about that, as even then it's quick enough for most operation. When more go is needed, move the shift lever to manual and mash the throttle.

Volvo C30 R-Design

Volvo gave its C30 hatchback a pretty aggressive look when it introduced the R-Design package, but unfortunately none of that sportiness made its way beneath the hood. Adding some show to the go, Volvo has reportedly created a C30 prototype fitted with a turbocharged inline-5 pumping out 350 horsepower using the Ford Focus RS engine block as a base.

Best of all, it would be able fully put down all that power combined with Volvo's AWD system, unlike the FWD system on the Focus RS. Unfortunately, Volvo has no current plans to bring the car to production, and with high gas prices and upcoming fuel consumption regulations, it would be tough to convince them otherwise.

The 2009 Volvo XC90 – a new band, more sport and more entertainment

The Volvo XC90 premium SUV has received several exciting updates for the 2009 Model Year, including a new lower CO2 figure for the D5 Geartronic1, the introduction of the sports-inspired R-DESIGN and new exterior colours, alloy wheels and options giving buyers more choice. The new 2009 Volvo XC90 is available to order now, with first cars arriving in June. Prices for the 2009 XC90 start at £32,845 for the D5 S.

CO2 from G to F
The Volvo XC90 already boasts a CO2 figure of 219g/km for the manual 185 PS D5 diesel engine and now the best selling automatic version, the D5 Geartronic has a new tax-appealing figure. Now at 224g/km1, the Volvo XC90 is the only premium standard 7-seat SUV available which achieves a sub 225g/km figure in both manual and automatic transmissions.

The new CO2 figure means the D5 Geartronic engine falls below the key Band G threshold for Vehicle Excise Duty, saving new Volvo XC90 owners £570 in Vehicle Excise Duty2 over three years. This model will now also avoid the daily £25 London Emissions Related Congestion Charge (ERCC) which begins in October, saving owners several hundreds of pounds in annual congestion charges as well as qualifying for the 90% discount for London residents.

The R-DESIGN package comprises a specially tuned dynamic chassis, stiffer anti-roll bars, firmer shock absorbers and sport tuned speed-dependent steering. The shock absorbers have stiffer rebound rates and the anti-roll bars are stiffer (front +0.5mm; rear +1.0mm) to offer a high level of stability when cornering.

R-DESIGN adds a new dimension to the Sport styling with 19-inch alloy wheels as standard (with new 20-inch alloys an optional upgrade), quad exhaust pipes, skid-plate, R-DESIGN badge on the grille and rear view mirror caps in silk matt finish. To accentuate the sporty nature further and to create a sleeker appearance, the car is not fitted with roof rails, although these are still available as a no cost option.

Prices
The 2009 model year brings minimal price changes to the XC90, with some models increasing by up to £150 and others decreasing by £210, such as the D5 R-DESIGN.

RWD Volvo C30

While Volvo's C30 has wily charms in its stock configuration, we could see how it'd be even more entertaining with the power being sent to the proper wheels. While we're talking revisions, a honkingly large turbocharger and external-reservoir dampers would be welcome additions, too.

The race-ready ride height is dead sexy, and while it's a crazy thing to do to a perfectly good brand new Volvo, Sweden's Skruffse has carried out some beautiful fabrication work. The use is obviously racing of some sort, and with wide tires at all four corners we're surmising that it's something that involves turning, versus drag racing. Seeing this car's tow rig - a first-generation V70, it all comes together -- those willing to strip the C30 down like a stolen Pinto and rejigger the chassis are true Volvo nuts. We're pretty sure the warranty has been voided, though.

2008 Volvo V70 T6

For starters, the new Volvo V70 only comes in one guise for the Aussie market. The ‘T6’ title refers to the unit under the bonnet. The turbocharged 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder motor pulsates 210kW and a very brisk 400Nm of torque. Power is delivered via a 6-speed automatic gearbox. All these turbocharger shenanigans return a fuel consumption figure of 11.3-litres/100km – pretty modest when you consider the performance!

If the acceleration doesn’t blow you away, the handling certainly will. Coupled with a Haldex all-wheel-drive system, the V70 has tremendous grip through corners. Sitting on 18” wheels with 245-wide Pirelli Pzero tyres, grip levels are prodigious – making it the best way to drop the kids off to school and make it home before your favourite morning show begins.

The interior is typical Volvo – clean and sleek. The quality of materials used is extremely impressive, as is the fit and finish. The cabin is very quiet at highway speeds, indicating good cabin sealing. Front and rear leg room caters for families, with more than enough space for adults to stretch out.

