Honda 2008 S2000 CR Prototype

NEW YORK — Saying that the lighter and stiffer S2000 CR is the "closest thing you can get to a Honda-built racing car with license plate holders and a horn," the Japanese automaker on Wednesday rolled out its highly anticipated, track-worthy roadster at the 2007 New York Auto Show. The latest iteration of the S2000 will hit showrooms in the fall.

It is mated to a short-throw six-speed manual transmission. Other details include a front and rear double-wishbone suspension, electric power steering and a torque-sensing limited-slip differential.

A standard aluminum hardtop replaces the soft top of the conventional S2000. Honda says this results in an overall weight savings of about 90 pounds when removed, versus the current S2000. The S2000 CR also gets a full-body aerodynamic package that reduces lift through large front and rear spoilers. Chassis features include a quicker steering ratio, Bridgestone Potenza RE070 tires, a wider rear tire size, firmer springs and dampers, larger stabilizer bars and a new wheel design in a dark gray color.

Prices have not been announced.
