2008 Sportec SP600 Porsche 911 Turbo Convertible

(from Sportec AG Press Release) The Sky is the Limit: Sportec SP600 Convertible
Unadulterated pleasure. The smell of fine leather, accurate workmanship in each detail, an eroticising sound - and performance at its best:

The Sportec SP 600 Convertible.
Enjoyed beneath the open sky - a true revelation for any connoisseur and any aficionado of automotive perfection.

A result of interminable development work in Hoeri near Zurich. Breathtaking performance and torque values and the resulting driving performances enable the SP 600 Convertible to something greater than just open gliding.

Porsche 911 Turbo Convertible-1Porsche 911 Turbo Convertible-2Presently, the introduction to the Sportec Pleasure begins with the SP530 delivering 530hp and ends with the top-of-the-line model SP680 revealing 680hp. The ingredients for this exclusive high-performance and precision engine from Switzerland are, among others, special Sportec turbochargers as well as a Sportec sports exhaust system with a sound flap system and high-performance catalysts. Modifications to the suction unit and a special sports air filter with an increased airflow take care of the necessary amount of intake air required for this high-performance and precision powertrain.

In order to make sure that the power will reach the tarmac without any loss, the Sportec engineers have provided the vehicle with an additional sports clutch. The electronic system of each customer's car will be individually reprogrammed at the Sportec all-wheel test rig.

An aerodynamically optimised Sportec front spoiler, unobtrusive side skirts, the corresponding 3-part rear apron with a carbon centre part, as well as a larger carbon rear wing will complete the SP 600 Convertible - if desired - technically, but also visually. Those who still want more will have the opportunity to frame, for example, the rear-view mirror or the air intakes with shining carbon. The Sportec aluminium pedal kit and the aluminium footrest come along in a sporty fashion as well. And those who like it a little harder may lower the vehicle by another 20 mm with the Sportec suspension kit.

2008 Maserati Quattroporte Review

The Maserati Quattroporte promises all of the above. The legendary Italian manufacturer has a strong tradition of competition and sports car building and has fused their technology and sporting pedigree into the opulence of a luxury saloon.

The tested car was the brand new 2008 Executive GT Automatic; the flagship variant of the luxury four-door five-seater Quattroporte. Styled by noted Italian automotive designer Pininfarina, this car takes design cues from the ‘70s. There’s a retrospective and nostalgic look to the rear quarter of the Quattroporte; the ‘C’ pillars and boot area are reminiscent of some of the sports saloons of thirty years ago.

2008 Maserati Quattroporte-12008 Maserati Quattroporte-2The front end and grille are aggressively styled and the combination of all of the athletic curves and muscular lines, combine to make the entire car a boldly styled and achingly handsome, if intimidating form.

At cruising speeds, the big car is unflustered, dignified and sweeps along motorways and ‘A’ roads with grace. Inside the sumptuous leather cabin, everything’s calm, the famously immoderate way that Maserati furnishes its cars is obvious wherever you look and the driver’s seat is a very pleasant place indeed. My only mild grumbles are that there’s less legroom in the rear than a Lexus LS or a Jaguar XJ and that the wind noise is a bit louder than I would have expected.

Engine noise is a different story, it just fantastic. The big Ferrari-sourced V8 produces a deliciously thunderous growl when you goad it. It’s worth just sitting and gunning it, listening to the big twin exhausts barking in symphony with the roar of the tuned motor. On the drop-off there’s a lovely series of muffled cracks. Working hard through the gears is inspiring – it makes all the right noises.

2008 Buick Invicta Concept

(from General Motors Press Release) Buick took another step to bolster its global design presence with a sneak peek at a luxurious show car it plans to reveal in China at the Beijing Motor Show on April 19. Named Invicta, Buick’s show car reflects the way General Motors utilizes design and engineering talent around the world to execute a premium vehicle with international appeal.

Buick -1Buick -2The Invicta, which is Latin for “invincible,” evolves Buick’s global design direction from the Riviera concept introduced last year in Shanghai. The Invicta show car was co-developed by GM design centers in North America and China to meet customers’ expectations equally in the world’s two largest automotive markets.

“Buick’s global appeal created an opportunity for GM Design Centers to elevate our collaboration to new levels. Using our virtual reality centers in Warren, Mich. and Shanghai, designers fused the best ideas from both cultures during the development of the Invicta, ” said Edward T. Welburn, vice president, General Motors Global Design. “The result will set a new design standard for Buick, and it couldn’t have been achieved by one studio working in isolation. The Invicta represents another significant design milestone in Buick’s history.”

Invicta draws inspiration from the Riviera concept with a modern and graceful exterior design matched by a sumptuous interior. Invicta pays homage to Buicks of the 1940s through the 1970s with its nostalgic sweepspear design cue, a curved line running the length of the car. The exterior also features Buick’s signature vertical chrome waterfall grille and a new look to its portholes. The Invicta interior will share Riviera’s ambient lighting feature and lavish design.

Buick returns the Invicta name after a 45-year hiatus. Buick originally introduced the Invicta in North America as a production vehicle from 1959 to 1963. It is the first time the nameplate has appeared on a Buick in China.

Brand New Lexus IS-F Starts Smoking on Dyno (Rolling Road)

This IS-F was on the dyno being tested for horsepower, when on the third round (that I saw) the clutch went out (or something mechanical went wrong). The passenger of the car ran out and checked the back, as smoke poured out. It was hard to see exactly what happened, but you can hear the clutch (if it was one) going out at the end. Great car, it was unbelievably loud down there.

Saab Turbo X - Limited Edition

Saab Australia has announced pricing for the eagerly awaited all-wheel-drive limited edition performance Saab Turbo X. Only 30 of these limited edition models will be made available to customers in Australia and New Zealand, with 25 Sport Sedan and five SportCombi models arriving between June and September this year.

The Turbo X is the first to debut the XWD (cross wheel drive) system which continuously distributes engine drive torque between the front and rear axles and also between the rear wheels.
To optimise traction at take-off, the XWD system anticipates the engagement of the rear wheels unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems which need to detect front wheel slip before rear drive is activated.

Saab Turbo X -1Saab Turbo X -2It also boasts an active rear limited-slip differential (eLSD) as standard, which can transfer up to 50 per cent of maximum rear torque between the rear wheels, to whichever has more grip. The Turbo X is powered by Saab’s award winning 2.8-litre turbocharged V6 engine, producing 206kW at 5500rpm and peak torque of 400Nm between 2150rpm and 4500rpm.This translates into a zero to 100km/h time of just 5.5 seconds.

The limited edition Turbo X model is identifiable by its deeper front lip spoiler, re-profiled bumper, rear spoiler and bespoke 18-inch alloy wheels in a grey titanium-like finish. The interior features black leather sports seats and carbon-fibre highlights on the main fascia, door inserts, glove box and gear shift console which is unique to Turbo X.

In recognition of Saab’s turbo heritage, the Turbo X boost gauge is a replica of the original 900 Turbo display, and owners will receive a unique “Ready for Take-off” message when they start the car including their name and edition number of the car.

Pricing
Sport Sedan 2.8TV6 $88,800 (Automatic) $91,300 (Manual)
SportCombi 2.8TV6 $91,300 (Automatic) $93,800 (Manual)

BMW X3 Ad Makes Fun of American Truck Based SUVs - Video

This BMW X3 TV commercial gave us a good laugh today with its overly sarcastic humor. It depicts a guy driving an American SUV (it looks like a GM model) who suddenly hits the brakes only to see the body of his vehicle flying away thus uncovering the truck hidden beneath it. Now if only we had to show you a countermeasure ad featuring the BMW X3 attempting to go off-road.

2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Review

What's New for 2009
A 2.4-liter 168-horsepower four-cylinder engine is newly standard on the GTS trim level this year. The DE and ES trim levels retain the 2.0-liter 152-hp four. The GTS also gains new gauges this year, while the FAST Key keyless ignition/entry system migrates to the Sun and Sound Package, leaving the hard drive navigation system as a stand-alone option. The ES trim gains an optional Sport Package that includes some of the GTS's styling elements, such as the big rear wing.

2009 Mitsubishi LancerLast year, the Mitsubishi Lancer had a minor problem. Visually, it promised to be more than its humble price tag would imply. The GTS trim level, in particular, boasted a giant rear wing and 18-inch wheels that fervently declared, "I can go fast." Problem was, it actually didn't. The car's 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine produced class-competitive 0-60 sprints, but it had virtually no low-end power, requiring the driver to maintain an objectionably loud engine speed of at least 3,200 rpm in order to achieve even moderate passing power.

For the 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer's lower DE and ES trim level, the old engine carries over for the more sedate-driving, economy-minded consumer. But for the driver who wants his or her fast-looking car to be, well, fast, Mitsubishi has dropped a larger 2.4-liter engine into the GTS's engine bay. Thanks to increased displacement, it produces 16 more horsepower and, more importantly, 21 additional pound-feet of torque. This engine is not only more responsive, it's also substantially quieter. Zero-to-60-mph times drop by about a second, and fuel economy -- although not particularly impressive -- is about the same as the smaller engine.

The 2009 Lancer isn't a mainstream economy car like a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, as it lacks the refinement, fuel economy and reputation to match up with these cars. But that's fine by us. In addition to its aggressive styling, the Lancer boasts above-average handling and an impressive array of high-tech features that until recently were reserved for luxury automobiles. Those interested in finding the sportiest option available could be happier with a Mazda 3, but if you're looking for a car that stands out as a viable alternative to the small sedan status quo, this Mitsubishi is worth a look.

2008 Lexus IS F Review

The letter F is an auspicious one in Lexus lore. Back in the mid-'80s, when the Lexus brand was still in the planning stages, Toyota insiders referred to the prospective luxury division as "Circle F." And the car that put Lexus on the map, the LS 400, was known internally as Flagship One, or F1. For 2008, the letter F is back: The company has decided to crash the über-sport sedan party with the 2008 Lexus IS-F, a hard-edged performance car based on the IS-series sedan and aimed squarely at perennial magazine-cover fodder like the Audi RS4, BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG.

2008 Lexus IS F-12008 Lexus IS F-2The IS-F marks the official launch of Lexus' F line, and it's akin to the aforementioned competitors' in-house performance divisions. As such, Lexus has gone to great lengths to differentiate the IS-F from its more sedate IS-series brethren. Take the IS-F's exclusive power plant, for example, which begins life as the gas-swilling half of the LS 600h L's hybrid engine and then gets a thorough makeover from Toyota's longtime performance partner, Yamaha. The end result is a 5.0-liter V8 that churns out 416 horsepower and 371 pound-feet of torque, compared with 306 and 277, respectively, from the IS 350's already potent 3.5-liter V6. Likewise, the IS-F eschews the IS 350's six-speed automatic transmission for a heavily modified version of the LS 460's eight-speed unit that boasts Ferrari-quick upshifts and automatic throttle blips on downshifts. The singularity and complexity of this powertrain serve notice to the old guard that this Lexus means business. Like its F1-cum-LS 400 forebear, the 2008 Lexus IS-F is designed to go toe to toe with the best.

Outside the engine room, however, the IS-F has a few kinks to work out. For one thing, while its extensively revised suspension is dynamite on the track, the IS-F falls well short of the ride-handling balance for which certain rivals are justly famous. For another, its exterior styling cues range from the controversial (e.g., the reshaped hood and snout required to accommodate the 5.0-liter mill) to the downright tacky (e.g., the quad-stacked tailpipes that aren't actually connected to the exhaust system). Its German competition, on the other hand -- as well as the upcoming Cadillac CTS-V -- feature relatively compliant rides and subtle aesthetics.

There's no doubt that the IS-F is a serious driver's car, but we can't help but wonder whether its hardcore personality is a little over the top for this segment, notwithstanding its commendably hushed interior and rather incongruous lack of a manual transmission option. Enthusiasts with 60 large to plunk down on a sport sedan may find the IS-F a smidge too fast and furious for their tastes.

Nonetheless, the 2008 Lexus IS-F is a thrilling car on its own merits, and its uncompromising nature indicates that Lexus is willing to do what it takes to ensure that its sporting F models will be competitive with class leaders. The company has already hit two home runs with the letter F, and while it hasn't quite knocked the IS-F out of the park, it's still a promising first step toward challenging the established heavyweights for the factory performance crown.

Record first quarter for Ferrari and Maserati

Fiat Group’s luxury brands Ferrari and Maserati have both posted record results for the first quarter of 2008, despite global economic uncertainty and increasing stock market volatility.

Ferrari’s profits have been fueled by higher sales in its V12-powered line up, the 612 Scaglietti and 599 GTB Fiorano, with customer deliveries jumping 4 percent to 1,654 units.

Revenue grew almost 20 percent to 456 million euros, with its trading profit almost doubling to 59 million euros compared with the same period last year.

