Audi TT Speedster CGI

Loosely based on the TT Clubsport concept, the Audi TT Speedster represents the TT in its purist driving form.

Drawing inspiration from the classic drop-top, the TT Speedster features a pillar-less low-slung panoramic windscreen and roll-over bars which protrude no higher than the sports bucket seats to retain its low stance.

If it ever arrives in showrooms, expect Audi’s venerable Quattro all-wheel-drive system coupled with a 2.0-litre TFSI engine pushing the 220kW mark.

The possible small-series production of the TT Speedster is being considered by Audi.

Audi opens the order book on hottest TT ever

Prices are out on the hottest Audi TT ever - the 268bhp TT-S, and as you'd guess, it's no steal.

We brought you all the details on the lower, harder TT just before Christmas, and today Audi has opened the order book, with prices starting at £33,380 for the coupe.

That puts it on the steep side of a three-litre BMW Z4, and that's before you've specced the S-tronic flappy-paddle gearbox, which'll take you beyond 35 grand.

Fancy the convertible? That'll be two grand over the coupe, sir.

Steep stuff, but don't forget that the TT-S will be quick enough to eat the Cayman S or Boxster S from the lights. It's a fight we look forward to staging later this year.

2009 Audi TTS – Detroit Auto Show

Audi couldn't quite wait 'til Detroit to show its production-bound TTS - the much-anticipated high-performance version of the TT line that also marks the TT's tenth anniversary.

Most notably, there's a lot more power under the hood, a 2.0-liter 'TFSI' four-cylinder engine that makes 272 horsepower. The engine, according to Audi, takes gasoline direct injection and turbocharging and "blends them to form a perfect partnership." Peak torque is an impressive (for a 2.0-liter four) 258 pound-feet, between 2500 and 5000 rpm. With the new engine tune and extra power, the two-liter has also been strengthened and extensively reengineered, and the intercooler has been optimized, with maximum turbocharger boost dialed up to 17.4 psi - exceptionally high for a production vehicle.

A six-speed manual is standard-equipment for Europe, but all U.S. models get the available six-speed S tronic DSG gearbox - which shifts faster than a standard automatic transmission - cuts the zero-to-62-mph time by two tenths of a second. S tronic now also has a new pressure reservoir for the DSG unit's multi-plate clutch system allows it to pull off shifts even faster.With the S tronic, the TTS Coupe will be able to accelerate from zero to 62 mph in only 5.2 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. Accelerating from 80 to 120 mph in fourth gear takes only 4.4 seconds - a testament to the engine's broad torque curve.

U.S. pricing has not yet been announced, but based on the European prices mentioned in Audi's release (Coupe starting at 44,900 euros), the U.S. Coupe will likely start in the upper $40k range. The TTS will go on sale in early summer for Europe, late November for the U.S., as a 2009 model.

2008 Audi TT Roadster

Driving in the mountains of the French Cote d'Azur is an unexpected December treat - especially when the sun shines warmly and the top of your suave roadster is down.

Audi lucked out with the world introduction of its Audi TT Roadster, in getting Europe's warmest winter in years. And while Audi can't control the weather, they can control the elements that go into a great convertible - and the new topless TT proves they can do it well.

Coming to America
The second generation of Audi's new sports car arrived earlier this year, and impressed us with its matured looks and with the excellent handling of both models - the front-wheel-driven 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder and the 3.2-liter V-6 with quattro all-wheel drive.

Both engines will be available in the 2008 TT Roadster that is expected to hit the North American market in September.

Both engines are a delight. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four delivers 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque, and is teamed to a six-speed manual gearbox, while the sequential automatic six-speed S-Tronic transmission will be available. It's a muscular four-cylinder with one of the most linear power deliveries of any turbo powerplant we know.

The 3.2-liter six-cylinder has 250 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque and has the S-tronic transmission (formerly DSG) standard. Its growl is considerably throatier than the turbo four, and it does deliver some additional power, along with a hefty increase in price.
