Cadillac Voltec-powered Converj

American cars were once the epitome of massive gas-guzzlers but today all the once-great but now- struggling "big three" are working flat out on alternative fuels and smaller vehicles. Another example is the electric- powered Cadillac Converj concept that was one of the star exhibits at the recent North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Developed as a well-appointed grand touring 2+2 coupe with strong design cues and lots of interactive technology, the four-passenger car is intended to show how GM's Voltec electric-propulsion technology could be used to power a luxury coupe.Voltec gives the car a range of up to 65km of petrol- and emissions-free electric driving with extended-range capability of hundreds more kilometres.

With a top speed of 160km/h, the car has independent MacPherson struts, front magnetic ride, a compound crank-twist rear, four-wheel disc brakes, full regenerative brakes to maximise energy capture and electric power-assisted steering. It has a 2742mm wheelbase, massive 21-inch wheels at the front and 22s at the rear, and is 4620mm long, 1883mm wide and 1368mm high.

The Cadillac's Voltec electric propulsion system comprises a 16-kWh, T-shaped battery, an electric drive unit and a four-cylinder engine- generator and electricity is its primary energy source. A thermally managed battery pack with more than 220 lithium-ion cells is integrated into the Converj's chassis and stores electricity from the grid when the vehicle is plugged in. It takes less than three hours to recharge the battery at 240V, or about eight hours from a 120V outlet.

When the battery's energy is low, the Converj seamlessly switches to extended-range mode. During this secondary level of operation, electricity needed to power the vehicle is created on-board by a flex-fuel- powered engine that operates rather like a home generator to create electricity. Irrespective of whether the car is in electric or extended-range mode, the Converj is propelled by an electric- drive unit that converts into mechanical energy the battery's electrical energy or the energy from the engine-generator. The energy generated during braking is captured and stored in the battery and the driver has 370Nm of instant torque and 120kW of power to play with.

The aerodynamically designed Cadillac Voltec-powered Converj uses GM's magnetic ride control and the car's all-glass roof incorporates solar panels that help offset power drain from the vehicle's accessories. To reduce drag, there is a full under-vehicle cover and small grille openings and low-profile rear-vision cameras replace conventional outside mirrors.

New Ford F-150 Pricing

Ford product planners became more than a little concerned over the long term future of the company cash cow, the F-150 pickup. Although the all-new F-150, then undergoing final testing before launch, was a careful evolution of a highly successful formula, no-one knew whether that meant much anymore.

In May, as the average price of a gallon of gas neared $4.00, the F-150 was knocked off the top of the monthly sales charts for the first time in 17 years, outsold by Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord. That sent a chill through Dearborn: Ford's product planners knew that for most of the 30-plus years the F-150 had reigned as America's -- the world's - best selling vehicle, gas had cost $2 a gallon or less. The world had changed. America was changing. Maybe the F-150 would have to change, too.

The solution wasn't rocket science: develop a pickup truck that was smaller and lighter. The product planners looked at three options -- adapting the T6 Ranger pickup being developed by The T6 Ranger was discounted because it was simply too small. A D4-based unibody truck looked costly and time consuming. That left a lighter truck built around the new F-150 hardware.

The more the product planners looked at it, the more appealing the idea appeared. The new Ford F-150 frame, designed to deliver maximum towing and payload capacity, was stoutly engineered, and therefore heavy. A revised frame, built to the smaller 126 in. and 133 in. F-150 wheelbases (which would allow a regular cab model with a 6.5 ft bed and a Supercab model with a 5.5 ft bed) and optimized for lower towing and payload, could be made lighter. Lighter wheels, tires, and suspension components could be used.

Body-on-frame construction mean a unique cab and front clip could be relatively inexpensively engineered. The F-150 beds could be carried over. Powertrains would be Ecoboost four cylinder and V-6 turbos. The V-6 looked especially promising -- even in a relatively mild state of tune the 3.7-liter turbo could pump out more power and torque than the F-150's base V-8.

The Ford F-150 could tow 11,300 lb, more than anything in its class. They reasoned that if the F-100 was to be Ford truck tough it, too, would need an impressive towing number. They picked, quite arbitrarily, say my sources, 7500 lb. That pushed up the overall vehicle weight. It pushed up cost. It killed engine choices. And in the end, it killed the F-100, too, when Kuzak and marketing boss Jim Farley rightly concluded that suddenly they didn't have the 21st century, $4-a-gallon pickup truck they thought they once had.

Biofuel powered Extreme Bentley to debut at Geneva Motor Show

With a little more than a month left until the Geneva Motor Show starts, Bentley has announced today that one of their stand’s starts will be what they call their fastest and most powerful production car ever. Of course, that’s interesting, but not that interesting, you might say. But that’s not all. The car, named “Extreme Bentley” so far, will run on biofuel.

That’s about all the details the British company has released, but considering the current most powerful Bentley is a 600 hp beast, we can only dream about what the Geneva car will be like. And about the biofuel part, the guys from Autoblog expect to see an ethanol adapted version of the twin-turbocharged W12 that powers the most powerful Bentley in production.

The new Porsche museum opening January 31 – Video

Exactly four years after Viennese architect Delgan Meissl won the competition to design the Porsche museum, tomorrow Porsche will open the museum to the public. The structure will house 80 vehicles, of which some will rotate through international shows dedicated to historic Porsches. Among some of the most important vehicles is the first Porsche built in 1948, some rare versions of the Porsche 356, the McLaren TAG MP4/2 with Porsche engine, and a large display of competition and series cars. A classic Volkswagen, forerunner of the original Porsche and project from Ferdinand Porsche, will also be on display.

Mercedes Benz E Class Coupe spied in Spain

A couple of days ago we showed you a few leaked photos of the new E Class Coupe, Mercedes’ replacement for the current CLK and now we’ve got the first photos showing the car on the street. The vehicle was photographed in Mallorca, Spain during an internal event for employees, by the guys from Motorpasion and it has minimal camouflage; except for the headlights and tail lights, which are covered, the car is completely undisguised.

So, what do you think, will Mercedes be able to compete with the other German luxury coupes, like the 3 Series Coupe or the Audi A5/S5? I think they can, because, like any other Mercedes model, they’ve decided to go for more stylish and less aggressive, which I think will appeal to a lot of customers.

Hennessey ZR700 Corvette ZR1 - Video

Hennessey has released their performance upgrade package for the Corvette ZR1, called the Hennessey ZR700. As the name implies the Hennessey ZR700 Corvette ZR1 is powered by the 6.2-liter V8 supercharged engine that has been tuned to output 755 hp at 6,600 rpm and 730 lb-ft Torque at 4,000 rpm. The tuner says the Hennessey ZR700 Corvette ZR1 is able to get from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and to 150 mph in 13.1 seconds. The car runs a quarter mile in 10.7 seconds at 139 mph and has an estimated top speed of 210 mph.

The Hennessey ZR700 Corvette ZR1 upgrade package includes a new supercharger pulley, a K&N air filter, stainless steel headers, high flow catalytic converters with mid pipes, high flow cylinder heads, a camshaft upgrade and an intercooler system upgrade. The Hennessey ZR700 Corvette ZR1 also has a re-programmed ECU. The Hennessey ZR700 Corvette ZR1 price has not been announced yet.

Shelby new special-edition Mustang at NHRA Winternats

We don't know what it is yet, but according to the folks at InsideLine, Carroll Shelby is preparing to unveil a new special-edition Ford Mustang next week. Rumored to be less powerful than the GT500KR, the limited-run model will make its debut as part of a benefit dinner for a new museum of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), held during the Winternationals.

Shelby will reportedly be joined at the unveiling of the new 'Stang by top-fuel drag-racing legend Don "The Snake" Prudhomme. We'll be eagerly watching the timing lights to see what the Snake Charmer has in store for gearheads this time.

“The Extreme Bentley Continental GT” – video

A teaser video has just been released, giving various clues as to the drivetrain and shape of Bentley’s new flex-fuel monster. Bentley’s teaser pic from yesterday gave little away, except for the fact that the new car will be a Continental based platform. But a quick scan through the video and you can detect that it is indeed an iteration of the Bentley Continental GT. A view of the motor also shows that it won’t be the W16 from Bugatti, but will be the traditional W12 twin turbo. Bonnet vents and a darker grille round out the exterior treatments.

A SUV, and particularly one which is driven by a diesel engine, is not quite a lazy car. Mercedes tuner KICHERER shows how the Mercedes GL 420 CDI learns to fly in its recent reincarnation named KICHERER GL 42 Black Line.

The KICHERER GL draws its extended force resources from a modified engine control unit wrenching 360hp and a torque of 900Nm from the V8 engine. To make sure that this excess in performance may be properly enjoyed, the electronic Vmax limit has been raised to 280km/h. The suspension is electronically adjusted and comes up with a much sportier characteristic curve preventing the SUV from loosing its temper. The accelerator pedal’s response behaviour, too, has been electronically optimised in order to make sure that the engine will release its performance more spontaneously. These technical modifications are brought to perfection by a two-pass sports exhaust system.

To illustrate the increased motor activity visually, the KICHERER GL has been provided with an off-road package comprising, among other things, running boards, larger fenders, a new grille and a roof-edge spoiler as well as numerous black body trims. A complete special edition 21“ wheelset with wide-base tyres is the cherry on top. Inside the car, KICHERER drivers will enjoy a sports steering wheel, trim parts made of genuine carbon as well as a complete leather equipment covering even the roof interior and many other elements. All tuning components are sold singly or are already integrated in a complete vehicle. The test car price of the 2009 Kicherer Mercedes-Benz GL 42 Black Line is 125,820 Euros.

2009 BMW 7 Series - video

This 2009 BMW 7 Series video review is done by the guys from the UK TV show Fifth Gear who used the BMW 750Li version. The BMW 750Li comes with a 4.4 liter V8 engine developing 600Nm of torque and 407hp. It has a top speed of 155mph and can get from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. The performance figures are impressive, but even more impressive is the technology featured by the new 2009 BMW 7 Series. One of the most interesting features are the side-view cameras mounted on the front wheel arches that enable the driver to see a junction before actually entering it.

Toyota Yaris recall

Toyota and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced today a major Safety Recall involving 134,900 Yaris units. The Toyota Yaris recall refers to vehicle sold in the United States and built from 2006 through 2007.

The Toyota Yaris is equipped with driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners that retract the seat belts in case of a crash. The reason for this Toyota Yaris recall is that the pretensioner deployment may affect the sound insulating foam in the center pillar, following a collision.

Toyota will inform owners of the involved vehicles with a Safety Recall notification via first-class mail beginning in early February. Owners are requested to contact their local Toyota dealer for repair. The repair will take approximately one hour, depending on the dealer's workload.

2009 Ford Expedition

Recent years have seen sales of truck-based, full-size SUV fall as dramatically as fuel prices have risen, forcing consumers to be more realistic about what they drive. The growing number of crossover SUVs (which are based on lighter car platforms) has given those who need the passenger and cargo-carrying capacity of a big SUV a more reasonable alternative. Though not as capable in terms of heavy-duty towing and off-road ability, these more maneuverable and fuel-efficient crossovers are ideal for most large-SUV intenders. But for that smaller percentage of buyers who require the serious work capabilities of a traditional full-size SUV, there is the 2009 Ford Expedition.

