Mercedes-Benz Announces Pricing for 2008 C-Class Cars

Mercedes-Benz announced that its 2008 C-Class will be starting under $32,000 and hitting a top price of $37,275 for the C350 Sport Sedan. The new cars arrive in U.S. dealerships on August 7.

Mercedes-Benz 2008 C-Class CarsThe '08 C-Class models are the fourth generation for the lineup. They're bigger than the cars they replace — about 3.9 inches longer and 1.7 inches wider, with a wheelbase that's 1.8 inches longer. New for 2008, the C300 Sport and Luxury versions both can be had with 4MATIC all-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission starting in September.

Among the standard features for the 2008 C-Class are eight-way power front seats, two-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, an LCD display screen and a power sunroof. Another interesting touch is the three-pointed star in the center of the front grille of the C-Class Sport models, which Mercedes calls "AMG-inspired."

The suspension and steering have been revamped for a "noticeably more agile" driving experience, Mercedes says.

The 228-horsepower C300 Sport Sedan is priced starting at $31,975. The C300 Luxury Sedan's price tag is $33,675. The C350 Sport Sedan costs $37,275 — $1,500 less than the 2007 model, which was priced at $38,775. A $775 destination charge is included in all prices.

Volvo Rolls Out "Sports-Inspired" R-design

The official word has come down about Volvo's new R-design lineup, a subject of much speculation recently. Using words like "refined" and "sports-inspired," Volvo said the factory options package — which is largely cosmetic — will be available on the Volvo C30, S40 and V50 in Europe this fall.

volvo s40 r-designvolvo s40 r-design 2volvo s40 r-design 3The R-design package apparently is not intended as a replacement for Volvo's high-performance R-series cars that the company is phasing out of production. Volvo explained that R-design "replaces and enhances" Volvo's current sport trim levels. R-design is available on Sport and SE Sport models and on all engines in the C30, S40 and V50 lineup. The Sport with R-design range starts at the equivalent of about $33,250 for a Volvo C30 1.6 Sport.

R-design includes exterior upgrades such as a satin matte-finish grille, color-coordinated bumpers and lower side moldings, rear or roof spoiler, satin matte-finish side mirrors and five-spoke aluminum wheels in 17- or 18-inch sizes. In the cabin, upgrades include off-black seats with contrasting cream-colored leather, a leather-trimmed steering wheel with R-design logo, aluminum pedals, aluminum center stack and door inlays, and tufted dark sport floor mats.

There are no major suspension modifications or powertrain upgrades. It is uncertain whether R-design will be available in North America.

Cadillac's Future Product Portfolio Hinges on Hybrids

Cadillac is planning to roll out hybrid versions of many of the vehicles in its lineup in the next six years, from the CTS to the BRX CUV, industry supplier sources tell Inside Line.

cadillac escaladecadillac cts 2008cadillac blsOne source close to the Cadillac hybrid strategy tells IL that the move toward offering luxury vehicles with a two-mode hybrid system makes sense for a number of practical and philosophical reasons. First, the hybrid option is expensive and Cadillac buyers can afford it. Also, Cadillac doesn't want to be seen as socially inept next to Japanese competitors like Lexus and is under the gun to roll out hybrid variants in a hurry.

GM currently is working on hybrids for the following engine displacements: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder; 3.6-liter and 3.9-liter V6s; 5.3-liter, 6.0-liter and 6.2-liter V8s.

Sources tell us that Cadillac's first hybrid, a two-mode system that increases hybrid fuel savings by efficiently adjusting to different engine speeds, will be the 2009 Cadillac Escalade. The entry-level CTS will likely get a 3.6-liter V6 hybrid in 2010. The new Cadillac DTS, which is on the books for model-year 2011 as a replacement for the DTS and STS, may get a 5.3-liter hybrid V8 as early as 2012.

Sources say the Cadillac BLS, which moves to the rear-wheel-drive Alpha platform in model-year 2012, is scheduled for a 3.6-liter V6 hybrid in 2013. The Cadillac BRX, a small CUV off the TE platform, will roll out in model-year 2010 and will likely get a 3.6-liter V6 hybrid variant in 2011.

John Howell, Cadillac's product chief, told Bloomberg News on Tuesday that the luxury division is considering hybrid versions of all its models as U.S. gas prices hover near $3 a gallon.

Beijing Military Jeep

When American auto designer Edward Wong set out to create the first new Chinese military Jeep in 35 years, he drew his inspiration from Bruce Lee and the Shaolin monks, Chinese Buddhists associated with the martial arts. Little wonder then, that the new BJ2S is nicknamed "the Warrior."

Beijing Military JeepBeijing Military Jeep 2Beijing Military Jeep 3"I did not want to design another Humvee," Wong told Car Design News. "I want this vehicle to represent China, its people and its cultures."

While the BJ2S is on tap to replace all military Jeeps for the People's Liberation Army starting later this year, civilian versions are set to debut in the future.

The BJ2S is decidedly un-Humvee-ish with lots of Chinese influences. The front fascia is patterned after a mythical Chinese creature called a kylin or qilin that is said to be a good omen. The five slots in the grille stand for the five stars in the Chinese flag, and the three-slot front guard represents the army, air force and navy.

Honda has publicly talked about increased horsepower, improved fuel economy, cylinder deactivation and lower emissions for the V6-powered Accord. The new BMW X5 4.8i M Sport will be available in six colours: Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Carbon Black, Monaco Blue, Space Grey, Titanium Silver. Dark Walnut interior trim is standard on the X5 4.8i M Sport but customers can specify Brushed Aluminium, Dark Bamboo or Light Poplar at no additional cost.

Power for the car comes from a 4,799cc engine fitted with Bi-VANOS and VALVETRONIC variable valve technologies to produce 355hp. The 4.8-litre powerplant still records 22.6mpg on the combined cycle and emissions of 299g/km – both figures that better rival products from Porsche and Audi.

The introduction of a new variant to the X5 range comes as the sales figures reveal that the model is exceeding original expectations. The BMW X5 4.8i M Sport costs Ј53,440 OTR. M Sport will be offered on 3.0d and 3.0si models later in 2007 and further details will be announced nearer the time.

BMW 6-Series

BMW dieselfication of its coupe range goes all the way to the top. Well, all the way to the 6-Series, at least.

BMW 6-SeriesBMW 6-Series 2BMW 6-Series 3The ocularly challenging Six is set to go on sale with BMW's 3.0-litre twin turbo six-cylinder diesel engine and it will be called the 635d.

With 282bhp, the 635d does not disgrace the big coupe, managing 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds and hitting an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

There's a six-speed auto as standard with flappy paddles for a sportier feel, but the 635d will still return 40.9mpg on the combined cycle.

At the same time the diesel engine is introduced, BMW is sneaking in a minor restyle of the Six.

You'll have to pay close attention to spot the larger front air intake, reshaped headlights with LED indicators, and boot lid that now incorporates a high level brake light.

Under the skin, BMW says the petrol 630i's engine is more frugal, while inside there's a simplified iDrive system for all models. Which means that people other than computer programmers and rocket scientists will be able to adjust the aircon temperature.

And every 6-Series now also comes with regenerative braking - à la 1-Series - to save fuel and energy.

No prices yet for the tweaked 6-Series, but expect the 635d to weigh in at more than 50 grand when it reaches the UK.

2009 Hyundai Genesis spy photos

Hyundai has begun testing redesigned prototypes of its future luxury car that are similar in appearance to the Genesis concept car that debuted earlier this year at the 2007 New York Auto Show.

2009 Hyundai Genesis2009 Hyundai Genesis 2The latest prototype's grille is trapezoidal, instead of the former prototype's round-cornered rectangle, and the grille slats are no longer vertical, but horizontal like the original concept.

The new car's headlights are more pointed, and they stretch back along the fenders, again mimicking the shape of the Genesis showcar's lights. The prototype's front bumper has been toned down, with more conventional foglamps integrated with a rounded lower air intake.

Although the sedan's profile hasn't been altered since the first prototype, the latest version shows a shark-fin antenna mounted on the roof. Nine-spoke wheels are nearly identical to those used on the showcar.

Audi Announces Pricing on 2008 RS 4 Cabriolet

Audi said that its highly anticipated 2008 RS 4 Cabriolet will start at $82,675, including a $775 destination charge, when it goes on sale in the United States this fall.

2008 Audi RS 4 CabrioletBut the actual price is still up in the air, since Audi said the gas-guzzler tax "will be determined prior to arrival in U.S. showrooms." The Fuel Economy Web Site said the gas-guzzler tax can range from $1,000 to $7,700, based on the combined mpg rating of a car in question. The federal tax is designed to "discourage the production and purchase of fuel-inefficient vehicles," according to the site.

The tax applies only to cars, not trucks.

The high-performance drop top is powered by a 4.2-liter V8 FSI engine that churns out 420 horsepower at 7,800 rpm and 317 pound-feet of torque at 5,500 rpm. It will only be available with a six-speed manual transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive.

Volvo Treasure Promotion

Volvo thought its contest was a clever but innocent promotion for the XC90.
Tied in with the new Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End film from Disney, the promotion asked contestants from 22 countries to solve a series of online puzzles, culminating in a hunt for a real-life treasure chest buried somewhere at the bottom of the sea.
They didn't figure that the ship burying the chest would find a real treasure — or that the Spanish government would halt the whole enterprise while it was determined whether the treasure rightfully belongs to Spain.

Volvo Treasure PromotionVolvo Treasure Promotion 2Odyssey Marine Exploration, the company dispatched to bury the Volvo prize chest, selected a top-secret burial location off Gibraltar near Spain. While on the trip, however, Odyssey's crew found a fortune in silver coins elsewhere, deep in the Atlantic Ocean, in a 17th-century shipwreck they named the "Black Swan." The Spanish government — not knowing about the Volvo promotion because of Odyssey's agreement to keep it secret — suspected Odyssey of taking the booty from Spanish waters. While the issue is sorted out, the winner of the Volvo competition, Alena Zvereva from Ekaterinberg, Russia, can't get her hands on the keys to a new XC90 and $50,000 in gold coins that are tucked away on the sea floor in Volvo's treasure chest. Volvo promises she'll get the reward, although the trip out to get it from the ocean floor may not take place for a while, if at all.

"We wanted an adventure, and we certainly got one," quipped Volvo Cars of North America National Advertising Manager Linda Gangeri. Volvo's Web site for the promotion is called simply The Hunt.

2007 Alpine Imprint RLS Demo Car based on Mercedes-Benz R500

(from Alpine Electronics) Making Its Mark: The IMPRINT RLS

The birth of the IMPRINT RLS marks the beginning of a new sonic era. While the exterior flaunts a sleek, elegant, one-of-a-kind style, the interior also houses the core Alpine IMPRINT sound technology – making its mark as the absolute show-stopping vehicle for 2007.

2007 Alpine Imprint RLS Demo Car based on Mercedes-Benz R5002007 Alpine Imprint RLS Demo Car based on Mercedes-Benz R500 22007 Alpine Imprint RLS Demo Car based on Mercedes-Benz R500 3The IMPRINT RLS by birthright started off as a Mercedes Benz R500, and was slowly morphed into a car that transcends all laws of space and time. This futuristic concept-like car was brought to life by Alpine’s Advanced Application R&D team, Steve Brown, Gary Bell, Brent Davison with the help of Alpine Canada’s Glen Swackhamer and Rino Odorico.

Breathing life into the RLS required a complete dismantling, relocating, building, and reinforcing experiment. Extreme modifications include gas and brake pedal relocation to allow the car to be driven from either front seat. To continue Alpine tradition of unconventional door and seat combinations, the IMPRINT RLS features a unique rotating assembly allowing suicide doors to swing into the vehicle with the seat attached. In addition to motorized seats, there’s motorization going on in the rear with a custom motorized amp rack. This rack houses 6 PDX amplifiers that power the entire sound system and stealthily rotate out of the back of the SUV.

The body itself took massive hours of fiberglass, duraglas, grinding, primering, sanding, you name it. The end result bodes well for elegance as sleek lines and shadows define intricate details. A custom-mixed Carrizma Candy Cherry Cola paint gives the car a luminous effect, you’d swear the IMPRINT RLS dances depending on how much light shines on it. While the RLS is getting its groove on, you can’t miss its shoes: massive 26” and 30” custom TIS model 01 wheels.

The interior compliments the sophisticated theme with details such as Italian leather, rich Burl Wood inserts. Near the center console, a unique gauge pod with a custom clock and autometer gauges deliver the car’s vital signs. Continuous movement from the clock lets you know the IMPRINT RLS is alive and kicking. But most importantly, the interior was strictly designed to house the best sound possible with IMPRINT sound technology.

While the car itself will turn heads based on looks alone, it’s the sound quality inside that truly demonstrates Alpine IMPRINT sound architecture. The heart and brain of the IMPRINT RLS system unfolds from the Alpine CDA-9887, the new and true IMPRINT sound tuning head unit. The built in processor has over 500 adjustments for frequency and measures and adjusts time correction for you when hooked to the IMPRINT Specialist Tuning Kit. With IMPRINT, special software and microphone help analyze the car’s acoustical problems and automatically tunes the system for optimal sound processing. Not only does this cut down tuning time to less than half an hour, but it also achieves drastically improved sound stage, tonal balance and definition.

The sound system’s supporting cast includes the motorized PDX amplifiers, as mentioned, as well as SPX-17REF component speakers arranged in a D'Appolito configuration, and four SPX-1043D subwoofers to please all listeners. Added options include the Alpine KCA-SC100 which controls a SIRIUS Satellite Radio Sportster 4, and Alpine KCE-422i Full Speed connection for iPod for quick access of Apple Lossless-encoded music for a high-quality digital music experience.

Listeners swallowed inside the IMPRINT RLS can get a good dose of sound reproduction at its finest. Catch the IMPRINT RLS touring nationwide at select events throughout 2007.

