2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 Rocks 600 Ponies

DETROIT — You just knew that with the arrival of the Ford Shelby GT500 and rumors of Chevrolet's "Blue Devil" Corvette, Dodge wasn't about to let the Viper slip into limbo.

With engineering assistance from Ricardo and McLaren, the Viper's V10 engine has been extensively reworked and the displacement bumped from 8.3 to 8.4 liters. The engine now makes 600 horsepower — an increase of 90 hp over last year — and 560 pound-feet of torque.

The '08 Viper is fitted with the latest-generation Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual gearbox. Dodge says 0-60 acceleration is shaved to less than 4 seconds, with 0-100-0 acceleration and braking accomplished in an astonishing 12 seconds.

In addition to massive Brembo brakes and a new GKN Visco-Lok speed-sensing, limited-slip differential, the '08 Viper rides on Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires — 18s in front, 19s in the rear. Three different polished, forged-aluminum wheels are available, including a new Razor five-spoke design.

Dodge has limited the exterior changes to a new hood with a larger scoop and louvers to improve airflow. There are several new exterior and interior color schemes.

The '08 Viper coupe and roadster go on sale next summer.

Suzuki Plans Growth Further Growth in Europe

PARIS — Suzuki sold just over 233,000 cars and SUVs in Europe between January and November 2006, making it number four among Japanese automakers in Europe.

suzuki splashThe company intends to nearly double that volume by 2011, according to published reports. For 2008, Suzuki will introduce a production version of the Splash concept that was unveiled at the 2006 Paris auto show. This new minicar will be produced at Suzuki's Hungarian facility, where capacity will be expanded to 300,000 units by the end of 2007.

Suzuki also plans to introduce other new models in Europe, including a mini SUV in 2009 and an upper-midsize car two years later. Also, the China-built sedan version of the popular SX4 will appear in Europe by 2008.

2008 Nissan Rogue Fits In

DETROIT — The best car names often get recycled. Take the Pacer, which was a version of Ford's ill-starred Edsel; it later wound up on an ungainly, egg-shaped model from American Motors. But who ever thought an old Rambler name might be resurrected by Nissan?

2008 Nissan RogueNissan's 2008 Rogue, appropriately enough, is a compact crossover that's aimed at the Honda CR-V, the Jeep Compass and the upcoming 2008 Mazda CX-5. Built in Japan, it will be powered by a 170-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a continuously variable transmission. The Rogue shares its compact platform with the Sentra sedan, and will be offered with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive.

Standard hardware will include ABS, side and side curtain airbags, traction and stability control, and electric power steering.

The five-passenger Rogue, which makes its debut in January at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, goes on sale next September as a 2008 model. Prices will start at around $20,000.

And for you automotive history buffs, Rambler used the Rogue nameplate in mid-1966 on a "performance" edition of the American.

Ford Prices 2007 Shelby GT at $37K

DEARBORN, Mich. — The 2007 Ford Shelby GT, a production version of the popular Hertz rental-only Shelby GT-H model, will go on sale in January with a starting price of $36,970, including shipping.

2007 ford shelby gtThe first Ford Shelby GT will hit the auction block on January 20 at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale collector car event. Proceeds will benefit the Carroll Shelby Children's Foundation.

The newest member of the Shelby corral gets a 325-horsepower 4.6-liter V8 and will be slotted above the 300-hp Mustang GT. The Mustang GT is priced from around $26,000 while the Shelby GT500 starts at around $41,000.

Ford said the Shelby GT models will begin as stock Mustang GTs assembled in Flat Rock, Michigan. The cars are then shipped to the Shelby Automobiles facility in Las Vegas for modifications, including installation of the Ford Racing Handling Pack.

Donkervoort D8 GT - Hard Top Lotus Seven Replica with 1.8T Power

The maker of Lotus 7 inspired specialty cars with the heart of a modified Audi 1.8T plans on debuting its so-named D8 GT at the Geneva Auto Show this spring.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe

GOODWOOD, England — Rolls-Royce has revealed its new two-door Phantom Drophead Coupe in a series of official photographs ahead of its world premiere at the North American International Auto Show on January 7.

rolls royce Phantom Drophead Couperolls royce Phantom Drophead Coupe 2The upmarket convertible, previewed by the 100EX concept car in 2004, is the second new Rolls-Royce model to be introduced since the famed British carmaker was purchased by BMW in 1998. The coupe lines up alongside the larger four-door Phantom and will be assembled with it in limited numbers at Rolls-Royce's Goodwood production site in England.

In naming its latest model, Rolls-Royce decided against the oft-rumored Corniche name, preferring to give it the ultra-British "drophead coupe" designation for open-top models. Insiders say the Corniche moniker may now appear on a smaller Rolls-Royce model officially announced by Chairman Ian Robertson at the Paris Motor Show. That one is due out by the end of the decade as a competitor to the Bentley Continental Flying Spur and a heavily rumored entry-level Maybach.

The Drophead Coupe's exterior design draws heavily on that of the 100EX. Sleeker than previous Rolls-Royce models, it is far less formal than the Phantom, despite sharing certain cues. Among the more flamboyant elements brought over from the well-received concept car are its high-tech headlamps, raked grille, stainless steel hood and suicide doors.

The new car's vast fabric roof is claimed to be the largest ever applied to a production model. Engineered with the help of German specialist Edscha, it automatically retracts back into a dedicated well at the rear of the four-seat cabin. The trunk has a tailgate function designed to support the weight of two adults.

As with the Phantom sedan, the Drophead Coupe is based around an aluminum space frame. Rolls-Royce claims this decision let it develop the new car at a fraction of the cost of a conventional unit-body model. It has been heavily upgraded for use on the new convertible, with added strengthening to bolster overall stiffness despite the loss of the roof. Rolls-Royce goes so far as to describe it as the stiffest convertible on sale.

Powering the Drophead Coupe is the same 6.7-liter V12 engine used in the Phantom sedan. It produces 453 horsepower at 5,350 rpm and 531 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm. Drive is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. Despite tipping the scales at a portly 5,776 pounds, Rolls-Royce claims the new model goes from zero to 60 mph in a rapid 5.7 seconds. Top speed is limited to 149 mph.

At 220.8 inches in length, the new car is 9.8 inches shorter than the Phantom. A 130.6-inch wheelbase liberates enough space for four in a plush cabin with materials influenced by 1930s America's Cup J-class yachts, according to Rolls-Royce design boss Ian Cameron.

Magna and Avtovaz Ink Russian Cooperation Deal

TOLIATTI, Russia — Canadian corporation Magna International has signed a framework agreement for a cooperation deal with Russia's biggest auto producer, Avtovaz.
lada kalinaThe move was not unexpected. Since representatives of state-owned arms exporter Rosoboronexport were elected to the Avtovaz board of directors in late 2005, there has been much speculation about the future of Russia's biggest automobile producer.

A deal with Magna, one of the biggest parts suppliers in the world, should put the company on the path of reform. But there are still a lot of questions to be answered.

Avtovaz has a hopelessly outdated production facility in Toliatti, south of Moscow, capable of churning out close to a million complete cars and knockdown kits a year. However, production rose just 8 percent during the first 10 months of 2006 amid a market growth rate of around 20 percent.

Avtovaz's bestselling product, a midsize front-wheel-drive sedan, was designed in the early 1980s with assistance from Porsche engineering, while a rear-wheel-drive model is derived from a 1960s Fiat. In 2004 a new model, the Kalina was introduced, but it has been plagued with quality problems. Another new model, an upper midsize car that would compete against the likes of the Ford Mondeo and Opel Vectra, is expected by the first quarter of 2007.

The new deal with Magna should enable Avtovaz to open a new production facility with a capacity of 450,000 cars a year, where a brand-new model would be produced from 2009. It is rumored that this "platform C" model is the project 2116 that has been making the rounds of European engineering companies for years. However, the not-so-small question of who will secure the $1.7 billion required by this 50/50 joint venture still lingers.

1939 Auto Union Type D Expected to Fetch Highest Price Ever for Car in February '07 Auction

One of Two Original Auto Union Type D Silver Arrow Racecars Known to Exist.

That an original 1939 Auto Union Type D racecar will be auctioned is no small matter. These racecars, with engineering by Ferdinand Porsche, are some of the greatest racing cars in history, and also some of the rarest with only two original Type D racecars known to exist. For that reason, the auction house or record Christie’s suggests that this Auto Union will break the record for the most expensive automobile ever sold.

The ‘Silver Arrow’ era is arguably one of the greatest eras in racing history. With mobilization as a major goal for his country and successful race teams and race drivers a major source of national pride for the masses, Nazi leader Adolph Hitler funded the development of ground-breaking racecar design from Auto Union (the precursor to Audi AG as we know it today) and Mercedes-Benz.

auto union type D The Auto Unions in particular were revolutionary in design, masterminded by the great Ferdinand Porsche. Porsche was the first to place the engine amidships in a racecar, with the driver in the front for better balance. The cars also featured fully independent de Dion suspension. Earlier Type A, B and C Auto Unions featured a supercharged 16-cylinder engine that was later changed to a supercharged 12-cylinder for the 1938 race season to meet new international Grand Prix regulations that restricted the displacement of the engine to three liters. By this time, the Porsche had left the Auto Union project and adaptation of his basic design to meet the new regulations was supervised by Robert Eberan-Eberhorst. Drivers of the Type D models included Tazio Nuvolari, Hans Stuck, H.P. Muller, Georg Meier and Rudolf Hasse.

This particular Auto Union chassis, chassis #21 according to sources at Audi Tradition, is reported by Christie’s to have won the 1939 Grand Prix at the talented hand of “The Flying Mantuan”, the legendary Tazio Nuvolari. Audi Tradition also reports that this chassis won the 1939 Grand Prix of France in Reims by driver H.P. Muller.

auto union type D 2 Another interesting aspect of racing during that period is provided by Audi Tradition, and suggests why it is hard to pinpoint the exact history of a given silver arrow from the era. According to our source, both Auto Union and Mercedes-Benz employed the practice of the ‘Driver Car’ or ‘Winner Car’ whereby all of the components were pulled from the cars after a race and re-installed in the cars for the next race, and not uncommonly mixed from chassis to chassis.

Original Auto Union racecars are the rarest of breeds. While many of these cars were built and campaigned by Auto Union in the years prior to World War II, the legendary Auto Union silver arrows fell on a harder fate than their counterparts from Mercedes-Benz, Auto Union and its several facilities, including its Zwickau headquarters ended up behind the Iron Curtain when the geopolitical divider dropped.

It is said Auto Union staff did their best to hide the cars from the Russians, squirreling eighteen of these legendary machines away in a mineshaft, though the cars were eventually discovered by the Russians and shipped by train back to Russia to be examined for their technology. Only two Type D racecars are known to have survived, though a very small number of display cars that were never raced are also in the hands of a very select group of collectors.

auto union type D 3For many years, the components of this particular car and several others sat, largely dismantled, within the borders of the Soviet Union. It and what amassed to two or three others were located there in pieces, the bodies separated from the chassis and marked for the scrap heap when they was saved by the American Paul Karassik who found the stash in the mid 1980’s.

From Russia, the Auto Union chassis and parts were shipped west to England where the body of this Type D was recreated by Rod Jolley Coachbuilding and made to the exact dimensions of the original. Following this process, this ’39 Type D and a second ’38 Type D were rebuilt and fully restored by Crosthwaite and Gardiner, the same company who would later recreate in exact detail additional Auto Union silver arrow replicas for Audi AG and is reported to be currently creating an exact replica of the ’39 Type D for the Audi Tradition collection. In 1994, Dick Crosthwaite track tested this restored Auto Union for the first time following its reassembly at the fabled Nurburgring, from whence it was sold by Karassik to an English owner, all the time being meticulously maintained according to Christie’s.

auto union type D 5 The other Auto Union Type D with racing pedigree known to exist, saved by Karassik and rebuilt by Crosthwaite and Gardiner is a 1938 example owned by Audi AG, kept as part of the Audi Tradition collection and recently displayed at the Audi Forum New York City last October. The 1939 iteration set to be auctioned features an engine with dual superchargers good for 485 hp versus Audi’s ’38 Auto Union that features a single supercharger and 420 hp. Further differences between the ’38 and ’39 cars can also be spotted by the well-trained eye, including a different hunchback design at the rear, modified so that the car could accept the second supercharger underneath the aluminum bodywork.

The 1939 Auto Union Type D is slated to go under the auctioneer’s gavel on February 17, 2007 as a lot within the Christie’s International Motor Cars auction at Paris’ Retromobile 2007, one of Europe’s most prestigious vintage automobile exhibitions.

In late January of 2007, sources at Audi have shared that the 1939 Auto Union will be air-freighted to New York City where it will be displayed for one or two days at the Audi Forum New York City so that Americans interested in viewing the car before it goes on sale in February can take a closer look at the car on their own soil, then be able to bid via Christie’s New York offices on the day of the auction should they be interested in doing so.

auto union type D 4Christie’s expects this Type D will sell for upwards of $12 million. If so, that will break the previous record of roughly $11 million paid in 1987 for a 1931 Bugatti Type 41 Royale Sports Coupe.

Other significant vintage automobiles expected to be sold alongside the 1939 Auto Union Type D include a 1951 Talbot Lago T26GS "Barquette" driven single-handedly by Pierre Levegh in the 1952 24 Hours of Le Mans, a one-owner 1936 Mercedes-Ben 540K A, a 1927 Amilcar MCO with six speed records as claim to fame, the only remaining 1930 Derby K4 Low-Chassis Roadster and a nearly 100-piece pedal car collection.

