2007 Audi R8

(from Audi Press Release) Audi R8

Audi has incorporated the name and the genes of the five-time Le Mans winner, the Audi R8, into a spectacular sports car. Three years after the unveiling of the Audi Le Mans quattro concept car, the production version will be making its debut at the Paris Motor Show in the guise of the new Audi R8 mid-engined sports model.
It is a fascinating driving machine and the sporty pinnacle of the Audi brand. The mid-mounted 420 bhp V8 FSI engine, quattro permanent four-wheel drive and Audi Space Frame aluminium body form the basis for truly outstanding driving dynamics. The Audi R8 will be available to order from 28 September 2006; first deliveries will be made in the first half of 2007.

2007 Audi R82007 Audi R8 22007 Audi R8 32007 Audi R8 4The exterior

Even at first glance, the calibre of the car is plain to see. The Audi R8 sits broad and squat on the road, the strongly accentuated rear end appearing to flex its muscles like a sprinter ready for the off.

The characteristic proportions of the vehicle are dictated by the location of the engine behind the cockpit. This layout is a typical feature of race cars. One of the most striking examples of this design – and as such one of the legitimate antecedents of the Audi R8 – was, and still is, the Auto Union Type C Grand Prix car. The central position of the engine is above all a boon to driving dynamics, as it allows for a weight distribution, as on the R8, of 44 percent to the front and 56 percent to the rear.

The car's body is highly compact in appearance. The front end and the gently curved roof arc are drawn in a sweeping line; a line which immediately marks the two-seater out as an Audi.
The interior

The sporty interior is dominated by a totally driver-oriented cockpit architecture, integrating the driver between the dashboard and the high centre console. The instrument panel above the console is angled slightly towards the driver. The flat-bottomed steering wheel is a typical feature of the sportiest Audi models, and also enables comfortable sports car entry and exit.

Form follows function: this design principle is implemented throughout the Audi R8. Alongside the driver-oriented architecture, also reflected in the styling of the side window sills, the choice of materials also makes for a highly functional look and feel. Looking around when in the driving seat makes one thing clear: just like in the R8 race car, the styling and placement of all the elements in the cockpit of this driving machine is focussed on the essentials. The centrepoint of everything is the driver.

The drive train

Turbine-like power up to the highest rev ranges, a high maximum torque, all combined with a fascinating sound, are the characteristics of a perfect sports car engine. An engine that is fascinating both in terms of its enormous power potential and its suitability for everyday use.

In the high-revving 420 bhp eight-cylinder engine, the evolution of FSI petrol direct injection technology has reached a new high. This technology has also enjoyed many triumphs in the Audi R8 race car.

The figures illustrate the outstanding potential of the eight-cylinder unit. At 7,800 rpm the 4.2-litre engine delivers 309 kW (420 bhp) of power output. Peak torque is 430 Newton-metres from 4.500 to 6,000 rpm. And no less than 90 per cent of this maximum torque is maintained consistently throughout a wide engine speed range from 3,500 all the way to 7,600 rpm. As a result of these qualities, the eight-cylinder power unit provides maximum thrust in virtually any driving situation.

The performance figures are equally impressive: the R8 accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 301 km/h.

The engine is a high-revving unit. The maximum engine speed is 8,250 rpm. The advantages of this principle are superior power output at high engine speeds and a smooth, eager responsiveness all across the revs range. Added to this are its agility, liveliness and engine sound, which is similar to that of a race car.

The chassis

The chassis features forged aluminium double wishbones at the front and rear. At the front they are triangulated, while at the rear the top one is triangulated and the bottom one is a triangulated wishbone with a track rod. This provides for optimum wheel control, and is a geometry which has proved itself to be the ideal solution in delivering agility, maximum steering precision and precisely defined self-steering characteristics.

Direct, hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering provides optimum feedback to assist the driver.

The spring and damper set-up is stiff in order to deliver maximum driving dynamics, while still providing a quite astonishing level of ride comfort. This is particularly true when the 'Audi magnetic ride' adaptive damper system is chosen as an alternative to the standard gas-filled shock absorbers.

The reason for this is that these shock absorbers employ an innovative technology. Instead of the conventional damper fluid, a magnetorheological fluid is used – in other words, a fluid whose viscosity can be influenced by an electromagnetic field. This effect enables the damping characteristic to be influenced electronically at will and instantaneously, by applying a voltage to the electromagnets.

Equipment and trim

Even the standard equipment of the Audi R8 meets the high demands of customers in this segment. Xenon plus lights, LED rear lights and daytime running lights, 18-inch aluminium wheels, an audio system with 7-inch monitor, an anti-theft alarm and Leather/Alcantara interior trim are just some of the items on the extensive list of standard features.

The range of optional extras leaves virtually nothing to be desired. A Bang & Olufsen sound system, featuring an output of 465 watts and 12 specially designed speakers, delivers surround sound of the highest standard. A microphone-based vehicle noise compensation system adjusts audio levels to changing road conditions and speeds.

The acoustic parking system and a rear-view camera help the driver to manoeuvre into even the tightest of spaces. The radio/navigation system plus, featuring a large-format colour monitor and MMI keypad, combines extensive functionality with extreme user-friendliness.

A range of coordinated and ideally combinable design and leather trim packages from Audi and from quattro GmbH can turn any R8 into the customer’s personal dream car.

The wheels range offers design alternatives in sizes of 18 and 19 inches, fitted with 235/35 size tyres at the front and up to 295/30 at the rear. A total of eight exterior colours are available, from Ibis White to Phantom Black, pearl effect.

The craftsmanship

The Audi R8 is being built on a small-lot production line in a specially constructed new block at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm. The entire production process – from the bodyshell construction to final assembly – is organised in the same way as a craft workshop. Small teams of specialists accompany every step of production, subjecting every part and component to intense scrutiny. This ensures that every one of the maximum of 15 cars per day built will more than match the customary high quality standards of the Audi product range.

The equipment specifications, data and prices stated here refer to the model range offered for sale in Germany. Subject to amendment; errors and omissions excepted.

2007 Gemballa Porsche Carrera Mirage GT

(from Gemballa Press Release) High-end-Tuning for the Carrera GT: Racing-look GEMBALLA Mirage GT with more power.

2007 Gemballa Porsche Carrera Mirage GT2007 Gemballa Porsche Carrera Mirage GT 22007 Gemballa Porsche Carrera Mirage GT 32007 Gemballa Porsche Carrera Mirage GT 42007 Gemballa Porsche Carrera Mirage GT 5Around 1500 of Porsche's prestige product, the Carrera GT, have been built, all of which have now been sold. Owners worried about the individuality of their vehicle, in spite of its rareness, would be well-advised to make an appointment with GEMBALLA. Thanks to its expertise, as the only Porsche tuner GEMBALLA has comprehensively modified the high-tech car from Weissach, while at the same time adding an individual touch. In addition, performance addicts can obtain even more of what they want. The spectacular end product answers to the name of GEMBALLA Mirage GT and outshines its production-line counterpart in every respect.

The Carrera GT engine is a dream. A meaty 5.7-litre V10 boasting 612 horsepower. What more could one want? More power of course! GEMBALLA operates on the same principle as racing drivers: "You can never have too much power". By modifying the engine management electronics, GEMBALLA has been able to squeeze out a further 60 bhp of power and 20 Nm more torque for the V10, slicing off 0.1 seconds off the time it takes to go from 0 to 100 km/h. The added performance has also been aided by a new, fully stainless steel exhaust system that now resounds through four tail pipes instead of the standard two. GEMBALLA has positioned the two extra tail pipes where the reverse and fog warning lamps used to be. The tuning specialist has relocated the two lamps to beneath the rear diffuser.

Complete racing look

With the GEMBALLA BODY-CONCEPT, the Mirage GT looks like it is planning to enter the Le Mans 24-hour race. The most conspicuous change to the front are the additional air intakes on the new front spoiler. In addition, GEMBALLA embellished the component with a spoiler lip. The bonnet has also been replaced. In the area between the wheel housing and door GEMBALLA has replaced the standard side panels with its own mudguards, with reshaped openings which blend harmoniously with the original design. Down below, new side skirts lend the vehicle a muscular line. They also come with a cooling vent for the breaks at the rear. One thing is certain! The racing look is enhanced by the new rear skirt, with its aerodynamically optimised mid section for more downforce on the rear axle.

The lion's share of the extra downforce over the production-line vehicle is due to the mighty GEMBALLA rear wing that adorns the rear of the car. For better slowing, it comes with an brake-flap in the middle - like the kind seen on the Bugatti Veyron - which snaps up when the brakes are applied. The roof line of the GEMBALLA Mirage GT also starkly differs from the standard Carrera GT. The front section of an airbox has been integrated into the new GEMBALLA hardtop. This ends in an air duct that runs along the back of the tailgate installed by GEMBALLA and supplies the power-enhanced V10-engine with more air to breathe.

With the GEMBALLA body kit, the Mirage GT fits perfectly into the starting line-up of any FIA-GT race. Not least also because of the materials used by GEMBALLA - all parts of the body of the Mirage GT are made of carbon fibre; a material common in the world of racing.

The GEMBALLA Mirage GT also sports a high-tech pair of "shoes". GEMBALLA fits the three-part rims, with their fully-milled spoke wheel centre front (9.5 x 19Ѕ) and back (12.5 x 20"). Excellent road holding is guaranteed on the front axle by 265-35 R 19 tyres and on the rear axle by 335-30 R 20 tyres.

The motor sports look created on the outside thanks to the carbon components is resumed in the interior. GEMBALLA has restyled the central console, which likewise consists of this high-grade material. This is joined by countless other carbon components, such as, for example, the door cladding. GEMBALLA has also integrated a multimedia touch-screen information system into the central console. In addition, the passengers' senses of sight, smell and touch are also spoilt by the finest leather and luxury carpets. The modified steering wheel allows the driver to keep a strong grip on the reins of the GEMBALLA Mirage GT.

The Mirage GT is an impressive example of GEMBALLA's capability, and represents high-end tuning at its best. The cost of the comprehensive conversion, which can only be carried out by GEMBALLA, starts from EUR 229,800.

650 hp: Mercedes-Benz Rolls Out SLR McLaren 722 Edition

DUBAI — Noting that "many wealthy sheikhs have become avid automobile aficionados," Mercedes-Benz used the setting of the Arabian desert to roll out its stunning new 650-hp SLR McLaren 722 Edition. The special model gets a boost in horsepower, improved aerodynamics and such racing touches as red seatbelts for more "visual impact."

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 EditionThe limited-edition model — only 150 are being made — outstrips the peak performance of the current SLR model. The SLR 722 Edition is powered by a 5.5-liter supercharged V8 that is assembled by hand at the Mercedes-AMG engine workshops in Affalterbach, Germany. The engine is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission which the company says was developed in-house.

The special model sprints from zero to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds versus 3.8 seconds in the SLR. It also beats the conventional SLR in top speed. The SLR 722 Edition has a top speed of 209 mph versus a top speed of 207 mph in the current SLR.

There is a story behind the car's intriguing name. Mercedes says the SLR 722 Edition is inspired by a 1955 victory by British motor-racing legend Stirling Moss and his co-driver Denis Jenkinson at the Mille Miglia, the classic Italian endurance race. Moss piloted a Mercedes-Benz 300SLR with start number 722, which denoted the car's start time of 7:22 a.m. As the company notes, the new model is designed to "outperform its historic forefather."

Details of note include chassis construction with an antiroll bar positioned above the front axle where it is controlled via rocker arms, or identical to the setup found on a Formula 1 car. The chassis also has been lowered for increased directional stability and better handling. Body roll in corners has been cut by more than 20 percent. The SLR McLaren 722 also gets new 19-inch forged aluminum wheels, larger Brembo brakes with red-painted brake calipers, and a body shell made from carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, another technology borrowed from Formula 1.

An air splitter at the front end increases downforce while reducing the drag coefficient. Small wheel spoilers reduce air swirl at the rear axle.

The German automaker says the SLR McLaren 722 is aimed at "gentleman drivers and affluent sports car collectors."

No word yet on pricing.

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti special edition

Diamonds are the usual gift to celebrate a 60th anniversary, but Ferrari has had a much better idea.
Instead of mere rocks, the Italian firm has announced it will build 60 612 Scaglietti special editions.

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti special editionFerrari 612 Scaglietti special edition 2Each of the 60 cars will be linked to a specific event in Ferrari's history and feature an enamel plaque on the cabin's central tunnel to distinguish them.

Every car will be finished in a two-tone paint scheme, while a new electrochromatic sunroof allows the occupants to adjust how much sun it lets in by adjusting its transparency.

The 60 special edition Scagliettis are not the only celebration for Ferrari reaching bus pass age.

The company has also kicked off a tour starting in Abu Dhabi that will head all the way around the world, passing a baton between 10,000 Ferrari owners.

After traversing the Middle East, the baton makes its way across China, Japan, Australia, South Africa, the US and the whole of Europe, finishing in Maranello - of course - on June 23.

Volkswagen Kicks Off Search for Vintage Diesel Vehicles

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In its ongoing push to promote diesel vehicles to the American public, Volkswagen on Tuesday kicked off a U.S. search for the oldest running VW diesel vehicle and the VW diesel with the most mileage.

1977 vw rabbit vintageWinners of the contest will get the use of a 2007 VW Touareg V10 TDI for six months. The company says it anticipates that the oldest running VW diesel will likely be a Rabbit, circa 1977, since 12,393 such vehicles were sold that year.

The contest will get started on March 1, when owners will be able to submit information, including digital pictures, online at www.vw.com. Finalists will be required to have their vehicle and its documentation validated at a VW dealership. Both vehicles must be equipped with their original engines.

The highest-mileage diesel VW is open to "registered and running vehicles." The mileage must be documented and verifiable with an odometer reading and service records.

"We anticipate an enormous response from our owners," said Keith Price, Volkswagen of America spokesman.

Report: No Go on Audi Shooting Brake

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — The Audi Shooting Brake concept, an expensive hatchback built on the same platform as the popular TT coupe, will not be put into production, according to a news report that quotes Audi Product Chief Ulrich Hackenburg.

Audi Shooting BrakeHackenburg told the Netherlands auto magazine Autovisie that the Shooting Brake would only eat market share for the TT coupe. The two cars use the same platform, although the Shooting Brake's wheelbase is 2 inches longer than the TT coupe's.

The Shooting Brake made its debut at the 2005 Tokyo Auto Show. It used a 250-horsepower 3.2-liter V6, Quattro permanent four-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission. It deviates stylistically from the TT, with a squared-off hatchback-style rear end. Although generally well received, there was some doubt, especially in North America, that consumers who are skittish about buying hatchbacks would plunk their money down for such an expensive one.

Project NSU TTS

I can still remember the days back in my home town in Germany when a 90-degree curve at the ice cream shop was the local hang out for teens and young adults. Everybody who thought they had a cool car had to cruise that curve more than once an evening to show off.
It was the early ‘80s and I can still picture the Simca Rallys and NSU TTs going around that bend as if they were on rails. That memory is what spurred me to find myself an NSU as my next project car. It was the only real choice after having several air-cooled VW Beetle projects. Like the vintage VWs, the NSU also has a rear engine which is air cooled……but this time it is an inline four.

Project NSU TTSProject NSU TTS 2Project NSU TTS 3History of the TTS

Those with modern knowledge of the Audi brand may think of the drop-top Nimbus-grey concept car of the 1990s first shown to hint at the then-upcoming Audi TT Roadster, as well as an S version that we never really got. However, only the more widely read Audiphiles will know that the name originally came from the hottest of all NSU Prinz models.

At the time, NSU customers wanted a sportier version of the Prinz 1000 following its market introduction. Even the TT version, which was produced 2 years later, had it limits due to its manifold and single carburator. It is said that NSU got the idea for the TTS from Siegfried Spiess, an NSU tuner that raced the TT. He took the TT and used the 1000 engine that had been modified with dual carbs and other performance enhancements to enter the car for the 1000cc motorsport series where he was very successful.

In February 1967, NSU started the production of the TTS for mainly motorsports purposes. The factory did everything they could to make the TTS a successful car in racing. The street version had a70hp 1000cc engine with forged pistons for the 10.5-1 compression ratio, bigger valves, dual 40 Solex carburetors, special cam, an optimized manifold and an oil cooler mounted under the bumper at the front to keep the engine cool. The race version had 85hp by using stacks instead of air filters, rejetting the two Solex carbs and using an open exhaust. Motorsport transmissions were offered and CV joint axles were introduced at the differential side.

You could order the TTS in any color you wanted so long as it was Alpha Red, though Targa Orange was introduced later to offer more selection. Through special order, you could also eventually add Silver Metallic, Aero Blue Metallic, Gemini Blue Metallic. Pastel White was also mentioned in later parts documents for the TTS from the period.

Only 2402 TTS models were build from 1967-1971.

Back to the Project

My biggest concern with taking on a project based on such a rare car was the availability of spare parts. Though a cottage industry exists for these cars in Germany, the following in North America is not surprisingly smaller. NSU TTs are still being raced in several motorsport series such as the NSU TT Trophy, Autocross and hill climbs in Germany and other European countries. After researching it a bit more I actually found quite a few resources that offer spare and motorsport parts for NSUs. However most of those shops are across the Atlantic, making their sourcing a bit of a trick.

Renault Clio F1 Team R27

It's called the Renault Clio F1 Team R27, but we can dispense with the mealy mouthed title and simply regard this hot Clio as the Cup version.

Renault Clio F1 Team R27Built to commemorate the launch of Renault's latest F1 car, this Clio comes with the same 197bhp 2.0-litre engine as the normal Renaultsport Clio, but stiffer, lower suspension is borrowed from the Cup race car and there are 17in alloy wheels finished a fetching anthracite colour scheme.

The R27 Clio will be built in limited numbers with only 500 cars being made, each with a plaque to prove it.

The car will be no quicker in a straight line, but Renault promises us it will be an even bigger hoot to drive than the standard 197.

Apparently an even hotter Clio with a turbocharged engine is on the cards. Watch this space.

Audi A3 3.2 S-line Titanium Package

What you see here is, thus far, one of a kind. An Audi Canada product planner ordered this particular Audi A3 3.2 S-line in Ibis White as an evaluation vehicle to help visualize a proposed ‘Titanium Package’ for the A3 S-line. First introduced last year on the A4 S-line, installation rates of the ‘Titanium Package’ have been so favorable that Audi of America is considering a broadening of the line. A3 S-line models offer the perfect opportunity for expansion.

Audi A3 3.2 S-line Titanium PackageAudi A3 3.2 S-line Titanium Package 2Audi A3 3.2 S-line Titanium Package 3Audi A3 3.2 S-line Titanium Package 4What is different from the standard A3 3.2 S-line?
The most obvious detail is the set of 18-inch titanium-finish wheels – quite similar in design to those on the RS 4. The other main exterior change to this car is a black grille surround, another special piece of kit from Audi’s in-house tailor quattro GmbH.

Inside, the darkened theme continues. Piano black interior trim takes the place of aluminum inserts on each of the door panels and on the center console. Above, a black headliner is the first such fitment in a North American A3, though already standard fare on Titanium Package A4 models.

Audi’s Titanium Package always looks the part on a white car, one reason this particular evaluation vehicle was ordered in Audi’s Ibis White. The A3’s contrasting white stitching on the black leather seats is an interesting accent that those of the A4 range don’t boast.

Sources inside Audi confirm that, if there is a Titanium Package for the Model Year 2008 A3, this is likely quite close to what you will see. Though each of the special pieces of trim found on this car had to be special-ordered, Audi employees have been pleased with the overall look and would likely not change it much if and when the Titanium Package is added to the order book. That said, Audi contacts are quick to point out that, while chances are awfully good, the final decision to build the A3 S-line with a Titanium Package has not been finalized.