Hyundai i30

The Kia cee'd proved that although the Koreans might not know much about naming a car, they're certainly learning how to build one.

Slipstreaming the cee'd into the European market comes another Korean hatch, the Hyundai i30.

Hyundai i30Hyundai i30 2Hyundai i30 3Yes, it sounds like the answer to the question, 'How old are you, Tarzan?', but you'd better get used to it: Hyundai is planning to follow the i30 with an i10, i20, i40 and, yes, you guessed it, i60.

Aimed firmly at the Ford Focus, Renault Megane et al, the i30 promises a leap in quality over previous-generation Hyundais, as well as more Euro-friendly styling.

It looks pleasantly inoffensive, and there's plenty of kit on board, too. Standard spec includes aircon, alloy wheels, ESP and Hyundai's five-year, unlimited mileage warranty. Which is good, but not quite in the same league as the cee'd's seven-year bullet-proof guarantee.

There are three trims to pick from - Comfort, Style and Premium - and 1.4- and 1.6-litre petrol engines, as well as 1.6- and 2.0-litre turbodiesels.

With prices from the friendly side of 11 grand, the i30 could be a tempting little number when it arrives on these shores in September. Could it be better than the cee'd? We'll let you know as soon as we get our hands on one.

Jaguar powered by apples

So we've seen cars powered by burger grease, orange juice, hemp and something called Jatropha Curcas seeds. Nope, still don't know what they are.

But what about rotting apples? In a move as selfless as it is eco-friendly, Somerset farmer Henry Hobson has converted his Jaguar XJ6 to run off methane produced from the decomposing fruit in his orchard.

Jaguar powered by applesThe science is simple enough: Hobson fills two underground tanks with apples from his 10,000-tree orchard, and adds a soupcon of bacteria from cows' intestines (yes, seriously) to help the rotting along.

The gas emitted from the decomposition is filtered through water to remove the sulphur and carbon dioxide, leaving Hobson with lots of lovely pure methane. And lots of lovely cheap fuel.

Hobson reckons that - discounting the £3,000 it cost to convert his Jag - he saves more than two grand every year on fuel costs. And as an added bonus, the big ol' XJ6 is putting out about 10 per cent more power at very similar fuel economy to before.

So is apple-power the future? Hobson maintains that methane is 10 times more efficient to produce than bio-diesel. And, as well as presumably filling the air with the sweet smell of home-brew, his fuel has the advantage of keeping the doctor well away.

Now, if only we could harness all that methane that our cows produce. Volunteers, anyone?

2007 9ff Porsche Turbo TRC 91

(from 9ff Press Release) High pressure in a hurry .

2007 9ff Porsche Turbo TRC 912007 9ff Porsche Turbo TRC 91 22007 9ff Porsche Turbo TRC 91 3What is it? It has 910 hp and 910 Nm, takes only 3.10 seconds from 0 to 100km/h and offers a top speed of 392km/h made possible by the modified double-clutch gearbox that goes with it. In the form of a convertible, with unbelievable 780hp resulting in 381km/h, it holds the absolute world record since October 2006. A supercar polished up Right, it must be a Porsche. But not just an ordinary one, no, it is the new Porsche 911 Turbo TRC 91 created by Nardo God 9ff. The artists from Dortmund turned the already extremely sporty bolide into one of the fastest and most powerful street-legal sports cars around the globe. The supercar‘s 3.6 litre biturbo ‚boxer‘ engine was modified in great detail. Not only two special turbochargers increase the performance, but also the sport air filter, larger injectors, modified cylinder heads and a stainless steel exhaust system with special manifolds as well as high-performance catalysts, and, finally, an extensive increase in engine displacement resulting in 4.0 litres. All modifications are perfectly harmonised by means of the reprogrammed engine control unit.

More air for everything

Thanks to the modified racing front grill, the engine is provided with more air while the brake cooling has been improved by - discrete - additional air intakes. A boot lid made of carbon allows a maximum weight reduction to 1,300 kg. Optimum performance is brought to perfection through revised aerodynamics en-hancing the powerful Porsche‘s driving stability while creating an atmosphere of even more dynamic elegance. The monstrous inner workings, however, do not re-veal themselves that easily to a layperson. The experts at 9ff confined themselves to a slightly lower front apron and elegant 20-inch wheels with a larger braking system. New and shapely front spoilers, side skirts and redesigned rear wings add to the aerodynamic kit while the elegant and aerodynamically enhanced exterior mirrors are the crowning glory of the whole.

To sum it up, the 9ff Turbo TRC 91 was made for those among us who are real gentlemen - it is a decent horsepower werewolf.

2007 Porsche Boxster

(from Porsche Press Release) The 2007 Boxster and Boxster S, aided by more power and torque via new engines fitted with Porsche's VarioCam Plus variable valve timing and lift system, cement the Boxster as the sportscar kingdom's most practical and entertaining value.

2007 Porsche Boxster2007 Porsche Boxster 22007 Porsche Boxster 32007 Porsche Boxster 42007 Porsche Boxster 5The engine in the Boxster S has been enlarged from 3.2 to 3.4 liters, and now develops 295 horsepower at 6250 rpm - 15 horsepower more than its predecessor. Torque has also swelled 15 lb.-ft., to 251 lb.-ft. The Boxster S sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds (0-100 km/h, 5.4 sec.) - a tenth of a second quicker than the previous model. This open sports car's top test-track speed has risen 2 mph to 169 mph (272 km/h). This heady performance comes at little cost to efficiency, as the Boxster S manages a city/hwy fuel-economy rating of 20/28 MPG with the standard six-speed transmission.

The 2.7-liter Boxster engine now develops an additional 5 horsepower, bringing peak output to 245 horsepower. Torque has also increased, from 199 to 201 lb.-ft., peaking 100 rpm earlier with a broad torque plateau from 4600 to 6000 rpm. With the standard 5-speed manual transmission, the '07 Boxster accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds (0-100 km/h, 6.1 sec.), and has a top test-track speed of 160 mph (258 km/h). With the optional six-speed manual gearbox, top test-track speed increases to 162 mph (260 km/h). Fuel economy on the Boxster model is particularly impressive. With the standard 5-speed manual transmission, it achieves a city/hwy rating of 23/32 MPG.

For 2007, the Boxster and Boxster S can be optioned with the revised Tiptronic S transmission, which features new hydraulics and electronics to improve responsiveness, and also provides variable shift programs. Combined with the optional Sport Chrono Package, the sporting characteristics of both these mid-engined roadsters are enhanced. With the Sport mode engaged, up- and downshifts are only made at engine speeds above 3000 rpm, and downshifts for engine braking are subject to less delay and take place at higher engine speeds. In the manual-shift mode, up-shifts are not made automatically when the engine reaches its rev limiter.

Lamborghini Edo Murcielago LP640

Edo Competition has tuned supercars from the Ford GT to the Maserati MC12. Naturally, it couldn't resist the opportunity to apply a little nip-and-tuck to the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640.

Lamborghini Edo Murcielago LP640Lamborghini Edo Murcielago LP640 2Lamborghini Edo Murcielago LP640 3Lamborghini Edo Murcielago LP640 4Speaking of plastic surgery, there's a new rear wing with an adjustable lip, plus a rearview camera and lots of carbon-fiber trim in the cockpit.

Edo elected to forego implants, focusing instead on squeezing a tad more juice from the Lambo's already potent 6.5-liter V12.

With such tweaks as a recalibrated ECU, high-flow air filters and redesigned stainless-steel exhaust system with high-flow mufflers, the Edo LP640 is bumped to 663 horsepower and 498 pound-feet of torque.

Edo estimates 0-60 acceleration in less than 3.8 seconds, with top speed climbing to 216 mph.

2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R

Nissan's 2009 Skyline GT-R made an unexpected appearance at this past weekend's Goodwood Festival of Speed, completing the hill climb in the rain twice on Saturday and twice more on Sunday.

2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R 2Despite its numerous runs, Nissan made no effort to publicize the effort. In fact, the GT-R was conspicuously absent from the event announcer's script. Every other car was formally introduced prior to its ascent, including the Audi R8 that went before the GT-R and the Ford GT that went after. When the GT-R appeared at the starting line, however, the speakers went silent and it took off in silence.

And we mean silence, as the GT-R was virtually inaudible compared to the rest of the field. It was enough to compel spectators to ask each other, "What was that thing?"

When the car returned to the staging area on Sunday, our on-site reporter said that it appeared as though Toshio Suzuki was at the wheel. He was the test driver we spotted running hot laps at Laguna Seca Raceway and Sears Point in February.

2007 Ferrari Dino Concept Design

(from Ugur Sahin) Presenting Ferrari Dino Concept Design;

2007 Ferrari Dino Concept Design2007 Ferrari Dino Concept Design 42007 Ferrari Dino Concept Design 22007 Ferrari Dino Concept Design 3Ferrari Dino Concept design is the modernized version of the successful Ferrari Dino produced by Ferrari.

The goal was to create a car that feels stylish, modern, dynamic and organic while staying true to the original design language of the Ferrari Dino and Ferrari brand in general.

The main characteristic of the Dino Concept design is the way it looks similar to the original Dino. With very round styling elements around the wheelbases and its cockpit, it looks retro and modern at the same time. With the right proportions combined, the car looks very dynamic and stylish. It stays true to its original with the design of the rear and the front being rounded and avoiding the hard edges as much as possible. Also the rear window opening is a striking feature originating from the original Ferrari Dino. The air intakes scoops however are very different compared to the original Dino, they look very organic and visually add a very organic feel to the car.

Swiss Tuner Rinspeed Rolls Out Cocoon-Like "Sensosphere"

When Rinspeed introduced the Senso concept car at the 2005 Geneva Auto Show, it showed off a Zen-like vehicle that exerted a "positive effect" on passengers through the use of patterns, colors, music and aromatherapy. Now the Swiss tuner has taken some of the lessons learned with the Senso and applied them to postmodern aircraft cabins.

RinspeedRinspeed 2Rinspeed on Monday introduced its "Sensosphere" for airplanes, a concept developed in partnership with Strahle & Hess, Lumitec and the University of Zurich. The goal was to move away from "clinical and plastic" aircraft interiors into an elaborate sensory cocoon that puts a premium on mood lighting, fragrances and sound. The Sensosphere uses high-tech, computer-controlled surfaces that shine green, blue or orange. Rinspeed showed off images of the Sensosphere mimicking a sunset or a starry night inside an airplane cabin. Rinspeed said "the material can be made into any shape and does not need electric bulbs or LEDs." Instead, it uses what is described as "an innovative electroluminescent film technology."

"On the basis of the measured data, the passengers now receive various impulses to their senses that put them in a state of relaxed attentiveness," Rinspeed said in a statement.

In the past, Rinspeed has brought out many showstoppers at European auto shows, including such concepts as the zaZen, which featured a rear window that uses lighting technology to become a large holograph. At the 2007 Geneva Auto Show, Rinspeed rolled out the eXasis, a two-seater made of transparent high-tech plastic in collaboration with Bayer Material Science.

new Mitsubishi Lancer

Not long now until we get to see the 'proper' production version of the new Mitsubishi Lancer. And, more importantly, the Evo.

new Mitsubishi Lancernew Mitsubishi Lancer 2Up until now, Mitsubishi has called its saloon a concept, even though we all knew the car we saw at the Geneva show a few months ago was the finished article.

But the Frankfurt show in September is the official D-Day for the new Lancer.

Mitsubishi has confirmed that the Lancer will get 1.5- and 1.8-litre petrol engines and a 2.0-litre turbodiesel, plus another as-yet-unspecified powerplant.

But what we're interested in is the 2.0 turbo motor for the Evo, although Mitsubishi is not letting on just how powerful it will be.

You'll also have the choice of just about every gearbox in existence, with Mitsubishi offering a five- or six-speed manual, two autos or a CVT 'box depending on engine.

After the Frankfurt show, the Lancer goes on sale in the UK in March 2008, followed by a Sportback estate six months later.

2009 Dodge Durango Hybrid

Dodge offered short test-drives of the 2009 Durango Hybrid earlier this week, and provided a few specifications as well. The Durango and Chrysler Aspen will use the same two-mode hybrid system that we experienced earlier this year in the hybrid Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon
2009 Dodge Durango HybridThe system was developed in cooperation with General Motors and BMW. This means it can run on electric motor only (as it does in reverse and for low-speed forward trundling) or it can use the electric motor to augment the big gas motor.

Think of it more like a Prius than a Honda Accord Hybrid, which is a so-called mild hybrid. Chrysler estimates that the Durango Hybrid will get about 40 percent better fuel economy in the city. The average Hemi Durango can't even manage 15 miles on one gallon of fuel around town.

One similarity to Honda's soon-to-be-discontinued Accord Hybrid is that both use cylinder deactivation to improve highway fuel economy. Dodge says that the addition of the electric motors mean that the V8 will run on four cylinders more often than a standard Durango and should account for a 25 percent improvement to the Hemi Durango's 19 mpg highway performance.

Eventually, Chrysler is expected to do a two-mode hybrid powered by one of its upcoming family of V6s. The company's current V6s have no cylinder-deactivation capability

VW Passat

Even with that chrome grill and incongruous V6 in the model line-up, we always knew that the Volkswagen Passat was a bit boring at heart.

And now the big VW has proved its true colours. It's not just boring, it's a caravanner.

The Passat Estate has beaten off stiff competition to be voted Towcar of the Year 2007.

VW PassatApparently the Passat was subjected to a rigorous testing programme before being awarded the title.

Although the details of this test are unclear, we must assume that the 'idling down the outside lane of the A30 at 30mph with a two-mile queue of traffic behind' challenge, the 'how many miles can you cover before realising that you forgot to hitch your caravan onto the towbar back at the trailer park' exam and, of course, the 'most ridiculous wing mirror extensions' shootout all formed part of the curriculum.

