Fisker new hybrid models

Fisker Automotive is going to have its work cut out for it when it comes to meeting its self-imposed deadline of bring the Karma sedan to market by the fourth-quarter of 2009. To complicate matters even further, the automaker is now rumored to be working on three more plug-in hybrids. That would represent a truly serious undertaking for such a small automaker. To ease matters slightly, all four models would use the same basic underpinnings -- including the most important piece of all, the lithium ion battery and its assorted bits.

FiskerFisker has recruited Quantum Technologies, a company which has seen success building vehicles for the military, for help in creating the drivetrain for its electric vehicles. Reportedly on the drawing board are a coupe, a convertible and an SUV, all of which should go a long way towards meeting Fisker's goal of selling 15,000 vehicles a year by 2011.

BMW 1-Series in the Schnitz

Who'd have thunk it? AC Schnitzer has turned the awkward looking BMW 1-Series coupe into something really rather desirable.

BMW 1-Series -1BMW 1-Series -2The styling features, which fit to the car with or without the M-Technik bodykit, include front and rear skirt 'attachments' and enlarged side intakes on the front spoiler.

According to AC Schnitzer this gives the car a 'greedier, more competitive look'. Right you are.

Engine upgrades are available throughout the range. The 120d gets a power boost to 210bhp from 177bhp, while the 123d goes up from 204 to 240bhp.

The most appealing however is the 135i, which AC Schnitzer has ramped up from 306 to 360bhp - that's 15bhp more than a 3.6-litre Porsche 911 Carrera...

2008 Mercedes Benz E Class

The 2008 Mercedes-Benz E-Class features one of the most diverse engine and transmission lineups in the luxury sedan market. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is unique in that it is the only luxury sedan available with a diesel engine. "Being a diesel," reports Edmunds, "it boasts superior fuel mileage and plentiful torque." The Mercedes-Benz 2008 E320 features a 3.2-liter V-6 diesel that produces 210 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. Other engine choices include a 3.5-liter V-6 (E350) that produces 268 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque; a 5.5-liter V-8 (E550) that produces 382 hp and 391 pound-feet; and a massive 6.2-liter V-8 (E63 AMG) that produces 507 hp and 465 pound-feet.

2008 Mercedes Benz E Class-12008 Mercedes Benz E Class-2The "manic" Mercedes-Benz 2008 E63 can hit 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds. The E350 does it in the mid-6-second range, the E550 takes 5.2 seconds, and the E320 is no slouch either, taking just 6.8 seconds, all according to Edmunds. It's no wonder Kelley Blue Book claims "the E-Class' engine lineup is one of the most dynamic on the planet." In testing, ConsumerGuide finds the 2008 Mercedes-Benz E-Class offers effortless acceleration and passing power, no matter the engine choice. The E350 is "stately from a stop but gathers speed quickly and has fine passing power"; while the E320 is "similar," it suffers from turbo lag when accelerating from a stop and passing. The E550 is "impressively gutsy from any speed," they conclude.

Buyers of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class E350 or E550 may choose either rear- or all-wheel drive, known as 4Matic. Edmunds reports that "all rear-wheel-drive E-Class models come with a seven-speed automatic, while the 4Matic models feature a five-speed...the automatic offers three modes: Comfort, Sport and Manual." ConsumerGuide says "in all, the transmissions provide smooth, timely shifts."

Fueleconomy.gov ratings for the 2008 Mercedes-Benz E-Class are as follows: 23/32 mpg (E320 diesel); 17/24 mpg (E350 rear-drive), 16/22 mpg (4Matic); 15/22 mpg (E550 rear-drive), 13/19 mpg (4Matic); 12/19 mpg (E63). In their testing of a Mercedes-Benz 2008 E550 4Matic, ConsumerGuide achieves 17.5 mpg. They note "premium-grade gas is required in all non-diesel models."

In the handling department, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is no match for its archrival, the BMW 5-Series. Where the BMW is marketed as the ultimate driving machine and lives up to that, the E-Class is "certainly adequate...but isn't a willing partner like a 5 Series can be," writes Edmunds. They add, "although the Benz E550 is, without question, a track star during acceleration runs, super-athletic moves on a twisty road are not the car's forte."

Renault Safrane

Introduced in 1992 instead of the famous Renault 25 and in operations till 2000, the French automakers decided to replace Safrane with the remarkable Vel Satis. But that didn’t affect sales as they expected, so now the company is thinking of reviving it as a mid-size luxury sedan but the news aren’t THAT great.

Renault SafraneApparently the new Renault Safrane is only going to be available in Gulf States like United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman,Kuwait and Qatar.

Suddenly we’re not so very impressed with this V6 powerplant anymore unless they give it a greenlight for either South Africa or Europe. And make it for a good price if you want us to buy it.

