2008 Audi R8

The innovative R8 supercar from Audi is now available for the first time with full LED headlamps. In addition to the standard Audi-signature 24-LED running lamps it's always had, this extremely expensive option (£3,590 converts to $7,100 USD) adds LED high and low beam headlamps and LED turn signals to the front fascia of the mid-engine sports car.

2008 Audi R8-12008 Audi R8-2The latest craze in automotive lighting, LED bulbs don't utilize a filament like halogen lamps or gas plasma like HID lamps. Instead, they create light from the movement of current across a semi-conductor chip. They are smaller, more vibration resistant, and much more efficient than traditional bulbs. According to Audi, the light from the LEDs has been designed to closely resemble daylight and provides a greater contrast to be easier on the human eye. LED illumination is also designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. Audi is no stranger to LED lighting - it first introduced a strip-shaped fog lamp at the Detroit Auto Show back in 2003.

2008 Dodge Journey gets dual clutch

Chrysler Group Australia will join Volkswagen and Audi in offering a dual-clutch transmission later this year when it launches the all-new Dodge Journey in Australia. The Journey is a vehicle CGA says takes the practicality of a people-mover, the capability of a sport-utility vehicle (SUV) and the overall efficiency of a passenger car and blends all the best attributes of each into an all-new “right-sized” crossover for the Dodge brand.

2008 Dodge Journey-12008 Dodge Journey-2CGA says the dual-clutch transmission, developed in conjunction with gearbox maker Getrag, will provide consumers a fuel economy improvement and CO2 emissions reduction of six percent.

Chrysler says that dual-clutch transmission technology improves fuel economy and CO2 emissions by reducing parasitic losses—first, by eliminating the torque converter, and second, through the use of synchronizers instead of shift clutches.
In its first Chrysler LLC vehicle applications, the new dual-clutch transmission will debut in international markets on the all-new 2008 Dodge Journey when mated to the turbo diesel variant.

Originally developed by Volkswagen, which calls its DSG, the dual-clutch transmission is an automatic transmission which utilises dual launch and shift clutches with a manual transmission style lay-shaft gear arrangement, instead of a conventional torque converter and planetary gears. During shifts, the next gear is anticipated and pre-selected. Then one clutch is opened while the other is closed, allowing shifting without torque interruption. The result is quicker acceleration and refined shift quality. Further, with the lay-shaft arrangement of gears, there is increased flexibility to optimise gear ratio selection for performance and fuel economy.

The Chrysler/Getrag version of the dual-clutch transmission does not require a torque converter to transfer engine torque to the transmission. Instead, it uses two wet multi-plate clutches. With the wet multi-plate clutch system, the clutch components are bathed in lubricating/cooling fluid in order to provide adequate thermal capacity.

2008 SsangYong ute for tradies

Korean manufacturer SsangYong has unveiled a new entry level variant of its popular Sports Dual Cab aimed at tradesman looking for a tough no-nonsense workhorse ute at a really low price. The SsangYong Sports Dual Cab Tradie boasts a value-for-money price tag of just $24,990 for the 4×2 five-speed manual powered by the eco-friendly common rail, 2.0-litre, turbo diesel engine.

2008 SsangYong-12008 SsangYong-2Ssangyong says this makes it the best priced dual cab diesel on the market.
To borrow, and bend, a famous phrase the SsangYong Tradie ‘will be available in any colour so long as it is white’ and will be equipped with steel wheels and a front disc/rear drum brake set-up. SsangYong spokesperson Kylie Claude says that while the Tradie is a low price workhorse it still comes with a swag of standard features including air-conditioning, power windows, remote locking and dual SRS airbags at no extra cost.

It utilises a diesel, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, common rail, turbo engine generating maximum power of 104kW at 4000rpm and maximum torque of 310Nm at 1800rpm, making it ideal as a tough workhorse or a smooth and quiet everyday drive.
As well as its low overall purchase price the Tradie also boasts a low fuel consumption of 8.1L/100km on the combined ADR cycle ensuring the fuel pump price shock is kept to a minimum. The Sports Dual Cab Tradie also features cloth trim and a no nonsense character while a strong 750kg payload and a standard tray liner making it the ideal business partner for tradesman as well as in mining, construction, forestry or on the farm.
The Tradie will also be available as a 4×4 manual priced at just $27,990, well below the price of many other diesel 4×4 dual cabs on the market.

According to SsangYong Motors Australasia managing director, Russell Burling, the Sports Dual Cab Tradie answers a strong demand from tradesmen, fleet operators and farmers seeking an economical diesel twin cab that doesn’t compromise on safety or performance.
“Clearly there is a demand for a vehicle like this that has less of the creature comforts and a lower price for those seeking a more basic and less luxurious vehicle,” said Mr Burling.
“The Tradie proves that you don’t have to compromise comfort or safety in a basic dual cab ute for under $25,000,” he added.

Chevrolet Volt price below $30,000

After some news on General Motors’ plans for the Paris show, the revolution is that it wants to continue with the Chevrolet Volt: a compact hybrid that will guarantee at least 60km of autonomy, with only lithium ion batteries, in addition to the classic hybrid function of petrol, diesel or ethanol depending on the target market.

Chevrolet Volt -1Chevrolet Volt -2The original concept car, seen in the following images, was presented at the 2007 Detroit show, and the hope is to see a modern and minimalist style, couragious but close to current taste in cars.

60,000 units of prodution are foreseen and Chevrolet is expecting to return big thanks to this model. The price, less than $30,000, will contribute to this hope for success, especially as petrol prices continue to frighten the world’s markets. Commercialisation is expected for 2010 and in the meantime we’ll see whether we’re in a petrol crisis, like 1970, or simply if the environmental spirit of the Volt will win.

2008 Audi TT Roadster Car Review (Trailer)

From the moment we saw it as a concept car in 1995, the Audi TT cast a rather unique shadow. Audi really blew us away as they brought a car to market that was both organic in nature, symmetrical to the eye and bore the name of one of the most exciting road races in history!

The Audi TT Roadster is about as unique a convertible as you can get, and once inside you feel like a real open top sports car driver. She handles superbly and rewards you at every turn. So - while there may be harder edged sports cars out there - if you are after a stylish, energetic and definitely individual driving experience then pop out and get behind the wheel of the Audi TT Roadster.

Ford eyeing Mexico for Fiesta production

Ford has been teasing us with a US-bound Fiesta for years, and the Blue Oval has only said that the well-executed B-car would be built in North America. With time to start producing Fiestas running short, Ford appears ready to publicly announce where the vehicle will be built, and it looks like the Fiesta will be made south of the border. The extremely low cost of labor in Mexico makes building inexpensive economy cars there a no-brainer, and Ford's Cuatitlan plant already builds the current Euro Fiesta and a Fiesta-based vehicle for the Mexico/Brazil markets.

Ford FiestaThe Fiesta is scheduled to appear Stateside by 2010, but with the radical shift towards smaller, more efficient vehicles, we wouldn't be surprised if Ford bumped up that timeline.

2008 Mazda CX-9 Review

Making a great thing even better is a wonderful thing indeed -- like adding Al Pacino to the Ocean's 11 cast or plugging Alex Rodriguez into the Yankees lineup. After only one year in production, the 2008 Mazda CX-9 can now be included on that "great things made better" list along with Al, A-Rod and Diet Coke with lemon.

2008 Mazda CX-9 -12008 Mazda CX-9 -2Last year's CX-9 featured a 263-hp, 3.5-liter V6 that we described as having "strong pull through the midrange, as well as impressive smoothness and a sporty sound when the whip is cracked." It also brought the CX-9 from zero to 60 mph in a tidy 7.7 seconds, which was very quick for its class. In other words, this was an engine that didn't need to be replaced. Mazda did it anyway. The 2008 CX-9 features a bored-out version of the "old" engine shared with the Ford Edge and other Ford family products, resulting in a 3.7-liter displacement, 273 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. The new engine, and its transmission, is also now built in Japan rather than in the United States.

Aside from its engine, the CX-9 remains the same. It still boasts a very spacious interior, including a third-row seat that is legitimately habitable for adults, with relatively easy ingress and egress made possible by a fold-and-slide second row. That interior is also elegantly tailored in any of the three trim levels, with an attractive dash design, high feature content and excellent materials. Best of all, the CX-9 sets itself apart with superb handling that makes this 4,500-pound sport-utility feel like a much smaller vehicle. Just because this is the largest vehicle Mazda has ever produced doesn't mean it lacks that zoom-zoom attitude.

The seven-passenger midsize crossover segment is expanding faster than Donald Trump's ego. An all-new Toyota Highlander and forthcoming all-new Honda Pilot should make things harder for the 2008 Mazda CX-9, which already has been greeted with three formidable opponents from GM's Buick, GMC and Saturn divisions. Yet this Mazda's ability to meld real utility, sharp good looks, excellent quality and a fun-to-drive personality make it a very tough package to beat.

Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG spied

Spy photographers have captured exclusive photos of the all-new Mercedes E63 AMG - the high performance version of the as yet unrevealed Mercedes E-Class. Both cars are still at least two years away from showrooms, with the E-Class not due to make its first public appearance until the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Codenamed the W212, Mercedes will be abandoning its Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) system for the new E-Class in favour of conventional brakes.

Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG -1Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG -2Although it will boast other features such as wet-weather disc wiping and wheel-selective cornering brake control on all variants instead.

Optional ceramic-composite discs could be introduced from top-down, starting with the AMG model pictured here for the first time, on its way to the legendary German Nürburgring race circuit.

Driver assistance will be a major theme for the new E-Class which is likely to feature lane-departure warnings, an eye-movement monitor, traffic-sign identification, road-condition sensors, and stability control that accounts for crosswinds, camber changes, and tire wear.

The engine line-up will likely mimic that of the new C-Class with the usual V6 and V8 engine plus the 370kW-plus 6.3-litre V8 for the AMG model.

2008 Buick Enclave Review

Buick wants to be known as a premium automaker, but none of the vehicles the brand has rolled out over the last five years have fully lived up to their luxury billing. The 2008 Buick Enclave could be the one that breaks Buick's mediocrity streak.

At first glance, the Enclave is just another new crossover SUV with a standard V6, a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and seven- and eight-passenger seating configurations. But step inside and it's a different story from other Buicks. The cabin doesn't look like it was built to a price; rather, it comes across as a product of thoughtful design, with artistic curves to the dash, shapely front seats and Tiffany Blue-inspired illumination. On the whole, the '08 Enclave is a step up for Buick and a viable entry in the premium crossover SUV class.

2008 Buick Enclave The Enclave still shares its underpinnings with GM's latest batch of crossover SUVs, including the Saturn Outlook and GMC Acadia. All use fully independent suspension, and all have an all-aluminum 3.6-liter V6 good for 275 hp, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Interior dimensions are massive by midsize SUV standards. Not only can the Enclave accommodate adults in all three rows, it has a maximum cargo capacity of 116 cubic feet -- more room than most full-size sport-utilities. A 60/40-split, fold-flat third-row seat is standard in every Enclave, and in keeping with the Buick's upscale mission, twin captain's chairs are fitted in the second row. For families who need even more seating capacity, a bench seat is available for no extra charge, and conveniently, this seat also folds flat. Cloth upholstery and rich-looking wood-grain trim are standard in all Buick Enclaves, and leather is included on the upscale CXL model. All the expected safety equipment, including stability control and three-row side curtain airbags, is standard across the board.

We have no doubt that the 2008 Buick Enclave crossover SUV will be a practical family vehicle for buyers who have $35,000 to $45,000 to spend and don't want a minivan. However, its success as a luxury SUV is not as certain. Although more opulent in its design and furnishings than other Buicks, there are still a few questionable interior vinyls and plastics. That could be a liability against the upscale interior treatments of competitors like the Acura MDX, BMW X5, Lexus RX 350 and Mercedes-Benz M-Class. However, the Enclave costs less than all of these rivals, potentially offsetting this weakness.