Maserati gran turismoLast year, Ferrari set its best record for revenues, up 15.3 percent to 1.67 billion euros. Its trading profit was up 45.3 percent to 266 million euros and unit sales up 11.1 percent to 6,488 cars.

Maserati increased vehicle deliveries 21.3 percent to 2,234 units in the first quarter, greatly due to the success of the new GranTurismo four-seat coupe.

This has resulted in a 10 million euros trading profit compared with 1 million euros it had lost in the same period last year.

In 2007 Maserati reported a 24 million euros trading profit, returning to the black after 18 years in the red.

Covini C6W - The Six-Wheeled Supercar

Covini Engineering is a small company dedicated to constructing innovative automobile prototypes, as well as other experimental crafts. Back in 2005, they came up with the idea to add an extra axle to the front of a supercar to increase the car’s braking abilities, comfort, and directional stabiliy. The Covini C6W pictured below is the fruit of their labor.

Covini C6W -1Covini C6W -2The six-wheeled super gt packs more than 400 hp, while producing 470 Nm of torque at 2700 rpm. Not overly impressive given the cars savage appearance, but still respectable.

In the front, the Covini C6W rides on 15-inch rims, while the back sits on dubs. The overall look created is part Ferrari, part Lambo, and part jaguar XJ220. And we’re sure you could toss a few more design influences into the pot.

Since the C6W was built as a prototype, no pricing or production info is available. But we’re sure that if you want one Covini wouldn’t turn you down if you made them an attractive offer.

Peugeot RC Z will be built

The Peugeot RC Z has been confirmed for production. After claims about gauging public reaction, and teasing us with drives in a concept car that felt production-ready, the French manufacturer has done the decent thing and decided to build the RC Z.

The production model will be shown at the 2009 Frankfurt show, two years after the concept was first unveiled. Sales will start in spring 2010 and Peugeot is promising that ‘specification of the production model will be based on the key features of the RC Z concept car’.
Just what does that mean for the Peugeot RC Z concept?

Peugeot RC Z-1Peugeot RC Z-2Peugeot RC Z -3Expect the looks to remain all but identical. Peugeot is already offering RC Z-inspired grilles on the 308 and the company hopes the curvy glass rear screen will make production. On the concept it was made from Perspex but those clever Peugeot engineers have figured out how to make a glass version. But the double-bubble screen corrupts vision, and along with cost considerations that may be enough to rule out the fancy rear screen. It's safe to say it will also be a shock if the carbonfibre roof survives.

The concept produced 218bhp from its 1.6-litre turbocharged engine although Peugeot is worried about the production feasibility of such a high output. But Mini has squeezed 208bhp from the same engine for the John Cooper Works cars so expect 200bhp-plus in the production cars, plus detuned versions and diesels.

2008 Supercharged Lotus Elise SC

Lotus has introduced the newest addition to its 2008 line-up, the 162kW Supercharged Elise SC. Identifiable by its new wheels and spoiler, the Elise SC sports an all-new supercharger setup on the current 1.8-litre 2-ZZ VVTL-i engine. Using a smaller Eaton rotor pack than that of the Exige S combined with the absence of an intercooler and associated pipework, the supercharged powerplant in the Elise SC is 8kg lighter than in the Exige S.

2008 Supercharged Lotus Elise SC-12008 Supercharged Lotus Elise SC-2Weighing in at 870kg, the Elise SC is just 10kg or one percent heavier than the Elise S, but is 62 percent more powerful with 162kW and 212Nm at 5000rpm. Performance of the Elise SC is stunning: 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds, 0-160km/h in 10.7 seconds and a top speed of 241km/h.

It also stops as well as it goes, with a unique combination of AP Racing calipers up front and Brembo calipers down back linked to 282mm vented and cross-drilled discs. Despite its track-day heritage, it also features an advanced ABS system which is so unobtrusive, most drivers will not realise it’s working – unless it’s needed, and even then the system keeps a subtly low profile.

A new bespoke alloy wheel design also increases the width half an inch to 8-inches, offering superior grip from its Lotus specific Yokohama AD07 LTS 225/45 R17 tyres. With such a small and efficient engine, despite its super car performance the Elise SC returns estimated combined fuel economy of just 8.5litres/100km.

Due to increased customer demand, two new packages are now available across the Elise range to transform the car either into a comfortable cruiser or dedicated track-day weapon.

1988 Ferrari TestarossaDescription:
Anyone with an appetite for a now-classic Ferrari Testarossa will want to get in line for the example pictured here. It is finished in Black over Beige and is a desirable later 88 model that received the 5-lug upgrade from the center locks on the original car. This is obviously safer and more user-friendly. This Red Head was sold new in Woodland Hills, CA before coming up here to the Seattle area with its second owner and has only 21,327 miles on the odometer. A full service including new belts and brake system refurbishment were completed in the summer of 2006 at the local Ferrari dealer. Included with purchase are the maintenance record for the aforementioned service, the full original handbooks in the leather portfolio, tools, and the original window sticker showing that it cost $135,050 new. The desirable color, low miles, excellent history, and completeness of this car make it a premium example in the marketplace.

2010 Ford Fiesta Spotted in the Wild, Then De-Wilded

Prototypes for the North American-spec Ford Fiesta have been spotted in Dearborn, giving us our first look at the non-hatchback version. As expected, this prototype takes many cues right off the Verve four-door concept car that bowed at this year’s Detroit Auto Show. The camouflage keeps us from seeing just how verbatim the translation from concept to production actually is, but the differences will most assuredly only be trim differences designed to make the concept model as sexy as possible.

2010 Ford Fiesta Spotted -12010 Ford Fiesta Spotted -2It appears that the concept’s backlight might be a bit more raked than the production model, and the rear overhang may be a bit longer, but those impressions may be from a slight change of angle, and the camouflage cladding.

As of now, we’re told that this four-door sedan is the only model destined for our shores, but the three or five-door hatchbacks could easily make the move to U.S. showrooms if demand is deemed strong enough.

BMW M3 Convertible - Pics

To signal the beginning of sales of the M3 convertible in the UK, BMW decided to release two-dozen more photos of its drop-top super coupe, and that's enough of a reason for us to include them in a gallery with its white counterpart.

BMW M3 Convertible -1BMW M3 Convertible -2Everything remains the same, including the choice of either a six-speed manual or six-speed DCT gearbox, all without that pesky roof to keep you from enjoying the 420 hp, 4.0-liter V8 when you're sending it up into its 8.400-rpm redline.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S - 2008 Beijing Auto Show

Slated to go on sale in August, priced starting at $176,000, the vehicle boasts a twin-turbocharged 4.8-liter V8 that's rated at a whopping 550 horsepower — a 10 percent jump over the standard Cayenne Turbo's 500 hp and a significant bump from the 520 hp generated by the previous-generation Turbo S. The new model also gets a healthy nudge in torque, to 553 lb-ft, although Porsche says fuel consumption figures remain unchanged.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo SThe new Turbo S accelerates from zero to 60 mph in less than 4.8 seconds and has a top speed of 174 mph.

Porsche is beefing up the hardware also. There are standard 21-inch SportPlus alloy wheels and a performance exhaust system with quad aluminum tailpipes, as well as air suspension with automatic leveling, ride height control and active suspension management. Also standard is Servotronic speed-sensitive variable-rate power steering and dynamic chassis control. For the first time, Porsche is also offering ceramic composite brakes as an extra-cost option.

The Turbo S is distinguished from its lesser brethren by such details as body-color wheel arches and air intakes, as well as a new lava gray metallic paint scheme. Inside, the vehicle is equipped with exclusive sport bucket seats and a lavish multimedia system with touchscreen navigation and Bose surround-sound audio.

What this means to you: Porsche must be convinced there are sufficient Chinese tycoons with the wherewithal — and desire — to purchase a 550-hp utility vehicle.

2010 Aston Martin Rapide - Spy Car Spy Video

The 2010 Aston Martin Rapide is now undergoing high-speed tests on the Nürburgring test track in Germany. And like the previous prototypes, this Rapide test mule has only minimal camouflage.

The lack of a cover reveals an interesting new design twist — a roof that's nearly all glass. There are a few pieces of equipment attached to this particular prototype, but it's a relatively unobstructed design otherwise. A few other luxury sedans have similar setups, so this appears to be an emerging trend in the segment.

Like the current range of Aston Martin coupes, the Rapide sedan sounds as good as it looks. Not a surprise really, as the Rapide will use essentially the same 5,935cc V12 as the DB9. Output is expected to jump significantly, though, so expect to see the final number approaching 500 horsepower. The corporate ZF-built six-speed automatic transmission is the likely gearbox and it will send the power to the rear wheels.

Production of the 2010 Aston Martin Rapide is expected to start in Graz, Austria, in late 2009. Supplier Magna Steyr will build up to 2,000 Rapides a year under contract with Aston Martin.

2008 Edo Competition Ferrari 630 Scuderia

(from Edo Competition Press Release) Fascinating shapes! edo competition introduces the brand new aerodynamics package edo 630 Scuderia!

Edo competition Motorsport GmbH, one of the top names in sophisticated modifications of Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche cars is now introducing the brand new edo 630 Scuderia aerodynamics package for the Ferrari 599 GTB! The aim was to underline the perfect shapes of the Ferrari 599 GTB and to adapt the aerodynamics to higher top speed and meet the increased cooling demands caused by the improved power output without compromising the styling of the car.

2008 Edo Competition Ferrari 630 Scuderia-12008 Edo Competition Ferrari 630 Scuderia-2The flow-optimized front apron features an enlarged cooling air inlet which improves the engines thermal balance. The larger center inlet also provides cool air for the brakes, thereby increasing their service life and fade resistance. In addition to that the front spoiler lip improves downforce on the front axle.

The newly developed side skirts reduce crosswind sensitivity and improve wheel arch ventilation in combination with the new rear apron. To achieve this, a new undertray with a wider diffuser now with 6 blades was mounted on both sides to enhance rear axle downforce at high speeds. Additionally a carbon fiber lip is mounted on the trunk lid to provide extra stability and rear downforce.

Naturally all parts are made from ultra-lightweight carbon fiber, which means a weight reduction of nearly 50 kg (110 lb) is a welcome side effect of this aerodynamics package.

Nissan GT-R V-spec arriving in 2009 - Video

According to latest reports Nissan will be building an even more potent version of the GT-R but it won’t arrive until 2009, one year after the super-coupe is launched in most markets. The new model will carry the familiar V-Spec title, a badge used by the older R32-R34 series cars to denote the GT-R’s racing success as well as some serious performance enhancements.

A Nissan source has revealed to Edmunds that a V-spec version of the all-new GT-R will arrive in 2009 as a 2010 model. The new car is still under development but when it arrives it will be more powerful and lighter than the standard version, which suggest the rumored 7m 38s Nurburgring time could fall further.

Previous V-spec cars featured an improved brake package, lowered suspension, and plenty of carbon-fiber and aluminum. The latest GT-R series was also rumored to feature a high-performance ‘EVO’ model that was tipped to weigh up to 250kg less than the standard car and develop up to 530hp.

Shanghai VW Lavida - 2008 Beijing Auto Show

BEIJINGVolkswagen's new Lavida sedan debuted at the 2008 Beijing Auto Show. The Lavida, developed in cooperation with local partner Shanghai Auto, is said to be "thoroughly tailored to the automotive wishes of modern Chinese society." Apparently Chinese society is not so demanding in its automotive wishes.

Shanghai VW Lavida -1Shanghai VW Lavida -2The front-wheel-drive Lavida, known during its gestation as Model Y, has little to distinguish itself aesthetically from the dozens of competitors it faces from Chinese and overseas competitors.

VW brags in its press material that the Lavida is "the first Volkswagen to be designed and developed entirely in China" and that it is intended to "blend into the urban environments of Chinese metropolises like Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou." It blends a little too well.

The car is relatively large by Chinese standards, measuring 181 inches long — 2 inches longer than a Jetta. It will be offered with a choice of four-cylinder engines, with an optional six-speed Tiptronic available.

Standard features include antilock brakes, front airbags, climate control, a CD player with an MP3 interface, power windows and an anti-theft alarm. A DVD nav system, CD changer and side airbags are among the options.

The Lavida will be assembled by Shanghai VW and goes on sale this summer.

What this means to you: If this is the best we can expect from its Shanghai R&D center, perhaps VW should go back to the drawing board in Wolfsburg.

2008 Audi TT 0-60 in 3.5 - HPA’s 565 horsepower

The car started its journey in Germany to be painted in custom Lamborghini Gallardo orange. Later the car was shipped to HPA Motosports who built the TT from the ground up. A stock 2008 Audi TT 3.2L V6 produces a total of 250-hp.

