2008 Aston Martin Vantage N24 Asia Cup

Aston Martin is launching an exciting new one-make race series for Asia. This follows the announcement of two new Aston Martin dealerships in Shanghai and Beijing.

2008 Aston Martin Vantage N24 2008 Aston Martin Vantage N24 -2Called the Aston Martin Asia Cup (AMAC), the series starts in 2008 and will consist of 12 races throughout the Asia Pacific region including China, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore. Each race will feature a grid of 18 Aston Martin Vantage N24s, a 4.3 litre race-developed evolution of the V8 Vantage which has been proven in endurance and sprint races in Europe and the Middle East.

The AMAC will include a variety of 30 minute sprint races and longer endurance races, some of which will support Formula One events in the region. The series will provide a stable, well-regulated racing environment with competitive racing in equal equipment provided by the series’ organisers. Competitors will be able to ‘arrive and drive’ thanks to a comprehensive service package which includes: engineers and technicians, logistical support, hospitality and accommodation, race entry, and a comprehensive spare parts package. Drivers may be able to enter with their own teams, subject to approval by the series organisers.

The Vantage N24 is built to international FIA GT4 regulations by Aston Martin Racing in the UK, who will also provide technical support for the series. The car has a V8 engine producing 410 bhp and weighs just 1350 kg. The 18 AMAC cars have the latest automated manual Sportshift transmission, for fast precise gear shifts, and all the cars are equipped with roll cages, safety fuel tanks, race seats and harnesses, and fire extinguisher systems. The cars will be serviced at the Aston Martin Beijing service facility at the city’s Goldenport race circuit. Aston Martin Beijing will be offering a special factory collection option, which will see customers receive expert instruction on the Goldenport track and an opportunity to drive a Vantage N24.

In addition to prize money and trophies, the overall winner of the AMAC series will be awarded a sponsored drive in a Vantage N24 in the FIA GT4 series in 2009.

The introduction of the Aston Martin Asia Cup marks a new and exciting chapter for Aston Martin and their partners in China and the Asia Pacific region.

2008 AC Schnitzer BMW ACS1 3.5i

Not only in proportions is the new 1-series Coupe a worthy successor to the BMW 2002, but also technically: As in the 70s, the current most powerful standard version is powered by a "charged" engine. At the same time, the maximum torque rises from 400 to 450 Nm and the top speed from 250 to an impressive 300 km/h.

Is the Renault Alpine coming back?

The '60's Alpine was an icon for French and international sport cars enthusiasts, and in AutoExpress' opinion the charming coupè could soon have a heir.

Renault Alpine According to a Renault insider, the new car is going through the development tests and will be on sale in 2010. Rumors say that it will probably have a small turbocharged gasoline which will follow the current downsizing trend. Some say (and we hope it's true...) that the unit will be in mid-rear position, in order to enhance the driving experience.

The only clues we have nowadays are a few pictures of some Renault Megane-shaped test-mules while lapping on the 'Ring that very likely hide the next Alpine's mechanichs.

First Drive 2009 Toyota Matrix XRS

The 2009 Toyota Matrix is supposed to be very influential, just as the original Matrix proved when it was introduced in 2003. This tall wagon-style compact based on the Toyota Corolla had a sport-utility flavor but drove like a car, making it one of the first crossovers with an affordable price tag. Its big backseat and dog-friendly cargo bay made utility kind of cool. Without the Matrix, the Mazda3 five-door, Scion xB and even the Audi A3 might not have achieved the coolness they have today.

2009 Toyota Matrix XRS2009 Toyota Matrix XRS-22009 Toyota Matrix XRS-3So you can imagine our surprise when David Terai, chief engineer for the 2009 Toyota Matrix, tells us, "During extensive meetings all over the country with customers, owners and dealers, we found that the current Matrix was seen far too often as a small, conventional, practical wagon."

Stronger but Calmer XRS
If you've driven a 2003-'06 Matrix XRS (or its Pontiac Vibe GT counterpart), you'll remember it well. Motivating it was the Yamaha-built 1.8-liter engine from the now-departed Celica GT-S. You had to spin this hard-working little engine past 4,000 rpm to get any torque, and it was trying to do business in a chassis that was at best a reluctant co-conspirator. Schizophrenic was the only way to describe the result.

Toyota expects the XRS to get to 60 mph in the low 8-second range. No one's going to get excited over a number like this, though it puts the Matrix roughly on par with the four-door Volkswagen Rabbit, which has a 170-hp five-cylinder engine and takes about 8 seconds even to hit 60. The VW only makes 150 hp, but its five-cylinder engine offers a bit more torque than the Matrix XRS's four.

Fuel economy could be a sticking point for some, however, as the Matrix isn't able to deliver typical Toyota gas mileage when equipped with the 2.4-liter engine. With a manual gearbox, the Matrix XRS has a 21 mpg city/28 mpg highway rating, while automatics do one better on highway mileage.

Not the Car It Wants To Be
Despite its impressive levels of refinement, the 2009 Toyota Matrix XRS is not an athlete. Sure, the Matrix XRS is quicker and more agile than in years past, but it doesn't come close to matching the entertainment value of a Mazda3.

For us this is kind of disappointing, but we doubt it will bother the 70,000 people who will decide to purchase a Matrix in 2008. In base, S or XRS trim, this remains a perfectly practical small wagon that you'll purchase for rational reasons rather than emotional ones.

When's the last time you saw one of these offered for sale? Only 1 out of 5 1954 Rivieras was a Century. 1954 was the year that Buick reintroduced the Century. It shared the smaller wheel base of the Special but had the big Roadmaster engine. The engine was a 322ci nailhead with a 4 barrel carb and produced 200 hp. In 1954 it was one of thethree fastest production cars made. It earned the title "Banker's Hotrod". The roofline is also different from the Super and Roadmaster.
This car has spent its entire life in Texas and Arizona and in absolutely RUST FREE. It has had one repaint and that still looks good, The upholstery and carpets are also in good shape. The bumper and grille have been rechromed and the stainless is excellent. The tires are Coker Classic bias plys and are in good shape, the spare is new. The engine was rebuilt in 1989 and since I bought the car I have spent over $5,000 correcting mechanical and other issues. A partial list of the improvements made are, new master cylinder, rebuilt fuel pump, addition of auxillary electric fuel pump with under dash toggle switch. repair of all guages, repair of speedometer, odometer reads 29+K miles but I doubt if that is accurate. Complete new windshield wiper assembly, new horn relay, repair and lube of all cables associated with heat and defrost, much electrical rewiring to ensure that all lights work properly. Repair of the optional WonderBar Radio (a $1000 item today) new sending unit in fuel tank. adjustments made to improve steering,
adjustments to the synaflow transmission to ensure that it locks up in park. Hoses replaced as needed.

First Dodge Challengers to start just under $38,000

Dodge announced this morning the new 2008 Challenger SRT8 muscle car will have a $37,995 sticker price, including destination charges.

The automaker begins taking orders Dec. 3 for the limited-edition model that will be in showrooms next spring.

The limited-edition 2008 Challenger SRT8 model, which will have a 6.1-liter Hemi V-8 engine, will be available in black, silver and orange.

Each will feature a numbered dash plaque, the company said.

“The Challenger SRT8 is only the beginning of the story, as we’ll soon follow with a complete lineup of Challenger models that will offer a wide array of features and deliver outstanding value for our customers,” Jim Press, a Chrysler president and vice chairman, said in a statement.

2009 Dodge Journey - North American Debut

Chrysler isn't wasting any time pulling the covers off of its newest crossover, the Dodge Journey, at Frankfurt, the first car show of the season. Then again, it makes sense, since the Journey has global sales ambitions. We're not convinced that the world needs a big crossover, but we're guessing the Journey has a good chance at being embraced by consumers here at home.

2009 Dodge Journey2009 Dodge Journey-22009 Dodge Journey-3The Journey shares its underpinnings with the Avenger sedan, riding on a wheelbase that has been stretched 4.9 inches to 113.8 inches. Essentially a front-wheel drive vehicle, the crossover will be available with all-wheel drive only when powered by its largest engine - a 3.5-liter V-6 making 235 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque. The 3.5-liter is attached to a six-speed automatic transmission and, with front-wheel drive, is expected to return 16 mpg in the city and 23 on the highway.

That's not bad economy considering that the middle-child V-6, a 2.7-liter producing 186 hp and 191 lb-ft returns the same economy on the highway and only one mpg better in the city. The reason for such a small difference in economy is that the smaller V-6 is attached to an automatic with only four forward speeds.

Also running with a four-speed automatic is the base engine, a 2.4-liter VVT inline-four that produces almost as many ponies as the small V-6 - 173 of them (and 166 lb-ft of torque) and slightly better economy; it's rated at 19/25 city/highway.

As usual, Chrysler has included a bunch of innovative features in this new crossover - it has storage under the front passenger seat as well as two in-floor storage bins behind the front seats that can each take twelve cans of soda. The Journey is the first mid-size crossover to offer available integrated child booster seats, and it of course comes with Chrysler's MyGig multimedia system.

Mercedes SLR gets Mercedes SLR-der

The last thing you want to see when you own a car as exclusive as the McLaren-Mercedes SLR is another one coming along the road towards you.
The new SLR 722 GT aims to eliminate that possibility on two fronts: One, only 21 will be built, and two... it's not road-legal.

McLaren-Mercedes SLRMcLaren-Mercedes SLR-2The 722 GT has been built by British racing specialist RML to satisfy those SLR owners who thought the standard model was a bit, well, soft.
Designed exclusively for the track, it's a lighter, more powerful version of the front-engined supercar. 29bhp more powerful, to be exact. RML has uprated the SLR's 5.5-litre V8 to produce 670bhp and 612lb ft of torque.

With 300kg lopped off the SLR's kerbweight - thanks to 'dispensing with numerous comfort features' - it'll hit 62mph in just 3.3 seconds, half a second quicker than the road-going version.
Just imagine what it sounds like getting there. The standard 722 makes a racket like Satan ingesting a warhead, so the GT - with its revised exhaust - should be capable of making children cry from a distance of several miles.

Naturally, the 722 GT benefits from a bunch of aero revisions, including that massive rear spoiler, a new front apron and a bigger rear diffuser. Inside the cabin there's a full roll cage, six-point race harnesses and a racing wheel.
The SLR's five-speed auto 'box remains, but RML has fitted a locking diff to help the 722 GT cope with corners.

Mitsubishi Concept-RA

It's still six weeks until the Detroit motor show, but Mitsubishi has already unveiled an early contender for our coveted Best-Looking Car in Show award.

This is the Concept-RA, a sports car study that takes the new Evo's all-wheel-drive tech and transplants it into a handsome coupe body... with diesel power.