All is not excellent in Expedition world, however. The big bruiser has a few minor faults. Some controls and displays aren't always easy to read or use, and some plastics feel cheap. And rivals beat the Ford in a few areas. The Chevrolet Tahoe rides a bit smoother, the Nissan Armada has more off-road prowess and the Toyota Sequoia has a more powerful V8. But in the areas that typically matter the most, the 2009 Ford Expedition compares favorably. It's the king at carrying both people and cargo, it's relatively easy to drive and it boasts a lower-than-average price. For those shopping for a traditional full-size SUV, Ford's Expedition is certainly worth consideration.

The 2009 Ford Expedition is a full-size, body-on-frame SUV available in four trim levels: XLT, Eddie Bauer, Limited and King Ranch. The well-equipped XLT model seats five and comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, running boards, air-conditioning (with rear controls), front captain's chairs, a power driver seat, cruise control, full power accessories and a six-speaker CD stereo with an auxiliary input jack. Next up is the Eddie Bauer, which adds 18-inch wheels, gold body cladding and running boards, a power-folding third-row seat, leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, an upgraded sound system (with an in-dash CD changer and satellite radio), the Sync multimedia voice control system, power front seats with driver memory settings, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls.

All Expeditions come standard with a 5.4-liter V8 making 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. It's matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. Two-wheel or four-wheel drive (with low-range gearing) is offered. An Expedition 4WD we tested accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 8.9 seconds, a respectable time for this heavyweight class. Properly equipped, the Expedition can tow a 9,200-pound trailer. Fuel mileage estimates for a 2WD Expedition stand at 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway and 16 mpg combined, about par for the segment.

2009 FAM F-City

(from FAM Press Release) At a cost of $15 million, the F-City project is to develop an individual electric vehicle with free access, which would be "a response to the call for the City of Paris for the Auto'lib. Several other cities are interested but also the SNCF which wants to integrate a combined train/individual electric vehicle" says Pascal Bernard, general manager of FAM Automobiles.

The Eastern French competitiveness cluster "Vehicles of the Future" aims to become the benchmark for innovative solutions to urban mobility. Among the most successful projects, there are two self-service vehicles with electric motors: The Crystal of Lohr Industrie, and the F-City, FAM Automobiles. The first one could be driven in three years either in the form of individual vehicles or in "convoy" collective. The second, based on a system of removable batteries, will enter into a production phase in 2009.

The centre of Alsace and Franche-Comtй seeks to solve the problem of individual travel in the city. "We believe that all communities will restrict or prohibit access to conventional cars in the city centre. We therefore support projects that offer alternatives, based on the provision of clean vehicles for free access" explains Philippe Chican, director of corporate R & D centre vehicles of the future.

If Philippe Chican believes in the future cars with fuel cells, the mobility projects the most advanced to date relate to the time of electric motor-powered vehicles. "F-City" has emerged within the cluster. And "it is not a model, the products are already in process" says Pascal Bernard. Also, the F-City is more than just an electric vehicle; it is a "family of mobility solutions, which includes an embedded intelligence tested for two years now on a fleet of vehicles in Antibes" says Pascal Bernard.

This technology allows the user wishing to rent an F-City to locate the vehicle in the nearest terminal or to thwart the daily traffic problems downtown. F-City has another advantage: "F-City addresses the issue of charging time of batteries, the main obstacle to the use of electric vehicles. In fact, rather than stop a car for eight hours to recharge, the operator of the fleet of F-City can change the battery, since we have developed a rack system removable in ten minutes" says the General Manager of FAM. In 2010, an NGV version of the F-City will be in production in order to allow a better autonomy.

The Ford Taurus SHO is back, and here's further proof. These photos show the 2010 Ford Taurus SHO, which we expect to see revealed next month in Chicago, doing some humid weather testing in Florida.

The undisguised exterior doesn't leave much to the imagination — especially since we've already seen the 2010 Ford Taurus live and in person. In fact, the only difference in design between the SHO and non-SHO Taurus appears to be the badge on the back and the separated double pipes.

Based on what we learned from the leaked Taurus ordering guide and other sources, the new SHO will likely get the EcoBoost V6 engine, which is good for 355 HP and 350 lb-ft of torque in its 2010 Lincoln MKS platform-mate.

2012 Porsche Boxster – Spied

If the prototypes don't seem very different from the current model, consider it a sign. Porsche is happy with the current styling formula, but proportions will be altered slightly. We believe it will look closer than ever to the original concept car that stunned the 1993 Detroit auto show. With the next Boxster, Porsche is copying the approach to the next-generation 911—to be dubbed the 991, not 998—a car which we have have also spied. That 911 will be launched about six months before the Boxster. The trilogy will be completed with the next Cayman, to be launched in mid-2012.

The engines will be carried over virtually unchanged. Porsche Boxster (2.9-liter non-direct injection flat-six) and Boxster S (3.4-liter direct-injection flat-six) are currently rated at 255 hp and 310 hp, respectively, while the Cayman and Cayman S are rated at 265 hp and 320 hp. These numbers won't change a lot, although a slight power increase would make sense and is always welcome.

Transmissions will also carry over, including a short-throw six-speed manual and the new seven-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission, which works well on the current model but is somewhat awkward to operate in manual mode when using the steering-wheel-mounted buttons. Expect paddle shifters on the next Boxster. An all-wheel-drive version is highly unlikely, given that the Boxster's transmission sits behind the engine.

The new Boxster and Cayman are bad news for Finnish manufacturer Valmet, which will lose production of both models to Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. Porsche was Valmet's only customer, and when the Boxster runs out in 2011 and the Cayman in 2012, the coachbuilder hopes to fill the gap with the Fisker Karma, which is scheduled to go into production in late 2009.

Magna Steyr currently produces the BMW X3, the Mercedes G-class, and the Saab 9-3 convertible, as well as European-market versions of the Chrysler 300, Jeep Commander, and Jeep Grand Cherokee. But much of its capacity is unused and the next X3 will move to BMW’s South Carolina plant, so the Boxster and Cayman will give Magna’s venerable plant a new lease of life. The Cayman will be made exclusively in Graz, the Boxster will be made in Graz and in Porsche's own plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. Doing so allows Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking to utilize a clever strategy: Have Porsche’s own plant running at capacity at all times while allowing the contract manufacturer to absorb market fluctuation.

2009 Opel Ampera

Opel is set to reveal the Ampera Electric car at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, effectively unveiling the European design for the Chevrolet Volt.The five-door, four-seat Opel Ampera uses an identical platform to the Volt, utilising GM’s Voltec electric propulsion technology.

Like its North American sibling, the Ampera is capable of short trips up to 60km on batter power alone charged via a standard household power outlet.

“With the Ampera, Opel will be the first European automobile manufacturer to provide customers several hundred kilometres of non-stop electric driving,” said Alain Visser, GM Europe Chief Marketing Officer.

Beyond this distance, an onboard small combustion engine generates electricity which in turn drives the motor and charges the battery. The Ampera is well-suited to the daily driving schedule of most European customers with around 80 per cent of German drivers travelling less than 50km daily.

Who said supercars can driven in perfect weather conditions only? In the past few weeks we have seen the Nissan GT-R conquering a Nurburgring race track covered in snow and the Lamborghini Gallardo being tossed around a snowy race track by Tiff Needell. It was about time for the Bugatti Veyron to do the exact same thing. This Bugatti Veyron on snow video was shot in Sweden and yes, it too can go sideways. We wonder if the guys driving this 1,000 hp Bugatti Veyron turned of the traction control of the 1.5 million$ hyper car.

HUMMER H2 production suspended

General Motors and AM General have announced that 200 workers at the Mishawaka, Indiana, plant where the HUMMER H2 and military versions of the HMMWV are assembled will be temporarily laid off until at least March. All of the affected workers assemble civilian HUMMERS, though it's rumored that the company may move some of these displaced employees to the military side of the operation.

This round of cuts can be attributed to slow sales of large, fuel-thirsty SUVs in general and the aging H2 in particular. AM General spokesperson Craig Mac Nab was quoted as saying, "Nobody knows what's going to happen with the H2 plant." In fact, nobody at either company is talking about when these employees may be called back or when H2 production will resume, leading some of us to wonder if it will pick back up at all.

The Japanese tuners from IdingPower have released their upgrade package for the new BMW M3 E92. The IdingPower BMW M3 E92 immediately captures all the attention with the oversized rear wing, and although the BMW M3 could use some extra downforce on the rear axle, we think this is a bit too much. Even for a drag strip.

We can't imagine how you'll be able to go unnoticed past police cars with this wing. The rest of the body kit, including the front spoiler and the new rims, looks pretty decent. The IdingPower BMW M3 E92 also comes with suspension and brakes upgrades and a new exhaust system.

2009 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione

Turns out the Alfa Romeo 8C - or the U.S. verson of it, at least - isn't perfect after all. Due to an incorrect torque setting on the front and rear suspension upper and lower ball joint nuts, Maserati is recalling 7,912 vehicles in the U.S. They include the 8Cs that have made it over here (thought to number 88), as well as GranTurismos and Quattroportes from the 2008 model year.

If unchecked, the ball joint nuts will come loose, and that will cause problems ranging from steering wheel vibration to separation of the steering arm. That, unsurprisingly, "could result in a loss of steering capability," which usually leads to a crash.

2009 Fiat Qubo

Good: Useful small family MPV with sliding side doors, 2,500 litre capacity and option of 6-speed Dualogic automated manual with 1.25 diesel engine

The Fiat Fiorino was developed by both Fiat and PSA (Peugeot and Citroen) and aimed to fill a niche below the small van segment with a under 4 meter van.

2009 Fiat Qubo is in essence the passenger version of the light van Fiorino and is branded as an MPV. The small MPV measures just 3.959 meters long, 1.735 meters high and 1.716 meters wide but still offers 650 to 2,500 liters of cargo space.

Power for the five-seater comes from a choice of petrol or diesel engines like the 1.3 liter 75 bhp Multijet or 1.4 liter 73 bhp petrol engine and can be hooked up to a 5-speed manual or a robotized 6-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is impressive at just 4.5 l per 100 km and certain models emit less than 120 g/km of CO2.

2009 Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet spied

The entire new generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class range is slowly being unveiled to the public both through legitimate and unofficial means. The latest variant to be caught in the public eye has been a deceptively camouflaged prototype of the E-Class Cabriolet, so far called the CLK. While features such as the headlights and tail lamps have been covered over, their design is no real mystery, having already been unveiled on the sedan variant at the Detroit Auto Show.

Although the most crucial feature is the seemingly soft-top convertible roof, which is actually a clever way of hiding the retractable hard-top design. Clearly visible in these images is the joint between the windshield and front edge of the roof, along with the wider disguise of the c-post and matching wider boot deck lid.

Still officially baring the CLK namesake, the new E-Class coupe and cabriolet are based on the C-Class sedan to meet the more ambitious driving demands of prospective buyers.The engine line-up will also come from the current C-Class range, including a flagship V8 unit for an E 500.
2009 Mercede E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet are expected to arrive in showrooms overseas by mid to late 2009.

2009 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR

Stuttgart. The successful Porsche 911 GT3 RSR takes off into the new model year with extensive modifications. The most powerful race car based on the Porsche 911, which last season secured wins in the American Le Mans Series and at the Nьrburgring 24 Hours, competes in the GT2 class at international long distance races. The most distinguishing feature of the new GT3 RSR is the redesigned front with large air outlets on the front hood. Under the light-weight bodyshell, as well, major changes were made to the quickest 911.

e lights in the front apron, which helps to immediately recognise race cars when they enter the pits in the dark. For eas-ier servicing under race conditions, other modifications were made. The GT3 RSR now fea-tures a new air-jack system with overpressure valve. The oil refill with fast filling function has now moved to the rear lid, giving mechanics better access.