2008 Audi TT 0-60 -12008 Audi TT 0-60 -22008 Audi TT 0-60 -3But with HPA’s twin-turbo modification, along with a cast-aluminum short-runner intake manifold, dual air-to-air side-mount intercoolers, proprietary silicone boost plumbing and a high-flow fuel-supply system, this orange TT now produces an outstanding 565-hp. The result? 0-60mph comes in at 3.5 seconds while the 0-100mph takes just 8.4 seconds.

Transferring the power to the wheels via the S-tronic transmission required some work as well. HPA threw in performance clutch packs and a reprogrammed mechatronic which increased launch control revs from 3000rpm to 5000.

All this will cost you about $60,000 in upgrades. However you can now take on that Nissan GT-R without any hesitation.

2008 Beijing Auto Show Preview Chang'an Zhixiang

CHONGQING, China — Long after teaming up with Ford and Suzuki, Chang'an Auto has retained its reputation as a leading minivehicle producer. But as it moves relentlessly toward an aggressive goal of building 2 million vehicles a year by 2010, Chang'an continues to roll out ever larger and more expensive models under its own Chana brand. Its latest unveiling, set for the 2008 Beijing Auto Show this month: the Zhixiang sedan.

Chang'an Zhixiang-1Chang'an Zhixiang-2Previously known by its internal code name CV8, the Zhixiang measures 181 inches long — about 6 inches longer than a Chang'an-built Ford Focus — and is powered by a 2.0-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine that makes 150 horsepower and 142 pound-feet of torque. Mated to a four-speed automatic transmission, the engine enables a top speed of 125 mph and 0-60-mph acceleration in 11.2 seconds.

The Zhixiang sedan will be well equipped when it goes on sale later this year, with such features as traction control, a CD player, trip computer, air-conditioning, power seats and cruise control. Prices are expected to start at around $11,400.

Chang'an's growing lineup of modern vehicles now includes the Ben Ben minicar and the Jiexun minivan (including a hybrid version of the latter). Company executives say they plan to introduce another 25 self-developed models, along with more than a dozen engines, by 2010.

What this means to you: When Ford first partnered with Chang'an, it was one of the few Chinese automakers left with no major overseas alliances. The partnership appears to be growing stronger each year.

Kia Soul Burner

Are you ready for Kia to bare its Soul? Having built up a reputation for producing cars that are dependable, practical and great value for money, the fast-growing Korean brand is now set to turn on the style with this daring SUV-inspired supermini. The Soul was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show last month as three distinctive variants, each demonstrating the potential for personalisation that the production model will offer when it goes on sale in 2009.

When the wraps were pulled off the three models on the stand at the Swiss exhibition, the Burner caught our eye in particular. So we went to Kia’s European headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany, for an exclusive first drive. Walking up to the Soul, it’s instantly clear that it doesn’t quite fit into the traditional supermini class. With its tall stance, upright rear and slightly raised ride height, it stands out from every other small car.

Kia Soul BurnerLook closer and you will spot the bulging wheelarches, sloping roofline and distinctive side window profile. To that, the Burner adds deep bumpers and matt-black paintwork, as well as red accents on the front grille, door mirrors, front indicator lenses and chunky 19-inch alloy wheels.

And to complete the ‘bad boy look’, a subtle, tattoo-style dragon graphic stretches asymmetrically down both sides of the vehicle. The best news for buyers, though, is that apart from the special bum-pers and tweaked front and rear lamps, this is the car you will see in Kia’s UK showrooms next year. All the sheet metal parts – such as the doors, wings and roof – have been signed off for production. And it’s a similar story on the inside of the Burner. Under the bold black and red leather trim lies the same cockpit the factory model will have.

The dashboard is well laid out, and the stereo and heating controls are mounted high in the centre console. There’s plenty of room for the four occupants – at 4,105mm long, the Soul is slightly bigger than supermini rivals. Neat touches inside include universal iPod connection, along with some clever storage ideas.

That’s not all. Turn on the sound system, and LEDs positioned behind the speaker grilles pulse to the beat of the music. But this is no concept car gimmick – the hi-tech feature will be offered as an optional extra!

The Soul is based on Kia’s all-new small car platform, which will also form the basis of a supermini-MPV, as well as the next-generation Rio. And although the model wasn’t in its final state of tune when we tried it, there is plenty of potential. The ride is composed, and the handling is agile, with precise and well weighted steering. Enhancing the driving experience is a high-set seating position and upright windscreen, which combine to give excellent visibility.

2008 Bentley Continental Flying Spur Review

It's hard to go wrong these days if you're willing to spend well in excess of $100,000 on a luxury sedan. Take cars like the Rolls-Royce Phantom, Maybach 57 and Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG for a spin and you'll find that there's really not a bad one in the bunch. This poses a challenge for luxury automakers, as it's difficult to stand out in such impressive company. Nonetheless, with the assistance of parent company Volkswagen, the 2008 Bentley Continental Flying Spur pulls it off, offering up a distinctive combination of S65-like performance along with enough classic British luxury to rival the more sedate Phantom and Maybach.

2008 Bentley Continental Flying Spur-12008 Bentley Continental Flying Spur-2Essentially a four-door version of Bentley's Continental GT coupe, the Flying Spur has sporting bloodlines that are readily apparent in its breathtaking power and athletic handling and braking. The twin-turbo W12 engine whisks the Flying Spur to a stratospheric top speed of 195 mph, making it the fastest four-door sedan currently in production. In braking tests from 60 to zero, the big Bentley repeatedly stopped in about 116 feet, which is more befitting a sports car than a luxury barge. It also weaved through our slalom cones at a brisk 65.1 mph, just 0.1 mph slower than the Continental GT coupe.

At the same time, the Flying Spur's lavish cabin is also world-class, with leather or wood trim adorning virtually every visible surface. Bentley says that installing said trim on the steering wheel alone requires five hours of labor -- and it feels like it, too. Some of the Volkswagen/Audi-sourced switchgear strikes us as a bit mundane for the Bentley brand, but it's certainly more functional than the company's interior bits of yore. And while the Flying Spur may not be able to match the sheer curbside presence of the imposing Maybach, let alone the downright intimidating Phantom, its elegant lines and proportions leave no doubt as to its ultraluxury credentials.

At a base price of $170,990, or roughly half that of the Rolls-Royce or Maybach, the 2008 Bentley Continental Flying Spur is a compelling package. It might even be the closest thing to a bargain that this exclusive segment has to offer.

Opel Insignia (Holden Vectra) revealed

Holden pulled the Vectra model from the Australian market in 2005 amid slow sales and the rising import cost, but that might all change now that Opel has come out with a new Vectra, better known as the Opel Insignia.

Opel Insignia-1Opel Insignia-2Not only does it look absolutely brilliant, but the new car may go a long way in helping GM’s ailing fortunes. The Insignia will be sold as the next-gen Saturn Aura in the States and there is speculation that it may even return to Australasia as the new Vectra (or possibly change name to Insignia),

Update - GM Holden would not comment about the possibility of a Vectra comeback to Australia.

The new Opel will be in European dealerships this October with five engines choices which all meet Euro 5 emissions standards. All variants are available with manual or six-speed automatic transmissions. Buyers can pick between a hatchback or saloon and the car sits five. Some of the new features include a peculiar new headlight system which works out where to point the headlights (nine different settings) under different conditions.

The entry model will be powered by a four-cylinder 104kW petrol engine, hard hitting torque will be available via 2.0-litre turbodiesels tuned to 97kW and 120kW. There is also an EcoFLEX version available which promises very low CO2 emissions. At the very top sits a V6 engine with 194kW. The new Insignia/Vectra will be on display for the first time at the London Motor Show in late July. Should Holden bring back the Vectra? Would it succeed against Ford’s gorgeous Mondeo?

Fancy frock for Gallardo from Premier4509

Is there such thing as the poor man’s Lamborghini? Current owners of the now discontinued Gallardo need not feel inadequate, with VeilSide subsidiary Premier4509 unveiling a deceptively familiar aero kit.

The Japanese tuning house has developed a new front bumper, side skirts, rear bumper and rear spoiler for the outgoing Lambo.

Murcielago-1Bentley Continental GT-2But it’s not all just for show, the kit improves the aerodynamics of the Gallardo and directs air flow over the engine and brakes more efficiently.

The custom panels are made from a combination of carbon-fibre and FRP, which are actually too small for panels such as the rear diffuser in raw form.

Premier4509 actually employ a technician whose sole task is to line up the individual weave of separate pieces of carbon-fibre to ensure a flawless finish.

In the past, the tuning house has also produced a widebody kit for the Bentley Continental GT and a similar rendition of the Gallardo kit for the Murcielago.

Ford Fiesta S unveiled in China

The reveal in Europe in March of the three-door and five-door Fiesta hatch and now the China reveal of the five-door Fiesta hot hatch confirm that all-new Ford Fiesta will bring the most appealing elements of Verve Concept to production reality.

Ford Fiesta S -1Ford Fiesta S -2The new Fiesta range is due to hit showrooms in Europe and Asia by as early as 2008, but Australia may have to wait until as late as 2010 where it may be manufactured locally alongside the Focus. The all-new Ford Fiesta makes extensive use of ultra high-strength steels in its body structure and every component has been scrutinized by European engineers for weight.

A light and agile package, it also retains the MacPherson strut front suspension and twist-beam rear suspension layout that has been one of its traditional strengths.

Electric-Power Assist Steering (E-PAS) is introduced in the Fiesta for the first time providing the right balance of low-speed assistance and excellent feel and responsiveness.

Finished in Passion Orange, the Fiesta S reflects the design direction which could form the new Fiesta ST and potentially a range-topping RS model - as well as the hotly anticipated Focus RS.

A throw back to its performance roots, perhaps the most prominent feature of the Fiesta S is its Escort Cosworth RS inspired rear wing design - a design element almost certain to feature on the Focus RS rumoured to make its debut sometime later this year.

Chevrolet Malibu a Go, Despite Axle Strike

Nothing worse than losing your momentum, and that’s been a big worry for the folks at General Motors, as they watch the strike at American Axle approach the end of its second month.

The strike has already had a sill-over impact, notably for GM, Axle’s biggest customer. It has so far had to shutter all or part of 30 of its own factories, and there was growing concern that the automaker might be forced to halt production of its new and well-received 2008 Chevrolet Malibu sedan.

Chevrolet Malibu -1But while it looks like another strong GM product, the Chevrolet HHR, has also been hit by the American Axle dispute, the automaker will be able to keep Malibu up-and-running. “I don’t see anything changing, from where I sit,” said Bo Andersson, GM’s global head of purchasing, during a roundtable discussion. “We have a good plan,” Andersson hinted, to keep parts coming for the Chevy Malibu, which was voted North American Car of the Year, last January, and which has been one of GM’s strongest entries in the passenger car segment in recent years.

BMW M3 coupe by HAMANN

HAMANN has just released a tuning package for the V8-powered BMW M3 Coupe E92 that incorporates a series of mechanical and cosmetic upgrades. While the majority of us would be happy with a standard M3, HAMANN wasn't satisfied with a stock version, they offered two upgrades. The first tuning package increases the 4.0-liter V8’s output to 435 Hp and delivers an additional 25 Nm of torque (series: 400 Nm) on the crank shaft. With the removal of the speed limiter, the M3 can go up to a top speed of 300 km/h or 187 mph. The second kit called Sportkit HM/M +35 rises output to 455 Hp and toque to 448 Nm. In this case, the M3’s speedometer doesn’t stop until it reaches 320 km/h or 199 mph.

BMW M3 coupe -1BMW M3 coupe -2They upgrade the already perfect suspension and brakes. The car looks amazing until you see the spoiler, for me the spoiler kills it. I was so happy when I saw the car especially since I love black on black, with black rims but that spoiler is too much, but if I took the spoiler out this what be the nicest M3. Personally, I'd also limo tint and black out tail lights maybe, but awesome job HAMANN.

2011 Chevy Volt - spied

Chevy Volt passed from the vaporware stage into the physical manifestation of GM's efforts to bring the series hybrid to production as promised. Though what you're looking at is the body of a last-gen Malibu, we have confirmation that underneath is the Volt's E-Flex powertrain being track-tested for the first time, or at least the first time in front of a spy photographer's zoom lens. Of course, there are still a lot of questions surrounding the Volt, like whether or not GM will meet its self-imposed deadline of late 2010 for production, or if the price will continue to rise above the estimated $35,000 we've heard thrown around.

2011 Chevy Volt-1What we do know is that the E-Flex powertrain will be paired with the next-generation Delta chassis. Two suppliers, Continental Automotive Systems and A123 Systems, are tasked with developing the Volt's all-important lithium-ion battery pack that has to achieve the difficult mark of allowing the Volt to operate for 40 miles on electric power alone. There's still a lot of work to do and not a lot of time left to do it, so it's good seeing GM finally driving the Volt around.

