2007 Kleemann GTK Concept based on Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG

(from Kleemann Press Release) In 2004, KLEEMANN made ambitious plans for creating unique and exclusive KLEEMANN sportscars. Now, after 3 years of design and development, KLEEMANN bring their vast technology know-how and experience to the next level by introducing the GTK concept car.

2007 Kleemann GTK Concept2007 Kleemann GTK Concept-2The design project
KLEEMANN, best known for their long experience in Kompressor technology and exclusive styling products for Mercedes-Benz cars, now enters the battlefield of the exclusive sportscar manufacturers. This was made possible when KLEEMANN employed the internationally experienced car designer Christian Brandt. Christian has headed the top secret GTK design project, which was not only a sportscar project, but also a design and technology development platform for future KLEEMANN performance and styling solutions for Mercedes-Benz cars.

Unique performance
The raw performance data for the GTK places it at the very front of the competition: The 0-100 km/h acceleration is done in only 3,7 seconds and the GTK continues the brutal acceleration right up to the electronically limited top speed of 300 km/h. The high performance KLEEMANN brake system featuring 380 mm. vented discs with 8 piston fixed aluminium callipers front and 345 mm. vented discs with 4 piston fixed aluminium callipers rear ensure fast and secure stopping power from any speed.

Nissan GT-R racer

This is our first look at the new Nissan GT-R racer, which will debut in next year's Japanese Super GT series.

Nissan GT-R racerNissan GT-R racer-2Unfortunately for Nissan and its racing/tuning arm, NISMO, this is not a series in which the production car's amazing four-wheel-drive traction will give it an advantage, like the Skyline GT-Rs of old: the cars are built to very specific regulations which outlaw four-wheel-drive and allow bespoke silhouette designs.

This year, the championship was won by a Honda NSX, which beat Nissan's 350Z racer. Whether or not the new GT-R will be more successful remains to be seen, but it shares little with the road-going car. Nissan GT-R Still, it doesn't rob the Super GT car of its visual impact. It's quite something, and it's a shame they'll have to run it with sponsors - this black colour is perfect.

2007 Mazda Taiki Concept

(from Mazda Press Release) Mazda Taiki reflects one possible direction for a future generation of Mazda sports cars aimed at helping create a sustainable society. The fourth concept car in the Nagare design series, Mazda Taiki further evolves the “flow” theme to establish a breathtaking presence that clearly distinguishes it as the next in the series, and which visually expresses the atmosphere – called taiki in Japanese – that wraps the Earth in its protective mantle.

2007 Mazda Taiki Concept2007 Mazda Taiki Concept-12007 Mazda Taiki Concept-2The basic proportions begin with the stretched coupe form of a front-engine rear-wheel-drive layout, the short overhangs, and the liberating feel of an all-glass canopy. The challenge to create “a design that visually expresses the flow of air” was inspired by the image of a pair of Hagoromo – the flowing robes that enable a celestial maiden to fly in Japanese legend – floating down from the sky. Inspired by Japanese koinobori – the decorative “climbing carp streamers”– the notion of creating an Air-tube became the concept word for the interior design. In accordance, from the dashboard and seats down to the door trim, the interior space creates the dynamic sensation that the flow of the wind is being visually depicted. Centering around the performance rotary engine sports packaging that is synonymous with the Mazda name, technologies introduced for the Mazda Taiki include the next-generation RENESIS (rotary engine 16X), which sets new standards for environmental and driving performance, a front-engine rear-drive layout, a unique 2-seat configuration, and Mazda’s rotary sports package, which conveys an image of lightness. The effect integrates the design theme perfectly to realize outstanding aerodynamic performance.

1934 Chevrolet Coupe E85

(from General Motors Press Release) FLEXFUEL CHEVY HOT ROD DEMONSTRATES VINTAGE STYLE AND MODERN ALTERNATIVE-FUEL PERFORMANCE

With a 500-horsepower engine, a channeled body and a chopped top, GM’s custom street rod looks right at home on the salt flats of Bonneville.

1934 Chevrolet Coupe E851934 Chevrolet Coupe E85-2But instead of a traditional gasoline V-8, this ’34 Chevy replica rod sports a turbocharged 2.0L Ecotec engine that runs on E85 ethanol. Appropriately, it has been dubbed the FlexFuel Chevy Hot Rod.

“Since the 1930's, hot rods have embodied American ingenuity, aesthetic flair and the quest for performance," said Bryan Nesbitt, vice-president of General Motors North American Design. "The ethanol Hot Rod is a modern statement that today's hot rodder can address energy concerns about the consumption of petroleum without sacrificing performance or style.”

The car’s low-slung stance and stripped-down essence suggests track cars and speed racers of the late 1940s and early 1950s. Open hood sides reveal the high-powered Ecotec engine, which has been pumped up with the help of GM Performance Parts’ Stage III performance kit and a larger turbo. The higher octane of E85 enabled engineers to tune the engine for more power. It is backed by a GM Powertrain 5L40 five-speed automatic transmission.

A sturdy 8-3/8-inch Winters Quick-change rearend is suspended by a parallel four-link suspension. It is filled with 5.20 gears, which are used to generate brisk acceleration with 35-inch-tall, racing-type Excelsior rear tires and 29-inch-tall front tires. The tires are mounted on custom 18-inch front and 20-inch rear “kidney bean”-style wheels from Budnik.

2008 Infiniti QX56 Review

Summary
If its styling agrees with you, then the rest of the 2008 Infiniti QX56 should, too, thanks to an improved interior and plenty of high-tech goodies.
Pros
High-tech electronic features, powerful and refined V8, impressive balance of ride and handling, massive towing capacity, roomy second- and third-row seats.

2008 Infiniti QX562008 Infiniti QX56-22008 Infiniti QX56-3What's New for 2008
The Infiniti QX56 undergoes its first major freshening since its debut. The 2008 QX56 has subtle styling changes, a significant redesign of its interior and the addition of new standard and optional equipment that brings it more in line with other top, large luxury SUVs.

Powertrains and Performance
The 2008 QX56 is offered with either 2WD or 4WD with low-range gearing. Power comes from a 5.6-liter V8 that produces a healthy 320 horsepower and 393 pound-feet of torque. The V8 is matched to a standard five-speed automatic transmission. The QX56 is quick for a full-size SUV, going from zero to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds. Towing capacity is 9,000 pounds on rear-wheel-drive models when properly equipped. As is typical for this class of vehicle, gas mileage is poor, with 12 mpg city and 17/18 mpg highway using the EPA's revised 2008 testing regimen.

2008 Ford Edge Review

Summary
Strong acceleration, agile handling, a smooth ride and a roomy passenger compartment give the 2008 Ford Edge major points in the midsize crossover segment. Unfortunately, mediocre braking performance sullies its otherwise impressive credentials.

2008 Ford Edge2008 Ford Edge-2Pros
Quiet and comfortable ride, agile handling, potent V6, all major safety features are standard, roomy cabin.
Cons
Questionable brakes, lackluster interior design and materials, low maximum cargo capacity.
What's New for 2008
The 2008 Ford Edge gets more luxury and convenience features. Highlights include Ford's "Sync" system (which allows voice operation of cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players and USB storage devices), an optional power liftgate and a voice-activated navigation system. This year also sees a new Limited trim level, which replaces last year's SEL Plus.

Powertrains and Performance
The Edge comes with a 3.5-liter V6 rated for 265 hp and 250 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. All trim levels offer a choice of either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. On AWD models, power flows primarily to the front wheels until wheel slippage occurs, in which case nearly all the power can be redirected to the rear.

The Edge is quick, with a 0-60-mph time of just 7.4 seconds (front-driver version). Shifts from the six-speed automatic are smooth and well-timed, though we wish there was better manual access to gears. (You're limited to "D," "O/D off" and "L.") Properly equipped, the Ford Edge can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is average for the segment.

2007 SEMA Show: Motocross Is Springboard for Dodge Dakota MX Warrior Concept

LAS VEGAS — The over-the-top graphics on the Dodge Dakota MX Warrior concept at the 2007 SEMA Show make more sense when you understand how one of its co-creators spends his spare time.

Dodge Dakota MX Warrior ConceptDodge Dakota MX Warrior Concept-2Scott Waraniak, a design student at Detroit's College for Creative Studies, is also a motocrosser who races KTM bikes and is no stranger to flying dirt, rocks, adrenaline and horsepower. Hence the orange-and-battleship-gray vinyl wrap on the Dakota MX Warrior laid on top of the "surf blue" exterior. By the way, that's Waraniak's bike in the back of the Dakota, which Dodge likes to promote as more of a personal leisure vehicle instead of a workhorse like its bigger sibling.

The Dakota MX Warrior gets a suspension that's raised 4 inches, 20-inch Mopar chrome wheels and 31-inch tires. Other touches include a custom hood with one-off intake scoopers to feed air into the 4.7-liter Magnum V8. Custom steel bumpers and an integrated winch mounted on the front bumper round out the package.

What this means to you: A must-see if you're into motocross and Detroit muscle.

2007 SEMA Show: Cadillac CTS Sport

LAS VEGAS — The public unveiling of the 2009 CTS-V is still more than two months away. Meanwhile, at the 2007 SEMA Show, Cadillac aims to fill the void with the CTS Sport concept.

Cadillac CTS SportCadillac CTS Sport-2This one looks like mostly a cosmetic package, with few of the high-performance mods expected on the next CTS-V, which is being unwrapped at the upcoming Detroit show and goes on sale next fall.

The CTS Sport gets a variety of exterior add-ons, including new front and rear fascias with carbon-fiber and wire-mesh inserts, a modified hood with wire-mesh inserts and carbon-fiber front fender extractors and rear deck lid spoiler. You'll also spot the forged and polished 20-inch wheels, the painted calipers and drilled/slotted rotors on the high-performance brakes, and the rectangular exhaust tips with wire-mesh inserts.

Inside, the CTS Sport features Recaro leather sport seats and carbon-fiber trim.

Under the hood is a production-based, direct-injection 3.6-liter V6 — a far cry from the supercharged big-bore V8 that's rumored for the new CTS-V.

What this means to you: Look for the real deal in January at the Detroit show.

2007 SEMA Show: Jay Leno Shows off Green 600-HP Modified Corvette Z06

LAS VEGAS — If Al Gore were to make an appearance at the 2007 SEMA Show, there's no doubt that he would find an excellent photo op in front of Jay Leno's E85 Z06-inspired C6RS Corvette. The car's 600 horses aren't an issue, since Leno's rocket runs on ethanol.

Corvette Z06 Corvette Z06-2 Corvette Z06-3"The C6RS is the result of an idea we hatched to prove that high-performance cars and alternative fuel technology weren't diametrically opposed concepts," said Leno, who increasingly sounds like the voice of reason when it comes to automotive trends. "I love the idea of having 600 horsepower at my disposal, but using a homegrown alternative to gasoline."

The C6RS Corvette's fuel system and engine control computer were modified to use E85, with the spent gases exiting through a Corsa exhaust system. The custom 8.2-liter all-aluminum small-block V8 is linked to a strengthened T-56 six-speed transmission and a high-performance Centerforce dual-friction clutch.

The comic did not choose green paint for this SEMA offering. Instead, it is clad in C6.R-inspired black paint. Other design cues include wider front and rear fenders and a wider rear fascia with an integrated spoiler on top and a racing-style diffuser at the bottom. The cabin deliberately veers away from a spartan look, with premium features that include a two-tone shift knob and boot, leather-covered console armrest and racing-style pedal covers.

What this means to you: Leno appears to be committed to giving us the best of both worlds.

2008 Ferrari FXX Evolution

(from Ferrari Press Release) FXX programme extended for further two years thanks to new evolution kit developed with assistance of Client Test-Drivers

2008 Ferrari FXX Evolution2008 Ferrari FXX Evolution-22008 Ferrari FXX Evolution-3The innovative FXX programme, based on the eponymous prototype car and launched by Ferrari in June 2005, is being extended to 2008/2009. The FXX, which is the most advanced GT ever created at Maranello, has been updated with an evolution package aimed at further improving its handling and performance. The package was developed as a result of Ferrari's collaboration with its Client Test Drivers and with the invaluable support of Michael Schumacher. The FXXs equipped with this package will also sport a new livery in addition to new rear wing profiles.