The advanced key fob allows the drive to obtain information about the car’s status, meaning that you will never have to think back and try to remember if you have locked the car, as the key stores the last state.

Optional radar cruise control allows the driver to maintain a set distance between their vehicle and the car in front. This allows the driver to concentrate on one thing – driving. The system can also pre-emptively brake for the driver if it senses an impact is imminent, this further reduces the braking distance in the event of a collision.

Recommended Retail Price: $67,950

Options fitted: Radar cruise control ($3,950); Speed sensitive power steering ($750); sunglass holder ($100); Volvo navigation system ($3,950); sunroof ($2,150).

Volvo C30 T5 Version 2.0

The hatches don't sell in the U.S., so it's surprising to see a new crop of two-box premium cars going on sale. MINI started it with its R53 Coopers; retro flash met modern dash and it sold successfully enough to warrant an upgrade to the R56. Volvo's got the same lust for entry-level customers to its premium wares, so on the scene rolls the C30.

Based off the S40, the C30 reaches back over three generations of boxy-but-good styling to a time when Swedish cars wearing the alchemist's symbol for iron had curves and a shooting brake profile. Hatch/wagon/brake/estate - call it what you will, Volvo's hoping it can call the C30 a success.

2009 Volvo XC60 Preview

The safest car we have ever built - that's the claim Volvo is making about the new XC60. From a firm that has built its entire reputation on making strong cars, it's a bold statement.

Designed as a baby brother to the XC90, an SUV which has been a massive success for the Swedish firm, the XC60 will get its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in a fortnight. It will go on sale in Europe in the autumn, and in North America early next year.

The XC60 features a variety of intelligent safety systems. The biggest of these is what Volvo is calling City Safety - a unique system that can help the driver avoid or reduce the effects of the type of low-speed impacts that are common in city traffic and urban tailbacks. In short, if the XC60 is about to drive into the vehicle in front and the driver does not react, the car brakes itself.

There will be a choice of three engines from launch in European markets; the turbocharged 3.0-liter in-line six from the V70 wagon which produces 285 hp, and two variants of the 2.4-liter D5 turbodiesel, producing 185 and 163 hp respectively. All-wheel drive is fitted as standard, but during 2009 a front-wheel drive version of the 2.4 will be launched.

The Volvo XC60 will be built at the Volvo Cars factory in Ghent , Belgium . The global sales target is more than 50,000 cars per year. The five largest markets during the peak year of 2010 will be the USA , Germany , Great Britain , Russia and China.

Volvo Headed Back to New Jersey

Pack up the lutefisk (maybe in a new XC60 crossover) and leave the keys to the PAG building behind–Volvo’s calling it quits in California and heading back to New Jersey.

Ford’s upscale brand–likely the last Ford European brand left in the company, once Jaguar and Land Rover are finally sold to Tata this month–is setting its sights for Rockleigh, N.J., where it has a customer service center.

Before the Swedish brand was absorbed into Ford’s old Premier Automotive Group (PAG), Volvo had its headquarters in the Garden State. But the grand Ford plan under former CEO Jac Nasser was to combine Volvo, Aston Martin, Jaguar and Land Rover (along with office building cohorts Mazda) to create a new southern California power base for the company.

Aston Martin was the first to vacate–and with Jaguar Land Rover’s imminent sale to the Indian concern, it was considered a given that Volvo would move its base back to the East Coast, closer to the company’s European time zone and a bigger slice of its American buyers.

2008 Volvo Hot Rod Jakob

(from Volvo Press Release) Hot Rod champion gives the very first Volvo a new lease of life

Hot Rod Jakob is a unique combination of classical car-building craftsmanship allied to modern technology and design. In February 2008 the car will be unveiled at the Volvo Museum in Gцteborg before setting off on a tour of the Nordic region and the USA.

Parked side by side, the similarities between old and new are remarkable. The curvature of the bonnet has exactly the same radius. The characteristic windscreen attachment pillar that runs down the body side follows the original in detail as regards dimensions, materials and the number of screws used. Equally identical is the radiator grille with its characteristic mesh pattern and diagonal bar that incorporates the classic iron symbol. The body has been built by hand from raw aluminium panels that were bent into their final shape using a hammer and English wheel. Exactly as it was done in the prototype workshop back in the 1920s.

The entire build is typical of Leif Tufvesson's style. Lean. Aesthetically elegant. Stylishly minimalist. Largely because most of the components have been hidden away inside the body. For instance the springs and dampers, the electrical components and exhaust system. The result is that the body and axles look like they are floating in the air.