So what will come of this very unique A3 that remains, for now, a one-off? Our American staff shooting the car were disappointed to learn that it is a Canadian-spec car and not easily for sale to our much-interested eyes. The instruments are in klicks, not miles and Audi sources tell us the car will go off to auction in Canada shortly since this A3 has served its purpose. Likely a Canadian dealership will buy the car and re-sell it as an Audi Certified Pre-Owned vehicle. Audi sources involved promise they’ll keep us informed, communicating what dealership ends up with the car. This information will then be shared via Fourtitude’s Audi News Blog and the A3 discussion forum just as soon as we learn it. It is our hope that a Fourtitude reader is lucky enough to pick up this very unique car.

GM Introducing 2007 Opel GT

RUSSELSHEIM, Germany — In an impressive example of how global collaboration can work, General Motors on Thursday rolled out the 264-horsepower 2007 Opel GT, the European variant of the Saturn Sky Red Line.

2007 Opel GT2007 Opel GT 22007 Opel GT 3The Opel roadster, which hits showrooms in March, will start at the equivalent of $39,675.

The new Opel two-seater will be built at the Wilmington, Delaware, plant next to its sister models, the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky. The Opel GT is nearly identical to its American sibling, except for a few changes that include badging, grille trim and taillamps.

Jointly developed by GM Powertrain engineers on both sides of the Atlantic, the Opel GT is equipped with a 264-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine based on the 2.2-liter direct injection unit available in the Vectra model range since 2004 and on the 2.0-liter turbo induction unit that made its debut in the Vectra GTS in spring 2003.

It has an output of 264 hp at 5,300 rpm and maximum torque of 260 pound-feet at 2,500 rpm. The engine is linked to a five-speed manual transmission.

2007 IMSA Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder

(from IMSA Press Release) Until recently, the German tuning company IMSA was not more than just an insider tip. But by now, it has achieved the ultimate breakthrough thanks to its first product, the Gallardo GTV. After all, the company from Bruggen treated the Gallardo’s power unit like nobody dared before. After this special treatment, the V10 power unit develops maximum output of 610 hp at 7900 rpm. In the near future, it will also be possible to experience this pleasure in an open car – since all GTV parts are now available for the Spyder as well.

2007 IMSA Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder2007 IMSA Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder 22007 IMSA Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder 3Special emphasis was made on road capability.

In spite of the increased engine power and the high torque of 655 Nm at 5300 rpm, IMSA wanted the Gallardo to be suitable for everyday use; it had to offer the best possible driving fun even under bad weather conditions. Therefore, the four-wheel drive – amongst other things – was adjusted to the new
performance. Even during extreme driving manoeuvres, the Gallardo’s ne-tuned sport chassis offers great stability and driving control.

The necessary grip is provided by broad 245/30 ZR 20 front and 325/25 ZR20 rear tyres. IMSA’s focus was on muscular design and, thus, the Gallardo Spyder is equipped with new front and rear aprons and flared wheelarches as well as distinctive spoke wheels with central locking and a discreet rear spoiler. The interior is designed to meet any customer’s individual wishes: leather, alcantara, aluminium and CFRP are on offer to refine the Gallardo’s cockpit.

Big LUV: Edag To Reveal Full-Size Pickup Concept

FULDA, Germany — German vehicle engineering specialist Edag has announced it will reveal a new pickup truck concept at the Geneva Motor Show in early March.

edag luvedag luv 2edag luv 3Dubbed LUV for Luxurious Utility Vehicle, the 224.4-inch long, 78.7-inch wide concept car is based on the Mercedes-Benz GL. It is intended as a showcase of the company's ability to develop niche models through to production.

Sporting a large chromed grille in front and an expansive tray table at the rear, the big four-wheel-drive vehicle has clearly been designed to appeal to American car buyers. Among the highlights are a series of teak applications that help to lend a nautical air to the LUV.

It will be another month or so before Edag lifts the covers on its new concept, but in the meantime, sketches reveal it shares key design cues with the Mercedes-Benz GL.

Using a double-cab layout, the LUV provides seating for up to five adults in two rows. Edag's decision to use the GL as the basis for its latest concept is no coincidence. For some time, rumors have circulated that Mercedes-Benz was considering building a pickup version of its big off-roader as a rival to the Cadillac Escalade EXT. The German carmaker even went as far as to preview such a vehicle as part of a computer-generated video presentation at a closed-door event for media at its Sindelfingen design center on the outskirts of Stuttgart in 2005.

Although the LUV is described as a one-off, Edag officials don't rule out the possibility it will reach production in small numbers.

Mercedes A-Class: New Task

A Mercedes A-Class with fuel cell power. Not that much of a revelation nowadays, or that exciting for anyone who loves their cars.

Mercedes A-ClassBut paint it red and stick some lights and sirens on, and you have one of the most exciting prospects on the planet.

That's exactly what Mercedes did for the Sacramento fire department, creating what it describes as the world's first fuel cell-powered fire response vehicle.

Response may be an optimistic phrase, because the A-Class can only manage 0-60mph in 16 seconds and a top speed of 85mph, and you'd better hope you live within a 100-mile range of the fire station, as otherwise the car will run out of power.

Still, it's still got to be huge smiles wailing your way through traffic. The only things missing are ladders and hoses.

Skoda's New Fabia To Debut

MLADA BOLESLAV, Czech Republic — Czech carmaker Skoda has released information and pictures of its forthcoming second-generation Fabia, which will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

new skoda fabianew skoda fabia 2A sister model to the Volkswagen Polo, the Fabia has become the brand's best-selling model since its debut eight years ago. Its reception has helped Skoda become more confident about its plans for worldwide expansion.

Images of the new model show that Skoda is continuing along the styling path first seen in the Roomster minivan-wagon, which was introduced a year ago. The same front-end treatment has been applied to the Fabia, and the profile reveals careful evolution from the look of its predecessor.

Inside, no radical changes are expected other than more equipment and a bit more room. The dashboard has been reorganized to make it more driver-friendly. Optional equipment includes a six-CD changer, automatic climate control, cornering headlights and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls.

Initially, seven engines will be offered — four gasoline and three diesel — ranging from a basic three-cylinder 1.2-liter that makes 60 horsepower to a 1.9-liter diesel with 103 hp.

The first cars will be delivered in March.

Volvo BeeVan

It's not often that truck drivers get to pretend they're at the wheel of a Formula One racer, but Volvo could solve that daydream with its latest concept lorry, the BeeVan.

Volvo BeeVanThis leviathan puts the driver centre stage, sitting in the middle of the cab rather than to one side, which Volvo's designers say gives the driver much better all-round vision.

The driver's field of vision is further improved by the curved windscreen and narrower front profile.

The BeeVan also uses cameras to eliminate blind spots, similar to the company's existing BLIS technology already used on some of its road cars.

Volvo has also designed the BeeVan to be much more aerodynamic than current truck design permits, with sidesteps that are hidden away and only slide out when needed.

One other touch the BeeVan has in common with an F1 car are the radiators that direct warm air up and over the engine to prevent it from interfering with engine cooling.

The BeeVan is still some way off being a reality, but Volvo says ideas from the vehicle could start to make it into production in the next couple of years.

2008 Volvo C30 Advertising

DETROIT — An angry audience throws tomatoes at the new C30. Soon after, a mob throws axes, frogs and arrows at the little Swedish hatchback.

2008 Volvo C302008 Volvo C30 2A strange new blog? No, it's Volvo's own commercials trashing the latest car in the company lineup.

The "Product of Freewill" campaign is aimed at the coveted youth market of 25-34-year-old shoppers and is slated to launch in the United States later this year, after running in Europe. The ads will precede the launch of the 2008 Volvo C30 in the U.S. They can be previewed at the Volvo Freewill Web site.

One ad, entitled "Love It/Hate It," zips back and forth between a white rabbit sitting in the grass near a C30 on a sunny day to a stormy day with a ratlike creature lurking near the car. Another spot called "Hiss It/Kiss It" shows dark shadows of a crowd firing axes, frogs and arrows at the C30, counterpointed by a crowd throwing hearts and butterflies. But the most stunning of all is probably "Tomatoes," which shows an angry theater audience hurling tomatoes at the C30.

Volvo says it is hoping to attract buyers who want a car that will stand out, even if it doesn't have universal appeal.

Gallardo Gets Midlife Help From Audi R8

SANT'AGATA BOLOGNESE, Italy — The four-year-old Lamborghini Gallardo looks set to benefit from a raft of developments created by parent company Audi for its newly introduced R8.

lamborghini gallardoAccording to the head of development at Audi, Ulrich Hackenberg, the R8 will donate its rear suspension and a number of other unspecified components to the Gallardo as part of a mid-life face-lift planned for the midengine two-seater in 2008.

Despite their outward differences, the Gallardo and R8 are based around a common set of mechanical components, making the proposed changes relatively inexpensive. The new rear suspension, a development of the Gallardo's existing double-wishbone setup, adopts a trailing link within its design that's claimed to provide added toe-in effect for what Hackenberg describes as "more controlled cornering."

Hackenberg, who has recently been chosen to oversee new-car development at Volkswagen, says the new arrangement will be tuned to suit the Gallardo's more sporting nature, with unique bushings and anti-roll bar rates helping to set it apart from the R8.

Other developments rumored but not yet officially confirmed for the face-lifted Gallardo include a new direct injection system for its 5.0-liter V10 engine. Among other fine tuning, it is expected to help boost the Sant'Agata supercar's reserves from today's 520 horsepower up to around 550. Such a system is already used on the R8's 4.2-liter V8, which produces 420 hp.

Montreal Show: $500K Pontiac Top Tuner Solstice Turns Heads

MONTREAL — The goal of the Canadian customizing team working on the neon green Pontiac Top Tuner Solstice was simple: Take a stock car to the "tuning extreme."

$500K Pontiac SolsticeThe result is a hardtop showstopper decked out in Vivacious Candy Green, with a red suede interior and a custom Pioneer audio/entertainment system. GM says the Top Tuner Solstice is projected to have a street value of $500,000.

Although the Detroit automaker doesn't specify the output on the tuned Solstice, which is equipped with a tuned 2.0-liter crate engine donated to the project by GM Performance Parts, the word on the street is that it's good for 500 horses.

The tuners added such goodies as LSJ connecting rods, a piston set for LSJ rods, adjustable cam gears, a high-performance cam set, an aluminum fabricated intake manifold and a CTS-V rear differential gearset.

Leading the project was Tajai Das from Elite Tuners of Canada, who is the brains behind the 1994 Acura Integra "Acurabot." Das turned to Chris Nankoo from Phat Custom Rides in Montreal to create the custom exterior body kit, which includes a custom fiberglass hardtop, a fiberglass hood and a wide-body ground effects kit. GM said more than 30 companies from around Canada participated in the project.

The Top Tuner Solstice is just now making the rounds of major auto shows, putting in an appearance at the 2007 Montreal International Auto Show, which runs until January 28.
The Top Tuner Solstice was unveiled at the 2006 Sport Compact Performance Show in Montreal last October and earned an armload of awards at the 2006 SEMA show.

2007 JE Design SEAT Leon 1 P FR

(from JE Design Press Release)
Already fully tuned and styled: The new Seat Leon 1 P "FR" from JE DESIGN

* Power boost FR-TDI up to around 142 kW / 193 bhp and 410 Nm
* Power boost FR-TFSI up to around 180 kW / 244 bhp and 355 Nm
* 19 inch set of wheels "Multispoke" and suspension lowering by 35 mm
* 4-piston sports braking system
* Complete aerodynamic body-styling kit

2007 JE Design SEAT Leon2007 JE Design SEAT Leon 22007 JE Design SEAT Leon 32007 JE Design SEAT Leon 4After JE DESIGN, a well-known SEAT customising specialist, tuned the new Leon two months prior to its market launch, the same tuning specialist from Leingarten, Germany, has now turned its attention to the "FR" version.

The core of the modifications is the power boost to the 2.0 TDI engine. Instead of 125 kW (170 bhp), it now generates a solid 142 kW (193 bhp) with a torque increase from 85 to 410 Nm. The modifications to the engine management system permit better driving performance: A top speed of 224 km/h (series: 218 km/h) and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds (series: 8.2) send out a clear message! The power boost comes with a TV parts certificate. Needless to say, the TDI still complies with the EI regulations. An electronic power boost for the new 2.0 TFSI with 147 KW / 200 bhp leads to a terrific 180 kW (244 bhp) with a torque boost up to 355 Nm at 1,850 rpm. Here, too, the modifications to the engine management system permit enhanced driving performance: A top speed of 235 km/h (series: 229 km/h) and acceleration from 0 to 100 in 6.5 seconds (series: 7.3)! This power boost also comes with a TV parts certificate. In each case, the price includes a 1-year guarantee on the engine, drive train and gearbox. Upon request and subject to an extra charge, this can be extended by a further 12 months. A power boost for the new Leon CUPRA 2.0 TFSI with 176 KW / 240 bhp is in the pipeline.

JE DESIGN starts on a sporty note at the front by fitting a new front grille without a brand logo that features a grille insert. Headlight eyebrows lend this Spaniard a more aggressive look.

A sporty front spoiler featuring an additional air vent in the corners make the Seat Leon look even classier when overtaking. JE DESIGN enhances the side view by fitting a set of side sills. The tuning specialist completes the rear view of this Spaniard by fitting a rear apron. Last but not least, a rear spoiler goes to create greater downforce on the rear axle, particularly at high speeds. These aerodynamic body-styling components are also available as a complete kit. In addition, it is also possible to order the self-adhesive JE-DESIGN roof fin "Shark attack" in a matt black finish.

Upon request, it is also possible to order a 4-pipe stainless steel rear silencer with chrome-plated tailpipes. This not only promises to generate an awesome sound, but also optimises the engine performance by reducing the back pressure.

The growing desire for chrome also leaves its mark on the Leon range from JE DESIGN. Besides a four-piece set of door handle surrounds, the price also includes the B-post trim "3 D Chrome" with a chrome inlay and a rear door surround in addition to the trim panel for the lower section of the boot lid.

Customers can choose from five sets of wheels. The climax of the offering in 17, 18 and 19 inch versions is the "Multispoke" complete set of wheels in chrome look in the dimension 8.0 x 19 ET 45 with size 225/35 R 19 Y tyres.

JE DESIGN also ensures that the Seat Leon remains sure-footed despite its extra power. The suspension range comprises a set of sports suspension struts, which brings the Leon FR around 30mm closer to the ground, and which noticeably improves the handling and ride comfort due to the lower centre of gravity.

Alternatively, the tuning specialist offers sportier handling in the form of a coil-over suspension kit, which changes the road clearance of this fiery Spaniard in the range from 35 to 65 mm. Upon request, constantly-acting deceleration from high speeds is guaranteed by a 4-piston sports braking system (330 x 28 mm) on the front axle.

Ford Edge Plug-In Hybrid Goes to DC

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a move designed to take some of the wattage out of the electric Chevrolet Volt, Ford on Monday rolled out a 41-mpg version of the Ford Edge with HySeries Drive, a prototype fuel cell hybrid electric plug-in.

Ford Edge HybridFord Edge Hybrid 2Ford Edge Hybrid 3The Volt may have been the darling of the recent 2007 North American International Auto Show, but it is not yet ready for the street. Ford showcased the Edge prototype by taking the media and lawmakers on brief test drives in advance of this week's Washington auto show and on the eve of President Bush's State of the Union address, which is expected to urge action on biofuels, hybrids and better fuel economy.

Ford was careful to emphasize that "many significant technical hurdles need to be overcome" before the Edge with HySeries Drive becomes a reality. The automaker said that the single biggest hurdle to plug-ins remains the cost of lithium-ion batteries.

The Edge with HySeries Drive uses what Ford calls a "real-world version" of the power plant envisioned in the Ford Airstream concept that was unveiled earlier this month at the Detroit auto show. The name is derived from the powertrain's structure: a hydrogen fuel-cell-powered series hybrid powertrain.

The Edge prototype weighs 5,400 pounds, over 1,000 pounds more than a conventional Edge. It has five basic parts: a fuel cell, a hydrogen tank, two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack.

With its batteries fully charged, the Edge prototype can go about 25 miles on electricity alone. Once the batteries discharge about 60 percent, the fuel cell switches on to power the electric motors and recharge the battery pack, giving the vehicle another 200 miles of range.

Ford says the HySeries Drive powertrain delivers a combined city/highway gas equivalent fuel economy rating of 41 mpg. For those who drive fewer than 50 miles per day, the average jumps to the equivalent of more than 80 mpg.

Diesels: DCX Announces New Pickup Engine, Pricing on CRD Cherokee

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD, the Chrysler Group's first diesel-powered full-size SUV, will be priced starting at $38,475, including a $695 destination charge, when it hits showrooms in March.

2007 Jeep Grand CherokeeThe company also has announced that it will roll out a new diesel pickup after 2009.

The timing of the two announcements was part of a big diesel push on Tuesday by DaimlerChrysler. In a speech at the Washington auto show, DaimlerChrysler Chairman Dieter Zetsche urged Americans to "rethink diesel" as a way to lessen dependence on foreign oil and improve fuel economy.

The automaker will debut a new turbodiesel engine in its Dodge light-duty pickups after 2009. The new Cummins "clean diesel" for the Dodge Ram 1500 will provide up to 30 percent better fuel economy and a 20 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared with a conventional gas engine.

The automaker also noted that the new 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD provides up to 30 percent improvement in fuel economy and a 20 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. The Grand Cherokee CRD will range in price from $38,475 for the base Limited 4x2 model to $45,395, including shipping, for the top-of-the-line Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4.

In comparison, a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x2 with a 4.7-liter V8 starts at $35,425, including a $695 destination charge. A 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x2 with a 3.7-liter V6 starts at $28,360, including destination.

The new 3.0-liter V6 CRD, built by Mercedes-Benz, produces 215 horsepower at 3,800 rpm and 376 pound-feet of torque at 1,600 rpm. It gets an estimated fuel economy of 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway for 4x2 models, and 20 mpg city/24 mpg highway for 4x4 models.

The 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD has a towing capacity of 7,400 pounds and a driving range of about 450 miles.

VW Reveals 2008 Jetta Bluetec Diesel

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Volkswagen of America unveiled the next step in the company's U.S. diesel strategy at the Washington, D.C. auto show, showing a Jetta TDI that employs an all-new 2.0-liter, common-rail diesel engine that will meet emissions requirements in all 50 states when it rolls out next year.

concept car vw jettaWhile the Jetta carries the Bluetec badge, referring to VW and Audi's alliance with DaimlerChrysler on diesel emissions technology, the car will not require the AdBlue liquid urea additive to comply with federal standards.

That is because the engine is smaller than the 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine that the company will install in the Touareg SUV in 2008, which will employ AdBlue, according to Norbert Krause, director of VOA's engineering and environmental office.

Instead, Bluetec refers only to the vehicle's ability to meet federal Tier II bin 5 emissions standards. That means the car will not only be available in states that are governed by national standards, but also in the five states that follow California emissions rules. The four Northeastern states and California that have separate, tighter requirements, account for 40 percent of VW's U.S. sales, Krause said.

The new engine abandons VW's old mechanical fuel injection system in favor of a common-rail system using piezoelectric fuel injectors. This technology permits higher injection pressures, which better atomize the fuel and makes it easier to control pollution, he said.

Diesel engines struggle particularly with oxides of nitrogen (NOx) pollution, and the Tier II bin 5 standard permits only 0.05 grams per mile. Volkswagen will use a NOx trap and two oxidation catalysts to scrub the Jetta TDI's breath.

The new engine is smoother, quieter, more powerful and more efficient than the old Jetta TDI, which won many friends, but it won't cost more. Fuel economy should be better, in the 45 mpg range, while the engine produces 140 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque, according to Krause.

