Chrysler moves call centers from India to U.S.

Chrysler’s customer satisfaction director says that, in an effort to retain the automaker’s customer base by improving service, it will move its off-shore customer care call centers from India to Michigan and Utah. Chrysler says the transition will take several months but that eventually all customer service calls will be directed to the United States.

Chrysler“In these difficult times, we all must view each customer as a keeper,” Chrysler’s customer satisfaction director, Paul Alcala, wrote on the automaker’s corporate blog.

“As promised by senior management, we are in the process of transitioning the customer assistance center toll-free telephone number from India back to the United States.”

The automaker said that it is opening call centers in Rochester Hills, Michigan, and Salt Lake City. Chrysler didn’t comment on the degree of success it had with its offshore call centers, which were implemented as a cost-savings measure.

Kia VG KND-5 Concept

An image showing the concept version of Kia's upcoming VG luxury sedan has leaked to the web ahead of its unveiling at the Seoul Motor Show next month. Dubbed the KND-5, the concept hints at what we can expect from the company's new Amanti replacement which will officially debut later this year.

Kia VG  KND-5 ConceptCreated to rival other near-luxury sedans such as the Volkswagen Passat CC, the new Kia KND-5 concept boasts an elegant exterior which features upscale design touches such as LED lighting, 20-inch wheels, and a massive panoramic glass roof.

Riding on new front-wheel-drive platform which will be shared with the next generation Hyundai Azera, the concept features a 2845mm (112 inches) wheelbase that should offer noticeably more interior room than the current Amanti. As we have previously reported, speculation seems to suggest the new VG could potentially be outfitted with a Haldex all-wheel drive system but that remains to be seen.

As with the concept, power for the production VG sedan will come from a 3.5-liter V6 Lambda engine but several other engine options are also expected to be available when the sedan goes on sale.

Here’s a quick recipe for a rendering of the Alfa Romeo Milano GTA: start with the spy shots, take a few hints from the teaser image, and then photoshop what was learned over the MiTo GTA photos. While this formula would normally not earn a spot on our page, the result from an Alfa Blog submitter was done strikingly well.

This will be an entry into the luxury small car market, so the Milano’s name competition will be models like the Audi A3 range. 2009 Suzuki Swift

It goes without saying that purchasing a Suzuki Swift+ is not an emotional decision. It's a matter of necessity. And yet, few people are buying it. Less than 2,000 units have found takers in Canada last year, while overall econobox sales amounted to over 150,000 cars. The exterior design is far from the most spectacular in its class, but the Swift+ can comfortably sit two adults and two kids. This lack of interest isn't caused by a less exciting design than a Toyota Yaris or a less sophisticated construction than a Honda Fit. No, it's simply the result of most Canadians not even knowing it exists!

Dealers have all the reasons to put more emphasis on the SX4, even the base model, because it's roomier, higher-performing, more pleasant to drive... and more profitable to sell! The poor success of this subcompact car can also be explained by its seesaw history. The Swift nameplate isn't new; consumers should normally have heard about it as Suzuki has been using it ever since the Swift replaced the Forsa in 1989.

The thing is, the Swift+ is not a Swift. It's not the same Suzuki-designed model that's currently all the rage in Asia and Europe. The car we have here since 2004 is actually manufactured at the GM-DAT (formerly Daewoo) plant in Bupyong, Korea. Plus, it shares basically the same design with the Chevrolet Aveo5 and Pontiac G3 Wave Hatchback. In 2008, GM Canada sold over 8,000 of these, not to mention the 11,000 copies of the sedan variant, which is exclusive to GM.

An unfortunate series of events and coincidences has kept the "real" Swift from Canadian showrooms: the alliance between Suzuki and GM (which ended last November), the purchase of Daewoo by GM in 2002 and the expansionist designs of Suzuki in Europe which have monopolized its production capacity. That's how a Korean-born subcompact found its way under the wing of Suzuki in Canada -- not in the U.S. The American branch rejected the Swift+ in 2004, arguing that their customers would find no interest in that model (at least back then!).

Despite marginal sales volumes, the Suzuki Swift+ gets a slight makeover for 2009 -- just like its twins, by the way. A new, sharper grille that's specific to each one, redesigned headlights and taillights, a reshaped hood and front fenders that now integrate fake air vents are among the upgrades that define the new model. The dashboard gets a fresh look and the steering wheel is connected to a precise, nicely-calibrated steering.

The 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks add versatility to the interior of the Swift+, which is great since they allow owners to adjust the size of the cargo area based on their needs. Folding all seatbacks increases cargo capacity from a meager 200 liters (the smallest of all econoboxes on the market, including the smart fortwo) to a whopping 1,190 liters, which is enough to load big items. In comparison, the Fit offers 25-percent more room for your luggage. That said, the Yaris is 36-percent less accommodating than the Swift+.

That seems like fair value for your money, yes. But if you want more than that you may have to weigh the considerations of waiting for the R8 V10 version, which will come with a 5.2 liter FSI with 525 hp and will be priced at 142,400 euros, versus the 4.2 V8 FSI which costs 109,100.

Don’t feel like waiting? Spoiled and rich and used to getting everything you want right away? Okay, fine. For 32,500 euros, you can pump up the volume on this beast to 530 hp by means of a Wheelsandmore compressor. For an additional 13,998 euros, Wheelsandmore will also refine the braking system with 8-piston calipers at the front, 6-piston ones at the back, and high-performance pads. Just bring 14 one thousand-euro notes and Wheelsandmore promises they have plenty of two euro coins on hand for your change. Now, that is service.

And there are even more goodies available - an aluminum race suspension for 3,999 euros or a 8,949-euro hydraulic lift full-race suspension that permits the front and rear axles to be raised 30mm, a 5,500 euro front lip spoiler and rear diffuser both made of carbon fiber, two sets of 20-inch alloy wheels for 9,250 and 9,800 euros, respectively, a handmade rear silencer with valve system for 4,800 euros (an extra 900 to have it remote controlled).

Agila B by Steinmetz

While global automakers are still desperately looking for new ways to cope with the economic recession, tuning companies are pretty busy improving their last-generation models and bringing a couple of new functions to consumers seeking more power and enhanced appearance. The aftermarket package for Agila B created by the folks over at Steinmetz is the best example you can get, as the tuner used the standard 1.2i engine configuration to make modifications in specific areas.

Agila B by SteinmetzThe first thing you’ll notice when looking at the car is surely the 17-inch 4-hole 15-spoke alloy wheels ST8 fitted with 195/40 R17 tires. Obviously, these wheels have a major contribution to improving handling and control at high speeds. And because we're talking about handling, Steinmetz lowered the body by 30 mm, creating a more aggressive stance and improving maneuverability in the same time.

Interiors are being offered with a wider array of improvements, starting with the new aluminum gear knob exclusively included in Steinmetz’s aftermarket package. The top half of the shift stick is styled in chrome aluminum, while the lower half in black, the company explained in a statement for the press. A 4-piece floor mat set with Steinmetz stainless steel logo is also included in the package.

The last-generation Agila boasts a total of three engine variants, 1.3 CDTI ecoFLEX, 1.0 ecoFLEX and the aforementioned 1.2-liter version used by the tuner in the aftermarket package. This particular unit delivers a total of 86 horsepower at 5500 and 84 lb-ft of torque at 4400 rpm. The standard model accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 12.3 seconds, while maximum speed goes as much as 109 mph (175 km/h).

Tata Nano test drives in India – Video

Wow, is about all I can say to this video. The guys from Autocar have given the Tata Nano about the most important endorsement it could probably have, and we could really be seeing a modern revolution, which is something we haven’t seen much of late. Despite its unbelievable price - about 1,500 euros, the Tata Nano drives and feels like a real car. And the most important thing is that the designers have done exactly what they needed to do; design a cheap and economical small car that will revolutionise motoring in India. The 650 cc and 110 km/hr top speed are nothing special, and there’s no power steering (it’s starting to sound like the car I drive!). But everything is in its place and there’s no fancy additions to “disenfranchise” the scooter owners who are the one’s likely to take on this proposition. Watch the video, it’s worth it.

Opel Astra

Opel Astra has always been a great competitor against VW Golf, but the next generation is expected to be even fiercer in its intentions, both because of the slow-selling market and for the fact Opel seems to be in a great moment (just check out how gorgeous and good the new Insignia is).

Opel AstraThe next generation Astra was supposed to be presented in Geneva. It wasn’t, but will be, and very soon, according to these leaked images. Although they are in very low resolution, they give us a good idea of what the car has become. Pictures only give us the five door version, but you can expect a three-door, a station wagon and a convertible.

We would also bet on a minivan and a sedan, but there are no rumours in the market about these versions, unless this car was destined to emerging markets. For those models, GM’s vehicle will be Cruze, under all badges necessary (Daewoo, Chevrolet and even Buick).

HAMANN Imperator Widebody based on Bentley Continental GT Speed

Brace yourselves: it's another body kit for the Bentley Continental GT. It's called HAMANN Imperator Widebody. As a follow-up to the performance upgrades designed for the Bentley Continental GT and GT Speed, the tuner's comprehensive appearance upgrade is now available. The sixteen-piece body kit includes a revised front bumper with the latest in LED daytime running light fashion, side skirts and fender flares with vents, and a new rear bumper, diffuser and spoiler. A choice of Hamann-designed wheels is available; 21 x 10.5 inch, or a set of even larger 22-inchers that are 10.5 inches wide at the front and 11 at the rear.

Torque is up to 553 lb-ft. The Continental GT Speed benefits as well, jumping to 650 horses and 612 lb-ft. A revised control unit for the Bentley's air suspension is part of the package as well, allowing the Imperator to be lowered 30mm up front and 20mm at the rear for a more race-ready look.

