The public in Geneva will also be able to admire the extraordinary Grande Punto Abarth S2000. This is a racing car designed for racing stables, which the Fiat Racing Department will be entering in the 2007 Italian Rally Championship with Giandomenico Basso and his navigator Mitia Dotta. Davide Gatti, winner of the 2006 Fiat Abarth International Trophy, will compete at the wheel of an official Fiat Grande Punto R3D with a diesel engine. On the international scene, the Grande Punto Abarth S2000 will compete in the IRC (Intercontinental Rally Challenge) with drivers Andrea Navarra, his navigator Guido D’Amore, and young Umberto Scandola and Anton Alen.

The Abarth & C. Spa racing team will be managed by Claudio Berro.

Powered by a 2000 cc aspirated engine that delivers 270 bhp, with 4-wheel drive, the new Grande Punto Abarth S2000 is heir to the version that took the 2006 Italian Rally Championship title with Paolo Andreucci and Anna Andreussi, winning 7 of the 11 races on the programme. Nor must we forget the excellent season of their team-mates Andrea Navarra and Guido D’Amore who took third place. Giandomenico Basso and Mitia Dotta won the European title and the International Rally Challenge.

Since its debut last season, the racing version has proved unbeatable, whatever the type of route or terrain. And we must underline that the 15 cars built so far have been ordered by several racing stables in Europe and elsewhere, to compete in domestic and international rallies. 530-HP Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera Debuts

SANT'AGATA BOLOGNESE, Italy — Lamborghini has taken the wraps off its new range-topping Gallardo Superleggera, which kicks up the Gallardo a notch by adding 10 horses and subtracting 220 pounds in weight. Purists will note that the weight reduction of the car for the U.S. is 154 pounds, according to the Italian supercar maker.

The car hits the market in March after debuting at the Geneva auto show, where Lamborghini will start taking orders. Without specifying production numbers, Lamborghini said the Superleggera model will be restricted to lower numbers than the standard Gallardo.

Lamborghini boasts that the Superleggera has the "fastest acceleration in its class." The weight/power ratio of the Gallardo Superleggera is only 5.5 pounds/horsepower. The 530-hp 5.0-liter V10 rockets from zero to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds, 0.2 seconds less than the basic Gallardo. It includes a standard robotized mechanical "e-gear" gearbox that "guarantees shifting without removing hands from the steering wheel."

Lamborghini stripped off the excess weight through such tactics as constructing an engine hood of visible carbon fiber and transparent polycarbonate, which it notes "also shows off the magnificent V10." Weight was also reduced by replacing some glass surfaces with transparent polycarbonate.

Other details include a sport package with shock absorbers and a suede-covered steering wheel. A rear video camera, a carbon accessories kit and a navigation system with CD changer are also on the options list.

New Volkswagen Golf Estate

Amid the supercoupes and ketamine-fuelled concepts of the Geneva show, there'll be a healthy dose of practicality present in the shape of the new Volkswagen Golf Estate.

Although VW is highlighting the estate's revised front end and dynamic lines, it's a unapologetically practical station wagon.

With a low-loading boot lip, roof rails and fold-flat rear seats, bootspace stands at a whopping 1,550 litres - the largest loadspace of any Golf to date.

Volkswagen's tried-and-tested 1.9- and 2.0-litre turbodiesels join a brace of petrol engines - a 1.4-litre TSI and 1.6-litre FSI - from the Golf hatchback.

The smaller petrol is actually the more powerful variant, and comes with the option of a DSG gearbox instead of the standard six-speed manual shifter.

The Golf Estate goes on sale this summer in the UK, with prices to be confirmed nearer to the time.

The apollo sport is the rebel amongst the super sport cars. Its bodywork combines sexy curves with potent edges and angles and aims for uncompromising aerodynamics. A clear demonstration of the principle form follows function. Its challenging sporting design derives from the requirement to built a street legal racing car, whose number one priority is to provide extraordinary performance on the circuit, but at the same time embodying a vehicle suitable for daily use.

The highest importance was attached to safety: the tubular space frame in chrome-molybdenum steel with integrated safety monocoque fabricated in carbon-fiber passes all crash-tests regulations, while a cashbox offers additional protection. The gaping air intake stub over the roof and on the rear signals power, dynamics and superiority. The eight cylinder, bi-turbo mid-engine with up to 800 horsepower is capable of catapulting this 1200 kg missile from 0-100 km/h in only 3 seconds.

The apollo sport is equipped with an extended aerodynamic package and, in contrast to the three part spoiler of the apollo, possesses a racing wing which gives even more down force and pushes the spolloss maximum speed up to 360 km/h.

As you can guess, it is not for nothing that this cars is named after the fierce Greek God.

The two-seater also convinces from the inside, with its sporty and elegant alcantara interior, and offers air-condition, CD-player, navigation system and reverse view camera as standard equipment. A two-layer metallic finish available in any conceivable color, gives this bolide a particular luster. As a special accessory the apollo is equipped with an airjack, a pneumatic jacking pad.

The standard version of the apollo sport costs 299.500,- plus VAT.

Toyota Will Build Highlander at New Mississippi Plant

TOKYO — To keep pace with booming demand in the U.S., Toyota Motor Corp. said on Tuesday that it has selected Blue Springs, Mississippi, as the site of its eighth North American vehicle production plant. The new plant will produce 150,000 Highlander SUVs per year when it opens in 2010.

Toyota said plans call for an investment of $1.3 billion and the creation of about 2,000 new jobs in Blue Springs. It said the additional plant will bring Toyota's North American annual production capacity to 2.17 million vehicles.

The new plant helps Toyota accomplish several goals. First, it helps the automaker boost output to meet growing U.S. demand. Toyota imported 46 percent of the units it sold in the U.S last year. The new plant also helps the Japanese automaker reduce foreign-sourced vehicles, which it fears may trigger a political backlash, especially as domestic manufacturers scramble to shutter plants and lay off workers in the wake of declining North American sales. Toyota may claim the title of the world's biggest automaker from General Motors this year.

According to some estimates, Toyota will need to add one U.S. plant per year at its current rate of growth.

Near Tupelo, Mississippi, there were 144 people living in Blue Springs at the time of the 2000 U.S. census. Mississippi is also home to a Nissan vehicle plant, as the trend continues for the Southern states to be the new locus of activity for auto production in the U.S.

Vauxhall VXR8

Like the distant cries from the mad uncle locked in the attic, we hear that Vauxhall has another barmy Aussie motor on the way, just waiting to howl at the moon.

The Antipodean is called the VXR8, so it won't take a forensic scientist to work out that there's a big old V8 lurking under the bonnet.

It's the same 6.0-litre 420bhp monster that we last saw in the end-of-line Monaro VXRs, and in this VXR8 saloon, this is enough to see off 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds, although there's no word on top speed as yet.

Sticking with rear-wheel drive, the VXR8 comes with either a six-speed manual gearbox or, included for the first time, a five-speed auto.

The auto attracts a £1,400 premium, but when the VXR8 costs only £34,995, we reckon you can afford to indulge in a few extras when the car goes on sale in July.

Italdesign Giugiaro Vadho Concept Makes Hydrogen Steamy

TURIN, Italy — Italdesign will be pushing the alternative-fuel message at next week's Geneva auto show with the unveiling of a futuristic-looking, hydrogen-powered concept car called the Vadho.

Based around a unique chassis developed in-house at Italdesign's Turin-based headquarters in Italy, it moves well away from the retro themes explored on the company's last concept car, the Giugiaro Mustang, adopting distinct aeronautic-inspired styling cues, including seating for two within a tandem cockpit fashioned in a teardrop shape down one side of the upper body.

The car to be shown in Geneva is described as having left-hand drive. However, the use of compact drive-by-wire control systems is claimed to mean the Vadho can easily be adapted to right-hand drive. The Vadho does away with a traditional steering wheel in favor of two joystick controls. Power, meanwhile, comes by way of a hydrogen-fueled engine positioned at the rear next to the passenger.

Conceived to highlight the need for ecological propulsion, the Vadho also marks the debut of Italdesign's new corporate logo: a large G in the company's corporate shade of red.

2007 Abarth Grande Punto Preview

(from Fiat Press Release) A great project will be launched at the 77th Geneva International Motor Show: the rebirth of one of the most prestigious brands in world motorsports. Its symbol is a scorpion, and its name is Abarth.

Abarth has always been synonymous with assertive cars, competitiveness, passion and excitement, and it now returns with a new range that will appeal to all lovers of motorsports. Abarth’s first interpretation of the Grande Punto will be on the “catwalk” at the Geneva Show, the first step in an initiative which will later involve other models.

This new adventure starts in the familiar, uniquely emotional context and exclusive setting of the Geneva Motor Show. A striking stand has been prepared, in line with the philosophy of Abarth’s rebirth, an innovative space with a fresh, contemporary, technological language and great attention to every detail. The new elements that will publicise the Abarth brand are displayed with all their strong, original personality: the revamped version of the famous Abarth racing stripe has been rendered with LED tiles, while the new logo, the scorpion and the wording are all large, three-dimensional elements in polished, satin-effect aluminium.

The Abarth values and tradition on the other hand are underlined discreetly and technologically: refined materials and precious finishing details in aluminium, carbon fibre, enamel and lacquer decorate the exhibition area, and draw attention to the true stars of the stand: the Grande Punto Abarth S2000, a car that has been type-approved for racing and is proving to be highly successful, and the Grande Punto Abarth Preview, a concept car making its world debut.

These are the two souls of the Abarth world: racing and standard production.

Visitors to the Geneva Show will also have an opportunity to discover a third field in which the brand operates; a multimedia configurator will illustrate the whole concept of the ‘Abarth Kit’, and the flexibility and wide range of combinations that the brand will offer customers in its conversion kits. Some of these solid wooden boxes, inlaid with satin-finished aluminium trims, are on display inside glass cubes, with the historic mechanical and stylistic components from the conversion kits.

And finally, by means of exclusive LED technology and plasma screens, the walls of the stand propose historical photographs and films, alternating them with a reproduction of the new Abarth racing stripe, underlining the fine link between the past and the future, as well as the energy and personality that are inherent in the Abarth brand.

The Grande Punto Abarth Preview

The absolute star of the stand is the Grande Punto Abarth Preview, a true jewel of assertiveness and elegance. The car will be marketed in September, to enhance the sporty, youthful positioning of the Grande Punto.

The car on show in Geneva is equipped with a 1.4 Turbo petrol engine that delivers 150 bhp at 5500 rpm, boosted to 155 bhp by the adoption of 98 RON petrol. What is more, thanks to a booster kit, a version with twice as much power as the basic version (180 bhp) will soon be available. This is a revival of a tradition from the past: for example, the Fiat 500 of 1958 delivered 13 bhp at 4000 rpm with a top speed of 85 km/h, while the Fiat 500 Abarth of the same year delivered 26 bhp at 5000 rpm and a top speed of 118 km/h.

The Grande Punto Abarth aims to revive the feats of these entertaining performance cars, offering young drivers in particular an opportunity to enter the racing world in complete safety and at an accessible price.

DaimlerChrysler Hooks Up With China's Chery To Sell Small Cars in U.S.

STUTTGART, Germany — In a major step toward adding fuel-efficient cars to halt declining sales in the U.S., DaimlerChrysler on Tuesday said the Chrysler Group is about to sign off on a deal to supply Chery-built vehicles in North America and Western Europe. The vehicles will be distributed under the Chrysler brands according to the limited partnership agreement.
The vehicles that Chery makes are expected to be new models. Specific products and production volumes were not announced. However, Chrysler signed a letter of intent in late December to buy China-made subcompact cars from Chery to sell in the U.S. under the Dodge brand, starting in 2009. DaimlerChrysler said it had approved the "framework" of a limited partnership on Tuesday to develop small vehicles between the Chrysler Group and Chery.

In a statement, Chrysler Group said the partnership will "allow the company to become a bigger player on the global automotive stage by giving it access to products in new segments more quickly, with less capital spending." The move will allow Chrysler Group to take advantage of China's low-cost manufacturing.

DaimlerChrysler said the deal is contingent upon the approval of the Chinese government. The two companies are expected to sign off on the deal in late March.

Until November, Chery had been working with entrepreneur Malcolm Bricklin to build vehicles for Visionary Vehicles LLC.

Ford Mondeo

Once upon a time, a new family car from Ford would simultaneously attract the biggest fanfare, and the biggest yawns.

Now, thanks to its appearance in the recent James Bond flick, the new Mondeo's film star looks have earned it a most triumphant fanfare.

The price of the new Mondeo is more Holyhead than Hollywood, however, and will kick off at £14,995 for the petrol 1.6-litre Edge five-door model.

There are the usual saloon, hatch and estate bodies, and four trims covering Edge, Zetec, Ghia and Titanium.

Order books open in March for the new vehicle, and deliveries are expected to begin in June.

Fiat Bravo Takes a Bow in Solo Performance

GENEVA — Next week at the Geneva auto show, the Fiat stand will be devoted in its entirety to the 10 models that make up the Bravo lineup. The company hopes this move will maximize the effect of the show debut for the new model.

There will be engine variants from a 150-horsepower 1.4-liter gasoline engine to a 150-hp 1.9-liter Multijet diesel, a wide range of equipment levels, trim options and custom choices, and all kinds of enticingly named colors like Maranello Red, Maserati Blue, Provocative Black and so on.

This is not an unprecedented move for media days. A couple of years ago, Rover showed two prototypes of a forthcoming Mini replacement to journalists, but by the time the general public arrived, the stand had been rearranged and the one-off cars disappeared.

Fiat will also change the layout when the Geneva show opens to public scrutiny. Then the whole Fiat lineup will be presented, including the 100-hp Panda, the highly popular Sedici and the quirky Croma.

Also, the Geneva show will be the first opportunity for the Italian carmaker to show off its new logo.

F&M Antas Ready for Its Close-Up

MONTE CARLO, Monaco — Faralli and Mazzanti, otherwise known as F&M, will unveil the production version of its classic-look Antas V8 sports car at the exclusive and high-profile Top Marques show in Monaco this year. The Italians also showed the Antas here last April, as a one-off.

The name Antas means "Eagle" in the Etruscan language. The sports car was conceived two years ago by the team of classic car restorers whose usual work is returning legendary Italian sports cars from marques like Cisitalia and Maserati to their former glory.

The Antas features styling cues from such classic icons as the Bugatti 57, Talbot-Lago, and 1950s Maseratis, but will have a more muscular look. It means that there will be new carbon-fiber body parts and carefully chosen sporty wheels and tires.

The Antas retains its Maserati-sourced 310-horsepower V8 engine that is straight from a 1960s Maserati.

2007 n2a Motors 789

The 789 gets its name from the melding of design cues from the 1957, 1958, and 1959 Chevrolet models. The headlights and nose are most similar to the 57 Chevy, while the mid-section and interior are much like the 58, and the rear and tailfins are styled after the 59.

The vehicle is built on a 2005-2007 Corvette C6 chassis, and shares the stock C6's 400 hp engine as well.

Lamborghini Spiga Concept

There have been a lot of body modifications for the Lamborghini Gallardo released, but none have been as sexy as the Spiga Concept. Created by Ugur Sahin, an automotive and industrial designer, the Spiga Concept has not been evaluated by Lamborghini, but perhaps it should be.
The Spiga is clearly based on the Lamborghini Gallardo, which the Author says “proved itself to be a top-notch design.”

The main characteristic of the car is that the rear and the middle flows in an harmonic way which kind of reminds the human muscles stretching to the back, as the front is slightly different than the rear, it also gives a sense of speed and movement forward when viewed form the side angles. The air intakes near the side windows are designed integrated on the body which also shows strong Lamborghini aspects.

Be sure and look at the rear of the car, which is one of its best modifications.

Mercedes-Benz Rolls Out First Four-Cylinder Bluetec Model

STUTTGART, Germany — With the worldwide debut of the four-cylinder Mercedes-Benz Vision C220 Bluetec concept at the upcoming Geneva auto show, the German automaker is expanding its clean diesel technology to the lower end of the market.

With the Vision C220 Bluetec, which is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission and a turbocharged four-cylinder power plant that delivers 170 horsepower and peak torque of 295 pound-feet, Mercedes-Benz has its eye on a wider portfolio of products in its Bluetec lineup. It said that the Vision C220 Bluetec gets 42.7 mpg on diesel fuel.

In a statement, the automaker said: "The [Bluetec] technology is currently being adapted to European market requirements and further Mercedes-Benz models, the aim being to also offer Bluetec in passenger cars for European customers, starting in 2008." For the U.S. market, the German automaker is offering three V6 Bluetec models — the GL-Class, M-Class and R-Class.

