Bubble cars take a bow

The Goodwood Revival is one of the biggest celebrations of classic sports cars in the world, but for 2006 the event is also applauding some of the smallest, slowest cars ever built.

bmw isettabmw isetta 2 The Goodwood tribute to bubble cars will feature 30 of the pint-pot motors, and they will even have their own parade laps on the Sunday.

Every type of bubble car will be on show, from the obvious BMW Isettas and Messerschmitts to the obscure in the shape of a Zundapp and a Kleinschnittger.

Sir Stirling Moss is planning to recreate a 1956 news film by driving a Berkley three-wheeler around the track with a period film camera strapped to the car.

The Goodwood Revival runs from September 1-3.

Mercedes G 55 AMG - now with 500 hp

The most "venerable" model in Mercedes Benz's catalog receives a furhter injection of vitality: after the announcement of the m.y.2007 engines for the G class, now comes more power for the engine of the G 55 AMG.

mercedes g 55 amgmercedes g 55 amg 2mercedes g 55 amg 3mercedes g 55 amg 4 The 5.5-liter V8 AMG engine now outputs 500 ps (24 more than the old one), while maximum torque is 700 Nm between 2,750 and 4,000 rpm. This power is sufficient to shave a tenth of a second from the time the G 55 AMG takes to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (now 5.5 seconds). Top speed is still electronically limited to 210 km/h.

The main exterior detail that distinguishes the 2007 MY are the new 18" alloy rims, painted "titanium grey", with 285/55 tyres. Standard spec includes bi-xenon headlights, oval foglamps with a cornering function and new, "more scratch resistant, nano-technology based paint finishes of calcite white, periclase green metallic and teallite blue metallic".

All it takes to buy one is 113.332 € (in Germany, including VAT).

Audi Q7 Wide Body Kit from JE DESIGN

True to the motto of "everything or nothing", the car styling specialist from Leingarten,Germany, customizes the Q7 to create an impressive car. In addition to the muscular wide body kit, which makes this Audi look even more powerful, JE DESIGN is also offering a performance enhancement, new rims and an electronically lowered suspension.

audi Q7 For the large 3 liter V6 TDI, JE DESIGN is offering a power boost by means of a modified engine management system. The Audi specialist boosts the series specs of 171 kW/233 bhp and 500 Nm to 210 kW/285 bhp and 550 Nm, thereby lending this heavyweight ship superior poise. The top speed has also increased accordingly from 210 to 219 km/h. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is improved from 9.1 to 8.4 seconds. Needless to say, the modifications also include a TЬV parts certificate. Neither do clients have to worry about complying with the EI regulations.

Muscular styling kit

JE DESIGN has already showed off its expertise in designing wide body kits with the Seat Leon. This tuning specialist lends the Audi Q7 greater width and an awesome-looking stance. The styling kit includes headlamp lens caps, which lend the car a more aggressive look. Fitting the impressive front spoiler helps to reduce lift. It can also lend the Q7 greater prestige when overtaking. Also, it is possible to equip this Audi SUV with a set of JE DESIGN twin headlamps, which look far better than the original headlamp design. JE DESIGN enhances the appearance of the rear end by equipping the Q7 with a new tailgate skirt attachment, which incorporates diamond-shaped openings on the right and left. In each of these openings belongs a JE DESIGN dual tailpipe from made permanently shiny, corrosion-resistant stainless steel.

The upper part of the rear end is also spectacular, which JE DESIGN adorns with a wing spoiler tail fin including a C-pillar trim. A feature that is sure to get heads turning. The same also applies to the JE DESIGN fender flare kit "WIDE BODY", for which matching door panels are also available. In front of the rear fenders, air inlets lend the car a sportier look, without appearing "plump". JE DESIGN is offering the muscular look as a complete body-styling kit which is cheaper than buying all single parts piece by piece.

Which rim?