2010 Porsche Panamera Spied In Vegas

Porsche engineers were out in full gear, with a parade of at least 5 prototypes, giving photographers more chances to take pictures of the Panamera. The entry-level powerplant will be Volkswagen's 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine with 300 bhp, while Porsche's own drivetrain will be a direct-injection eight-cylinder petrol engine, available in naturally-aspirated guise (350 bhp) and with twin-turbo (560 bhp).

2010 Porsche Panamera-12010 Porsche Panamera-2In addition – we’re also expecting the Panamera S version. The interior — although apparently still in its prototype stage — is highlighted by a center-mounted LCD screen and a typical Porsche gauge cluster. The exteriors seem to vary for instance some have exhausts similar to the Porsche Boxter, while some have quad-exhausts-seems the quad exhaust is for the turbo version. The Panamera is scheduled for an official presentation at the 2009 Geneva show. As of now, I personally don't like the car all that much, but in the end it should be good…hey it's a Porche.

2009 Audi Q5 Spy Photos

Built at the Ingolstadt factory in Germany, the Q5 will be Audi’s answer to the BMW’s X3 and Mercedes’ upcoming GLK. With production scheduled to start later this year, our European photographers caught this Q5 with little disguising undergoing final tests on the roads around the German Nürburgring.

2009 Audi Q5 -12009 Audi Q5 -22009 Audi Q5 -3According to Audi, 300 million Euros (AUD $500 million) have been invested in the project, with around 1700 employees involved. The Q5 is based on the same new platform as the A5 and the brand-new A4, making it possible for Audi to offer a full range of engines from the FSI-equipped four- and six-cylinder engines to diesel models. For those wanting a little more, there is already talk of an S5 variant, powered by Audi’s 4.2-litre V8.

All Q5 variants are expected to receive an updated version of the Quattro all-wheel-drive system and be driven via either a six-speed manual or the new seven-speed DSG gearbox. Additional features include hill-descent control and an adjustable air suspension.

2008 Abt Audi R8

(from Abt Press Release) Design milestones of sports car construction do not only come from Sant' Agata Bolognese or Maranello but also from Kempten. Because there Abt Sportsline, the greatest tuner for vehicles from the Volkswagen group, is based. With the new Abt R8, the term "improvement" is set one level higher as this car combines technical competence and brilliant design from Abt and results in an automobile masterwork. Not more and not less. The Abt R8 is a fantastic super sports car, playing in the same league as Lamborghini Gallardo or Ferrari F430.

2008 Abt Audi R8-12008 Abt Audi R8-2No doubt, even the basis model of the R8 is something special - and therefore a real challenge, emphasizes Hans-Jorgen Abt. "The fluently dynamic form of the car is unique, it looks like having a lot of power, even when standing still," admits the managing director and therewith he raises the bar for his engineers and designers. As it is usual for Abt, the result is quite respectable and can be driven with fascination. The light and sporty high-tech material Carbon well visibly shapes the rear skirt, the side blades and the side skirts. The exciting body kit of the two-seater was developed by the motor sports professionals from Kempten who also optimized the car in reducing weight and in distributing mass evenly. That optical features do not obviate technical sophistications but, on the contrary, lead to perfection clearly show the contours of the Abt R8. Front skirt, side skirts, and rear skirt form a unit in which the rear wing, the side blades and also the exhaust system are harmonically integrated.

A special highlight is the front skirt partially made of sight carbon. It is a component of the equipment version "Extravagant". The customer is able to provide his Abt R8 with attachment parts, at his own option with elements of sight carbon. A two tone structure is also possible by request. Another alternative ist the equipment version “Exclusive”, which offers the customer the possibility to beautify his R8 with an Abt body kit made of high-quality GRP (glass fibre reinforced plastic). Also the new BR wheel from Abt with its bi-colour paint perfectly fits the car. The front axis presents it in the size 9x20 inch, the rear axis in 11x20 inch. Thus the R8 appears much more dynamical. With Abt suspension springs and car lowering the team from Kempten improves the road holding even more as Christian Abt and his specialists exactly adjusted the suspension.

The new Abt R8 is a car which makes hearts beat faster. It perfectly brings the magic of speed onto the road even when standing still.

2008 D3 Cadillac CTS

(from D3 Press Release) 2008 Cadillac CTSD3 Performance Exterior Package
D3 Cadillac, the leader in Cadillac tuning, introduces the new 2008 Cadillac CTS Performance Exterior Package. The exterior enhancements are not only exquisitely designed styling cues integrated seamlessly, they are functional as well. The front grill has a unique jewel like cut on the stainless steel wire mesh that signifies performance & class. The additional openings in the front allow for a larger surface area to induce adequate cooling for the engine compartment. This is important when you start squeezing more performance out of this engine, as heat is a byproduct of making more power.

Cadillac CTS-1Cadillac CTS-2Not only were the factory brake ducts maintained, but the front fascia also introduces double the cooling by adding an additional brake duct pick ups on each side. Notice the angled lip towards the lower edge of the front fascia. This angled edge has been designed and measured for just the right amount of down force without creating too much drag. The side skirts offer a much more complete look and help transfer the styling from the front of the vehicle to the rear without loosing the theme of the design.

The rear deck lid spoiler and rear roof spoiler help introduce down force at high speed while keeping the air stable coming off the backside of the vehicle. The rear lower diffuser helps keep the air uniform while passing the underside of the vehicle. While at speed the air is kept moving uniform rather than curling up behind the vehicle, often promoting rear end lift at high speeds.

Lotus ‘Eagle’ Spied

Under the watchful eyes of Malaysian backers, Lotus has been undergoing a period of management stability allowing the company to reach its best. Recent rumours that the Malaysian-British joint-venture is gearing up to release another model seem to be true.

Snapped while undergoing handling testing in southern France, this picture show what we currently know as the Lotus “Eagle”.

Lotus ‘Eagle’Larger and more powerful than the Elise, the ‘Eagle’ will be powered by a mid-mounted 3.5-litre petrol engine borrowed from Toyota and driven via the rear wheels.

Little else is currently known about the engine, but we are keen to find out if it’s the same 200kW unit found in Toyota’s Aurion, RAV4 V6, Kluger, Tarago etc…

The mass-produced engine will ensure that the ‘Eagle’ will pass strict EU and US emission regulations.

The Lotus Eagle is rumoured to be heading for the British motor show in July this year.

2008 Abt Audi AS5

(from Abt Press Release) Unobtrusive design and powerful appearance - this is what the Abt AS5 stands for. With a discerning eye on the detail Abt enhances the elegant Audi Coupe with its breathtaking, pleasing contours and the stretched flanks. The team from Kempten has managed to upgrade the unique vehicle without changing its character. With the two coloured paint and the Abt body kit, the AS5 appears like a mannequin in an extravagant designer tailor-made suit. The front skirt, in which a grid element accents the front fog lights and the single-frame grill, the strikingly curved lateral parts, the fender insets and the gill-shaped air inlets form a shapely unit.

2008 Abt Audi AS5-12008 Abt Audi AS5-2The Coupe is a unique and beautiful car, no matter from which perspective. The rear skirt inset with the diffuser excellently harmonizes with the 4-pipe rear muffler, together with the perfectly designed rear spoiler it accentuates the rear of the vehicle. As ideal complement, Abt recommends the new BR wheel in 20 inch. With its superposed spokes, the wheel seems to rapidly move forward although it is standing still.

The Abt AS5 is not only optically a real sports car. In Essen it is presented with the powerful 3.0 TDI engine which, thanks to Abt Power S, now brings 300 HP (221 KW) onto the road instead of the serial 240 HP (176 KW). The torque of 600 Nm is getting free at already 2400 rpm and provide for shear force in all situations. Also impressive is the acceleration of the self-igniting engine.

Exactly 5.3 seconds needs the car from standing still to 100 km/h, the top speed is 264 km/h - values which suit to a sporty Coupe like the Abt AS5. In order that the impressive power remains controllable, Christian Abt, motor sport professional, excellently adjusted the Abt thread sports suspension in detail. And the Abt brake system with discs 380 millimeters diameter powerfully grips.Abt multifunctional sports steering wheel, soft nappa leather grip and carbon look leather adorn the driver's workplace. Abt aluminium pedals and gear shift knob complete the sporty accent in the interior. A successful masterpiece can be seen at the ESSEN MOTOR SHOW, the Abt AS5. The only downside is: It wants to be driven and this, unfortunately, is impossible in the exhibition hall.

Lexus LF-A - Spy Shots

Lexus LF-A is one of those cars that seems like it will never get to market. We've gone through two different LF-A concepts already, plus an LF-A Roadster, and the high-performance luxury sport coupe isn't even on sale yet. Spy photographers from KGP have caught another new version of the LF-A near the famed Nurburgring in Germany, this one apparently decked out in full racing regalia.

Lexus LF-A -1Lexus LF-A -2The most tell-tale sign that this is likely not a road-going version of the car is its giant, fixed rear wing in place of the retractable one seen on prior prototypes. It also has what appears to be carbon fiber canards on the outer edges of the front clip, which, last time we checked, aren't often found on road-legal automobiles. Our fine photographer friends suggest that Lexus might be aiming for success in motorsports with the upcoming LF-A, especially after seeing the fine performance of Nissan's new GT-R in competitive racing. After years of waiting and watching prototypes being tested, however, we're not holding our breath anymore.

Honda NSX to spearhead RWD model lineup

By most accounts, Honda originally planned to show off the next generation NSX to the seething throngs at last year's Tokyo Motor Show. But due to the less-than-positive reception the Advanced Sports Car concept garnered at the Detroit show, Honda's designers headed back to the drawing board to redesign the front clip housing the 550 hp, 4.5-liter V10.

Honda NSX -1Honda NSX -2Now, Autocar has gotten word from a Honda insider that the NSX is bound for the 2009 Tokyo show, sporting a new front end that "has Chevrolet Corvette undertones" and is slated to for production in the fall of 2010.

The new NSX will supposedly kick off Honda's first serious attempt at producing rear-wheel-drive vehicles to rival BMW, Mercedes, Lexus and Infiniti, including new platforms that will underpin Acura's larger sedan offerings and an S2000-based Acura sports car that takes aim at the Mercedes SLK. The launch of Acura's 7-series fighter isn't due to make an appearance until 2015. For Honda' sake, let's hope they can expedite development to make it happen around the turn of the decade.

2009 Chevrolet Traverse Preview

Chevrolet will join the trio of big GM crossovers with a fourth family vehicle, the Traverse.

On display at the Chicago auto show, the Traverse is based on the same mechanicals as the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, and Saturn Outlook. Chevrolet says it's targeting the likes of the Ford Edge, Toyota Highlander, and Honda Pilot with the new seven- or eight-passenger Traverse.

2009 Chevrolet Traverse -12009 Chevrolet Traverse -2The Traverse, which goes on sale in the fall as a 2009 model, shares some of the styling themes applied to the award-winning 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, GM says in a release. It's a distinct look with more crisp lines than either the Enclave or Outlook; details like the tailgate spoiler and a chromed grille surround give it a personality separate from the other big GM triplets. The Traverse's dual-cockpit design and large gauges tie it with other recent Chevrolet efforts.

The Traverse will be offered in three trim levels: LS, LT, and LTZ. Each trim will be available in front- or all-wheel drive. A range of 17-, 18-, and 20-inch wheels will be offered, as will interior features like XM, OnStar, a rear-seat entertainment system, a panoramic sunroof, and Bluetooth.

The standard engine is GM's 3.6-liter V-6 with 281 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic is the sole transmission. Standard safety features include six airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction and stability control.

Other options will include a rearview camera, rear parking assist, a power liftgate; a DVD entertainment system; a navigation system; heated mirrors; and remote start.

The Traverse will be built at the former Saturn plant in Spring Hill, Tenn.

Lamborghini Murcielago SV - Spy Sots

We alerted you last week to the existence of the Lamborghini Murcielago SV, a rear-wheel-drive version of the normally all-wheel-drive LP640. Seen here undergoing some on-track testing, the SV will reportedly serve up some 680 horsepower from its Lambo V12 behind the seats. It will also be lighter than a normal Murcielago by 220 pounds. Clearly visible on the car is a new fixed rear wing that's either meant to assist in take offs or stabilize the car at high-speeds. Expect carbon fiber to be a common build material, as well. Those are all some potent variables for a formula that guarantees a fun time.

Lamborghini Murcielago SV -1Lamborghini Murcielago SV -2The Murcielago SV will be the latest in a string of new models from Lamborghini lately including the LP640, Reventon, Gallardo LP560-4, Gallardo Superleggera, among others. 2008 BMW M3 Review

Since its inception back in the late 1980s, the BMW M3 has been thrilling driving enthusiasts. Throughout the years, the M3's ripping power plants, finely balanced chassis, telepathic steering and daily-driver usability have made this special version of the 3 Series a car to covet.