2009 Kia Forte

It’s obvious that the South Koreans from Kia are doing their best to make it the right way. After the great success with Kia Ceed, the guys are going to release a new model dubbed the 2009 Kia Forte.

2009 Kia ForteMain focus is on fuel efficiency considering the high gas (oil) prices, but I’ll have to be honest though it’s not for the racetrack, they really did a good job with the design. As for what’s under the hood, the 124 hp 1.6 liter engine will be offered as standard while the 2.0L versions will come later.

Kia also has great expectations. They estimated (more like .. wish) to sell some 30,000 units this year and up to 250,000 units in 2010. The biggest factor to these figures are the prices which start at ~$11,300 and top up at $18,300. Main competitors for the 2009 Kia Forte are Hyundai Avante, the Renault SM3 or the GM Daewoo Lacetti.

It should go on sale this week.

Nissan GT-R Nismo tuning package

While tuners from every corner of the globe have been hastily showcasing aftermarket performance add-ons for the GT-R, Nissan’s in-house tuning arm has been completely quiet - until now. Nismo has today unveiled its official Club Sports Package for the legendary GT-R - and it will only cost you around $58,000 for the privilege.

Nissan GT-R -1Nissan GT-R -2The package consists of a new tire and wheel setup, suspension, Nismo branded race seats from Recaro and a new titanium exhaust system. The wheels are a lightweight 20-inch forged aluminium product from Ray’s finished in Gunmetal grey, saving a valuable 6kg all up.

These are wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza RE070R run-flat tires and incorporate a valve tire pressure monitoring system. The upgraded suspension package uses Bilstein Damp Tronic shock absorbers and Nismo-developed springs which have been engineered to suit the GT-R’s three distinct suspension modes.

The new driver and passenger race bucket seats were jointly developed with Recaro using a carbon shell wrapped in black leather which features embroidered Nismo and Recaro logos.

In total, they save a further 6kg each, and have been specifically designed to give added support through high-G turns - especially in the shoulders.

Finally, the exhaust system has been assembled from a mix of pure titanium and titanium alloy saving an additional 5kg while cooling has been improved with a new carbon fibre rear diffuser.

Fortunately, the entire package can be further divided into three distinct categories: chassis, seat and exhaust, which can be ordered separately - however there has been no official word on how these components actually effect performance.

2009 Audi TT RS Spied

Work is under way to develop the hottest ever version of Ingolstadt’s sports coupe, likely to be badged TT RS. It promises to be a real alternative to the Porsche Cayman when it goes on sale in late 2008 in Europe.

The TT RS will use a 2.5-litre in-line five-cylinder petrol unit, ten years since Audi last used a similarly designed engine. Early reports indicate that Audi will boost performance to hefty 260kW using twin sequential turbochargers.

2009 Audi TT RS -12009 Audi TT RS -2This entire grunt will be channelled through Audi’s permanent 4WD quattro system and a six-speed manual ‘box, though the DSG dual-clutch system will also be available as an option.

Volkswagen’s new 210kW 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine, lined up for a hot version of Volkswagen’s Passat, will be released at the same time in a more refined form, to replace the 3.2-litre V6 currently powering the range-topping TT.

2010 Suzuki Kizashi Spied

Hiding under yards of heavy black vinyl, padding and netting, is the all-new mid-sized family sedan from Suzuki: the Kizashi! Although the name may (or may not) change, we suspect the later, this is the production version of the concept that made its world debut at the New York Auto Show earlier this year.

2010 Suzuki Kizashi -12010 Suzuki Kizashi -2Obviously toned down a bit from the sleek concept, the Kizashi will be built in Sagara, Japan, and will arrive at dealerships in Australia in early 2010. Suzuki is pitting the Kizashi up against Toyota’s Camry and – in the U.S. – the hot selling Chevrolet Malibu, therefore it was no surprise to find a few of the Chevys out testing with the Kizashi prototypes.

Power-wise, we’re expecting the base model to be equipped with a ~120kW 2.3-litre 4-cylinder engine, and the top-of-the-line Kizashi will be powered by a 3.6-litre V6 (with around 220kW) mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. One Suzuki engineer recently told CarAdvice that the Kizashi will be available in higher specification as an All-Wheel-Drive, pitching it as a competitor to the Subaru Liberty.

Will Suzuki break into the mid-sized market with the Kizashi?

2008 Lexus IS F

The higher-ups at Toyota may have decided to axe the replacement for the Lexus SC convertible, but don't get too used to the idea of a world without a wind-in-your-hair Lexus. Word has it they've given the green light to a convertible version of the current IS sedan. Of course, lopping off the doors and roof of a four-door is hardly unheard of, as that's just what Audi did to make the A4 convertible, but while that 'vert is set to be replaced by the A5 cabrio, Lexus is going the opposite direction.

