Citroen DS Inside

Among the most-awaited concept cars at the Geneva show was the Citroen DS Inside, prototype of the twin Chevron, showing the road the company will take in the future, in terms of style, communication and brand image.

Citroen has managed to include just about everything in the small DS Inside, which will reach the market in 2010 with the DS3 model, heir to the current C3. The model has been created to revive the concept of “créative technologie”, with its unmistakable style, technology, originality, substance and quality. Citroen has enjoyed presenting this upmarketing, but without the price, as rigorously highlighted by the company.

The debut was near-perfect but the only gripe we have was in the choice of colouring. This “Dandy” version was certainly true to its name, with pearl grey matched to bright pink - a far cry from the more elegant “Seduction” version which had dark brown and metallic reflections.

Citroen DS Inside concept

The French carmaker has released the first images and details of the Citroen DS Inside concept which illustrates a new product line. The company says the Citroen DS Inside shows a new concept, called Creative Technologie, but the details on the actual vehicle are slim. The Citroen DS Inside also premieres a new naming system for the car manufacturer. The model line up will be called DS3, DS4 and DS5 (DS stands for Different Spirit).

Renewing models and making them significantly better than their predecessors is already an ambitious program. But some customers want deeper-seated changes as mentalities shift from “wanting more” to “wanting better”. The first approach, consisting in satisfying fundamental mobility needs, addresses customers who, having down-sized, are on the look-out for more economical – and more intelligent – products.

Some would describe this as low-cost, but it isn’t. The real challenge for Citroen is designing products that are less expensive but with no loss in appeal. This approach is perfectly illustrated by the Citroen C3 Picasso, a real recession proof car.

In contrast, the second approach favors motoring pleasure, with no loss in practicality. Customers here are looking for outstanding products that confer status and bring them an all-new automotive experience. They want prestige, thrills and refinement, without the rigid codes of traditional upper-range models.To address this need, Citroen is today launching a new line of products to broaden its current range. The new line will consist of three new cars, positioned in the small, medium and large car segments, launched successively from 2010.

Citroen DS Inside stood and continues to stand for a new approach to automobiles and the future. CITROEN is taking inspiration from its design DNA to strengthen the positioning of its new product line. The range instills the different spirit, that the name DS inspires. Hence the distinctive model line up will be called DS3, DS4 and DS5. DS: Different Spirit.

New special edition Citroen C1

Citroën is introducing a nautical new special edition of the best selling sub 110g/km CO2 emitting car in Europe. The C1 Splash will benefit from extra equipment like air conditioning, front electric windows and remote control central locking, as well as two funky new body colours exclusive to Splash.

Customers can style their C1 Splash in the new colours – metallic Electra Blue or Lipizian White. In contemporary contrast to the striking body colours, the Splash will be fitted with custom coloured door mirrors; Lipizan White models will feature metallic black mirrors and the Electra Blue will have white door mirrors.

The frugal C1 Splash’s outstanding fuel economy (62.8 mpg on combined cycle), ultra low CO2 emissions of just 106g/km and group 1 insurance make it the ideal city car to cruise through the credit crunch.

The C1 Splash is based on the new 1.0i 68hp VT model and is available with 3 or 5 doors. Available from just £7,345, including a generous £800 cashback offer, it’s only £550 more than the VT and stacked with extras.

Citroen GT – world's most amazing car

Stunning is all I can manage. If you’re a gamer and you drive in the Grand Turismo series, then you already know about the Citroen GT. As a virtual car designed to run in the video game series, which as of April 2008 had shipped a staggering fifty million units, it begs to be built.

It’s not often the French would ever heed the call of the “punters” or in this case, the “gamers” but that’s exactly what’s happened, Citroen have gone and built the GT. Yes, you can drive it on real tarmac to the shops.

But Citroen had some help with the GT, Kazunori Yamauchi who heads up Polyphony Digital – the outfit who created the Sony Play station game, collaborated with Citroen’s designer Takumi Yamamoto and created the virtual racer, without any intention of the car ever seeing the light of day.