Jetta TDI production will commence in January of 2008, with U.S. availability scheduled for May of '08, at a starting price of about $23,000 and a typically equipped car listing for $25,000, which is in line with the outgoing model, according to spokesman Keith Price.

Lamborghini Spyder Makes Tracks With IMSA Tuning Kit

BRUGGEN, Germany — IMSA is a resonant name for American racing fans, but in this case it refers to a German tuning firm with no relation to the race series.

Lamborghini Gallardo SpyderThe company has just introduced a tuning package for the open-top Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, to match the package already available for the Gallardo.

The company, run by Holger Mohr, first introduced its Gallardo GTV package a year ago. Wider tracks, new alloy wheels, bigger brake discs and an exclusive interior with a mix of leather, aluminum and carbon-fiber trim were the highlights of the pack. And there was passing reference to a power hike to 600 horsepower.

The new treatment on the Gallardo Spyder is the same: an even wider body, huge 245/30ZR20 tires at the front and 325/25ZR20 tires at the back, front and rear aprons and spoilers, plus the same comfortable and striking interior. The engine makes 610 hp and is capable of 483 pound-feet of torque. Both the four-wheel-drive system and the suspension have been adjusted to cope with the increased power.

Skoda Octavia Scout

Just as the anti-4x4 lobby reaches fever pitch and doesn't even want owners to park their cars, along comes Skoda with an eminently sensible alternative to those big and nasty SUVs.

Skoda Octavia ScoutThe Octavia Scout is based on the existing 4x4 model but features a mildly raised ride height to give 17mm more ground clearance, while aluminium undertrays protect the front and rear.

There are also some chunky plastic mouldings, 17in alloy wheels, and ESP with Hill Hold Control to stop you careering backwards into the scenery on slippery slopes when attempting hill starts.

Engines on offer in the Scout are the 150bhp 2.0-litre petrol and 140bhp 2.0 turbodiesel, as used in other Octavia models.

Prices start at £17,585 for the petrol and £19,940 for the diesel, so the Scout's prices are just as sensible as its 4x4 approach. Just don't tell Ken Livingstone or Richmond council when sales begin in March.

2007 Ferrari F2007

(from Ferrari Press Release) Maranello, 14th January 2007 - The F2007 is the fifty third single-seater built by Ferrari specifically to compete in the Formula 1 World Championship.

2007 Ferrari F2007 32007 Ferrari F2007 22007 Ferrari F2007 4The project, known internally as the 658, represents the Scuderia's interpretation of the technical regulations that apply for 2007, with changes principally concerning safety, through the introduction of more stringent front and rear crash tests and the addition of a composite material structure to provide lateral protection to the sides of the driver. These modifications have led to a significant increase in the weight of the car, in the region of just under ten kilogrammes.

The F2007 chassis has been significantly modified when compared to the 248 F1. The design was revised to accommodate a new front suspension that represents a major conceptual innovation, mainly in terms of aerodynamics. The shape of the side-pods and their openings are also revised, based on modifications to the cooling system, which also implies exits for the radiators on the upper part of the bodywork, while the engine air intake is also substantially different. The car has a longer wheelbase than its predecessor. The rear of the car is much narrower, taking advantage of the more sculpted shape of the gearbox housing, which again this year is made from carbon fibre. The gearbox itself, which is still mounted longitudinally, is fitted with an innovative quick-shift system (seven plus reverse). The rear suspension is similar to that on the 248 F1, but a significant development programme is planned in this area, in order to get the most out of the system, based on making progress in understanding the behaviour of the 2007 tyres. The front and rear aerodynamic configuration is also expected to change considerably before the start of the World Championship. The position of the rear view mirrors seen on the 2006 car remains unchanged and the same goes for the exhaust system.
In accordance with the regulations that come into force this year, the basic structure of the engine remains the same as the one homologated at the end of last season. Therefore, the 056 engine continues as a load bearing member and is again mounted longitudinally. Based on what is permitted in the regulations, the following modifications have been carried out to the engine signed off with the FIA in October 2006:

- the combustion chamber, the valves, the inlet and exhaust chambers, all aimed at optimising the torque curve, given the engine rev limit of 19,000 rpm;

- the piston, the piston pin and the piston cooling jets to aim for the best possible reliability when running at the limit of 19,000 rpm;

- the fluid systems (water and oil) and components to facilitate the integration of the 056 into the new car.

As usual, during the design and development phase of the complete car, the technical partners played an important role. A significant part was played by Shell in terms of fuel and lubricants, by the Fiat Research Centre in the use of simulation systems and by Brembo in developing the braking system. As is now traditional, a great deal of attention was paid to the performance and optimisation of the materials used, to the design stage and to quality control, striving to maximise the performance level and to ensure the highest possible standard of safety.

Aldo Costa, Head of the Chassis Department of the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, and Gilles Simon, Head of the Engine Department, started a series of meetings with the press on the day of the preview of the new F2007.

Aldo Costa: "The methodology of the project and the development of the car has been under the sign of continuity. Last year we adopted an aggressive approach and this year we will work with the same rhythm in development as in 2006. This was our aim and we hit our target.

The aerodynamics have been completely remodelled; above all the front suspension, the air inlets on the main body and the rear axle are tighter and more tapered, to benefit also from the new architecture of the gear box. We worked a lot on the chassis considering the new crash tests, which are much more severe. With satisfaction we can say that we have reached excellent results in terms of safety. The suspension has been revised also under the aspect of new tyres, while the gear box has a new quick shift system, which will avert time loss during gear-changes. This system lowers the time of gear change, works for all gears and in every condition. We have also modified the disposition and the inclination of the radiator. As far as the rear suspension is concerned, it is continuing to evolve.

At the chassis department there are around 200 people working: an exceptional and enthusiastic group. They work with determination and respect; without a doubt producing great team work. Obviously I can't name everybody, but I have to mention Nikolas Tombazis, our Chief Designer; Tiziano Battistini, Head of the Technical Department, John Iley, Head of Aerodynamics, supported by Marco De Luca; Marco Fainello, Head of the Car Performance Division; Simone Resta, Head of the R&D Department and last but not least Davide Terletti, responsible for the crash tests.

Today's car is the one that will debut and has the same wings as the one in 2006. The car, which will go to start at the first GP, will have optimized wings, while this is just a provisional version. The F2007 is however definitive in its structure.

In constructing and developing this race car the FIAT research centre is of very high importance, as it gives us a huge amount of support. We have worked a lot with the simulator they developed over the last couple of years and we will continue on that road."

Gilles Simon: "As according to the rules the engine 056 has remained the same. But we were able to adapt it to the rev limits of 19,000 rpm. We have revised the combustion chamber, the valves, the crank shaft and the piston, to optimize the available output before arriving at the rpm limit. Further we have worked on the integration of the engine into the car: the water and oil inlets have been revised, as has the positioning of some accessories, to adjust to the very compact rear axle of the 658.

We have collaborated strongly with Shell, and we are continuing to work on the fuel development. As far as the fuels are concerned we have been continuously progressing. The lubricants have been helping us for a long time in terms of reliability, while from March onwards we also want to work on bettering the performance.

On the 1st March we will hand over a sealed engine, to which we can't do anything else. We will then try to work on the accessories, the air inlet and, as I just mentioned, the fuel and the lubricants."

Ectomobile? Smart Fortwo in Glowing Green

That might be the reaction as Smart prepares to launch an eerily Ghostbusters glow-in-the-dark version of its current Fortwo city car. The new Smart Fortwo is poised for a launch in April.

glowing smart fortwoThe ghostly Fortwo is the result of an artist's vision. Smart turned over one of the cars to photo artist Katharina Sieverding and her students, who gave the car a luminescent green paint job to turn the little car into "an experimental light source."

The glow-in-the-dark Smart reflects its environment: Buildings and other parts of the landscape are reflected in the body panels. The car will go on exhibit March 8-11 at the Galerie Viaux in Berlin. No word on whether it will go up for sale, but Smart says pictures of the car will be sold, with the proceeds going to charity.

Smart says the little green goblin is the next-to-last Smart Fortwo from the current generation. The final vehicle to be produced will go to the Mercedes-Benz museum collection. Production of the new Smart Fortwo is already underway.

BMW 2002 tii Reconstructed

(from BMW Press Release) Munich. The BMW 02 models are cult cars that uniquely embody the spirit of the 1960s and '70s.
The aim was to revive this exciting era by reconstructing the 2002 tii model out of individual components. Motoring nostalgics can experience the legendary "young classic" close up from 06 - 09 April at the world's biggest historic vehicle show, Techno Classica in Essen.

BMW 2002 tii ReconstructedBMW 2002 tii Reconstructed 2BMW 2002 tii Reconstructed 3BMW 2002 tii Reconstructed 4

Old into new

The idea was hatched last year. The plan was to bring the BMW 2002 tii back to life using available spare parts, on the basis that Mobile Tradition - the BMW Group's heritage division - is today still able to provide some 90 per cent of all components for the BMW 02. It seemed a logical step, then, to reconstruct this ever-youthful recent classic. Master mechanic Arthur Herrmann and Klaus Kutscher, head of the BMW Mobile Tradition workshop, set to work on an original bodyshell from the 1970s. In a "Glass Workshop" specially constructed for the purpose on the site of the BMW Museum Exhibition next to the Olympic Tower, the car was gradually put together piece by piece - to the delight of thousands of visitors monitoring its progress live since May 2005. Eleven months and some 4,000 spare parts later the new BMW 2002 tii, model year 2006, goes on display at Essen's Techno Classica, the world's largest specialist fair for classic models.

The crazy seventies

Inka, a glowing shade of orange, is one of the typical colours favoured during the "crazy seventies". In keeping with that era, the new BMW 2002 tii shines brightly in this flower-power hue guaranteed to get the pulses of car aficionados racing.

The heartbeat of the newly revived dream car is provided by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 130 bhp, as in the original model built back in 1973. That's enough power to take the 1,030-kilogram car from standstill to 100 km/h in 9.4 seconds. Even the top speed of 190 km/h reached 30 years ago on roads dominated by the VW Beetle was a creditable figure - and still makes for a superlative driving experience today. Sipping an average 9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, this four-wheeled gem came with a price tag of DM 14,400 attached.

Oldster made up of new parts appears at Techno Classica

From 6 April 2006, interested car fans have the opportunity to take a closer look at this old model made up of new parts. Once again BMW Group Mobile Tradition will be welcoming visitors in Hall 12 of the Techno Classica automotive show, where the 2002 tii will be on display - not behind glass this time.
The successful project has spawned more of the same, ensuring that the Glass Workshop does not remain empty. Visitors to the BMW Museum Exhibition at the Olympic Tower will be able to observe another "new-but-old cult car" taking shape on the hydraulic platform - this time it's a BMW 528 (E12).

New Citroen C4 WRC Car

Gymnast-turned-fastest driver in the world Sébastien Loeb returned to winning ways yesterday with victory on the Monte Carlo Rally.

It was an incredible victory in many ways: a win first time out for the new Citroen C4 WRC car, the fourth triumph for Loeb on the Monte (joining legends Sandro Munari, Walter Rohrl and Tommi Makinen on the four-time winner's list), and let's not forget that Loeb's broken arm is not yet fully healed.

New Citroen C4 WRC CarNew Citroen C4 WRC Car 2Thirty-eight seconds back from the Frenchman was Loeb's teammate Dani Sordo, handing Citroen a one-two in the C4's debut.

Marcus Gronholm in the Ford Focus WRC joined the Citroen pair on the podium with a third-place finish.

Aussie Chris Atkinson had a strong run to fourth position in the Subaru, beating 2003 WRC champ and teammate Petter Solberg.

Gareth MacHale deserves a big-up too. Eleventh place in a four-year-old Ford Focus WRC is an extremely good result for the talented Irishman. He even beat Matthew Wilson in the 2006-spec Focus WRC...

The 2007 Monte Carlo Rally was a strange affair in many ways. The rally HQ was based in Valence, some 250 miles north of Monaco, and the weather throughout the event was unseasonably warm.

Oh, and the number of stages held in Monaco? One.

Loeb's looking dominant already. Boring for the 2007 WRC? Nah. Get yourself to an event and watch first-hand arguably the finest rally driver that's ever lived.

New Cars Result From Nissan and Suzuki Cooperation

TOKYO — Japan's auto market saw the debuts of two new models this week: the Suzuki Landy minivan and the Nissan Pino minicar.

Suzuki LandyNissan PinoThe twist: Suzuki makes the Pino, and Nissan makes the Landy.

This is the visible fruit of ongoing cooperation between Nissan and Suzuki that has included sharing capacity at plants and joint new-model development. Suzuki, which is the leading minicar producer in Japan, has been supplying a rebranded version of its MR Wagon to Nissan for many years, but this is the highest-profile cooperative venture to date.

The Nissan Pino is actually a rebadged — but otherwise identical — version of Suzuki's current Alto. Of the three minicars Nissan is now selling in Japan, two — including the Pino — are sourced from Suzuki and the third is from Mitsubishi.

Taking the inter-corporate cooperation idea a step further, Nissan has hooked up with Sony on a Web site where Pino owners can shop for accessories and gadgets.

In turn, Nissan supplies its Serena van to Suzuki to sell as the Landy. With its eight-seater interior and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, the Landy is bigger than any previous minivan from the small-vehicle-oriented Suzuki. In fact, the company uses the Landy name in China for a much smaller van.

1956 Continental Mark II Convertible

(from owner Barry Wolk) This is the first of two known Ford authorized Mark II convertibles.

The Mark II was originally conceived as a convertible as early as 1953 as drawn by Charley Phaneuf. These drawings would inspire some later artful modifications to my car.

1956 Continental Mark II Convertible1956 Continental Mark II Convertible 21956 Continental Mark II Convertible 31956 Continental Mark II Convertible 41956 Continental Mark II Convertible 5Hess & Eisenhardt, of Kennedy limousine fame, had a long history with Ford Motor Company. The Chicago District of Ford Marketing ordered two prototype convertibles from them in September of 1955. This car was designated as an "Introductory Unit" on its Production Order. It was shipped to a distributor in Chicago where it was supposed to reside in a dealership showroom as a demonstrator, not to be sold until Continental filled the supply pipeline. These were very early production cars and were owned by Ford so that the dealership didn№t have to carry the burden of a $10,000 car they couldn№t sell. The serial number of this car is C5681126 and its Production Order number is 137.

This Mark II convertible was originally built as a dealer demonstrator to show wealthy clients in the Chicago area what a convertible would look and drive like. Ford Marketing in the Chicago District ordered two convertibles. Hess & Eisenhardt took a stock black 1956 Continental Mark II and took the
body off the frame after welding in temporary supports that would compensate for removing the roof. This black car was C5681126.

The frame was flipped over and 1/4" plate steel was artfully cut and stitch-welded to the serpentine "cowbelly" frame. There are tubular cross-braces welded in an "X" to further support the "A" and "B" pillars. The floor pan was neatly hammered to clear the tubular supports below. A substantial sub-structure was built to support the convertible top. This structure is independent of the body, transferring the weight and stress of the convertible top to the frame. The stock Continental іcowbellyІ frame was designed with a convertible body in mind. A third cross-member was removed
for the 1957 frame since plans for a production convertible had been scrapped.

The body was fitted back to the frame and the roof was removed. Hess & Eisenhardt fabricated a power top mechanism that was driven by a power pack in the trunk. The top fittings on my car are period-correct Mercedes bits and pieces commonly used in H & E convertibles. The end product was very similar to the Derham made convertible produced almost a year later for the Texas State Fair in October of 1956. That car was originally white while on the show car circuit. When Ford was finished with that car it came back and was repainted by Ford Styling. It was eventually painted Honolulu Blue, a favorite color of William Clay Ford and was driven by his wife as a daily driver. Paul Wagner, whose job it became to dispose of cars like this, fought for the car with other Ford executives. He kept the car for a few years but eventually sold it to the Goeppinger family of Boone, Iowa.

My car changed hands several times and ended up in the possession of a real estate developer in Georgia. He took pictures of the car with the original H & E top when he got it. He envisioned a sleeker design to the fabric boot that covered the convertible top when stowed. Possibly he was inspired by the Charley Phaneuf drawings. He was inspired by the SL Mercedes of the late 1960s and fashioned a crude mechanism that flipped the new metal boot backward, just like the Mercedes. Through the magic of lead a beautiful finish was put on the exposed surfaces making the finished product a sleek statement of quiet elegance.

The top was extended rearward and a fastening system identical to the period SL was installed. This changed the roofline to closely match that of the original Continental convertible. The finishing touch was added in the restoration that took place in №93. The beautiful fiberglass bow covers replaced the fabric snap on covers installed in Њ69. This Mark II convertible most closely duplicates the original design penned in 1953.

RoadRazer

The last thing we want to do in the morning while still bleary-eyed is drag a razor across our stubbly visages, but here's one razor we would leap from our slumber to get our hands on.

The RoadRazer is a single-minded new sports car from the Low Countries.

RoadRazerRoadRazer 2RoadRazer 3Making extensive use of carbon fibre for the body and chassis, the RoadRazer tips the scales at just 300kg.

That makes it all the more effective at using the 180bhp generated by the Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle engine. The makers claim 0-60mph in three seconds and a top speed of 150mph.

The driver sits in the centre, F1-style, with the passenger placed behind as in a jet fighter.

RoadRazer's builder Mikkel Steen Pedersen says the car will be finished and on sale by the end of this year, with prices starting at around £35,000 for a fully road legal car in the UK.

He can also supply a kit of parts for the owner to complete at home for around £20,000

DIXI 3/15

DIXI (latin for "I have spoken") was involved in the manufacturer of small cars from the period of 1904 through the late 20s. In 1928, the parent company of DIXI, Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach A.G., was purchased by BMW, which used the DIXI as a springboard to begin the production of automobiles. Prior to this, the company had been involved in the manufacture of airplane engines, railway brakes, motorcycle engines (1919), and ultimately their own motorcycle in 1923.

DIXI 3/15DIXI 3/15 2The DIXI name faded from view shortly after the BMW takeover.

(from BMW Press Release) The Dixi 3/15 PS was a licensed version of the successful British Austin Seven small car and, following the takeover of the Eisenach car factory, became BMW's very first four-wheeled model. It went into serial production in December 1927.

Snake charmer

In the world of AC Cobras, there's no such thing as a cheap car. But when it comes to the world's only surviving Supersnake version, which just happens to belong to the car's creator, then the price is likely to be something special.

Try $5 million (£2.5m). That's how much this car realised at auction when it went under the hammer in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Owned and designed by Carroll Shelby, the Supersnake was built in 1966 and distinguished itself from mere standard Cobra 427s by adding a pair of superchargers to create 800bhp.

Shelby said of his ultimate creation: "I wanted it to be the meanest, fastest car on the road. Forty years later, it will still kick the tail of just about anything in the world."

One other Supersnake was built for American comedian Bill Cosby, but this car was destroyed in an accident.

2007 Alfa Romeo Spider

(from Alfa Romeo Press Release) The Spider or convertible has an important place in Alfa Romeo tradition (starting with the Giulietta Spider in the 1950s and going on to the Duetto and the Spider launched in the 1990s), because it has always embodied the ‘free emotive’ expression of the car.

2007 Alfa Romeo Spider2007 Alfa Romeo Spider 22007 Alfa Romeo Spider 32007 Alfa Romeo Spider 42007 Alfa Romeo Spider 5And the new model reiterates the same theme, a natural evolution of the convertibles created by Alfa Romeo in its long history, cars that have always produced strong emotions, guaranteeing extremely entertaining driving and combining superb styling with the performance of powerful, elastic engines. And the new Alfa Spider is no exception: it has the same ‘essentially simple’ character of a true sports car, combined with the technological superiority of the ‘new Alfa breed.