2008 Lexus IS F-12008 Lexus IS F-2Lexus IS cabrio is tipped to come in 250 and 350 varieties, with Lexus reasoning that there'd be no market for an IS-F convertible. But fret not, as the same reports suggest that a lightweight IS-F sedan is on its way, again going the opposite way of the Germans as BMW just canceled the M3 CSL program.

2005 Mini Wears Bisazza

(from Mini Press Release) 'MINI WEARS BISAZZA' - TAILORED MOSAIC OUTFITS ADORN FOUR MINIS

Woodcliff Lake, NJ - May 13, 2005... This spring, four MINIs morph into mobile mosaics as internationally renowned Bisazza transforms two MINI hardtops and two MINI convertibles into one-of-a-kind works of modern art. Bisazza craftsmen have encrusted each MINI with over 30,000 colored glass tesserae, creating four "artomotive" masterpieces in the themes of a Zebra, Summer Flowers, Tartan plaid and a Dama. The tesserae, each one-half inch by one-half inch in size were used to transform the vehicles, with 31,700 tesserae laid on each convertible and 37,004 on each coupe.

2005 Mini Wears Bisazza-12005 Mini Wears Bisazza-2Two of these stunning works - the Tartan and the Dama - are on display at the Conran Shop in New York City from May 14 to June 5. The cars are part of Conran's exclusive British Influence exhibition, curated by Max Fraser, celebrating 'all things British.' The exhibition is also concurrent with the 17th International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) from May 14-17 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. The ICFF is North America's leading trade fair for avant-garde interior design with 500 exhibitors from all over the world expected.

The mosiac-ed MINIs are on tour around the world at select design and furniture exhibitions. The cars debuted in Milan at the Salone Internationale del Mobile, April 13-18, 2005. The two other MINIs - Zebra and Summer Flower - are also currently on display in Berlin Mai in Berlin from May 5-16. "The partnership between MINI and Bisazza underscores a shared philosophy that values designs that are as thrilling as they are sexy, as classic as they are innovative," said Jim McDowell, Vice President, MINI. "We are thrilled to engage with such an avant-garde partner."

About Bisazza

2008 Kawasaki Ninja 250R

The Ninja 250R is playfully referred to as the Ninjette, and has been considered one of the better beginner bikes since its introduction over 20 years ago. This year's redesign is radical, with new bodywork, more power, beefed up brakes, and—most tellingly—the inclusion of a gas gauge. The Ninja 250R is a great commuter bike for those willing to trade some horsepower for fuel efficiency. Best of all, the Ninja is priced at only $3499.

2008 Kawasaki Ninja 250R-12008 Kawasaki Ninja 250R-2One of the most important features to consider for new riders is seat height, and the 2008 Kawasaki Ninja 250R's saddle sits only 30.5 in. from the ground. It has a rear cowl that can be replaced with a passenger seat for an extra $99. Hidden underneath its sporty bodywork—which is available in green, red or blue—is a carbureted, liquid-cooled, DOHC 249 cc parallel twin engine with exhaust routed through a 2-into-1 system.

The powerplant is now quieter and packs better low- and midrange power—oh, and a tastier exhaust note too. Retuned intake and exhaust ports smooth out the power delivery, and maximum torque is a modest 16.2 lb.-ft. at a stratospheric 9500 rpm. But with only 333 pounds to haul around (plus rider), that number becomes bigger than it sounds. The engine is mated to a traditional six-speed gearbox.

Slowing this tiny package is easy with a two-piston, 290 mm petal-disc setup mounted up front, and a 220 mm disc at the rear wheel. The 37 mm fork is nonadjustable, but the rear Uni-Track suspension has five-way preload adjustability. Larger 17 in. wheels not only accommodate the larger brakes, they also enable vast possibilities for tire fitment.

Bugatti Veyron Fbg par Hermes

We know what you're thinking, because we're in the same lamentable position ourselves: you'd totally order up that uber-exclusive Hermes edition Veyron, but you're not a big fan of the brown and tan paint scheme. Fortunately Bugatti has heard your cries, brother, and announced the availability of new color options for the Veyron Fbg.

Bugatti Veyron Fbg-1Bugatti Veyron Fbg-2The announcement actually came from Monterey but was quickly overshadowed, somewhat ironically, by the unveiling of the open-top Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport and the subsequent auction of its first example for $3.2 million. The unveiling of the new-tint Hermes Veyrons took place at the Quail motorsport gathering on Monterey Peninsula, where Bugatti revealed the four new color schemes available: "indigo blue and vermilion", "indigo blue and lime green", " black and garance red" and "Prussian blue and blue jean".

