Ford Ka 1.3 TDCI Zetec

With its cheeky looks and fun handling the original Ford Ka has been the favourite small car of a whole generation of drivers. And as we found in our exclusive drive of the 1.2-litre petrol last week (Issue 1036) the all-new model looks set to continue the success story.

Ford Ka -2Ford Ka -1This time around, the Ka has another string to its bow – it's available with a diesel. The 1.3-litre unit is the same as the unit which is fitted to its sister car, the Fiat 500, and on the road its 74bhp output means the little oil burner delivers punchier acceleration than 1.2-litre petrol versions.

It’s also smooth enough around town to compliment the light controls. Only available in top spec Zetec trim the diesel commands a £700 premium over the equivalent petrol so it’s the only Ka to break the £10,000 barrier.

Nevertheless, emissions drop to 112g/km, while claimed economy is an impressive 67.3mpg. While diesels currently account for just four per cent of the UK city car market, CO2-based taxation means their popularity is sure to grow. And with Ford expecting 40 per cent of Ka sales to be Zetec models the little diesel should be a big seller.

With new bushes the front axle has been tightened too and with the help of retuned dampers this has allowed Ford to soften the springs by 30 per cent. And the end result is less body roll, a better ride and far more engaging handling. The electric power steering has been reworked too and it’s sharper, better weighted and more communicative than the 500’s.

Audi TT-S starts at $45,500

Audi announced today that pricing for its U.S.-spec TT-S will begin at $45,500 for the Coupe model and $47,500 for the open-air Roadster. The TT-S joins the TT 2.0T and TT 3.2 in Audi's lineup, settling atop the range with a turbocharged, direct-inject 2.0L TFSI engine producing 265 hp @ 6,000 RPM and 258 lb-ft of torque. That's 15 more horsepower and 22 more lb-ft of torque than the TT with Audi's 3.2L V6.

Audi TT-S -2Audi TT-S -1The TT-S Coupe also manages to hit 60 mph in an impressive 4.9 seconds while achieving a combined fuel economy rating of 24 mpg. Top speed for both the Coupe and Roadster, however, will be electronically limited to 155 mph. For their money, buyers will also get Audi's S tronic dual-clutch transmission, magnetic ride suspension and the brand's trademark quattro all-wheel-drive system.

If the TT-S is still not fast enough for you, the TT-RS is on its way. While it may not make it to U.S. shores, the TT-RS will pack a 2.5-liter TFSI five-cylinder producing 340 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque, which will be mated to a six-speed manual and quattro all-wheel-drive. 0-60 times for the TT-RS are expected to drop even further down to 4.5 seconds. Expect the price to also go up even further in turn.

Kizashi concept spied

Suzuki’s Kizashi 3 concept has hit the road and our spies have managed to get the best pictures yet of the Mondeo-rivalling newcomer.

Kizashi concept -2
Kizashi concept -1Not set to go on sale until 2010 this is the first time the concept has been spied in the metal testing since it made its debut in New York earlier this year.

Despite the confusing disguise on this test model, it’s clear to see the road car will keep most of the concepts original styling. The main exterior changes have been made to the roofline which is not as raked and now looks more conventional. The swirling alloy wheels have also been dropped and the lights and air-intakes have been replaced leaving a less dramatic looking car.

Engine details are still unconfirmed but it is rumoured the Kizashi will either be getting either an all-wheel-drive 300bhp, 3.6-litre V6 or a front-wheel-driven 2.5-litre four-cylinder unit.

The Kizashi is likely to be manufactured in Suzuki’s new Indian manufacturing plant in Delhi before being shipped around the world. Expect a competitive price tag too.

Rinspeed Xtreme Porsche Cayenne by Toyo Tires

Toyo revealed the vehicle that will be presented at the SEMA Show: the Rinspeed Xtreme Porsche Cayenne. The new vehicle will be fitted with Toyo (of course) Proxes SR II tires and will feature a new suspension kit in order to improve the stability of the SUV.

Rinspeed Xtreme Porsche Cayenne It doesn’t seem that there are any engine modifications. It would make sense if it this Cayenne just came for the Toyo Tire guys, but because Rinspeed is attached too, we were hoping for a cool scuba mod or at least a few more horses.

Bugatti plans Sang Noir version of the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport

Bugatti is going from ultra-exclusive to uber-exclusive with the Veyron Grand Sport. The company has promised to make only 150 examples of the open top Veyron, and yet it feels the need to make a speciality version. According to Car the Veryon 16.4 Grand Sport will have a Sang Noir edition limited to only 15 units (like the coupe version) and will be launched after the "normal" 987bhp Grand Sport becomes available to customers in April.

Bugatti VeyronIt’s likely that the Grand Sport version will carry similar traits to the coupe. This means a redesigned front grille, a black background for the headlights, side mirrors featuring same color as the front grille, deep black exterior paint and custom alloy wheels in black.

McLaren F1 sold for £2.5 million

RM Auctions sold a 1997 McLaren F1 for £2.530.000 (about $4.12 million at current rates). Although this does not come close to the all time record set by a Ferrari GTO for $28.5 million, it does set a new record for McLaren F1 prices and is about four times the origional sales price a little over a decade ago.

McLaren F1The McLaren F1 is powered by a BMW sourced 6.1-liter V12 engine that delivers 627 hp at 7,400 rpm. In March 1998, the F1 hit a record speed of 240.14 mph. It held this record until February 2005 when it was broken by a Koenigsegg CCR going 242.2 mph.

The F1 wasn’t the only high dollar car of the day. The auctions sold a 1965 Ferrari 250 LM Berlinetta and a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France each for a price of £2,255,000. A 1938 Horch 853 Special Roadster was sold for £1,127,500 and a 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Atalante for £660,000.

Infiniti G37 S

Meet Infiniti’s answer to the BMW 3-Series. Nissan’s luxury brand launches next spring, and the G37 is being billed as an alternative saloon for buyers wanting something distinctive on their drive.

All models in the Infiniti range use a 3.7-litre V6 engine with a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed auto gearboxes, as well as four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering. Standard equipment is generous, too, with only top-end goodies such as intelligent cruise control, brake assist and a Bose stereo system as options.

Infiniti G37 S-1Infiniti G37 S-2Infiniti has been firmly established in the US since 1989, and with its wide grille, odd-shaped lights and jutting rear bumper, the G37’s American influence is clear to see. Inside, the cabin is well built, but the dash and steering wheel plastics feel cheap and can’t match the standards of rivals. Another niggle is with the boot. There’s plenty of space inside, but there’s no external release on the bootlid – you have to push a button on the dash even if the whole car is unlocked.

Fiddly technology aside, the G37 delivers some old-school fun. With its 316bhp petrol V6, it is certainly big on power. Blip the throttle and the twin oval tailpipes emit a growl which is more to the tune of a V8 than a six. On smooth roads, the G37 is a superb cruiser, and overtaking is instant, thanks to the 360Nm of torque on offer.

Meaty steering, wide tyres and the four-wheel-steer system on our test car made for a grippy and engaging drive. However, the suspension is too firm for anything other than motorways, and the ride is harsh, considering this is supposed to be a luxury car. It might be generously specced, but the Infiniti can’t match the likes of BMW in terms of ride, economy or practicality.

BMW 6 Series Prototype Spied

BMW’s next-generation 6 Series coupe and convertible, expected to be introduced in 2011, have been spied in early testing. Though heavily camouflaged, the convertible in our photos looks to be longer and lower than the current car, with considerably tighter overhangs front and rear. It’s hard to see the exact lines of course, but the new 6 Series has a smoother, more streamlined look.

BMW 6 Series Prototype -1BMW 6 Series Prototype -2The vehicle spotted testing in Germany has a cloth soft top, but closer examination suggests that this may also be part of the camouflage. The wrapped decklid gives the impression that this is a convertible, so the next 6’er just might sport a retractable hardtop, to compete with Mercedes’ SL.

2009 LSE Coupe

At first glance, the 2009 LSE Coupe partly resembles a Range Rover Sport, but if you take a closer look, you’ll notice that instead of four doors, there’s only two—that’s exactly what LSE Design UK CEO Andrew Green wanted you to think. “We designed the car to look like it just rolled out of the manufacturer’s factory; not as if a tuning firm got their hands on it,” he describes. “We wanted it to look natural, so that when people look at it, they wouldn’t be able to see the differences compared to a regular Range Rover Sport.”

LSE -1LSE -2For the past 18 months, LSE Design UK designers have been hard at work creating the LSE Coupe to officially unveil at this year’s SEMA Show. Green also raced the Coupe in this past summer’s 10th Anniversary of the Gumball 3000 Rally. Though official specs haven’t been released yet, Green did mention that all the body panels on the LSE Coupe have been redesigned, creating a subtle, but unique look from its original platform. LED lights surrounding the exterior give it a dramatic look, while its panoramic sunroof, 2+2 seating and light performance upgrades definitely sets it apart.

Starting at a base price of $250,000, LSE Coupe owners can fully customize their ride with additional upgrades that allow you to personalize it to your specifications. Under the hood, the standard engine revs out about 500 horsepower, but those who want an extra boost can opt for numerous performance upgrades, such as an ECU enhancement. LSE Design UK is also currently working on building different engine options and a twin-turbo variant.

Additional amenity extras include: shades from a never-ending palate of choices offered from House of Kolor paints; aluminum and metal interior accessories (LSE is working with manufacturers who also do the interior for Bentley, Bugatti and Rolls-Royce); diamond-studded accessories like the speedometer with an individual jewel for each 10 mph increment on the dial; leather, Alacantra and suede interior; tunable exhaust system; performance brake upgrades and so much more. Basically, you pick out what you want your LSE to have, and they’ll ship it to you just the way you want it!

While they are in a partnership with Land Rover, LSE worked out a deal that would allow them to sell the coachbuilt SUV through selected Land Rover dealerships across the country and even provide service under an LSE warranty. While specs are still being announced, Green did mention that LSE will hopefully be coming out with electric variants of the LSE Coupe in the future, as well as a long wheel base Range Rover and maybe even their own coachbuilt SUT.

2009 Hyundai Grandeur

The 2009 model Grandeur, still based on the Sonata platform, has received minor revisions to the styling and trim both inside and out but the really significant changes are a below $40,000 base price for the V6 petrol engine car and the introduction of a new 2.2-litre CRDi turbo-diesel, first seen in the Hyundai Santa Fe SUV.

2009 Hyundai Grandeur-12009 Hyundai Grandeur-2Hyundai is certainly hoping the price drop will help it shift the Grandeur at a better rate than has been the case to date. Having opened sales in 2006 with 541 leaving dealers, by last year this figure was back to 267 and up to September this year just 90 Grandeurs had been sold.

The problem is that any large car is a hard prospect to shift in the current economic climate, and that’s even harder when you are a company that has made a name by selling small cars cheaply. Hyundai hopes the reposition of its price and simplifying the model to just one specification with a choice of engines will make it more appealing to buyers.

In addition to the 3.8-litre V6 petrol engine, which has been the standard fare in the Grandeur to date, the 2009 model will be offered with a 2.2-litre CRDi turbo-diesel engine. The diesel engine develops 114kW of power at 4000rpm and 343Nm of torque between 1800rpm and 2500rpm.

Both engines use a five-speed automatic gearbox with Selectronic manual shifting and claimed fuel consumption for the diesel is a reasonable, for a large car, 7.9 litres per 100km, while the petrol car claims 10.8 litres per 100km. There is no change in the performance specifications of the 3.8-litre V6 with 194kW of power at 6000rpm and 348Nm of torque at 4500rpm.

The petrol engined car has been reduced in price from $42,990 to $39,990, while the diesel powered Grandeur is priced at $41,990. The only option is metallic/mica paint at $375. Changes to the exterior include a new radiator grille, chrome inserts in the front and rear bumpers, indicators in the door mirrors and new style 17-inch alloy wheels.

2009 Bentley Continental GT Speed

Bentley Continental GT Speed weighs a staggering 2350kg and can travel at an obscenely fast 326km/h (that’s 202mph) the first Bentley production car to hit the crash through the 200mph barrier. Acceleration from 0-100km/h will take you just 4.5 seconds or quicker than BMW’s M5. Not only that, the Speed can match the M5 in the S-bends too.