After the rather limited-production first-generation M3 that sported a pumped-up four-cylinder engine, subsequent iterations employed high-output inline-6s, with the last version making 333 horsepower. But with current countryman rivals sporting V8s, it's not much of a surprise to discover that the new-for-2008 BMW M3 has graduated to V8 power. It's also no news flash that the latest M3 has gotten a bit larger and heavier during its move to the latest 3 Series chassis. But has this "bigger, stronger, faster" design dictum at all hurt the balance and purity of the M3?

2008 BMW M3-12008 BMW M3-2The answer's a bit muddled. Of course, the sound and fury of that 414-hp V8 is a big part of the newest M3's engaging personality, and nobody is going to complain about the car's 12.7-second quarter-mile time. And the 2008 M3 still does itself proud when it's time to turn the wheel, as it'll run through a set of twisties like a border collie through the weave poles at a dog agility competition. But drive the new M3 back to back against the previous version and you'll notice something has gone amiss in regard to the level of communication between the driver and the road surface. The car's steering is quick and laser-beam precise, but it lacks the intuitive feel for which older M3s are so well known

Apart from that one minor criticism, the 2008 BMW M3 is hard to fault if you truly enjoy driving -- it goes, stops and steers like a sports car while delivering a respectable measure of functionality, especially if you choose the sedan version. Of course, the same could also be said of the M3's stout competitors, namely Audi's S5 coupe and RS4 sedan and Mercedes-Benz's C63 sedan. Until we perform a comparison test, we're reluctant to pick a winner. Suffice it to say that choosing one is a task as enviable as having to pick something from the dessert menu at the Cheesecake Factory, and we can't imagine anyone's automotive sweet tooth not being satisfied by any of them.

2008 Porsche Cayman Review

When Porsche introduced the Cayman S two years ago, it left some enthusiasts scratching their heads. The bold, midengine sports car was faster than its ragtop counterpart, the Boxster, but lacked the performance of the famed 911. In all likelihood, Porsche could have made the Cayman faster, but it didn't want to cannibalize the market for its race-bred -- and more expensive -- models. The resulting Cayman was precisely tuned to fit in the gap between Porsche's entry level and flagship models.

2008 Porsche Cayman -12008 Porsche Cayman -2There are two versions of the Cayman now, the base model and the S. The regular Cayman has a 2.7-liter flat-6 that puts out a respectable 245 horsepower and 201 pound-feet of torque, while the 3.4-liter in the Cayman S delivers 295 hp and 251 lb-ft of torque. Despite being powered by 50 fewer horses than its S sibling, Porsche claims the base sport coupe's 0-60 time lags only by 0.7 second with manual models. Although the Cayman S comes with bigger brakes, upgraded wheels and a six-speed manual transmission, the base Cayman, which starts nearly $10,000 less than the S version, is still a fantastic drive.

The combination of the Cayman's agile, midengine platform with a stiff body makes for a superbly handling sport coupe. It's more responsive than the Boxster, yet it's more manageable than a 911. What's more, the relatively roomy cargo areas -- both front and back -- make this car almost practical enough to fit into the "daily driver" category.

Options on the Cayman can add up quickly, which throws the notion of good price-to-performance ratio out the (electronically controlled) window. Just going by the numbers, other cars such as the BMW Z4 coupe, Chevrolet Corvette and Nissan 350Z can churn out better performance for less cash. Ditto the superb new BMW 135i, which adds a backseat to the mix. But for the driving enthusiast who prioritizes perfectly balanced responsive handling, the 2008 Porsche Cayman is hard to beat.

Optional upgrade sequential gearbox & launch control

2008 Caterham Seven Superlight R500-12008 Caterham Seven Superlight R500-2For those really serious about their driving, the famous supercar-slaying R500 moniker is back with the arrival of the all-new Caterham Seven Superlight R500.

The latest model from the British sportscar manufacturer takes the minimalist, lightweight Seven philosophy to a new level with more power, sharper handling and for those venturing on track the option of launch control and the Caterham Motorsport engineered sequential gearbox.

Weighing just 506kg and producing 263bhp, R500 is the most potent race-tuned production Seven yet.

The Series 3 chassis flagship model blasts out 520bhp-per-tonne and is capable of propelling itself from 0-60mph in 2.88 seconds, delivering a pure adrenalin fix for those committed enough to strap themselves into the Kevlar race seats.

Performance upgrades for the R500 aimed squarely at the track day market include a sequential transmission, launch control, a gulping Carbon Induction Airbox and Eibach Springs and dampers derived from the Caterham C400 race series.

The R500 isn’t just about big performance statistics though; refinements and Seven firsts feature throughout and help distinguish it from its stablemates.

On sale immediately, the factory built Superlight R500 starts at Ј36,995.

Bugatti Veyron Targa

When you build the world’s ultimate car, where do you go from there? Topless of course. Bugatti has today confirmed the company is working on a so-called “targa” version of its Veyron supercar, which should be available next year.

The new Veyron will be available with a removable hardtop “because there was no other solution which could fit with its safety cage,” a former Bugatti executive told AutoNews.

Bugatti Veyron TargaThe roof won’t be automatic either, it will either on or off as there is no storage space left in the car.

Little else is known about the Veyron convertible, logic would dictate that it will be priced above the standard model but may possibly be slightly slower to 100km, it will also not reach its top speed of 407km/h with the roof off.

Although Bugatti had originally promised to build only 300 Veyrons, it’s unknown if these Targa versions will count towards the total figure. CarAdvice is also aware of other variants currently in the works.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 Black Series

The most powerful Mercedes-Benz SL roadster ever goes on sale next year — and this morning Motor Trend spilled their guts on the details of the new 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 Black Series.

The Black Series takes the AMG V-8 engine and twists it until it screams — upping horsepower by 66 to a total of 670 hp, MT reports, and torque to 738 lb-ft. Though it’s capable of 220 mph, Benz will limit top speed to 186 mph. The buff book estimates the SL65 Black Series can rocket to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 Black Series-1A five-speed automatic is the sole gearbox, and the Black Series gets a fixed roof, along with flared fenders made of carbon fiber. The electronic suspension in the standard SL range is dumped in favor of an adjustable coil spring suspension, and 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels are fitted. Overall the Black Series loses 570 pounds versus the stock SL-Class, but still pushes 4080 pounds.

Expect a sticker price well over $200,000 this fall — and a relatively brief window of opportunity, as Mercedes only plans to build 350 copies total for worldwide consumption.

Mazda6 Coupe and Cabriolet

Mazda is planning to heat up its Mazda6 range following the poor performance of the sedan and wagon variants in Japan.

This will include the addition of two new models - a Coupe and Coupe Cabriolet, as well as a high performance model which will take the Mazdaspeed Atenza namesake.

Mazda6 Coupe-1Mazda6-2The new models will be based on the sedan chassis, with the BMW 3-series squarely in its sights as a benchmark for both build quality and choice.

Comprising a sedan, wagon, cabriolet, coupe and high performance model, the new and improved Mazda6 range will mimic that of the BMW 3-series.

This contradicts earlier reports that the Mazdaspeed6 - or Mazda6 MPS as it is known in Australia - would not be continued into the next generation.

Mazda are also planning a high performance derivative of the highly successful Mazda2, which could possibly resemble the Mazdaspeed Demio concept revealed at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

2008 Scion RSR tC

(from Toyota Press Release) Scion announced it will drift the RS*R Scion tC in Formula Drift events this year.

Scion's drift car is based on its most popular model, the tC sports coupe. The factory built front-wheel drive tC turned into a drifting contender through a rear-wheel drive conversion performed by acclaimed exhaust and suspension manufacturer, RSR. The tC shares its platform with Toyota's Japanese market Avensis four-wheel drive and Caldina all-wheel drive, enabling it to undergo the conversion. RS*R used its extensive performance shop experience to change the tC's stock transverse engine configuration to a longitudinal setup in order to drive power, through the transmission and drive shaft, directly to the rear wheels.

2008 Scion RSR tC-12008 Scion RSR tC-22008 Scion RSR tC-3The RSR Scion tC features a 3SGE Beams motor, HKS GT3037 turbo and intercooler, Blitz Dual SBC boost controller, and AEM EMS engine management system that outputs more than 400 horsepower, compared to the stock 161 horsepower. A G-Force five-speed sequential transmission, Tilton triple carbon clutch, Project Mu brakes, RS-R coilovers, Sparco Corsa seats and a custom concept wide body kit also make this vehicle unique. This tC will gracefully maneuver the track with Enkei RPF1 wheels and Toyo Proxes® R1R™ tires.

Ken Gushi will be at the wheel of the RS*R Scion tC. Gushi learned to drift at the age of 13 when his father took him to El Mirage Off-Highway Vehicle Area in California. Gushi started his drifting career at the age of 16 and was the youngest driver to compete in D1. Now 21 years old, Gushi has further developed his skills and placed in many drift events.

In addition to RS*R and Scion sponsors include Toyo Tires, XM Radio, Rogue Status, BASF, Mobil 1, Sparco, Enkei, AEM, Proceed and Meguiar’s.

The RS*R Scion tC will make its first appearance at Formula Drift’s Round 1, Streets of Long Beach in Calif. on April 12. Gushi and the RS*R tC will also compete in subsequent Formula Drift events including Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga. on May 10, Wall Speedway in Wall, N.J. on June 14, Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nev. 2008 Dodge Nitro SXT CRD review

Upon first glance it could be mistaken for a piece of military equipment capable of running over small houses. On second glance though, rubber tyres and a chrome grille slot it into the category of SUV.

There is literally a large step to get to the driver’s seat, where a commanding position is then taken. The bonnet seems like it goes on forever, making the front corners of the bonnet easy to see. The driver’s seat is comfortable and offers a relaxing position for long drives.

2008 Dodge Nitro SXT CRD -1The interior – much like most American cars – is seemingly made entirely of plastic. I couldn’t believe the degree of plastics used in the Dodge Caliber I drove last year. Although the Nitro has a lot of plastic in use too, it’s not as bad as the Caliber, but on the same token, is not at a level I would call acceptable for a ~$40,000 car.

We test drove the Nitro SXT CRD, under the bonnet a Mercedes-Benz sourced diesel motor and gearbox powers the Nitro. Nail the throttle and after a short stint of turbo lag, a torrent of torque hits, propelling the military vehicle lookalike with pace. The diesel motor produces 130kW and a massive 460Nm of torque, sipping through just 9.4l/100km, not bad for such a big car. Power is sent through a 5-speed automatic gearbox.

Although the acceleration on tap is plenty, the Nitro doesn’t handle – at all. Throw the Nitro around a bit and a feeling of insecurity is instantly felt. Body roll, a lack of steering response and spongy brakes culminate to a less than pleasing driving experience. Although the body roll is acceptable for an SUV, it doesn’t make the Nitro a car that can be used in all situations, which is the purpose of an SUV.

Priced from $36,990, the Nitro is available in both petrol and diesel models, the latter of which is more expensive. The range includes the SX and SXT. The SXT CRD being test driven is available from $43,490. Safety features include: ESP (Electronic Stability Control) with ABS; tyre pressure monitoring; driver and passenger airbags and side airbags with roll sensing technology.

Skoda’s Superb Estate revealed

Czech giant Skoda is set to join the space race with an eagerly anticipated estate based on the huge Superb. Our exclusive image is the best indication yet of how the new car will look when it’s officially unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October. Crucially, it’s the first time that Skoda has offered its flagship Superb line-up with a load-lugger.

Skoda’s Superb Estate -1Skoda’s Superb Estate -2And our spies caught engineers testing a blue proto-type, which uses the Octavia bodywork to disguise its longer platform and higher roofline. This is the first proof the firm is working on a rival to the Volvo V70.

Inside, the Superb Estate will offer even more load space than the hatch, which has an innovative ‘double opening’ tailgate, as revealed in Issue 1,003. As a result, the newcomer should be one of the class’s largest carriers.

It will be virtually the same length as the standard Superb, measuring around 4,850mm. But because it’s taller and benefits from a revised rear bench, the estate promises far greater load-lugging ability. Drivers will have the choice of six VW-sourced engines: three petrols and three diesels.

Entry-level models get the 105bhp 1.9 TDI oil-burner, while the flagship will take power from a 3.2-litre V6 delivering 260bhp. Five and six-speed gearboxes will be available, although bosses have also hinted that a slick-shifting, six-speed semi-automatic – based on Skoda parent company VW’s DSG transmission – will also be offered shortly after the car is launched.

Speculation has been rife that the marque will introduce a four-wheel-drive version of the latest-generation model, but Skoda has not yet provided official confirmation of this. The Superb Estate is due to go on sale in UK showrooms early next year, and buyers can expect to pay a premium of around £1,500 over the hatchback. That would see the entry-level Classic version start from about £15,500.