Ugur Sahin Design unveils USD GT-S Passionata concept

The Turkish designer has dreamed up the Corvette Z03 Concept, and before that brought the world his interpretation of what a modern Ferrari Dino might look like (he was a little off). It turns out that Sahin has been continually evolving his Dino design, however, and today we get our first look at the result of his extra doodling: the USD GT-S Passionata concept. Based on the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, the Passionata retains the grand sports tourer personality of its host chassis, but adds a body that's much more organic with swoops, bulges and soft curves everywhere the eye falls.

USD GT-S Passionata concept-1USD GT-S Passionata concept-2The mega hood scoop makes the car look a little insect-like, and we also see some cues inspired by the Corvette, Lotus and even McLaren F1 in the front end, but overall it's a knock out design and the connection to Ferrari's own design language is unmistakable. Truthfully, we just wish that we could draw cars this well. Sahin, however, is hoping to do more than just draw the Passionata, as he claims in his press release after the jump that "production will be arranged" if there's a demand for it.

Unfortunately, a brand new Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano will have to be sacrificed to build the Passionata, which we think probably violates Ferrari's warranty.

BMW X6 35D

It’s the car that’s created a new niche in the market: an opinion-splitting mix of coupé and SUV the likes of which we’ve never seen before. Or so BMW would like you to think. If BMW’s marketing men are to be believed, the X6 is in a class of its own – and when it comes to the styling, that’s certainly true. It resembles a pumped-up X5 complete with a dramatically sloping roofline, and so is hardly lacking in road presence.

At the front, the X6 has a similar face to the X5. And the familiar feel continues inside, with the same dashboard layout. It’s logically arranged and flawlessly put together, and features superb materials. The driving position is perfect and space up front is generous, although the same cannot be said of the rear. Despite its size, the X6 is a strict four-seater – and passengers over six feet tall will struggle for headroom, due to that sloping roofline.

BMW X6 35D-1BMW X6 35D-2Boot capacity is a healthy 570 litres with the seats in place and 1,450 litres folded flat. And although the area is a little shallow, the hatchback tail makes loading much easier.

Under the skin, the X6 shares a lot mechanically with the X5, but adds BMW’s clever Dynamic Performance Control (DPC) package. This enhances the traction and stability served up by the xDrive 4x4 system by splitting torque not only between the front and rear axles, but also the left and right-hand wheels.

Adding to the fun is the 286bhp 3.0-litre twin-turbodiesel powerplant, which features under the bonnet of the X6 35d driven here. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission as standard, and provides outstanding performance, thanks to its torque figure of 580Nm.

The benchmark 0-60mph sprint is dispatched in only 6.9 seconds, yet the big X6 is also economical, returning 34mpg on the combined cycle. The oil-burner is refined as well, offering a hushed note at all times.

Other power choices in the range include a 3.0-litre diesel with a single turbo in the 30d. This delivers 235bhp and arrives later this summer. There are two twin-turbo petrol models: a 306bhp 3.0-litre and a 407bhp 4.4-litre V8 for the flagship 44i.

2008 Toyota Rav4 CV6 review

The surge of urgency delivered by the engine hits all at once and is extremely sharp. To the regular driver, this can come as a total shock in certain situations. It’s way too much power to be sending through such a vehicle and in my opinion, it should have been down-tuned to reduce the spasmodic delivery of power, perhaps with more concentration on producing torque.

Interior room is impressive, as are the ergonomics of the seats. They fold down quite easily and provide easy entry/exit for children and adults. The sound system is quite average and the head-unit looks poorly integrated, unfortunately this is a trait shared with the Corolla and Kluger.

2008 Toyota Rav4 CV6-12008 Toyota Rav4 CV6-2The quality of plastics is good, but some feel a bit cheap (like the dash surrounds and door handle surrounds). Interior room is great for a small family and the styling is good enough to keep the masses pleased. Fuel economy on test was reminiscent of a V6 – around 11-litres/100km.

Priced from $39,990 for the base model CV6 (as tested), prices move onto $43,990 for the SX6 and max out at $49,990 for the ZR6. The Mitsubishi Outlander and Honda CR-V offer a better package. If you are desperate for a V6 though, Mitsubishi’s offering is far more linear and smooth and is capable on mild off-road tracks. The Outlander’s engine is well behaved and can be controlled by steering wheel paddle shifters – a quaint touch.

As for the Rav4. If driven sedately it’s a car you could live with. But if the off chance arises where full power is required, you would need to be paying full attention.

2008 Mercury Grand Marquis Review

Mercury's largest sedan continues to provide traditional American-car values, with rear-wheel drive, a standard V-8 engine and a spacious six-passenger interior with a roomy 20.6 cubic foot trunk. The standard 224-horsepower, 4.6-liter V-8 engine may also be ordered with E85/flex-fuel capability in some markets. A four-speed automatic is standard.

The power of the standard engine can be goosed a bit if you order the optional Handling Package (LS models only) which adds dual exhausts and boost the engine's output to 239 horsepower.

2008 Mercury Grand MarquisThe Marquis is quiet and comfortable, with a smooth ride and relaxed handling. Four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes are standard, with traction control, front-side airbags, and a rear air suspension optional.

Changes for '08 include a simplified trim lineup, base GS and up-level LS. A Palm Beach package — your dead giveway on the target audience — includes side airbags and other upgrades. Tire pressure monitors are now standard.

Three new packages are offered for the 2008 model year as well — a GS Comfort Appearance Package adds leather, a power driver seat and painted wheels, while the GS Confidence Package includes power mirrors and traction control. The LS Travel Package gets a CD player.

MINI Cooper Cabriolet spied

A cabriolet edition of the outrageously popular MINI Cooper has been spied testing just outside the firm’s Munich headquarters.

Available later this year in Europe, the MINI Cooper Cabrio will feature the same model line-up as its hard-top sibling.

MINI Cooper Cabriolet -1MINI Cooper Cabriolet -2Judging by the size of the rear C-pillar, visibility doesn’t seem to have improved over the hard-top model either.

Although perhaps of most concern is the apparent lack of storage for the soft-top roof, however we will have to wait until more photos surface with the roof down before we can pass judgment.

2008 Toyota Yaris Rush

With 22 rivals in the light-car segment and the new Mazda2 taking some of the limelight away from Toyota’s Yaris, the Japanese giant has announced a special-edition Yaris RUSH model to give buyers a reason to come back to the Big T.

Not that Toyota needs to be worried, so far this year the Yaris has been the best selling light-car in Australia. Toyota has held this title with the Yaris and Echo for the last five years, but it never hurts to be more competitive.

2008 Toyota Yaris Rush-12008 Toyota Yaris Rush-2Available for a limited time, Yaris RUSH is essentially a YR 5-door hatch with more than $1000 worth of added specification for $500.

The 14-inch steel wheels are replaced with 15-inch alloys from the more expensive YRX model and the standard single CD player has given way to a six-stack system with Bluetooth connectivity and added foglamps. Buyers also receive “Yaris”-branded mats and a special-edition badge.

Standard features of the YR model include twin front airbags, air-conditioning, anti-skid brakes, power windows and mirrors, seatbelt pretensioners and force limiters for the front seats and power steering.

Unfortunately buyers still need to pay an extra $750 for side and curtain airbags. Metallic paint is also an additional $300. The 1.3-litre four-cylinder Yaris is priced from $16,890 for the five-speed manual and $18,390 for the four-speed automatic.

Honda FCX Clarity - a small hyrbid next year

Honda has confirmed recent reports regarding its plans to expand its hybrid range. The juciest news is certainly the announcement of a new five seater that will be launched at the beginning of next year.

Honda FCX ClarityThe brand new model will be very light and economic to manufacture, two characteristics making “the most convenient hybrid on the market”, according to the company. Honda has also underlined its versatility: the Japanese technicians have managed to place the battery much lower, creating significant volume for the boot.

The name and the models details will be revealed by the end of the year, but the company has already anticipated that we will see some style aspects from the FCX Clarity presented at Los Angeles in 2007. Honda is counting on manufacturing 200,000 units, half of which will be destined for the North American market.

Renault unveils Laguna Coupe in Cannes

With the Monaco Grand Prix and the Cannes Film Festival both taking place this weekend on the shores of the Mediterranean, Renault chose the latter as the backdrop for its latest model unveiling. The new Laguna Coupe is getting a preview amongst the stars of Cannes with a stylish new look that gets away from some of the downright bizarre hindquarters of some recent Renaults. Along with the midsized coupe, the French automaker is revealing a pair of new V6 engines fueled by gasoline and diesel.

Renault Laguna Coupe-1Renault Laguna Coupe-2The gas engine comes in at 3.5 liters and 240hp, and while we are unlikely to see the Laguna on US shores anytime soon (or ever, for that matter), the diesel engine will be appearing under the hood of cars from Japanese partner Nissan in 2010. The 3.0L diesel V6 was shown last fall at the Frankfurt Motor Show, generates 235hp and 331 lb.-ft. of torque, and is expected to join the Nissan Maxima lineup in a couple of years. The front-wheel-drive Laguna coupe should have some interesting chassis dynamics thanks to its four wheel steering system. Renault will provide full details on the new coupe at the Paris Motor Show in October.

Honda - Difficult is worth doing

Honda is taking the bold step of running a series of unbranded TV ads about skydiving to build interest ahead of the launch of a car model. The campaign, developed by ad agency Wieden & Kennedy London, consists of four short teaser clips that are devoid of any Honda branding.

Difficult is worth doing” - is a series of short unbranded teaser advertisements around skydiving, to build interest ahead of the final ad which is being aired in June. This is one of the most expensive TV ads ever made and it’s for the launch of a car model.

Each of the clips, the first of which breaks during The Duke: A Portrait of Prince Philip, talks about different aspects of the skill needed to create large skydiving formations.

"We are hoping to give people insight, to let people in, to a certain degree, with what is happening," said the Honda account director at W&K London, Jonathan Tapper.

Difficult is worth doing - Part 1 – Introduction

This would not be a strange question should we be at the introductory lesson of pottery class but we’re at Perris Drop Zone, California, one of the leading skydive centers in the world; at the briefing for the filming for the new Honda TV ad. BJ Worth, the stunt coordinator for this commercial is briefing his team of skydivers on what they will be doing for the next 5 days.

Mazda2 5-door spotted in California

Although we've seen the Mazda2 before in 3- and 5-door configurations overseas, the presence of it at a local car meet in Southern California had us once again speculating about its sales potential in the States. The fact that the meet was held at Mazda's SoCal HQ means that the car could simply be undergoing evaluation, but judging by the reaction of the crowd, we think this has better sales potential than the 2009 Focus that was parked at the other end of the lot. While the exterior looked pretty spiffy, the interior looked cavernous.

Mazda2 5-door -1Mazda2 5-door -2Smart design, and a worthy competitor for the Yaris, Versa and Fit. While we've heard that Ford's version of this car, the Fiesta, will make it to our shores eventually, we still don't know for sure about this lovely little Mazda. Mazda keeps waffling. We'll keep our fingers crossed, especially knowing there's that Mazdaspeed2 in the mix, at least overseas. But that's where all of the magic seems to start nowadays so there is hope.

2009 Aston Martin DB9 power boost

The 2009 Aston Martin DB9 has joined its baby brother, the V8 Vantage, for a performance overhaul. The DB9’s 6.0-litre V12 engine has been boosted from 335kW to 350kW with torque now nudging the 600Nm mark.

This has shaved a tenth off the supercar’s 0-100km/h time - dropping to just 4.6 seconds with the top speed jumping to 305km/h.

2009 Aston Martin DB9Handling has also been improved thanks so revisions made to the chassis and suspension setup.

Not unlike the V8 Vantage, the 2009 DB9 will also feature a new centre console and switch gear - a highly criticised aspect of the existing model.

It will also receive a new ECU (Emotional Control Unit) as seen in the striking Aston Martin DBS.

