Nanjing Auto To Launch MG Production on Its Anniversary
NANJING, China — Nanjing Automobile plans to send the first locally built MG TF roadster down the assembly line at its hometown plant next March 27 — the 60th anniversary of the Chinese automaker.
Nanjing Auto bought the rights to the tooling from the defunct MG Rover group in England. The company has said it will revive production in that country, as well as building a small assembly facility in the United States.
But the first cars will roll off the line in Nanjing, where a new factory will have the capacity to build 200,000 MG cars a year. Nanjing plans to send some of the cars as kits to the former MG plant in Longbridge, England, for final assembly.
The company plans to begin assembling MGs at a new site in Oklahoma by 2008.