"With the Vision C220 Bluetec, Mercedes-Benz is providing a taste of things to come as part of its Bluetec initiative," the company said.

The Bluetec technology in the new concept includes an oxidizing catalytic converter, which reduces emissions of carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons, as well as a particulate filter.

Bizarre twist in TVR saga

Russian business tycoon Nikolai Smolensky has re-acquired the Blackpool-based sports car firm TVR.

Smolensky bought the assets of the company from the administrators, having sold them just before Christmas 2006 to avoid the hassle of redundancy payments.

Now, the firm is back in Smolensky's hands and it's thought he still wants to forge ahead with building a new range of cars.

However, the notorious plutocrat is considering taking the car's production abroad, possibly to Italy, where specialist coachbuilder Bertone would be responsible for building the vehicles.

The deal has been condemned by the Trade and General Workers' Union (T&G). "It's abysmal that the previous owner, who allowed the company to descend into administration, is now the owner once again," said a T&G spokesman.

DaimlerChrysler May Take Stake in General Motors

LONDON — DaimlerChrysler could take a minority stake in General Motors if GM elects to acquire the Chrysler Group, according to a report in the U.K. business paper Financial Times.

Word of the potential all-stock transaction filtered out of Europe over the weekend as industry analysts continued to question how to value Chrysler, which is in the process of yet another makeover and downsizing as it struggles to regain profitability.

Meanwhile, Russian automaker GAZ became the latest firm to deny an interest in acquiring Chrysler from its German parent. GAZ was responding to a German press report over the weekend linking the two companies. So far, rumored bidders from China and India have kept quiet.

Since DaimlerChrysler announced more than a week ago that "all options are on the table" regarding the disposition of Chrysler, there has been intense media and industry speculation about the U.S. company's fate. Among the options said to be under discussion are a possible spin-off or a sale to one or more private-equity firms.

It is unclear what value, if any, ultimately will be assigned to Chrysler. The stock market values of its larger U.S. counterparts, Ford Motor Company and GM, are $15.6 billion and $19.5 billion, respectively.

DaimlerChrysler is said to be asking around $13 billion for Chrysler, but analysts suggest the U.S. company could be worth far less, especially in light of its heavy pension and health-care liabilities, which are said to total more than $16 billion. Published outside estimates of the company's value range from $5 billion to $10 billion.

Analysts note that the right buyer — perhaps one of China's larger state-owned manufacturers — might be willing to pay a premium to gain access to Chrysler's platform and powertrain technology, its brands and its North American dealer network.

Chrysler's potential value to GM seems far less evident. There is almost a complete product and brand overlap between the two companies, and GM certainly doesn't need Chrysler's powertrains, its plants or its unfunded pension and health-care liabilities.

Nissan Partners With Renault and Mahindra on India Plant

CHENNAI, India — Japanese automaker Nissan Motor will team with its French parent Renault and local carmaker Mahindra & Mahindra to build a $900 million assembly plant that will be one of the largest in India.

When the plant opens in late 2009, it will have the capacity to build 400,000 vehicles a year. To be located in the South, near similar facilities operated by Ford and Hyundai, the new factory will assemble versions of the Renault Logan compact and a new Mahindra utility vehicle, as well as unspecified models for all three brands.

Mahindra, which will control 50 percent of the venture, is a former partner of Ford in India. It builds a range of utility vehicles and passenger cars. An independent distributor is planning to import and market the Mahindra Scorpio in the United States in 2008.

In India, Renault vehicles will be sold through Mahindra's domestic sales channel, while Nissan will operate a separate distribution network. Late last year, Nissan walked away from a proposed deal in India in which it would have partnered with fellow Japanese manufacturer Suzuki, which controls India's largest automaker, Maruti.

GTM 40TR

Like all good 40 year olds, GTM is rallying against the inevitable descent into old age. And there's no better way of assuaging such horror than with a track day sports car that'll see off 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds and top 150mph.

The 40TR, which stands for 'track and road', uses a turbocharged version of Honda's 2.0-litre VTEC engine from the Civic Type-R and produces more than 300bhp.

A one-off race series is in the pipeline, but if you fancy a GTM 40TR for yourself, they're on sale from May and are expected to cost from £14,000 as a kit of parts for you to build yourself.

Honda F1 Team Embraces Environmental Issues With New Green Look

LONDON — A striking, green-themed livery for Honda's Formula 1 racing cars was unveiled today at the Natural History Museum here, launching the company's effort to raise awareness of environmental issues.

It's quite a turnabout for the team, formerly sponsored by British American Tobacco's Lucky Strike cigarette brand. Honda is one of the leaders among automobile manufacturers in exploring alternative technology for transportation purposes, and this endeavor carries that theme to motor racing.

It fits in with F1's own long-range plan to use Grand Prix racing as a proving ground for innovations that not only make racing cars go faster, but also make them more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

"Climate change is probably the single biggest issue facing the global community, and F1 is not immune from it," said Nick Fry, chief executive officer of Honda Racing F1. "On the contrary, we believe that F1 with its huge global profile and cutting-edge technology can play an important role in not only highlighting the issues but also playing our part in developing solutions."

Universal Music and Gatorade are joining Honda as partners. Jenson Button of Great Britain and Rubens Barrichello of Brazil are the drivers.

GM's Street-Fighting Transformer Vehicles Rev Up

DETROIT — Until now, moviegoers only got a quick glimpse of the Chevrolet Camaro that stars in Paramount's upcoming Transformers movie via a trailer that hit theaters late last year. The brief clip also offers teaser images of the GMC TopKick truck, Hummer H2 and Pontiac Solstice that will star in what is likely to be the blockbuster film of the summer.

But General Motors took the edge off this weekend, releasing several images of its four Transformer vehicles. The Chevrolet Camaro is undoubtedly the über-Transformer, dubbed "Bumblebee," a major character in the saga of aliens who take mechanical forms when on earth. GM said it will "roll out a fully integrated marketing and promotional effort around the film in the near future, including a major Chevrolet promotion."

Insiders say this effort may include specially badged vehicles to commemorate the film, as well as the usual line of toys, posters and other movie-related accessories.

GM vehicles are not merely static displays in Transformers. They are clearly embedded in the story line. "Autobot Jazz" converts from a hardtop Pontiac Solstice. "Autobot Ratchet" is a Hummer H2 that has been modified to serve as a rescue vehicle. "Ironhide" changes from a GMC TopKick medium-duty truck.

The movie will hit theaters July 4.

EPA Issues "More Realistic" Mileage Ratings

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has posted new fuel economy ratings for vehicles from the 2007 model year and earlier using new calculations it says are more realistic and reflect real-world mileage.

As anticipated, many larger vehicles, such as the Hummer H3, as well as gas-electric hybrid vehicles, are seeing mileage declines under the new system. The 2007 H3 four-wheel-drive model with an automatic transmission gets new numbers of 14 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway versus 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway under the old system. Toyota's Prius hybrid saw a dramatic decline, too. Under the new system, the 2007 Prius gets 48 mpg in city driving and 45 mpg on the highway. Previously, the EPA said the Prius returned 60 mpg in city driving and 51 mpg on the highway. Toyota noted that mileage ratings for competing vehicles will drop, too.

Tables that list the new ratings compared with those for previous years can be found at www.fueleconomy.gov. Window stickers reflecting the new fuel economy tests will be required on 2008 models.

The EPA explains that its new system — the first change since 1984 — factors in such variables as higher speed and greater use of air-conditioning.

New Audi A5 Coupe

Following a slightly embarrassing photographic leak this week, Audi has released full details of its new A5 coupe well in advance of its Geneva debut.

The information confirms what we suspected - that the A5 will firmly target the BMW 3-Series Coupe when it goes on sale this March.

Based on a brand new Audi platform, the A5 will share most of its underpinnings with the new A4, which should arrive at the end of this year.

Although Audi is hailing the A5 as a bold step to its future styling direction, we can't help feeling a bit underwhelmed by its looks.

When Audi launched the original TT, it felt like a car that could change the world, but the design of the A5 just seems derivative and uninspired.

Those unchallenging looks should mask some pretty serious performance, though. Top of the range will be the S5 - the car in the bottom two photos - with a naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 delivering 354bhp.

With a six-speed manual 'box putting the power through all four wheels, that's enough to propel it to 62mph in a fraction over five seconds, which definitely puts the S5 in BMW M3 league.

The S5 gets a few cosmetic pointers too, with 18-inch alloys, a quad exhaust and boot lid spoiler, as well as exaggerated door-sill trims.

Until a 170bhp 1.8 TFSI option arrives in the autumn, the only other petrol engine available to the standard A5 will be a 3.2-litre FSI.

A slightly more powerful variation of the V6 found in the current A4, it develops 265bhp and - mated to a six-speed manual 'box - will dispatch 62mph in 6.1 seconds.

Two V6 turbodiesels - a 2.7- and 3.0-litre - complete the engine line-up. The bigger diesel gets a manual 'box and all-wheel drive, while the smaller unit has to make do with front-wheel drive and the option of Audi's Multitronic auto 'box.

Audi will be taking orders for the A5 when it's officially unveiled at the Geneva motor show.

Prices haven't been confirmed yet, but our Audi source said the A5 should start at around £30,000 with the first orders reaching our shores in June.

Honda Crossroad Launched in Japan

TOKYO — Honda's new seven-passenger Crossroad began reaching Japanese dealerships this week. The big question is whether this rugged compact crossover will head across the Pacific to eager American consumers.

Built on Civic underpinnings, the Crossroad is a new type of vehicle for Honda, with rugged, almost boxy sport-utility vehicle styling cues on the outside and three rows of seats. Honda describes the vehicle as an "active life navigator" that combines the functionality of an SUV with the roominess of a minivan.

In Japan, the Crossroad is being offered with a choice of 1.8- or 2.0-liter VTEC four-cylinder engines, mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment includes on-demand four-wheel drive with antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and hill-start assist. Other features include adaptive cruise control and a new collision mitigation system that sends audio and visual warnings to the driver, then applies the brakes to help avoid a rear-end collision with a vehicle ahead.

TechArt Porsche GTstreet

GENEVA — German tuner TechArt continues to evolve its variations on the classic Porsche 911 Turbo. Its latest endeavor, called GTstreet, will make its debut at the Geneva auto show.

TechArt conjured up a GTstreet edition of the previous-generation 911 Turbo in 2001. The most recent iteration, based on the 997 body, takes Porsche's legendary twin-turbo 3.6-liter flat-6 engine and squeezes out 630 horsepower (up from 480 hp) and 605 pound-feet of torque (up from 457 lb-ft).

The boost in output results in breathtaking performance figures: 0-60-mph acceleration in less than 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 214 mph.

TechArt also provides a full aero body kit for the GTstreet, and the usual interior modifications.

A special occasion warrants a special means of transportation: For the Academy Awards Ceremony 2007 GeigerCars.de (www.GeigerCars.de) built the exclusive STAR FORCE VIP shuttle, based on the latest Cadillac Escalade ESV. The STAR FORCE was commissioned by the German TV network ProSieben.

The American SUV was completely reworked by the tuning specialists from GeigerCars.de. The 403-hp / 296-kW 6.2-liter V8 engine gains an additional 20 horsepower with the GeigerCars.de stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system.

On the outside the upgraded Cadillac is an instant eye catcher with its large 10Jx24 chrome wheels and size 305/35 ZR 24 Pirelli Scorpion tires. In addition the ride height was lowered by 100 millimeters and the body was painted in a special ProSieben STAR FORCE color scheme. Bright STAR FORCE LED stars adorn the exclusive VIP shuttle at night. The front received a new and even more commanding chrome grille. But that’s not all: ProSieben TV host Annemarie Warnkross served as the model for the imposing gold-plated hood ornament.

The interior also features an especially exclusive design: The red and black leather seats with STAR FORCE logo are custom-made by GeigerCars.de as is the rear partition wall with retractable glass pane. A Toshiba LCD projector can beam the images of either digital TV broadcasts or a DVD onto the glass pane coated with a special holographic projection surface foil. The accompanying sound comes from a Hi-Fi system with more than 1,000 watts of power and loudspeakers and subwoofer custom-calibrated to the Escalade’s interior.

To provide the two rear passengers with maximum of legroom the body specialists from GeigerCars.de modified the floorpan of the Cadillac. The seats are upholstered with the finest leather sporting the ProSieben colors red and black, and offer maximum seating comfort. The sideboard mounted behind the partition wall comes with an innovative feature: At the push of a button it glides rearward to present the rear occupants with drinks or appetizers.

The GeigerCars.de designers further equipped the black 4x4 with a gigantic Webasto power folding roof over the rear seats to let the VIP guests enjoy the California sun.

Immediately after completion the GeigerCars.de STAR FORCE VIP shuttle was flown to Los Angeles for the Academy Awards Ceremony on February 25, 2007. There ProSieben will use it for its coverage of the world’s most important motion picture award.

Mercedes-Benz Rolls Out New 517-HP Pullman State Limo, for Potentates With Panache

STUTTGART, Germany — Monarchs and heads of state — or those with bank accounts approaching monarchical levels — will soon be able to step into the latest Mercedes-Benz limo, the S600 Guard Pullman, a behemoth that puts a premium on personal protection.

The new armored Pullman limousine is based on the long version of the S600 with a "substantially extended wheelbase length," said the German automaker. Among its unique selling points: Its armor resists military-standard small-arms projectiles and provides protection against fragments from hand grenades and other explosive devices. Standard features include run-flat tires, a self-sealing fuel tank and a fire-extinguishing system.

The Pullman is powered by a 12-cylinder biturbo engine with a displacement of 5,513cc and an output of 517 horses and peak torque of 612 pound-feet. The automaker said options include a choice of paint finishes, leathers and woods. "Even the most unusual of customer requests can be met," Mercedes-Benz said in a statement. The limo is designed to hold four passengers in the rear and has a rear entrance with increased headroom.

The nameplate is derived from Pullman railroad sleeping cars.

Auto Watchdog Group Calls for Investigation of Pontiac GTO

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Center for Auto Safety has called on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to open an investigation into tire failures and front suspension problems with the 2004-'06 Pontiac GTO.

The independent consumer advocacy group said NHTSA has received 65 tire-related complaints on the 2004-'06 GTO, including eight blowouts and one crash. It noted that, "The problem seems to occur early in the lifespan of the vehicle, as a number of complaints cite mileages of less than 10,000 at the time of the failure." Tire wear caused by contact with struts is cited as a possible source of the failures.

The 2004-'06 GTO was built by GM subsidiary Holden in Australia and based on the Holden Monaro platform. The auto watchdog points out that the tires on the U.S. GTO are 10mm wider than those fitted on the Australian Monaro. Redesigned front struts on the '06 GTO alleviated the tire wear problem. However, NHTSA has received more than 100 complaints of front strut failure in 2006 models, the Center for Auto Safety said.

It added that "Many GTO owners are forced to replace worn tires and damaged struts at their own expense."

Peugeot 407 SW Sport XS

An oil-burning estate might seem an unusual target for a sports upgrade, particularly in a range containing a V6 GT Coupe, but Peugeot has given its 407 Station Wagon the body kit treatment.

The Sport XS trim is an option for the 2.2-litre HDi 170 SW, and includes front and rear spoilers, a mesh grill and twin sports exhaust.

Peugeot will also throw in 15-spoke 18-inch alloys and half-leather upholstery.

There's no performance upgrade to match the looks, though, with the Sport XS retaining the standard 170bhp diesel burner.

Prices start at £23,995, a £1,500 hike over the equivalent base model.

Land Rover Recalls 33,000 Freelander SUVs

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Land Rover is recalling 33,000 Freelander SUVs in the U.S. to fix a faulty brake light switch. All Freelanders built at the company's Solihull, U.K., plant between September 2001 and May 2005 could be affected.

In a posting on its Web site, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the brake lights on some 2002-'05 models stay illuminated even when the brake pedal is not depressed. Warning lights for hill descent control, traction control and cruise control could also light up.

Land Rover dealers have been instructed to install new switches of the same design in March and then to replace them in May when a re-engineered unit becomes available.

2007 Geneva Auto Show Preview: Volvo V70 and XC70

GENEVA — Continuing its rolling launch of new and redesigned products, Volvo will formally introduce all-new versions of its V70 and XC70 wagons at the Geneva auto show.

The company earlier this year released an image and preliminary details on the new V70, which goes on sale this fall in North America.

A range of five- and six-cylinder gas and diesel engines will be offered in both models. Volvo said a 235-horsepower 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine will be a new option in the V70; it's also expected to be offered in the XC70, the more rugged version of the standard wagon. A high-performance V8 is also rumored.