Exterior changes include new side mirrors, a revised grill and updated 19-inch wheels.

Transsyberia rally 2008 Porshe teams prepare

Stuttgart. Between Moscow and Ulaanbaatar they will compete against each other, but prior to the start of the 2008 Transsyberia Rally, they all pull together: In a joint intensive training from 20 to 22 May, the 19 teams - who place their trust in the Porsche Cayenne S Transsyberia – undergo preparations for the famed long distance rally in July. Aside from extensive offroad driving practice, participants also learn how to handle the navigation system down pat. They also receive valuable tips from last year’s winner Rod Millen as well as from the double Dakar winner Andi Schulz.

The instruction course begins with general information on the rally.
Experienced competitors share their knowledge with Transsyberia rookies. In a technology seminar, Porsche engineers instruct the drivers and co-drivers. The pilots themselves are responsible for basic maintenance work. Only when major technical problems crop up or in the case of an accident does the technical team, which accompanies the participants along the entire route, step in to help. During the course, participants also practice using the sand ladder and winch as well as vehicle recovery.

Porsche Cayenne S Transsyberia-1Porsche Cayenne S Transsyberia-2During various driving sections, competitors learn how to cope with very difficult terrain conditions as well as how to control the vehicle on fast gravel passages. The training for co-drivers far exceeds the use of special navigation equipment. Professional co-driver Andi Schulz, navigator to Armin Schwarz who contests the rally for Porsche AG, gives competitors advice on the correct preparation for complex navigation tasks. Another crucial chapter includes learning to read the terrain. Only those who can interpret the countryside from a distance can show their drivers the best route and give ample warning of deep trenches, for example.

For many of the participants, the training in and around Leipzig is the first opportunity they have had to familiarise themselves with the modified Cayenne S Trannsyberia. Compared to its predecessor, the 2008-spec features an improved suspension set-up, an optimised sump guard protection and a more robust all-terrain tyre with considerably higher side walls. The 385 hp V8-petrol direct injection power unit taken from the standard Cayenne S remains unchanged. The torquey 4.8-litre engine proved to be totally reliable during the 2007 Transsyberia, even using fuel of inferior quality, like 91 Octane.

The Transsyberia Rally takes off on 11th July in Moscow and finishes after more than 7,000 kilometres on 25th July in Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia.

Aston MartinThe 961 Aston Martin DB4 GT Coupe stole the show with the highest bid of £1,079,500 (that its approximately equivalent to $2,139,650). This is the highest price paid for this model that had only 75 units.

2008 Gemballa Avalanche 600 Porsche GT2 EVO

(from Gemballa Press Release) Demonstration of expertise: GEMBALLA Avalanche 600 GT2 EVO

• 600 bhp and 840 Nm torque thanks to GEMBALLA power kit
• 320 km/h, 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds
• Elegant and sporty body conversion with special paint finish
• Sports exhaust system and 20-inch “Racing” wheels
• Coilover suspension; more powerful braking system
• Sporty and luxurious interior trim

Being one of the premier addresses for stylish and refined Porsche tuning, GEMBALLA has earned itself a worldwide reputation over the course of time. Thanks to its outstanding expertise, proven in numerous conversions, each customer acquires a vehicle that represents the absolute pinnacle of what is achievable in terms of design and performance. One further such demonstration of its abilities is GEMBALLA’s “Avalanche 600 GT2 EVO”.

2008 Gemballa Avalanche 600 Porsche GT2 EVO-12008 Gemballa Avalanche 600 Porsche GT2 EVO-22008 Gemballa Avalanche 600 Porsche GT2 EVO-3Ready for take-off?
The basis of the Avalanche 600 GT EVO is the Porsche 997 turbo or the GT2. GEMBALLA even knows how to boost the already impressive set of performance figures of the production model. 600 bhp (442 kW) put the competition from Maranello and Sant'Agata-Bolognese in a tight spot. The six-cylinder boxer with a torque of 840 Nm – power-boosted by the GEMBALLA power kit - stands out even more. Jet-like acceleration in every gear and at every speed being the outcome. A sports intercooler ensures that this performance can be reliably accessed even in hot ambient temperatures. As an option, this task can also be performed by a racing sports intercooler.

The power boost is acoustically announced by the sports exhaust system fitted by GEMBALLA, whose awesome sound thrills the vehicle occupants and listeners alike. Upon request, this can also be achieved by means of a four-pipe system instead the two tailpipe versions. GEMBALLA’s power boost allows the modified 997 to race at a top speed of 320 km/h, accomplishing the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds. The latter can – depending on the driver’s skill – be even further enhanced by fitting the sport shifter for vehicles with a manual gearshift, reduced gear lever travel, which is available in the “Sport” and “Race” versions.

2008 BMW 5 Series Review

There are few cars that achieve such a perfect mix of comfort and fun like the 2008 BMW 5 Series. It is a wolf in a flamboyant sheep's clothing: a comfortable midsize sedan that handles and performs like a sports car. And for a real surprise, a wagon model offers the same wolf but in utilitarian pack mule clothing. While other carmakers relentlessly pursue this automotive pinnacle, BMW consistently raises the bar to keep itself on top of the heap.

For 2008, the current-generation BMW 5 Series receives its most important update since the car's 2004 introduction. Most significantly, there are two new six-cylinder engines in the 5's lineup. Last year's 215-hp 525i model has been replaced by the 230-hp 528i. Even more significant is the mid-level 2008 535i. Replacing the 530i, the 535i comes with an all-new 300-hp, twin-turbo engine. Along with the V8-powered 550i, the new engine lineup makes the 5 Series an even more attractive performance sedan.

2008 BMW 5 Series-12008 BMW 5 Series-2With new, innovative technologies coming at a mile-a-minute pace in this premium midsize luxury segment, BMW has introduced several standard and optional features for the 2008 5 Series. Six-cylinder models now offer Brake Energy Regeneration, which takes a page from hybrid powertrains by capturing excess braking energy and using it to power the car's many electronic systems.

There's also an upgraded cruise control system this year. Optional on automatic-transmission 5 Series, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go works much like Mercedes-Benz's Distronic Plus by maintaining vehicle distance at highways speeds and in stop-and-go traffic. For safety, a new Lane Departure Warning system option alerts the driver through vibrations in the steering wheel when the car starts to drift out of its lane.

The 2008 BMW 5 Series remains one of our favorite midsize luxury cars, even if its endless technology can seem a tad reminiscent of HAL 9000. Its deep options list can also raise the 5's price tag into the ionosphere, with the 550i easily reaching $70,000. Nevertheless, for those with deep enough pockets, the 5 Series offers a level of driver involvement unmatched by its competitors.

Maserati GranTurismo S

If the latest Lamborghini is one of the world’s ultimate supercars, local rival Maserati produces one of the best luxury coupés. The gorgeous GranTurismo has been on sale for a year now, and to mark its first anniversary, the company has launched a new S version. It costs a hefty £11,250 more than the standard car, but extra power, a hi-tech automated gearbox and various styling tweaks show where the money has been spent.

Maserati GranTurismo S-1Maserati GranTurismo S-2On the outside, bespoke 20-inch alloy wheels are the most obvious change, but the S also comes with black headlamp surrounds, new side skirts and a pronounced lip added to the bootlid. Twin oval exhausts also give a clue to the extra performance available, while new seats covered in leather and Alcantara feature inside. The biggest changes are reserved for the engine and gearbox. Under the bonnet there’s a new 4.7-litre V8 instead of the 4.2-litre unit found in the standard car. It produces 434bhp – a 35bhp increase – and an impressive 490Nm of torque.

That’s enough to blast the S from 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds and to a top speed of 183mph, making this the fastest mainstream production model Maserati has ever made. The firm’s clever automated manual is the only gearbox option which is available, and this has been improved, too. Choose Sport mode, and the paddleshift set-up can swap ratios in 100 milliseconds. This setting also sharpens throttle response and opens a bypass valve in the exhaust, which gives the S a much louder bark to match its fiercer bite. As a result, the car drives and sounds like a proper sports GT.

The racy new soundtrack and pulsating power delivery, plus suspension that has been lowered by 10 per cent, make it even better on the road than before. Ride comfort is still acceptable, and with the Sport mode disengaged, the engine note is as subdued as it is in the standard car – so the GranTurismo’s long-distance ability remains intact.

Flaws are few, but the worst offenders are the numb steering and hard seats. Then there’s the price. The new S isn’t cheap, but this charismatic model is set to become the automatic choice for buyers who want a manual version of Maserati’s coupé masterpiece.

Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 unveiled

Volkswagen has finally revealed the official details surrounding its race-prepped Scirocco GT24 that will participate in the Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race in two days.

This incredible machine features a highly-modified version of the car’s standard 2.0-litre TFSI engine pumping out 242kW and maximum torque of 340Nm at 2,100rpm.

Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 -1Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 -2“The Scirocco GT24 with the blue-white finish sits so low on its extended wheel wells that a hand will not fit between the wheel arch and the tyre. Yet the race car remains unmistakeably a Scirocco from every angle. Just even wider, even longer and even lower,” says Volkswagen Chairman for Development Dr Ulrich Hackenberg

Power is transferred to the front wheels through VW’s 6-speed DSG dual clutch gearbox, identical to the transmission used in the road-going model.

The interior has been entirely stripped down and fitted with a full roll-cage, Recaro racing seats with five-point harnesses and a competition steering wheel - adding up to a total weight reduction of 178kg. The car will be driven by a team of racers including rally world champion Carlos Sainz and Hans-Joachim Stuck, three-time winner of the 24-hour Nürburgring race.

2008 Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance

VW hasn't released any info on the car you see here, which is called the Golf GTI Performance design study, so we'll call it like we see it. A black-and-copper checkered flag motif adorns the hatch, which is enhanced with a widebody kit, lowered suspension, and the expected wheel/tire upgrade. Out back, the GTI's rear bumper cover is covered with more grillework than you'll find on the rump of a Lamborghini Gallardo.

2008 Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance-12008 Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance-2A pair of giant exhaust outlet cutouts are also built into the corners. And speaking of Lamborghinis, VW has fitted the Golf GTI Performance with the dreaded "Lambo doors," which look predictably ridiculous here. The exterior color scheme carries through to the passenger cabin, which gets a 2+1 sport seating arrangement and what appears to be a substantial audio system install. Not our cup 'o tea, but it'll probably go over very well with the VW tuners who take part in the WörtherSEMA... er.. Wörthersee Tour.

2009 Mercedes G-Class comes in for subtle revisions, more power

The Mercedes G-Class is like the tux and tails -- its remains in vogue no matter what's happening in the world around it. And like the tux, it looks pretty much like it did when it first arrived, and changes to it still don't come quickly.

2009 Mercedes G-ClassFor the '09 model, the G has been given Mercedes' new corporate face, so you can better associate it with that CL65 you've got parked next to it in the garage. The big news, though, is in the engine bay. The base V8 engine gets a whopping 90-horsepower bump from 292 to 382. Torque also gets seriously goosed from 336 ft-lb to 391. The boosted V8 and the AMG G55 get a much more modest boost of 7 horsepower for an even 500.

Otherwise, the squared one gets new wheels and electronics, including a new Telematics system. There is no word yet on whether the celebrity chariot will come to the U.S., but we're sure Britney really wants one.

2008 AC Schnitzer Mini Cooper S Clubman

(from AC Schnitzer Press Release) It might not transport washing machines, but it's got a big heart.

The name "MINI“ says it all: Physically, the Clubman is not one of the biggest out there, but it's got a bigger heart than any other estate. And now AC Schnitzer provides that final endorphin surge. With its new front spoiler, giving it a harder look than standard, the Cooper S Clubman doesn't just catch the eye but demands respect. In terms of driving dynamics, the agile cornering master shouldn't be underestimated. Especially not when fitted with the AC Schnitzer spring kit or even the height-adjustable racing suspension made in Aachen. The subtle lowering flatters the well-honed figure of the Clubman. The bonnet with its striking power dome hides real muscle. After the AC Schnitzer performance training, the Cooper S develops 226 HP/ 166 kW and a torque of up to 285 Nm. Gas and away! But with spirited driving, don't forget: secure your load first!

