2008 SAAB 9-3 Vector Review

Engine: 1910cc four-cylinder turbo diesel
Power: 110kW @ 4,000rpm
Torque: 320Nm @ 2,000 - 2,750rpm
Transmission: Sentronic Six-Speed Automatic
Driven Wheels: Front
0-100km/h: 11.0 seconds (Claimed)
Top speed: 210km/h (Claimed)
Safety: ESP (with TCS); ABS (with BA, CBC & EBD); Front, Side and Curtain Airbags
NCAP rating: 5 Stars
Turning circle: 10.8 metres
Wheels: Alloy 17″ x 7.5″ (As Tested - Usually 17″ x 7″)
Spare Wheel: Space Saver
Fuel tank: 58 litres
Fuel consumption : 6.8 litre / 100km (ADR Combined Average)
Fuel type: Diesel
Towing Capacity: 1,600kg (Braked)
Weight: 1,509kg (Tare)

Take the 9-3 on face value and the car is quite impressive, rather stunning to look at and surprisingly comfortable to ride in, but start blending the various parts and practicalities together as a whole and you soon realise a few things could have been done a little better. Smooth parallel shoulder and hip lines carry unbroken through the length of the vehicle to a well finished rear end sporting frosted tail lights and high boot line.

2008 SAAB 9-3 Vector-12008 SAAB 9-3 Vector-22008 SAAB 9-3 Vector-3Upfront the 110kW 1.9 litre common-rail turbo diesel does a brilliant job of keeping things on the boil once moving and with thanks to a healthy 320Nm, pulls rather strongly mid gear. The down side however is that the performance suffers incredibly from (initial) turbo lag.

Braking though is good, reassuring, and a lot better than the 9-5, but the pedal feel is still somewhat firm and requires far more input than similarly priced European or Japanese rivals. Still the ABS with Brake Assist, Cornering Brake Control and Electronic Brake Force Distribution, brings the 9-3 to rest confidently and drew little in the way of messy black dust all over the sporty 17″ alloys which was nice for a change come clean up time.

In all though SAAB 9-3 is a great looker, is cheap to run and is surprisingly comfortable. Whilst it does lack some of the driving finesse you’d expect of a premium brand, and though it could do with a little tweaking to satiate the needs of a fiercely fought price bracket, it’s has one unique thing going for it - people just love to admire it.

New KITT - OFFICIAL PHOTOS

The Knight Rider TV movie was not good. The updated, Shelby Mustang-based KITT looked undeniably cool (when not in Ugly... er... Attack Mode, at least), but the acting was wooden and the writing was a horror show. Still, the ending completely set up a potential ongoing story. Today comes word that the ratings were apparently good enough for the suits to give a thumbs-up for a new weekly series starting this Fall. Early reports suggest a Friday night timeslot is in the works, but that's subject to change; all will be known on Wednesday when NBC presents its early upfronts.

KITT-1KITT-2We'll assume that at the very least, stars Justin Breuning (Mike Traceur) and Deanna Russo (Mike Traceur's Girlfriend) will return to fill our flatscreens with emotionless line reading. And since voicing KITT should be a relatively easy payday for Val Kilmer, we'd expect him to reprise his role, as well. As for the Hoff, who walked on for a brief cameo at the end of the pilot, who knows? The big winner here is Ford, which now gets an hour-long weekly showcase for the Shelby GT500KR KITT. Based on the stupendously lousy pilot, however, we're going to put on our prognostication hats and set the over/under for this Knight Rider reboot at 10 episodes. Unless NBC ups the quality in a big, big way, the under is a lock.

2008 Volvo V70 T6

For starters, the new Volvo V70 only comes in one guise for the Aussie market. The ‘T6’ title refers to the unit under the bonnet. The turbocharged 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder motor pulsates 210kW and a very brisk 400Nm of torque. Power is delivered via a 6-speed automatic gearbox. All these turbocharger shenanigans return a fuel consumption figure of 11.3-litres/100km – pretty modest when you consider the performance!

If the acceleration doesn’t blow you away, the handling certainly will. Coupled with a Haldex all-wheel-drive system, the V70 has tremendous grip through corners. Sitting on 18” wheels with 245-wide Pirelli Pzero tyres, grip levels are prodigious – making it the best way to drop the kids off to school and make it home before your favourite morning show begins.

2008 Volvo V70 T6 -12008 Volvo V70 T6-2The interior is typical Volvo – clean and sleek. The quality of materials used is extremely impressive, as is the fit and finish. The cabin is very quiet at highway speeds, indicating good cabin sealing. Front and rear leg room caters for families, with more than enough space for adults to stretch out.

The advanced key fob allows the drive to obtain information about the car’s status, meaning that you will never have to think back and try to remember if you have locked the car, as the key stores the last state.

Optional radar cruise control allows the driver to maintain a set distance between their vehicle and the car in front. This allows the driver to concentrate on one thing – driving. The system can also pre-emptively brake for the driver if it senses an impact is imminent, this further reduces the braking distance in the event of a collision.

Recommended Retail Price: $67,950

Options fitted: Radar cruise control ($3,950); Speed sensitive power steering ($750); sunglass holder ($100); Volvo navigation system ($3,950); sunroof ($2,150).

2010 Acura NSX - Rendered Speculation

We've known for quite some time now that the Acura NSX replacement would feature a V10 engine likely at the front of the vehicle and possibly powering all four wheels via a version of the brand's SH-AWD. Now that Nissan's amazing new GT-R has set a new standard for what a Japanese supercar can be, the next NSX had better be something impressive indeed, and rumors are that it will be just that.

2010 Acura NSXWhat we still don't know is what this car will look like, so we're very interested in what Japanese car-buff-mag Best Car claims is a rendering of the new NSX. If this is an accurate portrayal, we're glad that Acura stylists found a way to leave off the big metal triangular grill that is plaguing the rest of its lineup, as it just doesn't seem befitting for a sportscar. Although the only rendering offered is an angled shot from the drivers-side front, this coupe still seems a little generic to our eyes, but at least looks better than what we saw from the Advanced Sports Car Concept last year in Detroit.

Fans of Acura's first generation NSX are going to have a tough time waiting until 2010 for the next version to bow, but we're sure to have an endless stream of spy shots and a perpetually overactive rumormill to keep us busy till then.

2010 Cadillac BRX Caught - Spy Shots

Riding on GM’s new TE (Theta-Epsilon) chassis, this new, smaller Caddy will start production in May of 2009 at the Ramos Arizpe plant. The General will look to build about 75,000 units annually. Codenamed GMT166, Cadillac will share the TE platform with Saab for the 9-4x (GMT168) that starts production in the fall of 2009.

Powertrain choices will surely include the 300-hp, direct-injection 3.6-liter V-6 found in the CTS. A 2.0-liter turbodiesel variant is also in the works, however, it remains to be seen whether that model will be sold in U.S.

2010 Cadillac BRX Caught-12010 Cadillac BRX Caught-2Through the camouflage on this BRX prototype, we can see the production grill will follow the Provoq concept almost exactly, while the rear camouflage attempts to hide the true roofline - but we can tell the production greenhouse will swoop downward in the rear just as it does on the Provoq. Quite honestly, we don’t see many differences from the concept at all. It seems as if the tailfin taillights of the concept may even find their way to production.

Two things we did not see on the concept, but do see on the prototype, are the dual exhaust outlets integrated into the bumper. While shooting, we also noticed that the BRX will feature the same pop-up navigation screen found in the CTS sedan.

Buyers dropping more coin on the 2008 Chevy Malibu

The 2008 Chevy Malibu has snatched up awards and media accolades, and JD Power data shows that customers are paying Chevy dealers handsomely to own one. The average transaction price of a Chevy Malibu is $22,358 -- $5,000 higher than the inherently uncool last-gen 'Bu. Twenty-one percent of buyers are also opting for the top-of-the-line LTZ vs. only 5% for the outgoing model.

2008 Chevy MalibuThe news isn't all rosy, however, as most of these customers are trading in other GM products to get themselves into the North American Car of the Year. Only 1.4% of buyers traded in a Toyota Camry, 1.3% swapped a Nissan Altima, and less than 1% turned in a Honda Accord. Those aren't exactly the kind of numbers GM will want to brag about, but at least the General is pulling in the equivalent of two Tata Nanos more per car than the last generation model did.

2009 HUMMER H2 and H2 SUT will be E85 compatible

In Dallas, a businessman has spent half a million dollars to install nine pumps that dispense E85, E10, and biodiesel. The catch: the businessman is a HUMMER dealer, and the pumps are next to his dealership. The station is called Classic Clean Fuels, and it is intended to make a statement for next year's H2 and H2 SUT, which will be the first production models to be Flex-fuel capable.

2009 HUMMER H2You won't need to drive a HUMMER to get E85 at the station. The pumps are open to the public, a first for a dealer-owned gas station. By 2010, GM has said all HUMMERs will be biofuel-capable. GM plans to market 15 Flexfuel models next year, but only one percent of the country's service stations sell E85. GM is using that as an opportunity to open the public's (and dealers') minds to putting alternative fuel stations in alternative places.

Said GM's Larry Burns, "Down the road we may even want to consider hydrogen dispensers at dealerships."

2008 Chrysler Town and Country

Much has been made about the decline in popularity of the minivan. With the proliferation of crossovers and SUV-lights, one might think that the mommy-box market was tanking. After all, GM and Ford bailed on the segment, so it must not be viable, right? Wrong. The reality is that while the minivan market has shrunk some, with over a million annual sales it’s still a big sand box with room for perennial leader Chrysler to duke it out with its remaining competitors from Asia and Germany.

2008 Chrysler Town & CountryIntroduced at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, the 2008 Chrysler Town & Country is more squared-off styling represents an edgy departure from the Clorox bottle shape of the previous generation. Particularly from the rear, the van’s boxy design looks as if it were artfully drawn with a rafter square.

Perennial power
Chrysler’s 3.8-liter V-6 powers the Town and Country Touring model we tested. Two other V-6s propel the trim levels that bracket the Touring; the 3.3-liter on the LX and the 4.0-liter on the Limited. Our van’s powertrain included a six-speed automatic, and the combination provided more than adequate performance for this class of vehicle. With 197 horses, power was never lacking around town or on interstates.

Surprisingly quiet at highway speeds, the engine sounded rather raucous when the throttle blades opened wide. Unlike some competitive engines that emit a powerful but muted growl when poked, the 3.8-liter was aurally unrefined. Likewise, the six-speed shifted smoothly under most circumstances, but lost its buttery feel when rushed. Of course, this is a minivan and not a BMW sedan.

Outfitted with the 3.8-liter/6-speed, the Town and Country is said to deliver mileage of 16 city/23 highway. With its 20-gallon fuel tank, one could reasonably expect to cover over 400 miles between fill ups. We found no reason to doubt this estimate.

2008 Ferrari F430 Coupe Review

Specifications
• Engine: 4.3-litre V8
• Power: 360kW @ 8500rpm
• Torque: 465Nm @ 5250rpm
• Transmission: 6sp Seq. Manual Auto-Clutch
• 0-100km/h: 4.1 seconds
• Max speed: 315km/h
• Fuel tank capacity: 95 litres
• Fuel type: minimum 95
• Fuel consumption (combined): 18.3-litres/100kms
• Weight: 1290kg (Tare Mass)
• Built in: Italy
• CO2 emissions: 420g/km

2008 Ferrari F430 Coupe-12008 Ferrari F430 Coupe-22008 Ferrari F430 Coupe-3The F430 bears a strong resemblance to the 360 that it replaces, however it’s a totally different creation. The two front intakes are not only inspired by the 156 F1 car that Phil Hill drove to victory n 1961, but also to cool the carbon-ceramic front brakes.

There are several features of the car that show just how scientific the design process was – the air flows in a vector between the twin struts of the wing-mirror, along a groove in the door and neatly into the rear intake cowls. Similarly, another aerodynamic work of genius draws air along the shut-line at the bottom of the doors and into another set of intakes, which service the rear brakes. A completely flat underside and rear splitter help to provide more down-force.

The biggest miracle of design is that the renowned Italian automotive designer, Pininfarina managed to achieve all of this and still managed to make this Berlinetta look fantastic, in an athletic kind of way. Unveiled in 2004 at the Paris Motor Show, this F1-inspired mid-rear engined super car was launched in 2005. It’s powered by a naturally aspirated 360 kW, 4.3-litre V8 (456 Nm of torque), has a lightweight aluminium chassis and body panels and is bristling with technology developed on the race track.

Advanced aerodynamics, suspension and the electronic differential (E-Diff) ensure that performance dynamics are nothing short of astounding. Ferrari F430 has a maximum speed of 315 km/h.

A welcome addition to the F430 is the Manettino switch. Explained briefly, this is an F1 style set-up selector on the steering wheel. In ‘Sport’ mode the suspension height is lowered and damping stiffness is increased, the engine management is reigned in and safety systems and traction control become less intrusive.

‘Race’ mode gives you a bit more and will let you slide enough to make you look like a superstar but there’s still enough safety stuff looking after you if you overcook it. In ‘CST/OFF’ mode, everything’s off and if you’re not a superstar, you’ll probably kill yourself.

BMW M3 downsizing?

Future incarnations of the BMW M3 may no longer use the newly introduced V8 powerplant, with tougher emissions standards and environmental expectations encouraging BMW’s M division to seek more power from smaller engines.

BMW M3The BMW M3 has always featured powerful naturally aspirated engines, beginning with an inline-4 in the original which progressed to the iconic inline-6 and then finally the current high-revving V8.

However in order to continue producing faster and more powerful sports cars, BMW’s M division may create another first for the M3 - with BMW boss Norbert Reithofer expressing interest in the 223kW twin-turbo 3.0-litre inline-six as a possible alternative to displacement and cylinders.

The trend toward smaller engines doesn’t stop with the M3 range however, with BMW’s V8 diesel also likely to be replaced with a twin turbocharged I6.

Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera production ends

Production of the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera has ended in favour of the newly released LP560-4 Gallardo which made its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

Lamborghini Gallardo SuperleggeraDespite having only been in production for almost a year, the lighter and more powerful Superleggera was only ever intended as a limited production model.

Revisions to the Gallardo’s V10 engine raised maximum power to 388kW at 8000rpm and 510Nm, whilst a 70kg weight reduction meant it could accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 3.8 seconds.

The Lamborghini LP560-4 Gallardo produces 412kW and 539Nm from its larger 5.2-litre V10 engine, out pacing the lightweight Superleggera in the sprint to 100km/h by 0.1 seconds.

CarAdvice will be bringing you a full review of not only the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera but also the stunning Gallardo Spyder in the coming week.

2011 Rolls-Royce Sedan Spied

We nabbed some new spy shots of Rolls Royce’s new baby–dubbed internally as the RR4. Despite sharing some platform elements with the upcoming BMW 7-Series, the RR4 still manages to have entirely different dimensions–longer, wider and taller, with a longer wheelbase to boot. The RR4 has clearly been inspired by the Rolls-Royce Phantom, only a bit less ostentatious. The RR4 will give BMW a new entry to slot between the Phantom and the 7-Series, finally providing some meaningful cannon fodder for rival Bentley’s Continental Flying Spur.