The new V70 is longer, wider and taller than its predecessor and rides on a longer wheelbase for improved ride comfort. There is more cargo space and a wider tailgate, as well as 40/20/40-split-folding rear seats. The XC70 adds all-wheel drive with higher ground clearance.

Chrysler Rumor Mill Reaches a Fever Pitch

DETROIT — Even as Chrysler Group CEO Thomas LaSorda sought to soothe the company's uneasy employees via e-mail, media speculation over the ultimate fate of Chrysler reached a frenzied pitch on Friday.

Volkswagen was the latest multinational carmaker to deny an interest in acquiring the ailing U.S. auto group from parent DaimlerChrysler. DCX Chairman Dieter Zetsche triggered the initial spate of publicity with his announcement that the company would pursue "all options" in response to Chrysler's financial skid, including a spin-off or sale.

In Europe, the Financial Times reported that at least four private-equity groups are holding preliminary talks to buy Chrysler. Reports in Europe say DaimlerChrysler's asking price is 10 billion euros — about U.S.$13 billion.

Among the U.S. private-equity groups said to be in discussions with DaimlerChrysler are Apollo Management, Blackstone Group, Carlyle Group and Cerberus Capital Management. The auto unit of Cerberus is run by David Thursfield, an auto-industry veteran who once ran Ford's European operations.

VW joined a string of corporate deniers that now includes Fiat, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Renault-Nissan. In response to press speculation, all have said they have no interest in acquiring Chrysler, which posted an operating loss of $1.5 billion in 2006.

Press pundits also suggested that one or more state-owned Chinese automakers could be preparing to make a bid for Chrysler. Prospective bidders could include First Auto and Shanghai Auto, the country's two largest carmakers.

Another oft-rumored suitor, General Motors, has declined to comment on media speculation that it has discussed a possible platform-sharing arrangement with Chrysler, similar to the deal under which Chrysler next year will provide VW with a version of its redesigned 2008 Town & Country minivan.

In Detroit, LaSorda has sought to reassure nervous employees and dealers with a series of e-mails and conference calls, according to local press reports.

Chrysler began sending out terms of its latest early-retirement and buyout packages, which aim to cut 13,000 blue- and white-collar workers from the payroll. The initial package, which is being presented only to salaried non-union employees, offers early-retirement incentives to workers as young as 53. Chrysler hopes to eliminate 1,000 white-collar jobs by June and another 1,000 by 2008. The company's contract with the United Auto Workers expires later this year.

LaSorda told employees that a potential deal to sell or spin off Chrysler could take "months" rather than weeks to negotiate.

Jeep Compass

Jeep has released a front-wheel-drive model.
The Compass, which goes on sale in the UK in May, is Jeep's softest SUV yet.

It comes equipped with what Jeep is calling Freedom Drive - a four-wheel-drive system that directs power through the front wheels for 90 per cent of the time, only switching to all-wheel drive when things get really slippery.

Remarkably similar to the Intelligent Four-Wheel-Drive system on the new Vauxhall Antara, Freedom Drive promises hatchback-like handling and better economy.

Indeed, Jeep reckons that the Compass will return 43mpg - a heady statistic for the brawny American firm.

The Compass shares a platform with the upcoming Jeep Patriot, and is available with a VW-sourced 2.0-litre six-speed manual diesel engine or 2.4-litre petrol unit with a five-speed manual or auto 'box.

Prices start at £17,990.

Hyundai i30 Images

SEOUL, S. Korea — Hyundai had planned to officially unveil its new European compact, code-named FD, on the eve of the Geneva auto show in early March. But the "official" images of the car, to be christened i30, began flooding Web sites across Europe on Wednesday.
The i30 (the name previously was used in North America by Infiniti) is a companion to the Kia Cee'd. It was first displayed in concept form at last fall's Paris show, sporting the difficult-to-pronounce badge Arnejs.

Like the Cee'd, the i30 is a five-door hatchback; both share some basic architectural elements with the Hyundai Elantra. At the moment, Hyundai has no plans to market the i30 in North America.

Renault Rolls Out Orange-Flavored Scenic Conquest

PARIS — Maybe they should have called it "Orange Crush." Renault said it will unveil its off-roader Scenic Conquest, a car that is top-heavy with orange inside and out, for the first time at the upcoming Geneva auto show. The Scenic Conquest goes on sale in Europe in June.

The Scenic Conquest differs from the rest of Renault's Scenic range with its extra 20mm (roughly 3/4 of an inch) of ground clearance, twin skid plates and a suspension that has been modified to take on rough terrain. Outdoorsy extras include an interior bike rack, guards for the door and trunk sills and more storage units.

The Scenic Conquest gets exclusive "Cayenne Orange" exterior paint, as well as orange cabin graphics, orange seatbelts and orange stitching. The lower part of the front bumper has a black graphic coating, and the sides are protected with chunky rubber strips.

Engine choices include a 2.0-liter gas engine that develops 132 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 141 pound-feet of torque at 3,750 rpm. It is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. There is also a 1.9-liter diesel engine that delivers 129 hp at 4,000 rpm and 221 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. It is coupled to a six-speed transmission.

Renault said two additional engines will be available in certain markets. They include a 1.6-liter gas engine that develops 110 hp at 6,000 rpm and 112 lb-ft of torque at 4,250 rpm, and a 105-hp version of Renault's 1.5-liter diesel that generates peak power at 4,000 rpm and 177 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. Engines are mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

The Renault Scenic is roughly the size of a Toyota RAV4.

Brabus Smart Fortwo

GENEVA — Mercedes tuning specialist Brabus, as part of its annual Geneva auto show display, will unveil two new performance variants of the recently redesigned Smart Fortwo.

The 1.0-liter three-cylinder gas engine in the Fortwo Brabus and Fortwo Brabus Xclusive gets a 30 percent boost in output to 98 horsepower, which enables 0-60-mph acceleration in less than 10 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 96 mph.

Brabus also has firmed up and lowered the suspension system to give the Fortwo a sportier ride with better handling. Monoblock VI alloy wheels and a sport exhaust system have been fitted. Other exterior modifications include foglamps and wider rear wheel arches. In addition, the Xclusive edition gets a front spoiler, rear apron, side skirts and tinted-glass headlamps.

The cabin receives a Brabus gearshift knob, handbrake handle and pedals, as well as signature tach, speedo and clock. The Xclusive boasts even more gear, including a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated leather seats and Brabus floor mats.

Brabus says the Fortwo variants will reach European dealers this fall.

Cee'd spawns a soft-top

Kia will unveil a coupe-cabriolet concept version of its cee'd hatchback at the Geneva motor show in early March.

In a move that demonstrates either futuristic edginess or rubbish punctuation skills, the Korean manufacturer is calling it the ex_cee'd cabrio.

Based on the three-door cee'd, the ex_cee'd is fitted with a powered fabric roof rather than the folding hardtop found on Peugeot CCs.

With its wedged profile, aggressive front end and bling 19-inch alloys, it's certainly a good-looking addition to the crowded coupe-cabriolet class.

We were impressed by the quality of the cee'd hatch when we drove it recently, and if this model makes it to production unchanged, we reckon Kia is on to another winner.

Don't expect to see it on the roads any time before mid-2008, though.

Toyota Rolls Out Limited-Edition Camry Hybrid To Celebrate 50 Years in U.S.

TORRANCE, Calif. — When Toyota rolled out its Toyopet Crown in the United States back in 1957, Elvis Presley was filming Jailhouse Rock, John F. Kennedy had just won a Pulitzer Prize for Profiles in Courage and President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed in his second inaugural address that "We do not fear this world of change."

Toyota's first year here was not a great success. The Toyopet Crown was underpowered and couldn't measure up to the long-distance demands of American driving — something that Toyota admits on its historical Web site. But Shotaro Kamiya, president of Toyota Motor Sales in Japan that year, said, "Even if our cars don't quite measure up at the moment, we don't have time to just stand around and watch. We need a bridgehead."

There's no doubt that this is a philosophy that has worked for the Japanese auto giant in the U.S. market. To celebrate, Toyota is rolling out the 2007 Camry Hybrid 50th Anniversary Edition beginning in March. It will carry a sticker price of $32,300, including a $620 destination charge.

The special model will feature Blizzard Pearl paint, 16-inch alloy wheels with a graphite finish and 50th Anniversary Edition badging. A power moonroof and heated power mirrors are standard. Other features include a DVD navigation system with a four-disc changer, leather-trimmed bisque-colored interior, heated front seats and carpeted floor mats with the 50th Anniversary Edition logo.

Toyota says it will build only 3,000 units of the special-edition Camry Hybrid.

Kia Rio Hybrid

SEOUL, S. Korea — Kia Motors has announced that it will unveil the Rio Hybrid concept at the upcoming Geneva auto show.

The brand's first-ever gas-electric hybrid, developed in conjunction with Korean parent company Hyundai, employs a 90-horsepower 1.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine mated to a compact 12-kilowatt electric motor.

Kia said it is working with the Korean Ministry of the Environment on an ambitious R&D exercise that will see nearly 4,000 Rio Hybrids on local roads as part of the company's "real world" test program.

Kia previously had hinted that it planned to begin selling the Rio Hybrid in North America in 2007, but those plans have been stalled until 2008-'09, according to media reports from Korea.

Suzuki's "World Debut"

GENEVA — Japanese automaker Suzuki Motor, which has partnerships around the world, sent out a press release this week touting the upcoming "world debut" of its new SX4 sedan. Trouble is, we've actually seen this vehicle previously — in another country, with another badge, from another manufacturer.

Last fall at the Beijing Motor Show, Chinese automaker Changan Auto pulled the wraps off its new Tianyu sedan. Changan is partnered with several different overseas manufacturers, including Ford and Suzuki. The Tianyu, in fact, is none other than the SX4 sedan.

The SX4 sedan is the four-door notchback companion to the five-door SX4 compact crossover that was introduced last year in the United States. It is expected to share the five-door's 143-horsepower DOHC 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and most of its running gear. It will go on sale later this year at U.S. dealerships as a 2008 model.

Suzuki's Geneva stand also will feature the Splash, a sneak peek at the company's forthcoming European MPV, as well as the latest iteration of Suzuki's WRC challenger, which enters competition in August.

Special Edition: Volkswagen Fahrenheit GTI

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Hoping to hype sales of its sporty Rabbit-based GTI hatchback, Volkswagen of America is offering a limited edition called the Fahrenheit GTI. Available now at U.S. dealers, the car is priced starting at $27,665 plus a $640 destination charge. VW says only 1,200 copies will be built.

The Fahrenheit GTI comes only with the DSG transmission and is painted bright orange. Other highlights include a three-spoke perforated leather steering wheel, sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels, heated seats faced with leather and orange interior trim.

2007 Chevrolet Corvette Victory Edition

(from General Motors Press Release) Victory Edition Corvette celebrates Le Mans success.
Limited edition of 250 Corvette Coupes will arrive in Europe at the beginning of March

To celebrate the success of Corvette in sports car racing and in particular the prestigious Le Mans 24-Hour event, a limited series of just 250 Victory Edition Corvette Coupes is being produced. Since Corvette Racing made its debut in 1999, the team has won over 50 races, including five class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans between 2001 and 2006.

The Victory Edition Corvette is based on the Corvette C6 Coupe which shares strong links with the Corvette C6.R race car and the high performance version Corvette Z06. The Victory Edition offers the LS2 6.0L V-8 engine producing 297kW (404 hp) and 546 Nm of torque, matched to a rear-mounted transaxle that helps improve vehicle weight distribution. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, with the option of an electronically controlled 6-speed Paddle Shift transmission with automatic modes.

The Victory Edition Corvette is available in two colours reflecting the Corvette racing heritage; Black or Velocity Yellow Tintcoat, distinguished by Competition Grey aluminium wheels, 18-inch front and 19-inch rear. A body-colour wide rear spoiler is a further distinguishing feature.

The interior features two-tone leather seats with Corvette flag emblems and contrasting stitching. Cars with the black exterior feature an ebony and red theme while ebony and titanium grey colours mark the interior of Velocity Yellow cars. Both interiors are further enhanced by Competition Grey door sill plates, a carbon-look interior trim package and a unique, numbered Victory Edition badge.

The Victory Edition Corvette features a DVD Navigation System with touch screen and voice guidance, along with a Luxury Package. This includes heated seats, a memory package with presets for two drivers for the 6-way power drivers seat, exterior mirrors and powered telescopic steering wheel. A head-up display including G-force meter, auto-dimming inside rear view mirror and a premium Bose 7-speaker sound system.

Every Corvette Victory Edition will get a numbered car identification interior badge. And, as part of their ownership experience, buyers are invited to participate in a 1 day free Corvette Drivers Training event with professional instructors at selected race tracks across Europe.

The Corvette Victory Edition will be available in Europe at the beginning of March 2007.

Adventures in Oz With the Corvette Z06

GYMPIE, Australia — Remember the name Performax International. We're talking about a small Australian importer that has pulled off a rather remarkable feat: It has built what is claimed to be the world's first right-hand-drive conversion of the Chevrolet Corvette Z06

Furthermore, the company, formerly known as Corvette Queensland, already has sold three copies to Australian enthusiasts since December and reckons it can build and sell up to two dozen a year. Including taxes and the cost of the four-week conversion, the asking price Down Under is U.S. $189,000 — nearly three times the Z06's $70,000 U.S. sticker.

Performax also offers RHD conversions of the standard C6 Vette coupe and convertible, priced from around U.S. $140,000, and is reportedly working on a conversion of the Ford Mustang GT. The latter model is expected to reach Aussie dealerships in spring 2008, priced at "only" U.S. $80,000.

Tesla Motors To Build WhiteStar Electric Sedan in New Mexico

SANTA FE, New Mexico — Tesla Motors says it will build a $35 million assembly plant in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to make its WhiteStar all-electric sedan starting in fall 2009. It is the company's first assembly plant in the United States.

The San Carlos, California-based Tesla said it will produce at least 10,000 units of the five-passenger sedan each year at the new plant. The vehicles will cost $50,000 for the standard model or $65,000 for a premium model with "greater performance and range." Tesla has predicted the WhiteStar will have a range of about 250 miles.

Tesla continues to be on a roll. It plans to launch production of its first vehicle — a striking, $100,000 all-electric roadster that sprints from zero to 60 mph in 4 seconds — this year at a U.K. plant owned by Lotus Cars. It also opened a new tech center in Rochester Hills, Michigan, earlier this year to develop the WhiteStar.

The state of New Mexico said it is looking into the purchase of 100 WhiteStar vehicles for the state fleet over a two-year period as a demonstration of its commitment to clean energy.

Elton John Helps Auction First U.S. Audi R8

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — The first 420-horsepower 2008 Audi R8 bound for the United States will be auctioned off on February 24 at the 15th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation party to celebrate the Academy Awards. Bidding starts at $100,000 for the highly anticipated two-seater, with the winner set to take delivery in July — well in advance of the car's launch in the fall.

Audi of America has yet to announce pricing on the R8, but the company has noted on its Web site that the car is expected to retail between $130,000 and $150,000. The R8 is equipped with a 4.2-liter V8 and a six-speed manual transmission or R tronic sequential gearbox. It sprints from zero to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds and is equipped with Quattro all-wheel drive.

Bids for the car can be placed at eBay Live Auctions.

Last year, two Audi Q7s fetched a total of $280,000 at the Elton John event.

No word on which Elton John soundtrack will accompany the auction, but anything from Rare Masters would be appropriate.

Fioravanti Thalia

GENEVA — We've come to expect the unexpected from former Pininfarina ace Leonardo Fioravanti, father of the Dino and other delectable Ferraris. His creation for this year's Geneva auto show — the Thalia — does not disappoint.

The Thalia, a design study for a futuristic crossover vehicle, is said to feature an alternative-energy propulsion system. Perhaps its most striking design feature is a second "windshield" — kind of like a modern-day take on the Olds Vista Cruiser wagon — for the second-row passengers.

The bubbled dome and higher seating position give rear occupants an unimpeded view of the road ahead. The propulsion system is packaged under the raised rear floor.

Thalia was one of the fabled Greek muses of poetry and comedy.

1g Racing Secures Production Rights to Noble M12 and M400

LEICESTERSHIRE, England — 1g Racing has secured the production rights to the British-designed Noble M12 and M400 supercars. The Ohio-based company will now be free to modify the cars for sale in the U.S.

Under the terms of the agreement, Noble retains the U.K. rights to the cars and also the use of the trademarks and names. 1g is required to rebadge and rename the cars by July 15.