2009 Bentley Continental GT Speed-12009 Bentley Continental GT Speed-22009 Bentley Continental GT Speed-3Although the engine is essentially the same as in the standard Continental GT, its been tuned to deliver more grunt. Step on the drilled alloy accelerator pedal and get ready for a serious g-force assault. Initially – it feels like the Bugatti Veyron boosting up, as the torque driven acceleration for a car of these proportions, seems positively unnatural.

Power is up nine percent to 449kW and torque has jumped by 15 percent to a huge 750Nm. Despite the substantial increase though, the Speed is only marginally quicker than its GT sibling. Either way, life at full throttle in any Bentley Continental GT, is just a blur.

The Speed’s extra wide 20-inch, 26-spoke forged alloys (the GT gets 19-inch wheels) would have to rate as the word’s best looking wheels, and shod with specially made Pirelli 275/30ZR20 P-ZERO rubber, grip levels through tight bends mean that the laws of physics as I know them, have been re-written by the Bentley boys.

However, when you are dealing in the over $420,000 league, standard is never enough, and optional carbon ceramics are all but mandatory, despite the $30,000 price tag. As always, you get what you pay for, try 420mm x 40mm cross-drilled front discs and 356mm on the rear with eight-piston callipers! With over $450,000 worth of car sitting in your driveway its hard not to feel better than the bloke next door with his unwashed diesel powered VW Polo, but at least he owns his!

Aston Martin DBS Touchtronic

It’s the pinnacle of the Aston Martin line up and the car of choice for James Bond. And now for the first time the stunning DBS can be ordered with the British firm's Touchtronic gearbox.

Aston Martin DBS-1Aston Martin DBS-2The transmission of choice on 90 per cent of standard DB9’s the automatic gearbox has been reworked to suit the sporty nature of the DBS. Aston Martin’s engineers contemplated using the automated manual Sportshift unit from the smaller Vantage but decided that despite its more traditional torque converter set up the automatic Touchtronic could offer the right blend of usability and involvement to keep DBS customers happy.

And the end result is very impressive – when driven in conventional auto mode the gearbox makes the DBS easy to live with in traffic and it copes with low speed manoeuvring better than the automated manual in the Vantage. But given the DBS’s power and focused handling, plenty of driver interaction is crucial and thankfully the steering wheel mounted paddles offer excellent control and a lovely throttle blip on the downshift. The upshifts are 15 per cent faster than in the standard DB9 and if you press the Sport button they are 25 per cent quicker. In addition to making up changes faster the Sport button also gives you a sportier throttle response.

Crucially, if you change up a gear at half throttle the changes are smoother than the Vantage’s Sportshift transmission too and with a shorter final drive ratio, despite being 30kg heavier, the Touchtronic DBS matches the manual’s 0-100mph performance.

Not only that, emissions drop from 388g/km to 367g/km, while claimed combined economy rises from 17.2mpg to a still scary 18.2mpg. But then fuel costs are not high on the list of super car owners concerns and even with its £3,000 price premium over the manual it’s no surprise that Aston Martin predict that the Touchtronic will account for 75 per cent of future DBS orders.

2010 Porsche BoxsterCayman leakage

Hyundai i20

Hitting the big time in small cars has become the holy grail for motor makers desperate to survive our current cash-strapped climate. Hyundai didn’t manage that with its pedestrian Getz. Now it’s hoping that car’s successor, the i20, will be able to take the fight to big guns such as the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Polo.

Hyundai i20-1Hyundai i20-2The i20 is longer, lower and wider than the Getz, so while its predecessor was instantly forgettable, the newcomer is rather stylish. There’s neat detailing around the front and pronounced lines that run the length of the doors. In terms of looks, the i20 is not unlike a cross between a Mazda 2 and the Corsa.

The five-door that we drove will be in showrooms in January, while the three-door – which is simply shorter, rather than a different shape – comes four months later. Inside, Hyundai has played it safe. The design is functional and clear, and looks stylish without resorting to gimmicks. And as with the exterior, it’s all very well put together with tight, accurate lines around panels.

Boot space is a handy 295 litres, which is bigger than either the Corsa or new Fiesta. And while the rear seats don’t perform the one-touch folding tricks of the Honda Jazz, they do split and fold flat, although the seat backs are slightly higher than the boot floor. Put them back up, and there’s space for a six-footer to sit behind another six-footer. Headroom is generous for rear seat passengers, as is foot space, while legroom is the only constraint.

Where the i20 really scores is with standard kit. Even the entry-level Classic gets air-con, CD player, MP3 socket and electric windows. Owners of the i20 will also get six airbags as standard and active head restraints which move forwards to cushion against whiplash injuries. These are measures Hyundai believes will lead to the car winning five stars in Euro NCAP’s safety tests. The firm estimates the i20 will be priced around £1,000 less than the equivalent Fiesta, so the range should start at about £8,000.

The Korean firm is further appealing to our rediscovered thriftiness with the engines on offer. The range includes the 1.2-litre petrol used in the i10, plus the i30’s 1.4-litre unit. But the headline grabbers will be the 75bhp and 90bhp 1.4-litre diesels that both return 64.2mpg and 116g/km of CO2. The 90bhp oil-burner is a relaxed cruiser, although you have to work it surprisingly hard for any turn of speed. The i20’s new chassis is a big step forward over the lacklustre Getz. It corners with composure, and the electric power-steering is responsive and accurate.

2009 Nissan 370Z official images

Following the mass hype surrounding spy shots of the prototype car around the Nürburgring, Nissan has released the first official images of its highly anticipated 370Z Coupe. These official images confirm what many suspected regarding the design of the new coupe, including the Maxima-inspired headlamps and tail lights.

2009 Nissan 370Z-12009 Nissan 370Z-22009 Nissan 370Z-3However Nissan has now also indirectly confirmed that the new Z car will use the 3.7-litre VQ37VHR V6 engine by officially referring to the new model as the 370Z for the first time.

This same engine is currently used in the Infiniti G37 Coupe where it develops around 246kW; however this is speculated to have jumped by as much as 15kW for the 370Z. Nissan has boasted that this new model would target the German sports coupes, having used the BMW Z4 M and Porsche Cayman S as benchmarks during development.

This also supports current speculation which suggests the 370Z could eventually be offered with an optional DSG transmission, given its recent inclusion in the Porsche range as well as the success of Nissan’s own DSG transmission in the GT-R.

The all-new 370Z will go on sale in Europe from early 2009. Full details and specifications are set to be released on to coincide with its global debut on November 19.

Mercedes-Benz CLK Cabriolet spied

While at first this may appear to be the new CLK Coupe, a second glance reveals this latest prototype from Mercedes boasts a folding hard top roof.

Mercedes-Benz CLK Cabriolet-2Mercedes-Benz CLK Cabriolet-1While the camouflage for the most part disguises the roofline, a joint between the windshield and roof clearly indicates this is the next-generation CLK Cabriolet.

Other subtle revisions support this inference such as the heavily disguised C-pillar and longer boot lid.

The new CLK twins will be based on the current C-Class saloon, with predictable revisions to the chassis in order to meet its performance expectations.

The engine line-up will be largely carried over from the C-Class range, including a V8 power plant for the CLK 500.

The CLK Coupe version is expected to arrive in Europe by summer 2009, with the Cabriolet version following a few months later.

Audi S4 Avant

It has been 76 years since Audi last used a supercharged engine in one of its cars. Instead, it has favoured compact turbos for some its most famous sporting models, including the legendary Quattro coupé.

Audi S4 Avant-2Audi S4 Avant-1But the blower is back in fashion at Audi, and there’s one under the bonnet of the latest S4. The new 328bhp 3.0-litre V6 is smaller and slightly less powerful than the 339bhp 4.2-litre V8 of the previous S4, but more importantly, it packs more torque – another 30Nm at 440Nm. And with 90 per cent of that thrust available from 2,200rpm, it promises to be a responsive drive. On paper, the figures are certainly impressive, with a 0-60mph time of 5.4 seconds and a top speed limited to 155mph. Thanks to the engine’s smaller capacity, there are improvements in efficiency, too, so the new S4 returns 29.4mpg combined and emits 224g/km of CO2.

Once on the road, all thoughts of economy vanish as you explore the engine’s power. The quad exhaust pipes emit a pleasing growl as the rev counter sweeps around the dial, and that torque really makes itself known – no matter what gear you’re in. Only a faint whine from the supercharger reminds you how it manages this feat.

But this car is about so much more than just a big engine. For a start, the S4 is available with Audi’s new seven-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission, which debuted on the Q5 compact SUV (see Issue 1,025), as well as a bespoke six-speed manual. The company expects the former to be the biggest seller in the UK, and we can see why. Full throttle upshifts are executed quickly, while the downshifts are accompanied by a pleasing blip of the throttle to smooth out the changes. Steering wheel-mounted paddleshifters complete the set-up.

While the standard A4 is a handsome car, the flagship adds some trademark S-style muscle. There are aluminium-look mirror housings, 18-inch alloys, two pairs of chrome exhaust tips and subtle badging. Overall it looks purposeful, but restrained, particularly in Avant estate form driven here, although it may not be aggressive enough for some buyers.

2012 BMW 8 Series CGI

The first of our computer generated images through this morning show BMW’s stunning new saloon car, the 8 Series, as a longer, more sleek rival to the Mercedes Benz CLS.

2012 BMW 8 Series CGI-22012 BMW 8 Series CGI-1Though information is scarce at this point, the pics draw strong resemblance to the Concept CS seen at Shanghai Motor Show last year.

We predict the 8 Series will be based on the underpinnings of the new 7 Series (due late this year) and will be a four seat luxury rival to challenge the likes of Mercedes Benz’s aforementioned CLS as well as the forth coming Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide.

It is likely the 8 Series will be of aluminium and carbon fibre construction to reduce weight and is rumoured to be powered by a 6.0-litre V12 engine that will be manufactured by adding two cylinders to BMW’s existing V10 engine as found in the M5.

We’ll be sure to bring you more news on the 8 Series as it comes to hand.

Bentley Continental GTC Speed spied

These are the first images of what will become the convertible version of the Bentley GT Speed - likely to be named the GTC Speed.

Spied here at the Nurburgring, it will become the fastest drop-top Bentley has built in its 90-year long history.

Bentley Continental GTC Speed -1Bentley Continental GTC Speed -2Power is likely to be on par with its hard-top sibling, developing around 550kW from its twin-turbocharged W12 engine.

From a standstill, the GTC Speed should take just 4.5 seconds to reach 100km/h and keep going to a top speed beyond 320km/h.

As with its ‘Speed’ spec coupe sibling, the GTC Speed will boast wider wheels compared to the standard GT and more prominent exhaust pipes.

However to accommodate its folding roof, it seems the rear spoiler has shrunk slightly.

2009 Mazda3 MPS spied at Nürburgring

Crowned by most as the performance-hatch king, the hotly anticipated successor to the Mazda3 MPS has been spied lapping the Nürburgring.

2009 Mazda3 MPS-12009 Mazda3 MPS-2To ensure there is no mistaking this hot-hatch for its naturally-aspirated siblings, Mazda has included a seemingly WRX-inspired hood scoop and oversized spoiler.

Sources confirm that the new model will again be powered by the current 2.3-litre turbocharged unit expected to produce an identical 190kW.

This leads to question if this is strictly a make-over or whether Mazda has thrown in a few additional performance goodies.

This next-generation MPS certainly has a rather impressive twin from which to borrow inspiration - namely the new Ford Focus RS and its highly acclaimed RevoKnuckle suspension system which apparently eliminates the need for all-wheel drive.

Kahn Rexton R

Last time we covered SsangYong we noted with concern the Koreans’ lack of new hot products to sizzle the market and get people interested in the brand. Not sure if they listened, but Project Kahn certainly did, well, after a fair amount of convincing from SsangYong. With very little to work from, admitted Afzal Kahn himself, they didn’t underestimate the task at hand concerning this Rexton tune-up, now called Kahn Rexton R-Line post-makeover.