On a serious note, we hope - as will anyone who saw the 'Top Gear Goes Camping' episode a couple of series back - that the examiners saw fit to test the fireproof qualities of the Passat. It's a dangerous business, this camping lark.

Bentley Brooklands

Recently staged a coup on the government of a sizeable nation? Need a car to reflect your benevolent-yet-frighteningly-powerful status?

Well, El Presidente, may we recommend the Bentley Brooklands Coupe?

Bentley BrooklandsBentley Brooklands 2Bentley Brooklands 3Bentley Brooklands 4Based on the Arnage chassis, the Brooklands coupe is a luxury four-seater powered by Bentley's most powerful V8 ever.

A modified version of Bentley's 6.75-litre twin-turbo, the hand-built Brooklands engine develops 530bhp at just 4,000rpm and a terrifying 774lb ft of torque at 3,250rpm. That's the highest torque output of any V8. In the world.

All that power is put to the road through a semi-automatic six-speed box, with the Brooklands hitting 60mph in five seconds flat before topping out at 184mph.

As an option, you can also spec the biggest set of brakes of any production car on the road: the 420mm cross-drilled discs off the Conti GT Diamond series.

But make no mistake, the Brooklands is no lithe-and-low supercar. It's massive. See those delicate little five-spoke wheels? They're 20-inchers. Gives you an idea of the sheer size of the thing.

The over-the-top-theme continues in the cabin, with swathes of aluminium and carbon fibres complemented by that lurid, luminous leather - an option that Bentley calls 'Cashew' and we call deeply tasteless.

But at least it'll be exclusive tastelessness: only 550 Brooklands coupes will be built, with prices starting around £220,000, and the first deliveries should arrive in early 2008.

The only problem, El Presidente, is that this year's allocation has already sold out. We're sorry, we're sorry...

BMW M3 spotted

Want to see the new BMW M3?

Well, you'll have to wait until the first week of July, when BMW will formally show off its RS4-rattling supercoupe to us Brits.

new BMW M3 photonew BMW M3 photo 2new BMW M3 photo 3Unless you head down to the Canary Wharf Motor Expo with a good cover story and a nifty line in comedy disguises. See, the M3 isn't technically there: BMW's show car at the posh London party is the M6 Convertible. Boring.

But hidden in a back room, away from the view of the general public, is a pristine white M3. BMW is only showing it to prospective M3 customers or those who have already placed an order. Or persistent journalists, of course.

So, we urge you, head on down to Canary Wharf and badger BMW for a look at the M3. Partly because it'll serve 'em right for hiding it away but also because, technically, we're all prospective M3 buyers.

Maybe not for a few years or without a substantial windfall/bank error in the meantime, but that's the whole point in 'prospective', isn't it?

But you'll need to be quick: the Motor Expo finishes on Sunday. And if BMW won't let you into its secret chamber, there's always the Alfa 8C Competizione to keep you entertained. And the Bentley Brooklands. And the Audi R8.

And who knows what else you'll find hidden in the basement?

2007 Startech Jeep Wrangler

(from Startech Press Release) STARTECH Refines the New Jeep Wrangler

Legends are immortal and in the automotive world that is especially true for the Jeep. Wrangler, the ‘mother’ of all off-road vehicles. To customize the latest version of the American 4x4 and to make it even more exclusive STARTECH (http://www.startech.de/ ) is developing an innovative and exclusive accessories program – for the short wheelbase and the new long wheelbase version.

2007 Jeep Wrangler2007 Jeep Wrangler 2In a first step STARTECH offers custom-tailored light-alloy wheels, some initial exterior modifications and exclusive interior options.

The polished STARTECH Monostar IV 9Jx20 light-alloy wheels attract attention at first sight. The striking five-spoke wheels lend the new Jeep. Wrangler a more exclusive appearance. But that’s not all: Mounted with sporty on- and off-road tires in size 285/50 R 20 front and back they give the SUV even more agile handling characteristics while at the same time improving driving safety.

While the STARTECH design program for the new Wrangler is still under development, the first stainless-steel components will be available shortly. Sturdy tubular side guards for short and long wheelbase models protect the rocker panels of the Jeep and partially hide the Jeep’s frame from view. The spare wheel cover with high-gloss stainless-steel ring adds the finishing touch.

The new Wrangler generation for the first time includes a model with diesel engine. The STARTECH motor engineers are currently developing the STARTECH SD 4T tuning module for the 2.8-liter (171 cu. in.) common-rail turbodiesel engine.

STARTECH sport exhausts will soon be available for all engine and body variants of the Jeep. The fully stainless-steel exhausts feature one characteristic oval chrome tailpipe each on the right and left, and produce a more sonorous engine sound, while at the same time optimizing power yield.

The interior of the Jeep can also be upgraded stylishly with STARTECH accessories: Highly polished scuff plates welcome driver and passengers, and the ergonomically shaped STARTECH sport steering wheel adds to the ambiance.

Additional customization requests can be fulfilled by the company-own STARTECH upholstery shop. Partial and fully leather interiors made from especially soft yet durable Mastik leather satisfy even the most discriminating tastes.

Gumpert Apollo

You know that old chestnut about F1 cars generating enough downforce to be able to drive on the ceiling?

Well, this theory so beguiled former Audi engineer Roland Gumpert that he used it as the guiding principle on which to build his supercar.

Gumpert ApolloGumpert Apollo 2Gumpert Apollo 3Gumpert Apollo 4This is the daftly named Gumpert Apollo, the latest car to come knocking on the door of the exclusive supercar club.

A road-legal racer, the Apollo is designed with downforce in mind. Weighing in at just 1,100kg thanks to a carbon-fibre monocoque, the Apollo generates 1,500kg of downforce at 200mph - theoretically enabling it to drive upside down. We're not volunteering to test that theory though.

The speed comes from a twin-turbo version of the Audi RS4's 4.2-litre V8, producing 650bhp and 627lb ft of torque.

That's good for a top speed of 224mph, which would presumably be even higher if it wasn't for all the downforce.

There's more evidence of Audi's influence - though the German company didn't play a direct role in the Apollo's development, it does have subsequent patents on the car's development - in the gearbox: a six-speed sequential dual-clutch unit.

And although the cabin may look barer than a Page 3 model, Gumpert has found room for such creature comforts as satnav, air conditioning and a rear-mounted reversing camera.

Gumpert says the Apollo is production-ready, with starting prices in the region of £190,000. The only problem is that Tom Ford drove a pre-production Apollo almost two years ago, at which point Gumpert said the first models would be on the road by the end of 2005.

But although there are reports of a few Apollos knocking around Monaco and the like, we've still not been invited to drive one. It's enough to drive you up the wall... and onto the ceiling.

2005 Chrysler Akino Concept Vehicle

(from Chrysler Press Release) Chrysler Akino Concept Redefines Luxury and Spaciousness

The unique and artistically sculptured appearance of the Chrysler Akino concept vehicle and its one-box, compact size certainly turns heads. However, after the fifth person settles comfortably into the vehicle, one clearly gets the idea there is more to this concept than meets the eye.

2005 Chrysler Akino Concept Vehicle2005 Chrysler Akino Concept Vehicle 22005 Chrysler Akino Concept Vehicle 32005 Chrysler Akino Concept Vehicle 42005 Chrysler Akino Concept Vehicle 5"Our job as designers is to push the boundaries of conventional thinking, said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Design, Chrysler Group. "On this project we imagined a new small super-efficient powertrain that allows freedom for the designer to create a new solution for future transportation."

Design
The vehicle name comes from Interior and Exterior Designer, Akino Tsuchiya, a 37-year-old who was born in Japan and is based at the Chrysler Group's Pacifica Design Studios in Carlsbad, California. The meaning of the name Akino is "autumn field." The feeling of serenity that is evoked with these words is a theme present throughout the vehicles design.

"I wanted the soothing, comforting feeling of a living room on the interior all surrounded by an elegant form that reflects the Chrysler brand," Tsuchiya said of her concept vehicle revealed at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show. "We very much wanted a feeling of being at home on the road." Tsuchiya added that for those in Japan, driving on a weekend or free time is an experience of being together such as through family outings or traveling with friends.

Oasis
The Chrysler Akino concept has a single door on the driver side, and two doors on the passenger side that open in opposite directions. This arrangement allows the interior to have a booth-like rear seat with a swiveling passenger seat. The roof features an unusual interlocking form toward the rear which punctuates the design and provides more headroom for the rear seat passengers.

"In the Chrysler Group, we take pride in employing the best designers in the industry," said Joe Eberhardt, Executive Vice President Global Sales Marketing and Service. "The fresh thinking and diversity in our design team enables us to develop vehicles that answer the specific demands of the varied world markets in which we operate. While the Chrysler Akino may be a concept at this stage, it shows how we can meet the rational needs of customers in our international markets, while infusing the product with all the emotion of the Chrysler brand," he said.

According to Tsuchiya, the unique seating configuration provides an oasis which is designed for a safe, comfortable and social environment to experience travel on an entirely new level.

Nature
The selection of materials and colors used in the interior are composed of natural and recyclable synthetic fabrics: bamboo flooring, a throw rug, lighting sconce, mood lighting and even throw pillows.

The driver and passenger front seats are treated like arm chairs and the rear seat like that of a sofa in a traditional living room setting. Color is used to separate the working space from the living room area also – a Salon Blue Suede in the driver and cockpit area with a Cream Suede on the passenger and rear seat surfaces with a similarly colored lower door trim.

Function
The exterior features a side glass that has an unusual graphic breakup while the rear glass is specially coated with texture to give passengers a sense of privacy and comfort.

"We wanted an artful, sculptural and graceful form that was influenced by artwork and architecture," Tsuchiya said. "Refinement is at the heart of the Chrysler brand. The combination of those brand attributes and artistic grace helped us to bring much of the home into the automobile."

Celebrity Era Ends at Buick as Tiger Is Reassigned to OnStar

Saying that it no longer wants "a celebrity at the core of any brand," General Motors on Thursday said golf great Tiger Woods would now be used as a pitchman in companywide ads for products like OnStar instead of serving as the face of Buick.

Mark R. LaNeve, GM's vice president of North American sales, service and marketing, said the automaker will continue to use Woods in corporate-level marketing. "Tiger's a great asset," LaNeve said. "We can use him in lots of ways. Why shouldn't we use him in ways other than Buick?"

Woods, 31, has been a prominent part of Buick advertising since 1999. He reportedly has a five-year contract with the automaker worth $40 million that runs through 2009. But there has been widespread media criticism that the Woods/Buick association lacked credibility, especially since most Buick buyers are well into their 60s.

LaNeve said the new Buick strategy would be to sell the cars based on their own merits, not on their ties to celebrities such as Woods.

In addition to taking delivery of a new Buick Enclave CXL recently, Woods also drives a Buick Lucerne and several other GM vehicles.

Ferrari 612 Sessanta

At the climactic ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of Ferrari, company President Luca di Montezemolo rolled out a special piece of hardware: the limited-edition 612 Scaglietti Sessanta.

Ferrari 612 SessantaFerrari 612 Sessanta 2The Sessanta (Italian for "60") is being produced in a modest run of 60 cars, each carrying one of 60 symbols that represent significant moments in Ferrari history.

In observing the 1947 founding of the fabled marque, di Montezemolo said, "We celebrate 60 years of work, extraordinary moments, joyful moments and less joyful ones. ...We have always tried to look ahead, but without ever losing sight of Enzo Ferrari's heritage. We are selling dreams, full of technology and innovation, which are also the fruit of craftsmanship, with the special capacity to transmit emotion and passion."

The car itself is something special: Based on the 612 Scaglietti, the Sessanta borrows such innovations as the three-position electrochromic roof from the Superamerica as well as such luxury amenities as a full leather cockpit by Frau. It will be offered in only two colors: Grigio Scuro (dark gray) and Rubino Micalizzato.

All cars will come with Ferrari's F1 gearbox, unique 19-inch forged-aluminum wheels and black-chrome exhaust pipes, as well as Sessanta anniversary badging on the flanks. The steering wheel features an engine start/stop button, and the gauge cluster is unique to the car. Even the trunk is upholstered in leather.

Additional goodies include a Bose media system, a rear parking camera and a TV tuner (presumably for watching reruns of The Sopranos).

Rolls-Royce

Not content with taking over British football teams, the Russian millionaires are out to snag our finest cars, too.

Rolls-Royce has just opened a shiny new showroom in St Petersburg to cater to all the newly made Russian millionaires with roubles burning holes in their pockets.

"There are lots of entrepreneurs in Russia who've made their fortunes under the new regime, and they like to celebrate their success by enjoying the best things in life," said Graham Biggs of Rolls-Royce.

A blatant plug, yes, but having recently driven the Rolls Drophead Coupe we're in no position to argue.

However, with Rolls producing its car masterpieces (carsterpieces? No?) in such small scale, are we Brits - well, those with 300-odd grand to spare - going to miss out?

"Plenty of Russians have already put in an order for the Drophead," said Biggs. "But the number of cars we're expecting to sell from St Petersburg is only in the tens each year."

And if it wasn't enough that some Russian oligarch might gazump you on your Roller, beware the Chinese too.

Biggs reckons demand for Rolls-Royces in China is second only to the US, with the company opening showrooms in the People's Republic about as quickly as, well, they build cars.

So if you're in the market for a new Roller, good luck to you. It might be easier to buy yourself a football team.

Pagani Zonda

If you're in the market for a Pagani Zonda F, you'd better be quick because the last few are up for grabs.

The final five Zonda F Roadsters have still to find homes, but after that it's all over for road-going Zondas... for now at least.

Pagani ZondaMemorable for so many reasons - not least for scaring the Hamster witless on twisty French country lanes - the Zonda is one of the few supercar dreams to have made it into reality.

And not a bad reality either, thanks to that Mercedes-sourced 7.3-litre V12 and styling that looks like it fell from Mars.