We're not entirely sure what all these colors are, exactly, and given that Bugatti put them in quotation marks, we're not sure they're sure, either. They undoubtedly would have shown us pictures of all four, but given that these 1.5 million euro hyper-exotics are made to order and available only from the end of the year, we doubt examples of each color option have been made yet. Of course they all come decked out with the H-pattern grille, eight-spoke wheels, lavish calfskin interior and exclusive package of specially-made Hermes luggage.

2009 Jaguar XF V6 Diesel Review

Actually, there are a few things. But why don't we start at the beginning? Remember the retro-styled Jaguar S type sedan? Not a bad car, but there were aspects that never were quite right. It seemed … old. But the new XF is the first Jaguar in a very long time that doesn't look like your dad's car. It's modern—hip even.

2009 Jaguar XF V6 Diesel -12009 Jaguar XF V6 Diesel -22009 Jaguar XF V6 Diesel -3Under the hood is the carry-over twin-turbo 60-degree V6 diesel from the S-Type. It's actually a Peugeot/Citroen design—now four years old and built in Dagenham, Essex at a plant belonging to Jaguar's former owner, Ford. The compacted graphite iron block, aluminium-alloy head engine has twin camshafts per bank, four valves per cylinder and weighs just 445 pounds.
In other words it's modern, clever and lightweight.

It's also powerful, delivering 204 hp and 320 lb.-ft. of torque though a six speed automatic and on to the rear wheels. And that's enough to sprint to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds and manage a top speed of 143 mph. But this big cat also delivers a friendly European Combined cycle economy of 31.3 mpg, hough we could only average 29.4 mpg in our tenure of mixed driving, including a couple of 100-mi. journeys.

If the S-type had a glaring fault it was that cheap interior. It looked a bit as if it had been won at the Minnesota State Fair. The XF has changed all that. And now Jaguar's mid-size sedan surpasses nearly all the opposition including BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Made with the traditional materials of wood, leather and aluminium, the XF's design brings the whole equation up to date with wit and charm. The rotary gear selector that rises out of the center console, the air vents that blink open like an Owl's sleepy glare when the car is started—they all work well and never once feel contrived. Even the RAF roundel sticker on the dash, which hides a proximity switch that opens the glove box is clever and original. Not everyone likes the front seats, but we found them supportive and accommodating. The rears are suitable to anyone up to six feet in height and the trunk is generous, even though access is a little restricted and the floor isn't completely level.

Jaguar XF can smooth out a backwoods road without floating or pitching, and still match a BMW 5-Series when it comes to all-guns-blazing, flat-top cornering. The steering system gives the driver huge confidence when the fires are lit and the hammer is down—it's so accurate and makes this machine very easy to place. Likewise the brakes are linear and powerful with an easilly judged pedal effort. Around town, the 3,904-pound XF will cruise like a stretch, button-back chesterfield, its occupants perhaps slightly more aware of the road surface that in an old S-Type, but also more comfortable in the way the car handles the bumps and pot holes.

2009 Hyundai Elantra

Hyundai has added a hatchback version of its Elantra compact sedan to battle it out with cars like the Dodge Caliber, Toyota Matrix, Mazda3 hatchback and Nissan Versa.

Standard equipment includes four-wheel-disc antilock brakes, six airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system and stability control, something not standard among the competition. Other features new to the Touring model are standard USB and auxiliary audio inputs. The center stack design has also been changed.

Power still comes from the same four-cylinder engine, but for an economy car it isn't completely anemic.

2009 Mazda RX-8

There isn’t another car like the Mazda RX-8 on the road today – for a number of reasons.
First, it’s a true four-place sports car, with rear seats even average adults can fit into, so long as those up front are average size too. And getting in and out of the back seats is remarkably easy thanks to narrow, rear-hinged doors similar to those on the old Saturn quad coupes.

2009 Mazda RX-8-12009 Mazda RX-8-2Second, the RX series is still powered by a rotary engine, just as it was when the RX-7 made its debut 30 years ago. In fact, the RX-8 is the only car left on the road using a rotary. In Mazda’s version, as the two three-sided rotors both rotate and orbitally revolve, each side of the rotors gets closer then farther from the wall of the housing, compressing and expanding the combustion chamber similar to the vertical strokes of a piston in a reciprocating engine.

With more than two million rotary engine cars built since the first Cosmo Sport in 1967, Mazda has persisted with the design while other manufacturers have dropped by the wayside. That faith in the rotary’s reliability was proved in 1991 when the Mazda 787B became the first Japanese car to win the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race.

