Volkswagen Passat BlueTDI at Paris Motor Show

Volkswagen’s stand at Paris Motor Show and it's already sounded very interesting with the new Golf VI and its GTI version. Today, the German carmaker announced another premiere scheduled for the French show, the VW Passat BlueTDI.

Volkswagen Passat BlueTDIThe BlueTDI diesels are the cleanest engines VW has ever produced, comply to Euro-6 standards and they’ll go into production on the Passat starting next year. Europe will get them first, and though nothing was mention about the United States, the car will definitely be available here too. Volkswagen already offers BlueTDI engines, Euro 5 compliant, for the Tiguan and the Jetta, but the one featured in Paris represents the next generation, which combined with the dual-clutch DSG gearbox reduces CO2 emissions by up to 28%.

The Volkswagen Passat BlueTDI is powered by the 2.0-liter common-rail engine which now delivers 143hp, with a fuel consumption of 5.2 liters/100km (45 US mpg) and 139 g/km CO2 emissions for the Passat sedan, and 5.5 liters/100km (42.7 US mpg) and emits 144 g/km CO2 for the Variant.

2008 Volkswagen Passat Sedan Volkswagen’s mid-size Passat sedan received a complete makeover for the 2006 model year, then the 2007 edition added a wagon model (which is covered in a separate review) and some new tech features, like Adaptive Cruise Control. For 2008, the Passat gets modest changes, including simplified trim levels: Turbo, Komfort, Lux, and VR6.

The VR6 model gets a 280-horsepower 3.6-liter “VR6” V-6 engine and available 4Motion all-wheel drive; all the other models make do with a 200-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Most drivers will be happy with the performance from the four-cylinder engine, which delivers brisk acceleration and is very responsive with either the six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The V-6 comes only with the six-speed Tiptronic automatic and is about a second faster to 60 mph than the four-cylinder/manual transmission version of the 2008 Volkswagen Passat, which gets there in about 7.6 seconds, though the fuel economy penalty is significant. Trim by trim, the base Turbo model is now the only sedan that can be outfitted with the manual gearbox.

The quality of the materials in the 2008 Volkswagen Passat is quite impressive, and the interior layout feels both luxurious and practical. There are plenty of interior storage bins, and even an umbrella-storage area. The Passat now has back-seat space that rivals some of the roomiest sedans in the mid-size class; it’s especially leg-friendly for lanky adult passengers. Although the rear doorline makes an odd straight cut downward, the door’s unusual shape really helps entry/exit. The ventilation system now has adjustable vents for rear passengers, too.

2009 Volkswagen Passat CC

Volkswagen has long since emerged from its standing as a no-frills straightforward automaker with a handful of products to offer a full range of vehicles, including hatchbacks, sedans of all sizes, wagons, vans, convertibles, sport coupes, SUVs, a four-door coupe and even an upcoming pickup truck. The German automaker is banking on that diversity to reach an ambitious sales goal of 6.6 million units per annum within ten years from now.

2009 Volkswagen Passat CC-12009 Volkswagen Passat CC-2The svelte new Passat CC unveiled in Detroit will form a big part of the company's push, targeted to sell some 300,000 units around the world over the next six years...pretty ambitious for a niche vehicle, to be sure. Although reports suggest that Volkswagen could be dropping the Passat name from this vehicle (at least in the U.S.) in favor of the "CC" moniker alone, the latest information from the automaker itself (it's a European press release) continues to employ the well-established name, which is the third most popular nameplate in Volkswagen's history behind the Golf and Beetle.

Whatever it will be called, the new four-door coupe will launch in the Fall in markets across Europe, the Far East and North America, and to soften the ground for its landing, VW has laid on us a whole mess of information and new pictures. We're particularly intrigued by the range-topping Passat CC V6 4Motion, packed with all-wheel-drive, DSG and adaptive chassis control. Phaeton who now?

2008 Volkswagen Passat V6 4Motion review

One Euro option to consider in the Estate/Avant/Wagon market is the Volkswagen Passat V6 4Motion. With more of a split dash layout, looking more like an Audi A4 in style, it pushes the conservative image away, moving more into modern territory.

2008 Volkswagen Passat V6 4Motion-12008 Volkswagen Passat V6 4Motion-22008 Volkswagen Passat V6 4Motion-3The exterior has also been upgraded, with the V-shaped chrome front end, echoing the Jetta and Golf R32, without looking too much like a boy-racer. The styling of the wagon actually suits the car’s front end better than the sedan, especially when looking at a three quarter view. There’s more of that sports-estate look and less of the droopy slater rear guards that the sedan has.

It’s essentially the same engine as in the VW Golf R32 and Multivan, just slightly muted to suit the “family” image. Yet, at 184kW and 330Nm, there’s enough poke to haul the kids and the dog across the quarter mile in 15.3 seconds. 100km/h is gone in 7.2 seconds.

The 4Motion system is also a winner. A joy on dirt and gravel, it sends plenty of power to the rear for some “hope the wife doesn’t notice” fun. Even on bitumen - with the ESP off - enter a corner at speed and just before you hit the apex, press the throttle. Load up the steering, feel the front wheels pushing wide and straight after the apex, lift off. Welcome to oversteer city.
This is a genuinely fun car to drive with adjustable handling that’s completely predictable. The Haldex coupling is used to drive the rear wheels, and is absolutely imperceptible when it kicks in, meaning it really does feel like a full-time all wheel drive vehicle.

The brakes are also excellent, slightly overdone, but the initial grab makes highway work a joy. They will fade when really pushed though, but recover quickly. The steering is electric, so it lacks feel, but it’s precise and reasonably direct. Of course, the ride is firm, but not uncomfortable and the body control is commendable.

Then there’s the kit. Rain-sensing wipers, auto lights on, eight airbags, electronic park brake, automatic hill hold, parking sensors front and rear, Xenon headlights, LED tail-lights, perforated leather seats, fold-flat floor, and of course, the most important – an umbrella holder in the drivers door. $56,990 is par for the course too, for Euro wagons in todays market.

Combine that with a rocketship engine, plenty of space, good looks and proper driveability. It has a few shortcomings, but to live with day to day the V6 Passat is good, no question.
