Honda Remix and Step Bus Target Gen Y

LOS ANGELES — Honda Motor Company isn't known for flights of fancy.
But two Honda vehicles making their debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, described by the Japanese automaker as "purely design concepts," push the boundaries of conventional thinking in the auto industry.

honda remixhonda step busDesigned at Honda R&D Americas' advanced studio in Southern California, the potato-shaped Remix is a small, lightweight two-seat sports car that is intended for use as a daily driver. It boasts a wraparound canopy and an ample rear cargo bay, and sits on a front-wheel-drive platform with a front-mounted four-cylinder engine and six-speed gearbox.

The Step Bus was created in Japan at Honda R&D's Wako design center. The mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive concept seats five and features a tall roof and a reconfigurable cabin to adapt to different lifestyles. It comes with sliding front doors and offers probably the most cavernous possible interior in the smallest possible exterior package.

Among the highlights of the modular cockpit are tracks in the door that can hold mobile phones, soda cans and more. A storage tray is mounted in the ceiling.

2007 Lotus Sport Exige Cup

(from Lotus Press Release) Lotus Cars USA, the subsidiary of Lotus Cars in North America, today unveiled the MY2007 Lotus Sport Exige Cup. Unveiled at the Los Angeles International Auto Show, the 252 hp, supercharged and intercooled sportscar is a completely out-of-the-box track car with a specification designed to prepare the budding driver for the grid at some of the finest and most challenging circuits in North America.

2007 Lotus Sport Exige Cup2007 Lotus Sport Exige Cup 22007 Lotus Sport Exige Cup 32007 Lotus Sport Exige Cup 4 Weight has been kept to an ultra low 1800 pounds and the phenomenal power to weight ratio has been further enhanced by increasing the power output from 243 hp to 252 hp. Weight saving (or adding lightness!) has been achieved through the effective use of lightweight materials and through the eradication of all non-essential components such roof trim, carpets, front mudflaps, central locking and bulkhead trim. Of course just having fantastic power to weight doesn’t make a car a high performer on the track, so the Lotus Sport Exige Cup has a list of standard equipment that includes track only slick tires, uprated 4-piston front brakes, adjustable dampers and adjustable anti-sway bar, the latest SCCA-compliant roll cage, FIA approved Lotus Sport branded driver’s seat with six-point driver harness (there is no passenger seat) and a lightweight rear screen (instead of glass). The options are even more race focused with a FIA approved 70 litre fuel cell, air-jack system and level two stainless steel exhaust with de-cat pipe, a plate type limited slip differential and Star Shield.

The Lotus Sport Exige Cup is one of the quickest cars around a circuit. Key to this incredible performance is the aerodynamic package, which produces over 90 pounds of downforce at 100 mph increasing grip and ultimately safety at higher speeds.

With a top speed of close to 160 mph and a zero to 100 mph slingshot in just less than 9.8 seconds (the 60 mph sprint takes just under 3.9 seconds), the MY2007 Lotus Sport Exige Cup is the perfect partner to a serious track day enthusiast. Even the most exotic supercars would struggle to keep up! At a MSRP of just $84,990, plus options, delivery and taxes, customer will have to queue on a first ordered, first delivered basis.

Further details about the Lotus Sport Exige Cup:

Engine

The supercharged and intercooled engine in the Lotus Sport Exige Cup has a maximum power output of 252 hp at 8000 rpm and a torque figure of approximately 179 lb-ft, at 7000 rpm. This vast amount of extra power and torque now available means that the cam change between the low-speed cam and the high-speed cam is variable to ensure that there is a smooth and linear surge of power from low engine speeds all the way to the maximum 8000 rpm. The Roots-type Eaton M62 supercharger (with a sealed-for-life internal mechanism meaning that it does not require the use of the engine’s oil) is run from the crankshaft and has an integral bypass valve for part load operation. Charge air (air under pressure from the supercharger) is cooled through an air-to-air intercooler (the cooling air enters via the roof scoop) before being fed into the engine itself. All charge air ducting has been kept as short as possible with large diameter pipes making sure that the bends in these ducts are not too tight, to the benefit of throttle response and efficiency. Four high capacity injectors add additional fuel under hard acceleration or high speed driving.

A sports-type clutch plate and heavy duty clutch cover transfers the engine power and torque to the lightweight C64 six-speed gearbox (with an aluminum casing) – with the same perfectly spaced ratios as the Exige S. A plate type limited slip differential is fitted as an option as is the Lotus switchable traction control system (LTCS). The LTCS system works through the engine, reducing power to maintain traction, is active above 5 mph and operates much more quickly than many brake-based systems.

An Accusump (engine oil accumulator unit) is included in the whole package as an oil reservoir backup for extreme track use ensuring that, under these conditions, the engine oil pressure remains constant.

Twin oil coolers complete the powertrain package.

Wheels and Tires

5-spoke lightweight forged alloy wheels in silver are shod with Lotus specific Yokohama slick tires to maximise grip and achieve the ride and handling targets set by Lotus.

Brakes

The brake system includes large diameter 308 mm 2-piece aluminum belled cross drilled and
ventilated front discs and 282 mm cross-drilled and ventilated discs at the rear, upgraded Pagid RS14 sports brake pads set into the brake calipers (AP Racing two piece radially mounted, 4 piston at the front and Brembo sliding at the rear), high grade silicone brake fluid, stainless steel braided brake hoses all linked to the proven Lotus track tuned servo-assisted four-channel ABS system that enhances braking performance and minimising stopping distance without taking over from the skill of the driver.

Safety Equipment

The Lotus Sport Exige Cup cars have the safety equipment that is expected for a track car with 6-point seat belt harness on the driver’s side (with an FIA approved Recaro / Lotus Sport seat) – there is no passenger seat. The full roll cage is SCCA compliant and completing the additional safety equipment is a mechanical ignition kill switch with cockpit and external activation and a plumbed electrical fire suppression system, again with cockpit and external activation.

Exhaust System

A “Level One” stainless steel sports exhaust is fitted with the bifurcated exhaust pipes exiting from the centre of the anodized-finished 3-piece rear diffuser. A “Level Two” stainless steel exhaust with de-cat pipe is a no cost option.

Option costs:

FIA approved 70 litre fuel cell – $3095
Lotus Sport limited slip differential (plate type) – $1595
Lotus Traction Control System – $495
Air jack system (special conditions apply) – $5495
Air-conditioning – $2495
Metallic paint – $590
Lifestyle Paint – $1200
Star Shield protection – $995.

VW Tiguan Concept Makes Debut

LOS ANGELES — Volkswagen has pulled the wraps off a new concept car that previews its upcoming Tiguan SUV. Set to go on sale in North America in 2008, the new five-seater is aimed directly at the popular Toyota RAV4.

VW Tiguan ConceptVW Tiguan Concept 2VW Tiguan Concept 3This one is less radical than the earlier, coupelike Concept A from the Geneva Motor Show last March, which announced Volkswagen's plans to enter the burgeoning compact-SUV market. The Tiguan sports a more conventional two-box silhouette similar to that of its larger four-wheel drive sibling, the Touareg.

The car on display in L.A. this week provides a good glimpse of what the production version of the Tiguan will look like when it reaches North American showrooms in just over a year. However, Volkswagen insiders say its appearance will be toned down further by then.

The Tiguan is slightly shorter, narrower and lower than the Touareg, which is set to grow in size to accommodate a third row of seats when a planned second-generation model arrives in 2009.

Inside, the Tiguan borrows heavily from Volkswagen's Europe-only Golf Plus. The two share the same dashboard structure, instrument pack and switchgear, although the concept car on display in L.A. has been heavily upgraded with leather, a sport steering wheel and upmarket materials. The production Tiguan is set to have more cost-effective soft plastic surfaces along with a variety of optional trims, including wood and aluminum, in line with the larger Touareg.

The Tiguan is underpinned by a lightly modified version of Volkswagen's versatile PQ35 platform structure, as used by the Golf, with a front MacPherson-strut and rear multilink suspension. The ride height on production versions likely won't be quite as extreme as that of the concept on display in L.A., although Volkswagen says the newcomer's optional Haldex-style four-wheel-drive system gives the Tiguan the ability to head off-road.

VW is tight-lipped about the power source behind its latest concept, except to say it is a new diesel engine planned for production in 2008. Inside Line can confirm, however, that it is a transversely mounted 16-valve 2.0-liter four-cylinder common-rail unit. The engine uses the latest Bluetec technology — its special catalytic converter is periodically injected with urea to reduce nitrogen oxide levels by up to 90 percent over the existing pump injector engine offered throughout Europe.
Other engines planned for North America include the 200-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder direct-injection unit now used in the Golf GTI. The new power plant will be in the North American lineup; it is planned to make its debut in early 2008 under the name Clean TDI.

Hyundai Rolls Out 2+2 Hellion Concept

LOS ANGELES — Korean automaker Hyundai rolled out its quirky Hellion concept at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Wednesday, describing the compact three-door crossover as a vehicle that brings "a new attitude to the Hyundai family."

Hyundai 2+2 Hellion ConceptHyundai 2+2 Hellion Concept 2Hyundai 2+2 Hellion Concept 3 The company said the Hellion's architecture was inspired by a "tough, hard-shell backpack that uses ribs to provide structural and visual strength."

These ribs connect to a suspended "surfboard-shaped spine." The vehicle is powered by a 236-horsepower 3.0-liter common-rail diesel engine linked to a six-speed automatic transmission. Features include a removable canvas sliding soft top and a tilt front hood. The all-wheel-drive crossover is outfitted in a Dakar Gold paint scheme and has a "black desert night" cabin with glossy white accents and matte aluminum details.

Other unique touches include seat-mounted gear packs that transform into fully functional backpacks via push-button releases. The bucket seats have a "hydration system" that includes a removable, refillable reservoir inside each seat to replace the "common" cupholder.

The fluids are accessed by a pump-assisted flow tube attached to each seat, providing passengers with "hands-free" hydration. Someone must have been inspired by those corny beer hats with elaborate tubing that you can buy at football games.

2006 Ford Mustang Giugiaro Concept

(from Ford Press Release) The 2005 Ford Mustang captured the hearts and minds of millions of fans and future owners when the all-new model debuted. But the proportions and design of Ford’s first purpose-built muscle car in 30-plus years caught the eyes and sparked the imaginations of a pair of the world’s leading coachbuilders in Italy as well.

2006 Ford Mustang Giugiaro Concept
2006 Ford Mustang Giugiaro Concept 22006 Ford Mustang Giugiaro Concept 32006 Ford Mustang Giugiaro Concept 42006 Ford Mustang Giugiaro Concept 5“When we saw the new Mustang, we knew two things: It was the best we’d seen since the original, and we had to get our hands on one,” said Fabrizio Giugiaro, styling director of Italdesign – Giugiaro S.P.A. “We still believe it’s important to show the automotive world pure exercises in style that interpret key models reflecting the history and image of important brands.”

So in early 2005, Giugiaro pitched J Mays, Ford Motor Company’s group vice president, Design and chief creative officer, on his idea to do an Italian job on the beloved Mustang. The result: Mustang by Giugiaro – a one-of-a-kind concept powered by Ford Racing technologies, marking the Italian coachbuilder’s first reveal at the inaugural November Los Angeles Auto Show.

“It seemed only fitting,” said Mays. “This design study reinforces the global appeal of Mustang, yet it’s right at home in L.A. – America’s most enthusiastic performance and muscle car market. Plus, design icon Giorgetto Giugairo’s offer to work his magic on Mustang alongside his son underscores the timelessness allure of Ford’s most iconic car.”

Design aficionados will remember that the senior Giugiaro – who last year celebrated his 50th anniversary in the business by designing a custom-made Ferrari, the GG50 – created the 1965 Bertone Mustang. The car, which was unmistakably Italian in its interpretation, became the first European-styled car to make its international debut in America following the end of World War II.

The senior Giugiaro’s portfolio includes concept and production designs for nearly every automaker in the world – from Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Volkswagen to Mazda, Lotus and Bugatti. Since joining ItalDesign, the family firm, in 1990, Fabrizio Giugiaro has helped deliver key global designs as well, but American automotive icons have long captured his attention.

He designed the Chevrolet Corvette Moray, unveiled in early 2003, and was eager to expand the collection of Giugiaro-interpreted American metal.

Fabrizio Giugiaro led the 2-D design process on the Mustang by Giugiaro concept, allowing him to deliver a complete exterior model from the family’s Turin, Italy, studios in just four months.

Visually, the Mustang by Giugiaro appears more compact than the production car, thanks to a reduction of the rear overhang and a signature Giugiaro “trick” of tapering the angles on the car to the limit of its mechanical outlines.

Still, the Italian version of America’s most popular muscle car hasn’t lost any of its swagger.

The vibrant orange concept is wider than the production version. The Giugiaros added 30 millimeters to the front, gradually expanding the width by a full 80 millimeters toward the rear, which is typical in Italian design.

With its longer hood and the trunk barely visible, the car looks more of a fastback in side view. But details throughout reinforce the freedom and rebellion synonymous with Mustang. Fabrizio Giugiaro’s favorites include:

The interior – featuring a dramatic instrument panel that sweeps the width of the car; circular gauges that project from behind the steering wheel; dark brown horsehide-covered headrests with horse logo accents; and seat cushions and backrests elaborately upholstered in dark brown mottled horse hides.
The single curved glass panel that bridges the windshield and rear window, serving as the concept’s roof. Produced by Solutia of Detroit, the panel is made from a special type of crystal that filters out 100 percent of UVA rays while providing unfettered vista views.

Its dramatic doors, which are hinged at the base of the upright A-pillar and open vertically at the touch of a button.

Bespoke taillights, which are three separate elements as found on the 1964 Mustang – but reinterpreted into a more dramatic arrow shape that links to the louver panels that replace the rear side windows.

The visible curl that sweeps into the crest of the concept’s carbon fiber fenders, hinting at tail fins that defined American cars of the ‘50s.

The sporting-but-elegant unique 20-inch rims, fitted with 275/40 tires on the front and larger 315/35 tires on the rear.

As its wheels and tires suggest, the Mustang by Giugiaro is more than just a tribute to Mustang design. It also is an exclamation of the car’s heritage of performance.

The concept features a powertrain and chassis enhanced in conjunction with Ford Racing – which is responsible for Ford Motor Company motorsports development and operations.