Collector Alert: Rare Invicta Type S Going on Auction Block

MELBOURNE, Australia — Invicta was a short-lived British brand in the 1920s famed for created exciting two-seaters that competed with the powerful Bentleys.

invicta type SNow one of the few survivors is set to be sold off by an Australian auctions company. Australia is a gold mine for rare classic cars — the first surviving Alfa and several rare French 1930s coach-built cars currently reside in the land of kangaroos.

The late Robert Shannon, founder of his own auction company in Australia, bought this Invicta in 1988 and made it a flagship of his company. It was used extensively in local and international classic-car events. Following his death in 2000, his family retained the car but used it only rarely.

The Invicta Low Chassis Type S was introduced at the 1930 London Motor Show. Its sleek appearance was due to its underslung chassis, which means that the axles were running over the chassis, rather than the more frequently used solution in which the axles ran under the chassis. It was one of the first cars of its era to exceed 100 mph. Only 77 Type S models were made before the company folded in 1933. It is thought that only a handful remain, two of which are now in Australia.

Face Lift: Racedesign Helps Old Audi A6s Hide Their Age

ALLERSBERG, Germany — Audi's single-frame grille is the distinguishing hallmark of all recent designs from Ingolstadt — and now German tuner Racedesign Automotive is offering an update for older-model A6s.

Racedesign has a complete aero body kit for the B4-series Audi A6, beginning with the company's RDX single-frame grille and front spoiler. As an option, Racedesign also offers a genuine Audi grille with additional styling cues from the Volkswagen GTI.

A rear apron attachment bolts onto the original bumper. The front spoiler and rear apron are made from GRP and are approved for all A6 models made from 1997-2001.

Audi owners can further dress up their cars with Racedesign GT4 side sills, which fit A6s made from 1999-2004. A roof spoiler is available for the A6 Avant and a rear spoiler for the A6 sedan.

FAW-Volkswagen Launches New Models of Audi A6L

Three new models of year 2007 Audi A6L, including 3.2 FSI (front-wheel drive), 3.2 FSI quattro and 4.2 FSI quattro, were put into market in Sanya city, Hainan Island in China on Nov, 5. Powered by top-level FSI direct injection engines, brand new Audi A6Ls maintain superior performance both at dynamic and fuel economy.

audi a6lThe 3.2 FSI, which gains 188 kW (255 bhp) at 6,500 rpm and generates a constant torque of 330 Nm at 3,250 rpm. The V8 4.2 FSI engine, as the top quality and superior performance unit for home grown sedans, even gains 257kW (350 bhp) at 6,800 rpm and generates a constant torque of 440 Nm at 3,500 rpm. The two new engines will further strengthen Audi's top position of high dynamic and operation at China domestic market. The base price range of Audi A6L 3.2 FSI (front-wheel drive) will come from 573,900 to 647,200 Yuan (RMB). 3.2 FSI quattro and 4.2 FSI quattro will be sold 701,300 and 856,300 Yuan (RMB) respectively.

Mr. An Tiecheng, general manager of FAW-Volkswagen, introduced 2007 new models of Audi A6L to the attendees, "FAW Volkswagen has long experienced developments and tests for the components matching and Audi A6L road test so as to be sure of the high performance and quality of the three new models".

Werner Eichhorn, executive director of FAW-Volkswagen's Audi Sales Division, said "as a high end luxury auto brand in the world, Audi has established eleventh successive yearly top sales record so far. FAW-Volkswagen's Audi Sales Division has extended Audi's long-running global mission and sold 65,950 units at China domestic market from January to October, an increase of 60 percent compared with the same period of last year", Werner Eichhorn also added, "We are full of confidence facing the market challenge in the future and will be satisfy the increasingly diverse needs of customers in China."

With the launch of 2007 new models of Audi A6L, the full line of Audi products including A4, A6L, A8L and Q7 are all entered into China domestic market with yearly brand new models.

2007 Lincoln MKR Concept

The Lincoln MKR Concept is poised for a Detroit introduction -- and now, here's what you'll be looking at in January -- and seeing in a showroom sometime in 2008.

2007 Lincoln MKR Concept2007 Lincoln MKR Concept 2Though it's officially no more than a concept vehicle, the prototype is very likely to show up in production form before decade's end, albeit a bit less radical than the prototype. One of the more notable features of the show car is its all-glass roof with a Lincoln badge etched in. A more conventional roof, albeit with an oversized Panorama roof would be more likely in production.

The outline of the Lincoln badge can also be found designed into the distinctive brake and gas pedals.

What design chief Peter Horbury calls the "ultimate" Lincoln would go to rear-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, something that would make for a much more competitive entry. Under the hood of the show car is one of the most over-the-top engine layouts seen since the era of the muscle car. The prototype features a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6, the new Ford TwinForce, which makes 415 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The TwinForce, Ford promises, will deliver V-8 power with markedly better fuel economy.

Overall, the look displays Lincoln 's new design theme. It's notably more curvaceous than the slab-sided theme the brand was experimenting with in recent years, but it also harkens back to some distinctive Lincoln heritage cues, such as the double-wing grille and high beltline.

The MKR sits on a 112.9-inch wheelbase and, at least in show car trim, is shod in 21-inch wheels and tires, with well-displayed Brembo brakes.

Don't be surprised to see a production version of this sedan hit Lincoln showrooms for the 2009 model-year.

Holden Rodeo Gets New Turbodiesel in Australia

MELBOURNE, Australia — General Motors' Holden unit has introduced a new low-emissions turbodiesel engine as part of a major makeover of its 2007 Rodeo pickup, which goes on sale next month in Australia.

The new engine also meets strict new Euro 4 emission requirements.

Peak power of 161 horsepower is achieved at 3,600 rpm (up from 129 hp at 3,800 rpm) and peak torque of 246 pound-feet at 1,600 rpm (automatic) and 265 pound-feet at 1,800 rpm (manual), an increase of 29 and 49 lb-ft, respectively. The redone Rodeos with turbodiesel are equipped with new five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions.

There's also a gasoline-powered version of the Rodeo, powered by a 3.6-liter Alloytec V6, and a 2.4-liter four-cylinder model.

2007 Lexus GS450h Hybrid

You won’t want to buy this $60,000 luxury hybrid sport sedan for the fuel mileage, though it is marginally better than its conventional siblings. You might instead want to buy one for the performance since in this case the two power systems are faster than one - zero-to-sixty in 5.2 seconds . . . with a V6 . . . in a 4,100-pound car. Or you might want this GS450h for its luxury, technology or good looks.

When I evaluated the Ford Escape hybrid last year I ran some numbers to see what the pay-off period might be based on the extra cost of the dual power system compared to the savings in fuel. That one turned out to be about ten years. Not a bargain, I’m sure you’ll agree. This Lexus is a bit harder to assess since there are two other versions with which to compare. If we compare our test car to the V8 version there is only a few grand difference in price, the fuel savings is about 30% and performance is a tad better. The payoff period is between seven and eight years. If we compare it to the basic V6, a great-looking, beautiful car itself though a bit slower, the premium is nearly eleven grand, fuel savings is negligible and the pay-off period would be about 158 years. For some buyers the reason to purchase the hybrid may have more to do with making a statement on one’s environmental consciousness. For those folks I say ‘right on.’

On another front we can confidently say that the GS450h is one of the finest cars we’ve driven. The luxury quotient is the match of anything in its class and sportiness is admirable as well. With the amazing zero-to-sixty time referenced above seconds is close to class-leading. BMW M5 may be quicker and a smidge better in the twisties but the GS is not an all-out high-performance sedan either. It’s just a classy, comfortable, competent sport sedan loaded with technology.
Lexus’ tag line, “The Relentless Pursuit of Perfection,” is well stated. It’s really tough to find any fault with the GS. I thought I had identified a niggle when I looked and looked for the power mirror controller. I was just about to find fault when I took another look at the line of symbols below-left of the steering wheel. Right in the middle is a button with the word “Push” emblazoned in white. A gentle push opens the little panel with mirror controls, gas filler door release and a couple other functions. Slick. Now the only fault I’ve found so far is that the seat belt receptacle is rather deeply sunk in beside the seat making it difficult to engage.

Power and thrust are amazing. Full-throttle acceleration mashes us back into the firm leather seat with aplomb. Lexus says the 3.5-liter V6, 24-valve, quad-cam gasoline engine makes 292 horsepower but the electric motors enhance it to about 339 horsepower. Two electric motors take up about as much space behind the engine as a typical 6-speed transmission would. One motor is the starter and generator and the other is for auxiliary power and regeneration. Like all the gas-electric hybrids regenerative braking takes advantage of energy normally lost in deceleration and braking to recharge the batteries. Another advantage to the hybrid system is that this car is an Ultra-low Emissions Vehicle or ULEV, meaning the only thing cleaner is a full electric.

The sleek, low-slung new body design is distinctively different from the previous version. The roof line seems to extend from mid-hood nearly to rear bumper. Ingress and egress are a bit limited by the low-slung nature of the top. I have to duck more than I like to ease into the cabin. The rear door is even more limited. Only the largest of folks, though, will have a problem getting in or out. Once in those wonderful seats there is plenty of room. Because of that stub-tail shape the trunk is rather shallow and holds 7.5 cu-ft of cargo.

Once inside the feeling of luxury is pervasive. Three choices of wood and three of leather color allows for some personalization. You can have birds-eye maple in black or gold or your might prefer red walnut for trim. The materials, fit, finish and overall design, as we expected from Lexus, are impeccable. Everything we touch has a feel that confidently states ‘quality.’ My pretty blonde is a tough sell. She’s often unimpressed with even the best cars I bring home. But after driving the GS450h into the city she slid out of the driver’s seat with a big grin and announced, “I want one of these!” Too bad she can’t afford one.

Transmission is a CVT with 2-speed reduction, ‘snow mode,’ and a manual mode. I haven’t seen a CVT with manual mode before. A CVT (continuously variable transmission), of course, has no specific gears, so what’s up with a manual mode. We slip it into manual mode at speed and the shift indicator on the instrument panel shows a ‘5.’ We can bump it down and up triggering a slow shift-like feel, though it must be just selecting particular spots on the CVT continuum.
Suspension is independent double-wishbone with coil springs, gas-pressurized shocks and stabilizer bars front and rear – very sophisticated and on task. Push the GS as hard as you like through the cloverleaf on-ramp for a feeling of pure confidence and competence. The GS also has an admirable turning radius, much tighter than you’d expect from a car this size.
For the serious audiophiles among us Lexus has done a deal with the Mark Levinson folks to put ultra-premium sound systems in the GS and LS sedans; 7.1-channel architecture, 330 watts of power at 0.1%THD, driving 14 speakers. I hope that means something to some of you. It just means mighty good sound to me.

In terms of safety Lexus has left no stone unturned – and nearly no seating position without air bags - ten air bags to be precise. Additionally, the Vehicle Dynamic Integrated Management (VDIM) includes ABS with brake assist and electronic brake force distribution, traction control, automatic seat belt tensioners will make us feel safe as well. An available pre-collision warning system using front-mounted radar is paired with adaptive cruise control. ABS and traction control, of course, are standard. Brakes are vented discs, 13.1 inches in front and 12.2 inches in the rear.

Fuel mileage is supposed to be between 25 and 28-mpg. We’re getting a consistent 24.7 according to the on-board computer. I’ve never been entirely convinced of the accuracy of these on-board measurements but I’m assured by some engineers I know that they are very close. Perhaps we can shake this beauty loose from the press fleet for a long trip sometime to do a really good assessment of the mileage.

Our beautiful Smokey Granite test car starts out at $54,900 and with about 5-grand in options and $695 in destination fees we’re looking at a tad over $60,000. That Mark Levinson Audio system we spoke of earlier adds about $1,780, the 5th-generation navigation system with Bluetooth is $1,900. Run flat tires – five of them – run $480 extra.
Warranty is 48-month/50,000-miles plus 72-month/70,000-miles on the powertrain.
My pretty blonde and I loved the GS450h. For car buyers in that price range

Mazda's Christmas Carol Aims Small

HIROSHIMA, Japan — Mazda has announced it has face-lifted its Japan-market Carol micromini, and the new model will go on sale today.

mazda carolThe Carol, which Mazda describes as popular with female buyers "due to its charming design and practicality," gets a new front end with separated headlights, improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. Other notable changes include changed seats and door trim — with "tea colored" fabric.

The revised Carol has also qualified for Green Tax reductions because it is now certified as a SU-LEV vehicle under Japanese standards and gets 10-20-percent better fuel economy than the 2010 standard requires.

Mazda targets sales of 800 per month for the little Carol.

Detroit Preview: Volvo XC60 Concept Gets Ethanol Engine

GOTEBORG, Sweden — Volvo's XC60 concept, which will make its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, will be equipped with a 3.2-liter six-cylinder bioethanol engine and all-wheel drive.

volvo xc60 etanol engineThe bioethanol engine will make 265 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque. Carbon dioxide emissions will be down 80 percent compared with the same engine if it ran only on gasoline, Volvo says. Three current Volvo models, the C30, S40 and V50, are currently sold in several European countries with optional bioethanol FlexiFuel power plants, but all are four-cylinder engines.

The XC60 Concept's inline-6 is based on a gasoline engine, but "optimized" for E85, a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Using the E85 blend, Volvo says, fuel economy averages 19.2 mpg.

Volvo Cars' President and CEO, Fredrik Arp, has called the XC60 concept "the C30 owner's next car. Equally sporty and exciting, but far more capable."

The XC60 concept is scheduled for production with an on-sale date in early 2009. No word yet on whether the bioethanol engine will be part of the final production plan for the U.S. market.

Peugeot Design Contest Winner To Appear in Xbox Game

PARIS — French automaker Peugeot is asking the public to vote online for their favorite from 30 entrants in the 2007 Peugeot Design Contest.

Thirty design studies, chosen from 4,000 entries that came in from 113 countries, can be viewed on Peugeot's special contest contest Web site.