2010 Saab 9-4X Spied, Under All Those Bras

These are the first true pictures of the 2010 Saab 9-4X crossover vehicle, just captured by our spy photographers undergoing track testing.

We first saw this body style at the Detroit Auto Show, being touted at as the 9-4X BioPower Concept, but Saab is obviously serious about bringing this to the marketplace in a timely fashion.

2010 Saab 9-4X -12010 Saab 9-4X -2Codenamed GMT168, the Saab 9-4X will arrive in time for the 2010 model year. Sharing the platform with the upcoming Cadillac BRX, the Saab 9-4X will be built in at the Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico. And unlike the larger 9-7X sport-utility vehicle, this will be sold globally.

Styling – as you can easily see underneath quite a lot of automotive lingerie — will be very close to that of the concept, and powerplants will include a range of gasoline, as well as a new 250-horsepower diesel. The 9-4X will also offer Saab’s XWD all-wheel-drive system.

2008 Renault Scenic Expression Review

Take a family vacation to Europe and you’re pretty much guaranteed one thing - the car rental company will hand you the keys to a Scenic - it’s one of those unwritten rules.

Scenics are prevalent through out the EU, as popular as that blonde from high school with the big, umm… personality, but why is it so? Well it’s because the Europeans have caught on to an idea we seem to have lost in the 80s which is that a convenient and practical family vehicle doesn’t necessarily have to equal owning a cumbersome SUV.

2008 Renault Scenic Expression-12008 Renault Scenic Expression-22008 Renault Scenic Expression-3There’s good reason for this. European registration, insurance and fuel costs are frightening in comparison to ours, and space (especially for parking) is a lot more limited, so getting the most from your family car isn’t all about keeping up appearances. It’s about being sensible, practical and responsible in terms of your budget. This is where the Scenic excels.

The dCi (diesel) variant is new to the Scenic line-up and whilst visually it may strike a love-hate relationship with your mates, one of those you like it or you don’t type of deals, in all it’s a pretty neat package encompassing some great ingenuity and clever Ikea-esque thinking.

It’s a smooth and rather quiet ride, the seating is comfortable and furthermore it can be rearranged in seemingly endless combinations to suit just about any formation you should require. Both front and rear seats slide fore and aft, and the outboard rear seats can also slide slightly inboard (with the centre seat removed) to make things a little more roomy if you’re only carrying four passengers.

Although you’re not likely to win any races, the Scenic’s performance is quite adequate for its intended role and is a capable cruiser with the fuel economy of a small hatch back. ADR tests claim 7.1L / 100km (combined average) though my week with the Scenic saw slightly heavier usage at 8.0L.

When all is said and done the Scenic is a terrific, versatile and immensely practical car let down by some dated mechanicals. If the steering was a little sharper and the auto box could better manage the engine down low (and was a little more flexible on the hop) the Scenic dCi would be an ideal family car, but until the drive matches the brilliant interior I would have to recommend sticking with the petrol.

2008 Ford BF Falcon Wagon MkIII

While the new FG Falcon Sedan range is currently taking all the limelight, Ford Australia has decided to bring out a slightly updated Falcon wagon, still based on the BF platform. The new wagon gets a new model name, features and additional safety equipment.

The most important addition will be standard Dynamic Stability Control on the petrol model. There is also ‘Warm Charcoal’ carpet in lieu of Medium Stone and an all-new key fob with integrated flip ignition key.

2008 Ford BF Falcon Wagon MkIII“The current Falcon wagon remains an ideal tool of trade vehicle for a broad spectrum of fleet and private buyers alike, who appreciate its large load area and excellent payload capacity, the introduction of Dynamic Stability Control, in particular, will see the Falcon wagon continue to fill an important niche in the business sector, coupled with competitive running costs, sharp pricing and the ability to carry large loads.” Ford Australia Vice President Marketing and Sales, Mark Winslow said.

Additionally the new XT Falcon wagon receives ‘Satin Alloy’ accents on the front grille surround, Goodyear Eagle Excellence tyres (same as the ones used on the all-new FG Falcon range) plus a new ‘MkIII’ badge.

The 2008 Falcon wagon will only be available in XT specifications and is powered by either the standard 4.0-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol engine or the optional E-Gas dedicated LPG engine.

Unfortunately Ford is still offering the wagon with its ‘proven’ four-speed automatic transmission and not the five-speed available in the FG.

The new BF Falcon Wagon MkIII will go on sale in May, around the same time as the all-new FG Falcon sedan and Ute line-up arrives at Ford dealers.

Lotus Carlton

The Carlton was a sports sedan in the AMG Hammer vein in that it allowed four adults and a trunk full of luggage to cruise in sumptuous comfort at 170 mph on the autobahn--a rarity when the Carlton debuted in 1990. Unlike the Hammer, which evolved from a blue-blooded Mercedes-Benz, the Carlton started as a lowly General Motors family sedan--namely, the Vauxhall Carlton.

Lotus Carlton-1Lotus Carlton-2Despite the humble GM origins, anybody assuming the Carlton was a lightly-massaged civilian like the "Handling by Lotus" Isuzus would be tragically mistaken. the Carlton was and is a true world-class sports sedan. Smooth, muscular, and understated, the Lotus looked the part of a deadly serious super sedan. Under the skin, though, things got even more lethal.

Besides the inevitable handling tweaks, Lotus married the Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1's six-speed manual transmission with a twin-turbocharged 24-valve DOHC inline six pumping out 377 horsepower and 419 pound-feed of torque. That's stunning output today, and 18 years ago that was more than all but the top supercars could produce. The result was a comfortable sedan that still ranks as one of the fastest Loti ever made.

The Carlton could accelerate from 0-60 in 5 seconds flat and top out at 176 mph. It could accelerate to 60 and brake to a stop again in only 8.5 seconds--faster than most cars at the time could even finish their acceleration.

Just for perspective, take a moment and ponder the 2008 Audi S4 and 2008 BMW M3. They're fantastic cars, super sedans in every sense of the word, blending jaw-dropping power with a sophisticated chassis and no compromises and usability. But consider this--the 1990 Carlton could run stride for stride with both cars, just as it did with the Ferrari Testarossa, Lamborghini Countach, and Porsche 911 Turbo back in its day. Among its sports sedan peers, the Carlton's performance was unparalleled.

The Carlton was only offered across the pond, and even then in very limited quantities. It's a shame Americans never had a crack at it, but then again I suppose forbidden fruit tastes all the sweeter.

Geely is a Chinese Car You Might Actually Want to Drive

Chinese automakers are notorious for “borrowing” their designs from popular foreign car companies. I saw a dead ringer for a BMW X5. The only differences, as far as I could tell, could be seen in the logos. Fortunately, one Chinese car maker, Geely, has decided to go out on a limb an introduce a whole slough of new original designs. Of the 23 concepts that Geely will be previewing at the upcoming Beijing Motor Show (running April 20-28), some of them actually look halfway decent, like the NL SUV pictured above and the Geely GT pictured in the thumbs below.

GeelyIn its preview lineup at the Beijing show, Geely is expected to unveil the King Kong hatchback, the HE minivan, the GE SUV and the FC-1, FC-2 and FC-3 sedan lineup. Geely is also expected to unveil a number of new advanced powertrain technologies, including hybrid and fuel-cell models.

If you can get over the phonetic resemblance to the failed JLo/Ben Affleck flick, a Geely might make a decent addition to your garage once they hit the States.

2008 BMW 335i Coupe review

The 335i Coupe’s main draw card is the engine under the bonnet. BMW has reserved the V8 for the M3 and instead uses a twin-turbocharged inline 6-cylinder motor. The 3.0-litre motor produces 225kW and an impressive 400Nm of torque. Calling this engine a masterpiece would be a dreadful understatement. It’s not often you come across a motor which literally knows what to do before you even consider doing it.

2008 BMW 335i Coupe -12008 BMW 335i Coupe -2Ease on the throttle or slam down the throttle, the engine is always ready to respond, and the noise…oh the noise. At full flight, the twin-turbo’ed unit sounds like its ready to sacrifice anything in its path. It literally sounds like a fighter jet in the midst of mid-air combat. The noise can he heard quite clearly both inside and outside the cabin, lending to BMW’s commitment to driver satisfaction.

The 335i Coupe comes standard with a feature BMW call high-beam assist. The system is designed to automatically engage and disengage the high-beam lights without the need for driver input. The system can detect tail lights, along with oncoming headlights. The system worked relatively flawlessly during testing, but it seemed to get confused at times with reflective roadside signs and the red lights from parallel railway signals. It’s certainly a useful feature that takes the onus off the driver when it comes to dipping their lights.

BMW claims a 0-100km/h time of 5.5-seconds for the automatic 335i Coupe. After a couple of timed runs with the G-Tech, this figure was easily achieved. I believe the figure may be slightly understated, as it felt quicker than the stipulated time BMW has provided and this was backed up by the G-Tech’s readings of around 5.3-seconds.

The 3-series Coupe is available in three guises, the 323i, 325i and the most popular, the 335i. The 323i begins at $70,200, while the 325i can be had for $81,900. Finally, the 335i comes in at $108,900. A 6-speed ZF automatic gearbox can be optioned for an additional $2,800.

Aston Martin AM V10 Concept

Like most rendered ruminations, we know absolutely nothing about these digital drawings of a car named the Aston Martin AM V10, other than they were penned by someone who goes by Sabaman. They're not new either, having been uploaded onto the interwebs about a year ago. Nevertheless, they're very good and show off a vision for Aston Martin's future that's become all the more relevant since the brand's been sold by Ford.

Aston Martin AM V10 Concept-1Aston Martin AM V10 Concept-2Perhaps building ever faster versions of its current lineup won't cut the mustard someday soon, and Aston will begin considering a proper halo car. Such a low-slung, mid-engine exotic like this AM V10 concept could do the trick. It's swoopy with a familiar Aston Martin front face, but the rest of the body is pure sex. Again, we reiterate, these renderings are purely fantasy and nothing like this is being planned, but we wouldn't mind if it were.

Abt Volkswagen R32

It was only a matter of time before Abt got its hands on a Volkswagen R32. The hot hatch is no slouch in stock form with 250 horsepower, but Abt has boosted output to 370 bhp via a supercharger complete with a water-cooled intercooler. This knocks the 0-60 mph time down to 5.0 seconds flat and raises the top speed to 167 mph. Abt has also fitted the R32 with an adjustable sport suspension, as well as 19-inch BR wheels.

Volkswagen -1Volkswagen -2PRESS RELEASE:
The R32 is already designed as a super sports car. People who buy this Golf want an extremely fast compact car. A racing car in golf's clothing, suitable for every day use. ABT has put such an extraordinary car on dynamic 19-inch BR-wheels: instead of serial 250hp (184kW) the ABT R32 now delivers enormous 370hp (272kW). This immense plus in power of 120hp is possible thanks to a modified motor management and the use of the ABT compressor kit combined with a water-cooled intercooler.

All components are tuned perfectly to the potent V6 by the Kempten engineers, and therefore offer permanently impressing driving values: for example, the ABT R32 sprints from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.0 seconds, compared to 6.2 seconds for the serial R32. The top speed is more than 270km/h. Particularly impressing is how the tuned engine is getting it on: the six-cylinder engine accelerates just as smoothly as powerfully in every rpm-range. „The R32 is as much fun on the motor way as on winding country roads", explains Hans-Jürgen Abt. Small wonder, as the Kempten Golfer is equipped with the ABT adjustable sports suspension harmonizing perfectly with the 370 horses of the V6.

2008 AC Schnitzer BMW ACS6

(from AC Schnitzer Press Release) Crisper Proportions for Even More 6 Appeal
More aggressive, more attractive: With its latest facelift, BMW has made its successful 6-series coupe a little more dynamic. Everyone who thinks this measure does not go far enough will welcome the newly restyled aerodynamic components from AC Schnitzer. Like its predecessor, the new front skirt of the ACS6 mirrors the famous kidney design of the grille, but its proportions have been clearly sharpened by Head Designer Michele Viandante. In conjunction with the newstyle triangular fog lights from BMW, the car looks considerably more powerful.

BMW ACS6-1BMW ACS6-2This impression is reinforced at the restyled rear, where an AC Schnitzer rear spoiler enhances the new design of the tailgate with its dynamic "sharp creases“ and the integral brake light. The Aachen-based vehicle tuner has made the rear skirt slightly smoother than before, which in conjunction with the facelift rear lights make the vehicle appear not only more elegant but also more dynamic – an effect only enhanced by the AC Schnitzer sports rear silencer with chromed tailpipe. Made totally from stainless steel, this is not only an eyecatcher but also optimises engine response.