Developed by Pininfarina in conjunction with the Alfa Romeo style centre, the model turns heads for its unmistakable Italian elegance, an absolutely unique and unrepeatable style that promises the satisfaction of a sporty drive with full respect for Brand traditions. While maintaining a front end compatible with the latest generation of Alfa Romeos, the new car is nevertheless the latest stylistic development of the Alfa Romeo convertibles that have written the history of world motoring. Take for example the car’s penetrating lines that invite the eye to run over the entire length of the clean-cut perimeter. The side is made more dynamic by the concave surface that runs across it. Brawny wheelarches express the car's sporty vocation while maintaining its stylistic elegance and lightness. The rear is also made lighter by fins and the round plan view of the boot and bumpers.

Inside, the Alfa Spider offers a welcoming and highly sophisticated environment due to the use of top-quality materials and the adoption of opulent features (standard on some versions). From dual-zone automatic climate control to steering-wheel-mounted radio controls, VDC and Cruise control, a map navigator with bird-view function and the Blue&Me system.

The car is offered in a choice of two outfits, and the customer can also choose between two JTS petrol engines (2.2 delivering 185 bhp and 3.2 V6 Q4 delivering 260 bhp), combined with a sporty, mechanical, 6-speed gearbox. The new car guarantees the temperament of an Alfa and excellent dynamic performance thanks to high double wishbone suspension at the front and a Multilink system at the rear. The Alfa Spider combines superb comfort with a sporty trim and an evolved ‘Alfa Romeo Q4’ four-wheel drive system (on the 260 bhp 3.2 V6 Q4 version). And in the safety field, the new Alfa Romeo is fitted with the most sophisticated electronic devices to control the car’s dynamic behaviour: from braking to traction.

These are the winning features that allowed the new model to run off with the ‘Cabrio of the Year 2006’ prize at its first outing (at the recent Geneva Motor Show). This prestigious title was awarded by a Cabriolet Committee made up of 23 motoring journalists from 12 different countries.
With its safety, power and attractive styling, the Alfa Spider marks step forward in the convertible field, a specific segment where Alfa Romeo has always played a leading role. The new vehicle has been designed for quality without compromise. This concept has been pursued throughout all stages of the car’s development process, from product design and including the innumerable tests that the car underwent before production.
The Alfa Spider’s quality is also expressed in the choice of opulent interior materials; in the tuning of its Alfa Romeo engines to achieve top-level performance, engine note and driving comfort – and in the optimisation of the sophisticated suspension systems. The term ‘quality’ also describes a world of financial services and products to meet all needs.

New Mercedes C-Class

It's taken a 14 million-mile detour to get here, but the new Mercedes C-Class has finally arrived.

This is the car that Mercedes hopes will reassert its status as builder of the sturdiest damn exec saloons in the world, and the car that everyone else hopes might just put the 'fun' back into 'trust-fund manager company car'.

That's why it's done 14 million miles. A generation of shoddily built models dented Mercedes previously bulletproof reputation, so the C-Class developers put the new car through a gruelling real-world testing programme.

Some 280 prototypes covered more than 14 million test miles across the world. (Bah. The Stig does 14 million miles before breakfast. On his bike.)

But obviously the Benz engineers aren't taking any chances with their 3-Series rival. Not really surprising, because the success or failure of the C-Class may well define Mercedes' future. The last generation of C-Class was Merc's biggest seller worldwide, shifting more than two million units in its seven-year lifespan.

A massive chunk of these cars were snapped up by company car drivers, and although Merc is doing its damndest to woo a younger generation to the C-Class, without a core of fleet buyers, the three-point star could find itself on a rather rapid burnout.

This explains why the new C-Class represents an evolution of the previous model rather than a radical overhaul.

It's more taut and compact-looking, with definite nods to the styling of the latest S-Class. A sharp, rising crease along the doorline highlights a more angular, wedged profile, and the front end - especially the headlights - has been straightened too. Gone are the goggle-eyed orbs of the previous model, replaced with sharper, squarer clusters that taper towards the bottom of the grill.

Interesting thing, that grill. If you look closely at our ever-so-sexy photos, you'll see the C-Class has two very distinct front ends. The more aggressive grill, with the whopping three-point star slapped bang in the middle, belongs to the Sport range.

Mercedes says that the hulking badge emphasises the driving dynamics and aggressive intent of the Sport line. A touch hopeful, perhaps, but it's definitely the looker of the two.

The more sedate nose with the classic bonnet-top badge appears on the SE and Elegance models. The SE line is replacing the Classic range as Mercedes big fleet shifter, so expect to see that front end peering at you from the car park of every edge-of-town business hotel within the next year.

And it's a safe bet that under the bonnet of that ubiquitous middle-manager-mobile you'll find the 1.8-litre petrol engine, a reworked version of the block found in the current C318. Mercedes engineers have massaged another 13bhp from the four-cylinder petrol engine, boosting overall power to 156bhp.

There are similar power upgrades for the three diesel options and the other four petrol engines, including the range-topping 3.5-litre V6. Range-topping, that is, until an AMG version arrives sometime early next year. No word on the details yet, but we reckon they could squeeze the C63 under that hood. Please?

Under the surface it's the usual story of Mercedes technological wizardry and acronym-love. We could go into detail, but suffice to say that in the event of a crash, you'll be ensconced in more letters than Anne Robinson's postman.

It's the same story inside the cabin. The interior reeks of Teutonic functionality, right down to the fold-down information screen and that oddly wonky steering wheel.

The new C-Class reaches the UK in June, and although there's no firm word on prices, the big bods at Mercedes reckon it won't be any more expensive than its predecessor - adjusting for inflation, that is.

G6 GXP

The new, 2008 G6 GXP performance coupe and sedan bring a new, performance-oriented dimension to the G6’s broad lineup. They will be available with both base and Street edition packages.

G6 GXP Street edition models are easily identified by their new front fascia, which features new fog lamps and braided polished stainless steel upper and outboard lower grille inserts with chrome surrounds on the upper grille sections leading to a revised hood with scoops. New body side rocker moldings lead to a redesigned rear fascia with two exhaust openings. Chrome, dual-wall tips exit through the openings. A rear spoiler also is part of the GXP package, but is specific to either the coupe or sedan; the coupe model receives a larger, more aggressive “hammerhead” spoiler. GXP-specific 18-inch wheels are also standard in the Street edition package.

All G6 GXP models are powered by GM Powertrain’s 3.6L V-6 with variable valve timing. It is rated at 252 horsepower (188 kW) at 6300 rpm and 251 lb.-ft. of torque (341 Nm) at 3200 rpm. The engine is a state-of-the-art, DOHC powerplant that uses full four-cam phasing, rapid date processing and torque-based engine management to optimize power, economy and emissions performance.

The 3.6-liter V-6 VVT engine is mated to a new Hydra-Matic 6T70 electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission. It is an advanced transmission with state-of-the-art clutch-to-clutch shift operation, designed for high-performance front-wheel drive applications. Clutch-to-clutch operation allows for reduced complexity and compact packaging. The six-speed automatic improves vehicle performance up to 8 percent and increases fuel economy up to 4 percent over current front-wheel-drive four-speed automatics.

G6 GXP models have sporty, driver-oriented interiors with refined controls and instrument layouts. Standard features include highly bolstered, body-hugging seats, tilt/telescopic steering wheel, racing-style gauges with true-red LED instrument backlighting, automatic climate control, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, AM/FM/CD player, variable intermittent wipers, tachometer and theft-deterrent system. Available items include power adjustable pedals, six-way power seats, heated seats, leather seating surfaces, in-dash six-CD changers and remote vehicle start. GXP-specific leather-appointed seating with two-tone inserts is available.

On the road, the G6 GXP coupe and sedan deliver the type of responsive ride and handling characteristics expected from Pontiac's performance series. They are equipped with GXP-specific sport-tuned suspensions, as well as GM’s StabiliTrak electronic stability control system as standard equipment.

The front suspension uses a MacPherson strut design, with aluminum lower control arms and a direct-acting stabilizer bar. Suspension components mount to a U-shaped hydroformed chassis cradle. Rubber mounts isolate the body from the chassis cradle to minimize noise, vibration and harshness. At the rear, a four-link independent suspension design uses twin-tube shock absorbers and another direct acting stabilizer bar, all intended to minimize body roll during cornering. High-performance braking is an integral part of the G6’s sporty nature. Large, heavy-duty four-wheel disc brakes provide excellent stopping power and great fade resistance. Front discs are vented and the rears are solid. Four-channel ABS is standard.

Base G6 GXP models receive standard 18-inch aluminum alloy painted flangeless five-spoke wheels, while those opting for the Street edition will receive a unique 18-inch wheel. Black chrome-finished 18-inch aluminum wheels are also available.

Peugeot 207 Turbo and 107 XS

Peugeot is getting on with what it does best by building sporty little hatches, and it's just announced not one but two of the critters.

Hot on the heels of the 150bhp 207 Turbo, the 207 Sport uses a 120bhp version of the same 1.6-litre engine.

Peugeot 207 TurboIt's a clever engine with variable valve timing, but the important stuff is that it does 0-62mph in 10.7 seconds and has a top speed of 125mph.

Those are not the most scintillating warm hatch figures and the new automatic gearbox takes the edge off further.
This Tiptronic auto 'box means 0-62mph in 12.7 seconds and a 122mph top speed.
Prices for the auto start at ££12,795, while the manual gearbox model costs £11,795.

The second new sporty hatch for Peugeot is the 107 XS, reviving a badge that has previously been attached to the fine handling 106 and 205 XS models.

Peugeot 107 XS
The obvious differences between a standard 107 and the XS are the bold stripes down the centre of the car and the door mirrors painted in contrasting colours.

There's also a sports twin exhaust, revised front and rear bumpers, and 14-inch alloy wheels.

No extra power for the 68bhp 1.0-litre engine, but with extra grip the 107 XS should be good fun to drive.

The price for the 107 XS is £8,345 and it's on sale now.

2008 Pontiac G6 GXP.R

(from General Motors Press Release) Pontiac unveiled the GXP.R racecar, which will compete in the GT class of the 2007 Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve. The GXP.R hits the track running later this month at the famed Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona race in Florida.

2008 Pontiac G6 GXP.R2008 Pontiac G6 GXP.R 2With the bodywork inspired by the Pontiac G6 GXP Street edition coupe, the GXP.R is the next step in the evolution of a successful racing program that began with the purpose-built GTO.R. The GTO.R was retired after winning the 2006 GT championship; the new GXP.R is built on the same winning foundation as the GTO.R.

“The GXP.R begins the next chapter in a very successful racing campaign that has put Pontiac over Porsche and BMW in the highly competitive GT class,” said John Larson, Pontiac general manager. “The GXP.R promises to pick up the GTO.R’s momentum and carry it into another winning season.”

Built to the specifications of the Grand American GT class, the GXP.R features a rear-drive layout and a racing version of the LS2 V-8 engine that produces approximately 450 horsepower (335 kW). It is based on the same Gen IV V-8 engine design as found in the production Grand Prix GXP. The production G6 GXP is powered by a sophisticated, DOHC 3.6L V-6 with variable valve timing that produces approximately 252 horsepower (188 kW).

The GXP.R’s bodywork retains the silhouette of a production G6 GXP, but lightweight, carbon-fiber replica panels are used throughout to reduce overall mass. The stock window glass also is replaced with lighter, shatter-resistant polycarbonate pieces. The body panels are attached to a custom tube-frame chassis, with the front and rear fenders flared to cover the wide, 18-inch wheels and class-spec Hoosier racing tires. Also, a huge rear wing that provides stabilizing downforce is tied into the chassis. It’s not a production-model wing, but the G6 GXP street car has its own distinctive rear spoiler.

Production-based racing

The Grand American GT class is comprised of production-based coupes and sedans that are modified for racing. Many of the engine components must be the same as those found on production models. The tube-frame chassis and ground-hugging bodywork are used to ensure high-speed traction and stability, while a purposeful interior deletes amenities such as air conditioning and an MP3-capable radio for a crisscross of safety roll cage tubing, a single racing seat, racing instruments and other race-only accoutrements.

Grand American Racing’s racing series, which also includes the Daytona Prototype class, was founded in 1999 with the goal of reinvigorating American road racing. Pontiac models were campaigned in the GT class from its inception, and the GTO.R program was launched in 2005. In their first full season of competition, two GTO.R teams dominated the 2006 season. With eight wins, including a podium sweep at Phoenix , Pontiac clinched its first GT Manufacturers championship, and the No. 65 TRG/F1 Air GTO.R of Andy Lally and Marc Bunting took the GT Drivers and Team championship. The No. 64 TRG GTO.R of Paul Edward and Kelly Collins finished third in points. The remainder of the class’s top 10 finishers included five Porsche GT3 Cups, a BMW M3 and a Chevy Corvette. During the 2005 and 2006 seasons, the GTO.R amassed an impressive 19 consecutive podium finishes – a class record.

2005 Kia KCV4 Mojave Concept

(from Kia Press Release) Kia Unveils Concept Pick-up Truck at Chicago International Auto Show

2005 Kia KCV4 Mojave Concept2005 Kia KCV4 Mojave Concept 22005 Kia KCV4 Mojave Concept 32005 Kia KCV4 Mojave Concept 4IRVINE, Calif., February 5, 2004 – Kia Motors Corporation (KMC) has rapidly expanded its product line-up in North America into several new segments, including the midsize SUV, large sedan and minivan categories, but today at the Chicago International Auto Show, the fastest-growing Korean car company held a world premier for something entirely different -- a concept mid-size pick-up truck dubbed the KCV4Mojave

The Mojave was designed at the Kia/Hyundai Research & Design Center in NamYang, South Korea, under the direction of Lee Jae-Rim, Designer and Senior Research Engineer on the Advanced Design Team at Nam Yang.

MAXIMIZING THE INTERIOR SPACE

Sized between American compact and full-size trucks, the Mojave features a sporty two-plus-two cabin with front-facing rear seats. All seating positions are easily accessible via four center-opening doors. The absence of a B-pillar enhances ingress and egress, creating a large entryway into the vehicle.

Using aircraft design as their inspiration, Mojave’s design team created an interior space that is focused around the truck’s instrumentation, including a center stack with oversized graphics for quick visual reference to instruments and running conditions, as well as controls for entertainment features such as onboard navigation and trip computers that can accommodate an add-on DVD video system.

Continuing the aircraft theme, the Mojave’s cabin features very little wasted space, with enough storage for even the most active of lifestyles. The Mojave features a removable center console storage box that can be used to haul CDs or even cold drinks to the beach, and a built-in storage bin underneath the rear seat offers waterproof , concealed storage once the adventure is over. Even the rear doors feature angled, fold-out storage bins for the use of rear-seat passengers.

Combining its advanced interior look with first class materials, all four seats are upholstered in bleached tan leather, with brushed metal accents highlighting the instrument panel and door trim.

POWERFUL AND PURPOSEFUL

The Mojave was engineered and designed in alignment with Kia’s reputation for offering the highest-value vehicles in each segment where the company competes, as well as fulfilling segment-leading levels of quality and safety in the company’s newest generation of vehicles.

At 130 inches, the Mojave’s wheelbase is considerably longer than the Kia Sorento platform on which it is based. The concept truck boasts a 3.8-liter, DOHC 24-valve V6 putting out an estimated 280 horsepower, coupled with a 5-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission.

The fully-boxed ladder frame with nine cross members provides a rugged foundation for the body-on-frame vehicle, supported by double-wishbone, coil-over-shock front independent suspension, and a five-link rigid rear axle with coil springs and level-control. Front and rear suspensions are augmented by stabilizer bars and gas-pressure shocks.

The Mojave uses power-assisted rack and pinion steering that was engineered to be capable of working with a hydraulically-controlled rear steering system that would provide maximum maneuverability while parking (counter-steer), and additional stability during lane changes or in heavy cross winds on the highway (same-phase steer). When called on to stop, power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, electronic brake force distribution (EBS) and brake assist help the driver come to a smooth, controlled stop. The final piece of the handling equation is an aggressive tire and wheel package that includes 20-inch sport tires on 20-inch machine-finished wheels.

WHY “MOJAVE?”

The KCV IV was named “Mojave” for two reasons. Not only does the name represent the ruggedness and beauty of the spectacular American Southwest, it also represents the geographic location (Mojave Desert, near California City, CA) where Kia and Hyundai R & D are building a 4,300-acre, $50-million proving ground facility where the next generation Kia vehicles for the North American market will prove their mettle before receiving the final approvals for production.

“The Mojave represents a great opportunity for Kia to continue to affirm our commitment to the North American market,” said Peter Butterfield. “We continue to invest heavily in the U.S. and around the world to support the steady expansion of sales and market share for Kia globally, and we hope that by showcasing designs like the Mojave more people will become aware of, and interested in, the Kia brand.”

All Kia models are covered by the company’s comprehensive warranty program, which offers unprecedented consumer protection. Included in the package are a 10-year or 100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, a five-year or 60,000-mile limited basic warranty and a five-year or 100,000-mile anti-perforation warranty. A five-year/unlimited mileage roadside assistance plan is also part of the comprehensive coverage program.

Volvo S80: Slap of luxury

Volvo must have uncovered a cupboard-full of spare parts during its new year clean-out - and they're being put to good use.
Hot on the heels of the V70's makeover, the S80 is the latest model to get a bells 'n' whistles upgrade.

Volvo S80Volvo S80 2The soporific barge is to be made available in 'Executive' guise, which means the BMW 5-Series rival gets all the shiniest bits found during that parts-bin rummage.

The top-of-the-range model gets a smart set of 18-inch alloys, the dreaded walnut inlays, a fresh sound system and a whole bunch of new badges. There's even a fridge in the rear, although there's no word on whether it dispenses chilled water and crushed ice.

Three engine options are available for the S80 Executive. Volvo's tried-and-tested D5 diesel is the most economical in the range: the five-cylinder 2.4-litre lump returns 44mpg and dispatches 0-60mph in eight seconds.

The petrol options are thankfully more lively, with a 3.2-litre V6 and 4.4-litre V8 promising to raise the pulse to almost conscious levels. Available in all-wheel drive, the V8 will reach 60mph in six seconds but return a thirsty 24mpg.

All the engines channel their power to the road through six-speed Geartronic transmission.

Prices for the S80 Executive range from £38,415 to £47,955.

2007 Beck LM 800

(from Beck Press Release) New Beck LM 800: „The new model from Switzerland“ – World premiere in Vienna
Berne Beck Engineering & Composits GmbH from Muri near Berne in Switzerland is presenting
an exciting new product at the luxury motor show in Vienna: On 10 January 2007 the new
Beck LM 800 will be shown to the world’s public for the first time

2007 Beck LM 800 22007 Beck LM 800 42007 Beck LM 800 52007 Beck LM 8002007 Beck LM 800 3The company is a small Swiss manufacturer that has specialised in the production of top class,
super sports cars. The main features here are the lightweight construction and the associated
use of the most varied of low-density materials, such as aluminium, magnesium, titanium, as well as the latest plastic and composite materials – Kevlar for instance. It goes without saying that, according to Swiss tradition, the highest demands in terms of quality apply here as well.

The company gets its name from Renй Beck, who can look back on a history of over 20 years in the construction of prototypes and vehicles. Even when he was a schoolboy, in every free minute he was already fiddling around with home-made sports cars and working on his dream. His motto then is still the same now: „We start at the point where others have already given up.“

Much in the fields of lightweight construction and highly refined aerodynamics has been borrowed from nature, as nature always demonstrates an enormously high level of efficiency in all its „designs“.
Also, some solutions have their origins in Formula 1 when it comes to both technical components
and the construction methods used in the car.

The very low drag coefficient (cw value) resulted from a reduction in the cross-sectional area of the vehicle to an absolute minimum. There is no superfluous material to impede the lines, so that the consistent implementation of „form follows function” has led to a very special appearance with its own highly technically- and performance-orientated, futuristic aesthetic.