2008 Chrysler Grand Voyager

Chrysler has released the all new 2008 Chrysler Grand Voyager in Australia with a starting price of $56,990. The 2008 model has improved significantly, with the entry price only increasing by $1,000.

2008 Chrysler Grand Voyager-12008 Chrysler Grand Voyager-2The old 3.3-litre V6 engine has been replaced with a new 3.8-litre petrol V6 and, for the first time, a 2.8-litre turbo diesel is also available. Chrysler says there is more than 30 new improvements for the ‘original’ people mover. The new engines are now coupled to six-speed automatic transmissions which replace the aging four-speeds.

Other notable features include standard Reversing camera across the range, all-new Swivel ’n Go™ seating system, the availability of dual-DVD screens for second- and third-row entertainment and MyGIG™ Multimedia Infotainment System.

The most obvious change, however, is the all-new interior and exterior design which now resemble the rest of the Chrysler line-up. On first glance you might assume that the ‘all-new’ 2008 Grand Voyager is only a facelift. Not so.

2007 Kia Kee Concept

(from Kia Press Release) The all-new Kia Kee sports coupe concept vehicle today made its U.S. debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Previously introduced at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in Germany, the Kee is an expression of the company's emphasis on design and incorporates styling cues that will establish a design language and identity for the brand.

2007 Kia Kee Concept-12007 Kia Kee Concept-2The Kia Kee (pronounced 'key') is a 4.3-metre long, four-seater, 2-door coupe with svelte, newly proportioned lines resulting from a slightly lengthened greenhouse. It is a new interpretation of a 2+2 coupe with an imposing road presence that demonstrates an uncluttered, pure and timeless execution and represents a new design ethos for Kia.

Designed in Europe under the guidance of Kia's Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, the sports coupe concept is named Kee for several reasons. "Kee refers to the English word 'key' as the coupe embodies design elements which will become essential to the future 'look' of Kia vehicles," explains Schreyer. "The coupe also represents the 'key' which will open the door to success for our brand and acknowledges the Chinese and Korean word 'Ki' – the cultural concept for life-force or spiritual energy."

McLaren F1 LM

Ten years ago, Lewis Hamilton was only 13 years old and was already under the wing of McLaren chief Ron Dennis. A young Lewis visited the McLaren headquarters in Woking, England, and fixed his eyes on a bright orange McLaren F1 LM supercar sitting on display at the factory. Good taste, Lewis: only five roadgoing LMs were made, and each one is said to be worth about $4 million. Produced in 1995 to commemorate McLaren's win at Le Mans, it was the fastest supercar of its day, and with a 0-60 time of under three seconds, it remains one of the fastest to this day.

McLaren F1 LM-1McLaren F1 LM-2Ron Dennis has now promised Hamilton that if he wins the world championship this year – and locks up the constructors' title together with teammate Heikki Kovalainen – the car will be his. Not a bad bonus.

Wooden Opel

I wouldn’t quite advice you to practice what this guy above has done to his Opel unless you are rich enough to posses a tree farm for otherwise the environmentalists would eat up on you. That would have taken quite a solid trunk in the making. Defying Critique, it does something which I never came across; an automotive piece-of-art which is mobile.

Wooden Opel-1Wooden Opel-2Can’t just think of a reason to do so lest the fact we know how useless those Opel cars are. Probably, Robert Frost would have been the best man to say something more about it for the fact that the pictures reveal an invigorating background with the usage of ‘woods’ as he normally puts it. Was it the car that could made him change the famous lines ‘I’ve miles to go before I sleep’, for it could have helped him in treading those miles quicker.

Roewe 550 sedan spied at commercial shoot

According to China Car Times, the 550 will be powered by the same 1.8L turbo found under the hood of the Roewe 750 (the re-engineered Rover 75). 2009 Acura TSX - First Drive

The first generation Acura TSX received glowing reviews from the media and owners alike. While not having the most exciting styling or the beefiest of powertrains, the TSX offered a sensible and reliable vehicle with plenty of standard options that didn't break the bank. Our man Damon road-tripped a 2007 TSX up to Lake Tahoe and was pleasantly surprised with the driving characteristics and smooth powertrain, although he put Acura's turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-4 on the wish list.

2010 BMW Z4 - Spy Photos

BMW’s next-generation Z4 sports car has been photographed quite often in various stages of its development. These latest shots show a test car caught in the streets of Munich.

2010 BMW Z4-12010 BMW Z4 -2The Z4 will replace the current model that has been on the market since 2003, and it will be about the same size. The most significant feature on the new car is that BMW will exchange the canvas top for a retractable steel roof, like that on the Mercedes SLK.

The new Z4 is expected to offer a choice of more powerful engines. Riding on the latest 3-Series chassis, it may use the same range of four- and six-cylinder engines, and for the first time there is talk of additional diesel engines, too. The top of the line version will be the Z4 M.

While the current Z4 is being built in BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the new Z4 will be built in Regensburg, Germany, with production starting in late 2009.

Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire

It's a shame that more of Suzuki's line-up isn't as well designed and executed as the nimble little Swift hatchback. But we swear, this was not what we had in mind.

Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire-1
Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire-2Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., the country's largest automaker and majority owned its the Japanese parent company, has taken the wraps off of the ironically named Swift DZire, initial spy shots of which we lamented several months ago. Rather contrary to its name, we're left wondering what's so desirable about a trunk that it's worth butchering erstwhile attractive hatchbacks. The resulting conversion ends up looking like the hatch version, only with a tumor growing out the back. Maruti calls its "The Heart Car", but we'll go for the bypass, thank you very much.

SEAT Leon FR550 TDI

While it sister company Audi continues to forge ahead in Le Mans-class racing under diesel power, the SEAT division is likewise launching an assault on the British Touring Car Championship with an oil-burning Leon TDI. The Spanish automaker is also launching a special edition Leon for the road to coincide with its competition counterpart's race debut.

SEAT Leon FR550 TDIMechanically, the limited-edition Leon FR550 is largely the same as the standard FR – one rung down on the SEAT performance ladder from the top-of-the-line Cupra – powered by the same two-liter turbodiesel on the Leon FR TDI. The details are what set the FR550 apart, carrying such touches as racing-style buckets seats, special badging, USB connectivity, 18-inch "Draco" alloys and a range of special colors. The turbodiesel Leon FR will hit sixty in 8.2 and return 39.2 mpg city/47 mpg highway. If they act fast enough, British customers can pick up one of the 550 examples of the FR550 being offered at a £400 premium over the standard version.

Lexus IS F

No luxury car range is complete with-out a super-saloon these days – so Lexus has come up with this. The IS F is the Japanese manufacturer’s answer to the BMW M3 and Mercedes C63 AMG. It lacks the heritage of its European rivals, but can it match the old guard on UK roads?

Lexus IS F-1Lexus IS F-2Judged on looks alone, this version of the IS is a rather sober piece of kit. Lowered suspension and 19-inch alloys give a ground-hugging stance, yet the new front bumper, side sills and large bonnet bulge are surprisingly discreet.

Our model’s black paintwork also reduced the impact of the standard anthracite wheels, and on our drive no other road users paid the sporty Lexus any attention. The only details which spoil its Q-car credentials are the two pairs of stacked oval tailpipes that protrude from the back bumper.

It’s a similar story inside, because the cabin is pretty much unchanged from the standard IS 250. You do get loads of kit, including sat-nav, sports seats and a 14-speaker stereo, but the new silver trim on the centre console is somewhat underwhelming.

A quick look under the IS F’s bonnet should be enough to restore faith in the brand, because crammed into the engine bay is an incredible 5.0-litre V8. It develops a mouth-watering 417bhp and powers the saloon from 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds.

However, the car’s pure pace tells only half the story, because the high-revving unit is smooth, with a linear power delivery and pin-sharp responses. It’s muted in normal driving, but once you pass 3,600rpm, a valve in the exhaust manifold opens and the volume instantly rises, creating a fantastic V8 soundtrack.

While it’s still fun to drive, most of that enjoyment comes from its mighty V8. And in this class, the IS F’s limited handling involvement won’t appeal to everyone – especially when you’re paying £51,000 for the privilege.

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

(from Hyundai Press Release) Hyundai unveiled Genesis Coupe, the new benchmark for attainable 300-horsepower sport coupes, during a press conference at the New York International Auto Show t. The 2010 Genesis Coupe is a purpose-built rear-wheel drive sport coupe featuring two performance-focused engines – a 212-horsepower (est.), 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a range-topping all-aluminum, 306-horsepower (est.), DOHC 3.8-liter V6 engine. Genesis Coupe is scheduled to join the Hyundai lineup in the spring of 2009.

GENESIS COUPE HIGHLIGHTS
• Hyundai’s second rear-wheel drive performance car
• 306 horsepower (est.)from enhanced 3.8-liter V6 from Genesis sedan
• Std. 212 horsepower (est.) turbocharged, intercooled inline four cylinder
• Genesis Coupe arrives in the spring of 2009 as a 2010 model

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe-12010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe-2Following the introduction earlier this year of the rear-wheel drive Genesis sport sedan, Genesis Coupe is Hyundai’s most dynamic performance car ever and the second consecutive all-new model introduction from Hyundai appealing directly to the car enthusiast. Genesis Coupe uses the same flexible rear-wheel drive architecture originally developed for the Genesis sport sedan.

POWERTRAINS
Two engines infuse Genesis Coupe with performance. The 3.8-liter Lambda DOHC V6 engine delivers an estimated 306 horsepower (310 horsepower using premium fuel) and 263 lb.-ft. of torque on regular unleaded. This engine will launch the Genesis Coupe from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under six seconds. To maximize the power band, the 3.8-liter engine utilizes Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) on intake cam shafts and a new Variable Intake System (VIS) that helps cylinders breathe efficiently at both low and high RPM. The better breathing results in outstanding off-the-line acceleration and passing performance, and remarkable fuel efficiency. The V6 engine uses an alloy block and cylinder heads for lighter weight and thermal efficiency, and features timing chains with no scheduled maintenance.

The turbocharged, intercooled 2.0-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder benefits from CVVT on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. The 2.0-liter turbo generates an estimated 212 horsepower (223 horsepower using premium fuel) and 217 lb.-ft. of torque. It also features a cast-aluminum cylinder block and cylinder head. Both engines feature a free flowing dual cat-back exhaust and an available limited slip differential to put the power to the ground.

HIGH PERFORMANCE BRAKING SYSTEMS
Brembo four-piston calipers clamp down on 13.4-inch front brake rotors and 13-inch rear rotors on SE models. All other models get substantial 12.6-inch front ventilated rotors and 12.4-inch rotors in the rear with floating single piston calipers.

2008 Skoda Roomster Comparo

Models tested:
Skoda Roomster 1.6 Petrol (automatic) $29,290 - Tested
Skoda Roomster 1.9 Turbo Diesel (manual) $28,990 - Tested

Options:
Metallic Paint $540 (Fitted); Park Distance Control (Rear) $690 (Fitted); Alarm System $530; Roof Rails $330 (Fitted); Panoramic Roof $1690 (Fitted).

2008 Skoda Roomster Comparo-12008 Skoda Roomster Comparo-2The funky Skoda Roomster is no stranger to the CarAdvice office having been reviewed by Karl some months ago. So rather than review it again, I used the Roomster as a little science project to help solve the most important conundrum of the modern age – petrol versus diesel.
My first guinea pig was the petrol variant, in this case the Roomster Style 1.6 litre four-cylinder. The double overhead cam sixteen valve engine revs rather freely and like most petrol engines, develops the majority of its motivation higher in the rev range.

The multi-point injection set up helps develop a rather smooth 77kW which is on board at 5,600 rpm, just shy of the red line. Coupled with a somewhat lack luster torque figure of 153Nm @ 3,800rpm the figures don’t really do a lot to inspire a would-be buyer, at least on paper.

Fortunately for the petrol Roomster the transmission is its saving grace, which is why I chose to review the automatic. In my opinion it does a better job than the manual when mated to this particular petrol engine, and made for a fairer comparison to the TDI model.

The six-speed automatic (with sport mode and tiptronic style shifter – floor mounted) adapts itself to your driving style and very quickly learns how best to react to throttle input selecting the required gear to keep Roomster moving at a respectable pace.

Moving on to the diesel now, the Roomster Style TDI comes in one guise only, the slightly higher capacity 1.9 litre five-speed manual. The single overhead cam eight valve turbo charged oiler manages 77kW, just like its petrol brother, though the power comes on sooner - 4,000rpm due to the low revving nature of a diesel engine.

2008 Geeley GT Concept

The 2008 Beijing Motor Show will play host to the usual assortment of real automakers' wares, direct knock-offs of said automakers' wares, and a few concepts and production vehicles of genuine interest beyond comedic value. We'll count the Geely GT among that last group. Details are sparse at the moment -- we have no clue what the proposed powertrain consists of, for example -- but Geely's coupe concept this year looks to be substantially more ambitious and voluptuous than the Mybo II 2-door show car it displayed last year in Shanghai. The Mybo II didn't have a whole lot going on in the looks department except a peculiar face that had us expecting it to transform into a giant robot at any moment.

2008 Geeley GT Concept-12008 Geeley GT Concept-2The Geely GT mashes up a variety of looks -- we see some Maybach Exceleo, Ferrari 612, Nissan GT-R, and assorted Peugeot in there. The end result is something that we'd actually be interested to see in person, as the preview photos (or are they renderings?) demonstrate.

2008 Kia KOUP Concept

Introducing the Korean Camaro, better known as the Kia KOUP concept, which has been unveiled at the New York International Auto Show.

A surprisingly fresh and attractive offering from Kia, the KOUP concept signals a new design direction for the otherwise bland brand. Flared wheel arches, twin exhaust outlets and an aggressive aerokit leave no doubt that this concept aims to lead Kia’s assault on the performance car market.

2008 Kia KOUP Concept-12008 Kia KOUP Concept-2Carbon-fiber highlights are used extensively both inside and out, including on the stunning alloy wheels which cradle an impressive Brembo brake package. Under the bonnet is a powerplant to match its menacing appearance, featuring a twin screw turbocharged version of the 2.0-litre Theta II four cylinder engine producing an impressive 217kW of power and 391Nm at just 2,000rpm.

The KOUP has more than enough potential on paper to compete not only with fellow turbocharged Korean sports car entrant, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0t, but also the flagship V6 Genesis Coupe.

However unlike the Hyundai, the Kia KOUP concept is built on a front-wheel drive unibody frame, coil springs and stabilizer bars complement an independent front suspension featuring MacPherson struts and an independent dual link rear suspension.

A seemingly production-ready interior uncharacteristic of the usually flamboyant Kia concept designs indicate this model is most likely destined for the production line in the near future.

2008 Volkswagen Passat V6 4Motion review

One Euro option to consider in the Estate/Avant/Wagon market is the Volkswagen Passat V6 4Motion. With more of a split dash layout, looking more like an Audi A4 in style, it pushes the conservative image away, moving more into modern territory.