Featured in ‘Grand Turismo’ the GT is powered by an electric drivetrain with a fuel cell and produces no ‘dirty’ emissions. The ‘real thing’ however, favours a ‘tuned’ 560bhp V8, said to be race bred and very quick. At a massive five metres plus, with 21-inch diamond-effect alloy wheels and huge air intakes, it’s a menacing looking thing, but at the same time gorgeous.

Citroen, the masters of avant guard car design have been climbing their way back to the style council for several years, with designs like the C4, C5 and superb looking C6. Let’s just hope and pray that some of the design cues that that have been realised in the GT, get a ‘go’ in the slightly more affordable department.

Citroen C6 Pallas

Meet Citroen C6 Pallas – a one-off edition of the firm’s distinctive flagship, which revives a name last used on luxury versions of the legendary Sixties’ DS.

Designed by custom car stylist Darren Horton, the Pallas was first seen at this year’s British Motor Show – and now Auto Express has got behind the wheel. Equipped with huge 20-inch black alloys, low-profile tyres, piano black paint and smoked rear indicator lenses, it looks classy from the outside.

Step inside and passengers are treated to grand opulence. The seats are trimmed using cream and brown leather, and are so sumptuous that they wouldn’t look out of place on a luxury yacht.

Meanwhile, the cabin is treated to walnut panelling complete with images celebrating Citroen’s history – such as the moment the Eiffel Tower bore the firm’s famous double-chevron badge. As with the DS, this special C6 is packed with cutting-edge technology. In the custom centre console lies a computer with wi-fi Internet access. Passengers can operate the system with touchscreen LCD monitors in the headrests. And to access E-mail, they use a fingerprint-recognition system!

Underneath its dramatic skin the Pallas is mechanically identical to a C6 2.7 HDi. Flooring the throttle results in a muted woosh from the torquey diesel and the car gathers speed in a very refined manner. Unfortunately, the bigger rims and low-profile tyres detract from the standard C6’s beautiful ride – but it’s a small price to pay for such exclusive looks.

2009 Citroen C1

Citroen revealed the facelift version of the C1. The car is set to go on sale in Europe during November/December, and will receive minor styling changes including a redesigned front end and new interior trims.

Citroen C1 is an urban car that is made along side the Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo. They trio have become popular city cars if for no other reason than they are on the road for under £8,000 (about $13,000 at direct current rates).

The C1 is available in gas and diesel versions, mated to an automatic gearbox or a SensoDrive 5-speed automated manual. The three-cylinder gas engine makes 68 hp 1.0i and is the same as the ones available in the Peugeot and Toyota. The diesel engine is exclusive to the Citroen and makes 53 hp at 4,000 rpm.

Citroen’s Playstation GT5 Supercar Concept

Here we bring you live images of the supercar concept from the French automaker’s Paris motor show booth. Furthermore, we’ve added a set of pictures that were shot during the development phase of the concept car which was created as an exact, real-life replica of the digital version that will star in the 5th installment of Sony’s Gran Turismo video game.

Too bad this Citroen will never make it into production, but at least we’ll get our fix on the Playstation.

Citroen green concept

Citroën has embarked on a new project to look into the feasibility of producing an ultra-environmentally friendly vehicle based on the critically acclaimed C-Cactus concept car.

The C-Cactus represents a new approach to eco-friendly design. The radical, essentialist vehicle, with its emphasis on environmental technology, features a simplified design throughout, significantly reducing the number of components and leading to a reduction in weight, cost and the impact on the environment.

Removing features that are non-essential to the running of the car or the comfort and safety of the occupants – even doing away with the dashboard – has resulted in an interior comprising around half the parts of a similarly-sized conventional car. The door panels are made of just two parts, compared to twelve in a conventional car and many components are made from recycled materials.

The project will consider a range of powerplants including a 1.0 litre, sub 100g/km CO2 , petrol; a HYmotion2 diesel–electric hybrid returning near 100mpg fuel economy and CO2 emissions of just 78g/km or a 100% electric model, similar to the version which is on display at the Paris motor show and which offers zero emissions together with a top speed and range of almost 70mph and 100 miles respectively.