The deal allows Noble to focus its resources on the development of the much-delayed M15, a rival to the Audi R8 and Porsche 911. Company founder Lee Noble said, "Our new model will be a big step forward and this will leave no room in our lineup for the M12/M400."

1g Racing is no stranger to the Noble brand. The company already had a deal to sell the M12 and M400 in kit form. To legally register the car in the U.S., customers were required to purchase a rolling chassis from 1g and then source the engine from elsewhere. The new deal will allow 1g to develop U.S. versions.

Actual Photos Leaked from Audi: A5 Coupe Exposed

It wasn’t the pressure of the German buff books such as Autobild or Auto Motor und Sport pushing for an exclusive on the new Audi A5, set to debut at Geneva in just a few weeks time, that finally ushered Audi’s new coupe into the light. No, as best we can tell, the photos you see here are wallpapers of the new car that the company hosted on their Audi.de website ahead of the launch.

Just how these photos were found remains a mystery, as the Audi A5 microsite remains unchanged other than the countdown clock ticking away the time until the car’s actual reveal in Geneva. However, the photos original addresses link to Audi, making the situation more puzzling and indicative of perhaps an intended leak.

Originally believed to be revealed next to an S version, dubbed S5, we now believe the A5 will be revealed alone, save another non-coupe reveal. The S5 won’t be delayed by much, just a few weeks we’re told which puts it square in the sights of either the New York Auto Show in the States, AMI in Europe.

Engines expected for the A5 coupe include the 3.2 and 4.2, the latter probably updated with FSI and maybe even Valvelift from the Roadjet concept and fitted to the S5. From the pictures we know that diesel is also in the cards… no surprise, this is Audi… as the photo depicts a 3.0 TDI-badged variant.

Looking closely, it is interesting to see some of the design evolutions of the car. On the outside, the nose is very close to that of the TT S-line, though foglights have been raised to break the plane of the front bumper above the lower air inlet, the latter making use of a soccer-ball pattern grating at the front corners.

Headlights appear to be more squared off than other recent Audis we’ve seen, though looking closely they appear to include an R8-style line of LED lights that perhaps redefine their shape once lit. In all photos found thus far, these don’t appear to be lit.

European side indicators previously found on the fenders now move to the rearview mirror assemblies in much the same fashion as the design of the Q7 SUV, while a newer and fresher evolution of Audi’s taillights have also been applied.

Inside, the evolution continues. The dashboard, while a bit curvier, shows strong A6 influences. In most photos, MMI appears to have been relocated to the dashboard like the placement in the TT, but another photo reveals it on the center console, leaving the dashboard a bit of a mystery to us as we’re not sure why Audi would design two different dashboards.

2007 Maserati GranTurismo

The new model name - Maserati GranTurismo - is not incidental. Once again, the partnership between Maserati and Pininfarina gives birth to a car that is able to generate emotions and sets itself apart from competitors, due to the technique with which it is built and its unique style.

The new Maserati GranTurismo represents a further step towards the completion of the Trident product range, following the worldwide launch of the Quattroporte Automatic at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Vaux in the box

Ah, the great gap between concept and reality.
We rather liked the Vauxhall Antara concept that we saw a year-and-a-half ago - a swoopy, funky little SUV with coupe stylings.
Eighteen months on and this is what we get as a production model. A dull-as-daytime-TV soft-roader.

Targeting the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV-4 - and impressively managing to be even more anodyne and unthreatening than either - the Antara is Vauxhall's first 4x4 since the Frontera died a little-mourned death in 2004.

Perhaps its most telling feature is what Vauxhall is calling Intelligent Four-Wheel Drive.

Basically it means that the Antara operates in two-wheel-drive mode for everyday, on-road use, and only switches to the full-four when it hits the slippery stuff.

Call us cynics, but we don't reckon that'll happen often in Bromley.

This half-baked four-wheel-drive system does at least have the benefit of decent economy.

The two-litre turbodiesel - yep, that's the top-of-the-range engine - returns 38mpg on the combined cycle, or for big thrills you could choose the 2.4-litre four-pot petrol unit.

The diesel comes with the option of a five-speed manual or auto gearbox, while you'll have to make do with the manual 'box if you specify the petrol engine.

Elsewhere, kit levels are pretty comprehensive with top spec 'SE' models getting, well, just about everything. Good thing too, as a range-topping Antara will set you back £27,695 when it arrives in July.

Edo Unleashes 800-HP Maserati MC 12XX

AHLEN, Germany — Confessing that it was "never very happy with the Maserati MC 12," German tuner Edo Competition has unleashed the Maserati MC 12XX. The aim of this iteration is to hit "Ferrari FXX power levels," Edo said.

The Maserati MC 12XX is equipped with a 6.3-liter V12 engine that churns out 800 horses and 575 pound-feet of torque. Edo says it's a 170-hp boost over the Maserati MC 12R, thanks to FXX-like steel cylinder and piston, new Titan valve springs and connecting rods, new exhaust manifolds and a new clutch. The MC 12XX has a maximum speed of 242 mph.

Edo says that the volume of the exhaust is adjustable via a button and that the car is equipped with new Michelin racing wheels. The kit includes one-day testing with an instructor, data recording and hospitality on a racetrack.

Audi S5 Photos

Less than twenty four hours after the first images of the Audi A5 coupe surfaced on the internet, come four more photos revealing its S5 performance sibling. Judging by file name structure and a quick poll of Audi contacts, the photos you see here are most definitely the real thing.

Up until now we’ve known the S5 would be launched either immediately or not far behind the A5, and that the car would likely feature a stepped-up version of Audi’s 4.2 that would include FSI and possibly the new Valvelift technology in order to bump power.

Looking at these few leaked photos, you can see that the S5 boasts a more aggressive front fascia and S-car trademark grey grille. New to an S-car is what appears to be an aluminum segment mounted on the center of the chin spoiler. This could be an optical illusion as the car itself is silver, but the segment appears to be of accenting aluminum and more like elements we’ve seen on the allroad if that is the case.

The front shot of the car also shows, for the first time, the lit LED daytime running lights. Much inspired by those on the R8, the rounded bars of light redefine the shape of the lights when they are activated.

Quad exhaust tips and a corresponding center aluminum segment help further the car at the rear.

Inside, we can see several new design elements. An RS 4-inspired shift knob is similar to the one seen in A5 photos, though it gets white stitching on the steering wheel and shift boot much like the S8 and S6.

The two-material trim style at the belt looks much-inspired by the interior of the A6, so its aluminum and carbon fiber mix are not surprisingly very close in appearance and feel to that of the S6. You can just make out the carbon fiber trim on the center console accent and on the left of the interior photo where it is fitted to the driver’s side door.

A start button on the center console, also seen in the other A5 shots, looks to be replaced with an equivalent silver aluminum version.

As you can see in the S5, the dash-mounted MMI controls are relocated to the center console just below the shifter for cars with Navigation and the optional in-dash CD changer.

So does the surfacing of these photos indicate that the S5 will be at Geneva? With the also-expected intro of the BMW M3, that would be quite a rivalry and quite a Geneva not-to-miss. While one contact earlier suggested this could happen, more recent and likely suggestion is that the car will show up at one of the smaller shows later this Spring.

430-HP Roush Stage 3 BlackJack Mustang Unveiled

LIVONIA, Mich. — It's a clear case of the old rule that you can't beat the dealer. Mustang tuner Roush has unleashed a limited-edition run of 100 Stage 3 BlackJack Mustangs, noting that all of the vehicles have been presold already at $56,182, including destination charge and tax.

Roush boosted the V8's horsepower to 430, which it said is the "most in the history of the company." The polished Roushcharger system, which delivers 400 pound-feet of torque, includes a Roots-style M90 supercharger, 38-pounds/hour fuel injectors, Roush-designed intake manifold, intercooler assembly with radiator, and a custom Roush ECM calibration to optimize fuel and spark delivery.

The Stage 3 BlackJack gets a matte black 21-inch stripe across the center of the black paint and a seven-piece Roush aero body kit. Under the hood are polished billet aluminum accessories, including radiator, oil and strut tower caps. Handling has been enhanced with a Stage 3 suspension package that gets high-performance versions of the stock front struts, rear shocks, front and rear springs, front and rear sway bar and jounce bumpers.

Interior tweaks include charcoal leather seating with an embroidered Stage 3 BlackJack logo, white electroluminescent gauges, billet aluminum pedal kit and short-throw shifter with black shifter ball.

As you might expect, each car comes with a certificate of authenticity, signed by the master himself.

2006 Aston Martin DBR9

(from Aston Martin Press Release) The 2006 Le Mans 24 Hours ended in heartbreak for the Aston Martin Racing team. After leading the GT1 class for most of the race, the team couldn’t deliver the victory that looked to be on the cards and had to settle for second place.

The lead DBR9 driven by Pedro Lamy, Stephane Ortelli and Stephane Sarrazin suffered a clutch problem in the 21st hour, forcing it to pit for lengthy repairs. The pitstop lasted 45 minutes and resulted in car 009 dropping down to fifth in class, much to the disappointment of the thousands of Aston Martin Racing fans in the record 230,000 crowd.

The team’s other DBR9, which started on pole position, was another favourite for honours, but its chances of victory diminished when it suffered a cracked oil pipe on lap four. Tomas Enge, Darren Turner and Andrea Piccini staged a fabulous fight back to move from 48th to 6th overall, and second in GT1.

There was also a strong performance by the Team Modena DBR9. The David Brabham, Nelson Piquet and Antonio Garcia car finished ninth overall and fourth in GT1.

George Howard-Chappell, Team Principal, Aston Martin Racing: “It’s very disappointing to be leading at the 21-hour mark, only to have victory snatched away from us. This is the second successive year that this has happened and, to be honest, I’m fed up with it.

“Without the massive resources normally associated with being a full Works team, we constantly have to punch above our weight. We put in a fantastic team performance this weekend and we had a great battle with the Corvettes. But, whichever way you dress it up, we’re not happy to finish second.”

David Richards, Chairman of Aston Martin Racing: “We have a sense of dйjа vu about this result. For the second year in a row we’ve had the speed to win the race, but not for 24 hours. We’re disappointed, but it will be only few days before we start looking ahead to next year’s race.”

DBR9 007: 2nd in GT1 (+ 5 laps), 6th overall, 350 laps

After a frenetic start to the race, which saw the Safety Car deployed on only lap four, car 007 sustained a damaged oil pipe as Darren Turner brought it into the pitlane. The resultant repair work cost the car six laps, a deficit that it could not recover. The car ran faultlessly for the remainder of the race, except for a puncture in the middle of the night, and second in class/sixth overall was an impressive recovery.

Tomas Enge: “We could have won this race, so I don’t get any satisfaction from finishing second. I’m proud of my qualifying record here, but it’s only the race that counts. We came here to win.”
Darren Turner: “It’s good to have got the car to the end of the race and to be on the podium. But what happened at the start was a big disappointment and we were always playing catch-up from there.”

Andrea Piccini: “It feels good to finish my first Le Mans 24 Hours on the podium. Le Mans is Le Mans, and it was already great to be here with Aston Martin Racing. To be on the podium feels great.”

DBR9 009: 5th in GT1 (+14 laps), 10th overall, 341 laps

The car ran faultlessly until the final three hours. Early on, the car ran second in class, before taking the lead at midnight. The first sign of trouble was when Stephane Ortelli had gear selection problems with three hours of the race remaining. The clutch needed replacing a lap later, which dropped it back to fifth and the drivers then nursed the car home.

Pedro Lamy: “We were leading for a long time and it was a real shame that we had the problem with the clutch. We knew then that we could not win, which was very frustrating. In a 24-hour race, sometimes you are lucky and sometimes you are not. We were unlucky.”

Stephane Sarrazin: “Until the problem with the clutch, the car was really good to drive. It was fast on old and new tyres, and we could push hard. I’m very sad not to win because we had the speed to do so.”

Stephane Ortelli: “I am in love with Le Mans, and when you are in love you get sometimes get upset. In my opinion we were the strongest team and had the strongest car in the GT1 race, so it’s a really frustrating situation not to win. But we have nothing to regret: we did a great job as a team and just stopped too early. We shouldn’t forget the positives.”

Chrysler: Let the Fire-Sale Games Begin

DETROIT — Prospective bidders already have begun jockeying for position as German auto giant DaimlerChrysler prepares to spin off or sell the struggling Chrysler Group.


Rumors began flying on both sides of the Atlantic — and the Pacific — almost immediately after CEO Dieter Zetsche on Thursday confirmed the company was exploring "all options" regarding Chrysler.

Several media reports in Europe said Zetsche met in December with General Motors Chairman Rick Wagoner and discussed a wide range of scenarios, including the possibility of joint vehicle development. But the likelihood that GM will actually buy Chrysler seemed dim, considering how much product overlap exists between the two companies, GM's own brand-management issues and how much excess baggage Chrysler would bring to the party, from underused assembly plants to the same kinds of "legacy" health care and pension costs that still plague GM.
On Friday, the Times of London reported that Korean automaker Hyundai also was interested in buying Chrysler, ostensibly to get access to its U.S. dealer network — a notion that was quickly and officially scotched by Hyundai. Other follow-up media reports speculated that Hyundai, which operates a joint engine-manufacturing facility in Michigan with Chrysler and Mitsubishi, might also be interested in full-size Dodge pickup trucks and SUVs, as well as the Jeep brand. Most of those reports failed to add that sales of Dodge trucks and Jeep vehicles have stumbled badly in the past year.

Other reports have paired Chrysler with European automakers PSA and Fiat, both of which pulled out of the U.S. market years ago. Neither company is considered a strong suitor.

DaimlerChrysler has yet to put a price on its ailing U.S. subsidiary, which it acquired in a controversial 1998 takeover. Analysts say the potential selling price could range from $6 billion to $12 billion, but at least one insider suggested the German parent might have to offer a "fire sale" deal to get Chrysler off its books, much as BMW was forced to do with Rover in 2000.

New OETTINGER-TT

As opposed to many others, at OETTINGER's in Friedrichsdorf they have not succumbed to the temptation of over-loading the new development of the Audi design star by adding the usual pretentious add-ons with air intakes widely ajar and huge spoiler-works supposed to enhance the impression of sportive power. Far from it, the people in Friedrichsdorf have restricted themselves to two modest prolongations of the front skirt together with a simple carbon splitter, and lateral sillboards, which rarely ever have so perfectly taken up the line of an Audi. At the stern they content themselves with a rear-skirt insert forming a perfect frame for the (up to 4, if required) rear exhaust pipes of the OETTINGER stainless-steel exhaust systems. In short: The traditional specialists' aerodynamic package combines a sportive character with unequalled elegance and perfect style.

Particularly from the rear-view mirror the TT's impression has become much more awe-inspiring through the forward-facing new design. And there is really something behind: Several new aspects of increased performance are responsible that the motor keeps the promise made by the appearance.

The 2.0 T-FSI is upgraded to 235 HP and a torque of 280 lb ft. As usual, also in the course of this development the driving characteristics and a broadly applicable torque were much more important within the specifications than the nominal performance output. Other tuners may play games – OETTINGER stands for true performance.

For those who demand higher performance, the tuning specialist from Hesse offers another impressive kit for the 2.0 T-FSI: Thanks to the new motor mapping, the modified fuel-injection pump, adapted FSI injection nozzles, an enhanced charge-air cooler, and the larger OETTINGER charger – all these together serve to elicit 350 HP and 347 lb ft from the aggregate. The mirror-finished stainless-steel exhaust system with its sports-catalytic converter has its share, of course, just as the new reinforced clutch system and driving disk. Summing up: A valuation of the OETTINGER TT has the following most important figures to show: Acceleration 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds, and a top speed of about 270 km/h!

An especially adapted stainless-steel threaded gear performs the perfect grip of the new wheel-/tyre combination: The new OETTINGER Type RXX wheel, which celebrated its world premiere mounted on the new OETTINGER-TT in its 20"-version, fitted with the new types: VA 245/30/20 and HA 245/30/20 will also be shown for the first time at the Essen Motor Show (the versions 19" and

Audi A5

INGOLSTADT, Germany — Audi wasn't banking on revealing its new A5 coupe for another two weeks, but a series of photographs leaked onto the Internet overnight have quickly squashed the plan that would have seen the stylish new two-door unveiled in all its glory for the first time at the Geneva auto show on March 6.

The photographs, which appeared on several automotive Web sites, show the exterior of the new A5 from a number of different angles in a studio setting. Styled by ex-Audi design boss Walter de'Silva, the new car boasts clear hints from the German carmaker's second-generation TT coupe, boasting a prominent grille, heavy shoulder line and deep character lines along the rockers.