Also when it comes to rims, JE DESIGN does not miss a thing. First off, the tuning specialist offers its complete set of wheels JE DESIGN "361" in the dimension 10 x 22 ET 20 (front) and ET 10 (rear) fitted with size 295 / 30 R 22 Y tires. The rims are also sold separately and are specially adapted to the wide body kit. Secondly, JE DESIGN offers a complete set of wheels AZEV "R-Wheel" in the dimension 10 x 22 ET 50 with size 295 / 30 R 22 Y tires. These rims are also sold separately . For rims with a wheel offset of 50, JE DESIGN recommends using its aluminum track extensions, which add an extra 60 mm width on the front axle and as much as 80 mm on the rear axle.

The fine figure of the JE DESIGN Q7 is rounded off by an electronically lowered suspension, which the car customizer from Leingarten offers for cars with air suspension and which finally helps the JE DESIGN Q7 to morph into a true racing SUV.

Brabus saloon rockets to 225mph

Those speed-crazed engineers at Brabus have done it again and come up with the world's fastest saloon.

brabusbrabus 2brabus 3This time, the German loony tuners have shoehorned a twin turbo 6.2-litre V12 engine into a CLS to create a 225mph monster, appropriately called the Rocket.

The engine produces some 730bhp after Brabus has worked its magic, and it also has a whopping 974lb ft of torque.

For road use, the Rocket has a speed limiter fitted that holds it back to 350kph, or 219mph.

Nought to 60mph takes four seconds, but more telling is the 0-125mph time of just 10.5 seconds.

Hauling all of this to a stop are ceramic brakes discs that hide behind 19in alloy wheels.

The tyres on the Rocket have been specially developed by Yokohama to cope with the power and performance.

If you fancy a slice of this sort of lunacy, and God knows we do, you'll have to dig down the back of the sofa for around £250,000.

Sexy Brit's big Climax

Stop sniggering at the back. The Concept Climax is nothing to do with bedroom antics, even if this fabulous new British sports car does have a Climax Control.

concept climaxconcept climax 2 What the Climax Control allows is for the driver to make adjustments to the engine's fuelling and characteristics through a laptop computer.

A great idea, but it's the looks of this stunning new two-seater that should have the punters drooling, not the Climax Control.

Looking better than Ursula Andress stepping out of the sea, the Concept Climax revives a famous British name from motor racing in the 1950s and 1960s.

It's the brainchild of three Coventry University Auto Design graduates, and they have brought the idea bang up to date with an environmentally friendly fuel source.

The Concept Climax will run on ethanol, which is sustainable and has low carbon dioxide emissions.

The fuel powers a mid-mounted flat-four engine producing 270bhp and driving through a five-speed gearbox.

Performance is estimated at 0-60mph in 3.4 seconds and top speed at 160mph, while 30mpg economy should be easily possible.

Of even greater interest to us is the V8 engine option, which will provide even stronger performance in a car that weighs just 546kg.

Light weight has been at the heart of the Concept Climax's design philosophy, and composite materials are used throughout for the body. A featherweight space-frame chassis is used underneath.

To further save weight and evoke a feeling of racing cars from the 1950s, there are no doors for the Concept.

The team behind Concept Climax says the car is not far from being production ready, and they are currently taking enquiries from prospective customers and investors.

Prices for the Concept Climax are expected to start from around £35,000.

Sales downturn for Ford pick-up

The Ford F-150 pick-up is losing its grip on the title of the US's best-selling vehicle.

ford f-150 pick-up
Falling sales have been blamed on increasing consumer awareness of environmental issues and the spiralling cost of fuel.

To counteract slipping sales, Ford has further discounted the F-150, with savings of up to $4,500 (£2,445).

The entry-level F-150 costs from $18,710 (£10,164) and with the discount available comes in at around $14,500 (£7,900).

The F-150 accounts for more than 25% of Ford's sales in the US, where it should sell 900,000 of the pick-ups in 2006.

Fiat, we've ruined your car

It's a case of the public wanting what the public gets with most major car manufacturers. But someone at Fiat has got their market-savvy hat on.

fiat 500 The all-new 500 is nearing production and, while the basic design has been signed off, there's still time to finalise those important details.

So, in its infinite wisdom, Fiat is giving us the chance to spec up our own cars, with the intention of using the input as market research.

Perhaps for the first time in this office's bipolar history, the mental cogs all turned in perfect unison: imagine what would happen if 1.5 million Top Gear readers went out of their way to queer Fiat's democratic pitch.