Mitsubishi Concept-RA-2Yes, diesel power. Nestled between those fat front arches is a 2.2-litre four-pot turbodiesel that produces just 202bhp but a decent 310lb ft of torque. That's an unusually realistic engine for a concept, and indicates that Mitsubishi could be serious about bringing this one to production.

That turbodiesel drives all four wheels through the same dual-clutch 'box as found on the new Evo.

The Concept-RA also borrows the Evo's centre diff, yaw control, stability control and active braking, but adds active steering and damping controls. All of which creates a bewildering array of acronyms and, more importantly, a car that should be as good to drive as it is to look at.

So is the Concept-RA finally an Eclipse for Europe, or is it a hint that there could be a diesel Evo on the way? We'll do our best to find out in Detroit next January.

Auto racing is spectacular and exciting, but can be dangerous!” The Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course posts this caution next to the drivers’ bathrooms, so it’s probably worth repeating in this introduction to the Honda S2000 CR. For the CR—the initials stand for “Club Racer”—is about rubber-chunking, brake-burning, wall-fanning track work. You wouldn’t really want the shale-stiff CR for anything else, which is perhaps why Honda plans to sell only 1400 copies of the circa-$38,000 CR in 2008.

Spring rates and shock-damping settings are hiked considerably, although they remain nonadjustable, and the anti-roll bars are thicker. The steering ratio is hastened from 14.9:1 to 13.8:1, and stiffeners are added to the rack mount to increase rigidity. The CR’s blocky Bridgestone Potenza RE070 tires, tread-widened in back from 245 to 255, proved stickier while lapping Mid-Ohio back-to-back with base 2008 S2000s (slightly revised instruments top the list of minor refinements to the base car).

Compared with the base S2000, the CR is simply harder and sharper, with less body roll and tire scrubbing and more corner composure and stability under braking. With no more horsepower, the CR pruned about three seconds off lap times turned in the base car. That’s a gift any racer will surely find spectacular and exciting.

Exotic cars that say Look, but Don't Touch

We’re talking about cars like the Bugatti Veyron. There is only supposed to be 300 of these supermobiles driving around somewhere in the world. That’s enough to make it as precious as gold. If you can catch them, that is. The Veyron soars from zero to 60 in less than 2.5 seconds and has a top speed of 253 miles per hour.

Koenigsegg CCXWhen a person hears the phrase, “coveted car,” no doubt they think of Porsche, BMW, and other types of luxury cars. But there are cars that are even more coveted.An even more rare car is the Koenigsegg CCX. There are less than 20 available in the U.S. And this all new Swedish super car can perform with the Bugatti Veyron.

So what elevates a car to such rarified status? These are cars that have a limited production run of say 300 or even as few as 20. Of course, these cars are expensive. There are so few of them.

But they are also expensive because of what’s in them -- high performance engines, unique styling, etc. It seems that the rich and famous, those guys and gals who can afford cars like these, covet the ones that are the most exclusive. Manufacturers of these types of cars see the value in keeping them as exclusive as possible. The idea is that not every one who wants a car can have it simply because there are too few of them made. That’s what turns the profit.

Daimler is about to give the SL a major facelift, due for launch at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2008.

Previous spy shots showed cars with a lot of disguise or buried in snow. These photos show the next SL without any disguise-the few pieces of black tape having been removed from the car by computer.

Engines are likely to remain the same as in the current model, but rumors are suggesting a turbocharged version of the six-cylinder engine with 354 hp. The top of the line will be the SL65 AMG with 612 hp.

2009 Jaguar XFR Spied!

Our spies in the U.K. have snapped the firstalt="" photos of what appears to be the first full-fledged prototype of Jaguar's upcoming XFR.

A new quad-pipe exhaust design hints that this car is running a revised powertrain, and the large, cross-drilled rotors speak of an upgraded braking system to deal with this XF's higher performance potential. Large 20-inch wheels and a noticeably lower ride height suggest a more aggressive suspension seXFRt-up, in keeping with Jag's usual formula for their R-spec cars. Any changes to the front fascia of this XFR prototype are very subtle, and may be limited to this car's blacked-out grille mesh.
Earlier this summer, some mules appeared that hinted that an XFR was in the works. Based on previous-generation S-Type bodies with XF noses grafted on, those mules also had cross-drilled rotors, the same wheels, and a makeshift quad-pipe exhaust configuration. This latest prototype takes those same details, and applies them to a complete XF package, suggesting that the XFR is now in the home stretch.
Our sources from Britain believe that a highly tweaked version of
Jaguar's supercharged 4.2-liter V-8 produces about 500
horsepower in the XFR, basically matching some of the hottest metal from BMW, Audi and Mercedes AMG.

The long-rumored, range-topping XFR-plus (for lack of a better name) may employ a new 5.0-liter engine, and could push power ratings closer to 600 hp. But that car is a good way's off, while this XFR prototype is now running the streets of Coventry, being readied for launch sometime in the next 12-15 months.

2008 Lamborghini Reventon vs Tornado Jet Fighter

The Ghedi (Brescia) military airport was the setting this week for an extraordinary acceleration race between a Tornado aircraft [A200-A] provided by the airbase, and the Lamborghini Reventуn driven by an official Lamborghini test driver.

The fighter pilot and the Lamborghini test driver challenged each other on the 3000 (1.86 miles) m-long runway.
The Reventуn took the lead in the first leg of the race, but the Tornado caught up in the last few metres, taking off and flying over the Reventуn that was going at a speed of over 340 km/h.

2007 Chevrolet Corvette C6.R

When the four-hour race was finished, Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta stood on the top step of the victory podium in the GT1 class for a record-tying ninth time in 2007. The "two Ollies" drove their No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6.R to a 30-second victory over the No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6.R of Johnny O'Connell and Jan Magnussen.

Corvette Racing won the GT1 manufacturer and team championships for the seventh consecutive year.

The lead in the GT1 division changed hands three times in the four-hour race. Magnussen started on the pole and led until the first round of pit stops at 56 minutes into the race. Gavin took the lead over O'Connell at the first driver change, but surrendered the point after contact with a GT2 Ferrari in the Andretti Hairpin shortly after two hours of racing. The No. 4 car regained the lead on the second round of pit stops and driver changes at the 2:16 mark. Beretta and Magnussen then drove the last hour and 45 minutes, stopping for a splash of fuel and tires at 20 minutes before the checkered flag.

The GT1 race was literally won in the pits. "We were a little down after finishing second in the pit stop competition, but we pulled together," said Ray Gongla, crew chief for the No. 4 Corvette. "The guys had to do three flawless pit stops in a row, and they did it."
Magnussen mounted a furious charge from lap 99 to lap 109, cutting Beretta's lead to 1.74 seconds at one point.

First Drive 2007 Holden VE Utility

It's a pickup truck, only it doesn't have much payload. That's because this pickup is trying to imitate a sport sedan, and a sport sedan that also happens to be fast, sophisticated and highly acclaimed. And to wrap up the wrongness, this pickup is not only cheaper than its sport sedan sibling, it's also faster.

Style is important, because many of the people who'll be buying the VE ute are tradesmen made good. With a fleet of Japanese pickups to do his dirty work for the employees, a $42,000 ute full of sport-sedan fixings is the boss' way of saying that he hasn't forgotten his roots.

Weighty Matters, or Are They?
Holden had a hard act to follow in the VU-VZ, which had blossomed into models that ranged from crude 1-ton V6s to four-wheel-drive crew cabs and even included a lowered SS sports powered by a 6.0-liter L76 V8, plus a bunch of iterations in between.

Only one of the four new Holden VE models — the steel-wheeled, 260-horsepower V6 Omega — is an obvious workhorse. The luxed-up SS V with a six-speed automatic as seen here is rated for a payload of 1,120 pounds.Oh, sure, there's performance available from this 362-hp V8. Testing indicates this ute will get to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and then cross the line in the quarter-mile in 13.8 seconds, making this trick truck a tenth or two faster than an equivalent four-door.Weight doesn't explain it, since this 3,981-pound ute actually pips the sedan's weight by 2 pounds.

2008 Mazda MAZDA6 Review

Introduction
Since it debuted five years ago, the Mazda 6 has been the sports car of the midsize sedan segment. Taught, communicative steering and a poised chassis are hallmarks of a car that begs to be driven with enthusiasm -- even if the destination is the local Wal-Mart. Its stylish design and driver-oriented cockpit exude a visual excitement that others in this staid segment shy away from for fear of turning off more conservative buyers. The 2008 Mazda 6 still happily boasts a sporty personality, yet provides plenty of family-friendly practicality.

The Sport Wagon has been killed off, the latest casualty in the American purge of the dreaded wagon species. Nevertheless, the unique "five-door" hatchback model remains. This body style is popular in Europe, but rare in America where even the slightest whiff of a hatchback makes consumers go "yuck." Still, the hatchback maintains a very sedanlike profile and to some eyes, its fastback profile is more attractive than the traditional four-door sedan. Plus, its 22 cubic feet of cargo space is the largest available in the family sedan market -- topping even the full-size Ford Taurus.

Powertrains and Performance
All 2008 Mazda 6 models are front-wheel drive. Standard on the i model is a 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine that makes 156 hp and 154 pound-feet of torque. The s model upgrades to a 3.0-liter V6 that makes 212 hp and 197 lb-ft. The Sport trim level comes only with a five-speed manual, while the Sport Value Edition offers a five-speed automatic. The Touring and Grand Touring trims are only available with a six-speed automatic. The Mazda 6 s will run to 60 mph in about 8 seconds flat, which is respectable, but at least a second off the pace of the segment speedsters.

Revised 2008 fuel economy figures for the four-cylinder i model are 21 mpg city and 28 mpg highway with the automatic transmission. The six-cylinder s model rates 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway with the automatic. The Sport trim's manual transmission has a negligible effect on fuel mileage.

Future Tuner 2009 Hyundai Tiburon

There has been a lot of talk from the Hyundai camp lately about the new Genesis sedan. From around the globe we can hear the executives in Korea singing its praises: "It will move us up market! It has a 380-horsepower V-8! It's got rear-wheel drive!" Those things are all well and good, but what we're excited about more than the big sedan is the soon-to-follow little brother coupe.

This car is such a big step over the old Tib that Hyundai is considering dropping the name to distinguish it. We've heard that both Tuscani - as the Tiburon is known throughout the rest of the world - and Genesis Coupe are being considered.

Why is the new Tiburon such a big deal? Like the best tuner cars, it has rear-wheel drive, a powerful engine, and (most importantly) a low price. Starting in the low twenty thousands, the coupe will come with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with horsepower in the low two hundreds. There will also be a 300-horsepower V-6 available, also mated to a six-speed manual transmission. We're predicting that the turbo-four will be the way to go.

All Hyundai has to do is make this car look hot, and so far, we like what we see. Sure, these are only spy photos, but they reveal quite a lot about the final product. We like the downward slanting slope over the rear wheels and the aggressive front end. Sized similarly to a Nissan 350Z, the coupe will have a usable rear seat.