At the same time, the A5 also shares various elements with the larger A6 sedan, including the shape of its headlamps, surfacing treatment and rear-end look. Inspiration for the new coupe is said to have come from the well-received Nuvolari concept shown back in 2004.

The photographs also expose the A5's interior, which appears to have been lifted from the A6, but with Audi's MMI (Multi Media Interface) rotary controller moved to the dashboard from its usual position on the center console.

The exact origin of the leaked photographs is unknown at this stage, although the number plate worn by the car in question suggests they may have come from a German rental-car company brochure. Audi traditionally places an Ingolstadt number plate on cars featured in its official press photographs, but the A5 in the pictures has a number plate from Hamburg.

The A5 is the first Audi model to benefit from a new platform structure that goes under the internal code name B8. It has been developed with improved weight distribution and steering response in mind. Among the engines planned to power the new coupe is Audi's 255-horsepower 3.2-liter V6, and, as indicated by the badges on the rear of the car featured in the leaked photographs, a 225-hp 3.0-liter diesel V6.

Rumors suggest an S6 variant of the new car will appear at the New York auto show in April, powered by a 340-hp 4.2-liter V8 engine.

Audi Readies Two World Launches, Expected to Be A5 plus... ?

Audi has shared a short brief announcing their press conference at the Geneva Motor Show at the beginning of March. Ingolstadt has already confirmed that the A5 would be one of the introductions, stated by Audi AG boss Rupert Stadler at a roundtable discussion in Detroit in January.

Just what the second launch will be has not been officially confirmed, though two hypotheses on the subject have suggested either and S version of the A5 dubbed S5, or a small SUV to position under the Q7 and going by the name Q5.

The official Audi text reads:

Sources close to Fourtitude have mentioned that the S5 would be "launching immediately", though we now believe immediately does not mean Geneva. New York perhaps? Not the largest show on the docket, it is the only major show between now and Frankfurt in September and it's a strong market for Audi of America. Either way, solid and more recent information says no S5 at Geneva.

The second theory comes from several online blogs claim that the official Geneva Auto Show website listed the Audi Q5 as an introduction earlier today, along with a known computer-generated rendition that was originally published by WorldCarFans.com. There is no way to verify the presence of the Q5 on the Geneva site, as those same websites also report that the news was removed from teh site earlier today as well. While possible, the likelihood of the Q5 bowing in Geneva is unlikely based on what we've heard.

What will the second model be? Ingolstadt and Auburn Hills are staying mum. A new engine in an existing model is the only other information we can glean. RS 6? R8 V10? Unlikely on both counts, but who knows. Consider us eating our hat. We thought we had this one figured out. Apparently not.

The image above, a computer-generated impression of what the A5 will look like, is not the actual car that is expected to be shown. Instead, it is our best attempt to depict the car based on test mules spied in various parts of the world and known Audi design cues.

Coupe de grace: New Maserati Coupe

These are the first sketches of the new Maserati Coupe, due to debut at the International Motor Show in early March. Suddenly two weeks seems like a very long time to wait.

The Coupe looks to be based on a shortened version of the Quattroporte, and should be available in three different body styles - Spyder, 2+2 and hardtop convertible.

Under the bonnet, well, we're not promising anything, but best guesses indicate that the Coupe will be powered by the 4.3-litre V8 from Ferrari's F430.

However, there are rumblings that Maserati could even bore that engine out to five litres to produce 470bhp, while at the lower end of the power scale, the option of a reworked BiTurbo version of the V6 from Alfa's 159 has also been mooted.

Although the previous generation Coupe was styled by Italian genius Giorgetto Giugiaro, Maserati has put the design of the new Coupe in the hands of Pininfarina - responsible for the Quattroporte, as well as the Ferrari Enzo and P4/5.

If you hadn't guessed yet, we reckon it looks gorgeous. How much of the hyper-muscular swooping styling makes it to production remains to be seen.

But if it turns out to look even a 10th as good as these sketches, we'll happily sell our family pets to unscrupulous fast food manufacturers to lay our hands on one.

2006 H&R Springs FMJ Mustang GT

(from H&R Springs Press Release) ‘FMJ’, the most recent H&R Mustang project, debuted at the 2006 SEMA Show with huge success. Drawing from a rich heritage of high performance Ford Mustangs, the H&R ‘FMJ’ project – short for “Full Metal Jacket” which is a type of bullet – is inspired by the 1960’s movie Bullitt and its namesake Ford Mustang.

The subtle ‘less is more’ styling of the Bullitt era is embodied by the ‘FMJ’ project. Subtle styling cues include the custom black satin finish Shelby billet grille and California front spoiler with custom purpose built front splitter. In the back of ‘FMJ’ a carbon fiber rear lip hides the factory third brake light and an integral LED brake light has been seamlessly integrated into the rear of the awesome all-glass Glassback roof. This “subtle”, yet distinct, H&R built Mustang is most notably set apart from the pack of gaudily painted and stickered custom Mustangs with its restrained light grey paint – a 1950’s Porsche 356 Speedster color.

Current power upgrades include an SCT re-calibrated engine control computer, MRT cold air intake, and stainless steel H-pipe and hi-flow catalysts with Flowmaster mufflers. For improved acceleration, the ‘FMJ’ differential has been re-geared to 3.73:1 and is now enclosed with a new Ford Racing differential cover and body color powder coated rear axle. Motul fluids keep all the power parts well lubricated and at peak performance.

The H&R ‘FMJ’ Mustang isn’t just fast in a straight line though. H&R has developed premium suspension and sway bars for the Ford Mustang GT that elevates the ‘FMJ’ handling into a league of its own. Unmatched performance and comfort is provided by specially designed height adjustable H&R coil overs for the Mustang GT, allowing both front and rear ride height adjustment. The rear is fitted with easy to use H&R exclusive height adjusters that allow easy adjustment to the rear ride height. Huge H&R sway bars – measuring 36mm front and 26mm rear – minimize body roll and increase traction in the turns, allowing ‘FMJ’ to harness the full performance potential of its massive wheels and tires; Custom O.Z. And of course no serious project vehicle is complete without interior modifications and the ‘FMJ’ Mustang is as serious as they come. The interior features an over-the-top look with its dark brown stressed leather and diamond stitch pattern on the seats, door panels, and center console. A complete Pioneer Premier Audio system was installed for optimum sound imaging. Controlled by a Pioneer DEH-P880PRS head unit, the system features three Pioneer amps for a total of 2400 watts power, interior style matched tweeters, and a 12-inch sub. All the components were chosen for their clean lines and visuals that match the ‘FMJ’ project theme perfectly, controls all. A few finishing touches to the interior include a Custom gauge panel above the head unit – fitted with three Autometer Cobalt gauges: Volt, Vacuum, and Engine/Diffential Oil temperature – and an MRT orange shift knob.

The H&R ‘FMJ’ Mustang debuted with rave reviews there was something for everybody, from the subtle styling to the awesome interior and modern audio system. ‘FMJ’ proved to be right on target!

Junior - the self-driving car

Meet Junior, the self-driving car that might just be the most sophisticated road-going robot in the world.

Junior is Stanford Racing Team's entry in the 2007 Urban Challenge, the follow-up to 2005's Grand Challenge.

The race requires robot cars to navigate a simulated urban environment, avoiding other cars and negotiating right-of-way at junctions.

That's why Junior is so advanced. Mechanically it's a stock VW Passat estate, but the steering, throttle and brakes are all modified to be completely computer controllable.

Because Junior has to be aware of fast-moving objects in every direction, it is fitted with a sophisticated range-finding laser array that provides a 360-degree three-dimensional view of the surrounding area.

Junior can use this information, and that of six on-board video cameras, to gain a cohesive understanding of the environment and learn to improve its driving.

All very clever, but what does it mean for the rest of us?

Well, while Junior's technologies are currently unproven and prohibitively expensive for us common road users, similar technologies can already be seen filtering down to production cars in the shape of adaptive cruise control and emergency brake assist.

And the benefits of self-driving vehicles are obvious in car-bomb prone war zones such as Iraq, which explains why the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is sponsoring the Urban Challenge.

The race itself takes place on November 3 this year, with a $2 million prize for the winners. Two million dollars? Time for TG to crack open the welding kit and wire cutters...

Audi R8 Debuts at the Canadian International Autoshow

AJAX, ONTARIO - On the heels of the much anticipated TT Coupe launch in Montreal last month, Audi Canada is pleased to debut the R8 in Toronto at the Canadian International Autoshow.

Audi has incorporated the name and the genes of the five-time Le Mans winner, the Audi R8, into a spectacular sports car. As the first Audi mid-engined sports car, the R8 combines Audi's experience gained from numerous motorsport triumphs with groundbreaking design and the acknowledged technological expertise of the brand.
The mid-mounted V8 FSI engine, quattro permanent all-wheel drive and Audi Space Frame aluminum body form the basis for truly outstanding driving dynamics. At 7,800 rpm the 4.2-liter engine delivers 420 hp of power output. Peak torque is 317 ft.-lbs. from 4.500 to 6,000 rpm. No less than 90 percent of this maximum torque is maintained consistently throughout a wide engine speed range from 3,500 all the way to 7,600 rpm.
The performance figures are equally impressive: the R8 accelerates from a standstill to 100 kph in 4.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of over 295 kph.

Among the multitude of unique design fixtures found on the R8, the integrated side blade, which is available in three different and distinct styles, allows for greater personalization while giving the body contour and texture.
The aerodynamics experts at Audi have done their work so thoroughly on the R8 that, as an added benefit of its elegant shape, the body actually produces a downforce - unlike many other sports cars. The ability to personalize the vehicle to the customer's personal preferences continues with the interior, where a wide array of options such as the 12 speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, trim options to accent the exterior, and a variety of perfectly accentuated leather colours are available.

Look for the first fortunate Audi R8 customers to be driving on Canadian roads by year's end.

Final flicker for Skoda's hot hatch

Skoda is pulling the curtain down on the Fabia vRS, but not before one final swansong.

The sporty Fabia is bowing out with a limited edition called the Special Edition, a name that must have taxed the marketing department no end.

There's no extra oomph, but the Special Edition does come with black leather seats with the car's individual number sewn in, metallic blue paint and red brake callipers.

There's also cruise control and a CD autochanger, and Skoda tells us this all adds up to £2,000 worth of extras.

The price of the Special Edition is £12,990, or £615 more than a standard Fabia vRS.

If you fancy one, you'd better get in quick to nab one of the 1,000 cars being made because it's a strict first come, first served basis before the new Fabia goes on sale in the UK in May.

If you want a new shape Fabia vRS, you'll have to wait until mid-2008.

Alfa / Picchio racer

Alfa Romeo could soon be taking on the world in endurance racing if Italian firm Picchio has its way.

Already an established race car builder, Picchio has come up with a concept based on the gorgeous 8C Competizione coupe, although the vehicle would probably be a mid-engined machine.

The rules in the American Grand-Am Cup allow a car's shape to be developed from the existing road car, and the engine supplier can be identified as the car's manufacturer.

Alfa Romeo is believed to be looking at homologating the 8C's engine already.

Picchio is the only European race car manufacturer in the Grand-Am series at present with its DP2 racer, which the Alfa would be based on.

If the Alfa/Picchio racer gets the go-ahead, it could be on the grid from 2008.

Land Rover Discovery Pursuit

When we heard that Land Rover was building a Pursuit version of the Discovery, our hopes were raised that it would be a muscle-bound Terminator of a car.
Unfortunately, what we've got is a tarted-up Disco special edition.

Still, the 300 Pursuit models that are being sold in the UK come with black paint and leather interior, 19in alloy wheels and chrome door mirrors covers.

All this for £29,995 when the car goes on sale in March. Or you could just buy a normal Discovery.

Chrysler, GM Discuss Joint Development of Big SUV

DETROIT — The Chrysler Group is talking with General Motors about jointly developing a large SUV that would share underpinnings with the full-size Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, according to U.S. press reports.

Inside Line has learned that Chrysler had planned to develop a big utility vehicle off its own full-size Ram pickup platform for model-year 2010. But supplier sources say the SUV program, known internally by code name DS74, may have been shelved because of the ongoing budget crunch at Chrysler.

Stories in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal said Chrysler hoped to save as much as hundreds of millions of dollars by sharing development costs with a company like GM. Chrysler has similar arrangements with Volkswagen, for which it is developing a companion to its redesigned Town & Country minivan, and Chery, with which it is developing a small B-segment compact car for North America.

The Wall Street Journal said Chrysler also is talking with GM Daewoo in Korea about jointly developing small cars. Daewoo supplies compact cars and SUVs to a variety of companies and brands, including Chevrolet, Opel and Suzuki.

On Thursday, DaimlerChrysler said it was considering "all options" regarding the financially struggling Chrysler Group, including the possible sale or spin-off of the U.S. automaker.

Mitsubishi 'i'

Mitsubishi has said aye to the 'i'.
But before we get bogged down in Scottish accents or poorly mimicked Ali G-isms, let's be clear that what we're talking about here is Mitsubishi's techno puppy city car.

The 'i' is already a phenomenon in Japan, where its cute looks and gadget appeal have earned it cult status.

The 660cc turbocharged three-cylinder engine has 64bhp and is mounted under the rear seats, so you can poo-poo friends with mere front-engined cars as you show off your mid-engined exotica.

The four-seat 'i' is no ball of fire, with 0-50mph in 11.2 seconds. To be honest, we're not even sure if it reaches sixty.

A four-speed automatic gearbox doesn't help performance but it should take much of the hassle out of city driving.

The 'i' uses an aluminium frame and pushes its passenger compartment right to the edges of the car to create as much interior space as possible.

But it's still narrower than a Citroen C1, allowing it to zip through traffic gaps more readily.

There will only be one model in the 'i' range, which gets climate control, a CD player and, erm, four wheels.

Nonetheless, we're rather smitten with the little 'i'. It's a funky, timeless piece of design and we can't wait for it to arrive this summer.

Sales start on July 1 and the price is set at £8,999.

In Australia, Rumor Mill Running Hot on Holden Exports to U.S. Market

MELBOURNE — If you took notice of all the rumors making the rounds in Australia right now, you'd be betting that the forthcoming VE Commodore Ute — or pickup — will be heading to the United States as the spiritual successor to the Chevrolet El Camino.
At the recent announcement of the VE Commodore-based Pontiac G8, Holden Chairman and Managing Director Denny Mooney conceded there is export potential for the VE Ute (due for release in Australia in September) but played down exports to the U.S. specifically. But he did point out that Holden has had a left-hand-drive ute in Detroit, a left-hand-drive version of the HSV Maloo, under evaluation since last year.

Holden is officially saying nothing about the rumors and has denied that the VE Commodore Ute has been fast-tracked on the back of the prospect of U.S. exports. One unnamed Holden executive was reported recently in Australia as saying, "It was always meant to be September."

But clearly, a new small utility vehicle would be of great benefit to GM in the U.S., with the traditional large-pickup market cooling considerably because of rising fuel prices. On the Australian side, a U.S. export contract would provide Holden with the additional volume needed to maximize production efficiencies in its Australian plants.

NHTSA Finds Fault With 2007 Buick LaCrosse in Latest Round of Testing

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration handed out superior grades to a wide slate of 2007 vehicles, but not all models fared well. The Buick LaCrosse got a five-star rating for front crash protection but earned only one star for side crash performance, despite the fact that it is equipped with side airbags.

General Motors responded rapidly, saying it began adding more foam padding to the interior door trim in January, and has asked the federal government to retest the car.

In rollover testing, three vehicles, the Mazda 6, Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky, earned five stars. But none of the three rated the top score for both front and side crash protection.

The agency said the newly tested models earning five stars include the Dodge Caliber, Ford Five Hundred, Kia Optima, Mercury Montego, Subaru Legacy, Saturn Aura and Toyota Camry. In addition, 17 SUVs earned a five-star crash test rating: the Acura MDX and RDX, Audi Q7, Dodge Nitro, Ford Freestyle, GMC Acadia, Honda CR-V, Honda Element, Hyundai Santa Fe, Infiniti FX35/45, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Kia Sorento, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-7, Saturn Outlook, Subaru Outback and Toyota Highlander.

NHTSA had hoped to avoid another year of results where most vehicles scored above average. In 2006, nine out of 10 vehicles tested did so. The agency said it has completed front, side, and rollover ratings for 63 of the 70 vehicles scheduled to be tested for the 2007 model year.