Go to www.fiat500.com and do your worst. There's an almost infinite combination of classic, sporting and psychadelic accoutrements with which to bugger up this perfectly attractive car.

Fiat is also planning a funky looking cabriolet and Abarth versions of its own, too, so don't be shy.
The first cars will hit our streets at the start of 2008 and prices will start at around £8,000. Before options, that is.

Volvo C30 breaks cover

Here are the first pictures of Volvo's new C30 small hatch, and we reckon it could warrant a place at the right end of Top Gear's Cool Wall.

volvo c30volvo c30 2volvo c30 3volvo c30 4
There's no mistaking the C30 is a Volvo from the front end or the pronounced shoulder running along beneath the window line, but there's plenty of muscular style thrown in too.

At the rear, the tailgate is an all-glass affair, with lights wrapped around either side.

The C30's shape is almost unchanged from the Design Concept car that was first seen at the Detroit motor show in January this year.

Inside, the C30 provides plenty of space for four adults, the rear two getting individual seats.

Volvo promises a whole host of options for customers to create their personal take on the C30.

Engine options include three petrol and two turbodiesel units.

There are 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines, a 2.4-litre D5 turbodiesel, and two T5 turbo petrols with 178bhp and 217bhp.

Ride and handling promise to be excellent thanks to the C30 using the same chassis as the Ford Focus.

As you'd expect of a Volvo, safety is also high on the list of priorities, and the C30 will come with anti-whiplash headrests, six airbags and the option of Volvo's BLIS blind-spot warning system.

No word on prices yet, but the C30 goes on sale in the UK in January 2007.

Subaru launches Tribeca SUV

Subaru may be one of the acknowledged experts in all-wheel drive, but the B9 Tribeca is the firm's first foray into the full-sized SUV market in Europe.

/subaru tribeca suvAiming for the Volvo XC90 and BMW X5 market, the Tribeca comes with a 3.0-litre 'boxer six-cylinder engine with 242bhp and a five-speed auto 'box.

That's enough power to see the Tribeca hit 121mph and 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds.

Subaru has designed the Tribeca for on-road refinement and handling rather than off-road ability, and the car has been further tweaked to suit European tastes.

Prices start £28,995 for the S5 trim, which includes six airbags, 18in alloy wheels, air-conditioning and a six-disc CD autochanger with MP3 connection.

The next trim is the SE5 at £31,995 and this adds leather seats, a sunroof and satellite-navigation, while the SE7 at £33,995 brings a third row of seats to make it a seven-seater.

Order books are already open at Subaru dealers, and the first Tribecas reach the UK in November.

Porsche 997 Targa 4 and 4S

Porsche has officially announced the 997 Targa 4 and 4S. For the first time, the 911 with the sliding glass-roof will be available with all-wheel drive, starting from november 2006.

The glass roof is moved by two electric motors, and slides back in only seven seconds, openiong an area that is up to 0.45 square meters.

The engines are the same as the coupe. The Targa 4 has a 6 cylinder boxer with a capacity of 3.6 liters. With 325 PS, it can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds (0.2 more than the coupè) and reach a top speed of 280 km/h (the same as the coupè). The engine of the Targa 4S is the 3.8 liters boxer, with 355 PS (0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, 0.1 more than the coupe, top speed is 288 km/h).

Before taxes and VAT, the price is 79.000 € for the Targa 4 and 87,900 € for the Targa 4S. In Germany this means respectively 91,483 € and 102,167 €. Below you can find the full text of the press release and more photos.

Stuttgart. In November 2006, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany, will be offering dealers two new variants of the eleven series at the same time – the 911 Targa 4 and the 911 Targa 4S. Never before seen: for the very first time, the Targa models will be available exclusively with permanent all-wheel drive and a body that is 44 millimeters wider at the rear. As with their predecessor (the Type 996), the most striking feature of both of these elegant sports cars is the large glass roof and folding rear window. The Targa 4 is powered by the familiar flat-six engine, delivering 239 kW (325 bhp) of power from 3.6 liters. It accelerates the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 280 km/h. The more powerful S variant features a 3.8-liter engine producing 261 kW (355 bhp). This model sprints to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, and has a top speed of 288 km/h.