But hurry! The deadline for voting is January 27. The winner will be announced at the Geneva Motor Show in March by Frédéric Saint-Geours, CEO of Peugeot, and the design will be built for a debut at the Frankfurt show in September — not to mention a debut as part of a future Xbox 360 auto-racing game.

Toyota conceives a 21st-century Supra

About a year ago, Toyota asked its designers and engineers a simple question: “What would be a suitable and appropriate Toyota sports car for the 21st century?” The result is the car you see on these pages, the FT-HS concept.

FT-HS is a hybrid sports car designed at Toyota’s Calty design center in Newport Beach. The idea was to find out if it is feasible to combine ecology and emotion in a sports car; to make an eco-friendly car that is fun to drive. Why bother? Because Toyota thinks drivers of the future will be eco-conscious but won’t want to give up performance cars.

Details are sketchy, but FT-HS is a front-engine, rear-drive four-seater with a target of about 400 hp from a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine and next-generation hybrid technology. Toyota officials figure the car should be able to hit 60 mph in the 4.0-second range.
The car’s looks are bound to provoke some debate (they already have around our office), and indeed Toyota refers to it as “perfect imbalance.”

Calty director Kevin Hunter says the FT-HS expresses the “values of a design strategy that combines two key elements: J-Factor and vibrant clarity. J-Factor is the conceptual umbrella. It refers to the local and global acceptance of Japanese-inspired design and cultural sensibilities.
“Vibrant clarity, on the other hand, is the design language used to express the J-Factor, much in the same way that L-Finesse is the language of the Lexus division.”

Hunter says the car’s hard-edge corners will smooth airflow and reduce turbulence. The hood’s scalloped channel exposes the hybrid engine. The roof has a scooped-out section designed to reduce aerodynamic drag and provide more headroom. The front end’s lower intake provides additional cooling and airflow management. The underbody is fully covered to improve aerodynamic efficiency.

The interior is designed with a carbon fiber beam down the middle, separating the driver and passenger cockpits. All important functions are directly in front of the driver. The hubless steering wheel incorporates the semi-automatic transmission’s paddle shifters. The beam also provides chassis stiffness.

All that remains to be seen is whether Toyota will bring this vision of a future Supra to production reality, maybe around 2009 or 2010. And much of that likely will depend on how those water-cooler debates go.

V6 Saga: From Rover to Roewe, With Help From Ricardo

SHANGHAI, China — When Shanghai Auto bought a package of intellectual property from Britain's defunct MG Rover group, it also acquired the rights to the automaker's aging KV6 engine.

roewe 750But the V6 that sits under the hood of SAIC's recently introduced Roewe 750 sedan, while sharing the basic architecture of the old KV6, is a much more modern power plant, thanks to engineering assistance from Ricardo.

The British engineering firm has worked with a number of Chinese manufacturers, including Chery and Lifan, as well as SAIC. Ricardo was commissioned specifically by SAIC to re-engineer the KV6 and assist in setting up the new Baoshan engine manufacturing plant near Shanghai.

As modified by Ricardo for the Roewe 750 sedan, the updated 2.5-liter KV6 is fitted with a Siemens engine management system and meets Euro IV emissions standards. The engine makes 188 horsepower and is mated to an Aisin five-speed automatic transmission. The near-luxury sedan is capable of 0-60 acceleration in 10.2 seconds.

Ricardo continues to work with the Chinese auto giant on the development of SAIC's in-house automotive R&D capability for future products.

Mash-up: Chinese/Italian Crossovers for Europe

MOLISANO, Italy — The DR group, which imports Chinese vehicles from Gonow, has launched its own crossover models, the DR3 and the DR5.

The DR models will be powered by Fiat 1.9-liter Multijet diesel four-cylinder engines. The company said it plans to begin production in mid-2007, and expects to build and sell up to 12,000 vehicles a year in Europe. Prices will start at around $21,000 and will range up to $37,000.

DR also is importing the Gonow Troy pickup and the Victory utility vehicle for sale in Italy under its Katay brand.

Feast-and-Famine: Nissan has many new models now, but keeping momentum could be tough

nissanAfter taking over Nissan Motor Corp. in 1999, CEO Carlos Ghosn pushed designers and product planners to quickly bring out new and redesigned Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. They did, and the new products helped revive the company. But to sustain that momentum, Nissan wants to spread out future changes to its lineup. The automaker's redesigned products currently are arriving in clusters, leaving dealers waiting for up to a year at a time for the next group of fresh vehicles.

Smoothing it out could take 10 years, executives say - a long transition for an industry that lives and dies on fresh products.

Fixing the problem will mean speeding up the schedule for some models while shortening the cycle for others, says Dominique Thormann, senior vice president for administration and finance at Nissan North America Inc.

"Teams are working on a 'levelization,' " Thormann says. "When the Renault-Nissan global alliance started, the pipeline was empty. We created new products - but they all aged at the same time."

Tom Lane, Nissan's Japan-based corporate vice president for global product planning, says the automaker wants to end up with a steady flow of three new or redesigned Nissan products a year, along with one or two new or redesigned Infiniti products every year.

Nissan dealers are now enjoying a feast of new products. The company is ramping up both a new-generation Sentra and Altima, models that account for three-fourths of the brand's annual car sales. Also arriving in the coming weeks is Nissan's first hybrid vehicle, a version of the Altima, followed by the company's first Altima coupe next spring. A freshened Titan full-sized pickup is due at the same time.

The vehicles all follow the summer release of the all-new Versa sedan and coupe.

But before this wave, the last new Nissan model introduction was the redesigned Xterra SUV, in the fall of 2005. For the first 11 months of this year, Nissan Division car sales declined 4.5 percent vs. the year-ago period, while truck sales fell 5.4 percent.

The Titan looks particularly vulnerable for Nissan, underscoring the need to keep products fresh. The Titan is not scheduled for a full redesign until 2010. But in the coming months, Nissan dealers will face strong competition from a redesigned Toyota Tundra. GM's redesigned pickups are also reaching the market.

The ensuing crossfire could hit the Titan, which will sell fewer than 75,000 units this year.

Sources on the project say the Titan in the spring will get a new front end and side flares to alter its styling. The pickup also will get a longer-wheelbase, extended-cab version.

GMC expands line-up with first crossover: Acadia On Sale

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Next year will be the breakout year for GMC, General Motors executives predict.

This month, the brand's first crossover, the Acadia, joins two redesigned high-volume, high-profit vehicles - the Yukon full-sized SUV and the Sierra pickup - in a refreshed, expanded GMC lineup.

The standard Acadia went on sale this month and starts at $29,990, including shipping. It's one of the first vehicles on GM's new Lambda platform and is meant to drive like a car but provide the utility of an SUV.

Bob Lutz, GM's vice chairman of global product development, says, "GMC doesn't do cars; it does trucks only." The Acadia expands GMC's range, says Lutz.

"This is GMC's first crossover vehicle," he says. "It's their first truck-type vehicle that's on a unitized architecture."

The basics: The Acadia is manufactured in the Lansing Delta plant near Lansing, Mich. The 3.6-liter V-6 engine comes standard on the 2007 Acadia. It is rated at 275 hp and 251 pounds-feet of torque. The Acadia can tow as much as 4,500 pounds.

The Acadia's engine is backed by GM's new Hydra-Matic 6T75 six-speed automatic transmission, which will help it compete on fuel economy.

The front-wheel-drive model gets 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The all-wheel-drive model gets 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.

The Acadia has a 118.9-inch wheelbase and 67.28-inch-wide front and rear tracks. That combination lowers the center of gravity and enables a smooth, stable ride.

"Our goal was to balance size, capability and design," said Anna Kretz, GM's vehicle line executive who worked on the Acadia.

The design: The Acadia has sleek lines and a low stance. Because of this, the vehicle did not need running boards, Kretz said.

The design is "traditional GMC," Lutz says. It's "muscular, stable and athletic with beautiful lines."

The Acadia seats seven or eight people with three rows. The rear suspension uses an isolated mounting system to reduce noise and vibration. GM says this enables the sharp handling that comes with an independent suspension, but with minimal floorpan intrusion. That helps the Acadia offer more passenger and cargo space.

The market: GM sees the Acadia competing against the Honda Pilot and Acura MDX crossovers and the Dodge Durango SUV, Lutz says. Larson said it is the first GMC vehicle likely to attract a 50-50 mix of male and female buyers.

Lutz declined to make sales projections. "With the Acadia, we expect a core brand for GMC," he said. "So in rough numbers, 70 to 75 percent of our volume at GMC will come from all-new products."

Compromises and shortcomings: GM chose to sacrifice some performance for space and utility, Kretz said when reporters noted that the MDX has a noticeably firmer suspension that prevents the body from leaning during a fast curve.

The skinny: Lutz says the Acadia is "as good as we know how to do right now. This is as good as it gets." But competitors such as the MDX and Pilot won't be dislodged easily.

Chery Faces First Major Recall in China

BEIJING — Chery Automobile Co., which continues to nurture high hopes of entering the U.S. market in 2008, said it will recall nearly 2,000 Tiggo crossover vehicles, including a small number that were exported to overseas markets.

Chery said about 1,875 vehicles built earlier this year may have a defective fan controller that could cause engine overheating. All the vehicles involved in the recall are equipped with automatic transmissions.

The automaker has exported more than 25,000 vehicles this year, to such countries as Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Russia and Iran. Last month, it officially parted ways with Malcolm Bricklin's Visionary Vehicles, which had planned to begin selling Chery products in the U.S. in 2008. The automaker is still looking for a U.S. distributor.

Tech Watch: Audi Lights Up R8's Engine Compartment

INGOLSTADT, Germany — Audi this week showed off its new R8 with LED illumination of the engine compartment.

audi r8audi r8 2The R8 is equipped with a 4.2-liter V8 that churns out 420 horses and 317 pound-feet of torque. The Audi R8 goes from zero to 60 in 4.5 seconds and has a top speed of 187 mph.

The new optional light package bathes the engine compartment in LED light, which draws attention to the eight-cylinder unit through the clear glass "bonnet." The car also has 210 exterior LED lights. The German automaker did not announce pricing on the package yet, but said the four-wheel-drive R8 will start in Europe at around $150,000.

Audi said it started taking deposits for the R8 after its world debut in Paris in late September and said, "These have already accounted for all right-hand-drive production slots allocated

Alfa To Race 8C Competizione in '08

MILAN, Italy — Alfa Romeo executive Antonio Baravalle confirmed that the company, a subsidiary of the Fiat group, will prepare its new 8C Competizione for endurance racing at Le Mans, Daytona and the Nürburgring in 2008.

Alfa 8C CompetizioneAccording to European press reports, the car will compete against Ferrari and Porsche in GT2 after being homologated by Italian chassis constructor Dallara and the Maserati Corse racing team, with assistance from Pirelli.

The racing version of the 8C reportedly will be developed in 2007 at the Maserati facility in Modena, where MC12 development is also based. According to Italiaspeed.com, "The existing Maserati Corse team will turn its attention to the 8C Competizione once the ongoing MC12 activities are wrapped up at the end of next year."

The original Alfa 8C swept Le Mans four consecutive years, from 1931-1934.

KTM X-Bow – 2.0T-Powered Lightweight Sportscar

With this press release, motorcycle manufacturer KTM has revealed details of its plans for a lightweight car. Audi boss Dr. Martin Winterkorn has made mention of this project before, powered by Audi's 2.0T engine. Whether or not Audi will create their own version remains to be seen, though the general consensus among industry insiders is that Ingolstadt will do so.

KTM – Europe’s second biggest motorcycle manufacturer – will introduce the first ever car in the company’s 50-year history: the X-Bow. The background for this step can be found in the dynamic development of the company. An annual growth rate of 21 percent in sales and 25 percent in turnover has been achieved since the new start-up of the motorcycle production in the year 1992. The company’s output in 1992 was 6000 motorcycles with 160 employees while in the last financial year production was 84,421 motorcycles with 1697 employees.

Since the beginning of the new century, KTM, as the world market leader in the offroad segment has successively expanded its range of business activities into the street segment. The first step into the automotive sector is therefore a logical extension of this strategy. With the X-Bow, KTM can offer all those who do not have a motorcycle license a driving experience that is typical for the brand.

The Philosophy: Ready to Race

As different as cars and motorcycles may be, KTM has managed to transfer its development principles from two wheels to a sports car in every way. In this way the unique driving experience and the spectacular merits of the drive are not just dependent on the performance of the engine. Just as they have managed to do with motorcycles, the KTM developers have kept the weight of the vehicle extremely light by using the latest materials, an intelligent construction and a purist styling. The car will weigh only about 700 kg.

The interaction between the sophisticated aerodynamic concept and a motor sports-oriented chassis makes the X-Bow clearly superior to a far higher performance sports car. Thanks to its open form of construction, the just 70mm high windshield and the free standing wheels after the style of a Formula racing car, it is not only the appearance, but also the driving experience that is immediately evident as entirely unique.

Aggressive, edgy, dynamic, a personality from every angle: the design of the KTM X-Bow originates unmistakably from the house of Kiska. Austria’s biggest design studio has had close links to KTM for almost 15 years and is not only responsible for the design of the motorcycles, but also for the corporate image of the company. The design of a lightweight sports car is where passion and challenge meet, resulting in a product that fits seamlessly into the KTM brand family.

The stylish hallmark of the X-Bow is its light-footed, optical presence evoked by the apparent floating panels of the bodywork, the rangy wheels and the transparent area that allows a perspective of the vehicle technology, which for example makes parts of the suspension and damping visible. The technical elegance of the carbon chassis has been used as a design element for the graphic concept. The two outer mirrors which are fixed to double guided stays are symbolic of the lightweight construction.