Still, it's not all bad news because Pagani is planning a Zonda F track car, although you'll need the thick end of £500,000 to put one in your garage.

Pagani is playing close to its chest with details, but expect more than 700bhp, a stripped-out cabin and a 220mph top speed when the car goes on sale in 2008. Oh, and a seriously limited production run.

There's also word on a fresh road-going Pagani arriving in 2008. It won't be another Zonda, and it might just get an eight-litre V12. More details when we get them...

2008 Ford Shelby GT Convertible

(from Ford Motor Company Press Release) FORD SHELBY GT DROPS ITS TOP FOR 2008 MODEL YEAR

2008 Ford Shelby GT Convertible2008 Ford Shelby GT Convertible 22008 Ford Shelby GT Convertible 3New convertible version of the Ford Shelby GT available beginning this summer
* New signature Vista Blue exterior with Shelby GT Silver stripes
* Production of 2008 Shelby GT aimed at 2,300 to assure exclusivity for collectors
* Ford Mustang is America’s top-selling convertible

DEARBORN, Mich., June 13, 2007 – The magic duo of Ford Mustang and Carroll Shelby bring open-air excitement to the road for the 2008 model year as the Ford Shelby GT returns with a new convertible body style and a new standard color combination. Like all Shelby Mustang models, production will be limited to assure exclusivity for collectors. The 2008 Shelby GT will be available in coupe and convertible from select Ford dealers beginning in August 2007.

The 2008 Ford Shelby GT convertible will be formally introduced to Shelby and Ford enthusiasts at the Mid-America Ford Performance and Shelby Meet, which opens today in Tulsa, Okla.

“The Shelby GT was engineered for people that put performance first,” said Carroll Shelby. “Working with Ford Racing, we created this Shelby to be an everyday driver that’s tuned for fun at the track. Those who value a well-balanced package will appreciate it. Those who don’t will be left behind staring at its tailpipes.”

In 2007, Ford Division, Carroll Shelby and Ford Racing joined forces to create a retail version of The Hertz Corporation Shelby GT-H coupe called the Shelby GT. Fewer than 6,000 total 2007 Shelby GTs were built and were only available in Performance White or Black.

For 2008, the highly-coveted Shelby GT is available in a new paint combination of Vista Blue with Silver stripes and the choice of two body styles, coupe or convertible.

“The Mustang convertible is the number one selling convertible in the U.S.,” states Robert Parker, Ford Division Car Marketing Manager. “Since t he Mustang program never stands still, we wanted to continue offering consumers what they want, and they told us it was a Ford Mustang Shelby GT convertible. ”

Shelby GT models begin life as a specially-equipped Mustang GT assembled at the AutoAlliance International assembly plant in Flat Rock, Mich. The cars are then shipped to the Shelby Automobiles facility in Las Vegas for transformation before delivery to Ford dealerships nationwide.

“The birth of the Ford Shelby GT was so well received last year, especially by young enthusiasts, that we brought the car back for the 2008 model year,” said Amy Boylan, President of Shelby Automobiles. “The enormous response to the Shelby GT-H convertible convinced us to offer a drop top Shelby GT. And we had so many requests for blue that we decided to make it our signature color in 2008.”

Every Shelby GT is built to perform and is the result of extensive development. Aerodynamics were key to sculpting the powerful, unique front fascia with aggressive lower air dam. The hood scoop comes directly from the famed Shelby Cobra roadster while unique side scoops are positioned just before the rear wheel arches. The rear fascia frames dual exhaust tips and a Shelby badge is on the trunk lid.

“The partnership between Ford Racing and Shelby demonstrates our ability to work together to deliver some of the most exciting Mustang’s ever built,” said Jamie Allison, manager of the Ford Racing Performance Group. “Ford Racing has a full line of performance parts for Mustang enthusiasts. The Shelby GT convertible is another example of how working together, Shelby and Ford Racing are developing, producing and delivering niche performance Mustangs directly to the customer.”

Under the hood, the engine is upgraded with a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Package to increase output of the 4.6-liter V-8 to 319 horsepower and 330 lb.-ft. of torque. A high-flow exhaust system with X-pipe crossover offers better power delivery and a throaty V-8 exhaust note. Shelby GT comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission featuring a Hurst short-throw shifter for precise shift action. A five-speed automatic transmission is optional.

The balanced package includes a Ford Racing Handling Pack with special-tuned dampers, unique sway bars and a 3.55:1 ratio rear axle assembly for improved off-the-line acceleration. The overall ride height was dropped to reduce body roll while a front strut-tower brace adds additional strength to the chassis structure.

The 2008 models will sport 18-inch polished wheels with high-performance P235/50ZR18 BF Goodrich gForce tires to maximize the upgrades. Like all Mustang convertibles, each drop top will have supplemental bracing to give the car additional stiffness and the Shelby team will add a stylish light bar.

“The Shelby GT is for drivers,” says Boylan. “We enhanced the motor, the chassis and other bits to make it a fun, balanced car that is equally at home on the street or track. It’s easy to drive, very fast and offers great value for the price.”

Approximately 2,300 2008 Shelby GT coupes and convertibles will be built, available with manual or automatic transmission. Each car will feature an authentication plate on the center dashboard, as well as a matching tag under the hood for documentation in a forthcoming registry. Shelby Automobiles production is scheduled to begin in August 2007.

2004 Holden Torana TT36 Hatch Concept

(from General Motors Press Release) Holden drew on General Motors’ global resources to build the hot pink Torana TT36, which is powered by an experimental 280kW twin turbo 3.6 litre Alloytec V6 engine, sports a glass roof and showcases bold directional design themes.

Holden Torana TT36 Hatch ConceptHolden Torana TT36 Hatch Concept 2Holden Torana TT36 Hatch Concept 3Holden Torana TT36 Hatch Concept 4Holden Torana TT36 Hatch Concept 5Not for production, this mid-sized hatch concept demonstrates the strength and versatility of Holden’s design talent to a worldwide audience and emphasises its ability to react swiftly to changing customer demand.

Torana TT36 highlights Holden’s rear wheel drive powertrain engineering expertise and the practical benefits to be gained by sharing GM global suspension and chassis components and modular structural systems.

The new millennium hot hatch pays homage to Holden’s Bathurst-winning icon car of the seventies, the Torana A9X. It is 25 years since the revered V8-powered Torana A9X last conquered Mount Panorama and wrote itself into Australian automotive legend.

Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Denny Mooney, today said he believed the Torana’s spiritual successor showed how times continued to change in the automotive industry.

“Torana TT36 represents a revolution in concept car design at Holden. We’ve unveiled several examples of our design flexibility and build capability in recent years, but this car is exceptional for yet another reason,” Mr Mooney said.

“All recent showcars have been based on our Commodore V-car platform. Torana TT36, on the other hand, shares many basic structural elements with the latest GM sports concepts and much of its chassis componentry is sourced directly from GM.

“It is the first Holden showcar to merge Australian design and engineering expertise with GM technical resources. Quite simply, for us it is a ‘game changer’ in automotive design and production.

“Naming the concept car was easy. We knew many fans would immediately call it Torana because it is a high powered, mid-size, rear wheel drive hot hatch. The TT36 stands for Twin Turbo 3.6.”

The twenty-first century Torana has slingshot performance potential. Its experimental 3.6 litre twin turbo Alloytec V6, hand-built at Holden’s new Port Melbourne engine plant, produces 280kW of power, transferred to the tarmac via a heavy-duty six speed manual transmission.

Ninety per cent of the 480Nm of torque developed is available from just 1600 rpm and the TT36 shares the power-to-weight advantage that helped its A9X sporting predecessor to drive into the record books at Mt Panorama a quarter of a century ago.

The four-seater showcar is finished in luminous, look-at-me pink − dubbed ‘ManGenta’ by the trend-spotting stylists who created it − contrasted against a slick new-tech interior in minimalist black and white. A panoramic glass roof extends from the steeply raked windscreen all the way back to the hatch and the TT36 sits on 20-inch, ten-spoke alloys.

The project was originally named XP54, reflecting the acronym ‘eXperimental Project’ and coded 54 in recognition of Holden’s so-called Studio 54 design workshop in the outer suburbs of Melbourne .

Holden Design Director, Tony Stolfo, said the showcar’s aggressive, sports-oriented frontal treatment recalled its hard-charging Torana heritage while speaking the design language of the here and now.

“It’s very performance-driven in terms of the size of the apertures, the air intakes and grille.

The fenders and quarter panels are pumped to accentuate width and stance,” he said.

“It also displays some of the key proportions we’ll see in future cars generally: front wheels forward, minimal overhang, high belt lines and a high deck. All these elements create strength and purpose and deliver expressive contemporary styling.

“The hatch style gives us a very fast line running over the top, and we’ve given it strong directional lines. In terms of overall design intent, it’s far more sophisticated sports machine than street machine.

“And because it’s a vehicle which delivers a really large interior compartment in relation to its exterior size, it shows off our packaging skills, which are a traditional Holden strength.”

The Torana TT36 interior is an exercise in black and white contemporary cool, described by Holden’s young colour and trim team as ‘nu luxury’. Taking inspiration from forecast fashion trends in domestic and industrial design, they gave it smoothly sculptured white leather seats and mirror-gloss finishes in piano black and pearlescent perspex, contrasted with soft-feel textures and black techno-mesh rubber floor covering.

The pink exterior theme is picked up in clever LED lighting effects and a ‘retro future’ 3D instrument layout that can be customised to the driver’s taste. Open the door and a full- length lighting strip integrated into the glass roof radiates a healthy pink glow. Press the backlit central starter button to play twin turbo engine idle music. Touch the interactive infotainment screen to control myriad functions – phone, CD, SatNav, DVD, address book and other Blue Tooth-compatible features.

“The Torana TT36 may be simply for show – but it’s not about outrageous technology. We consider that something very close to this concept could be practically achievable in the not-too-distant future,” Mr Stolfo said.

“It’s a first step towards monitoring public reaction to a type of rear-wheel drive vehicle that doesn’t exist in today’s General Motors portfolio. It could be designed and produced off a number of GM platforms, taking advantage of the virtual maths-based processes and component sharing which enabled us to build this working concept in a very short space of time.“

Saab 9-3

At first glance, it looks like a straightforward mid-life facial tweak for the Saab 9-3, but under the skin, the Swede has had some serious re-engineering.

Prime among the revised 9-3's new technology roster is four-wheel drive or, in Saab-speak, 'cross wheel drive'.

Saab 9-3Saab 9-3 2Saab 9-3 3The 'cross' part of the name comes from the rear axle's ability to divide power between the rear wheels to behave like a limited slip differential and optimise grip.

The four-wheel-drive system can also divvy up power between the front and rear axles, sending up to 100 per cent thrust to one end or the other if necessary.

The pre-facelift 9-3's engine range remains, but is now joined by the twin-turbocharged 1.9-litre TTiD diesel with 180bhp and 295lb ft of torque to trouble that new 4x4 system.

No performance figures yet for this new diesel, but Saab says it offers the same in-gear acceleration as the turbocharged 2.8 V6 petrol (read blog), but hopefully without the wallet-clenching trips to the pumps. Which makes it fast and frugal.

Prices for the new Saab 9-3 start at £18,575 when it goes on sale in September.

The twin-turbodiesel TTiD will come in sporty Aero trim only and costs from £26,495. It is also available in the SportWagon estate and Convertible models.

MORE ABOUT ELECTRIC LIGHTNING TECHNOLOGY

NanoSafe™ from Altairnano Inc.
Until now, battery technology has hindered electric vehicle innovation. In 2000, US company Altairnano Inc. established a research programme to create an ultra safe, high power battery using cutting-edge Nanotechnology. The result of their hard work is the NanoSafe™ battery.

SAFER - NanoSafe™ batteries use nano titanate materials instead of graphite which makes them far more thermally stable - there are no toxics or heavy metals used in NanoSafe™ batteries.

LONGER-LASTING - NanoSafe™ batteries have a life expectancy of 12+ years, versus the 3-5 year life of other batteries. NanoSafe™ can retain up to 85% charge capacity after 15,000 charges.

FASTER CHARGE - NanoSafe™ batteries can be recharged in approximately 10 minutes, rather than the hours required by many other rechargeable batteries.

MORE POWERFUL - With instantaneous power even at extreme temperatures, NanoSafe™ batteries deliver power per unit weight and unit volume several times that of conventional Lithium-Ion batteries.

Hi-Pa Drive™ from PML Flightlink Ltd
Hi-Pa Drive™ is a real revolution in motor technology and it’s a British innovation to boot! With its integrated motor and drive electronics in one single unit it produces an ultra high power density - up to 20 times more than conventional systems.

The compact, energy-efficient, electric wheel motors produce unrivalled levels of torque with internal heavy-duty tapered roller bearings that can withstand heavy radial loads for robust use. Yet they achieve the power to weight ratio important for the performance sports car capability of the Lightning
Other features include total weather proofing, total energy transfer and several levels of redundancy, so any single failure will not prevent the vehicle from operating safely.

Carbon fibre/Kevlar® composite technology in association with Amber Composites and Technical Resin Bonders
The Lightning bodywork will incorporate aluminium honeycomb crushable impact cells. This composite monocoque structure uses the same technology that is used in Formula 1 motor racing to protect the driver. This material will be used in the front, rear and sides of the car s well as around the battery area

Regenerative braking
Upon braking, the car's kinetic energy is converted to heat through friction - throwing away the energy that was previously used to accelerate. In city driving, about 30 percent of a typical car's engine output is lost to braking.

When an electric vehicle is decelerating, it does not create friction and useless heat in order to slow down. Instead it reverses its electric motor turning it into an electric generator, creating electricity which is fed back into the battery and stored for future use. In fact any time an electric vehicle decelerates it causes the system to use the vehicle's momentum to generate electricity.

Honda Accord

Honda's new 2.2 i-CDTi SE sounds like great value; it comes stuffed with plenty of equipment and fine 2.2 turbodiesel engine - designed by the same bloke who invented the legendary VTEC system.