2008 Volkswagen Passat V6 4Motion-12008 Volkswagen Passat V6 4Motion-22008 Volkswagen Passat V6 4Motion-3The exterior has also been upgraded, with the V-shaped chrome front end, echoing the Jetta and Golf R32, without looking too much like a boy-racer. The styling of the wagon actually suits the car’s front end better than the sedan, especially when looking at a three quarter view. There’s more of that sports-estate look and less of the droopy slater rear guards that the sedan has.

It’s essentially the same engine as in the VW Golf R32 and Multivan, just slightly muted to suit the “family” image. Yet, at 184kW and 330Nm, there’s enough poke to haul the kids and the dog across the quarter mile in 15.3 seconds. 100km/h is gone in 7.2 seconds.

The 4Motion system is also a winner. A joy on dirt and gravel, it sends plenty of power to the rear for some “hope the wife doesn’t notice” fun. Even on bitumen - with the ESP off - enter a corner at speed and just before you hit the apex, press the throttle. Load up the steering, feel the front wheels pushing wide and straight after the apex, lift off. Welcome to oversteer city.
This is a genuinely fun car to drive with adjustable handling that’s completely predictable. The Haldex coupling is used to drive the rear wheels, and is absolutely imperceptible when it kicks in, meaning it really does feel like a full-time all wheel drive vehicle.

The brakes are also excellent, slightly overdone, but the initial grab makes highway work a joy. They will fade when really pushed though, but recover quickly. The steering is electric, so it lacks feel, but it’s precise and reasonably direct. Of course, the ride is firm, but not uncomfortable and the body control is commendable.

Then there’s the kit. Rain-sensing wipers, auto lights on, eight airbags, electronic park brake, automatic hill hold, parking sensors front and rear, Xenon headlights, LED tail-lights, perforated leather seats, fold-flat floor, and of course, the most important – an umbrella holder in the drivers door. $56,990 is par for the course too, for Euro wagons in todays market.

Combine that with a rocketship engine, plenty of space, good looks and proper driveability. It has a few shortcomings, but to live with day to day the V6 Passat is good, no question.

2009 Audi A4 to offer new 2.0 TFSI, revised 3.2 FSI V6

Wagon lovers rejoice! Audi's new 2009 A4 Avant has made its official North American debut at the New York Auto Show. The press release, after the break, introduces us to the newest 2.0 liter TFSI four cylinder engine, variants of which have won "Engine of the Year" trophies three times. Coming in at 211 horsepower along with 258 lb.-ft. of torque, the A4's base engine is reportedly capable of propelling the car to sixty in 6.5 seconds.

2009 Audi A4 2.0 TFSI-12009 Audi A4 2.0 TFSI-2The impressive output of Audi's new four-banger almost makes up for their decision not to offer the sedan's 3.2 liter FSI V6 in the Avant. That engine features the newest version of the patented Audi Valvelift Technology (AVS) and offers up 265 horsepower. Six-speed transmissions will be offered in both the A4 sedan and Avant -- no mention of Quattro systems or the new 7-speed DSG. It seems like Audi's been holding back the new A4 for so long that we can hardly believe that we'll see it in dealerships this October, but we'll continue to sate your appetites with pictures until then.

Mahindra to show diesel-hybrid pickup at SAE Congress

Potential buyers interested in the upcoming Mahindra and Mahindra Appalachian pickup truck will get a sneak-peek of the new machine at the upcoming SAE World Congress, April 14-17 in Detroit, Michigan. The most interesting part of this news, though, is that the vehicle on display will sport a diesel/electric hybrid drivetrain, which could be the first and only such system sold in the U.S.

Mahindra and Mahindra Appalachian pickupThe standard diesel Appalachian truck is expected to come with a 2.2-liter four cylinder diesel engine putting out between 140 and 150 horsepower along with 300 lb. ft of torque. Expected to sell in the low $20,000 range and be available in both two and four-door versions, Mahindra could potentially re-ignite the small truck market abandoned long ago by American automakers. With the hybrid option coming in at around $5 grand more, before any available tax credits are applied, we think that this upcoming Indian truck will make some waves here in the states when it goes on sale in 2010.

2009 Nissan GT-R Review

Technically, the 2009 Nissan GT-R isn't a Skyline -- that distinction now belongs to what we know as the Infiniti G series, which is marketed as the Nissan Skyline in Japan. But we suspect that this distinction will be of little matter. From its familiar twin-turbocharged engine and all-wheel-drive layout to its telltale circular taillights, there's no mistaking the new Nissan for anything but a modern-day Skyline GT-R.

Of course, the big deal for Americans is that the 2009 GT-R marks the first time that this legendary performance car will be officially sold stateside. We also happen to be getting the best one yet; the great-granddaddy of the new GT-R, the "Godzilla" R32 Skyline GT-R produced from 1989-'93, was designed to equal the performance of the iconic Porsche 959. Nissan's benchmark for the 2009 GT-R? The mighty Porsche 997-series 911 Turbo.

2009 Nissan GT-R-12009 Nissan GT-R-2That's a tall order under any circumstances, but Nissan's President and CEO, Carlos Ghosn, sent the degree of difficulty skyrocketing when he agreed to green-light the GT-R project on two conditions: first, the base price had to be about $70,000; and second, the car had to be profitable, i.e., not merely an image-boosting "halo car" that would be sold at a loss. Improbably, the GT-R has succeeded on all counts. Ghosn's conditions have been met, and we can confirm that the 2009 Nissan GT-R is indeed a match for its Bavarian benchmark at the track. Never before has such stratospheric factory performance been available at such a reasonable price; in fact, you'd have to look long and hard to match the GT-R's performance at any price.

How does the GT-R do it? As far as that bargain-basement price tag is concerned, we'd put it down to a mixture of modern mass-production techniques and magic. Performance-wise, the gnarly Nissan has a long list of co-conspirators to thank, among them a 473-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6, a thoroughly revised version of the previous GT-R's ATTESA ET-S all-wheel-drive system, a trick suspension with adjustable dampers and a dual-clutch transmission that ranks right up there with the best in the business.

Demerits are few and mostly insignificant next to the GT-R's colossal capabilities. First off, the car is a bit heavy given its sporting mission, tipping the scales at 3,800-plus pounds -- but in light of the GT-R's physics-defying cornering ability, who cares? Probably the only time owners will really notice the extra weight is at the pump, and folks who buy 473-hp sports cars aren't likely to lose sleep over a few miles per gallon. Likewise, the angular exterior styling isn't for everyone -- but then, when a $70,000 car can get you to 60 mph faster than any Ferrari or Lamborghini currently in production, does it really matter how it looks? At the end of the day, the only unequivocal complaint we can lodge against the GT-R is that it lacks a manual transmission option. As good as the GT-R's exclusive automated manual is, you can still shift many competing models the old-fashioned way if you want, and we wish the same were true of the GT-R.

1955 Porsche 356 for the aficionados

This is a collectors dream and could just be the perfect material for a real Porsche fanatic meant straight for his garage. Forget pride, this is your chance to make those envy who believed that a Targa from the early nineties in their possession was just about perfect to bear a retro collectors repute. It belongs to an era where six-cylinders were literally unheard off and those who knew about its ability were baffled by the cost involved.

1955 Porsche 356The roots aren’t confirmed in its case but it is believed to be a sibling of the 356 Coupe from 1955, which means that it is one of those astute 356’ models from Porsche. We can keep talking about proving our fanaticism but the upshot is that it would require a whopping 112,000 Euros to have it parked in your garage, meaning you shouldn’t just be a fanatic but a moneyed one at that.

2008 Zastava Skala 55 - 2008 Belgrade Auto Show

The Easter holiday is a time of rebirth, and we can't think of a better automotive resurrection to celebrate than the Zastava Skala 55. Haven't heard of the Skala 55? Sure you have!

2008 Zastava Skala 55-12008 Zastava Skala 55-2It was sold here in the United States as the Yugo GV, and summarily tarred and feathered for being a $3,900 brand new car. Let's avoid an epic fight about the past and focus on why we're so jazzed that the rebuilt Zastava factory is still turning out these crisply styled five-doors. At the recent Belgrade Auto Show, Zastava parked a refreshed Skala 55 at its display and had one of the hits of the show.

2008 Road Trip Vehicles of the Year as chosen by Thule

There are few words in the English language which can conjure up as much meaning, and likely so many memories, as these: road trip. We've all been on them before; some are the highlights of your life and some... well, not so much. But having the right vehicle can make all the difference in the world. Thule, maker of "transportation accessories", has added its name to the ever-growing list of companies that have invented an "__ of the year" award.

Toyota Highlander Hybrid LimitedFor this particular honor, Thule has broken the automotive landscape in half, dividing its choices for the best vehicle to take a road trip in at the $30 grand mark. Without further ado, the winners are:
- Best road trip vehicle under $30,000: Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited
- Best road trip vehicle over $30,000: Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited

If you really want to read all of the reasons that Thule offers for choosing these vehicles, there's a whole press release pasted after the break. We're not going to argue with their choices, as both the Outback and the Highlander are fine vehicles, which would be suitable for a group of four people and their assorted belongings. Sure beats the old funny-smelling air-cooled VW van that had trouble keeping up with the slow-moving traffic that some of us can remember from our childhood.

Jaguar XF 3.0 V6

The 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine is as compatible with the Jaguar XF as Hillary Clinton is with Barack Obama. Hoping they'll work together for the common good is simply folly. The 238bhp V6 is underpowered and overstressed, and has the unhappy knack of making the car feel heavy and slovenly which, in both its diesel and V8 guises, it surely isn't. Choose wisely.

Jaguar XF 3.0 V6But like most drivers, my first XF experience is centred around the interior packaging, which has been touted (and in places lauded) as a modern, sassy lurch away from Jaguar's fusty wood veneers towards the alloy modernity so beloved of BMW and Audi customers.

Sorry, but I fear it is mostly trinketry. The automatically folding air vents, strange self-raising gear-selector knob and disappointingly flat mouldings of aluminium-coloured plastic do little to mask a fairly ordinary feeling inside. The XF is no more special than a Mondeo - maybe less so.

I recognise that the gaudy central control screen (backed up by manual buttons because it's too complicated to be used without crashing) and the lack of an ignition key (which means you need a big fat warning light to remind you the engine's running when you park up) are only as useless and annoying as those of the Jag's rivals.

But the optional 'blind spot monitor' - which is basically a form of parking radar offering randomly flashing orange lights in your wing mirrors - is my nomination for the most pointless gadget of the year. It is utterly without merit, plunging us yet further into a world where the driver doesn't have to bother to stay alert.

I really fancied the XF, but I think it's fair to say we've had a fairly disastrous first date. It was the automotive equivalent of not being asked in for coffee. I hope when we meet again she'll at least be wearing her best engine.

Kia Optima - Optimized for 2009

Let’s face it: some products are just, well, boring. And there’s been no better case in point than the Kia Optima, a sedan that could get lost in a crowd, even if it were on its own.

2009 Kia OptimaFor 2009, however, the Korean carmaker aims to gain a little more interest and attention for the sedan by giving it a little more expressive design. The mid-cycle update of the 2009 Kia Optima made its debut at this year’s New York Auto Show, and it shows the clear influence of the Kia Kue concept vehicle.

The update goes from head to tails, starting with a more distinctive grille that hints at the new face of the Kia brand. New headlights are more distinctive and should help get the 2009 Kia Optima more attention.

A chiseled rear spoiler lip offsets brand new taillights. For 2009, the Optima can be shod in standard 16-inch or optional 17-inch wheels and tires.

Inside, Optima gets an upgraded audio system, for 2009, including a new USB port, and standard Sirius Satellite Radio.

The car’s inline-4 engine gets a 13-horsepower bump, thanks to a new dual variable-valve timing system and variable intake. The V-6 also bulks up.

Ford Focus RS out in the open

Take a look at the best picture yet of Ford’s Focus RS! Just a few months after bosses gave the new hot hatch the green light (Issue 992), we caught this striking prototype testing in Germany.

Ford Focus RSWhile the car wears a previous-generation Focus ST bodykit, there’s a big giveaway that it’s no ordinary model – check out the giant scoop on the bonnet, which feeds the modified 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo engine with cool air.

Twin bonnet air vents, harking back to the Escort RS Cosworth, will replace the scoop on the production car. Blistered wheelarches, a rear wing and a low front splitter will also feature.

With a larger turbocharger, remapped electronics and a bigger intercooler, the 2.5-litre Focus ST-derived unit will produce around 280bhp, enabling the RS to sprint from 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 155mph.

It’s likely that Ford will equip the newcomer with a clever electronic differential, giving the front-wheel-drive layout excellent traction.

A six-speed manual box will be fitted, but Ford’s new twin-clutch VW DSG-style Powershift transmission could appear, too. The RS will go on sale next year, priced around £25,000. A concept will be revealed at the British Motor Show in London in July.

Bentley Boys S3 concept

When car designs begin to stagnate, designers go back in time for inspiration, in the case of Arturo Alonso from Bentley Boys USA, he has gone back to the sixties, which has led him to this: The Bentley Boys S3.

Bentley Boys S3 concept-1Bentley Boys S3 concept-2Bentley Boys S3 concept-3Given enough interest, only three cars are expected for production, each taking an enormous eight months to build. The target market is Dubai, New York and Moscow, where image is everything. As far as we can tell the cars will actually be built on original 1960s Bentley S3 bodies, which might explain the 8 month production schedule. Apart from that, there is not much actual Bentley in this car.

The same four-headlamp layout and vertical grille remain, while the original V8 engine has been replaced by a BMW-sourced 4.4-litre engine with around 220kW.The power is put to the ground via 20-inch forged wheels (even if you can only see 10 of that 20 inch) driven through a five-speed ZF automatic transmission.Little else is known about the specifications, except that it will have air conditioning, leather and suede trim and a stainless steel exhaust system.

It will cost the three owners $150,000 USD, which is not that much given the work and effort involved. But when you consider that you’re essentially buying a pimped up 1960s Bentley S3, there might be some hesitation - unless you’re a Russian billionaire.

2009 Cadillac XLR-V - Spy Shots

Spy photographers have snapped the 2009 Cadillac XLR-V out testing, and it's clear that Caddy's premium hard-top convertible is getting a refresh for next year. Though the front end is obscured by covering, spy photog Chris Doane claims the grille is still wire mesh, and we presume it will be tweaked to look more like the cow-catcher grille on the CTS sedan. Also new are the vertical fender vents ahead of the doors.

2009 Cadillac XLR-V-12009 Cadillac XLR-V-2What we're really interested in knowing, however, is what's under the car's hood. Having heard it for himself, Doane suggests that it could be the carryover 4.4L Northstar V8 that's supercharged to make 443 hp, but our money is on the next XLR-V using the same LSA motor getting dropped into the next CTS-V. Producing 550 hp and 550 pound-feet of torque, the supercharged 6.2L small-block V8 would be a big boon for the drop-top Caddy. Without it, the XLR-V will not be much competition for convertibles from Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Aston Martin V12 Vantage RS - Spy shots

This car has always been a collage of a sublime engine, and body-work of devine proportions - a car that was always going to be beautiful from the start of the production line. It would be near impossible to ruin a stylistic masterpiece like the Vantage, with its V12 6.0 engine, deriving from the DBS, although the RS name evokes a not-so-elegant and discreet competition.