Kahn Rexton RSix months later the results are there for all to see, and Kahn is rightly proud of the work done. He was heard to say: “I believe we have delivered an outstanding product that proves there we know exactly what we are doing and can add our touch to any car. I challenge anyone to bring me any car and I will give it that unique edge.”

Work involved lowering the 7-seater SUV’s all-round independent suspension, inserting a bespoke Kahn exhaust system, 22-inch Kahn Design alloy wheels and Mercedes-Benz T-Tronic gearbox to run that 4x4 arrangement. Laziness-boosters include parking sensors, hill descent control, heatable (is that a real word?) seats and an optional Kenwood nav system. The latter plus a rear spoiler happen to be the only options for this £29,995 package.

Renault Sandero F1 Team Ready for Alonso

It’s like giving your kid a red cape and calling him Superman. It’s like getting plus-sized actor Jack Black a bicycle and telling him he can race the Tour de France. Dear Renault, how come, why’d you do it? You know the Renaultsport F1 badge is a coveted one, not worn by any old thing. Yet Renault has seen it fit to give it to a Sandero and Logan, cars we don’t particularly have anything against on their own.

Renault Sandero F1 -1Renault Sandero F1 -2But once that RS thing gets going, that badge, that yellow, those stripes, we kinda expect a bit more. This time we didn’t get more. Actually, we feel slightly shortchanged. Decals and yellow paint aside, why should people pay extra for these two cars? Maybe by the time the cars show up at the Sao Paulo Auto Show 2008, more would have been added for that real va va voom. For now it feels just like when you order a burger that looks so big in the picture, but seems to have shrunk when the waiter delivers it.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Super Trofeo

While Ferrari has always been primarily a motorsport company which delved into road-going super cars, Lamborghini’s lack of motorsport heritage has lingered as a blemish on its performance reputation - a result of founder Ferruccio Lamborghini dismissing any involvement as being unprofitable.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Super Trofeo-2Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Super Trofeo-1Now under the direction of Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini has today announced ‘The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo’ – the world’s fastest one-make series.

The series will debut in May 2009 comprising a grid of 30 lightweight versions of the Gallardo LP 560-4 super sports car.

The Super Trofeo edition LP 560-4 racers boast a reworked chassis with double wishbone suspension all round, a specialist racing brake system and Pirelli slick racing tyres.

Carbon-fibre composite body components such as the fixed rear wing combine with an ultra-light racing seat, racing steering wheel and specialized instruments for a total weight of just 1,300kg.

A race-spec version of its 5.2-litre V10 engine develops 419kW through its e.gear six-speed robotized gear box to the permanent all-wheel drive with viscous traction, making the Super Trofeo the only one-make, all-wheel drive motorsport series in the world.

Lamborghini Dream garage – video

There’s not much extra information on this video, but that doesn’t matter because it speaks for itself. One suggestion was that this was a meeting of a Lamborghini car club. Which would make sense considering why would an upper middle class home have five Lamborghini (Countachs over Diablos and a Diablo in the garage.) Then again why would an upper middle class home have such cool car storage?

2009 Lorinser Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

Renowned German tuner Lorinser has released its latest tuning package for the new 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, but didn’t really bother to do any upgrades under the hood and focused on its exterior styling instead. The super-tuner thought the 517 horsepower from the SL 600’s V12 engine would be good enough for you to enjoy.

2009 Lorinser Mercedes-Benz SL-Class-12009 Lorinser Mercedes-Benz SL-Class-2To enhance aerodynamics and the look of the new 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL, Lorinser added a new front spoiler bumper with racing grille inserts, new side skirts and a new rear bumper with a diffuser that can houses a four-pipe exhaust system. 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart

The hot hatch market has pretty much been a two horse race to date, Volkswagen’s iconic GTi or Subaru’s WRX – but enter the tough new kid on the block, the Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart, and that’s all changed. Mitsubishi’s product planning guy, and the man responsible for getting its product to market, is Chris Maxted and he’s very confident the new Lancer Ralliart Sportback and Sedan will sell at least 150 a month, with supply constrained by the availability of the sensational dual clutch, SST gearbox.

2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart-12009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart-22009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart-3Lancer Ralliart is just the car for the person who might want the thrill of an EVO X but either doesn’t want to drive something that hard edged or cannot justify the $60,000+ spend. As the spiritual descendant of the much-lamented Lancer GSR the all-wheel drive, turbocharged Lancer Ralliart is effectively a detuned version of the high-performance EVO X.

According to Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) president and chief executive officer, Robert McEniry, the Lancer Ralliart is targeted squarely at a specific audience. Available in either Sportback or Sedan body styles, the Lancer Ralliart shares a retuned version of the 4B11, 2.0-litre turbocharged and intercooled DOHC four-cylinder engine that powers the Lancer Evolution.

Lancer Ralliart will share much of the technical enhancements that make the Lancer Evolution a dynamically superior vehicle when it comes to active safety, handling and vehicle control. The all-wheel drive system – called All Wheel Control - includes Active Traction Control, Active Stability Control, Anti-lock Braking System with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist.

The Lancer Ralliart has 18×7.0JJ alloy wheels with 215/45R18 89W tyres, again carried over from the VRX, and Mr Maxted admitted that Mitsubishi would have liked a unique wheel for the Ralliart but none suitable were available in time for the release.

The Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart will be available in Cool Silver, Red Metallic, Solid White, Black Mica or Lightning Blue. It’s definitely a great addition to the ‘hot hatch’ segment of the market and one that will certainly threaten the major players.

Volkswagen SP-2 Concept

Designer Marcelo Rosa has gone retro but not much of the world knows it. He has put together a modern interpretation of the Volkswagen SP2, that can possibly be based on the VW Scirocco.

Volkswagen SP-2 Concept-1Volkswagen SP-2 Concept-2Although this design study is somewhat of a retomobile, the SP2 name doesn’t mean much to people out side of Brazil and die-hard Volkswagen fans. In the 70s, strict import laws meant that Volkswagen’s Brazilian subsidiary had to rely on itself to make a sports car. The result was the SP2: a great execution in design, with a lack luster engine. The SP2 was based around the Squareback, which itself was based on the original Beetle. It only had 75 hp (it’s predecessor the SP1 had only 65hp,) which did not help sales, and a little over 10,000 were produced over a five-year run.

Now that Volkswagen has bigger engines, a Scirocco-based SP2 may just be the right kind of budget-minded performance coupe to gain some real attention.

Hyundai Portico spied

Today we've got new photos of the Hyundai with most of the heavy camouflage removed! First shown as a 2005 Portico concept in Chicago, Hyundai is hoping their R-Class-like crossover will pick up the pieces where Mercedes and Chrysler’s Pacifica failed.

Hyundai Portico -1Hyundai Portico -2Flexible seating for the Portico means two rows of seating for 4 or 6 depending if the center seat is folded down or upright. With six passengers in two rows - the Portico will offer more cargo area than similarly sized vehicles.

Hyundai's Lambda 3.3-liter V6 is expected to be rated at around 240hp. In 3.8-liter form 290hp should provide ample motivation for the top of the Portico trim range. Hyundai's new 6-speed shiftronic transmission will route the power to a FWD or AWD setup. Hybrid and 4-cylinder powerplants are unknown despite earlier reports. While the Portico was slated to be built in Alabama, production has now shifted to Korea and will start in the 3rd quarter of 2009.

2009 Carlsson Mercedes-Benz CK63 S

(from Carlsson Press Release) Even racier - even better: CARLSSON CK63 S (Basis C 63 AMG)

- Performance kit with up to 565 PS / 415 kW
-Powerful-dynamic Carlsson-Aerodynamics
-Sport rear muffler, coil-over kit and limited slip differential
-Carlsson High Tech forged wheels 1/16 UL in 19 inches

2009 Carlsson Mercedes-Benz CK63 S-22009 Carlsson Mercedes-Benz CK63 S-1Merzig, Germany – With the C-Class top-of-the line model C 63 AMG, Mercedes-Benz has given an impressive statement in the medium class. Where else can you get an enormous larger than 6 litre V8 engine in a relatively small car? But as the power output is comparably low, the high-tech manufacturer Carlsson activates the hidden potential. With up to 565 hp, the Carlsson CK63 leaves its competitors behind its (stainless steel) end pipes. And equipped with new wheels and even more sporty aerodynamics, the top-of-the line C-Class model refined by Carlsson also shows clear features of a top athlete.

Carlsson CK63 – that stands for performance and full torque. The performance kit for the motor type M156 increases the serial performance of the 6.3 litre V8 from 457 hp (336 kW) at 6,800 r.p.m up to 565 hp/415 kW. The torque significantly increases from 600 to 685 Nm and therefore the car only needs 3.8 seconds to accelerate from 0-100 km/h instead of the serial 4.5 seconds. Once more, the Carlsson engineers are able to prove their expertise gained in motor sports.

All kits include a special motor electronics adaption, a maximum speed increase up to 300 km/h (electronically limited), a sport air filter and a noble three-part Carlsson motor cover made of real carbon as well as the obligatory Carlsson nameplate in chrome. Carlsson gently limits the never-ending thrust at 300 km/h for all models with an electronic device. The Carlsson sport rear muffler from the 565 hp strong CK63 S-Kit not only renders an enormous sound but also 15 extra hp (11 kW).

2009 Corvette ZR1 - Video Review

In what could quite possibly be GM’s final crack at high end, petrol guzzling performance and all out power, the spanking new 2009 Corvette ZR1 has been tested by Motortrend magazine, and all indicators show that it is indeed a vehicle to be taken seriously by both the Europeans, and the Japanese.

Propelling the new ZR1 is a supercharged 6.2 litre LS9 V8 that makes a mammoth 476 kW and 819 N•m of torque, of which can also be found in the new Cadillac CTS-V.

This engine utilises an Eaton roots-type supercharger and features a neat water to air intercooler system that sits individual brick type coolers in each cylinder bank, and can be seen sitting flush through a hole in the sloping bonnet of the ZR1.

BMW X5 M Sport Package

Unlike arch-rival Mercedes Benz, which has an AMG variant for nearly every one of its cars, BMW has previously said it will only apply the M badge and treatment to models that suit. Although this is by no means the full M treatment, with the performance staying the same, BMW has today announced that for the first time in its nine-year history, the company’s large SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle), the BMW X5, will be available with an M Sport Package.

BMW X5 M Sport Package-2BMW X5 M Sport Package-1The changes are mostly to enhance individuality as well as further fine tune the suspension. Fro the outside, the M sport package is noticeable thanks to a unique set of body-colour front and rear bumpers, side skirts, colour-coded door protection strips and wider wheel arches to fit the 19 or 20 inch alloy wheels.

Furthermore, aluminium side window surrounds and roof rails finished in high-gloss satin chrome complete the exterior treatment. The Package is only available for cars ordered in Alpine White, Titanium Silver, Space Grey, Monaco Blue, Black Sapphire and Carbon Black. Suspension is changed for firmer damper settings as well as revised spring rates. This is fitted only when Adaptive Drive is not optioned.

The Sport Package comes with 19-inch V-spoke M light alloy wheels (style 223 M), wrapped in run-flat safety tyres sized at 255/50 R 19 at the front and 285/45 R 19 at the rear. An extra $2,648 will get you to the next level with 20-inch M light alloy wheels (style 227 M), shod with 275/40 R20 front and 315/35 R20 rear run flat safety tyres. The interior gets a treatment as well, a new M leather steering wheel will take focus, so will the finely brushed aluminium interior trims and an anthracite BMW Individual roof lining. Last but not least, electrically adjustable sport seats (comfort seats for the X5 xDrive48i) for the front row are upgraded with a memory function for the driver’s setting.

The BMW X5 M Sport Package is available for all X5 models, with different pricing:
- For the BMW X5 xDrive48i, the M Sport Package is priced from $5,400
- For the BMW xDrive30i/d/sd Executive models, the M Sport Package is priced from $8,000
- For the BMW xDrive30i/d models, the M Sport Package is priced from $11,000

Mercedes Benz SLR 722 GT in action – Video

For those of you who don’t know, the Mercedes Benz SLR 722 GT is a track version of the SLR, powered by a supercharged 5.5 liter AMG V8, which delivers 680 hp and allows the car to achieve some really impressive performance numbers: 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 314 km/h (195 mph).