The FXX is not homologated for road use and there are no plans to compete with it either. In fact, the FXX prototype is designed exclusively for track driving as part of a specific R&D programme agreed with a selected group of just over 20 clients involving 14 group test sessions and 14 private ones in the last two years. Thanks to readings taken over the 16,500 kilometres of tests carried out in 2006 and the 18,500 kilometres covered in 2007, the modifications made to the car have focused on honing its aerodynamics, running gear and electronics. Seven-times Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher also joined the ranks of the client test drivers and gave the programme the benefit of his vast experience on several occasions.

Maranello's engineers studied the wealth of information gained to develop a kit which will cut the FXX's Fiorano lap time to under 1'16'' (previously it was 1'18''). The FXX's 6262 cc V12 engine can now punch out a massive 860 hp at 9500 rpm. Gearshifting takes just 60 ms, a drop of 20 ms on the previous time, and the gear ratios have been adapted to make use of the extra 1000 rpm now delivered by the engine.

The FXX evolution package includes participation in a series of track events that Ferrari is organising at international circuits for 2008/2009. Six events are planned for each year (two in North America, two in Europe and two in Asia). In addition to these, the FXXs will also be participating, as per tradition, in the prestigious end-of-season Ferrari World Finals.

2007 SEMA Show: Chevrolet Takes the Wraps off 2008 Cobalt SS Coupe

LAS VEGAS — General Motors used the 2007 SEMA Show to reveal the details about the upcoming 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt SS, which promises to have more kick than the previous Cobalt SS Supercharged.

2008 Chevrolet Cobalt SS2008 Chevrolet Cobalt SS-2GM says the '08 Cobalt SS will churn out 55 more horses than the Cobalt SS Supercharged. The new model uses the 2.0-liter Ecotec turbocharged and intercooled engine with 260 horses linked to a GM Powertrain Sweden five-speed transmission with a short-throw shifter. It sprints from zero to 60 mph in about 5.7 seconds, according to Chevrolet. The coupe was developed by GM Performance Division, which put it through its paces at the Nürburgring circuit.

Chevy noted that the Cobalt SS coupe has powertrain and chassis enhancements that are similar to the new Chevrolet HHR SS, "but with larger Brembo brakes, a slightly taller final-drive ratio and other variances." The Cobalt SS coupe gets a new FE5 Sport suspension with specific stabilizer bars, spring rates and damper tuning. A "no-lift shift" feature on manual-transmission models is said to "achieve the best acceleration time via an algorithm in the engine controller."

What this means to you: The most powerful Cobalt yet.

2008 Ford Sport Trac Adrenaline

(from Ford Press Release) FORD ADDS ‘ADRENALIN’ TO SPORT TRAC FOR 2008

The 2008 Sport Trac Adrenalin is a sport utility truck that combines the utility and functionality of a pickup with a bold new attitude and genuine sense of street style.

2008 Ford Sport Trac Adrenaline2008 Ford Sport Trac Adrenaline-2“The new Sport Trac Adrenalin is designed to appeal to the urban adventurer,” said Ryan Mitton, Sport Trac marketing manager. “It still offers up the functionality and capability that Sport Trac is known for, while boosting the style factor.”

Adrenalin retains the Sport Trac’s distinctive profile, blending SUV and pickup, but the similarities end there. Every exterior panel from the beltline down has been redesigned or styled to deliver the Explorer Sport Trac Adrenalin’s cool, aftermarket look. New front and rear fascias sit 3.5-inches lower than the units on the standard truck. Full running boards are seamlessly integrated into the body design and function to visually tie the front and rear of the truck together. The rubber step pads provide traction and add a striking graphic stripe that accents the lower portion of the truck.

“The new body panels give the Sport Trac the appearance of being lower – without actually lowering the vehicle,” said Betancourt. “You get a street cruiser look without compromising any of the functionality or capability.” Adrenalin looks hot, bathed in special Colorado Red paint. Colorado Red, a true red without metal flake, is new to the Sport Trac lineup and will be launched with the Adrenalin. Additional color choices are White Suede, Black and Silver Birch Metallic.

The 10-spoke, 20-inch wheels are the same units found on the Sport Trac Adrenalin concept. The polished aluminum wheels are shod with P255/50R20 Pirelli rubber.Adrenalin will be in dealer showrooms in early January. 2007 SEMA Show: Hummer H3 Is Crossed With Corvette Z06

LAS VEGAS — The Hummer H3R Off-Road Concept unites the H3 SUV and the 7.0-liter V8 from a Chevrolet Corvette Z06, with some intriguing results, at the 2007 SEMA Show. But don't get too excited. Hummer hustles to say, "No, a production H3 equipped with an LS7 engine isn't in the cards."

Hummer H3-1Hummer H3"The H3R pays homage to the racing SUV while pushing the envelope on what could be considered 'stock' — supposing the factory decided to drop in the 505-horsepower 7.0-liter V8 from the Corvette Z06," Hummer said in reference to Team Hummer, led by Rod Hall.

One smart bit of detail here includes a forward-tilting hood with a Lexan see-through insert, as well as power-operated hood hinges. The H3R has a racing-inspired paint job with custom badging, 20-inch wheels and Mickey Thompson Bear Claw 35-inch off-road tires.

A washable rubber floor replaces the carpeting, and there's a navigation radio system and auxiliary performance gauges.

What this means to you: Unlike some of GM's other SEMA show offerings, this one won't see the light of day outside of the concept.

2008 Maserati GranTurismo Review

What We Know
The 2008 Maserati GranTurismo, a two-door coupe to complement the Quattroporte sedan, is yet another Italian beauty, this one penned by Pininfarina's Jason Castriota.

2008 Maserati GranTurismo2008 Maserati GranTurismo-2Successor to Maserati's Guigiaro-designed coupe and spyder, the upcoming GT is built on a shortened version of the Quattroporte's chassis. The GranTurismo is powered by a 405-horsepower version of the same Ferrari-sourced 4.2-liter V8 found across the Maserati range. In a nod toward the crucially important American market, where Maserati hopes to achieve significant sales gains with the GT, power is sent to the rear wheels through the ZF-built six-speed automatic transmission that just became available in the Quattroporte. With a platform converted from the rear-transaxle configuration necessary for the automated manual gearbox to the front-mounted automatic transmission, the GranTurismo should provide enough rear-seat space to make it something more than a cramped 2+2. Nevertheless, we expect a weight distribution of 49 percent front/51 percent rear, which should ensure excellent maneuverability. Meanwhile the GranTurismo's suspension will be similar in configuration to the Quattroporte's double-wishbone setup, but it'll be supplemented by Maserati's Skyhook active damping system. Throughout the rest of the car, extensive use of carbon composites and aluminum should provide the GT with an exhilarating power-to-weight ratio. Maserati hopes the GT will help alter the misperception that its cars are prohibitively expensive. Prices should begin somewhere around $110,000, putting the GT Coupe in good position to steal business from Porsche's 911 and the Mercedes-Benz SL. A hardtop convertible version of the GT, powered by a larger-bore version of the 4.2 and delivering around 470 hp, should arrive later in the year, and a Competizione model is sure to follow.
What Edmunds.com says
A gorgeous coupe with a Ferrari engine and a reasonable price. What more do you need?

2008 Chrysler 300 Review

What's New for 2008
Significant changes are in store for the 2008 Chrysler 300. An updated interior includes new soft-touch surfaces, revised instrument panel and console designs, and available LED accent lighting. New luxury-oriented options include adaptive cruise control, a surround-sound audio system, a dedicated iPod interface, Sirius Backseat TV for the rear entertainment system and a new hard-drive based MyGIG multimedia system with optional navigation.

2008 Chrysler 3002008 Chrysler 300-2Safety has been enhanced with new front seat-mounted side airbags added to the 300's available side curtain airbag system. Wrapping everything up is freshened front and rear exterior styling and Chrysler's new limited lifetime powertrain warranty.

Introduction
Mold-breaking cars don't come along very often. But that's exactly what happened when the Chrysler 300 debuted four years ago. Previous to the 300, modern full-size cars provided plenty of interior room and comfort but typically generated all the pizzazz and excitement of an ice cream social in a Florida retirement community. With the 300, Chrysler proved that this type of car could actually be fun and desirable. Shoppers loved its artful, edgy styling, rear-drive layout and powerful V8 engine options, and it was an immediate hit.

Powertrains and Performance
The base rear-wheel-drive 300 LX comes with a 2.7-liter V6 good for 178 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque. Touring and Limited models upgrade to a 3.5-liter V6 capable of 250 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. These two models are available with your choice of either rear- or all-wheel drive, as is the more muscular 300C with its 5.7-liter Hemi V8 that generates 340 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque.

2008 Jaguar S-Type Review

What's New for 2008
Jaguar's midlevel sedan enters its final year with several tweaks, all of them cosmetic. V6 and V8 models upgrade to standard 18-inch wheels and adapt the front bumper design of the S-Type R. The R, in turn, upgrades to 19-inch wheels.

2008 Jaguar S-Type2008 Jaguar S-Type-2Introduction
The Jaguar S-Type has a fairly significant place in automotive history, signifying the first real fruit of the Ford-Jaguar partnership and the first step from either brand into the midsize luxury segment. The 2008 Jaguar S-Type represents the ninth and final year of production for this midsize, rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan.

Born as the classier-looking sibling of the Lincoln LS, the S-Type also enjoyed a higher-grade interior and more potent versions of both the V6 and V8 engines.Regardless of the prodigious power at the top of the lineup, the S-Type as a whole has become known more for walking the middle ground between performance and comfort. Its V6 delivers weak performance for this class, and even decked out in R guise, handling is on the soft side. This midsize luxury sedan is also known for an interior that's a mix of virtues and vices: high comfort in front but skimpy space in back, and old-world British ambience with unfortunate splashes of Ford-grade controls and materials.

Powertrains and Performance
The base Jaguar S-Type 3.0 uses a Jaguar-enriched version of Ford's Duratec 3.0-liter V6. Its 235-horsepower rating is the most this engine has ever made, though keep in mind that it has less torque (216 pound-feet) than the competition's bigger V6s. The engine in the S-Type V8 displaces 4.2 liters and cranks out 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, while the supercharger and variable valve timing on the R boosts that all the way up to 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. If those numbers still sound petty compared to the BMW M5's 500 hp and the Mercedes E63's 507, so should its $65K price compared to their $82K and $87K. Ever since the V6 lost its short-lived stick shift of 2003-'04, a six-speed automatic transmission has transmitted power to the rear wheels on all models.

2008 Mercury Mariner Review

What's New for 2008
The 2008 Mercury Mariner gets a makeover inside and out. A more aggressive attitude marks the exterior design, and the cabin is more attractive and functional. The chassis and powertrain are virtually unchanged, however, meaning this "redesigned" Mariner has the same running gear as before.

2008 Mercury Mariner2008 Mercury Mariner-2Introduction
Something of an anomaly in the marketplace, the compact but upscale Mercury Mariner SUV gets a not-so extreme makeover for 2008. The Mariner debuted three years ago as a more luxurious version of Ford's Escape. And like its relative, the Mariner's "top-half" revamping for this year means new sheet metal and a revised interior but no significant revisions to the chassis or running gear.

The changes in the looks department include a bolder grille, taller beltline and higher hood, all of which give this junior sport-ute a more aggressive curbside presence. Inside, the changes are more functional, including such touches as a multifunction display at the top center of the dash and cool blue instrument lighting. To promote a quieter cabin, the new Mariner features an acoustic laminate within the windshield, a redesigned roof panel and thicker carpeting.

Unfortunately, these changes might not be enough to keep the 2008 Mercury Mariner competitive in the small-SUV class. In past years, we praised the Mariner for its relatively roomy (for four) cabin, sporty driving dynamics and peppy performance, but new and more modern competitors now surpass it in many areas.

A more serious disappointment concerns the Mariner's braking. For some reason, all 2008 Mariners except the V6 AWD version have reverted to rear drum brakes (they formerly had discs all around) and braking performance suffers. In our testing of a similar Escape with rear drums, the best stop from 60 mph took 154 feet — about 25 feet longer than average.

Powertrains and Performance
All versions of the Mercury Mariner can be had with either front- or all-wheel drive. A 2.3-liter inline-4 rated for 153 hp and 152 pound-feet of torque powers the base Mariner. The base V6 and Premier models come with a 3.0-liter V6 good for 200 hp and 193 lb-ft of torque. Both engines come with a four-speed automatic transmission. Properly equipped, the V6 Mariner can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

2008 Toyota Camry Solara Review

What's New for 2008
The 2008 Toyota Camry Solara coupe and convertible are unchanged.