Aston Martin V12 Vantage RS-1Aston Martin V12 Vantage RS-2Fortunately at Gaydon, they have decided to remain faithful to the initial spirit of the V12 RS concept, ensuring that fascination remains uncurtailed as does the British soul of the car. The V12 contained in the bonnet of the Road Sport has an output of about 550bhp, combined with a retractable rear spoiler - when you do a body-kit…

The British publication Car has another juicy rumour: Aston Martin could be working on a new V8, with 4 733cc, photographed on a Vantage doing the rounds of the Nurburgring. In short, beauty has been born.

Nissan Denki Cube

If you've designed a car that already looks like a nine volt battery, there's only one sensible course of action: run it on electricity.

That's the philosophy behind the Nissan Denki Cube, an all-electric concept unveiled this week at the New York show. Based on the shoebox-chic Cube, the Denki showcases Nissan's green intentions over the next few years... and the fruits of the design team's giant new Etch-a-Sketch board.

Nissan Denki Cube-1It's not quite a conventional Cube, though. There are just two rows of seats instead of three, and the metal roof has been replaced by a massive glass panel. We're not too keen on those 16-inch wheel covers, the lightning-bolt grille or the funny perforated bumper (anyone else reminded of a bourbon biscuit? No?) but hey - you hardly drive a bright white, square, electric car to stay anonymous.

Under the bonnet - well, under the floor and seats, actually - is a stack of laminated lithium ion batteries mated to an electric motor. Just like the Tesla Roadster, the Denki is all-electric and therefore theoretically zero-emissions.

Though the Denki remains a concept for now, Nissan reckons it can produce a hybrid by 2010, with an all-electric vehicle following soon after.

By which time, every vehicle on the road will be as square as the Cube. It'll be great. Multi-storey car parks will look like games of Tetris.

Virago Coupe

While the name Virago may remind some readers of a certain '80s-era Japanese V-Twin cruiser, it's also the name of a hopeful British sportscar. We're not able to glean too much real information from its (not-so-great) website, but here's what we know so far: a 3.0 liter Ford Duratec engine offers between 230 and 280 horsepower, which, because of the light weight of the Virago, provides enough power for a zero to 60 mph run in the low five-second range, and top speed is limited to 155 miles per hour.

Virago Coupe-1Virago Coupe-2Virago Coupe-3Perhaps we'll find out more about the Virago Coupe after it's shown at the Top Marque show in Monaco, which is running from April 24 to 27. Feel free to browse our gallery of high-resolution shots of the Virago Coupe until then.

2008 Chevy Cobalt SS

The turbocharged coupe carries a wallop with 260 hp, and all that power can be used to propel the Chevy Cobalt SS to 60 in 5.7 seconds or get you around the 'Ring in a very respectable 8:22. Those are very solid performance numbers, and with a starting price of $22,995, the Cobalt SS delivers a pretty strong value statement, as well.

2008 Chevy Cobalt SS-12008 Chevy Cobalt SS-22008 Chevy Cobalt SS-3Besides a toned-down rear spoiler and an improved 2.0L turbocharged powerplant, standard features include air conditioning, stability control, OnStar and XM Satellite Radio. If you're into Cobalt luxury, you can add a sunroof, high-wing rear spoiler, audio system, and limited-slip differential and still keep the price under $26k. We're looking forward to seeing for ourselves if the Cobalt SS is worthy of the Super Sport name, but at $22,995 we can already say the price of entry is competitive.

2004 Buick Velite Concept

(from General Motors Press Release) BUICK’S POPULAR VELITE CONCEPT PAVED THE WAY FOR CURRENT PRODUCT DESIGN

NEW YORK – “Restrained extravagance” were the words that described the landmark Buick Velite concept nearly four years ago and they still apply today. With a sweeping, stylized exterior and a globally influenced passenger compartment, the Velite – a four-seat convertible – continues to characterize Buick vehicles of today.

2004 Buick Velite Concept-12004 Buick Velite Concept-2The Velite’s design influence can be seen in current production vehicles in North America, including the new Enclave, Lucerne and LaCrosse. Cues such as the vertical waterfall grille, portholes, subtle use of chrome and other rich materials continue to influence Buick’s current product renaissance and growth into a premium, international brand.

Named for an elite class of quick-moving soldiers in Napoleon’s army, the Velite was designed at GM’s Advanced Studio in Warren, Mich., and assembled at renowned coachbuilder Stile Bertone’s studio in Italy. It has athletic proportions and an aggressive stance that emphasize a bold, contemporary design, with identifiable heritage cues worn with an international flair and understated elegance.

Romantic environment
Contemporary design also is reflected in the Velite’s passenger compartment, which uses sumptuous materials and the warm glow of indirect lighting to harmonize with the vehicle’s exterior design voice. It’s a tangible expression of a jazz lounge atmosphere, including an inviting rear seat that wraps around the interior like a comfortable lounge loveseat. Rear HVAC controls allow rear-seat passengers to adjust the climate to suit their moods.

Power to move the Velite comes from Buick’s experimental, 3.6L DOHC, twin-turbocharged and intercooled global V-6 engine. The engine features fuel-saving variable valve timing technology, which is available on some of GM’s four-, five-, six- and eight-cylinder engines. Through the use of variable engine valve timing, valve lift and duration is continuously varied to improve fuel economy, horsepower and torque, while reducing emissions.

The V-6 is backed by a Hydra-Matic 6L80-E six-speed, rear-wheel-drive automatic transmission equipped with manual tap-shift gear selection. A pair of large, oval exhaust outlets provides an aural reminder that performance is very much a part of the vehicle’s character.

Saleen S5S Raptor - Mighty supercar makes New York debut

The American tuning firm Saleen has unveiled a new supercar, aimed at the likes of the Porsche 911 and Audi R8.

Inspired by the $1 million S7 endurance racer, this is the Saleen S5S Raptor - and it promises to put the company firmly on the performance car map. The spectacular looking machine is powered by a mid-mounted, 5.0-litre V8, tuned to run on E85 bioethanol fuel.

Saleen S5S Raptor-1Saleen S5S Raptor-2Unveiled at the 2008 New York Motor Show, the car also gets a supercharger to lift power to an impressive 650bhp. Performance is channelled to the road via the rear wheels, through a six speed manual gearbox, while the car also gets huge 20-inch wheels and high performance brakes with powerful six pot callipers.

Based on a weight saving aluminium spaceframe chassis - similar in concept to the one that underpins the Lotus Elise - the strict two seater promises a 0-60mph sprint of only 3.2-seconds and a top speed of 202mph.

Prices are yet to be announced, but its thought the car will sell for around £100,000 when it goes on sale early next year.

2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe

(from General Motors Press Release) PONTIAC UNVEILS 2009 SOLSTICE COUPE: Hardtop Extends Appeal of Classic Design

NEW YORK – Drawing inspiration from classic sports cars, the 2009 Pontiac Solstice coupe was created for drivers who appreciate both dramatic styling and balanced performance. Unveiled at the New York Auto Show as a GXP model, the Solstice coupe builds on the success of the convertible model while offering a greater range of all-season driving opportunities.

2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe-12009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe-2For drivers still wanting an open-air experience, the coupe also features a removable roof panel, fully opening the cockpit to all of the sensations of the road.

“Today’s Solstice is the top-selling roadster in the U.S., and we believe this new model has even broader appeal,” said Jim Bunnell, Buick-Pontiac-GMC general manager. “The coupe has all the design cues and pleasing performance of the original roadster, and is an all-season alternative for people who enjoy open-air driving.”

Engineering the design
Despite its dramatic new look, engineers made only minor structural changes to create the Solstice coupe. The rear fenders and rear fascia are the same as those on the convertible. New taillight assemblies flow more smoothly into the tapered roofline.

“The Solstice coupe represents a major collaboration of design and engineering,” said Bruce Kosbab, chief engineer. “The sleek lines of the new roof give the car a fresh appearance, yet only minimal changes were made to the body structure – it’s a great example of building on an already solid foundation.”

Powertrain and suspension
Because the change to a coupe body style resulted in only a slight increase in curb weight, no drivetrain or suspension changes were necessary to shift from the convertible body structure. Initial tests have shown that the Solstice coupe will deliver ride and handling, acceleration, braking and fuel economy comparable to the convertible model.

The coupe is powered by a standard 2.4L Ecotec four-cylinder engine that generates 173 horsepower (129 kW), while the GXP version is equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged Ecotec engine with 260 horsepower (194 kW).

(from ART Press Release) G-tuned the A.R.T. way: Complete tuning suite for Mercedes G-Model

• Extensive exterior tuning suite with fender flares
• Various performance boosts for gasoline and diesel engines
• Top performance: 427 kW (580 bhp), 790 Nm
• monoART1 rims in 10x22 inch
• Comprehensive interior tuning suite with optional extras
• Special requests catered to

2008 ART Mercedes-Benz 463 G-Class-12008 ART Mercedes-Benz 463 G-Class-2For those drivers who cannot get used to the latest GL from Mercedes, it is possible to choose the predecessor, which has been constantly refined over the years from the product range of this Stuttgart-based automaker. For the all-terrain vehicle that is anything but obsolete, A.R.T. is offering a complete tuning suite that goes by the name of “PROGRAM463”. Everything from the exterior to the interior thru to the engine can be customized.

Absolute power!
A.R.T. boosts the performance of diesel and gasoline engines significantly. Leading the way is the A.R.T. performance kit “A55K” for the G 55 K. After optimizing the supercharger ratio and the engine management system, the engine’s output goes up from 350 kW (476 bhp) to an impressive 427 kW (580 bhp). The torque increases from 700 to 790 Nm. At the same time, A.R.T. also overrides the Vmax limit. As regards the gasoline engines, A.R.T. also takes account of the G 55 (performance boost by means of a supercharger to 324 kW/ 440 bhp and 597 Nm) and G 500 (also with a supercharger: 296 kW / 402 bhp; 683 Nm).

In terms of the diesels, thanks to A.R.T. DieselPower, the power classes 215 kW / 293 bhp (G 400 CDI, 624 Nm), 192 kW / 261 bhp (G 320 CDI, 600 Nm) and 141 kW / 192 bhp (G 270 CDI, 468 Nm) are possible.

The exhilarating sound is produced by the A.R.T. sports exhaust system with four 80 mm diameter tailpipes, which protrude at an angle beneath the running boards. For vehicles up to model year 11/2000, this task is undertaken by a system with two tailpipes.

Scion Hako Coupe concept

Toyota’s niche U.S. manufacturer, Scion, has come out with what can potentially be called, the world’s ugliest - ever- concept car. Say hello to the Scion Hako Coupe concept. Taking its inspiration from the Scion xB, which is a bad place to start, the Hako Coupe is supposedly a play on the growing interest in vintage American styles in Japan. Scion has put Japanese design into American vintage style and, well, it has created a monster.

Scion Hako Coupe concept-1Scion Hako Coupe concept-2The high roof is connected to a flat windscreen, which according to the company is “ready to attack the road”, what that actually means is beyond us. Perhaps after the attack the car might look better? Then there is the trapezoidal LED headlights and taillights which look like they were designed by a mad man. At least we like the deep 18-inch wheels. We also like the massive panoramic glass roof that lights up the interior with natural light. The rest of the interior is an attempt to blend orange and black in every way imaginable.

The gear shifter is a joytstick and there is a big engine start button on the steering wheel. The entertainment system is out of pimp-my-ride with two dash-mounted video screens with Bluetooth connectivity to upload music and videos.

But it gets better, there is a monitor on each door which, wait for it, display images from cameras set below the A-pillar. After the car has stopped, the images can be downloaded to a PC to form a pictorial album of the journey!

Thankfully, Scion has no plans to turn this concept into a production model.

Suzuki Kizashi 3 - Suzuki family car debuts in New York

It’s third time lucky for Suzuki! Take a look at the stunning Kizashi 3 concept, which has made its debut at the New York Motor Show. After two previous show cars it provides the best view yet of how the firm’s all-new Ford Mondeo challenger will look.

Suzuki Kizashi 3 Kizashi means prelude in Japanese and this four-wheel drive show car bodes well for the future production model, which has been given the green light by company bosses. Its sleek lines, smooth bodysides and flush fitting light clusters will bring Suzuki’s small car excellence to a much wider audience for the first time.

Power comes from a 295bhp 3.6-litre V6 engine, which is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. The sporty self-shifter also features steering wheel mounted paddles for manual shifts, while an all-wheel drive chassis promises to deliver incredible roadholding.

The first Kizashi concept debuted at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show and was followed by a second show car in Tokyo later in the year. The production version will hit dealers in 2010 and there’s good news for UK motorists because the firm is planning to develop an economical 2.0-litre diesel engine.

Citroen C4 Picasso Lounge

Citroen really has got junior MPVs down to a fine art. The C4 Picasso represents attractive and innovative family transport, and it’s great value, too.

But the French firm believes there is room for a more exclusive variant – one that blends all the style with greater luxury. Enter the new range-topping C4 Picasso Lounge.

Citroen C4 Picasso Lounge-1Citroen C4 Picasso Lounge-2Designed solely for sale in the UK market, the Lounge is only available with the 2.0-litre HDi diesel engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. It adds £1,900 to the price of the Exclusive model on which it’s based – which means the newcomer weighs in at a rather hefty £23,995.

Climb inside, and it’s immediately obvious where the money is spent. The standard five-seat Picasso interior has been replaced by four individual leather-trimmed chairs, each featuring adjustable head and armrests.

The driving position is very upright, so some owners may struggle to get comfortable. Selecting Drive using the slender column-mounted stick is simple, but the electronic handbrake takes a frustrating 10 seconds to disengage.

Once up and running, the Picasso is slow to convert the engine’s power into forward motion, leading to jerky acceleration from a standstill.

But overall, the driving experience is compromised for a car that’s intended to pamper its four occupants. So while the Lounge is an intriguing concept, Citroen top brass might find that – as with the Avantime from rival Renault – buyers aren’t particularly drawn towards a model with the size but not the practicality of an MPV.

Saleen S5S Raptor - New York 2008

Though Saleen won't be officially unveiling its new supercar, the S5S Raptor, on stage until tomorrow, we've got pics and details for you now. Though slated to slot below the hardcore S7 in Saleen's lineup, the S5S Raptor looks no less the part of a high-powered high-performance sports car. It's powered by a supercharged 5.0L engine mounted amidships producing around 650 horsepower and 630 lb-ft. of churn on a steady diet of E85 ethanol.

Saleen S5S RaptorSaleen S5S Raptor-2Developed as a collaboration between Saleen and specialty builder ASC -- both of which are owned by the same private equity firm -- the car is plenty of tech and a bit of throwback. The aluminum chassis 2-seater can get from 0-60 in a supercar-standard 3.2 seconds. When it's time to stop, six-pot calipers hidden by 20-inch wheels clamp down on 15-inch rotors up front. The retro bit: a six-speed manual gearbox. A paddle-shifting sequential is also in the works and may be ready when the car goes into production in 2010. Compared to the S7, the S5S is another relative domestic bargain at only $185,000.