Thanks to Porsche’s VarioCam Plus valve control system, the Targa 4 develops maximum torque of 370 Newton meters at 4,250 revolutions per minute. The equivalent for the S version is 400 Newton meters at 4,600 rpm. Power transmission is via a six-speed manual gearbox with short, precise shift strokes. Optionally, customers can choose Porsche’s well-known five-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission, allowing very sporty gear changes using the finger pads mounted on the steering-wheel spokes.

As with the coupe and cabrio versions of the Carrera 4(S), power transmission is by all-wheel drive with a Visco multi-plate clutch, which depending on driving conditions applies between five and 40 percent of the driving power to the front axles at all times. The system thereby ensures well-balanced propulsive power in bends when driving to the limit, and improves traction even on wet or slippery road surfaces.

The outward distinguishing feature of the Targa 4(S) is a large glass roof blending harmoniously with the sports car’s lines and lending it a distinctive personality. A side-mounted polished, anodized aluminum trim strip running the length of the roof frame emphasizes the elegant side outline.

The glass roof is not just a visually appealing highlight, however, but also ensures a light, airy interior. It can be opened in only seven seconds to as much as half a meter, no matter what the speed, by means of two electric motors. The maximum roof opening area is then 0.45 square meters. The roof unit is of two-ply specially tinted glass, which is 1.9 kilograms lighter than its predecessor. Wind noises are kept to a low level even at high speed by a newly developed sealing system. A wind deflector minimizes turbulence inside the vehicle, allowing the roof to be opened even at lower temperatures. The semi translucent black cloth roller sunblind provides protection from excessive solar radiation. The glass roof and roller blind are operated by a rocker switch on the central console next to the handbrake lever.

The gas strut-operated, upward-tilting rear windshield makes it easy to load the 230-liter capacity trunk with rear seats in the folded position. The tailgate can either be unlocked by a switch on the driver side doorsill or by the remote control button on the key fob. Closing is facilitated by an electric closing aid.

The basic euro-price for the 911 Targa 4 is 79,000 euros, or 87,900 euros for the 911 Targa 4S. In Germany, the prices are 91,843 euros for the 911 Targa 4 and 102,167 euros for the more powerful S version (including sales tax and country specific requirements).

The supposed Anti-Veyron from Porsche

There's been some talk of a possible new super-car from Porsche, that would debut in 2009 and beat the Bugatti Veyron's top speed by a couple of kilomters per hour. This got started by english magazine Autocar.

According to Autocar, this new Porsche GT1 would be a road-going version of the Le Mans car that Porsche has been developing, and it would be based on a modified version of the Carrera GT chassis.

Autocar goes as far as showing us a drawing, writing that "Autocar’s exclusive illustration is drawn entirely from leaked official technical drawings of the car". My problem with this illustration is that it is eerily similar to the Mirage GTR concept car developed by German tuner Gemballa (see below).

The similarities between the supposed super-Porsche and the Mirage GTR aren't limited to the looks: the Gemballa concept is based on a revised Carrera GT chassis with modified front and back end.

The super-Porsche might have a turbo-charged version of the V10 engine from the Carrera GT developing 950 ps (or a bigger bore version of the Cayenne Turbo V8 with the same power). The Mirage GTR has a turbocharged version of the Carrera GT engine, developing about 1.000 ps.

The most important difference: the Mirage GTR should be a couple of km/h slower than the Veyron.

So, what is it ? Prescience from the german tuner ? Porsche loving the idea of the Mirage GTR and making it its own ? A misunderstading on Autocar's part ?

Peugeot 207 Super 2000 breaks cover

Peugeot is back on the bonkers pills with its 207 Super 2000. This four-wheel drive missile follows in the crazy tracks of the 205 T16 and 206 WRC.

peugeot 207 super 2000peugeot 207 super 2000 2peugeot 207 super 2000 3 With 280bhp and a rev limit of 8500rpm, this purpose-built rally machine will be available for customers to buy and campaign in national championships.

Peugeot is already testing the car on gravel and Tarmac, and they've even drafted in one of the craziest drivers, Gilles Panizzi, to do the driving.