The interior is offered with clear-coated carbon fiber trim, of course, as well as aluminum pedals and a sport steering wheel.

Mercedes-Benz F-Cell Roadster

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the F-CELL Roadster project. The F-CELL Roadster is controlled with drive-by-wire technology, and a joystick takes the place of a conventional steering wheel. The vehicle is powered by a 1.2 kW emission-free fuel cell system located at the rear. It could reach a top speed of 25 km/h and achieve an operating range of up to 350 km(217 mile).

BMW X6 M to be unveiled at New York Auto Show

BMW X6 M has been confirmed to debut at the New York Auto Show next month. One of sources confirmed this a couple of weeks ago along with the fact that the “twin brother” BMW X5 M will be present as well.

BMW X6 MToday, Motor Trend received official confirmation from BMW, but only regarding the X6 M. With the official unveiling scheduled for the first week in April, I don’t see any reason why both would not present together at the NYC Auto Show.

The X M models are powered by a tuned up V8 4.4 liter Twin Scroll Twin Turbo engine, outputting 550 horsepower. The M SAVs will feature an improved all-wheel-drive system, but in order to reflect the true M performance, it will offer a more rear-concentrated approach.

Technology from the 7 Series, like the Head Up Display or Adaptive Drive will be standard on the BMW X5 M and X6 M.

Hyundai BLUE-WILL hybrid concept

Hyundai is continuing its shock and awe campaign on the automotive industry, having revealed the first official photos of its new plug-in hybrid concept carBLUE-WILL. Due to be unveiled at the Seoul Motor Show, BLUE-WILL will boast a host of innovative technologies designed to return excellent fuel economy and lessen its impact on the environment.

Hyundai BLUE-WILL hybrid concept-1Hyundai BLUE-WILL hybrid concept-2It utilizes a range of recycled materials in its construction, with PET soft drink bottles used to make the material for the headlamp bezels, while some interior plastics and the engine cover have been forged from materials derived from plant extracts rather than fossil fuels and are bio-degradable.

The concept is powered by an all-aluminium direct injection 1.6-litre petrol engine which is mated to a CVT transmission and a 100kw electric motor which is at the heart of Hyundai’s parallel hybrid drive architecture.

The Lithium Ion Polymer battery pack is bundled with the fuel tank underneath the rear seat to maximize luggage space, with the glass area integrating dye-sensitized solar cells which can generate power for the batteries from the sun without impeding visibility.

Hyundai will be the first automaker in the world to apply Lithium Ion Polymer in a mass production vehicle when the Elantra LPI Hybrid goes on sale in Korea in July this year.

Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid

Japanese automaker Mazda proudly announced today that it started commercial leasing of the Premacy Hydrogen RE hybrid, the company's second hydrogen rotary engine model that reaches the market. The first units will be delivered to government authorities in companies involved in the energy sector in 2009, Mazda said in a statement, with the first units already
registered at the Hiroshima branch of the Chugoku District Transport Bureau on March 25.

Mazda Premacy Hydrogen RE HybridMazda says specification of this special model were approved by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) on March 5, 2009, with the Japanese automaker becoming the first manufacturer to commence commercial leasing of a hydrogen hybrid car.

In essence, Mazda's Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid is a hydrogen hybrid model that relies on the company's hydrogen rotary assembly and on an electric unit for reduced emissions and fuel consumption. The hybrid system is said to provide a hydrogen fuel range of up to 200 kilometers (124 miles) plus a maximum output of 110 kW (147 horsepower).

Several other technologies aimed at improving fuel efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions are also available, including a dual-fuel system that lets the driver switch to gasoline when hydrogen is unavailable. Most interior parts are made from Mazda’s plant-derived Biotechmaterials, the company said in a statement.

Progress can not be stopped, especially when it is dashing forward in such a broad and powerful way. The automobile refiner JE DESIGN converts the current Porsche Cayenne (Type 957) into the PROGRESSOR and shows which potential can be release from the serial Porsche.

This impression is already confirmed by a first glance at the front skirt with its LED daylight running lights, the side skirt and the rear skirt extension. At the front, voracious air inlets and fierce headlamp masks confirm that the PROGRESSOR is not only up for games.

The PROGRESSOR does not only pretend to be broader, it really grew. The track width at the front axle extended by enormous 60 millimetres, and even by 80 millimetres at the back axle. This goes hand in hand with extended wings, adapted side skirts with integrated LED door sill lamps and the robust wheels SUV-Select. These cast wheels in one piece measure 10x22 inches and are equipped with high performance tyres sized 295/30 R22 XL. JE DESIGN has engineered the wheels with its classic five-spike design especially for king-sized automobiles like the Cayenne. The wheels with the graphite gloss finish perfectly match the white racing colour varnish of the PROGRESSOR.

The sportive appearance is not only accentuated by the additional width, but also by the additional depth of the car. With its reduced sport springs, an electronic lowering kit or a version 3 coilover, the PROGRESSOR can be lowered between 35 and 70 millimetres. Therefore, the sportive appearance is also honoured by the driving dynamics.

The rear exterior is by no means docile at all. The perfectly adjusted rear skirt extension sets a dominant mark with its six integrated LED lights and its diffuser look. Anyway, most motorists only see the four-pipe exhaust system of the PROGRESSOR which protrudes through the rear skirt with its chromed oval pipes.

First Chevrolet Camaro off the line – Video

General Motors has pieced together a short clip of the construction and delivery of the very first Chevrolet Camaro which was purchased by the CEO of Hendrick Motorsports, Rick Hendrick.
While it would be nice to say this was filmed right here in Australia, in reality the manufacturing stage has been assigned to GM’s Oshawa Plant in Ontario, Canada.

Vizualtech has given us impressive 3D renderings of different vehicles in the past like the Dodge Challenger, Mercury Cougar and the Volvo C30 Racer. Now designer Bo Zolland had created a rendering of a Pickup concept that fuses classic Volvo design with an El Camino body style.

Volkswagen Golf GTI in Europe

After making its first public debut in concept form at the Paris Motor Show, Volkswagen has officially unveiled the production version of its new generation Golf GTI MkVI flagship. Building upon the dynamics and driver involvement which defined the spirit of its predecessors, the new model is faster, sharper and more powerful than any standard GTI before it. At its core is an advanced new 2.0-litre TSI engine producing 154kW and peak torque of 279Nm from just 1,700rpm, linked to either a six-speed manual or DSG gearbox.

Despite its slightly higher output compared to its predecessor, the new GTI is assured maximum traction with the addition of a new XDS electronically controlled differential as standard. This is coupled with new springs and dampers unique to the GTI which also lowers the ride height by 22mm at the front and 15mm at the rear, as well as strut-type front and multi-link rear suspension joined by new anti-roll bars to provide sharper responses.

Volkswagen’s Adaptive Chassis Control system (ACC) is also offered for the first time on the GTI, incorporating pneumatically controlled damper units which allow the driver to choose from normal, comfort or sport modes. As with previous generations, the flagship GTI variant boasts an aggressive new look, with a new front bumper which integrates a deep honeycomb airdam flanked by vertical foglights, a rear diffuser and an all-new exhaust system with dual outlets. A subtle rear wing, smoked rear lenses and red brake calipers surrounded by 17-inch ‘Monza’ alloy wheels tie the look of the exterior together.

Inside the red and black tartan sports seats with red stitching make a return, along with a flat-bottomed GTI multifunction steering wheel and 2Zone electronic climate control. Its inherited Golf DNA also means the new GTI boasts class-leading levels of safety with ABS, ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) and seven airbags, including for the first time a knee airbag, all as standard. Despite the R32 no longer forming part of the new generation Golf line-up, the new GTI may not be able to claim the flagship title for much longer with an even more potent GTI-R model rumoured to be in development.

Renault Sandero GT

The French brand has released the Renault Sandero GT in Colombia. Don't get all excited! The "GT" has nothing to do with extra performance. The Renault Sandero GT is just a styling package for the French economic-class model, which aims to give it a more aggressive look.

The Renault Sandero GT kit includes a new front and rear bumper, front grille and side skirts. The Renault Sandero GT also comes with a little bling/chrome on the exhaust tip and a rear diffuser.

For the interior, the Renault Sandero GT offers a Kenwood sound system with an USB port.

The Renault Sandero GT price in Colombia is the equivalent of around 11,500 Euros.

Maserati GranTurismo S – video

Mercedes SLK spied

If these pics were anything to go by, this Mercedes SLK would be off to the panel beaters, but instead these spy shots show some heavy camouflage to protect the SLK from spying eyes. No definite news is available as to the date of its presentation, though some sources have been talking the end of 2012.

The nose looks to dip less and the headlights look sharper in design, conforming with recent developments in Mercedes style. Other changes are the LED lights, and new rear vision mirrors.

The engine range appears to provide some tantalising news, with talk of the new turbo charged four-cylinder, although after rumours of the powerful 3.5 litre V6 twin turbo, all eyes are on the AMG version. It’s possible that the next generation SLK will sit somewhere between the 6.2 litre V8 aspirated engine, and the next, smaller, turbo models.

It is Rinspeed’s answer to the fast changing requirements of the market and sociopolitical perception about the tuning industry.’ Rinspeed boss Frank M. Rinderknecht hits the nail on the head: “Just like the auto industry has to adjust to the demands of a new era, tuners have to look for new ways to do business as well.” The Swiss automobile visionary Rinderknecht, who has his roots in the tuning business, observes a change in people’s attitude, at least in the western world: “We need an intelligent use of our fossil resources, especially of our energy".