Ford transit Connect Taxi Concept - New York 2008

Where better than New York for Ford to show off a taxi cab? And what better platform than the company's new Transit Connect van? Ford's Mark Fields and designer J. Mays were on hand for the unveiling of the Transit Connect Taxi Concept, and both were somehow amazed at the applause the concept generated. Seeing as how there were only a handful of us there and that the rest of the crowd consisted of Ford employees, we find it hard to believe there wouldn't be applause aplenty. Seriously though, this is one fun cab.

Ford transit Connect Taxi Concept-1Ford transit Connect Taxi Concept-2After spending some time in the regular fleet of bumblebee-colored Crown Vics this past week, we can attest that the Transit Connect Taxi has a lot of things that make it a natural improvement over current standard taxis. Our favorite was the panoramic roof that allows passengers to take in tall buildings with a single glance, but we also liked the flexible seating and cargo configurations, as well as the funky interactive infotainment system for the back seat. Although it looks a bit large in photos, the Transit Connect Taxi Concept actually has a small footprint vehicle and seems like it could go four-wide where the Vics can only manage three abreast.

2009 HONDA FIT SPORT

Honda pulled the sheets off its new 2009 Fit hatchback at the New York auto show today, just two model years after the city-sipping hatchback first joined the Japanese automaker’s lineup.

2009 HONDA FIT SPORT-12009 HONDA FIT SPORT-22009 HONDA FIT SPORT-3What left us a little verklempt was the lack of complete powertrain info on the new vehicle, which doesn’t actually go on sale until the fall. Honda’s press release says the Fit will be powered by a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder with either a five-speed manual gearbox or a new five-speed automatic with paddle shifters (on the Sport model shown here). No word on fuel economy or total power output just yet.

Honda also promises better standard equipment on the new version, including an improved “Magic Seat” that swings into its folding position in one motion; a hidden storage bin in the cargo area; better steering and handling thanks to a better body structure; and on Sport models, an available navigation system with voice recognition. The Sport version also gets a USB audio interface that words with iPods and other MP3 players.

Stability control, side and curtain airbags will also be standard on the new Fit.

Hyundai i10

Driving
Light controls ensure the Hyundai is extremely straightforward to drive. With a tight turning circle and excellent visibility, it has all the key attributes a great city car requires. The 1.1-litre engine delivers keen throttle response, making sure the i10 is nippy through traffic. Combine this with responsive steering, progressive brakes and a tidy gearshift, and the Hyundai is fun and easy to drive. Even so, it’s worth pointing out the engine does get a little coarse at higher revs, and the ride tends to be on the firm side. However, the stiff suspension does mean the i10 is stable at motorway speeds.

Hyundai i10Hyundai i10-2Hyundai i10-3Marketplace
The i10 replaces Hyundai’s previous city five-door, the Amica. Built in India, links to the old car are clear, particularly in the unattractive side profile. However, the tidy nose and rear are attractive and modern, similar to the bigger i30. Powered by a single 1.1-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, Hyundai’s baby comes in three trim lines – Classic, Style and Comfort. Rivals come far and wide, and include the Fiat Panda, Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107, Citroen C1, Volkswagen Fox and Kia Picanto.

Owning
The dashboard design is modern, while the materials used are impressive for a car in this price range. The high-mounted stereo is excellent, with big buttons and a CD player, as well as compatibility with MP3 players. What’s more, the thin-rimmed steering wheel adjusts for height, and the gearlever is perfectly placed on the dashboard. There’s a decent amount of space, with enough legroom in the rear for adults to sit comfortably. Unlike rivals, the i10’s back seats split and fold, while you get three rear belts and a full complement of headrests. Quoted economy of 56mpg is impressive and the low list prices include very good levels of equipment, plus Hyundai’s five-year warranty.

Ferrari Dino Mules Spied

Ferrari officials confirmed recently that a new sportscar will be shown at the Paris auto show this fall. And now, spies have captured more photos of the prototypes of the new Ferrari during testing.

Ferrari DinoIt can be taken for granted that the new model will be the long-rumored small Ferrari dubbed “Dino” by the automotive press. Our photos show two different prototypes of the upcoming car, caught just two days ago on Ferrari’s test track at Fiorino. While one of the prototypes is heavily disguised from front to rear end, the second one at least gives a glimpse of the new model’s front end. We’ve also sourced two illustrations to capture an artist’s interpretation of the vehicles shown in these photos.

The front-engined small sports car might not be called Dino, but possibly GT420 or GT470. Dino was the name applied to a smaller sportscar engineered by Ferrari in the 1960s, one named for a son of founder Enzo Ferrari.

The new “baby” Ferrari will be based on a shortened platform spun from the Maserati GranTurismo. Powered by the family V-8 also found in the Maserati, the Ferrari will sport a 4.7-liter version. The new Ferrari will be positioned between the F430 and the Maserati GT.

Vauxhall Corsa VXR 888

It’s tough for car makers to launch a performance car brand. If you don’t believe us, just ask Vauxhall. While the firm might not admit it, the introduction of its VXR badge has been anything but plain sailing.

Badges such as Volkswagen’s GTI, Ford’s RS and ST and even Subaru’s STI still have greater reach. But hats off to Vauxhall, because the firm has vowed it’s not going to give up the battle just yet. And the Corsa VXR 888 is the next step as it attempts to establish itself as a major force.

Vauxhall Corsa VXR 888Vauxhall Corsa VXR 888-2Developed purely to help bolster the credibility of the brand, the model’s specification reads like a boy racer’s Christmas wish list. With a tuned engine pumping out an astonishing 225bhp, the Corsa is easily the most powerful model available in the class.

And this is no wolf in sheep’s clothing. Vauxhall hasn’t missed a single opportunity to trumpet its supermini’s giant-killing pace. There are black alloy wheels wrapped in low-profile tyres with crazy tread patterns. Blue brake calipers grip grooved brake discs, while further up, the bodywork is adorned with wings and air vents.

A new exhaust system, designed by specialist firm Remus, is certainly louder than standard, but at low revs its note is menacing, rather than unpleasantly noisy. Head out on to the road, and the newcomer lives up to its billing as one of the most extreme road cars Vauxhall has built.

Its looks certainly turn heads, but it’s that exhaust note that really grabs people’s attention. From 4,000rpm, its purposeful growl turns into a roar, punctuated only by a rally car-style crackle on gearchanges. Power delivery is best described as sudden. Floor the throttle, and in truth not much happens, but once the turbo picks up, lag gives way to an avalanche of torque, all of which seems to arrive at around 3,000rpm.

There’s no doubt that the VXR 888 serves up considerable thrills on the road, but its brash looks might be too much for some tastes. And while its driving experience is rewarding, it doesn’t quite have the measure of the excellent Ford Fiesta ST185.

Infiniti’s 4dr GT-R on way

NEW-to-the-UK Infiniti is planning a performance saloon based on the GT-R supercar from parent firm Nissan. And it looks set to be named the R50.

The model has been championed by enthusiasts at Infiniti’s new European division, who had hoped that the GT-R would wear the luxury badge.

Infiniti’s 4dr GT-RInfiniti’s 4dr GT-R-2A source told us, “Launching new cars these days is all about recouping investment costs. Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn wouldn’t have approved the GT-R if its hi-tech chassis and transmission were not going to be used in some way in other models – including products from Infiniti and [sister firm] Renault. It’s the only way of making it pay. So building a performance Infi-niti saloon is perfect business sense.”

Our spies have revealed that the newcomer will be underpinned by a stretched version of the GT-R platform. Engineers currently have a choice of two powerplants. Most obvious is the GT-R’s 473bhp twin-turbo 3.8-litre V6 – although they may be forced to use the 5.0-litre V8 unit recently unveiled in Infiniti’s all-new FX50 SUV. That’s because Nissan produces the GT-R’s engine by hand – output is only 50 a day, which would be nowhere near enough to supply Infiniti, too.

Plans for new models don’t stop there, however. Another source says Nissan hopes to build a US-market, GT-R-based SUV – a car even bigger and bolder than the 385bhp FX50. It will be aimed squarely at the Range Rover’s replacement, due in 2010.

Citroen C1 Code

Only a few months after its launch in the UK, the Fiat 500’s cute, retro looks and effortless class have forced other brands to raise their game.

And that’s what Citroen has done with the Code, the latest evolution of its capable C1 city car. The idea is simple – create the most luxurious C1 to date. But is it a classic case of over-egging the pudding? Using the range-topping Rhythm trim as a starting point, Code spec piles on the options, including 14-inch alloy wheels and black metallic paint.

Citroen C1 CodeOn the road, in common with other versions that we have tested, the new C1 provides a frantic and fun driving experience. Its peppy 1.0-litre engine occasionally lacks power, but makes up for any shortfall by offering plenty of enthusiasm.

With the effortlessly light steering and a raspy exhaust note, the C1 is entertaining. In corners, there’s no sliding around in the seats, although that has more to do with the Alcantara providing some resistance than any sign of bolstering. There’s also a feeling of being connected to the road surface that you simply don’t get in a larger car.

In terms of practicality, you have to choose whether you want to carry four occupants without much of a boot, or fold the rear seats down to create a reasonable loading space, but have room for only two. Either way, the C1 is impressively economical, returning 60mpg on the combined cycle and emitting only 109g/km of CO2.

So does the C1 Code work as a package? Well, while you can currently snap one up for £7,945 with some cashback offers, the five-door we drove costs £8,795. And that’s the same as a mid-spec Fiat Panda 1.2 – which provides a big step up in comfort and space.

2009 Nissan Maxima

After waiting patiently for the press conferences to start tomorrow, we’re running with these Maxima pics just like the other blogs you might read, because information just wants to be free.

2009 Nissan Maxima2009 Nissan Maxima-2There still aren’t any firm details, though we don’t expect any major surprises like V-8 power, or even a small personal assistant who lives in the trunk and takes Sonic orders. But there may be bigger things in the Maxima’s future: the seventh-generation Maxima might eventually be fitted with a Renault-Nissan diesel powerplant in time for the 2011 model year. In addition to the diesel motor, a hybrid version is expected for the 2010 model year.

The Maxima has had an interesting place in the Nissan lineup over the years. Starting as its upscale sedan atop the Stanza and Altima, the Maxima was transferred to the Altima platform for 2004, after the Altima had grown considerably larger. Now it’s largely an upscale Altima with a continuously variable transmission and a more stylish look. We’ll be looking closely to see if Nissan deviates from that formula as they unveil this new car–and to see if it stays true to its old “four-door sportscar” roots.

Bugatti Veyron Review

After twenty-three gruelling hours in a seriously packed economy class cabin, we arrived in Frankfurt via Abu Dhabi, ready for what we thought was a well earned luxury business class flight to Strasbourg in France.

Turns out, our double degree IT guru and fellow motoring journalist Alborz, (who said his friend at flight centre had it sorted), had completely misread the ticket. Bus – actually meant BUS – the road going version. All sorted?

Bugatti Veyron-1Bugatti Veyron-2Bugatti Veyron-3By some stroke of luck though, the bus company had grossly overbooked both Strasbourg bound buses, and Bruno, the guy at the Lufthansa desk, worked some magic and presto, we had a Ford Mondeo TDCi for twenty-four hours, at no cost. Gold, we thought.

The diesel powered Mondeo is no slouch, within moments we are sitting on a comfortable 200km/h as we head towards Molsheim, the home of Bugatti.

It couldn’t have been more than twenty minutes into the trip and bugger, something felt badly out of whack with the front end. What we found, was a dirty great big hole in the middle of the right front tyre tread, which meant we weren’t going anywhere fast. That is, until we got the spare on and rebooted to that blissful 200km/h.

Rather than push on at an impossible 80km/h (its downright dangerous on the Autobahns) we stopped in at Hertz in Heidelberg and switched over to a little Peugeot 307 1.6L diesel powered wagon, which believe it or not, was good for a steady 190km/h and that’s hauling the four of us, with a stack of luggage and camera equipment!

At a staggering $2.7 million Australian dollars each, the Veyron is the definition of Bespoke. Hand made over 300 hours, in a stunning glass building called the Atelier, by twenty specialists using Bugatti designed components if you will. And it shows.

Volvo C30 T5 Version 2.0

The hatches don't sell in the U.S., so it's surprising to see a new crop of two-box premium cars going on sale. MINI started it with its R53 Coopers; retro flash met modern dash and it sold successfully enough to warrant an upgrade to the R56. Volvo's got the same lust for entry-level customers to its premium wares, so on the scene rolls the C30.

Volvo C30 T5 Version 2.0Volvo C30 T5 Version 2.0-2Volvo C30 T5 Version 2.0-3Based off the S40, the C30 reaches back over three generations of boxy-but-good styling to a time when Swedish cars wearing the alchemist's symbol for iron had curves and a shooting brake profile. Hatch/wagon/brake/estate - call it what you will, Volvo's hoping it can call the C30 a success.

Spada Codatronca to bow in Monaco next month

The sheer outrageousness of the Spada Codatroca's design is rivaled only by the notion that it is actually being built, but in both cases seeing is believing. The wildly shark-styled Vette-based sportscar is scheduled to be officially unveiled in limited-production guise at the upcoming Top Marques show in Monaco (where else?) on April 24.

Spada CodatroncaSpada Codatronca-2You may recall that the Codatronca packs a supercharged LS7 V8 into its expressly unique bodywork and promises a sprint to sixty in 3.2 seconds. That's in the base 600-hp TS version, which will be shown in Monte Carlo prior to the more extreme track-oriented 700-hp TSV model said to hit sixty in a scant 2.7.

To produce the Codatronca for an assuredly wealthy few customers, SpadaConcept – led by former Zagato designer Ercole Spada and his son Paulo – set up SpadaVettureSport in collaboration with fellow Italian coachbuilder Aznom and a slew of other partners including Pirelli, OZ Racing, Sparco, prototype firm FS Rivoli and racing outfit Italtecnica.

Remote-Controlled HUMMER H3

When I was a yungin', there was no better way to approximate the thrill of actually driving a car than terrorizing my backyard with a Tamiya Blackfoot. The Blackfoot was a 1:10 scale Ford F-150 monster truck with four independent shocks, two-wheel drive and a plastic flareside body. Fast forward to 2008, and it's not uncommon to see Adam and Jamie from Mythbusters piloting full-size rocket cars from a helicopter using an R/C controller similar to the one I used back in the day.

Remote-Controlled HUMMER H3Perhaps that's why the sight of a full-size, right-hand-drive, radio-controlled HUMMER H3 doesn't shock us much, but we still have to give mad props to engineer Dr. James Brighton from Cranfield University for creating an R/C car that rivals my Blackfoot. GM says the remote-controlled HUMMER can climb a 407mm vertical wall, traverse a 40% side slope and run through 610mm of water. Yeah, but can it jump two tree branches? I thought not. Blackfoot FTW.