But there’s a downside to all this, of course. The car, which can only be purchased from RENNtech, has a very impressive pricing also, $1.2 million. You’d say that no one would be crazy enough to pay that much money for a track-only car, but it seems that there were a few rich folks who bought the car, because here’s a video of eight SLR 722 GT’s at an event organised by RENNtech. Enjoy!

Mercedes SLR McLaren 722S Roadster

When Mercedes-Benz unveiled the convertible version of its very rare SLR McLaren 722 S Coupe late last month, all it had for us were ethereal renderings of what the car would look like. This week the German automaker has given unto us a gallery's worth of high-res photography showing what is likely to become the world's fastest convertible.

Mercedes SLR McLaren 722S Roadster-2The SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S features the same 650-hp supercharged 5.5L V8 as the coupe version, but lops off its top in favor of a power soft top that can actually sustain 200+mph speeds. The only other convertible we can think of that could possibly compete is the recently spied 602-hp Bentley Continental GTC Speed, the coupe version of which can crest 200 mph.

E-Go Revolt from Russia

Russian coach-building firm E-Go has released the first official images and details surrounding its new Revolt supercar. Whilst these details seem preliminary, especially when accompanied by obvious computer generated renderings, production of the Russian sports car has apparently already begun.

E-Go Revolt -2E-Go Revolt -1Despite its seemingly Green namesake, the E-Go Revolt has lifted a page from Nissan’s performance flagship, and is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine churning out over 410kW mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

The platform on which the Revolt is based has been borrowed from Mitsubishi, although exactly which model is unclear - perhaps the Mitsubishi GTO is a new release in Russia?

The Revolt features bespoke 19-inch wheels - 245/40/19 fronts, 325/3019 rears - and are made to order by Japanese firm Work.

Active pneumatic suspension and an impressive brake package consisting for 425mm and 342mm rotors front to back suggest E-Go has high hopes that the Revolt will perform as well as its appearance suggests. While there are no official images of the interior, the (Russian) press release indicates the electronics systems are controlled through a touch-screen monitor located on the steering wheel.

2008 Morey Concept by Felix Runde

(from Felix Runde) Morey was born in a project at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hannover, Germany. In the year 2007, there was a challenge to design a light weight construction with an official approval. Morey is a racing car with organic shapes. It has classic influences based on old cars like the Cobra. What is notable about the shape of Morey is that it changes from every perspective. For best weight distribution, the motor is in the middle of the car.

2008 Morey Concept-22008 Morey Concept-1It receives air from intercoolers that are positioned behind and to the side of the driver and passenger seats. This is a brand new look and sound. The grille pushes forward, and below there is a spoiler for air contact pressure. At the rear there is a diffuser to steady the car. For optimal performance, the tires have a normal size (215/45 R17 - 245/40 R17).

Mystery Acura crossover spied on Nurburgring

It seems regardless of their performance capability, many manufacturers are keen on showing off their latest prototypes at the Nurburgring - as Honda has done here with a crossover destined for the Acura brand.

Acura crossover -3Acura crossover -2Acura crossover -1Established as a direct competitor to the BMW X6 in the US, little is known about the unnamed crossover at this point, with Honda obviously keen to keep it under wraps for now.

The car is likely to boast similar dimensions to its German counterpart as well as Nissan’s Infiniti FX35.

Little can be inferred about its styling due to the heavy camouflage, however its low roofline and large wheels suggest its design influences are more sporty rather than rugged.

Educated speculation at this point suggests this new model will likely make its public debut in early 2010.

2009 Lorinser smart fortwo

(from Lorinser Press Release) Smart Power in Series
After the fast-moving study, Sportservice Lorinser is now bringing the series version of the Fortwo on the road: it was worth waiting, as the look and driving experience of the power dwarf remain almost unfiltered. 101 HP (74 kW) – more than in any factory version – provide a smart power caracteristics in any situation. After all, at only around 800 kg vehicle weight, the "horses" have an easy job. The conversion is based on the three-cylinder petrol-fuelled turbo engine with its standard 84 HP (62 kW).

2009 Lorinser smart fortwoWith the power training from Winnenden, the small vehicle with the rear-wheel drive accelerates to 100 km/h in under ten seconds, and is therefore over one second faster than the standard vehicle. The Lorinser upgrade for the basic petrol-fuelled vehicle with previously 61 HP (45 kW) is just as nippy. 71 HP (55 kW) are now being mobilised, just like with the average series motorisation, which in turn has an output of 82 HP (60 kW) after its power was increased by the famous customiser.

All Lorinser models achieve a regulated top speed of 160 km/h, which is more than the fastest factory version. That's why the speedometer also receives a discreet update. The interior may be small but the looks are great. Lorinser has the following design parts in stock for you: a black leather steering wheel with aluminium, an accented parts set for instruments, centre consoles, ventilation and handbrake lever, pedals and footrest in aluminium.

On the other hand, an extremely muscular "back" is the optical identifying feature for the Lorinser wing extensions. A total of 55 millimetres of width increase create space for giant 8.5Ч17 aluminium rims with tyre size 225/35R17 on the powered rear axle. In the front it is 7Ч17 inches and 205/40R17. The Speedy design with the six spade-shaped spokes is a real eye-catcher that signals distinct dynamics even when at a standstill. No empty promise, as the Fortwo allows high curve speeds thanks to the wide tyres.

Nissan 370Z

It read Nissan 370Z, confirming that under the bonnet of the two-seater coupé is a 3.7-litre V6. This is the same unit as used by Nissan luxury offshoot Infiniti. As a result, the 370Z promises to be quicker and more powerful than the 350Z, with around 325bhp on tap – up from 309bhp. We have already spotted test mules for the new model disguised as a 350Z (above), but our spy pictures reveal a distinctive new look – and its shark fin-style headlamps have clearly been inspired by those fitted to the company’s Maxima luxury saloon.

Nissan 370Z-1Nissan 370Z-2The handsome four-door made its debut at last month’s New York Motor Show (Newsweek, Issue 1,005), and the Z car will share its smart projector-style headlamps, with a row of fashionable LED lights included, too.

The 370Z is set to be revealed officially at November’s Los Angeles expo, before hitting UK dealers in 2009. It could also benefit from upgrades from Nissan’s Nismo performance division.

The car also gets a 330bhp 3.7-litre V6 engine and revised looks with new, shark fin-style lights. The 370Z will be unveiled at next month’s LA Motor Show.

BMW M1 ProCar on eBay

One of the rarest of (relatively) modern BMWs is the M1. Back in the mid-1970s, the gang in Munich were tired of Porsche getting all the glory in sports car racing with its 911-based 934 and 935. BMW decided to design a car specifically to compete in Group 4 and 5 racing against those Porsches, and because Group 4 required that a minimum of 400 road going cars be built for homologation, BMW designed the race car and then changed only what was necessary to make the car acceptable for the street. Unfortunately, by the time they got the 400 cars built, competition was already moving on and few M1s were ever raced.

BMW M1-1BMW M1-2BMW did build a small run of cars based on the Group 4 spec car for an all-steer all-star series called ProCar that was ran in conjunction with some F1 races, and the 3.5L twin-cam 24-valve inline-six eventually found a home in the first generation M5 and M6. Some of the 456 road cars were later converted to replicas of the ProCar machines, including one that has popped up on eBay this week. As of this writing, the bidding is at $140,000 and the Buy it Now price is a mere $189,000.

2010 Ford Mustang GT Spied

Spy shots of the 2010 Ford Mustang are an easy thing to come by lately, as Ford has seemingly taken to driving prototypes around Detroit just for fun. We've shown you the base V6 model wearing little camo, the GT500 and even the car's interior. Now we bring you shots of the '10 Mustang GT model that were recently snapped in the parking lot of a strip mall. The shots show of all the goods, including the new front end inspired by the Giuigiaro Mustang Concept that debuted in 2006 at the LA Auto Show.

That car enjoyed a rear-wheel-drive muscle car segment of just one – itself – for years. The new Mustang, however, will find the Dodge Challenger and brand new Chevy Camaro waiting for it next year.

Hyundai-Kia import ban in China

China has just closed its doors to the Hyundai-Kia group, one of the strong players in the promising Chinese car market, declaring an import ban on cars from the South Korean company.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe-1Hyundai Genesis Coupe-2The stop to imports has occurred after an apparent violation of the Chinese antitrust norms, which appears to be linked to irregularities in the local sales network, according to Reuters reports.

It’s not the end of the world for Hyundai-Kia as of the 520,000 cars sold in China every year, only 50,000 are actually produced in Korea. The rest are assembled in China through joint ventures with local manufacturers.

RKSport Hyundai Genesis Spied

One of our faithful readers was hanging out a gas station not far from our Detroit offices when he spotted what was clearly a new Hyundai Genesis sedan getting a fill up.

RKSport Hyundai GenesisNow seeing Genesis sedans and other Hyundais in various states of camouflage is not out of the ordinary in these parts over since the Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center Inc. (HATCI) is in the area. This particular Genesis is something a little different though. Notice those indentations in the hood and missing bits of trim? A little digging revealed that this is in fact the car that is being developed in cooperation with RKSport for the SEMA Show in Las Vegas this November.

RKSport is working on body and suspension modifications for the car, while the engineers at HATCI are working on engine mods. We don't know which engine will be under the hood, although the words "powertrain boosting" were heard from a source. Judging from what looks like a pattern for cutouts in the hood, a turbocharged or supercharged engine seems a possibility. Our article mentions an enhanced version of the 4.6L Tau V8, however, a pressurized version of the 3.8L Lambda V6 isn't out of the question either.

MINI E

BMW has finally unleashed some information and photos of the much anticipated MINI E set to debut next month at the LA Auto Show. For those who haven't been paying attention, late last spring BMW announced plans to build and lease a fleet of 500 battery powered MINIs starting sometime in 2009. The front wheels of the MINI E receive torque through a single speed gearbox from a 204 hp, 162 lb-ft electric motor. Those numbers are rather unusual for an electric drive system which usually has much more torque. Nonetheless, the MINI E can hustle to 62 mph in 8.5 seconds and, according to BMW, can cover about 150 miles on a full charge of its lithium ion battery pack.

MINI E-1MINI E-2Anyone who has driven a MINI knows that the back seat is for small kids or occasional use only. For the purposes of this electric version, that is no longer an issue as that area has been completely consumed by the battery pack. The pack itself has a capacity of 35 kWh and judging by the description the company has used a similar set up to the Tesla Roadster. Instead of larger cells specifically designed for automotive applications, this pack uses 5,088 cells arranged in 48 modules. As always, charging time depends on the current and voltage of the outlet the car is plugged into.

MINI will be supplying a high current charging station with the cars that can be installed in the driver's garage to facilitate quicker charges, providing a full charge in 2.5 hours. The regenerative braking system can provide three-quarters of the braking requirements when running in urban stop and go driving. Aside from the battery pack replacing the rear seat and the yellow trim, the main change inside is a battery meter that replaces the tachometer in front of the driver. BMW will be leasing the 500 cars to commercial and private customers in California, New York and New Jersey starting early next year. They may eventually expand the program to Europe as well.

2009 Ford F-150

The 2009 Ford F-150 doesn't bring any wild new hardware to the table. There's no two-mode hybrid like the 2010 Chevrolet Silverado and 2010 Dodge Ram will offer. Leaf springs still connect the rear axle to the frame, unlike the 2009 Dodge Ram which uses coil springs. Ford may introduce a diesel F-150 to compete with the upcoming diesel trucks from Chevrolet and Dodge, but the company seems to favor the impending EcoBoost engine which will combine direct injection and turbocharging to deliver diesel-like performance without the prohibitive cost of a diesel engine or diesel fuel. In true Ford fashion, this engine will not be available at launch.