The purist attitude of the X-Bow also finds its expression in the striking headlights and rear lights. The rear is dominated by a central silencer and a powerful diffuser which is an indication of the level of painstaking work on the aerodynamics of the vehicle.

And as the first ever KTM sports car, the X-Bow naturally comes in the Mattighofen fashion colours: black and orange.

Cooperation with Dallara: The carbon fibre monocoque

The core of the KTM X-Bow is the sophisticated carbon fibre monocoque. This high-tech solution was until now reserved for use in top class motor sport and for elite street sports cars. Through a new construction- and production process developed together with the Italian development partner, the tradition-rich racing car specialist Dallara, this technology can now be offered in a significantly cheaper version. The KTM X-Bow therefore takes on the role of a forerunner that can use new insights and production processes to its benefit.

These advantages are impressive everywhere: With an extremely light weight of around 70 kg, the chassis of the X-Bow offers a maximum amount of rigidity and safety. A crash box in the front nose of the monocoque absorbs collision energy, while the roll bars are integrated into the structure.

An options kit is available on request which increases the recognized safety levels to that of the motor sports authorities FIA: this includes having additional struts mounted at already designated points.

Intelligent Turbo Power

KTM was able to secure Audi AG as a partner for the engine, which when delivered from the company in Ingolstadt Germany, is a congenial extension for the slim concepts of the KTM X-Bow. The four cylinder engine completely made of aluminium is light, compact and includes the most modern engine technology: four valve technology, FSI direct fuel injection, high pressure injection valves, turbo charge, a smooth, adjustable intake camshaft and two balancer shafts.

With this engine, the basic version of the KTM X-Bow will achieve 220 hp. An additional version will have a performance in the area of 300 hp at its disposal. First simulations for the KTM X-Bow in any case demonstrate its superior characteristics; the acceleration to 100kph should be comfortably under four seconds.

The transmission versions also come from Audi AG. A manual six-gear transmission comes with the series production, while an optional DSG-transmission will also be offered.

Motor sports for the highway

Apart from the optimal distribution of weight with the engine mounted between the axles, a guarantee of high speeds in the corners comes from the chassis’ high quality suspension and damping elements. In this area KTM can call upon competence in its own company: the KTM Netherlands subsidiary White Power has at its disposal chassis experts for both on road vehicles and motor sports.

The brakes also come from the best possible source: KTM has had a long-term and fruitful partnership with the Italian specialists Brembo.

And for further improvements in the traction, KTM will offer a limited slip differential for the rear axle. This component part is particularly targeted at drivers who want to engage in certain activities on racing circuits.

Purism without compromise

The lightweight concept also demands some limitations. This is why the X-Bow deliberately does away with many comfort features which, because with their weight and the space need for construction have a negative effect on the performance of the vehicle. These include such features as a sound system and an air conditioner.

On the other hand, because of the X-Bow’s concept, it is not dependent on many weighty elements. Its lightweight makes power steering redundant; the narrow windscreen requires neither windscreen washers nor blowers; the sloping lines of the side of the vehicle and the seat height make it possible to get into the car without having a door; and lastly the carbon chassis together with the four-point safety belt create a safety package that makes airbags unnecessary.

It was also a conscious decision to reject any electronic driving aids. The KTM X-Bow is designed as a piece of high-tech sports equipment for experienced customers who prefer a filter less driving pleasure.

Innovative accessories

By doing away with the roof, both the driver and passenger of the KTM X-Bow are exposed to the elements in a similar way to that of a motorcycle. For this reason a decision was taken concerning an accessories program that has parallels with the world of motorcycles.

Special overalls for use with the KTM X-Bow have been developed together with the northern Italian clothing experts Dainese. These garments will take over some of the comfort functions that are usually available with a vehicle with a roof – for example entertainment and communication systems. These functions are directly integrated into the clothing, which will also naturally serve as protection against cold and windy weather.

An important part of the custom-made driver equipment will be a helmet specially designed for this project. Wearing of the helmet is not required by law but is recommended by KTM. In this way the X-Bow also represents a bridge to a motorcycle. Special storage space is also provided for these two helmets.

A light, easy to install tarpaulin to cover the interior of the car will also be available.

Premiere in Geneva

This lightweight sports car with innovative technology will make its first public appearance at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2007. In the same year, 100 units of the comprehensive pre-series will be manufactured in-house by Italian racing car specialists
Dallara and sold by KTM. The price for the basic version will be around EURO 40,000.

Dependent on the reaction to the presentation of the car and the success of the preseries, KTM plans further small series productions of this car. This production will take place in Austria and begin in the year 2008. KTM is working on the basis of a projected 500 units per year for this small series production.

The decision concerning this small series production will be taken at the end of April 2007.

If it is positive, KTM will establish a small but efficient sales structure up to the time of the commencement of production at the end of 2008. It is planned to have a dealer network of up to two qualified sales establishments per country. Where these will be located depends, not the least on the planned European-wide conformity for the norms of small series homologation. According to the present situation, sales offices for the X-Bow could be considered for the following countries: Germany, Finland, Greece, Britain, Netherlands, Austria, Portugal and Switzerland.

3D Marketing: Ford Readies Fleet of Foam Edges

DETROIT — Ford is rolling out traffic-stopping billboards nationwide that feature life-size versions of the 2007 Ford Edge.

2007 ford edge2007 ford edge 2The vehicle appears to be teetering precariously on the edge of the billboards. They are going up in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco.

The realistic-looking 3D Edge models are hand-carved from Styrofoam and painted factory-issue "Blazing Copper." The vehicles have chrome three-bar grilles and chrome 18-inch wheels, along with a real windshield and back window wipers.

Ford said each 3D Edge takes about three weeks to make and weighs about 1,200 pounds fully built. They are created by MMT, designers of artwork for billboards. MMT built the oversized image of a baseball crashing into Detroit's Renaissance Center during the World Series last fall.

Aston Martin Goes Artsy in Motown

DETROIT — Drawing on a dramatic "fire and ice" theme, Aston Martin will turn its stand at the upcoming North American International Auto Show into an art gallery with images of two Vantage roadsters.

"We wanted to give visitors to the NAIAS an uninhibited vision of the stand and the opportunity to see the car for what it is — a beautiful piece of art," said Dr. Ulrich Bez, Aston Martin chairman and CEO.

Staud also created an Aston Martin calendar with images from the "Fire and Ice" shoot. It is on sale for $90 at Renestaud.com.

LED Daytime Running Light for the Audi R8

The Advanced Power TopLED from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has graduated to the new sports car with the four rings, the Audi R8.
The headlights now feature LEDs and look absolutely stunning, with the tiny light sources emphasizing the sleek curves. The LEDs provide high-visibility daytime running light without placing an appreciable load on fuel consumption.

With their impressive performance – 18 lumen at an operating current of 140 mA – the Advanced Power TopLEDs rank between Power TopLEDs and Golden Dragons in terms of their brightness. They achieve this through a combination of ThinGaN technology and chip-level conversion to produce white light. The yellow converter is located directly on the blue chip – which is not the case with the frequently used volume encapsulation method. The result is higher luminance and better optical efficiency.

The introduction of mandatory daytime running light in numerous countries throughout Europe is giving vehicle manufacturers a further opportunity to differentiate their products from those of competitors with unique headlight designs. The Advanced Power TopLED provides concentrated light from very small dimensions and has an edge length of only 500 µm. This gives stylists enormous freedom to create imaginative designs. What’s more, their high-temperature behavior meets the stringent requirements of the automobile industry for this application.

In the Audi R8 the daytime running light is provided by twelve tiny LED spotlights per headlight. The Advanced Power TopLED will be available on the market with these specifications from mid 2007.

Toyota Blade Aimed at Japanese Baby Boomers

TOKYO — Toyota has unveiled an upmarket hatchback, the Blade, aimed at Japanese Baby Boomers and priced from under $20,000.

Toyota BladeAt the car's introduction here, President Katsuaki Watanabe declined to say whether the Blade will also be marketed in the U.S., but suggested it may be reserved exclusively for the home market.

The sporty compact features a sloping nose and trapezoidal headlamps, with massive air intakes on either side of the grille. The face is more distinctive than the ones on such Toyota family cars as the Camry, and has some cues reminiscent of recent Volkswagen designs.

The Blade is powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. Well-equipped versions will sell in Japan for around $24,000.

Nissan Versa Sedan Priced at $13,165

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Nissan said the latest variant in the 2007 Versa lineup — a sedan — will range from $13,165, including a $615 destination charge for its base 1.8 S model to $16,165 for the top-of-the-line Versa 1.8 SL.

The Versa 1.8 SL adds a continuously variable transmission, 15-inch aluminum alloy wheels, in-dash six-disc CD changer, remote keyless entry, cruise control and 60/40-split-folding rear seat. Pricing for the base model is identical to pricing for the Versa hatchback, the company noted.

Options for the Versa sedan include a $600 sunroof, $250 antilock brakes and $300 for XM Satellite or Sirius Satellite radio.

Nissan said dealer inventory for the Versa is running at around a 15-day supply or less. It said it will add additional Versa production at its Cuernavaca, Mexico plant in January to catch up with demand for the small car. The Versa, one of the newest, fuel-efficient small cars on the market returns 30 mpg in city driving and 36 mpg on the highway.

Daihatsu Materia: A Scion xB Look-Alike for Europe

BOLOGNA, Italy — Japanese automaker Daihatsu, an affiliate of the Toyota group, has announced a European version of its home-market Coo, a boxy compact based on the Toyota bB.Daihatsu MateriaIn Europe, the car will be rebadged as the Daihatsu Materia and will go on sale in mid-2007.

The Materia will share a 103-horsepower 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine from the Daihatsu Terios crossover. Prices are expected to start at just over $21,000.

Toyota meanwhile is planning to replace its Scion xB next spring in the U.S., but has said the next-generation model won't be a clone of the Japanese-market bB.

Seidl Goes Mainstream With Audi A3 Tune

SIMBACH/LANDAN, Germany — Seidl Tuning normally tweaks high-performance products from BMW, Mercedes and Porsche. But its latest effort focuses on the more prosaic Audi A3 compact.

Seidl Audi A3 TuneSeidl focuses primarily on aero body add-ons, starting with new front and rear bumpers. The front bumper has massive air-intake cutouts flanking a new matte-black grille insert. The rear bumper incorporates a skirt and a diffuser for the dual exhaust.

Side skirts are a bit more subtle. But the custom alloy wheels are distinctive, and are shod with ultra-low-profile performance rubber.

Seidl has left the A3 cabin virtually intact, but the tuner has a full catalog of accessories to dress up the five-door hatchback and its performance-oriented sibling, the S3.

Detroit Preview: GM's Global Concepts To Debut in Motown

DETROIT — General Motors has announced that four of its global concept cars will make their North American debuts during the upcoming Detroit auto show.

The automaker will also host a celebrity-studded event starring such personalities as Carmen Electra and Mario Lopez at a new venue called GM Style.

The concepts include the Holden EFIJY, a pillarless custom coupe with a V8, which was unveiled at the 2006 Australian International Motor Show. GM says the car is a reinterpretation of the 1953 FJ Holden.

Not just a pure design exercise, they are also a way of stimulating a closer dialogue with customers and of trying out new ideas on the general public. This helps the designers get a feel for future styling trends and to develop and implement new design idioms.

The unique luxury convertible design study from Stuttgart turns a "dream car" vision into reality. Styling conveys effortless superiority and elegance

Apart from the four doors, the outward distinguishing marks of the concept car include a very large and upright radiator grille, LED headlamps and taillights, two-tone paintwork and a striking interplay between taut lines and large, restful surfaces. This lends the one-off special an air of effortless superiority, power, elegance and forward-flowing energy.

The long side-window opening which, typically of a convertible, is not interrupted by a B-pillar or window frames, ensures seamless continuity between the exterior and the interior, even when the top is up. Extensive use of high-value materials such as finest-quality leather, 3D-effect materials and large bird's eye maple trim panels (in the interior and even on the soft-top compartment cover) and many other thoughtfully designed interior details, highlight the luxurious, unique character of this design study.

Top-level engineering

BMW To Unveil 3 Series Cabrio

DETROIT — BMW began circulating photos of its redesigned 3 Series convertible in October

BMW 3 Series CabrioBut the driving public won't get its first in-person glimpse of the new retractable-hardtop car until early January, when the car makes its world debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

BMW's NAIAS display also will include the redesigned X5 utility vehicle and the Hydrogen 7, which the company describes as the world's first hydrogen-powered luxury sedan. The car's 6.0-liter V12, modified to run on either gasoline or hydrogen, delivers 260 horsepower.

The 3 Series convertible, which goes on sale in the spring, tops out with the 335i, powered by a twin-turbocharged inline-6 that delivers 306 hp.

Spy Pics: 2008 Ford Five Hundred Seen Ahead of Detroit Debut

DEARBORN, Mich. — The 2008 Ford Five Hundred was nabbed without its customary heavy front and rear camouflage ahead of its North American International Auto Show debut.

The refreshed version of the Five Hundred is expected to get Ford's new 3.5-liter V6 as well. Recently certified to generate 265 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque, it would give the Five Hundred the horsepower it needs to compete and go a long way toward erasing the "gutless" image of the current model.

Subaru Promises New Diesel as Boxer Engine Turns 40

TOKYO — As part of the Subaru Boxer's 40th birthday party, parent Fuji Heavy Industries confirmed on Tuesday that the company is "in the final stages of developing a diesel boxer for launch within the next three years."

2007 subaru engineThe Japanese company reaffirmed its philosophy on boxer engines, saying they are "an integral part of Subaru's future plans."

Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subarus, introduced the boxer in 1966 in the Subaru 1000, a sedan with a one-liter, four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive. The company said, "Initially the flat-4 engine was considered quirky, but it paved the way for the symmetrical all-wheel-drive system."