Aside from GT3 Cup and the GT3 Cup S, the GT3 RSR is the third race car based on the Porsche 911 offered by Porsche Motorsport. About 20 of the successful long distance racers have been built in Weissach and are now being delivered to customer teams around the world. The GT3 RSR costs 380,000 Euro plus VAT specific to each country.

We question the absolute legitimacy of these photos, but they could quite possibly be the first official images of the 2010 Mercedes E500 Coupe. The 2010 E-Class sedan has already been revealed so the front design doesn't tell us anything new, but the rear end and the profile have been tidied up nicely to create the coupe. No official information is available, but we expect the new E-Class Coupe to receive not only the V8, but the whole range of engines offered to it's sedan sibling.

2009 BMW X6 xDrive50i

When BMW sent out invitations to the launch of its new X6, the Xdrive50i, I was a little sceptical about the particular drive route chosen for the vehicle in question. Nor was it the thought that we’d run out of brakes given this X6 features 358mm discs all round plus the full house of BMW’s latest braking technology. No, this didn’t faze me in the slightest. What was of just a slight concern to me was the fact that the roads chosen to highlight the xDrive50i’s potential were the exact ones I spend quiet weekdays riding my high-powered sports bike.

This is a place where quick changes in direction and altitude, fast runs through tight twisty turns, and breathtakingly sharp crests that fall away dramatically in to razor sharp turns are, well, let’s just say a challenge. Surely the X6 Sports Activity Coupe with its 2190kg tare weight, higher ground clearance and 1690mm body height couldn’t possibly handle roads like this, it’s clearly a case of marketing suicide. In a few short hours I’d eat my words, for as one of the other automotive writers on our drive day put it, “this thing handles like no SUV should”, and you know what? He’s right.

The xDrive50i sits atop the X6 tree with the six-cylinder diesel and petrol models below it respectively and is priced to rival Range Rover’s Supercharged Sport and Porsche’s Cayenne GTS in terms of bang for your buck. The xDrive50i is significantly quicker given the relative power similarities, it also uses less fuel than the two competitors mentioned. It’s fractionally more powerful, is lighter, and produces fewer emissions - and speaking from personal experience - also out handles the pair significantly.

The 0-100km/h run is dealt with in 5.4 seconds and if that doesn’t do it for you then perhaps the fact that the X6 will eat a kilometre from a standing start in under 25 seconds will. In fact it’d probably be quicker were it not speed limited to 250km/h. With that kind of performance you could swear fuel consumption would be a nightmare but the average is claimed at 13.8 litres per 100km when fuelled with 98RON petrol. Even at the hands of myself for a day the xDrive50i managed 14.4 litres on average. In theory this means a maximum cruising range of just over 600km from the 85-litre tank.

Suspension utilises a self-levelling pneumatic system with a dual traverse link set up in the front and a multi-link arrangement in the rear. The handling is incredible with sensational grip on hand through the 20-inch diameter rims (10-inch wide front/11-inch wide rear), with well weighted feedback from the steering. The best analogy – and the one provided to us – was to think of it like steering a canoe. You can do it two ways. Say for example you want to go left, either you place the left oar in the water to act as a brake (DSC) or you paddle harder on the right hand side of the canoe to make the turn (DPC). Great isn’t it?

BMW Sauber F1.09

The BMW Sauber F1 Team raised the curtain on its 2009 season in Formula One in Valencia this morning. Robert Kubica (24) and Nick Heidfeld (31) unveiled the new BMW Sauber F1.09 shortly after nine o’clock. Kubica then took the car for its first lap of the southern Spanish circuit. The team goes into its fourth season with the ambitious aim of fighting for the World Championship title.

BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen reinforces the point: “We have set ourselves the task of further improving our performance relative to the rest of the field. The 1-2 in Canada and a total of eleven podium finishes in 2008 set an exacting standard. In 2009 we are looking to maintain our first-class reliability record while at the same time enhancing our performance levels so that we can be at the front of the pack on a consistent basis. We are aware that we are aiming extremely high. This is the final step in our development, and that’s generally the hardest one to take.”

2009 also marks the return of treadless tyres (slicks) to Formula One. These will deliver increased front-end grip, which makes moving more weight to the nose of the car an attractive proposition. Counteracting this, however, is another new development which the teams have the option of introducing in the upcoming season: KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System). The component parts of this technology add extra weight at the rear of the car. Alongside aerodynamics and the optimum use of the slick tyres, the integration of KERS represents another key challenge for the engineers. To this end, the front axle has been modified and the rear axle is a new design.

Willy Rampf is responsible for the F1.09 concept and will oversee operations at the race track in his capacity as Technical Coordinator. Managing Director of BMW Sauber AG Walter Riedl will lead the technical department at Hinwil in Switzerland and has responsibility for the development of the car. While the chassis is the work of the Hinwil team, the KERS technology has been developed in Munich. There, Markus Duesmann (Head of Powertrain) and his team also have the job of preparing the BMW V8 engine for the extra mileage stipulated in the regulations. Each driver is allocated eight engines for the total of 17 races in 2009.

It may be all-change in terms of the engineering behind the car, but the men behind the wheel will be the same as in 2008. The BMW Sauber F1 Team will once again line up on the grid with the Pole Robert Kubica and German Nick Heidfeld as its driver pairing. And 26-year-old Austrian Christian Klien also stays with the team as test and reserve driver.

Next-generation Porsche Boxster caught testing - spied

Porsche just unveiled improved versions of its Boxster and Cayman at the 2008 LA Auto Show last November, but they're already hard at work on the next all-new Boxster that's still a few years out. Destined for a debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the next Boxster will reportedly feature all-new sheetmetal with sources saying not a single body panel will remain untouched. The spy shots in our gallery below show an early development mule already wearing cladding to hide some of the new design elements.

Porsche is also delving beneath the skin to improve the car's mechanicals, and weight saving measures are reportedly at the top of list. If Porsche can decrease the Boxster's curb weight enough, it will likely use a smaller turbocharged four-cylinder to power the car. Though still likely to offer more than 200 hp, a smaller powerplant would enable Porsche to meet more stringent emissions and fuel economy regulations while maintaining the mid-engine sports car's performance and world renowned handling.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR

Mitsubishi Lancer Evos are supposed to be good for work and play, but Jason Cammisa found the Evo to be a less than desirable travel companion on a recent trek to Pittsburg; "highway cruising range (200 miles) is unacceptable, and it's made possible by horrendous, disgusting, and inexcusable fuel consumption." Jason recorded about 16.3 mpg and he was mostly cruising on the highway for 715 miles. We don't mind the ridiculous fuel consumption during extended bouts of drifting and playing on gravel roads, but it's almost laughable to think of taking the Evo on an extended trip with such a short range.

Though the Evo has largely been trouble-free, we managed to damage a wheel and discovered a replacement for the stock wheel cost $950. Hey, Mitsubishi dealers have to make their money somewhere. There have also been reports of the radio/navigation unit not displaying anything for up to 15 minutes on extremely cold days. No other vehicles in our fleet had this problem with touch-screen displays.

Nobody argues about the ride quality, handling, or wonderful Recaro seats, but the radio, fuel consumption, and small trunk make the Evo far from perfect. If you're in the mood for a spirited drive this is your car. Those looking to mix work with pleasure find the car to be too hardcore for everyday life and, ironically, a bit too soft when compared with the previous Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution if you really want to hammer on it.

2009 ABT Sportsline Audi Q5 SUV

Making its way through the Volkswagen Group SUV line-up with the Touareg, Q7 and Tiguan Sportsline models, ABT has now turned its focus on the new Q5 crossover. The 2.0 and 3.0 TDI models along with the 2.0 TFSI have all received the ABT Sportsline treatment, evoking the ‘five wows’ in the words of Hans-Jurgen, managing director of ABT Sportsline - fast, beefy, extravagant and extremely versatile.

2009 ABT Sportsline Golf MkVI

As the new generation MkVI Volkswagen Golf prepares for its launch down under, German tuner ABT has already completed its performance overhaul of the latest Golf models. The ABT Sportsline Golf range includes the entry-level 1.4 TSI model, the 2.0 TSI and even the 2.0 TDI diesel. Each tuned model is a step above its production equivalent, with the standard 90kW 1.4 TSI engine boosted to 125kW by ABT, while the high-output version develops 147kW up from 118kW - just shy of the power produced by the 2.0 TSI in standard guise.

The true power package is available through the ABT Sportsline 2.0 TSI which now pumps out 176kW compared to 154kW for the standard model. Economically minded drivers are also well catered for, with the 2.0 TDI also receiving the ABT treatment, producing an extra 22kW over the standard model for a total of 125kW.

These tuned models also receive the handling and braking upgrades required for the extra power, featuring ABT lowered springs or threaded suspension together with the option for larger 345mm discs or a sports braking system with 380mm rotors. The range also boasts the visual styling to match the under-bonnet tweaking, with ABT designers developing a unique aero kit incorporating a front grille and apron, side skirts, rear apron and spoiler.

Tesla Roadster Sport new pics

Here are some new shots of the Tesla Roadster Sport, special version of the American electric spider. Tesla Sport will be 15 percent more powerful than the standard model (which may receive an upgrade all the same), and is sold for a price of 112,000 euros.

Excluding the special colouring and new carbon fibre details, the most important news is in the driver’s compartment. New sports seats have been added, along with a new dash with updated battery display in the centre, central console with new single-gear feature (rather than the previous gear shift) with keyboard set-up.

2010 Mazda3 MPS Mazdaspeed

The 2010 Mazda3 isn't yet for sale and already Mazda is prepping the next MPS, .a.k.a. the 2010 Mazda3 MPS Mazdaspeed for the Geneva Motor Show.

Following on the heals of the 2010 Mazda3 hatchback reveal, Mazda is planning to bring their latest hot-hatch Mazdaspeed version to Geneva. According to sources, the European "MPS" version will get a turbocharged 2.3-Liter engine while the American version will get the 2.5-Liter engine. Despite the differences, both should produce around 268 HP.

There are other rumors out there, including the possibility of the FWD suspension system from the Euro Ford Focus RS. From these spy photos it's obvious the new hatch is going to get the typical visual accessories including a hoodscoop, larger wheels, more aggressive front bumper, large spoiler and rocker body panels.

2010 Lexus RX450h

Lexus RX is the best-selling Lexus, and one in five sold is the hybrid version. It's no surprise, then, that with the new third-generation RX - the second to have a hybrid powertrain - Lexus is treading very carefully.

The design is a careful evolution, both inside and out. The car is slightly longer and wider but manages to look sleeker than before. The interior retains the traditional Lexus virtues of comfort and refinement. Lexus has joined the Germans by adopting an iDrive-style controller instead of a touch screen for its optional navigation system. But rather than a knob you twist and push, the Lexus control works more like a joystick that you move from side to side or forward and back, and then make a selection by pressing buttons on the side of the unit. It takes some getting used to.

Other new options don't require a learning curve, such as the head-up display and the curb-view camera; the latter is located in the right-side mirror, and at low speeds it shows an image of what's alongside the car. The hybrid model supplements its previous ECO indicator, which lights up when you're driving efficiently, with a selectable ECO mode, which changes the responsiveness of the throttle and instructs the climate control to use the A/C compressor more judiciously. There's also an EV mode, which extends the threshold before the engine starts, up to a still-modest 8 to 10 mph.