2009 Ford F-150-12009 Ford F-150-2The only significant changes for the 2009 Ford F-150 are the introduction of six-speed automatic transmissions, a larger crew cab, and a new 4.6-liter three-valve V-8 engine. The rest of the truck is just a freshening of the 2008 F-150, something you realize just as soon as you hit the road.

Ford is very proud of the fact that the 2009 F-150 offers more possible configurations than any competitor truck. If you decide to buy an F-150, you'll first need to determine which cab style fits your needs (regular, super, and crew cabs are available), then decide how much bed you require (there are three choices ranging from 5.5 to 8 feet in length), and, finally, determine how luxurious you'd like the truck to be, since there are seven different trim levels.

Once you've figured out all of that, you can choose among the three V-8 engines, then decide between rear- and four-wheel-drive. There are 35 different core configurations for the F-150 just taking cab size, bed length, and trim level into account. Fourteen of those possible combinations are available with the SuperCrew cab.

2009 Cadillac CTS-V Goes Cheap

You’ve gotta love America. When we get it right, there’s no beating us. Like Apollo. And LBJ. Or take the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V for pondering. Massive power (556, to be exact) out of a supercharged V8 that shares more than a little blood with the beating heart in the Chevorlet Corvette ZR-1 (basically the same mill, minus some fancy titanium, ECU), and decidedly stately looks. What’s not to love?

2009 Cadillac CTS-V With performance on par with some seriously expensive competitive German bruisers out there, most feared the bottom line on Cadillac’s new king o’ de fleet. GM just put those fears to rest with news that this ultra-sedan will come with an unbelievably subdued $59,995 price tag from the factory. Of course, you can expect a dealer raping, but that’s par for the course.

2008 Lexus GS 450h

Edmunds reports 2008 Lexus GS hybrid has "rakish styling." Cars.com feels "the GS is more futuristic than its predecessor, touting its long hood and set-back cabin.”

2008 Lexus GS 450hAutoblog says "visual differences, for the astute Lexus admirer, include 18-inch light-alloy wheels," adding that "the badge on the trunk will also reflect the Lexus 2008 hybrid powertrain"; beyond this, "all other features, including dimensions, match with the standard GS 430." Cars.com also remarks that the 2008 Lexus GS 450h is "virtually identical to the GS 350 and GS 460 sedans...sporting Lexus' now-familiar face with its steeply raked headlights and thick C-pillars." Because it shares so much with the good-looking GS line, this Lexus 2008 model's styling "is sexier than that of many other hybrids," as the reviewer at ForbesAutos puts it.

The similarity extends to this 2008 Lexus's interior; Cars.com notes this Lexus 2008 model's interior "is identical to other GS models." This is not necessarily a bad thing, as Car and Driver points out: "like other Lexuses, this one features a beautifully finished interior." Edmunds describes the 2008 Lexus in glowing terms: "genuine wood and aluminum trim complements the rich leather seating surfaces," though stating that "the highly polished wood can reflect glare annoyingly at times."

The 2008 Lexus GS 450h has reasonably good handling, but its hybrid powertrain doesn’t provide a substantial fuel-economy gain over the gas-powered version. Fuel economy is reasonable at EPA ratings of 22 mpg city and 25 mpg highway--but considering this Lexus 2008 vehicle is a hybrid, "not exactly a quantum leap…nor are they as good as the Mercedes-Benz E320 CDI's 27/37 mpg." Automobile does note, however, that it's "far less polluting than the diesel Benz--even the upcoming Bluetec version." It’s also no clear improvement over the Lexus GS 350 V-6’s 19/27 mpg.

Alfa Romeo Junior Z

The Junior Zagato is a 105 series Giulia based car and it shares the same floor pan as the Giulia Spider and as such a lot of the parts like the exhausts, propshaft, engine, gearbox and running gear are interchangable. This makes the Junior Z a very exclusive and practical Alfa Romeo to own. The car comes in two versions: the short tailed 1300 and the long tailed 1600. They changed from one to the other in 1972. First released to the public in November 1969 at the Turin motor show the car looked fast, however it is only 5kmh faster than the 1300 GT and even though the early cars had alloy doors and bonnet it is only 10 Kg lighter, so the performance could not justify the 800,000 lira difference in price. However, the looks could.

Alfa Romeo Junior Z-1Alfa Romeo Junior Z-2The car, as usual with Zagato designs was clean and fresh with an empasis on good visability. The styling was also very advanced; the wedge shape was the precurser to many designs in the 1970's and the design was virtualy copied by the Honda CRX in the early 1990's. Aerodynamicaly the cam tail was quite advanced and was a carry over from the TZ1 and 2's. The headlamps are covered by a plexi glass screen that has a central hole in the Alfa Romeo emblem to cool the radiater while the louvers to the left feed cold air to the carburettors.

At the back the hatch has an interesting feature in that it can be raised by a switch in the centre console to provide extra cabin ventilation. The 1300 was produced for 3 years and in that time 1108 were produced while 402 of the 1600's were produced between 1972 and 1975 and even this limited production run streched the production facilitys at the Zagato factory, however it helped cement relations between Alfa Romeo and Zagato and put them on an equal footing with Bertone and Pininfarina as a carrozzeria, which was something of a watershed for the company.

To drive a Junior Z today you will imediatly notice the slightly stiffer suspension settings and this helps the car to feel considerably more nimble than the GT. This feeling is aided by the short overhangs front and rear, which help you to place the car exactly where you want it.

The engine and gearbox are exactly the same as the GT and the gear ratios suit the car very well with gear selection being both positive and precice. The clutch, being hydralic, is both light and self adjusting, and easily able to cope with the 1600's 109 bhp. When pushed hard the car tends to understeer, however this can be balanced on the throttle in classic rear wheel drive fasion to provide a very entertaining drive, and it is truly an Alfa Romeo in every sense.

Renault Megane GTI

Things are really hotting up at Renault. Following the launch of the three-door Mégane at the Paris Motor Show last week, Auto Express can reveal work has already begun in earnest on a flagship Renaultsport version to replace the outgoing R26.

Renault Megane GTI-1Renault Megane GTI-2It’s set to hit showrooms in a year’s time with a price tag of around £20,000. The fiery hot hatchback will take on the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST in a sector that’s proved hugely successful for the French manufacturer in recent years.

At first glance, the prototype – which was spied undergoing testing – resembles the regular three-door Mégane. Study it closely, however, and there’s a central tailpipe – a trademark of Renaultsport editions – while the wheels, tyres and brakes are much larger than on the standard model. The final car will have very aggressive styling with a deep front spoiler, lots of air intakes and a full bodykit with plastic inserts.

Under the bonnet, the car will stick with the current R26’s 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, producing at least 230bhp. The new Mégane weighs less than the outgoing model in standard guise, and the hot hatch will use ultra-light materials to
shed even more pounds.

That should lead to a 150mph top speed and a 0-60mph time of less than six seconds, plus better economy and emissions than the R26. A clever electronically controlled differential will help maximise the front-wheel-drive car’s traction; the weight reduction will benefit handling, too.

The Renaultsport Mégane is set to make its official world debut at March’s Geneva Motor Show, before going on sale in the UK next autumn.

Alfa Romeo 149

Alfa Romeo 149 will be offered in both three and five doors version and will go on sale in the middle of next year as a direct rival to Ford’s Focus (European version).

Alfa Romeo 149-1Alfa Romeo 149-2The 149 is based on the same platform as the Fiat Bravo and Lancia Delta. Just like the Alfa’s smallest car, the MiTo, the 149 will borrow from the lines of the 8C Competizione and translate it into a small hatch — not a bad place to start. Under the hood Alfa Romeo will place a range of 1.4-liter gas turbo and 1.9 diesel units ranging from 120bhp to 250bhp.

This is the exact kind of design that will make small cars popular in the U.S. If (and this is a big IF) Alfa can bring this here as both stylish and frugal, it may have a revolution on its hands.

Subaru Forester - Motor Trend Sport Utility of the year

Motor Trend has gone back to the basics by picking the newly redesigned Subaru Forester as its 2008 SUV of the Year. Right off the bat, editor Arthur St. Antoine claims that the choice wasn't a reaction to high fuel prices, with the Forester posting the highest fuel efficiency in a group of contenders that includes the BMW X6, Ford Flex, Kia Borrego, Infiniti EX and FX, Nissan Murano, Toyota Sequoia, Volkswagen Tiguan, Honda Pilot, Chevy Traverse, Dodge Journey and Lexus LX570. In fact, their choice may seem somewhat surprising considering that the Forester's 2.5L flat-four engine (turbocharged in the Forester 2.5XT and naturally aspirated in the 2.5X) is borrowed straight from the Impreza and makes do with only a 5-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

Subaru Forester -1Subaru Forester -2There's surely lots more innovation in this field of SUV contenders, but MT gave the Forester credit for being a Swiss Army Knife in a drawer of specialized cutlery. The rest of the field each does its own particular thing well, but according to MT, the Forester often equals or betters the field in some surprising areas like space efficiency and ground clearance. It lacks a lot of whiz-bang gadgets, but was appreciated by MT editors for keeping it simple and doing many things well. By virtue of this last quality the most, they deemed it the winner seemingly because it stretches the family dollar in more ways than just good-for-an-SUV fuel economy. Rolls-Royce RR4 spied

These exclusive spy shots provide our first clear look at the upcoming baby Rolls-Royce RR4 which will take its position as the new entry-level model for the ultra-luxury marquee.

Rolls-Royce RR4 -1Rolls-Royce RR4 -2The CEO of Rolls-Royce Ian Robertson has said the introduction of this new model would see the brand’s annual production double to 1600 units.

Robertson’s only description of the new baby Rolls to reporters at last year’s Geneva Motor Show was that it would be “unmistakably a Rolls-Royce”.

This is certainly the case, with the camouflaged model in these images boasting the chiselled lines of the Phantom saloon.

To reduce development costs and save time, Rolls-Royce engineers will use many electronic components from BMW’s long wheelbase 7-Series.

However its engine will be completely unique to Rolls-Royce and “will have the attributes and behaviour of a Rolls-Royce” said Robertson.

BMW X1 compact SUV spied

A heavily camouflaged test mule lapping the Nurburgring has given us our first glimpse of BMW’s newest compact X1 SUV. Though likely destined for the urban jungle, the X1 will be a full time four-wheel drive, sharing many features of its not-so-mini MINI off-roader.

BMW X1 compact SUV -1BMW X1 compact SUV -2It boasts a relatively identical footprint to the current Toyota RAV4, although this is where the similarities end, especially in regards to the price tag.

The cabin will share a high degree of commonality with the 1-series, complete with the latest iDrive and BMW’s signature swan-necked gearlever.

Like all BMW’s, it will also use the Efficient Dynamics system which utilises stop-start and alternator control technologies to improve economy and lower emissions.

A hybrid version of the X1 is an almost certainty, likely to carry over from the system currently in development for the new 7-Series.

2010 Toyota Prius

Toyota PR reportedly confirmed that we're looking at Toyota Prius that will be revealed in January at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. As Damon pointed out last night, the new design is an evolution of the current model that incorporates some recent favorite styling cues of Toyota designers like the bulbous badge housing up front.

2010 Toyota Prius-12010 Toyota Prius-2The interior, however, is a marked step away from the current model's spaceship controls, and thankfully eschews that car's dash-mounted shifter for a new one properly placed on the buttressed center console. Mechanically speaking, the new Prius is expected to arrive with a more powerful gas engine, bigger electric motor and, despite continuing to use nickel-metal hydride rather than lithium-ion batteries, improved fuel efficiency. It is the Prius after all.

MINI Aldridge Special

A unique MINI featuring a visually stunning exterior designed by legendary artist, illustrator and graphic designer Alan Aldridge, is now on show at the Design Museum in London. The MINI Aldridge Special is an exhibit in a retrospective display of Alan’s work, entitled ‘The Man with Kaleidoscope Eyes’.