Honda AccordHonda Accord 2The price? A bargain bucket £18,600 which, when you compare spec-for-spec, stacks up mightily well against established rivals like Ford's Mondeo and the Renault Laguna.

There's just one problem. Honda is referring to it in is literature as the 'Price Fighter' specification, which is about as sexy as calling it the 'Happy Shopper Exclusive Edition'. No, Honda. No.

Still, if you're put off by the daft name, there's also the new Sport GT model. It also uses the 2.2 turbodiesel, but looks a bit sportier thanks to 17in alloys, dark chrome grille and door handles, boot spoiler, carbon-effect interior inserts, and the option of racy White Pearl paint.

Better than that, you won't have to hang your head when you tell people about it down the pub.

You can buy the Sport GT from September 1 for £20,767.

2007 Matech Racing Ford GT

(from Matech Press Release) Highly promising start for the Ford GT Matech Racing !

Having just arrived this Wednesday at the Adria International Raceway in order to take part in another equivalency test in view of the FIA-GT3 championship, the Matech Racing team have already scored their first victory. They completed an incredible race against time in order to bring this project to fruition, namely to bring a Ford GT up to race norms, in a serious test session with a highly successful machine ….

2007 Matech Racing Ford GT2007 Matech Racing Ford GT 22007 Matech Racing Ford GT 32007 Matech Racing Ford GT 42007 Matech Racing Ford GT 5Better than a regulation, it is a technical philosophy that the teams appointed by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile and SRO Motorsport Group have to apply to ensure the development and the manufacture of cars retained for the FIA-GT3 Championship. A championship that experienced an enormous success as from the first year it came into being, enough to be at the root of numerous projects.

Amongst which Matech Racing, a Swiss structure who put it into their head to bring a myth back to life, namely the Ford GT40 ! In just a few months, the team run by Christian Schumacher, with workshops located within a stone’s throw of the Nьrburgring in Germany, managed to convert the Ford GT into a race car. And after several test runs on the world renowned Eifel circuit, the Matech team headed off for Adria, for a first official run, and especially to take part in this now reputable equivalency test handled byChristophe Bouchut in person.

And the least one can say is that the Ford GT did not go unnoticed. Not only did this beauty prove itself to be fast, clocking up the best lap time of the day, but its overall preparation dumbfounded more than one, starting with Christophe Bouchut himself ! “Notwithstanding its young age, this Ford GT really impressed me «, the official FIA-GT3 driver commented.” Right from the word go she was really easy to handle, and especially fast. I reckon this car has an enormous potential. Believe me they’ll be talking about this car in this type of race. We now need to see how it compares with the references in the category, but Matech Racing really carried out come great work …»

Apart from the lap times clocked by the Ford GT, it is also the practical side of the car that took Bouchut aback. «We know that she has great looks, and the effect she has on people is guaranteed. Once at the wheel I thought it would take quite a few minutes for the mechanics to fix and adjust the various elements, such as the windscreen, the dashboard, and the pedals; without forgetting the various bodywork components. Well in fact quite the contrary! In just a couple of seconds, everything was OK, and I was out on the track. In fact in an endurance race situation, such accessibility allows the mechanics to work quickly which is an undeniable advantage. Everything has been well thought out, offering maximum efficiency …»

A perfect christening for the Matech Racing Ford GT, which will be back on track in Dijon next Tuesday and Wednesday for a further series of tests. And we are leaving the final word to Christophe Bouchut. «In my career as a driver I have come across lots of cars. Well I can tell you one thing; this Ford GT has loads of spirit... truly impressive!”

A first victory for the Matech Racing Ford GT!

For the second meeting of the 2007 FIA-GT3 European Championship the port of call was the street circuit of Bucharest, some 3,111 km in length around the buildings of the Rumanian parliament. A new experience for these GT monsters; some of them unfortunately making an early acquaintance with the concrete safety walls. In these unusual conditions the Matech Racing Ford GTs proved their extreme competitiveness by clinching their first victory this Sunday!

The Matech Racing team took on this city rendezvous in a highly methodical manner. There was no question of going out to titillate those walls during the free practice sessions but rather to concentrate on a perfect set-up for the race. Notwithstanding the fact that the two cars, driven by Thomas Mutsch and Martin Bartek on the one hand (#43), Romain Bera and Stefan van Campenhoudt on the other (#44), took the start in 12th and 30th place respectively, this first race being dotted with numerous incidents and not forgetting the arrival of rain, these Ford GTs made an impressive come back up through the pack … "The #43 was the first car to call at the pits to take on grooved tyres, team manager Christian Schumacher told us, which gave us quite an advantage. Thomas went out determined to do battle, just behind Stйphane Daoudi, whose Ferrari was still shod with slicks. A major crash between two Aston Martins then occurred, and the race was neutralised right through to the finish. Outcome: Obviously the Ferrari never swapped tyres – she came in during the following lap – and even though strategically we held the advantage she came out on top. Having said that, a 2nd place as from the car’s 3rd race is pretty brilliant!" The only small regret, an administrative imbroglio prevented Mutsch and Bartek from getting on to the podium, before Stйphane Ratel personally admitted that the race marshals had made a mistake. Placed within the top 5 at the time of the first neutralisation, car #44 came in one lap later than the #43, namely at the same time as the major number of competitors in the pack, and with all the problems that could cause. As such Bera and van Campenhoudt finished the race in 13th place.

After this excellent start to the weekend hopes were high for the following morning’s race, especially as Thomas Mutsch was in second spot on the grid. The German driver was in top form and promptly took the lead. As soon as the rain appeared the Ford GT #43 came into the pitlane a first time to take on grooved tyres. A few laps later Thomas was back to hand over the wheel to Martin who promptly took the rap of ….a Stop & Go for having carried out a driver change outside of the pit-stop framework ! "Christian promptly went off to see the Clerk of the Course, Martin Bartek told us, but in the time allocate was unable to explain to them that in fact the driver change had taken place during the second pitstop and not the first one as erroneously indicated on the monitors. So in fact I inherited a Stop & Go, and talking about a Stop & Go, this was a complete stop which lasted a full minute. Absolute hell!" And Martin Bartek set off hell for leather, completing a brilliant come back from 16th to 8th place at the finish.

Luckily for the Matech Racing team, car #44 with van Campenhoudt and Bera had a quieter time on the track, thanks also to some well orchestrated strategy. Having found himself in the lead under the rain, after a prompt visit to the pitlane, the Frenchman had a flat in the last few laps….but still managed to control the Ford GT and take the chequered flag as overall winner, some 5 seconds ahead of a Porsche! "What a week-end!” Christian concluded. "Not only has the Ford won a race after only its 4th outing in the FIA-GT3 European Championship, but our two cars finished the meeting in one piece, which wasn’t the case for some of the others. The Ford GT’s chassis is pretty good, and whereas the engine output is under that of the Dodges and Corvettes we have no cause to envy the Ferraris or other Astons .Many thanks to the entire Matech team. Champagne for all!"

2007 Caparo T1 Final Testing

(from Caparo Vehicle Technologies Press Release) Caparo T1 breaks cover during final stages of test and development

Caparo Vehicle Technologies a new and advanced automotive engineering consultancy formed a year ago by the rapidly expanding Caparo Group to provide carmakers globally with a centre of excellence in lightweight vehicle design is putting the finishing touches to the first car it has ever produced.

2007 Caparo T12007 Caparo T1 2The Caparo T1 is a high performance two-seater sports car with highly resolved aerodynamics, which has been designed with the looks and performance close to that of a Formula One race car. With series production about to commence, the car will be built for discerning customers seeking the ultimate track day experience in a road driveable vehicle. The Caparo T1 also serves as a technology flagship for demonstrating the companys high level vehicle design and engineering capabilities.

We said a year ago, at the outset of this programme, that the only way to truly convince carmakers that we have the experience and skills to design a safe, reliable, cost-efficient and high-performance car is to actually design and build one, says Ben Scott-Geddes, the cars co-designer and operations director at Caparo Vehicle Technologies. We've now done so were proud of what we've achieved and we now have something real and tangible to discuss.

Releasing full details of the cars specification during the final stages of prototype testing and development, the company has revealed that while customer cars are being readied for start of production, preparations are also well in hand for the T1s first public appearance as a running car and star attraction at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 22-24 June 2007 which effectively becomes the vehicles launch date.

With distributors appointed in the UK, USA, South Africa and Dubai and more dealers under evaluation the company has a fast-filling order book. The handover of the car to the first customer is scheduled for July.

The biggest attraction for customers and the most striking aspect of the cars specification is its headline figure of 1,045bhp-per-tonne power-to-weight ratio. The Caparo T1 is the first series production car ever to break through the 1,000bhp-per-tonne barrier. This has been achieved by installing a home-grown 3.5-litre Caparo V8 engine, which produces 575bhp (425kW) at 10,500rpm and 420Nm (310lbft) at 9,000rpm, into an extremely lightweight body and chassis constructed of advanced composite materials and weighing just 550kg.

The Caparo T1 is around one-third the mass of the average family saloon. Its carbon/aluminium honeycomb monocoque features a separate composite crash structure at the front, while the rear sub-frame specifies aerospace grade steel. The non carbon-fibre steel suspension illustrates the companys ability to specify structural materials that can deliver the maximum performance at the lowest possible cost.

This means the Caparo T1 is lighter and faster even than a race-winning Le Mans sportscar. In terms of power-to-weight ratio its closest rival would be the latest super-bikes, which are now capable of delivering 175bhp into 185kg thereby just falling short of the magic 1,000bhp-per-tonne figure. Apart from these two wheelers and Formula One cars, no other road or track car comes anywhere close to the Caparo T1s power-to-weight ratio and highly efficient aerodynamic properties.

This supreme power-to-weight ratio results in a 0-60mph time of less than 2.5 seconds and the ability to reach 100mph within five seconds. Braking performance is no less impressive with 100mph to standstill being delivered in 3.5 seconds.

Were absolutely delighted with the progress weve made throughout the test and development programme, says engineering director and T1 co-designer Graham Halstead. The aerodynamic efficiency was already well established through wind tunnel testing of a scale model even before we built the first prototype. With tens of thousands of miles of durability trials and specific testing now under our belts we have progressively fine tuned the specification of the vehicle to meet and exceed even our high performance objectives.

The combination of highly resolved aerodynamics and chassis make the vehicle predictably safe and responsive to driver inputs, adds Scott-Geddes. The car drives and handles extremely well both on the road and track and this was the number one consideration in such an uncompromised high performance vehicle.

The Caparo T1 not only looks and performs like a Formula One car but it also helps us to demonstrate new and advanced technology to vehicle manufacturers in the aerospace, automotive, defence, marine and motorsport industries, says Richard Butler director Caparo Vehicle Technologies and chief executive of Caparo Vehicle Products. Already, were working on a number of highly confidential client projects, applying the same approach to aerodynamics, choice of materials and efficient vehicle design, which has allowed us to develop the T1.

Ultimately, our goal is to help carmakers to create a new generation of more fuel-efficient and lightweight family cars with significantly lower CO 2 emissions more in keeping with the needs of the 21 st century, says Angad Paul chief executive of the $1.2bn turnover Caparo Group, a fast-growing automotive Tier 1 supplier, which created Caparo Vehicle Technologies to back the T1 project. We will help carmakers achieve their objectives by continuing to invest in advanced technology in order to develop new lightweight materials and commercialise their manufacturing processes so they are affordable for mass production.

Given the cars performance potential - the engine has already been successfully bench tested to 700bhp on methanol - we are now looking into the possibility of introducing for our customers an international T1 race series, says commercial director Sean Butcher. Our objective is to give customers an affordable and reliable season on the track without incurring the extraordinary costs of running a real Formula One car.

Customers comprise private individuals with a passion and desire for ultra high performance and corporate clients requiring an affordable yet prestigious track car for the fast growing market of hospitality race experience events, added Butcher.

In terms of colour and trim each of these highly exclusive hand-built cars, which has a starting price of £190,000 (excluding taxes), will be tailored to suit individual customer requirements.

Jeep Patriot

What price patriotism?

In the case of Jeep, it's from £15,995 for its new Patriot model that hits showrooms this summer.

Jeep PatriotWhistling the Stars and Stripes, the Patriot comes in two trims, so you can pick from the usual Sport and Limited specs.

There's also the choice of 2.4-litre petrol engine or VW-sourced 2.0-litre turbodiesel, and petrol buyers can also choose between manual or continuously variable transmissions.

All Patriots come with six airbags, ESP and part-time four-wheel drive that only sends power to the rear wheels when the car senses a loss of traction.

2007 Porsche Cayman

(from Porsche Press Release) 2007 PORSCHE® CAYMAN™ COMBINES COUPE ARCHITECTURE, MID-ENGINE DYNAMICS

2007 Porsche Cayman2007 Porsche Cayman 22007 Porsche Cayman 32007 Porsche Cayman 4Boxster® based hardtop offers gorgeous and aerodynamic package

Just as Porsche builds the Boxster and Boxster S roadsters, so it expands the Cayman sports coupe lineup for 2007 with the Porsche Cayman, a Boxster-based hardtop powered by a 245-horsepower, 2.7liter horizontally opposed “boxer” six-cylinder engine – and now with Porsche’s exclusive VarioCam® Plus variable intake-valve timing and lift technology that broadens the torque curve, increases fuel economy and helps to reduce emissions.

New for 2007 is a revised and updated Tiptronic® S automatic transmission, a standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and optional new 19-inch wheels with the same design as the 2007 911® Turbo.

But just as with the Boxster itself, the sports coupe’s story isn’t sheer acceleration – though it sprints from a standing start to 60 miles per hour in just 5.8 seconds (0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds). The 2007 Porsche Cayman’s story is one of amazing and balanced dynamic capabilities that come from its mid-engine design and mechanical architecture and what that means to the sort of fine-tuning done by Porsche’s legendary team of engineers.