Nissan GT-R reign begins at Super GT

So it begins. The Nissan GT-R has taken out first and second place in its Super GT debut in Japan in front of more than 32,000 spectators.

Nissan GT-ROf the five GT-R derivatives competing in the Super GT opening race at Suzuka, three dominated the field in qualifying for a clean first, second and third starting position on the grid.

The race was eventually won by the number 23 XANAVI NISMO GT-R driven by Satoshi Motoyama and Benoit Treluyer, whilst Michael Krumm and Masataka Yanagida brought the MOTUL AUTECH GT-R home in the 2nd place.

The Nissan duo crossed the line less than a second apart after a grueling 52 laps, with the PETRONAS TOM’S Lexus SC 430 entry more than 25 seconds behind in third place.

Unfortunately for the CALSONIC GT-R which started from third on the grid, it was hit from behind on the opening lap and forced out of the race.

Fiat's got wood

Wood has been largely superseded in recent years as a car-building material by, well, stuff that doesn't catch fire. Or snap. Or splinter. Mostly, anyhow.

But that hasn't stopped Italian coachbuilder Castagna putting together the WoodyWagon (honest), a stretched Fiat 500 that might just give a few clues to the styling of the official estate Cinq, set to arrive later this year.

FiatFiat-2We can't imagine it'll get the WoodyWagon's old-school grain panelling, but beneath that B&Q-chic exterior lurks a stretched chassis with a bigger boot and more upright tailgate - all of which seems to fit rather nicely with the 500s cheery, curvy lines.
Castagna's engine modifications sound tasty, too. The 500's 1.4-litre 100bhp unit has been fitted with a supercharger, boosting power to 155mph and allowing the 500 to hit 60mph in under eight seconds. If you fancy an Abarth but suffer from an irrational phobia of scorpion decals, you know where to go.

Castagna has also created a wood-panelled Mini Clubman, named the Mini Woody Passion Kit. It sounds like a pocket-sized sex aid and looks even less appealing. Oh dear.

2008 IMSA Lamborghini Murcielago GTR

(from IMSA Press Release) World exclusive: The brand new imsa technical and aerodynamic-enhancement program for the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640.

Imsa, the world-acclaimed, German High-Tech Engineering specialist, exclusively presents, after successfully introducing the stunning imsa GTV Supercar based on all versions of the Lamborghini Gallardo, its new technology and design-enhancement program for Lamborghini’s current top-of-the-range supercar, the Murcielago LP640.

2008 IMSA Lamborghini Murcielago GTR2008 IMSA Lamborghini Murcielago GTR-2Special emphasis must be laid on the technology- and design-package made from Autoklav moulded carbon fibre. Technology which is normally only being used in Formula 1 and other Top-motorsports Series. Imsa’s main target was, for all owners of the Lamborghini top-of-the-range-model, to offer an exclusive product line, transforming the Murcielago both technically and optically into a unique work of art, with the aim of significantly enhancing the exclusivity of Lamborghini’s Top-model.

The strikingly aggressive and aerodynamically highly effective front apron (spoiler) perfectly aligned to the wheel arches (widened 35mm on each side), directly becomes apparent. On the upper side of the wheel arches, imsa CFK air ducts have been integrated, resulting in a significant reduction of the drag effect caused by non-aerodynamic airflow at higher and highest velocity. The imsa side-skirts on the underside guarantee the optimum airflow to the imsa diffuser, which has been developed for an aerodynamically perfect interaction with the imsa rear spoiler. Imsa herewith achieved to considerably lower the downforce at higher and highest speeds. The benefits for the driver are a significant enhancement of driving stability, safety and enjoyment.

All parts of the imsa-aerodynamic-enhancement program are either available in carbon-onsight or can be painted in any colour of choice. The imsa aerodynamic-enhancement-program is available from November 2007 on and will soon be available for the “standard” Murcielago as well. The imsa technical enhancement program also includes – exactly as for the imsa GTV Supercar based on the Lamborghini Gallardo – exclusive imsa multi-part sports wheels with central locking system, various sports chassis with individual settings, and, last but not least, various imsa engine modifications and own engines. At imsa, each customer is fully involved in the creation of his personal, unique imsa-Megacar handcrafted according to highest German standards of quality and precision. Additionally, personalised tailor-made interiors inclusive of various multi-media applications are also being fitted on special request.

2008 Pontiac G8 GXP - New York '08 Preview

The Northeast is the Pontiac division's largest market, and the brand -- which has played the stepchild in recent years, banished to the outer limits of exhibition halls -- is finally getting its own coming out party in New York next week. The resurgent Performance Division will flex its muscles at the Javits Center. Joining the 2010 G8 sport truck (and maybe another newcomer sporting the Arrowhead badge) is the highly-anticipated Pontiac G8 GXP.

2008 Pontiac G8 GXPThe new Poncho flagship wears subtle visual tweaks including updated front and rear fascias plus the same 19" HSV wheels that were shown on the G8 concept. More importantly, the GXP packs GM's 6.2L LS3 V8 underhood. In this application (it's also in the Vette, where it makes even more power), the small-block punches out 402 horses and 400 lb-ft of torque rearward via a Tremec 6-speed manual gearbox or a HydraMatic 6L80 auto.

A fully-adjustable suspension helps keep the muscle sedan planted to the tarmac, and stopping power comes from the gang at Brembo. Look for an upgraded interior with glitzier trim and well-bolstered leather sport seats. A Pontiac stand littered with V8s? It's sure been a while. Welcome back to the party, guys. Let the wanton tire destruction begin!

2010 Pontiac sports truck - New York '08 Preview

After more than two decades, the ghost of the El Camino has finally risen from the grave, at least for U.S. drivers. It never actually went away in Australia. Now that the Pontiac G8 has ushered in a new era of affordable rear-wheel-drive performance at General Motors, the car-based pickup truck, or Ute as they are called Down Under, is coming back. Rumors have been flying for months about a G8 Ute and GM even showed the GMC Denali XT concept at the Chicago Auto Show last month – a four-door ute with a two-mode hybrid power-train that may or may not see production.

Pontiac G8 Sport TruckPontiac G8 Sport Truck-2What we will definitely see in showrooms late next year is the Pontiac G8 Sport Truck. The G8 Ute gets a 6-foot 2-inch long cargo bed behind its two-passenger cab. Compared to the sedan, the pickup has a four-inch longer wheelbase plus two more inches hanging behind the rear axle. The box that's unified with the passenger compartment comes with a color matched soft tonneau cover to enclose the 42.7 cubic feet contained within the composite bed. That's nearly double the volume of the late and unlamented Chevy SSR. The G8 can haul almost 1,100 lbs and tow 3,500 lbs, that latter figure also 1,000 lbs more than the SSR.

Porsche Traveller Concept slaps Stuttgart in the face

There's probably a few clunkers in DaVinci's sketchbook, too. Looking more gnarled than Van Gogh's Potato Eaters hand studies, Ivan Volkov's Porsche Traveller concept picks up design ideas from the Matchbox Fandango, though it doesn't look like the spare wheel on the Traveller incorporates Rolamatic action.

Porsche Traveller ConceptRather than heap massive derision on Volkov's renderings, it would be interesting to get a deeper explanation of the design goals and features incorporated in this car. The SUV/CUV appears to have a pickup-like division between the front and rear body sections, and one thing's for sure, it's got absolutely no chance of seeing production without much further refinement. We'll grant that the Cayenne isn't the most classically handsome conveyance to roll out of Zuffenhausen, but Volkov's Traveller is exponentially more polarizing.

Diesel Subaru at 200 hp - New version

Subaru has in store a nasty version of the Impreza, equipped with a diesel engine capable of 200 hp output, which is 50 more than the more normal boxer presented recently.

Diesel Subaru-1Diesel Subaru-2Prodrive of Banbury is behind the development, according to reports from Channel4Car. The Japanese hatchback has a strong point in its sporty attributes (225 km/hr, 0-60 mph in less than seven seconds), with performance and consumption comparable to the best common rail examples currently available.

The name will probably remain as RS so as not to infringe on the WRX STI range. Unfortunately we will have to wait until next year for sales. Until 2009, as regards a diesel, we will have to satisfy ourselves with the powerstep at 150 hp.

Husmen’s 699 GTO to Hit Production You Decide

After drawing widespread attention for his Ferrari-inspired design for a two-seater fastback coupe, IED Transportation Design student Emre Husmen received an unusual request from an unnamed Italian car company; they wanted to make Husmen’s car. Whether or not the car will actually be produced depends upon the public’s reaction to the design. So, if you like the design and want to see the car produced, make it known by leaving a comment.

Husmen’s 699 GTO-1Husmen’s 699 GTO-2According to Husmen, technical specifications on his 699 GTO “are pretty much defined. Platform and dimensions are similar to (Ferrari’s) 599’s, but the car will be at least 200 kg lighter thanks to its 2-seater carbon fiber monocoque body and the twin-supercharged V8 engine that runs on biofuel. It will also have hydraulic lifting system and a rear view camera (behind the antenna).”

The name, however, will likely change, as will any design aspects that closely resemble Ferrari’s. We wish this guy the best of luck.

Audi Q5 getting 7-speed DSG

The Audi Q5 will reportedly make its official debut at the Bejing Motor Show next month and with Porsche's increased stake in the Volkswagen group – going from 31-percent to more than 50-percent – that means that VAG and Porsche might begin to finally play nice again with platform sharing.

Audi Q5 getting 7-speed DSGAudi Q5 getting 7-speed DSG-2Initially, the new Q5 was supposed to underpin Porsche's own mini 'ute, but rumors suggested that Audi's board nixed the idea for fear that a Porsche model sharing the same platform could steal sales from the new CUV. That's about to change as Porsche gets a few seats on VAG's board, and according to Autoweek, development of the vehicle-formerly-known as the Roxster is back in full swing.

While there's no new information about the Porsche, Audi's Q5 will be revealed packing the new seven-speed dual-clutch S-tronic gearbox mated to a longitudinal engine. The real benefit of the new DL500 transmission is that it can handle torque output up to 405 lb.-ft. and engine revs of 8,500 rpm. The new tranny will disseminate throughout the rest of the Audi lineup in coming years, first in Quattro models, including the new A4, and then on down to the automaker's front-wheel-drive models.

Choosing your track day performance car has just become a lot more exciting with the introduction of the entry level 2-Eleven and extensive range of Lotus Sport performance options.

2008 Lotus Entry Level 2-Eleven-12008 Lotus Entry Level 2-Eleven-22008 Lotus Entry Level 2-Eleven-3The latest Lotus 2-Eleven, bristling with Lotus Sport options and wearing a dramatic carbon fibre body was exhibited at the 78th annual Geneva International Motor show. This car has been specified with, amongst other options, the 255 PS (252 bhp, 188 kw) power upgrade, carbon fibre tonneau cover, four piston front brakes, “Aero Pack” and “Sport Pack” as an example of how the new range of Lotus Sport options can be configured.

The entry level and launch edition are available with the incredibly popular UK SVA option pack, making it possible for owners to drive to a circuit, race around all day and drive home in the evening without the hassle and expense of a trailer. This option is definitely worth ticking. It is also now possible to get these 2-Elevens road registered in a number of markets around the world using the relevant territory specific registration approval process.

The light weight of the 2-Eleven translates into lightning turn-in and intoxicating performance, providing a very addictive tonic. In entry level specification with the order box for the carbon fibre body ticked, the 2-Eleven comes in at a featherweight kerb mass of 700 kg (1540 lbs), which equates to a dry weight of just 648 kg (1430 lbs).

The addition of the Aero Pack gives the ability to change the high speed balance of the car through adjustment of the rear wing angle: with the wing set at maximum attack over 10 % of the vehicle’s weight is generated in downforce at 100 mph (160 kph). The Aero Pack consists of a race proven adjustable carbon fibre rear wing and to provide front to rear aerodynamic balance, a lengthened composite front splitter is incorporated. Even in SVA trim with the road legal aerodynamic aids the 2-Eleven produces 60 kg (132 lbs) of downforce at 100 mph (160 km/h)

2008 Lexus LX 570 Review

The 2008 Lexus LX 570 is the vehicular proof of the saying, "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes." There might be a snowstorm or a desert between you and where you're going, yet the LX is always prepared, always wearing the right clothes.

Compared to last year's LX 470, the 2008 LX 570 has the same wheelbase but is fractionally longer, wider and taller. The exterior has been freshened but is still conservative, and underneath is a traditional body-on-frame design. The frame is considerably stiffer than before, and Lexus says the payoff is enhanced ruggedness, towing capacity and crashworthiness. It also works in conjunction with a new front suspension design to improve on-road handling.

2008 Lexus LX 570 2008 Lexus LX 570 -2Under the hood is a new 383-horsepower 5.7-liter V8 matched with a six-speed automatic transmission, a powertrain that comes from the latest Toyota Tundra pickup truck. The Land Cruiser has the same setup, and the two also share a new electronically controlled, off-road crawl control feature. The LX 570 gains the upper hand, however, thanks to an electronically controlled suspension with adaptive ride height and damping control, allowing it to deliver an ideal suspension setup no matter what kind of terrain it's driving over.

Inside, three rows of seating for up to eight people are once again standard, but the new model is just like the old one in that the third row is too cramped for anyone other than children. The third-row seat still doesn't fold flat, and maximum cargo space is no better than that of most midsize SUVs. But the new LX 570 has almost no peer when it comes to coddling thanks to high-quality materials and the latest pure luxury features, such as power-sliding second-row seats, a superb Mark Levinson audio system, four-zone climate control and a video monitor with front and sideview video cameras.

Thanks to updates like these, the 2008 Lexus LX 570 remains one of our top recommendations for the luxury SUV buyer. On a daily basis, it's exceptionally pleasant and so easy to drive that it could be a first choice as your daily driver. And if you happen to find yourself on some rock-strewn trail, well, the LX 570 will do you right there, too. Of course, this do-everything description could also be applied to the Land Rover Range Rover, a vehicle that surpasses the LX in terms of historical prestige. But the similarly powered Supercharged version is quite a bit more expensive and trails the Lexus in terms of its reputation for reliability. Another notable choice is the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, a very impressive luxury SUV in its own right. But it lacks the LX's off-road prowess. So if you want a vehicle that always puts you in the right set of clothes, the 2008 LX 570 is the obvious choice.

2008 Morgan Life Car

(from Morgan Press Release) Zero emission hydrogen fuel cell car
The Morgan LIFECar takes a fresh look at transport, offering as revolutionary an approach to personal freedom as did the brilliant Morgan Threewheeler introduced by HFS Morgan nearly 100 years ago.

2008 Morgan Life Car2008 Morgan Life Car-22008 Morgan Life Car-3The LIFECar is powered by a fuel cell that is sized to meet the constant load requirement of cruising (about 20% of peakpower) and as a result significant weight and cost reductions have been made over other designs. By recapturing energy during braking, maximum performance is available to LIFECar for acceleration from this unique mix of technologies.

The project is based around hydrogen as the fuel source because when it burns the only emission is pure water. Hydrogen is potentially abundant and Spowers brought in Linde to the project for their expertise across the whole hydrogen supply chain from production and distribution through to their high pressure refuelling systems.