2008 Toyota Camry Solara2008 Toyota Camry Solara-2Introduction
Usually, the two-door variants within a model line are flashier and sportier than their four-door counterparts. This was true of the Toyota Camry Solara coupe and convertible right after they were redesigned back in 2004. Since then, though, they've been upstaged by the Camry sedan, which grew more powerful in last year's overhaul. The injustice continues into 2008, as the Solara siblings stand pat while winds of change swirl around them. Rival import-brand manufacturers have launched better-performing, edgier-looking coupes, and relatively affordable hardtop convertibles are crowding into soft-top Solara price territory.

The Solara's diminishing appeal is due at least in part to its exterior styling, which although curvy and sophisticated, has never come across as trendy or youthful. This is particularly true when you look at the car from the back, as the rear deck appears to droop on both the coupe and the convertible. Another issue is the car's lack of verve once you're behind the wheel. The Solara coupe is fairly quick when equipped with the V6, but in the heavier convertible the engine's modest low-end torque and the transmission's slow responses noticeably detract from performance. And although handling is stable and predictable, the Camry Solara is not the sort of car you'll revel in driving briskly, given its soft suspension and minimal steering feedback.

Powertrains and Performance
The standard engine for the Toyota Camry Solara coupe is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder rated at 157 horsepower and 158 pound-feet of torque. It can be paired with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission, either of which drives the front wheels. Optional on Solara coupes and standard on convertibles is a 3.3-liter V6 rated for 210 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed automatic is standard with the V6. The EPA rates four-cylinder coupes at 21-22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Upgrade to the V6 and you're looking at an 18/27 rating in the coupe and 18/26 in the convertible.

A little bit of Fisker

Fisker, consider us teased. This is the first image of the upcoming plug-in hybrid luxury car from Henrik Fisker, the man behind the BMW Z8, Aston V8 and the delicious Artega GT.

Fisker hybrid luxury carApologies for the grainy little photo, but that's all we've got to go on at the moment, along with a few scant details. The hybrid is expected to cost around £50,000 and is due to debut in Detroit early next year.

It'll be limited to a production run of just 100 cars, but we've got no idea how efficient it'll be or even what engine lurks under that long bonnet.

It should look good, though - scrutiny of the image reveals hints of Aston, Maserati and maybe even a bit of Ferrari about the elongated front-engined grand tourer.

"We want people to drive beautiful fast cars that make environmental sense," says Henrik Fisker. "Cars that are eco-chic and will have less of an impact on global warming."

Noble aims indeed. We'll find out more about the Fisker hybrid early next year.

2008 Porsche 911 GT2

(from Porsche Press Release) Presenting the new 911 GT2 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is proudly launching the most powerful 911 so far homologated for road use.

2008 Porsche 911 GT22008 Porsche 911 GT2-22008 Porsche 911 GT2-3Through its striking design with large air intakes at the front and the rear wing so characteristic of this very special model, the new 911 GT2 expresses the power and performance potential of the fastest-ever 911 right from the start even at a standstill. Available exclusively with rear-wheel drive and a manual six-speed gearbox, this high-performance athlete accelerates to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 329 km/h (204 mph) on average fuel consumption of just 12.5 litres/100 km (equal to 22.6 mpg imp) in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), thus offering a level of fuel economy regarded as quite impossible in this performance class just a few years ago.

The power unit of the new 911 GT2 is based on the six-cylinder boxer engine of the 911 Turbo, with air supply by two exhaust gas turbochargers featuring variable turbine geometry (VTG). The 3.6-litre boxer engine achieves its maximum output of 530 bhp (390 kW) at 6500 rpm, with maximum torque of 680 Newton-metres maintained consistently between 2,200 and 4,500 rpm. With its unladen weight of 1,440 kg or 3,175 lb, finally, the 911 GT2 offers a power-to-weight ratio of just 2.72 kg/6.00 lb per horsepower.

The increase in engine power by 50 bhp over the ”regular“ power unit is provided in the new 911 GT2 by two turbochargers with a larger compressor wheel and a flow-optimised turbine housing raising turbocharger pressure to an even higher level. And for the first time Porsche’s engineers have combined the turbocharged engine with an expansion-type intake manifold – a genuine revolution on turbocharged power units.

The new 911 GT2 will be at the dealership in November 2007. The base price of the car in Germany is Euro 159,100.-, the market price including 19 per cent value-added tax Euro 189,496

Full Test: 2008 Infiniti EX35. This Crossover Thinks It's a Sport Coupe

We're hammering the 2008 Infiniti EX35 on Mulholland Highway in the mountains of darkest Malibu where the movie people live and we've just passed the Rock Store where bikers profile on weekends. Ahead lies the snakiest mile of the whole road.

2008 Infiniti EX352008 Infiniti EX35-22008 Infiniti EX35-3So we drive even faster. The hard-edged 297-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 spins a little quicker while the front suspension occasionally chatters a little in the hairpins, and a short time later we get to the top in the kind of a rush that makes a whole day of driving worthwhile.

Then we look over our shoulder and realize that there's a whole backseat behind us, plus the big cargo compartment and we realize again that we've just done the whole Mulholland drive in some kind of crossover-utility thingy.

It's a little unseemly. Who knows what the locals thought? Probably figured we were some kind of Malibu catering service running a party platter to some screenwriters. But of course the 2008 Infiniti EX35 really isn't any kind of crossover at all.

But once you're standing next to the Infiniti EX35, you realize it's not a crossover or even some kind of utility thingy. It's really just a tall wagon, more like a Volvo XC70 than a BMW X3. This explains everything about the EX35's combination of practical luxury and the kind of driving dynamics you'd expect for express delivery of a party platter in the mountains above Malibu.

What's the Difference? It's Fast
The 2008 Infiniti EX35 doesn't really fit our idea of a crossover. It goes down the highway like a luxury sedan, but the tiny tremble from the wide tires tells you there's a high-performance sedan lurking beneath. It steers crisply through the corners. In short, it's one of the most satisfying examples of a vehicle with "utility" in its job description that you'll find anywhere.

2008 Lotus Supercharged Elise SC

(from Lotus Press Release) Lotus is a global high tech company and expanding fast. We are committed to driving forward with technology for both Lotus Cars and our Engineering Clients, spearheading research into ever-increasing fields, such as, hybrids, electric vehicles and renewable fuels.

2008 Lotus Supercharged Elise SC2008 Lotus Supercharged Elise SC-2Lotus Cars now retails its products in 32 countries and is growing quickly in new territories such as Malaysia, Korea and China in South East Asia and the Gulf States in the Middle East. Lotus Engineering continues to provide and develop high technology engineering consultancy for the worlds motor industry.

Lotus powers into the 2008 Model year with the most powerful series production version of the
Elise to date the Supercharged Elise SC and a 240 PS Performance Pack option for the
Supercharged Exige S that further reinforces its credentials as a race car for the road.
But extra performance is only a part of the 2008 Model Year story. There are several other
enhancements that make the Elise and Exige ranges more sophisticated and better value than
ever before. Driver and passenger airbags are now standard on all models.

An advanced new instrument pack (again common to all models) provides extra information
about vehicle systems, including servicing reminders, but thanks to secret until lit technology,
drivers wont be alerted to such details until it is necessary. A completely new alarm/immobiliser
system has allowed the introduction of a new Lotus designed key with integrated fob, the
famous Lotus roundel operating as one of its three functional buttons.

The biggest news from the 2008 Model Year Lotus line-up is the introduction of the
Supercharged Elise SC, a 220 PS version of the multi award-winning roadster, easily identified
by its new rear spoiler and unique new design of alloy road wheels.

Despite the on-paper similarity with the Exige S, this is no mere engine swap this is an allnew,
non-intercooled installation applied to the current Elises 1.8-litre 2-ZZ VVTL-i engine.
The Lotus-designed, Magnuson-produced supercharger uses a smaller Eaton rotor pack (an
M45 unit) than that of the current Exige S, and is married to the intake manifold plenum as part
of a single-piece casting. Combined with the absence of an intercooler and its associated
pipework, this integrated supercharger/intake assembly contributes to an 8kg reduction in
engine weight compared with the Exige S.

Now that's what I call an M1: BMW 135i Coupe.

There's been much talk of the BMW 135i Coupe being 'the new M1'. As Piers Ward explained in his first drive of the most powerful booted 1, that's not quite the case... but this Tokyo concept brings the possibility of a properly hardcore 1-Series a lot closer.

BMW 135i CoupeBMW 135i Coupe-2BMW 135i Coupe-3Labelled the 1-Series tii - in homage to BMW's 1960s racer of the same designation - it's a stripped-out, lightweight 1 Coupe which, says BMW, gives an insight into what an out-and-out motorsport-focused 1 might look like.

And it looks good. With yards of exposed carbon fibre across the bonnet, wing mirrors and front air intakes, and a Fiesta ST-like blue-on-white colour scheme, the tii brings a bunch more purposefulness to the 1's slightly saggy looks.

That's aided by remodelled side sills and a new front bumper arrangement, as well as a neat-looking pair of 18-inch five-spoke alloys. The inside, predictably, is swathed in Alcantara.

All good, but - what with this being a concept and all - there's no word from BMW on what would power the tii.

We reckon the three-litre twin-turbo from the 135i Coupe is a pretty good place to start - a couple of gentle tweaks and that could be pushing 350bhp.

Add in a limited slip diff and you've got a proper little M1. Now to convince 'em to build it...

Tokyo show: VW grows up

Japan may be the land of the miniature solution, but VW's up! Concept has grown for its visit to Tokyo.

VolkswagenVolkswagen-2Volkswagen-3This is the space up, minivan version of Volkswagen's baby city car we saw back in Frankfurt. Unveiled at the Tokyo show, it sits on a longer wheelbase than its three-door sister, and has grown in length by 23cm and height by 40cm.

However, the space up! (anyone else hating that name already?) is still 15cm shorter than the VW Fox - seriously dinky for a four-seater.

The clean lines (or contrived retroism, depending on your point of view) of the styling remain similar to the original up!, and the engine is still strung out at the rear. VW is still touting the flexibility of the concept, and reckons it could be powered by a petrol, diesel or electric motor.

Insiders reckon we could see two- and three-cylinder engines powering the production up!, depending on the market: expect China and India to get the most frugal, low-cost versions, while Europe could see higher-powered variants.

VW has promised yet another up! concept at the Detroit show early next year. We're not expecting a coupe-convertible, but in this crazy world of lower-case proper nouns and unexpected exclamation marks, anything could happen.

First Drive 2009 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione.

The corner was slow, even unremarkable. A constant-radius, 2nd-gear curve that happened to be a part of Circuito de Balocco, Fiat's official test track, although it could have been any decent-size roundabout in the world.

2009 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione2009 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione-12009 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione-22009 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione-3Back From the Brink of Front-Wheel Drive
These are such simple pleasures that it seems absurd that one of the world's most evocative, emotive marques, one that built its brand on pure driving pleasure, has been denying them to its devotees this last decade and a half. Since 1992, a rear-wheel-drive Alfa Romeo has not been available, as a succession of front- and all-wheel-drive platforms was supplied to Alfa Romeo from its Fiat parent.

The car responsible is the 2009 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. It's been a long time coming. First shown in concept form at the 2003 Frankfurt Auto Show, the car finally is scheduled to go into production next year. You know the wait has been worth it as soon as you see how little its shape deviates from the original, how wonderfully proportioned it is and how it acknowledges Alfa's past without being defined by it.

All 500 8Cs that will be made in 2008-'09 were sold long before anyone so much as sat in one, even at a price of about $226,000. The 8C will also reintroduce Alfa Romeo to the United States. About 99 cars of the production allotment will cross the pond, and then 500 8C Spiders will be built and a batch will also come to America.
Speed Thrills
Hard driving is what this car invites more than most, even in the rarefied air of the six-figure supercar. After waiting so long for an Alfa whose direction of travel can be determined as much by your foot as your fingers, the temptation to streak off into the sunset is overwhelming. Only the concrete confines of Balocco stop us from doing so.

Initial impressions are uniformly good. The engine note is perfect. This 450-horsepower V8 has a similar capacity to a small-block Ford in the classic Mustang, but its voice is not a transatlantic rumble but instead the smooth, sweet melody of the true European aristocrat. Hit the Sport button, which sharpens the throttle response, cuts the shift times in half and opens a valve in the exhaust, and the 8C sounds at once gloriously rich, angry and assertive.