Ford Racing’s efforts include the development and sale of a race-prepared version of the Mustang, called the FR500C, for the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series. In its first season alone, the FR500C scored five wins in the 2005 GS Class, including the manufacturers’ championship, in which Mustang bested other production-based sports cars, including the BMW M3 and Porsche 911.

This Mustang, a turn-key race car sold to privateers, provided the inspiration for the Mustang by Giugiaro concept’s performance and handling attributes.

Ford Racing improved on the already-robust 300 horsepower all-aluminum 4.6-liter 3-valve V-8 engine in the production Mustang GT by adding an intercooled twin-screw supercharger for the new concept. Additional improvements include fuel injectors from the Ford GT and a unique engine calibration. Engine air intake is increased with a larger 95 mm mass air meter and a conical air filter. Exhaust performance is enhanced with new Ford Racing mufflers and an X-pipe.

The powertrain upgrades deliver an estimated 500 horsepower, complete with a boost level of 11 psi from the Ford Racing supercharger. A high-efficiency Ford Racing aluminum radiator provides increased cooling capability to accompany the extra 200 horsepower provided under hood.

Under the car, the FR500C-inspired chassis tuning is accomplished with a tailored Ford Racing Handling Pack. This package, available through Ford Racing for the Mustang GT, adds new Dynamic-tuned dampers, lowering springs and anti-sway bars. The changes give the car a lower stance while sharpening handling response. The car rides approximately 1.5 inches lower than the production Mustang GT.

“The Mustang by Giugiaro drives as good as it looks,” said Fabrizio Giugiaro. “After taking it to the limits on streets outside of Turin, I can honestly say this car was well worth the 30,000 hours of blood, sweat and tears that we invested to create a modern performance classic.”

Chrysler Sebring

Forget litres, cubic centimetres, gills or barrels. The de facto measurement of volume in the car world is... the golf bag.
Chrysler has announced that the convertible version of its new Sebring will hit the UK next summer with the proud boast that its D-segment drop-top passes the 'two golf bag test'.
Yes, it's true. Even with the roof down, you'll be able to fit two sets of woods, irons and putters in the boot of the Sebring convertible.

Chrysler SebringChrysler Sebring 2Chrysler Sebring 3 Is there some sort of conversion scale for this sort of measurement? Do two golf bags equate to 16 vanity cases? 24 bags of shopping?

Apart from its club-storing capabilities, the Sebring is a fairly conservative addition to the convertible market.

US customers will get the choice of a vinyl, cloth or steel roof, but us poor Brits will have to make do with the folding hard-top alone. Bah.

The Sebring doesn't break much new ground in the styling department, but it's definitely got an old-school American touch to it.

A couple of inches bigger in every direction than its fixed-roof cousin, it's not the most sporty-looking creature, but the dual chrome exhausts on the top-of-the-range 3.5-litre V6 engine lend it a more aggressive air.

In addition to that 235bhp V6, US buyers will also be able to request their Sebring with a 2.7-litre V6 developing 189bhp, or a more frugal 2.4-litre four-pot. It's still not much of a fuel-sipper though, returning well under 30mph on the combined cycle.

In the UK we'll have the choice of the smaller V6 or a 2.0-litre turbodiesel mated to a six-speed manual, which will develop 140bhp and 229lb ft of torque.

Although Chrysler boasts that the Sebring convertible is twice as stiff as its chop-top predecessor thanks to fatter sills, we're not holding out much hope of it being a finely fettled road racer. But we do like the sound of the in-car entertainment system, which includes a 20GB hard disk drive and integrated movie screen.

God bless those Americans and their television addiction.

There's no firm word on prices yet, but Chrysler reckons that the Sebring will weigh in cheaper than the Saab 9-3 and Audi A4 convertibles, which would put it in the £20,000 ballpark.

The Sebring convertible should reach the UK in the second half of next year, which gives you plenty of time to save up for a second set of golf clubs. In case you get a hole in one.

Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Roadster

As the Los Angeles Auto Show opens today, we know which stand we'll be rushing to first.
Lamborghini has chosen the West Coast extravaganza to unveil its Murcielago LP640 Roadster - and it's going to be difficult to miss.

Lamborghini Murcielago LP640Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 2Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 3Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 4 Essentially the chop-top version of Lambo's outrageous LP640 Coupe, the Roadster is as subtle as a bull in dark glasses... and every bit as intimidating.

The 640, of course, refers to the horsepower produced by the Roadster's 6.5-litre V12, while LP stands for 'longitudinale posteriore', which means the engine is mounted lengthways behind the cockpit.

All of which allows the Roadster to spin up to 8,000rpm and develop a meaty 486lb ft of torque - enough to propel it to 62mph in a mere 3.4 seconds and on to a top speed of almost 200mph.

Yes, that's a fraction slower than the coupe version. But without a roof to provide at least a little protection from the deafening growl of the V12, we're betting that the driving experience will be even more intense.

Removing the roof has required Lamborghini to make some serious structural adjustments to stop the LP640 from splitting in half as it hits warp speed.

A newly designed frame structure made of steel and carbon fibre keeps the Roadster rigid, with particular reinforcement given to the engine area. Lambo will even sculpt these reinforcements out of carbon fibre if you ask nicely.

Lamborghini also reluctantly offers a canvas roof, but warns that it is only for temporary use at speeds of under 100mph. Better drive fast enough to beat the rainstorms, then.

Devotees of the raging bull will notice a few other touches unique to the Roadster. The chop-top gets a new rear diffuser, with the exhaust system integrated within a tailpipe, as well as fresh windscreen wipers, a revised rear-light cluster and the option of new Hermera alloy wheels.

Otherwise the Roadster stays true to its Coupe roots. The monster 335/30 rear tyres remain, with Pirelli Corsa tyres an option for those who want to test out the Roadster on the track.

If you're brave or stupid enough to fancy charging the Murcielago on near-slicks, the LP640 Roadster arrives in the UK in spring 2007.

The price tag? Lambo is staying coy, but we reckon it'll cost you at least £200,000 to feel the wind in your hair and 640 horses behind your back.

Samba spirit: Lobini H1

Brazil is justly famous for many things: football, mardi gras and some unusual hair cuts.

Sports cars don't feature high on the country's list of famous exports, even if you include the curious Volkswagen Puma of the 1970s.

Lobini of Sao Paulo is out to change that. Its lightweight H1 sports car is about the size of a Lotus Elise and shares the Brit's lightweight philosophy.

Lobini H1Lobini H1 2

The simple chassis and fibreglass bodywork keep the weight down, while a 1.8-litre 20-valve turbocharged engine from VW and six-speed gearbox sit just behind the cockpit.

Lobini reckons its car will crack 0-62mph in six seconds and carry on to 150mph, and the firm also says the handling is up to Elise standards.

The H1 is on sale in the US with a price tag around $47,000 and there are plans to bring it to the UK at a cost of £31,995 from the beginning of 2007.

Ford To Show 350-MPG Explorer Ute

LOS ANGELES — Ford Motor Co. will unveil a fuel-cell Explorer this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show that it claims can travel more miles on a single hydrogen fill-up than any fuel-cell vehicle on the road.

ford explorer 350-MPG Explorer Ute fuel cellford explorer 350-MPG Explorer Ute fuel cell 2The Explorer has the hydrogen fuel tank mounted in the center of the vehicle so the tank can be larger and deliver more miles — 350 — on a single fill-up than other fuel-cell vehicles, Ford claims. In addition, the location of the tank allows for the six-passenger seating and same cargo capacity as on today's Explorer. It is also equipped with an advanced electric all-wheel-drive system.

In the past year, the Explorer has been driven 17,000 miles at Ford's Dearborn, Michigan, test facility. Ford says the fuel-cell Explorer also set a new record for the most miles traveled in a 24-hour period in a fuel-cell vehicle — 1,556.

The fuel-cell Explorer is the first of a series of prototype vehicles to be built for the U.S. Department of Energy to determine if hydrogen propulsion is feasible. The fuel-cell Explorer is one of several vehicles with green technology that Ford will have at the show. Others will be the new 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid, the PZEV emissions compliant Ford Fusion and Ford Focus and the 2008 Ford F-Series Super Duty with Ford Clean Diesel Technology.

Ford's Explorer won't be the only vehicle at the show that runs on hydrogen. BMW will show the Hydrogen 7, a hydrogen-powered version of the 7 Series.

End of an Nisssan Alm-era

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, and good riddance to the Nissan Almera.
After six years of skirting the Valley of Death, Nissan's Grim Reapers have finally done the decent thing and killed off the Almera.

nissan almeraNot a moment too soon either for this bland hatch that, yea, lived in the shadow of the Ford Focus.

Amazingly, Nissan managed to churn out 639,000 Almeras from its Sunderland plant, so at least it kept British workers going.

But now the scythe of time has taken the Almera's head, and gone too is the Primera, which dies a whimpering death in the UK even though Nissan's Sunderland factory still makes them for foreign markets.

Still, new life is being breathed into Nissan's northeast factory with production of the Note and Qashqai.

Spy Pics Show BMW X6 in Development

MUNICH, Germany — BMW appears to be working on a spin-off of its new X5 that could be called the X6.

BMW X6 spy picsBMW X6 spy pics 2BMW X6 spy pics 3 Spy photographers snapped the accompanying images of a crossover vehicle that seems to ape the looks and style of the Range Rover Sport and the Mercedes CLS coupe rather than the more traditional boxy styling of SUVs.

Despite the camouflage, spy photographers saw a sloped roof, a steeply raked windshield and a slim, sleek-looking profile. From the look of it, they say, it's not the V5 that BMW is rumored to be working on; that model is expected to be more of a Mercedes R-Class type that places more of a premium on space efficiency than sportiness.

Even though it was out being tested, sources say not to expect a BMW X6 in the local dealership for two years at this point.

2007 AC Schnitzer BMW Z4 M Coupe

(from AC Schnitzer Press Release) For both the BMW M Roadster and M Coupe, an aerodynamic package has been created which sets even more sporting accents through its styling language and the use of carbon.
The package consists of carbon front spoiler elements that optionally can be joined to the front spoiler with chromed aluminium supports. In addition, the new AC Schnitzer chrome front grille gives the vehicles a trendy retro look and at the same time meets the high air flow demand of the 3.2 litre high revving engine.

This diffuser is available with two different versions of the special rear skirt edge frame which, depending on which exhaust is fitted, give the "Finishing Touch" to the chromed tailpipes of the Sports Trim or Racing Design and the standard system.
For the coupe versions, a three-piece rear wing is available.

2007 AC Schnitzer BMW Z4 M Roadster

(from AC Schnitzer Press Release) Now that the BMW Z4 Roadster has undergone a facelift and at the same time the M-variant, the Z4 M Roadster, was launched, the model range has been completed with a new Z4 Coupe and MCoupe. Not only BMW but also we at AC Schnitzer are thrilled with the range of new Z4 vehicles, and present our interpretations: the AC Schnitzer ACS4 Roadster and the AC Schnitzer ACS4 Coupe.

2007 AC Schnitzer BMW Z4 M Roadster2007 AC Schnitzer BMW Z4 M Roadster 22007 AC Schnitzer BMW Z4 M Roadster 32007 AC Schnitzer BMW Z4 M Roadster 42007 AC Schnitzer BMW Z4 M Roadster 5The product range extends from suspension components and exhaust systems, through a wide range of wheel and tyre combinations, to special aerodynamic conversions and last but not least interior accessories.

The aerodynamic range has been designed so that - with few exceptions - the special accessories for the ACS4 Roadster will also fit the ACS4 Coupe, and similarly the conversions for the ACS4 M Roadster are compatible with the ACS4 M Coupe.

To improve the driving dynamics, for the Z4 M Roadster and M Coupe we offer a modified rear axle ratio of3.91 : 1 (standard 3.62 : 1). The AC Schnitzer rear axle ratio guarantees greatly improved acceleration.

The response behaviour is improved on all Z4 models thanks to the AC Schnitzer sports rear silencers. Made completely of special steel with chromed Racing tailpipe, they also provide a more sonorous note than the standard system. For purely visual enhancement, on the Z4 Roadster and Coupй chromed tailpipe trims are available in the same design.

For the M-versions of the Z4 that are fitted with a twin sports silencer as standard, as well as the Twin Racing system there is a further option of Sports Trim Design. This design is reserved exclusively for M-vehicles and was previously seen on both the M5 and M6.

Faster and more precise gear shifts promote the adrenalin rush and perceptibly improve acceleration in a car. So the AC Schnitzer Short Shift has been adapted for the BMW Z4 3.0i, 3.0si and M-versions with manual transmission.

For safe control at all times of the driving performance of the new BMW Z4 models, except M variants, a special high performance brake system has been developed for the front. The internally vented and slotted brake discs measure 334 mm in diameter and are 32 mm thick. The special brake calipers are fitted with two 42 mm pistons. Naturally the standard ABS system is retained in full.

Extensive tests on race tracks and public roads have resulted in the development of a complete suspension concept consisting of AC Schnitzer sports suspension, special antiroll bar kit and strut braces. The total concept, the components of which can also be fitted individually, achieves sports handling with the same high standard of driving comfort.

In addition, exclusive to the M Roadster and M Coupe is a special racing suspension which is currently still in the development phase.

The suspension concept for all ACS4 Roadster and Coupe models naturally also includes the AC Schnitzer Type IV, Type III and Type II alloy and racing rims in one-piece and multipiece construction. As well as a wealth of wheel and tyre combinations in 17", 18" and 19", we can now offer the largest wheels for the Z4 Roadster and Coupй in 9.0J x 20" with tyres 245/30 R 20. The M Roadster and M Coupй are even fitted with 9.0J x 20" and 245/30 R 20 on the front and 10.0J x 20" with 285/25 R 20 on the rear. For tyres, we recommend high performance tyres from Continental and Michelin.

The bodywork of the AC Schnitzer ACS4 models reveals the high technical standards that we apply to our products. So for the Z4 Roadster and Coupй and for the M Roadster and M Coupй there are two tailored outfits that fulfil these attributes.

The front part of the Z4 Roadster and Coupe is enhanced by the strikingly designed front spoiler attached to the standard front skirt. This also ensures better downforce. The rear is rounded off by the new AC Schnitzer rear skirt which not only harmoniously integrates the sports rear silencer into the rear but at the same time gives the vehicle a more imposing appearance.