The hydrogen is converted to electricity using a 4 stack hydrogen PEM fuel cell. Apart from 22Kw of electricity, the fuel cell produces only heat and water as by-products. The fuel cell made by QinetiQ operates at 45% efficiency, a significant advance over the conventional internal combustion engine.

Electricity is directed to 4 electric motor/generators, each connected directly to a driving wheel. Not only are these motors super-efficient – 92-94% across their operating range - but they have inbuilt re-generative braking, recapturing the kinetic energy for when vivid acceleration is required (and reducing energy consumption still further). Whilst regenerative braking is not a new concept, current applications offer around 10% energy reuse, whereas in LIFECar, up to 50% of this stored kinetic energy can be re-employed.

LIFECar has been engineered to deliver energy consumption equivalent to 150 mpg (1.8 l/100km) on petrol with a top speed potential of 80-85 mph, a 0-62 time of under 7 seconds and a 250 mile range. This unique mix of technology has been packaged by Morgan to add yet another unique twist to the project. Using only the best and lightest materials that are also attractive from an environmental and an aesthetic point of view, aluminium, wood and leather, the Morgan DNA is clearly visible and gives a new dimension to an environmentally sensitive concept.

2008 MTM Audi R8

(from MTM Press Release) It has long been questioned and discussed if we should attend to the Audi R8. Today we can give you an answer: Yes, we will! Therefore we do not want to withhold the first pictures of our prototype.

2008 MTM Audi R82008 MTM Audi R8-2The test car is equipped with forged mtm bimoto rims which – due to their style of construction - are very light but yet rigid. The rim sizes for front and rear axle are specially customized for the R8 and positively influence the tendency to over-/understeer. Sport tyres – so-called semislicks – with MOT approval are optionally available . The rims will be in stock in June.

A special tidbit will be the exhaust-gas system made of stainless steel which will of course be delivered with a flue gas damper control. Please allow us to claim to have managed to improve the already impressive serial sound. Thanks to an elaborated damper piloting we can increase the volume without leaving the permitted range. The result is a TBV certificate delivered with every exhaust-gas system. In stock presumably in May.

Spacers for series wheels, brake pads as well as sport brake pads with 380x34mm for the front axle are already available! The according price list will be put online soon.

There is still room left for speculation. Chassis, aerodynamics and a significant engine modification “house-style”.... Just wait and see!

2008 Nissan Quest Review

Normally, automakers focus on safety, seat capacity and helpful convenience features when designing a new minivan. Yet when Nissan redesigned its Quest minivan four years ago, it decided to take a different path. In addition to the usual minivan attributes, the automaker gave the Quest bold exterior styling, a powerful V6, responsive handling and a radical interior makeover. The hope was that these changes would finally make the Quest an all-star name in the minivan market.

2008 Nissan Quest2008 Nissan Quest-2Like many revolutions, however, hope was crushed by grim reality. Nobody liked the dash's center-mounted gauges, the exterior styling was deemed "love it or hate it" and overall driving dynamics were still overshadowed by the Honda Odyssey's. Sales were slow. Last year, Nissan regrouped, ordering up a more conservative dash design and new features. On the whole, the Quest was much better for it.

The 2008 Nissan Quest is much the same. As before, pleasing driving characteristics and a stylish overall design are its main strengths. But in our opinion, this still isn't enough to make the Quest a top choice. In terms of the more important minivan aspects like versatility, feature availability and value, the Quest falls short. As such, you'll likely want to check out others in this class, such as the Dodge Grand Caravan, Honda Odyssey, Kia Sedona and Toyota Sienna before settling on the Quest.

Powertrains and Performance
Motivating the front-wheel-drive Quest is a 3.5-liter V6 good for 235 horsepower. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard on all trims. For 2008, EPA fuel economy estimates stands at 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway -- average for the minivan segment.

2008 Lumma Design BMW CLR X530

(from Lumma Design Press Release) Wider and faster: CLR X530 from LUMMA DESIGN based on the new BMW X5.

Once again, LUMMA DESIGN takes on a real challenge - now with the new X5. The Swabian tuners provide an individualized appearance implementing outer and inner enhancements for the exceptional successful Bavarian SAV. Additionally, under the X5's hood the 4.8 litre V8 has received a moderate power enhancement. Voilà: the CLR X530 is born!

2008 Lumma Design BMW CLR X5302008 Lumma Design BMW CLR X530-2Power enhancement plus striking engine kit
The 4.8-Litre V8 from BMW certainly doesn't belong to the weakest category and while one can never have enough power, LUMMA encourages just a wee bit more horsepower out. The increase power of 21 kW/ 28 HP obtains LUMMA with new programming of engine electronics including fine tuning. Following the available from LUMMA-only modifications, is an increase of top speed by about 10 to 15 km/h as well as approximately 35 Nm increased torque for a superior locomotion. The really big bomb being geared up from LUMMA for the Essen Motor Show 2007 is a compressor alternation whose engine power can easily be derived from the name of the body kit X530! A super-X5!

A further performance plus promises LUMMA's sport stainless steel exhaust system. The possible extra power gained from this flap control equipped construction moves in the range from ca. 6-8 kW. Available added extras are the sporty end tailpipes for both series as well as LUMMA equipped vehicles. LUMMA offers the four-pieced set (size: 125x95 mm) in either in black or anodised silver for diesel and gasoline engine vehicles for application with LUMMA rear apron. www.LUMMA-DESIGN.com.

Galpinized Jaguar XF

It's been argued that the Jaguar XF lost a lot of the edge that it's conceptual predecessor displayed on the show stand. The end result was less than thrilling, but the available powerplants and sumptuous interior may have made up for the exterior's shortcomings.

Galpinized Jaguar XFGalpinized Jaguar XF-2Galpinized Jaguar XF-3Galpin Jaguar, the largest volume Jag dealership in the States, has decided to pull an Emeril on the XF and kick it up a notch through a custom, two-tone paint scheme, 22-inch, color-matched Forgiato wheels, smoked tail lamps and "blacked-out" window trim. Thankfully, Galpin has left most of the interior intact, save the wood trim and matching black and burgundy leather seats. Overall, the effect ranges from cruel to unusual, and as such, we're considering a call to the Haig.

New Volkswagen Touareg R50 - first pics

This is the hot new Volkswagen Touareg R50 – the blistering top-of-the-range model of VW’s full-size off-roader.

The new Volkswagen Touareg R50 – which was leaked onto the internet last year – features a massive 5-litre V10 turbo-diesel engine producing 345bhp.

Volkswagen Touareg R50Volkswagen Touareg R50-2But the headline figure of the new Volkswagen Touareg R50 is its 627lb/ft of pulling power – which is claimed to be ‘more than enough to pull a Boeing 747 passenger aircraft’ – making it one of the world’s most powerful production diesels ever.

The Volkswagen Touareg R50 can sprint from 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds – just 0.2 seconds slower than the range-topping 247bhp Volkswagen Golf R32 – and, where permitted, can hit a top speed of 146mph. And despite the whopping 5-litre turbo-diesel V10 engine sitting up front, the two-tonne Volkswagen Touareg R50 is said to return 22.4mpg.

The Volkswagen Touareg is fitted with a permanent four-wheel-drive system – dubbed 4MOTION – and the 345hp is channelled to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox.Volkswagen has also fitted the Touareg R50 with CDC – Continuous Damping Control – with a sports modification which lowers the car’s ride height, meaning the R50 should be as capable in the bends as it is on the straights.

The Volkswagen Touareg R50 distinguishes itself from the standard models with 21-inch ten-spoke alloy wheels, wheel-arch extensions, a roof spoiler and a matt-chrome radiator grille. The range-topping Volkswagen Touareg R50 will be aimed squarely at the luxury sporting SUV market – such as the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne – and will cost from £61, 885.

Volkswagen
has announced only a limited number of Touareg R50’s will be made available for sale in the UK.

Porsche to take Livingstone to court on congestion charge

Luxury car company Porsche is to carry out its threat to take London Mayor Ken Livingstone to court over the new £25 congestion charge in the capital for the highest-polluting vehicles. The German sports car manufacturer announced last month that it would submit an application for judicial review to the Royal Courts of Justice unless the Mayor reconsidered the policy.

PorscheBut in a formal reply to Porsche today, Mr Livingstone and Transport for London (TfL) made it clear they would go ahead with the charge, saying it was legal and proportionate.Porsche said it would therefore file a request for judicial review. Mr Livingstone will then have 21 days to acknowledge the Porsche claim.

Responding to the Mayor's decision, Andy Goss, managing director of Porsche Cars GB, said: "The new £25 charge will have no meaningful impact on congestion and TfL's own figures show the anticipated CO2 emissions savings in a year could be equivalent to less than four hours of emissions from Heathrow.

Under the new congestion charge regime, due to come into force on October 27, owners of high-polluting vehicles will have to pay £25 to enter central London. The vehicles affected are those that emit more than 225g of CO2 per kilometre and those registered before March 2001 with engines larger than 3,000cc.

Vehicles emitting less than 120g of CO2 per kilometre will be eligible for a 100% discount on the congestion charge.Of the cars currently being driven in London's congestion charging zone, 17% would be liable for the £25 charge and just 2% would receive the total discount.

2008 Carlsson Aigner CK65 RS

The Carlsson Aigner CK65 RS seems to sense that this road into the hills above Monte Carlo is gradually opening up and it piles on the speed almost instinctively. Freed from the tight and winding roads around Casino Square, the red-and-black peril simply sucks up the black ribbon of road.

There's no nautical feeling of 2 tons getting up on a bow wave, just a shimmy from the wide rear tires as 700 turbocharged horsepower wrestles with the stability control computer of this highly tuned Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG.

2008 Carlsson Aigner CK65 RS2008 Carlsson Aigner CK65 RS-22008 Carlsson Aigner CK65 RS-3Suddenly we forget that the interior has given us a migraine. Suddenly we overlook the eye-watering price tag of $465,000. Instead we remember the glimpse of the mouthed expletive from the window of a police cruiser that we passed in Casino Square and we finally appreciate the work that's gone into this monster.

We're aboard the finest grand touring car available at any price. Carlsson says to think of this as a Maybach for those who actually like to drive.

The subtleties of racetrack engineering might elude the kind of customers that will buy the 2008 Carlsson CK65 RS Eau Rouge. When all is said and done, this is a super-fast limousine with a sporting look. But Rolf Hartge believes those who purchase one of these limited-edition cars will relish the simple knowledge that almost nothing can stay with this ostentatious display of wealth at the traffic lights.

This is as close as Carlsson's new car will ever come to Eau Rouge in the real world, but given the chance, this Maybach for real drivers is a match for any luxury GT on the planet.

2008 Lumma Design BMW CLR X530 Diesel

(from Lumma Design Press Release) Power diesel in white suit: LUMMA DESIGN CLR X530 on the basis of the BMW X5 3.0d and 3.0sd

* CLR X530 body kit with broad assembly parts for X5; light weight bonnet
* White paint finish and white rims (LUMMA Racing 3; see photographic material)
* Increase in diesel performance to 275 bhp and 600 Nm (3.0d), as well as 330 bhp and 660 Nm (3.0sd)
* Engine optics package with carbon parts and red-coated components
* LUMMA complete wheels in 22 inch
* Lower suspension setting of 40 mm; racy exhaust covers
* Numerous elegant interior accessories

2008 Lumma Design BMW CLR X530 Diesel2008 Lumma Design BMW CLR X530 Diesel-22008 Lumma Design BMW CLR X530 Diesel-3After LUMMA DESIGN recently unleashed the X5 as the X530 with brute-force 530 bhp, the German tuner has now also turned its attention to the diesel versions. They have also been treated to the broader X530 aerodynamic kit in addition to a substantial increase in power delivery and torque. This also cuts a good figure in white, which is complemented by white wheels (see photographic material). In addition, LUMMA has made changes to the chassis, sound and interior.

Performance enhancement for 3.0d and 3.0sd
LUMMA has implemented the diesel motor tuning with its D-Power-Box. This additional electronic circuit now coaxes a generous 275 bhp out of the 3.0d, instead of the standard 235. The torque increases from 520 to a convincing 600 Nm. The 3.0sd attains performance data that makes some sports cars turn pale in comparison. This is because, a phenomenal 330 bhp, instead of 286, has been fitted and instead of 580, there are 660 Nm on the power train.

Of course, LUMMA also continues to offer a performance enhancement for the 4.8 litre pertrol-V8 by a moderate 28 bhp or by considerably more horsepower to 530 bhp, in this case with compressor.

An even sportier rear appearance for the 3.0d and 3.0sd is guaranteed by LUMMA’s exhaust pipe covers, two on each side (120x95 mm). LUMMA continues to furnish the petrol versions with the complete sport exhaust system of stainless steel.

More information on LUMMA’S extensive tuning program can be found on the Internet at www.LUMMA-DESIGN.com.

Nissan to unveil all-electric concept - New York '08 Preview

All-electric vehicles are on their way, and Nissan plans to be a player with an all-electric vehicle on the market in Japan and the U.S. by 2010 for fleet customers and 2012 for everyone else. While the automaker has been testing a system that uses a lithium-ion battery pack in its boxy Cube runabout (above), it's not known if the Cube will get the electric drivetrain when it goes on sale in the U.S.

Nissan electric conceptNissan electric concept-2Nissan electric concept-3Regardless, Nissan plans to preview its electric intentions in two weeks at the 2008 New York Auto Show with an all-electric concept car. Details are scarce, but it's said to have a range of 100 miles and a top speed of 75 mph. While it's true that most people drive less than 100 miles per day, a top speed of just 75 mph seems especially limiting. Apparently passing on the freeway is not an option on this car. We'll be on hand in New York to catch this EV concept's debut, so stay tuned.

Audi launches Iron Man mini-site

Audi is obviously pleased with the product placement monopoly it's acquired on the upcoming blockbuster movie Iron Man starring Robert Downey, Jr., Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow, among others. Sharing the screen with those actors will be the Audi R8 - Tony Stark's personal daily driver, an airborne Q7 SUV, and no doubt many other autos branded with the four rings that are subtly slipped in here and there. To drive home the point that Audi is as hip as can be, the German automaker has launched an Iron Man mini-site that, at the moment, looks pretty flashy but lacks much substance.

Iron Man mini-site-1Iron Man mini-site-2There are of course movie stills, which you can check out below in our own gallery sans the flash interface, as well as the trailer and a few brief video clips that are new and heavily infused with Audi products. Other than that, there's also a breakdown of the Audi R8 and its features, which you could also find on Audi's regular website, as well as character bios (Did you know Stark's assistant, Virginia Potts, drives an S5?). Regardless of how heavy handed Audi is with the product placement, we still expect Iron Man to be an epic on-screen adventure and orders of magnitude better than that other car movie coming out this summer.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Chrysler LLC is preparing to spend $281 million to renovate the Jefferson North Assembly plant in Detroit where the company now builds the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Commander.

The automaker hasn’t said anything publicly at the future Grand Cherokee but privately Chrysler officials have confirmed that the money is being spent to produce new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, starting in the summer and fall of 2010.