The Renesis rotary in the current generation RX-8 is the latest version of the engine developed by German engineer Felix Wankel during World War II and perfected in the 1950s. It has been named to Ward’s list of 10 best engines multiple times. The Renesis rotary revs higher than ordinary reciprocating gasoline engines – even higher than Honda’s S2000 roadster whose 2.2-litre inline four redlines at 8,000 rpm. The RX-8’s tachometer goes all the way to 10,000 rpm, but redlines at 8,500 where peak output of 232 hp is reached.

The RX-8 looks like it means business, especially with our test car’s ground optional effects kit. And its looks aren’t deceiving.

Incidentally, although the tires are not run-flat there is no spare, unless you order one as a dealer-installed accessory for $595. The space-saver spare is then mounted in the trunk, cutting into a generous 290 litres (10.2 cubic feet) of luggage room that Mazda claims will hold two sets of golf clubs. Without the spare, an emergency inflation kit is found under the trunk deck.

Although the RX-8 seats four, its 2,700 mm wheelbase is just 15 mm longer than that of a Chevrolet Corvette and the overall length of 4,424 mm is 9 mm shorter.

Toyota recycling hybrid batteries

Part of the misconception with hybrid cars has been the production and disposal of the hybrid batteries. Some simply don’t even consider the process, others have been turned away from hybrid cars as a result. To tackle the problem, Toyota Australia has released some information regarding the process. The Big T says there has been a recycling process (in Australia) for the battery packs of its hybrid-technology vehicles for the last seven years.

Toyota Toyota organised the battery recycling process well before the Prius launch in 2001. A similar method has been followed around the world where Toyota sells its hybrid cars. “Toyota Australia regards the batteries as a key ecological issue and has had a recycling solution in place for more than seven years,” Toyota Australia senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said

The hybrid Camry, which the federal government is funding to the sum of $35 million dollars, will be produced in Australia from 2010 and uses the same nickel-metal hydride batteries as in Prius.

So what happens when your hybrid battery needs recycling? The more important question should be: will it ever need recycling? So far over 10,000 Prius cars have been sold in Australia and only 17 battery packs have had to be replaced. Three have been completely recycled while the rest are being used for research and training.

Toyota’s Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMh) batteries don’t contain Cadmium, despite what many think. The plastic, metal and copper wire from the batteries are recycled locally while circuit boards and battery elements are exported for recycling.

In case you have an accident and the battery is damaged, Toyota has briefed roadside assistance and emergency service workers how to handle damaged hybrid vehicles.

Recently a Prius taxi was shown to have managed 500,000km on one single battery.

2009 ABT Audi Q5

(from ABT Sportsline Press Release) When the engineers and designers with ABT Sportsline intend to tune an SUV, you can be sure that the result will be an extraordinary vehicle. That has been the case with the Touareg, AS7 and Tiguan - and that will be continued with the new ABT Q5. The elegant crossover vehicle is by concept a premium model in the category of compact SUVs, but "such a wonderful car always spurs us to create something really special," says Hans-Jrgen Abt. The managing director of ABT Sportsline emphasizes that it is about "blending our philosophy with the character of the car." With the ABT Q5, this worked perfectly: The Allgu SUV is fast, beefy, sleek, extravagant, extremely versatile - and therefore evokes five wows.

2009 ABT Audi Q5-12009 ABT Audi Q5-2The ABT Q5 is impressing, harmonic and superior from every angle. The front skirt with the integrated underride protection finds its equivalent in the rear skirt, which, in a very elegant way, also hides the tow bar extendable for use. The mighty front grille, the fender extensions and the dynamic door strip attachments form a unit. The rear wing, the 4-pipe-rear muffler and the BR wheel rim in size 20-inch also fit in optimally into the elegant overall picture. The ABT Q5 is indeed a car for all occasions: No matter whether in front of a luxury hotel or a beer garden, this vehicle fits in everywhere.

The Q5 follows its bigger brother from Kempten, the AS7, suit: the "S" in "SUV" means "particularly sporty". A genuine ABT always has significantly more power, even more so when all four wheels are powered. The two diesel engines sparkle with energy: thanks to ABT Power, the 2.0 TDI delivers potent 190hp (140kW) instead of 170hp (125kW). The 3.0 TDI delivers the most powerful performance for the ABT Q5: with ABT Power S, it achieves 310hp or 228kW (Series: 240hp/176kW) on any terrain. Particularly impressing: its maximum torque of 610Nm. Also the 2.0 TFSI is suited perfectly for the SUV from Kempten: thanks to ABT Power, 211hp (155kW) are turned into sporty 240hp (177kW).

