2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

In what is the clearest proof yet that paying attention to your rear view mirrors pays dividends, we noticed this virtually uncamouflaged Shelby GT500 sidle up next to us in the left turn lane at a stoplight in the snowy Detroit suburb of Royal Oak. When you live in Detroit and you write about cars, you have a camera in the car at all times, and since the guy was caught in traffic, the photographic onslaught was on.

We did our best to give chase but there was no way to do it safely, with the super-Shelbyfied 'stang taking off on a left turn faster than we could figure out where he took off too. We're imagining he called in the transport truck and disappeared Spy Hunter style. In any case, the new GT500 shares a lot of the styling elements of the current car with double vents on the hood, a huge aggressive upper and lower grille plus the not-so-subtle stripes on the hood.

What's new is the smoothly styled rear spoiler which compliments the new back-end. Check out those stylish new wheels. Pretty cool looking, huh? But what does it sound like? Sounds a lot like the current one, nice throaty exhaust with a tinge of cockle-stirring supercharger whine. We expect the new GT500 to drop at the Detroit Auto Show in January and yes, we'll be there to see it live.

Ford Mustang, the country's best-selling sports car for 22 consecutive years and one of the auto industry's most successful nameplates ever, celebrates its 45th anniversary with a new panoramic glass roof option that opens the world to pony-car enthusiasts from Maine to Maui and all points between. The segment first, factory-installed glass roof is available as a $1,995 option on Mustang V-6 and GT models.

The glass roof joins the coupe and convertible to give Mustang customers three roof choices. It also addresses the fact that 62 percent of buyers in the sports car segment are interested in a sunroof or moonroof on their next vehicle, according to J.D. Power and Associates research. Mustang's new roof allows customers to let the sun shine in for half the price of moving up from a coupe to a convertible.

While allowing occupants an unrestricted view of the world above and around them, the special tinted, reflective glass reduces energy used by the vehicle's air conditioning system by 20 percent and also protects the interior fabric from fading and deteriorating. A manually operated roller blind allows owners to block the light on bright days.

For 2009, Ford has also added more standard equipment to the popular "Premium" arrays offered on both the Mustang V-6 and GT, including SIRIUS® Satellite Radio, ambient lighting, satin aluminum instrument panel trim and upgraded interior trim.

A new, optional GT Security Package includes an active anti-theft system and wheel locking kit and Brilliant Silver clear coat metallic joins the list of available Mustang exterior colors.

2009 Ford Mustang AV8R

(from Ford Press Release) One-of-a-kind aviation-themed Mustang will be auctioned to aid Gathering of Eagles youth aviation initiatives, continuing Ford's commitment to the program. Performance modifications from Ford Racing will generate 400 horsepower.

DEARBORN, Mich., July 23, 2008 - The numbers tied to the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture Oshkosh are impressive, if not overwhelming - but there's one statistic especially worth eyeing.

Some 2,500 show aircraft and 650,000 visitors are expected at this year's meet, which runs from Monday - Aug. 3. An estimated 10,000 airplanes are expected to fly in to the airport in east-central Wisconsin. And here's the kicker: The event will feature one cool Ford Mustang.

A special one-of-a-kind AirVenture Mustang, the Mustang AV8R, will be unveiled on Sunday. The classic American car was named after the famous P-51 Mustang fighter, which played a key role in World War II as a bomber escort. Several P-51s are slated to be at Oshkosh, according to the show's web site, www.airventure.org.

The team at Ford Racing helped develop the aviation-inspired Mustang AV8R. Special features on the 2009 Mustang GT include a glass roof, which is a new option on Mustangs this year; special front and rear fascias; integrated spoiler; and Shelby GT500 wheels. Ford Racing's contributions include a handling pack (dampers, lowering springs, anti-roll bar kit and strut tower brace), supercharger and tuned exhaust that will generate 400 horsepower from the aluminum block 4.6-liter, 24-valve V-8 engine.

The Mustang AV8R is painted in Satin Silver matte paint with Black Gloss accents. The interior features distressed "bomber jacket" leather inserts and trim panels along with a "Bullitt" aluminum instrument panel appliquй and shift knob. It also has an appliquй autograph area for the aviation legends and notable enthusiasts scheduled to be in attendance, who include Edsel B. Ford II, Chuck Yeager, Jack Roush, Harrison Ford, John Travolta, Morgan Freeman and Jim Lovell.

Donating the Mustang AV8R is the latest example of Ford's continuing commitment to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Last year, Ford donated two tickets to the finals of "American Idol," which sold for $16,500. Ford and Shelby Automobiles donated a Mustang Shelby GT-H in 2006, which sold for $250,000.