The Beck LM 800 is a car that imparts a feeling of pure enjoyment of sport from within, has optimal driving characteristics thanks to its active, electronically controlled chassis and has enormous power reserves at its disposal as a result of its very light weight. In addition, the vehicle is very easy to maintain, thanks to its modular construction and telescopic jacking system.

The basic construction of the car is similar to a Formula 1 racing car with a central monocoque
made of composite materials that protect the driver and provide the necessary rigidity. Fixed to this are the engine and gearbox support, as well as the front transverse control arms of the chassis.

The central monocoque takes all the static load and provides the car with its necessary rigidity.
It is made up from an aluminium frame and the latest composite materials. The same material mix of carbon, Kevlar and aluminium that is used for the monocoque is also used for various bodywork parts. This has the big advantage that the new regulations governing personal protection have already been implemented.

All attachment parts are made of a high-strength aluminium alloy. They are milled out of solid pieces, undergo surface treatment and are then power coated.

The top four layers of the visible parts are made of carbon and the fabric and leather covered components are made of 100% Kevlar. All parts are screwed and/or glued together. The ergonomically shaped seats are produced specially and made of several layers of Kevlar which are then well upholstered. The digital instruments satisfy even the toughest demands.

The car has an electronically controlled, hydraulic active chassis, as normally used in Formula 1 cars, which reacts to all telemetry data. The wheels are also made from specially manufactured aluminium parts, milled out of solid pieces and then coated.

The engine is a V8 with a displacement of 4.2 litres, also equipped with a turbo-charger that has
been specially produced for the Beck LM 800. A semi-sequential, 7-speed gearbox ensures smooth power transmission to the wheels via a limited slip differential, with plenty in reserve at 650 HP.
Gear changing takes place either with a conventional gearstick or using a rocker switch on the steering wheel.

The built-in pneumatic jacking system, making tyre changing child’s play, is very innovative in a car approved for street use, as it is normally used on racing cars.

The price for the basic version of the Beck LM GTR is CHF 750,000. We would be delighted to calculate a price for a special version, taking into consideration the engine size, (550 HP/650 HP/850 HP/1000

BMW 1-Series

How do you make the BMW 1-Series even less practical as a small hatchback?
It's not a question that's had us losing sleep, but it's obviously been bothering BMW's engineering types, who have come up with a solution and done away with the rear doors of the One. Genius.

BMW 1-SeriesBMW 1-Series 2The three-door 1-Series arrives at the same time as some revisions for the entire range.

These updates include a larger BMW 'kidney' grille, reprofiled front and rear bumpers, and a darkened headlamp glass cover.

The three-door model does without window frames for a more coupe-esque appearance when its doors are opened.

To cap it all in the practicality-free stakes, BMW will sell the three-door 1-Series as four-seater, with the no-cost option of choosing a normal rear bench seat.

On a more encouraging note, the 118d model now turns in 60.1mpg combined economy and all models will use BMW's regenerative braking technology to help charge the battery more effectively.

Every model except the 130i will also come with automatic stop-start to save fuel while waiting at the traffic lights.

We'll have to wait until the Geneva motor show in May to see the revised 1-Series range in the metal and the car goes on sale in the UK in March, with prices announced closer to the time.

2007 Kia Kue Concept: more photos

(from Kia Press Release) Kia Unveils Kue Concept at North American International Auto Show.
Crossover Concept Focuses on Sporty Driving and Hints at Future Design Direction for Kia

2007 Kia Kue Concept2007 Kia Kue Concept 22007 Kia Kue Concept 32007 Kia Kue Concept 42007 Kia Kue Concept 5IRVINE, Calif., January 8, 2007 – Kia Motors America (KMA) today during a press conference unveiled the all-new Kia Kue crossover concept vehicle at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The press conference also served as the official public debut in North America for Peter Schreyer, new global design chief of Kia Motors Corporation (KMC).

“We’ve instilled confidence and integrity in our consumer base with vehicles that provide value, quality and safety,” said Len Hunt, executive vice president and COO of KMA. “Kue embodies the next phase of our brand evolution, which will instill pride and passion in our customers through great design.”

The Kia Kue employs a different approach to the crossover utility vehicle segment by taking elements of what makes a CUV to a new level, namely performance. Kue is designed first and foremost as a driver’s vehicle. While possessing SUV characteristics and capabilities, the Kia Kue focuses more on giving the driver an exhilarating driving experience on the way to the home improvement center than on how much it can haul.

The Kia Kue has a monocoque platform that sits on 22-inch tires with a wheelbase of more than 114 inches, packaged in an overall length of 186 inches. Though purely a concept, the Kia Kue does, however, hint at future styling directions for Kia Motors.

“Good design shouldn’t look like you are trying too hard,” said Tom Kearns, KMA chief designer. “The future Kia direction will incorporate the ‘less is more’ philosophy but still include a heavy dose of boldness to be distinct.”

With its four wheels pushed to the corners and exterior skin tautly stretched over its underpinnings, the Kue sits powerful and poised. Draped muscular wheel flares play a nice contrast to crisp beveled sections found elsewhere on the body. Swept back headlights connect to the front grille to create a clean, aggressive down-road appearance. The side window shape flows effortlessly into the rear backlight where two centerline hinging doors open to access rear storage. A single side door that incorporates a negative skive shape opens scissor style for easy ingress and egress.

On the inside Kue continues the clean, athletic theme with bold understated simplicity. With a four-passenger seating arrangement and custom-built bucket seats, Kue is a vehicle both driver and passengers can enjoy. A technology-driven interface designed to adjust to driver and passenger preference is the focus of the interior functionality. Touch pad and motion-sensing controls are used to adjust things like audio and climate, and the entire system is programmable so that one surface may activate the stereo for one driver and temperature for another. Rear passengers have their own, separate interface.

The generation-next functionality of the interior is complemented by the use of sophisticated seat and surface materials and a modern color palette. Carefully selected materials and textures are vital components to the interior design of Kue, and they create an upscale feel that is both modern and inviting. A mid dark interior theme with highlights was chosen in place of the typical light interior common to many concept cars. Overall, the Kue interior presents a new perspective of upscale function with an emphasis on comfortable, user-friendly interaction.

Just as inviting is Kue’s appeal to be driven in a sporty fashion. Fitted with a 400-horsepower, DOHC, supercharged 4.6-liter V8 that twists out 400 lb-ft of torque, Kue is a true performance vehicle. Helping the driver harness all that power is a full-time all wheel drive system yielding predictable driving characteristics both on- and off-road.

Developed by the KMA design team as an expression of Kia’s global design language, the Kia Kue is a true reflection of the Kia brand and the passion it embraces.

Mini small change

Mini has announced that its line-up of new models will soon be completed by the introduction of the entry-level One and Cooper D at the Geneva motor show.

mini coopermini cooper 2A Cooper-badged diesel might sound like something of a contradiction in terms, but Mini's all-new turbodiesel sits resolutely at the 'economical' rather than 'blisteringly quick' end of the hot hatch scale.

The 1.6-litre 110bhp common-rail diesel breaks the 10-second barrier to 60mph - just - but returns an impressive 64.2mpg on the combined cycle.

Maximum torque is a less than terrifying 177lb ft at 1,750rpm, but BMW has fitted the Cooper D with an overboost function. This squeezes another 15lb ft of torque from the engine, putting the Cooper D on a pullin' par with the Cooper S, its petrol brother.

Overboost will be but a pipedream for the Mini One. The 1.4-litre engine - a scaled-down version of the 1.6-litre unit in the current Cooper model - puts out 95bhp and 103lb ft of torque.

Although 11 seconds to 60mph won't challenge much from the lights, the One is at least something of a fuel-sipper, returning 50mpg.

Both the One and Cooper D will be fitted with a six-speed manual 'box as standard. However, you can choose to specify a six-speed flappy paddle job on the One if you like that sort of thing. But you really shouldn't.

Monty's action Avenger

Former F1 superstar turned NASCAR convert Juan-Pablo Montoya has unveiled his new ride.
Looks cool, huh? Check out the flame graphics.

avengerBased loosely on the new Mondeo-sized Dodge Avenger, Monty's new racer is expected to make its competition debut at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 25.

The car will be entered in NASCAR's new Car of Tomorrow category alongside Dodge's existing Charger racer.

The Car of Tomorrow rules are the result of collaboration between NASCAR bigwigs, the manufacturers and teams to produce a less expensive race car.

While the Avenger is being phased into racing (piloted by Monty), the Dodge Charger will continue to race in the NASCAR Nextel Cup.

Meanwhile, as predicted here at TopGear.com, Montoya will be getting some practice on the Daytona oval by racing at this year's Daytona 24-hours in a Lexus-Riley.

It will be Montoya's first sports car race in nearly 11 years. The Colombian is already raving about the car, saying it's much more adjustable than the racers he has driven in the past few years.
A win on his Daytona 24-hour debut looks on the cards...

2005 I2B Concept Project Raven Le Mans Prototype

The first I2B Project is called Raven. In basics, it was designed to be a LeMans prototype for a European super car manufacturer. The conception was classic - two wheel drive with a longitudinal middle engine. The profile of the car was designed especially to has the lowest as possible center of gravity and the lowest air resistance.
To clear the design our first step was to build a clay model of the car in 1:10 scale. Some basic calculation for air resistance were made on Fluent. The first conception did not have enough down force so we decided to put a rear wing which at low speed would lay on the back end of the car.

2007 Aston Martin V8 Vantage N24

Aston Martin has confirmed details of its N24 race car, based on the critically acclaimed V8 Vantage road car, which will be showcased at the Autosport International Show this week.

The Vantage N24 is based on a standard European specification production V8 Vantage, with modifications undertaken to prepare the car for the competitive racing environment.

2007 Aston Martin V8 Vantage N242007 Aston Martin V8 Vantage N24 22007 Aston Martin V8 Vantage N24 32007 Aston Martin V8 Vantage N24 4At the 2006 British Motor Show, Aston Martin Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ulrich Bez, announced that the company would build a limited production run of cars based on the V8 Vantage that completed the Nurburgring 24-hour endurance race that June. The near standard V8 Vantage finished 24th overall out of 220 starters, completing some 130 laps of the 15.77 mile circuit – in a field of mostly specialised race-homologated entrants.

The Nurburgring 24-hour race not only gives its name to the V8 Vantage N24, but provided a conclusive demonstration of its abilities; a near standard car capable of tackling the demands of one of the world's most arduous racing circuits.

The Vantage N24 subsequently went on to finish eighth overall in the inaugural 24-hour race of Bahrain in December 2006, again competing with highly modified race cars. During the course of the race, the Vantage N24 covered over 2600km, needing only fuel, brake pads and tyres.

With the formation of Aston Martin Racing in 2004, the company made a long awaited and successful return to international sports car racing firstly with the GT1 DBR9 in 2005 followed by the GT3 DBRS9 in 2006. However, the company also has a long history of racing near standard cars both at national and at international level. The Vantage N24 builds on this tradition - a factory built car proven and ready to race.

The Vantage N24 will be fastidiously hand built in a dedicated facility within Aston Martin’s Gaydon headquarters. The level of detail and finish conforms to Aston Martin’s exacting standards, fusing hand craftsmanship with advanced technology. The build of the first customer cars will commence in the coming weeks.

The Vantage N24’s engine is modified to enhance throttle response and performance; including the crankshaft, conrods and pistons being lightened and balanced, the cylinder heads re-profiled to optimise compression ratio and gas flow and the engine management system is calibrated for race use.

The N24 also benefits from a free flow exhaust system and improved air filters. The standard V8 dry sump lubrication system is retained helping prevent oil surges during extreme cornering. The result is 410bhp (305KW) at 7500rpm – a 30bhp increase over the standard car.

The N24 is available with a 6-speed manual transmission only. A Valeo twin plate cerametalic racing clutch and lightweight flywheel complete the powertrain specification.

At 1330kg the Vantage N24 weighs in at 250kg lighter than the standard car. The interior trim of the standard car is removed apart from the facia moulding which is re-trimmed in Alcantara. The console and door casings are replaced by new lightweight mouldings. The air-conditioning system is removed as are the airbags. The interior features a full high strength steel roll cage and Recaro Pole Position competition shell (a passenger seat and safety harness is an optional extra). A suede-trimmed steering wheel with a quick release mechanism is also fitted as standard. The Vantage N24’s safety features are completed with a Schroth six-point safety harness with a push button release and Lifeline Zero 360 gas extinguisher system.

The Vantage N24's underframe and body has also been discreetly modified to save weight and increase trackside practicality. Tapping plates have been included to accommodate the use of pneumatic jacks, and motor sport towing eyes are attached to the chassis. The side and rear windows have been replaced with clear polycarbonate, with a sliding opening on the driver's side. The bonnet and tail latches are now quick release items.

The V8 Vantage’s acclaimed suspension has required only minor adjustments to optimise it for track use. These include larger diameter front and rear anti-roll bars and adjustable ride height aluminium dampers, as well as single rate flat ground springs with separate helper springs. The front subframe has been modified for extra camber and castor, while Speedline cast magnesium front and rear wheels are standard, along with high performance Yokohama AO48 tyres.

The brakes have been up-rated with Pagid RS 29 race pads. As further endorsement of the standard V8 Vantage’s abilities, the active safety systems are directly carried over to the Vantage N24 including dynamic stability control, traction control, ABS and electronic brakeforce distribution, providing reassurance and control in slippery conditions.

The Vantage N24 provides an ideal base for a wide variety of Motorsport uses and is ideal for club racing amongst other categories. As supplied it is eligible for series such as the VLN Endurance Championship at the Nurburgring, the Britcar endurance series, the Dutch Supercar Challenge, the Australian GT Championship and the European Endurance Championship. In addition, the Vantage N24 is also potentially eligible for the proposed European GT4 series, the Grand-Am Cup and SCCA Touring Car Class in the USA .

The Vantage N24 is on sale now with prices starting at Ј78,720 plus local taxes and delivery. The customer version of the N24 will make its public debut at the Autosport International Show at the Birmingham NEC from 11th January, as a guest car on tyre partner, Yokohama’s, stand.

2007 Jaguar XKR GT3

(from Apex Motorsport Press Release) JAGUAR XKR GT3 REVEALED IN ALL ITS GLORY

Jaguar’s new XKR Coupe is being revealed to a new audience today (11 January) at the Autosport International Show at the NEC, Birmingham, and in a new guise.
Buckingham-based Apex Motorsport, under the direction of Richard Lloyd, has developed the stunning XKR model for use in the FIA GT3 European Championship. It is being revealed in the ‘flesh’ for the first time to the world’s motorsport media at what is recognised to be globally one of biggest and most successful motorsport shows.

2007 Jaguar XKR GT32007 Jaguar XKR GT3 22007 Jaguar XKR GT3 32007 Jaguar XKR GT3 4 Lloyd and Apex have enjoyed huge racing success in the past, most recently with Bentley with whom they won the 2003 24 Hours of Le Mans. “It was obvious to us that the Jaguar name was missing from the list of GT3 contenders,” said Lloyd. “We believe the new XKR has great potential for success, and Team Manager Dave Ward and the guys have been working flat out since receiving our first car at the end of September. We’ve still got a mountain to climb with roll out and first test scheduled to take place within the next five weeks and, of course, the first race of the season at Silverstone in May. The first car is sold and we have received very positive interest for another two so we’re confident there will be plenty of Jaguars in the FIA paddock and in other emerging GT3 series around the world.”

While Apex has Jaguar’s blessing to compete with the XKR GT3, this is not a factory motorsport programme and the Apex race activities are independent of Jaguar. At the time of the programme’s announcement in September, Stuart Dyble, Jaguar Board Director and Vice President, Communications and Public Affairs, Premier Automotive Group and Ford of Europe, said, “We welcome this initiative which will result in production Jaguar sportscars being seen once again on race circuits across Europe. We have just launched the all new Jaguar XKR road car, and GT3 is the natural race series in which to compete.”

The Jaguar XKR GT3, featuring a 4.2 litre V8 supercharged engine, retains the aluminium body of its production cousin, but has had modifications made in line with the regulations. Draft technical specifications are attached but the definitive specification will be revealed following the official FIA track tests, the first of which takes place at Monza on February 22/23.

The first car to be built by Apex Motorsport has already been sold to Stuart Scott, Managing Director of East Anglia’s most successful travel management company, Cambridge Business Travel. Scott, who has most recently been racing in the British GT Cup, will be driving the Jaguar in a programme of six events with a yet-to-be-named co-driver. He said of his involvement, “I feel privileged to be here at the beginning of this project. In my racing past I have always tried to do something that’s a ‘first’ or a bit different, and to take delivery of the first XKR race car is a dream come true. I’ve been aware of Richard and Apex for a long time and to now be part of such a professional team is wonderful.”

The FIA GT3 European Championship is already a very marketable racing series for teams and manufacturers, using sexy coupes that are closer to their road-car origins and therefore less expensive to build and to run. The series captured the imaginations and interest of competitors and fans alike in its inaugural 2006 season with some forty entries, and looks set to be strengthened further with the addition of Jaguars to the starting line up. Each manufacturer is represented by up to six entries ensuring a fair distribution of honours, and the performance between the different marques is balanced by the use of success penalties. Entry is aimed at gentlemen and non professional drivers graded by the FIA via a combination of racing experience and age.

The five round Championship begins in May at Silverstone, then travels to Bucharest (ROM), Monza (I) and Brno (CZ) in Europe before finishing in Dubai in November. Some owners may also plan on entering the non Championship GT3 race within the Spa 24 Hours event in Belgium at the end of July.

Richard Lloyd and his business partner at Apex, Harry Handkammer – himself a top Britcar racer – are available to talk to any potential customers for the Jaguar XKR GT3. They can be contacted on +44 (0)1280 824455 or success@apexmotorsport.co.uk

BMW M5 Touring

Speed-hungry hounds will soon be having their noses pressed to the rear screen of BMW's new M5 Touring, which comes to the UK officially for the first time from March this year.

BMW M5 TouringBMW M5 Touring 2BMW M5 Touring 3The super estate packs the same 5.0-litre V10 with 507bhp as the saloon and is only 0.1 second slower from 0-62mph, taking 4.8 seconds.

Top speed remains limited to 155mph, but if the limiter was removed the car would be capable of 200mph. Just think how much quicker that would make the weekly supermarket run.

The BMW M5 Touring is otherwise much the same as the saloon model, but with a price tag of £67,075.

Both M5 models gain a few tweaks in line with revisions for the entire 5-Series range.

The most important part of this refresh for standard Fives is the introduction of revised engines, upping power of the 530i to 272bhp and the 535d to 286bhp.

The 530d now boasts 235bhp, and the 525i gains a little mid-rev muscle, while the 523i is up 13bhp to 190bhp.

BMW has also introduced Brake Energy Regeneration, which charges the battery by using the over-run of the engine when the driver applies the brakes. This energy would otherwise be wasted, and BMW says it helps improve fuel economy by placing less of a strain on the engine.

Buyers of the larger petrol- and diesel-engined 5-Series models will be able to opt for a new Automatic Sports Transmission, which allows gearshifts through steering wheel-mounted paddles.

Keeping everything on the straight and narrow, a Lane Departure Warning System will be offered with the revised Five, which alerts the driver by vibrating the steering wheel.

And keeping the Five on the move, a new version of BMW's Active Cruise Control can now keep the car moving in stop-start traffic without the driver touching the pedals.

Spotting the revised Five will require keen eyes to note the kidney grilles that now sit flush with the bumper, the restyled air duct in the front valance or the additional contour line in the side sills.

Inside, the door panels have been restyled and there are eight programmable buttons on the dash for the most frequently used features.

Prices for the refreshed 5-Series range go from £26,980 to £49,805.

2007 Audi Q7 V12 TDI

(from Audi Press Release) An output of 500 bhp and 738 ft.-lbs. of torque – Audi is unveiling an engine which sets new standards in the diesel sector.
The majestic V12 TDI power unit with its capacity of six litres endows the high-performance Audi Q7 SUV with sports car credentials. It is the harbinger of a wide-scale model initiative, as Audi seeks to make major inroads into the US market with its diesel models – courtesy of a new emission control technology which cuts emissions drastically.

