Callaway C16

We got so excited at the news of the Callaway C16 that the reality was almost a disappointment.

You see, Callaway is a US company that builds outrageous supercars that it races and also sells to the road-going masses.

When the firm unveiled the C16 at the Los Angeles Auto Show, we thought for a second it had come good on its promise of a V16-engined supercar.

Sadly, it was not to be and the '16' in the name refers to the car being the 16th model from the firm's drawing board.

Still, it does pack 616bhp from its much-tweaked Corvette 6.0-litre V8 engine, and 0-60mph is dealt with in just 3.3 seconds. Top end is 206mph.

Much of the underpinnings are also taken from the Corvette catalogue, but the Callaway C16 uses the company's bespoke suspension and brakes to make it handle properly and stop properly.

The price in the US is $119,865, which works out at £61,000. Not bad value for something with this sort of performance.