What's New for 2008
More features are added to the 2008 Ford Mustang. This includes standard front seat side airbags, available xenon headlights and, for the V6 models, 18-inch alloy wheels. Man O' War, Sea Biscuit, Secretariat. Along with those legendary thoroughbreds, one might include another steed famous for thrilling its fans for nearly half a century: the Ford Mustang. Through the decades, the Mustang has survived oil crises, ever-tougher emissions standards, corporate shake-ups and Americans' diminished interest in sporty coupes thanks to an infatuation with SUVs and pickup trucks. While other so-called pony car rivals have been sent to the glue factory, the original has gotten stronger and more popular.

Ford will continue the relentless march of new Mustang variants in 2009 with a new glass-roofed edition of the Mustang that clearly bridges the gap between the current Mustang hardtop and convertible.

In 2009 - its 45th year on the market - the Mustang will come in V-6 and GT editions once more, and both will offer the glass roof as a $1995 option.

Ford cites research showing longer commute times and higher percentages of sunroof installations as its inspiration for the Porsche-like roof - that, and the data point J.D. Power reports, which has 62 percent of sportscar buyers interested in a sunroof.

The glass itself is tinted for privacy, and can cut UV in the cabin enough to cool the 'Stang 50 percent quicker than non-tinted glass. A sunshade is built into the roof for sun-scared drivers. Structurally, the glass roof mounts in a frame that's based on the coupe Mustang. And the glass-roof coupes will be built alongside both the hardtop and convertible in Flat Rock, Mich.

Ford also will sell the new $31,075, 315-hp Bullitt Mustang and the Shelby GT500KR in 2009. The Shelby edition packs in 540 horsepower and is limited to 1000 copies.

McQueen's Ford Mustang

Ford is due to unveil its special edition Mustang at next week's Los Angeles motor show.

Designed to commemorate Steve McQueen's legendary turn in the 1968 movie Bullitt, this dark highland green version boasts a 4.6-litre V8 that kicks out 315bhp - 15 more than the regular one - as well as chassis, suspension and brake upgrades.

It also features some other very cool touches, including a Bullitt filler cap and debadged grill, just like police detective Frank Bullitt's original.

The exhaust note has even been modelled on the sound heard in the movie, from a specially mastered DVD.

7,700 will be produced, starting early in 2008.

Ford To Cut Options and Packages on 2008 Explorer, Mustang and Navigator

Buyers of the 2007 Ford Mustang V6 had 16,000 buildable combinations of options and colors. But when the 2008 Mustang V6 hits showrooms in August, it will only come in 200 buildable combinations, Ford told Inside Line.
In most cases, the changes should be relatively minor. The base 2008 Mustang V6 will not be available with spinners on the 16-inch wheels, for instance. You'll only be able to get a plain 16-inch wheel. The Mustang V6 will also only be available in 10 exterior colors instead of the 11 that were offered in 2007. Gone are such exterior color choices as "screaming yellow" and "legend lime," to be replaced with a new lineup that includes dark candy apple red.

Side airbags, which were standard on some '07 versions of the Mustang V6 and optional on others, are now standard across the V6 line for 2008. A Mustang V6 Safety and Security Package bundles traction control, antilock brakes, an anti-theft system and wheel-locking kits for 2008, instead of offering each item as a stand-alone option.

"The number of options you can select will be smaller to reduce the cost at the factory," said Ford spokesman Jim Cain. "The goal isn't to take anything away from anybody. It's to give them the vehicle they want and to make it simpler for the dealer and the plant."

The same tactic will be used for the 2008 Explorer and Navigator, due out later this summer. The '08 Explorer, for example, eliminates molded-in color bumper fascias. But Cain said they were the grayish-black plastic exterior trim that few customers seemed to want anyway. He said Navigator will have an unspecified number of fewer buildable combinations and "more standard equipment."

The new approach is the brainchild of Ford CEO Alan Mulally, who is on a quest to reduce manufacturing complexity as part of the automaker's turnaround plan. Toyota and other Japanese automakers have traditionally offered fewer choices, letting customers pick just a few things on a vehicle, such as engine size, cloth or leather interior, and exterior color.

The wild card in the strategy to cut options and packages is the Ford F-150. Cain said the automaker is "unsure" about whether to limit choices with the truck that has staked its reputation on customization potential. "Part of the reason we can sell it in the volumes we do is because we have so many configurations," he said. "You need to be able to tailor the vehicle more individually."