Rinspeed’s creation is based on the Abarth version of the Fiat 500. Its name ‘E2’ signals the fact that the nimble little Italian car is equipped with two different power levels: The 60-hp ‘Commuting’ level is more than sufficient to move along with city traffic while saving energy. In this mode the ‘E2’ consumes just some four liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. Outside the city, the ‘Highway’ mode provides driving fun and added power for fast and safe passing. In ‘Highway’ mode the engine produces 160 lively horsepower and transforms the Italian flea into a venerable hornet. Fuel consumption in ‘Highway’ mode is in the neighborhood of seven liters per 100 kilometers. The energy management system of the ‘E2’ is controlled by a small button in the cockpit that affects the engine electronics.

Rinderknecht believes he is on the right path with his new interpretation of automobile customizing. With the ‘E2’ and his concept car ‘iChange,’ which is much further removed from production, he wants to nudge the automotive as well as the tuning industries in a new direction, to leave well trodden paths and creatively look for new ones: “I don’t believe too much in eco tuning. Many drivers are not willing to miss out on driving fun and don’t want to drive a something that announces to the world that they do without. But the number of people who want to use our energy supply responsibly not in the least because they want to protect our environment will grow quickly.”

Up front is a new replacement front fascia that features larger carbon fiber air intakes for the radiators and elimination of the fog lights like the factory 997 GT2. A removable dry carbon fiber front lower spoiler adds additional down force to the front end while protecting the front bumper from any steep inclines or road hazards. The principal challenge of this front bumper was maximize weight savings . This was achieved by eliminating the fog lights, and replacing the factory plastic air ducts and hardware with carbon fiber ducting as a molded single component of the front bumper.

The V-RT rear bumper is also designed to offer the 997 Turbo with a wider stance with enlarged side intercooler extraction vents that house a replacement dry carbon fiber shroud that is approximately 35% larger for improved airflow through the intercoolers. The rear bumper also features a new molded carbon fiber rear diffuser with integrated twin aero fins that encompass the quad sport exhaust tips.

The Porsche V-RT rear end is completed with a carbon composite rear deck lid/engine cover with twin ram air scoops that feed air into the engine bay and air intake for maximum airflow and cooling. Additionally a carbon fiber wing blade enhances the final appearance while increasing down force to the rear of the vehicle at high speeds.

The V-306 twin 7 spoke 3-piece forged wheels shown are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires. The wheels feature a race-inspired center mesh design in 20x8.5J and 20x12J that are also available in 19 inch configurations with many personalized finish options.

2010 Roush Mustang 427R

Recession? Global Warming? Future gas-price worries? Bah. This is turning out to be some sort of National Musclecar Month (stay tuned for more Camaro/Mustang/Challenger news coming very soon), and Jack Roush is striking while the iron is hot. Today, Roush Performance unveiled its fifth-generation Mustang performance car, the 2010 427R, at its Livonia, Michigan, factory in suburban Detroit.

2010 Roush Mustang 427R-12010 Roush Mustang 427R-2As before, the Roush Performance 427R package includes enhanced styling, suspension, and engine-performance upgrades. In terms of styling, the front and rear fascias are more aggressively sculpted, with a jutting front splitter and simulated venturi air exhausters in back. Side skirt and louvered quarter windows, chromed 18-in. Roush wheels, a three-piece rear spoiler, and badging inside and out complete the package (which will be offered by itself as a Stage I package for $6852).

Chassis upgrades revised spring and damper rates, new anti-roll bars, revised rear-suspension geometry to combat wheelhop (using unique upper trailing links, mounting brackets, and bushings), new jounce bumpers and bushings. (An $8226 Stage II package will buy the appearance and chassis mods.) The 427R stripes and decals accompany a revised Roots-type supercharger and intercooler plus other powertrain upgrades that bring the stock 4.6L SOHC three-valve motor up to 435 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. And what's more, they do so WITHOUT incurring a gas-guzzler penalty as the 2009 427R did. That savings helps bring the 427R package price in at just $15,056 ($43,071 out the door, including the base Mustang GT).

How did they manage to improve performance while trimming overall emissions by 38% and boosting fuel economy by about 10% (firm numbers are not yet available but there will be no guzzler tax)? According to powertrain honcho Erin Dmytrow, more efficient breathing and intercooling are key. The base car's cold-air induction (breathing from ahead of all the heat exchangers) is retained, opening into a freer-flowing air box and intake manifold.

And while the previous intercooler radiator was of a double-core design down in the lower fascia opening, the new one uses a single core that's nearly the same height as the engine radiator. Overall coolant capacity for the dedicated intercooler circuit is up over 25%, and charge-air temperatures are said to be dramatically lower. The supercharger is a 1.5L Roots-type using the familiar three-lobe impellers to develop 5.5psi max boost (any more wouldn't be safe without reducing the stock engine's compression ratio).

Subaru Liberty GT spec.B R - Limited Edition

Subaru is offering a special edition version of its flagship turbocharged Liberty GT spec.B sedan and wagon for a limited time, featuring an ochre leather trim interior as standard.

Subaru Liberty GT spec.B R Officially named the Liberty GT spec.B R, it will be limited to just 50 examples nationwide, all boasting a black exterior finish with the choice of a six-speed manual or five-speed SPORTSHIFT automatic transmission.

These special edition models also feature a subtle black honeycomb grille, which distinguishes them externally from the standard versions.

Nick Senior, Managing Director, Subaru Australia, said: “Subaru’s performance special editions are renowned for their retained value and with just 50 of these Liberty GT spec.B Rs available, we anticipate significant interest.”

Seat Ibiza ST

During the brand's annual meeting, Erich Schmitt, President of SEAT, announced that third variant of the new Ibiza - the Seat Ibiza ST - will be launched next year.

The Seat Ibiza ST will be powered by either one of these engines: 1.9 TDI with 105 hp, 1.6 16V with 105 hp, 1.4 16V with 85 hp or 1.2 12V with 70 hp.

Erich Schmitt also said the Seat Ibiza ST will be produced in Martorell, but did not disclose any further details.

We're wondering if the Seat Ibiza ST will also have a Cupra version.

Think electric-powered vehicle enters Netherlands market

Electric vehicle manufacturer Think has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to deliver up to 500 THINK city electric-powered vehicles this year to ElmoNet, a subsidiary of Mobility Service Netherlands. With the Dutch Parliament calling for the rapid introduction of EVs (electric vehicles), the Minister of Transport, Mr. Camiel Eurlings, earlier this year announced a fund of 10 million Euros to be made available to support the large scale, early introduction of electric mobility.

Think electric-powered vehicle “Ambitious visions and concrete measures are required to make the Netherlands the most important experimental garden for electric mobility” says Marjan Minnesma, Director of Urgenda. Urgenda is an active foundation that aims to transform the Netherlands into a model for sustainable development.

Richard Waitz, Think’s Sales Director, is very optimistic about the rapidly growing opportunities in the Dutch market, and welcomed this initiative by the Dutch Parliament. "The shift to zero emission clean technology vehicles is a paradigm shift, where Government support is creating an important basis for the first larger scale fleet applications" says Waitz. “Think is moving quickly to take advantage of these programs in the Netherlands and all across Europe”.

THINK city is a modern, two seater urban car which has a top speed of 100 km/h (65 mph). It accelerates from zero to 50 km/h (30 mph) in just 6.5 seconds and 80 km/h (50 mph) in 16 seconds. With zero local emissions and an energy efficiency three times that of a traditional combustion engine car, it is a car for the environment. It can travel for 180 km (112 miles) in city driving on a fully charged battery.

The Cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam have already expressed keen interest to introduce the TH!NK city electric car in their region. Think delivered the first TH!NK city EVs to ElmoNet in February, and will continue to deliver vehicles according to the MOU in 2009.

2010 Lincoln MKZ Pricing

Audi Q3 to be built at Seat facilities in Spain

The Audi Q3 is one of the most anticipated car models of the next few months, but it has been revealed that it will not be assemble at the German facilities of the VAG group. Audi has announced that the new Q3 SUV will, in fact, be built at the Seat factory in Martorell, Spain.

The choice to build the Q3 in Spain should save the jobs of 13,000 people at the Martorell factory, and comes after Spain’s industry minister specifically request help from the company. In return, Audi will receive public funds from the Spanish government of up to 112 million euros, sufficient to adapt the assembly chain to the Q3.

Toyota to revive MR2 as Prius Coupe

Toyota executive vice president Masatami Takimoto has reportedly confirmed the brand is set to revive the MR2 nameplate as a hybrid performance coupe to rival Honda’s upcoming CR-Z.

ToyotaThe hybrid MR2 will swap its traditional roadster shape in favour of a coupe design - effectively becoming a more exciting two-door version of the Prius.

The new hybrid would feature a specially developed version of the Prius hybrid powertrain, adapted for performance, economy and low emissions coupled with a paddleshift transmission.

“We are aware of the fondness with which the MR2 is held in the UK and Europe, and are developing a small hybrid sports car.” said Mr Takimoto speaking with Auto Express.

“We have set a tough price point, as it will be easier to sell if it is affordable. It has to be fun to drive, too, which means the hybrid set-up must be different to the Prius’, with greater responsiveness.”

BMW M3 after crash – Video

The event in the video was shot on the Algarve track on a very unfortunate day for a BMW M3. The more or less inexperienced driver of this BMW M3 looses control of its car in a curve, hits the dirt, and then the side of the track. Luckily, after the crash, the BMW M3 doesn't look bad at all. We guess the driver than thought: "Damn it! I've got to do something about it!". He slammed the gas pedal while still in the dirt and hit the underside of the car as hard as he could against the tarmac. If the BMW M3 wasn't hurt in the crash, after this little trick, judging from the horrible noise, it's definitely scrap material.

2010 Mercedes E-Class

"It is not until you get behind the wheel of the new E-Class that much of what has been spruiked about the new car begins to ring true. The interior styling is richer, closer to an S-Class than a C-Class as had been the case in the previous generation. The lines are straighter, the surfaces flatter and more functional yet the ambiance retains a richness from the quality of materials used and precision of the layout. The seats are comfortable - spacious and supportive and with the extra padding of the restyled contruction evident immediately.