2007 Audi Q7 V12 TDI2007 Audi Q7 V12 TDI 22007 Audi Q7 V12 TDI 32007 Audi Q7 V12 TDI 4The Audi Q7 V12 TDI raises the bar in the burgeoning sports utility vehicle segment. A time of just 5.5 seconds for the dash from zero to 100 km/h and an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h give the high-performance SUV sports car calibre. Its six-litre twelve-cylinder diesel unit demonstrates the tremendous technological expertise at Audi's fingertips. 18 years after the Ingolstadt brand invented the modern-day TDI engine, it is presenting it in an all-new high-tech, range-topping guise.

Audi makes the vital breakthroughs

All of the diesel engines from Audi deserve the tag of 'sporty' on account of their impressive performance – the six and eight-cylinder 2.7 TDI, 3.0 TDI and 4.2 TDI units serve to underline this. The pioneering role that Audi assumes in the field of diesel technology stems from the peerless expertise it has amassed over recent decades. Audi engineers have been responsible for one vital breakthrough after another – the most important of these was the world's first ever TDI engine to be fitted in a passenger car, which Audi introduced in 1989.

Last year, Audi demonstrated the dynamic potential of diesel power in most memorable fashion on race tracks around the world. The V12 TDI in the R10 sports prototype unleashed in excess of 650 bhp and left its petrol-engined competitors in its wake in each of the eight races it competed in. Highlights of this winning streak included its triumph at the gruelling Le Mans 24 Hours as well as its victories in the LMP1 category of the American Le Mans Series.

The trend towards diesel engines is gathering strength all the time in the United States too. Audi is firmly convinced that the TDI engine represents the powerful and economical alternative for the future of motoring, and is therefore preparing a model drive to bolster this trend. The Q7 3.0 TDI is expected to hit showrooms in the USA in late 2008. Thanks to the exceptionally low emissions resulting from its cutting-edge Bluetec technology, this engine even complies with the US Tier II Bin 5 standard which places extremely tough demands on nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions.

SCR catalytic converter for reducing nitrogen oxide levels

At the core of the Bluetec technology is a catalytic converter known by the abbreviation of SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction). The second system component takes the form of an auxiliary tank which contains a carbonyl diamide solution. The solution is injected in small doses into the exhaust system where it decomposes into ammonia, which then breaks down the nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water. The arrival of the ultra-clean Bluetec diesel engines will see Audi hold true to its tradition of always being at the very forefront of diesel technology.

Mitsubishi Evolution IX MR

As Pete and Dud sang, it's farewell, ta-ta, farewell and goodnight to the Mitsubishi Evo IX.
But we wouldn't expect the maddest rally bred saloon to bow out without one final bout of insanity, and here it is: the Evolution IX MR.

Mitsubishi Evolution IX MRMitsubishi Evolution IX MR 2Mitsubishi Evolution IX MR 3The MR stands for Mitsubishi Racing and signifies a 366bhp version of the Evo's 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine in a limited run-out model where only 200 will come to the UK.

That's more than enough to see it from rest to 62mph in 3.9 seconds and on to 157mph.

There are some subtle modifications to the suspension to lower the ride height by 10mm at the front and 5mm at the rear, while the Super Active Yaw Control can now divide the power more accurately between the rear wheels.

There's a carbon-fibre front lip spoiler and 11-spoke alloy wheels.

Otherwise, it's lunacy as normal for the asking price of £35,539 for the last Evo of its kind in a history stretching back 14 years.

Volvo V70

Call us cynics, but when a manufacturer starts wheeling out a 'Sport' special edition, we reckon that car is living in the shadow of the executioner's axe.
By this logic, the Grim Reaper's blade is currently hovering over the Volvo V70, which has just had the Special Edition Sport model introduced to its line-up.

Volvo V70Volvo V70 2With a name like that flagging up its status, it's all the more disappointing that the new range is based on the standard 2.4-litre 168bhp petrol engine or either of the two D5 turbodiesels with 161- or 182bhp.

The Special Edition Sport replaces the previous plain old Sport and costs £1,500 less.

What is Special Edition about this new Sport model? Well, it comes with speed-sensitive power steering, 17-inch alloys, lights in the door mirrors to illuminate your feet, colour-coordinated body bits and chronograph-style instruments.

The other thing that makes us think the V70 is not long for this world is that Volvo has trimmed down the V70 range, getting rid of the slow sellers from the catalogue.

This means you can no longer order an AWD model with the 2.5 T or D5 engine options, and the entry-level 138bhp 2.4 and 126bhp 2.0 T have bitten the dust.

When will you see a new Volvo V70? That'll be 2008, with an all-new model based on the same platform as the latest S80, which brings the possibility of a V8 model into the mix.

Toyota FT-HS

Toyota's concepts are always worth a close look, and the FT-HS is no exception. There aren't many manufacturers even contemplating a 400bhp hybrid sports car, let alone making it to the road.

Toyota FT-HSToyotaToyota FT-HS 3The two-plus-two concept is a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive sports car that would seem to neatly fill the hole left by the much-missed Supra, although Toyota is denying it's the prototype for the fifth generation of the modifiers' favourite.

The Toyota FT-HS is powered by a hybrid 3.5-litre V6 with a rumoured output of more than 400bhp, and Toyota's engineers reckon it should crack 60mph in the four-second bracket - and that's before the bonkers Japanese modifiers get their hands on it.

With a triangular profile and floating C-pillar, the FT-HS looks defiantly Japanese alongside all the retro Yank metal in Detroit.

We like the look of that futuristic cockpit, with its telescopic hubless steering wheel. Pity about the flappy paddles, though - they're the future, apparently.

2007 Lexus LF-A Sports Car Concept

(from Lexus Press Release) The LF-A sports-car concept was originally shown at the 2005 NAIAS to express a bold new direction in styling for the Lexus brand. The goals for the new LF-A are no different than they were with the original concept: To build a supercar with world-class performance that is uniquely Lexus.

2007 Lexus LF-A Sports Car Concept2007 Lexus LF-A Sports Car Concept 22007 Lexus LF-A Sports Car Concept 32007 Lexus LF-A Sports Car Concept 4As with all new Lexus vehicles, the styling of the LF-A is rooted in a design direction called L-finesse. The concept of L-finesse was used to shape and detail the original LF-A, and it was used to reshape, redetail and redefine this latest version. Lexus has further refined the styling of the new LF-A to enhance its exotic nature with a greater use of curved surfaces and interesting details.

The running gear of the LF-A is just as it was with the original, powered by a high-revving 500-plus horsepower V10 engine. Its front mid-engine placement, along with a rear-mounted transaxle and rear-mounted radiators, allows for excellent weight distribution. The horsepower, superior aerodynamics, and revised styling makes a top speed of 200 mph not only possible but probable.

An "F" logo, indicating the vehicle's status as a part of the new "F" marque, is located on each front fender.

"The first LF-A was a pure concept, but one that we went so far as to conduct engineering analysis on," said Carter. "This latest concept is much closer to a vehicle that we would bring to market, and one in which we will be gauging consumer interest."

Jeep Trailhawk

For all its rugged off-road ability, the Jeep Wrangler has never really pushed the innovation envelope.
In fact, as far as communications-related metaphors go, the Wrangler is still making smoke signals and beating a goatskin drum.

Jeep TrailhawkJeep Trailhawk 2So the Jeep Trailhawk concept represents a much-needed venture into the land of at least moderate comfort and technological prowess.

The evolution of the current Wrangler, the Trailhawk is a four-wheel-drive 4x4 powered by a 3.0-litre common-rail diesel.

The oil-burner will see the Jeep to 60mph in nine seconds - hardly blistering performance, but Chrysler promises that the Trailhawk will retain the dogged off-road performance of the Wrangler.

Inside the cabin, things are worryingly civilised - two-tone leather, aluminium trim and a touch-pad console. There's still the familiar centre stack compass and inclinometer though, for those times when you're not quite sure which way is down.

Chrysler reckons the Trailhawk could see production by 2009 - by which time, no doubt, the old 'innovation envelope' metaphor shall be rendered obsolete.

2008 Lexus IS-F

(from Lexus Press Release) Much of the development of the new IS-F took place at Fuji Speedway and the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Japan. The IS-F is based on the proven rear-wheel-drive Lexus IS, which is equipped with a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension.
As well as the IS performs, Lexus engineers demanded much more of the all-new IS-F. The result is a performance tuned 5.0-liter V8 engine, topped with specially engineered heads fed by a two-stage intake system, that produces 400-plus horsepower and more than 350 ft.-lbs. of torque.
The all-new IS-F is equipped with engine-oil and transmission-fluid coolers for high-speed performance and a cylinder head-scavenging oil pump for high g-force driving.

2008 Lexus IS-F2008 Lexus IS-F 22008 Lexus IS-F 32008 Lexus IS-F 4The IS-F engine is mated to the world's first eight-speed direct sport-shift transmission. A new torque-converter lock-up control was developed that allows for a direct, crisp gear change through the constant lock-up of the torque converter in second through eighth gears. In Drive mode, the IS-F transmission performs with great smoothness, and the torque converter allows for great launch ability for fast standing-start acceleration that will register a zero-to-60 time in less than 4.9 seconds.

This unique transmission also features an advanced Manual mode. A pair of paddles located within a fingertip's reach behind the steering wheel enables the driver to make ultra-fast up-shift gear changes within a tenth of a second. Downshifts are accompanied by automated and incredibly precise throttle blips to match engine RPM to vehicle speed.

The impressive acceleration achieved by the IS-F requires it be equipped with heavy-duty Brembo brakes designed to the specifications of the Lexus engineering team. Huge, 14.2-inch cross-drilled front discs are gripped by rigid, powerful six-piston aluminum calipers, while 13.6-inch rear cross-drilled discs feature two-piston calipers. High-friction brake pads are equipped on all four wheels. The brakes are finished with the Lexus name displayed on the calipers, a first for a Lexus production vehicle.

The IS-F features custom-designed 19-inch forged alloy wheels as standard. The wheels were built to Lexus specifications by BBS and are surrounded by high-performance sport tires.

The attention to performance also extends to a modified suspension that lowers the entire car by more than a half-inch when compared to the base IS, and one full inch when compared to IS models equipped with 18-inch wheels. This specially modified suspension allows for an exciting and energetic drive, whether on a race track or the streets.

The IS-F features an all-new three-mode version of Lexus' Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. In addition to the Normal mode, the new VDIM features a Sport mode that allows the driver to push the car even further before its braking-, throttle- and steering-control systems kick in. The third VDIM system mode is Off, which allows the driver to push the IS-F to its ultimate level of handling performance.

The attention to performance is complemented by modified styling cues that differentiate the IS-F from the standard IS. Lexus engineers provided the IS-F with a dual-exhaust system and quad-tail pipes, wider front fenders, and a larger grille and rear spoiler. Both the hood and lower intake were enlarged to accommodate and cool the V8 engine.

Like the exterior, the interior of the IS-F receives unique styling with aluminized composite trim and special surface treatments. The instrument panel includes an oil-temperature gauge and shift indicator-lights, while the "F" logo is showcased on the steering wheel and rear-center console.

In addition to the usual Lexus standards of comfort and convenience, the interior of the IS-F features specially shaped and trimmed seats, which hold the driver comfortably and securely in place. The special sport seats are available in black or a unique high-contrast white and black trim.

"The intent of creating the IS-F was not to be a competitor to other performance-sport sedans," said Carter. "Rather, the goal was to create a true performance sedan in a uniquely Lexus way-one that is totally authentic with a unique interpretation of raw driving thrill at all speeds and provides a whole new definition of 'usable power.'"

The IS-F will arrive at Lexus dealerships in early 2008.

Kia Kue on Detroit Show

Kia is throwing everything at its Kue concept in downtown Detroit.

It's an SUV/sports coupe/crossover kinda vehicle, which might sound like a concept too far, but the Kue carries it off with some panache.

There's no doubting the sporty part of the equation, thanks to the low roofline and sharply creased styling. Oh, and those perennial chav favourites - front-hinging scissor doors.

As for the SUV bit, take a look at those massive 22-inch chrome wheels with the tyres squeezed over them.

Kia says the Kue showcases its talent for building sports cars, but we'll have to wait and see if the Korean firm delivers a production version of the Kue before judging this statement.

However, it's good to see a manufacturer being bold and daring, and the Kue definitely fits that description.

2008 Cadillac CTS

(from General Motors Press Release) ALL-NEW 2008 CADILLAC CTS DESIGN INTENDS TO INJECT DRAMATIC CHARACTER INTO THE LUXURY SEDAN CATEGORY

DETROIT – Aggressive and elegant, expressive and sophisticated, the 2008 Cadillac CTS exudes a dramatic design presence. This all-new luxury sedan not only pushes Cadillac’s acclaimed design theme higher, it aims to redraw the boundaries of the normally conservative luxury sedan category. Inside and out, the 2008 CTS contradicts many traditional design conventions. CTS’ design expresses its serious performance intent, yet also is more elegant and luxurious. It’s a sedan in the heart of the luxury market, yet reaches for the charisma of a sports car. CTS is thoroughly new and contemporary, even while it evokes the grandeur of classic Cadillac cars.

2008 Cadillac CTS2008 Cadillac CTS 22008 Cadillac CTS 32008 Cadillac CTS 42008 Cadillac CTS 5Since the inception of the first-generation car in 2002, CTS is about trend-setting design. The edgy form of the CTS initially created controversy. But from the moment it hit the market, its design also attracted lots of buyers, with design often noted as a top reason for purchase. The all-new 2008 edition extends that edgy and contemporary character, with an injection of elegance.

On the exterior, there’s no mistaking the five-passenger sedan’s stronger stance, thanks to a two-inch wider track. Additionally, the overall shape of the CTS features a faster profile with more rake, coupled with surfaces that add elegance and grace. Borrowing from Cadillac’s legendary heritage, design cues include vertically shaped headlights and taillamps, signature light emitting diode (LED) exterior lighting, horizontal spline lines and its dihedral-shaped hood, all highlighted with many bright and jeweled accents.

Just as definitive of CTS’ evolution in design is the dramatically new interior. Like the exterior, it expresses luxury and performance themes with appointments that are both purposeful and elegant. Advances in surface development, technology, materials and construction combine to make the CTS cabin a compelling blend of technical sophistication, precise tailoring and luxurious character.

Exterior: sporty sophistication meets substance

Coupled with a new overall shape, the most evolutionary dimension of the 2008 CTS comes in the form of a two-inch wider track as a result of the addition of the new, optional all-wheel-drive configuration. The wider stance gives the new model a more planted, capable and well-grounded appearance that’s exemplified by much tighter tire-to-fender relationships.

The wider stance also enables more tumblehome – the vehicle sides are sculpted inward – delivering an appearance of rear-wheel-drive performance with a lower roof line, without compromising headroom or a roomy interior.

Additionally, a wider, tapering sail panel, lower, more sculpted hood, smoother wheel housing lips and a tighter wheel-to-body relationship help communicate the CTS’ agility as well as its sophistication and substance.

Seven-spoke, 17-inch wheels or available nine-spoke, 18-inch wheels surround larger high-performance brake calipers and rotors. Both painted and machined finishes are available for the standard 17-inch wheels. The larger, 18-inch wheels are available in a premium multicoat finish or a high-polish finish.

Inspired by Cadillac’s landmark Sixteen concept car, the CTS front appearance is immediately recognizable, yet also is new. The large, chrome dual-textured grille is significantly more vertical in shape, and is both aggressive and intricate. A large center-positioned wreath and crest add to the three-dimensional face. The front fascia is balanced with vertically stacked headlamps with bright bezels stacked in a staircase-like array. The lower air intake is flanked on both sides with fog lamps and brake duct intakes.

Side air extractors located forward of the front doors are a modern homage to Cadillac’s grand heritage. Additional bright details include chrome molding surrounding the side windows, and three-inch chromed exhaust outlets.

Even on the rear of the car, where many sedans are ordinary, Cadillac designers injected charisma. The vertical taillamps are a Cadillac trademark. The roofline and rear backlight have a coupe-like profile. At the centerline, the decklid carries the angular and directional theme of the front.

Dimensionally, the 2008 CTS is 191.6 inches (4766 mm) long, 72.5 inches (1841 mm) wide and 58 inches (1472 mm) in height. Wheelbase is 113.4 inches (2880 mm) with a front/rear track of 61.8 / 62.0 inches (1575 / 1585 mm).

Interior: performance and elegance combine

The 2008 CTS represents a new design theme for Cadillac interiors, emphasizing technical precision with elegant, hand-crafted details. Dramatically different from the original, the interior design is decidedly more upscale, with added ornamentation, luxury and attention to detail. Strict attention to packaging, premium materials, surface development and comfort combine to meet the discriminating tastes of luxury performance sedan buyers.

Upper instrument panel and door trim surfaces are hand-cut, sewn and wrapped by expert craftsmen. Analog instrumentation that is tightly framed with a compact hood tri-tubular, chromed cluster, is defined by bright accents. An integrated center stack design, with either a satin metallic finish or genuine Sapele wood, blends into the lower instrument panel that sweeps forward and away of front-seat occupants. The hand-assembled center console leads seamlessly into the center stack, providing a sportier “cockpit” feel for the driver and passenger without compromising space.

Heated and ventilated seats incorporate new “thin-seat” technology for maximum occupant comfort and enhanced rear-seat leg, knee and foot room. A signature V-shaped medallion appears as a decorative touch on the backs of the front seats. French stitching is used throughout the interior, including the upper instrument panel, door inserts, seats and the shifter boot.

Clean, white ambient light emitting diode (LED) soft backlighting is positioned in the door pulls, foot wells and recessed between the upper and lower instrument panels. The result is a dramatic effect similar to recessed lighting used in contemporary homes.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel includes standard integrated controls for cruise and audio system.

Inside and out, the 2008 CTS exemplifies an evolution of Cadillac design that achieves a remarkable combination of luxury, technology and performance in a sedan aimed at creating the desire and head-turning quotient normally reserved for sports cars.

The all-new 2008 Cadillac CTS has been painstakingly designed and engineered to unite luxury sedan poise and sports car performance. A redesigned chassis, an enhanced engine and transmission lineup and all-wheel drive combine to push the CTS further in all directions with more power and performance, enhanced ride quality, quietness and safety.

The first-generation CTS (2002-2007) helped re-establish Cadillac’s rear-wheel-drive performance credentials. The landmark CTS-V, a 400-horsepower specimen of power and precision, ushered in a new era of performance for both its drivers and the engineers who created it. With this in mind, the Cadillac team behind the 2008 CTS took to development roads in Germany, China and the U.S. intending to enhance the car’s power and performance in every way. The result is a machine capable of serious performance driving, while simultaneously delivering the panache unique to luxury sedans.

New 3.6L V-6 VVT, six-speed automatic join powertrain lineup

The 2008 Cadillac CTS features GM’s new 3.6L direct-injection V-6 VVT engine, delivering an estimated 300 horsepower (223 kW) and 270 lb.-ft. (366 Nm) of torque. This new powerplant is a compelling mixture of power, smoothness, efficiency and technical sophistication.

The 3.6L direct-injection engine will be the top-level engine option for the 2008 CTS, joining the existing 2.8L V-6 and 3.6L V-6. Designed to operate with regular unleaded gasoline, the new 3.6-liter direct-injection V-6 produces power similar to many V-8 engines, but with much better fuel economy. With direct injection, fuel is delivered directly to the combustion chamber to create a more complete burn of the air/fuel mixture. Less fuel is required to produce the equivalent horsepower, especially at normal cruising speeds, of a conventional port-injection combustion system.