The horizontally opposed engines are called "boxer" because the cylinders are positioned sideways, with pumping action that resembles the punching motions of a boxer.

The engine powers the current Impreza WRX, Forester XT and Legacy GT.

Mitsubishi Outlander joins the party

The last Mitsubishi Outlander was plain outdone by its rivals, but now we have an all-new model that goes on sale in the UK on March 1.

Underneath, the new Outlander is the first car to use Mitsubishi's first-ever global platform, which is a fancy way of saying they'll be using the oily bits in plenty of other models to keep costs down.

The four-wheel-drive system is a development of the Evo IX's and offers three options, covering front-drive, automatic four-wheel drive and 4WD Lock for sticky situations.

Power comes from either a 2.0-litre 138bhp turbodiesel or a 154bhp 2.2 turbodiesel, and there's a new 2.4-litre petrol engine with 168bhp.

There are two trim levels on offer: Equippe and Warrior. Prices start at £19,449 and rise to £24,749.

Acura To Debut "Advanced Sports Car Concept"

TORRANCE, Calif. — Acura has released a teaser sketch of its Advanced Sports Car Concept, which will make its debut on January 7 at the North American International Auto Show.

The sketch shows off what the automaker describes as its "next-generation Acura exotic sports car," with a V-shaped rear end, bulging rear fenders and a minimal greenhouse.

Acura did not reveal vehicle specifications, but the buzz is that the Advanced Sports Car Concept may be a candidate for a V8 engine.

Saab Ponies Up a Free 9-5 Aero for Owner of Million-Mile Car

MILWAUKEE — A Wisconsin man who drove a Saab for a million miles, then donated the car to a museum, is being given a free brand-new 9-5 Aero by the automaker.

saabPeter Gilbert's high-mileage 900SPG is going to be displayed on the Saab stand at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month.

Saab has extended the same new-car gift offer to all other comers who can prove they have driven a Saab a million miles from new. That offer expires at the end of 2007, however. Saab Automobile USA says it is "convinced of the jetlike performance and endurance of its products," but a spokesman told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper that so far Saab doesn't know of anyone else who might be close to taking the company up on its offer.

The 1989 900SPG, which had its mileage verified by Saab last summer, was Gilbert's work vehicle; he's a traveling insurance salesman. He drove the million miles with the car's original engine and turbocharger, Saab said. His new 9-5 Aero will be handed over at Saab's Aero Academy at the Road Atlanta racetrack in Georgia early in 2007. Gilbert described himself as "obviously thrilled" and threatened that he "might take a run at another million miles in [his] new 9-5!"

It seems Ford has suffered the ubiquitous last-minute dilemma of what to get its Fiesta

ford fusionfor Christmas. Instead of opting for the ever-reliable gift voucher, it's given the wee superminis the tried-and-tested makeover 'n' accessory collection.

Out early in the new year, the special edition Fiesta Silver gets body coloured trim, a leather steering wheel and a set of 15-inch alloys.

The Fiesta Zetec Climate has had a similar range of bolt-ons, and it now also comes with option of a Sport Pack - a rather grandiose name for a set of alloys and dark glass.

Ford's Fusion doesn't miss out on the festive accessorising either, because the Pursuit gets a moulded body kit, silver-finished interior and, yes, a set of alloys. It'll still look about as rough 'n' tumble as a trouser press, though.

Ford says that these special editions will save you a few hundred pounds over specifying the options individually, but there's no mention on whether you can trade them in for Ottaker's vouchers.

Cadillac Teases '08 CTS Sedan, Possible '09 Coupe

DETROIT — The redesigned Cadillac CTS sedan that will be formally unveiled in January and begins arriving at dealers in late summer will be joined in mid-2009 by a sister model — an all-new compact sport coupe that may be called Cadillac CTC, sources say.

2008 cadillac cts sedanCadillac on Tuesday sent news media a teaser shot of the front end of the '08 CTS, with global design boss Ed Welburn and product development czar Bob Lutz posing on either side of the signature egg-crate grille.

The official premiere takes place in early January during media preview days at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The '08 CTS goes into production in July at GM's Lansing plant and will likely be assembled at other locations, including Russia and China.

Cadillac so far has declined to release details on the next CTS or even to confirm the existence of the CTC coupe that's slated to begin production in late spring 2009, other than to say the new CTS interior will be much higher quality.

Supplier sources say a beefed-up 3.6-liter or 3.9-liter V6, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, will likely be the base powertrain combination, with either a 6.0-liter LS7 V8 or a supercharged 4.4-liter Northstar V8 powering the next-generation CTS-V that arrives in model-year 2009 and the proposed V-Series CTC that could begin production in 2010.

Both the 2008 CTS sedan and the 2009 CTC coupe will ride on an updated version of GM's rear-wheel-drive Sigma platform. There is a provision for all-wheel drive, but there is no word so far on plans to add an AWD variant.

Cadillac also is said to be considering a convertible variant of the CTC, possibly with a retractable hardtop.

Aston Martin: Eighth for V8

Aston Martin's engineers are grinning like city fat cats with a juicy Christmas bonus after their N24 V8 Vantage finished eighth overall in the inaugural 24-hour race of Bahrain.

aston martinEighth may not sound great, but the production standard N24 V8 was competing against a field of motorsport homologated cars.

Starting from 14th on the grid, the N24 ran flawlessly through the night to complete over 2,600km, needing only fuel and tyres. None of which was a surprise to Top Gear magazine's Associate Editor Bill Thomas.

The first journalist to get a drive in the N24 back in November, Bill described the N24 as a "great GT racing car - enormously capable and road legal".

The only mark in Aston's copy book was the absence of chief executive Dr Ulrich Bez. After pranging the N24 in testing, the good Doctor was unable to race because of other commitments, but we reckon he'll be back in the driving seat of the N24 very soon.

Toyota Auris: Prost in the frost

Alain Prost has kept his lead in the Trophée Andros ice-racing series with a pair of strong results in the second round of the championship in Andorra.

Sports car ace and former Ligier F1 racer Franck Lagorce in a Fiat Stilo is turning out to be Prost's main rival for the ice-racing crown.

Monaco GP winner Olivier Panis is also showing some pace in the other mid-engined V6 Toyota Auris.

Small Cars Fall Short in Crash Test Study

ARLINGTON, Va. — Consumers rushing to buy small cars like the Chevrolet Aveo, Hyundai Accent and Scion xB because of their fuel-efficiency may want to check the latest ratings.

2007 nissan versa.In its first crash tests of subcompacts, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that most small cars do not measure up when it comes to protecting occupants, and it urged consumers to stick with bigger, heavier vehicles. The Chevrolet Aveo, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio and Scion xB were among the poorest performers in the new round of tests. Among the cars tested, the Nissan Versa rated the highest in all three crash test categories: front, side and rear.

"The Hyundai Accent, the Scion xB and the Toyota Yaris without its optional side airbags earn poor ratings in the side test," the institute said in a statement. "The Chevrolet Aveo is marginal. The Accent and Aveo don't perform well even though they have standard side airbags. The Accent's structural performance in the side test also was marginal."

"People traveling in small, light cars are at a disadvantage, especially when they collide with bigger, heavier vehicles," said IIHS president Adrian Lund.

Driver deaths in subcompacts are higher than in any other vehicle category, he said. The institute evaluated cars weighing 2,500 pounds or less.

The award was officially presented to Lamborghini President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann, at a glittering Top Gear ceremony in London.

A Gallardo Spyder graces the covers of the latest edition of Top Gear magazine alongside other category winners, after the 195 mph super car joined the winners’ line-up on a photo shoot in Mumbai. The magazine includes a review of the Spyder by Emma Parker-Bowles and Bollywood film star Akshay Kumar, with Jeremy Clarkson commenting, “… we telly boys think the best, most fun car to emerge all year was Lambo’s new soft-top.”

Top Gear magazine is now distributed in multi-language versions in 30 countries, including India, with Top Gear’s television programme broadcast in numerous markets world-wide.

The £131,000 Gallardo Spyder was officially launched at Frankfurt Motor Show in autumn 2005. Customer deliveries commenced in the UK this year, from the four official dealerships in Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham and London.

Rinspeed To Unveil See-Through eXasis Concept

ZUMIKON, Switzerland — It's no accident that the photos of Rinspeed's transparent eXasis concept look as if they were taken on the surface of the moon.

The latest Rinspeed concept will make its debut on March 8 at the Geneva Motor Show.

The eXasis has a transparent floor pan, a cigar-shaped body with fore and aft tandem seating and a supercharged two-cylinder 750cc engine that seems more appropriate for a motorcycle. The eXasis runs on bioethanol to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions. Rinspeed said the vehicle has a projected weight of only 1,650 pounds due to its lightweight plastic construction.

Rinspeed said the eXasis celebrates the company's 30th anniversary. Inspiration for the concept came from "elements of the legendary Auto Union racing cars from the first half of the last century, combined with a modern Baja 1000 off-road vehicle," Rinspeed said.

Rinspeed partnered with 18 other companies on the eXasis concept, including Recaro, Sharp Electronics, Swissauto and Weber Automotive.

The company warns that the eXasis may be "just a clever 3-D projection" or "maybe a mirage of a four-wheel art object."

2008 Cadillac CTS To Make Motown Debut

DETROIT — Cadillac says it will release its first "official" photo of the 2008 CTS on December 19, and the formal unveiling of the new model is tentatively scheduled for January 8 at the North American International Auto Show.

"If you saw the car's surprise appearance on CBS-TV's 60 Minutes earlier this year, than (sic) you'll have an idea of what this photo may look like," the automaker said in a statement.

The redesigned CTS is expected to have a more powerful version of the current 3.6-liter V6, kicking horsepower up to the 300 range. The car is expected to get GM's new six-speed automatic transmission as well. The 2008 CTS will hit showrooms in the fall.

At the same time, Cadillac said its Escalade is "faring very nicely." Through November, Cadillac has sold more than 54,000 Escalades, surpassing all of 2005. The best-selling version of the SUV, the standard-wheelbase Escalade, is up 25.5 percent. Cadillac reports that Escalade "now earns more than 40 percent of the large-luxury-SUV category in the U.S."

Hamann Tweaks BMW 3 Series Coupe

LAUPHEIM, Germany — The BMW 3 Series coupe E92 by Hamann features an aerodynamics kit, power boosts, new wheel rims and a sportier interior.

If that isn't enough, the German tuner says it also is preparing a power boost to 380 horsepower for the BMW 335i.

Hamann said it boosts the power in the BMW coupe by recalibrating the standard ECU. The six-cylinder gas engines in the 325i and the 330i get a boost of 13 hp and 17 hp, respectively, and about 18 pound-feet of torque. The top speed goes up to 155 and 165 mph, respectively. The standard top speed in the 325i is 152 mph, while the standard top speed in the 330i is 155 mph.

The tuner is offering four 18-20-inch wheel designs for the 3 Series, as well as a lowered suspension. Interior upgrades include sport gearshift knobs in aluminum or leather/aluminum, and aluminum pedals, handbrake lever and footrest.
Multimedia upgrades include a DVD player, TV reception and a Sony PlayStation game console.

Chevy Lifts Sheets on 2008 Malibu

DETROIT — 'Tis the season for sneak peeks.
Chevrolet on Monday took some of the wraps off its 2008 Malibu, preceding its formal unveiling at the upcoming North American International Auto Show, with an on-sale date slated for summer 2007.

The car has a 6-inch-longer wheelbase than the current model, with a more upscale look. The car will be offered in four-cylinder or six-cylinder variants and come in front-wheel-drive configuration only.

GM said it will invest $208 million in its Fairfax, Kansas, plant to prepare for Malibu production.

Countdown to Mitsubishi Evo X

Start the clocks a-counting now because we have just over a year to wait for the new Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

This prototype joins the rest of the Lancer range, which is launched at Detroit.

Tuner Special: Abt Audi AS7-R

KEMPTEN, Germany — Abt Sportsline, the Volkswagen tuning specialist, has a hot new edition of the Audi Q7, dubbed AS7-R. That's R as in racing.

The AS7-R boasts a supercharged 4.2-liter V8 that delivers 500 horsepower. The 0-60-mph run takes less than 5.9 seconds, and top speed clocks in at 162 mph.

The slightly more sedate AS7 features a 3.0-liter TDI engine, with output hiked to 272 hp and torque bumped to 406 pound-feet.

The AS7-R aero body kit includes a front lip spoiler and fender extensions, painted in matte chrome. Other body parts are done in matte black. Abt 22-inch wheels add just the right stance.

Inside, the vehicle has leather upholstery, plus a multimedia system developed with Alpine. The rear-seat entertainment system includes a DVD changer, an Apple iPod and a Sony Playstation 2.

Irvine, CA (December 14, 2006) – Volvo Car Corporation today released the first official images of the XC60 Concept that will be unveiled at the upcoming North American International Auto Show. Scheduled to be shown to the world January 7, 2007, the XC60 Concept looks towards Volvo's future on two significant fronts: it offers the world a sneak preview of the next XC model to come from Volvo Cars and it reveals several design elements that will be part of future Volvos.

Now we’re elevating our design DNA to an entirely new level by literally pumping up our cars’ visual volume,” says Mattin. “With more expressive, emotive shapes, it will be a magnet for the viewer’s eyes. If a Volvo is recognizable from 100 feet away today, I want to get to the point where you will instantly spot it from twice that distance in the future.”

From the design viewpoint, the XC60 Concept is a daring, emotionally charged creation. The concept car, resplendent in a dashing Tin Bronze livery, combines two distinct vehicle designs. “Down below, the unmistakable and capable XC muscles pump up the vehicle, giving it a purposeful stance with high ground clearance on large wheels. Above the waistline, the dashing lines trace the profile and sporty charisma of an elegant, sexy coupe,” noted Mattin.