When a power upgrade is made, suspension and brakes, too, have to be adjusted to the increased power. That is why Abt is offering a fine tuned package for the Q5: suspension springs, lowering of the car's center of gravity or also the well-proven ABT Level Control, an electronic lowering for the CDC air suspension (Continous Damping Control). Regarding deceleration, the ABT sports brake system provides for a maximum of safety, which meets the increased requirements: the brake disks with a diameter of 380mm are strong enough for the fast SUV - and behind the 20-inch-wheel rims type BR or AR, they also look extremely good.

The ABT Q5 is going to be available within the first quarter of 2009.

Audi R8 Spider Spied

The convertible version of Audi’s R8 supercar has been spotted testing in Germany without a hint of camouflage material. These latest images of the test car reveal that the new convertible will gain a conventional fabric roof but misses out on the R8’s trademark aluminium side blades.
Other major changes for the new Spider that are expected to make it to production will be additional air intakes located behind the seats as well as a pair of safety roll-over bars.

Audi R8 Spider-1Audi R8 Spider-2The placement of the fuel filler cap will also be changed due to the missing rear pillars, while changes under the sheetmetal will likely include extra chassis strengthening. While the base model will likely stick with the hard-top’s 420hp (313kW) 4.2L V8 engine, there’s talk that Audi may shoehorn the 5.2L V10 from the S6 and S8 sports-saloons into a mid-level model and reserve the 5.0L twin-turbo V10 from the RS6 for a high-performance RS-variant.

The differences between it and the standard V8 model will extend beyond just horsepower outputs. The chassis has reportedly been modified to accommodate the extra power, gaining upgraded suspension, steering and braking systems. This particular test car is thought to be the top end RS version of the new R8.

Tell-tale signs are the exhaust pipe and diffusers, which are the same as those fitted to Audi’s other V10 models, as well as the new grille design. Onlookers even claim the test car had the sound of a V10 and not a V8.

Insignia Opel at the Ring Spied

The Opel Insignia has certainly made an impression since the staggered reveal of the sedan, hatch and wagon variants over the past few weeks.

Now the final iteration has been spotted prowling the Nurburgring during a stint of performance testing.

Insignia Opel-1Insignia Opel-2Whilst on paper, the Insignia may seem out of place of the world’s most infamous circuit; this is actually our first glimpse of the performance flagship OPC model.

No doubt hiding some new performance flare behind the duct tape, the OPC variant is expected to boast a new front skirt with bigger air intakes, wider sills and wheel arches, and a moulded rear lip spoiler.

Under the hood is a new turbocharged V6 power plant which should deliver over 220kW, likely mated to a performance version of the lesser model’s all-wheel drive system.

Chevrolet Matiz Spied

Judging from the big grins and thumbs up the engineers gave our photographers, they were very happy to see them. Not that we are complaining, it’s not everyday you get to see a glimpse of the upcoming “ChevroletMatiz development car.

Riding under various panelling, the new Matiz is currently undergoing some early testing in France. Code-named M300, a new, ultra small car platform will also underpin the next generation Chevrolet Beat and Spark.

Chevrolet Matiz-1Chevrolet Matiz-2This new platform actually has more names than we can keep track of. We’ve also heard it referred to as “Global Mini” and “GMDAT-M.”

While the Matiz and Spark should start production in Spring of 2009, the timing on the Chevy Beat still remains unclear.

2011 Jaguar XJ mule Spied

Jaguar is obviously suffering no ill-effect following the Tata takeover, with yet another test mule - this time of the new XJ - spotted in the US.

While the limited camouflage may seem to indicate this is nothing more than a subtle face lift - make no mistake, the next XJ is tipped to sport a radical new and daring look.

2011 Jaguar XJ -12011 Jaguar XJ -2The reason for this aesthetic overhaul, according to Jaguar’s chief of design, Ian Callum, is that the XJ model is selling in considerably lower figures than the more modern-looking XF.

The end result of what we see here is the underpinnings of the next XJ married to the existing model’s sheet metal, - with a few crude additions to handle the increased wheel base.

The underpinnings aren’t all new however, with Jaguar modifying the existing all-aluminum platform to re-use it for the code-named X351 which will make its official debut in spring 2011.

2008 Volvo V70 Review

Volvo has been building wagons since 1953, and has made the genre a specialty. If the Swedish automaker has a small presence in the general automotive marketplace, it is a major player in the wagon class throughout the world. Wagons are a minor sideline for most manufacturers, but they make a significant contribution to Volvo's income.

2008 Volvo V70 Hence the third-generation V70, the latest in a line going back to that 1953 PV445. If the name is the same, and the shape looks familiar, at least at first glance, nearly everything else has changed. Like its predecessor, introduced in 2001, the 2008 V70 is based on the S80 platform, but that platform was all-new with the 2007 S80. The new V70 is a touch larger, more filled-out in looks, and has a stronger structure, for improved occupant safety. A comprehensive list of standard safety features, including standard integrated rear booster seats, is augmented by newly-available once-upscale options including adaptive cruise control with collision warning and Auto Brake, the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), and the Personal Car Communicator (PCC).