2010 Mercedes E-Class All very nice, but fire up the new 3.0-litre V6 diesel and the experience takes on a different level of appreciation. This is an engine that Mercedes can be justly proud of. Its strength is that the 540Nm - or a greater proportion of it - is ready for instant action from anything above idle. Tap the accelerator and go, jump on it and go harder - and all without the least hint of harshness. The balance between the engine, the seven-speed automatic gearbox and the active dynamics of the car's suspension and steering is a treat.

The direct-steer variable ratio steering never descends into vagueness, something that can not be said of all such systems and whether punting through twisting mountain roads or sruising along an open motorway the feeling is one of directness and precision.

Ride quality is what you would expect from this level of automobile - no more, no less. The active damping works well, seamlessly adjusting from comfort on a gentle cruise to a more sporting stiffness when pushed. A unexpected delight is how little drive enjoyment is given away by dropping from the hero engine to either of the new-generation four-cylinder offerings.

While the 2.1-litre direct injection turbocharged E250 CGI is an absolute sweetie with its 150kW and 310Nm it is the equivalent diesel, the E250 CDI, that will have you out of the car and counting the cylinders. With 150kW and a thumping 500Nm of torque squeezed out of the four cylinders by the twin-stage turbocharger this one is destined to be a star. Delivery is a little more peaky than the V6 with the torque dropping away around 600rpm earlier at 1800rpm, but you would be really hard to please if it didn't bring a smile to your face. And if there is any need to seal the deal, a combined fuel efficiency rating of 5.3L/100km should be just the ticket."

2009 MINI Cooper D

It seems too good to be true, but from just $33,750 the MINI Copper D, which goes on sale in Australia from May this year, will offer buyers a viable and more affordable alternative to the high priced Hybrids. When you run the numbers, that’s 240-260Nm, 0-100km/h in 9.9 seconds and over 1,000kms on a single tank of diesel, can the MINI factory in Oxford, actually build enough MINI D’s to supply what should be a runaway success.

2009 MINI Cooper D-12009 MINI Cooper D-2You just don’t expect to be able to purchase such an iconic car such as a MINI for near enough to $33,000, which will not only take the title of the fastest accelerating diesel in its capacity class in Australia, but will run away with Australia’s lowest CO2 emitting car and Australia’s most fuel efficient car, to boot. So, all this greenery, without the need to sacrifice either, automotive style or performance. Like I said, it’s too good to be true, there must be a catch.

The MINI D is without question, a highly technical bit of kit. It’s 1.6-litre turbocharged direct-injection four cylinder engine is boosted by variable turbine geometry, which ensures a low boost threshold or simply, minimal turbo lag. Not only that, the level of turbo boost increases at higher speeds to provide solid torque right through to the red line. It’s not Euro 5 but the MINI D is fitted with a particulates filter, which means emissions are very low and comply with the Euro 4 standards. Standard fitment will be MINI’s svelte six-speed gearbox, but you can option a six-speed automatic transmission for $2,350.

MINI Cooper D is also about “MINIMALISM” which is MINI’s take on BMW EfficientDynamics, and that includes features such as Auto Start Stop, which means when you pull up at a red light or are motionless in peak hour traffic, the engine switches off rather than idling and wasting fuel. Of course, the moment you depress the clutch, the engine starts again. And some technology from BMW’s M3 in the form of Brake Energy Regeneration, meaning that the car’s battery is charging whenever the driver brakes or the car is coasting in traffic.

It’s hard to know when to shift gears precisely so that you’re not wasting fuel unnecessarily. The MINI D takes care of that for you, with its Shift Point Display, which works out the most economical gear based on speed and acceleration and prompts the driver to shift up or down via arrows in the rev counter. The car also features advanced aerodynamics via a streamlined underbody panel, which optimises downforce and thereby saves energy.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible Spied

Is what we you're seeing in these spy photographs the new Mercedes-Benz CLK Cabriolet? Well, yes and no. Yes because it will replace the drop-top CLK in Merc's lineup and no because, like its recently revealed coupe sibling, it will get the E-Class designation. Scooped here with minimum camouflage, the all-new E-Class Convertible follows in the footsteps of the Audi A5 Cabriolet retaining its predecessor's conventional canvas rooftop.

Other than the removal of the top and the slightly modified rear-end design, the E-Class Convertible is identical to its coupe sibling. This means that it will be offered with the same engine lineup. Depending on the market, the range will include four gasoline engines: a 1.8-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with for the E250 CGi, a 3.5-liter V6 with 292HP for the E350 CGI, a 5.5-liter V8 with 388HP for the E500 and a 525HP 6.2-liter V8 for the top-of-the-line AMG version.

These units will be joined by two diesels, a 204HP 2.2-liter twin-turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the E250 CDi and a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 with 231-horsepower in the E350 CDi.

According to sources, the E-Class Convertible will break cover at the forthcoming Frankfurt Auto Show this September with sales following in mainland Europe towards the end of the year and other markets including the U.S., in early 2010.

Jaguar XK 5.0 V8 – video review

Jaguar has made a number of significant changes to the stunning XK – the most significant being a brand new engine range. Replacing the venerable 4.2-litre motor is a 5-litre V8 with 380bhp, and a massive 500bhp if you go for the supercharged XKR. Ian Callum – legendary designer of the XK – really hit the nail on the head with this car. A Jaguar should look effortlessly fast and elegant; traits which this sportscar has in abundance.The facelifted XK only has subtle changes, including LED rear lights which take a lead from the XF saloon, LED side-repeaters inside sleeker door mirrors and cooling ducts framing the front bumper.

Audi R2

Could this be the car that finally cements Audi’s reputation as the world’s greatest sports car manufacturer? Not content with shaking up the automotive order among the likes of the Porsche 911 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage with its stunning R8, the company is now planning a new mid-engined model to take on the Porsche Boxster and Mercedes SLK.

Audi R2The high-performance two-seater cabriolet is codenamed R2, and is being developed with VW. Audi’s sister firm is also believed to be putting the finishing touches to a production version of the BlueSport concept car revealed at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show. The mid-engined R2 gets an all-new chassis and suspension derived from the MkV VW Golf. A four-wheel-drive variant is also a possibility, using a development of the Golf R32’s Haldex system. Plus, there are rumours that a hybrid – with electric power driving the front wheels – is planned, to help Audi reduce the CO2 emissions of its range.

The engine line-up is certain to include a mix of 2.0-litre four cylinder and 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged petrol units. A diesel is under consideration, but it’s unlikely to be offered from launch. All models will offer a choice between six-speed manual and seven-ratio R tronic semi-automatic gearboxes. Performance should be stunning, with power outputs ranging from 200bhp to a spectacular 380bhp. Top speed will be limited to 155mph, while the 0-60mph time is likely to drop below six seconds.

The R2 continues to develop Audi’s successful design theme as the tail-lamps of the new car will be sculpted to mimic the Q of its famous Quattro badge, just as they are on the R8. A third rear brake light will sit above Audi’s badge, while the engine cover is to be kept free of aerodynamic extras. Instead, an underbody diffuser helps to improve the car’s stability at speed.

Inside, the high-quality cabin is likely to share much of its equipment with the BlueSport. That means an enormous touchscreen cabin control set-up, as well as lightweight sports seats. In addition, a clever heating system inspired by the innovative ‘headscarf’ system offered in Mercedes’ SLK is integrated into the seatbacks.

The R2 also gets dramatic gaping side vents, designed to feed cold air to the powerplant, providing clues to the car’s mid-engine layout. Expect the baby R8 to be launched in 2012, with a starting price of around £30,000.

2011 GMC Terrain spied

One frequently cited culprit of GM’s past quality-control problems is badge engineering, or the practice of building different versions of the same vehicle for multiple brands. The premier example is the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and its multitude of badge-engineered clones, which even the internet does not afford us the space to list.

The full-size Chevrolet Traverse is the fourth vehicle to be built on the General’s excellent Lambda platform. Likewise, the GMC Terrain will be the fourth vehicle to be built on the TE small-SUV architecture, following the Saturn Vue, Chevrolet Equinox, and Cadillac SRX.

GM today is less blatant about its badge engineering, with differences in appearance extending beyond just grilles and headlamps to the point that each vehicle wears wholly unique sheetmetal over similar underpinnings. Still, four derivatives is a quantity we feel surpasses the threshold of discretion for badge engineering, and the Saab 9-4X—a vehicle whose future is uncertain at best—would bring the TE total to five, although the Caddy and Saab will be built on a heavily revised version of the platform.

While the Terrain’s mechanicals will be pilfered from GM’s other trucklets, from what is visible beneath the minimal camouflage in our spy shots, it appears that the styling is cribbed both from its Lambda big brother, the Acadia, and the Sierra pickup. The Sierra lends its large-mouth grille and squared-off headlights to the Terrain, while the Acadia donates its high roofline, reverse-canted C-pillar, and the slope of its backlight. Together, those elements should make the Terrain instantly recognizable as a GMC, which is more than can be said of the TrailBlazer family’s grille and badge differentiations.

Like its siblings, the Terrain will likely offer a selection of four- and six-cylinder powerplants, with the most likely choices coming from the Equinox: a direct-injected (DI) 2.4-liter four-cylinder good for 182 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque, and a DI 3.0-liter V-6 rated at 255 hp and 214 lb-ft. Power will travel through a six-speed automatic transmission to either the front or all four wheels.

If the handsome and cohesive design is any indicator, this could be GMC’s best small SUV ever. As buyers continue to migrate from full-size, body-on-frame barges into smaller vehicles offering the same sightlines and sense of security, well-executed compact SUVs will be a potentially huge profit center. And, with the future of Saturn, and therefore the Vue, in doubt, perhaps four TE-based SUVs isn’t too many after all.