The new Tiburon will go into production in late 2008 and be in showrooms early the next year. The Tiburon is the only rear-drive turbocharged sports coupe in its segment - so tuners all over the country need to save a spot in their garage for one.

Fiat 500 wins European Car of the Year award

Fifty-eight journalist from twenty-two countries around Europe have voted the Fiat 500 as "European Car of the Year 2008" with 385 votes, ahead of the Mazda 2 (325 votes) and the Ford Mondeo (202). The cute subcompact was also in 57 of the 58 short lists and was voted first by jury members.

Fiat 500Fiat has won already this award 12 times: Fiat 124 (1967), Fiat 128 (1970), Fiat 127 (1972), Lancia Delta (1980), Fiat Uno (1984), Fiat Tipo (1989), Fiat Punto (1995), Fiat Bravo/Brava (1996), Alfa 156 (1998), Alfa 147 (2001), Fiat Panda (2004) and the Fiat 500 (2008).

The 500 is quite a success: up to date, 105,000 orders have been placed in Germany and Italy. The diesel version is including a Diesel Particullate Filter as a standard, and all engines satisfy the Euro V.

2008 Kia Spectra5 Review

The current Kia Spectra hasn't changed much since its debut in 2004, and even in the highly-competitive compact class that is not a problem. Even now, it holds its own very well thank you - especially the premium Spectra5 variant, an unusual and very European concept in the American compact market. Is it a five-door sporty hatchback? Or is it a small sport wagon?

2008 Kia Spectra5The Spectra did get a freshening for model year 2006, and interior trim upgrades last year. So 2008 changes are minor, limited to a new grille for the entry-level LX and mid-level EX sedans and a jack for an external audio player for the AM/FM/CD audio system standard in all models. The Spectra5 and similarly-outfitted SX sedan continue at the top of the line, with sporty exterior trim backed up by a firmer suspension tuning.

PERFORMANCE: With 138 horsepower (at 6000 rpm) and 136 lb-ft of torque (at 4500 rpm), the Spectra's 2.0-liter engine is one of the most powerful in its class. It's a dual overhead cam design with continuously variable cam phasing, and it drives the front wheels through a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. There is plenty of low-end torque to get moving, and once underway it's linear and only begins to fade as it approaches redline, not a bad characteristic at all for longevity. Linkage and ratio choice for the manual gearbox are both very good, and, with the fine suspension tuning, help determine the Spectra5's sporty, enjoyable character. The 130-pound penalty for the five-door hatchback body style has a negligible effect on real-world performance.

2008 Ford Focus 2008 Ford Focus -2We've all been hankering for a new Focus for a while now. We loved the Focus when it first rolled off the assembly line (Focus won Automobile of the Year in 2000.) Since then, though, Ford's small car has become a bit dated. OK, really dated.

The 2008 model will be the first update to the Focus line since a freshening in 2003. The styling, while certainly new and unique, hasn't won many fans in our office. New safety features include standard side and side curtain air bags, but the really exciting upgrade is the Ford Sync system. The Focus is the first member of the Ford family to get the cool new technology, which integrates all of the car's electronics and makes them accessible through voice commands. The Sync will also connect to cell phones and portable music players.

Prices for the new Focus start at $14,695. If the options stay in line with last year, a fully loaded Focus will run about $19,000. Even if it is a bit strange looking, we don't think Ford will have any problem selling lots of the cars. The real question is whether or not the new Focus can capture our affection the way the first one did.

2008 Suzuki Reno What’s New

The front-drive Reno compact hatchback sedan is based on the Forenza and is also manufactured in South Korea . Largely a carryover for the 2008 model year, the Reno will be discontinued in the near future as Suzuki plans new products for the U.S. market.

The Reno 's interior is larger than many competitors and it is priced very competitively as well. New equipment for 2008 includes steering-wheel audio controls on the Convenience package, and optional Bluetooth connectivity across the lineup.

2008 Saab 9-5 What’s New

The Saab 9-5 sedan returns for yet another model year with minor changes, as it awaits a full model renewal.
Available in standard or Aero trim, the 9-5 comes with a 260-horsepower turbocharged 2.3-liter four. A five-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a five-speed automatic available as an option.

2008 Dodge Ram What’s New

Dodge's boldly styled, full-size pickup line returns for the 2008 model year in light-duty 1500, and heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 versions, with a choice of regular and four-door Quad Cab body styles and ST, SLT, Laramie, and Sport trim lines.

At 111 inches long, the Mega Cab offers plenty of room to seat six adult passengers and includes the first reclining rear seats available in a pickup. There's also about 7.6 cubic feet of covered storage behind the rear seats and a 24.9 square foot flat load floor; the rear seats also split-fold and move forward for added cargo flexibility.

Light-duty Rams come standard with a 215-horsepower 3.7-liter V-6 engine and can be alternatively fitted with a new-for-2008 4.7-liter V-8 that produces 310 horses and 330 lb-ft of torque, and the HEMI 5.7-liter V-8.
Heavy-duty models offer a choice of a 345-horsepower 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 gasoline engine or a turbodiesel in-line six. A Multi-Displacement System that shuts down half the cylinders to save fuel is standard with the 5.7-liter HEMI engine.

A TRX4 Off-Road model features 17-inch wheels and off-road tires, painted monotube shocks, tow hooks, skid plates, and a limited-slip differential.
For 2008, the Ram gets better steering on 4x4 models. Trailer Sway Control is added to models with stability control, and tire pressure monitors are available. A new SXT version is offered on Mega Cab models, and bigger mirrors are added on some models.
New exterior colors and interior trim are among the cosmetic changes for 2008. Power adjustable pedals, a navigation system, and DVD entertainment array are among the available options.

Debuting more than a decade ago, it has been one of America's most popular convertibles in terms of sales. With its redesigned 2008 Sebring convertible, Chrysler is hoping to maintain that supremacy by upping the comfort and luxury quotient with a longer equipment list and an available retractable hardtop.

The new Sebring convertible, as well as the redesigned sedan body style introduced last year, are based on a stretched and widened version of the platform also used for the mediocre Dodge Caliber compact. And like the Caliber, the Sebring's driving experience leaves much to be desired, with subpar handling and unrefined engines. Although the optional 3.5-liter V6 is fairly powerful, its gas mileage is poor. In all-wheel-drive form, it gets 15 mpg city and 24 mpg highway -- worse than a Chevrolet Corvette. The four-cylinder 2008 Chrysler Sebring sedan has an EPA fuel economy rating of 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway, while the 2.7-liter V6 gets 19/27 mpg. More attractive for consumers is the convertible's choice of either a retractable hardtop or conventional soft top. The optional retractable hardtop successfully hushes cabin wind noise and creates a more all-season-friendly car. The standard soft top is offered in vinyl or cloth, depending on the trim level, and comes with a large glass rear window. Although it may not be as trendy or all-weather capable as the $2,000 hardtop, it does maintain a nice-looking roof line.

The maddest Maybach yet

A couple of weeks ago, we asked you to come up with your own strange Maybachs.
You didn't disappoint - hell, some of them were downright disturbing - but it looks like tuner Brabus has trumped you all in Maybach-modding stakes.

MaybachMaybach-2This is the Mercedes specialists' take on the Maybach 57, a modified limo that Brabus claims to be the fastest ultra-luxury saloon in the world.
How fast? 205.2mph, since you ask, a record just set at the Nardo test track in Italy. That's the same place that the Brabus Rocket - a tuned-up version of the Merc CLS - clocked 227mph last year, and it's the same bi-turbo 6.3-litre V12 that powers the warp-speed Maybach.

It develops a massive 730bhp and, just as impressively, 811lb ft of torque. That figure has actually been limited from 974lb ft by the engine electronics? presumably to prevent the Brabus from ripping a big hole in the space-time continuum.

In finest tuning fashion, the Maybach gets 21-inch alloys and has been lowered by 15mm, too. Don't assume that it's some stripped-out racer, though: Brabus has gone to work on luxurising the interior with a pair of 15-inch flatscreen tellies, an on-board computer with wireless keyboard and mouse, and - naturally - lambs' wool floor mats.

All very nice, but where's the washing machine?

Smart Ramping Up Fast

As it gets ready to roll its first car into U.S. showrooms, smart is quickly building up its early order bank, noted the carmaker's boss, Dave Schembri.

In an unusual process, smart began offering potential customers the chance to make no-obligation, $99 "reservations" early this year. Now it is reaching out to those 30,000 handraisers, asking them to convert reservation into an actual order. So far, about 90 percent have followed through, going online to use smart's digital order form. Only about seven percent have canceled out and asked for their money back, said Schembri.

PassionIn the meantime, smart has continued its "very non-traditional" marketing campaign - which eschews traditional TV and print advertising in favor of direct consumer contact. A road tour recently wrapped up after visiting 50 cities and providing 50,000 test drives.
An unexpectedly low price tag has certainly been working in the maker's favor. Initial press reports anticipated a starting price of around $15,000, but the French-made two-seaters will launch at $11,590 for the base vehicle, $13,590 for the mid-range Passion model, and $16,590 for the Cabriolet.

Tellingly, those who placed reservations - mostly before pricing was announced - have decided, in large numbers, to upgrade when actually ordering a smart. So far, four percent are opting for the base car, 61 percent for the Passion Coupe and 35 percent are ordering the Cabriolet.
The first smart fortwo will go on sale just after the new year.

Renault Kangoo - how slow can you go?

Retired postmen and those of limited mobility rejoice: there's a new Renault Kangoo on the way.
Slowly. Very slowly. The original Kangoo was never renowned for particularly sprightly performance, but the new model sets a whole new standard in, erm, relaxed motoring.

Renault KangooRenault Kangoo-2Renault Kangoo-3Opt for the entry-level 1.5-litre diesel with 70bhp and the Kangoo will reach 60mph in - ready for this - 19.6 seconds. Just under 20 seconds! An almost-comprehensive scour of the statistics reveals that there are only two slower cars on sale at the moment: the 0.8-litre Chevy Matiz and the Fiat Panda 4x4. Esteemed company indeed.

There are, thankfully, quicker options: a higher-powered version of the 1.5-litre diesel putting out 105bhp or a 1.6-litre petrol engine developing the same power.
Neither are exactly blistering, but at least you won't find yourself being overtaken by glaciers. More excitingly, a pair of biofuel versions will arrive in the middle of next year.

Aside from the soporific performance, it's much the same shtick from the new Kangoo - a panel van with windows and sliding rear doors.
Bigger than its predecessor in every direction, the new Kangoo sits on a wider, longer platform and boasts loads more interior space, so there should be plenty of space for flatpack furniture and stunted livestock and so forth. The new Kangoo will hit the road early next year, and should reach 60mph some time in 2009.