A touch of sophistication is given by the AC Schnitzer new side skirts which now also look flatter than before. In contrast, the power and torque curves of the uprated engines are anything but flat! This is especially true of the new diesel, which is available in the 6-series for the first time in the facelift model. AC Schnitzer has really turned up the power screw in the 635d in particular: instead of 210 kW/286 HP and 580 Nm, the ACS6 3.5d develops 228 kW/310 HP and 680 Nm.

For genuine petrol-heads, AC Schnitzer offers the 650i with the 5.1 l engine, which in technical
terms is almost a completely new engine. Its power rises from 270 kW (367 HP) to a superb
302 kW (411 HP). At the same time, driving performance improves: the top speed increases by
35 km/h. Trimmed with alloy wheels from the AC Schnitzer collection, the new 6-series coupй
cuts a fine figure even when stationary, especially with the breathtaking racing rims Type VI in
9.0J x 20" at the front and 10J x 20" at the rear.

BMW X6 starts at $53,275

MW's newest small ute, the X6 "sport activity coupe" will start at $53,275 when it arrives in showrooms this summer. That starting price is for the 3.0 liter six-cylinder model, called the xDrive 35i. It makes 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque.

BMW X6The twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 model, called the xDrive 50i, pumps out 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. It starts at $63,775. The twin-turbo engine is new for the X6.

The prices include destination charges. Both models have six-speed automatic transmissions.

Although BMW has dubbed the X6 a coupe, it has four doors and a hatch in the back. It has contoured side panels, a wide stance and a sloping C-pillar, giving it a coupelike silhouette.

The X6 is fitted with 19-inch alloy wheels and steering-wheel paddle shifters. The production version was unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January. BMW expects the United States to be the largest market for the vehicle.

The automaker also showed a hybrid version of the X6, which cuts fuel consumption by 20 percent and could arrive in 2009.

BMW Hydrogen 7 Fit for a prince

Getting eco friendly is something that's best left in advertisements and hoardings since most of the remedies to pollution are either too preposterous or simply make too much of an unnecessary purchase.

BMW Hydrogen 7 -1BMW Hydrogen 7 -2BMW Hydrogen 7 -3But no matter how underrated they concept of pollution-free options may be, I'll all ways vouch for vehicles that save both energy and also prevent pollution. Leading by example is His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco who has purchased a BMW Hydrogen. He is now inline with celebrities like Will Ferrell and Cameron Diaz. The prince picked this one up from an environmental exposition in Monte Carlo.

"I monitor very carefully, in the automobile sector in particular, the development of new technologies". Well those are the golden words that weigh a lit more than the Hydrogen 7.

1973 Oldsmobile Cutlass

I love slick sports coupes and sedans, and high-horsepower, high-testosterone muscle cars get my blood churning, so my fixation with seemingly mediocre 1970s American cars must seem a little strange. Sports coupes, sports sedans, and muscle cars all tend to combine style, power, and athleticism; in the popular eye, 1970s American cars bring only gauche style and flabby, anemic performance to the table.

Cutlass-1Cutlass-2Certainly, it was a dark time in the automotive world, with tightening emissions restrictions, an awful fuel shortage, plunging power levels, and an odd predilection towards baroque styling elements. But when people give me a hard time about my 1970s car infatuation, I point to cars like the 1973 Oldsmobile Cutlass as examples of why I find them so compelling.

I find the '73 Cutlass particularly good-looking, with its scalloped fenders and delicate detailing. It's a distinctive look without crossing the line to busy. The Cutlass was also a sweetheart of a car mechanically--not a hot rod, but a comfortable, stylish cruiser with an plush ride and a torquey 350 V-8.

In a way, the Cutlass is a proud representative of a sweet spot in American car history. In the same way that Kleenex knows how to make facial tissue, Detroit just knew how to build large, V-8-powered, rear-wheel-drive cruisers. That knowledge was hard-coded into the DNA of every major American car company. The major disasters came when the Big Three had to step outside of that comfort zone to try something new.

The '73 Cutlass was more reliable, better-executed, and more satisfying to drive than the jumbled messes that came immediately after it when Detroit fumbled with small engines and front-wheel-drive. The Cutlass was a particularly good example of how good a typical American rear-wheel-drive car was before GM lost the playbook.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Spied

Though it’s still over a year away from a world introduction, our spies have garnered details on the next Mercedes E‑Class, code-named W212 and due at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E-ClassThe next E-Class will ape the S-Class’s wheel-arch extensions, rising character line below the door handles, massive bumpers, and greenhouse. A more sculpted wide-frame grille, the more geometric nasal air intakes, and the wedge-shaped profile should give W212 a sportier stance. Actually, early styling models show a certain affinity for the most recent efforts from Lexus – such as the rectangular quad headlamps, the C-pillar treatment, and the taillights. This is, of course, ironic given that the Lexus LS is famous for copying Mercedes, but Stuttgart still has plenty of time to hone the shape.

Driver assistance in general is a major theme for W212. Expect lane-departure warnings, an eye-movement monitor, traffic-sign identification, road-condition sensors, and stability control that accounts for crosswinds, camber changes, and tire wear. However, Mercedes will abandon electronic braking in favor of conventional brakes, although they will boast features such as wet-weather disc wiping and wheel-selective cornering brake control, as well as the usual anti-lock control. Optional ceramic-composite discs could be introduced top-down, starting with the AMG models.

2008 Toyota RAV4

The third-generation RAV4 put the baby-ute concept into the mainstream when it made its debut for the 1996 model year. But increased size enhances usefulness, and like all babies, this one has grown.

Since that ’96 original, the five-door RAV4 has had its wheelbase stretched 9.8 inches, overall length has increased by more than a foot and a half (19.1 inches), width by 4.8 to 6.3 inches, and height by almost an inch. The RAV4 offers a third-row seat option, as well as an exceptionally robust V-6 engine option (269 horsepower, 246 pound-feet of torque) and, of course, a choice of front- or four-wheel drive.

2008 Toyota RAV4There are a couple minor demerits. That third row is suitable only for miniature humans, and opting for the V-6 without all-wheel drive means a torque-steer wrestling match for those who stab the throttle with too much zeal. Nevertheless, the RAV4 provides a wide range of choices and ample cargo space for this size class, plus good road manners and a higher-than-average fun-to-drive index, attractively wrapped and attractively priced. It’s a blend that’s hard to beat.

2008 Kleemann D-SCK Concept

The KLEEMANN GTK features carbon fibre body panels as well as many existing high performance KLEEMANN products, such as Kompressor system, alloy wheels, brakes and suspension. These products have been developed and tested since 2004 in a Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG; the GTK is structurally based on the SLK.

"When we chose to base the GTK on the Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG, we wanted to offer exclusive sportscar design with the built-in everyday reliability, safety and comfort of the Mercedes-Benz cars. That way we could focus on developing specific elements making the car's design and performance unique for KLEEMANN." says technical director Claus Ankjaer

2008 Kleemann D-SCK Concept-12008 Kleemann D-SCK Concept-2Featuring the normally aspirated SLK 55 AMG engine fitted with a complete KLEEMANN Kompressor system, the GTK boasts 540 HP of power and 700 Nm of torque. This power is transferred to the road through a 7-speed automatic gearbox, a KLEEMANN limited slip differential and ultra low profile Toyo T1-R tires on 20" KLEEMANN alloy rims designed specifically for the GTK, giving the driver maximum performance and control on the road. Being a safe, reliable and everyday usable sportscar reflects the Comfort Power slogan of KLEEMANN, and sets the GTK apart from many other race bred sportscars.

The raw performance data for the GTK places it at the very front of the competition. The 0-100 km/h acceleration is achieved in only 3.7 seconds and the GTK continues the brutal acceleration right up to the electronically limited top speed of 300 km/h. The high performance KLEEMANN brake system featuring 380 mm. vented discs with 8 piston fixed aluminium callipers front and 345 mm. vented discs with 4 piston fixed aluminium callipers rear ensure fast and secure stopping power from any speed.

2008 Chevrolet Tahoe LTZ 4×4 Review

The Tahoe is a happy, jumbo-sized appliance. Its massive prow encapsulates the truck's clean, modern design. Although endlessly, relentlesly generic, the big Chevy's sheetmetal is handsome enough from any angle– without getting within two counties of ostentatious (or unpredictable). The $2,365 White Diamond treatment adds pearlescent sparkle to the Tahoe's paint job; the chrome grillwork shines through like a gleaming chain mail vest.

2008 Chevrolet Tahoe LTZ -12008 Chevrolet Tahoe LTZ -2The Tahoe LTZ's cabin strikes the middle ground between Ford's sleek yet sumptuous King Ranch Edition leather cabin and Toyota's plasticized Hell. Okay, the Tahoe also puts its occupants in plasticized Hell. But the Chevy's dashboard is far less cluttered than ToMoCo's big rig, so the Tahoe seems significantly less cheap.

Speaking of not-so-divine retribution, adults condemned to the Tahoe's way back sit with their knees pressed into their chest and their feet wedged between the seats. Every time the Tahoe hits a bump, the seatbelt tensioner ratchets ever tighter, compressing the occupant's shoulder towards the short seatback. After twenty minutes in the third row, anyone who's not a pint-sized passenger will be calling Amnesty International.

In defense of the Tahoe's class-trailing interior packaging (or SUV packaging in general), try towing 8400 lbs. in a minivan. And while the Tahoe's heavy third row seats must be manhandled and removed to create a suitably cavernous load space, the four wheel-drive SUV can thusly carry a large, heavy load AND tow a boat AND retain plenty of off-road capability.

On combined surfaces– neglected highways, pock-marked local roads, gravel, dirt, wherever– the Tahoe LTZ' Autoride makes Chevy drivers feel the most serene of all full-size SUV pilots. The Tahoe's trick suspension system reacts to body and wheel sensor input, triggering bi-state (nothing kinky, just two positions) variable air-assisted shock dampening. It delivers an outstandingly smooth, even luxurious ride.

Combined with a stiff, fully-boxed frame and a multi-link coil spring rear-end, Autoride also helps makes the White Diamond Tahoe the best handling truck of the bunch. As one of our writers pointed out previously, that's a bit like saying it's the world most flame retardant paper hat. But if you're going to drive a full-size SUV on a daily basis, you want the beast to handle safely and predictably, and stop with confidence and poise. That the Tahoe does.

Nissan GT-R V-Spec spied

Despite its immense performance, the new Nissan GT-R tips the scales at nearly two-tonnes - it is without doubt the only Achilles heel of this unstoppable beast. However even before the GT-R has made it into showrooms around the world, Nissan has been busy developing its trademark V-Spec series. The formula is simple - less weight, more power.

Nissan GT-R V-Spec -1Nissan GT-R V-Spec -2Nissan GT-R V-Spec -3Best estimates at the moment rate the V-Spec edition with at least 410kW - up from 358kW in the standard GT-R.An equally substantial weight-loss is also anticipated, speculated to be at least 150kg lighter. In addition to a revised front splitter with integrated air intakes - presumably for the brakes, carbon fibre is expected to replace many of the major body panels to save weight.

The mismatched bonnet colour may also indicate a full carbon-fibre replacement. The golden Brembo calipers are a no-show on the V-Spec mule, instead revealing an enviable carbon-ceramic setup.

Already blitzing the competition around the now benchmark Nurburgring race track in Germany, Nissan’s objective for the V-Spec is a sub-7.25 minute lap time - 18 seconds faster than the current GT-R.

Spy Shots 2009 Honda Pilot

The 2009 Honda Pilot has been spied in production guise, and unlike the bulldog that inspired the front grille, it's less than lovable. With styling pulled directly from the Honda Pilot Prototype shown in Detroit, the new unibody 'ute from Honda should arrive later this year with ACE safety features, a V6 lump with cylinder deactivation and seating for eight passengers of varying size.

2009 Honda Pilot-12009 Honda Pilot-2The interior is an evolution of the outgoing model, with a massive center stack that's far more butch that the one it replaces, along with a new multifunction steering wheel similar to that found on the redesigned Accord. Overall, we're not entirely smitten with the slap sides and grotesque nose, but you can check the gallery below to make up your own mind.

Ford F150 Raptor - Spy Shots

As the days go on, the much rumored F-150 Raptor is becoming less wild speculation and more solid reality. Dealers were given a glimpse of the forth-coming truck at the Ford Dealer Show in Las Vegas, and they haven't shied away from spilling the beans regarding what they saw. Ford marketing boss Jim Farley unveiled the Ford-embossed front grille of the baja F-150, then showed video of a juiced-up off-road mule tearing it up in the desert.