There are 354 pound-feet of torque at 4,750 rpm, so if you hit the throttle pedal hard enough, this Alfa sits back on its heels, takes a deep breath and then cannons you up the road, with its fat, rear 285/35R20 Pirellis yelping all the way. The engine develops its 450 hp all the way up at 7,000 rpm, and the 8C will fling you past 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds on its way to the far side of 180 mph. The swiftness of the gearchanges doesn't defy logic as with the Ferrari 430 Scuderia, but it's still quicker than you'd manage on your own.

First Drive: 2009 BMW 135i

To put it plainly, the 2009 BMW 135i is more than merely good. It raises the standard of measure for small coupes to a whole new level of excellence. It is one of the purest expressions of the BMW character since the 1971 BMW 2002 tii.

2009 BMW 135i2009 BMW 135i-22009 BMW 135i-3This is not another space-efficient front-wheel-drive hatchback. Instead BMW's classic configuration of front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive brings an emphasis on driving to the segment of premium small cars that includes the Volkswagen R32 and Volvo C30.

Search if you will, but you can take it from us; there is simply no more accomplished car for $30,000 than the 2009 BMW 135i.

The Numbers Tell the Story
The numbers tell the story. The 2009 BMW 135i coupe gets to 100 kph (62 mph) in just 5.3 seconds and the standing kilometer (fast becoming a standard performance benchmark among Europe's more sporting carmakers) in 24.6 seconds. To give this speed some perspective, the new 2008 BMW M3 is just 0.5 second and 1.3 seconds quicker to the same marks respectively. Even more important, this 135i coupe will rip from 50-75 mph in 4th gear in just 5.0 seconds — just 0.1 second slower than the latest M-car.

These figures are important, because there is little about the styling of the new 1 Series coupe to hint at such performance potency. Its compact dimensions, strongly creased character lines and taut surfacing can be jarring from some angles and certainly won't be to everyone's taste, but they do provide the new two-door with an alluringly muscular appearance that expresses its sporting aspirations.

Full Test: 2008 Lexus IS-F

Rather than shoehorning a 5.0-liter V8 into the nose of an IS 350 and simply calling it the IS 500, Lexus has instead cooked up a far more dedicated sport sedan with its new 2008 Lexus IS-F.According to Lexus, the "F" in Lexus IS-F is derived from Toyota's initial "Circle-F" designation of 20 years ago for what would become the Lexus brand itself. Circle-F later morphed into Flagship One or F1, which in turn became the internal code for the first Lexus car, the LS 400.

2008 Lexus IS-F2008 Lexus IS-F-12008 Lexus IS-F-2F Is for Fury
Regardless of what it means to the luxury carmaker (and how it appears to the serious sport-sedan buyer), the 2008 Lexus IS-F is a serious piece of highly engineered hardware indeed. At its heart, the 5.0-liter V8 (2UR-GSE) comes from a stroked version of the 4.6-liter engine (1UR-FSE) found in the luxo-cruising Lexus LS 460. Now that Yamaha (a frequent collaborator with Toyota for engine projects) has had its way with it, an essentially all-new engine pumps out an impressive 416 horsepower at 6,600 rpm with 371 pound-feet of torque available at 5,200 rpm.

Exclusive to this Lexus V8 are trick cylinder heads with solid lifters and titanium intake valves, plus a water-cooled oil radiator. There's also an oil-scavenge pumping system that keeps the engine supplied with life-sustaining lubricant even in high-G cornering, and even the fuel tank uses an offset pump in a sub-tank for the same reasons.

The engine's lightweight reciprocating mass (said to be half that of other UR engines) combines with variable valve timing to produce a lofty redline of 6,800 rpm.

There's an instantly recognizable pubescent change in the IS-F's voice at 3,600 rpm when the dual-path intake system opens the secondary plumbing (located in the right wheelwell), immersing the passengers in a furious symphony of eight-cylinder baritone.

When you pour the 5.0-liter V8's power through the highly modified eight-speed automatic transmission (from the LS 460), the 3,780-pound IS-F is good for a 4.8-second time to 60 mph on the way to a quarter-mile in 13.2 seconds at 109 mph, and it's still accelerating hard — very hard.

The price of the 2008 Lexus IS-F might make it persuasive. Though the official numbers won't be announced for a bit, Lexus says our estimate of $59,900 isn't "embarrassingly inaccurate," so we used the current IS 350's optional $2,550 navigation system price to calculate this IS-F's $62,540 as-tested price.

Tokyo: Honda CR-Z turns hybrids sexy

If we might for a second divert our attention from the Nissan GT-R - and the sight of grown men acting like four-year-olds when Father Christmas has brought the world's biggest Scalextric - my favourite car at the show may well have been the Honda CR-Z.

Honda CR-ZOK it's still a bit 'conceptized', what with its glass dashboard and all, but when the real one shows up at Honda dealer near you in 2010 it'll likely be the first sexy affordable hybrid.

There used to be loads of baby coupes, and the Honda's own 1990 VTEC Civic CR-X was one. Check the back end of the CR-Z, with its vertical glass panel, and you see the family resemblance.

At the front, the designers say the nostril is like on of their 60s GP cars. (Memo to Honda F1: forget that messy globe and paint your car pure white with a red circle on the side and gold wheels. It'll be worth two seconds a lap.)

Anyway, Honda hybrids aren't like a Prius. They can have manual transmissions for a start. They're fun if Honda chooses to tune them that way. And Honda knows how to make a small car handle: I give you the Civic Type-R.

Of course, with two years to production there's still plenty of time for Honda to mess it up, but right now the CR-Z is fine by me. It's sharp-looking, fun, cheap and green. What's not to like?

2008 Honda Accord Review

What's New for 2008
Honda Accord has been fully redesigned for 2008. It's bigger and roomier. New four- and six-cylinder engines are not only more powerful, they either match or surpass their predecessors in terms of fuel economy.

2008 Honda Accord 2008 Honda Accord -22008 Honda Accord -32008 Honda Accord Vehicle Overview
Introduction
Still available in sedan and coupe body styles, the all-new 2008 Honda Accord is most obviously highlighted by its slick new styling. The two-door is particularly striking, as it's mostly unchanged from the Accord concept car that debuted at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. The sedan, meanwhile, has an eye-catching elegance that sets it apart from past Accords, which were mostly understated to the point of anonymity. Although, once the first 100,000 2008 Accords hit the streets, the sedan may start to seem pretty anonymous, too.

The biggest news lies under the hood, where Honda has devoted its considerable engine expertise to perfecting three power plants that deliver both performance and fuel efficiency. Available on EX sedans and all coupes, the midlevel inline-four-cylinder produces a best-in-class 190 horsepower -- by comparison, the 1998 all-new Accord featured an optional V6 that produced 200 hp. All that power comes at no fuel economy expense, as it matches the fuel economy estimates of the previous model's four-cylinder.

A new 3.5-liter V6 debuts as well. This engine equals the hefty horsepower and torque ratings of the Toyota Camry's V6, but falls a wee bit short of the Altima 3.5. New to this segment is Honda's cylinder-deactivation technology, which allows the engine to run on six, four or three cylinders depending on driving conditions for maximum fuel economy. The result is an improvement of 3 highway mpg over the last V6, despite 24 more horses. As a matter of fact, all 2008 Accord engines get better highway fuel economy than the 125-hp 1990 Accord and even come close to the tiny 68-hp 1977 edition. Now that's progress.

2008 Lexus SC 430 Review

What's New for 2008
Now entering its seventh year, this generation of the Lexus SC 430 sees just a few detail changes for 2008. Among them are redesigned and illuminated scuff plates, a black license plate accent and new wheels for the Pebble Beach edition.

2008 Lexus SC 430 2008 Lexus SC 430 -12008 Lexus SC 430 -22008 Lexus SC 430 Vehicle Overview
Introduction
The 2008 Lexus SC 430 is something of a rarity for this luxury automaker -- a product that has run past its expiration date. When it debuted for 2002, the SC 430 charmed luxury drop-top shoppers with its retractable hardtop, pleasant personality, fastidious attention to detail and the company's ironclad reputation for quality and reliability.

Those attributes still hold true, but sadly so do the car's drawbacks. The trunk is miniscule, and with the retractable hardtop stowed, what minimal capacity there is shrinks even more. The cramped rear seats are decorative at best -- even little kids will be annoyed at the lack of legroom. And although the SC has a V8 engine, rear-wheel drive and a sport-tuned suspension, it won't appeal to driving enthusiasts due to its boulevard-cruising nature.

Powertrains and Performance
A 4.3-liter V8 engine that produces 288 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque powers the SC 430. Sending the power to the rear wheels is a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control. The SC 430 can hit 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds.

This hike in power, together with an increase in torque to 170 lbft / 230 Nm / 23.5 kgm at 5,500 rpm from the standard 158.6 lbft / 215 Nm (22 kgm) at 5500 rpm, helps whisk the Performance Pack Exige S from zero to 60mph in 4.0 secs / 0-100km/h in 4.2 secs (estimated) and from standstill to 100mph in 9.7 secs (estimated). Top speed rises to 153 mph (estimated). The power and torque of the 240 PS engine is increased across the rev range giving even more flexibility. Inspite of this phenomenal performance the fuel economy is impressive with an estimated combined figure of 9.1 litres / 100 km (31.0 mpg)

Of course the increased power and straight-line performance are only a couple of elements of
the Performance Pack option. The clutch is uprated and a clutch damper fitted; there are
thicker, 308mm diameter cross-drilled and vented discs at the front clamped by AP Racing fourpiston callipers; the standard brakes pads are replaced by uprated items and there are braided brake hoses.

As with launch control, you can control the amount of traction control you require from the
drivers seats, altering it on the move to suit the characteristics of particular corners. The
amount of traction control can be varied in over 30 increments from an optimum 7 percent tyre
slip to completely off. The message display in the new instrument pack displays what degree of
traction control you have currently dialled in.

2008 Jeep Wrangler Review

What's New for 2008
After setting a new trail with a complete redesign last year, the Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited travel into 2008 with only minor equipment changes. These include a standard Sunrider soft top on Wrangler Sahara and Rubicon models, optional remote ignition and a new Sahara appearance package for both two- and four-door versions.

2008 Jeep Wrangler 2008 Jeep Wrangler-12008 Jeep Wrangler -22008 Jeep Wrangler Vehicle Overview
Introduction
The 2008 Jeep Wrangler is not so much an SUV as an experience. It's slow and loud, handles poorly, gets bad gas mileage, has crummy interior materials and features doors that provide virtually no crash protection. Oh, and breaking into the trunk requires nothing more than undoing a zipper.

Under normal methods of evaluation, all these borderline-absurd negatives would seem to add up to a vehicle barely worthy of cab duty in Bangladesh. And yet the Wrangler is strangely attractive -- so much so that it's one of the 10-best-selling SUVs on the market. It exists for people who want something decidedly different -- particularly a macho image and serious rock-crawling capability that few SUVs still offer in this crossover age.

Powertrains and Performance
All 2008 Jeep Wranglers are powered by a 3.8-liter V6 attached to a six-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic. The engine produces 202 horsepower and 237 pound-feet of torque. Most Wranglers come with four-wheel-drive, complete with high and low gears, although the Unlimited can be had with rear-drive only. The Rubicon trim has heavy-duty axles, a Rock-trac transfer case with extra-low gearing, and electronically locking front and rear differentials. In testing, we've found that a Wrangler Unlimited takes a longish 9.7 seconds to reach 60 mph -- and that was the good time. Another Wrangler Unlimited we tested did it in a glacial 10.4 seconds.

Porsche cleared for Volkswagen takeover

Will Porsche buy out Volkswagen? A Teutonic takeover looks on the cards after Europe's highest court (most powerful, that is, not one at especially lofty altitude) ruled a law protecting VW from foreign takeovers is illegal.

PorscheThe so-called 'VW Law' had prevented Porsche from exercising more than 20 per cent of its voting rights over Volkswagen, despite owning a 31 per cent stake.

But the European Court of Justice ruled that the law - which was originally drawn up back in 1960 to prevent VW being taken over by hostile foreign investors - contravened the principles of the European Single Market.

That means that Porsche will soon be free to take its stake in VW to 50 per cent, giving it overall control. Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking said today, "We obviously have a high interest in exercising our voting rights in full." Watch out, VW.

So does this mean we'll see a VW 911 Turbo or, worse, a Porsche Polo? Unlikely, but the two companies have already collaborated on the Touareg/Cayenne project, so don't rule out the possibility of more production crossover.