Renault Gordini comes back

Renault is set to bring back one of its most famous sporting badges – Gordini! And the French giant will use it in a bid to rival top seller MINI, which has enjoyed huge success with its Cooper and Cooper S models. Sitting just below the current Renaultsport performance range, the Gordini brand will create a new line-up of hot hatches, giving buyers a greater chance to personalise their car.

It’s an approach that’s worked really well for MINI – and Fiat, too, with its Abarth line-up – and Renault hopes to capitalise. The first model will be the Twingo Gordini, which is scheduled to appear in 2010. This will be followed by hot versions of the Clio, as well as the new Mégane Coupé shown here. It gets the famous Gordini blue paintwork along with striking white stripes and contrasting black alloys.

Renault’s senior vice president of global marketing – Stephen Norman – confirmed at the Geneva Motor Show that both Gordini and Gordini S cars are likely. Gordini cars first came to prominence when they raced in Formula One in the Fifties. The firm then worked with Renault, tuning engines and creating fast road cars, including the 8, 12 and – lastly, in the Eighties – the Gordini 5.

The idea to bring the name back is part of a push by Renault to boost its perception, Norman added: “Between 2003 and 2007, Renault’s brand image declined, especially in the UK, from being on a level with VW to where we are now.” Bosses believe the new designs – such as the Renaultsport Mégane Coupé and Clio – plus the arrival of Gordini will boost sales. Norman suggested that Gordini could be used as the backbone of a new club racing formula.

The decision to revive the brand came after top brass ditched plans for an Alpine comeback, which would have included a new sports car. But Renault has decided to focus on ranges that make financial sense in the current downturn.

2009 Chevrolet Colorado 4WD Crew Cab V8

The pickup truck market took a massive hit last year when gas prices topped $4 a gallon, but the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado still managed to hang on to the number one and two spots, respectively, on the 2008 sales charts. Even so, many full-size truck buyers made the switch to smaller models, such as our latest test vehicle – the Chevrolet Colorado, equipped with a V8 from the factory for the first time.

2009 Chevrolet Colorado 4WD Crew Cab V8The Chevy Colorado is a mid-size pickup that thinks it’s a full-size truck. Its exterior design is tough and the Colorado is available in almost as many models and configurations as its big brother, the Silverado, which we tested earlier this week in new-for-2009 6.2-liter form. To add to its full-size mentality – and, GM hopes, to lure some buyers who might bet stepping away from full-size trucks, buyers can now have the Colorado with GM’s 5.3-liter V8.

Buyers eyeing the Colorado will likely cross shop it with the Ford Ranger, Dodge Dakota and Toyota Tacoma. At the upper end of the Colorado spectrum, some might even be taking a look at Honda’s Ridgeline pickup. Only the Dakota offers V8 power, however. With V8s a genuine rarity in this class we’d call the Colorado’s newfound 5.3-liter a breakthrough, although we’d hesitate to call it a big breakthrough. Aside from the new powerplant, the Colorado doesn’t offer anything that shatters the mid-size pickup mold.

On the whole, the Colorado isn’t a bad looking truck. However, it does have some cartoonish features that detract from its overall appearance. Up front, the Colorado sports an aggressive front fascia, highly reminiscent of the last-generation Silverado. A solid chrome bar does a nice job of breaking up the Colorado’s rather tall front grille, and also serves as real estate for the massive Chevy Bow Tie. Some might say the Colorado’s mug is a bit too much and over the top, but the design actually grew on us over the week we had the truck.

Pronounced wheel arches hint at the Colorado’s off-road prowess, but the upward sloping design is lost on us. We would have much preferred more conventional wheel arches, but at least our tester’s meaty Bridgestones filled them nicely.

Although Chevrolet Colorado does a pretty good job of masquerading as a full-size truck from the outside, it can’t hide its smaller roots on the inside. The Colorado’s interior is noticeably tighter than the Silverado’s and also feels a bit dated.

2009 Lamborghini Insecta Concept Design

(from Iulian Bumbu) The project represents a personal vision of a Lamborghini Insecta 2 seater super sports car.

The inspiration comes from nature, and especially the insect world. I began by studying the different types of exoskeletons or armor that certain insects have.

2009 Lamborghini Insecta Concept DesignI sought to apply these type of organic forms and translate them into the style of the brand so that when you see the car, you have no doubt that it is a Lamborghini. This type of armored appearance is especially visible in the rear and top views.

The dimensions of 2009 Lamborghini Insecta Concept Design are: 4300 mm length (same as the Gallardo), 1000 mm height and 2000 mm wide, with a wheelbase of 2650 mm. The body is carbonfiber and the car can use the same engine as the Gallardo.

The idea was to create a very extreme race oriented supercar with a style that introduces new soft and organic lines and integrates them into the geometrical style of Lamborghini.

Citroen DS Inside

Among the most-awaited concept cars at the Geneva show was the Citroen DS Inside, prototype of the twin Chevron, showing the road the company will take in the future, in terms of style, communication and brand image.

Citroen DS Inside-1Citroen DS Inside-2Citroen has managed to include just about everything in the small DS Inside, which will reach the market in 2010 with the DS3 model, heir to the current C3. The model has been created to revive the concept of “créative technologie”, with its unmistakable style, technology, originality, substance and quality. Citroen has enjoyed presenting this upmarketing, but without the price, as rigorously highlighted by the company.

The debut was near-perfect but the only gripe we have was in the choice of colouring. This “Dandy” version was certainly true to its name, with pearl grey matched to bright pink - a far cry from the more elegant “Seduction” version which had dark brown and metallic reflections.

2010 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG-12010 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG-2The finely-tuned 6.3-litre, V8 engine in the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG achieves a peak output of 420kW at 6800rpm - compared to 336kW in the C63 AMG - and 650Nm at 4750rpm, making it one of the most powerful sports cars in its segment with a power-to-weight ratio of just 2.84kg/hp. Initial performance tests have revealed the new ‘Gullwing’ accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 3.8 seconds, before going on to a top speed of 315km/h. To reach these new heights in power, AMG employed an all-new intake system, reworked valve train and camshafts, the use of flow-optimised tubular steel headers and dethrottling of the exhaust system.

The switch to dry sump lubrication has also allowed engineers to lower the position of the engine in the vehicle, effectively lowering it’s centre of gravity for exhilarating driving dynamics. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission has been mounted at the rear to improve weight distribution, connected to the engine with an ultra-light carbon-fibre shaft – similar to the set-up used on the DTM C‑Class racing touring car. The driver has the choice of four driving modes ranging from comfort to sports, a three-stage ESP system as well as a RACESTART function for ultimate traction and safety together with exhilarating driving dynamics.

Keeping this power under control is an AMG high-performance composite brake package all-round with optional ceramic composite discs. Development of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG began in the final quarter of 2006, due to be completed by the end of 2009 with the final production model available to customers in the first quarter of 2010.

Samsung eMX Concept

Sketches of the the Samsung eMX concept have surfaced ahead of its April debut at the Seoul Motor Show. Produced by Renault-Samsung Motors, the concept is a preemptive look at what the 2010 Samsung SM3 sedan might look like. The concept is said to have been developed by over 400 Renault-Samsung engineers from France, Japan, and South Korea.

The firm's automotive division was created in the mid-90s, with Renault purchasing 70% of the division in 2000 after Asia's late 1990s financial crisis hit South Korea. Renault now owns about 80% of the venture.

The eMX, or eco-Motoring Experience, will have a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. A naturally aspirated 136hp 2.0-liter engine is available on the current Samsung SM3/Nissan Bluebird Sylphy. Perhaps the eMX uses a similar engine as the 205 hp 2.0-liter turbo found on the new Renault Laguna GT. That engine, with 300 Nm maximum torque, would make many compact cars a fun ride. An engine like this would really up the ante in the Korean sedan wars. The best performing engine found on the current Hyundai Elantra is a 138 hp 2.0-liter DOHC petrol, while the Kia Forte has access to a 2.4-liter CVVT engine that generates 173 hp.

Although the concept has a futuristic look on paper, you can clearly see how many of the design cues could make it to production. The elongated hood maybe connects to the front end by forming a bit of a wedge shape, and the wheels are a bit oversized (on paper), but beyond that, the car could manage to keep a similar look when it hits the market. Look for Renault-Samsung to try and put their best foot forward with the Samsung eMX by showing off top shelf safety systems, and more environmentally friendly technologies.

With Hyundai and Kia making production cuts in favor of R&D investment, Renault-Samsung has an opportunity to gain market share in the immediate future. They need the Samsung eMX concept to generate enough excitement to indirectly hype up the 2010 Samsung SM3. Look for more information about the concept car in the run-up to its April debut.

2011 BMW 6-Series Convertible spied

BMW's upcoming 2011 BMW 6-Series convertible has once again been spotted undergoing winter testing in northern Scandinavia.

2011 BMW 6-Series Convertible -12011 BMW 6-Series Convertible -2Although the car is heavily disguised, we can clearly see that the new 6-Series will borrow several styling cues from recent BMW models such as the 7-Series sedan, the new Z4 roadster, and the highly praised CS concept. Up front, the new 6-series adopts a more traditional BMW appearance with a wider grille, reshaped headlights, and a more aggressive front bumper.

At the rear, the stylized taillights appear to remain intact while the highly controversial "Bangle Butt" seems to have been minimized if not removed completely. The "fabric" roof fits rather poorly which seems to suggest that the new convertible will ditch the current twin flying buttress soft-top in favor of a new folding metal roof.