Ford Drops New N.A. Plant Plans

Ford is shelving plans to build a new assembly plant in northernMexico. Instead, Ford has promised the United Auto Workers in its new labor pact to build a small car in the U.S.

Pushing both Ford and GM to build small and alternate fuel vehicles in plants staffed by union members was one of the top goals of UAW President Ron Gettelfinger in the recent contract negotiations. Gettelfinger had warned in speech to the Detroit Economic Club that small car production was in danger of leaving the U.S. altogether in the next few years.

Ford Under the new agreement with the UAW, which was ratified last week by union members at Ford, the company has agreed to keep open five plants, including assembly plants in Louisville, Ky., and Wayne, Mich. The Wayne plant now builds the Ford Focus and will be retooled for the replacement for the Focus, which is now in the company's new product pipeline. Ford also agreed to extend for another year, until 2009, the life of the assembly plant in St. Paul, Minn., where Ford now builds its Ranger pickup.

Ford CEO Alan Mulally said overall the new UAW contract terms significantly improve Ford's competitiveness and will allow the company to be profitable at a lower sales volume and mix of vehicles that include fewer trucks and more passenger cars. The changes in healthcare included in the agreement will save the company almost $2 billion annually, Ford officials said.

Ford had first announced it might build a new, low-cost assembly line when it unveiled its "Way Forward" turnaround plan in January 2006. A key contingent of Ford officials wanted the plant in northern Mexico but the UAW lobbied against it, particularly since it would doom one of Ford's major assembly plants in the U.S.

The planning for the Mexican plant was well developed and as late as last June, Mark Fields, Ford president of the Americas, told TheCarConnection.com, the plans were still being actively reviewed.Ford says it retains the right to shutter assembly if business conditions dictate cuts in production.

But Honda's FCX takes the technology to an entirely new level.

"The FCX Clarity is a shining symbol of the progress we've made with fuel cell vehicles and of our belief in the promise of this technology," proclaims American Honda president and CEO Tetsuo Iwamura. "Step by step, with continuous effort, commitment and focus, we are working to overcome obstacles to the mass-market potential of zero-emissions hydrogen fuel-cell automobiles."

While the first retail customers will still have to wait a few months, we were given the chance to take the FCX for a spin around Los Angeles, starting out in Santa Monica, then heading up the coast to fire-ravaged Malibu . During our time behind the wheel, we had the chance to put the fuel-cell vehicle through a variety of different situations, from city streets to open highways, charging up steep inclines and around twisty canyon roads. And our overall impression? Well, we'll get to that, in a moment.

What's New for 2008
The Buick Lucerne becomes a safer, more upscale sedan for 2008. Stability control is now optional on V6 models, and all Lucernes now offer an optional lane departure warning system and a "Side Blind Zone Alert" system that warns the driver when other vehicles enter the Buick's blind spots. Later in the model year, the retro-inspired Lucerne Super model arrives to top the range. The Super features a more powerful V8, upgraded suspension and unique styling cues inside and out. The CXL model loses its optional V8 this year, but high-end CXS models gain a power tilt-telescoping steering column.

The 2008 Buick Lucerne has quite a standard to uphold. As Buick's flagship car, the Lucerne represents the American brand most synonymous with big sedans. It also carries the responsibility of retaining the loyal customer base that likes Buicks just the way they've always been: soft, roomy and comfy.

For those buyers, this full-size sedan lands pretty close to the target. The Lucerne is one of the largest cars on the road, featuring enough room for five adults (six with the optional front bench seat) and an interior with easy-to-use controls. It rides quietly and reacts to bumps with the gentle motions its older customers prefer. Finally, Buick stands above much of its import-brand competition by offering a V8 engine in addition to a V6.

For 2008, the Lucerne gains features that widen its appeal. Chrysler’s ’08 Detroit Concepts Go Hybrid

Chrysler has provided an advance preview of its three concept cars for the Detroit show, about seven weeks in advance of the preview days when they'll be formally revealed to the press. But we can understand why they're quick on the trigger; if these concepts are any indication, the automaker, which has long been resistant to change and slow to adopt hybrids, isn't going to make the same mistake with electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-ins (PHEVs).

Chrysler’s  Detroit ConceptsChrysler’s  Detroit Concepts-2Chrysler’s  Detroit Concepts-3With each of these, Chrysler aims to pair excitement with environmental friendliness for each of the concepts, which are primarily powered by an electric motor system and advanced, yet-to-be-developed lithium-ion battery pack.They all appear to achieve this duality, but that's about where the similarities end. Looking at details for each of the particular concepts, they span a wide range in terms of size, design intent - and mechanically, each uses a different approach toward what Chrysler calls a "range extender" for the powertrain.

In the case of the Chrysler ecoVoyager concept, that range extender is a small hydrogen fuel cell, allowing a total range of more than 300 miles. The mid-size ecoVoyager is a sleek, rounded one-box design - looking like a low-slung crossover vehicle - that's said to celebrate "the romance of automobile travel embodied in a four-door, four-passenger distinctively American design," with elegance, simplicity, and serenity as priorities. Without the powertrain occupying its traditional place in front, the Chrysler promises to be extremely roomy inside and "really make the most of cab forward once again," according to design chief Trevor Creed. A 200 kW (approximately 250 hp) motor would power the ecoVoyager with enough gusto to reach 60 mph in less than eight seconds.

The Dodge ZEO is a four-passenger, 2+2 sport wagon and takes a nearly opposite design direction from the Chrysler, with a long hood, rearward cabin, and monster 23-inch wheels. The ZEO, according to Creed, a "new, responsible breed of muscle car for the 21st Century." And with a larger lithium-ion battery pack to yield a 250-mile driving range, plus a powerful 200 kW electric motor with the juice to rip out zero-to-sixty times of less than six seconds, it would be a pure EV geared for driving enthusiasts.

2008 Saturn Aura Hybrid Vehicle Overview

Introduction
Thomas Jefferson may object, but all hybrids are not created equal. They are each endowed by their creators with different unalienable capabilities, which affect emissions, fuel economy and the pursuit of green envy. The 2008 Saturn Aura Green Line wears a hybrid badge and features a gasoline-electric power plant, but its capabilities pale in comparison to other hybrid-labeled sedans. Acceleration, emissions and most importantly, fuel economy, are far below average. This Saturn is the cheapest sedan (not counting the Prius) to wear a hybrid badge, but like so much in life, you certainly get what you pay for.

At the heart of the Aura Green Line (and its underwhelming performance) is an electric motor/generator that provides only 4 kilowatts of electric boost to the 164-horsepower four-cylinder engine. The motor is capable of motivating the Aura on electricity alone up to 3 mph, but it's mostly used to start the engine when it automatically shuts off at traffic lights and other stopping situations.

By comparison, the Camry Hybrid features a 30-kilowatt electric motor that can power the vehicle by itself under light acceleration to speeds of almost 30 mph. This difference is key in city driving and stop-and-go traffic, where the Camry and other "full" hybrids like the Prius and Nissan Altima Hybrid rely heavily on electric propulsion. The Aura's electric motor doesn't have enough juice to sufficiently boost acceleration or fuel economy, resulting in disappointing results for both.

Independent of its hybrid system, the Saturn Aura is an attractive family sedan that provides plenty of space, features and style. Its interior quality is a little hit or miss, but in general, most buyers will find it a pleasant way to get around. Sadly, most of the regular Aura's European-bred handling capabilities have been sapped out of the Green Line. Smaller wheels and tires can be blamed for this, along with the lifeless electric power steering (versus hydraulic) that makes driving it as much fun as taxation without representation.

2008 Buick Enclave Review

Introduction
Buick wants to be known as a premium automaker, but none of the vehicles the brand has rolled out over the last five years have fully lived up to their luxury billing. The 2008 Buick Enclave could be the one that breaks Buick's mediocrity streak.

2008 Buick Enclave2008 Buick Enclave2At first glance, the Enclave is just another new crossover SUV with a standard V6, a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and seven- and eight-passenger seating configurations. But step inside and it's a different story from other Buicks. The cabin doesn't look like it was built to a price; rather, it comes across as a product of thoughtful design, with artistic curves to the dash, shapely front seats and Tiffany Blue-inspired illumination. On the whole, the '08 Enclave is a step up for Buick and a viable entry in the premium crossover SUV class.

The Enclave still shares its underpinnings with GM's latest batch of crossover SUVs, including the Saturn Outlook and GMC Acadia. All use fully independent suspension, and all have an all-aluminum 3.6-liter V6 good for 275 hp, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Interior dimensions are massive by midsize SUV standards. Not only can the Enclave accommodate adults in all three rows, it has a maximum cargo capacity of 116 cubic feet -- more room than most full-size sport-utilities. A 60/40-split, fold-flat third-row seat is standard in every Enclave, and in keeping with the Buick's upscale mission, twin captain's chairs are fitted in the second row. For families who need even more seating capacity, a bench seat is available for no extra charge, and conveniently, this seat also folds flat. Cloth upholstery and rich-looking wood-grain trim are standard in all Buick Enclaves, and leather is included on the upscale CXL model. All the expected safety equipment, including stability control and three-row side curtain airbags, is standard across the board.

Built in July and August of 1958 it was produced for North American Export and sent to Gibraltar for sale. Originally painted Healey Blue with blue interior, currently the exterior has been painted black with red trim and a rich black interior with red pin stripping. This BN6 is the highly desired 2 seat design vs. the majority of Healeys you see on the market today that are 4 seat models. Everything has been rebuilt on the car: engine, gearbox (which has overdrive), rear end, brakes, chrome, and interior. It has a new top that has never been erected, along with new side curtains. The standard 48 spoke wire wheels have been replaced with 72 spoke chrome wheels with new radial tires mounted. Also, the standard front drum brakes have been replaced with newer disc brakes. 2007 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid Concept

Two months ago at the Frankfurt Auto Show, Porsche announced its plans for building a hybrid version of theCayenne sport-utility vehicle. Now, at the L.A. Auto Show, Porsche showed the concept for the vehicle, which is due to arrive before the end of this decade.

2007 Porsche Cayenne To give the public an idea of what such a version has under its skin, the German company also put up a see-through and cut-away version of the Cayenne Hybrid.

Porsche claims that its full parallel hybrid system will cut fuel consumption by some 15 percent, without sacrificing its performance and driving dynamics. The hybrid system uses a gasoline engine and an electric motor, which will operate together or independently. The future production model is expected to achieve approximately 26 mpg.

2009 Ford F-150 Spy Shots!

One of our contacts stumbled upon an essentially undisguised prototype of Ford's redesigned F-150. As the sunlight was just about to slip behind the mountains, they managed one revealing shot as the truck rushed back to the safety of its enclosed trailer, parked up the street at a gas station.

2009 Ford F-1502009 Ford F-150-2Considering that every F-Series prototype seen to date has been covered from stem to stern in heavy black camouflage, it appears that we caught this unclad look at Ford's new truck at the tail end of a photo shoot. The prototype truck was loaded and covered before our impromptu spies could swoop in for more shots.