It is in the nature of things that there are a few fundamental differences between the Roadster and Coupe: for the Roadster the product range includes a chrome cover for the roll bars, a wind deflector in clear-glass style and a two-piece rear wing, the triangular parts of which are attached individually to the right and left of the Roadster boot - setting totally new accents.

Whatever the body version, the AC Schnitzer side skirts form the homogeneous link between the front and rear. A particular eyecatcher is the side deflectors with integrated flashers, which as an option can be supplemented with a Chromeline set.

Exclusivity is the trump card in the cockpits of all AC Schnitzer ACS4 models: As well as the carbon interior trim in silver, and matching ergonomically designed AC Schnitzer airbag sports steering wheels, the accents are set above all by the aluminium accessories in silver or black anodized finish. There is also a pedal set with matching foot rest, a handbrake handle and a selector knob for the manual versions. For automatics, there is a carbon selector lever. Last but not least, foot mats with the AC Schnitzer logo, made from high quality velours, complete the range.

2007 Hamann BMW 5-Series

(from Hamann Press Release) Diesel Hit from HAMANN: 535d with up to 350 horsepower under the hood

- Aerodynamic elements for vehicles with M aerodynamics package
- Diesel tuning up to 350 HP; 660 Nm torque
- Different wheel designs, 20-inch and lowering kit
- Interior finishing with sport steering wheel, aluminum parts and carbon

2007 Hamann BMW 5-Series2007 Hamann BMW 5-Series 22007 Hamann BMW 5-Series 32007 Hamann BMW 5-Series 4 HAMANN, the car refiner from Laupheim, is now expanding its product range for the BMW 5-Series E60/61 with attachments for vehicles with the M aerodynamics package. Besides the aerodynamics components, HAMANN also offers other conversion measures. Diesel drivers can expect major performance increases. Up to 350 HP is possible!

Up to 276 km/h - in a diesel!

BMW's range of engines leaves no wishes unfulfilled. Or do they? In any case, customers can choose from four different types of engines. Whether it is the 520d, 525d, 530d, or 535d - the Bavarian manufacturer offers the right unit to meet the needs. However, needs can grow! So a visit to HAMANN is recommended to anyone wanting more performance. The company from Laupheim can help put an edge to all versions by reprogramming the series engine management. HAMANN extracts performance values from the top diesel model, the 535d, which were considered impossible until now. In the first phase, the tuner increases power to 319 HP/235 kW. The maximum torque of 630 Nm makes it possible to get impressive in-gear performance figures. The limousine can make the sprint from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds instead of the standard 6.5 seconds (add 0.1 s for the estate model). The top speed - HAMANN removes the Vmax governor - increases to 267 km/h. In a second phase (sports version), the 3-litre straight-six engine with a register turbocharger achieves an unbelievable 350 HP/257 kW and applies a titanic 660 Nm to the crankshaft. The acceleration values then improve once again by one-tenth of a second. The resulting 276 km/h is enough to drive one or two sports car drivers to despair. Don't forget, we're talking about a diesel!

Besides diesel tuning, HAMANN of course also offers tuning for gas engines.

Anyone who orders an E60/E61 with the M aerodynamics package (part of the M sports package from the BMW range of products) will find the matching additional aerodynamics components at HAMANN. The front is given especially impressive lines through the competition front spoiler, which reduces the lift. It fits into the M lines perfectly. The classical BMW markings, the double-kidneys, can be masked with a HAMANN kidney cover, which discretely highlights the sportier look.

A pair of HAMANN side skirts provides optical lowering on one hand, and furthermore, they ensure a more impressive side view that what is provided by the smooth side profile. As an optical counterweight to the front spoiler, there is a HAMANN spoiler for the rear (not for the estate) where it is responsible for reducing lift. If you order a HAMANN 4-pipe, muffler rear section, you should also order a rear styling conversion kit with an integrated diffuser at the same time to have the right look. The 5 series is given the final touch by the HAMANN sports mirror (for left-hand-drive up to year of construction 08/2005), which is electrically controlled and heated, or also hinged as an option.

Large wheels and lowering kit

20-inch wheels fit perfectly with the modified 5-Series. HAMANN offers the "Edition Race" design as the top model. The look of the three-section, ultra-light, forged rims with the cross-spoke design and a black rim star is characterized by the 9 main spokes, which each branch outwards into 2 others. Besides the exciting design, the titanium screw joints stand out in particular. The icing on the cake of the exquisite look is the mirror-finished rim flange. Besides the "Edition Race" wheel, HAMANN offers other of its own creations in the form of the wheel models "PG3" and "Anniversary I". Typical wheel/tire combinations:
9 J x 20 (front), 10.5 J x 20 (rear) / 245/30ZR 20, 285/25 ZR 20
9 J x 20 (front), 10.5 J x 20 (rear) / 255/30ZR 20, 295/25 ZR 20

There is a lowering kit to lower the body with progressive body springs. With this, the HAMANN 5-Series hovers above the pavement 40 mm lower at the front and 20 mm lower at the rear. Alternatively, HAMANN offers a sports coilover suspension. On request, a sports braking system for the front axle provides better deceleration values.

The Laupheim finishing specialists offer various interior accessories for the BMW 5-Series. For example, the customer can put in an interior set made of carbon for the instrument panel and the centre console in order to give the cockpit a breath of racing air. To turn this breath into a stiff breeze, there are also different aluminum elements. For example, HAMANN offers a footrest made of this light-weight metal, and a handbrake lever, as well as all the pedals. An exclusive set of foot mats with the HAMANN inscription in silver is also part of the range of interior products. For a complete transformation, there is a three-spoke HAMANN airbag sports steering wheel. Of course, HAMANN will change any 5-Series on the basis of the customer's individual requests. For example, exquisite leather finishing is also possible in various colors. Or, for example, there are extensive multimedia conversions with DVD, TV, or Playstation.

VW Touareg dragged a 155-tonne Boeing 747

Frankly, the only time you'll catch us pulling a big bird is in the wee small hours in a seedy nightclub, but Volkswagen has been making more of a song and dance of the pulling power of its Touareg.
In a flagrant but impressive publicity stunt, a Touareg V10 TDi dragged a 155-tonne Boeing 747-200 jumbo jet along the same runway that the Stig normally uses to demonstrate his unearthly skills.

Touareg vs Boeing 747 2Touareg vs Boeing 747Touareg vs Boeing 747 3 It's a neat trick and one we're kicking ourselves for not thinking of first, but VW did cheat just a smidgen by adding 4.3 tonnes of metal weights to the car to give it a bit more traction.

The firm changed the axle ratio to give the turbodiesel V10-engined SUV more of a chance to overcome the static friction caused by the plane's tyres compressing under its enormous weight.

VW also swapped some body panels on the Touareg to dress it up like the 2007 facelfifted model, but the engine, gearbox and tyres were all standard.

As for the aircraft, 20 tonnes of fuel were replaced with water, and the four jet engines were replaced with dummies for safety.

Driver Uwe Krieghoff reported that the car had no trouble hauling the jet and said: "I was a bit disappointed we couldn't find something heavier to tow as it was too easy. If anyone could lend us a heavier aircraft then please let us know."

So if the cargo plane in your garage is just gathering dust, you know who to call.

Seat gets into a flap

They're getting all happy-flappy over at Seat now they've wrapped up the British Touring Car Championship manufacturer's prize.
To celebrate, the Spaniards have added the DSG gearbox as an option for the Leon and Altea T FSI FR models.

seat altea fr That's a lot of letters, so let's break 'em down.

The DSG is a dual-shift gearbox that uses two clutches instead of one to make super-quick changes at the touch of a steering column-mounted paddle. Better known as a 'flappy-paddle thingy' or a Huddersfield.

Of course, the T means the turbo, which is attached to the 197bhp 2.0-litre engine, while FSI refers to the engine's fuel injection.

Still with us? Right, FR stands for Formula Racing, which is Seat's way of saying it's a warmed-up version in the range.

The bottom line is both the Leon and Altea DSG models are 0.1 seconds quicker from 0-62mph but have identical top speeds to their manual gearbox counterparts.

The Leon will relieve you of £17,895 and the Altea £18,195, which means the DSG 'box adds £900 to the price of a standard model.

New Mercedes CLK

'More power' is music to our ears, although this announcement from Mercedes is more like a pleasing ditty than a full-blown West End production.

New Mercedes CLKAnyway, the chaps at Mercedes are singing from our song sheet and have fitted a more powerful engine in the CLK200 Kompressor Coupe and Cabriolet models.

It's up 21bhp on the old motor's gargling 163bhp to a sweeter-sounding 184bhp, while torque gains a deeper voice with 184lb ft.

That all adds up to 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds, instead of the old version's 9.3, and a top speed that now reaches 147mph.

If this sounds like it's for you, you'll need to find cash to the tune of £29,910 for the Coupe and £33,510 for the Cabriolet.

Chrysler Nassau and Jeep Trailhawk Sketches Revealed

DETROIT — Chrysler pulled the wraps off styling sketches of two concept vehicles that will make their debut in early January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The Chrysler Nassau is a four-passenger, four-door "coupe" with luxury aspirations. The car borrows heavily from the current Chrysler-brand styling oeuvre. The company is hedging all over the place in terms of production plans, saying that the design "leans toward an exploration as to what could be a future sedan in the brand's lineup."

chrysler nassau
The Jeep Trailhawk appears to pick up where the Jeep Compass left off in terms of exterior design cues, although Chrysler said the concept is built on the updated body-on-frame architecture of the 2007 Wrangler. In fact, look for elements of the same basic styling theme to appear next year in the redesigned 2008 Liberty.

A go-kart for grown-ups

Dennis Palatov is our kind of guy !
Not content with dreaming of owning and driving supercars, Dennis got off his butt and has designed, built and tested his very own go-kart for proper adults. He's even intending to sell the car with a one-year warranty.

dp1 kartdp1 kart 2But the DP1, as he calls his self-designed machine, is no normal trackday special. For starters, the engine sits alongside the driver, with one balancing out the other either side of the carbon fibre bodywork.

Then there's the racing gearbox sourced from Hewland, which supplies many of the world's top racing teams.

The engine for the DP1 is also another unusual piece of design. It's two Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle engines spliced together to form a compact and potent 2.4-litre V8.

No hard and fast performance figures, but the diminutive DP1 has been charging around race circuits in and around Oregon in the US.

Japan Beat: 12th-Generation Nissan Skyline

TOKYO — Nissan has launched its new Skyline sedan in Japan, the 12th generation of the Japan-market equivalent of the Infiniti G35.

new Nissan Skylinenew Nissan Skyline 2 A company official, acknowledging that minicars are riding the crest of popularity right now in Japan, said he hopes "a new wave [of sales] comes" for sedans with the new model.

Nissan's chief operating officer was quoted by the Japan Times newspaper this week.

The Skyline gets two new Nissan V6 engines, a 3.5-liter that makes 315 horsepower and a 2.5-liter that makes 225 hp, each mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with adaptive shift control. Sporty SP and P models have steering-column-mounted magnesium shift paddles that let the driver select a manual-shift mode. The SP and P models of the Skyline also have, as an option, "the world's first four-wheel active steering system," Nissan says.

The new Skyline is lower to the ground, slightly wider and has a sleek design described as "dynamic motion" by the company. There's a new grille and headlamp design, as well as L-shaped taillights. Sport models of the new Skyline have their own front bumper and body-side sill spoiler.

Inside, there's aluminum trim with a finish that, in true Nissan/Infiniti style, was "inspired by the texture of traditional Japanese rice paper called Washi," and optional exotic-wood trim. Seats have been lowered by a little more than an inch for a sportier feeling for the driver.

2008 Chevrolet Malibu Interior Goes Two-Tone

DETROIT — Chevrolet has announced that the redesigned 2008 Malibu sedan will be unveiled in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

2008 Chevrolet Malibu Interior This teaser interior shot released by the company showed an updated version of the GM brand's classic dual-cockpit design.

Chevy said the photo showed one of the car's available two-tone interiors.

"The 2008 Chevy Malibu will offer a number of striking and progressive interiors that use premium materials to demonstrate quality and value not seen before in this segment," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager.

For '08, the front-wheel-drive Malibu will get a 6-inch-longer wheelbase than the current model and is expected to be equipped with either four- or six-cylinder engines. Styling is expected to be a bit bolder, with more angular cues patterned after those on the Chevrolet Tahoe.

"GM needs to have a strong presence in midsize cars once again," GM North America President Troy Clarke told Detroit's Automotive Press Association in a speech. "And this is the type of design that will lead us to be known as a great carmaker...not only as a great truck manufacturer that also happens to make cars.... That's another key to improving our net sales."

The new Malibu is expected to hit showrooms in mid-2007.

TVR fans take on London

More than 300 TVR owners will drive their cars in a parade around London this week in protest at the mass sacking of the firm's British workers.

TVR The parade, which starts at the Ace Cafe on the North Circular at 1pm on Sunday, will take in Marble Arch, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square and Hyde Park Corner. The event is also expected to set a Guinness World Record for the largest parade of single marque cars.

Earlier this month, TVR laid off 158 workers from its Blackpool factory, just two months after confirming it would stay in the area permanently. The company's treatment of its workers has gained widespread condemnation.

"TVR is the last major manufacturer of true, race-bred sports cars left in Great Britain," says Dave Chant, organiser of the parade. "The skills and craftsmanship of the people who build these machines will be lost for ever if production is moved abroad."

To register your support for the TVR workers, visit the TVR enthusiasts' online petition.

Toyota Corolla Redux

BEIJING — Media wags at the motor show here were openly referring to the redesigned Toyota Corolla as the "mini Camry."

new Toyota Corolla 2008One insider maintained the new compact had actually been toned down a bit from the original concept because it looked too darn much like its big brother.

Regardless, the new Corolla made its world debut not in Tokyo, Detroit or Los Angeles, but at China's premier auto event. The car will be produced next year at Toyota's joint venture with FAW; it won't hit the States until early 2008, according to U.S. suppliers familiar with the automaker's production plans.

The Corolla that was displayed at the Beijing show differed markedly from the European Corolla replacement, dubbed the Auris, that was shown in Paris two months ago. The latter model, in fact, is quite distinctive, but apparently is earmarked exclusively for European markets.