Power options will most likely carry over from the current 6-Series, but the 360 hp 4.8-liter V8 engine will be replaced by the new 400 hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 from the recently introduced BMW 750i. So far it's unclear whether or not the M6 will continue to be powered by the current model's V10 engine, with 500 hp and 383 ft-lbs of torque, or if will it have to make do with a slightly retuned version of the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class BlueHybrid

On the face of it, a hybrid Mercedes-Benz S-Class shouldn't exist. If anyone wants a slightly-more-economical-than-usual luxury car, they should buy a fractionally smaller (but still pretty ritzy in the overall scheme of things) luxury car like an E-Class. Or an S-Class diesel. Actually, if saving the world were really the priority, the vast expense of developing a car like the S-Class hybrid would be much better spent building tidal electricity generators, or just standing in the town square in Stuttgart and handing out free loft insulation.

For a start, American luxury-car drivers don't think diesel is a proper fuel for anything smaller than a Peterbilt, whereas the mere existence of a hybrid in the range - albeit a vast and thirsty one - is seen by your average American as sufficient to turn the world's deserts into lush meadows overnight. Never mind, this being Mercedes, the engineers have tackled the hybrid issue with comprehensive diligence. The company is developing two entirely separate hybrid systems. The first is this one, a comparatively mild system that sticks a disc-shaped electric motor in the place where the V6 engine's flywheel would be. Mercedes has another system in the works too, for its SUVs - a full-hybrid that entirely replaces the conventional transmission set-up.

The cost of developing this stuff means it makes sense only if the effort is shared. So the S400's mild hybrid system will also show up on a BMW 7-Series. By the same token, the full-hybrid system is the same as on some of GM's SUVs in the States, and on the forthcoming BMW X6 hybrid.

Despite, or rather because of, the complex technology here, the driving experience is utterly... normal. I drove a prototype, by the way. The real thing will be introduced in the US later this spring, along with a mild range-wide face-lift. Merc calls it the S400 BlueHybrid, even though the engine is a 3.5-litre. Fair play, because it feels a bit more muscular than the S350, thanks to the extra torque that comes from the electric assistance, especially at low revs.

So you've got a car that wafts along with the sort of stately quiet a V6 petrol S-Class normally does. As with an S350, there's enough urge (slightly more in this case) that in normal traffic, or even at a good clip on A-roads, it never seems to be trying that hard. And then you commit to overtaking a bigger line of trucks than usual, or make a spirited attack on a series of uphill bends, and you're reminded thatan S-Class is a pretty hefty lumpof metal and leather; suddenly,the V6 starts to run out of answers and sounds pretty strained.

Saab 9-3X SportHatch

Saab did its best at the Geneva motor show, presenting its new 9-3X SportHatch, which follows in the footsteps of some offroad offerings such as the Volvo XC70 and Audi’s allroad range.

The petrol version has all wheel drive, while the diesel features rear wheel drive. The higher wheel base, XWD, and rear electronic differential with anti-slip eLSD, make this an excellent competitor in this segment, compared to some of the soft-roader options.

Other Saab 9-3X SportHatch features include the transmission offered, a six-speed manual or automatic, and the boot, which has a variable capacity of between 477 and 1331 litres.

Hamilton drives his McLaren F1 car with a Blackberry - Video

In an online society, companies have been known to go to great lengths to advertise their products in clever new ways, but few could compare to this viral video of Lewis Hamilton behind the wheel of his McLaren F1 car in a way no one imagined possible. The story goes two geeks who hacked the Blackberry Storm to control their R/C F1 car were invited by McLaren to view this same concept on a much larger scale.



After arriving at McLaren’s test circuit in Portugal they find the team has hacked into its own F1 car, creating the world’s fastest and most expensive R/C toy. Naturally, this is all too overwhelming for the 2008 F1 Driver’s Champion who immediately takes his new toy for a quick lap using the phone’s built-in accelerometer to steer.

Alfa Romeo MiTo GTA - official video

The four cylinder turbo under the bonnet of the Alfa Romeo MiTo GTA certainly makes itself heard. We don’t get to hear it long, but we hear it. Whether you like the MiTo GTA or not, the engine has a reassuring low rumble to it that proves that this is not a tinny little car. This official video is a little too long once we get into the rather boring sound track, but stick with it because a look at the Giulia Sprint is worth it. The video shows that the Alfa Romeo MiTo GTA, prepared by Biscione in Milan, could prove itself worthy of the Gran Turismo Alleggerita title.

2009 Ford Mondeo tri-fuel

Ford of Europe is set to add a rather frugal and versatile model into its Mondeo line-up, capable of running on three different types of fuels.

2009 Ford Mondeo tri-fuel The new tri-fuel Ford Mondeo is compatible with either petrol, ethanol or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) which results in a vastly extended range and lower running costs.

The entire Mondeo line-up – including sedan, hatchback and wagon – is available with the new tri-fuel system, all featuring a 108-kW 2.0-litre engine as standard.

The combined petrol and ethanol tank is capable of storing up to 70-litres of fuel, while the separate LPG tank will have a capacity just under 49-litres.

This gives the tri-fuel Mondeo an expected range of 850km on petrol or ethanol and 460km on LPG for a combined total of 1,310km on just one fill-up.

The wagon version is slightly disadvantaged thanks to its added weight, boasting a slightly diminished range of 1,230km.

Land Rover LRX SUV Concept production

The stunning Land Rover LRX SUV Concept is set to go into production, with the UK Government confirming a grant offer of up to A$57.4 million for Land Rover to develop an all-new vehicle based on its design. The production LRX would be the smallest, lightest and most efficient vehicle the brand has ever produced, becoming a key addition to the Range Rover family of luxury vehicles.

The grant offer has been made under the Government’s Grant for Business Investment scheme and forms a relatively small contribution towards the projected A$850 million cost of the project.

“We welcome the Government’s support for this project, which would form a key part of our future product plans and which we very much want to put into production,” said Phil Popham, Managing Director of Land Rover.

The compact size, lighter weight and sustainability-focused technologies of the Land Rover LRX Concept establish a major step forward in enabling the implementation of Land Rover’s e-terrain technologies strategy and achievement of its goal to exceed a 20 per cent improvement in CO2 emissions.

Audi R15 TDI

The Audi V10 TDI engine produces more than 447kW and a massive 1,050Nm but is more compact and lighter than the twelve-cylinder unit, which powered the historic 2006 Le Mans winning Audi R10 TDI car. Historic, as this was the first diesel powered racecar to ever win the prestigious French endurance race. But Audi is no stranger when it comes to winning at Le Mans, its astonishingly successful R8 racecar, knocked up an amazing five wins at this super high-speed track from the year 2000.

Audi R15 TDIAudi R15 TDI is the world’s first ‘second’ generation diesel sports racer competing in the Le Mans Prototype (LMP1) category, and will debut on March 21 at Sebring, in Florida USA. It’s a highly advanced Sports Car employing a host of new technologies over the R10 TDI, and may well be considered a live test bed for features you may well see in your entry-level Audi passenger car, in just a few short years.

Audi have also evolved their turbo-charging and direct injection technology, which has resulted in improved engine response, if that was possible. Even more relevant to the future Audi customer, is that the R15 TDI uses a new generation of diesel particulate filters, which are lighter again. With speeds down the Mulsanne Straight reaching over 330km/h aerodynamics are critical, and Audi has taken this science to new levels using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics).

The R15 TDI has been CFD optimised so that airflow around the car at high speeds will cause minimal resistance to the car’s forward motion.

Audi Sport, is said to have ploughed some US$15 million a year into the R10 TDI project, and you would expect the new car to be even more expensive. However, if you consider the new technologies, which have been developed for the R15 TDI, and how they will most likely end up in a passenger car costing less than $50,000, then I would call that money well spent.

Lightning Hybrid renderings

In less than a month at the Denver Auto Show, a new contender for the Progressive Automotive X-Prize is scheduled to be revealed by a startup automaker called Lightning Hybrids. There's plenty of innovative thinking here, including the use of a 2-stroke engine running biodiesel mated with a hydraulic hybrid powertrain. Combined, the team of engineers behind the vehicle expects it to hit 100 miles per gallon and offer up 240 horsepower.

The final form will be shod in carbon fiber for a light curb weight, which should also help the Lightning LH4 make the run to 60 mph in under six seconds.

If all goes to plan, which is certainly a very big "if", Lightning hopes to put its first cars into production sometime in 2010 with two cars that it's currently got on the drawing board. Of course, winning the $10 million X-Prize purse would likely go a long way towards achieving that lofty goal.

Volkswagen world’s most economical car

While we don’t have a great deal of information available at this stage, we do know that Volkswagen is set to reveal the world’s most economical non-hybrid car to shareholders attending the 42nd annual general meeting of Volkswagen AG in Hamburg.

The prototype, as shown here, was built in conditions of such great secrecy that little more is known about the car, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted after next week’s meeting.

Renault Twingo CC

Renault watchers expected a production version of the Twingo CC (coupe cabriolet) to make an appearance at the Geneva show this week, but were disappointed when it was a no-show. We've got some spy photos that suggest that all is not lost, however. The Twingo CC isn't gone, but its introduction seems to have been delayed for unknown reasons.

Renault Twingo CC-1Renault Twingo CC-2The last time a grainy picture of a heavily camouflaged Renault mule like this one surfaced, back in June, it was misidentified as a Megane III Coupe prototype. We now know that it's the open-top version of the Twingo, which is preparing to do battle with the Opel Tigra and Peugeot 207 CC in the entry-level segment. The drop-top Twingo CC is a two-seater with a one-piece retractable hardtop, rather than the common cloth top, providing all-weather protection and safety as well as summer sun and fun. It'll share the Twingo's 1.2 liter horsepower four-cylinder engine, but get a boost in performance to about 120 horsepower. It'll also be one of the least expensive ways to go topless.

