Italian Design: Fumia's Form Follows Function

TURIN, Italy — Enrico Fumia is perhaps best known for his design work on such notable Italian production cars as the Alfa Romeo 164 and the Lancia Y, but as an independent since 1999, he also has created concepts for Chinese automaker Chery

fumia lancia The most recent effort from Fumia Design Associati is the Lancia J, a styling study that Fumia says is a tribute to the brand's centennial.
What's most remarkable about the eye-catching four-door sedan is not the swoopy CLS-style beltline or the wavy chrome strip along the rockers. It is Fumia's elegantly simple solution to reducing design complexity and manufacturing cost: common doors, fenders and bumpers that, in effect, permit the right- and left-side body panels to be stamped from the same set of dies.
So far, the Lancia J exists only as a scale model. But interest, at least in Italy, is building.