The application of gasoline direct-injection technology on the 3.6L VVT engine contributes greatly to a 15-percent increase in horsepower; 8-percent increase in torque, and 3-percent improvement in brake-specific fuel consumption. Additionally, the application of direct injection reduces cold-start hydrocarbon emissions by 25 percent.

For the first time, the 2008 CTS will be available in both rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations. Additionally, the transmission lineup now consists only of six-speed units – an Aisin six-speed manual or – new for CTS – a Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic.

The current 3.6L VVT engine that produces 258 horsepower (192 kW) and 252 lb.-ft (342 Nm) of torque will serve as the base engine in North America and will be available in rear- and all-wheel-drive layouts.

The 2.8L VVT engine will be available only on rear-drive export models of the CTS. The all-aluminum, 60-degree DOHC, four-valve-per-cylinder engine develops 210 horsepower (156 kW) at 6500 rpm and 194 lb.-ft. (263 Nm) of torque at 3200 rpm.

The Aisin six-speed manual transmission, introduced in 2005, is fully synchronized (including reverse) with a single overdrive. This allows for lower propshaft speeds and improved engine noise, vibration and harshness. A new short-throw shifter has been added for improved precision.

The Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic is the same transmission introduced on the Cadillac STS-V in 2005, and is designed to decrease engine rpm and enhance overall fuel economy.

On vehicles equipped with the new all-wheel-drive system, the 6L50 will be equipped with a new active transfer case that automatically transfers torque from the rear to the front of the vehicle for optimal traction, safety and performance. A limited-slip differential also is available.

Chassis enhancements include all wheel drive, globally tested suspension

The 2008 CTS features a greatly revised chassis featuring a two-inch wider track and the application of all-wheel drive. The front track is increased to 61.8 inches (1569 mm), and rear track is now 62.0 inches (1575 mm). Wheelbase remains at 113.4 inches (2880 mm).

Cadillac engineers have designed and developed new geometry for both the independent short/long arm front suspension and the multilink rear suspension. Engineers implemented numerous tweaks and revisions to the suspension using extensive computer modeling, combined with development driving of prototype cars on roads all over the world, but mostly in North America, Europe and China . From famed tracks such as Germany ’s Nьrburgring to everyday roads in the U.S. and China, the CTS suspension was exhaustively tested and honed.

The use of aluminum in the upper and lower front control arms and knuckles helps reduce mass and contributes to higher limits in handling and dynamic wheel control. Front suspensions for the rear-drive model and the all-wheel-drive version, while similar, have been designed to best meet the chassis dynamics of the individual versions.

The engine cradle has six attachment points, two more than typically used on a performance sedan, to better handle heavier loads and engine vibration.

New for CTS is a tower-to-tower brace that adds cross-car stiffness and enhances the overall steering feel. This is an innovation from the high-performance CTS-V model that has been modified and adapted for use in the 2008 CTS.

The multilink rear suspension, with a fully isolated subframe, is an uncompromising design with excellent suspension kinematics that delivers a superior ride with excellent handling. The rear suspension design is shared in both the rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive models, and has been extensively revised to accommodate the larger rear track.

The braking and steering systems for CTS are all-new, with extensive changes to increase responsiveness, premium “feel” and performance in spirited driving conditions.

The 2008 CTS features standard 17-by-8-inch aluminum wheels paired with Michelin H-rated (P235/55R17) all-season radials. The optional performance suspension includes an 18- by- 8.5-inch wheel with the all-new Michelin Pilot Sport 2 (P235/50R18) tire that can either be V- or Y- (summer) rated.

In addition to this finely tuned hardware, the 2008 CTS features advanced chassis technology in the form of Cadillac’s StabiliTrak electronic chassis control system. StabiliTrak integrates the car’s standard four-channel ABS with the full-function traction control, hydraulic brake assist and engine drag control systems.

2007 Mitsubishi Prototype X

(from Mitsubishi Press Release) In Detroit, Mitsubishi Motors hints today at the next generation of its iconic supercar, the much anticipated and all-new Lancer Evolution. Consistent with MMCs impeccable sporting credentials, its high performance engine, outstanding dynamics and sharp design will appeal to enthusiasts worldwide. As such, Prototype X also demonstrates the depth and breadth of the new Lancer sports sedan family, ranging from entry model (1.5 l in Europe) right up to the all-new Lancer Evolution, the range topping supercar.

2007 Mitsubishi Prototype X
2007 Mitsubishi Prototype X 2
Coming Soon: (R)Evolution

Heir of the Lancer 1600 GSR of the 70s or the Lancer EX 2000 Turbo of the 80s, the Lancer Evolution has lived up to its namesake by greatly improving with each successive generation since 1992. (Lancer Evolution VIII was the first to be officially offered in the European market).

As Prototype X demonstrates, the Lancer Evolution will soon make perhaps the largest leap in overall capability seen between two generations of this model. The next Lancer Evolution will offer major gains in handling dynamics and technology while maintaining the kind of thrilling turbo engine performance that has made the model a legend around the world.

Although clearly based on the new Lancer and sharing its distinctive shark-mouth grille opening, Prototype X features a unique front end, rear fenders and decklid. Making a maximum-performance statement, Prototype X looks the part with its boxed fenders, aggressively sloping hood with integral air scoop, 20-inch alloy wheels with massive brakes and the high-tech LED turn signals in the sideview mirrors.

Inside, the deeply contoured bucket seats are upholstered in high-grip suede-like material An electronic lap counter hints at the cars weekend club racer capability, while the red LED light band that spans the doors and the dash surface might suggest a customizing idea to future customers.

The user technology in Prototype X previews what will be available for the next Lancer Evolution. While not all design features and content seen on Prototype X will make it to the production vehicle, the overall design will carry through.

Next-Gen Power

The engine powering Prototype X and the next Lancer Evolution is a turbocharged version of the all-new aluminum 4B11 2.0-liter DOHC MIVEC engine used in the 2008 Lancer sports sedan.

It will yield the highest power rating ever in a Lancer Evolution model. (Since development continues, final engine output figures will be revealed at a later date.) Significantly, the newest Lancer Evolution will have less differentiation from market to market than the previous generations.

The new models aluminum engine block is a significant 20 kg lighter than the iron-block 4G63 engine used in all previous models, which aids weight distribution. In addition, its orientation (exhaust located on bulkhead side) allows for improved placement that helps to lower the center of gravity.

Although the new Lancer Evolution engine block is lighter, it was designed from the outset for high-performance turbocharged applications. High inherent strength has been achieved partly through over-engineering of the open deck block, and the use of large water jackets and metal areas around each siamesed cylinder bore. The reciprocating assembly of the turbocharged 4B11 is capable of withstanding high levels of boost.

Automated Manual Transmission

Prototype X is equipped with the automated manual transmission with magnesium steering wheel paddle shifters that will be available on the next Lancer Evolution.

This new transmission will offer lightning fast, paddle-shift actuated shifting when desired, along with offering a fully automatic mode. This unit is not a conventional torque-converter automatic transmission, but rather a true auto-capable manual similar to that used on some of the worlds most notable performance models.

For stick shift purists, the next Lancer Evolution will still offer a conventional 5-speed manual transmission. With the 4B11 turbo engines stronger torque performance, a 5-speed will provide optimal acceleration response.

Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC)

The next Lancer Evolution, while still providing the levels of engine performance that appeal to this models loyal core customers, will expand dynamic capability with the new Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system.

Combining intelligent full-time four-wheel drive with stability control, S-AWC is a further development of the advanced full-time 4WD technology first introduced on the new-generation Outlander SUV for 2007.

In Prototype X and the upcoming Lancer Evolution this next-generation system combines an Active Center Differential (ACD) with an Active Yaw Control (AYC) rear differential and Active Skid Control (ASC). The AYC rear differential has never been offered on a Lancer Evolution sold in the U.S. market.

The combination of all these technologies will help the Lancer Evolution make optimal use of its considerable torque and also ensure the highest level of dynamic capability and stability ever in this model. At the same time, the new technology will further enhance the exhilarating driving performance character that customers have come to expect from this model.

The next Lancer Evolution once again features its own suspension system, replacing steel stampings of the standard Lancer with race-proven forged aluminum components. Due to the high rigidity of the new Project Global platform, the Evolutions suspension can be tuned to provide a more compliant and stable ride than before without compromising handling performance a trait that is expected from a true world-class performance sedan.

With exciting performance* assured Mitsubishi will be able to equip the upcoming Lancer Evolution to be a markedly better car for everyday driving. User technologies introduced on the new Outlander and Lancer models will also be offered in the next Lancer Evolution, including a premium Rockford-Fosgate 650-watt (max.) audio system, HDD navigation system with music server, Bluetooth, steering wheel audio controls, and an automatic climate control system.

2007 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Concept

(from General Motors Press Release) The Chevrolet Camaro concept was the celebrated star of the 2006 auto show season. You can only top that by literally and figuratively blowing the top off. That’s exactly what GM’s designers and engineers did to create the Camaro convertible concept. The introduction of the Camaro convertible concept was on the eve of the North American International Auto Show at GM Style, an exclusive, fashion-splashed event combining celebrities, couture and automobiles.

2007 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Concept2007 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Concept 22007 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Concept 32007 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Concept 42007 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Concept 5 The Camaro convertible concept, wrapped in Hugger Orange pearl tri-coat paint with twin gunmetal gray sport stripes, is based on the original Camaro concept, with only minor changes required to accommodate the convertible body style.

“The best follow-up to last year’s award-winning Camaro concept is a Camaro convertible,” said Ed Welburn, GM vice president, global design. “The Camaro convertible concept instantly evokes an emotional response – it’s a vehicle that you want to make room for in your garage.”

The Camaro convertible concept embodies strong heritage while appealing to a new generation of customers who seek a distinctive statement in a new car.

“For some of us, an emotional bond was formed when we introduced the Camaro coupe last year,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. “It is magnificent. But now this year, if this Camaro convertible doesn’t make your heart beat faster, you should see either your optometrist or your cardiologist, because you have a problem.”

Chevrolet already has announced production plans for the Camaro, which will go on sale in 2009. A production convertible model will be added later that year.

Fun spirit

Like the Camaro concept vehicle, the Camaro convertible concept blends a dramatic, forward-looking design that is mindful of the brand’s storied heritage. That design includes classic long hood/short deck proportions and a wide, wheels-at-the-corners stance that gives the vehicle the look of hugging corners even when stationary.

The Camaro convertible concept is motivated by a torquey V-8 engine that rightly sends power to the rear wheels via a manual transmission. It also features a four-wheel independent suspension system and four-wheel disc brakes.

“There is an undeniably fun spirit with the Camaro convertible concept,” said Peper. “The promise of fun made by the convertible top is reinforced with the Camaro’s ‘let’s go’ stance – it’s a car that begs to be driven.”

The Camaro convertible concept shares exterior dimensions with the Camaro concept, although the convertible concept’s windshield surround, which features a bright anodized finish, is changed slightly to accommodate the convertible top.

Additional design details include:

- Tonneau cover over the folded top
- “Halo” headlamps
- LED taillamps
- Rear spoiler with LED-lit CHMSL
- Racing-inspired fuel filler door
- Front-inlet hood scoop, inspired by the Corvette Z06
- Heritage-inspired rear fender “gills”
- Anodized aluminum door handles
- Bold 21-inch (front) and 22-inch (rear) wheels, with accent color

The Camaro convertible concept’s Hugger Orange pearl tri-coat color is a contemporary update of the classic hue, which was originally offered in 1969. It is complemented with twin gunmetal gray sport stripes. The modern interpretation of the classic color and its dark accent stripes simultaneously reflect the Camaro’s heritage and deliver a deep, lustrous and thoroughly contemporary appearance.

The Camaro convertible concept rides on 21-inch front wheels and 22-inch rear wheels. The wheels have a deep-dish, five-spoke design and feature charcoal center sections with bright outer edges and a red outline on the wheel edge. The charcoal wheels complement the gunmetal gray stripes on the body.

Inspired cockpit

Inside, the Camaro convertible features a simple yet purposeful interior that reflects design elements inspired by the muscle car era, including the first-generation Camaro. A new, light-and-dark color scheme enhances the airy feel of the convertible, particularly when the top is lowered.

The seats’ fronts feature platinum-tone leather surrounding suede-like Alcantara® inserts, with black, sculpted seatbacks. The use of light color only on the seating surface is reminiscent of vintage houndstooth interiors, while a matching, tri-coat platinum paint is used to accent the door panels and instrument panel, giving a modern, bold feel to the interior.

“The light-on-dark interior coloring makes a strong statement that conveys the spirit of freedom and fun that is embodied by a Camaro convertible,” said Micah Jones, interior designer.
As with the Camaro coupe concept, the convertible concept features an instrument panel inspired by first-generation Camaros, including an intricate “round-gauges-in-square-holes” design. The gauges have a deep, three-dimensional appearance, with white faces and red pointers.

“The instrument panel – including the four auxiliary gauges mounted in front of the shifter – pays homage to first-generation Camaros, while achieving a modern appearance through its refined integration of components,” said Jones.

Craftsmanship and attention to detail are evidenced throughout the interior, including the smoke satin aluminum finish on trim plates, vents, seat handles and safety belt buckles. The shifter and pedals are made of billet aluminum. The steering wheel has a detailed, deep-dish three-spoke design and the front seats are hinged at the center – rather than the sides – for an integrated appearance. A separate ignition button is used to start the engine and the speedometer and tachometer needles complete full-sweep indexing when the engine rumbles to life.

A “spine” motif runs through the center of the vehicle and on the seatbacks, including a prominent center console that stretches to the rear seat. The spine reinforces the symmetry of the Camaro convertible, as well as its precision.

An attainable icon

The original Camaro was introduced to the Baby Boomer generation, a large group of young, individualistic and mobile Americans that drove fundamental changes in the auto industry. The Camaro was personal, sporty and powerful – attributes that were typically found on more expensive, smaller and, often, foreign sports cars. The Camaro represented a real life-sized sporty car that was attainable for just about everyone. An almost endless list of optional features, colors and trim combinations ensured owners could tailor their Camaro to their exact taste.

As Boomers transitioned into larger vehicles to accommodate growing families, younger drivers embraced used Camaros as their first cars, and third- and fourth-generations of the Camaro continued to deliver affordable fun and performance to a new generation of enthusiasts. Indeed, hundreds of thousands of owners of all walks of life have found driving fun in a Camaro during the past 40 years.

The new Camaro concepts draw on their namesakes’ heritage, but also the global, youthful influences of the 21 st century. These influences are seen in the Camaro convertible concept’s bold proportions, tailored wheel-to-body relationship and detailed interior – including the multi-dimensional instruments. It’s a design that resonates with a generation of younger car buyers influenced by highly stylized “tuner” cars and import sports cars.

“Youthful buyers want a car that makes a statement in its design as much as its performance,” said Brian Smith, exterior designer. “The new Camaro concepts bridge heritage with contemporary style, with a design that is simultaneously admired among import-influenced youth and traditional enthusiasts.”

Along with style and performance, the timeless spirit of fun is woven into the new Camaro concepts.

“Camaro has always represented the American ethic that style and performance don’t belong exclusively to the wealthy,” said Smith. “Camaro has always been everybody’s sports car, and these new concepts demonstrate its spirit is relevant for a new generation.”

Chrysler Nassau Concept Drops in Motown

DETROIT — Chrysler says its Nassau concept "explores a new expression of the brand" and hints that some of the design cues could find their way into the next-generation 300C that's due after 2010.

Chrysler Nassau ConceptThe four-passenger Nassau rides on an ample 120-inch wheelbase but looks more compact dimensionally than today's 300C. Chrysler describes the car as a "four-door luxury coupe," but in fact it has more in common with the pillarless four-door hardtops of the 1950s, with full retracting front and rear side glass. The curvy silhouette of the greenhouse appears to have been adapted from the Mercedes-Benz CLS.

The Nassau has a fairly conventional face, with an update on the brand's evolving signature egg-crate grille done in chrome and satin aluminum, flanked by browlike headlamps that sweep back into the fenders.

The car's most distinctive exterior design feature is the "boattail" rear end and wraparound rear glass, both of which bear a vague resemblance to the Renault Vel Satis. The rear hatch is steeply raked and buttressed by oversize LED taillamps.

The Nassau rides on 21-inch wheels and tires.

Chrysler poured a lot of attention into the interior details, including a sculpted instrument panel said to be inspired by the work of the sculptor Brancusi and an instrument cluster designed to look like an expensive timepiece.

The cabin is fitted with four bucket seats trimmed in cream-colored leather with bamboo-textured suede accents. There are chrome accents through the cabin, which also boasts twin longitudinal skylights, a pair of flush-mounted video screens in the rear, and console-mounted joystick controls.

VW makes cleanest ever diesel

The US is yet to wake from its slumber over the benefits of diesel engines as a means to power passenger cars, but it is helping to improve diesel technology and design.

vw diesel conceptThe reluctance of Americans to embrace diesels means car manufacturers have to work all the harder to convince our cross-pond cousins, which in turn means we get ever more sophisticated engines.

All of this has resulted in Volkswagen coming up with the cleanest ever diesel engine.

The 2.0-litre turbodiesel unit has been designed to comply with Californian emissions standards and to do this it uses a nitrogen-oxide reservoir catalytic convertor.

This system captures nitrogen oxide from escaping at the exhaust, reducing these emissions by 90 per cent.

The technology is part of the BlueTec joint venture between Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes, and VW says the engine will go into production in 2008.

Nissan Unwraps Bevel Concept

DETROIT — Nissan rolled out its Bevel concept at the 2007 North American International Auto Show on Sunday, an "advanced design study" that appears to answer the question: What should pet-centric empty-nesters drive once the kids have flown the coop?
Nissan Bevel ConceptThe Bevel, which Nissan describes as a "multipurpose vehicle unlike currently available sport-utility vehicles or minivans," has a rear hatch with a workbench that folds down and snaps into place. It also has a "utility/pet zone" with a 360-degree pet leash swivel connection point and a large, removable "doggie hutch" pet carrier that fits into the cargo hold.

The Bevel "conceptually" features a 2.5-liter V6.

Nissan describes the Bevel as having asymmetrical styling, a high-utility three-zone interior, and technology ranging from glass roof-mounted solar panels to drive-by-wire steering, throttle and braking. The exterior cues include two passenger-side doors and a rear door that opens nearly 5.5 feet.

The concept's roof cargo system can carry loads up to 250 pounds and features six hexagon-shaped "pucks" with pop-up hooks. The Bevel's instrument panel moves 4 inches forward and back when the driver's door is opened or closed. A "command central" zone in the cabin features screens that display images from side-view-mirror cameras.

Nissan 350Z Photography by Webb Bland

(notes by Webb Bland) As a freelance automotive photographer, I enjoy shooting a wide variety of automobiles. I don't focus strictly on exotics or a certain brand; I shoot what's pleasing to the eye, be it an Audi or an Aston Martin. Thus, my growing collection of photographs concerns a great assortment of different vehicles ranging from the Ferrari Enzo and the Porsche Carrera GT super-exotics, to the more "modest" Volkswagen GTI and Subaru WRX STi. Fine art prints of my photos are available from my website.

The heavily modified Nissan 350Z above belongs to a good friend of mine, so I have been fortunate enough to have many opportunities to shoot the car in a range of locations.

Suzuki Flix Features 60-Inch Movie Screen

DETROIT — One of the most entertaining concepts at the 2007 North American International Auto Show has to be the Suzuki Flix, which features a giant moonroof that does double duty as a 60-inch movie screen.

Suzuki FlixSuzuki Flix 2
The Flix goes for the theater look, from its midnight black paint job to its "theater red" perimeter LED lighting. But the in-vehicle movie system is the real showstopper. The concept includes a high-density digital projection system that pops up out of the front roof panel vent. The movie can be shown on the car's movie screen or positioned so the film displays on the side of a building or billboard.