The changes aren't dramatic, but Lexus has given its cushy suburban hybrid a slightly greener tinge. Lexus engineers identify four elements that underpin the brand's hybrids: performance, quiet refinement, low emissions, and fuel economy. In this redesign, the latter received the most emphasis.

Whereas the standard RX350's 3.5-liter V-6 is little changed (adding 5 hp for a total of 275 hp), Lexus RX450h got a whole new gasoline engine. Replacing the old 3.3-liter is a new 3.5-liter V-6 that runs on the more efficient Atkinson cycle. EPA numbers for the front-wheel-drive RX hybrid are up by 1 mpg city and 3 mpg highway, to 28/27 mpg. The all-wheel-drive version adds 2 mpg all around and is now rated at 28/26 mpg

Despite the increased fuel economy, the RX pecking order has been preserved, with the hybrid again outmuscling the standard Lexus RX350. The hybrid's total power output is up by 27 hp, to 295 hp, and both the gasoline engine and the electric motors make more torque. Against that, however, is the car's weight gain of more than 400 pounds. Still, the RX hybrid accelerates quickly and smoothly. Once again, the all-wheel-drive model adds a third motor/generator, which is the sole source of propulsion for the rear wheels. In either version, the start-up and shutdown of the gasoline V-6 is seamless, but in steady-state cruising on level ground, there is the faintest surging as the batteries switch between charging and assisting.

Honda Insight – video

After the official shots and technical details of the new Honda Insight, here is the official video of the new hybrid, up for competition in the field of the Toyota Prius. Just like its more famous rival, the Honda Insight is planning on production of 200,000 examples in 2009 in the North American market, with hopes to recoup from the crisis experienced by more traditional models.


The Insight price should be more convenient than the Prius, coming in at around 21,000 euros, compared to 26,000 in the American market. In April we will see the model on the European market. The Honda Insight has a 1.3 litre petrol engine at 88hp and 123 Nm, combined with an electric unit of nearly 14hp and 103 Nm, with average consumption sitting at 4.4 litres/100km, and only 101 g/km of CO2 emissions.

2009 Renault Megane wagon - spied

With the new generation Renault Megane making its debut just a few months ago, these new spy shots reveal a station-wagon version is also on its way.

The prototype in question was undergoing harsh durability testing at minus 37 degrees Celsius in northern Scandinavia when these images were taken.

This new station-wagon model is Renault’s answer to the Peugeot 308 Touring,which made its global debut at the Melbourne International Motor Show early last year.

The new model is much more than just a mature evolution of the current Megane Estate and will lack the most controversial features of its predecessor.

It will feature both a more composed design and ride, using the new super-platform developed by Renault’s sister company Nissan, already found in the Nissan Dualis.

Peugeot 3008 Crossover

Who said cars had to fall into only one category? Nissan bucked the trend first with its quirky Qashqai hatchback-SUV crossover, and now Peugeot are taking mixed DNA a step further with the 3008 – using elements from an SUV, hatchback and MPV.

Formerly known as the T84 and previewed by the Prologue Concept at Paris last year, the 3008 is unmistakeably Peugeot. Its grille is stretched vertically to match the car’s tall but chunky stance, and gives the imposing look of an SUV. Large window areas in profile, as well as an optional glass roof, help to flood the cabin with light, while the over size LED rear lights and split tailgate demonstrate the 3008’s fusion of fashion and practicality.

On the inside Peugeot’s innovative Multiflex interior means that folding the rear and front passenger seats leaves a perfectly flat loading area, capable of swallowing 1,604-litres of luggage. Plus there’s a raft of new hi-tech kit - things such as a fighter-jet-style head-up display and a radar-controlled distance alert to help the driver maintain a safe distance to the car ahead.

To ensure it drives more like a hatchback and less like an MPV, Peugeot has introduced Dynamic Roll Control to the rear suspension, which keeps unwanted body-roll in check. Engine choices include three diesels – the most frugal of which, the 1.6 HDi 110, emits just 130g/km of CO2 and returns 58mpg at the pumps. Petrol options consist of a 1.6-litre unit in naturally aspirated or turbocharged form.

More importantly however, from 2011 the Peugeot 3008 Crossover will become the first hybrid Peugeot ever, using the same technology previewed on the Prologue concept. The diesel-electric powertrain will use the oil-burner to power the front wheels and an electric motor to turn the rears, resulting in a 35 per cent increase in fuel economy.

Prices for the 3008 range are set carry a premium of about £1,000 over the equivalent 308 hatchback models when it hits UK showrooms this summer. However, that’s not all Peugeot has in store. Our sources say the company is also readying an all-new seven-seat MPV, based on the same platform. This is due to appear in 2010.

Škoda Fabia Jingrui is launched in China

Škoda celebrated the launch of the Fabia Jingrui on the 22nd December 2008, marking the entry of the car into the Chinese AO-class market.

Liu Jian, General Manager of SVW (Shanghai Volkswagen Group), stated that “The Fabia Jingrui is of very high quality. Boasting space and practicality, as well as a great price, the Fabia will offer a great experience for customers in the China market.”

The Fabia Jingrui is available in China in two engines, 1.4 litre and 1.6 litre, offering a Tiptronic 6-speed gearbox and 5-speed manual gearbox. The full line-up available is:

The Octavia Mingrui was the first model launched by SVW Škoda and has achieved great success in China. The Fabia Jingrui looks set to further the brand’s success.

Cadillac CTS-V launches into the UK

The all-new CTS-V ‘supersaloon’ – the most powerful Cadillac ever – is available from February 2009 and will be priced from £56,495 on-the-road (£58,995 for the automatic transmission model). 2009 G-Power G4 BMW Z4

(from G-Power Press Release) 300 km/h top speed, 0-100 km/h in just 4,9 seconds, 375 hp and an engine’s peak torque of 420 Nm: These are the characteristics of the latest G-POWER development for the BMW Z4 3.0i.

In addition to the increase in power output of 144 hp for the 6- cylinder engine, that normally produces 231 hp, the G-POWER offers a complete tuning program for the Bavarian roadster consisting of: Aerodynamic body kit, light-alloy wheels, suspension modifications, high-performance brake system and exclusive interior components.

G-POWER offers superchargers system for increased power output looking back on 25 years of experience in tuning BMW automobiles. The new G-POWER EVO III supercharger system is an evolution, based on the well known systems for the Z4 2,2 to 3,0 l six- cylinder engines of the BMW Z4. Its core is an ASA T1-12 supercharger from the all new “black-line” edition that features ceramic ball bearings for an increased rpm limit of the charger.

To keep the oil temperatures at level the G-POWER EVO III system is equipped with a thermostat controlled oil cooler, that prevents the ASA supercharger from overheating. 2009 Ford Ranger

Like the leftovers in most bachelors' refrigerators, the 2009 Ford Ranger is past its expiration date. While other compact pickups have grown bigger, more refined and more powerful, the Ranger is still acting like it's 1995. As such, in this age where folks also use pickups as daily drivers and even family vehicles, the hard-working Ranger comes up short in the areas of driving dynamics and passenger room and comfort.

But if you're among the relative few looking for either a stout, economical work truck or a nimble and capable off-roader for weekend adventures, the Ford Ranger certainly has its charms. An available segment-exclusive 7-foot bed allows a lot of stuff to be hauled to work sites, while the Ranger's relatively small size and rugged underpinnings make it ideal for trail-bashing.

As an everyday driver, though, the Ranger doesn't make much of a case for itself. Its more modern rivals offer more powerful engines and larger crew-cab body styles. The latter is key for those who regularly carry backseat passengers, as a crew cab provides a conventional bench seat back there with nearly sedanlike comfort. The Ranger only offers the option of an extended cab with inward-facing jump seats -- cute but they're not safe and not ideal for seating anyone except children for short trips. And sadly, the Ranger also falls behind in terms of safety features and interior design. Stability control and side curtain airbags are not available, while the cabin, though functional, is dated.

So unless you're a hard-core off-roader or a business owner in need of a basic workhorse, there's little reason to consider the 2009 Ford Ranger. Trucks like the Dodge Dakota, Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma are easier and more comfortable to drive on pavement, and all offer roomier cabs with more convenience and safety features.

The XL is sparsely equipped with 15-inch steel wheels, a 60/40 front bench seat (vinyl with regular cab, cloth with SuperCab) and an AM/FM stereo. The XLT adds chrome exterior trim, air-conditioning, a CD/MP3 player and an auxiliary audio jack. These items are optional on the XL. The Sport is similarly equipped but adds unique styling elements (such as a color-keyed grille surround and bumpers), a Class III trailer hitch, satellite radio and different wheels. The FX4 Off-Road adds two-tone paint, 16-inch alloy wheels, all-terrain tires, heavy-duty shocks, a limited-slip rear axle, skid plates, full power accessories, keyless entry, bucket seats with a center console, a leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel and cruise control.

2010 Hyundai Tuscon SUV spied

Hyundai is preparing to give its Tuscon crossover SUV a much needed revamp with several prototypes spied undergoing durability testing in the northern part of Scandinavia.

The design is expected to be radically different from the current model, emulating Hyundai’s recent reputation for impressive design and economy.

While it will be a far cry from the current model, Hyundai decision makers have apparently opted for a more traditional and ‘safe’ design for its new crossover rather than a more modern approach.

Inside sources suggest the new generation Tuscon will be powered exclusively by a range of diesel and petrol four-cylinder engines in both naturally-aspirated and turbocharged guise.

Production for Hyundai’s home market of Korea is expected to begin by the end of the year, with the rest of the world receiving the new Tuscon by mid-2010.

2009 Fiat 500 Cabriolet spied

The camouflage wrapping on at least one Fiat 500 Cabriolet has been conveniently damaged while in transit, giving us our best look yet at the little hatch’s new roof.

These images confirm that the 500 Cabriolet will use a textile roof, featuring a small integrated rear spoiler and high-mount brake light.

This latest addition to the Fiat line-up will use a targa-like roof rather than a completely convertible design, most likely to save costs and weight.

In addition, the roof design also allows Fiat to distance the 500 Cabriolet from competing models such as the Mini or Volkswagen Beetle Convertibles which both use a completely convertible rag-top roof.

SMS 570X Dodge Challenger unveiled

The SMS 570X Dodge Challenger, announced back in May last year, has been unveiled over the week-end. The SMS 570X Dodge Challenger and the SMS 570 feature the SMS Red Butterfly Induction hood and revised drivetrain, suspension, aerodynamics, tires, wheels and interior. the SMS 570X Dodge Challenger is based on the R/T platform and is powered by a 5.7L Hemi engine with a 296 Supercharger that outputs more than 700 hp.

The Cat's Meow painted Jaguar

We like Jaguars. It's hard not to with their rich racing heritage, alluring lines and silky-smooth ride. What you see here, however, is a genuine example of taking things too far.

Now we have no doubt that people have done horrible things to Jaguars over the years, but this was no mid-life paint job. What you're looking at is one of the first E-Types imported into the United States. The third one, in fact, featuring the flat floor that characterized the first 500 Series-1 examples to roll off the assembly line in 1961.

Apparently, the original owner, a Jaguar dealer, was so excited to get one of the first examples that he had it airbrushed with this rather *ahem* unique theme and put it on display in his showroom to attract customers. Well, it probably garnered its fair share of attention, but we doubt many were convinced to buy a new one. Then again, as the old saying goes, there's no such thing as bad publicity.