In China, the new Corolla will get a twin-cam 1.8-liter four-cylinder rated at 134 horsepower and 129 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

Toyota is looking to the Corolla, the Camry and a raft of other vehicles it produces in partnership with FAW and Guangzhou Auto to help boost its sales in China to 400,000 units next year and 1 million by 2010.

Brabus Rocket Blasts CLS to 730 HP

BOTTROP, Germany — We see the term "world's fastest" bandied about with increasing frequency. But when the press release comes from Mercedes tuning specialist Brabus, we tend to sit up and read a little more closely.

Brabus Rocket Blasts CLS 730 HPBrabus most recently is claiming the title of "world's fastest street-legal sedan" for its Rocket, based on the Mercedes CLS. Earlier this year, the Brabus team set the mark at 362.4 km/h (225.2 mph), then eclipsed their own record in mid-October at the Nardò high-speed test track in Southern Italy, nudging the bar to 365.7 km/h (227.2 mph).

To refresh your memory, the Rocket boasts a twin-turbocharged Brabus SV12 6.3-liter engine under the hood, refitted with new cams, crank and forged pistons, as well as a high-performance stainless-steel exhaust system with low-back-pressure metal catalytic converters.

The SV12 churns out 730 horsepower, while torque is electronically limited to 811 pound-feet.

If you choose to buy the street-legal Rocket, Brabus has also governed the top speed to a mere 350 km/h (217.5 mph), although owners can take some comfort in knowing that zero to 60 mph is achieved in less than 4.0 seconds.
For more information, see the Brabus Web site.

Mazda3 MPS

Those nice chaps at Mazda have gone and duped us. Just when they led us to believe the Mazda3 MPS was going to cost around £19,500, they go and announce it will be £18,995.

Mazda3 MPS Mazda3 MPS 2 Makes us look a bit daft, but it's good news for those who fancy a 256bhp hot hatch capable of 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds and 155mph, making the MPS one of the swiftest cars in its class.

The MPS will also be one of the best equipped because it will come in one trim only that includes half-leather seats, climate control, 18in alloy wheels and metallic paint.

You can also order the £500 Sports Styling Pack that adds lowered suspension, a larger rear spoiler and two-spoke door mirrors.

We had a good drive in the MPS last week, and you can read what we thought of Mazda's rival to the Focus ST, Golf GTi and Astra VXR in our road test.

Only 1,000 models are destined for the UK in 2007 and sales start in February. Well, that's what Mazda has led us to believe.

Porsche Teases '08 Cayenne

ZUFFENHAUSEN, Germany — Amid all the hoopla surrounding Porsche's purported takeover of Volkswagen, the sports-car maker has quietly sent out a teaser photo of its face-lifted 2008 Cayenne, due to hit the streets next spring.

Porsche 08 Cayenne Cayenne sales have cooled considerably in the past year, so the company elected to pull the launch of the '08 model ahead in an attempt to rekindle the ardor of performance SUV buyers — if, in fact, there are many left out there.

Good thing, since a full ground-up overhaul isn't slated before 2010 at the earliest.

Chery Hints at Future Model Plans in Istanbul and Beijing

ISTANBUL, Turkey — China's Chery has made a splash this past week with a slate of show cars at the Auto China show in Beijing. But wait, there's more from the ambitious automaker, notably the S12 Kimo and the A3 concept shown at Istanbul's Motor Show in Turkey.

chery kimo
Earlier this month, at the Istanbul show, Chery held a secret world premiere. To celebrate its entry to the Turkish market, the company presented the S16 WOW, which was first shown at the 2005 Shanghai Motor Show — but also a smaller hatch, called the S12 Kimo. The S12, powered by a 1.3-liter engine, was also shown at Beijing, but under the name A1.

chery a1 It was designed in Italy, reportedly by Pininfarina.

Another newcomer that was one of the highlights of the Chery stand is the A3 concept.

chery a3
It is again reportedly designed by Pininfarina. The rather cryptic press release hinted that it may be introduced next year with 1.3-, 1.6- and 2.0-liter engines — all of them belonging to Chery's ACTECO. Features mentioned include four airbags (two front, two curtain), ABS, ESP, satellite navigation, DVD player and electric windows.

Last but not least, a strangely named light commercial van was also shown. Called the Karry, it bears some similarity to the Volkswagen Caddy.

Rear license plate illuminated by a special luminescent film

The Vision SLR was presented at the Detroit Auto Show in 1999 as "Tomorrow's Silver Arrow". This claim was reflected in every aspect of the concept vehicle. Designed as a Gran Turismo for the 21st century, it incorporated styling themes from the current Silver Arrow Formula One racecars and from the SLR sports cars of the 1950's, weaving them together into a new and fascinating design.

The body of the Vision SLR expressed dynamism and power. The striking front section with the V-shaped nose and the distinctive twin-airfoil design – a motif which was repeated at various points around the body and in the interior and was inspired by the Formula One racecars – harmonized with the four-headlamp design familiar from other models. The long and extended hood, the powerfully sculpted fenders and the gullwing doors of the Vision SLR were based on styling ideas first seen in the legendary SL models of the fifties and their SLR racing versions, in which Juan Manuel Fangio, Karl Kling and Stirling Moss romped from victory to victory. Expressive but by no means aggressive, the Vision SLR displayed a muscular body whose every fiber was taut and honed, poised to go into action at a moment's notice.

A dominant interior design feature was the wide, gently curving center console, with its circular controls, and the silver-painted "spoiler fins" facing the driver and front passenger. These features replaced a conventional instrument panel and at the same time symbolized the state-of-the-art lightweight construction of the Gran Turismo. The cockpit featured two round, aluminum-rimmed instrument dials which recalled high-quality chronometers. These two dials – the speedometer and rev counter – featured a new technique which allowed them to accommodate other displays in their center. Traditional instrument needles had been replaced by indicators which moved on transparent plastic discs, so giving an unimpeded view of the displays. Carbon bucket seats, an oval steering wheel and state-of-the-art information technology such as the Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND) were further notable features of the sporty interior.

The Vision SLR's chassis was made of a combination of fiber composites and aluminum which offered outstanding crash performance and also brought weight savings of approximately 40 percent compared with conventional steel designs. These materials were used in those areas where they brought the biggest advantages. The front crumple zones, which deformed to a predetermined pattern, were made of aluminum, while for the passenger compartment fiber composites were used. The extreme strength of these fiber composite components maximized occupant survival space even in a very severe frontal or rear-end collision.

For the first time in a Mercedes-Benz, an electrohydraulic brake system was used. This system used sensors and microcontrollers to precisely calculate the right braking pressure in a given situation, thus providing significantly enhanced safety when cornering or when driving on a slippery surface. Under the name Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC), the system first went into production in the SL (R 230), premiered in 2001. The brake discs were made of fiber-reinforced ceramic and were capable of withstanding extreme stresses.

The front headlamps with adaptive lighting system and innovative high-performance diodes automatically followed the direction in which the driver was steering, thereby adapting to different driving situations. The result was significantly improved road illumination when cornering or making a turn. The xenon projector-beam headlamps provided both the low beam and the high beam, and the Mercedes engineers therefore referred to them as "bi-functional". This technology is based on shutters which, as well as ensuring precise compliance with the legal requirements on dipped beam range, automatically move out of the way when the high beam is switched on, thus allowing the full light output to be used. The high beam is supplemented by two long-distance spotlights.

The LED rear lights were particularly effective at warning when the vehicle was braking or making a turn. They were mounted on two "floating" fins positioned one above the other which showed a close tie-in with the overall styling themes. A further light strip extended right the way across the vehicle above the rear bumper and housed the reversing light and the rear fog lamp, both of which were based on space-saving, high-performance neon technology. The rear license plate meanwhile was illuminated by means of a special luminescent film.

The Mercedes-Benz high-performance sports car concept was powered by a modified version of the high-torque naturally aspirated V8 engine used in the S-Class. Equipped with supercharging and an air-to-water intercooler, the 5.5 liter V8 developed maximum power of 410 kW (557 hp) in the Vision SLR, making it one of the most powerful engines in this displacement category. Maximum torque of 720 Newton meters came on stream at 4000 rpm, with 580 Newton meters already available at just 2000 rpm. The transmission was a five-speed automatic with Touchshift control. Performance was formidable, with a 0 - 100 km/h time of just 4.2 seconds and a 0 - 200 km/h time of 11.3 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 320 km/h.

Later in 1999, at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), Mercedes-Benz presented the roadster version of the Vision SLR. In terms of styling and engineering it closely resembled the all-enclosed version, although some new themes were also aired, such as a soft top made of an innovative translucent material.

Ever since it was first unveiled in 1999, Vision SLR has represented Mercedes-Benz's idea of an exclusive sports car. There will be little change on that score even after the start of "volume" production in 2004, since only 3,500 units are planned. Prior to the start of production various refinements were made to the bodywork and also to the engine, which now develops maximum power of 460 kW (626 hp) at 6500 rpm, with maximum torque of 780 Nm available between 3250 and 5000 rpm. As these figures indicate, the SLR is every inch a high-performance sports car. But with all the refinement of a Mercedes-Benz.

Beijing Wrap: China Shows Its Take on Performance

BEIJING — Chinese automakers are no longer solely relying on foreign partners for inspiration and technology as they develop increasingly more sophisticated performance and sport models for production.
Of course, some Chinese firms don't have foreign partners — and some Chinese designs aren't so sophisticated. But a clear step in that direction emerged at the latest Beijing auto show.

Dongfeng Motor (DFM, formerly Second Auto Works) has five different foreign affiliates but is only now beginning to develop some passenger cars under its own auspices. Its initial effort is a near clone of the previous-generation Hyundai Tiburon, painted a striking yellow and bearing the rather unglamorous designation EQ7240BP.

donfeng sportscar The DFM coupe is powered by an SOHC 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 134 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. DFM claims a top speed of 118 mph.

Perhaps its most distinguishing characteristic lies under the rear hatch: a strange bellows-like device that inflates when the hatch is lifted. Its technical purpose is not clear, but its aesthetic appeal is minimal. No production plans have been specified.

BYD, the neophyte automaker and offspring of the giant cell-phone-battery maker of the same name, turned out a retractable-hardtop model dubbed the F8 with a face that is a shameless rip-off of Mercedes-Benz.

byd f8 The two-plus-two coupe/convertible features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 130 hp and 128 lb-ft of torque. Manual and automatic transmission versions are to be produced. BYD projects a top speed of 112 mph and 0-60-mph acceleration in less than 14 seconds.
BYD wants to begin selling the F8 next year, with prices starting at around $25,000.

Not to get BMW enthusiasts too excited, but the new M3 made its debut at the Beijing show — that is, the new Zhonghua M3 from Brilliance Auto, which just happens to be partnered with the German automaker in China but also builds cars under its own brand.

zhonghua m31 In fact, the production version of the M3 is likely to carry a Chinese name, much like its earlier counterparts, the M1 and M2 sedans, did when they reached production. The M3 reportedly boasts a 1.8-liter turbo under the hood and is said to have a top speed of 137 mph.
Brilliance hopes to put the M3 into dealerships by 2008. No price has been mentioned.

Chery wowed show-goers in Shanghai last year with its Pininfarina-designed coupe/convertible, the M14. This year in Beijing, the automaker followed up with a sleek coupe from Torino Design, the Fulwin II. Rumored for production in 2008-'09 in both hardtop and convertible variants, the Fulwin II has a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 107 hp and 106 lb-ft of torque.

chery fulwin iiOne of the more appealing sports concepts at the show was the S1, a coupe crafted by the Shanghai office of FAW Haima, a joint venture between one of China's largest automakers and Mazda. FAW would not own up to using Mazda mechanicals under the skin, but the car looks virtually production-ready.

"Arousing curiosity … firing the emotions … thinking ahead … anticipating the future and translating new ideas into reality – the designers at the Mercedes Technology Center in Sindelfingen certainly have an interesting job. Their 'present' is the future. And sometimes they give us glimpses of that future by bringing out concept cars – cars which show us how we will be getting around in a number of years' time. The new Vision SLA is one such glimpse."

This was how Mercedes introduced the Vision SLA when it made its public debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2000. A small roadster based on the A-Class, the Vision SLA's aim was to translate the appeal and driving enjoyment of the SL series into an altogether smaller segment.

Reflecting its A-Class parentage Vision SLA had compact dimensions, with an exterior length of 3.77 meters promising a nippy driving experience – the SLK (R 170) was 20 centimeters longer, the SL (R 230) no less than 73 centimeters longer. Key design features of the compact roadster concept included powerfully sculpted fenders, a sharply raked windshield, large doors and a gently slanting rear in the style of the legendary Mercedes Silver Arrows. Two particularly innovative features were a prominent front fin and a V-shaped nose borrowed from the SLR high-performance sports car, which incorporated a centrally positioned Mercedes star.

The bodywork sheltered advanced Mercedes engineering. A 1.9 liter engine developing maximum power of 92 kW (125 hp) and maximum torque of 180 Newton meters at 4000 rpm provided lively performance, with a 0 - 100 km/h sprint time of 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 209 km/h. High active safety standards meanwhile were provided by the A-Class-derived, slightly modified chassis with Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Brake Assist.

With the bodywork, the staff from the advanced engineering and research departments had broken new ground. The Vision SLA had an innovative hybrid body structure consisting of aluminum sections and panels and high-grade plastics. This lightweight construction allowed Vision SLA to tip the scales at just 950 kilograms (DIN unladen weight).

The A-Class influence could be seen in the safety concept too. Although the open-top two-seater wasn't built on the sandwich principle, in the event of a serious front-end impact it used the same bright idea as the A-Class of shunting the engine out of the way underneath the passenger compartment. The positioning of the engine at an angle ensured that in an impact it would slide down along the sturdy front floor panel without intruding into the passenger compartment. This gave Vision SLA the same high safety standards as larger Mercedes sedans. Roll-over protection was provided by sturdy roll-over bars behind the seats and by a reinforced front windshield frame.