2008 AC Schnitzer Mini Cooper S Clubman-12008 AC Schnitzer Mini Cooper S Clubman-2An optional limited slip differential (up to maximum 75 percent) developed by the renowned BMW tuning house ensures that the raw engine power is always applied to the right wheel when cornering and not lost through the exhaust. Even the exhaust gas flow plays a dual role of utility and aesthetics: Not only does it drive the turbo, but the AC Schnitzer twin sports rear silencer plays an almost orchestral note. The musical masterpiece with its chromed tailpipes is also a top level eyecatcher. Like the perfectly styled alloy wheels specially designed for the MINI in Aachen. Variants available are the Bicolor wheel Mi2 in 7.5 x18" and the Mi1 in the classic AC Schnitzer look in 7.5 x 17". And naturally the passionate MINI fan wants the right accessories in the interior too. Like the attractive controls and sports pedals of aluminium - naturally from AC Schnitzer.

2008 Scuderia Bizzarrini p538 Barchetta Prototype

(from Kevin Gallahan of Arbitrage Project) 2 years ago, Cobra International Co., Ltd. and Kevin Gallahan, announced the start of production of the Cobra Limited Edition, Arbitrage GT. A lightweight component sports car made almost entirely of carbon fiber.

Then 8 months ago a great opportunity presented itself. Well into the construction of the Arbitrage GT platform, The Cobra/Arbitrage team took the opportunity to join together with Mr. Giotto Bizzarrini to bring back a modernized version of the Bizzarrini P538. Because of the obvious historical opportunity, the original Arbitrage GT has been put on the back burner while the Cobra/Arbitrage team presses on to finish the first four Bizzarrini cars within this year. Chosen as the lead designer for the New Scuderia Bizzarrini P538, Mr. Shultze has provided the Cobra/Arbitrage team the design visualization used as the foundation for the project. Due to safety concerns of the low roadster windshield, the design has changed to accommodate a full windshield with front rollover support and the comfort of a removable carbon hardtop. Throughout the design process, Mr. Bizzarrini was involved until he approved the final design. In Giotto’s own words, “Incredible. It really communicates my style and character, very rare!”

Interior Design
Silapakorn University, founded in 1943 by an Italian, Mr. Corrado Feroci, was enlisted to design the interior for the Scuderia Bizzarrini P538 through the Automotive Design Faculty. The result is stunning with warm, rich leather, accenting the full carbon monocoque of the P538. A touch screen interface controlling most of the cars features and classic analog main gauges, bring to life the old with the new.

Chris Evans buys 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder for $11 million!

Talk about being in the news and making news! As rare as that is, Broadcaster Chris Evans did just that when he paid £5.5 million ($107, 591, 059 USD) for a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder - a new world record price for a car at auction. The 42-year-old multi-millionaire bought the car at a Ferrari sale at Maranello, Italy. The dark blue supercar used to belong to James Coburn, star of The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape, who died in 2002. Coburn, who appeared in more than 100 films, bought the car second-hand in 1964. Other leading Hollywood actors including Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood also owned similar cars.

1961 Ferrari 250 GT California SpyderIt's not the first time Evans has splashed the cash on fancy cars. In 2000 he famously bought a Ferrari for his future wife Billie Piper, the day after they met - and filled it with roses.

1957 Chrysler Diablo Concept Car To Be Auctioned Off

The one-of-a-kind 1957 Chrysler Diablo concept car is unlike anything I've ever seen. It's a long sleek convertible which will be auctioned off at Monterey's famed classic car weekend this August by RM Auctions. The Diablo is one hot devil car, note the little pitchfork on the side . It was conceived by Chrysler's design head, Virgil Exner and built by Italian coachbuilder Ghia on a 1955 Chrysler 300 series chassis and Chysler invested over $250,000 in the project back then. It was a featured concept car for the 1957 US auto show circuit. At 22 feet in length this one must be a little difficult to take around corners. The car has been in the care of one owner for 25 years. It is estimated to sell for $2.5 to $3 million.

1957 Chrysler Diablo-11957 Chrysler Diablo-2The ultra-rare Diablo will join several other European styled sports and racing cars and several classic American luxury automobiles at RM Auctions' Monterey auction "We have assembled the greatest collection of sports and classic cars ever brought together on the Monterey Peninsula," said Ian Kelleher, Managing Director of RM Auctions. "The Diablo is simply the holy grail of all concept cars in its era. Its upcoming auction in Monterey has received considerable international interest due to its rarity and the fact that concept cars are a featured highlight of this year's world famous Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance," he added.

Admission to the Sports & Classics of Monterey is $40 per person and an auction catalog is available for an additional $100 including shipping and handling within North America.

Holden to build small car

GM Holden will possibly follow Ford down the path of diversifying local production by adding a small car to its local build program in the future.

A decision will be made in the next two to three years on the product mix of vehicles that GM Holden will build in Australia and a car other than the Commodore is likely to be added to the production mix.

HoldenIn Melbourne for a series of high level meetings with senior Asia Pacific GM executives, GM Group vice president and president GM Asia Pacific, Mr Nick Reilly, told a media briefing that GM Holden could build a smaller cars alongside the Commodore at the company’s production plant at Elizabeth, near Adelaide, in South Australia.

Mr Reilly said GM Holden had come through a particularly tough couple of years as the Australian car market had made an irreversible change away from a predominantly large car market.

“That change has happened and I don’t see it being reversed,” he said, acknowledging, perhaps for the first time publicly, that GM Holden faces a very different future.

Mr Reilly said, “I would like to make that decision in the next two to three years, not really before that because we also have to know what the long term outlook is for our current products, especially those in export markets, are those markets going to stay with those products or not.”

Questioned about how Australian production of a smaller car would fit in with the company’s current policy of building its smaller cars for the region at GM-DAT in South Korea he said there would not be duplication.

Gemballa Avalanche 600 GT2 EVO

The German tuning firm is offering a new kit for both the 997 Porsche GT2 and its all-wheel-drive sibling, the Porsche Turbo, in the form of the Avalanche 600 EVO. As it's name would imply, Gemballa has coaxed 600 hp (not to mention 619 lb.-ft. of torque) from Porsche's turbocharged flat-six through the use of a new intercooler, race exhaust and a retuned ECU. The dash to 62 mph is dispatched in 3.5 seconds and the top speed has been increased to 199 mph.

Gemballa Avalanche 600 GT2 EVO-1Gemballa Avalanche 600 GT2 EVO-2To compliment the 911's newfound power, Gemball has fitted its Avalanche body kit, which includes a new hood, front spoiler and bumper, EVO wing and a host of air inlets and outlets. The stock suspension has been pulled in favor of a coilover setup hidden behind 405 mm front and 380 mm rear discs and Gemballa "Racing Black Edition" wheels sized 20x9-inches in front and 20x11.5-inches out back. Aluminum pedals and door plates are available to spruce up the interior, along with leather, carbon and alacantara trim, new carpet and a 340 mm steering wheel with optional "F1" paddle shifters.

Alfa Brera S

Alfa Romeo handed over its Brera to Prodrive, which has extensively honed the hot hatch into what's being called the Brera S. Prodrive fit the new Brera S with Eibach coil springs and Bilstein dampers, and then conducted extensive testing to find the right balance of spring and damper rates for sharper handling without ruining the ride. The steering was also tweaked to take advantage of the car's faster reflexes, and 8C Competizione-inspired lightweight 19-inch alloy wheels wearing Pirelli rubber keep the car affixed to terra firma.

Alfa Brera SAlong with lighter wheels, hollow anti-roll bars and aluminum suspension components further reduce the car's weight below the rest of the Brera range. Exterior mods are minimal, but the exhaust has been reworked and is capped with chrome tips featuring Prodrive's logo, and there are now Prodrive-branded mud flaps up front and either 'S' or 'SV6' badges on the C-pillar. The Brera S has also been fitted with new seats that, along with the dashboard, door panels, steering wheel and gear shift, feature red stitching.

There are drilled aluminum pedals for your footsies and a limited-edition Brera S aluminum plate featuring the flags of each company's home country (Italy and Britain) is located in the headrest recess. The Brera S package can be had with either the 2.2 JTS model powered by a 185bhp four-cylinder or the 3.2 JTS V6 powered by a 260bhp V6, though only 500 will be made. We'd love to have one but suspect they'll all be acquired by the time Alfa Romeo gets around to selling cars in the U.S. again.

Audi A3 TDI Clubsport Quattro

Audi has concluded a fine trifecta of diesel-powered show vehicles with the introduction of its latest, the A3 TDI Clubsport Quattro. First there was the Q7 V12 TDI shown at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show that could haul people or tree stumps with equal aplomb. Then there was the oil-burning supercar, the R8 V12 TDI, shown at this year's Detroit show. Finally we have something a bit more relatable for the masses in the A3 TDI Clubsport Quattro.

Audi A3 -1Audi A3 -2Audi A3 -3Rather than relying on Audi's venerable V12 TDI, this smallest of the three more than makes do with a 2.0L four-cylinder turbodiesel generating 221 hp and 332 pound-feet of torque. It's got adjustable everything on the fly and some killer good looks inspired by Audi's DTM race car to get by on. Ingolstadt has seen fit to grace us with 18 more high-res images of the A3 TDI Clubsport Quattro.

Don't be fooled, though. Half of the pics are heavily photoshopped versions of the studio shots in which the car is placed on track, but that doesn't mean they all don't deserve a look see. The car itself will officially debut at the Lake Wörther Tour in Austria later this month, but we're pretty sure it'll be doing duty as desktop wallpaper on many computers before then.

2008 Chrysler 300-Series Bottom Line

Looking at the 2008 Chrysler 300, it's easy to say that this car is one of the best things to come out of the troubled Mercedes-Benz/Chrysler relationship. Introduced in 2005, the Chrysler 300 re-introduced Americans to a domestically-built, full-size, rear-wheel-drive sedan. The car was an immediate hit.

2008 Chrysler 300-Series2008 Chrysler 300 hits the streets with several major improvements for the year. Starting with the exterior, you'll find new front and rear fascias, a new grille and taillamps. These in no way impair the 300's retro-modern style.

Inside, the 300 gets a new set of instruments and a revised dash, along with new door trim panels and a reorganized center console. New soft-touch materials, new upholstery, and a relocated cruise control stalk also make the cut for 2008.

The standard engine on the rear-drive 300 is a 2.7-liter V-6 engine providing 178 hp. A four-speed automatic transmission is standard, but curiously, anti-lock brakes are not (it should be standard). A 3.5-liter, 250-horsepower V-6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission comes with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel-drive Touring models and the Limited package. The 300C comes with the 5.7-liter, 340-horsepower HEMI V-8, five-speed automatic and either rear- or all-wheel drive. The romp' em-stomp' em SRT8 version of the 300C continues for '08, offering a 425-horsepower 6.1-liter HEMI V-8, sport suspension, 20-inch rims, and other upgrades.

On the road, the 2008 Chrysler 300 delivers a good driving experience from its rear-wheel-drive chassis. For Chrysler, 2008 models differ considerably in ride comfort. Base, Touring, and Limited 300 editions offer a softer ride. The 300C and the 300 SRT8 target the performance enthusiasts with their high-horsepower HEMI engines and stiffer suspensions. Stepping up to the 300 SRT8 nets drivers muscle car performance of sub-14 second quarter mile times and a top speed of over 150 mph.

As you'd expect, traction control and side and curtain airbags are optional. (Fitted with the optional passive safety devices, the 300 performed well in government crash tests.) Less plebeian options include a Bluetooth connection that features iPod connectivity; a six-disc changer; a MyGIG audio entertainment system; a Boston Acoustics speaker package; Sirius BackseatTV; remote start; and adaptive cruise control.

