2010 Сadillac CTS Sport Wagon

Ten years ago, a sporty Cadillac wagon would have seemed, well, odd. After all, a front-drive 1998 Cadillac DeVille would have made an awful candidate. But that's the old Cadillac. GM's flagship marque has done an admirable job transforming its cars and its image from that of a maker of soft and stodgy rides, to a real import fighter. The timing is right for Caddy to take on the best sport wagons from BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. With the attractive, all-new Cadillac CTS sheetmetal as a basis to work from, GM's design team has created a car that, if we're honest, looks even better as a wagon.

That means you'll get a choice of two 3.6-liter V6s, the most powerful of which churns out 304 hp. And both engines are matched to a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual. All-wheel drive will be an option. We know that a 250-hp 2.9-liter V6 diesel is being developed for Europe too. And we hope it comes stateside to join the lineup.

The wagon rides on the same 113.4-in. wheelbase as the sedan, yet the wagon is 0.3 in. shorter. And despite the aggressive roofline, the CTS Sport Wagon offers 25 cu. ft. of cargo space. That's more than the BMW 3 Series wagon. There are new 19-in. wheels and a panoramic rear sunroof available too.

We'd like to see this wagon reach out to the fringes of the market. Perhaps the two-mode hybrid system could be adapted to work on this wagon. Even more exciting would be a 556-hp CTS-V Sport Wagon. Let's hope that one is in the works.

We do know that there will be a CTS Coupe coming soon, too—if two doors suit your needs better than five.