Once again, lighting was an important development focus. At the rear, 30 high-performance LEDs, with prisms to disperse the light, provided a more effective rear warning system than conventional bulbs, particularly in conditions of poor visibility. It took the form of vertical bands. The powerful LED turn signals, housed on fins inside the light housings, were likewise innovative and designed to attract attention. High-performance LEDs were also used for the brake lights, which were mounted in the rear bumper and in the rear crossbar on the trunk lid. Evenly dispersed road illumination and a long beam range were provided by state-of-the-art xenon projector-beam headlamps which used two separate headlamps for the dipped beam and the high beam.

At the front, the transparent ends of a frontal fin spanning the full width of the car incorporated yellow high-performance LED turn signals, which were supplemented by repeater LEDs in the exterior mirror casings.

Inside, the accent was on lightweight design. The technical aspects were woven neatly together with styling features suggesting lightness and transparency, such as perforated sheet metal, aluminum rotary controls and aluminum instrument cylinders. Carbon fiber bucket seats, adopted in slightly modified form from the Vision SLR, continued the theme – they were approximately 25 percent lighter than similarly specified conventional car seats.

The cockpit recalled sports cars and tourers of earlier years. The chronometer-style instruments normally supplied data only on speed, rpm, oil pressure and fuel level. However, other displays appeared behind the dials when needed, in the event of a malfunction.

In all respects Vision SLA put the accent on a natural and unfiltered motoring experience. This was at the heart of this roadster's charm and was reflected in the interior design. Carpeting and fabric upholstery had been dispensed with in favor of painted metal surfaces and dark brown, specially supplied saddle-quality leather. This leather was tanned using only vegetable matter, thus helping to preserve its very special character. A natural material with a strong air of quality, hard-wearing and also very breathable, it was used on the dashboard, on the insides of the doors and in areas exposed to frequent occupant contact, such as the steering wheel, the seat surfaces, the armrests in the doors and the floor. The cut edges were deliberately left visible, with light-colored stitching providing a color contrast and hand-finished effect.

With Vision SLA, a compact Mercedes-Benz roadster made its debut. The concept has been developed and refined to the point where it would be ready to go into production at a moment's notice. Who knows? Before long we might even see it in the showrooms.

The 214mph Audi A4

Why does everyone want to turn the poor Audi A4 supersonic?
Audi already offers the slightly unhinged S iteration, boasting a 4.2-litre V8 that puts out 339bhp and propels the A4 to 60mph in just under six seconds.

Audi A4 214mph 3Audi A4 214mph 2Audi A4 214mph And if you need to go even quicker, there's always the frankly deranged RS4, which develops a massive 414bhp from the same engine and hits 60 in under five seconds.

More? You want more? You'll have to go to Germany then. Audi tuning specialist Alfons Hohenester has rustled up this: the Hohenester HS650 Nardo.

OK, so the name makes it sound like an electro-pop synthesiser, but there's nothing cheesy about the performance.

This modified A4 is fitted with a three-litre twin-turbo V6, which will see it to 62mph in 3.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 214mph. It'll also develop 650bhp when it's spinning at 7,200rpm.

The A4 has race-tuned suspension and modified aerodynamics to keep it on the road at such silly speeds, but we like the fact that - if you took the gaudy stickers off at least - it looks more or less stock.

Rock up to the lights in it and you'd barely get a second glance. At least not until you hit a speed bump and landed in France...

Beijing Preview: Geely's $12,000 U.S. Vision

BEIJING — Geely, one of the fastest-growing Chinese carmakers, will introduce the new Vision at the Beijing Motor Show that opens its doors this weekend.

geely visiongeely vision 2geely vision 3 Geely made its first car in 2000, a very low-quality family hatchback powered by a Toyota engine. Although the company had previously made only scooters, its management learned fast, and car production rose from 5,000 in 2001 to 180,000 units this year.

In the process, the company set up new production bases and angered the French PSA Group — which accuses Geely of using key technologies from the locally built Citroen Fukang (a Chinese version of the 1990s ZX hatch). The appearance of some of the offerings from Shanghai Maple, a Geely subsidiary, seems to give weight to such claims.

A year ago Geely introduced its first "modern" product, the CK1 Free Cruiser, which finally was a bold step away from the previous knockoffs. Earlier this year it was followed by the LG1 King Kong, and now comes the FC1 Vision.

A prototype of this car, which is Geely's biggest model so far, was shown at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show. Production has just started in Ningbo, Geely's main production base. The car, which is about the size of a Toyota Corolla, is powered by a 1.8-liter, 77-horsepower Geely-built engine mated to a continuously variable transmission.

A Geely official told Inside Line that the company intends to sell the Vision in the United States. In China it will sell for the equivalent of U.S. $12,000.

At Auto China, Geely will also show an odd, 1970s-sci-fi-movie-style prototype called the Fengyin, or Stealth Wind.

Ai Design Fashions "Post-Apocalyptic Road Rider"

TUCKAHOE, N.Y. — Think of it as a Mad Max-style ride for the new millennium.

Ai Design has given a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban some "biodiesel tweaks," a Brembo brake upgrade and Rolls-Royce inspired Wilton wool carpeting, and lavished other custom touches on the interior to create what it calls a "post-apocalyptic road rider."

ai bio diesel suburbanai bio diesel suburban The Ai team also gave the Suburban a 12-inch lift, on-/off-road suspension package and increased fuel capacity. Since Suburbans from that time frame were not offered from the factory with Chevy's Duramax diesel engine, Ai turned to Colorado-based Duramax Suburban for the conversion.

The engine was modified to handle the increased corrosive properties of biodiesel fuel. One the conversion was complete, Ai added what it calls "more traditional performance modifications, such as upgrading the transmission, turbochargers, exhaust system, fuel injection and electronic engine-control systems."

The Suburban got an updated version of the elaborate center console unit Ai designed for its Cigarette-branded Suburbans. The eco-cruiser also gets a CB radio, Edge engine-management controller, emergency lighting, PA controllers and nickel-plated carbon-fiber trim pieces. An Alpine F-1 audio system rounds out the package.

The price tag on the Ai biodiesel Suburban is $200,000.

2007 Volkswagen Passat R36

Remember the Volkswagen Passat W8? It used an oddball engine to turn the previous generation Passat into a proper Q-car road burner.

The weird W8 unit (which was basically two V4s driving a common crankshaft) has gone, but VW is back with another flagship hot Passat.

2007 Volkswagen Passat R362007 Volkswagen Passat R36 22007 Volkswagen Passat R36 32007 Volkswagen Passat R36 4 This one uses a much more conventional 3.6-litre V6 engine with 296bhp.

It's destined to be called the R36 and will crack 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds before topping out at a limited 155mph.

A DSG twin-clutch gearbox will be standard on both saloon and estate versions, as will four-wheel drive.

VW promises the R36 will be more distinct inside than the old W8, which is just as well because the new car is expected to cost close on £30,000 when it goes on sale in the UK sometime in 2007.

One thing the R36 is likely to have in common with the W8 is anvil-down-mineshaft depreciation.

Volvo XC90 muscles down

Think of the new Volvo XC90 SE Sport as the Bjorn Borg of the Swedish firm's range. It's all tight shorts and rough 'n' ready image, but at heart it's a very well-mannered chap.

Volvo XC90 But now Volvo has given the Sport a bit of the Rafael Nadal treatment. The off-roader has been ordered to spend a few hours down the gym and fill up on the protein shakes, because it's looking meaner and more muscular than before.

The alloy wheels have swelled to 19 inches and there are twin pipes, while strategic trimming has done away with the standard roof rails.

Inside, the SE Sport has unique black and white leather sports seats, a chunkier steering wheel and chronograph-style instruments.

Available with the usual diesel and petrol engines, the SE Sport will set you back between £37,270 and £45,950.

New Vauxhall Astra

For Friday amusement, take a look at this picture of the 'new' Vauxhall Astra and compare it with a picture of the 'old' Astra. Voila, an instant game of spot the difference.

New Vauxhall AstraNew Vauxhall Astra 2 Without spoiling your fun, Vauxhall has pointed out that there are new front and rear lights, a new front bumper and a smattering of chrome highlights.

The biggest changes are the ones you won't spot from just staring at the Astra because they're under the bonnet, in the shape of more emissions-friendly engines.

The 1.6-litre engine is revised to drop carbon dioxide emissions from 158g/km to 156g/km, while gaining 10bhp to produce 113bhp.

More importantly, there's a new turbocharged 1.6-litre motor with 177bhp to replace the old 167bhp 2.0-litre turbo.

This engine hauls the Astra from 0-62mph in 7.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 137mph.

Prices for the standard 1.6 Astra start at £13,515 and the turbo kicks off at £18,200.

The rest of the range goes up by £15, which hardly seems worth Vauxhall's while reprinting all of those brochures.

Jaguar, Cadillac Top Sales Satisfaction Survey

Jaguar ranks highest in satisfying buyers with the new-vehicle sales experience, says the J.D. Power and Associates annual sales satisfaction index study.

2007 jaguar s-type Cadillac ranks a distant 2nd, with Lincoln and Porsche tying for 3rd place. Mitsubishi was at the bottom of the heap.

Domestic automakers Ford and General Motors fared well this year, ranking above the industry average. However, below-average performers included Chrysler Group, Honda, Toyota and Nissan.

In a statement, J.D. Power noted that satisfaction is critical to closing a sale. It said nearly one-half of all shoppers who walk away from a dealership cite poor treatment as a reason. It noted that satisfaction is consistently lower on the weekend compared to weekdays, primarily due to taking longer to complete the transaction. It takes an average of 22 minutes longer to purchase a car on a Saturday or Sunday, Power noted.

Not a Smart bargain

If you offered us a brand-new car for a grand, we'd bite your hand off. Then we'd say yes.
If you then told us it was a new Smart ForTwo, we might be a touch less enthusiastic. But we'd still say yes.
But if you then told us that we'd have to buy two Merc limos at £165,000 a pop in order to qualify for said cheap Smart, we'd probably have to think again.

In the great league table of good value deals, spending £330,000 on a pair of limousines in order to save £5,000 on a ForTwo is languishing in the relegation zone along with that old 'pound of flesh' bargain.

But Binz, the Mercedes-Benz authorised coachbuilder who thought up this deal, reckons it's a sensible idea.

You see, the problem with owning an executive limo - apart from the fact that everyone will assume you're a despotic dictator - is that they're not all that practical for everyday tasks. Just nipping to the corner shop or dropping the kids off at dictator school necessitates a distinctly undignified parking manoeuvre, undermining your stately gravitas.

So Binz are prepared to throw in a cheap-as-chips Smart for your runaround tasks if you buy a couple of their executive Mercs, allowing you to retain your dignity in even the tightest parking spot.

Try as we might, we just can't picture Pol Pot popping out for the milk in a ForTwo.

Saab Aero X Snags Top Design Prize

LONDON — The Saab Aero X concept has been named Concept Car of the Year by Autocar magazine here.

Saab Aero XSaab Aero X 2 "The Aero X takes familiar Saab design cues and shows how they can be incorporated into modern architecture and plausibly extended even to a 400-horsepower supercoupe," said Autocar editor Chas Hallett.

The Saab Aero X made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. The Autocar prize pointed out the concept's dynamic stance and the designers' references to Saab's aircraft heritage. The concept is powered by a 400-hp turbocharged V6 BioPower engine that can run entirely on pure E100 bioethanol. In a statement on Wednesday, GM said: "As with the styling, the powertrain is a strong hint at what lies in the future for Saab."

This is the second year in a row that GM's Europe design team has won this award. Last year, the Opel Antara GTC was named Concept of the Year.

Aston Martin Vantage Roadster

In this month's magazine, we tackle the question that has vexed mankind for many years. Aston or Ferrari?
You'll have your own feelings on the subject - which we want to hear about here - but if you're still sitting on the fence, this gorgeous drop-top might be enough to swing you to the Aston camp.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is the Aston Martin Vantage Roadster.

aston martin roadsteraston martin roadster 2aston martin roadster 3aston martin roadster 4 Roadster. The very name implies spare and fuss-free design, a visual lightness that leaves the driver exposed as the centre of the action, and of attention.

Due to be unveiled at next month's Los Angeles Auto Show, the Roadster should hit the UK sometime next year.

It doesn't have quite the individuality or sheer suave impact of the fastback Vantage, but just look at it. The Roadster is a beautiful mix of aluminium and leather, and best of all it looks genuinely small - the real 'baby Aston' the V8 always promised to be.

For our money it might just be the most beautiful Aston of recent times.

Too often, chopping the top off a fastback messes up the visuals - the screen has to rake too far back and the rear end gets bloated and bulky. But Aston has done a stunning job with the Roadster.

The roof rears upwards from underneath a solidly hinged tonneau cover, which is plushly trimmed and shaped into a pair of whooshy-looking fairings behind your heads. Not that Aston pretends these improve aero, mind.

And it's supposed to be an all-weather everyday-use car, not one of Aston's collector specials, so the roof is fully weatherproof and has a glass rear screen.

Although there's no word on performance as yet, Aston is claiming that the Roadster will drive like its hard-top brother, so let's remind ourselves: a 4.2-litre V8 putting out 380 horses and seeing off 60 in under five seconds.

There's even the option of a flappy-paddle version of the six-speed box, which should solve that irksome gearshift of the Vantage.

Of course, the Roadster is going to benchmarked against the absurdly high standards of the 911. But it might just be better, in its own way.

The Vantage is never going to be as sharp as Porsche's surgical scalpel - it's just too, well, British. But it can provide more of an all-senses driving experience.

Drop the top, let in the engine noise and experience the best of British. Ferrari who?

Saab bio power

Saab has announced the addition of a new bioethanol engine to its line-up.
The 2.3t BioPower is a modified version of Saab's 2.3-litre turbo petrol unit, and will initially be available in the 9-5 saloon and estate.

saab bio power Saab reckons the BioPower will cut fossil carbon-dioxide emissions by up to 70 per cent without any loss in performance.

In fact, the BioPower delivers 210bhp and 228lb ft of torque, giving it 14 per cent more power and 11 per cent more pull than its petrol equivalent.

Bioethanol is a green fuel produced from commercial crops that does not significantly raise atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide.

It's not yet widely available in the UK, but don't worry - if you're not near a bioethanol fuel source (and we don't recommend brewing your own), the BioPower will still run on petrol or a mixture of the two.

The new 2.3-litre engine will sit alongside Saab's existing 2.0t BioPower model.