Chrysler Group SRT and Richard Petty Announce Partnership

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — It seems like a natural. Chrysler Group's Street and Racing Technology and the Richard Petty Driving Experience announced a new partnership on Thursday designed to make the average Joe or Jane into a better driver.

In a joint statement, the two said more than 60 events are planned this year at such venues as Daytona International Speedway, Road America in Wisconsin, Watkins Glen in New York and Phoenix International Raceway. The first event will be held at the Texas Motor Speedway starting on February 23.

Programs include autocross, advanced car control, performance driving and drifting. At the end of each day, participants can ride shotgun and take a hot lap around the track with a Richard Petty Driving Experience professional driver. Vehicles in the program include the Dodge Viper SRT-10 coupe and roadster, along with the Dodge Charger SRT8.

SRT owners get a one-day session rolled into the purchase of their vehicle. Non-SRT owners can participate for $500. The 2007 schedule is available at the Drive SRT Web site.

Ford in Norway

Mikko Hirvonen has taken a deeply impressive victory in the first Rally of Norway.

Quick Mik brought his Ford Focus WRC home ahead of vastly more experienced team-mate Marcus Gronholm and local boy Henning Solberg, also driving a Focus.

And to continue the good news for the otherwise beleaguered Blue Oval, rookie sensation Jari Latvala finished fifth after a sensational drive back through the pack after incurring a time penalty early in the rally.

A certain Mr Loeb, current champ and arguably the greatest rally driver of all time, had a nightmare in the Norwegian snow.

Looking uncharacteristically flustered, Loeb's rally was inconsistent.

With seven stage victories, the Frenchman had the pace to finish on the podium but ruined his rally with a series of errors.

He was one of many drivers to get stuck in the surprisingly gluey snowbanks, and finished the rally out of the points.

After three rounds, Gronholm now leads the WRC standings with 24 points followed by Hirvonen on 20 and Loeb on 18.

But the big news is the coming of the rookies. Gronholm admitted he could do nothing about Hirvonen's pace in Norway, and Latvala is looking increasingly like the real deal. The season is shaping up nicely...

2007 Geneva Auto Show Preview: Hyundai Unveils New "FD" C-Segment Hatchback

GENEVA — Hyundai will take the wraps off the C-segment hatchback that it has code-named FD on March 6 at the Geneva auto show. This is the first car Hyundai has ever designed specifically for Europe. The "FD" was shown in concept last fall at the Paris Motor Show in the guise of the Hyundai Arnejs.

The new model is scheduled to reach European showrooms this summer. It is the sister vehicle to the Kia Cee'd. Kia launched the Cee'd five-door hatchback last December and will introduce a sporty wagon variant in Geneva. Like the FD, the Cee'd is a critical product for the Korean manufacturer because the vehicles are designed for the Europe market.

Hyundai revealed few details about the FD, only cryptically saying it would include "generous equipment levels and an up-to-the-minute safety package." But it apparently has dumped the Arnejs nameplate in favor of a new alphanumerical naming strategy for Europe. Hyundai said its new product naming strategy will be introduced in Geneva. Arnejs is pronounced "Ar-nez."

Hyundai said it will also roll out a crossover-SUV concept at Geneva that uses "advanced materials" from its partner GE Plastics.

Rare Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Versace Edition Fetches $500,000+ at Auction

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — It seemed perfectly fitting that the auctioneer — actress Sharon Stone — was wearing a black Versace gown as she heated up the bidding for the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Versace Edition here on Thursday.

But the really interesting part of the exercise was the price tag on the rare Lambo: $500,000-plus. The winning bidder was Vik Keuylian of Lamborghini Orange County.

The Versace-edition Lambo was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, with estimated maximum production of about 10. Maison Versace, the Italian design house, outfitted the supercar in black leather emblazoned with a Greek fret motif, its corporate trademark. The vehicle comes with lots of goodies, including a Versace luggage set and a ceramic watch designed by Donatella Versace.

Face-Lifted Mercedes-Benz G-Class Highlights Creature Comforts

STUTTGART, Germany — You'll have to squint to see the external differences between the old Mercedes-Benz G-Class and the face-lifted version that was unveiled on Thursday. The only discernible change on the outside is redesigned LED-look taillights. The new version rolls out in Europe in mid-April.

The cabin of the G-Class gets upgraded with a new instrument cluster, four-spoke steering wheel and center console. Mercedes-Benz said its classic workhorse continues to be refined with such new standard items as heated front seats and a 12-volt power socket.

New options include a reverse-sensing camera, a tire-pressure monitoring system, a sports exhaust system for the long-wheelbase G500 station wagon model and new "cognac" leather upholstery.

Engines and body styles remain the same. The models range from the 224-horsepower G320 CDI to the 500-hp G55 AMG.

Peugeot-sponsored P.L.E.A.S.E design competition

It's one of the most tenuous acronyms we've ever come across, but at least the end result is worth the creaky abbreviation.

The Peugeot-sponsored P.L.E.A.S.E design competition takes it name from the firm's desire to find a car that provides driving 'Pleasure through its Lightness and its Efficiency while remaining Accessible through its Simplicity and Environmentally friendly design'.

We told you it was tenuous.

The winner of this strangely titled contest is the Flux, created by 20-year-old Romanian student Mihai Panaitescu.

Mihai is the youngest ever winner of the competition and his Flux sports car uses a fuel cell in place of a petrol engine.

We hope the contest leads to a job for young Mihai, where he could help Peugeot streamline its acronyms.

Grey Goose Vodka Customizes Rolls-Royce Extended-Wheelbase Phantom

MIAMI — It's undoubtedly one of the more unusual approaches to getting people to drink responsibly. Grey Goose vodka has partnered with Rolls-Royce to create two customized versions of the extended-wheelbase Phantom to promote a "sip responsibly" message.

Grey Goose said the vehicles will be used at high-profile events, where "trained chauffeurs" will educate passengers on the merits of the drink, the car and being socially responsible. The vehicles get a "Grey Goose signature blue exterior and plush upholstery," as well as the Grey Goose logo embroidered onto headrests and integrated into the trim of the car.

The Rolls-Royce extended-wheelbase Phantom is powered by a 6.75-liter 453-horsepower V12 engine.

The car was designed by Joe Iacono of Iacono Design and paint colors were selected by Art Hensel. The team at TCSR started the project in mid August with hopes of introducing the car at the October SEMA show. With plenty of long nights the team achieved their goal and brought the car to the SEMA show. The car was displayed at the main entrance to the show, near the Buckaroo Communications booth. The car was a big hit and received a great amount of attention. It will be on the cover of one of Buckaroo’s many publications, Street Rod Builder. The car also caught the attention of the ESPN’s Mother’s Car Show series. The car was filmed at the show and we expect to see the segment air in mid February. Also during the show, Blackie, a well known car enthusiast, was impressed with the car and invited us to bring it to his invitation only show in March of 2006. Kia Cee'd "Sporty Wagon" for Europe

SEOUL, Korea — Kia has released photographs of the production version of its new Cee'd wagon prior to its unveiling at next month's Geneva auto show.

The new car, which will be sold under the name Sporty Wagon in Europe, forms part of a three-model Cee'd lineup. It slots in alongside the current five-door Cee'd and the three-door version that is planned to be unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Kia claims the Cee'd Sporty Wagon brings class-leading interior accommodation and luggage space to its class. At 176 inches in length, it is 29.3 inches longer than the five-door hatchback version of the Cee'd, all of which is concentrated in the rear overhang. It is also almost a half-inch taller than its hatchback sibling at 58.7 inches.

The Korean carmaker is making much of its new wagon's rear tailgate mechanism. It is hinged 8.9 inches inward from the top of the rear window, an arrangement it says allows you to load the rear luggage compartment without needing to step back from the car when the tailgate is raised.
The engine lineup mirrors that of the Cee'd five-door, with the choice of 105-horsepower 1.4-liter and 122-hp 1.6-liter gasoline units along with three common-rail diesels: a 1.6-liter with either 90 hp or 115 hp, and an upcoming 2.0-liter with 140 hp.

Tuner Special: Geiger Star Force

MUNICH — When the German television network ProSieben wanted special transportation for the 2007 Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood, it turned to local tuner Geiger Cars, which specializes in crafting special high-performance editions of big Detroit vehicles.

So Geiger went to work on a Cadillac Escalade ESV. First, Geiger fitted a stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system, which boosted output to 423 horsepower. Then it added oversize 24-inch chrome wheels shod with Z-rated Pirelli Scorpion tires. Ride height was lowered by 3.9 inches.

Geiger painted the exterior in an exclusive ProSieben Star Force scheme and installed a chrome grille. Atop the hood is an Oscarlike ornament, said to be modeled after ProSieben TV hostess Annemarie Warnkross. A giant folding sunroof was installed over the rear seats.

Inside, the Star Force Escalade features red and black leather seats, a rear partition with retractable glass, a Toshiba LCD projector and a custom audio system with a 1,000-watt amplifier.

2007 Airborne Mini

Iacono Designs has joined forces with Autocraft of Torrance to develop a very special high-performance version of the Mini Cooper. A total of 100 cars will be built as a signature IACONO series. The Airborne Mini Cooper debuted at the 2006 SEMA show in Las Vegas NV.

The numerous performance enhancements include new cams and cylinder head from Cosworth, header from Blue Flame, and cat-back exhaust from Borla. The 440cc injectors, as well as the Direct Flow intercooler, catch can and blower overdrive pulleys are from M7.

The Wide Body Kit that gives the car its distinctive stance is from Iacono Designs.

Bertone To Roll Out Fiat Panda-Based Concept Car

GENEVA, Switzerland — While releasing few details, Italian design house Bertone on Thursday said it will unveil a new two-seater concept car based on the Fiat Panda 100 HP at the upcoming Geneva auto show.

The new Bertone concept features an aluminum body, clear door panels and bucket seats. It is expected to use a 1.4-liter 16-valve engine that delivers 100 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 96 pound-feet of torque at 4,250 rpm. It can sprint from zero to 62 mph in 9.5 seconds.

The concept "harks back explicitly to the Fiat 500 barchetta designed by a young Nuccio Bertone in 1947 as a one-off for his own personal use in races," the company said in a statement. It is intended to celebrate the 95th anniversary of Bertone, which was founded in 1912 when Giovanni Bertone opened a workshop for the repair of horse-drawn carriages.

The concept is based on the new Fiat Panda 100 HP, which made its world debut at the Paris auto show last fall.

The Bertone/Fiat link on the concept is described as "natural and emotional." The companies have collaborated on more than 50 vehicles, from the 850 Spider to the Punto Cabrio.

Transparent Rinspeed eXasis Concept To Make World Debut

LEVERKUSEN, Germany — The sketches of the new Rinspeed concept car eXasis have been provoking lots of reaction on the Internet, and now its creators have released images just ahead of the upcoming Geneva auto show — in time for the company's 30th anniversary.

The two-seater eXasis is made of transparent high-tech plastic in a collaborative effort between Rinspeed and Bayer MaterialScience AG. It is powered by a lightweight 150-horsepower two-cylinder Weber engine driven by bioethanol. "In view of the fact that the car weighs only 750 kilograms (1,653 pounds) because of its lightweight plastic construction, one horsepower has to shift only 5 kg (11 pounds) — and that is about the same as a very nippy Porsche," the company said in a statement.

Its designers say eXasis was created to look like the offspring of the old Auto Union racing cars and a contemporary off-road vehicle. The eXasis has an aluminum chassis and special seats designed in cooperation with Recaro that have 12 transparent ribs, patterned after the ribs in the human body. The concept rides on Pirelli 22-inch high-performance P Zero tires mounted on forged five-spoke wheels by AEZ. The wheels have transparent "inlays" designed to look like small windows.

Ford Takes Wraps off Redesigned C-Max

GENEVA, Switzerland — Ford of Europe will unveil its redesigned C-Max MPV, one of the latest examples of the company's "kinetic design" language, in March at the 2007 Geneva Auto Show.

The five-seater fleshes out a revamped MPV lineup that includes the 5+2-seater S-Max and the full-size seven-seat Galaxy. Design cues reflect those found in the new Ford Mondeo, which the company offered a sneak peek at on Wednesday.

The new C-Max features a slightly wider track than the outgoing model. Changes include a revised front end with a new one-piece sculpted bumper, trapezoidal lower grille and chrome-accented upper grille, bi-xenon headlights and vertical foglamps. Other changes include a panoramic glass roof and new interior updates. Safety features include electronic stability control, side curtain airbags and what Ford calls a pedal intrusion prevention system.

A sport package includes a lowered suspension, specially designed 17-inch alloy wheels, sport seats and a leather steering wheel. A wide slate of diesel and gas engines are available, including an E85 configuration that can be modified to run on compressed natural gas. The gas engines include 1.6-liter, 1.8- liter and 2.0-liter configurations and range from 98 to 143 horsepower. The base transmission is a five-speed manual.

BMW M Sport Coupe

The M Sport Coupe and Convertible models join the 3-Series line-up with lower, stiffer suspension and 18in alloy wheels as standard, continuing a long line of Sport models in the 3-Series range.

There's the usual sports seats finished in Alcantara inside and plenty of 'M' logo badges dotted about the cabin to remind you of the extra cash you paid.

Prices start at £28,330 for the 320i M Sport Coupe and head all the way north to £40,250 for the 335i M Sport Convertible.

Another Sport model to join the BMW fray is the 130i M Sport Limited Edition, based on the new three-door bodyshell.

Finished in black paint with 'lemon leather' interior, it sounds delightful. At least there are some tasty 18in alloy wheels to admire.

There are also some unique interior touches for this 1-Series, including a monikered start/stop button. And to make it even more distinctive, just 160 of them will make it to the UK this spring with a price tag of £30,270.

While introducing these new models, it's also given BMW the chance to sneak in some price increases on the 3-, 5-, 6-, and 7-Series ranges, as well as for the X3, X5 and Z4 models.

Toyota To Show Two Hybrid Concepts

TOKYO — Toyota said on Wednesday it plans to show a pair of hybrid concepts, the Hybrid X and the FT-HS, at the upcoming Geneva auto show.

The Hybrid X will make its world premiere in Geneva in March. Toyota says the concept car "proposes a new design language for hybrid models while also acting as a technology showcase for future hybrid cars."

The FT-HS or Future Toyota Hybrid Sports, was originally shown at Detroit's auto show in January. It is described as a concept of "the sports car of the 21st century." The FT-HS is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car with a "projected" 0-62-mph acceleration in the 4-second range. Toyota says the FT-HS "shows the potential of hybrid technology."

Saab Rolls Out BioPower 100 Concept

DETROIT — When Saab unveils its BioPower 100 Concept at the Geneva auto show in March, it will be demonstrating how vehicles that run on bioethanol can still deliver a performance punch.

The Swedish automaker says the new concept "showcases the first production-based engine to be optimized for pure bioethanol (E100) fuel." Saab blends turbocharging and high-octane E100 in a 2.0-liter engine from the 9-5 to churn out 300 horses and 295 pound-feet of torque. The engine management system and internal components have been modified, allowing the use of greater boost pressure with a raised compression ratio. In effect, the concept has the power characteristics of a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter engine, Saab said.

Performance numbers are impressive. The BioPower 100 Concept sprints from zero to 62 mph in 6.6 seconds and 50-75 mph (5th gear) in 8.2 seconds.

Saab's latest concept is described as "an evolution of the Saab 9-5 SportCombi," with exterior and interior styling tweaks.

You can find tons of 3D car models in the net but most of them works only for small print or internet size. Better 3D mesh are often on original CAD files. My models work with 300 DPI prints, so the Storm can be print on a 10x5 meter Wallpaper.

The Storm use the Diablo frame for size, so if you have a Diablo frame it is a small step to use the Storm as an individual design.

Chevrolet HHR Under Consideration for Europe

ZURICH, Switzerland — General Motors' European operation has announced it will show the Chevrolet HHR (Heritage High Roof) next month at the Geneva auto show in a bid to gauge European interest in the retro-styled hatchback/wagon.

On sale in the United States since 2005, the HHR was initially ruled out for European sale due to the reorganization of the Chevrolet brand following GM's takeover of Korean carmaker Daewoo, which now supplies the majority of Chevrolet models in Europe.

However, high-ranking GM officials say there is now a very good likelihood of it being placed on sale in selected European markets. "We've already weighed the financial aspects of bringing the HHR to Europe. Now we want to see how the car-buying public reacts to the car," a source told Inside Line.

One drawback to the plan could be the HHR's lack of a diesel engine. Currently sold with a choice of two four-cylinder gasoline engines, a 146-horsepower 2.2-liter and a 174-hp 2.4-liter, its appeal would be limited in a market driven by sales of compact diesel-powered hatchbacks. Another obstacle is the lack of a right-hand-drive version for the U.K. market.