2010 Audi Q5 hybrid

The Audi Q5 hybrid project has been dancing around a bit, in a one step forward and two steps back kind of rhythm, but Auto Week reports that the Q5 hybrid should debut in February 2010. This is after reports that Audi had cancelled its hybrid plans, or at least postponed them indefinitely.

There are still mixed messages coming from Audi, though, with its powertrain development manager, Wolfgang Hatz, saying that with the advantages, especially in cost, of diesel, any petrol/electric technology will have to be more efficient and convenient in order to compete with diesel.

There’s not much to be gleaned from Hatz’s statements, if only that Audi needs to include hybrid options in its range - a necessary path to follow for manufacturers to compete. The Q5 should provide a better option than the Q7 for hybrid technology in the European market.

Mahindra introduces XYLO SUV

Behold, "The Great Indian Traveling Machine." According to Mahindra, the company's new XYLO has been completely engineered around the customer, and it is nothing short of a frontal assault on the era of sedans. The Indian automaker's new crossover/MPV spells almost certain doom for a project between Renault and M&M to develop a seven seat version of the low-cost Logan. The XYLO and Logan MCV would compete directly, and Mahindra has gone with its own product instead. 57 Mahindra dealerships will be the elite points of sale for this new vehicle that adds luxury items like captain's chairs, dual-zone air-conditioning, and "flight trays" to a vehicular market that requires ruggedness above all.

The XYLO's powertrain packs a 2.5-liter diesel engine that delivers a run to "60 kmph" in 5.8 seconds. 5.8 seconds to 40 miles-per-hour isn't exactly scorching performance, but it's not like traffic in India fosters wide open running, and being comparatively coddled while stuck in New Delhi gridlock strikes us as a serious selling point. As does its 624,500 INR starting price, roughly $12,700 in US dollars. Laugh at it if you will, take xenophobic shots if you must, but Indian automakers are rounding the learning curve quickly.

Wolfsburg/ Detroit, 11 January 2009 - Maximum driving fun with minimal fuel consumption: This is the standard by which Volkswagen is starting the new car year 2009 and is presenting the roadster Concept BlueSport at the North American International Auto Show. “The BlueSport proves to be a compact and passionate car with a clear Volkswagen signature. The car offers pure dynamics with a powerful 180 PS Clean Diesel engine that is combined with the characteristic Volkswagen philosophy of efficiency,” confirmed Volkswagen’s Chairman of the Board, Prof. Martin Winterkorn in Detroit.

The Concept BlueSport is making its appearance at the car show in Detroit with a Flex Silver exterior and orange fabric convertible top. "It is the symbiosis of outstanding technology and timeless Volkswagen design that makes this car an exceptional sports car. Its styling is clear and is reduced to the essentials; the car body itself has a lean and linear structure", explains Volkswagen chief designer Walter de Silva. The interior shows finesse in details and conveys a high level of technological fascination. Immediately visible to the eye is the intuitive and easy to operate touchscreen. Perfectly adapted to the interior are the leather upholstered seats in lightweight construction with their single-piece seatbacks.

Behind the two sport seats of the 3.99 meter long Concept BlueSport, a 132 kW / 180 PS strong Clean Diesel (TDI) with common rail injection and downstream NOx storage catalytic converter delivers dynamic performance. A 6-speed DSG dual clutch transmission – the most economical and agile transmission system in the world – transfers power to the rear wheels. In just 6.6 seconds the sports car is moving at 100 km/h; its top speed is 226 km/h. Also having a positive impact on the car’s low fuel consumption of just 4.3 l/100 km and reduced emissions are two technologies that are part of the so-called Eco mode: an automatic start-stop system and energy regeneration. The RENNTECH 777 Concept Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren - First Look

Just when you thought you'd seen the last of RENNTECH's work on the Mercedes SLR McLaren, the company is back tuning the supercar yet again, unveiling what they call the "777 Concept." The model is being introduced to celebrate the 20th anniversary of RENNTECH, and as such, it shows fantastically the magic RENNTECH-tuned models are capable of.

Seven hundred seventy-seven horsepower; a top speed of more than 210 miles-per-hour; extensive lightweight aerodynamic body components; and a limited production of just 20 units – this is just a sampling of what customers of the RENNTECH 777 concept have to look forward to.

According to Hartmut Feyhl, president of RENNTECH: " Last year, it was a coincidence that we were releasing a new, 695 hp performance package for the 65 series AMG cars at around the same time. We sent out a press release that said 'HP War Not Over'. This year it is the same timing again, and we have something much more extreme to announce for our 20th Anniversary." He adds: "This 777 concept is really an all-new car that makes use of the advanced carbon fiber chassis of the SLR McLaren. It can be described as a street-legal track car, or something closer to what the enthusiasts were hoping for from the SLR, originally - which is more a successor to the McLaren F1."

2009 RM Auctions Automobiles of Arizona

Across town from Barrett-Jackson at the Bitmore Resort, RM Auctions held its "Automobiles of Arizona" auction highlighted by several multi-million dollar cars including a one-of-five 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport and a past Pebble Beach winner 1937 Bugatti 57SC Atalante Coupe (much like the one that was recently found in a barn). Unfortunately, neither car saw a bid that met the reserve price, perhaps an indication that current economic conditions are finally catching up with the high-end collector car market.

The Grand Sport went unsold with a top bid of $5 million, and the Bugatti failed to meet its reserve with a high bid of $4.4 million. A 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France also went unsold with a top bid of $1.8 million. One notable car that did find a new owner was the 1954 Dodge Firearrow III Concept with the hammer falling at $800,000 before auction fees. There were plenty of other beautiful cars that did sell, and you can check out the full list at RM's web site.

The latest vehicle registration numbers verify that the Audi A4 is Germany’s most successful premium automobile. No other model in the premium segment surpassed the 98,714 A4 models registered last year. The Audi A6 also topped its segment with 45,304 registrations. The second generation of the Audi TT design icon was registered 10,630 times in Germany – making it the most successful sports car in Germany in 2008.

AUDI AG was able to expand its market share on the domestic German market to 8.1 percent – an increase of 0.8 percent. In Western Europe, Audi boosted its market share by 0.4 points to 4.8 percent: No other premium brand succeeded in strengthening its market position this significantly. “Audi is presently experiencing stronger growth than any other premium brand in the region – and thanks to new models we will maintain this dynamism,” says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “In a difficult market environment, we want to further expand our market share in Germany and Western Europe.”

The Audi A4 is presently undergoing further upgrading: The top versions of the model line – the S4 Sedan and Avant – are now arriving in Europe’s showrooms. The new A4 Avant was just launched in April 2008. In addition to the fleet award from Auto-Flotte magazine, Audi’s best-selling model has already won countless accolades and has beaten the competition in all relevant comparison tests.

The product improvement of the A6 was launched in September 2008. Also the winner of the fleet award in its class, today the A6 is Germany’s most successful business sedan. With the Audi TTS, the top version of the TT line, Audi introduced the first S model in this class. The Audi TT TDI debuted as the first production sports car powered by a diesel engine.

2009 Huet Brothers HB Special

Apart from your standard options like two-tone colors, LSD and overdrive you can choose different styles of seating, steering wheels, side pannels, and all sorts of customizable items. All cars are handbuild to the specs of the customer.

Ingolstadt Audi is launching the next variant of its top-of-the-line model. With the R8, the brand has established itself at the forefront of high-end sports cars from the very start and now comes the R8 V10. Its 5.2-liter, ten-cylinder engine churns out 386 kW (525 hp) and 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque, which makes for breathtaking performance. With superior Audi technologies such as quattro all-wheel drive, the lightweight aluminum body, the innovative all-LED headlights, and its striking design, the R8 V10 takes pole position against the competition.

The R8 V10 is the result of cumulative know-how from Audis string of Le Mans victories. Its naturally aspirated engine combines racing technology such as dry sump lubrication with FSI gasoline direct injection. The ten-cylinder design is the perfect synthesis for impressive top performance, mighty pulling power, and low weight. Starting in 2009, this engine will also prove its potential on the worlds racetracks in the new R8 racing car Audi is developing for customer teams in conformance with the GT3 rules.

The V10 engine in the production sports car will be almost identical in construction to the one in the racing version. Its displacement is 5,204 cc, at 6,500 rpm it delivers 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque, at 8,000 rpm its power tops out at 386 kW (525 hp).

The specific power output is 100.9 hp per liter of displacement and each hp has to propel only 3.09 kilograms (6.91 lb) of weight, because the Audi R8 V10 in the version with the six-speed manual gearshift weighs only 1,620 kilograms (3571 lb). The engine accounts for 258 of these kilograms (569 lb) thats only 31 kilos (68 lb) more than the V8.

The 5.2-liter powerplant uses direct injection according to the FSI principle developed by Audi. A common rail system injects the fuel into the combustion chambers with up to 120 bar of pressure. Direct injection reduces the susceptibility to knocking and provides a certain amount of cooling through the evaporation of the fuel, which in turn supports a high compression ratio of 12.5:1. This in turn contributes to superior performance and improves fuel economy. The R8 V10 with R tronic gets by on an average of 13.7 liters per 100 km (17.17 US mpg).

Brazilian student presents new Renault Alpine

Between the GT-R and the Z-car, Nissan has a rich history of fine sportscars. However, its French sister company is another story. Since discontinuing the Alpine in 1996, Renault's sporting spirit has had to subside on hot hatches and in its F1 program. Remarkable as they are, the French automaker has been working on bringing back the Alpine sportscar line, with a new model anticipated to debut sometime next year. That's a long way off, if you ask Brazilian design student Marcello Felipe Maggioni. So he's come up with a design of his own for the new Alpine.

The concept is characterized by a chopped-down greenhouse and low-slung headlamps, creating a wedge shape similar in style to the Lexus LF-A. Maggioni based the design around a mid-engine layout, with a homologated street-legal version of the high-revving 2.4-liter V8 from the Renault F1 car. Of course this is well beyond what Renault might actually produce to revive the Alpine nameplate, but if you're going to dream, why not dream big?

Yes, folks, this is the most expensive vehicle for sale in the Hemmings Motor News classifieds (speaking of which, do yourselves a favor and check out the stuff at Hemmings Auto Blogs- which is like mainlining the uncut stuff if you're a car junkie- when you're done here). It lives just a few miles from me, over at Fantasy Junction, and the guys selling it are the same ones who ran the not-quite-as-valuable BMW 633CSi at the Arse Freeze-A-Palooza 24 Hours Of LeMons.

It's one of two Spohn-bodied convertibles made, it's powered by an airplane engine, and it evaded destruction by the RAF, the Eighth Air Force, the Red Army, and- most dangerous of all- the Rust Monster. You can have Maybach SW38 Roadster for $3,5 million! Reasonable price, or would you need to fortify yourself over at Booth Number Two to see it that way?

Maserati 250F is voted the greatest racing car ever

Traffic in London’s Pall Mall came to a halt yesterday when the “world’s greatest racing car” driven by rock legend Nick Mason from Pink Floyd called into the Royal Automobile Club.

The club welcomed the car after thousands of readers from Octane, one of Britain’s top motoring magazines, had voted for the car which had been nominated by Sir Stirling Moss.

Nick Mason said: “The accolade is well deserved. To many the 250F is the archetypal Grand Prix car and, apart from being one of the most beautiful, it is one of the most progressive and forgiving of racing cars to drive. Who can forget what must be the most iconic of motor racing images – Fangio in a full power-slide at the French Grand Prix in 1957, with battle scars evident on the nose?.” He added: “It was a great idea from Octane to get readers to vote for their favourite racing car and I am delighted that the 250F beat its rivals.”