But the 2007 Porsche Cayman is more than just another performance sports car. Its well-equipped passenger compartment was designed and engineered to be comfortable and well appointed for long-distance driving, whether on two-lane mountain roads or wide-open stretches of Interstate highway.
Like the Porsche 911 models and Cayman S, the power unit of the 2007 Cayman features VarioCam Plus technology. Maximum output of this six-cylinder power unit is 245 horsepower, with torque peaking at 201 lb-ft between 4600 and 6000 rpm. The 2.7-liter power unit comes with a lightweight crankshaft and a high compression ratio, with output of 91.2 hp per liter.

Linked to the standard 5-speed manual transmission, the 2007 Cayman not only accelerates quickly – and up to a speed of 160 miles per hour (258 km/h) on the test track, but is rated at 23 miles per gallon in city driving and at 32 mpg on the highway and meets ULEV II (ultra low-emission vehicle) standards.

Daihatsu Materia

Definitely from Daihatsu's cubist period, the new Materia is all straight lines and right angles. But we like it.

With function dictating form, the Materia is a box on wheels to give maximum interior space, and Daihatsu says the Materia is as big as a family car inside while being the same sort of size as a supermini outside.

Daihatsu MateriaDaihatsu Materia 2Daihatsu Materia 3The dash is a little more restrained in concept, with the speedo mounted in the centre of the dash-top, but otherwise fairly normal.

The engine is Daihatsu's straightforward 1.5-litre petrol with 103bhp, driven through either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox.

The Materia goes on sale in July with a standard equipment list that includes air conditioning, CD player, alloy wheels, privacy rear glass and four airbags.

All that, plus the stand-out styling from £10,995 looks pretty attractive to us.

Nissan Bolero and Nissan March

Nissan has made a few appearance updates to its March city car, five years since the latest-generation March came out in the home market. Known as the Micra elsewhere, the car made Nissan a household name in its category. The current nip and tuck are just to make sure it remains competitive until its replacement arrives in 2009.

Nissan BoleroNissan Bolero 2Nissan MarchThe exterior changes are almost invisible: new headlights and a revised grille and bumper. But check the list of features to understand why the new March/Micra excels: body-colored door handles, intelligent key, an option to plug in iPod or other music devices, a hard-drive-based navigation system — all unusual options in this price category.

Autech, a Nissan-related tuning house, concurrently offers an updated version of its Bolero, a retro-styled body kit for the March in Japan.

PGO Cevennes and PGO Speedster

You could be forgiven for thinking that the PGO Speedster II and Cevennes were just another couple of Porsche Speedster replicas, but they're not.

The styling may be closely based on the German classic, but these two open-tops are designed and built in France with a mid-mounted Peugeot engine, and right-hand-drive models are finished off in the UK.

PGO CevennesPGO SpeedsterThe 2.0-litre engine has 138bhp, which sees the 930kg PGO models from 0-60mph in 6.8 seconds and on to 134mph.

Decent enough performance, and PGO says the cars handle just as well thanks to a purpose-built tubular chassis - no ropey old VW Beetle floorpans here.

The Speedster II has a more traditional look, while the Cevennes is an updated idea of the Speedster shape.

Both cars come with 17in alloy wheels, leather interior and parking sensors as standard. The Speedster II costs from £28,889 and the Cevennes from £29,999.

Both cars will be on show at the Canary Wharf Motorexpo on June 11-17 and are on sale now.

Corvette Z06

If we were compiling a list of pointless special edition cars, this Corvette Z06 Ron Fellows would be a strong contender.

Aside from the Corvette already selling in penny numbers in the UK, hands up who knows who Ron Fellows is?

Ah, not many of you.
Corvette Z06Corvette Z06 2Corvette Z06 3Well, he's a Canadian racing driver who has helped Corvette become a highly successful team in endurance racing, and the company felt like marking his achievements.
The Z06 bearing his name only comes in white with a full-width racing spoiler on the rear, and Fellows' signature inside and out.
Only 33 of these cars have been set aside for European Corvette customers with a price of £69,197.
The saving grace of the Ron Fellows limited edition is that it's still a Corvette Z06 underneath with a seven-litre V8, a 0-60mph time of 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 199mph.
But then you get all that with the standard Z06 that costs £62,695.

Mazda CX-7 SUV

The Prime Minister might be glad-handing world leaders, but we know where the UK comes in the real world order.

That place is some way behind the US and Japan, where Mazda has already been busy selling its new CX-7 SUV.

We'll have to wait until September to see the CX-7 in showrooms.

When it does arrive, though, Mazda's SUV will have suspension tuned to cope with Europe's more demanding road surfaces.

This set-up work has included many laps of the Nürburgring, so the CX-7 should be able to go round corners well.

Power comes from a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine with 256bhp, borrowed from the Mazda 6 MPS, and coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox.

Mazda will announce prices and specs closer to the CX-7's September on-sale date.

Striking to the eye are also the stainless steel twin tailpipes, each with two 84 mm tailpipes on the left and right, which help to create that chunky look. To lower the suspension in vehicles with air suspension, JE DESIGN offers an electronic suspension lowering module, which allows the vehicle to be lowered by approx. 35 mm. For vehicles with conventional suspension, JE DESIGN also supplies a height-adjustable Variant 3 KW coilover suspension from stainless steel with adjustable rebound and pressure damping, which allows the suspension to be lowered by approx. 30 to 75 mm. Alternatively, a set of springs for the original shock absorbers for lowering the suspension by approx. 30 mm.

By way of tyres, JE DESIGN offers the AZEV wheel rim R in the size 10 x 22" ET 50 for or as a complete set of wheels equipped with 295/30 R 22 tyres.

A spectacular body kit "WIDE BODY" for the new VW Touareg is in preparation.

Peugeot 308

We're not convinced by this craze for 'family faces' sweeping through the car world.

Yes, sticking the same front end on all your cars might be good for brand recognition or something else equally buzz-wordy, but if your family face was Peugeot's current crop, wouldn't you consider surgery? Or, at least for the sake of your offspring, avoidance of interbreeding?

Peugeot 308Peugeot 308 2Peugeot 308 3These are the first shots of the Peugeot 308, the successor to the 307 and proud exponent of the Pug family face.

And the styling is almost depressingly predictable. The 308 gets the wide, gaping grill and pointier, more aggressive nose of the 207. It's not pretty, but at least you'll know it's a Peugeot.

There has been some Gallic cloning at play round the back of the 308, though, with a steatopygous rear end reminiscent of the fat-arsed Megane.

Peugeot is promising an improvement in the interior quality over the 307, with a fresh dash and more robust materials.

There's no firm word on engines yet, but expect the 308 to get the 1.6-litre petrol and diesel variants found in the new Mini line-up.

The 308 will doubtless spawn coupe-cabriolet and station wagon variants in the not-too-distant future.

We'll have more details on the 308 before it reaches these shores in the autumn.

ZAP-X

A quiet manufacturer from the backwaters of Norfolk wouldn't be the obvious contender to head the electric car revolution.

But Lotus engineers are already heavily involved in the Tesla Roadster, and they've turned their know-how to this in-house project: the ZAP-X Crossover Electric Car.

ZAP-XZAP-X 2ZAP-X 3ZAP-X 4Based on the earlier APX concept MPV, the seven-seat ZAP-X promises stunning economy and performance in a vehicle that's properly nice to look at.

The four electric motors - one in each wheel hub - together produce the equivalent of 644bhp, and whisk the all-aluminium car up to 155mph. Nought to 60mph is accomplished in 4.8 seconds.

While those are impressive figures, it's the battery-recharging rate that really catches the eye. Although most other electric car makers are stuck on full recharge rates of several hours, Lotus reckons the ZAP-X needs just 10 minutes to fill up on enough electrons to cover 350 miles.

If that claim proves to be remotely true, ZAP is introducing a technology that even Tesla has yet to offer. That would be a surprise to us and the industry as a whole.

And speaking of surprises, if you're wondering how the bottom image sneaked on - well, it's called the ZAP XEBRA, astonishingly from the same Lotus stable as the ZAP-X.

Featuring, but only just, a top speed of 40mph and a pathetic range of just 25 miles, this solar/electric car sullies the alternative fuel movement.

According to the manufacturer, the three-wheeled ZAP XEBRA is the offspring of 'more than three decades of thought and evolution'.

Three decades? That includes all the hours down the pub at lunch, does it?

Corbin's Raven Prototype Penciled in for Late-2008 Market Debut

The Corbin Raven, a three-wheeled vehicle now undergoing prototype testing, is slated to go on sale in late 2008 priced under $12,000. The manufacturer calls it "a commodity the American public doesn't yet know it wants."

Corbin Raven prototypeCorbin Raven prototype 2The Raven has a 0.8-liter gasoline engine — three cylinders, naturally — and makes 45-50 horsepower. The maker says the three-wheeled vehicle weighs 1,100 pounds and is expected to have a 65-mpg fuel economy average and a top speed of 50 mph. It also has three-wheel steering, and perhaps best of all for city dwellers, takes up only one-fourth of a traditional parking spot.

That's nothing compared with Corbin's future plans, which envisage a next-generation Raven that gets 100 mpg.

Corbin is a maker of motorcycle accessories and a previous lightweight three-wheeled vehicle called the Sparrow. The Raven will be on hand at the Alternative Vehicle Regatta in Washington, New Hampshire, June 17 and 18 as part of Alternative Energy Days.

For more information, visit the Corbin Web site.

XR3 Hybrid: Personal Mobility Vehicle

Robert Q Riley shouldn't be real.

He's like some mad Professor Brainstorm character who has accidentally stepped off the page of a comic and into reality.

A truly uninhibited inventor of all things you don't really need - a one-man submarine, a high-powered hovercraft, a recumbent bicycle - Riley's latest foray into free-thinking is a three-wheeled diesel-electric hybrid that carries two adults and can top 85mph.

XR3XR3 2Called the XR3 Hybrid, this 590kg Personal Mobility Vehicle will do 125mpg on pure diesel power. Or up to a claimed 225mpg if the plug-in electric motor is used too.

The XR-3 uses lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries to power the front two wheels and the 23bhp diesel engine sends its meagre output to the rear wheels.

The drivetrain is switchable by the driver, so you can either have a front-wheel, rear-wheel or all-wheel-drive vehicle depending on your need for speed, economy or traction.

Kits for the car go on sale in June, apparently. Be interesting to see how many people sign up to make Riley's mad dream come true.

Rolls-Royce Releases Images and Pricing on Phantom Silver

Only 25 copies of the Rolls-Royce Phantom Silver will be made to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the legendary Silver Ghost. And, as you might expect, the special model comes with a raft of goodies, including custom champagne flutes detailed with silver, silver tread plates and a solid silver Spirit of Ecstasy.

Rolls Royce Phantom SilverRolls Royce Phantom Silver 2Rolls Royce Phantom Silver 3Rolls-Royce said the Phantom Silver carries a $43,800 premium over the standard Phantom price. The base Phantom starts at $333,350 in the United States.

The Phantom Silver features a new exterior paint, "metallic ghost silver," and is equipped with 21-inch wheels with chrome centers. The cabin gets either rose leaf or crème light leather and Santos Palissander wood veneer. The company notes that the same veneer is used "on a specially designed presentation box that houses the key, two solid silver key fobs and a specially commissioned solid silver Conway Stewart fountain pen."

Rolls-Royce said more than 6,000 Silver Ghosts were built between 1907 and 1925, the majority of which are still in good running order.

New Renault Laguna

Reps, hold on to your polystyrene coffee cups: it's turning into a bumper season in the corporate car world.

Hot on the heels of the exemplary Ford Mondeo comes the latest iteration of Renault's omnipresent Big Car: yes, it's the third-generation Laguna. And it looks, well, rather like a Laguna.

Due to go on sale in the UK in early October, the revised Laguna appears fairly conservative, with definite hints of Peugeot 407 and new Mondeo (as well as a hefty chunk of old Laguna, naturally) in the styling.

Renault LagunaRenault Laguna 2Renault Laguna 3Renault Laguna 4Renault Laguna 5However, Renault is flagging up major improvements in build quality, refinement and green credentials, promising a more invigorating daily commute.

Despite developing a couple of extra centimetres of middle-aged spread in every direction, the new Laguna is about 15kg lighter than its predecessor.

This, combined with some 35mg of recycled plastics used in manufacture, backs up Renault's claims of a more eco-friendly Laguna.

The greenest engine in the line-up is a new 1.5-litre dCi, which develops 100bhp but boasts economy of 55.4mpg. With CO² emissions of just 136g/km, this puts the Laguna firmly into Passat BlueMotion territory.

There's also a two-litre petrol engine - available with 130, 150 or 175bhp - that will come with the option of Renault's new six-speed auto' box.

There's no genuinely hot version in the pipeline, however, with a 170bhp two-litre Turbo petrol engine topping the range.

However, Renault promises a more dynamic driving experience from the new Laguna, with more precise steering and less bodyroll.

The front and rear suspension has been stiffened by 20 and 50 per cent respectively, while there's a new anti-roll bar and more tightly geared steering to sharpen road responses.

We're not expecting a hardcore driver-focused experience, though. But with Renault promising the quietest drive in its class, the Laguna could be a worthy challenger for the Mondeo in the refinement stakes.

We'll find out when we get a proper look at the Laguna at the Frankfurt motor show in September. Don't forget that coffee.

Chevrolet Volt: GM Not Ready To Take Deposits Just Yet

Saying "we don't want to rush" the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle concept into production, the vehicle's chief engineer took to the Internet over the weekend for a progress report.

Chevrolet VoltChevrolet Volt 2The report, which ran on the GM FastLane blog and YouTube, was noteworthy for how little it revealed, such as where the Volt will be built, how much it will cost and whether the car's electric system could be used on other vehicles, like the Corvette.