Volvo's newest inline six-cylinder engine is the only choice under the V70's hood, matched to a six-speed automatic transmission with "Geartronic" manual-shift mode. There is really no need for anything else. In moderate everyday driving the 3.2-liter twin-cam, aluminum alloy powerplant works well, with the smoothness for which inline sixes are famous and a broad, flat torque curve, thanks in part to a variable intake system and both Variable Cam Timing (VCT) and Cam Profile Switching systems. Maximum power is 235 horsepower at 6400 rpm, with maximum torque 236 lb-ft at 3200 rpm. The ECU (engine control computer) and transmission both seem to be set up to maximize fuel economy, with the highest gear possible used in D and shifting under anything but wide open throttle far below the redline. No complaint about that, as even then it's quick enough for most operation. When more go is needed, move the shift lever to manual and mash the throttle.

2008 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the benchmark for luxury sedans. Completely redesigned just a year ago, the Mercedes S550 and S600 are superb automobiles. The S-Class cabins are among the most beautiful interior executions on the market today. These cars are loaded with technology yet the COMAND system is easier to operate than the systems from BMW and Audi. Underway, the S-Class cars are smooth, quiet, and powerful.

2008 Mercedes-Benz S-Class-12008 Mercedes-Benz S-Class-2The S-Class is made up of the S550 models, which come with a V8 engine, and the S600, which comes with a turbocharged V12. The S550 4MATIC adds the all-weather capability of all-wheel drive. Two AMG versions bring racecar performance to this big luxury sedan.

All of them boast quick acceleration and are comfortable and stable at high speeds. Performance goes up with the more powerful engines, of course. The S600 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in about 4.5 seconds, according to Mercedes, which is very quick indeed.

These cars handle remarkably well for big luxury sedans. They are responsive but not darty. The Airmatic air suspension system is tuned toward the sportier end of the spectrum. The Automatic Body Control active suspension option cuts body roll significantly, and you can really feel it working when you throw the car into a fast, sweeping downhill curve. And we found the Brake Assist Plus brakes spectacular in their stopping power and stopping distance performance.

The 2008 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is composed of the S550 ($86,700), the S550 4MATIC ($89,700), the S600 ($144,200), plus the S63 AMG ($127,000) and the S65 AMG ($144,200). The S550 models are powered by a 5.5-liter V8 and come with a seven-speed automatic transmission; the 4MATIC adds all-wheel drive. The S600 is powered by a 6.0-liter 3-valve V12 twin-turbo engine connected to a heavy-duty five-speed auto. The federal Gas Guzzler Tax adds $1,300 to the V8, $3,000 to the V12. The S63 AMG is powered by a 6.2-liter V8, while the S65 AMG features a 6.0-liter V12.

2009 Chrysler Aspen Hybrid

The 2009 Chrysler Aspen Hybrid includes running boards for easier entry. The SUV stretches more than 200 inches long with a 119-inch wheelbase.

EPA's assessment says the 5.7-liter Hemi delivers 19 miles per gallon in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. Not spectacular numbers, but certainly better than the 13 mpg in the city the 2008 Aspen reached with a 4.7-liter V-8. During my week of testing this large SUV, I was able to hit 26 mpg at times; other times, 18 mpg. Admittedly, on the high mileage days, the roads were flat and my right foot was in eco-drive mode -- though I never acted like those 55-mph imbeciles on a 70-mph highway.

2009 Chrysler Aspen HybridThe 2009 Chrysler Aspen Limited hybrid is not a vehicle without flaws. The interior still has a heavy plastic feel, especially the doors and dash, and comes with the second ugliest hood on a Chrysler vehicle. But it serves a purpose, and not every vehicle on the road today can say that. Some people do need a truck and the Aspen is exactly that: a big hulking truck. After a few days behind the wheel, I started to remember how nice SUVs can be.
SUVs bring out the Texan in all Americans

So before every hemp-wearing nut spills his green ice tea lemonade (no syrup) while in a hurry to send me a terse e-mail over his iPhone 3G about the evils of SUVs, let me tell you something: You're wrong.

The reasons for the big truck's decline is many people have finally realized they don't need a truck that can tow a mountain or scale it. Nor can they afford 13 mpg -- the city mileage of a 2008 Aspen with a 4.7-liter V-8. So can you afford 20 mpg? That's midsize car numbers in the city. Slightly better mileage if there's a strong wind at your back.

The 5.7-liter Hemi hums along on the highway on four cylinders and keeps a low idle during moderate acceleration. (The electric motors assist the engine when cruising at highway speeds, which is why the highway mileage numbers are slightly improved.) Press the accelerator hard and you can feel the combined 385-horsepower engine lurch the vehicle forward.

