Audi Q5 Custom Concept images

Audi has released new official pics of the Q5 Custom Concept prior to the prototype’s presentation at the Worthersee Tour 2009 next weekend. The prototype is not so interesting for its look, but for the engine that they’ve put under the bonnet.

Audi Q5 Custom Concept-1Audi Q5 Custom Concept-2Currently absent from the Q5 range, the V6 3.0 litre TFSI is that of the Audi S4, brought from 333 to 408 hp for the occasion. This power will be managed by the S-Tronic seven-speed transmission, and the whole proposal has fans a-flutter.

The model proves that the possibility of an “S” version in the Audi SUV range is not so fantastical. This could also be a preview to the next RS4, currently oscillating between a V6 and V8. And given the closer relationships among the VAG cars, we could even see this engine on Volkswagen or Porsche models.

2009 ABT Audi Q5

(from ABT Sportsline Press Release) When the engineers and designers with ABT Sportsline intend to tune an SUV, you can be sure that the result will be an extraordinary vehicle. That has been the case with the Touareg, AS7 and Tiguan - and that will be continued with the new ABT Q5. The elegant crossover vehicle is by concept a premium model in the category of compact SUVs, but "such a wonderful car always spurs us to create something really special," says Hans-Jrgen Abt. The managing director of ABT Sportsline emphasizes that it is about "blending our philosophy with the character of the car." With the ABT Q5, this worked perfectly: The Allgu SUV is fast, beefy, sleek, extravagant, extremely versatile - and therefore evokes five wows.

2009 ABT Audi Q5-12009 ABT Audi Q5-2The ABT Q5 is impressing, harmonic and superior from every angle. The front skirt with the integrated underride protection finds its equivalent in the rear skirt, which, in a very elegant way, also hides the tow bar extendable for use. The mighty front grille, the fender extensions and the dynamic door strip attachments form a unit. The rear wing, the 4-pipe-rear muffler and the BR wheel rim in size 20-inch also fit in optimally into the elegant overall picture. The ABT Q5 is indeed a car for all occasions: No matter whether in front of a luxury hotel or a beer garden, this vehicle fits in everywhere.

The Q5 follows its bigger brother from Kempten, the AS7, suit: the "S" in "SUV" means "particularly sporty". A genuine ABT always has significantly more power, even more so when all four wheels are powered. The two diesel engines sparkle with energy: thanks to ABT Power, the 2.0 TDI delivers potent 190hp (140kW) instead of 170hp (125kW). The 3.0 TDI delivers the most powerful performance for the ABT Q5: with ABT Power S, it achieves 310hp or 228kW (Series: 240hp/176kW) on any terrain. Particularly impressing: its maximum torque of 610Nm. Also the 2.0 TFSI is suited perfectly for the SUV from Kempten: thanks to ABT Power, 211hp (155kW) are turned into sporty 240hp (177kW).

When a power upgrade is made, suspension and brakes, too, have to be adjusted to the increased power. That is why Abt is offering a fine tuned package for the Q5: suspension springs, lowering of the car's center of gravity or also the well-proven ABT Level Control, an electronic lowering for the CDC air suspension (Continous Damping Control). Regarding deceleration, the ABT sports brake system provides for a maximum of safety, which meets the increased requirements: the brake disks with a diameter of 380mm are strong enough for the fast SUV - and behind the 20-inch-wheel rims type BR or AR, they also look extremely good.

The ABT Q5 is going to be available within the first quarter of 2009.

Audi Q5 – engine details

Audi is maintaining its successful efficiency strategy: the new Audi Q5, the sports car in the SUV category, is its latest model to combine high performance with low consumption. This progress is underpinned by an extensive package of hi-tech solutions ranging from energy recuperation to engine downsizing.

Audi is bringing the new Q5 onto the market equipped with three powerful, sporty engines – one turbo FSI gasoline version and two TDIs, all of which are state-of-the-art units featuring turbocharging and direct fuel injection. The perfect interplay of these two technologies paves the way for downsizing, which involves using supercharging as a means of trimming engine capacity. This enables the Q5 to achieve CO2 emissions of less than 200 grams per kilometer (321.87 g/mile).

