2008 New Delhi Auto Show Learning the Indian market
The Indian auto market, like the Chinese auto market, is pretty new to me, and probably to you too. So in reporting on this show, I consider it mostly as a learning experience.
Oh, sure, We've heard of many of the brand names sold over there, but less so of the model lines offered. However, understanding as to where they all fit in locally, and potentially on the international stage, is at the moment somewhat of a puzzle for myself and most Westerners.
Tata Sumo Grande MUV (multi activity vehicle) is pictured above. It will go on sale later this month in India for around $16,500. I can't imagine what Tata's $2,500 car might be like, after looking at this. GM displayed the Korean designed Chevy Captiva. It sells in India for around $45,000. Wow!
Suzuki, or more accurately Maruti Suzuki, showed the A-Star which will go into production later this year. Maruti Suzuki is the first company in India to produce cars. They have revolutionized the Indian auto market, and currently have over 50% of the indian auto market.