If you are going to consider the 2008 Chrysler 300C, the list of competitors changes dramatically. With its HEMI V-8, tighter suspension, and premium interior, the 300C is a legitimate alternative to Cadillac's CTS and STS. The Chrysler's driving dynamics and quality are also comparable to the BMW 5-Series and Audi A6. When one remembers that the 300 was developed when Chrysler was owned by Mercedes-Benz, understanding how the 300C could be so good is less of a surprise and more of a reasonable conclusion.

Lamborghini Gallardo and Matching Chopper Hit the Streets in Miami

2008 Ford Australia FPV GT-P and GT

(from Ford Press Release) Building on the strong heritage of the GT nameplate, Ford Performance Vehicles’ new 315kW GT-P and GT deliver the latest evolution of V8 powered vehicles that boast impressive performance and outstanding driving dynamics.

2008 Ford Australia FPV GT-P -12008 Ford Australia FPV GT-P -2“The new GT range has been fully engineered and designed to incorporate the latest in performance engineering, as well as significant ride and handling advancements,” Ford Performance Vehicles General Manager Rod Barrett said. “Not only are the new GT and GT-P the most powerful V8s we’ve ever built, but they also deliver the ideal combination of high performance, driveability and fuel efficiency.”

The GT-P and GT are powered by high performance 5.4 litre quad-cam 32 valve V8 engines that produce a maximum power output of 315kW at 6500 rpm and maximum 551Nm of torque at 4750 rpm.

“Drivers of the GT will notice improved vehicle acceleration and overall driveability, along with a smoother idle and a better engine note.” Importantly, the increased power does not compromise on fuel economy and in automatic guise; the FPV GT-P and GT boast fuel economy figures of 14L/100km, a decrease in fuel consumption of 4.8 percent over the previous model.

Complementing the increased power is FPV performance independent double wishbone front suspension and performance Control Blade Independent Rear Suspension (IRS).Matched to the performance suspension is a Brembo brake package with 355 x 32mm cross-drilled and ventilated front rotors with 4-piston calipers and 328 x 26mm rear rotors with single red piston caliper.

In another first for FPV, owners will have the option of the performance TR6060 six-speed manual transmission, or the ZF six-speed high-torque automatic transmission with Sequential Sports Shift at no extra cost.

Recommended retail pricing starts from $65,990 for the GT and $75,990 for the GT-P.
Both model variants, along with the rest of the new FPV FG range will be on sale nationally from June 2008.

“The Premium Brake Package delivers FPV a competitive advantage over our direct competitor as they do not offer 6-piston brakes across their range,” Ford Performance Vehicles General Manager Rod Barrett said.

“The GT E is a combination of luxury V8 and executive racer. It’s for those who want the power and sound of a high-performance vehicle without the overt styling and bright colours.”

2008 Ford Australia FPV F6

(from Ford Press Release) With an awesome 310kW of power, Ford Performance Vehicles’ (FPV) new turbo-charged F6 sedan is one of the best performing six-cylinder vehicles on the Australian market.

“The F6 is a phenomenal car with performance equal to or better than many European sports cars, but at a fraction of the price,” Ford Performance Vehicles General Manager Rod Barrett said. “This is the ultimate driver’s car with a fantastic combination of performance and dynamics making it an amazing car to drive.”

Ford Australia-1Ford Australia-2Powered by the high performance 4.0 litre turbo-charged DOHC 24 valve in-line six, the F6 produces maximum power of 310kW at 5500 rpm and maximum torque of 565Nm across the range from 1950 to 5200 rpm.

To achieve the significant 40kW increase, FPV engineers strengthened the piston design and cranked up the boost. A new intake system has improved airflow from the air intake to the engine head inlet, which substantially reduces pressure drop without a loss of boost capability.

“Importantly, while we’ve delivered a vehicle with impressive power and torque figures, we haven’t compromised on driveability and fuel efficiency,” said Barrett.

The F6 boasts fuel consumption figures of 12.3L/100km in manual transmission and 12.1L/100km in automatic guise, a seven percent auto and nine percent manual increase in fuel efficiency over the previous model. In another first for FPV, owners will have the option of the performance TR6060 six-speed manual transmission or the ZF six-speed high-torque automatic transmission with Sequential Sports Shift at no extra cost.

Matching the increased power is a premium FPV performance brake package, featuring 335x32mm front rotors with Brembo four piston calipers and 328x26mm rear rotors with single red piston caliper.

The recommended retail price for the F6 is $65,990 and will go on sale nationally from June 2008.

Audi TT Clubsport

Here’s one Audi TT that’s really mean and roofless! Our spies have the first pictures of the stunning new Clubsport version of the stylish German roadster. The special, stripped-out model boasts aggressive new looks and a powerful 300bhp motor.

As you can see, the newcomer is showroom-ready and takes its design cues from the concept that wowed crowds at the Essen Motor Show, Germany last November.

Audi TT Clubsport-1Audi TT Clubsport-2As a result, the Clubsport will certainly turn heads. At the front there is a deeper front bumper than the standard car, while bulging wheelarches and deep side skirts feature down the sides.

But the big news is above the waistline. Like the classic Porsche Speedster of the Fifties, the drop-top Audi gets a chopped down windscreen and distinctive sloping slide glass. Behind the cockpit are rollover hoops for driver and passenger, while the cover for the fabric hood features eye-catching ‘speed’ bubbles.

Underneath the exciting bodywork is a turbocharged 2.0-litre motor from the S3 hatchback, tuned to deliver 300bhp. Connected to the firm’s grippy Quattro all-wheel drive transmission it promises to offer blistering performance.

No launch date has yet been revealed, but expect to see the first production examples appear later this year.

Ford Mondeo 2.2 TDCi Titanium X

Ford is at the head of the pack when it comes to diesels. Its excellent selection of TDCi engines already covers all the bases, as it includes 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0-litre units – and now the range has been boosted by a revised version of the powerful 2.2-litre.

The new powerplant goes on sale this month and appears in the S-MAX and Galaxy people carriers, as well as the acclaimed Mondeo. The engine will also interest hot hatch fans, too, as it could even find its way under the bonnet of the recently facelifted Focus, as Ford looks to compete with SEAT’s oil-burning Leon FR.

Ford Mondeo 2.2 TDCi Titanium X-1Ford Mondeo 2.2 TDCi Titanium X-2The big question is, does the latest diesel maintain the reputation of the firm’s previous TDCi powerplants? These engines can rightly claim to have transformed Ford’s reputation – before the original 1.8-litre version was introduced in the first-generation Focus, the blue oval sat very firmly at the bottom of the oil-burning pile. So the newcomer has a lot to live up to.

It certainly gets off to a good start, producing 173bhp and a superb 400Nm of torque. Those figures are up 20bhp and 40Nm respectively on the outgoing 2.2-litre, and provide the Mondeo with excellent straight-line performance. The engine debuts in a fresh flagship for the range, badged the Titanium X Sport (see Page 17), but Zetec and Titanium X models will also be made available. In five-door guise, it completes the sprint from 0-60mph in 8.4 seconds on the way to a 139mph top speed.

Importantly, the 2.2-litre is smooth and refined, and economy hasn’t suffered, either. The unit is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, and is capable of returning 45.6mpg.

What’s more, it emits only 165g/km of CO2. That places the flagship diesel in road tax band D, which will make it a popular choice with business users and private buyers alike.

When it comes to equipment, the Titanium X has got just about everything you’ll need. A six-disc in-dash CD autochanger, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, automatic headlamps and dual-zone climate control all feature on the car’s generous standard equipment list.

Ford’s gutsy five-cylinder petrol engine is also availble in the Mondeo, but the superior economy and strong performance of the 2.2 TDCi make the diesel a more sensible alternative for enthusiastic drivers.

Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI

It takes a lot of confidence and a very straight face to call your new car the Superb. In the Thirties, Skoda used the name on a luxury saloon, but when the Czech firm’s Volkswagen Passat-based executive appeared wearing the same badge in 2002, the world did a double take. For a company that had only just shaken off its cheap and not-very-cheerful image, this seemed rather ambitious to say the least! But the Superb sold well. Now, six years after it arrived, a replacement is here.

Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI-1Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI-2And it’s a luxury saloon with a difference – a full-size hatchback with a boot that opens separately. The rear hatch has electro-mechanically locking hinges halfway along its length. On the bottom edge are two buttons. The one on the left pops the bootlid, but if you press the other first and wait for the high-level brake light indicator to stop flashing, the left-hand button opens the entire hatchback. It sounds contrived, but works fairly well when access via the bootlid is re-stricted, even if it is slow to operate.

Elsewhere, the Superb mixes old and new Passat platforms, plus parts from the current Octavia. The big news is that Skoda expects to sell a high proportion of 4x4 variants, so the rear axle comes from VW’s 4MOTION system. The two-wheel-drive versions also get a new axle which is claimed to produce a quieter, more comfortable ride.

It’s a not particularly distinguished-looking car, but inside the Superb is classy with smooth soft-touch plastics, a well organised and designed dash, and lots of cubbies in the front.Room in the rear is very generous, with more leg space than you’d ever need and thoughtful touches such as umbrellas that slot into the doors, a trick inspired by Rolls-Royce’s new Phantom. Headroom in the back is fine for anyone up to six feet tall.

Air-con is standard, while up to nine airbags and electronic stability control bolster safety. The Superb also debuts VW’s optional adaptive lighting system. As well as illuminating round corners, it extends the beam spread at low speed and increases the range as the pace picks up.

Three petrol engines will be on sale from launch: 123bhp 1.4 and 158bhp 1.8 four-cylinder units, plus a 256bhp 3.6-litre V6. There will also be three four-cylinder turbodiesels: a 103bhp 1.9, 138bhp 2.0 and a 167bhp 2.0-litre. The most powerful oil-burner is the latest twin-cam, four-valve, common-rail powerplant from VW, as used in the new Audi A4.

Skoda thinks that the single-cam, 138bhp turbodiesel option will be the most popular. It comes with six-speed manual or optional six-speed twin-clutch DSG semi-automatic. Either gearbox works well with the refined engine, which provides brisk acceleration and low noise.

Jaguar posts first sales rise in almost 2 years

For decades, Ford has carried Jaguar like an 800 lb guerrilla on the company's back. And just as Ford is able to unload the money-burning British marque, the leaping cat responds by posting its first sales increase in two years. Jaguar's April sales were up a ridiculous 69.6% in Europe, and while Automotive News somehow gives credit for this sales success to Tata Motors, it likely has a hell of a lot more to do with the all-new XF sedan. Jaguar has 18,000 customers in line for the new 4-door, which has given sales figures a big lift while helping other Jags leave the dealer lot, too. The slow-selling X-Type and the underrated XJ also got a lift from the extra showroom traffic.

JaguarAt first glance, it appears Ford's luck just can't change, as Jaguar is finally looking interesting just as the Blue Oval sells it off. What's more likely is that Ford wouldn't have gotten as much cash for the leaping cat if it couldn't dangle a hot-looking sedan to potential suitors.

2008 Holden Astra Review

These days, you expect small cars to be reasonably well behaved in the cornering department. The Astra CD with the optional 16” wheels does not disappoint. You can throw this car into corners and there is very little body roll meaning, the suspension has been well tuned.

As good as the handling is for a base model car, the overall ride is firm but never harsh. Those nasty little metal speed bumps in the shopping centres, produce no jarring or thump through the body of the car, whatsoever.

2008 Holden Astra-12008 Holden Astra-2I don’t recall holding back very often while in the Astra, given that the manual box encourages some, shall we say, enthusiastic driving. So, I was surprised to register just 7.6-litres/100kms which is near enough to the published consumption of 7.4-litres/100kms.

