Ford Rolls Out "Game Changer" 2009 Flex
NEW YORK — Ford rolled out the 2009 Flex here on Wednesday and said the full-size crossover is designed to be a "game changer" for the company. The Flex, which is the production version of the 2005 Ford Fairlane concept, goes on sale in summer 2008.
The Flex gets the automaker's all-purpose 3.5-liter V6 engine mated to a six-speed transmission. Technical specs have not yet been released, but Ford said in a statement that "The powertrain is expected to deliver more than 260 horsepower, 245 pound-feet of torque and good fuel economy." All-wheel drive will be an option.
The Flex retains some of the town-and-country feeling of the Fairlane concept, with tweed-like fabric and miniature houndstooth inserts for the base Flex SE's seats. The Fairlane emphasized such suburban activities as picnicking, so it's no surprise that the Flex gets such touches as a refrigerator that can hold seven 12-ounce cans. Other details include a multipanel Vista Roof, capless fueling, a 2,300-song personal jukebox and programmable interior lighting. Safety features include standard front-and-side seat-mounted airbags, three-row side curtain airbags and traction control with roll stability control.
Exterior design cues include a horizontal three-bar grille, an all-black greenhouse and standard 18-inch wheels.
Pricing has not yet been announced.