Daimler Sell Chrysler?

STUTTGART, Germany — DaimlerChrysler boss Dieter Zetsche is studying a proposal to sell the Chrysler Group, as the company's financially embattled U.S. subsidiary unveiled the latest in a series of massive restructurings aimed at returning Chrysler to profitability by 2008.

In a company statement describing details of the Chrysler restructuring plan, Zetsche said: "We are looking into further strategic options with (other) partners....We do not exclude any option in order to find the best solution for both the Chrysler Group and DaimlerChrysler."

It is the first official indication that the parent company is considering a potential spin-off or sale of the U.S. automaker it acquired in a controversial 1998 "merger of equals."

As part of Chrysler's latest overhaul, the company will shed another 13,000 jobs and will shutter its truck plant in Newark, Delaware, in 2009. Chrysler said it is also reducing the number of vehicle platforms from 12 to seven by 2012, while investing $3 billion in new engines and transmissions.

In Germany, the newspaper Handelsblatt, citing sources on DaimlerChrysler's supervisory board, reported that Zetsche has commissioned a U.S.-based investment bank to examine all possible options for Chrysler following news that the American company posted losses totaling nearly $1.5 billion in 2006.

"Everything is possible," a board source told Handelsblatt, adding, "It is more likely that something drastic will happen than that nothing will happen." Handelsblatt said Zetsche's options include a partial or complete sale of the company.

Among the possibilities open to Zetsche is the formation of an alliance with another carmaker. Recent speculation within European automotive and financial circles has linked Chrysler with Renault, though both sides deny talks have taken place.

A further alternative before Zetsche, according to Handelsblatt, is spinning off Chrysler and refloating it on the New York Stock Exchange.

In Detroit, Chrysler said key elements of its latest three-year "recovery and transformation plan" include reducing the company's longstanding focus on trucks, utility vehicles and minivans, and broadening its sales reach beyond North America.

As part of its product offensive, Chrysler said it will launch more than 20 new and 13 refreshed vehicles by 2009, including the redesigned Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan, the Dodge Avenger and the Jeep Liberty. The company also plans to introduce a new B-segment compact imported from Chinese automaker Chery.

Chrysler's powertrain plan includes provisions to develop a new family of V6 engines under the internal name Phoenix, as well as a new dual-clutch transmission in partnership with Getrag.

Revised steering geometry provides a 20% quicker response, allowing the driver to apply a reduced input for required steering response. This enables the driver to be more precise with inputs - especially on winding roads - and more accurate feedback from the chassis.

The Sports Dynamics suspension, steering and braking package is now standard on the Vanquish S. This includes stiffer springs and dampers and shorter steering arms.

The brakes have been upgraded to incorporate larger six piston calipers and larger grooved and ventilated front discs. The rear discs are 2mm wider for improved heat dissipation. The use of floating discs ensures the driver has consistent pedal feel under heavy braking whilst a new brake pedal assembly reduces travel and enhances pedal feel.

Further development of Aston Martin’s low emissions, all alloy, quad-overhead camshaft, 48 valve, 6.0-litre V12 engine has generated an increase in power from 460 bhp to 520 bhp and torque is boosted to 425 lb ft (577 Nm).

Engine enhancements include new cylinder heads with fully machined inlet ports and combustion chambers to improve airflow, revised engine mapping and new fuel injectors.

The overall interior design is a subtle blend of traditional, classic and modern materials with Bridge of Weir leather upholstery matched to contemporary metal interior fittings and finishes. A number of detailed improvements have been made to the interior of the Vanquish S to enhance the enhance the overall appeal.

Ford Offers Sneak Peek at New Mondeo

BRENTWOOD, England — Ford has released teaser images of its new Mondeo in advance of the car's world debut at the 2007 Geneva Auto Show. The vehicle should be of major interest to U.S. buyers, even though the car initially will only go on sale in Europe this summer, since it is one of several vehicles under consideration by the Dearborn automaker for launch in America.

Just as Saturn has done with the Astra, sister car to the Opel Astra, Ford is taking a hard look at whether its European models, such as the Mondeo, would be appealing to American buyers who have shown a decided distaste for products like the Ford Five Hundred. The Five Hundred was recently renamed the Taurus in a bid to boost the vehicle's showroom traffic. The Mondeo is said to be one of several vehicles being studied for a U.S. launch at the behest of Ford's new president and CEO Alan Mulally.

The new Mondeo goes upscale, apparently adopting design cues from sister brand Jaguar. It will be offered in three variants: a sedan, a hatchback and a wagon. "It's probably the most elegant car we've ever launched, and it's certainly the most technologically advanced," said Roelant de Waard, Ford of Britain's chairman and managing director.

Ford says the new Mondeo is the most recent example of its "kinetic design" language. Exterior cues include striking taillights, a shoulder line that runs through the side of the car and chamfered corners. The cabin gets such luxury touches as piano black trim, soft-touch materials and ambient lighting.

The Mondeo will come in four trim levels in Europe, including the base Edge, the Zetec series, and the top-of-the-line Ghia and Titanium X models. Ford says the Ghia represents "classic luxury," with lots of chrome and wood in the cabin. The Titanium model has a more contemporary look, à la Audi.

High-tech features include vehicle dynamics control with hill launch assist and adaptive cruise control. The new Mondeo gets a wider track and a new rear suspension.

For Europe, the engine choices include a 1.8-liter 98-horsepower or 123-hp diesel with a five-speed manual transmission or a 2.0-liter 138-hp diesel with a six-speed manual transmission. Gas engines include a 108-hp or 123-hp 1.6-liter with a five-speed manual transmission and a new 2.3-liter four-cylinder that makes 159 hp. The new engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. A range-topping 2.5-liter five-cylinder delivers 217 hp and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

The Mondeo is set for launch in Europe in June.

Better performance and higher torque

The TFSI-motor borrowed from parent company VW, is really ideal for tuning revisions. Directly off the assembly line, the turbo engine of Audi S3 already has an impressive 265 HP. One would imagine this alone is enough. Yet, just experiencing the difference proves a visit to mtm is really worth while. In its first stage, mtm replaces the motor electronics. This procedure alone upgrades power to 310 HP/228 kW as well as torque to 400 Nm (Series: 350 Nm). Whoever selects a mtm resonator and the mtm rear silencer receives an additional 5 HP and 5 Nm. The hottest version receives even more components from mtm to boot. With the mtm front silencer and a front pipe with metallic catalysatic converter, performance increases to a powerful 330 HP and torque of 420 Nm. With this addition, in just 5,1 seconds 0 to 100 km/h is reached and a maximum speed up to 264 km/h obtainable.
Naturally, mtm ensures durability for all its parts. Customers benefit from the extensive experience mtm has gathered for example from the TT bimoto®.

As can be expected, all parts described above for the exhaust system are available seperately for the Audi S3 2.0 TFSI. Either the rear silencer with exhaust flap control alone or together with the complete catalytic converter system. Both tail pipes, each with a diameter of 80 mm, look far more impressive than the series-produced parts. From each excapes a sound that one generally only experiences on the race track.

“Races are won on brakes”

Implimenting power upgrades alone, with complete disregard for adequate deceleration, would be operating completely irresponsibly. For this reason, mtm offers cars of all classes specifically designed brake systems.

In the case of the S3, mtm improves deceleration on the front axle in three upgrades. For the first upgrade, mtm provides the S3 with 8-piston-fixed calipers and 330x32 mm diameter sized semi-perforated brake discs. Even more impressive is the next higher upgrade of completely perforated brake discs with diameter dimension of 356x34mm. They must sustain pressure from 8-piston-brake calipers. Last mentioned, mtm also uses within the largest of the three brake systems. Here the semi-perforated brake discs measure 380x34 mm in diameter and when they are gripped by the calipers, the driver has the feeling of grabbing an anchor. The saying “races are won on brakes” is not to be taken lightly. The racetrack beckons! Every package contains both the steel flex brake lines as well as additional parts. The semi-perforated brake discs are, by the way, a custom-made product from mtm. A unique element for the these discs is the semi-perforations as they do not go through the disc completely. They show optics and characteristics of a completely perforated-through disc, but avoid the normally found crack formations followed by extended use.

Clearly, the standard equipped S3 is an outstanding vehicle. However, those who prefer no comprimises will choose from the mtm price-list a coilover suspension which provides lowering the S3 between 35 and 65mm. Its set-up can be regulated by adjustment of the compression and rebound of the damper. Alternatively, mtm offers shorter sport springs that lower the S3 by 45 mm. For better road holding ability, mtm furnishes spacers for track widening of 20 mm per axle.

In regards to wheels, mtm comes up with its own creation “bimoto”. These spectacular features come in finishes of “shiny silver”, “titanium” and “diamond cut”. mtm offers the “bimoto”-wheels for the S3 in the size 8,5x19” ET50. Additionally available is a wheel set with tyres in the dimensions 235/35ZR19.

The general rule at mtm is “special wishes will be granted”. Modifications can be made on an individual basis!

Roaring 20s Roar Again: Zagato Pens a New Diatto

MILAN, Italy — Italian design house Zagato has revealed its latest in a long line of concept cars. The new concept, called the Ottovu (Italian for 8-V), is a sleek new two-door coupe that's set to make its debut at the Geneva auto show early next month.

The Ottovu has been created to celebrate 100 years of the storied Italian auto brand Diatto, with financial backing coming from two wealthy collectors, according to Zagato.

The once prominent Italian marque, whose customers included the king of Italy and Enzo Ferrari, was closely associated with Zagato during its formative years but has been dormant for many decades. The companies collaborated on the lightweight body for the celebrated Diatto 25 4DS, among other models.

Zagato isn't revealing what the modern-day Diatto is based around, although it appears to some observers to be strongly linked to the Maserati Coupe.

Corvette Readies C6 Coupe Victory Edition for Europe

ZURICH, Switzerland — General Motors will roll out the Corvette C6 Coupe Victory Edition in Europe this March, a vehicle designed to celebrate Corvette Racing victories in such storied venues as the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The automaker said it will only build 250 units of the limited-edition model, which comes with a day of professional instruction at selected racetracks across Europe.
The Victory Edition is equipped with the LS2 6.0-liter V8 that churns out 404 horsepower and 403 pound-feet of torque, linked to a six-speed manual transmission. A six-speed paddle-shift transmission is optional.

The Victory Edition Corvette comes in two race-inspired colors: black or Velocity Yellow. It gets Competition Gray aluminum wheels: 18-inchers in the front and 19s in the rear. A body-color rear spoiler is standard.

The interior has two-tone leather seats with Corvette flag emblems, carbon-look interior trim and a numbered "Victory Edition" badge. Other features include a DVD navigation system and a luxury package that bundles heated seats and a memory package with presets for two drivers. A head-up display includes a G-force meter.

The Corvette Racing team has won more than 50 events, including five class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans between 2001 and 2006.

Audi tuner Hofele-Design presented its new styling kit for the Audi Q7 at the automotive fair Autosalon Geneva 2007.

The styling kit includes a front bumper, side skirts, roof spoiler, air intakes and power dome for the bonnet, wheel arch extensions, rear apron with tailpipes and alloy wheels.

The front bumper includes four additional lights: LED day driving light and a combinatory light for fog lights and cornering light.
The under-ride protection is integrated into the bumper.
A special not provides the front grill from the Audi A8.
This front grill ist rounder than the original Q7 front grill and gives the car the prestige and lines of an upper class limousine.
The especially designed tail pipes, made of stainless steel, are firmly integrated into the rear bumper.
The under-ride protection can be removed to use the trailer coupling

The result are very harmonic lines in the style of the current Audi look.

The parts are mounted to the original fixation points. The attachment is easy-going, fast and requires no adjustments at the car.

Ferrari Enzo Named "Most Iconic" Supercar

LONDON — Ferrari dominated the new Zurich Iconic Car Index, grabbing three of the top 10 spots with the Enzo, 599 GTB F1 Fiorano and 612 Scaglietti. The $827,000 Enzo, of which only a few hundred were built, was chosen "most iconic" of the upper-stratosphere models by a panel of U.K. automotive writers.

The Enzo was followed on the list by the $613,000, V10-powered Porsche Carrera GT, which made its debut in Paris four years ago. Ferrari took 3rd place with its 2006 599 GTB, which is priced at $305,000. The third Ferrari, a $340,000 612 Scaglietti, finished 7th in the voting. To be considered for the poll, vehicles had to cost at least $97,000.

The $344,000 Aston Martin Vanquish grabbed the number-four spot, followed by the $617,000 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. The priciest car on the list is the $1,635,000 Bugatti Veyron, in the number-six spot. Rounding out the list were the $340,500 Lamborghini Murciélago, the $225,000 Bentley Continental GT and the $740,000 Pagani Zonda.

The index is the brainchild of Zurich Private Clients by Motoring Research. Zurich Private Clients provides insurance for buyers of luxury goods, including high-end vehicles.

Suzuki Introduces WagonR Stingray

TOKYO — Suzuki has just introduced its new WagonR variant, the Stingray, a highly derivative model that borrows its name from a legendary Corvette and its face from the outgoing Scion xB. The new WagonR is on sale in Japan.

The base WagonR Stingray is powered by a 54-horsepower 658cc three-cylinder engine. There is also an available turbo version that cranks out 60 horses and a direct-injection turbo that delivers 64 hp.

The latest version of the WagonR gets standard HID lights, a new grille and bumper, an all-black cabin and 14-inch wheels. Black/bronze exterior paint is optional.

Dodge Takes Care of Business With "Super-Sized" 2007 Sprinter

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Dodge rolled out something for its commercial customers today with the debut of a "super-sized" Sprinter commercial van that is longer, taller and wider than the vehicle it replaces.

The Sprinter's interior height gets stretched 11 inches, and the vehicle length grows 30 inches in the redesign. The Sprinter rides on two new wheelbases: 144 inches and 170 inches or 170 inches with a 15-inch-longer rear overhang.

The 2007 Sprinter is powered by a new standard 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel that delivers 154 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. An optional 3.5-liter V6 makes 254 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. All models are equipped with a standard five-speed automatic transmission.

Dodge said all models of the Sprinter get standard 16-inch wheels and standard rack-and-pinion power steering with a new height- and tilt-adjustable steering wheel. The automaker said new sliding cargo doors and rear doors have been developed for numerous versions of the '07 Sprinter. It also features a new "mega-roof" option that provides up to 7 feet of interior height. It comes with either fixed or opening skylights.

New standard features include power windows and locks, integrated wide-angle mirrors, halogen headlights, CD/radio and an adaptive electronic stability program. Upgraded options include a six-disc CD changer and hands-free telephone systems.

The exterior includes the signature Dodge crosshair grille and a selection of 20 exterior paint colors, which Dodge says is the largest variety available in the segment

Dodge Demon Roadster Concept – Simple Soul, Artful Attitude Make for Radical Results

Auburn Hills, Mich., Feb 12, 2007 - The Dodge Demon concept is a compact, nimble “roadster with an attitude,” a perfect balance of classic sports car proportion and simplicity blended with modern design and performance. The vehicle will be shown for the first time at the 77th International Motor Show in Geneva next month.

“While the iconic Dodge Viper is a dream car for many, the Dodge Demon is designed to be an attainable dream car,” said Jae Chung – Dodge Demon Principal Exterior Designer, Chrysler Group. “The exterior design is simple yet bold, featuring an energetic combination of curves and intersecting planes.”

The bodyside of the Dodge Demon main character line flows up and over the front wheel, then drops diagonally to an angular color-keyed vent on the rear fender that directs cooling air to the rear brakes. In similar fashion, the compound rear fender surface curves up and over the rear wheel, sweeping into a broad diagonal plane extending to the taillamp. The resulting muscular fender form projects boldly beyond the main body, underscoring that the Dodge Demon concept is a rear-wheel-drive machine.

The rear surface of the body is divided into three planes with two chamfered outboard planes, dominated by long, tapering trapezoidal taillamps. The taillamps sport translucent red inset lenses that surround LED back-up lamps.

Up front, the signature Dodge crosshair grille is stuffed into an aggressive, menacing, trapezoidal opening that thrusts boldly forward.

Set into elongated angled triangles, the projector headlamps, delineated by bright rings, are set into black chrome bezels, giving the front end mean-looking “eyes” that accentuate the grille opening. Encompassing the upper portions of the front fenders and sporting two recessed air outlets, the Dodge Demon’s hood is hinged at the front, adding a just-for-fun performance-car look and feel.