There are currently sixteen Astra variants to choose from at your Holden dealer, from the CD manual at $21,990 to the 2.2-litre TwinTop convertible with a 4-speed auto at $47,490. That may be a tad too many to choose from I suspect.

If you do go for the Astra CD, you might keep an extra $1500 in reserve for the “K” option pack. You get a decent set of 16” alloys along with Cruise Control and one-touch up/down windows all round, instead of front only. Well worth it, for the alloys alone.
The overall look remains contemporary, despite the fact that this “AH” generation Astra, has been around since 2004. Styled in Europe and made in Belgium, might explain some of that.

If you’re intending on using the Astra as a family run around, safety is reasonably well provided for with 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, Brake Assist (BA) and Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Driver, front passenger airbags and side impact airbags.

What you miss out on in the CD variant is full size curtain airbags and Electronic Stability Control, which is not so good. To get both of those features, you would need to step up to the CDTI or SRI. Boot space is both deep and wide and plenty big enough for a decent length trip away for three to four people and the rear seats are 60/40 split fold.

Fabulous Ferraris Go on the Block in Italy

An incredible collection of Ferrari's spanning 50-plus years of the company's history goes up for auction this Sunday at the Ferrari factory in Maranello. The stars of the sale are undoubtedly a 1961 250 GT SWB California Spyder that belonged to The Magnificent Seven star James Coburn, which is estimated at $4.6 - $5.9 million; and a 1964 250 Le Mans, est. $6.5 million - $7.4 million, making it one of the most expensive Ferraris ever to go on the block. There are plenty of other incredible machines on offer in the Ferrari: Leggenda e Passione event being staged by RM Auctions, however.

Ferrari-1Ferrari-2Ferrari-3Our personal favorite is this beautiful 1962 250 GT Lusso, the very first production unit and one of only three known examples raced, which is considerably cheaper at est. $1.2 million - $1.5 million. Other highlights include a 1990 Ferrari F40 Le Mans, est. $1.5 million - $2.1 million; a 2004 Enzo specially made for a member of a Middle Eastern royal family in a one-off shade of gray, est. $1.2 million - $1.5 million; and a dashing dark blue 1967 GTB/4, est. $1.2 million - $1.6 million. If you can't make it to Italy this weekend, LiveAuctioneers.com has opened bidding online, and will also carry streaming audio/video of the event.

Fiat 500 Abarth Assetto Corse-1Fiat 500 Abarth Assetto Corse-2It also receives a new, more aggressive front end with an aerodynamic chin spoiler, a white winged spoiler, dual exhaust outlets and Abarth branding.

The Abarth heritage is also expressed with a thunderbolt logo on the side representing the brand’s racing image and a red band and four white checkers on the roof, just as on the winning Abarth 850TC version of the 1960s.

Inside the ‘500 Abarth Assetto Corse’ gets the full race-spec roll-cage treatment, sports steering wheel, racing harness and an optimised racing position, shifting the racing seats closer toward the centre of the car.

The ‘500 Abarth Assetto Corse’ is powered by a 1.4-litre engine which has been boosted by a Garrett GT 1446 fixed geometry turbocharger developing 147kW at 6500rpm and 300Nm at 3000rpm. This is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, naturally.

Abarth has also provided a racing outfit for the drivers, including overalls, helmets, gloves and shoes, all branded with the ultra-new ‘Assetto Corse’ logo produced for the limited edition of the car.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX review

It’s still amazing to see just how far this car has come. Worlds apart from the doughy, tinny, average Lancer from which it takes its basis, the Evo easily justifies its 170% premium over the parent car. And the thing is it’s 170% better - no questions asked. But the real beauty is that it loses none of the practicality. The boot is still huge, the rear seat will actually house humans, and the front seats are just bliss. Plus, the visibility puts just about every other sports car to shame. It’s hard to imagine an easier car to see out of in all directions.

But where it differs dramatically is underneath. To house the all-wheel-drive system, the front and rear quarter panels have been replaced with flared versions. Three differentials supply power to all four wheels, and the SAYC (Super Active Yaw Control) system combines sensors and grip control to allow for mind-bending cornering. And this where the Evo IX is probably the most impressive.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX -12008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX -22008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX -3Slewing into a corner, you’ll notice that the steering is super reactive. The slightest movement off centre, and your lateral inclination is apparent. The feel is probably a bit dumbed down, but there’s enough torque-steer and kickback to let you know what’s happening underneath, which along with slight tramlining on poor surfaces, means the feedback you do get is related to your speed anyway.

We’ve found that out of the three settings - Tarmac, Gravel, and Snow - for the Active Centre Differential (ACD), that Gravel is the best for wringing as much speed as possible out of the Evo. Tarmac is well balanced, and Snow tends to understeer too much. But Gravel sends most of the power to the rear, meaning when you think you’ve run out of grip, you haven’t.
Simply hang on for the ride of your life, and remain committed to the corner. An initial understeer tendency is initially offputting, however keep your foot buried, and the torque is shuffled to the rear, where the back is brought around, and the front merely determines the line (while adding more grip). The reward is the car resting on the outside rear tyre, and oversteering through the exit. Fun? You bet. But fast? Yes, it’s that too.

The Evolution IX is one of those cars that you have to experience more than once. The purity of the drive experience isn’t whitewashed by electronic wizardry. You still have to work hard to get a result. But the result you do get is more than your senses can handle at first go. If this is what the IX is like, we can’t wait to drive the Evo X when it is released in a few short weeks.

Citroën C4 Picasso diesel price match

In the past, diesel-powered cars have never really found their place in Australia. Both the cars and the fuel which they ran on were more expensive than the petrol alternative - a trend which has usually been reversed in overseas markets.

However in more recent times, diesel cars have become increasingly popular thanks to the soaring price of oil and a growing awareness of environmental issues.

Citroën C4 PicassoCitroën has taken the first step and will now offer both the 2.0 litre petrol automatic and 2.0 litre HDi automatic variants of its C4 Picasso people mover for the same price until June.

With both models now carrying a price tag of just $39,990, this represents a saving of $4,000 for the diesel model.

According to VFACTS, private Passenger Car diesel sales rose by 50.6 percent, non-private by 64 percent and SUV diesels by 48.5 percent while petrol powered private car sales dropped by 5.0 percent.

Based on the award winning Citroën C4, the new C4 Picasso is only slightly larger than the typical hatchback, and with its diesel engine returns a remarkable 5.9 litres/100 km with emissions further enhanced by a standard particulate filter. The C4 Picasso also has the highest rating for safety, the Euro-NCAP five star rating.

Nissan 370Z official image leaked

An image has appeared on the web purportedly that of the new Nissan 370Z, captured at a recent Nissan event with a camera phone.

Nissan 370ZWhile the image isn’t the best quality, the front of the 370Z at least seems to retain much of the original 350Z styling with only subtle design changes made to the headlights and front bumper.

Curiously, the new 370Z retains the unusual sideways door-handle which received much criticism on the 350Z - a flush GT-R style handle would have suited the new car far better.

The new model will share the same 246kW 3.7-litre V6 engine as the Infiniti G37 Coupe, hence the new 370Z namesake.

2008 Spada Vetture Sport Codatronca TS

(from Spadaconcept Press Release) After three months of tests and trials Spadaconcept the Italian design studio founded by Paolo Spada (former designer at Smart and Honda) together with his father Ercole, (former chief designer at Zagato and BMW), Domiziano Boschi (former Mc Kinsey) and Wojtek Sokolowski has launched the production of its supercar, the Spada TS Codatronca. With this car Spadaconcept cherishes and revives the important heritage of Ercole Spada and the philosophy which characterized each of his creations.

The company’s vision is centered on “functional design”, which, according to Ercole Spada, means to allow functionality of an object to express itself through its shape. Following this vision Spadaconcept came up with a genuinely breaking product, something bold an daring. Far from creating a show car where anything is allowed, Spadaconcept has worked within strict feasibility constraints in order to reach the quality standards of a niche, handcrafted production, maximizing performance by introducing aerodynamic lines such to mould a light and essential body. The result is an extremely stable and manageable car, able to achieve good racing performances by exploiting at the best the power of its engine, with an original and nimble shape and essential but elegant interiors.

2008 Spada Vetture Sport Codatronca TS-12008 Spada Vetture Sport Codatronca TS-2The first version, named TS (Turismo Sportivo), is a car with an aspired engine of more than 600horse with race performances. Despite the focus at Spadaconcept wasn’t on “pure” power but rather on aerodynamics, lightness and handling, this car can still reach more than 340 km/h and complies with the FIA GT1 regulations. Care for environmental issues has resulted in SpadaVettureSport’s decision to add to the menu an ad hoc “converter kit” which allows fueling the car with E85 green fuel, with a slight increase in torque and power.

With this new sport car Spadaconcept aims at reviving the philosophy that inspired Ercole Spada’s past models, in an attempt to combine aesthetics with functionality and racing performances. This new model is the latest evolutionary step of the truncated tail – “coda tronca” in Italian. The typical and aerodynamic shape which Spada had introduced with the Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ, TZ1 and TZ2 in the 60’s gives this new car unique and nimble lines which bring in lightness and aerodynamics improving performances.

In the present of Spadaconcept there is a strong focus on the core business consulting and design of niche cars, motorbikes and accessories like helmets, seats, etc. but looking to the future, the company has started to explore new fields, especially bioethanol powered cars and it is currently working in the development of an Environmental Friendly Vehicle (EFV).

Announced at this year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit that it will become a production vehicle, the Soul was originally unveiled as a concept car during the 2006 Detroit show. A collaborative effort between Kia’s design studio in California and design studio in Korea, it will go on sale at the end of 2008.

2006 Kia Soul Concept-12006 Kia Soul Concept-2“The Soul’s aggressive and youthful styling is raising the bar for vehicles in its segment, and we are excited that it will be joining the ever-expanding Kia line-up in 2008,” said Len Hunt, executive vice president and COO of KMA. “The flexibility, function and utility this vehicle provides, as well as its dynamic appearance, further demonstrate Kia’s commitment to producing vehicles that create passion with consumers.”

2009 Ferrari California

(from Ferrari Press Release) New Ferrari California revealed: a hugely versatile, innovation-packed GT

Maranello, May 13th 2008 - The first official photographs have been published of the Ferrari California, the latest addition to the new generation of Ferraris launched in 2004 with the 612 Scaglietti and added to more recently with the 430 Scuderia.

The Ferrari California joins the Prancing Horse's 8-cylinder family which has always been defined by power and performance. It also flanks the flagship 612 Scaglietti in the prestige sporty Grand Tourer segment.

2009 Ferrari California-12009 Ferrari California-22009 Ferrari California-3The new Ferrari California will satisfy even the most demanding of owners in term of its superb vehicle dynamics and driving pleasure. The new model will be available exclusively as a convertible with a folding hard top. Both chassis and bodywork are aluminium, in line with the rest of the current range. The California will be powered by a new V8 engine mounted for the first time in the marque's history in the mid-front position.

In line with Ferrari tradition, the new model also features several innovations. Apart from its folding hard top, these include the original 2+ concept which guarantees exceptional versatility of use in the rear of the car. The California's 4,300 cc V8 engine features direct fuel injection and a "flat" crankshaft. It generates 460 CV at 7,500 rpm with a torque curve that enhances vehicle dynamics and provides maximum driving pleasure which is typical for Ferrari.

In addition to sporting the marque's classic styling cues, the cabin has also been beautifully trimmed using quality materials by Ferrari's own skilled artisans. New accessories and equipment, such as the seats, steering wheel, instrument panel and infotainment system, together with optimised aerodynamics ensure that this is a highly ergonomic and enjoyable car to drive regardless of whether the top is up or down.

The Ferrari California is aimed at owners who desire a car which embodies everything the Prancing Horse represents in terms of sporty design and innovation, but also seek a car with greater versatility than ever. The car will be officially unveiled to the public at the Paris International Car Show. However, over the coming weeks, new photographs and further details about it will also be published.