This cleanest-ever look at the new F-Series reveals Ford's surprisingly cautious approach on its new truck. Although significant engineering changes likely lie under the surface, it now seems clear that the visual changes represent little more than a thorough facelift.

The headlights, hood, grille, and front bumper have been changed, and it appears that this truck has a version of Ford's Edge-inspired grille. New taillights are also clearly in the cards. The front and rear fenders also show a very subtle change--a sharp-edged character line sculpted in above the F-Series' flared wheel arches adds some minor detailing to the side panels. New side mirrors, and a revised side trim strip round out the visual changes.

Expect a clear look at the new F-150 at January's Detroit auto show.

Ferrari's newest berlinetta, the 430 Scuderia, made its North American debut at last week's auto show inLos Angeles.

The Scuderia offers more performance with its 4.3-liter V-8 engine, tuned in this iteration to produce 20 additional horsepower. With a noticeably low power-to-weight ratio, the F430 Scuderia sprints from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, Ferrari says.

According the Maurizio Parlato, President and CEO of Ferrari North America, the new Scuderia has a racing soul that symbolizes the excitement and passion that tifosi expect.

We'll hold our breath until they let us drive one - which won't be anytime soon, since only 250 copies of the 430 Scuderia will be available in 2008.

Porsche Carma concept

Ceci n'est pas une Porsche....So this is what happens if you put the French in charge of designing a Porsche.
This is the Carma concept, a design study whipped up by four students at the Institute Superieur de Design. The brief was to create a more aerodynamically efficient Porsche, and there's an awesome array of aero-trickery housed with the Carma's curvaceous exterior.

Porsche Carma conceptMost impressive of these is the internal spoiler, concealed below the bulbous 928-esque rear end.
At speed, that rear section slides a few inches backwards from the rest of the body, revealing a pair of intakes above the mid-mounted flat-six that suck air under the Carma's skin. The air is then channelled out the rear of the car, creating downforce to keep the back end stable.

If that all sounds a bit strange, have a look at the movie on the official site and things should make a touch more sense.

The Carma also features a two venturi tunnels that run the length of the underfloor, increasing ground effect and sucking the car down to the road.

Of course, we ought to stress that this is a totally unofficial impression of the Porsche of the future. But we like it, even if it would be a bugger to reverse park.

Introduction
The only way the 2008 Lincoln Navigator could be flashier and more "blingtastic" would be if it came with a flashing orange neon sign bolted to the roof advertising "Free Cristal." The front end is adorned with not one, but two huge chrome grilles complete with an optional chrome hood mustache and a Lincoln cross logo so big it could double for a religious icon. No one will deny the Navigator gets your attention, as it makes even the Escalade look subtle. If that sounds like a good thing to you, read further.

The Navigator's interior looks like Lincoln traveled back in time, collected some of its designers from 1975 and brought them back to the future to fashion the retro cabin with modern materials. The only things the Navigator's missing are a disco ball, blue velour upholstery and Donna Summer on the eight-track.

Powertrains and Performance
The 2008 Navigator is powered by the same 5.4-liter V8 that drives other Ford trucks. It's good for 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque, and sends its power through a six-speed automatic transmission. Buyers have a choice of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. For 2008, the rear-wheel-drive Navigator has an EPA fuel economy estimate of 12 mpg city/17 mpg highway; this is about average for a large luxury SUV. Properly equipped, the rear-drive Navigator can pull 8,950 pounds.

Like the coupe on which it’s based, the Shelby GT convertible is hopped up from a more pedestrian Mustang GT convertible through the use of a number of Ford Racing bolt-ons.

Hennessey Venom GT Concept Car

1000 BHP + 2700 lb Mid-Engine Chassis = New Benchmark of Sports Car Performance
HOUSTON, TEXAS (November 20, 2007) - Hennessey Performance Engineering today announced that it is introducing the company's first concept car - The Venom GT.

Hennessey Venom GT Penned by British auto designer, Steve Everitt, the Venom GT would incorporate Hennessey's potent Venom 1000 Twin Turbo Viper V10 powerplant into a light weight mid-engine chassis weighing "under 2,700 lbs". Power would be run through a 6-speed transmission or optional sequential gearbox.

With a power to weight ratio of just 2.7 lbs per bhp Hennessey estimates that the Venom GT could attain 0 to 100 km/h times in less than 2.5 sec. and a 0-300 km/h time of around 14 seconds. Company founder, John Hennessey, is careful to point out that the Venom GT is not being built as a "Veyron Slayer". Hennessey point out, saying, "The Veyron is an ultra fast and ultra luxurious grand touring car which also happens to be quicker and faster than any other road car, except for our Venom 1000 Twin Turbo SRT which beat the Veyron earlier this year from 0-200 mph. The Venom GT will be a much more engaging sports car to drive by challenging the driver with 1000+ HP in a chassis that is nearly 1500 lbs lighter than the Veyron."

Hennessey said, "The company already has existing Venom 1000 Twin Turbo clients interested in ordering the lighter, mid-engined Venom GT. "Right now are taking a serious look at building 2 concept cars that could be shown to the public sometime in 2009. If there is enough demand we may consider doing a very limited production run of the Venom GT."

If the Venom GT goes into production, it would be built at the company's facility at Lonestar Motorsports Park which is located just west of Houston, Texas.

Four-door Fiesta heads east

Ford has revealed the second in its trilogy of Verve concepts, and this time it's a four-door that points to the design of the next generation Fiesta saloon.

,Ford Fiesta,Ford Fiesta-2,Ford Fiesta-3We saw the handsome little three-door back in Frankfurt, but this bigger variant has been unveiled at the Guangzhou motor show in China.

That's because the saloon Fiesta will likely be an Asia-only model - we in Europe will instead get the three- and five-door hatches. It's an indication of just how seriously the big manufacturers are taking the emerging markets in the Far East.

Ford is calling the four-door Verve a 'notchback', a term we'd more commonly associated with classic three-box saloons, whereas this is a far more flowing, curvaceous design. From the B-pillar forward it's identical to the three-door Verve, but adds a Mondeo-style rear end with high-mounted two-piece taillights.

The frameless doors won't make it to production - and we can't imagine those 20-inch 12-spokes coming as standard - but Ford says the four-door gives 'an advanced indication' of its design philosophy.

The final instalment in the Verve trilogy - likely a taller, mini-SUV concept - will be revealed at the Detroit show in January.

After remaining dormant for several years, electric cars are surging back into the news. First, there was the summer debut of the documentary Who Killed the Electric Car? followed soon after by the announcement in Los Angeles of the Tesla roadster, a $100,000 electric sports car built by a Silicon Valley entrepreneur.

Its maker, Tesla Motors, of San Carlos, California, claims it’ll zap 60 mph in four seconds, juice it to 130 mph, and spin the meter for up to 250 miles between charges (the GM EV1 did up to 150 miles). And, unlike the Lotus, the Tesla Signature One Hundred Collector’s Edition (the first 100 cars, in other words) will have a cup holder.

Changes to the Elise structure accommodate the Tesla’s higher curb weight — it’s 2500 pounds, says the company, about 500 more than an Elise — and allow a larger cockpit and a comfort level above that of a kielbasa casing. Lotus Engineering performed much of the rework, and the Tesla will be assembled on the Elise line in Hethel, England.

The proliferation of hand-held electronics and the subsequent development of small, stout lithium-ion batteries to power them for days without charge are what make the Tesla possible, says Eberhard. Think of the pack as 6831 batteries measuring 1.0 by 2.6 inches, about the same size as a C battery. With a 220-volt, 70-amp charger made by Tesla that is hard-wired into your garage, the roadster will go from flat to flat-out in 3.5 hours. The car will be offered with a cord and a conventional 120-volt wall plug, should you be away from home, but charging time stretches to 33 hours. The pack will be warranted for five years or 100,000 miles.

The Tesla has a three-phase, 248-hp motor with a 13,500-rpm redline. A solenoid-operated two-speed manual transmission performs gear reduction and torque multiplication. A/C, anti-lock brakes, and airbags are part of the standard kit.

A writer might associate the word "ancient" with "mariner" in deference to Samuel Taylor Coleridge's famous poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner". That's a correct association in literature, but incorrect in connection with cars or small SUVs, where "Mariner" brings to mind Mercury. The Mercury Mariner is not exactly ancient, having been introduced in 2005. And besides, it gets a suite of major updates for 2008.

More external sheetmetal has been changed than not, and inside, the 2008 Mariner is meant to foretell the look of future Mercurys. As ever, that interior has more space than might be imagined looking at the compact exterior, and some trick new standard and optional storage schemes.

PERFORMANCE:
If the exterior and interior are new, the engine compartment is familiar. The Mariner's V6 is the venerable 3.0 liter twin cam, 24-valve alloy Duratec. With 200 horsepower (at 6000 rpm) and 193 lb-ft of torque (at 4850), it has plenty of power for everyday use, and revisions over the years have improved refinement levels. The four-speed automatic transmission is well-suited to the Mariner's niche in life. Ditto for the "Intelligent 4WD" four-wheel drive system. It operates in front-wheel drive mode most of the time, and uses a computer-controlled center clutch to engage the rear wheels as needed. Input from sensors at each wheel and the accelerator pedal allows the computer to determine the necessary torque split, transparently to the driver.

Volvo Hikes Price on Redesigned 2008 V70

IRVINE, Calif. — Volvo said on Wednesday that its redesigned 2008 V70 will start at $33,210, including a $745 destination charge. That is $2,470 more than the outgoing 2007 V70.

2008 V70The 2008 V70 gets a new standard engine, a 3.2-liter inline-6 that generates 235 horsepower. The base 2007 V70 is equipped with a 2.4-liter five-cylinder engine that generates 168 hp.

Standard features on the '08 V70 include what the Swedish automaker describes as "the world's first dual-stage built-in booster cushions" for children.

New for 2008 is an optional collision-avoidance package with adaptive cruise control, collision warning and lane-departure warning systems priced at $1,695.

What this means to you: You get a more powerful V70 with some state-of-the-art safety items, so the price increase shouldn't be too hard to swallow. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

The hardware and engineering

The chassis system is rounded out by upgraded 4 wheel disc brakes with ABS and traction control. This performance brake system features 15” vented, slotted rotors with 6 piston calipers in the front and 11.8” rear vented discs with single piston calipers in the rear.

Production and pricing
The new S302E is slated to begin production in early December with advanced orders being accepted as early as November 16th. “Producing only 100 Extreme units this year, the limited number production run will allow us to build the car and deliver the Extreme to a customer a few days after the customer places their order. Retailing for $79,995, we are confident that our buyers will be very hard pressed to find another vehicle with this performance, this level of balance, and a factory warranty for this price,” says McCammon.