The new 2.0 TFSI, the successor to the engine that was voted “Engine of the Year” four times in a row, is an object lesson in efficiency. The performance of this four-cylinder engine, which develops 155 kW (211 hp) and 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) of torque, puts it in the same league as conventional six-cylinder engines. Yet its fuel consumption averages only 8.5 liters per 100 kilometers (27.67 US mpg) – giving it a clear advantage over its competitors.

The TDI engines fit in with Audi’s downsizing strategy. The four-cylinder diesel develops an impressive 125 kW (170 hp) from its two-liter engine. It delivers 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft)
of torque and covers 100 kilometers on an average of just 6.7 liters of fuel (35.11 US mpg) in the Audi Q5. The top diesel in the Q5 is the 3.0 TDI, a V6 with an output of 176 kW (240 hp) and a massive 500 Nm (368.78 lb-ft) of torque. Its average consumption over 100 kilometers is just 7.5 liters (31.36 US mpg).

The high torque values at low revs have allowed the engineers to select slightly higher transmission ratios without undermining dynamic performance. The peak torque is achieved at a very early point on all engines in the Audi Q5 – the 2.0 TFSI, for instance, already achieves its 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) at 1,500 rpm, barely above idle speed. The Q5 thus handles supremely well at low revs – with correspondingly good fuel efficiency.

2009 Audi Q5 Spy Photos

Built at the Ingolstadt factory in Germany, the Q5 will be Audi’s answer to the BMW’s X3 and Mercedes’ upcoming GLK. With production scheduled to start later this year, our European photographers caught this Q5 with little disguising undergoing final tests on the roads around the German Nürburgring.

2009 Audi Q5 -12009 Audi Q5 -22009 Audi Q5 -3According to Audi, 300 million Euros (AUD $500 million) have been invested in the project, with around 1700 employees involved. The Q5 is based on the same new platform as the A5 and the brand-new A4, making it possible for Audi to offer a full range of engines from the FSI-equipped four- and six-cylinder engines to diesel models. For those wanting a little more, there is already talk of an S5 variant, powered by Audi’s 4.2-litre V8.

All Q5 variants are expected to receive an updated version of the Quattro all-wheel-drive system and be driven via either a six-speed manual or the new seven-speed DSG gearbox. Additional features include hill-descent control and an adjustable air suspension.

Audi Q5 getting 7-speed DSG

The Audi Q5 will reportedly make its official debut at the Bejing Motor Show next month and with Porsche's increased stake in the Volkswagen group – going from 31-percent to more than 50-percent – that means that VAG and Porsche might begin to finally play nice again with platform sharing.

Audi Q5 getting 7-speed DSGAudi Q5 getting 7-speed DSG-2Initially, the new Q5 was supposed to underpin Porsche's own mini 'ute, but rumors suggested that Audi's board nixed the idea for fear that a Porsche model sharing the same platform could steal sales from the new CUV. That's about to change as Porsche gets a few seats on VAG's board, and according to Autoweek, development of the vehicle-formerly-known as the Roxster is back in full swing.

While there's no new information about the Porsche, Audi's Q5 will be revealed packing the new seven-speed dual-clutch S-tronic gearbox mated to a longitudinal engine. The real benefit of the new DL500 transmission is that it can handle torque output up to 405 lb.-ft. and engine revs of 8,500 rpm. The new tranny will disseminate throughout the rest of the Audi lineup in coming years, first in Quattro models, including the new A4, and then on down to the automaker's front-wheel-drive models.

Audi Q5 - first hybrid version

In an interview with Automotive News, Joel Weinberger, head of Audi's dealer council, revealed some interesting information about the next Audi Q5. When questioned about the position of the market in the USA he replied, "The Q7 is a really big vehicle. Just size-wise you have to look at the (Lexus) RX 330 as your target. The Q5 will fit into that niche and it should not cannibalize the Q7. It will be bigger than the (BMW) X3 and (Acura) RDX. Smaller SUVs tend to be more female-oriented."

Audi Q5Audi Q5 -2Other interesting news on the engine front: in the American market the hybrid variant will arrive first and only afterwards will the diesel version be released, "The Q5 will go hybrid first and not diesel. Audi has told me the unit cost of a diesel is $4,000 more but they realize they cannot sell it for $4,000 more - the premium will be half of that. We'll sell them if they can keep pricing in line."