Prices for the bioethanol 9-5 will weigh in at about £1,000 more than the equivalent petrol model.

2006 Heico Sportiv Burton Snowboard Volvo C30 Concept

(from Volvo Press Release) Volvo C30 by Heico Sportiv and Burton Snowboards unleashed at 2006 SEMA Show.
Radically reborn and geared for outdoor adventure.
Las Vegas, Nevada (October 31, 2006) – If the thought of crisp mountain air, fresh powder and breathtaking vistas isn’t enough to set your mind racing, the Volvo C30 concept by Heico Sportiv and Burton Snowboards will. Customized, sport tuned and outfitted for active lifestyles, this one-of-a-kind show car embodies the snowboarding spirit of living life to the fullest.

2006 Heico Sportiv Burton Snowboard Volvo C30 Concept2006 Heico Sportiv Burton Snowboard Volvo C30 Concept 22006 Heico Sportiv Burton Snowboard Volvo C30 Concept 32006 Heico Sportiv Burton Snowboard Volvo C30 Concept 4 This cool ride is aimed at driving enthusiasts who are just as passionate about their cars as they are about the great outdoors. Never willing to settle for the norm, their quest for adventure knows no bounds. Conquering the halfpipe, pushing the limits at board parks or heading for the backcountry is what it’s all about. Since their clothing, choice of music and attitude defy convention, so too does this spin on Volvo’s new sport compact.

Heico, the premier Volvo tuner in Europe, partnered with Burton Snowboards, the world's leading snowboard company, for the C30 project. The cargo compartment is tricked out with an integrated snowboard storage system complete with boot, helmet and gear storage units. 2008 Burton Vapor snowboards, C60 bindings and SL-10 boots will also be showcased with the concept car. Custom blue LED lighting makes the gear glisten in the dark like so many snowflakes on a moonlit winter night.

At home on the switchbacks or the road to the slopes, the Heico/Burton C30 concept is part Paris-Dakar raider, part efficient weekend gear hauler and part stylish, sporty performer. It wears a Heico-Ice 7-stage pearl-effect paint scheme with a wicked “camo” theme. Heico’s custom fabricated full body kit adds a unique front fascia with “cornering” fog lights, a sport grille, side skirts and fender flares plus a rear skirt with integrated diffuser panel.

Heico energized the C30’s powerplant with an extra rush of adrenaline. Volvo’s 2.5-liter Euro-spec engine is fitted with performance enhancements including a modified Borg-Warner turbo and wastegate and air-to-air intercooler with electronically adjusted water injection, all managed by Heico’s power upgrade ECU. Spent exhaust gases are routed through a Metal racing catalyst mated to Heico’s stainless steel sport exhaust finished with quad-tip pipes.

With an estimated 300 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 310 lb.-ft. of torque on tap, long drives to the wilderness are transformed from a routine chore to an extreme sport. When the traffic clears, downshift the 6-speed manual gearbox, put the pedal to the metal and ear-to-ear grins are guaranteed. Of course, Volvo recommends that the driver observe all posted speed limits.

Right out of the box, the stock C30 channels the engine’s torque to the front wheels. Thinking outside the box, Heico transformed the show car to full-time all-wheel drive. By no means is this a slam-dunk conversion. Serious engineering work was needed to get it right.

Heico collaborated with the pros at Haldex of Sweden, world-renown for their track record as an OEM supplier of AWD components to Volvo Cars. The C30 concept is fitted with electronically controlled AWD with custom software integration that automatically transfers more power to the wheels with the best grip. The benefits on slippery surfaces are obvious, yet AWD also improves handling on completely dry roads.

Active enthusiasts expect flexibility as well as performance. So this special C30 is decked out with front and rear Heico coil-over suspension that’s adjustable for ride height. Carving corners with glee while turning heads in the process is the job of Volution® 8 x 18-inch sport alloy wheels shod with Toyo R888 245/40R-18 tires. In between the action, scope out the custom designed Heico pattern on the tread.

Because all good rides have to come to an end, stomping on the binders brings the C30 to a stop with authority. The brakes feature Heico 4-piston calipers with 320mm custom vented and slotted rotors in front and 285mm kits in the back. A vibrant blue hue has been applied to the calipers for a totally rad look.

The cabin has the look and feel of premium quality materials. Modified Volvo sport bucket seats are trimmed with handcrafted “Lugano” leather in black and alpaca gray hides with gray stitching and embossed with the Burton logo. Heico further enhanced the interior with its aluminum sport pedals and footrest, shift knob, e-brake handle, door pin set and floor mats. The thick-rimmed steering wheel with auxiliary controls is trimmed to match the seat upholstery.

The real kicker is the custom leather center console featuring integrated iPOD™ and MOTO Q units plus Motorola Bluetooth hands-free system. Volvo’s Premium Sound System delivers 650 watts through 10 Dynaudio® speakers. Dolby® Pro Logic II Surround sound reproduces audio tracks with such clarity it’s like taking your favorite band along for an awesome journey to the slopes.

Heico Sportiv was founded outside of Frankfurt, Germany in 1995. It has grown to become Europe’s leading Volvo tuning firm. Heico has the longest running history of endurance racing featuring Volvo cars spanning 12 years. This serves as the engineering basis for offering high-quality components for Volvo road cars. Tuner Special: TechArt Porsche 911 Turbo

LEONBERG-HOFINGEN, Germany — Just in time for the big German tuner show in Essen, TechArt unveils its latest package for the Porsche 911 Turbo — not too wild, but plenty of sting in the tail.

TechArt Porsche 911 TurboTechArt Porsche 911 Turbo 2 TechArt started by installing larger turbochargers on the 3.6-liter flat-6 engine as well as a recalibrated engine control unit, a sport air filter and a stainless steel exhaust system with new manifolds and performance catalytic converters.
The modifications bump engine output to 580 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. That's good enough to trim 0-60-mph acceleration to less than 3.5 seconds and boost top speed to 211 mph. Power is transferred to all four wheels through a modified six-speed gearbox that gets a larger transmission-oil cooler. (The TechArt engine kit is also available on Tiptronic-equipped models.)
TechArt fits its VarioPlus coil-over suspension with adjustable dampers that can be set automatically or via a switch on the instrument panel. It permits the ride height to be adjusted by up to 1 inch.
Of course, the package would not be complete without a set of TechArt Formula five-spoke wheels mounted with 20-inch Conti SportContact 3 tires.
Exterior enhancements include a front spoiler and a modified retractable rear wing, as well as a rear diffuser and side sills. The cabin can be trimmed in leather and aluminum.
The full package price for the TechArt 911 Turbo is about $257,000.

2006 Evolve Volvo C30 Concept

(from Volvo Press Release) Customized Volvo C30 by Evolve Debuts at 2006 SEMA Show
Cutting-edge design meets radical motorsports technology
Las Vegas, Nevada (October 31, 2006) – Take the outrageous notion of blending a Formula One car with a hot European street machine and you’ve got the idea behind the Volvo C30 concept by Evolve Cars Inc. This one-off show car started life as a European spec version of Volvo’s youthful new C30 – unveiled to rave reviews at the 2006 Paris Motor Show. Letting its imagination run wild, Evolve created an enthusiast’s dream machine that draws on F1 technology and its renowned track record of maximizing the performance potential of Volvo vehicles.

2006 Evolve Volvo C30 Concept2006 Evolve Volvo C30 Concept 22006 Evolve Volvo C30 Concept 32006 Evolve Volvo C30 Concept 4 With its stunning aesthetics combined with staggering performance capabilities, the Evolve C30 targets the enthusiast who seeks the ultimate Volvo sport compact. From the street, to the strip to the track, this driver wants a car that can deliver the goods on the promise of serious performance, excellent handling and head-turning style.

To achieve the muscular stance it envisioned the Evolve team began by removing all the vertical panels on the car. It then painstakingly added six inches of width at the rear fenders, tapering to zero stretch at the tips of the front fenders. The pronounced wedge shape and broad rear shoulders give the C30 a menacing hunkered-down look. Up front, an adjustable F1 style front spoiler commands attention. At the rear, a functional diffuser accelerates air as it exits the vehicle to help keep the car glued to the tarmac at speed. A roof-mounted rear spoiler can be adjusted by the driver to tailor downforce as desired. The body was sprayed in an eye-popping shade of BASF Glasurit Competition Yellow with Silver and Graphite highlights.

Under the hood, Evolve has modified the stock C30’s 2.5-liter turbocharged engine to deliver pavement-blistering performance. A combination of increased air volume and pressure matched with proper fuel and spark delivery through tuning yields an estimated 507 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and a stump-pulling 468 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,800 rpm. Sequential twin turbochargers are the keys to extracting maximum performance. Carefully engineered plumbing and boost management with Turbosmart components tie the turbos together to create a brutally forceful combination.

Instead of a traditional intercooler, Evolve devised a totally cool solution it dubs the Charged Air Cooler. Integrated with the factory air conditioning refrigerant system, an evaporator was constructed inside a fabricated sheet metal intake manifold. Hot, charged air from the turbos crosses over super-cooled piping prior to entering the throttle body. This dramatically reduces the intake charge temperature making the heated air considerably cooler than ambient outside temperature. Engine exhaust enters a five-into-one header, feeds the turbos, passes through a catalytic converter and exits via a custom-built muffler and twin, rear-facing exhaust tips located high in the quarter panels.

While the Volvo C30 is a front-drive car, Evolve decided to leverage the full potential of its talents by converting it to all-wheel drive. This arduous task required underbody modifications to route a driveshaft to the newly installed rear differential. Electronically controlled AWD employs custom software created for this application by Haldex of Sweden – a name familiar to Volvo aficionados as the supplier of Volvo’s other production models. A 6-speed manual transmission puts the driver in charge of the action.

Continuing its quest for creativity, Evolve engineered and built its own brake system for the C30. The front caliper assembly consists of more than 100 components resulting in a 14-piston billet aluminum work of art. Rear calipers are six piston assemblies. Each piston/cylinder is finned and exposed to 360º of airflow to reduce the tendency for brake fluid to boil during repeated high-speed use. The massive two-piece directionally vaned rotors measure 386mm in front and 362mm in the rear and feature an exclusive Evolve slot pattern. Evolve devised a mechanical/hydraulic parking brake system that uses stock brake handle components to exert hydraulic pressure upon the front calipers. Its two small “master cylinders” are mounted on the front strut tower bar for easy viewing. The parking brake system locks the front wheels allowing the driver to “load” the turbochargers for brutal off the line acceleration.

To optimize handling, Evolve once again took matters into its own hands. The front suspension is fitted with hand-built strut tubes around double-adjustable Koni cartridges. Heavy-duty Eibach springs support the front end for a firm, track-ready setup. With the switch to AWD, a clean slate approach was taken for the rear suspension. Fabricated control arms connect to an adjustable ladder bar to keep the independently acting rear wheels firmly planted under varying loads. Koni struts activated via pushrod assemblies can be spied from the rear of the car through the lower air diffuser. Evolve’s quick height adjustment suspension enables the driver to vary the front ride height underhood using a standard socket on a strut-to-chassis interface. Rear height is similarly changed using a single adjuster positioned in the center of the rear diffuser.

Rounding out the performance package is an aggressive set of wheels and tires. The Evolve C30 rides on 265/30-19 Pirelli Pzero Rosso tires in front and monstrous 355/25-19s at the rear. The massive rear tires neatly tucked into the modified rear fenders gives the car a track-ready appearance. Multi-piece forged alloy Evolve wheels are sized 19 x 9 inches in front and 19 x 14 inches in the rear. As utilized on most every racecar, Evolve wheels feature a true single center nut method of attachment. Graphite painted center sections with spun brushed aluminum wheel hoops gives the Evolve C30 just the right attitude.

In true racecar fashion, Evolve took a minimalist approach to interior design. A six-point chrome moly safety structure was meticulously TIG welded in place. Evolve leather upholstery in two-tone perforated black and smooth graphite colors is contrasted with yellow stitching. The same pattern is applied to the steering wheel. The C30’s signature floating center console was remade with translucent plastic to serve as a focal point for the interior. Volvo’s stock Premium Sound System features 650 watts of Alpine® amplified power, 10 loudspeakers from Dynaudio® and Dolby® Pro Logic II Surround sound. Evolve added a hands-free Bluetooth mobile phone system for safer communication while driving.

Evolve Cars, Inc. designs, builds and markets unique styling and performance products specifically for late model Volvo vehicles. Based in Southern California, Evolve products are distributed domestically and internationally through select Volvo dealerships and other independent suppliers. Alfa Romeo Plots Rest of the Decade

TURIN, Italy — Fiat has outlined its hopes for Alfa Romeo until 2010. Fortunately, it has put all those hopes online for the world to see.

Alfa Romeo sold 137,000 cars in 2005 and hopes to sell 170,000 this year. But there's an ambitious goal: to shift 300,000 units in 2010. By that time Alfa, also intends to have made inroads to the U.S. market.

alfa romeo junioralfa romeo junior 2 Looking at the presentation of Antonio Baravelle, chief of Alfa, it is apparent that the company has an image problem: Only the 147 sits well with young, well-to-do families; all the other models attract older folks. To meet its sales target, Alfa needs another, sub-147 volume model. To be called Junior, it will be introduced in the summer of 2008. It will be a sporty three-door hatch, less than 157 inches long, and will fit into the under-$19,000 price segment. Another new model coming in 2009 will fill the gap between the 147 and the 159.

Alfa will also cash in on the crossover boom. Many fans wanted to see the stunning Kamal concept of 2003 put into production. This did not happen, but with the CXOver, which is scheduled for early 2010, its spirit will live on. CXOvers will cost somewhere between $36,000 and $57,000.

At the top of the range comes the successor to the 166. To be called 169, it will be a rakish executive sedan, priced between $50,000 and $70,000. Alfa debuted the gorgeous high-performance 8C Competizione at late September's Paris auto show, announcing that it will come to the U.S. in early 2008.

A "More Masculine" Smart Fortwo Makes Its Debut

STUTTGART, Germany — The new Smart Fortwo made its world debut on Friday with the news that an "uprated" Brabus variant is in the works for late 2007.

brabus smart fortwoSmart insisted that its redesigned city car has a "more masculine appearance," although that might be a bit hard to discern by Americans used to the pickup trucks and SUVs that dominate U.S. roads. The Smart Fortwo will be launched in April and go on sale in the U.S. in 2008.