Ford F150 Raptor -1Ford F150 Raptor-2Farley also revealed some details about the Raptor's new powerplant, which is believed to be the 6.2L "BOSS" V8. Power was quoted at 380 hp, but both PickupTruck.com and Four Wheeler believe Ford is sand-bagging on the engine's real power quotient, which they feel will be in the ballpark of 420 ponies. We're guessing 420 would be a much more appropriate number considering the size of the engine and rumors that the truck may be formally labeled as an SVT product. Dealers were also shown one of the Raptor's long-travel shocks, which was built by Fox Racing especially for the Raptor and has a full 12 inches of travel.

Ford is reportedly very excited about the Raptor, and execs allegedly went as far as saying that the Blue Oval was going to drive the truck "right up Toyota's ass." Ouch, we hope that's a metaphor. At this time there is no word as to when the Raptor will be available to customers, but since it's being shown to dealers, it likely isn't too far off.

Subaru suspends 2.5-litre turbo sales

Subaru’s once bullet-proof 2.5-litre boxer engine has hit its first issue with the Japanese company suspending the production and sale of all vehicles powered by the four-cylinder turbocharged engine.

The vehicles which were built between 8th of January and April 5th this year include the new Forester XT, Impreza WRX and WRX STi as well as the Liberty GT. Altogether 1233 vehicles could be effected.

Subaru 2.5-litre turboThankfully only 171 of the 1233 have been sold to customers and none have yet suffered any engine issues (such as engine knocking noise).

However in overseas markets several reports of “Engine Knocking Noise” have been reported and initial investigation has confirmed an internal wear issue on the failed units.

Details regarding Subaru vehicles affected by the issue:
Forester XT – chassis 002070 onwards
Liberty GT sedan – chassis 038385 onwards
Liberty GT wagon – chassis 068148 onwards
Impreza WRX and WRX STi – chassis 015006 onwards

Subaru has decided to issue a quality assurance action (instead of a recall) in order to avoid “possible damage to the engines of potentially affected vehicles”.

Mazda3 MPS to take on the Targa Tasmania

Mazda is heading Down Under to compete in the Targa Tasmania for its eighth campaign. The team, consisting of Rick Bates and Alister McRae, will be charging through the outback in one specially prepped Mazda3 MPS (or Mazdaspeed3 to those of us in NA). The 2WD Showroom Targa rules dictate that the vehicle has to remain somewhat stock, with the carpeting, power windows and audio equipment keeping things civil as the driving duo covers over 2,000 km during the six-day race.

Mazda3 MPS t-1Mazda3 MPS t-2Naturally, the Mazda is outfitted with the necessary safety equipment, including a PCD roll cage, racing seats, five-point harnesses and a fire extinguisher, but the performance modifications are kept to a minimum. The MPS is equipped with upgraded springs and struts, brake pads, a new steering wheel, navigation equipment, cat-back exhaust (cats are still fitted), some additional ducting to cool off the brakes and a revised ECU. The race begins on the 15th of April and you can follow the teams' progress at Mazda Australia's Targa site.

Chrysler 300C Touring SRT Design Diesel

A month ago, there can't have been many people saying, "Oh, my life is incomplete without a Bentley-resembling Chrysler, but you know I just can't quite bring myself to get one on account of the lack of soft-feel plastic on the armrests. Come to that, the position of the high-mounted stop-light is impossibly shabby."

Chrysler 300C Touring SRT Design Diesel-1Chrysler 300C Touring SRT Design Diesel-2And so there can't be many people who will rush out to buy one now those things have been fixed. If you were a 300C kinda guy before, you still will be now. If you weren't, this micro-facelift won't have made a whole lot of difference.

On the other hand, the jiggery-pokery to the range might change your situation. New prominence goes to the diesels. They're good. It's a Merc-derived V6 with 215bhp and a smooth-ish auto.

People have been buying the diesel in big numbers, unlike most of the petrol models, so they've been offed from the range. The only petrol 300C that remains is the entertainingly bonkers SRT/8. A V8, 425bhp and a set of 20s do it for me.

So Chrysler has combined the two in a new SRT-Design trim. It has the diesel engine but the looks, the ride-imperiling 20s and the sportified leather-and-carbon cabin of the SRT. And navigation, Bluetooth, iPod connector and integral 20Gb music drive.

I fancy the Touring version. It's rational: it's a diesel estate at a good price. But surely no one will buy it for rational reasons...

2009 Volkswagen Passat CC

Volkswagen has long since emerged from its standing as a no-frills straightforward automaker with a handful of products to offer a full range of vehicles, including hatchbacks, sedans of all sizes, wagons, vans, convertibles, sport coupes, SUVs, a four-door coupe and even an upcoming pickup truck. The German automaker is banking on that diversity to reach an ambitious sales goal of 6.6 million units per annum within ten years from now.

2009 Volkswagen Passat CC-12009 Volkswagen Passat CC-2The svelte new Passat CC unveiled in Detroit will form a big part of the company's push, targeted to sell some 300,000 units around the world over the next six years...pretty ambitious for a niche vehicle, to be sure. Although reports suggest that Volkswagen could be dropping the Passat name from this vehicle (at least in the U.S.) in favor of the "CC" moniker alone, the latest information from the automaker itself (it's a European press release) continues to employ the well-established name, which is the third most popular nameplate in Volkswagen's history behind the Golf and Beetle.

Whatever it will be called, the new four-door coupe will launch in the Fall in markets across Europe, the Far East and North America, and to soften the ground for its landing, VW has laid on us a whole mess of information and new pictures. We're particularly intrigued by the range-topping Passat CC V6 4Motion, packed with all-wheel-drive, DSG and adaptive chassis control. Phaeton who now?

2008 Skoda Octavia Comparo - Petrol vs. Diesel

The Octavia Elegance’s fabulous 2.0 litre TDI (Turbocharged Direct Injection) diesel engine. With 103kW and an impressive 320Nm available it’s an athletic performer, quiet and strong with enough pep to shame larger capacity petrol rivals. Torquey, linear acceleration comes freely after the inital lag which although minimal, is nonetheless noticeable and can be slightly obtrusive in peak hour traffic.

2008 Skoda Octavia Comparo -12008 Skoda Octavia Comparo -2The DSG automatic does a fine job of keeping things on the boil once you’re up and moving, and is always in the right place at the right time. No hunting, minimal thinking, and short direct shifts make for smooth flowing power that works seamlessly to the input from your right foot.

Over the longer country stretches the diesel is a brilliant performer, it overtakes effortlessly and eats up mile after mile without so much as a hint of losing steam, but that initial turbo lag may become distracting to many drivers meaning this car is truly at its best cruising on the highway where lag issues are of little relevance.

The combined fuel consumption average for the week returned a decent 6.6 litres / 100km all up, slightly over the ADR test results of 6.0l and it’s worth noting that even under rigorous stop-start conditions, the TDI still managed to return a maximum of high 8s.

The petrol model was turbo-charged which gave us a much more flexible drive from a smaller capacity engine. Lay off the throttle and you’ve got all the economy benefits of a smaller capacity four cylinder, but stick the boot in and that punchy turbo springs to life, with surprising and effortless performance.

2008 Nissan Denki Cube Concept

(from Nissan Press Release) Nissan’s “Denki Cube” Electric Vehicle Concept Brings Distinctive Spirit Into Play in New York Auto Show Debut

New York City is about to get a lesson in what happens when geography meets geometry – specifically, when the world, which is round, meets the Nissan Cube, which is essentially square. The occasion is the world debut of the Nissan Denki (Japanese for “electric”) Cube Concept at the 2008 New York International Auto Show.

2008 Nissan Denki Cube Concept-12008 Nissan Denki Cube Concept-2The lithium-ion battery-powered Denki Cube electric vehicle concept, which will be on public display at the Nissan exhibit at Jacob Javits Convention Center from March 21 through March 30, was created to draw attention to Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.’s (NML) global environmental efforts. It also serves as a preview of Nissan’s future small car strategy for the North American market, which includes plans to sell a redesigned gasoline-powered, next-generation Cube at Nissan dealers in the United States and Canada beginning in 2009.

About the Denki Cube Concept
In creating the Denki Cube Concept, the designers started with a well-defined canvas, the current-generation Nissan Cube. The iconic Cube has always been the antithesis of traditional automotive style – square, minimalist, asymmetrical and humble – yet also warm, relaxing, practical and undeniably charming. To this solid foundation, the Denki Cube adds a new EV powertrain and unique exterior and interior treatments.

The Denki Cube Concept’s exterior features fresh front and rear styling treatments, including a new “electric themed” front grille design with an AC power charging port, a radical “lightning” headlight design and new bumpers and turn signal lamps. In the rear, the signature Cube asymmetrical rear quarter area (with wraparound glass on one side) has been enhanced by a new bumper with hidden taillights. The roof sheet metal has been replaced with a full fixed glass panel that enhances the interior’s sense of wide-open space. The Denki Cube Concept exterior also features new door mirrors and unique 16-inch wheel covers. The finishing touch is provided by a special white pearl paint and graphics.

The biggest transformation from production Cube to Denki Cube Concept is one that isn’t visible – the replacement of the standard 1.3-liter inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor and laminated lithium-ion batteries located under the floor and seats. The laminated structure and unique material technology offer more power, energy and battery stability, as well as compact size and packaging flexibility, versus conventional cylindrical batteries.

Mazda2 sedan launches in China

There are certain things we may never understand about Eastern cultures. Somewhere down on the list comes the notion that compact hatchbacks look better with diminutive trunks. Take for example this Mazda2 sedan, which the Japanese automaker has prepared especially for the Chinese market. The sedan was unveiled at the Guangzhou Auto Show, and joined the hatchback variant in China this month with prices equivalent to $12,400 for the base 86-hp 1.3 to $16,500 for the fully-loaded 104-hp 1.5.

Mazda2 sedan -1Mazda2 sedan -2Mazda2 sedan -3Like the ironically-named Swift DZire launched by Maruti Suzuki in India, the four-door variant of the Mazda2, albeit considerably less gut-wrenching than the Suzuki, still leaves us scratching our heads. But apparently the Chinese market demands it. Take note, Ford: we don't. So please, if and when you decide to bring us the Mazda2, which has been such a huge success overseas, keep the trunk and give us the hatch.

Fiat 500 estate to take on Clubman

Here's a Fiat 500 that’s got a little bit extra – to boot! The Italian giant is setting its sights on the MINI Club-man with an estate version of its successful small car – and this is how it will look.
Our exclusive pictures reveal the spacious new city challenger, which will hit showrooms in 2010. As you can see, it won’t rely on gimmicks used by its MINI rival, so there are no rear passenger doors, just a practical tailgate.

Fiat 500Fiat 500 The extended roofline boosts head-room in the back and frees up more luggage space, making this the most sensible 500 of the range. The compact estate is inspired by the small load-lugger from the Sixties, and could even carry the same Giardiniera badge worn by that model. Fiat will keep development costs to a minimum by using the same front end and wheelbase as found on the hatch. However, a slightly longer rear overhang, a more upright tail and a pair of neat alloy roof rails will set the new model apart.

The Giardiniera won’t be the first 500 estate to appear, though. Italian coachbuilding firm Castagna showed its vision of the load-lugging city car at the Geneva Motor Show last month.

The firm has a history of beating manufacturers at their own game, having designed a line-up of MINI estates before the Club-man was officially revealed.

The standard 500’s engine range will be carried over to the Giardiniera, so customers will get the choice of an entry-level 69bhp 1.2-litre petrol unit, a more power-ful 100bhp 1.4-litre or a 75bhp 1.3-litre Multijet diesel. Fiat is also believed to be considering a hot Abarth version of the estate if there is sufficient demand. However, the next 500 variant to appear on UK roads will be the cabriolet, as seen in the sketch below. This model is set to be unveiled at the 2009 Geneva expo and hit showrooms late next year.

2009 Cadillac XLR V-Series spy photos

After a 12-year absence, Cadillac is destined for Australia later this year under the watchful eyes of GM Premium (currently managing Saab & Hummer), and we are holding our breaths in anticipation for several hot models. This morning our American based photographer caught the new 2009 Cadillac XLR V-Series as it made its way around town.

2009 Cadillac XLR V-Series-12009 Cadillac XLR V-Series-2The facelifted XLR V-Series gets moderate changes to the front and rear. We can spot a wire-mesh grill with the big Cadillac badge through the camouflage. We also noticed the big fender vent covered up by the black tape – which is all new , although we’re guessing it’s a lot like the fender vent on the Provoq concept.

The American photographer told us that “it was crazy fast and had a really raucous exhaust note…” so it may still continue with the current 4.4-litre, supercharged Northstar V8, good for 330kW.

There is the possibility that it will get the LSA motor found in the 2009 CTSv. The LSA is the 6.2-litre, supercharged, small block V8 pumping out a massive 410kW and 746Nm of torque.

GM Premium currently only has plans to import the Cadillac CTS, however the XLR would make an interesting choice as well.
