Lotus Rolls Out Collectible Edition of Legendary Type 72D
NEW YORK — Lotus Cars USA is selling a limited edition of its Elise badged as the Type 72D, commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Type 72D's success in Formula 1 in the hands of Emerson Fittipaldi. The car made its debut at the New York auto show this week and will go on sale later this year in North America.
The Type 72D Collectible Edition will be sold in a limited edition of 50 cars worldwide, retailing for "under $60,000," Lotus says. Each copy will be sequentially numbered and documented and will come with a "decorative" commemorative driving helmet and display case.
Gold accents and pinstriping, gold cast wheels, gold and black laurels and badging will decorate the special edition. The car commemorates the John Player Special sponsorship colors on the Lotus 72 in which Emerson Fittipaldi won five of 11 races in the 1972 Formula 1 season.