Featuring an open-spoke design, the wheels are pushed to the corners of the body for a dramatic stance and capable performance. The 19-inch brushed aluminum wheels are set into assertive, asymmetrical openings that reprise the body’s playful combination of curves and planes.

The beltline kicks up at the rear and into the higher deck lid contour, giving the lucky occupants an encapsulated, protective feeling.

“In the manner of timeless British sports cars, the interior of the Dodge Demon is purposely functional, not frivolous,” said Dan Zimmermann – Dodge Demon Principal Interior Designer. “Everything relating to the driving experience is emphasized, while that which is not is made visually secondary.

“The well laid out instrument panel, for example, is familiar, yet modern. Everything you really need – the gauges, circular AC outlets, radio – is encapsulated in a cross-car brushed aluminum bezel that also accentuates the width of the cabin. Secondary controls and features, such as the HVAC knobs and the passenger-side glove box, are located below this bezel,” Zimmermann added.

In a similar functional manner, the floor console is deliberately not a part of, or attached to, the instrument panel. The console is dominated by the squat ready-at-hand silver and black manual shift knob, and its leather boot is set into a bright trim ring. The wide, brushed aluminum console bezel also incorporates the recessed emergency brake handle, with the window switch gear, softly lit cup holders and 12V power outlet organized into a graphically unified shape. The upper portion of the instrument panel, including the cluster brow, is accented by a stitched seam with contrasting silver thread.

“Each of these features is set flush, or nearly flush, with the bezel surface so as to establish a ‘clear zone’ for the driver’s shift arm in all seating positions, with nothing in the way of the driving experience,” Zimmermann said.

The raised plateau at the rear of the console incorporates a covered storage bin – with a lid that serves as an armrest between shifts – while the portion of the console extending under the instrument panel has an open bin handy for incidentals.

The steering wheel employs an aluminum open-spoke design with each of the three spokes intersecting the small circular hub for a timeless sports car look. The wheel rim itself is brushed aluminum on the inside, complemented with stitched vinyl on the outer rim. Immediately forward of the wheel, the four-gauge cluster features classic white-on-black dials with graphics inspired by sports watches. Each circular gauge is set handsomely inside a finely detailed silver and chrome bezel ring, while gauge pointers are colored to match the exterior.

The doors feature durable, vertical grab handles, each anchored to a silver bezel housing the chrome door remote handle. The lower portion of each door features a stylish brushed aluminum bezel that encapsulates the large circular speaker grille and then drops sharply as it moves rearward to form the map pocket outer panel, mimicking a feature line on the car’s exterior.

The Dodge Demon’s seats feature contoured bolsters that are just high enough to provide support when cornering, yet do not hinder ingress or egress. Set in exposed low-gloss carbon fiber shells, the black seats with integral head restraints feature inserts of textured “Momentum” fabric mated to fabric bolsters, with specific sew lines accented by silver thread. Individual brushed aluminum and carbon fiber roll bars are positioned directly behind the bucket seats. With long seat tracks, there is ample storage behind the seats. Additional covered storage is provided in the bulkhead between the seats.

The Dodge Demon concept is an affordable Dodge sports car which merges brand cues of bold design and powerful performance with an open-air “fun-to-drive” attitude.

Aston Martin Vanquish S Ultimate Edition "Black cat"

Aston Martin Vanquish S Ultimate Edition.

If you guessed a limited edition of 40 cars with unique black paint and an interior finished with special leather and black chrome detailing, you'd be absolutely spot on.

There's no added performance for the Ultimate Edition and no price increase, so it will set you back the normal £182,095, although you'd best be quick because Aston says the car's selling like hot cakes.

Another boost to the Vanquish range is the option of a manual gearbox... at long last.

This is available as a conversion from Aston's Works Service division and provides a six-speed manual gearbox in place of the auto with paddles shifts.

More power for Nissan 350Z

Nissan has replaced the heart of its 350Z sports car because it has the technology to do it.
Unlike Steve Austin, the Z is not nuclear powered but has a new 3.5 V6 engine.

So what? It had one before. Not one with 309bhp that revs to 7,500rpm. There's also a boost in torque to 264lb ft.

There's a whole load of technical gubbins gone into making the engine more powerful, but the bottom line is the 350Z is now faster, although Nissan won't tell us by how much until it unveils the car in Geneva.

You'll be able to spot the new version due to an increased bonnet bulge.

There are some fresh paint and interior trim options too, while Bridgestone has developed a new tyre that is quieter while improving grip.

The revised 350Z goes on sale in the UK in May.

Mazda makes to-do about new 2

You could be forgiven for not being aware of the Mazda 2, the firm's Fiesta-based supermini.

For this reason, Mazda is making a big song and dance about the all-new 2 that will be unveiled at the Geneva motor show.

The boxy shape of the current model has been ditched in favour of some seriously sculpted sides and swoopy roofline.

Mazda is also promising a far better driving experience, but is remaining tight-lipped about engines, performance and equipment until the covers come off in Geneva.

Only when you are in the vehicle does the creative alliance between the Peugeot Style Centre and Holland&Holland teams become more apparent. A blend of "Ebony" and "Chartreuse Green" leathers (Holland&Holland colour codes) enhanced by smooth leather edging and original stitching, creates a natural, exclusive and innovative feel. The leather trim covering the passenger compartment is entirely hand-crafted by leather craftsmen from the Peugeot Style Centre. Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion

Volkswagen is getting very blue in the run-up to the Geneva motor show.

Yesterday we reported the start of its blue period with the Polo BlueMotion and now, mere hours later, we have the VW Passat BlueMotion.

Using a 105bhp turbodiesel engine, the Passat manages 55.4mpg combined consumption, which VW says is enough to travel up to 838 miles between fills.

Top speed is 120mph for the saloon and 118mph for the estate.

The downside is that the Passat BlueMotion needs a service every 9,000 miles, which is more often than a standard diesel-powered Passat.

No word on when the Passat BlueMotion will be on sale in the UK yet, but expect another BlueMotion VW to be announced tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after that, and the day...

Volkswagen BlueMotion Polo

Seven hundred miles in a Volkswagen Polo may not sound like everyone's cup of tea, but that's what the BlueMotion Polo will do between fuel stops.

BlueMotion is VW's new ultra-economical brand that will be applied to all of the most fuel-efficient cars in its range.

Not just a boot badge, the Polo BlueMotion's 1.4-litre turbodiesel has been modified to give greater torque at lower revs.

The gearbox has also been altered with longer gearing so the engine spins at lower revs when cruising.

VW has been busy lightening the Polo to get its overall weight down to 1,084kg, while some aerodynamic modifications to the front bumper make it more slippery through the air.

The result is Polo that returns 72.4mpg and produces 102g/km of carbon dioxide.

Performance is not unduly compromised, and the Polo BlueMotion manages 0-62mph in 12.8 seconds and 109mph.

VW will unveil the Polo BlueMotion at next month's Geneva motor show before it goes on sale in the UK this summer.

Duty calls

If you thought the US was going all touchy feely and falling out of love with the pick-up truck, think again.

The biggest, brashest piece of evidence that Americans still love their pick-ups comes in the considerable shape of the Ford Super Duty range.

Looking not too dissimilar to the 2002 concept, which was itself inspired by Tonka toy cars, the Super Duty is pure redneck heaven.

The exterior speaks for itself, while inside Ford has gone for 'tough luxury'.

We're not sure if that means it's supposed to look like Feltham Young Offenders Institute, but what you get is suicide rear doors, chromed ringed instruments and air vent surrounds shaped like gear wheels.

But it's not all bad news. Ford will sell diesel versions of the Super Duty, although there is a considerable $6,895 premium for choosing this.

Somehow, we suspect the good ol' boys will prefer the 5.4-litre V8 or 6.8-litre V10 petrol engines to the measly 6.4-litre V8 turbodiesel, although this is the only engine option in the truly massive F-450 range topper.

Prices in the US are set to range between $23,000 and $60,000, but importing one into the UK may not be the best idea because the car sits at almost 2.5m wide, which is a good bit more than a Lamborghini Murcielago, so you're likely to become very touchy feely with other cars' wing mirrors.

TVRs' New Owner Will Be Named Soon

BLACKPOOL, England — The administrators for English sports-car maker TVR have confirmed that the name of the new owner of the company will be announced on February 23 from a field of about a half-dozen serious bidders.

The move follows an abortive attempt by TVR's former owner, Russian billionaire Nikolai Smolensky, to heavily restructure the company by shifting production from its traditional site in Blackpool, England, to Bertone's coachbuilding operations on the outskirts of Milan, Italy.

Smolensky set about reorganizing the financially embattled company late last year when the lease on TVR's production facilities expired, splitting it into TVR Automotive and Blackpool Engineering. He planned to use TVR Automotive to relaunch the company without any ongoing debts or workforce confrontations. Blackpool Engineering, which was originally thought to only retain the rights to TVR's production facility, was sold and has since been placed into receivership. However, the U.K. patent office now reveals that Blackpool Automotive not only controls TVR's production facilities but also holds the rights to the TVR name, along with a host of other intellectual property, including trademarks to the TVR name in the United Kingdom, Europe and North America. Also under its control is the tooling for TVR's Tuscan, Tamora, Sagaris and T350 models, along with unsold stock of TVR cars and partly built cars.

Among those expressing interest in the company is former TVR engineer Al Melling. Melling designed TVR's classic inline six-cylinder and V8 engines and recently announced plans for his own 1,200-horsepower quad-turbocharged 6.3-liter V10 supercar called the Melling Hellcat.

Established in 1947, TVR is Britain's largest independent sports-car maker. It was founded by Trevor Wilkinson, who used three consonants from his first name for the company name.

9ff Porsche 911 996 9F-V400

Once again, the new world speed record for production road cars is set by Germany. Exactly 5 years, 8 months and 12 days after the record of 386.7 km/h was set by McLaren with its F1, the bar was raised a bit higher.


Jan Fatthauer, owner and chief engineer of 9ff, insisted on steering the record car in person. 388 km/h on the Nardo circuit where McLaren had to give up at 371 km/h when lateral acceleration became too high. 9ff's 9f-V400 based on a Porsche 996 has a power of 840 HP and an 880 NM torque - sufficient power for raising the vehicle above the 400 km/h mark on a straight track. At such a high speed, the real problem is aerodynamics. This is why Jan Fatthauer and his men had to try out various tail fin variants before the record was achieved, so that the record drive automatically was a test drive. Says Fatthauer: "Both tail fins which were used for the record made sure that even at top speed, the car's road holding remained absolutely level and stable".

A special series of 20 vehicles will be produced of the record car 9F-V400.

Fall Out Boy Customizes Honda Civic Hybrid

LOS ANGELES — There's little doubt that the one-off Fall Out Boy Honda Civic Hybrid was inspired by the band's new album, Infinity on High. A quote by Impressionist master Vincent Van Gogh that served as the jumping-off point for the album is emblazoned on the hood in an elaborate script.

It says, "Be clearly aware of the stars and infinity on high. Then life seems almost enchanted after all." Fans of the band and hybrid enthusiasts will find the custom Civic Hybrid up for grabs at www.hondacivictour.com starting February 9.

Honda said it let the band have at the Civic Hybrid and they designed such details as its custom metallic-black-, gunmetal- and silver-flaked paint and graphics. The car also features embroidered hemp upholstery, a custom-painted dash and door panels with Fall Out Boy graphics. Other touches include a custom-made Audix microphone shift knob, factory stereo head unit with a Honda nav system linked to additional speakers, subwoofers and amplifiers by Alpine Electronics. The Fall Out Boy Honda Civic Hybrid also gets 18-inch Konig Sideways racing-inspired rims with Dunlop sport tires, an Eibach Springs lowering suspension and a Honda Factory Performance Aero Kit and polished exhaust tip.

In yet another link to the band, the winner will get a Honda Civic Tour Fall Out Boy audio clip system from Ridetones that includes personalized messages from bassist Pete Wentz, as well as music clips from the band.

"Some of us in the band drive Hondas, so it's insane to be able to give a customized Fall Out Boy Civic Hybrid to our fans," said Wentz.

The EPA says the 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid gets 51 mpg in city driving and 49 mpg on the highway.

Citroën Enters SUV Fray With C-Crosser Debut

PARIS — It's a first for French automaker Citroen. The company announced on Friday that the centerpiece of its display at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show next month will be the turbodiesel C-Crosser, the company's first sport-utility vehicle.

The seven-passenger C-Crosser, which will feature a 156-horsepower 2.2 HDi engine, will hit showrooms in Europe this summer. The engine produces a Texas-style 280 pound-feet of torque and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Citroen said the C-Crosser is able to run on 30-percent biodiesel.

Drivers will have a choice of three transmission settings: two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive and a lock setting.

In the cabin, the seats have a modular design to provide a flat load floor. The French SUV boasts some 20 storage compartments and a split-opening tailgate. Optional equipment includes a rear camera.

Prices have not yet been announced.

Peugeot Hits Hard With a Trifecta of World Premieres

GENEVA — Peugeot announced on Friday that its lineup at the upcoming 77th International Motor Show in Geneva will feature the worldwide debut of three vehicles, including the 207SW Outdoor Concept, a sleek-looking crossover that hints at a future production model.

The French automaker released a sketch of the 207SW Outdoor Concept, which features a panoramic glass roof, a split-opening rear hatch, bluish chrome exterior touches, and parachute-type fabric trim in the cabin.

Peugeot and Citroën are treading into SUV territory in Geneva: Citroën with its C-Crosser and Peugeot with the new 4007, a 4x4 all-terrain vehicle. The 4007 was developed in partnership with Mitsubishi and is powered by a new 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine that produces 156 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. The automaker will show a second version of the 4007 by Holland & Holland that features bronze exterior paint, 20-inch alloy wheels and a cabin outfitted with jet black and chartreuse green leather and black chrome.

The Peugeot 207GTi THP 175, a collaboration between PSA Peugeot Citroën and BMW Group, will also make its world premiere in Geneva. The 207GTi features a 1.6-liter THP (turbo high-pressure) gas engine with turbo direct injection. It produces 175 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque.

Can-Am Spyder: Sports Car With Three Wheels?

VALCOURT, Canada — Bombardier has announced production of the 2008 Can-Am Spyder, a dramatic three-wheel vehicle that is part motorcycle, part snowmobile and part sports car.

Powered by a 106-horsepower DOHC, 990cc Rotax V-twin, the Spyder offers the kind of high-speed motoring that should appeal to car enthusiasts as well as motorcycle riders. The chassis is set up with two steering wheels in front and a single shaft-driven wheel behind. The rider is seated as if on a motorcycle and steers the 697-pound (dry) Spyder via a handlebar.

Two different transmissions are available: a sequential five-speed manual and an electronically actuated sequential five-speed manual. Both include a reverse gear.

The front wheels are located with double wishbone-type control arms and afford 5.7 inches of suspension travel. The rear wheel is located by a motorcycle-style swingarm and monoshock, and also has 5.7 inches of travel. The 14-inch front wheels carry 165/65R14 tires while the rear tire is a 225/50R15.

The Can-Am Spyder looks like a futuristic snowmobile with wheels, yet it has some of the sophisticated technology of a sports car. Power steering, antilock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution and electronic stability control with anti-rollover technology are part of the package.
The Can-Am Spyder is scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. this fall at a price of $14,999.

GM Announces Holden VE Commodore SS's Trip to U.S.

MELBOURNE, Australia — General Motors staged simultaneous two-continent announcements that its Holden VE Commodore SS will be sold in the United States starting in 2008 as the Pontiac G8.

Bob Lutz, GM's chairman for North America and vice-chairman for product development, made the announcement at the Chicago auto show, while the Holden half was held up by chairman and managing director Denny Mooney at Holden's Port Melbourne headquarters.

Mooney emphasized that the decision to send the VE Commodore to the U.S. market as a Pontiac reinforces Holden's position in the GM structure. He added that the export plans confirm that the "VE Commodore is a vehicle designed and engineered to appeal to both local and overseas markets" and "highlights GM Holden's rear-wheel-drive expertise globally."

The new Pontiac will come in G8 and G8 GT models, both with a 362-horsepower 6.0-liter V8 mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

Just think how good it would look with a field of hot hatches charging round British racing circuits.

The GTi is in the American series use standard 197bhp engines coupled to DSG sequential manual gearboxes.

Performance is enhanced with race-tuned suspension and stripped-out interiors, while safety is taken care of with roll cages, fire extinguisher, and racing seat and harness.

The series doesn't kick off in the US until 2008, so how about it VW? Just divert those cars over here and we'll run them in for you.