First false reports accompanied by fake renderings put the Twingo CC concept debut at Frankfurt 2007. Then a production version was expected at last year's Paris motor show, and again at Geneva last week, but the Twingo CC remains a no-show, apart from the test mules we've seen so far. We're not sure what's holding the car up: word on the street suggests that there are engineering issues with the retractable hardtop delaying the launch.

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T Turbo

Hyundai knows 210 horsepower in a 3380-pound car won’t astound anyone. It imagines the base Genesis coupe with its 2.0-liter turbocharged four as a blank canvas for tuners and speed-widget makers chasing the young buyers who will be hooked by the turbo’s $22,750 starting price.

The 1998cc four is the same basic engine as in the 291-hp Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, both engines being byproducts of the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance, a joint venture among Hyundai, Mitsubishi, and Chrysler.
Similarities outweigh the differences, we’re told, between the Evo’s motor and Hyundai’s all-aluminum Theta four with its twin-cam variable valve timing and Mitsubishi TD04H turbo making 15.0 psi. Core components such as pistons and rods should move freely between them, for example. Hyundai’s engine uses a different computer, from Siemens. The software wasn’t intentionally made easy to crack, “but it’s not very tough,” says one Hyundai exec with a wink. That means up to 300 horsepower should be possible without major surgery.

Three trim levels include base, Premium, and Track. All are well equipped, though Premium brings a power driver’s seat, an Infinity stereo, a sunroof, and keyless start. As with the V-6 Track, the 2.0T Track version features a stiffer suspension, 19-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, a limited-slip diff, aluminum pedals, xenon headlamps, fog lights, and rear spoiler. One item available only on the 2.0T Track: red cloth inserts for the black seats.

2010 Chevrolet Spark at Geneva

GM has announced they will finally release the 2010 Chevrolet Spark at the Geneva Motor Show later this week. Forgive us for saying this, but we’ll believe it when we see it. As you may recall, GM previously said the minicar would be unveiled at the NAIAS, even teasing it a day before its scheduled release on a U.S. national television program.

2010 Chevrolet Spark Then, for some unknown reason, the car was mysteriously pulled from the Detroit Auto show. In its place, they wheeled out the years old Chevy Beat concept first shown in New York during the 2007 show there.

Maybe that is why GM has released a full slate of pictures, and details, on the four-door minicar a day before its release. Early information about the car got a bunch of people excited two months ago. Unfortunately for Chevy, after seeing the interior photos, that excitement definitely faded.

2009 Mitsubishi i MiEV Sport Air Concept

The i MiEV SPORT AIR is a concept for a sporty electric vehicle (hence SPORT) that gives an indication of the direction EVs may take in the future. It also gives shape to MMC's "Drive@earth" tagline announcing the company's intention to deliver fun-to-drive motoring while at the same time placing a new emphasis on environmental issues. The concept model is distinguished by its detachable "clear cutaway" roof panel which brings a wide open feel to the interior (hence AIR) for an exhilarating motoring experience,other features include a second-generation lithium-ion battery module with improved electrodes, while the body uses a number of new weight-reducing technologies.

Other design features include the front and rear lamp units cleanly styled to produce a three-dimensional look; as well as the "clear cutaway" roof panel, designed to provide an exhilarating motoring experience. Inside, i MiEV SPORT AIR offers a welcoming ambience in a design that uses organic shapes and lighting to create a comfortable and restful space. The wrap-around cockpit design, on the other hand, is styled to alert the driver to the high performance potential of the car the moment he sits behind the wheel. The main controls and switches are all ergonomically grouped around the dial-type shifter, making for more positive location and operation by the driver.

i MiEV SPORT AIR features exterior and interior coloring that takes "Japanese Technology" as its theme in projecting both a friendly, approachable image and high-tech looks. The blue exterior color evokes the image of an exhilarating clear blue sky, while the use of pearl finish paint gives a sheen to the body highlights for an overall appearance that is both friendly and futuristic while also projecting an eco-friendly image. The interior uses a high-contrast color scheme of greyish blue and "greige" (an intermediate color between grey and beige.) With the use of blue illumination for the instruments and interior lighting this two-tone scheme imparts an advanced and high-tech look to the cabin while at the same time producing a relaxing and reassuring atmosphere.

2009 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Coupe

2009 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Coupe is 260 horsepower 2.0-litr turbocharged and intercooled Ecotec four-cylinder engine found in the Saturn Sky Red Line, Pontiac Solstice GXP and HHR SS. The new Cobalt SS features a five-speed manual transmission, FE5 Sport suspension -- capable of achieving 0.9 g on the skip pad -- and Brembo brakes. Sticky 225/40-18 Continental summer-only tires also help achieve this figure.

The turbo SS comes only with a five-speed manual transmission that incorporates a no-lift shift feature. GM assures its engineers and test drivers performed about 600 consecutive sprints using this method, without any ill effects.

Other standard features include A/C, premium sound system with XM radio, remote entry, electronic stability control, and OnStar. Options are kept to a minimum, with a $295 sound system upgrade, big rear spoiler seen in the photos for $195 and a limited-slip differential for $495. The big ticket option is the $750 sunroof.

Highway fuel economy is 30 mpg (or top in its class) GM claims.

The price undercuts the admittedly more powerful Dodge Caliber SRT-4, which carries an MSRP of $23,015 including a $580 destination fee.

According to Matt Weaver, project lead designer at NDE, Qazana was designed to be sophisticated but fun. “It’s a hugely optimistic car, which is no bad thing in these difficult times. Had it been created in the 1960s, it would have counted camper vans, bikes and buggies as its rivals. Infused with that same spirit, there’s nothing quite like it available today.”

Frazer-Nash Namir supercar cocept – video

It seems almost every brand from the automotive industry's past is ripe for revival - no matter how long ago cars bearing the brand last rolled off the production line. Why Frazer-Nash? The company has never disappeared, and indeed, a successor firm to the original automaker is playing a major role in the project. Frazer-Nash Research is now part of the Kamkorp group and specialises in developing electric drivetrains for hybrid cars and mass transit systems.

The new Frazer-Nash Namir supercar - the name is Arabic for Tiger - is designed to showcase the company's technology - it's not at the moment intended to signal the relaunch of the nameplate. The car has been styled by Fabrizio Giugiaro, and built at the company's Turin design and engineering centre. It has a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis with honeycomb panels that encloses the rear suspension and weighs of just 110kg. Unveiling the car, Fabrizio Giugiaro said he had based the distinctive styling around the Frazer-Nash diamond logo, while the interior is intended to be a modern take on British luxury. "It was a pleasure to work with a name that has made automobile history," he said.



The really interesting part of the car is Frazer-Nash's own contribution - the hybrid powertrain, which combines an 814cc endothermic rotary engine with four electric motors with an equivalent output of 370hp. This gives startling performance of 0-100kmh in 3.5sec and 0-200kmh in 10.4 sec, plus a 300kmh (187mph) top speed. But being a hybrid, the car can travel for 39km on a litre of fuel, emitting less than 60g/km of CO2. The rotary engine runs on petrol and acts as a generator that charges the lithium polymer power cells, and a 50-litre fuel tank capacity gives a total autonomy of almost 2,000km. "It was an interesting and profitable collaboration that resulted in a unique vehicle with very exciting performance levels in terms of speed and pick-up, above all in terms of low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions," said Fabrizio Giugiaro.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe at Geneva

2010 Mazdaspeed3

One look at the 2010 Mazdaspeed3 is enough to tell you that things have changed. While all the underhood details are still unavaliable, intial images have come to light to give us a better glimpse of the car that will be making its debut across the Atlantic tonight.

2010 Mazdaspeed3-12010 Mazdaspeed3-2The new Mazdaspeed3's Nagare-style grinning grille remains largely the same up front, but features reworked air intakes that feed passing air to the brakes more efficiently. Also of note on the front clip is the deletion of lower ducts set below the foglights. More aggressive side skirts continue the Mazdaspeed theme along the flanks and to the rear, the enhancements culminate with a blacked-out rear diffuser sporting a dual exhaust. A more pronounced wing also perches above the five-door's hatchback. Bolder fenders house the larger wheel and tire setup, while the bulging hood features a gaping scoop.

Though the Euro-spec and U.S.-spec Mazdaspeed3 likely won't be perfectly identical, this car should give us a pretty good idea of what to expect from the U.S. model. Until we see that car in New York this April, stay tuned as we bring you all the information on the Euro version from Geneva later tonight.

2009 Abt Audi AS5 and AS5-R

(from ABT Press Release) ABT Sportsline has achieved plenty of success with the AS5, which is based on Audi’s A5 - as the coupe has a dynamic and elegant design, is full of technical power and also quick. All this makes it a "real” ABT. Now the company from Kempten has brought out the jewel in this range - the AS5-R. This vehicle is an ab(t)solute super sports car, nothing more and nothing less. Thanks to ABT POWER R, i.e. the change to the engine management and the insertion of an ABT Compressor, the performance is increased by an impressive 156 HP (115kW) to a powerful 510 HP (375kW). The AS5-R reaches 100km/h in 4.5 seconds and continues on powerfully up to its maximum speed of 292km/h. In spite of this enormous increase in performance, consumption and thereby emissions still remain at the level of the series-produced vehicle. CO2 emissions per HP thereby fall from 0.81 to 0.56g/km.

The ABT braking system with 380 millimetre disc diameter provides maximum deceleration even in extreme circumstances, and the ABT Coil-over suspension system also helps to bring the potential power onto the road. Motor sport professional Christian Abt has perfectionised the interaction of power with his know-how. The result is a top-class driving machine, which is also enjoyable in everyday use and is pleasant to drive on long journeys. The Audi ABT AS5-R is therefore a maximum of a car – and a statement which shows the high level at which the engineers from Allgaeu work.