Now 79, Sir Stirling Moss is one of the best-known racers of all- time. He won 194 of the 497 races he entered, including 16 Formula One Grand Prixs. Ben Cussons, Motoring Committee Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club, said: “We are delighted to have the winning car featured outside the Club. The Maserati 250F combines the very best in both automotive design and racing car engineering of the era. Its style and appeal are timeless.”

The editor of Octane, Robert Coucher, commented: “There has been a huge debate over the years as to which car could be described as the Greatest Racing Car but no-one has ever put it to the test. We decided that we would ask over 33,000 magazine readers and more than 100,000 users of the Octane website to vote.” He added: “From the 1950s heyday of Grand Prix racing, the precise, pretty 250F was the weapon of choice for Moss, Fangio, Bira, Salvadori and Hawthorn.”

FPV Open Day back in 2009

Ford Performance Vehicles is set to repeat its Open Day for 2009 much to the delight of blue oval and motorsports fans alike. Eager punters will have the chance to get up close and personal with the entire FPV fleet on March 1 at the brands Campbellfield headquarters.

Along with the current FG range of vehicles, past models will also be on display along with other Ford performance models. Members of the public will also be allowed unprecedented access to the FPV production facility to see how and where the current range is assembled.

In addition to this, Ford Performance Racing will also open the doors to their race workshop with FPR drivers Mark Winterbottom and Steven Richards on hand to answer questions and sign memorabilia. A variety of family activities will also be available, with all proceeds going toward the Guide Dogs Association of Victoria.

The FPV Open Day will be held on Sunday 1st March, 2009 at 33 Glenbarry Road, Campbellfield and runs from 9am until 3pm.

2009 Nissan Murano pricing and specs

Nissan has announced the official pricing and specifications for its second generation Murano SUV. It boasts an evolutionary design over the original Murano launched five years ago, which Nissan claim spawned the cross over genre. Local models will receive a more powerful 3.5-litre V6 engine which develops 191kW of power and 336Nm at 4400rpm. On the combined cycle, the new Murano uses 10.9 litres of petrol per 100kms while producing 259 grams per 100kms of CO2.

“The basic engine architecture hasn’t changed, but attention to fine detail has helped develop an engine that not only delivers more power, but does so using less fuel and producing fewer emissions.” says Nissan Motor Co. (Australia) Managing Director and CEO, Dan Thompson.

The engine is mated to a revised six-speed Xtronic CVT gearbox which has been optimised for quicker and more intuitive shifts. Power is transferred to the ground through an intelligent all mode four-wheel-drive system with electronic 4WD selection and lock mode, including Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Active Brake limited Slip and Traction Control System (TCS).

Standard features include push button start, double stitched leather seat trim, leather steering wheel and gear knob, dual zone climate control, cruise control, six-stacker stereo system with MP3 auxiliary input and six speakers plus steering wheel audio controls. The flagship Ti variant adds front heated seats, a BOSE audio system with 11 speakers including two subwoofers, satellite navigation, reverse parking camera and hands free Bluetooth phone system.

2009 Alfa Romeo 149 spied

The new-generation Alfa Romeo 149 has been spied prowling the streets of Italy, and is due to arrive in showrooms overseas in the next few months. The successor to the current 147 will go head to head with its main rival, the Volkswagen Golf, boasting the usual level of Alfa Romeo flair and style.

These latest spy shots reveal a face similar to the recently revealed MiTo small hatch and 8C sports coupe, bringing the 149 in line with the new style direction of the brand. At 4.30metres long, it comes very close to the former Alfa 156 in size, but is actually based on the platform of the current Fiat Bravo.

The new 149 will be available in five-door guise only, using a series of turbocharged petrol engines ranging between 89kW and 198kW with a V6-powered GTA flagship model. Like the Junior, the new 149 will receive a six-speed manual gearbox with an automatic being available as an option for some engines.

Fisker Karma S Concept

Although sales of the first 2010 Fisker Karma plug-in hybrids won't start until the fourth quarter of 2009, the company is wasting little time exploring potential derivatives of the luxury sports sedan, the first of which is a two-door folding-hardtop concept. Called the Karma S—S for Sunset—and debuting at the 2009 North American International Auto Show alongside the production-ready Karma four-door, the new four-seat convertible is a natural accompaniment for the sedan in Fisker’s environmentally friendly showroom.

As it shares almost everything—except the deleted roof and rear doors, of course—with the original Karma, the S is a technological treat capable of sprinting to 60 mph in about six seconds, traveling up to 50 miles on battery power, and averaging nearly 100 mpg or so, Fisker says, depending of course on how far you drive and how charged the battery was when you started. On shorter trips where the Karma only uses electricity from the battery pack that was charged by plugging it in, it burns no gas and effetively achieves infinite mpg. Its advanced, plug-in hybrid powertrain includes a 260-hp General Motors 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, which serves as a generator to charge the Q-Drive lithium-ion battery system that powers two electric-drive motors integrated with the rear axle. Fisker quotes combined output at a stout 403 hp and almost a pavement-shredding 1000 lb-ft of torque.

Obviously, the biggest difference between the two cars is the S’s transformation into a proper grand-touring car. The chrome-accented power hardtop folds and stows into the trunk, while the lower sides of the body sport sculpted protrusions for the exhaust outlets that exit out the front fenders. While the swooping styling looks terrific on the sedan, the hardtop’s execution is even more attractive; hints of Maserati GranTurismo, Ferrari California, and Mercedes-Benz SL mix with multiple original touches for a stunning coupe silhouette.

We have yet to drive even the original Karma sedan and some details still are being worked out, such as a dealer network. Fisker says the company will announce 40 dealers in 2009, which will be extentions of current luxury outlets, and assures us that the car is not vaporware and that deliveries will begin by late 2009, with the convertible likely following sometime in 2011. And there’s little doubt that the S will see production as long as the sedan lives up to the hype that’s been surrounding it since being unveiled at last year’s Detroit auto show. Pricing for the Karma sedan will start around $87,900, with the production S likely commanding a sizable premium atop that figure.

New 2010 Shelby GT500 based on the 2010 Ford Mustang

With the new 2010 Ford Mustang unveiled about two months ago, it was just a matter of time before we got to see the new Shelby GT500. With its debut scheduled for the Detroit Motor Show next week, the most powerful car to come out of Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) is powered by a supercharged and intercooled 5.4-liter dual overhead cam V8 engine which is expected to deliver 540 hp and 510 ft-lb of torque.

Among the new features the 2010 Shelby GT500 sports are: nww gearbox enhancements which allows the car to deliver improved acceleration performance and better highway fuel efficiency, aggressive new exterior design with new functional details, such as the hood extractor to remove heat from the engine and “Gurney Flap” spoiler to tune rear downforce and a new exclusive interior featuring genuine materials such as real leather in all seats, real aluminum on the instrument panel and Alcantara inserts on the seats and steering wheel.

Built at the Auto Alliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, the 2010 Shelby GT500 will be available in dealerships this spring.

2010 Lexus RX

“The RX is arguably our most iconic vehicle.” Those are the words of Lexus group vice president and general manager Mark Templin, who made the claim at the 2010 Lexus RX’s press preview in Northern California. More symbolic than the IS, the GS, and even the LS, the lux sedan that spearheaded Lexus’s U.S. launch in 1989 and sent the Europeans back to the drawing boards? According to Templin, it’s entirely possible.

2009 Renault New Alpine Concept Design by Marcello Felipe

(from Renault Press Release) Car designed by Marcello Felipe Maggioni - student of the course Design of Mobility - Transportation Design, from Fundaзгo Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP - Sгo Paulo, Brazil). With the primary objective of homage the car that inspired the study and pursue his career in car design, propose the stylization of Renault Alpine GTA V6 Turbo 1987.

Even adjusting the current and future lines of the Renault's brand, maintained the consistency with the original characteristics of the vehicle, as its traditional and significant volume of sports car, with its central rear engine and the large front flashlights near the ground.

In this new proposal, the distributions of the xenon headlamps of the front flashlights remind the tradition of the Alpineґs brand, where in the 60ґs, the "Alpines of Rally" had four headlamps, two originals and two assistants near the center of the car. However, this project has brought new features, such as the front air introductions, above the headlights, and subtle and smooth rear air entry straight to the engine, located in Column C. It is also relevant the application of leds on front and rear flashlights, with three-dimensional leds, which aim to reflect the light in the rear of the vehicle, supported by carbon fiber rod.

Its engine is the R-27 of the Renault F1 team, but adapted to the streets. Its receptacle is treated as a jewel box, where the engine is apparent, being protected by carbon fibers pieces set. A great transparent glass and a large logo of Renault warn everyone that this car has the same DNA of Renault from race tracks.

2009 Audi Sportback Concept

Cadillac Converj Concept

DETROIT – General Motors unveiled a further glimpse at the potential of electric propulsion today, this time in the form of luxury transportation, with the Cadillac Converj Concept. The Cadillac Converj was developed as a well-appointed grand touring coupe with a bold design and a host of interactive technology.

The four-passenger Converj concept is intended to show how GM’s revolutionary electric propulsion technology – called Voltec – can power a luxury coupe with a typically Cadillac “no compromises” design. The technology enables up to 40 miles of gas- and emissions-free electric driving with extended-range capability of hundreds of miles.

Bob Lutz, GM's vice chairman of Global Product Development, said the Converj concept has production substance. “It’s a logical extension of our plan to reinvent the automobile,” he said. “It clearly shows what a Cadillac electric vehicle could look like, and clearly indicates that global luxury customers can have a car that has both strong design and electric propulsion with a total range of hundreds of anxiety-free miles.”

Cadillac’s extended-range electric vehicle (E-REV) concept has a new body style that is an evolution of the brand’s traditional Art and Science design theme. An aggressive, forward-leaning arc profile is the foundation for the sporting stance. And more than a Cadillac in form, Converj is also intended to be a Cadillac in substance, with the premium materials, technology and driving dynamics that are hallmarks of the brand.

Whether in electric or extended-range mode, the Converj is propelled all the time by an electric drive unit. It converts electrical energy from the battery or the engine-generator into mechanical energy to drive the front wheels. It also delivers 273 lb.-ft. (370 Nm) of instant torque, for a quick launch, and 120 kW of power. The top speed is 100 mph.

There is no compromise in vehicle performance in either mode of operation. To enhance the ride feel, the Converj also features GM’s Magnetic Ride Control; and for even greater efficiency, energy during braking is captured and stored in the battery.

2010 Toyota Camry makes its debut at Detroit

Considered by some of us the best-selling passenger car in the United States, the new 2010 Toyota Camry was officially unveiled today at the 2009 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

Scheduled to go on sale in March this year, the 2010 Camry and Camry Hybrid come with a new exterior styling, performance, safety, audio and convenience features. Featuring an upgraded standard powertrain for 2010 the new vehicle comes with a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine equipped with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) capable to deliver 160 hp for Camry, LE and XLE grades.

For the SE grade the powerplant delivers 179 hp while for those who want even more power, the Japanese manufacturer offers a 3.5-liter V6 delivering 268 horsepower. All the three engines can be connected to a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift.