In any case, insiders say that Porsche is unlikely to raise its stake in VW until next year? Пiving all you Mk II Golf owners time to remove that 'My Other Car's A Porsche' sticker from the rear window.

2008 Cadillac Escalade ESV Review

What's New for 2008
For 2008, two-wheel drive becomes available on the Cadillac Escalade ESV (late availability).

2008 Cadillac Escalade ESV2008 Cadillac Escalade ESV-2Introduction
For the first half of 2007, overall sales of full-size SUVs were down relative to the previous year's figures, but it was a different story for a subset of this group. Full-size luxury SUVs, a glamorous bunch that includes the Cadillac Escalade ESV, saw a slight sales increase. Apparently, not even high gas prices and changing consumer tastes can slow the demand for rides that are big on flash and prestige.

Power is another of this SUV's strengths. The ESV, like the regular Escalade, comes with a 403-horsepower V8. Of course, with a curb weight approaching 3 tons, the Escalade ESV is most definitely a plus-sized model, and you'll never find yourself bragging about fuel economy. Still, acceleration is vigorous, and there's enough towing capacity to make short work of most hauling tasks.

Given its deluxe price tag, you expect lots of luxury from this Caddy, and for the most part, it delivers. Its interior scores high marks for comfort. Overall materials quality is respectable and ergonomics are spot on, with user-friendly controls -- particularly the large, optional navigation touchscreen. Though the 2008 Cadillac Escalade ESV is awash with convenience features (standard amenities include a power liftgate, surround-sound audio and three-zone climate control), it's missing one very useful feature: fold-flat third-row seating.

Powertrains and Performance
The Escalade ESV is available with either two-wheel drive (late availability) or all-wheel drive. All models are powered by a 6.2-liter V8 that boasts 403 hp and 417 pound-feet of torque. The standard six-speed automatic transmission features both a tow/haul and a manual shift mode. According to revised EPA fuel estimates, the 2008 Cadillac Escalade ESV gets 12 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway -- figures that are right in step with those offered by others in its segment. This Cadillac tows up to 7,800 pounds.

2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata Review

What's New for 2008
For 2008, the Mazda MX-5 Miata sees only minor feature changes, a new Special Edition trim level and a 5-horsepower drop for automatic transmission-equipped Miatas.

2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata-1Introduction
In today's "let the gizmos handle it" world, where some cars offer not just cruise control so advanced that it can stop the car if need be, but also a warning system that alerts a driver who starts drifting out of his lane, it's easy to forget the simple joy of fully involved driving. Should you need to be reminded, we highly recommend the 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Since its debut nearly two decades ago, the Miata has won over legions of driving enthusiasts and earned accolades from auto critics and consumers alike thanks to its entertaining drive and impressive reliability record. It was fully redesigned two years ago for more comfort and performance without losing any of its elemental appeal. Last year, Mazda introduced the power-retractable hardtop (PRHT) version. The Miata PRHT offers the comfort of a coupe when its top is up as well or the full roadster experience when down. It doesn't even exact the weight penalty one may envision, as Mazda says the PRHT weighs just 70 pounds more than the ragtop.

Powertrains and Performance
All Miatas come with a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that makes 166 horsepower (158 with the automatic transmission) and 140 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission drives the rear wheels on SV and Sport trims, while a six-speed manual is fitted to the Touring and Grand Touring trims. A six-speed automatic with paddle shifters is optional on all but the SV and the Sport PRHT.

2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer Review

What's New for 2008
The 2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer carries over with minimal changes, most notably adding satellite radio and side curtain airbags to its standard equipment list.

2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer 2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer -1Introduction
The Chevrolet TrailBlazer represents what one could consider to be the old guard of midsize SUVs. In the midst of a consumer shift to carlike crossover SUVs, the TrailBlazer maintains the traditional SUV trait of truck-based architecture. While this provides advantages in terms of off-road performance and towing capacity, it limits the vehicle's appeal to those mostly interested in responsive handling and a well-packaged and versatile interior.

The TrailBlazer was last redesigned in 2002, and its age is showing. Though performance and ride quality remain strong points, the Chevy's cabin design is dated and its handling, always circumspect, doesn't inspire much confidence. And unlike most rivals with optional third-row seating, the 2008 TrailBlazer makes do with just two rows and a passenger capacity limited to five.

The 2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer could still be a fair choice for consumers wanting a vehicle for frequent towing or off-road use. Some might also find appeal in the high-performance TrailBlazer SS. But overall, we think there are plenty of better choices for a mainstream midsize SUV.

Powertrains and Performance
Chevy's TrailBlazer comes standard with a 4.2-liter inline-6 that generates 285 horsepower and 276 pound-feet of torque. A 5.3-liter V8 is optional, featuring 300 hp and 321 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are backed by a four-speed automatic transmission and a choice of rear-wheel or four-wheel drivelines.

2008 Lincoln Mark LT Review

What's New for 2008
The 2008 Lincoln Mark LT gets a few new features. An optional rearview camera eases parking, while standard satellite radio provides additional audio entertainment. Remote engine start (a dealer-installed option) is also newly available.

2008 Lincoln Mark LT Review2008 Lincoln Mark LT Review-1Introduction
Americans love pickup trucks. They also like luxury. So it makes sense that there are some people out there who want both. For them, there's the 2008 Lincoln Mark LT luxury pickup. Based on the full-size Ford F-150 pickup, the Mark LT gains a bit of differentiation via its big Lincoln waterfall grille, additional chrome trim, special taillights and flashy wheels. The Lincoln offers a lot of luxury for the money, but it doesn't take much scrutiny to realize that the LT has but one degree of separation from the F-150. Disappointingly, the LT has the same basic interior design and hard plastic interior panels, and doesn't really offer any features that you can't get on the Ford. Look at an F-150 King Ranch and you'll be looking at pretty much the same truck.

Powertrains and Performance
A 5.4-liter V8 that makes 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque is matched to a four-speed automatic transmission. Although it has a smooth power delivery, the Ford-sourced V8 makes more noise than forward progress. With only four widely spaced gears to work with, the Mark LT takes 9.6 seconds to reach 60 mph, nearly 3 seconds slower than the Escalade EXT.
Although it's not quick, the Mark LT has enough torque to handle typical towing jobs with ease. Towing capacity, at 8,900 pounds, is more than respectable.

2008 Lexus GS 460 More Costly Than Outgoing Model

TORRANCE, Calif. — Lexus has announced that its new 2008 GS 460 will start at $53,385, including a $765 destination charge. That price is $245 more than the outgoing 2007 GS 430, which the new model replaces.

2008 Lexus GS 460 The 2008 Lexus GS 460 gets a boost of 52 horsepower over the previous model. It is equipped with a 4.6-liter V8 that makes 342 hp and 339 pound-feet of torque, which is 20 lb-ft more than the outgoing model, mated to what Lexus describes as the segment's first eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine first appeared in the automaker's LS 460 flagship.

The 2008 GS 460 also gets semi-aniline leather trim in the cabin and ventilated front seats as standard items.

Toyota's upscale brand said its base 2008 Lexus GS 350 will start at $44,915, including shipping. The 2008 GS 450h hybrid starts at $55,565. Those prices are the same as the 2007 models.

2007 Tokyo Auto Show Preview: Mitsubishi Concept-ZT

TOKYO — One look at Mitsubishi's unimaginative Concept-ZT should convince any doubters that this Japanese automaker just doesn't design great sedans. Under the skin, it's a different story.

Mitsubishi Concept-ZTMitsubishi Concept-ZT-1Mitsubishi Concept-ZT-2The Concept-ZT is slightly larger than the Galant, but its bland styling hardly justifies its positioning by Mitsubishi as a "premier sedan." Of considerable interest to techies, however, is the car's aluminum space-frame construction and use of high-strength recyclable plastic for the hood, fenders, doors and deck lid. The Concept-ZT also employs "green" plastic throughout the cabin, which — fortunately — is also trimmed in wood, metal and leather.

Powering the car is a new DOHC 2.2-liter four-cylinder "clean diesel" mated to the new twin-clutch SST gearbox that is also featured in the redesigned Evo. The engine makes 188 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, and drives all four wheels through Mitsubishi's sophisticated S-AWC system. The Concept-ZT rides on alloy wheels shod with 255/35R20 tires.

What this means to you: It's not much to look at, but the tech features in the Concept-ZT could make your future car cleaner, safer and more environmentally friendly.

2007 Tokyo Auto Show Preview: Suzuki Palette

The Suzuki Palette, called a concept but looking remarkably production ready, emulates the baby Peugeot in shape and also offers power-sliding doors on both sides. In that regard, it also mimics the latest edition of the Daihatsu Tanto, which, like the Palette, will make its debut at next week's 2007 Tokyo Auto Show.

Suzuki PaletteSuzuki Palette-1Suzuki Palette-2Suzuki is aiming the four-passenger vehicle at young singles à la the Toyota bB, and at "parents who cherish time with their children." The Palette has a low, flat floor for easy loading and unloading of cargo and passengers.

What this means to you: The Palette appears to be showroom bound in Japan in the not-too-distant future.

2007 Tokyo Auto Show Preview: Subaru Exiga

TOKYO — Subaru's Exiga concept for the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show is a new seven-passenger "proposal" that appears to combine design elements from the company's midsize Legacy station wagon and Forester crossover vehicle — and it looks virtually showroom-ready.

Subaru ExigaSubaru Exiga-1Subaru Exiga-2The Exiga shares a number of mechanical elements with its siblings, too, including a turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-4 engine, five-speed automatic transmission and Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive.

The vehicle also boasts a supersize panoramic glass roof and theater-style seating, with rear passengers sitting a little higher than those in front. Seats are upholstered in leather and trimmed in pearl white and blue. The rear seatbacks incorporate fold-down tray tables, similar to those on airplanes.

What this means to you: This people-friendly family hauler looks much more attractive than anything Subaru has on the road today.

2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor Review

Summary
Though it's a well-rounded package, the 2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor is increasingly lost amidst a growing crowd of very good SUVs.
Pros
Carlike ride and handling, spacious seating front and back, solid build quality, torquey V6 engine, long warranty coverage.
Cons
No available third-row seat, less cargo capacity than competitors, missing a few common features, some mediocre interior materials.

2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor-2What's New for 2008
Traction control is now standard on all Endeavors, while two-tone leather upholstery is now standard on the SE trim level, along with contrasting stitching. The rear glass no longer opens independently of the hatch on the LS trim level.

2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor Vehicle Overview
Introduction
There's more to the 2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor than huge fender flares and exaggerated body bulges. That's saying quite a lot, since this midsize five-passenger crossover SUV is festooned with the type of body adornment that makes you wonder if the folks at the factory accidentally included the prototype's styling excesses on the production model. Yet between the Endeavor's love-it-or-hate-it swollen sides is a vehicle that offers solid driving dynamics, a gutsy V6, a roomy cabin and good build quality.

The 2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor is a dark-horse candidate to be sure, overshadowed by newer and/or better-known five-passenger crossovers like the Ford Edge, Mazda CX-7, Hyundai Santa Fe or even Mitsubishi's own Outlander, which offers almost as much interior space and more high-tech goodies. Also, larger crossovers like the Ford Taurus X and GMC Acadia have room for seven, while besting the Endeavor's meager fuel economy. If its ambitious styling floats your boat, though, and you can live without two extra seats, the 2008 Endeavor is a good choice that provides safe, comfortable and well-built family transportation.

First Drive: 2008 Aston Martin DBS.Be James Bond at 191 mph

Low, sleek and yet self-consciously aggressive, the 2008 Aston Martin DBS is the ultimate expression of the contemporary Aston Martin.

The 2008 Aston Martin DBS is the car that Aston CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez describes as "thunder and lightning." Aston Martin must achieve the prestige of Ferrari to survive as an influential manufacturer of sports cars, and that means the DBS must measure up against the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano.

2008 Aston Martin DBSA Surprising Start

For the DBS, Aston Martin presents you with a plastic controller topped with a crystal, described as an ECU — Emotion Control Unit. (Well, it'll be stainless steel and a sapphire if you actually pay the $265,000.) It slots into the center of the starter button, which then glows warmly red as the 5,935cc V12 comes to life.

This is the same Ford-designed engine featured in the DB9, still assembled by hand in Cologne, Germany. It's been slightly revised for the DBS, and the changes include a taller 10.9:1 compression ratio and a bypass valve in the intake tract that opens at 5,500 rpm to admit more air into the engine at peak rpm. The upshot of this is a 60-horsepower hike in power from the DB9's 450-hp calibration to 510 hp at 6,500 rpm. The torque output remains unchanged at 420 pound-feet, available at 5,750 rpm.