MINI Aldridge Special-1MINI Aldridge Special-2Alan Aldridge is known primarily for his creative work throughout the 1960s and 70s. Dubbed ‘The Graphic Entertainer’, Aldridge illustrated lyric books for the Beatles, album covers for The Rolling Stones, The Who and Elton John, was Art Director for Penguin Books and illustrated much-loved children’s books such as ‘The Butterfly Ball’.

Now working in Los Angeles, Alan Aldridge was keen to mark the opening of his exhibition by recreating an iconic cover of the Sunday Times Magazine, which in 1965 featured a classic Mini painted in his own, inimitable style. The updated interpretation of this image, using a new MINI One as the canvas for Alan’s design, featured in the 12 October 2008 edition of the publication, again, warranting front cover status.

The MINI Aldridge Special is adorned with an array of images, shapes and patterns, each reflecting either a male or female theme, just as the 1965 car did. The design theme is split between each side of the car, the driver side being largely set on a blue background and masculine in appearance, with passenger near side artistry backed on pink.

‘The Man with Kaleidoscope Eyes’ exhibition runs until 25 January 2009. MINI fans and the British public will get another chance to see the MINI Aldridge Special in the metal at MINI United next year, the global MINI event which will be staged at a renowned British race circuit between 22-24 May 2009. Further details will be announced by MINI UK in the near future.

Toyota HiLux WorkMate

Already leading the race in new vehicle sales year-to-date, Toyota is now rolling out the new member of the HiLux family, the WorkMate, for the first time with automatic transmission. The new WorkMate single cab and double cab automatic models take the HiLux 4×2 range to 16 models and will no doubt strengthen Toyota’s strong sales record.

Toyota-1Toyota-2Toyota is definitely doing something right, offering just what car buyers are after, FCAI figures show the company retained the top sales position in September with a market share of 22.4 percent, well ahead of Holden on 13.1 per cent and Ford with 11.0 per cent.

The launch of the WorkMate automatic is part of an overall visual and technical upgrade for the now 32-model range of Toyota HiLux 4×2 and 4×4 utilities. The upgrade includes Euro IV compliance for HiLux’ two VVT-i equipped petrol engines (WorkMate’s 2.7-litre engine and the 4.0 litre V6), larger front brakes and improved rear suspension for all 4×2 models as well as improved front suspension across the entire range. WorkMate also comes with the option of ABS anti-skid brakes and all models now have 15-inch steel wheels.

The HiLux’ facelift features include newly shaped grilles, a fresh front bumper and headlight design on the outside as well as some slight changes for the interior.

As the company continues to build on its winning formula, we’ll see if the new strings to its bow see Toyota at the top of the table for October sales as well.

Dodge Challenger Concepts at SEMA 2008

The reincarnated Dodge Challenger has quickly established its own reputation separate from the classic from which it was born, with three muscle bound concepts set to make an appearance at the 2008 SEMA Show. The three concepts are from Chrysler’s in house tuning division SRT, drag racing specialists Mopar Underground and another which is a full-blown competition car that raced and completed the Targa Newfoundland race this year.

Dodge Challenger SRT10 Concept-1Dodge Challenger Blacktop-2Dodge Challenger Targa,Dodge-3Dodge Challenger SRT10 Concept
In a combination of Tornado Red and raw carbon-fibre, the Challenger SRT10 Concept boasts an 8.4-litre all-aluminium V10 engine with 447kW and 758Nm lifted straight from the Dodge Viper. The Challenger SRT10 also adds upgraded brakes, Bilstein shocks and a nostalgic ’shaker’ hood which pays homage to the 1970 HEMI Cuda as well as feeding the V10 engine with fresh air.

Dodge Challenger Blacktop
The menacing Challenger Blacktop began life as a regular Challenger R/T equipped with a 5.7-litre HEMI V8 engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Mopar Underground has added unique spoilers and front diffuser along with a striking black-on-black colour scheme and massive 22-inch Dodge Viper wheels. The engine has been improved with several Mopar additions including a cat back dual-exhaust and cold air intake to help the HEMI breathe.

Dodge Challenger Targa
This full blown competition car started life as a Mopar Challenger drag race package car, with even more enhancements added from the Dodge Viper - most notably the snakeskin green paint scheme. A Mopar chin spoiler keeps the front end planted while the bonnet scoop feeds the 402kW and 663Nm 392 HEMI V8 crate motor which is mated to a modified version of the factory six-speed manual gearbox. The Stop-Tech brake package consists of six-piston callipers up front and four-pot callipers down back clamping onto 380mm and 355mm rotors respectively.

Renault Megane 1.5 dCi

The family hatchback sector is the most competitive in the Europe. So, to compete with a raft of top-quality opposition, it’s vital for Renault to get the new Mégane right. The latest Volkswagen Golf raises the bar for quality and refinement in the sector, and the dynamic prowess of the Ford Focus makes it the one to beat for sheer driving fun. So we’ve driven the 1.5 dCi Mégane to see if it can challenge the best in class.

Renault Megane 1.5 dCi-1Renault Megane 1.5 dCi-2The outgoing model’s angular styling and jutting rear end caused controversy, although its uniqueness also won it plenty of fans. Yet the most striking thing about the new car is how much more conventional its styling is. Nowhere near as challenging, it has a low, wide stance and more conventionally handsome proportions. A version of the outgoing car’s chassis has been used, but it’s modified to make the model wider and longer. Inside, the dashboard has an understated elegance, with soft-touch materials in the upper half. Thoughtful details include chrome accents on the door handles and a rubberised feel to the centre console.

Finding a comfortable driving position is easy, thanks to plenty of seat and wheel adjustment. The instrument panel combines analogue and digital information. A centrally placed speedo displays large, dark numbers against a light background, and integrates a gearshift indicator along with a speed limiter – which goes from a static green to a flashing red to indicate the selected maximum has been reached. Elements from the Laguna saloon include hands-free entry and an electric parking brake

Completing the upgrade, there are larger disc brakes for improved stopping power. These are a definite improvement over those of the outgoing car. And, once again, the 1.5-litre diesel unit leaves a positive impression. It doesn’t throw you into the back of your seat, but responds smoothly from 1,800rpm – and it’s frugal. The six-speed gearbox has a clean precise change, while the ride is a good compromise between comfort and stability.

We also got behind the wheel of the 2.0-litre turbo petrol variant, which is even more impressive thanks to stiffer springs and dampers. The result is stable handling even when close to the limits, while the motor is fully alive and kicking after 1,900rpm, pushing on strongly all the way to 5,500rpm. It suffers from some turbo lag under hard driving, however, and would benefit from shorter-throw gearshifts.

As the likely big seller, the 1.5-litre diesel variant impresses with its mix of frugality, acceptable performance and genuinely enjoyable driving experience.

McLaren P11

Although a recent shift in McLaren’s design management has delayed the company’s upcoming P11 performance car by at least a year, it doesn’t look as though the P11 project has been brought to a complete standstill. The P11’s mechanical components are reported to be set, and a series of new images reveals the P11’s design could be closer to production-ready than first thought.

McLaren P11The P11 was originally slated to make its debut in 2009, but its first auto show appearance will now be sometime in 2010. The P11’s production date has also been moved back, with a target now set for 2010 or early 2011.

Word has it that the P11 is taking aim at the Ferrari F430 Scuderia and the Porsche GT2 and will use a Mercedes AMG-sourced 6.2-liter V8 making 550 horsepower. Although the engine will be sourced from AMG, it is believed that Mahle — the company that took over Cosworth — will build the engine. That power will be sent to the rear-wheels and the car should be capable of sub-4 second 0 to 60 runs, as well as a top speed over 200 mph.

Following the launch of the P11, McLaren is expected to offer a Spider version of the P11, which has likely been delayed until early or mid-2012

Also on the calendar for the 2012 or possibly even 2013 is an even more high-performance version of the P11 — dubbed the P12. The P12 — which will probably wear the GTR nameplate in production — will channel the spirit of the original McLaren F1 and, as such, will be powered by a V10 making in excess of 600 horsepower. To further push its performance to the limits, the P12’s P11-based platform will be completely re-engineered to reduce as much weight as possible.

2009 Audi A5

If you're in the market for a luxury sport coupe and your primary goal is to stand out from the crowd, look no further than the curvaceous 2009 Audi A5. This is a car whose luscious lines will quicken the pulse of even the most jaded valet. And unlike rival models sporting blue-and-white propeller badges and three-pointed stars, an A5 can't be seen every day. The A5 is a highly capable car with a finely wrought interior, but it's also rather pricey compared to some competitors.

2009 Audi A5-12009 Audi A5-2Underneath the A5's slinky sheet metal, it's basically a two-door version of the A4 3.2 Quattro sedan, save for its low-slung seating position. As such, it shares with the A4 a direct-injected 3.2-liter V6 that pumps out a healthy 265 horsepower, as well as the Quattro all-wheel-drive system and a choice between a manual or automatic transmission. The V6 isn't blindingly fast, but it provides the sort of refined yet authoritative acceleration that shoppers in this segment will appreciate. When the going gets twisty, the A5's impressive composure belies its nose-heavy weight bias -- unlike the boulevard-cruising Mercedes-Benz CLK350, say, this Audi is a willing dance partner in tight corners.

The 2009 Audi A5 is also a bargain compared to the Benz, undercutting the latter's base price by a few thousand dollars. Relative to the rest of the field, though, the Audi costs a pretty penny. For example, Infiniti's G37 handily outperforms the A5 for thousands less, and BMW's AWD 328xi coupe splits the difference between the Audi and the Infiniti price-wise, while offering the best handling of all. Moreover, if you can do without AWD, the rear-wheel-drive 328i coupe is cheaper still, and the crushingly quick 335i coupe is only marginally more expensive than the A5.

But curb appeal is often what draws shoppers to luxury sport coupes in the first place, and the A5 is easily the class leader in this regard. That may be enough to tip the scales in its favor, regardless of its performance or value for the dollar. Those who do choose an A5 based on its seductive looks are unlikely to be disappointed by how it drives. If you'd rather be thrilled than ogled, however, there are better -- and cheaper -- choices.

2008 Mercedes-Benz B-Class range

Along with significant detail improvements, the four-cylinder engines now use up to 7 percent less fuel and produce even lower emissions which undercut the current EU limits by as much as 90 percent.

2008 Mercedes-Benz B-Class-12008 Mercedes-Benz B-Class-2Design enhancements and updated specifications further differentiate the B-Class from its A-Class sibling. The interior has been upgraded with a new upholstery fabric and pattern, whilst the sport package adds side seat bolsters which are trimmed in ARTICO man-made leather and the centre panels in fabric.

Mercedes will continue to offer three models in its B-Class line-up with the B 180 CDI, the B 200, and the range-leading B 200 Turbo. For the B 180 CDI, it features a four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine developing 80kW and 250Nm while fuel consumption remains at an impressively low 5.8 litres per 100kms. The B-Class sports tourer also holds the distinction of being awarded EuroNCAP’s highest safety rating of five stars.

Standard for the 2008 model year B-Class, it now incorporates a system which flashes the rear brake lights under emergency braking to gain the attention of other drivers, and also activates the hazard warning lights at speeds over 70km/h. B-Class owners also have the option of an Active parking assist system which automatically steers the car into any parking space.

Elfin Type 5 Clubman at Sydney Motor Show

Fans of the original Lotus 7 will undoubtedly be familiar with Elfin. Others who, like Lotus itself, have come to realize that automotive development has advanced in the past few decades, may be less so. The Australian sportscar-maker is right up there with the likes of Caterham and Westfield, only from the land of reverse-flushing toilettes and leaf-eating marsupials.

Elfin Type 5 Clubman-1Elfin Type 5 Clubman-2The company is under the care of Tom Walkinshaw, a legend in the motorsports and tuning communities who has leveraged his close ties with GM's Holden subsidiary for the vehicle you see here, called the Type 5 Clubman. Replacing the discontinued Type 3, the new Type 5 joins the line-up alongside the MS8 Streamliner and was recently unveiled at the ongoing Sydney Motor Show.