2010 Ford Taurus

Back in 1985, the then-futuristic 1986 Ford Taurus set the world (and Ford’s sales charts) on fire with its spacey yet stylish design and family-friendly mid-size-sedan packaging, even nabbing a spot on our 10Best list. Of course, we all know what happened next: the car was only significantly updated once in two decades, and what was once revolutionary became an irrelevant rental queen. Moving the Taurus name to the large Five Hundred body for 2008 made news, but hardly proved the sales success Ford hoped it might be.

Now with the vastly improved 2010 Fusion holding down the mid-size sedan spot in Ford’s lineup, the Taurus really has no choice but to continue on as a larger and more luxurious vehicle. The Taurus’s extensive redo comes on the heels of the Fusion’s similarly extensive one, and based on what we’ve seen at its debut at the 2009 NAIAS in Detroit, it looks to be a whole lot better than it’s been in a long time.

Befitting the exterior is a more upscale full-size interior. The flowing center stack reminds of the one in the Lincoln MKS and is just as button-ridden as most recent Ford dashes, but at least the graphics are elegant and the assembly quality is convincing. New assembly processes allow more creative color and trim combos.

New features include radar cruise control and collision-warning systems, push-button start, automatic high beams, blind-spot warning with cross-traffic alert, SYNC integrated audio/navigation, SIRIUS Travel Link with a screen that can be personalized with up to 32 pictures, and, most interesting, “Multi-Contour” massaging seats with “Active Motion” cushions that, according to Ford, subtly and continuously move beneath the driver, “stirring a change of muscular activation, helping a driver avoid back pain.” Other tech-y features include MyKey, via which individual keys can be programmed to restrict things like top speed and audio volume, and Ford’s capless fuel-filler system.

2010 Buick LaCrosse

At a GM press conference long enough ago that we don’t remember when or where it was, GM confidently made the then-preposterous assertion that it wanted Buick to become America’s Lexus. We may have laughed and not even bothered to write it down, but we didn’t forget the idea. And in the years since, we’ve been looking for evidence of Buick’s march toward matching the enigmatic Japanese brand’s level of comfort and quality—and maybe even cachet. Could the 2010 LaCrosse, Buick’s new mid-size sedan making its debut at the 2009 NAIAS, be it?

Buick previewed the interior and exterior styling of the LaCrosse last year at the Beijing Auto Show with the handsome Invicta concept, and we must issue credit to Buick designers for sticking near to it for production. The grille is bold but not obnoxious. The lights are aggressive but not scowling. The flowing “spear line” and hood-surface portholes are familiar but not contrived. Particularly pleasing are its low roofline, fastback rear window, and long wheelbase, which impart the LaCrosse with nearly the same stylish proportions of the Invicta. Nice job.

Open the door and you’ll find the sexiest interior in a Buick since perhaps ever. As with the Enclave crossover, Buick has managed to find the common ground between conservative and contemporary interior design and has done so with precious little of the old-lady idiom that has dominated previous Buicks. The shapes are decidedly futuristic without being intimidating, and lots of blue ambient lighting illuminates the various cubbies, door pulls, and trim pieces. And alas, while there is plenty of wood and hand-stitching on the dash and door panels, there is no front bench seat—not even as an option. There’s not even a large-font clock.

There will be three trim levels for the 2010 LaCrosse. The base CX will be powered by a 255-hp, 3.0-liter direct-injection V-6 driving the front wheels through a six-speed automatic. The CXL will be powered by the same engine/transmission combo but have available all-wheel drive, as well as a host of comfort features including leather, dual-zone climate control, fog lamps, and 18-inch wheels. Fuel economy will be about 18 mpg city/27 highway for the 3.0-liter, according to GM.

The top-dog LaCrosse CXS will come with the 3.6-liter version of the direct-injection V-6, making 280 hp and 261 lb-ft of torque—slightly less than this engine makes in GM’s large crossovers—with front-wheel drive, active damping, available 19-inch wheels, and a few additional luxury features like heated and cooled seats. At 17/26 mpg, fuel economy for the 3.6 suffers by only 1 mpg in both city and highway cycles compared with the smaller motor. That’s some good math in our book, although the absence of available all-wheel drive on the CXS is puzzling.

Kia Soul'ster concept opens up for Detroit auto show

Kia rolls out a possible next member of its youth market-targeting Soul family at the Detroit auto show. Taking a page from the roadster playbook, the Soul'ster concept drops a set of doors from the Soul SUV, which goes on sale this spring, shortens the windshield and adds a two-piece removable top. Roll bars offer occupants additional protection not normally found on convertibles, and house a slider track cargo system.Additional visual touches include 19-inch wheels, blue-tinted lamps and chrome dual-tipped exhaust.

Kia promises the four-seat cabin will provide adequate room for both front and rear passengers, with rear occupants benefiting from non-floor-mounted cantilevered seats for optimal legroom. Hauling flexibility comes from a fold-flat front passenger and rear seats, and storage compartments under the rear seats and trunk.

If the Soul'ster is green-lighted for production, a 1.6-liter four-cylinder with roughly 120 hp, connected to a five-speed manual,. would serve as the base powertrain. Premium models would be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, making about 140 hp, paired with the manual or a four-speed automatic gearbox. Kia estimates EPA fuel economy for both engines would at least be 30 mpg.

GM delays 2010 Chevrolet Camaro production start by a month

General Motors is delaying the launch of the Chevrolet Camaro sports car by a month, without explaining why. GM had scheduled the start of production of the redesigned 2010 model in Oshawa, Ontario, for Feb. 16. The date has been pushed back to March 16, Chevrolet spokesman Terry Rhadigan said on Friday.

The Camaro should arrive in dealerships in time for the "spring/summer" selling season, Rhadigan said. "We won't lose any volume, and we'll still hit our targets."GM has received 10,000 advance orders for the car, which offers 300 horsepower on the base model with a V6 engine.

GM is suing Cadence Innovation, a supplier of interior parts that is liquidating, to get machines and parts needed to make the Camaro. GM provided equipment to the supplier to make the Camaro parts, a standard industry practice. GM has said if it didn't get the production equipment back by Jan. 12, the start of Camaro production would be delayed. Rhadigan said the postponement isn't connected to the Cadence dispute.

2009 Pontiac Solstice

With Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac named as GM's "core" North American brands, the Internet is rampant with all sorts of speculation about what General Motors plans to do with its "Excitement Division." Fact is, GM isn't there, yet. GM can't develop a plan until its finances are certain enough to take all its projects from being on hold, and then it has future corporate average fuel economy standards to consider. However, GM has said Pontiac is to become a "specialty" brand, while Saturn and Saab are under strategic review and Hummer is up for sale.

If GM doesn't cancel its Alpha small rear-drive program for a BMW 3 Series-size Cadillac, that platform could support a second-generation Solstice. GM's hope would be to make the Solstice a "world" sports car, like the Mazda Miata, and kind of like the Chevrolet Corvette. If there is a second generation, though, the Solstice is likely to continue in Europe as the Opel GT. This fits in nicely with plans we revealed last month for GM to combine Opel and Buick design.The G6 is older than the Chevy Malibu and Saturn Aura, and its replacement has been put on hold. It's Pontiac's volume car, so simply dropping it from the lineup makes Pontiac a "specialty" brand by definition. Vibe probably has another four years to its lifecycle.

Longer term, Pontiac will need sporty cars on small, lightweight platforms for fuel-efficiency if it's to remain viable. Consider a version of the Chevy Volt with a handling package, a coupe built on the Cruze platform and with more turbo boost, a U.S.-built car off the Delta platform or the Mini-fighter, still apparently in need of a division, that was spotted in late 2007 on GM's drawing boards. Better to update the brand with cars like these.

If GM defines Pontiac's "specialty" as baby-boomer-oriented cars like the G8, the division won't last much longer than that car's lifecycle.

Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SV

The next jewell in the crown from Lamborghini will be the new Murcielago LP670-4 SV. With the name likely to stick, Lamborghini fans will be able to figure out the main characteristics of the most powerful Lamborghini made, which could be launched at the Geneva motor show in March.

While the V12 Murcielago should reach 670hp, it will likely include all wheel drive despite the historic SV name, which could disappoint afficionados. While the overall weight is likely to be similar to the LP 640 sister, the look is likely to change with modifications similar to the 2007 Gallardo Superleggera.

The rear wing should come in varying options and based on the aerodynamics chosen, the maximum speed should range between 337 and 342 km/hr. The price should be about 25 more than the LP640, taking the new Lamborghini Murcielago to about 360,000 euros.

2009 Suzuki Grand Vitara

The Grand Vitara has keyless entry. RFID technology makes me very happy. It is very nice to see that the relatively inexpensive Suzuki has this option. It makes life so easy, especially when carrying groceries or a sleeping five year old. No more fumbling around in my overstuffed pockets for the keys. I just press the button on the door handle and the door unlocks. I get in and turn the ignition. All cars should come with RFID keys standard.

The Grand Vitara has decent ground clearance, 7.4 inches minimum. Normally this would be fine, but like I said Vail has received lots of snow. I think it was the second morning of my review time and we had over a foot in one night. Then the plows came. The guys from the Town of Vail do an amazing job of keeping the streets clear of deep snow. Unfortunately the neighbor up the hill hired a plowing company that just moved the snow into the public right of way.

The Suzuki is very impressive. After the plows clear the roads they sometimes leave a slick thin layer of compacted and very slippery snow. This doesn’t always happen, it depends on the temperature and some other factors. But during the test drive it happened. Many cars couldn’t get up the hill to my house. The Suzuki and its Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) with Traction Control System (TCS) just rode right up. Going down the hill I used Suzuki’s Hill descent control. The Grand Vitara crushed it. I couldn’t be more pleased.

The vehicle holds five adults comfortably. The controls make sense and are very easy to use. The rear cargo space was very easy to access and held plenty of groceries and skis. I can’t really find anything to criticize in the Grand Vitara. I did get a chance to test the Grand Vitara on some dry highway roads. It handled competently. Not too noisy, but nothing special. OK acceleration, but not enough to cause whiplash. So maybe this would be a different review if I was living in Denver and it was summer. I might find the Grand Vitara to be just OK. But it isn’t summer, and I live in Vail.

The Suzuki comes with a great warranty. It has a seven year 100,000 mile, transferable power train warranty. And the best part about the Suzuki is what you get for the price. The Grand Vitara starts at $18,499 and goes up to $26,299 depending on the trim package. The keyless entry is standard, as is the auto on/off headlight, on all trim levels. Suzuki has done a great job packaging the Grand Vitara.

Lotus Evora SC

As expected, new reports indicate more variations of the recently unveiled Lotus Evora are on their way - including a flagship supercharged model. The Toyota-sourced V6 engine has apparently responded well to forced induction, developing 261kW and 393Nm in early testing without any other modifications.

Development time for the supercharged model should be swift, with Lotus having already engineered the braking and cooling performance needed for the addition horsepower into the standard Evora. Anticipating the need for a blown Evora in future, Lotus also designed the engine bay to accommodate a supercharger between the cylinder banks so as not to obstruct rearward visibility - unlike the current Elise SC.

Despite these preparations, an ‘Evora SC’ is still a long way off, likely to arrive by around 2011 with Lotus instead focussing on two other, more promising variants with mainstream appeal.

The first may spark outrage, with Lotus developing a torque-converter automatic version of the Evora specifically for the U.S. market which is due to arrive next year. This will be closely followed by a Roadster version which is due in late 2010, with Lotus keen on developing an electric roof mechanism to maintain the current mainstream packaging of the car.