The deep, rich tone from the V12 engine is instantly familiar, now a signature of Aston Martin. Reach out for the shift lever of the six-speed manual transmission (an automated sequential manual will be available later), and slot into 1st gear. The shift action is heavy, as you would expect from a rear-mounted transaxle required to process so much power, yet it's precise and manageable, while the clutch action is light and linear. The DBS might be powerful, but it's not intimidating.

Audi's clean little secret: Audi A1

The European invasion of Japan has begun. This is the Audi A1 concept, set to be revealed at the Tokyo Auto Show and take the premium small car fight to the Mini Cooper.

Audi A1 Audi A1-1 Audi A1-1Actually, Audi isn't calling it the A1 concept, but rather the Metroproject Quattro. It's a three-door, four-seater plug-in hybrid that could reach production some time in 2009 to slot below the A3 in Audi's line-up.

The A1 concept (we're going to stick with that name - Metroproject Quattro sounds like a cheesy Amsterdam rave bar) is powered by a 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine, which sends 150bhp through the front wheels. There's also a 41bhp electric motor positioned over the rear axle - which, in a rather cool touch, is visible through the rear hatch - driving the rear wheels.

This means that, when the two motors are working simultaneously, the A1 becomes four-wheel drive, but under low loads it can run on either motor independently: the lithium-ion batteries give the A1 a range of some 60 miles in pure electric mode.

Audi quotes emissions of 112g/km of CO for the A1 concept, while fuel economy stands at 58mpg: not bad for a car that'll hit 62mph in under eight seconds.

Predictably, the A1 concept is more restrained in appearance than the Mini Cooper it'll be aiming to steal buyers away from. That said, there are still some neat touches: those wrap-over aluminium arches give an almost Fiat 500-esque curve to the coupe's glasshouse, while the front end is dominated by that huge, trapezoidal front grille.

The cabin is functional, without many of the retro touches of other premium small cars. The A1's big trick is the iPhone-inspired Audi Mobile Device, a handheld unit that plugs into a slot on the centre console.

We'll get a closer look at the A1 concept in Tokyo next week, where we'll be dreaming of an RS1. No idea how it'd work, but we want one.

2008 BMW 5 Series

(from BMW Press Release) Building on last year’s updates, BMW’s 2008 5 Series Sedans and Sport Wagon receive another significant freshening and, in the case of 6-cylinder models, a major boost in power and efficiency. Complementing the power increase, a thoroughly revised interior, new technological features and a freshened look front and rear ensure this benchmark collection of rear and all-wheel-drive Sedans and Sports Wagon will maintain their place at the forefront of the mid-size luxury class.

These early March 2007 release of the 2008 5 Series models represent the most significant update since their introduction in late 2003 as 2004s. Adopting the new engines introduced in the 3 Series Coupe, the 6-cylinder Sedans and Sport Wagon receive new model designations, reflecting a marked boost in power.

New technological features also make their appearance for ’08. First among these is BMW’s Lane Departure Warning system, a camera-based system that monitors lane placement, and discreetly notifies the driver via mild steering wheel vibration of any motions that might indicate an inadvertent lane change. The convenience of Active Cruise Control is extended via a new Stop and Go feature, which enables the system to function even in heavy traffic. Active Cruise allows the vehicle to come to a complete stop without losing its setting, then accelerate back up to set speed with only a touch of the accelerator pedal from the driver..

With all these changes for 2008, BMW’s 5 Series again reasserts itself as the class leader in the midsize performance-luxury field.

2007 Tokyo Auto Show Preview: Subaru Impreza BEAMS Edition

TOKYO — Subaru has been moderately successful in North America in teaming with outfitter L.L. Bean on outdoorsy versions of several models. Now, Japanese domestic buyers have their own special vehicle: the Impreza BEAMS Edition.

Subaru Impreza BEAMS EditionSubaru Impreza BEAMS Edition-1Subaru Impreza BEAMS Edition-2Subaru has teamed with BEAMS, a Japanese purveyor of hip fashions with the advertising slogan of "Art for Everyday." Curiously, the BEAMS Web site promotes clothing with "Clean American Casual Style."

There isn't much more to the Impreza BEAMS than paint and trim. The car is painted orange — the BEAMS signature color — and the black leather seats are top-stitched in orange.

Without elaboration, Subaru says in its Tokyo show teaser that "we aimed to create a car that puts a smile on your face." We have to admit, the orange-and-black theme just before Halloween works for us.

What this means to you: Consider the BEAMS edition as the Japanese equivalent of our L.L. Bean models.

2008 Audi R8

LONDON — Audi is launching a head-snapping advertising campaign for its 2008 R8 in the United Kingdom today that uses the tagline "the slowest car we've ever built."

2008 Audi R8 2008 Audi R8 -2The $12.2 million ad campaign makes heavy use of irony, since the R8 is the fastest production car Audi has ever produced. It is equipped with a 420-horsepower V8 4.2-liter FSI engine and sprints from zero to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. It has a top speed of 187 mph. "But because each one is constructed with painstaking precision, largely by hand, it actually has by far the slowest build process of all Audi models," the automaker notes in a statement. Only 450 R8s will be shipped to the U.K. in 2007, with 750 to follow in 2008.

The 90-second commercial by Bartle Bogle Hegarty promises to be fairly riveting, with a group of real Audi mechanics putting together an R8 over the course of several days "from the very first bolt to the finished car."

Irony is defined as something that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects. If you Google "Germans and irony," you get a sense of the controversy behind the linking of the two. "Do Germans Do Irony?" asks one citation, while castigating the celibate German-born Pope Benedict XVI for criticizing Europeans for having fewer children than in the past.

When the 2008 Audi R8 launches in the U.S. this fall, it will start at $109,000. No word yet on whether we'll see the ironic ad campaign in these parts.

What this means to you: Hey, it got your attention, and that's what the best ads do.

Citoen C5

In many decades' time, historians may look back on 2007 as the Year of the Big Family Car.

We've already seen the stellar Ford Mondeo and the, erm, conservative Renault Laguna, as well as Mazda's new 6, and now Citroen has released the first official pictures of its all-new C5.

Citoen C5Citoen C5-2Citoen C5-3The C5 is a big car for Citroen, and it's a big car: larger than its predecessor in every direction. The saloon - there's no hatch version to be offered - is 16cm longer, 9cm taller and a couple of centimetres wider, while the estate is even bigger.

And they both look good. The sleek lines of the C5 owe much to its big brother C6, and it looks like the executive levels of comfort are to be carried over, too.

That means the C5 gets a whole bunch of clever kit, most excitingly an optional massaging drivers seat. Whether it'll come with a 'full finish' function is as yet unclear.

The C5 also debuts the second generation of Citroen's fixed-centre steering wheel, meaning that vital controls will stay where they are no matter how much you spin the wheel.

Cruise control and a speed limiter are also fitted as standard, while top-spec C5s will get, well, just about everything.

Two suspensions set-ups are available: a conventional coil-spring arrangement with double wishbones at the front and multilinks at the rear, or a Citroen trademark hydropneumatic set-up. The Hydractive self-levelling suspension has three modes, ranging from 'Soft' to 'Sport'.

There are plenty of engine options: 1.8- and 2.0-litre petrol engines and no less than four diesels, the most powerful of which is a V6 that develops 208bhp.

The new C5 will go on sale in the UK early next year. The Year of the Big Family Car looks set to run and run...

TORRANCE, Calif. — The 2008 Honda Odyssey minivan went on sale Wednesday starting at $26,495, including a $635 destination charge. The price reflects a $215 increase over the base 2007 Honda Odyssey LX, which started at $26,280, including shipping.

Among the new features are standard memory-linked side mirrors with reverse-gear tilt-down on the Touring model and a standard rearview camera display built into the rearview mirror on the Odyssey EX-L.

2007 Nissan Round Box Concept

(from Nissan Press Release) Youth-Oriented Compact Convertible Provides Occupants Senses of Speed and exilleration

2007 Nissan Round Box Concept2007 Nissan Round Box Concept-12007 Nissan Round Box Concept-2The Nissan Round Box, with its compact convertible design, represents a new take on open-air motoring, providing exhilaration for all passengers - not just the driver - through its uniquely shared experience of fresh air stimulation, a sensation of speed and easy-to-use high-spec features.

The Round Box features an environmentally friendly turbocharged direct injection gasoline engine mated to Nissan's advanced Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). It is also equipped with a number of safety systems based on Nissan's Safety Shield* concept, including Around View Monitor and Distance Control Assist System (DCAS).

The inspiration for Round Box's interior, which features the "right sized" space to facilitate communication between the four occupants, was not another vehicle, but a social environment. "The car was inspired by the lively atmosphere of a sports bar," explains Tatsuya Shiosaki of Nissan's Exploratory and Advanced Product Department. "In a sports bar everyone is focused on the game for pure enjoyment. They are totally free of the pressure and tension felt by the players who are actually playing the game on the field. A sports bar affords an enjoyable, stress-free space where friends can experience a sense of togetherness. Simultaneously, they can enjoy thrilling excitement like being on a roller-coaster yet without any risk involved. That is the sort of emotive world the Round Box is intended to provide."

2007 Tokyo Auto Show Preview: Suzuki Kizashi 2

TOKYO — Suzuki next week will pull the wraps off the Kizashi 2, a follow-up to the similarly named Frankfurt concept.

Suzuki Kizashi 2 Suzuki Kizashi 2 -1Suzuki Kizashi 2 -2Described as a "crossover sports wagon," the midsize Kizashi 2 rides on 22-inch wheels and tires. It is powered by a DOHC 3.6-liter V6 mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. The current production version of that engine, which is used in the XL7 utility vehicle, delivers 252 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. Suzuki says the Kizashi 2 is also designed to accommodate a hybrid powertrain.

The automaker has released few other details on the vehicle, but the Kizashi concept is widely seen in Japan as the precursor of a new midsize vehicle family that eventually will replace the Daewoo-derived Verona.

What this means to you: Look for the future production version of the Kizashi to make its way across the Pacific, possibly in 2009.

Details on '08 Cadillac CTS, Including Tutorial on French Stitching

DETROIT — More details have been released about the 2008 Cadillac CTS, including the reason why the entry-level luxury car is minus an electric parking brake at launch time. The details were outlined on Wednesday in a posting on the GM FastLane blog by Eric Clough, Cadillac interiors director of design.

Cadillac CTSCadillac CTS-1Cadillac CTS-2"Not having a handbrake in the center console was a conscious decision to enable dual cupholders and air ducting to reach the rear passenger outlets," Clough explained in a follow-up to an earlier posting about the cabin of the CTS. "An electric park brake will be in the car starting in model-year 2009, located just behind the shifter. It was unfortunately not fully developed in time for this launch, but along with the obvious interior space-saving benefit, will also be lighter than the mechanical system it replaces."

Clough also noted that the CTS's radio is usable with the navigation screen retracted. "In fact, the only time the full screen is necessary is for nav use," he pointed out.

Apparently, consumers (male) are clueless when it comes to the benefits of French stitching. Clough patiently explained that "French stitching is a type of seam that has a line of stitching on both sides of the seam. The excess material from each piece being joined is folded back under and secured by the lines of stitching. This keeps the seam flat and greatly improves the quality of the surface because the excess can't wobble back and forth underneath."

Breaking News: Undisguised 2009 Nissan GT-R

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — The wait is over. Undisguised 2009 Nissan GT-R photos have now become available prior to the car's official debut at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show.

Numerous GT-R prototypes have been caught testing around the world, including at Germany's Nürburgring and California's Laguna Seca Raceway, but this is the first look at the rocket coupe's completely undisguised sheet metal.

Undisguised 2009 Nissan GT-RUndisguised 2009 Nissan GT-R-1Undisguised 2009 Nissan GT-R-2Undisguised 2009 Nissan GT-R-3Most of the specifications aren't expected to be announced until Nissan's Tokyo show press conference on October 24, but today we know that the all-wheel-drive 2009 GT-R will get a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 that produces 473 horsepower and 434 pound-feet of torque. It'll drive all four wheels through a rear-mounted transaxle. The only transmission will be a GR6 dual-clutch six-speed automatic. And of course there will be paddle shifters for your enjoyment — the same leather-wrapped aluminum paddle shifters as Nissan uses in the G35 sedan.

Nissan says the GT-R will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, finish the quarter-mile in 11.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 192 mph. Base price is expected to be less than $80,000.