More power is on tap in the Fortwo's engine lineup. The 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine delivers 61, 71 or 84 horsepower. The engine power of the Fortwo CDI has increased by 10 percent and now stands at 45 hp. All engines are linked to a Getrag manual five-speed transmission. The gas versions of the Fortwo now have a maximum speed of 90 mph, a gain of 6 mph from the previous model.

The Fortwo has been stretched a bit, increasing 7.7 inches in length. The luggage compartment can hold 7.8 cubic feet, 2.4 more than the previous model.

The car has also been reworked to meet U.S. crash regulations. The instrument panel is no longer curved in an S shape, for example. Passive safety has been improved with new head/thorax side airbags.

Ferrari F430 Challenge Stradale Getting Closer

The Ferrari F430 Modena is in the twilight of its life, with a temporary waiver to U.S. federal government advanced airbag requirements expiring in two years, but that doesn't mean it won't go out in style.

ferrari f430 modena The substance to rumors of an F430 Challenge Stradale has been confirmed, and the timetable is uncertain but likely to happen quickly.

"It is obviously a project that is on the drawing board," admitted a high-level company source.

The only question is when the car will arrive, considering that time is running short for the F430. But the previous incarnation of the car, the 360 Challenge Stradale exploded onto the scene with little notice, the source said. "The 360 Challenge Stradale really snuck up on us a little bit," he said. Despite the low profile of that car's development program, the result was a car with 70 percent different components, according to Rowley.

So despite the fact that the new F430 Challenge Stradale will arrive late in the car's life, it could still be thoroughly tweaked for improved performance. "The last one was so good, I'll expect it to be improved as much," the source said.

What kind of improvements can we expect? The 360 Challenge Stradale, you'll recall, did not have a re-tuned, more powerful version of the standard car's engine, for example. "The two big differences on the 360 Challenge Stradale were that it was lighter, and that it was lower," observed Allie Ash, owner of the Ferrari of Washington racing team. For track duty "adding lightness" is even better than adding horsepower, and doesn't require recertification of emissions compliance.

The F430 uses aluminum extensively, so perhaps carbon-fiber components will be used in the quest for reduced mass.

How customers will get their hands on one of the new cars is another question. Ferrari of Washington has a six-year waiting list for F430s, so the customers who are on the list already know they will be getting the car's replacement, not the current car, said Ash. But considering that list, how will orders for the Challenge Stradale be filled?

With no official announcement from Ferrari, dealers can not begin accepting orders for a non-existent car. That hasn't stopped customers from offering deposits, though, said Ashe. "I've got several customers who want to leave deposits for the car."

Shanghai Volkswagen has released a very carefully worded press release that reveals next to nothing. But it does say that the name Neeza comes from ancient Chinese mythology and conveys the message of extraordinary power — and that the concept was painted red to highlight that it is a Chinese car.

The Neeza is intended to demonstrate the capabilities of local designers and engineers. The company also says this concept is the first step toward making Shanghai Volkswagen a company with its own independent design team, not just a manufacturing enterprise.

VW said some elements of the Neeza may appear on future Shanghai Volkswagen models.

Viral marketing may sound like an NHS sexual health scheme, but it's really a nefarious way for car manufacturers to tempt us into wanting their cars.

It's a website for the totally fictitious sport of Qashqai Car Games, which includes a video clip of a Qashqai leaping around like a hyperactive Jack Russell.
It's all computer generated, but we still reckon it's cool.

Seat Leon Cupra

Seat has just announced the price of its new hatch, the Leon Cupra.

Seat Leon Cupra The Cupra boasting a top speed of 153mph and the ability to knock off 0-60mph in just 6.4 seconds.

It just doesn't feel as engaging and lively as its cousin, the brilliant Golf GTi. It may be quick and loud(ish), but The Cupra's a bit of a county bumpkin beside the slick and sophisticated Golf.

However, the price might help to make up for these shortcomings.

Seat says the Leon will cost £19,595, which is £765 less than the cheapest Golf GTi and £1265 less than GTi five-door.

That definitely makes the Leon Cupra a more appealing prospect, but we'll still take the Golf, thanks.

Kia Carens

Any amorous couples who've had that sticky conversation about starting a family will know that parenthood isn't a decision to be entered into lightly.

Kia Carens But Kia reckons it can sweeten the deal by offering you a free Carens MPV if you're expecting.
There's just one tiny catch.

You have to give birth to quintuplets. That's right. Five of 'em.

Unfortunately, the odds of that happening are about one in 57 million. Even if you're pretty confident in your own virility, that's still something of a long shot.

In fact, the chance of having quintuplets is four times less than that of winning the lottery. So let's weigh this up.

The cost of entering the lottery? A quid. The rewards? Buckets of cash, fast cars, round-the-world cruises and the chance to flick the Vs at your bank manager.

The cost of quintuplet parenthood? Expensive champagne, candles and false promises. The reward? Five little terrors. Oh, and a Kia Carens.

Suddenly that decision doesn't seem quite so tricky.

Mitsubishi To Roll Out 2008 Lancer

Mitsubishi says it will showcase the new Lancer sport sedan at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, with a spring 2007 launch set for North America.

Mitsubishi 2008 Lancer The Japanese automaker on Friday released a sketch of the car, which it noted shares its design language with the 2005 Concept-X and the Concept-Sportback show cars.
Design cues of the '08 Lancer include a trademark "shark nose," deep-set "eyes," a wide track, a low stance and long hood/short deck proportions. The new Lancer comes off Mitsubishi's first global platform, known as Project Global, and shares underpinnings with the redesigned Outlander.

The company said the Lancer will include entry-level models all the way up to an all-new Lancer Evolution supercar.

In a statement, Mitsubishi said Project Global will "support the launch of several new Mitsubishi vehicles over the next few years, designed from the outset for world markets." It also said models from business partners DaimlerChrysler — with which it was co-developed — and PSA Peugeot Citroën will also be based on this global platform.

Four wheels KTM

KTM is well noted for its hardcore off-road and sports motorcycles, and now it's looking to dabble in four wheels.
KTMThe Austrian bike manufacturer has built some quads, and this four-wheeler is a seriously sporty rival to the Lotus Elise.

KTM has been working with Dallara, a company with a history in Formula One, to develop the roadster.

Power comes from a mid-mounted 2.0-litre turbo engine bought from Volkswagen. It looks likely the engine will put out 250bhp and drive through either a six-speed manual gearbox or VW's DSG sequential manual 'box.

The link to VW means the KTM could be serviced at Volkswagen dealers, but the car is set to be sold at KTM's existing motorcycle dealers.

KTM boss Stefan Pierer reckons there's sufficient demand to sell 1000 of the roadsters every year. We'll get the chance to have a proper look during the Geneva Motorshow in March 2007.

Suzuki Cervo Is 10th New Minicar on the Market

It's looking like a bumper year for the kei, or minicar, category in Japan, where the 10th new model in the segment has just been introduced by the country's biggest minicar manufacturer, Suzuki. The redesigned Cervo heats up the race in the 2 million-strong segment

suzuki cervo
Toyota's Daihatsu subsidiary and Suzuki together control more than 60 percent of this segment, Bloomberg News reports. In turn, minicars make up 35 percent of total new-car sales in Japan. So any new model in this class is very important.

Bmw M5: M is for Manual

In a bigger swing than even George Bush expected, BMW has given in to American M5 buyers' whining and decided to offer a manual gearbox for its über-saloon.

bmw m5 Seems the Americans can't get their heads round the idea of a sports car that doesn't have a stick shift.

In the land of the automatic gearbox, this might seem strange, but American M5 cheque-toters have been holding back from signing on the line till they can have a manual 'box.

BMW in the USA is even going as far as offering the six-speeder manual as a no-cost option to the seven-speed sequential manual gearbox.

Tough decision. Do you want the extra swiftness of the SMG gearbox or the fun of chopping and changing ratios yourself?

But don't get your Euro hopes up. BMW says there are no plans to bring the manual gearbox to this side of the pond.

2007 Mazda CX-7 Adrenaline

LAS VEGAS, Nevada, October 31, 2006 – Blurring the lines between a sport-utility vehicle and a sports car, at the Specialty Equipment Market Association’s (SEMA) annual show here, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today unveiled a more powerful, more aggressive CX-7 SUV, code-named Adrenaline. Designed and built by Mazda Design North America in Irvine, Calif., Adrenaline is a truly high-performance sport-crossover vehicle designed to promote the essence of all Mazdas, best described as the “Emotion of Motion.”

2007 Mazda CX-7 Adrenaline2007 Mazda CX-7 Adrenaline 22007 Mazda CX-7 Adrenaline 32007 Mazda CX-7 Adrenaline 42007 Mazda CX-7 Adrenaline 5 Based on the all-new Mazda CX-7, Adrenaline is a fully running prototype that showcases Mazda’s commitment to performance. “Adrenaline is athletically inspired for people who demand a car that is as lean and fit as they are and represents their passions, yet doesn’t sacrifice in hauling those passions around,” said Franz von Holzhausen, design director, MNAO. “Adrenaline is tuned like an avid cyclist, and delivers on the promise.”

To give Mazda’s latest crossover SUV a true sports car feel, Mazda engineers converted the CX-7’s stock six-speed automatic transmission to a six-speed manual, and, as CX-7 shares its driveline with MAZDASPEED6, they naturally chose to use the same transmission found in the MAZDASPEED6.With the help of rallyist and drifter Rhys Millen and his team in Huntington Beach, Calif., Adrenaline pushes out more than 300 horsepower, thanks to a re-tuned engine with a modified intake system, header with a free-flow exhaust and more boost from the re-plumped turbo. Other performance enhancements include a remote oil cooler and repositioned intercooler located opposite the oil cooler in the front fascia.

A wider, lower stance and a bold new face give the all-wheel-drive Adrenaline an aggressive and firmly planted sporty stance. Unique design cues include new front and rear exterior styling, a clam shell front clip, wrap around rear spoiler and an innovative rear glass design. New fenders and doors give Adrenaline a three-inch wider overall stance. Wheel wells are filled out through the fitment of 22-inch EXE wheels with a greater-than-stock offset and 285/35-R22 Yokohama tires, providing an aggressive look and sure on-the-road ride and handling.

Re-trimmed to suit an avid cyclist, Adrenaline’s interior includes a leather-wrapped instrument panel, a center console-integrated iPOD and sporty, laser-etched front and rear bucket seats. An integrated bike rack runs down the spine of the roof, while clear moon -roof panels run from header to spoiler, adding to the feeling of space in the interior. Removable DVD systems from Visteon are integrated into the interior roof panel.

Inspired by the yellow jerseys worn by bicyclists to signify stage and overall winners, Mazda designers chose gradating yellow paint theme, which gives the impression of the vehicle punching through the atmosphere. It is bright, bold and sporty.

Guaranteed to turn heads at SEMA, Adrenaline delivers on the promise of Zoom-Zoom and adroitly crosses the line between an SUV and a sports car – more practical, but just as much fun.
2007 Mazda CX-7

Launched in May, 2006, the 2007 CX-7 is a highly styled crossover SUV with a decided soul of a sportscar. Produced entirely on Mazda-derived platform architecture, the five-passenger CX-7 embodies an astute blend of sports car verve and SUV practicality, resulting in a fun-to-drive SUV that represents everything a Mazda SUV should be.

Prominent front fenders, A-pillars rooted at the body’s leading edge, a sharply raked windshield and Mazda’s signature five-pointed grille clearly register this new model as a Mazda. CX-7 is fitted with a turbocharged and intercooled 2.3-liter four-cylinder direct- injection gasoline engine similar to that fitted to the MAZDASPEED3 and MAZDASPEED6 but producing 244 horsepower in this application. Mazda CX-7 delivers an estimated 23 mpg in combined driving.

Bristol Fighter T

Very British thing, tea. Which is a bit strange, given that it comes from thousands of miles away on the subcontinent.
You could say the same thing about the T. The Bristol Fighter T, that is. Despite sourcing its power from an 8-litre V10, usually found traversing the USA in a Dodge Viper, the Fighter T is as British as cucumber sandwiches and botched penalty shootouts.

Bristol Fighter TBristol Fighter T 2 It's got that understated British look. No brushed aluminium trim or exposed carbon fibre here. That'd be far too ostentatious for a car generally favoured by wealthy yet chronically withdrawn aristocrats.

There's a few visual nods to the awesome power on tap under the hood. Bristol aficionados will spot the twin side-mounted exhausts and subtle rear spoiler, but for the most part the Fighter T looks almost inconspicuous.

But don't be fooled. The Fighter T is quick.

That Yank-sourced all-aluminium block has been fitted with twin turbos allowing it to produce... wait for it... 1012bhp. Yes, that's more than a Bugatti Veyron.

The torque figures are equally frightening. The Fighter T develops over 900lb ft of torque between 3500rpm and 6000rpm, with 1036lb ft available at just 4500rpm.

All of which is enough to propel the Fighter T from 0-60 in less than 3.5 seconds, and on to an electronically limited maximum speed of 225mph. Bristol says that if it removed the limiter, the Fighter would still be accelerating past 270.

Bristol are targeting the Mercedes/McLaren SLR market with the Fighter T, and with those performance figures such a boast doesn't look too silly. But with a high roofline and narrow body, the Fighter looks nothing like any of the wide, wedge-like supercars on the market today. Why not?

The trick, says Bristol, is all in the drag. A rear wake diffuser gives the Fighter T a drag coefficient of just 0.27 compared to the Bugatti Veyron's 0.39. Which means that the Fighter T is as slippery as a greased eel, and doesn't need much in the way of downforce-inducing gubbins.

No, it's not exactly attractive. Then again, neither is the SLR McLaren. And does that have leather-matched varnish? Thought not.

Interestingly, Bristol isn't exactly sure how many Fighter Ts it will make. Production starts soon, with the first deliveries expected late next summer. But with only 20 Fighters produced each year it's unlikely that more than a handful of T-specified cars will be made.

If you can convince Bristol to build you one, the Fighter T will set you back about £335,000. That's less than half the price of a Veyron. Bargain.

Tempting Byd F8

Not so much a Chinese takeaway as a Chinese take-off, the Byd F8 shamelessly cribs the style of the Mercedes CLK to become China's first ever convertible with a folding metal roof.