The new roadster features the same 260-hp turbo four from the Pontiac Solstice GXP and Saturn Sky Redline, only in a much lighter frame of just 750kg (about 1,650 lbs). The combination of generous power and low weight means the Type 5 is pegged to hit 100 km/h (62mph) in a rapid 3.7 seconds while commanding a sticker price comparable Down Under to a Nissan 350Z or Mazda RX-8, only without frivolities like a roof or doors.

2010 Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid Spied

Though supplier issues threaten to delay the official launch, Mercedes-Benz continues to develop and test the 2010 ML450 Hybrid - its first SUV with hybrid powertrain.

2010 Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid Spied-12010 Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid Spied-2Thanks to the partnership inked in 2005, the ML450 Hybrid, like the Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango hybrids, will also use a form of GM's 2-Mode hybrid transmission. In base form, the ML450 Hybrid will use a 3.5-liter V-6, although our sources suggest a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 could be offered - at least in Europe. As neat as that idea sounds, we think the gas version will be plenty efficient: Mercedes says the ML450 Hybrid delivers an impressive 30.5 mpg combined.

Should Mercedes find a supplier able to produce batteries in a timely fashion, the ML450 Hybrid could arrive at dealers as early as the fall of 2009.

Citroen green concept

Citroën has embarked on a new project to look into the feasibility of producing an ultra-environmentally friendly vehicle based on the critically acclaimed C-Cactus concept car.

Citroen greenThe C-Cactus represents a new approach to eco-friendly design. The radical, essentialist vehicle, with its emphasis on environmental technology, features a simplified design throughout, significantly reducing the number of components and leading to a reduction in weight, cost and the impact on the environment.

Removing features that are non-essential to the running of the car or the comfort and safety of the occupants – even doing away with the dashboard – has resulted in an interior comprising around half the parts of a similarly-sized conventional car. The door panels are made of just two parts, compared to twelve in a conventional car and many components are made from recycled materials.

The project will consider a range of powerplants including a 1.0 litre, sub 100g/km CO2 , petrol; a HYmotion2 diesel–electric hybrid returning near 100mpg fuel economy and CO2 emissions of just 78g/km or a 100% electric model, similar to the version which is on display at the Paris motor show and which offers zero emissions together with a top speed and range of almost 70mph and 100 miles respectively.

2012 Honda S3000

With so much attention focused on Honda’s next-generation NSX, it’s no surprise the future of the S2000 has been a topic largely ignored in automotive circles. But rumors are beginning to circulate about a possible S2000 successor, tentatively named S3000.

2012 Honda S3000-12012 Honda S3000-2As shown by our artist’s illustrations, the S3000 wold borrow design cues from the OSM (Open Study Model) and CR-Z concept cars. Despite the dramatic new styling, however, the new “S” will stay true to its predecessor’s lightweight construction and tight proportions.

Not a lot else is known about the vehicle, but Honda is definitely trying to make it more competitive in terms of styling and comfort. Although it will remain a puristic roadster at heart, the S3000 will be a little less stripped-down.

In October 2005, Honda’s Motoatsu Shiraishi admitted the “S2000 has not been a success for us.” He suggested a different approach would be taken for the car’s replacement. He said the car’s manual gearbox was a turn-off to many potential buyers. Shiraishi hinted the successor would have to offer a paddle-shift gearbox to broaden the appeal. The new sports car — whatever its name — is expected to arrive in 2009 along with the next NSX supercar.

2009 Suzuki SX4 Crossover

Suzuki has taken the platform that forms the basis for their World Rally Championship (WRC) effort and adapted that DNA as the underlying platform for the SX4. Is this an off-road wanna-be, or does the SX4 really have some hair on its chest?

2009 Suzuki SX4 CrossoverThe SX4 is, in the words of Suzuki, “admirably frugal.” Available in an All-Wheel-Drive mode, or front-wheel-drive as was the case with our press vehicle, it is the first CUV below $16,000 to include a standard integrated navigation system. Suzuki calls it TRIP for short, which stands for Travel, Real-time Traffic, Information and Play. As tested, it was fairly loaded with the only options being a frugal $169 for floor mats and a cargo net.

Despite all these “frugalities,” the SX4 arrives on the scene with an Italian pedigree. Styled by the famed Italdesign design studio, it features a look that is definitely not mainstream, and that’s where its charm lies. Take for example, the quirky little triangular windows just behind the A-pillars. Or the high roof line. Or how about the dropping belt line, as well as numerous other design cues.

Suzuki has chosen a clever way of getting past the costs of building a specifically designed navigation system. Working with Garmin, Suzuki designed a housing where an “off-the-shelf” 4.3-inch Nuvi is located within a dash-top cubbyhole, and is connected directly into the SX4’s electronics. It goes a few steps further by incorporating MSNDirect, which features a low price gas finder, movie time finder, as well as news, weather and stocks.

The SX4 Crossover is powered by Suzuki’s 2-liter inline four-cylinder engine with a 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. With an output of 143 horsepower, and 136 lb-ft of torque, it sits right in the middle of the field of comparable crossovers. Available with a choice of optional four-speed automatic, or, as in our case, a five-speed manual transmission, the SX4 is able to achieve EPA mileage figures of 22 mpg city, and 30 mpg highway with the autobox, while the do-it-yourself version piped in at 22 mpg city and 29 mpg mileage highway. For reference sake, the SX4 splashes in at 2855 pounds wet. While these are not stellar figures, we would term them, for the category, as adequate.

2009 Dodge Challenger SE – Test drive

$39,000 Dodge Challenger SRT8, with its 21st-century muscle updating the classic hemi models, runs of retro Detroit updates. Now it's time to talk about the car that most of us will end up buying, the fuel-sipping 2009 Dodge Challenger SE. After driving it for a day this summer, we just finished putting a whopping 669 miles on a Challenger SE over the weekend, driving from our base near Detroit up to the Bay Harbor resort community that lies between Petoskey and Charlevoix on Michigan's Little Traverse Bay, an arm of Lake Michigan.

2009 Dodge Challenger SEOn the open road, we found this basic Challenger model to be a surprisingly pleasant car that delivers good acceleration, fuel economy and, of course, that classic clean look. Granted, the SE won't run with its fellow Challenger models at the drag strip, nor will it shame the new Toyota Prius or Volkswagen Jetta TDi when it comes to fuel economy. We just proved that the current Prius and new VW diesel are kings of the road in one of these beastly miles-per-gallon runs, but as a comfy, cool, $25,000 ride that won't sting at the pump, the Challenger sure makes a compelling case.

The Drive
Our model of the Challenger SE, in a stealthy dark titanium metallic finish with a dark slate gray cloth interior, starts at $21,320. But with a full load of standard power and convenience equipment, including 18-in. alloy wheels, it totaled $25,240. Dodge's 250-hp 3.5-liter V-6 makes 250 lb-ft of torque and is paired to a 4-speed automatic and a 3.64:1 rear-end ratio.

The SE is rated to deliver 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, and throughout our trip, we found it quiet, responsive and relatively smooth. We were attempting to drive for max mileage on this trip, so we used cruise control as much as possible, and kept a light foot on the go pedal at all times.

Instead of taking Interstate 75—the commercial and industrial spine of Michigan—the entire trip, we chose U.S. 127, an agricultural high road. This great route starts in Miami as U.S. 27, changes to 127 outside Chattanooga and ends at the intersection of I-75 in Grayling, Mich. With our favorite copilot, eats and drinks, a Valentine One radar detector and a Cobra NavOne portable navigation system on board, we left in the rain at 8 am on Saturday and arrived at home in the rain at 7 pm Sunday evening.

Dodge's aftermarket performance arm, Mopar, already offers a Pro Stock-style hood, a spoiler, a bright fuel filler door like the one on the SRT8 and even replacement shifter, and 20-in. forged aluminum wheels. So you could create a one-of-a-kind SE for far less than the price of an R/T and get V-6 gas mileage every day. Not a bad deal.

2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Spied

With sales dropping faster than stocks on Wall Street, we imagine Mercedes-Benz can’t get its updated — and most profitable — S-Class to market fast enough. But our latest spy shots show Mercedes’ flagship sedan is closing in on production ready, marking the S-Class’ first update since it hit the market in 2005.

2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Spied-12010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Spied-2Although the launch of the updated S-Class is still several months away, a few of its final styling cues can be seen on this prototype. Clearly visible are the new front skirt and fog lights, the differently sculpted bumper, the new mirrors with the more elegant side flashers. Also new will be the modified layout of the headlights: while the flashers will move to the bottom of the units, LED daylight driving lamps will be fitted to the outer edges of the front lamp units. A slightly re-designed rear bumper and new taillights loosing the metal stripes will round the facelift.

When we saw this S Class with new front and rear fascias, we immediately thought of the Ocean Drive Concept. From the slightly V-shaped grille, to the LEDs surrounding the headlamps, to the clean and smooth rear bumper – designers are following the direction of the stunning Ocean Drive.

No changes are expected to be made to the car’s powertrain, although a hybrid version of the S-Class will be offered for the first time in the form of the S400 BlueHYBRID.

Look for the updated S-Class to hit U.S. showrooms in spring of 2009, just in time for the 2010 model year.

2010 GMC Sierra HD

Although the U.S. truck market is amid a heavy decline, there are still those that need the capabilities of a pickup truck for various reasons. Because of this fact, General Motors is hard at working developing its next-generation of heavy duty pickups and our spy photographers just spotted a GMC Sierra Heavy Duty mule undergoing some real world testing.

2010 GMC Sierra HD-12010 GMC Sierra HD-2Making no effort to disguise itself, the 2010 GMC Sierra 2500 in these pictures is running with GM’s updated 6.6-liter Duramax V-8 under its hood. The Duramax is expected to receive a significant increase in horsepower and torque next year (well over 700 lbs-ft of torque, sources tell us) as well as meeting full Tier 2 Bin 5 federal emissions rules - the toughest clean diesel standard in the world. The Sierra’s grille has been toned down (from four horizontal bars to three with a squat honeycomb pattern running the length of each bar) and its front bumper has a larger inlet for the Allison transmission’s oil cooler, like the 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 we recently spied.

If you look closely at shots of the Sierra’s right front passenger side you can see what we believe is a temporarily placed urea tank attached to the frame for testing out the new emissions system. Urea fluid is injected into the exhaust stream to reduce nitrogen oxide levels. When it reaches production, the urea tank will have to be refilled periodically during routine maintenance and service.

Volkswagen Passat BlueTDI at Paris Motor Show

Volkswagen’s stand at Paris Motor Show and it's already sounded very interesting with the new Golf VI and its GTI version. Today, the German carmaker announced another premiere scheduled for the French show, the VW Passat BlueTDI.

Volkswagen Passat BlueTDIThe BlueTDI diesels are the cleanest engines VW has ever produced, comply to Euro-6 standards and they’ll go into production on the Passat starting next year. Europe will get them first, and though nothing was mention about the United States, the car will definitely be available here too. Volkswagen already offers BlueTDI engines, Euro 5 compliant, for the Tiguan and the Jetta, but the one featured in Paris represents the next generation, which combined with the dual-clutch DSG gearbox reduces CO2 emissions by up to 28%.

The Volkswagen Passat BlueTDI is powered by the 2.0-liter common-rail engine which now delivers 143hp, with a fuel consumption of 5.2 liters/100km (45 US mpg) and 139 g/km CO2 emissions for the Passat sedan, and 5.5 liters/100km (42.7 US mpg) and emits 144 g/km CO2 for the Variant.

Citroen C3 Picasso at Paris Auto Show

Citroën is to launch a second generation of its pioneering Stop & Start technology. Previewed on a striking pearlescent white and orange C3 Picasso at the Paris motor show, the new micro-hybrid system will be introduced in 2010 and will be available on a range of petrol and diesel models.

Citroen C3 PicassoThe special show car offers even better economy than the standard model with almost 70mpg on the combined cycle as well as low CO2 emissions of just 110g/km thanks to the new Stop & Start technology and six-speed EGS (Electronic Gearbox System). When the new C3 Picasso is launched in 2009, diesel versions will be fitted with a Particulate Filter System and will meet the Company’s green ‘Airdream’ criteria.