Citroen Nemo

Miniaturised motorhome specialist Romahome will unveil next week at the International Caravan and Motorhome Show at the NEC its R10 Solo conversion based on the Citroen Nemo. The single camper measuring 12-ft 7-inches long and 6-ft 3-inches tall (with the roof down) is slated as the smallest micro camper on the market. Equipment includes a single 6-ft bed, galley with sink and 2 burner hobs, solar panel powered LED rear lighting system, cool box and 3 traveling seats.

The R10 is available in either 1.4 petrol or 1.4 HDi diesel with optional Sensodrive automatic and has a list price of £18,995.

Citroen C3 Picasso at Paris Auto Show

Citroën is to launch a second generation of its pioneering Stop & Start technology. Previewed on a striking pearlescent white and orange C3 Picasso at the Paris motor show, the new micro-hybrid system will be introduced in 2010 and will be available on a range of petrol and diesel models.

The special show car offers even better economy than the standard model with almost 70mpg on the combined cycle as well as low CO2 emissions of just 110g/km thanks to the new Stop & Start technology and six-speed EGS (Electronic Gearbox System). When the new C3 Picasso is launched in 2009, diesel versions will be fitted with a Particulate Filter System and will meet the Company’s green ‘Airdream’ criteria.

Citroën was the first manufacturer to introduce Stop & Start with combined alternator-starter on its C2 and C3 models, some four years ago. Independent testing proved it could give a 27% fuel saving in urban traffic by turning off the engine as the vehicle comes to a halt and then instantly restarting it as soon as the brake pedal is released.

The new-generation Stop & Start system will retain the combined alternator-starter unit, which provides quiet, smooth and almost instantaneous restarts, and will produce even better fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Improving the system’s environmental performance further, the new generation Stop & Start will also recover energy during braking and deceleration to recharge the vehicle’s battery without consuming fuel.

Citroen Hybrid WRC

While Citroen’s headliner at Paris this year is the massive, oddball GT, we’re more interested in this pint-sized brawler. It’s the C4 WRC Hymotion4. You read that right — WRC, as in World Rally Chapmionship. The car is equipped with the company’s Hymotion4 system, which uses regenerative braking to charge rear-mounted battery packs.

In turn, those batteries power an additional electric motor for an extra boost during acceleration or to power the vehicle without the petrol mill up front. It can also be used in cooperation with the gasoline engine to reduce fuel consumption by about 30 percent. Though this is just a concept for the time being, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Loeb launching one of these things through WRC stages sometime soon.

With GTbyCITROEN, a show-car presented at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, Citroen becomes the first vehicle manufacturer to cross over to the virtual worlds: An original take on a road car, GTbyCITROEN is a style replica of a vehicle from the digital world. The car is the result of a partnership between Citroen and Polyphony, designer of the driving simulation game Gran Turismo 5 on Playstation 3. Already shipped in more than 50 million units worldwide, Gran Turismo is renowned for its quality, design and realism.

In the game, GTbyCITROEN features an electric drive train powered by a fuel cell with no pollutant emissions. It is a car designed to square up to the strongest competition.

• Performance first and foremost
GTbyCITROEN is geared to the world of motor racing, with its dynamic styling, sculpted lines and sharp graphics. The rear end is oversized, made exaggeratedly long in order to create an effect of retinal persistence. The idea is to make the concept car even faster visually. The white-to-grey gradation on the body side further underlines this impression of continuous movement.

• Top-level driving
The cabin of GTbyCITROEN, designed to seat two adults, expresses the grand touring vision behind this show-car. The on-board ambience allies premium, extensively worked materials with a more high-tech effect for the driving position. The layout of the low driving position was dictated by driving pleasure. The aim is for the driver to be able to concentrate on the road, assisted by a head-up display clearly displaying driving information.

