Cab to the future: Toyota FT-MV
Too often the world of show concepts has neglected the humble airport-run minivan.
What of the cabbie and his dreams? Does he, too, not have the right to look expectantly to a brighter, more ambitious future?
Perhaps the Toyota FT-MV can help. Another Tokyo show concept, it's a surprisingly realistic vision of the next generation of minivans, a six-seater replete with individual DVD screens and ottoman-style footrests.
Toyota describes the FT-MV - short for FuTure MiniVan, predictably - as boasting 'a bold, vibrant and stately exterior', which is a bit ambitious, we fear: we're seeing a stubby Mercedes Viano with the new Accord's grille on the front.
Never mind, though - in the world of airport vans, this is a genuinely seismic development. Toyota insiders say the FT-MV could go into production next year, so expect to see a clutch queuing up in the Terminal 1 taxi rank soon after.