Its "suit” fits, of course, like a glove: The front spoiler accentuates the ABT grill and the striking section around the fog lights, inner fender skirt and the gill-shaped air inlets provide contours to the side of the ABT AS5-R. They have also succeeded on the side which most drivers only rarely get to see: The rear with the ABT rear skirt and 4-pipe rear muffler shows that this model athlete on wheels is more than “just” a car. The designers of ABT recommend the 20 inch BR alloys as the perfect accessory. Wheel-tyre combinations with height performance tyres are, of course, also available. Only with these accessories can the fast AS5-R safely unleash its power. And it has lots of that.

Ford Iosis Max Concept

Ford will reveal the Iosis Max Concept which it refers to as a next generation multi-activity vehicle or MAV at Geneva. The Iosis name is known from previous Ford concepts like the 2005 Iosis Concept and the 2006 Iosis X which became the Kuga. Ford Iosis Max further confirms Ford's design future language in the striking trapezoidal shapes, sharp angles and a bold face. It's supposed to be a flexible option for those not just looking to transport the kids but who also want something that could easily pass as a plaything.

Positioning itself as a sporty vehicle the Iosis Max features a sloping roofline that flows all the way on to the bonnet just above the aggressive lower front grille. Instead of little bulbs for the LEDs, little strips were installed in the rocker panels. Four 19-inch alloy wheels, an extended panoramic windscreen, the absence of a B pillar and an aerodynamic rear spoiler on the roof above the tailgate glass help the Iosis Max signal its sporting intentions quite clearly.

Ford fitted the car with a new 1.6-litre EcoBoost (direct injection) engine that produces 180PS (132kW). Not only is it a powerful engine but Ford says it's also friendly to the environment.
The interior seating arrangement is courtesy of seats that are designed to make occupants feel like they are floating on air. The four seats are made of lightweight materials and can be folded to increase interior space. A touch screen panel on the dashboard gives accesses to utilities like the music and satellite navigation system.

Dongfeng Motor and Chang An Automobile Chinese companies interested in purchasing Volvo brand

According to Swedish daily “Dagens Industri”, Chinese companies Dongfeng Motor and Chang An Automobile are interested in the acquisition of Volvo. These companies, together with Saic and Faw, are part of the Chinese Government’s auto company selection as brands that drive consolidation in the sector and make competitive products. They produce about two million vehicles a year.

Volvo S60-1Volvo S60-2Volvo has already gained the attention of Chinese manufacturer, Geely, in the past, but the situation is currently very unclear. Volvo is currently waiting on the decision from the European investment bank group on the loan of 445 million euros. Come Easter, the future should be clearer.

Meanwhile, Yang Jian from Automotive News China is convinced that Chinese manufacturers are not ready for the purchase of a company like Volvo, despite their large financial capacity. Problems to arise would be the management of the company, controlled by the Chinese state, and managers not competent in global operations.

Opel Ampera Officiall video

After patent leaks and a fantastic job by spy photographers, Opel has officially unveiled their version of the Chevrolet Volt called the Ampera. Unlike the Holden Volt which was relieved last week, the new Ampera features unique styling which has a definite Euro-flair. The exterior is dominated by a futuristic design that has an interesting boomerang headlight arraignment, sleek aerodynamics, and a bold Opel grille. From the rear, the Ampera has a sporty design that features a large horizontal chrome bar that ties together the taillight units, twin vertical outboard slots, and bold looking trim where a diffuser would normally reside.

The five-door four seat Ampera continues the space-age theme on the interior as it features a dark take on the Chevy Volt's iPod-appearance. One of the cabin's key features is a the use of Dark Argent Metallic paint on the center stack which creates a sporty appearance that mixes well with the cabin's Jet Black interior and Spice Red accents. Other interior features include an integrated shifter, two information displays, a touch-sensitive infotainment center, and an odd electric design theme on the door panels.

Power for the Ampera comes from GM's Voltec Propulsion System which uses a 111 kW electric drive unit and a 16-kWh lithium-ion battery which allows the car to travel up to 60 km on electricity alone before a small petrol powered engine kicks in to recharge the battery. This combination allows the Ampera to have a range up to 500 kilometers before needing to be refueled or recharged from any 230v household outlet. The Ampera's electric drive unit delivers 370 Nm of torque and about 150 horsepower which enables the car to travel from zero to 100 km/h in around nine seconds, and hit a top speed of 161 km/h.

Lamborghini Murciélago LP 670-4 SV comes to Geneva Motor Show

This is the first picture of the Lamborghini Murciélago LP 670-4 SV ahead of the reveal tomorrow at the Geneva Motor Show. The SV is for superveloce but it seems more supervelocissimo to us.

Supporting what we've previously heard, the new ride is getting a horsepower increase to 670 HP and a weight reduction of 220 lbs relative to the already quick and nimble Lamborghini LP 640. The extra power and lower weight equals super acceleration, with a supposed 0-to-62 MPH time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of approximately 212 MPH.

This new data excludes the price of this 350-unit limited edition, but if everything else holds up it should go on sale in June with a price of approximately 25% more than the LP640, which is more money than the Jalopnik staff could pool together in a decade.

AC Schnitzer has unveiled its performance skin for the new generation BMW 7 Series, injecting an aggressive attitude into the luxury sedan. Despite only subtle visual modifications, the overall effect is rather dramatic, fulfilling the performance gap left by the lack of an M-division model. In Sports Trim, the new 7 Series by AC Schnitzer adds a rather imposing new front bumper with an elongated lip gives the car a faster look, together with new side skirts which emphasise the car’s wheelbase and lengthen it visually.

This includes new AC Schnitzer dual exhaust outlets which produce a far more rewarding sound from any engine in the 7 Series range, encased in a diffuser-style rear apron.

The final touches are down to customer taste, with a choice of countless wheel designs of a very suitable 22-inch variety.

The "edition limited three" boasts exclusive, elegant paintwork and a spring-like fresh interior design concept. Thanks to mhd technology as standard, the cult two-seater car combines a chic appearance with outstanding environmental friendliness. The smart fortwo "edition limited three" will be produced as a limited series. Smart fortwo is welcoming the spring with a special series featuring melon green metallic paintwork and extensive equipment, thus continuing the tradition of smart special models. The new special finish of the spring model injects a fresh shot of colour for the new season and harmonises with the tridion safety cell. The 15 inch alloy wheels in a sporty six-spoke design fitted with tyres measuring 175/55 R15 at the front and 195/50 R15 at the rear are a further eye-catching feature. The exterior look is rounded off by aluminium-effect "limited three" logos in the mirror triangle.

Here, the melon green metallic colour scheme is continued in an exclusive fabric design with shades of brown creating a stylish contrast, for example on the seats and in the door trim. The 3-spoke sports steering wheel with steering wheel gearshift is covered with dark brown leather, as is the gear knob. Shimmering matt silver trim parts round off the harmonious impression of the interior.

The new edition, which is available as a coupe and a cabriolet, is based on the "passion" equipment variant. Among other features it comes with softouch automatic gear programme, electric windows, air conditioning with automatic temperature control, and for the coupe a panoramic roof with sunblind. The standard equipment of the "edition limited three" also includes dashboard instruments and the radio 9. Power steering, heated seats, a lockable glove compartment and the smart sound system with five high quality loud speakers and a smart MP3 interface are optionally available.

The special series of the new smart fortwo also places a focus on "green" when it comes to the environment thanks to micro hybrid drive (mhd) technology as standard with an intelligent and user-friendly automatic start/stop system. The control electronics shut down the 52kW /71 hp engine as soon as the driver brakes and the vehicle's speed falls below 8 km/h - for example when approaching traffic lights. The engine starts again in the fraction of a second when the driver releases the brake pedal. The system is perfectly tailored to the automated manual transmission of the smart fortwo and is fully automatic - the driver does not need to do any clutchwork or gear shifting.

The automatic start/stop system reduces the combined fuel consumption by approximately eight percent (NEDC consumption per 100 km: coupe: 4.4 litres, cabrio: 4.5 litres). It also reduces the CO2 emissions to 104 grams per kilometre for the coupй and 106 grams per kilometre for the cabrio version. Fuel savings of up to almost 20 percent are possible in urban traffic with frequent stop-and-go situations. The special model "edition limited three" costs Ђ15,470 as a coupe and Ђ18,510 as a cabrio (German list price incl. VAT).

2011 Opel Ampera - First Official Image

GM has released the first official photo of the 2011 Opel Ampera today ahead of the electric car's unveiling at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show later this week.

Really, though, we got our best look just over a week ago when intrepid spy photographers in Germany caught the car out in the open posing for its official GM photo shoot. Mechanically, the Opel Ampera is identical to its North American cousin, the Chevrolet Volt. Rather than design an entirely new car on the Voltec architecture, GM has restyled it for the European market, a move that will certainly save money for cash-strapped GM. Being mechanically identical, the Ampera will have the same 40-mile all-electric range and a range of "several hundred" miles after a gasoline-powered engine starts up and runs a generator.

Ferrari F450 spied

These lovely spy shots of the Ferrari F450, project code named F142, were taken in Sweden and give us a first glimpse of the mechanical modifications to the vehicle. Compared to previous photos of the F450, the differences to the current F430 are notable: wider wheel cases (and therefore likely wider wheel base), and extra air intakes including on the front bonnet. The new engine is set to be a V8 with more than 500hp.

Nissan 370Z models – Video

In this video, Sports Illustrated models Damaris Lewis, Melissa Haro and Jessica Hart get the ride of their lives in the new Nissan 370Z. Thinking they will go on a nice cruise through the streets of Las Vegas, they find themselves drifting in the new Nissan 370Z in a cloud of smoke through a parking lot. The Nissan 370Z is powered by a 3.7-litre V6 engine that develops 332 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque and is coupled with a 7-speed automatic transmission. Just enough for some fun around the block.