But Volt Vehicle Chief Engineer Nick Zielinski did drop some tantalizing tidbits, such as the fact that GM is considering installing a solar panel in the Volt to power fans or provide a small charge to the battery. "We can't use it to power the motor," he said. "The amount of energy for a solar cell is 75 watts, not enough to power the vehicle at 20-50 mph."

He noted that "a lot of people" have contacted GM to sign up for a test-drive of the Volt, but "we're not at a stage where we can do that." He also said the automaker is not ready to take deposits on a production version of the vehicle. Zielinski also was coy about when and where production of the Volt will take place, saying, "We do not assign assembly plants this early in a program." He assured viewers that "we will be building it," although he refused to "share timing targets." He did not reveal pricing information about the Volt, but said it may have a "slight premium" over unspecified competitive vehicles.

Zielinski said the Volt's system is "tailored more to compact and intermediate-size vehicles" and assured viewers that "we'll have other vehicles out there." But "you may not see a pickup truck with E-flex," he said. GM describes E-flex as a "family of propulsion systems."

Zielinski appeared to be speaking from a GM garage. He asked himself questions drawn from what was described as a list compiled from consumer questions on the FastLane blog and then answered them. The Volt concept can drive 40 miles on electricity alone, GM says. The vehicle has roughly the same dimensions as a Chevrolet Cobalt.

Honda To Pull Plug on Accord Hybrid

In what may signal a major strategy shift by Honda, the Japanese automaker will phase out the gas-electric version of its Accord next year and replace it with a clean diesel, according to the Nikkei.
The move is expected to reflect Honda's future emphasis on clean diesels, in contrast to Toyota's focus on hybrids. The report says Honda will offer clean diesel options in its CR-V and Odyssey minivan as well.

In North America, Honda apparently will only offer hybrid systems in its smallest vehicles, including the Civic and a Fit-based subcompact car.

Inside Line has learned from supplier sources that the upcoming Accord diesel is likely to be a torquey 2.5-liter unit that gets 45 mpg on the highway and is inspired by diesels from Fiat and Renault. Honda is also said to be working on multiple-displacement diesels for the U.S. market. The move toward diesels by Honda is seen as a very significant step that may ultimately rewrite the book on diesels, since Honda is widely viewed as a leader in powertrain engineering. The Accord diesel is also expected to help Honda regain sales momentum that it has lost to Toyota in the alt-fuel fight.

The Accord Hybrid puts a premium on performance above fuel economy and is priced nearly $4,000 more than a conventional model. The automaker sold approximately 5,600 Accord Hybrid models last year, compared with more than 31,000 hybrid Civics. Toyota sold nearly 107,000 Prius hybrids in 2006.

Volkswagen Ecoracer, Volkswagen GX3

Former VW chairman Wolfgang Bernhard had his faults, no one could accuse him of lacking dynamism and energy. The two cars you see in the photos - EcoRacer and GX3 - were produced during his reign, along with the new Scirocco, and sadly they've all been consigned to the scrapheap along with Dr Wolfy himself.

Volkswagen EcoracerVolkswagen Ecoracer 2Volkswagen Ecoracer 3Volkswagen GX3The EcoRacer, in yellow, was a tech exercise to show what VW could do - it had an advanced turbo-diesel engine rated at 134bhp and weighed only 850kg.

The combination gave it a 0-62mph time of 6.3 seconds and a top speed of 143mph. A proper screamer - and 80mpg, too.

Wow. If VW is capable of producing such a thing, surely the time is right? The GX3 was one of the most striking machines to hit the roads in years - 1.6-litre engine, 125bhp, 570kg, 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds. But it's been killed by US crash protection laws. Allegedly.

Yes, VW is churning out BlueMotion variants all over the place and, yes, there's talk of resurrecting the 1 litre project. But it's all a bit, well, dull.

Come on VW, entertain us, and do it with a shade of green. We know you can.

Toyota Introduces Updated Premio and Allion Sedans

Toyota in Japan has a much more complicated model structure than anywhere else in the world. Its midsize Premio and Allion sedan models, which slot between the Corolla and the Camry, have just been redesigned. In Europe the gap between the Corolla and Camry was filled with the Avensis. Although the Avensis is now available in Japan, there's room for yet another upper-midsize sedan in Toyota's domestic lineup. In fact, Toyota believes there's room for two.

toyota premiotoyota premio 2toyota alliontoyota allion 2For decades, Toyota's mainstream model was the Corona, which in 2001 was replaced by the conservative Premio and the sportier Allion. Now both models have been thoroughly revamped. Mechanically, they are nearly identical to the Camry, but each model features distinctively individual styling in keeping with Toyota's Vibrant Clarity design philosophy.

The 185-inch-long front-wheel or four-wheel-drive sedans are powered by 1.5-liter or 1.8-liter four-cylinder gasoline engines mated to an intelligent continuously variable transmission system.

Features include smart entry with card and an advanced telematics service that automatically updates the car's navigation system and also has a warning function when the driver approaches a stop sign or a school.

The company hopes to sell a combined 60,000 units of both new models.

Most Affordable Lamborghini Ever !

It's probably the most affordable item ever with a Lamborghini logo, and it will get the biggest production run, too.

Lamborghini MiuraThe Italian post office on Friday issued a Lamborghini postage stamp dedicated to the Lamborghini Miura. The stamp costs Euro 0.85 (about $1.14) and has an anticipated production of 3.5 million.

The stamp and a limited number of first-day covers is available only in Italian post offices, but we expect it will end up on eBay at some point. The first-day cover includes a booklet introducing the stamp and the "legendary Lamborghini story," signed by Lamborghini President and Chief Executive Stephan Winkelmann.

The stamp is part of the "Made in Italy" series.

1928 Ford Speedster of Greg Cunningham

(from Greg Cunningham) This Model A Ford speedster was purpose built in the winter/spring of 2003 by myself, Greg Cunningham, to compete in endurance TSD rallies. The chassis is of Model A design with modifications abiding to the strict confines of Great Race regulations. With a Miller Overhead Valve conversion head and highly modified internals, the original four cylinder engine puts out over four times the horsepower it had when it left the assembly line in 1928.

1928 Ford Speedster of Greg Cunningham1928 Ford Speedster of Greg Cunningham 21928 Ford Speedster of Greg Cunningham 3I competed with this car in the Great Race for three consecutive years culminating with a Grand Championship in 2005. Following the win, I hand made a new, streamlined body consisting of chromoly tubework and polished aluminum alloy skins for the 2006 GR. Last summer, while defending our title, we did not fair so well as we endured mechanical difficulties throughout the event. However, we were recognized with the "Never Say Die" Award for our determination to cross the finish line in San Rafael, CA. This summer, with the sponsorship of Coker Tire, the car will compete in the 25th Anniversary Great American Race from Concord, NC to Anaheim, CA.

Last fall, the car competed in the Chattanooga Hill Climb. Surprising many other contestants who raced with modified chassis', modern transmissions, and fat tires; it won it's SP-2 (Speedster Overhead-Valve) division in it's Great Race set-up. Look for this car to compete in the Chattanooga Hill Climb again in the fall. For this run, I will make some mods to vie for the "King of the Hill" title.

Many youngsters get excited to see such an interesting car and are not shy to come to me and ask quesions like: What is it? How fast will it go? Did you make that? It's great to see such enthusiasm from a kid which is sparked by simply driving a cool car. Old-timers can associate with the Model A race car. Many tell stories of taking their driver's test behind the wheel of an old Ford. Some can even recognize modifications that they too may have made back in the day...or even tell me what I "shoulda' done".

So, how fast will it go?...I don't know...it has more speed than I have guts. 90 mph seems awfully fast in a Model A. Those guys must have been nuts to do 150mph plus in the late teens and early twenties!

Mazda Spiano

It is a relatively popular practice in Japan for one company to build cars for another, especially to fill low-volume niches that would otherwise be too expensive to do solo.

Mazda SpianoMazda Spiano 2Thus, Mazda has been able to plug a small gap at the bottom of its lineup with a version of the Suzuki Lapin. The Mazda variant, rebadged and marketed as the Spiano, has just received a modest face-lift in the home market, where it sells a mere 300 units a month.

The "new" Spiano still looks pretty much like the old Spiano, with its boxy, retro styling cues and plain-Jane cabin. Aimed mainly at young female buyers, the micromini gets new seat and door trim fabric and split rear seats. The instrument panel is done up in a white leaf pattern.

Did we mention there's also a new chrome grille?

2008 Cadillac CTS-V: New Spy Photos

Spy photos of the 2008 Cadillac CTS-V have been circulating for months, but these are the latest shots of Cadillac's upcoming super sedan.

2008 Cadillac CTS-V2008 Cadillac CTS-V 22008 Cadillac CTS-V 3The first time we caught spy photos and video of the 2008 Cadillac CTS-V, it was running the Nürburgring test track in Germany. It sounded as good as it looked and our best guess at the time was Z06 power under the hood.

Our prediction hasn't changed despite the obvious hood bulge on this prototype. Such bodywork is typically a telltale sign of a blower hiding beneath. Countless rumors have predicted various supercharged V8s, but we're sticking to our original call and predicting a normally aspirated 500-plus-horsepower LS7 under the hood.

Nothing else has changed on this prototype as far as we can tell. It has the same set of industrial-strength brake rotors up front along with a deep, wire mesh airdam. Equally aggressive bodywork wraps around the sides and dual exhaust pipes finish off the rear end.

The standard Cadillac CTS goes on sale this summer, so expect to see the 2008 Cadillac CTS-V at dealerships late this year.

Ford Caught Testing Australian Rear-Wheel-Drive Sedan in Michigan

Spies in Michigan recently snagged this photo of the next generation, Australian-built Ford Falcon sedan as it was being unpacked from a shipping crate in Dearborn.

ford falconAlthough the Falcon has no equivalent U.S. model, the fact that Ford brought one all the way to Dearborn for testing is fueling speculation that a new full-size, rear-wheel-drive sedan for the States is under consideration. This follows GM's announcement earlier this year that it would import one of its Australian-built rear-wheel-drive sedans and rebadge it as the Pontiac G8. Both Ford and GM have been ramping up their rear-wheel-drive programs after witnessing the success of Chrysler's 300 sedan.

The current Ford Falcon is offered in various trims ranging from your basic six-cylinder family sedan to the V8-powered sport XR8 with 350 horsepower. There are also several models tuned by Ford Performance Vehicles. We recently tested the Ford Falcon Boss 290 in Australia and managed to squeeze a 5.7-second 0-60 time and a 14.5-second quarter-mile. Not bad for a sedan the size of a Dodge Charger.

Chinese Automaker's Future Designs Supposedly Revealed on Internet

A Chinese blog is displaying what it calls "exclusive spy shots of a new Geely C-class sedan." The pictures show various influences that the automaker may be calling into play, ranging from Lexus to BMW and even Cadillac.

geelygeely 2geely 3geely 4One can only guess whether these illustrations really originate from Geely. Some of them are clearly Photoshopped versions of original Lexus press pictures, while others show very clear BMW and Cadillac influence. In any case, Geely is not known to have set up a styling center of its own.

On the other hand, Geely and its subsidiary, Shanghai Maple, are known for their ruthless copying of Western designs. Geely started out as a company by building Daihatsu copies with unfortunate-looking imitation-Mercedes grilles. Shanghai Maple invoked the wrath of Peugeot-Citroën by using its chassis technology. Nowadays Geely is trying to move away from this checkered past and craft a more upmarket image. If an upper-midsize executive sedan should ultimately be realized, these initial sketches reassure us that Western carmakers have nothing to be afraid of for the foreseeable future.

GM's Project Alpha Takes Shape

General Motors' plan for a new family of midsize, rear-wheel-drive cars is beginning to take shape, with the lead vehicle — an RWD successor to the Pontiac G6 — penciled in for a late 2010 intro, Inside Line has learned.

cadillac bls wagonpontiac solsticechevrolet malibu2007 pontiac g6The platform, called Alpha, also will underpin several other models in North America and Europe, beginning in model-year 2011, according to GM suppliers. Alpha reportedly has been designed to use bits of the Kappa platform on which the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky are based.

Replacements for the front-wheel-drive Cadillac BLS sedan and wagon, based on the rear-drive Alpha architecture, are due in early 2011. At that time, the car may be introduced in North America, where it would be slotted below the CTS in size and price, with stickers starting in the high $20,000s.

In model-year 2012, Saturn is slated to get an Alpha-based sedan, which may supplement rather than replace the front-wheel-drive Aura. The RWD Saturn four-door body will be shared with Opel and Holden, GM insiders tell IL.

However, GM still has significant plans for several of its existing front-wheel-drive midsize sedans. The old W-body platform (also known internally as MS2000) is being phased out after 2010. A successor to the W-body Buick LaCrosse, rebadged as the Regal, will shift to the Epsilon 2 platform in early 2009, followed by a redesigned Aura in late 2009. The new Epsilon-based Regal, according to IL sources, will be built and sold in both North America and China, with virtually identical sheet metal.

The Malibu gets a significant redesign this fall but isn't scheduled to move to the Epsilon 2 architecture until late 2010. About the time the last of the old W-body models — the Chevrolet Impala (rebadged as the Impala Classic) — is put out to pasture, Chevrolet may create a long-wheelbase, six-passenger companion to the Epsilon-based Malibu, to serve customers and fleets who prefer front-wheel drive and may shy away from the new RWD Impala that's coming in mid-2010. Chevy reportedly would pit this large FWD four-door against the Ford Taurus (née Five Hundred).

In Europe, replacements for the Saab 9-5 and 9-3 will shift to Epsilon 2, in mid-2009 and mid-2010, respectively. Opel and Daewoo also will have future products based on the same architecture.

2007 JNH Ferrari 360 Modena

(from J.N. Hephaiss) The sensitive task facing us when choosing to work on 360 Modena was whether we could put our own spice on the world’s most complete design, which was Pininfarina and whether we could improve functional-wise what Ferrari’s craftsmanship mastered in ground effect.