Not quite as powerful or demented, but more affordable, the 207 GT Turbo goes on sale in the UK in November for £13,345.

This is the first model to use the new 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine developed jointly by Peugeot and BMW.

The 207 GT Turbo will only come as a three-door model, kitted out with 17in alloy wheels, half leather trim and a panoramic glass sunroof.

Mercedes-Benz SLR "722" Edition

There has been talk of an SLR "sportpack" for a while. Now it's here and its full name is Mercedes-Benz SLR "722 Edition", to commemorate the starting number of the 300 SLR that won the Mille Miglia in 1955, driven by Stirling Moss.

mercedes slr 722mercedes slr 722 2mercedes slr 722 3mercedes slr 722 4The 5.5 liters V8 super-charged engine now outputs 650 ps (+24 compared to the normal SLR). The result is a car capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds only (down from 3.8 seconds), from 0-200 km/h in 10.2 seconds (down from 10.6). Top speed is up from 334 to 337 kmh. Below the fold you can find more photos and the full Mercedes-Benz press-release.

The new Mercedes-Benz SLR "722 Edition" has all the attributes of a thoroughbred racing car. Refined in numerous respects, this super sports car has more output, a tailor-made suspension configuration and a decidedly sporty interior.

A continuing tradition: the new model variant SLR "722 Edition" is a homage by Mercedes-Benz to the unforgettable victory won by the British racing legend Stirling Moss and his co-driver Denis Jenkinson in a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR with the starting number 722 (indicating a start time of 7.22 a.m.) at the Mille Miglia in 1955. With an output of 478 kW/650 hp and a corresponding performance, the new super sports car, which goes on sale on July 11, will not only make the hearts of car enthusiasts beat faster.

The supercharged 5.5-litre V8 engine in the "722 Edition", which is hand-built in the AMG engine shop in Affalterbach, generates 478 kW/650 hp. The particular strengths of this high-performance engine are immediate response to movements of the accelerator, highly emphatic torque build-up and an unmistakable V8 sound. The performance figures are outstanding even for a high-end sports car: the "722 Edition" accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in only 3.6 seconds, and 200 km/h is reached in just 10.2 seconds. The maximum speed (337 km/h) is above the 334 km/h previously achieved by the SLR.

Handling characteristics worthy of the racetrack are also provided by the sophisticated suspension, with 19-inch light-alloy wheels, a stiffer damper configuration and a ten-millimetre-lower body. Larger brake discs with a diameter of 390 mm ensure excellent braking performance.

Discreet visual modifications mark the SLR "722 Edition" out as special, in line with the wishes of the enthusiastic gentleman drivers and wealthy sports car collectors who make up the core target group. The modified front spoiler with an air splitter, as well as the rear diffuser, improve both the aerodynamics and contact pressure at high speeds, and reflect the transfer of cutting-edge technology from motor racing. At the same time, the use of clear-lacquered carbon as an extremely strong yet lightweight material symbolises the practicality of these technical features. Bucket-type sports seats upholstered in leather/Alcantara provide outstanding lateral support, while the grippier racing steering wheel with a hunting-leather lining, gearshift paddles and black carbon highlights lend a thoroughbred racing touch to the interior.

Exclusive "SLR. Club" for SLR owners

Before the sales release date, customers and selected guests will have the advance opportunity to appraise the new SLR "722 Edition". This is to mark the foundation of the worldwide "SLR. Club" at the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet, southern France. As an ultra-exclusive community of which SLR customers automatically become members, the "SLR Club" provides an attractive platform for outstanding events related to the SLR, as well as numerous other benefits. Another exciting feature is the clubs SLR Safety & Speed Academy, which offers special driver training courses and seminars. David Coulthard, Jochen Mass, Klaus Ludwig, Chris Goodwin and Christina Surer are among the highly skilled and well-known instructors.

Alfa shows off Spiders

Alfa Romeo is taking its top off for the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which runs from today (July 7-9).

The new Alfa Spider is based on the Brera coupe and goes on sale in the UK at the beginning of 2007.