If true, the GT-R will be serious competition for the Porsche 911 Turbo, which it has been routinely seen testing alongside.

X-change operation: Jaguar X-Type

Furiously flogging every last inch from its entry-level horse, Jaguar has revealed a revised X-Type - due to go on sale in the UK next year.

Jaguar X-TypeJaguar X-Type-1Jaguar X-Type-2The most obvious alteration is the X-Type's nose: that mesh grille is straight off the new XJ, while there's a fresh front bumper, too.

But Jaguar insists that this isn't just a facelift, because some 500 components have been altered.

Significantly, the 2.2-litre diesel now comes with the option of Jag's six-speed automatic 'box: diesel buyers previously had to make do with the manual, but the new combination means you'll get fuel economy of 41mpg with CO2 emission of around 184g/km.

Prices will remain similar across the range.

You'll see the revised X-Type on the forecourts in March next year, almost exactly the same time as the new XF will go on sale.

Snake on the plains: FPV (Ford Performance Vehicles) Cobra

When we saw the Holden VE Ute back at the end of August, we thought we'd found extreme ute heaven. But there might be two mad performance pickups on that cloud.

This is the FPV (Ford Performance Vehicles) Cobra, unveiled at the Australian motor show to leave us seriously contemplating a minor felony to get ourselves deported down under.

FPV (Ford Performance Vehicles) Cobra FPV (Ford Performance Vehicles) Cobra-1Powered by a 404bhp 5.4-litre V8, the Cobra sits on 19-inch wheels, while that blue-on-white paintjob is standard. You've got the choice of a six-speed manual or a ZF six-speed auto too, though that snake (see the second photo) is an optional extra.

There's also a saloon version of the Cobra available, which gets a limited slip diff and track-ready suspension. But you don't want that one. You want the ute. Not least because it's more exclusive: 400 special-edition saloons are being produced, against just 100 utes.

Sadly, you won't be able to buy either: Ford Australia says that all the Cobras are already sold out. Damn. Better return all those scrumped apples, then.

2008 Volkswagen Touareg R50

(from Volkswagen Press Release) Impressive power: The V10 TDI of the Touareg R50 develops 350 PS of power and 850 Newton-meter of torqueWOLFSBURG, Germany - In a world premiere, Volkswagen presented the Touareg R50 on October 11 at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney. Its power of 258 kW / 350 PS (at 3,500 rpm) positions the new Touareg version among the most powerful SUVs in the world. The Touareg R50 can be ordered in Germany at prices starting at 88,260 Euro; it will be introduced to the market this November.

2008 Volkswagen Touareg R502008 Volkswagen Touareg R50-1The engine characteristic of the Touareg R50 is marked by a torque level nearly unattainable by the competition: The V10 TDI of the Touareg R50 develops its enormous power of 850 Newton-meter at a low 2,000 rpm. The turbo diesel was derived from the well-known ten cylinder with 230 kW / 313 PS. Adjustments to its turbo charging and modified engine management enabled a 28 kW / 37 PS increase in power and a considerable 100 Newton-meter increase in maximum torque. Under these new parameters, the SUV accelerates to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds (production car: 7.4 seconds); its top speed is 235 km/h. In relation to engine power and vehicle size, the fuel consumption of the production ten-cylinder diesel equipped with a particulate filter is a moderate 9.6 liters per 100 km (highway) and 12.6 liters per 100 km (overall). Despite big gains in power and torque, its DIN fuel consumption values have remained constant compared to the Touareg V10 TDI.

Mercedes-Benz Diesels Back in California With Launch of Bluetec E-Class

LOS ANGELES — Mercedes-Benz put its E320 Bluetec sedan on the market in California today, marking the company's return to U.S. diesel sales after a decade in which the company didn't have a diesel product that could meet stringent California emissions rules.

Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec Mercedes unveiled the new diesel in dramatic fashion on Monday at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, held at Smashbox Studios in Los Angeles.

The E320 Bluetec will be on sale as a lease-only vehicle, with numbers limited to 100 initially. It will cost $600 per month on a 24-month, 24,000-mile lease. The car will be available in seven Eastern U.S. states on the same terms starting in January.

The E320 Bluetec sedan has a 3.0-liter V6 making 210 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. Mercedes says the car's Bluetec technology "will satisfy the strictest emission regulations in the world — even in the future." The eventual plan is to sell Mercedes Bluetec vehicles in all 50 states, which the automaker says it will start doing with its M-, GL- and R-Class sport-utility vehicles in late 2008.

One enterprising California dealer has already posted the Bluetec lease offer on the Los Angeles Craigslist.

Spy Photos: Audi A7

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Audi is hard at work on the 2009 A7 four-door coupe, and spy photographers are offering an early look at the future Mercedes CLS competitor.

Audi A7-2Audi A7-3Audi A7The renderings illustrate possible styling details for the large coupe, while spy shots of the A7 mule look largely like the current Audi sedans. The mule is made up of an Audi A8 torso, mated to the front end of an Audi A6.

The four- or five-passenger coupe will likely be Quattro only, with a front-wheel drive version possible as an entry-level model in some international markets. The A7 is expected to ride on the next A6 platform, and will likely be powered by a 4.2-liter V8, with options to include a 450-horsepower 6.0-liter W12 and a 450-horsepower 5.2-liter FSI V10.

You've got a friend: new Mazda6

The new Mazda6 wants to be your friend.

That's according its Japanese designers, who say that the second-generation of Mazda's Mondeo rival is out to create 'a strong emotional tie between car and its owner, like a close friendship, which is called Kizuna in Japanese'.

new Mazda6-2new Mazda6-1new Mazda6Why so friendly? Well, Mazda says that it's all thanks to the 6's combination of roominess and dynamic design.

And it's difficult to argue with the space claim: the new 6 is longer, wider, taller and sits on a longer wheelbase than its predecessor. That means there's more leg- and shoulder-room, along with a bigger boot and a wider tailgate.

It's all tied up in a package that looks, well, not too different to the previous 6. As Paul Horrell discusses in his first drive blog, the design is more evolution than revolution, but it's still a good-looking car, with a hint of RX-6 about those front arches.

And, though it won't be as engaging as the RX-6 to drive, the 6 still looks firmly focused on road-handling dynamics.

Mazda has pulled the same trick as with its new 2 by keeping the weight down: the new 6 is some 35kg lighter than its predecessor, despite a more rigid body shell.

The 6 gets a new double-wishbone front suspension system, as well as revised power steering and bigger brakes. Engines should be livelier, too: the old car's 2.3-litre petrol engine has been replaced by a 2.5-litre four-pot, which develops 168bhp and 167lb ft of torque.

There are two other petrol engines - 1.8- and 2.0-litre efforts - and a 2.0-litre turbodiesel, which Mazda predicts will be the big seller.

The new 6 will arrive in Britain to be your best friend early next year, with the estate version following in March.

Australian Auto Show: Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series

SYDNEY, Australia — Toyota's completely redesigned Land Cruiser 200 series made its world auto show debut in Australia prior to a November on-sale date.

The big SUV gets a new 4.5-liter twin-turbo diesel V8 engine paired to a six-speed automatic transmission as well as an optional 4.7-liter V8 with a five-speed. Toyota claims better fuel economy on both engines than on previous-generation Land Cruisers.

Toyota Land Cruiser 200 SeriesToyota Land Cruiser 200 Series1Longer, wider and taller, the new Land Cruiser has a more imposing presence. The all-new platform retains its full-frame structure. A technical highlight much mentioned here is the Australia-developed kinetic dynamic suspension system (KDSS), which is standard on all Land Cruiser models.

Other features are a Torsen limited-slip center differential, multiterrain ABS, and — on gasoline models — a "crawl control" function.

Toyota has not yet released prices but they are expected to top out at more than U.S. $90,000 for the top-end Sahara model.

What this means to you: Toyota Land Cruisers are beloved in this rugged country, and this latest new version is sure to maintain that tradition — especially with Aussie-developed technology in it.

2007 Gemballa Porsche Carrera Mirage GT

(from Gemballa Press Release) High-end-Tuning for the Carrera GT: Racing-look GEMBALLA Mirage GT with more power

Around 1500 of Porsche's prestige product, the Carrera GT, have been built, all of which have now been sold. Owners worried about the individuality of their vehicle, in spite of its rareness, would be well-advised to make an appointment with GEMBALLA. Thanks to its expertise, as the only Porsche tuner GEMBALLA has comprehensively modified the high-tech car from Weissach, while at the same time adding an individual touch. In addition, performance addicts can obtain even more of what they want. The spectacular end product answers to the name of GEMBALLA Mirage GT and outshines its production-line counterpart in every respect.

2007 Gemballa Porsche Carrera Mirage GT2007 Gemballa Porsche Carrera Mirage GT12007 Gemballa Porsche Carrera Mirage GT22007 Gemballa Porsche Carrera Mirage GT3The Carrera GT engine is a dream. A meaty 5.7-litre V10 boasting 612 horsepower. What more could one want? More power of course! GEMBALLA operates on the same principle as racing drivers: "You can never have too much power". By modifying the engine management electronics, GEMBALLA has been able to squeeze out a further 60 bhp of power and 20 Nm more torque for the V10, slicing off 0.1 seconds off the time it takes to go from 0 to 100 km/h. The added performance has also been aided by a new, fully stainless steel exhaust system that now resounds through four tail pipes instead of the standard two. GEMBALLA has positioned the two extra tail pipes where the reverse and fog warning lamps used to be. The tuning specialist has relocated the two lamps to beneath the rear diffuser.

Complete racing look

With the GEMBALLA BODY-CONCEPT, the Mirage GT looks like it is planning to enter the Le Mans 24-hour race. The most conspicuous change to the front are the additional air intakes on the new front spoiler. In addition, GEMBALLA embellished the component with a spoiler lip. The bonnet has also been replaced. In the area between the wheel housing and door GEMBALLA has replaced the standard side panels with its own mudguards, with reshaped openings which blend harmoniously with the original design. Down below, new side skirts lend the vehicle a muscular line. They also come with a cooling vent for the breaks at the rear. One thing is certain! The racing look is enhanced by the new rear skirt, with its aerodynamically optimised mid section for more downforce on the rear axle.

The Mirage GT is an impressive example of GEMBALLA's capability, and represents high-end tuning at its best. The cost of the comprehensive conversion, which can only be carried out by GEMBALLA, starts from EUR 229,800.

2007 Suzuki Kizashi Concept

(from Suzuki Press Release) Suzuki Concept Kizashi, the World Premiere. The Third Phase of Suzuki's World Strategy

With the Swift, Suzuki began the first phase of its world strategy and gave undiluted form to the attribute that was the theme of the first phase: sportiness.

The Swift won awards around the world by virtue of its superior dynamics and design. Suzuki subsequently pursued sportiness in the Grand Vitara and SX4, and both cars enjoy enormous success.

2007 Suzuki Kizashi Concept2007 Suzuki Kizashi Concept12007 Suzuki Kizashi Concept2The Splash is making its world debut at the 2007 Frankfurt show and will become the first model in the second phase of Suzuki's world strategy. In this phase, the theme is families. Having focused on sportiness in the first phase, enhancing Suzuki's image in the process, Suzuki is now building upon what they have already achieved while refocusing on its main traditional strength: family-oriented user-friendliness. The next model coming after the Splash is the next-generation Alto, which combines environmental compatibility with agility.

The D-segment initiative which is now being revealed represents the beginning of the third phase of the world strategy. The main objective of this phase is status. The brand has developed to such an extent that it's able to communicate status, and Suzuki has overcome the great challenge of making cars that give their owners a feeling of status.

Why is Suzuki Entering the D-Segment?

Suzuki has made a name for itself in the compact car and sport utility vehicle segments. Its customers spread in 168 countries and regions around the world. The annual sales have shown steady growth, rising from about 1,654 thousand units in fiscal 1997 to an estimated 2,405 thousand units in fiscal 2007.

Under the mid-term five-year plan, Suzuki is targeting sales of 3 million units in fiscal 2009 (the last year of the plan). The Japanese carmaker achieved consolidated sales of 3 trillion yen in fiscal 2007, meaning that the company is close to a mid-ranking position in the worldwide motor industry.

Another major factor behind the D-segment entry is to more fully exploit the high level of Suzuki's technological competence and thus enhance its brand image.