Byd F8Byd F8 2 The F8 is due to have the covers taken off at the upcoming Beijing Motorshow. Visitors will also have a chance to ogle its rear end, which resembles that of the Vauxhall Astra TwinTop.

The roof retracts in 25 seconds and is said to reveal a four seater cabin with decent space in the rear.

There's plenty of standard equipment included with the F8 for China's ever increasing middle classes to fiddle with, such as a DVD player and bluetooth capabilities.

Byd has no plans as yet to export the F8 around the world, but it goes on sale in China early in 2007 with a price tag of around £15,400.

The Evolander: Mitsu Ute Gets "Evo" Treatment

LAS VEGAS — Mitsubishi calls it getting "EVO-ived." What this means is that the Japanese automaker tuned its '07 Outlander with an "urban performance" theme.

mitsubishi evolander The Evolander uses the Outlander's 3.0-liter V6 engine rated at 220 horsepower and tweaks it to 300 hp with the help of an ATI/Roadrace Engineering Procharger system.

The engine is linked to a six-speed automatic transmission that the company says is actuated by the same magnesium-alloy paddle shifters that will be part of the equipment of the next-generation performance model.

The Evolander is outfitted with lightweight 20-inch OZ wheels and high-performance Yokohama Advan ST performance tires. The Evolander has a more aggressive and aerodynamic look than the Outlander, thanks to lowered side sills, fender vents, a rear diffuser and a Ralliart rear spoiler.

The cabin gets Recaro Sport racing seats, a rear DVD entertainment system and a Rockford Fosgate 650-watt audio system.

Five star

A proper supercar for less than £20,000? Yep, that'll be the Factory Five GTM from the USA. But there's a catch... you have to finish building it yourself. Five starFive star 2Five star 3 That's not quite so unusual in the USA, where Noble sells cars that require the engine to be supplied and fitted by the customer.

In the case of the GTM, the engine is a Corvette V8, offering anything from 350 to 515bhp. Factory Five reckons the 350bhp 5.7-litre V8 can do 0-60mph in around 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 180mph, so just think what's possible with the 7.0-litre V8 from a Corvette Z-06.

You'll also need to source the suspension, brakes and a Porsche gearbox for the GTM. Factory Five claims the Corvette has an excellent supply network, which should make it easy to obtain parts.

The basic kit costs £10,500 and Factory Five estimate it should take a decent home mechanic around 300 hours to complete a car. We reckon the result is worth it.

Spy Shots: Mercedes GLK

STUTTGART, Germany — New pictures have emerged of the 2009 Mercedes GLK, the company's compact SUV, soon-to-be peer of the BMW X3 and Audi's coming Q5.

Mercedes GLKMercedes GLK 2Mercedes GLK 3 At first sight the test car looks like a disguised GL, but in reality this prototype is considerably smaller than Mercedes' full-size sport-ute. Translated, the name GLK means basically "short version of GL" as K is a diminutive of the German "kurz," meaning short.

The GLK is using technical components from the yet-to-come 2008 Mercedes C-Class, which is set to debut in March 2007, and it will keep very close in design to the recently launched GL-Class. The GLK may debut as a 2009 model at the Frankfurt auto show in September 2007, while Geneva 2008 remains a possibility.

Power is expected to come from a 3.5-liter V6 with Mercedes 4Matic all-wheel drive standard. All versions are expected to have the 7G-Tronic TouchShift automatic transmission. Later on there could be a V8-powered GLK63 AMG version.

Tesla electric car: Silent revolution

With petrol prices hitting record highs in the US, interest in electric cars appears to be sparking once again. Despite a resounding lack of federal initiative, a growing number of entrepreneurs have decided to give the electric car business a go.

teslatesla 2tesla 3 Perhaps the most hopeful of the electric conveyances currently being pitched in the States is the Tesla; the brainchild of Elon Musk, the founder of PayPal, eBay's highly lucrative finance arm.

Named after Nikola Tesla, father of the alternating current, the two-seater was introduced to the press and a high-flying assortment of do-gooders and political animals, at a ceremony in a Santa Monica aircraft hangar in late July. An unabashed sports car, the Tesla, it is claimed, will accelerate to 60mph in a supercar-fast 4.0secs.

However, the key to the Tesla's success, say its hopeful backers, will be advanced, lightweight, quick-charging lithium-ion batteries - the sort you might find in your laptop - which permit a decent range of 250 miles on a single charge and a maximum speed of 130mph.

Whatever its range or utility, price may well remain a market inhibitor. With an estimated $100,000 price tag, the Tesla is meant to generate only enough sales to underwrite more popularly priced models for mass production.

Special forces: Lotus Exige

The Lotus Exige has never been the easiest beast to live with. Aggressive and uncompromising, it snaps around with the adrenaline-fuelled poise of a hungry pitbull.

Lotus ExigeLotus Exige 2 But that level of aggression obviously wasn't enough for the boys over in Norfolk. They've poked their pitbull with a sharp stick, given it a quadruple shot of espresso and insulted its mother and her bedroom habits.

And this is the result. To celebrate the Exige's victory in this season's British GT3 Championship, Lotus has released the belligerent Exige S British GT Special Edition. Yep, it's a bit of a mouthful.

Based on the Exige S, the Special Edition gets a racing-style makeover, with a quad-stripe paint job, GT badging and sports trim. It clocks 60mph in 4.1 seconds, compared to the S's pedestrian 4.3 seconds.

You'll pay an extra two grand for the privilege of a few shiny badges, which sounds a bit steep in our book. But when you bolt on the optional GT pack, things start to get interesting.

Designed specifically for track work, the GT Pack adds 25bhp to the Exige, boosting overall power to 243bhp. This brings the 0-60 time below four seconds, and increases the top speed to 155mph.

The GT Pack also provides two-way adjustable dampers and whopping 308mm two-piece front disc brakes with four piston calipers.

Due to Lotus's general aversion to mod cons, air conditioning is a cost option. Interestingly, Lotus has designed the air cooling to cut out when the driver uses full throttle, as they say this helps keep power up without affecting cabin temperature.

A fully-specced Exige Special Edition will set you back over £42,000 on the road. That's a lot of cash for something that won't even carry your golf clubs.

So make the rational choice. Give up golf, take up table tennis.

Volvo Caresto V8 Speedster

Even when Volvo commissions a good ol' American-style hot rod concept like the Caresto V8 Speedster for the SEMA show, you're still liable to spot such telltale Volvo touches as an ethanol-fueled engine that is "tuned with the environment in mind," according to the company's press release.

VW's Thunder Bunny Evokes "Rabid Rabbit"

Volkswagen says the Thunder Bunny is designed to answer the question, "What happens when you give a modern Rabbit to one of the original water-cooled-Volkswagen tuners?"

The answer apparently is speed, with an overlay of whimsy. The Thunder Bunny, built in commemoration of Neuspeed's original "rabid rabbit," features a thunderous exhaust note thanks to a newly developed turbocharger system.

The system was designed by Neuspeed specifically for VW's 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine. It includes a modified intake manifold, Garrett ball-bearing turbocharger and an air-to-air intercooler. VW says boost is restricted to a maximum of seven pounds in this Stage 1 kit, but it still produces 225 horses, 75 more than the stock 2.5-liter engine. Additional details include a performance clutch and a Quaife differential.

The Thunder Bunny has a candy white exterior and a body kit that includes a larger central grille and a muscular rear valance that frames a twin R32-style exhaust from Neuspeed. The paint is overlaid with pearl silver graphics. As with the original Thunder Bunny, the forged alloy wheels are painted gold. The front brakes are 12.9-inch two-piece floating cross-drilled discs from Brembo, gripped by bunny-bedecked Brembo four-piston brake calipers.

The Thunder Bunny's suspension system is fitted with a Bilstein coil-over shock system and APS/Neuspeed sway bars. The system is adjustable for ride height and shock stiffness, making the car suitable for either the street or the track.

In the cabin, the stock GTI seats are covered in black and white checkered tweed that harks backs to the early 1980s. White carbon-fiber interior trim rounds out the package.

Volkswagen R GTI Debuts

Volkswagen's California Design Center has created its vision of the "hot hatch" of the future in the R GTI.

Volkswagen R GTI An evolution of the R concepts from last year's SEMA show, the R GTI features carbon-fiber body panels from OSIR Design with a black paint scheme, blacked-out headlamp housings, R32 taillamps with smoked lenses, and central twin exhaust pipes.

Tuner APR started with VW's 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, replacing the turbocharger with a larger Garrett unit. Output jumps to 375 horsepower on 93-octane fuel (400 hp on 100-octane race fuel). VW claims 0-60-mph acceleration takes a mere 4.8 seconds.

H&R Tuning supplied the suspension mods, including coil-over shocks, springs and stabilizer bars, and lowered ride height as much as 2.5 inches. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup performance tires are mounted on 19-inch custom wheels, and Brembo disc brakes are fitted.

The cabin is trimmed in black leather with red stitching, with Recaro buckets and OSIR black carbon-fiber trim.

VW says the R GTI is a one-off with no immediate production plans.

Dodge Challenger Super Stock

America's rediscovered love affair with muscle cars is blossoming with those good ol' boys building race versions of the latest crop of V8s.

Dodge has come up with the Challenger Super Stock to stun the crowds at the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) show in Las Vegas.

Dodge Challenger Super StockDecked out in stars 'n' stripes livery with a hunkered stance, hood hump and rear lip spoiler, this Challenger has another wee surprise in store.

Under the bonnet of the Super Stock concept is Dodge's new V8 engine and it's a Hemi.

It packs 392 cubic inches, which in Olde English is 6.3 litres, so it's good to see Dodge isn't letting environmental concerns curtail its sports car programme.

Three versions of the engine are in the pipeline, but the only one we're interested in is the full-house 540bhp version running on old fashioned carburettors.

Dodge says the Challenger Super Stock is a concept, but company bosses chuckled quietly when it was suggested this car could be racing by the time the Challenger road car is launched in 2008.

2006 Venturi Eclectic

(from Venturi) Soaring gas prices, economic crises, wars, omnipresent pollution, irreversible changes in the climate… Our world is going through a period when the stakes in terms of energy form the very basis for worldwide chaos. While admitting that no solution for energy production can be perfect, we must become fully aware of the imperative need to limit our own personal consumption of energy.

2006 Venturi Eclectic2006 Venturi Eclectic 22006 Venturi Eclectic 32006 Venturi Eclectic 4 Eclectic, the first autonomous vehicle in the history of the automobile, opens up a new era in the field of mobility : reserved for daily driving in urban areas, its low energy consumption make it the most economical environmental vehicle ever built.

Innovative and astonishing, Eclectic is much more than a simple vehicle ; it is a production and storage plant for renewable energies, either solar or wind based. Charging of these energies, which is intermittent in certain regions, can also be complemented by electrical recharging.

Function dictates the design

Of decidedly original design, this is a vehicle that has no desire to look like other cars which depend on “black gold” : priority has been given to integration of the photovoltaic cells which compose its translucid roof.
Eclectic thus does not pass unnoticed in traffic: its elevated central driving position offers exceptional panoramic vision and considerable space, for both driver and passengers.

Eclectic’s message is loud and clear: this is not an ordinary car, but an avant-garde way of getting around. Owning an Eclectic is also a personal commitment : it means changing one’s way of getting from one place to another by exchanging one’s role as a “consumer” for that of a “producer” and this, in the general interest.

Its designer Sacha Lakic describes Eclectic as : “a modern, autonomous and intelligent automobile. The energy that drives it exists all around it : it simply has to deploy its wind turbine, expose its solar cells or, if necessary, find a simple electric plug. It is usual practice to “stylise” a car. In the case of Eclectic, its contours were born of an approach to design. Its appearance reflects its function. Its silhouette pays homage to certain icon-cars such as the Lunar Rover, Mini-Moke and Mйhari. Though its technology positions it clearly in the present and, above all, the future”.

Technological and environmental advances

Venturi marks a new era in technological history by launching the production of Eclectic, an urban 3-seater electro-solar vehicle which goes well beyond anything offered so far by car manufacturers of today :

1 st vehicle powered by renewable energies ;
1 st solar production vehicle (2.5 m2 of photovoltaic cells) ;
1 st vehicle that can be directly recharged with a personal wind turbine ;

Eclectic is thus the vehicle with the least possible impact on the environment.
Unlike other vehicles which are not used for over 90% of the time, Eclectic takes advantage of moments of immobilisation to store energy in its batteries ; contrary to a petrol tank, this energy reserve remains available for other uses. It’s well worth betting that one day, and at national level, this could comprise a considerable reserve of energy which could compensate for breakdowns in the production of electricity as already seen, for example, in California.

Available with last-generation NiMH (NIV-7) batteries (liquid cooled), Eclectic offers a range up to 50 km at a speed of 50 km/hr (electronically restricted), which suffices largely to cover daily movements in urban areas.

The share of solar recharging is approximately 7 km per day of exposure.
When using electricity, a full recharge requires 5 hrs using a standard connection (16 A).

Finally, as an option, Eclectic can be recharged with one or more wind turbines, fixed either on the roof of the vehicle when it is stationary, or to the ground with a specific mast. In this case, the share of recharging is approximately 15 km per day in windy areas.

Production of 20 pre-series vehicles has commenced. A limited version of 200 vehicles with specific equipment will be launched in June 2007 (colour : white)

Eclectic targets two different markets : that of companies wanting to adopt an environment-conscious stance and that of a very avant-garde public at the top end of the range.
A single-seater utilitarian version will also complement this production.

The vehicle comes with a 2-year guarantee (parts, labour and batteries).
Recycling of batteries is handled by Venturi.

Venturi is a "Carbon Neutral" company.

Lightning bug: Quadzilla Bugracer

If those commuter blues are getting you down, why not inject a serious dose of fun with this little fella?

quadzilla bugracerquadzilla bugracer
This is the Quadzilla BugRacer and it's completely road legal. It also promises to be a hoot thanks to an all-up weight of just 398kg and a 500cc motorcycle engine.

If you don't fancy sitting in a traffic jam, those big chunky tyres mean you can take the more direct cross country route.

You'll have to wait till April 2007 before the BugRacer goes on sale in the UK, but for £6299 on the road it's a damn sight more tempting than the usual small car fare.