The other star of Alfa's Goodwood display is the 8C Spider concept, which the Italian firm says is merely a design exercise at the moment.

However, Alfa insiders tell us the 8C Spider will join the 8C coupe as a limited production model sometime in 2008.

Alfa also has a full complement of historic road and race cars on hand to wow the crowds.

Murano GT-C unveiled

Nissan teased us with a drawing of the Murano GT-C, but now we have in our mitts pictures of the real thing.

nissan murano GT-Cnissan murano GT-C 2nissan murano GT-C 3 Looking even more mean and moody than the original picture, the GT-C has been developed in the UK at Nissan's technical centre in Bedfordshire.

It's only a concept vehicle at the moment, but let's hope the GT-C makes it into production because it has a turbocharger to help the 3.5-litre V6 engine realise 335bhp.

This sort of power helps the GT-C see off 0-60mph in seven seconds and head on to 140mph.

To keep up with the performance, this one-off Murano has uprated suspension and brakes to provide handling to match its go.

Finishing off the GT-C's dynamic and stylish look are 22in alloys, while inside a unique black and bronze lacquer is used on the trim.

As well as the Strathspey leather, there's a hand-blown glass gear lever and trinket tray in the centre console in tribute to the island of Murano off the Venetian coast in Italy.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8 hits the streets

Pointless questions fascinate us, and we'd love to meet the person who asked '"How do you make a 4x4 incapable of going off-road ? "

jeep srt The answer to that question is just as fascinating and comes in the form of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8.

Packing 420bhp and 420lb ft of good ol' US brawn from its 6.1-litre V8 engine, the SRT-8 dismisses 0-62mph in just five seconds before heading on to that 152mph top end.

Jeep says the four-wheel-drive system and suspension have been set up for fast road and track use and is not intended for off-road motoring.

Sitting on 20in alloy wheels, the SRT-8 is factory-blinged, and there are high-performance Brembo brakes hiding behind the huge wheels.

There are also unique front and rear bumpers to help reduce aerodynamic lift.

Pointless perhaps, but the Cherokee SRT-8 starts at £40,585, so it's a good bit cheaper than most of its pointless rivals.

Mitsubishi's chic new Outlander

Mitsubishi will be strutting its catwalk stuff at the Paris motor show in September when it shows off its new Outlander Concept.

mitsubishi outlandermitsubishi outlander 2The new 4x4 aims to improve dramatically on its predecessor's comfort and refinement when it goes on sale in the spring of 2007.

Although the show car is called a concept, it's a derivative of a Mitsubishi SUV that has been on sale in Japan since 2005.

The Outlander Concept at Paris is a version of the Japanese model that has been modified to better suit European roads.

The 138bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine is supplied by Volkswagen and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and four-wheel drive.

The show car sits on 20in alloy wheels, but production models will come with 16- or 17in wheels.

BMW X5 2007 - leaked photo ?

According to Inside Line, BMW seems to be persecuted by leaks, lately. After the 3-Series Coupe and the M6 Cabrio, a picture of thenew BMW X5 has been leaked before time. The strange thing is that this picture is very dissimilar to pretty much all the spy-shots seen lately

bmw x5 2007Glass supplier (Saint-Gobain Autover), maybe anxious to exalt the role it has played in the developmente of the upcoming X5 II, has posted a photo and a brief blurb on its site:

"The second-generation X5 model will be larger and more versatile, with a seven-seat interior option; it will feature all-new suspension, revised diesel engines and new [gasoline] V8s".

As pertains the "revised diesel engines", it seems probable that we'll see the latest powerstep for the 3.0d (231 ps, instead of the 218 ps of the current X5) and the new 3 liters sequential bi-turbo with 286 ps seen on the just announced X3 3.0sd.

Among gasoline engines, the entry-level should be the 6-inline 3.0si with 272 ps, followed (maybe?) by the 6-inline bi-turbo with 306 ps. Next up the "new V8s": german magazine Auto Bild writes about two 4.4-liters engines, one naturally aspirated with 394 ps and one turbo-charged with power enough to rival the Cayenne Turbo S (521 ps).

Honda Civic Type-S

Honda has announced the Civic Type-S: that's the name for the 3-door version of the new Civic which will be shown at the British International Motor Show on the 18th of July.