The Hardware

The H302 began production in October and the H302SC is slated to begin production in early December. The naturally aspirated H302 production will be limited to 500 units and the supercharged car will be more exclusive at only 200 units. Both the H302 and the H302SC feature a manufacturer’s bumper to bumper warranty; 3 years and 36000 miles on the H302 and 12 months and 12,000 miles on the H302SC. “We tried to make sure that we kept the vehicles attainable while maintaining their exclusivity,” says McCammon. The base price of the H302 is set at $56,999 with the H302SC slightly higher at $74,999.

2007 Racer X Design KC427 Concept

2007 L.A. Auto Show Volkswagen Unveils Cleanest Jetta TDI Clean Diesel Engine

LOS ANGELES — Volkswagen rolled with the low-emissions juggernaut at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show, unveiling a new "cleanest diesel ever" that will be an option on its 2009 Jetta sedan and SportWagen. VW said the engine will give 30 percent better "real-world fuel economy" compared with the same model equipped with a gasoline engine.

Volkswagen Jetta TDIThe 16-valve 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI engine makes 140 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. It has a common-rail fuel supply and high-pressure injectors, as well as a nitrous oxide storage catalyst that reduces NOx emissions as much as 90 percent.

The new diesel will be available on '09 Jetta models in the third quarter of 2008, VW announced. No prices were released.

2007 L.A. Auto Show Environmental Activist Disrupts Unveiling of Beefier 2008 Toyota Sequoia

LOS ANGELES — The 2008 Toyota Sequoia's debut at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show was marred by a belligerent encounter between a Toyota executive and an environmental activist posing as another industry official on Wednesday.

He asked Bob Carter, Toyota Motor Sales USA vice president and general manager, why Toyota is suing California over carbon-dioxide emissions regulations.

Police escorted the man outside the convention center, where he chewed his credential in his mouth before handing it over. The company is not expected to press charges.

In the meantime, Toyota showed off a second-generation Sequoia with a new body, new interior, new chassis and a new optional 5.7-liter V8 with a six-speed automatic transmission. The new engine churns out 381 horsepower, which Toyota notes is "one of the highest outputs in this vehicle class." The carryover 4.7-liter V8 is still standard on the big SUV.

The EPA says the 2008 Sequoia equipped with the 5.7-liter V8 returns 13 mpg in city driving and 18 mpg on the highway. In comparison, the 4.7-liter V8 returns 13 mpg in city driving and 16 mpg on the highway.The new Sequoia is bigger than the previous model, with increases in overall length, width and height.

2008 Ford Focus

We've all been hankering for a new Focus for a while now. We loved the Focus when it first rolled off the assembly line (Focus won Automobile of the Year in 2000.) Since then, though, Ford's small car has become a bit dated. OK, really dated.

2008 Ford Focus2008 Ford Focus-2The 2008 model will be the first update to the Focus line since a freshening in 2003. The styling, while certainly new and unique, hasn't won many fans in our office. New safety features include standard side and side curtain air bags, but the really exciting upgrade is the Ford Sync system. The Focus is the first member of the Ford family to get the cool new technology, which integrates all of the car's electronics and makes them accessible through voice commands. The Sync will also connect to cell phones and portable music players.

Prices for the new Focus start at $14,695. If the options stay in line with last year, a fully loaded Focus will run about $19,000. Even if it is a bit strange looking, we don't think Ford will have any problem selling lots of the cars. The real question is whether or not the new Focus can capture our affection the way the first one did.

LOS ANGELES — The all-new, three-row Toyota Sequoia is bigger inside and out and borrows heavily from the technicals of the Tundra pickup truck. Two engines are offered.

Mileage isn't great—14/19 city/highway—though a hybrid option is in the works. Inside, the three-row seats lean, fold, slide and otherwise alter themselves to add to passenger comfort. The center seat can slide a short distance to place a baby seat closer to mom and dad.

The way-back seats fit three and have a recline option. And they power-fold flat into the floor. On the road, all is quiet and smooth. Cabin noises are close to sedan-level, even on rutted road surfaces. However, the steering gets almost too light at highway speeds. Prices should start at just more than $33,000. —Jim Dunne

It's not the production version of the new Q5 small SUV - that likely awaits a Geneva motor show introduction next year - but Audi's new Cross Cabriolet quattro concept carries some hints as to what the Q5 will do and look like when it bows next year.

The two-door, four-seat concept blends sport-ute traits with a convertible body, as the name indicates.

The engine motivating the concept is a six-cylinder turbodiesel with 240 horsepower. A version of Audi's new 3.0-liter turbodiesel six, the new engine comes with an ultra-low emission system using urea aftertreatment that meets European standards for the year 2014. The concept's engine is teamed with a a Tiptronic eight-speed automatic. Audi claims a 0-60 mph time of less than 7.2 seconds.

Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system is of course beneath the Cross Cabriolet's skin. It is set up to push torque to the wheels in a 40/60 front-rear split. Under extreme circumstances the system can deliver 65 percent of available torque to the front wheels, or 85 percent to the rears. Adjustable shocks and ride height are baked into the all-road gear, and derived in part from the applications found in the current Q7 SUV.

2007 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Concept

Hyundai's new Concept Genesis Coupe has been unveiled, as Hyundai plans a production Genesis sedan for January's Detroit auto show and a production coupe for April's New York auto show.

Hyundai's front-drive coupe has too loyal a following to abandon, so Hyundai will eventually offer both front- and rear-drive sports coupes as it adds a performance spin to its lineup.

Hyundai is aiming the Coupe at a gap in the market, between the Infiniti G37 and Mitsubishi Eclipse - the high $20,000 range. And while Ford's Mustang would seem to be a natural competitor, Hyundai's Krafcik confirms that the production Coupe won't be getting a V-8 engine. Instead, a turbocharged four will be the base powerplant; an optional 3.8-liter V-6 will churn out more than 300 hp. Both engines will be offered with six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. Hyundai estimates a 0-60 mph time of less than six seconds for the six-cylinder version with a manual transmission.

The production version of the Genesis Coupe goes on sale in the spring of 2009.

Renault Wagons Up the Clio

The Renault Clio has been a massively popular supermini inEurope ever since its launch in 1991. It's grown larger over the years too, with the current Clio III the biggest yet.

Renault ClioBut the French supermini is about to get an extra dose of space and practicality with the first-ever estate (wagon) version. To be badged the Sport Tourer, it takes many of its styling cues from the Grand Tour Concept, which was unveiled at Geneva earlier this year.

The car is 165.3 inches in length, but with 15.5 cubic feet of luggage space at the rear it's designed to cater for the leisure lifestyle market rather than the serious load-lugger. After a debut at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show the car will go on sale in Europe early next year.

It's a busy exhibition for Renault, with five new production car debuts - including the Clio Sport Tourer - and two concepts.

2007 Mercedes-Benz F700 Concept

Mercedes-Benz' display at this week's Frankfurt auto show will include the F700, a dazzling and dizzying collection of technology bundled into a concept-car body that could be an early preview of the next S-Class sedan.

Despite its small size of 1.8 liters, it can deliver 238 hp of power. That's more than a standard 3.5-liter V-6 gas engine or a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel. The electric hybrid motors add another 20 horsepower. All told, the drivetrain could propel the F700 to 62 mph in about 7.5 seconds, on its way to a top speed of more than 120 mph - more than useful power, though not quite SLR-speedy.

The DiesOtto is more efficient because it's a smaller, more compact design, and uses two-stage serial turbocharging. Running on gas, it has a spark plug at the top of each cylinder, but they don't fire on every cycle. If the driver accelerates hard they will spark, but if he's being more gentle, ignition of the fuel/air mix is caused by compression - as in a diesel - so the spark isn't needed. Mercedes calls this innovation Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI).

Cost is an issue with the engine - diesel cars are already more expensive because the engines cost more to make. The expensive extra technology involved on the DiesOtto will be an issue vehicle manufacturers will have to address, as GM is also experimenting with a similar concept.

The fishlike silhouette, combined with the long wheelbase, creates a dramatically larger interior that enabled designers to pencil in a new seating concept in the rear. Known as REVERSE, the setup uses a rear-hinged right rear door and movable right-rear seat to create a new environment behind the driver and front passenger. The movable seat can be positioned in the traditional spot - or, the front passenger seat can be folded down and the right-rear seat can be rotated so that rear passengers can face each other in conversation. Leather and cork trim dress up the interior.

2009 Chevrolet Aveo 5 Preview

Chevrolet's new Aveo5 hatchback makes its public debut today at the Los Angeles auto show, with a pricetag that will make it the least expensive vehicle sold in the U.S. when it goes on sale next year, Chevrolet says.

2009 Chevrolet Aveo 5 2009 Chevrolet Aveo 5 -2The new Aveo5 will also get 26/34 mpg, thanks to a fuel-efficient 1.6-liter four with 107 horsepower and 106 pound-feet of torque, and either a five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic. A driving range of 400 miles is promised.

Available in base, LS, and LT versions, the Aveo5 arrives wearing new sheetmetal with a more sophisticated look than the previous version (the Aveo four-door sedan was renewed last year). Built in South Korea by GM Daewoo, the Aveo5 carries Chevrolet's new signature front-end styling, with a gold Chevy bow framed by a larger grille. Larger taillamps and an available rear spoiler dress up the basic econobox look nicely.

In terms of running gear, the Aveo5 is strictly by-the-numbers Asian economy car: MacPherson struts, a torsion-beam rear, and a short 97.7-inch wheelbase. Fourteen-inch wheels are standard, while 15-inchers (and anti-lock brakes) are optional.

Saab Turbo X Bows in Frankfurt

Saab had gripping news forFrankfurt, where it officially revealed the latest spin-off of its newly-redesigned 9-3 line. The 9-3 Turbo X will be the first model to make use of the automaker's all-new, all-wheel-drive technology, or as Saab prefers to call it, Cross-Wheel-Drive. (Saab will now take the development lead for all AWD technology used on GM's transverse engine vehicles worldwide.)

Saab Turbo XThe intelligent system will also deliver a nice boost of power, the Turbo X pumping out 280 hp from its blown 2.8-liter engine, compared with just 255 hp for a standard 9-3 2.8T. That should yield 0-60 times in the range of 5.7 seconds, making the Turbo X among the fastest Saabs ever.

Saab insists the system is more than just a new name for old technology. By mating its version of all-wheel-drive to an electronic, limited-slip differential, the Turbo X and subsequent production models will be able to shift torque not only from front-to-back, but also between the rear wheels. It's not as sophisticated a system as Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive, Saab officials acknowledge, but it will also be markedly lighter and, they promise, less expensive. (Look for an option price of around $2000 or less as it's integrated into the rest of the 9-3 lineup).