Enlarged iron mark in the grille

The classic Volvo iron mark was reintroduced on Volvo’s cars almost two years ago and makes its boldest design statement yet on the XC60 Concept. Embedded in the trapezoidal grille, the large iron mark provides a distinctive signal that the future has arrived. The new angled positioning lights on both sides of the grille are also part of the DNA of Volvo’s next-generation design language. Along with the headlamps and the sweeping front fenders, they radiate an aggressive stance that also emphasizes the hood's classical V-shape.

The skid-plates front and rear are integrated to give an elegant yet distinct signal that this is primarily a crossover with pronounced on-road properties. The sculpted, emotive shapes that are such an important part of Steve Mattin’s design direction in the future become particularly pronounced when the XC60 Concept is viewed from the side. With imposing 20-inch wheels, accentuated wheel housings and aluminum scuff-plates, the muscular XC feel is emphasized in the lower half of the car, while the windows’ sleek profile and the dramatic roofline give the upper portion of the vehicle a sporty coupe-like appearance.

New tailgate design

“At the rear, the expressive, sculptured shapes provide additional hints of the direction our design DNA is set to take. The contours of the tall tail lamps highlight the muscular shoulders and the tailgate’s trapezoidal shape is a further development of the glass tailgate in the Volvo C30,” explains Mattin. The tailgate design features another ingenious innovation: the lower portion moves out and up over the upper section. This creates a sufficient opening for small items without requiring the entire tailgate to be opened. Of course, the tailgate can also be fully opened. The third alternative is to only open the upper section.

Another exciting solution is the dark panel in the lower part of the tailgate. Viewed from inside, it becomes transparent to improve the driver’s ability to see the area behind the car. The roof is also transparent, with dark-tinted glass attached on top of a Y-shaped bearing structure. At the rear, the Volvo name on the tailgate features more pronounced lettering with wider spacing than before. This too is a new feature that will be echoed throughout the model range to boost the brand’s image.

Elegant, high-tech interior

The XC60 Concept has an interior design that is as daring as the exterior. This applies particularly to the instrument panel and floating center stack and the slim, visually floating front and rear seats. The interior is dominated by the elegant combination of saddle leather and aluminum. The upper section of the passenger compartment is typically Scandinavian light, while the lower portion has a contrasting dark, espresso brown shade. Mattin’s team also paid a lot of attention to the XC60 Concept's interior lighting appointments, creating a passenger compartment that seamlessly incorporates functional areas of light and a pleasant ambience – mood lighting that emphasizes the modern atmosphere inside the XC60 Concept.

Instrument pod with wings

The main instrument pod resembles a bumble-bee with a round analogue speedometer as the “body” in the middle flanked by two digital “wings” featuring display screens for other information. The instrument panel and the new steering wheel harmonize with the iconic floating center stack, which is angled towards the driver. It is even slimmer than what is found in today’s production models, freeing up additional storage space behind the console.

“The white iPod-inspired surface is almost like a smooth wall of snow, surrounded by a metal frame that emphasizes the asymmetrical shape. Buttons and controls are entirely integrated into the surface and the “invisible” screen for information and navigation appears only when it is switched on, starting up with a spectacular pulsating sequence. The screen image is back projected, which makes the center stack one of the innovative highlights of the interior,” said Mattin. The four rotary controls also come to life through the start-up sequence. All other buttons are touch sensitive.

The unique gear selector takes the form of a slide control, similar to the controls found on the mixer-table of light and sound technicians. The doors’ control panels are also identical to the center stack.

Slim seats

Volvo Cars is world-renowned for its extremely comfortable and ergonomically designed seats. In the XC60 Concept, they are refined even further with slim, asymmetrical lines that provide added comfort, particularly when climbing in and out of the vehicle. The light-colored seats appear to float above the dark floor. All the seats have fully integrated seat belts. The head restraints and backrests, in both the front and rear seats, feature a pony-tail slot. This feature was introduced a couple of years ago in the Volvo YCC (Your Concept Car), and in the XC60 Concept it has been extended all the way down the back to provide enhanced ventilation and improved rearward vision. The slots also feature integrated ambient lighting.

“By turning his head, the driver can see all the way through his or her own seat, through the rear seat’s backrest and through the transparent panel at the lower corner of the tailgate. This promotes added safety in a car type whose height may otherwise limit rearward vision,” explained Mattin. The pony tail slots in the rear backrests feature the same type of attachment points as in the luggage compartment floor. This permits a whole variety of possibilities for using accessories or securing different types of loads. In addition, there is storage space for a specially designed XC60 Concept luggage set under the rear seats, conveniently accessible via the rear doors

A glimpse into Volvo's future

“The XC60 features a number of innovations that indicate how our cars will look in a few years time. The idea of a Volvo being boxy is behind us. Instead, we will make our Scandinavian design heritage more emotional and radiant by adding sculptured, exciting shapes and new, innovative features,” noted Mattin.

Riding Mitsubishi Shogun

If it's not one four-wheel-drive machine, it's another with Mitsubishi.

If the styling looks a lot like the old one's, that's because Mitsubishi says it has taken a line of 'progressive evolution' with the new car.

Another thing that has stayed the same is the pricing, with the entry-level Shogun Equippe three-door costing £22,949.

A top-of-the-range five-door Diamond model will set you back £34,999.

Four-wheel drive with various options remains a constant, but the 3.2-litre turbodiesel engine has been heavily revised. This four-cylinder unit now has 168bhp and 275lb ft of torque.

These power figures are for Shoguns fitted with the automatic gearbox. Choose the five-speed manual and you're limited to 158bhp but get 281lb ft.

The interior is all-new too, and Mitsubishi says quality has taken a big step up. The swoopy centre console looks a lot better than its predecessor's, although it doesn't mount a style challenge to the Land Rover Discovery.

The new Shogun goes on sale on March 1, 2007.

More power for no increase in cost sounds like a good proposition to us and that's just what Skoda has done with its Superb.

With a small increase in torque and performance, the new Superb 1.9 TDI PD 115 models are also fractionally quicker and more frugal.

Fiat and Tata Partner in India

MUMBAI, India — Italian auto giant Fiat will team with India's Tata Motors in an $874 million joint venture to build compact vehicles for Indian consumers and for export markets.

fiat lineatata indicaThe venture will use Fiat's assembly facility in Ranjangaon, with assembly of newly designed Fiat and Tata vehicles to begin in early 2008. The plant will have the capacity to build 100,000 vehicles and 200,000 engines a year. The engines will include a small diesel for the Indian market.

The Fiat models for India will include the company's popular Grande Punto hatchback and the Linea sedan. The Fiat Palio already is being assembled at the plant.

Tata is developing several new models, including a low-priced compact intended to sell in India for around $4,000. It did not specify which models will be produced at the plant with Fiat.

Arden has dedicated itself for over 30 years to the tuning of British cars and is one of the leading addresses for customers looking to emphasise the typical features and customise their Jaguars and Range Rovers. Arden has already devised an extensive range of modifications for the latest XK model from Jaguar. Jaguar fits the XK as standard with a powerful 4.2 l V8 with 298 bhp / 219 kW and 411 Nm. Arden rebuilds this eight-cylinder engine from scratch and sharpens the claws of this big cat by increasing its displacement. The displacement increase to 4.5 l is achieved by fitting a crankshaft specially produced for Arden, along with new con rods and pistons. Arden optimises the lubrication and the cooling and, in doing so, guarantees a long service life of the components, as it also does through its more than 20 years of experience in the field of Jaguar engine tuning. In conjunction with the modified intake and exhaust systems and sports catalytic converters, the fully recalibrated EMS produces an emphatic but harmonious power boost, whilst retaining the original exhaust gas classification. For drivers, these modifications primarily translate as a vast increase in driving pleasure. The now 4.5 l displacement generates almost 100 extra brake horse power, with the total of 392 bhp (288 kW) and a torque of 475 Nm at 3,800 rpm bringing a smile of satisfaction to the driver’s face. Sprinting in just 5.3 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h means that it is just under a second faster than the production version. And the top speed of 285 km/h is pretty impressive, too.

Drivers’ eyes light up even brighter when they see the Arden’s compressor version, which puts the Krefeld tuning specialist one step ahead of the British manufacturer, since Jaguar doesn’t currently offer a supercharged engine. Arden elicits an impressive 480 bhp / 353 kW and an awesome torque of 640 Nm at 3,850 rpm from its supercharged 4.5 l V8 engine. The supercharged XK accelerates 0.5 seconds faster to 100 km/h than its Arden naturally aspirated counterpart, and as much as a clear 1.4 seconds faster than the production version. A top speed of 295 km/h makes the XK AJ 20 Coupe the fastest Jaguar currently on the road.

In neutral, the Jaguar XK purrs as softly as a kitten. But watch out when it stretches out its claws! The Arden XK AJ 20 Coupe expresses its additional power in the form of a deep growl, produced by a sports silencer system with the option of either two or four chrome-plated tailpipes. Upon request, the system can be extended at any time up to a performance-enhancing complete system that includes catalytic converters.

With the XK AJ 20 Coupe, Arden contrasts the more delicate appearance of the production version with a muscular look. At the front, the coupe is given an impressive “face” by fitting the Arden front spoiler featuring large air inlets. New side sills, also incorporating air inlets, continue the front design and make the car look lower to the road. Arden swaps the side vents in favour of its own, colour-contrasting versions. Cooling openings in the right and left-hand side of the bonnet (also colour-contrasting like the side vents) create a more sporty appearance. The rear end constitutes the logical conclusion defined by the front design. Like the front section, the rear apron also features cooling openings. To effectively reduce the lift and to make the XK more sure-footed, Arden equips its XK AJ 20 Coupe with a rear spoiler, which blends perfectly into the basic design. A must for every Jaguar enthusiast is the patented Arden bonnet ornament, whose base has been specially angled for the new XK. It is characterised by its attention for detail and both its visual and technically perfect craftsmanship. Its anti-theft system prevents it from being stolen and it is TЬV approved. Consequently, in the event of a collision, it gives way and, in the case of a more severe impact, it even comes away completely, thus minimising the risk of injury.

When out hunting, big cats should always maintain good contact with the ground. For this reason, Arden modifies the suspension. By way of example, the Jaguar specialist provides the XK with a set of Arden sports springs featuring a progressive suspension rate. These springs lower the car’s centre of gravity by approx. 30 mm, which ensures smoother handling particularly in the mid speed range and also lends added visual impact to the dynamic appeal of the vehicle. For drivers of a more sporty inclination, a complete sports suspension with specially produced shock absorbers is currently undergoing testing. To this end, Arden is conducting extensive test drives on public roads and sealed-off race circuits.

The big cat creeps up on its prey on new 21" wheels (FA: 9 x 21" with 255/35R21", RA: 10 x 21" with 295/30 R 21") produced using state-of-the-art machines in the exclusive and further advanced Arden “Sportline” design. In conjunction with the Arden set of suspension springs or a sports suspension, they constantly optimise the road contact and successfully round off the appearance of the Arden XK AJ 20 Coupe.

Arden has also proven to be an expert when it comes to the interior. For instance, the in-house upholsterer and Arden designer joiner’s workshop are responsible for numerous styling components. MIni: Sidewalk surfing

Mini has announced a top-of-the-range addition to its convertible line-up, due to be presented for the first time at the Detroit motor show.

The Sidewalk also boasts the option of a CVT transmission, while the Cooper version can be fitted with a six-speed auto' gearbox.

Sidewalk models weigh in about six grand more than their base model equivalent, which Mini says in a saving of some £2,000 over specifying the options independently.

The only question is whether it'll be called the Mini Pavement when it gets to the UK.

Rolls-Royce High rolling

Imagine the delight of the salesman who took this order: 'Fourteen Rolls-Royce Phantoms. Oh, and you want the Extended Wheelbase model? OK, just sign here please.'

Rolls-Royce The best bit is the salesman would only have to fill out one form and photocopy it for the other 13 cars, because all 14 have been ordered in identical specification for the Peninsula Hong Kong hotel.

The Peninsula is famous for its fleet of green Rolls-Royces, and the Phantoms are the latest in a long line of Rollers run by the hotel since it first ordered seven Silver Shadows in 1970.

But not content with ordering standard cars, the Peninsula's have a few special additions and alterations, which required 25 Rolls-Royce engineers and designers to work on the cars.

First up is a cool box to stow chilled hand towels, while an enlarged luggage compartment helps with those bulky suitcases on the way to the airport. Even the screws used in the boot have been changed to special counter-sunk ones, to eliminate any risk of expensive luggage being scratched.

The rear air conditioning controls have also been moved for the Peninsula's car's, shifting to the rear arm rests for easier access.

It's not just the cars that have come in for special attention. The Peninsula's team of chauffeurs have been flown to the UK for special training at Rolls-Royce's own chauffeur school, and all of the Phantom's operating manuals have been translated into Cantonese for the drivers.

No one's saying just how much it has cost to supply the 14 Phantoms, or if the Peninsula got a discount for bulk ordering, but reckon on a bill for around £5 million if you want to kit out your B&B with a similar fleet.

Renault Megane's grand gesture

Renault has plundered its options list to come up with a revised version of the Megane Coupe-Cabriolet.

There's the usual range of engines and trims, with prices starting at £17,810. The special edition Megane Coupe-Cabriolet goes on sale on January 5.

Last car leaves Ryton

The last car to be built at Peugeot's Ryton factory near Coventry has rolled off the production line.

peugeot 206The 206 hatchback brought to a close a bitter chapter in British car manufacturing, as the French firm shifts 206 production to Slovakia in an effort to lower costs.

More than 2,300 workers have been made redundant from the Ryton plant, which will shut up shop completely in January.