2008 AC Schnitzer BMW 1-Series Convertible

(from AC Schnitzer Press Release) Soft on top and hard beneath: The new 1-series Cabrio by AC Schnitzer

Viewed from its roof construction, the new 1-series Cabrio is a classic softy. But under its soft shell lurks a hard masculine cornering machine which isn't pushed aside by anyone: especially in the AC Schnitzer version. As honed as a high performance athlete, the car cuts a fine figure even in the car park. The Aachen-based BMW-tuners have transplanted the muscles visually to the right places. In the end, the vehicle is an agile sprinter and not a bodybuilder who can scarcely move for power. At first glance, the new front skirt strikes you - it is less rounded than standard and runs into a slight taper.

2008 AC Schnitzer BMW 1-Series Convertible-12008 AC Schnitzer BMW 1-Series Convertible-2This, in combination with the diagonal grille insert, ensures a far more dynamic appearance. And naturally the Cabriolet not only has a neat front, but also a strong rear: The AC Schnitzer rear skirt lip or insert (for M-Technik version) provides an extra cross contour in comparison with the original, and hence a more "powerful" look. Underneath, a diffuser element highlights the sporting heritage of the vehicle. The final touch is given by the chromed tailpipe trim in "Racing" design, available for the 118i, 120i, 125i, 120d and 123d.

The fact that the sporting appearance is more than just Show & Shine becomes evident to the driver from a glance in the rearview mirror. Because the car behind grows smaller at record speed when you put your foot to the floor. In both petrol and diesel engine variants, the Aachen tuners inject any amount of power into the compact cabrio. Extra horsepower is available for the 135i, 120d and 123d. And because the standard speedo is sometimes overloaded with so much "unbridled" power, AC Schnitzer upgrades it to 320 km/h.

Weber 'Faster One' supercar concept - Video

The Swiss firm claims the F1 is capable of 420km/h (260.98mph) when unleashed under the proper circumstances. It gets there under power from a LS7 snatched out of a Corvette Z06 and then sandwiched between a pair of superchargers that drive output beyond 660kW (900hp). Strap that powerhouse to a 1,100kg (2,420lb) frame and the result is a power-to-weight ratio of just 1.67kg/kW (2.68lb/hp).

The rocket-like power gives similar acceleration - Weber claims 0-100km/h (62mph) takes just 2.5 seconds, while 200km/h (124mph) comes in 6.6 seconds, and 300km/h (186mph) takes just 16.2 seconds - from a standing start.

The Weber press note reads: “For attaining a speed of 400 km/h, an automobile must have favorable aerodynamic features. The body of the WEBER SPORTCARS faster one measures 204 centimeters wide and 115 centimeters high. It is structured using ultra-light yet super-strong carbon fiber. Also, another must-know fact is that state-of-the-art aerodynamics computer software and wind-tunnel testing were deputed to spruce the carbon-fiber shell for utmost directional constancy at the highest speeds.

The 2009 Volvo XC90 – a new band, more sport and more entertainment

The Volvo XC90 premium SUV has received several exciting updates for the 2009 Model Year, including a new lower CO2 figure for the D5 Geartronic1, the introduction of the sports-inspired R-DESIGN and new exterior colours, alloy wheels and options giving buyers more choice. The new 2009 Volvo XC90 is available to order now, with first cars arriving in June. Prices for the 2009 XC90 start at £32,845 for the D5 S.

2009 Volvo XC90 –1CO2 from G to F
The Volvo XC90 already boasts a CO2 figure of 219g/km for the manual 185 PS D5 diesel engine and now the best selling automatic version, the D5 Geartronic has a new tax-appealing figure. Now at 224g/km1, the Volvo XC90 is the only premium standard 7-seat SUV available which achieves a sub 225g/km figure in both manual and automatic transmissions.

The new CO2 figure means the D5 Geartronic engine falls below the key Band G threshold for Vehicle Excise Duty, saving new Volvo XC90 owners £570 in Vehicle Excise Duty2 over three years. This model will now also avoid the daily £25 London Emissions Related Congestion Charge (ERCC) which begins in October, saving owners several hundreds of pounds in annual congestion charges as well as qualifying for the 90% discount for London residents.

The R-DESIGN package comprises a specially tuned dynamic chassis, stiffer anti-roll bars, firmer shock absorbers and sport tuned speed-dependent steering. The shock absorbers have stiffer rebound rates and the anti-roll bars are stiffer (front +0.5mm; rear +1.0mm) to offer a high level of stability when cornering.

R-DESIGN adds a new dimension to the Sport styling with 19-inch alloy wheels as standard (with new 20-inch alloys an optional upgrade), quad exhaust pipes, skid-plate, R-DESIGN badge on the grille and rear view mirror caps in silk matt finish. To accentuate the sporty nature further and to create a sleeker appearance, the car is not fitted with roof rails, although these are still available as a no cost option.

Prices
The 2009 model year brings minimal price changes to the XC90, with some models increasing by up to £150 and others decreasing by £210, such as the D5 R-DESIGN.

Lexus IS facelifthybrid spy photos

European photographers took these photos of what appears to be a heavily disguised Lexus IS undergoing speed tests at the German Nürburgring. Although similar in shape to the current model, there are hints of differentiation, the current IS series, which in Australia only includes the IS250, has been on the market since late 2005 and should be getting ready for a facelift.

Given the heavy disguise it’s hard to tell whether the headlight and taillamps have changed, but the bulge on the bonnet leads us to believe the actual prototype is a test mule for an IS variant featuring Lexus’ Hybrid Synergy Drive.

Lexus IS -1Lexus IS -2The BMW M3 and Audi RS4 competitor, the Lexus IS-F should be arriving soon. The IS-F will pack a 5.0-litre V8, good for around 300kW. It will put its power down through the rear wheels using an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Lexus will also bring the IS coupe/convertible to Australia later in the year.

Toyota’s luxury arm is also working on a smaller and cheaper Lexus model to compete in the bottom end of the luxury market (against the 1-series). However that won’t be here for a few more years.

Mercedes-Benz Marks The Launch Of The New GLK With A European Design Competition

To celebrate the European launch of the new GLK this fall, Mercedes has announced today they'll be holding a special design competition centered around the SUV's groundbreaking styling. Titled "The design:project", the rules are simple. Six universities located in six European design capitals have been asked to put together an interdisciplinary team, who then have until the end of July to create various objects in different design areas, such as furniture, everyday objects and technical equipment. The designs must all be in line with an overarching theme, and they can be submitted in any form, including sketches, graphics, animations and models. The condition is that all objects and creations must be presentable in a surface area measuring 10 x 15 meters.

Mercedes-Benz GLKAs for the winner, the team that produces the most stringent interpretation of the creative leitmotif across all the design disciplines will be rewarded with a cash prize of €10,000, while a special prize of €5,000 for the most outstanding individual design, irrespective of the leitmotif, will also be presented.

You may be wondering how this affects you. The answer, ladies and gentlemen, is that in addition to the design competition, Mercedes is also offering you the chance to win a two-day trip to one of the aforementioned European design capitals, where you'll not only get a chance to visit in person one of the design studios, but you'll also get a chance to discover local architectural highlights, restaurants, clubs and bars.

2008 Aznom Chateau Mini

(from Aznom Press Release) Mini Chateau by Aznom: Pleasure, Emotion, Pragmatism, Elegance.

These are the basic items of the new interpretation of the Mini Clubman signed Aznom. Worthy heired of the legendary Mini Sassicaia dedicated to the most famous wine in the world, sold in 12 exclusives specimen so the new Mini Chateau is born, a Mini that, thanks to its name evokes the elegance of the world of the Grands Chateaux; for this reason in its car trunk has found place a 6 bottles (and chalices) winecellar completely caulked and shock absorbent; built up with the same wood and leather selected for the car.

2008 Aznom Chateau Mini-12008 Aznom Chateau Mini-2Concerning the inner features, the match of aged / gaucho leather and alcantara creates a warm vintage atmosphere that embraces the passengers in a special trip of elegance, emotion and tradition.

In order to make this car version really special, we chose to couple a more “classic” style leather with an unconventional/eccentric old-looking one. Regarding the car body, the exterior paint pearly-changeable brown has been matched with a sandy/gold metallic paint selected for the top, for part of bumpers and other details shaping up the whole car style creating an ideally separation between top and body, mostly thanks to the wide side windows that lightens the top part of the car. The really distinguishing element is the precious wood used internally and externally. Inside (glossy finished) for some details of dashboard and doors. Outside (mat and weather resistant finished) for the top part of back bumper, head lamps frame, underlining so the back doors, emblematic element, typical of the Mini Clubman version.

So, we wish in this way to dedicate to the legendary Mini Clubman a really brand-new interpretation, worthy of being its modern heiress.

The chosen alloy wheels TSW “Pace” are elegant and sporty same time, and thanks to the generous dimensions of 18” equipped with 205/40 tyres Yokohama S-Drive has been put a stress on the peculiar dynamic vocation that all along distinguishes the Mini style.

The Mini Chateaux will be realized in a limited edition of sole 12 really exclusive samples characterized by numbered labels completed with the name of the lucky owners.

2008 Saab 9-3

Tougher emissions and fuel economy regulations in Europe and the United States have forced Saab to put the brakes on development of the next-generation 9-3. The current Saab 9-3 is built on GM's Epsilon platform (shared with the Opel Vectra, Chevrolet Malibu, and Pontiac G6). The next-gen model was set to be based on the longer and wider GM Epsilon II platform (used for the 2009 Saab 9-5). However, Saab and parent company General Motors are considering radically downsizing the model to fit GM's upcoming 'Global premium compact' platform - a size rivaling the Audi A3.

2008 Saab 9-3GM design sources told Autocar that a smaller chassis would dictate new technologies to maximize interior room. These would include a slim modular roof assembly and slimmer doors with advanced side-impact technology. General Motors has also hinted that the new 9-3 could be manufactured in the United States. Many European automakers are feeling the impact a weak dollar is having on profits and, like BMW, are moving or increasing production in the States.

2008 Cheetah Roadster

(from Cheetah) Where Were You in '64?
If you were lucky enough to be at RoadAmerica's June sprints, you saw the only version of the Cheetah ever produced in a Roadster version handily win - and it did the same thing the next year, too. This, of course, was the legendary Cro-Sal Special, named for Gene Crowe, the car's mechanic and Ralph Salyer, owner and driver.

2008 Cheetah Roadster-12008 Cheetah Roadster-2The roadster's roots? Cockpit heat. To overcome it, Crowe - along with a couple of other modifications - cut the coupe's top off, creating the only Cheetah Roadster ever. As one racing historian noted, "That also solved the problem of unequal air pressure within the cockpit, which showed itself early in 1964 at Daytona when the doors and hood blew off the car . . . at over 200 mph." Inspiration has to come from somewhere. The Cheetah's history is incredible . . . the Roadster version was born of necessity and ingenuity, too.

2008 Carlsson CK50 Mercedes-Benz SL 500

(from Carlsson Press Release) Power-Roadster: Carlsson CK50

* Carlsson CK50 based on the SL 500 with 435 HP/600 Nm
* Top speed 293 km/h, acceleration 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds
* Intelligent electronic C-Tronic SUSPENSION lowering gear
* Light forged metal wheels from the 1/16 Ultra Light series

For the newly-arrived, comprehensively reworked Mercedes SL, Carlsson Autotechnik GmbH in Merzig can already offer an individualisation programme transforming the SL 500 into the Carlsson CK50.