2009 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione

This gorgeous two-seat coupe turns out to be the latest chapter in the on-again/off-again thriller that centers on the chances that Alfa Romeo will one day soon be reunited with U.S. buyers. The 450-hp 8C Competizione is, we’ve been assured repeatedly, a certainty to reach our shores. We might even say we’re confident that by the end of 2007 Americans will be able to drive away from the local Maserati dealership in an Alfa.

At a cost of about $175,000, 500 will be built for European consumption and will have to be ordered directly from Alfa’s home office in Italy. Stateside, Maserati will sell a production run of 99 of these cars for about $200,000 apiece. A special facility at Maserati’s headquarters in Modena has been set up to build the 8C. Production is set to start next September. Alfa expects to build 600 of these cars over 18 months and then cease production.

The engine under the long hood of the 8C is a version of Maserati’s V-8. Enlarged to 4.7 liters with an expected output of 450 horsepower, the engine will drive the rear wheels via a rear-mounted six-speed transmission or a sequential-manual gearbox. Under the curvaceous carbon-fiber-composite skin is a steel unibody similar to that of the Maserati Coupé. Alfa toyed around with producing a convertible, but that idea has been abandoned. We’re just hoping Alfa doesn’t abandon the whole idea of selling cars here.

On the style spectrum, the MKS lands between the Lincoln MKZ (formerly Zephyr) and the sexy MKR concept that kept bringing us back to the Lincoln stand at the Detroit show in January to double-check that it was really wearing a Lincoln badge.

The MKS will launch with a new 3.7-liter V-6 that won’t be shared with Ford or Mercury brand vehicles, says Derrick Kuzak, group vice president responsible for global product development. It produces 270 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, which is up 20 lb-ft over Ford’s 3.5-liter V-6 upon which it is derived. It is similar to the 3.7-liter engine in the Mazda CX-9. It is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift to manually select gears.

And for the 2010 model year, the MKS will get a new gasoline direct-injection turbo-charged V-6, the start of the rollout of the TwinForce powertrain initiative Ford has promised to boost performance in a fuel-efficient manner. The Lincoln will be the first vehicle to offer the automaker’s new DI technology that we knew was coming, after the automaker threw a twin-turbo direct-injection 3.-5-liter V-6 in the rear-drive MKR concept. That engine was described as producing 415 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. The MKS may not be twin-turbo, but the writing is on the wall for future models.

2010 Porsche Panamera

Porsche’s much-anticipated 2010 Panamera “four-door coupe” does not go on sale until the fall of 2009, but we caught the four-passenger car doing hot laps at the Nürburgring, revealing a number of 911-esque styling cues, especially in the headlights.

We don't know where else to point the finger for the droopy, bloated rear end. Additionally, we see nothing to get excited about on the side panels, and the profile is—dare we say?—a trite conventional. All in all, the car certainly is no raving beauty, and the use of 17-inch 996 wheels doesn't help. We have to hope these are for the entry-level Panamera, with at least 18-inchers on tap for most models.

Meanwhile, we’ve been working to sort out the pedigree and powertrain for this Mercedes-Benz CLS fighter that Porsche officials tell us is a joint venture with the VW Group—contrary to original statements by Porsche chief Wendelin Wiedeking that Porsche was developing a separate platform for a fourth vehicle in its lineup. Of course, Wiedeking’s assertions in 2005 that there would be no joint venture with another automaker preceded what is amounting to a takeover of Volkswagen by Porsche.

Some of the confusion could stem from reports that the body of the Panamera will be built at a VW plant in Hanover, Germany, with final assembly at Porsche’s Leipzig plant—pretty blatant job sharing at least at the manufacturing level.

The term "performance SUV" comes very close to being an oxymoron. Really, if your number-one goal is performance, a big and boxy sport-utility is usually a poor choice to go about getting it. But for consumers who really like to drive, yet have certain constraints in their life that require an SUV (read: a family), such a vehicle can make a certain amount of sense. Enter the 2008 Acura MDX.

Acura's midsize luxury SUV was redesigned last year. As with the first-generation MDX, it's a car-based crossover SUV with V6 power and seating for seven. But the new model is considerably sportier. It's powered by the largest and most powerful V6 ever to grace an Acura (yes, including the NSX), giving it unparalleled juice and athleticism. With it, Acura promises V8-like performance while still maintaining respectable fuel economy.

Powertrains and Performance
The MDX's sole engine is a 3.7-liter V6 rated at 300 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control, and power is directed to all four wheels through an advanced all-wheel-drive system. In testing, we found the MDX can sprint to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds. Fuel economy, with a 2008 rating of 15 mpg city/20 mpg highway, is average for this segment. When properly equipped, maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds.

What else is new Lexus struggling to develop LF-A supercar

Toyota's showing in Tokyo was rife with disappointments, none more so than what was over at the Lexus booth. Beyond its LF-Xh hybrid crossover, rumor had it that a revised version of the LF-A supercar would make an appearance. No such luck. Instead, the same show car we've seen over the last year stood alone, longing for refinement.

A number of "key engineers" have apparently been yanked off the project to work on other programs within Toyota, and that, partnered with problems providing power from both a V10 and a gas-electric hybrid V8, along with reaching the 218 MPH targeted top speed, has caused delays in development.

The business plan for the LF-A includes building 26 units per month, and sources suggest that sales are likely to begin in 2009 – the same year Acura will bring its own supercar to market.

LOS ANGELES — Nissan appears to have gently tweaked its 2009 Murano as images of the redesigned crossover hit the Internet in advance of its unveiling at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The bulging wheel flares look to be borrowed from the Nissan Rogue and give the Murano more of a muscular appearance.

The new Murano is expected to hit showrooms early next year, with more details forthcoming next week.

BMW slaps a refreshed nose on the 6, plus new prices

BMW released the details on the 2008 6-series today, and after wading through the lengthy press release, the only exterior changes we could come up with is a mildly revised fascia and LED taillamps.

The new cost of entry for the 650i coupe is $76,375, while the 650i convertible comes in at a cool $83,475.

2009 Toyota Corolla Matrix Preview

Toyota says its new Matrix five-door offers "performance that matters" for drivers who want crossover utility in a compact shape.It has - wait for it - the "soul of a two-door sports car," says Tim Morrison, Toyota 's marketing manager.

2009 Toyota Corolla MatrixThe new Matrix will arrive in showrooms early next year in three different versions: Standard, S and XRS. All come with front-wheel drive, but the S versions can also be ordered with all-wheel drive.

Two different engines will be offered. The first is a 132-horsepower, 1.8-liter four with 128 pound-feet of torque. Toyota estimates that with the standard five-speed manual, it will deliver 26/32 mpg. With a four-speed automatic, that drops to 25/31 mpg.The uplevel engine is a 2.4-liter four with variable valve timing and 158 horsepower, along with 162 pound-feet of torque. With a new five-speed automatic transmission, this combination will deliver 21/29 mpg, Toyota says.

Standard safety equipment on all Matrix wagons includes dual front, side, and curtain airbags, along with active headrests and anti-lock brakes. Stability and traction control is standard on the top XRS model, optional on the other versions.

This lightly camouflaged 2009 CTS-V test mule that was spotted somewhere in Colorado gives a good look at what the production model will look like when it goes on sale sometime within the next year.

The front camo does a reasonable job of concealing the hood bulge that accommodates the Corvette ZR1's 600-some horsepower supercharged 6.2-liter V-8's blower (for the CTS-V, the engine may be detuned to somewhere around 580 horsepower), making it look like it's placed too far forward due to an optical illusion. In reality, it is placed just over the engine as it should be, as can be seen in the photo at right. Additionally, a six-speed auto is expected to be offered in the CTS-V for the first time alonside a six-speed manual.

Despite what its sequel-like name suggests, the 2008 Touareg 2 is a midlife refresh of Volkswagen's SUV. Restyled front and rear fascias, additional features and new option packages highlight the changes.

Introduction
Slapping a "2" on the end of a title is typically the signifier of a full-fledged sequel, but the 2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 is more like a re-edited director's cut DVD. Despite the name, VW's first SUV is by and large the same solid vehicle that was sold last year, sporting revised styling and some additional features like standard parking assist and a power liftgate. That's basically the equivalent to new DVD packaging and a couple of director's commentaries.

Powertrains and Performance
Each Touareg 2 trim level comes with a different engine, but all have a six-speed automatic transmission, four-wheel drive and a low-range gear. The VR6 name refers to the narrow-angle 3.6-liter V6 that makes 280 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy for this engine is below average at 16 mpg city/20 mpg highway. The V8 is a 4.2-liter unit that produces 350 hp and 324 lb-ft of torque.

KREFELD, Germany — Arden cut its teeth on British luxury hardware. The Jaguar XK coupe is its latest project, transformed into the red-hot AJ20.

Arden also recalibrates the engine control module and modifies the intake and exhaust systems, fitting sport catalytic converters and four chrome-plated exhaust pipes.

The result is a significant jump in output, to 480 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. Arden says top speed is now 190 mph, and 0-60-mph acceleration takes less than 4.1 seconds.

Suspension modifications include sport shocks and larger 21-inch wheels with 255/35R21 performance tires in front and 295/30R21s in the rear.

The Arden aero body kit includes a front spoiler with large air intakes, side sills with air inlets, a rear apron with cooling slots, and a rear spoiler. Interior upgrades include a choice of high-grade wood and carbon fiber as well as leather and Alcantara upholstery and trim.

Melkus RS2000 Takes Shape

DRESDEN, Germany — Melkus, one of the best-known racing-car builders on the "other" side of the Iron Curtain in the pre-reunification days, is at work on a 21st-century sport coupe. The RS2000 is said to be at the scale model stage, with a prototype planned for 2009.

Melkus RS2000 Melkus RS2000 -2Heinz Melkus, the family patriarch, mostly focused his activities on single-seat racing cars, but between 1969 and 1980 he built around 100 copies of a sleek sport coupe with gullwing doors called the RS1000. The car was built off the somewhat unlikely base of the Wartburg of East Bloc fame. Heinz passed away in 2005, although his family is still actively racing, though now with Lotus Elises.

The Melkus team announced recently that it will build a modern-day version of the original RS1000 coupe as well as the new RS2000. The first drawings and a scale model of the RS2000 have been completed. German media report that the car will weigh somewhere just north of 2,000 pounds and will carry either an Opel engine or a 150-200-horsepower Volkswagen turbo.

The estimated price will be the equivalent of $85,000. A prototype won't be completed until 2009, sources say.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe Coming to L.A.

Hyundai's surprise - or not so much of a surprise, given the key execs on hand - for the SEMA show going on in Las Vegas this week was the release of these sketches of the coupe version of its Genesis concept.
The new two-door will be shown in concept form at the Los Angeles auto show, which opens to the press on Nov. 14.

Hyundai calls these "exaggerated" sketches of what will be a future rear-drive sports coupe from the South Korean automaker.