SLEDGEHAMMER Porsche 997

The SLEDGEHAMMER Porsche 997 is an exercise of testing the limits of the 997's engine, which has the result of 1000 hp. The SLEDGEHAMMER Porsche 997 1000 hp package has been developed by Tym Switzer and his company, Switzer Performance Innovations (SPI) in Oberlin, Ohio. The SLEDGEHAMMER Porsche 997 is able to output 850 all-wheel horsepower, if run on race fuel, and can reach 60 mph in less than 3 seconds. The company also says the car can get from 60 to 130 mph in less than 5 seconds and can run a quarter mile in 9.8 seconds.

The SLEDGEHAMMER Porsche 997 package includes an ECU upgrade, newly developed headers and sport exhaust system, a MONSTER intercooler kit and SPI-massaged GT30R turbos.

A finished Switzer SLEDGEHAMMER is certainly an amazing car. Switzer reports that (despite backing off the throttle early) the first SLEDGEHAMMER (pictured) went almost 195 mph at the Texas mile. Additional performance figures read like the stuff of legend: consistent 0-60 times in the mid 2's, less than 5 seconds to go from 60-130 mph, and 9.8-second quarter mile elapsed times with trap speeds regularly in excess of 145 mph. “With performance like that, these cars really speak for themselves - I have another one on the dyno now, and expect to post the results of those runs shortly.”

BMW 116d with 64mpg

BMW will launch their most fuel efficient and cleanest car ever later this year. The new BMW 116d gets a remarkable 64.2mpg, with CO2 emissions at just 118 grams per kilometer.

Using the same, albeit detuned, diesel four-banger as the 118d and 120d, the new car will be pushed around with 116hp. The engine also produces 192 ft-lb of torque at 1,750 rpm, giving the three-door a 0-62mph time of 10.2 seconds. As a five-door the car reaches 62mph a tenth-of-a-second slower. Top speed for both is 125mph.

Its Band B rating, a ranking based on emissions testing, which means the car will cost its new owner only £35 per year in taxes.

The new BMW 116d three-door starts at £17,605, including taxes and license fees. BMW's five-door version starts at £18,135. Sales for the clean duo begins in March 2009.

Thai-market 2010 Ford Ranger MAX - spied

A cunning photographer has grabbed some shots of what appears to be production versions of the Thailand-bound Ford Ranger Max. While hardware and interior information are scarce at this point, it's clear that some of the details have been toned down from what was shown on the concept (namely the notches on the fender flares and the hood intakes).

That said, the production compact pickup remains essentially true to what we saw at last Fall's Thailand Motor Expo, giving it a bed-load of personality.

Suzuki Kizashi 3 concept

Suzuki, refuting media reports from Japan on Monday, today said it still plans to release a mid-sized sedan based on the Kizashi 3 concept in the United States this year. The Nikkei business daily reported that production plans for the car had been shelved.

“The production version will debut at this year’s New York auto show in April,” said Jeff Holland, spokesman for American Suzuki Motor Corp, “Suzuki will announce when the 2010 sedan will arrive in showrooms at the New York show”.

Suzuki unveiled the Kizashi 3 concept at the New York auto show in March 2008. Kizashi, which means “prelude” in Japanese, is an important addition to Suzuki’s limited vehicle lineup. Dealers in the United States hope it will boost brand interest ahead of the anticipated return of the Swift subcompact in 2010.

Suzuki built a factory in Sagara, Japan, to produce the production version of the mid-sized sedan. Suzuki has not announced what the car will be called when it goes on sale.

Ronaldo Ferrari crash

Cristiano Ronaldo, the Manchester United star, has crashed his Ferrari 599 GTB this morning in an accident near Manchester Airport. Although the car looks very bad, the football star came out unhurt. The unfortunate event took place in a tunnel while Ronaldo was following team mate, Edwin van der Saar, driving a Bentley Continental. The two players were on route to their training session, so alcohol can be ruled out as the cause of the crash.

2009 Nissan GT-R SpecV unveiled

Nissan has officially unveiled its new 2009 GT-R SpecV edition which will make its first public debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon later this week. The new GT-R SpecV promises street-legal race car performance for the everyday enthusiast, a sentiment not to be taken lightly as the flagship of a car which has exceeded all expectations so far. Continuing tradition, the SpecV is available in an exclusive deep purple hero colour - named ‘Ultimate Black Opal’, boasting a series of unique body, interior and performance equipment and modifications.

Exterior features comprise replacement carbon fibre components including the rear spoiler, grille and brake ducts. Inside, the SpecV loses its rear seats in favour of two carbon fibre race buckets seats from Recaro for the driver and front passenger, while the carbon theme continues to rear centre storage box, instrument panel and other trim areas. While official performance figures have not yet been released, the SpecV features a new high gear boost control device which momentarily provides greater torque in the intermediate-to-high speed range for more powerful acceleration.

This same system also allows the engine to operate more efficiently at low speeds, resulting in improved fuel economy. Further modifications include a titanium-coated exhaust system and carbon-ceramic brakes which were spied earlier this year on a prototype at the Nürburgring for ultimate stopping performance. Rather than focussing on raw power, Nissan has instead concentrated on refining the handling of the new SpecV, equipping the car with Nismo-spec forged aluminium wheels as standard to reduce unsprung weight. Together with these lighter wheels and carbon-ceramic brakes, the SpecV also boasts an exclusive new suspension setup and unique high-grip tyres.

2009 Bentley Continental GTC Speed

Now, the introduction of the new GTC range builds on this success with a subtle evolution of its distinctive style and a range of technical and feature enhancements benefiting comfort and customer choice. The appeal of the GTC is further strengthened by the addition of the new 600bhp (610PS) GTC Speed model. It is Bentley’s most powerful convertible ever and inspired by Bentley’s legendary ‘Speed Models’ from the 1920s.

The new GTC models share a fresh frontal appearance. The radiator grille is more upright with a more pronounced square edge, accentuating the Bentley profile, and bolder lower air intake. These latest models are further distinguished by chrome headlamp bezels, the availability of two new exterior paints and a new colour hide.

For the standard GTC, new low-friction dampers provide improved ride comfort. In addition, two significant new options may be specified on both GTC models: lightweight, fade-resistant, carbon-ceramic brakes, the largest production passenger car brakes in the world, and a sophisticated follow-to-stop Adaptive Cruise Control system with long-range radar sensor that monitors traffic ahead and manages throttle and brakes to maintain a driver-selected time gap.

The GTC’s chassis and exceptionally rigid steel body have proved more than capable of coping with the power of the 552bhp (560PS) 6-litre W12 engine. For the new Continental GTC Speed, Bentley’s twin-turbocharged W12 now develops 600bhp (610PS) that delivers true 200 mph (322 km/h) performance, with the roof up, with exhilarating, effortless acceleration. Even with the roof down the GTC Speed can reach 195 mph (312 km/h).

The Continental GTC Speed is visually distinguished by subtle design enhancements which emphasise its higher performance credentials. At the front, the radiator and lower air intake grilles feature a dark tinted matrix as standard. Larger diameter 9.5J x 20-inch, multi-spoke alloy wheels with Bentley-bespoke Pirelli PZero ultra-high performance (UHP) tyres, lowered and uprated suspension, wider twin-rifled exhaust tail pipes and a new boot-mounted lip spoiler that enhances high speed aerodynamics, reinforce the sporting character of the Speed model.

2009 SSC Ultimate Aero

(from SSC Press Release) After holding the "World’s Fastest Production Car" title for the past year, the Shelby SuperCars' Ultimate Aero is receiving several refinements for the 2009 model year. The SSC engineering team equipped the 2009 Ultimate Aero with a 15% increase in horsepower, a revamped front fascia design, and an array of important interior upgrades. The most substantial change is an SSC-designed, 1-piece billet aluminum engine block. A milestone for the limited-production automobile manufacturer, the new block improves structural integrity and oiling capabilities allowing SSC to boost the power output to 1287 horsepower while improving durability.
Armed with the more powerful new engine, the '09 Ultimate Aero will be able to reach world-record speeds of 270 MPH, raising the benchmark for supercars and pushing the limits of current production car technology. In order to accommodate the '09 Ultimate Aero's unique fuel system requirements, SSC turned to American company Aeromotive to develop a flawless system. The aggressive nose is redesigned with enhanced aerodynamics to accommodate the 2009 Ultimate Aero's higher top speed, and carbon fiber louvers on the side intakes draw in an additional 20% of air into the radiators for improved cooling. The improvement in overall performance will widen the already sizeable gap between the Ultimate Aero and its competitors.

The '09 Ultimate Aero also introduces the AeroBrakeTM a rear spoiler system that deploys under braking situations. Finished in carbon fiber, the rear spoilers actuate up an additional 8" when the brake pedal is depressed. The speed of the spoiler actuation is set by the amount of brake pedal pressure. The complete AeroBrakeTM system can be disabled by the push of a button, for town driving or situations where braking and downforce assistance are not necessary.

Rounding out the '09 Ultimate Aero's improvements is a revamped interior. A redesigned dash prominently displays sleek, exposed carbon fiber dash halves and inset air vents. Carbon fiber accents run along the doorsills, surround the new gauge cluster, and continue onto a revised steering column, which includes an analog speedometer and tachometer with a sequential shift light integrated into the tachometer needle. The new center console incorporates a digital temperature control unit and tire pressure monitor along with an Azentek PC base Infotainment unit. The revolutionary Azentek unit offers all the capabilities of a PC and processes SSC's onboard diagnostic software.

2009 Kia Intelligent Stop and Go

Stop/start technology is like a trial membership for hybrids: it lets drivers in on the fuel savings and lower carbon emissions without forcing them to become a card-carrying member of the hybrid brigade. Kia is will be offering buyers just such an opportunity by introducing ISG, or Idle, Stop, and Go (also called Intelligent Stop & Go) on the new cee'd.

The ISG will be available on the 1.4- and 1.6-liter gasoline-engined c'eeds, and unlike other stop/start technology, this ISG shuts the engine down not only when the car is stopped, but when it's moving less than four mph. To engage the ISG while the car is moving, the driver puts the car in neutral and depresses the clutch, the engine is shut down, and he or she will be rewarded with 15% better fuel economy in the urban cycle.

The frugal-ized cee'd also benefits from a lighter five-speed gearbox and low-rolling-resistance tires as standard fitment. Later in 2009, the 1.6-liter diesel c'eed will be offered with ISG technology.

2010 Ford Shelby GT500 - Detroit Show preview

With just days until the 2009 North American International Auto Show opens to auto industry guests, followed by public-access days, automakers continue to tease about upcoming production and concept car unveilings. At the LA Auto Show, we saw the next-generation Ford Mustang introduced. We have since reviewed the 2010 Mustang and can appreciate the basis for the latest treat to escape Ford’s pony corral, the drool-inducing Shelby GT500 variation.

Ford's Special Vehicle Team used the gains made on the 40th anniversary edition Shelby GT500KR "King of the Road" Mustangs as the performance starting point and built from there upon the revised 2010 Mustang platform. Like the KR, the new GT500 boasts 540 horsepower from a supercharged and intercooled 5.4-liter dual overhead cam V-8 engine with a 6,250 rpm redline. The engine is rowed with an upgraded six-speed manual transmission, with revised gearing that sees fifth gear change from .80 to .74 while sixth gear goes from .63 to .50. Translation: the 2010 Shelby GT500 will turn lower engine RPMs in those gears and deliver improved fuel efficiency.

Carroll Shelby says, "Building on what we learned to create the Shelby GT500KR, this new car offers a great combination of power, handling and braking. It is truly a special car that is a great deal of fun to drive."