The closure of the Ryton plant brings an end to 67 years of car production at the site.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Taking a page from its 2005 and 2006 playbook, Chrysler is again offering Limited Edition Signature Series models of the 2007 Chrysler 300, Pacifica, PT Cruiser and Town & Country.

It is equipped with dry-sump lubrication with a separate oil tank to ensure a reliable oil supply for the engine even at high cornering speeds. The 3.8 litre engine has a high compression ratio of 12.0 : 1. The output of 445 hp (327 kW) is reached at 7,600 rpm.

Zero to 62 mph (100 kph) takes just a scant 4.2 seconds, zero to 125 mph (200 kph) just 13.5 seconds. The top speed is 197 mph (315 kph).

The RGT engine captivates by its spontaneous response behaviour and its distinct revving ability. The RGT will be delivered in rear-wheel-drive and 6 speed transmission with limited slip differential and short shift kit serially.

The sport suspension is adjusted for road traffic as well as for track use by the help of especially adjusted Bilstein gas shock absorbers and chassis springs.

The standard RGT Coupe is equipped with an integrated roll cage which is covered almost entirely by the Alcantara of the A, B and C pillar. The crossbar can be demounted.

Mazda Ryuga To Spread Wings in Motown

TOKYO — Mazda issued a teaser sketch of its latest concept car, the gull-winged Ryuga, and said the car will get a formal unveiling on January 8 at the Detroit auto show.

It is a more sophisticated extension of the Nagare, which made its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show and introduced what Mazda says is the "company's new design future." Ryuga is Japanese for "gracious flow."

Mazda said the Ryuga "will reflect a higher level of sophistication achieved through the use of rich fabrics, engineered fits and hidden details."

"Ryuga is Zoom-Zoom defined," said Laurens van den Acker, Mazda's global design director. "It combines vibrance, confidence, fun and youth all in one ingenious package."

Mazda will also roll out the 2008 Tribute HEV, which goes on sale later in 2007. The company says the SUV has a combined output of 155 horsepower between its gas engine and electric motor. Powertrain specifications will be released at the Detroit show.

SIEGEN, Germany — B&B Automobiltechnik has unveiled a new pocket rocket: its take on the Audi S3.

In maximum tune, the engine makes 362 horsepower and 302 pound-feet of torque. The 0-60-mph acceleration time is trimmed to less than 4.9 seconds, and top speed climbs to 171 mph.

B&B adds an adjustable coil-over suspension kit that lowers ride height by 1 inch. There's also a high-performance brake system. Tires and wheels in 19- and 20-inch sizes are available.

Saab gets the birthday blues

No bus passes for Saab as it reaches its 60th birthday. Instead, it's birch-slapping away the wrinkly blues with special Anniversary Editions of the 9-3 and 9-5.

2007 Hyundai Tiburon Starts at $17K

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. — Hyundai has announced that its base 2007 Tiburon GS coupe has a starting price of $17,195, including a $600 shipping charge.

Meanwhile, the third model in the Tiburon lineup, the midrange GT model with the 2.7-liter V6 and a five-speed manual transmission, starts at $19,895.

For 2007, Tiburon gets redesigned front and rear fascias, standard MP3 capability and a track-tuned suspension on the SE model.

The 2006 Tiburon GS started at $16,695, including a $600 destination charge.

Even more important for everyday driving is the increase in peak torque from 310 Nm to 360 Nm between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. Thus equipped sprint time from 0 - 100 km/h is shortened from 9.3 to 8.6 seconds. Top speed of the tuned Caliber diesel model increases to 201 km/h.

After parking the Aston Martin N24 V8 Vantage racer in the barriers at the Nürburgring, Aston boss Dr Ulrich Bez will be hoping for a less ignominious return to racing when the N24 lines up in Bahrain on December 15-16.

The N24 is based on a standard V8 Vantage and the only modifications are for safety and ease of servicing in a pit lane. That means a full race safety cage, special fuel tank, fire extinguisher system, racing seat, and built-in air jacks to hoist the car off the road swiftly for wheel changes.

Otherwise, the engine and transmission are absolutely stock, and the N24 can be made road legal to let owners drive to and from whichever race they are competing in. This is exactly what the Aston team did when they raced at the Nürburgring, although driving to Bahrain may be a little too far.

Audi Confirms A5 Debut, Major Model Expansion by 2015

INGOLSTADT, Germany — Audi AG confirmed that it will launch a new A5 coupe in 2007, one of several new-model introductions next year, including the TT roadster and the R8 supercar.

audi a5According to sources in Europe, Audi will launch the new A5 coupe next spring. It should reach U.S. showrooms later in the year as a 2008 model.

The two-door A5 will share its basic underpinnings with the next-generation A4 sedan. Design cues appear to be lifted from such Audi show cars as the Nuvolari.

The A5 will be aimed primarily at BMW's 3 Series coupe. An A5 convertible, due in 2009, will replace the current A4 cabrio. High-performance R5 and RS5 variants of both coupe and convertible are said to be in the pipeline.

Around 8.4 billion euros ($11 billion U.S.) of the total investment volume will be invested in new Audi vehicles alone. The Audi brand intends to extend its range of vehicle models from the existing 22 to a total of 40 by the year 2015.

"Investments in new models, in product innovations and core competencies are the lifeblood of any company," said Rupert Stadler, board member for finance and future chairman of the board of management. "We can only ensure our corporate success by offering a range of attractive products. This is therefore also an investment in the future of the company and is decisive in safeguarding our jobs."

Audi will be launching several new models or variants on the market next year. The Audi A5 Coupe, Audi TT Roadster and Audi R8 midengine sports car will be among the models to expand the range from 2007 onwards.

BEIJING — Chang'an Auto, the Chongqing-based make partnered with Ford and Suzuki, surprised the Beijing Auto Show with its new Tianyu SX4.

Chang'an said it began taking orders on December 4, with prices starting at around $13,400. The Tianyu is being assembled by the Chang'an-Suzuki joint venture.

The American version will closely resemble the Chinese model. The two are expected to share most underbody components, including chassis and powertrain.

Audi TT whispers

Audi is going to extremes with its TT range in the coming years.

audi tt rsWe can fully expect a TT RS in the next 18 months, punching out around 320bhp from a tuned version of the existing V6 engine.

The TT RS will use the dual-shift gearbox (DSG) and have four-wheel drive as standard. Audi engineers won't say much more on the topic, but they have given the nod that the RS will crack 0-62mph in under five seconds.

The RS will use the same bodyshell as the new TT, but with further lightening of materials to reduce weight and improve performance.

At the other end of the scale, the same Audi engineers say a diesel-powered TT is more than likely in the next two years.

The engine will be from the new Bluetec range jointly developed with Mercedes and is set to have 'at least 170bhp, if not more'. It's also likely to come with a DSG gearbox to make the most of mid-range torque that should be in the region of 280lb ft.

Closer to the here and now, we can look forward to Audi taking the wraps off the A5 coupe at the Geneva motor show in March.

HB Special Coming to Amsterdam Show

OEGSTGEEST, Netherlands — Tino and Paul Huet, founders of the Netherlands-based Classic Drivers Club, have built their own dream classic.

hb car greenhb car green 2It will premiere next month as the Huet Brothers Special at the Amsterdam auto show. From there it will make a worldwide launch in March at the Geneva Motor Show.

It is evident from the first sketches that the Huet brothers looked at 1950s Mille Miglia racing cars such as the Aston Martin DBR1 and the Ferrari 412S for inspiration. In typical specialty-car fashion, the mechanical package has been kept fairly simple: The whole car is based on the Triumph GT6, already a classic in its own right. Produced between 1966 and 1973, it is one of the lesser-known but still capable British sports cars.

The 2.5-liter six-cylinder gas engine has also been lifted from the GT6, but it has been tuned to unleash 180 horsepower. Although the exterior looks classy, it is made of up-to-date carbon fiber. That's the reason it weighs only 1,650 pounds

We've been perched at the edges of our beds for some time now every night before bed, saying a few humble words with our palms pressed together.

Now, our prayers have been answered and Chrysler has announced the 300C SRT-8 Estate is coming to Blighty in right-hand drive.

We like that Chrysler talks in 0-60mph terms rather than the new fangled 0-62mph, and we're also rather partial to the SRT-8's 168mph top speed.

Icing the 300C cake for us is the £40,990 price tag, which means you can go embarrassing BMW M5s with a spare 20 grand in your back pocket.

Chrysler has upped the braking and suspension abilities for the SRT-8 and it now sits 13mm lower than the standard car for a meaner look. There's also a subtly handsome bodykit, which is something we never thought we'd say about an American performance car.

February next year is the time to watch out for the 300C SRT-8 Estate to touch down in the UK and we just pray we can get our hands on one as soon as possible.

2007 BMW Z4 M Coupe Is Playboy's Car of the Year

The 2007 BMW Z4 M Coupe, with a 330-horsepower inline-6 and a six-speed, is Playboy magazine's 2007 Hottest Car of the Year.

The lineup of top automotive picks by the magazine will be featured in the January issue. Other winners include the Volkswagen Eos, which earned honors as the "best two-way player" for its folding metal top that opens and closes at the touch of a button.

The Porsche 911 Turbo, with a 0-60-mph time of 3.7 seconds, was named "best sports coupe," and the redesigned Cadillac Escalade, with a 403-hp 6.2-liter V8, scored as "best SUV."

The $1.3 Million Maserati MC12 Versione Corse

BOLOGNA, Italy — Maserati has unveiled a more powerful special edition of its MC12 GT1 racing car here at the Bologna Motor Show.

The price: a cool 1 million euros, or $1,333,000 at current exchange rates. Plus taxes, of course. The car goes on sale this month, with the production run limited to a mere 12 units.

The car, which Maserati observes is not street legal, was designed "to give an exclusive number of Maserati clients the possibility to test their driving capability in the most exclusive gentleman drivers' environment."

The official exterior color is "Blue Victory," but Maserati says it will customize the car, inside and out, to the customer's personal specifications.

Coupe gets a clean-up

We've seen some horrors from Hyundai when it has restyled cars, and none more so than the last generation of the Coupe.

Sadly, the engine line-up has not come in for any attention, so the 1.6- and 2.0-litre engines remain, as does the 2.7 V6.

However, the interior has been tweaked with a new centre console and iPod-able stereo.

Sales start on New Year's Day and prices range from £15,745 to £18,995.

The car is based on a new global platform that also forms the foundation of the new Mitsubishi Outlander SUV.

The new Lancer will also be the first Mitsubishi in North America to offer an optional continuously variable transmission. Mitsubishi says the Lancer will be available in three levels of trim and driving dynamics: DE, ES and the sport-tuned GTS.

Smart Roadster Morphs Into New AC

LONDON — Project Kimber, the British-based consortium that plans to revive the discontinued Smart Roadster under the AC name, has released the first image of its new car that goes into production next year.

The consortium plans to produce the new two-seater in the U.K. The production location is expected to be in Wales, with up to 8,000 cars produced in the first year. It is rumored there is a prospective second production site, in Erfurt, Germany, being considered. Project Kimber confirms it is in the final stage of assembling a $130 million investment package aimed at securing the car's future.

The group is working toward a goal of getting the car sold in North America. It has also bought tooling equipment from Smart parent company DaimlerChrysler that, it says, will allow it to easily and cost-effectively place the two-seater into series production.

Project Kimber secured the rights to the Smart Roadster and its Roadster Coupe sibling last February following the failure of a more ambitious bid to purchase bankrupt MG Rover from its administrators. Instead, MG Rover eventually fell into the hands of Chinese carmakers Nanjing Automobile and SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation).

The early sketch shows that the AC will not be an exact copy of the low-slung Smart, although there will be clear similarities within the doors, which are often one of the most expensive exterior panels to engineer.

The styling, penned by Keith Helfet whose list of credits include the Jaguar XJ220, is flagrantly retro but also includes some modern touches, such as vertically opening scissor action doors and an air duct ahead of the rear wheel arches to feed the midmounted engine.

Others involved in the project include Gordon Murray, the brains behind the seminal McLaren F1; and John Piper, who was instrumental in the JCB Dieselmax, which sped to a land speed record for diesel-powered cars at Bonneville in August with a run of 328.767 mph.

Crime limo-scene

Hen nights are an axis for evil. We've suspected this for a long time but now police chiefs have confirmed it.
Turns out that those chavalier stretch limousines are a front for drug dealing, money laundering and car ringing.


limousineThe operation carried out by more than 20 police forces across the UK also discovered that many of these stretch limos are unsafe to drive or be in.

Chief Supt Geraint Anwe, Chairman of the National Roads Policing Intelligence Forum, said: "Our concerns are that with every passing day the possibility of these vehicles falling apart increases significantly."

In response, the National Limousine Association says it wants the industry regulated and is aware criminals have infiltrated the limo business.

The product lineup includes oval-shaped dual tailpipes for the production exhaust system, a throttle-controlled sport exhaust system and a complete high-performance exhaust system with high-performance manifolds, sport catalysts and rear muffler.

Sporty elegance characterizes the design of the TechArt aerodynamic-enhancement kit: The production front apron receives more visual emphasis from the TechArt front spoiler. But that’s not all: The spoiler reduces aerodynamic lift, thus further improving directional stability at high speeds.

2008 Saturn Astra

DETROIT — General Motors formally announced on Thursday what had been rumored for months: that Saturn will further expand its U.S. lineup with yet another Opel product, the compact Astra.

So Maserati's decision to equip the Quattroporte with a proper six-speed auto 'box is good news. The all-new transmission system promises to smooth up gear changes and, thanks to a torque converter, boost low-rev pick-up without limiting power.

We wouldn't have said no to a nice manual 'box, but we're old-school like that.

The Quattroporte Automatic is set to show off its new transmission at the Detroit motor show in January and goes on sale soon after.