With its flowing lines, original architecture and its use – in the game – of what is potentially the best environmental technology, GTbyCITROEN embodies the sporting spirit as seen by Citroлn and underlines the Marque's ambitions to meet new challenges.

Citroen C3 Pluriel Charleston special edition at Paris auto show

This year, the legendary Citroen 2CV will celebrate its 60th anniversary and, some time ago, we were wondering how Citroen will mark this moment. Not as impressive as we would’ve expected, but who knows, maybe that’s not all.

Citroen C3 Pluriel Charleston is a special edition of the French cabrio finished in a two-tone color scheme of black and bordeaux red. Other extras include new 15” alloy wheels, and a special interior with gloss-black fittings, leather upholstery and chrome trim.

Citroen Hypnos Concept

Citroen has a history of stretching the design envelope to the outer edges, at least, that was the case in bygone days with cars like the DS and Maserati powered SM.

But with the current C4 and C6, they have redeemed themselves from a certain path down conservative lane. Even the 2008 C5 is a beautiful thing.

Their new concept, the Citroen Hypnos, a cutting edge concept, will be revealed at the Paris Motor Show this year and is sure to be a hit exhibit.

While it has the styling of a Coupe and the practicality of a sedan, interior space is more akin to an SUV.

The Hypnos is powered by hybrid technology with a 200 hp engine with ultra low fuel consumption and emissions (4.5 litres/100 kms & 120g/km).

Citroen C3 Picasso exclusive pictures

Citroen today announces the C3 Picasso, a supermini-MPV it claims has the innovative magic of the company’s DS masterpiece, the ‘useful and beautiful’ approach of Apple’s iPhone and the unblinking practicality needed to wound the market-leading Vauxhall/Opel Meriva.

The spacious, eye-catching MPV goes on UK sale in summer 2009. It’s based on the next-generation C3 supermini, and runs four-cylinder engines turning the front wheels. Expect a starting price just under £11,000.

‘The C3 Picasso is more than an MPV, it’s so innovative,’ said Gilles Michel, Citroen boss, who announced the car during a press conference this morning (8 July 2008). Actually, it’s not that innovative but the package is superbly focused on satisfying the punter.

Citroen has designed the C3 Picasso with unbending, Teutonic discipline, to give it class-leading practicality. CAR was treated to a sneak preview last month, and sat through a presentation which compared the baby Picasso’s metrics with key rivals the Vauxhall Meriva, Ford Fusion, Nissan Note and Renault Grand Modus.

Chinese Citroen C-Elysee Unveiled

Citroen and Peugeot have been present in the Chinese market since 1992, and have a small range of cars to show for it. Starting with the Chinese Citroen C2 (a Peugeot 206 with Citroen badge), Fukang, Xsara Picasso, C-Triomphe and the Elysee while the remainder is imported from Europe (C4 Coupe, C5 saloon and C6).

Today Citroen unveiled a new model for China, the Citroen C-Elysee which is based on the Elysee but with 300 perceivable improvements in regards to styling, quality and technology. The Citroen C-Elysee will have its official show debut at the upcoming 2008 Auto China in Beijing. The new C-Elysee comes in three trim levels and five versions, all powered by the 1.6i 16V engine.

Citroen has graced the C-Elysee with its new front end design, aswell as new wheels and three-dimensional rear lights. Citroen has put as many gadgets into the budget car as possible, like ABS brakes, while a Bluetooth audio system, 6 CD hard-disk jukebox and USB socket are optional.

Citroen C4 Picasso Lounge

Citroen really has got junior MPVs down to a fine art. The C4 Picasso represents attractive and innovative family transport, and it’s great value, too.

But the French firm believes there is room for a more exclusive variant – one that blends all the style with greater luxury. Enter the new range-topping C4 Picasso Lounge.

Designed solely for sale in the UK market, the Lounge is only available with the 2.0-litre HDi diesel engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. It adds £1,900 to the price of the Exclusive model on which it’s based – which means the newcomer weighs in at a rather hefty £23,995.