2011 Jeep Grand CherokeeThe Jeep Commander, which also is built at Jefferson North, will probably be dropped as Chrysler reduces the number of models it builds as part of the effort to right-size the company for its shrunken market share, analysts have suggested.

While the Commander gets decommissioned, the new Grand Cherokee–one of the Chrysler’s signature vehicles–will come with an optional diesel engine made by Daimler AG or with an optional two-mode hybrid system, which Chrysler has developed jointly through a joint venture with General Motors, Daimler and BMW, Chrysler officials indicated privately last week.

In addition, the 2011 Grand Cherokee will be one of the very first vehicles engineered and sourced under the tough regime being installed by Chrysler’s new chief executive officer Robert Nardelli and vice chairman and president Jim Press. Both Press and Nardelli are taking a direct role in decisions on the new Grand Cherokee, Chrysler sources said.

Key supply contracts will be awarded in the next few months but the new purchasing regime installed by Nardelli is having a huge impact. At the same time, the influence of Daimler’s product development system on Chrysler decisions is rapidly diminishing.

The new Grand Cherokee, however, will have to be developed for export, which probably means it is being developed for both right and left-hand drive markets.

2009 Mazda RX-8 now on sale in Japan

While we've already seen the new digs that Mazda has given its 2+2, rotary-powered RX-8 model at the Tokyo Auto Salon and Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, the car that's always been shown up to this point has been the top shelf RS model. Perhaps you're curious to know what a base RX-8 looks like without the big wheels and wings. Well, the updated RX-8 has gone on sale today in Japan, and Mazda has released new images that show the car without all that high-performance filigree.

2009 Mazda RX-8 2009 Mazda RX-8 -2The larger air intakes up front remain, but gone are the deep chin spoiler, rear spoiler and 19-inch wheels. One of the lesser models known as the Type-E in Japan makes do with new standard 17-inch wheels (up from 16-inches). Mazda's changes to the RX-8 are more than skin deep and nearly all will be featured on models sold in the U.S., as well. 2008 MINI Cooper Clubman Review

Sometimes a Mini is just too mini. Plenty of car buyers lust after a Mini Cooper but find the cramped backseat and minimal cargo capacity too much of a drawback. A potential solution for these frustrated fans is the 2008 Mini Cooper Clubman.

2008 MINI Cooper Clubman2008 MINI Cooper Clubman-2This lengthened Cooper increases rear legroom by 2.5 inches, which is hardly limolike, but every bit helps. The Clubman also adds a passenger-side rear-hinged door to allow rear passengers to make more graceful entries and exits. The cargo area has also grown, with 3.5 added cubic feet of space along with a pair of nifty rear doors that swing outward like those on a cargo van. The visual result of this added length is a Mini that's not quite proportional and even more quirky than its traditional brother. Plus, it's the first car since the old Camry wagon to feature two rear wipers.

Despite its stretched body style (10 inches in total), the Clubman is still all Mini, retaining most of that trademark go-kart handling. The same Cooper and Cooper S trim levels are available, along with their respective engine choices, which are both a significant improvement over the mills they replaced in last year's model redesign. Both are more refined, powerful and substantially more fuel efficient. The base engine is a particularly impressive improvement, and as such, many buyers might find the regular Cooper perfectly adequate for their daily driving needs. The excellent turbocharged engine in the Cooper S Clubman is practically overkill -- it is prone to torque steer -- but speed junkies will love the rush of power it provides.

Powertrains and Performance
The base Cooper Clubman is powered by a 1.6-liter inline-4 that produces 118 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque. The Cooper S raises the bar considerably, packing a turbocharged version of the base Cooper's four-cylinder. It generates a robust 172 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque, and produces a 0-60-mph time of an estimated 6.7 seconds. Both engines come standard with a six-speed manual transmission, while a six-speed automatic with manual shift control is optional.

With the manual transmission, the base Clubman achieves 28 mpg city and 37 mpg highway, while the Cooper S gets 26/34 mpg. Opting for the automatic hurts mileage by about 2 mpg.

2008 Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Preview

Continuing its commitment to launch a new model at every major European motor show for the forseeable future, Lamborghini took the wraps of a fresh version of the Gallardo.

2008 Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4Badged the LP560-4, at its heart is a new 5.2-liter V-10 gasoline engine, delivering 552 hp at 8000 rpm. That's an increase of around 40 hp over the outgoing Gallardo. Total body weight is down to 3109 pounds, which is 44 pounds lighter than the old model.

The two-seater will accelerate to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 201 mph. Fuel economy is around 8 mpg, but despite the power hike CO2 emissions are down by 18 percent.

Lamborghini also says the LP560-4 has improved traction, handling and high-speed stability over its predecessor. The suspension is new, the all-wheel drive system has been redesigned and the aerodynamics package improved, in part because of a new rear defuser. Gear changes, controlled by robotized paddles on the steering wheel, are now 40 percent quicker.

Standard features include an electronic rear spoiler, 19-inch wheels, twin front and side airbags, plus stability control. The new headlamps have a daytime function, with 15 LEDs integrated beneath the bi-xenon lamps.

2009 Volvo XC60 Preview

The safest car we have ever built - that's the claim Volvo is making about the new XC60. From a firm that has built its entire reputation on making strong cars, it's a bold statement.

Designed as a baby brother to the XC90, an SUV which has been a massive success for the Swedish firm, the XC60 will get its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in a fortnight. It will go on sale in Europe in the autumn, and in North America early next year.

2009 Volvo XC60The XC60 features a variety of intelligent safety systems. The biggest of these is what Volvo is calling City Safety - a unique system that can help the driver avoid or reduce the effects of the type of low-speed impacts that are common in city traffic and urban tailbacks. In short, if the XC60 is about to drive into the vehicle in front and the driver does not react, the car brakes itself.

There will be a choice of three engines from launch in European markets; the turbocharged 3.0-liter in-line six from the V70 wagon which produces 285 hp, and two variants of the 2.4-liter D5 turbodiesel, producing 185 and 163 hp respectively. All-wheel drive is fitted as standard, but during 2009 a front-wheel drive version of the 2.4 will be launched.

The Volvo XC60 will be built at the Volvo Cars factory in Ghent , Belgium . The global sales target is more than 50,000 cars per year. The five largest markets during the peak year of 2010 will be the USA , Germany , Great Britain , Russia and China.

2009 Bugatti Veyron Fbr Preview

For some folks, two is too many -- even when it comes to the relatively mass market world of automobiles.

Indeed, exclusivity is, as much as anything, the appeal of a car like the Bugatti Veyron 16/4. Yet even at more than a million Euros, a buyer might actually suffer the indignity of seeing another one of the 1000-horsepower supercars show up at the club. What's a billionaire to do?

2009 Bugatti Veyron FbrCough up a bit more - for a cool 1.55 million of those increasingly valuable Euros - and get the even more exclusive Bugatti Veyron Fbr. It's a joint effort of Bugatti, a subsidiary of the big Volkswagen AG, and the French luxury company, Hermes.

If it seems like an odd pairing, it turns out Ettore Bugatti and Emil Hermes first worked together almost 100 years ago, when the French automaker turned to the saddle specialist to produce a custom-stitched trunk for the first Buggati Royale. Over the years, they worked together on a number of projects, though this is the first time the two brands have come back together since VW acquired and revived the French supercar marque, ten years ago.

With a maximum run of 300 Veyrons, and over 220 already ordered, you likely won't run into another Hermes edition, even racing around the countryside at nearly 250 mph in the 1001-horsepower Fbr. The 16-cylinder engine and drivetrain remain the same on the Hermes-badged model, but there are a number of striking visual changes, starting with the distinctive, two-tone paint scheme that begins at the nose, sweeps through the cabin and flows across the back deck, below the Veyron's spoiler. The car's grille has been redesigned, now featuring an H-pattern laser cut and hand-finished in aluminum.

The limited-edition model will be available late in 2008.

Volvo Headed Back to New Jersey

Pack up the lutefisk (maybe in a new XC60 crossover) and leave the keys to the PAG building behind–Volvo’s calling it quits in California and heading back to New Jersey.

VolvoFord’s upscale brand–likely the last Ford European brand left in the company, once Jaguar and Land Rover are finally sold to Tata this month–is setting its sights for Rockleigh, N.J., where it has a customer service center.

Before the Swedish brand was absorbed into Ford’s old Premier Automotive Group (PAG), Volvo had its headquarters in the Garden State. But the grand Ford plan under former CEO Jac Nasser was to combine Volvo, Aston Martin, Jaguar and Land Rover (along with office building cohorts Mazda) to create a new southern California power base for the company.

Aston Martin was the first to vacate–and with Jaguar Land Rover’s imminent sale to the Indian concern, it was considered a given that Volvo would move its base back to the East Coast, closer to the company’s European time zone and a bigger slice of its American buyers.

2008 Faralli and Mazzanti Vulca V12

(from Faralli & Mazzanti Press Release) A perfect mix between apparently opposite worlds such as craftmanship and modern technology, including technical partnerships at international level, F&M is proud to announce the first car entirely designed and developed in-house: Vulca V12.

The name, as per Faralli & Mazzanti tradition, is inspired by the Etruscan world.
Vulca da Veio is the most famous Etruscan sculptor, responsible for some of the most well known artistical expressions of this great and mysterious ancient population, including the “Apollo di Veio”.

2008 Faralli and Mazzanti Vulca V122008 Faralli and Mazzanti Vulca V12-22008 Faralli and Mazzanti Vulca V12-3Vulca V12 classically interprets the typical concept of “GT all’italiana”: lightweight, hand beaten all aluminium bodywork, 2+2 coupè, sinuous and modern, elegant yet aggressive style. Under the hood pulsates a powerful, reliable, latest generation V12 engine which provides in all its guises exhilarating performance.

Vulca V12 will be produced in very limited numbers: only 10, individually numbered. This will ensure exclusivity and unbelievable attention to detail.

2008 Nissan Dualis review

It turns in like a car, the body stays flat and it is not flustered by mid-corner bumps - how many SUVs can you say that about?

Model tested:
2008 Nissan Dualis ST manual - $28,990, as tested $30,990
Refinement. Fuel consumption. Safety credentials.
Poor rear vision. Mild performance. Small boot.
CarAdvice rating:
Model range: $28,990 - $35,990
Options fitted: Electronic stability control, side and curtain airbags, 16-inch alloy wheels

2008 Nissan Dualis2008 Nissan Dualis-2SUV - sport utility vehicle - is a creeping Americanism but a useful one. The phrase, if not the vehicles it refers to, deserves to be as ubiquitous as the Big Mac. Its inherent contradiction and clumsiness (Sport and utility? Yeah, right) serves as a fair warning to anyone who thinks about purchasing one of these things. Caveat emptor, trendsetters.

A four-wheel drive, by comparison, is a very different beast, the automotive equivalent of a frontiersman, with few social graces, a fair number of filthy habits but an impressive repertoire of basic bush skills that have been bred out of the rest of us.

Nissan makes both SUVs and 4WDs. The new Dualis is at the SUV end of the spectrum. True, it’s got an all-wheel drive system but Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City would be more interested in the rugged outdoor life.

Dualis is a metropolitan creature, designed to be irresistible to urban dwellers who find themselves torn between a snappy little hatchback and an appealingly butch off-roader. As a sort of off-road hatchback it combines the advantages both, Nissan says.

US-market Alfas could be built in Mexico

Alfa Romeo is returning to the US market in about a year, offering the zooty 8C Competizione and 8C Spider atop a range of less spectacular offerings. While the top-end 8Cs will probably be Italian emigres, the 149 and 169 sedans could be put together in Mexico. Alfa doesn't have a hard and fast decision yet, and could pick another site, even one in North America. Moving the labor to Mexico for the volume sellers might prove to be a wise move on Alfa's part.

Alfa RomeoThe dollar continues to take a beating, pushing up the cost of European items on US sales markets, and building somewhere else would sidestep some of those increased costs. Alfa is trying this idea in China, too, where Chery will assemble automobiles for that market. We're all for it if it gets the keys to some stylish Italians in our hands while holding the prices down. The quality can't be any worse than it was in the bad old days that led to the notorious reputation for unreliability that afflicted Italian marques. Besides, those shop queens were so joyous to drive, they made suckers out of all of us, and we'd do it again, given the chance.

2008 Bugatti Type 12-2 Streamliner Concept Design by Racer X Design

(from Racer X Design) Type 12-2 ‘Streamliner’
A few months ago Racer X Design released the sketches of the KC-427, which is currently being built and expected to be shown as a fully built car by the end of the year. The streamliner is not intended for production, and is just one of the many designs that Racer X Design have come up with.

2008 Bugatti Type 12-2 Streamliner Concept Design by Racer X Design2008 Bugatti Type 12-2 Streamliner Concept Design by Racer X Design-2Designed as an example of a luxurious four seater GT, the type 12-2 is the artwork of Reuben Zammit. The aim was to get the type 12-2 immediately recognizable, yet make a signature of it’s own for a specific marquee. A classic front engine rear wheel drive layout. The shape allows for a boot bigger than its rivals, yet keeping the lines flowing. The doors take a large part of the side and the roof for easier access.

The idea is to use a VW derived W12 engine with a twin turbo layout hence the name 12-2. Although not as extravagant as the W16 used in the Veyron, there would be enough power to propel the Type 12-2 to over 200 mph.

Racer X Design is a company that has designed and built some of the best show cars in the business winning first place awards in the XLR-8 live competition every time it competed with 4 different demo cars in 2 different classes for bodystyling.

2008 Bailey Blade Revised Design

(from Bailey Speed) Over the past month, a lot of things have happened with the Blade. The Blade project is still going full force and now that the weather is warming up, it is picking up speed. During the past two weeks, I have been dealing with a variety of regulations for the headlights, specifically how high they were off the ground. When I first designed the car, I used a lot of information from Europe’s specialty car documents and a limited amount of info from the US. In the United States, it is harder to find the right information because every state has its own regulations for specialty cars. I designed the car according to the information I could find regarding headlight heights. While the car met European standards, it did not fully meet US standards and this forced me to redesign the front end and raise the headlights about 2" inches higher.

2008 Bailey Blade Revised Design2008 Bailey Blade Revised Design-2I took the opportunity to make some styling changes based on various comments and suggestions I received as a result of our recent publicity. While the first design was unique and aggressive, I could see ways I could improve it. I addressed this with the new design. The goal was to make the front end flow better with the rest of the car and keep the unique styling and aggressive looks. Feel free to let me know what you think.

The head clearance is still looking good. I have yet to add humps to the Hard Top, but once I do, there will be loads of room for us tall people. The amount of leg room is outrageous... I am 6’4" and can fully extend my legs on both passenger and driver sides and still not touch the fire wall.

New Corbeau FX1 seats have been test fitted in the car. These are similar to the type of seats that I imagine the car will come with in the future. I was worried that they may be too wide, but it turns out, that they fit perfect with room to spare. This is good news for folks that will want Recaro, Sparco and Cobra style racing seats. This is the style of seats I intended for the car from its conception.