We're not sure if Hyundai will carry over the Tiburon name to the Genesis - or if Hyundai's global plan for alphanumeric names will apply to U.S. cars - but we do know that this car will first arrive in Asia in late 2008 or 2009, and arrive here in the States for the 2010 model year. A convertible version will follow.Based on the BH/Genesis platform, the new coupe is expected to offer an optional 4.6-liter V-8 as a performance option.

Audi RS6 Avant

Finally, the official announcement of the Audi RS6 Avant has come. The new "monster" from Ingolstadt is really a super-car in all but appeareance: the engine is a 5.2-liter V10 twin-turbo with 580 bhp and a torque of 650 Nm (100 hp more than a Porsche Turbo!). The acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes only 4.6 seconds.

The fenders have a bit more bulge, the twin oval exhaust tubes are quite imposing, there is a discreet rear diffuser, but everything is discreet, no extraneous air intakes, no aerodinamic appendages added almost as an afterthought. Even the led daylights are less flashy than those of the Audi S6.

All in all, the new Audi RS6 Avant appears to be the ultimate family sports car, with 1,660 liters of space in the cockpit, tons of power, the Quattro 4WD system to handle it and a price (in Germany) of 101,000 € which seems pretty reasonable, given the substance of this car.

The SR is propelled by a hybrid engine: A 3.5-liter V6 turbo front mid-engine position has been adopted, that boots up to 610 horsepower. It is designed to run on bio fuels with rear wheel transmission on circuits and race tracks, with the characteristics and
behaviour that of a high-end super sports car. The second front-mounted electric motor would be capable of independently driving the front wheels which would move the SR around cities or countryside in pollution free mode, at moderate speeds and absolute silence.

PS. This car is a styling exercise, and not meant to be in production.

Nissan Finds Happiness With Special-Edition March Model

TOKYO — Nissan has rolled out three special-edition models to mark the 25th anniversary of its March model, including the March 25th Happiness. Two other models, the March Plus Safety and the March Kisekae, were also introduced.

Nissan HappinessEven though you might expect a car named "Happiness" to be covered in rainbows and polka dots, the model actually comes in a subdued Silky Beige exterior color. It is based on the March 12S and 14S Four models, Nissan said. To up the happiness quotient in the cabin, buyers get an "odor-absorbing" headliner and an automatic interior lighting system.

The March Plus Safety is equipped with side airbags for the front passengers, side curtain airbags and xenon headlights. The March Kisekae, which Nissan says is Japanese for "dress up," gets a choice of two seat covers: "Bubbly" and "Striped."

Prices range from the equivalent of $10,700 to $14,125.

2008 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe

Since 2004, Rolls-Royce has been teasing the arrival of a new convertible under the guise of the concept 100EX. At the 2007 Detroit auto show in January, the teasing is no more - and the Phantom Drophead Coupé will arrive in production-ready form.

And it's a step out of the normal Rolls box for the British luxe brand, with softer exterior style and more modern lines. Like the Phantom sedan, it's built on an aluminum space frame. And underhood is the stock Rolls-Royce 6.75-liter, V-12 engine, which the brand says will launch the Drophead to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds.

Stunning details include the brushed steel hood and A-pillar from the 100EX concept shown in 2004, and the teak decking for the convertible top stow area. Trunk space is unaffected by the top storage, Rolls promises. The doors are rear-hinged, as the rear doors are on the Phantom.

Rolls says the Drophead will go into production in the summer of 2007. U.S. prices will start from $407,000.

Driving in the mountains of the French Cote d'Azur is an unexpected December treat - especially when the sun shines warmly and the top of your suave roadster is down.

And while Audi can't control the weather, they can control the elements that go into a great convertible - and the new topless TT proves they can do it well.

Coming to America
The second generation of Audi's new sports car arrived earlier this year, and impressed us with its matured looks and with the excellent handling of both models - the front-wheel-driven 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder and the 3.2-liter V-6 with quattro all-wheel drive.

Both engines will be available in the 2008 TT Roadster that is expected to hit the North American market in September.

Both engines are a delight. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four delivers 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque, and is teamed to a six-speed manual gearbox, while the sequential automatic six-speed S-Tronic transmission will be available. It's a muscular four-cylinder with one of the most linear power deliveries of any turbo powerplant we know.

The 3.2-liter six-cylinder has 250 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque and has the S-tronic transmission (formerly DSG) standard. Its growl is considerably throatier than the turbo four, and it does deliver some additional power, along with a hefty increase in price.

2007 L.A. Auto Show: 600-HP 2008 Dodge Viper SRT-10 ACR

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — When the 2008 Dodge Viper SRT-10 ACR — short for "American Club Racer" — hits showrooms in the second quarter of 2008, it will be priced under $100,000, Chrysler says.

The V10 is linked to the Tremec T56 six-speed manual transmission, dubbed TR6060.

The Viper SRT-10 ACR has exterior cues that immediately telegraph its track-worthiness. Carbon-fiber styling details include a variable geometry "fanged" front splitter, an adjustable rear wing sculpted by CFD or Computational Fluid Dynamics, and optimized front dive planes. "Each Viper SRT-10 ACR also includes a track extension that replaces the center splitter rub strip and fills out the fanged splitter scallop for closed-circuit events," Chrysler says. "The aerodynamic effect of the track extension is a reduction in overall drag and an increase in front downforce of nearly one-third."

Chrysler points out that the Viper SRT-10 ACR is "specifically modified and tuned for track performance." 2007 Racer X Design Alfa Romeo GTV Evoluzione

(from Racerxdesign Press Release) The star of the XLR-8 motor show in Europe, and winner of the best modified classic on show, the GTV Evoluzione was the creation of the racerxdesign team in Malta (a small island in the Mediterranean).

2007 Racer X Design Alfa Romeo GTV Evoluzione2007 Racer X Design Alfa Romeo GTV Evoluzione-2The design is the work of Reuben Zammit and was aimed to incorporate the classic looks of the original Alfa Romeo GTV of the late 70’s, together with a more menacing muscle car touch.

The car was built by hand using only sheet metal by Jean Paul Pisani, and using a scrapped 1979 GTV as a base car. Both the front end and the back end were completely cut off and re-built from scratch, the track was widened by 8” on the front and 9” on the back, using one off wheels designed in-house!

The drive train was replaced by a 3.0 V6 24v last generation Alfa Unit, giving the car a more suitable power output. Brakes were also up rated to 4 pot Brembo calipers and 300mm vented discs, so were the suspension system and chassis in general.

This is not the first award winning creation by this group and it won’t be the last. “We did not want the Evoluzione to be the fashion of the moment. The aim was to keep it looking an Alfa, full of passion” says Reuben “Years will pass and this car will still look stunning”.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage N400 Roadster

Aston Martin will build a Roadster variant of the V8 Vantage N400, a special limited-edition based on the V8 Vantage shown at the latest Frankfurt auto show and dedicated to the legendary Nürburgringer Nordschleife.

The N400 pack consists of a new, more powerful version of the 4.3-litre V8 engine of the Vantage, that on the N400 outputs 400 bhp and 420Nm. The suspension set-up is also different from the softer one of the normal Vantage Roadster.

We can imagine how gratifying will be hearing the ferocious sound of the V8 on this en-plein-air supercar...

Tuner Special: Imsa Murcielago LP640

BRUEGGEN, Germany — The German engineering firm with the racy name, Imsa, first made its mark by transforming various editions of the Lamborghini Gallardo. Now the company has turned its attention to the Gallardo's big brother, the Murciélago LP640.

Murcielago LP640Imsa has adapted carbon-fiber technology from F1 and the world of motorsports to create an aero package for the range-topping Lambo, with a companion kit soon to be available for the standard Murciélago.

Constructed of molded carbon fiber, the Imsa kit includes a front apron, wider wheel arches, front fenders with integral air ducts, side skirts, rear diffuser and spoiler. Imsa says the result is increased downforce and greater high-speed stability.

The tuner also offers multipiece sport wheels, suspension upgrades and a variety of engine modifications. Each car is hand-crafted, inside and out, to the customer's personal specifications.

2008 Infiniti M sedans get new pricing, new features

We always like when automakers offer more bang for the buck. So when Infiniti announced its M sedans have been extensively revised for the new 2008 model year with new styling and features, we were all ears. Infiniti has also released pricing information so you'll know just how much cash you'll need to put up to get one in your garage.

The addition of all-wheel drive in the M35x will set you back $44,800. If you opt for the 325 horsepower 4.5-liter aluminum V-8 model, the M45, Infiniti will ask for $49,350 with the new ATTESA E-TS-equipped all-wheel drive M45x starting at $51,850. Oh, and tack on an extra $715 destination charge to all prices listed above. All M sedans are equipped with a five-speed automatic with a manual shift mode that allows rev-matched downshifts.

Among the exterior revisions to the 2008 M sedan lineup are redesigned front and rear fascias, grille, rear fenders and decklid, taillights, and new chrome accent trim. A choice of new 18- and 19-inch wheels is available as are six new exterior colors and greater differentiation for models equipped with the optional Sport Package (replacing the previous M Sport model). In addition to interior and exterior styling differences (including revised aluminum trim), the Sport Package adds Rear Active Steer (RAS) and 19-inch wheels

2008 Cadillac Escalade Platinum

MIAMI — Cadillac has announced that it will give its 2008 Escalade the "Platinum" treatment with a special-edition model set to make its debut in the spring.

The Escalade Platinum will also have LED headlamps added shortly after the start of production in summer 2008.

Appearance tweaks include a unique front fascia and grille patterned after the Cadillac CTS, along with 22-inch wheels and Platinum badging. In the cabin, the Escalade Platinum gets aniline leather and contrasting-color stitching. Other features include Platinum-specific door sills and floor mats, a heated steering wheel, heated and cooled cupholders, and a power liftgate. The DVD entertainment system bundles screens in the front seat headrests.

The Platinum Escalade is equipped with a 6.2-liter V8 that delivers 403 horsepower and 417 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Pricing has not been announced. The Escalade is the latest in Cadillac's Platinum lineup, which includes the DTS, STS and XLR.

It is very hard to forget a car like Lancia Thema, one of the best luxury sedans ever made in italian automotive history. Especially since it has been replaced by two models that have not been able to repeat the commercial success of the foregoing car.

Thanks to the financial situation of Fiat Group, which is finally healthy, it is now possible to dream of such a remake, that will surely touch many Lancia aficionados' hearts.

InfoMotori.com has published these renderings of the future Lancia Thema, in which the most noticeable trait is the overall elegance coming from stylistic features such as the coupè-like roof (somewhat similar to sport-sedans such as Mercedes-Benz CLS or Jaguar XF), the solid-looking side and the high belt-line.

The back lights look pretty similar to the ones on the Lancia Thesis, thin, vertical and very good looking. Unfortunately the trunk's looks are not as eye-catching as the rest of the body.
