2010 Toyota Camry makes its debut at Detroit

Considered by some of us the best-selling passenger car in the United States, the new 2010 Toyota Camry was officially unveiled today at the 2009 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

Scheduled to go on sale in March this year, the 2010 Camry and Camry Hybrid come with a new exterior styling, performance, safety, audio and convenience features. Featuring an upgraded standard powertrain for 2010 the new vehicle comes with a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine equipped with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) capable to deliver 160 hp for Camry, LE and XLE grades.

For the SE grade the powerplant delivers 179 hp while for those who want even more power, the Japanese manufacturer offers a 3.5-liter V6 delivering 268 horsepower. All the three engines can be connected to a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift.

Toyota CNG Camry Hybrid Concept at the LA Auto Show

The LA Auto Show marks the debut of the Toyota CNG Camry Hybrid Concept which highlights the Japanese carmaker’s new Hybrid Synergy Drive system. The concept was developed by TMS Advanced Product Strategy group and built by Metal Crafters of Fountain Valley, California, who replaced the 2.4 liter gasoline fuel system with a CNG (compressed natural gas) system including two CNG tanks installed in the spare tire well area.

The concept also received some exterior changes, like a new front fascia and front bumper cover that got rid of the grill opening, custom rear bumper covering the tail pipe and the exhaust system, new side skirts and 19 inch alloy wheels fitted with run-flat.

2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid

The Hybrid has been in the Camry lineup since model year 2007. It's one of the three top-level models in that line, along with the luxury-oriented XLE and sporty SE. Base Camry and mid-level LE grades fill out the lineup, with the base, no-name Camry a new addition this year, replacing the previous CE.

A 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and commendable fuel economy is the standard engine in all except the hybrid, which has a modified version of that unit allied with an electric motor in Toyota's full-hybrid Hybrid Synergy Drive system. The 187 maximum system horsepower slots between the standard four and the 3.5-liter, 268-horsepower V6 optional for the LE, SE, and XLE.

The Camry Hybrid's powertrain gives it good performance for everyday use. Acceleration for merging into traffic is never inadequate, thanks to the strong and instant torque boost available from the electric motor, and magnetic drag from regenerative braking helps slow the car under deceleration. As in other Toyota (and Lexus) hybrids, the Camry Hybrid's engine is an Atkinson cycle unit, meaning that internal modifications are made to improve efficiency, at the expense of maximum power output. Compare its 147 horsepower (at 6000 rpm) and 138 lb-ft of torque (at 4400 rpm) with the similarly-sized regular Camry four-cylinder's 158 hp and 161 lb-ft. But the decreased power is made moot by assistance from the electric motor, with a maximum output of 105 kW (141 hp) and 199 lb-ft of torque.

That torque is from 0 through 1500 rpm - as soon as the motor kicks in. Output from the engine and motor is sent to the front wheels through a complex electronically-controlled continuously-variable transmission, and it's hard to tell the power source without looking at the animated diagram on the dash. Engine noise is only noticeable under full-throttle acceleration, and under light throttle or in electric mode the Camry Hybrid is virtually silent. Further improvement in fuel economy comes from the engine automatically shutting off when the car comes to a stop, as at a light. It restarts when the brake is released or the accelerator is pressed.

Toyota may build more Camrys at truck plant

Automotive times are a-changin, as fuel-efficient cars are now outselling trucks by a wide margin. Toyota's flexible manufacturing capabilities allow it to adjust to these crazy times, and the Japanese automaker is discussing a plan to build still more Camrys at its Indiana truck plant. The Princeton plant is only running two shifts right now, and its trucks and SUVs are suffering just as much as similar offerings coming out of Detroit.

That makes the plant a great fit for the Camry, which sold an astonishing 51,291 units last month. Honda has already decided to increase production of the Civic, which was the top-selling vehicle in the US last month with over 53,000 units leaving the showroom floor.

What's New for 2008
The 2008 Toyota Camry Solara coupe and convertible are unchanged.

Introduction
Usually, the two-door variants within a model line are flashier and sportier than their four-door counterparts. This was true of the Toyota Camry Solara coupe and convertible right after they were redesigned back in 2004. Since then, though, they've been upstaged by the Camry sedan, which grew more powerful in last year's overhaul. The injustice continues into 2008, as the Solara siblings stand pat while winds of change swirl around them. Rival import-brand manufacturers have launched better-performing, edgier-looking coupes, and relatively affordable hardtop convertibles are crowding into soft-top Solara price territory.

The Solara's diminishing appeal is due at least in part to its exterior styling, which although curvy and sophisticated, has never come across as trendy or youthful. This is particularly true when you look at the car from the back, as the rear deck appears to droop on both the coupe and the convertible. Another issue is the car's lack of verve once you're behind the wheel. The Solara coupe is fairly quick when equipped with the V6, but in the heavier convertible the engine's modest low-end torque and the transmission's slow responses noticeably detract from performance. And although handling is stable and predictable, the Camry Solara is not the sort of car you'll revel in driving briskly, given its soft suspension and minimal steering feedback.

Powertrains and Performance
The standard engine for the Toyota Camry Solara coupe is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder rated at 157 horsepower and 158 pound-feet of torque. It can be paired with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission, either of which drives the front wheels. Optional on Solara coupes and standard on convertibles is a 3.3-liter V6 rated for 210 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed automatic is standard with the V6. The EPA rates four-cylinder coupes at 21-22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Upgrade to the V6 and you're looking at an 18/27 rating in the coupe and 18/26 in the convertible.