Honda Civic Type-SHonda Civic Type-S 2Honda Civic Type-S 3Honda Civic Type-S 4Honda Civic Type-S 5 The Civic Type-S will be available from the beginning of 2007 with two engines (1.8 i-VTEC and 2.2 i-CTDi, both with 140 ps) in two different model grades, Type-S (already with with pretty rich specifications) and Type-S Plus.

The silhoutte and external size is unvaried, compared to the 5-door Civic, but the Type-S will have a 20 mm wider rear track and different suspension settings, to give it a sportire character.

Below the fold you can find more images and the complete Honda press release. Now the wait is on for the Paris motor show, where Honda will show the production version of the Civic Type-R.

Honda Motor Europe Ltd. today announced the new Civic TYPE S, a 3-door hatchback which is the latest model in the transformation of Honda's iconic C-segment brand into a premium, individual, sporty range. Sales are expected to commence in early 2007.

This new model makes its world debut at the British International Motor Show, to be held at ExCeL, London, in July 2006 (Press day: 18 July; Public days: 20-30 July).

Sharing the same dynamic silhouette and overall dimensions as the acclaimed 5-door model, the Civic TYPE S further emphasizes the Civic's sporty and fun-to-drive direction to appeal to a young audience. The styling is therefore more assertive and the suspension is tuned for sharper chassis dynamics, with revised spring and damper settings and a 20mm wider rear track.

Further emphasising its sporty nature, the Civic TYPE S is powered by either a 1.8 litre petrol engine or a 2.2 litre diesel engine, both of which produce 103kW/140PS and are mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Two model grades will be offered. The extensive specification of the standard TYPE S includes 17 inch alloys, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), air conditioning, cool box, remote audio controls and side curtain airbags. The TYPE S Plus adds dual zone air conditioning, cruise control, front fog lights, retractable mirrors, automatic wipers and automatic headlamps. Certain markets also gain HID headlamps, heated front seats and a panorama glass roof.

Sculpted and fully integrated side skirts flare outwards towards front and rear wheels and seamlessly blend into the wheel arch surrounds, familiar from the 5-door model. These in turn flow into the front and rear spoilers to complete the lower body structure, all of which is finished in a gun metallic colour for added visual appeal. The deep front air intake, together with the 17 inch alloy wheels and wider rear track provide the TYPE S with a particularly muscular and planted look.

Black Alcantara seating and a leather trimmed steering wheel, both with silver stitching, plus aluminium pedals, set the tone for the equally sporty interior. Large seat bolsters provide reassuring support during cornering.

The cabin is focused around the unique and visually arresting Dual Link concept fascia introduced on the 5-door model. Key driving information, including vehicle speed, is displayed in the upper part of the instrument panel, while other information is provided in the lower section. This design is particularly effective in presenting information without compromising the driver's concentration on the road.

The Civic's coupe-like styling has not compromised the cabin space. The interior instead succeeds in providing a high degree of flexibility and passenger accommodation. The distance between the hip point of front and rear passengers at 803 mm, for example, equates to that in higher segment cars.

The rear seats also incorporate Honda's familiar one-motion, dive-down feature that instantaneously creates a flat loading space of a spacious 485 litres, mirroring that of the 5-door model. The cargo floor can also be dropped down to reveal an under-floor compartment. A centrally positioned fuel tank located beneath the front seats, rather than impinging on the luggage area, plays a key role in achieving this packaging efficiency.

The comprehensive safety features include ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution with brake assist, VSA, front and side SRS airbags, full length side curtain airbags, double seatbelt pre-tensioners on both front seats and active headrests. The instrument display also features an innovative seatbelt reminder for both front and rear seat passengers. Honda anticipates a Euro NCAP result of 5 stars for front and side impact safety, 3 stars for pedestrian safety and 4 stars for child protection safety, making it one of the safest cars in its class.

The Civic TYPE S forms the basis for the forthcoming Civic TYPE R, which is scheduled to be launched in early 2007. While the reputation of its predecessor makes it a tough act to follow, the new model will offer greater sophistication without compromising the TYPE R philosophy of exhilarating performance achieved through advanced engineering. More details will be provided when the Civic TYPE R makes its debut at the Paris Motor Show later this year.