Coming on strong: the Carlsson CK50 engine kit

2008 Carlsson CK50 Mercedes-Benz SL 500-12008 Carlsson CK50 Mercedes-Benz SL 500-2Specially developed by Carlsson for the current 5.5 Litre V8, the CK50 engine kit, which includes the adaptation of the electronic control unit, allows the elegant roadster to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds. Following their boost by Carlsson, the output and torque data are quite impressive: 435 HP/ 320 kW (standard model: 388 HP/ 285 kW) at 6000 rpm. The torque of the tuned V8 is 600 Nm/ 2800-4800 rpm (electronically regulated), the top speed is 293 km/h thanks to the Vmax delimiter, with acceleration from 0-100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds. In short, the CK50 engine kit has more than enough output and torque for any situation! Support for its output comes in the form of the CK50 kits exhaust gas system, which has been individually adapted to optimise the flow of exhaust gases. The exhaust gas back pressure is reduced with the help of sports middle and rear exhaust silencers made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel and developed by Carlssons own engineers. Four polished exhaust tailpipes bear witness to the additional performance of this SL.

Naturally, Carlsson can also provide the appropriate performance enhancements for versions of the SL with other engines in them extending right up to the CK65, which has over 700 HP and a torque of 1100 Nm. In all these performance enhancements, the Carlsson engineers are constantly on the lookout to ensure that the tolerance limits of the engine components are not exceeded, so as to avoid any damage. Equally, all engines that have been tuned by Carlsson still comply with all the regulations concerning exhaust fumes.

Tesla Roadster, European details more than 300 hp

The specs related to the Tesla Roadster destined for the European markets have been released and skimming the document there are plenty of surprises. The document, coming from the Norwegian importer, states that the little spider with the green spirit will have a capacity of more than 300 CV or 225 kw, and a red zone of 13,000 revs.

Tesla Roadster-1The updated model will be slightly different from the original with some aspects having been reviewed before sale in the US and Europe. The new transmission, created by Ricardo, is equipped with a single gear compared to the previous model (by Magna) with its two. The cooling system is also new and more efficient.

Returning to the numbers, the most notable are the four seconds acceleration from 0-100, the maximum speed of 200km/hr and the recharge time of four hours, with rapid recharge possible at much more brief times. The 250 cars destined for the old continent (at a price of 99,000 euro), will be available as a signature edition with new colors and numbered plates.

2008 Cheetah Coupe

(from Cheetah) In the 60s, it was Chevrolet's idea - and Bill Thomas' dream - to create a car that would challenge the Cobra. The result? The awe-inspiring Cheetah, born of vision and guts and a commitment to build a car that would shatter track records along with the Cobra's dominance. With storied race-car builders Don Edmunds and Don Borth, Bill Thomas built a car that in turn built a new story of speed. 185 mph at RoadAmerica. 215 mph at Daytona.

2008 Cheetah Coupe-12008 Cheetah Coupe-2Despite the small staff producing the car, the Cheetah, boasting shockingly good looks and unheard-of performance, developed a fanatical following. It didn't just turn heads at tracks: the street version brought envy to every neighborhood it called home. But sadly, it wasn't meant to be: Chevy pulled its support and, in a twist of unfriendly fate, fire destroyed the Cheetah factory. The dream ended, but the haunting question remained: What might have been?

With only 23 original Cheetahs ever produced, it's time for some company. Since the introduction of the new Cheetah Continuation Coupe in Arizona in early 2006, vintage racing enthusiasts are rekindling some of their most cherished memories: the thrilling 1964 racing season, when the Cheetah captured 11 wins (and Cheetah believers know it should have been many more).

You'll want to catch the Cat before it's gone. Like most truly great things in life, the Cheetah Continuation Collectible is being produced in limited quantities. And that means they're not going to last long. A chance to own - and truly savor - such a legendary part of auto racing history is an opportunity that doesn't come around very often. But, for now, The Cat is Back. And with it, your chance to relive the glory days of the Cheetah has finally arrived.

Seat Ibiza three doors in November and the Cupra in 2009

Confirmation of the production of the Seat Bocanegra Concept revealed at Ginevra has arrived. The prototype seen at the show previews the aspects of the next three-door Ibiza, expected for November with the name Sportcoupè: but especially it will have the black nose reflecting the mean look of the Cupra, 2009, which as a showcar makes itself noticed for its chrome finish.

Seat Ibiza three doors-1Seat Ibiza three doors-2The good news is that the Cupra will maintain most aspects of the Bocanegra such as the front air vent design. Designer Luc Donckerwolke, ex-Lamborghini, has declared that given the success won for the prototype, it would be unthinkable to change the series’ version.

The Cupra will be equipped with a 1.4 TFSI at 180 hp and the new DSG seven gears and together with the new Toledo will be the most important news in 2009. The Toledo will be based on the old Audi A4 series but dressed up in Seat style.

Ford Mondeo Titanium X Sport

When Ford starts talking about a 'visually exciting' new Mondeo with 'superb dynamics', a 'sportier new look' and 'aggressive styling', just two letters spring to mind: ST.But this isn't the Mondeo ST. This is the Mondeo Titanium X Sport, a new top-spec version of Ford's big rep favourite with a shiny new diesel engine and a few fresh bits of finery.

The engine sounds like a cracker: a 173bhp 2.2-litre turbodiesel which will see the Mondeo to 62mph in 8.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 139mph while still returning 45.6mpg and 165g/km of CO2.

Ford Mondeo Titanium X Sport-1Ford Mondeo Titanium X Sport-2Ford Mondeo Titanium X Sport-3The Titanium X Sport gets twin chrome tailpipes, fatter side skirts and some leather frippery on the inside, all of which combines to create a meaner-looking load lugger.

But it's no ST. Worse still, we're unlikely to see a properly hot Mondeo for a long while: Ford UK tells us that the Titanium X Sport is the sportiest Mondeo in the pipeline. Considering the Mondeo's capable chassis and decent handling, that's a pity.

Perhaps they'll just skip straight to the Mondeo RS instead. Wishful thinking? Us?

Mazda survey reveals pricing and packages for 2009 Mazda6

Mazda recently sent out a survey request to potential customers, the purpose of which was to allow these survey takers to build a 2009 Mazda6 with whatever options, packages and colors they wanted so that the automaker could gauge which will be most popular when the car goes on sale. Unfortunately, Mazda was smart and the survey can only be taken once, but one person recorded all the information he saw and posted it on the Mazda6club.com forum. His notes after the jump give us an idea of what trim levels, options and pricing will be available when the car does go on sale, though none of it is written in stone.

2009 Mazda6-12009 Mazda6-2It appears that the 2009 Mazda6 will be available in two basic versions: the Mazda6 i that comes with a 170-hp 2.5L four-cylinder with VVT and the more powerful Mazda6 s that's motivated by a 272-hp 3.7L V6. The Mazda6 i will be offered in SV, Sport, Touring and Grand Touring models, while the Mazda6 s will be available as Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. As far as pricing goes, the Mazda6 i SV kicks things off with a base price of $19,850 while the Mazda6 s Grand Touring tops the range with a base price of $29,150. That's quite a large range that should satisfy the wants and needs of most buyers, and features like Xenon headlamps, Bluetooth, a Blind Spot Monitoring system, rain-sensing wipers and wheels up to 18-inches in diameter should position the new Zoom-Zoom sedan well against its mid-size family sedan competition.

Mercedes C63 AMG - First drive

Auto Driven: Mercedes C 63 AMG
Models tested: Mercedes C 63 AMG Saloon, Mercedes C63 AMG Estate
Price as tested: £51,425
Range price: £51,425-£52,675
Insurance group range: 19A
Date and place tested: May 2008, Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground, Leicestershire

The C63 AMG boasts a seven-speed automatic gear box offering comfort, sport and manual settings and we work our way through each through the course of the day.

Mercedes C63 AMG -1Mercedes C63 AMG -2Comfort mode supplies swift, effective gear changes. Sport mode makes those changes 30 per cent quicker with a double-declutching function blipping the throttle when shifting down. (This both sounds good and carries safety benefits as stability is enhanced – in particular when entering a corner).

Paddle shift gears cut comfort gear change times in half and are great for the track – though switching to automatic means I am able to concentrate more on the steering and handling.

There are three ESP settings and we start the day with full ESP which ensures the car’s technology “steps-in” any time loss of control or stability seemed likely.

The Mercedes C 63 AMG is a monster of a car clothed within a respectable business suit – albeit one which gives fairly large clues as to its true identity.

(from Hamann Press Release) HAMANN sportivo - The lively tuning programme for the Fiat 500.

Normally HAMANN-Motorsport is renowned as a tuning company for BMW and for refining sinfully expensive luxury cars. But sometimes the Laupheim-based technicians move off the beaten tracks and devote themselves to something completely unexpected – in this case the Fiat 500. The HAMANN-technicians started with a lot of joy and enthusiasm for the cool little retro sports car and developed the extensive HAMANN sportivo–tuning programme. Striking 17-inch rims and a lively flag pattern optically emphasize the racy character of this little Italian. The strong sound of the HAMANN-sport exhaust system for the 1.4 litre petrol car also underlines this acoustically. A performance optimization for the diesel model, progressive chassis springs and a newly-developed braking system round out the racy appearance and provide a speedy joyride.

2008 Hamann Sportivo Fiat 500-12008 Hamann Sportivo Fiat 500-2The design wheel HM sportivo I stands for trendy mobile appearance and perfect handling. The matt black varnish rim in one piece has a diamond-polished outer edge and is offered in the size 7.0 x 17. HAMANN recommends matching tyres in the sizes 195/40 ZR17 or 215/34 ZR 17 by its technology partner Hankook. A complete wheel-set can be obtained from 1,420 Ђ. The HAMANN-set for lowering chassis leads to a further improvement in handling the car and ensures that the vehicle centre which is made up from four progressively spun springs is lowered by 30mm.

The increased performance by HAMANN costs 699 Ђ for the 1,3 Multijet 16V Fiat 500 diesel model. After re-programming the integrated control unit, the motor renders up to 90 hp / 66 kW at 4,000 r.p.m. (series: 75 hp / 55 KW) and a maximum torque of 230 Nm at 1,750 r.p.m. (series: 145 Nm at 1,500 r.p.m.).

Renault Megane scooped

The French revolution starts here! We've got the pictures that prove Renault is ready to reclaim its reputation as the world’s most daring designer of family cars. This is the new Mégane, revealed for the first time in all its glory. We’ve spied undisguised versions of both the three and five-door versions, which are being prepared at the firm’s HQ.

Renault Megane -1Renault Megane -2And our inside information also means we can reveal what drivers can expect from the line-up when it hits the UK early next year. With a sporty looking coupé and practical five-door hatch under dev-elopment, Renault plans to come out with all guns blazing in the fight against the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf. The range of head-turning cars also promises class-leading levels of equipment and refinement, too.

Due to make their public debut at the Paris Motor Show in October, the two models are inspired by the new Laguna, and use detailing first revealed by the Mégane concept, which Auto Express drove in Issue 1,006.

The three-door is a coupé and has a dramatic nose, tapered roof and sharply rising window line. At the rear, wide haunches and a steeply raked glass area provide a purposeful stance, which reflects the car’s promised handling prowess.

The five-door has a more conventional front, plus a larger glass area and bigger tailgate to improve practicality. The tail-lights are different, as is the rear bumper. The addition of a pair of back doors has altered the roofline to provide greater headroom for rear seat passengers.

Inside, flagship versions of both models get an upmarket interior which includes silver rimmed instruments, keyless go and satellite navigation.

An advanced airbag system is expected to complement a range of safety features that includes traction and stability control. Details of the engine line-up are not so clear, but both petrol and diesel powerplants will be available, including a 230bhp turbocharged Renaultsport version, which is designed to replace the performance oriented R27.

Prices for the newcomer are yet to be announced by the company. However, as both models will mark a major step forward in both design and engineering, a small increase is likely. Entry-level models should start from around £13,000.

Audi Asks Do You Have the Right Stuff

Have you got the stuff? Sure, you know how to pose. You can slam the throttle when the light turns green. And you can quote torque and horsepower with the best. But can you hold your own where it really matters?

If you think the answer is yes, you might want to sign up for the 2008 Audi Sports Car Experience.