Citroën was the first manufacturer to introduce Stop & Start with combined alternator-starter on its C2 and C3 models, some four years ago. Independent testing proved it could give a 27% fuel saving in urban traffic by turning off the engine as the vehicle comes to a halt and then instantly restarting it as soon as the brake pedal is released.

The new-generation Stop & Start system will retain the combined alternator-starter unit, which provides quiet, smooth and almost instantaneous restarts, and will produce even better fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Improving the system’s environmental performance further, the new generation Stop & Start will also recover energy during braking and deceleration to recharge the vehicle’s battery without consuming fuel.

2009 Pininfarina B0 Electric Vehicle at Paris Auto Show

Pininfarina CEO Andrea Pininfarina was reportedly hard at work in finalizing his company's first production electric vehicle. Dedicated in his honor, that car - the 2009 Pininfarina B0 - was publically unveiled at this week's Paris motor show. Built in partnership with French battery firm Bollare, the B0 may look vaguely familiar. In fact, much of its exterior styling is borrowed from the Nara, an EV concept Pininfarina showed at the 2004 Paris show.

2009 Pininfarina B0 Electric VehicleIn the transition from concept to reality, some changes occured. Though designers saw fit to add two more doors - granting the hatchback a maximum capacity of four - perhaps the most noticeable feature of the production-intent B0 are its solar cells. Placed not only across the city car's entire roof but also its front fascia, the cells actually serve to recharge the car's battery pack.

That pack comes courtesy of Bollare, which has toiled away on its own battery design for the past fifteen years. Like most other contemporary EV batteries, Bollore's are lithium-ion cells, but are constructed in a different manner. Rather than sandwiching thick conductors and electrolyte, Bollare's battery uses thin films, allowing a smaller battery. Despite the battery's size, Pininfarina says the B0 has a range of approximately 153 miles, a recharge time of only a few hours, and a top-end of 80 mph.

Pininfarina excitedly insists the B0 is a production-ready vehicle, not a concept - plans to put the EV into limited production by the fall of 2009 seem to indicate they're serious. Though we've not heard official pricing, early reports suggested the B0 should cost approximately $23,000 - though that figure doesn't include the cost of leasing the lithium-ion battery packs.

2009 Nissan Maxima

The Nissan Maxima nameplate has a sports sedan history, although in recent years, the car has trailed its competitors in terms of the enthusiast driving experience. With the 2009 Nissan Maxima, Nissan has tried to restore some of the sporting character to the name, though reviews read by TheCarConnection.com show that results are mixed.

2009 Nissan Maxima-12009 Nissan Maxima-2The Nissan 2009 Maxima boasts a similarly sized engine to the outgoing model, but for this latest incarnation, Road & Track says "Nissan has pumped up the VQ-series 3.5-liter V-6" to make "290 bhp at 6400 rpm and 261 lb.-ft. of torque at 4400 rpm." Those numbers represent an increase of 35 horsepower and 9 pound-feet of torque, and the power boost is definitely evident during acceleration. ConsumerGuide feels "acceleration is strong from a stop, and Maxima has reserves of power at the ready for highway maneuvers." Autoblog also praises the "seamless acceleration" afforded by the V-6, while Car and Driver notes that the Nissan Maxima is "a peppy performer, sprinting to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds."

Although the strong engine is capable of posting very competitive acceleration numbers, reviews read by TheCarConnection.com contain few positive impressions of the Nissan Maxima's transmission. Cars.com says the Nissan 2009 Maxima comes with a "continuously variable automatic transmission, which is the only transmission available this year." Autoblog reviewers confess that, "as enthusiasts, they were totally unable to embrace the CVT." Although the CVT does offer "a new 'drive sport' ('Ds') mode for enthusiasts designed to increase acceleration feel and maintain engine speed during cornering," the Autoblog reviewers still feel "the response was frustrating." Automobile is somewhat more impressed with the CVT, but they still report that, "for all the CVT's cleverness," they can't help "wishing for the option of a manual gearbox."

Power and acceleration tell only part of the performance story; the other aspect of performance centers on a car's handling characteristics. In this regard, the 2009 Nissan Maxima doesn't disappoint. ConsumerGuide says the "ride is firm, but not overly so," and they call the Nissan Maxima "composed and comfortable in most situations."

2008 Hyundai Veracruz

The power is available from the 260-hp, 3.8-liter V-6 engine. An abundance of critics’ complaints centered on the six-speed automatic transmission. “Goose the gas pedal for an aggressive pass and a confused throttle or off-guard transmission causes a noticeable delay,” described MyRide.com. “In merging and passing situations the refined six-speed transmission can be a little reluctant to kick down into a lower gear,” agreed Kelley Blue Book, “but keep squeezing the accelerator pedal and the Veracruz rewards with enough power to get the job done.”

2008 Hyundai VeracruzThe automatic transmission has Shiftronic, which brings a manual shift gate by which drivers can manually select the gears one at a time, but there was also some criticism around how it worked. “All buyers will appreciate the manual shift control, though the Veracruz executes its own upshifts early, which serves to steal some fun,” said MyRide.com.

The Veracruz’s smooth ride and safe, stable handling, but few went so far as to say that it felt sporty or exciting. Cars.com reported that the Veracruz had quite a bit of body roll (lean) on twisty roads, while ConsumerGuide remarked, “Suspension tuning favors ride quality over handling response,” also noting the body lean in corners and the lack of steering feel. “Still, Veracruz never felt unstable, even on slick roads,” said ConsumerGuide. Popular Mechanics also mentioned the steering’s “rather numb” feel on-center.

When TheCarConnection.com took a Veracruz on a weekend camping trip, transmission hesitation was especially noticeable in the mountains, though it never bothered us on level ground. Even at high altitude, the V-6 had plenty of pep to haul three and loads of gear. Handling was, as reported, on the mushy side but safe. It should be noted that the Veracruz isn’t in its element even on unpaved roads, nor is it configured for extensive off-roading.

570 HP Kicherer CL 60 Coupé

Some might call Lake Constance-based Kicherer’s obsession with making Mercedes-Benz products go faster an unhealthy one. Of course, those people clearly fail to appreciate the pleasure that 900Nm of torque at one’s command can bring. Kicherer’s latest is the CL 60 Coupe, based on the Mercedes CL600 luxury coupe.

570 HP Kicherer CL 60 Coupé The twin-turbo V12 CL600 sits pretty at the top of the Mercedes two-door lineup, and Kicherer’s wizards have left the basic package alone. Under the skin, however, things are a bit more exciting. The V12’s power has been boosted from 517 to 570, with a corresponding increase in torque to 900Nm. A modified transmission control module and locking rear differential ensure that the additional power gets to the road in a relatively dignified fashion, and the chassis has been lowered by 25mm. The CL 60 Coupe also features unique 20-inch Kicherer RS-1 wheels. A body kit and carbon trim set the CL 60 apart from stock CL600s nicely.

2010 Mazda3 Spied

Yesterday spied photographs got the best look at the upcoming 2010 Mazda 3. This all new sport compact was originally due to go on sale sometime in the last half of 2009, but sources say it will now hit showrooms late 2009 as a 2010 model year car.

2010 Mazda3-12010 Mazda3-2Riding on Ford’s global C1 platform, the new Mazda3 will measure in a bit longer and wider than the current model. The sportier-looking Mazda3 will also get a small bump in horsepower – as well as a boost in fuel efficiency.

Although this the American version spied here, our photographer reports seeing buttons for heated seats, satellite radio and an MP3 hard drive.

Under the hood Mazda is expected to increase the juice, with the current 2.3-litre motor rumoured to be bored out to a 2.5-litre. That should give the new 3 10-20kW more power compared to the current 108kW (115kW for the SP23).

Mazda insiders say the new Mazda3 will make its official debut at the LA Auto Show in November this year.

Lexus IS 250C at 2008 Paris Auto Show

One of Lexus’ premieres for the Paris Motor Show was the new Lexus IS 250C. We really loved the IS range ever since it was introduced, it’s a really tough competitor for the German cars, and the IS 250C sounds and looks very promising also, when it will debut, next summer. Like its name says, the IS 250C is powered by the 2.5 liter V6 engine that delivers 208 hp (153 kW) mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. According to Lexus, the lightweight folding aluminium roof is the world’s fastest three-part roof, with an opening time of just 20 seconds.

Lexus IS 250COf course, extra attention was given to the car’s aerodynamics and safety, especially when running with the top open. By fitting the car with a steeply raked windscreen, ultra-smooth cabin profile, aerodynamically efficient, “duck-tail” rear styling featuring “airkick” effect, rear tail lamp clusters, and a set of aerodynamic under-body covers, the IS 250C’s drag coefficient is just 0.29 (0.27Cd rating for the sedan version).

Lamborghini Estoque at the Paris Auto Show

After a lot of teasing from the Italian carmaker, today the official debut of the Lamborghini Estoque finally took place, at the Paris Motor Show. The four door coupe is actually a design study created by Lamborghini for the French show and, with four seats and luggage space shows their vision of the perfect “everyday sports car”. Like we said before, the name Estoque comes from the name of a sword used by matador in bull fights. Though I don’t really dig all this four door coupe thing, I must admit that Lamborghini did a great job with this one, because it looks amazing, with features like its styling inspired by the Murcielago LP-640 and the Reventon or the large 22 inch wheels.

Lamborghini Estoque -1Lamborghini Estoque -2The press release also mentions that Lamborghini hasn’t yet decided whether this concept will be the starting point of a third model in the company’s range. They’re probably waiting to see the feedback for this concept and, judging by what we’ve seen, we’ll probably see this on the streets some day.

GTbyCitroen Concept at the Paris Motor Show

After a lot of ’striptease’ teasing, Citroen finally unveiled their concept car, here in Paris. The GTbyCitroen concept, besides looking incredibly good, also sets a premiere. 2011 Audi Q3

Audi has long been known to have a small crossover in the works, likely named Q3. So how might this mini SUV look? Our illustrator has created two images to answer that question.
Originally thought to be a three-door, sources now indicate the Q3 actually has the typical four-door configuration. A recent rumor suggests the vehicle might actually be named Q1, but Q3 seems like a more logical progression from Q7 and Q5.

2011 Audi Q3-12011 Audi Q3-2To be underpinned by a longer and stronger version of the next-generation Volkswagen Polo architecture, known internally as PQ24, the new Q should get a body that is just over 155 inches in length.

Citroen Hybrid WRC

While Citroen’s headliner at Paris this year is the massive, oddball GT, we’re more interested in this pint-sized brawler. It’s the C4 WRC Hymotion4. You read that right — WRC, as in World Rally Chapmionship. The car is equipped with the company’s Hymotion4 system, which uses regenerative braking to charge rear-mounted battery packs.

Citroen Hybrid WRC In turn, those batteries power an additional electric motor for an extra boost during acceleration or to power the vehicle without the petrol mill up front. It can also be used in cooperation with the gasoline engine to reduce fuel consumption by about 30 percent. Though this is just a concept for the time being, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Loeb launching one of these things through WRC stages sometime soon.

Jaguar XKR-S

Quiz time. What has a supercharged 4.2-liter V8 with 420 horsepower and 412 lb-ft of torque? No guesses? Here’s a hint: it nails the 60 mph mark from a dead stop in a shade over 5 seconds, has a top speed of around 174 mph and just so happens to be the fastest Jaguar XK thus far. Put down your pencils.

Jaguar XKR-SThat sirs, is the Jaguar XKR-S. Built with a light-weight aluminum body structure and reworked aerodynamics, the S sits close to 20 mph faster on the top end than its XKR brother thanks to some hard work by Jaguar’s Special Vehicle’s Team. Nearly every surface of this car has been touched by those speed freaks on some level, making for one bad feline. The new chin spoiler even (almost) makes the Taurus grill work. That is, if we were to ever see it here in America. As it sits, this is one kitty that’s keeping to the Kingdom.

Chinese Jeep Hurricane clone

Ostensibly a replica of the Jeep Hurricane concept from 2005, the Chinese replica does away with the dual 5.7L HEMI V8 engines for a single 650cc unit. That lone powerplant sits up front and powers the rear wheels, not all four like the concept. Of course, it goes without saying that