Sneak Peek of Kia Kue Concept

DETROIT — Kia Motors has released a sketch of its coming Kue concept, set to be unveiled here at the 2007 North American International Auto Show this coming January.

Kia kueAccording to the company, the Kia Kue employs a different approach to the crossover utility vehicle segment by ramping up the emphasis on performance.

"Kue is designed first and foremost as a driver's vehicle. While possessing SUV characteristics and capabilities, the Kia Kue focuses more on giving the driver an exhilarating driving experience on the way to the home improvement center than on how much it can haul," the company said in a statement.

The Kia Kue has a monocoque platform and sits on 22-inch tires with a wheelbase of more than 114 inches, packaged in an overall length of 186 inches.

While only a concept, the company says it may hint at future styling for Kia products.

Mercedes-Benz Adds New Diesel V8 to S-Class

STUTTGART, Germany — Mercedes-Benz said it is rolling out a second diesel offering for its flagship S-Class lineup this month, a new 2006 S420 CDI.

new 2006 Mercedes-Benz S420 CDI The latest edition to the S-Class lineup develops 320 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque from a 3996cc CDI engine with twin turbochargers. The engine is mated to a standard seven-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel gearshift controls.

The S420 CDI sprints from zero to 62 mph in 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph. The company said the more powerful diesel model replaces the V8-powered S400 CDI.

Standard features include automatic climate controls, 17-inch five-spoke light alloy wheels, front and rear side airbags, tinted laminated glass and speed-sensitive power steering. The extended-wheelbase model adds leather upholstery, a power sunroof and a rear bench seat with power-adjustable outer seats.

Mercedes-Benz said the short-wheelbase version of the S420 CDI starts at the equivalent of $112,300, and the long-wheelbase version starts at the equivalent of $122,475.

Europe’s largest HUMMER dealer and leading European tuner of American automobiles built a Christmas HUMMER with lots of festive extras for the TV magazine Galileo on the German ‘Pro 7’ channel.

On the outside St. Nick’s new company vehicle sports a fiery red special-effect paintjob from Munich paint specialist Michael Rollwage, complete with an airbrushed winter scene and a depiction of the Star of Bethlehem.

The body was also modified extensively. The front doors no longer open in the conventional way; they now open by swinging up like gullwing doors. Tin-coated metal moldings that have been welded seamlessly into the rear side window openings turn the H2 into a true panel cruiser. To perfect the Christmas looks the body was further fitted with 250 LED lamps that clearly define the H2’s contours at night.

The H2 also provides everything Santa needs for his winter fitness program: A specially designed external rear luggage rack safely holds two HEAD Snowboards as well as two EBRA curling stones and hockey sticks. A large roof carrier box is also part of the exclusive equipment as is an old-fashioned sled.

The spectacular GeigerCars.de Christmas HUMMER looks are further characterized by 10Jx22 chrome wheels with Pirelli Scorpion ATR tires in size 325/55 R 22.

And should the snow get too deep for even the HUMMER H2, Santa Claus can switch to the snowmobile painted in the same theme as the HUMMER itself. The GeigerCars.de technicians custom-built a special trailer based on an ALKO chassis that runs on the same 22-inch light-alloy wheels as the Christmas HUMMER.

Special emphasis was placed on a cuddly interior ambiance. Master upholsterer Andi Richter fitted the entire interior with red leather and carpet, color-coordinated with the exterior color. Walnut-burl applications add further attractive visual highlights.

Reportedly Santa Claus is a big music enthusiast and thus sound specialist Thomas Regler equipped the HUMMER with a custom-tailored JBL sound system with 3,800 watts. But why stop there? The images from the digital TV receiver or from a DVD play on no less than three screens; in the front row, in the lavish rear compartment and in what used to be the trunk.

All it takes to start a great après-ski party is to open the liftgate: The restyled trunk now not only offers maximum viewing pleasure with a 42-inch LCD widescreen TV, and sound from the mighty JBL speakers: Integrated thermos cans provide hot mulled wine while a heated stainless-steel box can hold warm cookies.

For a comfortable and romantic time after the party the rear compartment – visually enlarged by a mirror on the rear wall – features an electric fireplace with white fake bearskin rug, an auxiliary Webasto heater and a large red leather couch.

The GeigerCars.de Christmas HUMMER represents a value of some 110,000 Euros and was raffled off among the Galileo viewers. We don’t know what Santa Claus thought about the loss of his 320-hp company vehicle.

Mercedes Driving School Heads to Sweden

ARJEPLOG, Sweden — If you want to take on the frozen North in the hottest cars from Mercedes-Benz AMG, better book your spot for the January 2008 session.

Reservations for 2008 will be booked starting in January at the AMG Web site.

The event takes drivers close to the Arctic Circle in an area that Mercedes-Benz says is a "global test center for the automotive industry." Driving exercises take place over four days on a frozen lake. The drivers practice several techniques, including drifting, a skill for optimum vehicle control on slippery surfaces. AMG specialists record the drivers' input, "making it possible to log not only sector and lap times, but also longitudinal and lateral acceleration," the automaker said.

Top performers in the session are honored at an evening event that features culinary treats from Northern Sweden served around an open fire in a traditional Lappish wooden teepee.

Toyota Auris in the spring

Do you know when Toyota introduced the original Corolla? 1966.
The year that England won the World Cup, and Chris Evans first entered this mortal coil. A mixed bag, then, in the past 40 years, the Corolla has become the best-selling nameplate in the world.
But Toyota has finally decided to replace the quadragenarian hatchback with this: the Auris.


Toyota Auris 2Toyota AurisToyota Auris 3Although similar in styling to the Corolla, the Auris is built on an all-new platform, bigger in every department. Toyota reckons it's one of the quietest cars around, too, with slicker aerodynamics and a strong underbody reducing road noise.

The Auris also gets a fresh chassis and suspension set-up, with MacPherson struts at the front on all models. The top-of-the-range D-4D 180 features a double-wishbone rear suspension system, which should keep it from rolling in the bends.

That D-4D 180 looks like the most exciting engine in the line-up. A 2.2-litre diesel block nicked from the Avensis, the unit will help the Auris hit 62mph in just over six seconds while still returning 46mpg.

There's also the choice of a further two diesel burners and a pair of petrol engines.

Passengers should find the Auris a more comfortable place with extra head- and legroom, as well as buckets of storage space. With Toyota's customary commitment to safety, the Auris is available with up to nine airbags and a bewildering array of electronic acronyms.

The Auris will hit the UK in three- and five-door guise on February 1.
Toyota is remaining tight-lipped about the prices, but the Auris should square up to the Ford Focus and Honda Civic.

1938 Lancia Aprilia Sport Reconstructed by Zagato

(from Zagato Press Release) This “car of the future” could aptly be described as an original 1930s design brought to life using the technology of the third Millennium.

To celebrate the centenary of Lancia and the long standing affiliation between the marque and the Milanese coachbuilder for its Sport versions, Andrea Zagato decided to create a Lancia Aprilia Sport identical to the car built by his grandfather Ugo in 1938.

As the original car no longer exists, state of the art digitalisation, CAD modelling and CNC machining technologies were used to reconstruct the plans for this version of the Aprilia Sport, which most effectively expressed the aeronautical themes of the 1930s.

The sheet metal of the bodywork was then skilfully hand crafted by master panel beaters, working on a solid, machined buck.

The final result is a symphony of perfectly taut lines and seamless highlights, impeccably resolving the limitations of prewar construction techniques in putting a concept into reality.

Shaped like the cross section of a wing, in a single volume undisturbed by external fenders, this car is a milestone in the almost 90 years of history of Zagato.

Toyota To Show Tundra CrewMax in Motown

TORRANCE, Calif. — Toyota said on Tuesday that it will introduce its 2007 Tundra CrewMax pickup truck on January 7 at the Detroit auto show.

2007 Toyota Tundra CrewMax pickup truckThe CrewMax is the four-door version of the Tundra. The second-generation Tundra will come with three engine choices: a 4.0-liter V6, a 4.7-liter V8 and a new 5.7-liter V8 that is mated to a new heavy-duty six-speed automatic transmission.

The big V8 has a towing capacity of more than 10,000 pounds, according to Toyota. The Tundra gets more luxurious for the new model year, too, with a lineup of new options that include a JBL audio system with Bluetooth capability, a 10-way power driver seat and a backup camera.

The Tundra is slated to hit showrooms in early 2007.

Toyota says its full-size truck will be available in 31 model configurations, with a choice of 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains. The redesigned Tundra is built in Texas and Indiana.

Peugeot 207 CC

When Peugeot released the 206 CC in 2001, it went on to become the best-selling coupe-cabriolet for three years in a row. Even the 307 CC - despite weighing more than a small meteor - has been a popular little number during the past couple of years.

With this track record in shifting fashionable - if somewhat uninspired - coupe-cabriolets, it's no surprise Peugeot has announced that a folding-top version of the 207 will reach the UK next March.

peugeot 207 ccpeugeot 207 cc 2peugeot 207 cc 3peugeot 207 cc 4The 207 CC has typical Peugeot coupe-cabriolet styling, with a low, sloped windscreen and high haunches. In fact, the CC sits 8cm lower than its fixed-roof cousin, giving it an even squatter and more feline appearance.

Believe it or not, the two-piece folding roof is brand new. Peugeot has done away with the irksome manual release of the 206 CC, making the operation fully automatic.

Peugeot says it has improved rigidity and safety, with strengthened upper panel and tubular reinforcement bars providing greater torsion and crash protection. The 207 CC also gets five airbags, including the modish driver's knee 'bag.

Trim levels are high, with aircon and sports seats as standard. There's the option of leather trim, a fragrance diffuser - seriously - and GPS satnav.

With the choice of one diesel and two petrol engines, the 207 CC's performance looks to be sedate rather than startling. Top of the range is the 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol unit with 150bhp, which Peugeot reckons will crack 0-62mph in 8.6 seconds.

A 120bhp version of the same block and a 1.6-litre HDi diesel with 110bhp bring up the rear.

A five-speed manual 'box comes as standard with all the engines, but the less powerful petrol model has the option of a four-speed auto 'box with Tiptronic control.

No word on prices from Peugeot at the moment, but expect the 207 CC to sell like, erm, the 206 CC when it goes on sale in March 2007.

4x4s hit for six

Has the 4x4 bubble finally burst?

suzuki suvAfter 10 years of continuous growth in the SUV sector, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has announced that 4x4 sales fell by 14 per cent in November.

In fact, SUV sales have fallen every month this year with the exception of March. This is in contrast to sales of small cars and people carriers, which have increased significantly this year.

Motor groups have blamed the slump in sales on a combination of public resentment of SUVs and increasing Government pressure.

Gordon Brown's introduction of a £215 top rate of vehicle excise duty for the most polluting cars has been singled out, along with Ken Livingstone's announcement in July that he was considering trebling the congestion charge for Band G vehicles.

While environmentalists have hailed the news of falling sales as a victory, the RAC said that much criticism of 4x4s was ill-informed, with many people carriers and large saloons creating more pollution than the smaller SUVs.

Honda's Accord Coupe Concept Sketch

TORRANCE, Calif. — Honda released a teaser sketch of the Accord Coupe concept on Tuesday, saying the car will make its debut at the upcoming North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Honda described the sketch as a "bold new look" for its Accord coupe and noted that the Detroit show will mark the first time an Accord concept car has ever been shown at a major auto show.

"The Accord Coupe Concept will convey exterior styling cues and design features that provide a first look at the direction the next-generation Accord will take," Honda said in a statement. "It promises to set a new benchmark for Accord and for the segment."

The Accord is Honda's best-selling model in North America.

The sketch shows the Accord Coupe concept from the rear. It appears to be low-slung, with quad exhaust, large wheels and an abbreviated greenhouse. The 2007 Accord Coupe is equipped with either a 2.4-liter inline-4 that makes 166 horsepower or a 3.0-liter V6 that makes 244 hp.

Jaguar S-Type gets the Botox treatment

We're going to have to wait a while for the new Jaguar XF, so in the meantime Jag has been ladling some new sauce over the S-Type's pasta-faced visage.

The doughy S-Type also has some minor interior improvements, but overall this is sloppy seconds, or even thirds if you count the 2002 facelift of the original version.

Not very appetising, but at least there are the same three hearty engines dishing up plenty of performance, and Jaguar has lowered the entrée price to £28,995.

Smart Rolls Out 2007 Fortwo "Edition Limited One"

STUTTGART, Germany — Smart rolled out its 2007 Fortwo "edition limited one" at the Bologna Motor Show here on Tuesday, saying that the car demonstrates customization possibilities for the European market.

With the limited edition, Smart tries to inject more of a luxury feel into the little city car, with a special pyrite gray exterior, cognac-brown used-napa-leather look trim in the cabin and velour floor mats. Exterior features include a panoramic roof with a sun blind and 15-inch alloy wheels in a six-spoke design.

The "edition limited one" is powered by a 71-horsepower gasoline engine with a maximum speed of 90 mph. The engine is linked to a new five-speed manual transmission.

The "edition limited one" will be available starting in mid-January.
Prices have not yet been announced. The Smart brand is due to roll out in the U.S. in 2008.

This year will surely go down as the busiest ever in the history of Audi, and it's not finished yet.

First up is a new 158bhp 1.8-litre turbocharged engine for the A3, although this engine will soon be rolled out across the A4 range too.

Called the A3 1.8 TFSi, it sees off 0-62mph in 8.0 seconds flat and tops out at 136mph, while economy of 38.6mpg is possible. Prices start at £18,100 for this model.

Next, we have a new 2.8-litre V6 FSi petrol engine for the A6 range, which churns out 207bhp through manual or auto gearboxes. Top speed is 151mph and 0-62mph takes 7.9 seconds, and all from £29,125.