2007 JNH Ferrari 360 Modena2007 JNH Ferrari 360 Modena 22007 JNH Ferrari 360 Modena 32007 JNH Ferrari 360 Modena 42007 JNH Ferrari 360 Modena 5JNH’s long standing policy is not to work on anything if it’s only for dress-up purpose. Our motto is to use our magic to better the original design and function.

We have conducted numerous testing with stock car and what we witnessed there was disturbing. In 6th gear and extremely high speed situation, front under cover for which our modeler has nothing but praise was ripped apart and the fear of front lift ran through test drivers mind.

Extensive testing led us to this conclusion: 360 Modena is better left as it is. What we should do is respect the stock body and refine it JNH way.

Utilizing Venturi Tunnela and respecting Pininfarina design, specially on the side view --- What JNH proudly presents are: Front canard that’ll be separately installed, Splitter which looks perfect on smooth side view and Rear under diffuser that effectively handle air from the bottom of body.

BMW X5 4.8i M Sport

The weird science that is SUV genetics has another test-tube guinea pig in the form of the new BMW X5 4.8i M Sport.

BMW X5 4.8i M SportBMW X5 4.8i M Sport 2The utility part of the SUV genetic tampering is taken care of by the new X5, while the sport part is handled by the 355bhp 4.8-litre V8 motor implanted under the bonnet, which has 5bhp more than the previous model.

All that power propels the X5 4.8i from nought to 62mph in 6.5 seconds and on to 150mph.

Just to make sure you know this is the M Sport version, BMW has grafted on a bodykit, 19-inch alloys and sports suspension.

There are sports seats inside, and the usual Anthracite headlining and M-badged steering wheel.
The £53,440 X5 4.8i M Sport is sold out until the end of the year, but BMW is set to offer a Sport trim for the rest of the range, which is handy because this trim accounted for 90 per cent of the previous-gen X5's sales.

Maybe this SUV science is on to something. We still eagerly await the first 4x4 with a human ear grafted onto the roof, though.

UEV Electrum Spyder

A sports-focused electric vehicle from a Californian company trying to make green cars sexy? Sound familiar?

Hot on the heels of Tesla's celebrity electric roadster - and from a mere 350 miles away down the Cali coast - comes this, the UEV Electrum Spyder.

UEV Electrum SpyderUEV Electrum Spyder 2UEV Electrum Spyder 3UEV Electrum Spyder 4That's UEV for Universal Electric Vehicle, a company which promises to deliver 'better driving performance and aesthetic design' for zero-emissions cars.

Well, that 'aesthetic design' bit might cause some controversy. When the Electrum Spyder was unveiled at the Alt Car Expo in Santa Monica last December, it split opinion into two camps: those who thought it was a funky and fresh departure from the standard box-style electric car design; and those who thought that it looked like a cheap mini-rip-off of a Ferrari 360/Toyota MR2/probably a bunch of other stuff as well.

Unlike the Elise-based Tesla, the Electrum is a new design from the ground up.

UEV promises a range of up to 150 miles (dependent on 'driving habits' - take heed all you heavy right-footers) when the Electrum is fitted with the standard nickel zinc batteries.

However, spec your UEV with lithium ion batteries (that's Li-Ion in trendy So-Cal speak) and you'll get a range nearer 300 miles. The drawback? It'll add another $30,000 to the Electrum's $70,000 base price.

That puts the Electrum firmly in Tesla price territory - but it doesn't quite have the grunt to match. UEV is quoting performance figures of 7.0 seconds to 60mph, which is respectable if not spectacular, but a top speed of just 80mph. Which is a bit rubbish, frankly.

Such sedate performance is partially down to the Electrum's 1,400kg kerb weight, making it a proper porker in roadster terms: battery weight is still a massive hurdle in producing a viable electric car.

As is crash testing. Concerns have been raised that the Electrum hasn't yet been formally crash tested yet. However, UEV vice-president Greg Lane says digital crash modelling has already taken place and that the company is in negotiations to provide formal testing before the first vehicles go on sale early next year.

The Electrum looks likely to remain a rare vehicle, though: just 150 will be built in the first year, with production rising to 900 units within three years.

Nonetheless, it's good to see some competition for the Tesla cropping up... if the UEV makes it to production, that is. That electric car war ain't won yet, Mr Musk.

2007 JNH Porsche 996 GT3 Version 02

(from J.N. Hephaiss) What's consistent in Version.02 model is Urban Design. What's important in the end is how owners themselves like it, not how it is judged by others. In other words, it's the owners, not manufacturers nor media experts that find and decide the value of GT3. After all, Ver.02 is about how owners like to drive it. It is yin to ver.01's yang.

Great performance on both winding road and race circuit is without a doubt a must for a car to be called GT3 but it also has to appeal its presence even in a casual daytime cruise in urban area.

Ver.02 provides GT3 owners that rare combination of steady performance and not-too-excessive-but-it-still-stands-out appearance. JNH takes pride in taking in all different aspects of a car and proposing tailor-made design ideas for each and every car.

Ginetta's 50th birthday

Ginetta is celebrating its 50th birthday in the finest style possible by launching a new car and taking it racing.

The appropriately named G50 weighs just 800kg and will use a Ford-sourced 3.5-litre V6 engine with 300bhp and a five-speed sequential gearbox.

The low-slung coupe will be offered as a road car, with a price of around £35,000, while the racing version will take part in its own race series.

The Ginetta G50 Cup Car series will consist of 10 rounds at circuits across the UK in 2008, and all of the cars will run with the same specification and tyres.

Ginetta has not yet announced full specifications for the road or race cars, but it says production of the first 30 G50s is well under way and the road-going version will be on sale before the end of 2007.

2007 AC Schnitzer S3 Cabrio based on BMW 3 Series Cabriolet

(from AC Schnitzer Press Release) A Convertible provides the ultimate for the senses: Where can you experience driving more directly than in an open car, with the wind gently emphasising the acceleration, the acoustic muscle play of the engine teasing your ears, and a breathtaking silhouette reflected in every shop window. The new BMW 3-series Convertible, a complete car with folding hard top, stimulates the automotive pleasure centre without setting reason aside. When you've had one taste, you soon long for more.

BMW 3 Series CabrioletBMW 3 Series Cabriolet 2BMW 3 Series Cabriolet 3BMW 3 Series Cabriolet 4BMW 3 Series Cabriolet 5Engine

As for all current BMW models with 3.0d engine, we offer a diesel performance upgrade for the 3-series convertible. An additional control unit program provides 195 kW / 265 HP and a maximum torque of 550 Nm.

In order to provide performance upgrades for the 335d and 335i with the new Twin Turbo technology, totally new developments are required. These are currently in the first stages of the test phase. Despite the increase in power, the excellent driving behaviour, moderate fuel consumption and superb stability remain unchanged with both performance upgrades.

Even without engine tuning, we recommend to fit the sports rear silencer which - depending on base model - is available as a single system or in right-left combination. For a purely aesthetic conversion, tailpipe trims are also available "solo" for some models.

Suspension

The suspension components have been specially set up for the use of the wheel and tyre combinations. Depending on personal preference, the owner of a 3-series convertible of model range E93 can choose between pure suspension springs and a complete, performance-comfort set sports suspension which lowers the BMW by around 25 mm.

The suspension concept developed in extensive tests on the North Loop of the Nьrburgring also includes the AC Schnitzer sports antiroll bars for the rear axle and aluminium strut braces for front and rear.

Bodywork

In designing the bodykit, the objective for AC Schnitzer was not to hide the body contours under excessive bulges, but to emphasise the natural characteristics of the vehicle in a structured way.

So the front skirt, which simultaneously increases downforce, in its basic design follows the three-piece original but it is substantially softer, more facetted and more energetic.

Like the AC Schnitzer side skirts which aesthetically highlight the side crease of the convertible body and with their asymmetric lines, rising towards the back, emphasise the sporting abilities of the vehicle even when stopped.

Although the classic rear view of the new 3-series convertible is already eyecatching, the AC Schnitzer design language with its more strongly contoured rear skirt expresses extra sporting ambitions with no loss of credibility or coherence.

The Interior

For the interior of the convertible, an extensive range of high-quality accessories is available.

For example, the cockpit can be enhanced with an ergonomically designed airbag steering wheel. There is also a carbon steering wheel trim in silver Exclusive.

Another highlight in the interior is the AC Schnitzer speedometer display up to 300 km/h.

Footrests and pedals of aluminium create a more exclusive atmosphere in the cockpit together with the carbon interior trim in silver Exclusive. The aluminium gear knob, handbrake handle and cover for the BMW "i-Drive System" are available in silver or black anodized finish. Velours foot mats complete the range.

The Wheels

Type II and Type III alloys and racing rims are of course available. Wheel/tyre combinations are possible in various sizes from 17" to maximum 20", with 245/30 R 20 all round.

The avant-garde Type IV alloy with its optional chrome elements as well as the Type IV BiColor alloys constitute true highlights in the wheels sector.

Goodwood Festival of Speed

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is primarily about old cars thrashing up a country house's driveway.

But that hasn't deterred some of the world's most exclusive car makers from hijacking the event to launch their latest machinery.

fast carAt this year's Festival of Speed, which takes place on June 22-24, we'll see the 342mph Acabion GTBO for the first time in the UK.

Alongside the missile-styled Acabion will be the Bristol Fighter, which is the most powerful current production car thanks to its 1,012bhp 8.0-litre V10 engine.

We can also look forward to the launch of the Maserati Gran Turismo, Mercedes McLaren SLR Roadster and Caparo T1 putting in appearances.

British motorsport fans will also be treated to seeing all four current Brit Formula One drivers in the same place, at the same time, which is not always the case during F1 races.

The quartet is complete with the announcement that Lewis Hamilton will be at Goodwood alongside David Coulthard, Jenson Button and Anthony Davidson.

2007 JNH Porsche 996 GT3 Version 03

(from J.N. Hephaiss) ‘Stock Body Extension’ lineup was brought to fruition by taking into account a great number of customers’ feedback. It was to keep the quality of products at the same high level as those of Version.01 and 02 yet make it easier to attach to stock body. It can be attached to Stock Bumper / Side Skirt with ease (*) and it’s even easier to take it off when selling your cars.

2007 JNH Porsche 996 GT3 Version 032007 JNH Porsche 996 GT3 Version 03 2JNH’s pursuit of functionality is almost too honest to a fault and we are not here to make ‘decorative parts’ only. All the research put into developing Version.01 and 02 was once again essential in creating this series and it will show in real driving. One better than Stock Body, be the one to test the enhanced quality.

Functionality, design and convenience. New standard for autoparts.

Vandenbrink Ferrari 599 GTO

We're putting our eyes up for auction on eBay. We don't need them any more: we have reached ocular nirvana.

And it's all thanks to this: the Vandenbrink 599 GTO.

Arguably the best-looking car in the world, the 599 GTO is closely styled on Maranello's 1960s icon, the 250 GTO.

Vandenbrink Ferrari 599 GTOVandenbrink Ferrari 599 GTO 2Based on the underpinnings of the Ferrari 599, the GTO is part of a limited run of hand-made specials by Dutch coachbuilder Vandenbrink Design.

The GTO came about as a design study, but the incredible reaction of everyone who saw it convinced the company to build the car, and three of the five have already been snapped up for undisclosed sums of money.

The aluminium body has the GTO-trademark triple scoops in the nose, shark fin vents behind the front wheels and the scalloped rear wings flowing into an upswept tail.

The 6.0-litre V12 is untouched and produces 620bhp, but with less weight, the GTO manages 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 207mph.

If you fancy one, there are a couple of Vandenbrink GTOs left to order.

You'd need to auction your eyes to afford one, though.

Silverline Power Tool Drag Race

Powertools. Scary enough when they're standing still, but what sort of carnage would be wreaked if they were propelled at 50mph through a throng of spectators?

Well, if you're of a mechanical bent and not too emotionally attached to your extremities, you could find out this August at the Silverline Power Tool Drag Race.

Yes, that's right: angle grinders and circular saws turned into miniature drag racers and fired down a 75ft track. The competition is open to all-comers, so if you're a dab hand with a powerdrill and suture needle, this could be your chance for fame, fortune or very cheap surgery.

Apparently this is all part of an international power tool drag racing craze - one that's sadly failed to register on our radars until now. Presumably because most seasoned participants struggle a bit in the typing/writing department. Or, in fact, anything that requires fingers.

Anyhow, it's at the Haynes International Motor Museum on August 5; a date that the emergency services have circled in thick red pen.

More importantly, is power tool drag racing the most dangerous sport imaginable? It's right up there with nude piranha fishing and the rhino ironing world championships. However, we reckon it'd be a round of tiddlywinks in comparison to 12 rounds of no-holds-barred Stig wrestling.

Special Ferrari FXX

Welcome to a piece of history. You're about to witness the ultimate lap in the ultimate car driven by one of the world's greatest drivers.
It's a hot Friday in May, and the Ferrari FXX has just rolled into the pit garage at the famous Fiorano circuit. Only 30 of these incredible cars exist, 29 of them owned by some of Ferrari's most passionate customers, the final one by some bloke called Michael Schumacher.

Special Ferrari FXXSpecial Ferrari FXX 2Special Ferrari FXX 3Watch video
Ferrari describes the FXX as a mobile laboratory. It's not road legal, and you can't race it either. What it is, though, is a rolling test bed for top-secret new Ferrari technology, the stuff that's going to appear on the Enzo's successor in 2010.

Performance, handling, aerodynamics, braking: this is where Ferrari takes its F1 expertise and figures out how to apply it to a road car. This FXX is currently producing more than 850bhp, and its gearbox is about as fast at changing gear as Kimi or Felipe's Sunday drives.
Want to know how that feels? Want to see a master at work?
You'd better watch the video.