The interior was done up to look like a private screening room, with plush materials and four bucket seats that pivot for better movie viewing. The cabin includes red floor strip lighting.

Chevrolet Volt Concept

Brace yourself for a shock (shock... Volt... do you see what we did there?). What you see before you is a truly futuristic concept: an electric vehicle that uses a gas engine to create additional power. The shocking bit? It's American.

Chevrolet Volt ConceptChevrolet Volt Concept 2Yes, this is the Chevrolet Volt, and it's a clever bit of kit.

To get around the problem of the short range of electric vehicles, in addition to a lithium-ion battery, the Volt also boasts a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. This spins at a constant speed to create electricity and replenish the battery.

Chevy reckons that, with timely recharges, the Volt will return about 150mpg. Running on bio-ethanol, this figure jumps to 525 miles per gallon of petrol.

Even without charging, the Volt's range is a giant 640 miles. Chevrolet says the technology can also be modified to run on hydrogen power, diesel or 100 per cent ethanol.

Experts predict that the technology needed to move the Volt into mass production could be ready by 2010.

Smack the pony

A salutary lesson. Should you take it upon yourself to destroy a 550 Maranello after a forecourt row... make sure you get the right one.

Unlike David Higgins. The director of a central heating firm in Middlesex trashed the Ferrari when he felt angry at a cash dispute with the owner of a garage.

ferrariThinking the £65,000 Fezza belonged to his adversary, Higgins repeatedly rammed the car with his pick-up truck in a 'moment of madness'.

Garage owner Richard Lukins had the car parked outside his north London premises, but the Ferrari belonged to customer Matthew Sala.

After smashing the car, Higgins phoned the police and waited to be arrested. He was found guilty and fined £1,000 plus costs.

Poor Matthew Sala, on the other hand, faces a battle through the civil courts to get compensation for his wrecked Ferrari.

That Smarts: Chinese Little Car Looks Familiar

SHIJIAZHUANGSHI, China — From Shuanghuan, the company that built the first Chinese Honda CR-V look-alike — and prompted a lawsuit — comes the new City Mini, which looks amazingly similar to DaimlerChrysler's Smart.

shang huan city miniThe same company currently offers a shockingly BMW X5-like SUV called the SCEO. The City Mini, then code-named S6, had been pulled at the last minute from the Beijing Auto Show late last year, presumably so as not to attract the attention of DaimlerChrysler. Now the company says the little car will go on sale in China in mid-January.

Although the City Mini's external appearance is extremely close to the Smart, there's a very important difference. What looked like the black hue of the two-tone paint on a Smart is, in fact, a very important aspect of the model. It is the Tridion safety cell, a highly rigid structure that provides serious crash protection. Shuanghuan failed to catch the importance of that and simply offers two-tone paint on the City Mini.

The City Mini is also slightly larger than the original European city car, at 118.5 inches long versus the Smart's 98.4 inches. Both have 0.8-liter engines, but the Chinese powertrain lacks the sophistication of the Smart version.

Last fall, there were many news reports on the appearance of a Chinese Smart clone. That was from another company that, faced with the insistence of DaimlerChrysler, quickly stopped production. Shuanghuan, on the other hand, is a seasoned clone producer, and observers would be more reluctant to bet on the outcome of a legal battle.

BMW Teases Nameless Joy Machine

bmw devicebmw device 2bmw device 3The company says it is Bluetooth and USB compatible, accepts voice commands and will play CDs, DVDs and MP3 files. How it fits with BMW cars, and whether it will be available on U.S. models soon, the company doesn't say.

The gadget is self-recharging and has a 65,000-color LCD screen, according to a teaser on the corporate Web site, which shows a rotating object that looks like a large iPod or a very thin portable radio. The tag line "What is your idea of joy?" has to suffice instead of actual specs or on-sale dates, although BMW does say more details will be online in mid-January.

2007 Lincoln MKR Concept: more photos

(from Ford Motor Company Press Release)
Reinvigorating Lincoln: The Lincoln MKR concept is a dynamic premium four-door coupe that expresses Lincoln’s future design strategy.

2007 Lincoln MKR Concept2007 Lincoln MKR Concept 22007 Lincoln MKR Concept 32007 Lincoln MKR Concept 42007 Lincoln MKR Concept 52007 Lincoln MKR Concept 62007 Lincoln MKR Concept 72007 Lincoln MKR Concept 8TwinForce™ Power: The all-new TwinForce™ engine in the Lincoln MKR concept marks the birth of an all-new engine family. The concept’s 3.5-liter V-6 gasoline twin-turbo direct injection engine delivers 415 horsepower and 400 foot-pounds of torque – comparable to and better than some V-8 engines. It also runs on E-85 ethanol in the Lincoln MKR concept. “Guilt-free” luxury: Materials including chrome-free leather and renewable resources such as a reengineered oak instrument panel, mohair carpet and soy seat foam provide the Lincoln MKR concept a premium look and feel that’s also environmentally friendly.

DEARBORN, Mich., Jan. 1, 2007 – Lincoln is pulling the wraps off a head-turning new concept car at the North American International Auto Show next week, signaling its design strategy for the next-generation of premium American vehicles and launching a new engine family.

The Lincoln MKR concept introduces a new design language of “elegant simplicity” on a four-door coupe that also features environmentally friendly amenities and fuel-saving technology, including its TwinForce™ engine.

The concept’s 3.5-liter gasoline twin-turbocharged direct-injection V-6 performs comparably or better than V-8 engines, delivering 415 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque on renewable E-85 ethanol.

A New Era of Lincoln Design
The new design – created by a team led by Peter Horbury, executive director, Design, The Americas – showcases the visual elements that will influence a new generation of Lincoln products.

“We’ve reinterpreted the best of Lincoln designs over time, preserving the restraint and elegance synonymous with the brand,” says Horbury. “The Lincoln MKR concept is sophisticated and modern, resembling an athlete – extremely strong and fit but looks elegant in a tuxedo.

“This romantic, sporting coupe should turn heads at the show. And, ultimately, this new design language will help lead us forward in the growing premium segment.”

The Lincoln MKR concept features seven key exterior cues, which define modern Lincoln design:

- Clean, uncluttered surfaces
- Powerful, dynamic beltline
- Chamfered surface running parallel to the beltline
- Distinctive Lincoln bow-wave, double-wing grille opening
- Thin, horizontal taillamps that run from one side to the other
- Significant C-pillar smoothly transitioning into the cantilevered roof, and
- Powerful cantrail/roofrail

Three or four of these design elements are likely to appear on future production Lincolns, including the concept’s most dramatic feature: the double-wing grille inspired by the 1941 Lincoln Continental Cabriolet. The split grille is designed to resemble the bow of a boat cutting through the water, giving the oversize Lincoln star a proper home on which to stand proud.

The Lincoln MKR concept’s four doors and body side remain characteristically clean. A button concealed in the chrome door trim springs open the four ‘winged’ doors, slightly inclined for additional sophistication and a touch of drama.

From the rear, the coupe concept is instantly recognizable as a Lincoln, thanks to full-width LED taillamps stretching from side to side.

From above, this Lincoln proudly showcases its brand heritage with a large structural Lincoln star that punctuates the glass roof spanning the top of the car.

Modern, ‘Guilt-free’ Luxury Touches

Inside, the Lincoln MKR concept defines a new direction for modern luxury, with ambient lighting and contrasting colors and materials that offer both a new look and philosophy for future Lincoln interiors.

“The concept’s interior builds on the success of earlier Lincolns but stretches the boundaries even further,” said Gordon Platto, chief designer of the Lincoln MKR concept. “This unique combination of materials gives the Lincoln MKR a rich interior but features the environmentally friendly amenities that luxury buyers expect in premium goods, including vehicles.”

A black oak instrument panel engineered from recycled wood stretches from side to side and carries through to a twin-level floating center console that extends into the rear of the cabin.

This expansive ‘T-shaped’ panel houses the passenger information display system seamlessly disguised by the flush touch screen control surfaces and a navigation screen that can be concealed by a powered door.

The instrument cluster provides a jewelry-like focal point. Chrome-trimmed gauges illuminated with Ice Blue lighting can be easily viewed in harmony with the concave spoke steering wheel that includes retractable paddle shifters.

“Lighting is an important design element,” Platto said. “We know customers are paying more attention to the lighting in their homes than ever before, and we wanted to leverage it to create even more ambiance and drama inside the concept.”

Ice Blue lighting is carried throughout the high-contrast interior, emitting from the door panels, mohair-carpeted foot wells, seats, center console and perhaps most dramatically from the large Lincoln star above which is easily viewed from each of the Lincoln MKR concept’s four seats.

Each soy-foam based seat stands alone, looking as if suspended in air, wrapped in a creamy cashmere leather made through a more environmentally friendly chromium-free process. Seatbacks are finished with high-gloss, ceramic-looking shells.

The concept also features the THX II Certified Car Audio System, Lincoln’s signature audio system, which produces sound quality comparable to home theater systems.

Innovative TwinForce™ Powertrain

Under the Lincoln MKR’s sculpted hood is the exquisitely detailed TwinForce engine, finished in chrome and accented in the cranberry red metallic paint that dresses the rest of the modern exterior.

This marks the birth of the new TwinForce engine family that will power production versions of a range of future Ford and Lincoln products.

TwinForce uses direct injection technology and turbocharging. These technologies are common in diesel engines but have only recently been combined together in gasoline engines.

The Lincoln MKR’s engine also is flex fuel capable, providing the driver with the flexibility to switch back and forth between gasoline and E-85 ethanol. Combining the high octane found in E-85 or premium gasoline with TwinForce technology allows the MKR’s V-6 to deliver 415 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque – an impressive 118 horsepower per liter.

To achieve this type of performance from a V-8 would require an engine displacement of 6.0-liter or larger, nearly double the size of the 3.5-liter in the Lincoln MKR. As a result of the smaller V-6, the Lincoln MKR concept delivers 15 percent better fuel economy than a V-8 with similar performance.

The concept’s engine is mated to a six-speed transmission, and the concept features independent rear suspension for more refined road manners.

The car sits on 21-inch chrome aluminum wheels fitted with unique Michelin tires that feature the Lincoln star in its treads.

“The Lincoln MKR concept is important because it marks a new era for the brand,” Horbury said. “This is a showcase of modern design that marries power, performance and, essentially, ‘guilt-free’ luxury.”

2007 Ford Transit XXL

(from Ford Motor Company Press Release) FORD TRANSIT XXL – PROBABLY THE LONGEST TRANSIT IN THE WORLD!

Dunton, England – 3 January 2007.
Ford of Europe's Commercial Vehicle development team, based at the company's Dunton Technical Centre in the UK, is celebrating the Ford Transit's status as International Van of the Year 2007, by creating an unusual one-off special – the Transit XXL.

2007 Ford Transit XXL2007 Ford Transit XXL 2 Transit XXL literally stretches the Transit Tourneo passenger vehicle to new lengths, and could well be the longest Ford Transit in the world!

Designed and built by the Transit team at Dunton as a special project, Transit XXL uses 'off the shelf' Ford Transit components throughout. It is based on two short wheel base Transit Tourneo models which have been meticulously joined together to deliver a bespoke limousine that carries the driver plus seven passengers in full 'first class' comfort.

Every passenger benefits from a leather-trimmed, seven-way fully adjustable Transit 'Captain's Seat' complete with heating, lumbar adjustment and armrest. As you would expect, legroom and shoulder room are extensive!

This one-off vehicle has been designed to further demonstrate the Ford Transit's flexibility and capabilities. It measures 7.4 metres in length and has a wheelbase of 5.9 metres. This compares to the standard Tourneo length of almost 4.9 metres and wheelbase of 2.9 metres.

Transit XXL also features four full sliding doors – two on each side – while the entire vehicle benefits from privacy glass allowing occupants to be transported in appropriate anonymity. The four opening side doors of the Transit XXL are complemented by the fact that it's a right hand drive van. When used in left hand drive countries, the Transit XXL driver can stop at the kerbside and be ready quickly to help passengers get in to or out of the vehicle – something that drivers of long limousine vehicles understand and appreciate.

The interior also features a fully fitted carpet made from the standard Tourneo item, and a floor to roof carpeted bulkhead behind the rearmost pair of seats which creates a separate luggage compartment accessible only through the tailgate-style rear door.

Passenger comfort is maximised through the use of front and rear air conditioning, with the rear being controlled via the passenger compartment making this literally the coolest Transit to travel in.

The team isn't finished yet, and has plans to install a full in-vehicle entertainment system, including DVD player and games consoles, with individual monitors.

Still a Transit at Heart

Transit XXL is powered by a completely standard Ford 2.2-litre, 130PS Duratorq TDCi engine, though the 5-speed gearbox has been specially adapted and tuned for optimum gearing to deliver enhanced mid-range performance. The braking system has also been upgraded and uses self-adjusting, servo-assisted front and rear discs. The body construction for Transit XXL features extensive strengthening under the floor and in the roof to ensure that the vehicle is torsionally rigid and safe. It has an unladen weight of 2500kg. Using an FT350 front wheel drive model, the suspension has been enhanced to give the necessary gross vehicle weight of 3500kg, enabling Transit XXL to be fully laden with passengers and their luggage

Finished in Frozen White, the Transit XXL retains many of its original standard features, including satellite navigation, Bluetooth® capability, top-of-the-range Ford audio equipment, heated front screen and – perhaps most importantly – reversing sensors.

"The Transit team spent a huge amount of their personal time putting together the Transit XXL, and we're delighted with the result," said Barry Gale, Ford of Europe's Chief Engineer for Commercial Vehicles. "It was a challenging project but the core vehicle's strengths and flexibility have helped the end result to be easy to drive and very comfortable to ride in.

"Ford has a history of building unusual one-off, fun vehicles that have become legends – the Transit Supervan series, our World Rally Transit and most recently the Transit Connect X-Press which used the powertrain of the Focus RS to create a hugely entertaining vehicle," said Gale. "Transit XXL takes us in a different direction as we wanted to show that the refinement of the new Transit allows it to be a limousine. One thing is for sure – it provokes amazing reactions from all who see it!"

2007 Hamann BMW 3 Series Coupe

(from Hamann Press Release) Sporty nuances: BMW 3 Series coupe from HAMANN

• Aerodynamic parts all around
• Power boosts for 325i, 330i, 330d and 335d
• Power boost to 380 bhp for 335i in preparation
• Four different wheel designs in 18 to 20 inch and lowered suspension
• Stylish interior with sports steering wheel, aluminum parts and carbon fiber

BMW 3 Series CoupeBMW 3 Series Coupe 2BMW 3 Series CoupeBMW’s trump card in the two-door sedan segment is the 3 Series coupe. This elegantly proportioned model lends itself perfectly to accentuating its sporty appeal by adding new details. HAMANN from Laupheim also shares this opinion and adorns the 3 Series coupe an aerodynamics kit, power boosts, new wheel rims and a stylish interior.

Power boosts for petrol engines and diesels

HAMANN boosts the power in this coupe by means of optimized curve maps. In other words, the electronic power boost is achieved by recalibrating the standard ECU.

The six-cylinder petrol engines 325i and 330i receive a boost of 13 bhp / 10 kW and 17 bhp / 12 kW and in both cases around 25 Nm torque. The top speed goes up to 250 and 265 km/h respectively (standard: 325i 245 km/h, 330i 250 km/h). In the 330i, the price includes the deactivation of the 250 km/h speed restriction.

Also when it comes to the diesel models, customers can expect a substantial power boost. In the 330d, 272 bhp / 200 kW, 259 km/h top speed (standard: 248) and 600 Nm at 2000 rpm are quite possible. In the top diesel model 335d 313 bhp/230 kW, 272 km/h and a more than generous 630 Nm at 2000 rpm.

A power boost to around 380 bhp for the 335i is currently in preparation.

By fitting a HAMANN 4-pipe sports rear muffler with four round tailpipes, the 335i and 335d can make their power public. The 4 stainless steel tailpipes, each 76 mm in diameter, make the rear end of this coupe look even more attractive.

Various power boosts

Still so young, and already its first facelift.... HAMANN does not do things by half and sets to work on the face. The new, sportier-looking HAMANN front spoiler is designed to be fitted onto the standard bumper. The visual lowering effect is created by the new side sills, which lend the side view more character. The vehicle’s back can either be customized with a HAMANN rear spoiler or a spoiler lip. A truly effective means of reducing the lift. The same effect is produced by the HAMANN roof spoiler, which sits on top of the vehicle. The rear center molding, which incorporates matching cutouts for the tailpipes, is designed to be used in conjunction with the HAMANN 4-pipe sports rear muffler. Fitting Carbon-Kevlar mirror caps lends the HAMANN 3 Series coupe a further eye-catching touch.

Wheels from 18 to 20 inch

HAMANN really goes to town when it comes to the wheels. No fewer than four different designs and three sizes from 18 to 20 inch make choosing difficult. The HM2 design, available in an 18 inch version, is a single-piece light alloy wheel with five spokes in the ‘Silver’ finish and features an outer rim with an INOX steel lip. The single-piece rim Anniversary I has a multi-spoke design and is also available in the ‘Silver’ finish and features an outer rim with an INOX steel lip. HAMANN offers it as an 18, 19 and 20 inch version. The PG3 wheel is a composite five-spoke wheel in silver with a high-gloss polished rim flange. Here, customers can choose between the sizes 19 and 20 inch.

Needless to say, 20 inch wheels suit the customized 3 Series coupe best. In this size, HAMANN offers its “Edition Race” design as its top model. The appearance of this three-piece, ultra-lightweight, forged rim in a cross-spoke design and with a black spider is characterized by the 9 main spokes, each of which branches outwards into 2 further spokes. In addition to the exciting design, the titanium bolts are a particularly eye-catching detail. The high-gloss rim flange adds the finishing touch to the stylish looks.

Typical wheel/tire combinations in 20 inch:
Edition Race: front 8.5 J x 20 / rear 10.0 J x 20 - 235/30 ZR 20 / 285/25 ZR 20
PG3: front and rear 8.5 J x 20 - 235/30 ZR 20
Anniversary I: front and rear 9.0 J x 20 235/30 ZR 20

By fitting a suspension lowering kit, comprising four progressive suspension struts, HAMANN succeeds in lowering the vehicle’s center of gravity by 35 mm at the front and by 20 mm at the rear. Even in vehicles that come with sporty suspension tuning, that’s still around 15mm.

Numerous accessories combine to make sitting inside the HAMANN 3 Series coupe all the more pleasurable. Thanks to the three-spoke HAMANN airbag sports steering wheel, the driver always has the reins securely in his hands. A sporty flair is added by the decorative carbon-fiber components, which HAMANN fits on the dashboard, center console, ashtray trim, doors, steering wheel, gearshift knob, handbrake lever and the
I-Drive-Controller. HAMANN adds further sporty nuances in the form of sport gearshift knobs (in aluminum or leather/aluminum), aluminum pedals, an aluminum handbrake lever and an aluminum footrest. An exclusive set of floor mats sporting the HAMANN logo in silver rounds off the interior offering.

Needless to say, HAMANN will customize every 3 Series to a customer’s own specific requirements. By way of illustration, luxurious leather upholsteries in various colors are possible, as are extensive multimedia conversions featuring a DVD player, TV reception and a PlayStation.

Lexus IS-F: Leaked images

A "leaked" animated advert for the Lexus IS-F gives us a first glimpse at the future ultra-sporty saloon from Lexus.
The photos are very grainy, when resized, but you can see that the exterior is going to receive pretty sober modifications, compared to a plain vanilla IS: a new front apron, new side skirts and probably some aerodynamic mods to the rear too.

Lexus IS-FLexus IS-F 2What's more interesting are the texts accompanying the ad:

- "more than 400 hp"
- "5.0 liter V8"
- "0-60 in under 5 seconds"
- "It will change the way you think about Lexus".