Climb inside, and it’s immediately obvious where the money is spent. The standard five-seat Picasso interior has been replaced by four individual leather-trimmed chairs, each featuring adjustable head and armrests.

The driving position is very upright, so some owners may struggle to get comfortable. Selecting Drive using the slender column-mounted stick is simple, but the electronic handbrake takes a frustrating 10 seconds to disengage.

Once up and running, the Picasso is slow to convert the engine’s power into forward motion, leading to jerky acceleration from a standstill.

But overall, the driving experience is compromised for a car that’s intended to pamper its four occupants. So while the Lounge is an intriguing concept, Citroen top brass might find that – as with the Avantime from rival Renault – buyers aren’t particularly drawn towards a model with the size but not the practicality of an MPV.

Citroen C1 Code

Only a few months after its launch in the UK, the Fiat 500’s cute, retro looks and effortless class have forced other brands to raise their game.

And that’s what Citroen has done with the Code, the latest evolution of its capable C1 city car. The idea is simple – create the most luxurious C1 to date. But is it a classic case of over-egging the pudding? Using the range-topping Rhythm trim as a starting point, Code spec piles on the options, including 14-inch alloy wheels and black metallic paint.

On the road, in common with other versions that we have tested, the new C1 provides a frantic and fun driving experience. Its peppy 1.0-litre engine occasionally lacks power, but makes up for any shortfall by offering plenty of enthusiasm.

With the effortlessly light steering and a raspy exhaust note, the C1 is entertaining. In corners, there’s no sliding around in the seats, although that has more to do with the Alcantara providing some resistance than any sign of bolstering. There’s also a feeling of being connected to the road surface that you simply don’t get in a larger car.

In terms of practicality, you have to choose whether you want to carry four occupants without much of a boot, or fold the rear seats down to create a reasonable loading space, but have room for only two. Either way, the C1 is impressively economical, returning 60mpg on the combined cycle and emitting only 109g/km of CO2.

So does the C1 Code work as a package? Well, while you can currently snap one up for £7,945 with some cashback offers, the five-door we drove costs £8,795. And that’s the same as a mid-spec Fiat Panda 1.2 – which provides a big step up in comfort and space.

New Citroen Berlingo

We waited. We were patient. And this is what Santa's French cousin brought us: a tiny utility van. We were hoping the predictions were wrong and that with its "C-Reveal" new product page, Citroen might give us something a little more exciting, like maybe the C5 Cabrio. But instead we got the Berlingo.

The new Berlingo is available either as a passenger vehicle (or Leisure Activity Vehicle, as Citroen imaginatively calls it) or as a slab-sided Light Commercial Vehicle. Citroen sold over 1.76 million examples of the outgoing Berlingo, which has been on the market since 1996 (with a facelift in 2002) and which will stay on in the meantime as the lower-priced Berlingo First.

The new Berlingo uses running gear from the bigger, more civilized C4 Picasso minivan. It also grows in size over the old model and gets one of those new HDi particulate-filter diesels the French are so good at.

2007 Citroen Nemo Concetto

After presenting Nemo at the Road Transport Show in Amsterdam in October 2007, Citroen is displaying NEMO CONCETTO at the 2007 Bologna Motor Show. Nemo Concetto is a take on a concept car based on Nemo, a compact, practical and intelligent vehicle that lends itself particularly well to this type of exercise.

Nemo Concetto is a nod to Disney's clown fish hero, with its orange and white colour scheme. It illustrates the world and values of Nemo, as well as highlighting the many possible ways of customising this vehicle.

Nemo Concetto illustrates the astonishing closeness between the Citroen Nemo and its clown fish homonym. Like the fish, Nemo Concetto can be considered as "small" among its peers. However, its size is an asset, since it is able to nip in and out of traffic easily.

In a world where it would be tempting to think that bigger is better, Nemo Concetto combines intelligent design with compact exterior dimensions and interior space. It shows that intelligence is the most important asset, whatever the environment. Nemo Concetto does not claim to be what it is not. It clearly states its identity with a new take on conventional automotive cues.