2008 BMW 1-Series Convertible

(from BMW Press Release) For those whose definition of pure driving pleasure includes wind in the face and sunshine above, the new BMW 1 Series Convertible follows the tradition established by the iconic BMW 2002 sport sedan. The essence of such driving purity - a responsive six-cylinder engine positioned within a rear-drive chassis to provide balanced, sporty dynamics - is at the heart of this compact four-place convertible.

2008 BMW 1-Series Convertible2008 BMW 1-Series Convertible-22008 BMW 1-Series Convertible-32008 BMW 1-Series Convertible-3
The 128i Convertible, which joins the new 1 Series Coupe going on sale in the spring of 2008, will be powered by BMW's 3.0-liter, 230 horsepower inline six-cylinder engine generating 200 lb-ft of torque. Like its fixed-roof stablemate, the 128i Convertible will feature Valvetronic valvetrain management and aluminum/magnesium cylinder block construction-core elements of BMW's EfficientDynamics.

The 135i Convertible, on sale later in 2008, features BMW's twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque from as low as 1,400 rpm. With its direct piezo gasoline injectors, twin low-mass turbochargers and air-to-air intercooler, optimum performance and economy is achieved with no loss in engine response. For the 135i Convertible, acceleration from 0-62 mph is accomplished in 5.6 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. Both engines feature on-demand engine coolant pumps that improve fuel economy and reduce parasitic losses for increased efficiency.

Distinctive BMW Convertible appearance

In a mere 22 seconds-even on the move at speeds up to 25 miles per hour-the occupants within the 1 Series Convertible can go from encapsulated comfort to top-down exhilaration. If conditions dictate, the electro-hydraulically-operated softtop can be raised within the same 22 seconds, producing a distinctive silhouette enhanced by long frameless doors. The characteristic features of the BMW kidney-shaped grill, front skirt, door sills and rear skirt are identical to those of the 1 Series Coupe.

A distinctive feature of the 1 Series Convertible is the flared shoulder line which runs parallel to the road. This shoulder line flows from the hood past the A pillar to the trunk lid, forming a surface which encompasses the entire interior, giving the impression of a boat deck.

The individual sections within the L-shaped rear taillights give the vehicle a lower, sportier look. Horizontal lights integrated in the rear light clusters offer a homogeneous lighting effect with the help of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This light design, as found on other BMW models, makes the BMW 1 Series Convertible stand out at night. Also, the Adaptive Brakelights operating in two stages in relation to brake application force are yet another feature typical of BMW, with the additional benefit of extra safety on the road.

Performance with a conscience

BMW strives to produce its motor vehicles and other products with the utmost attention to environmental compatibility and protection. Integrated into the design and development of BMW automobiles are such criteria as resource efficiency and emission control in production; environmentally responsible selection of materials; recyclability during production and within the vehicle; elimination of CFCs and hazardous materials in production; and continuing research into environmentally friendly automotive power sources. Tangible results of these efforts include the recycling of bumper cladding into other vehicle components; water-based paint color coats and powder clear coats; near-future availability of hydrogen-powered models; and various design and engineering elements that help make BMWs easier to dismantle at the end of their service life.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X

(from Mitsubishi Press Release) Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announced that it was launched the Lancer Evolution X high-performance 4WD sedan, newest of the company's legendary vehicles, on October 1 at dealerships throughout Japan. Featuring a new platform, engine, and exterior and interior designs, the totally redesigned 2.0-liter model will carry a tax-inclusive price tag ranging from 2,997,750 to 3,750,600. Models fitted with the Twin Clutch SST transmission are due to be launched towards the end of November.

The development goal for the new Lancer Evolution X was to make the car as fast as possible, while also making it as safe to drive as possible. To that end Lancer Evolution X is loaded with the very latest in automotive engineering technology, including the S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) vehicle dynamics control system and the newly developed, power-efficient Twin Clutch SST (Sport Shift Transmission). Lancer Evolution X is a new-generation high-performance 4WD sedan that allows a new category of driver access to Mitsubishi's dynamic driving experience by underpinning speed with control, security and safety.

Lancer Evolution X's handsome and aggressive functional design presents an intimidating and exciting aerodynamic exterior suggestive of its superior road performance. This is complemented by a functional interior that encourages the driver to concentrate fully on piloting his machine. Lancer Evolution X uses the front end design identity common to all new Mitsubishi Motors sedans (inverted-slant nose with a trapezoidal grille design) first seen on the new Galant Fortis*. As well as shouting loud the aggressive qualities that mark a high performance sports sedan, the front fascia is crafted for optimum aerodynamic performance.

Lancer Evolution X realizes very high levels of motive and driving performance thanks to its new high-output and lightweight 2.0-liter DOHC MIVEC turbocharged engine with aluminum block, an all-new body and stiffer suspension. Despite its turbocharged pedigree the new model earns a 3-star rating for emissions that are 50% lower than the requirements of the Japanese 2005 standards. And complementing its powerful and clean road performance is the kind of a safety specification one would expect of a new-generation high-performance model: SRS dual-stage airbags for driver and front passenger, SRS knee airbag for driver and adaptive front lighting system (AFS) are all standard equipment on the GSR trim level.

Model lineup

Sporting the S-AWC and Twin Clutch SST and other cutting-edge automotive technology as well as a more comprehensive functional and convenience equipment specification, the GSR trim level (also available with a 5-speed manual transmission) leads the new Lancer Evolution X lineup. The lineup also continues to offer the RS competition base model, with a less comprehensive and simplified equipment specification to reduce weight to a minimum.

Power conversion: Mazda3 MPS Extreme

Leaving the hyper-futuristic Tokyo creations behind for a minute, here's an Aussie concept that's far less cutting-edge but, in its own way, every bit as crazy.

We'd never considered the 256bhp Mazda3 MPS as a car that needed any more power, but that hasn't stopped the Australian division of Mazda Motorsport going ahead and doing just that.

Mazda3 MPSMazda3 MPS-2This is the Mazda3 MPS Extreme, which - thanks to a reworked engine management system - now develops a frankly worrying 282bhp.

Mazda says the power upgrade will boost the performance by 'about 20 per cent' which, considering that the standard MPS will reach 60mph in just over six seconds, could mean the Extreme hitting the same speed in the low fives. If - and this is a big if - it can get the power on the road.

It's not just the engine management that has been revised: the Extreme gets a sports exhaust system and a neat-looking set of 19-inch wheels. It also sits some 25mm lower on its springs than the stock MPS, with wider wheelarches and bigger spoilers to create that authentic Outback Chav-Chic effect.

Sadly, the Extreme is just a demonstration model at the moment, and Mazda hasn't confirmed that it'll go into production. Here's hoping it does: sure, it'll torque steer like hell, but the Aussies need something to smile about after the rugby.

You didn't think we'd get right the way through an Australian story without mentioning it, did you?

Tokyo Madness: Nissan Intima

Call that a concept? After the all-out weirdness of the Toyota RiN and Hi-CT, the Nissan Intima concept - due to debut in Tokyo, naturally - looks rather restrained.

In fairness, the Intima - described as a 'New-Generation Saloon for People with a Sophisticated, Discerning Eye for Beauty' (and if you think you match that description, you really don't) - does have a mammoth set of suicide doors, but aside from that it's a relatively conventional design.

Nissan Intima1Nissan Intima2Nissan Intima3That means we could see some of the Intima's styling - sleek lines with a slightly CLS-inspired curve to the swage line - appearing on the next generation of Nissan's executive car, called the Maxima in the US and the Teana in Japan.

It's a model we don't get in the UK at the moment, but it shares a platform with the Murano so could easily find its way to these shores.

Nissan has gone to town on the Intima's interior, with a swivelling passenger seat and swathes of leather and shiny metal demonstrating up-market intentions.

Nonetheless, until it gets an algae-filled steering wheel and a gearshift made of recycled ivory, we're refusing to recognise it as a proper concept.

2008 GeigerCars Ford GT

(from GeigerCars Press Release) The legendary Ford GT is now even faster!GeigerCars.de packs even more performance power into Ford’s newest model.

Ford GT 2008Ford GT 2008-2Ford GT-2008-3The Ford GT is a living legend. For those who have driven this car before it is hard to imagine what it means to gain 29 % more performance power. Its supercharged engine with an impressive 701 bhp/ 523kW producing a peak torque of 7407 in-lbs reaches a top speed of 211 mph. The engine’s shear force gives you goose bumps and its deep base just about takes your breath away. With the tuning modifications carried out by GeigerCars.de the Ford GT really outdoes itself.

Munich’s tuning specialists at GeigerCars.de converted the Ford GT 5.4 liter V8 engine entirely. A 3.3 liter serial compressor replaces the 2.3 liter compressor and the boost pressure was raised from 0.8 to 1.25 bar. The engine electronics were reprogrammed to calibrate the GeigerCars.de power components. Enlarged throttle valves and a sport air filter provide its eight cylinders with more circulation. The engine and transmission’s cooling system are optimized to meet the needs of the Ford GT’s expanded performance. With the first step on the gas this sports car instantly demonstrates what it is capable of: a true race car.

From 0 to 62mph in 3.5 seconds

With the tuning kit from GeigerCars.de the sprint from 0 to 62 mph takes just 3.5 seconds. The Ford GT can cover a quarter mile in 10.9 seconds. Its driving force is noticeable in first gear and does not let up - this car does not stop giving until reaching maximum speed at 211mph. Only the tire’s loading limit bridle the engine’s overwhelming power. Its top speed is limited electronically. The driving experience is acoustically enhanced with the installation of a high performance exhaust system from GeigerCars.de which accentuates the engine’s solid sound. The Ford GT’s powerful tailpipes have a diameter of 110 millimeters. Having removed the rear bumper the tailpipes impress in full view.

Controlling shear force with confidence

Its high performance break system with monoblock brake calipers produced by GeigerCars.de is made for deceleration performance. Even at over 186mph the Ford GT breaks quickly and confidently. For quick acceleration and optimum control when taking curves GeigerCars.de combines impressive 245/35R 20 size tires and 9Jx20 light alloy wheels on the front axle and 325/30R 21 size tires and 11x21 wheels on the rear axle. Such distribution gives the car a safe grip even at fast cornering. The Ford GT’s impressive outer appearance is completed with the addition of a Geigercars.de wheel set in black with stainless steel inlays.

Cab to the future: Toyota FT-MV

Too often the world of show concepts has neglected the humble airport-run minivan.

What of the cabbie and his dreams? Does he, too, not have the right to look expectantly to a brighter, more ambitious future?

Perhaps the Toyota FT-MV can help. Another Tokyo show concept, it's a surprisingly realistic vision of the next generation of minivans, a six-seater replete with individual DVD screens and ottoman-style footrests.

Toyota FT-MV Toyota FT-MV 1Toyota describes the FT-MV - short for FuTure MiniVan, predictably - as boasting 'a bold, vibrant and stately exterior', which is a bit ambitious, we fear: we're seeing a stubby Mercedes Viano with the new Accord's grille on the front.

Never mind, though - in the world of airport vans, this is a genuinely seismic development. Toyota insiders say the FT-MV could go into production next year, so expect to see a clutch queuing up in the Terminal 1 taxi rank soon after.

Sixties chic: the Vandenbrink GTO

We saw drawings of the 599 GTB-derived GTO back in May and while we were impressed with its faithful recreation of the 60s icon, we have to admit we were sceptical that it'd ever reach the road.
But Dutchman Michiel van den Brink has confirmed that the GTO is indeed set to hit production early next year - though he'll only be building five of them.

Vandenbrink GTOVandenbrink GTO2Vandenbrink GTO3Time to party like it's 1962: the Vandenbrink GTO is set to enter production and evoke all those happy tri-nostrilled memories of the original Ferrari 250 GTO.

The first deliveries of the GTO are due to reach customers in 2009, with two versions available: the 599 GTO and 630 GTO. Both take the 599 GTB as a donor car and, courtesy of race tuners Edo Competition, boost up the power.

The 599 GTO retains the GTB's six-litre V12 but gets an extra 39bhp, taking overall output to an impressive 650bhp.
The 630 GTO is even more potent: the V12 has been bored out to 6.3 litres, meaning that power stands at 750bhp.That's good for a 0-62mph time of just 3.4 seconds, and a top speed of 218mph, which makes the 630 GTO a fraction quicker than even the Ferrari Enzo.
Predictably, it ain't cheap. A fully specced 630 GTO will set you back some £875,000, including the base 599 GTB that you'll need to hand over for Vandenbrink to cut to pieces.

Or you could always opt for one of those classy 250 GTO replica kits to stick onto a Datsun 240Z. Your choice.