Civic Type-R teaser

Honda is determined to tease us for as long as possible with its forthcoming Civic Type-R.

honda civic Type-R
This official picture shows off the hot hatch's aggressive looks, based on the newly released three-door Civic body.

The Type-R does away with the standard car's front foglights to use the spaces for air intakes to the hot hatch's 197bhp 2.0-litre engine.

There are also beefy side skirts to lower the car's stance and a large rear spoiler to give the Type-R a mean look.

The engine has the same 197bhp as its predecessor, but Honda tells us performance will be quicker for the new Type-R, thanks to improved mid-rev power and different gearing for the six-speed manual gearbox.

A GT trim will be offered for the Type-R to offer luxury goodies such as climate control and rain-sensing wipers.

For those who don't want the hard core Type-R, the Type-S has similar looks but comes with a 138bhp 1.8-litre petrol engine or Honda's 2.2-litre turbodiesel unit.

Performance may not be so vivid, but the steering has been sharpened up and the rear track widened by 20mm.

The Type-S and other three-door Civic models make their debut at the British motor show from July 20-30, but we'll have to wait until March 2007 for the Type-R.

Mercedes CL Class - more photos

We're still waiting for Mercedes-Benz to come out with the official press material for the new CL Class, but meanwhile photos and details keep emerging.

mercedes CLmercedes CL 2mercedes CL 3mercedes CL 4mercedes CL 5The top of the range coupe from Mercedes-Benz will be on European markets next autumn, and for the first time it will be longer than 5 meters: it is 5.07 meters long (+7.5 cm), 1.87 meters wide (+1,4 cm) and 1.42 meters high (+2 cm). The trunk has a capacity of 490 liters.

The CL is more of a luxury-oriented Coupe, as the photos of the interior show. Standard specifications are similar to those of the S-Class, including Active Body Control. As optionals one can have various radar-based gadgets, such as the Parking Guidance System (to measure parking spaces), Active Cruise Control (it adapts the cruise speed when vehicels in front slow-down or accelerate), Pre-Safe (brakes in case an obstacle is present) and the infrared night vision system.

Initially there will be two engine options, one a V8 the other a V12 (no V6, no diesel, at least for now). The "base" model is the CL 500, with the 5.5 liters V8 engine (388 ps / 530 Nm) that takes 5,4 seconds to go from 0-100 km/h, 5.9 seconds from 60-120 km/h. The average fuel consumption is 12.1 liters/100 km on the combine cycle.

Going up, the CL 600, with the 5.5 liters V12 bi-turbo engine (517 ps / 830 Nm), weighing 2.185 kg. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, from 60-120 km/h in 4.8 seconds, with an average fuel consumption of 14.3 liters/100 km on the combined cycle.

Top speed is 250 km/h for both models, electronically limited. Starting price in Europe wll be about 110.000 €.

Ford lifts lid on Focus drop top

Ford is blowing the lid on the Focus with the arrival of the Coupe-Cabriolet model.

ford focus 1ford focus 2ford focus 3After much huffing and puffing about its Vignale concept, shown at the Paris Motor Show in 2004, we've been waiting for the Focus drop top.

We'll have to wait a little longer as the car does not go on sale in the UK until October, but we do get a first look at the Focus Coupe-Cabriolet's world premiere at the British Motor Show from July 20-30.

Italian design house Pininfarina has been closely involved with the design and the collaboration has resulted in sleek lines for the open top, with a unique rear end to accommodate the folding metal roof.

The interior has also come in for some re-working to distinguish it from lesser Focus models, but space has been preserved in the rear to seat four people.

Ford is claiming best in class practicality and cites 534 litres of luggage space with the roof up and 248-litres with the roof folded. Under the bonnet, engines are taken from the usual Focus staples.

The entry-level Coupe-Cabriolet will use a 1.6-litre petrol engine, with a two-litre petrol and 134bhp two-litre turbodiesel completing the line-up.

Ford is keeping schtum about prices, but we've been told they will be very competitive compared to a Vauxhall Astra TwinTop's.