Automotive consumers are begging for high-mileage cars and crossovers, not better-performing large SUVs. There is a market for this vehicle, and those few customers will be pleased with it. But it's not going to be enough to pull Chrysler out of its current tailspin. The sooner Chrysler adopts its hybrid technology into Dodge Chargers, Avengers and Calibers, the better.

2009 Dodge Ram 1500

Dodge is known for bucking conventional pickup-truck wisdom. The '94 model polarized everyone with its brazen big-rig styling. For 2009, the Dodge Ram gets perhaps its most significant breakthrough yet: rear coil springs. That's big news, as is the 390 horsepower rating of the revised 5.7-liter Hemi.

But is class-leading power and a new suspension enough to lure more half-ton shoppers to Dodge's lots? With Ford and GM well entrenched in the pickup game and Tundra and Titan nipping at Detroit's heels, Dodge has to do better than good enough. And that's especially true in these, the hardest times yet for the full size pickup market. The verdict from down south? Dodge has created the smoothest riding full size pickup yet.

2009 Dodge Ram 1500 -12009 Dodge Ram 1500 -2The most-popular Ram 1500 engine should continue to be the Hemi. The 5.7-liter V8 gets "next-generation" massaging which results in 390 hp, a 13 percent increase over 2008's 345 hp rating. The big V8 now delivers 407 lb.-ft. of torque too, an 8 percent jump. Dodge says variable valve timing, a higher 10.5:1 compression ratio, re-ported heads, less-restrictive breathing and an active intake system, account for the gains.

The active intake system feeds filtered air to long intake runners when low-end torque is needed and automatically switches to short runners as the revs climb. The Hemi exhales though a free flowing, slightly louder exhaust. The large 4-inch exhaust tips are frenched into the rear bumper for a cleaner look. And all Hemis are backed by a five speed automatic.
The two Magnum engines are also refined for better power and economy and can run E85 fuel. Like the Hemi, the 4.7-liter V8 gets two spark plugs per cylinder and higher compression to deliver 310 hp and 330 lb.-ft. of torque. The base 3.7-liter V6 is rated at 215 hp and 235 lb.-ft. of torque and returns 20 mpg on the highway.

Four-wheel drive Rams come standard with a part-time transfer case but can be optioned with the automatic "on-demand" system. Both have 2.72:1 low-range gearing and are electronically actuated with a dash switch. In the rear, Dodge engineers chose a five-link system to keep the solid rear axle and coil springs centered under the truck. Compared to leaf springs, coils are more tunable and Dodge offers 12 different spring rates. The new suspension maintains payload and tow ratings (a maximum of 9,100 pounds) while shedding 40 pounds of rear suspension weight.

There are three cab configurations distributed over two wheelbase lengths. But the new Crew Cab model with a 5-foot, 7-inch bed is the biggest news. The Crew Cab increases Regular Cab legroom by six inches and adds in-floor storage compartments too.

Want more secure room in your Ram? The new RamBox storage system fills in the wheelwell areas along the inside of the bed with lockable storage. The RamBox runs the full length of the 5-foot 7-inch bed on both sides and can hold 7.4 cu.-ft. of stuff. That translates to about 250 12-ounce cans with ice. And yes, drain plugs are included. This slick system also includes a bed-divider and extender that collapses into the tailgate as well as cargo-rail tie-downs with adjustable cleats.

Holden Barina

Holden continues its competitive push into the value end of the light car market with a fresh new look and feel for the Barina 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks, plus the addition of side impact airbags across the range. Starting from $14,490* (Australian dollars), the upgraded Holden Barina hatchbacks represent exceptional value for money, boasting a 1.6 litre powertrain and refreshed exterior and interior styling.

Holden BarinaMost notably, the Barina 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks have been given a more dynamic body design, highlighted by a strong Euro-styled front fascia and rear end treatments. Inside, the interior is significantly upgraded and features an updated instrument panel, console and new fabric trim.

From a safety perspective, all Barina models including the the 4-door Barina sedan receive driver, front passenger and side impact airbags as standard. GM Holden Director of Marketing, Philip Brook said the latest Barina range offered customers choice, style and function at a great value price.

“With three body styles, striking exterior and interior design improvements, Barina will appeal to a broad range of customer groups. Add side impact airbags and the package becomes even more attractive,” Brook said. “Barina represents great value for money in a growing segment of the market that appreciates fuel economy and the convenience of a small vehicle.”

Barina 3-door and 5-door hatchback’s updated design is reflected in the strong signature radiator grille flanked by large curved and jewelled headlamps. Dynamic detailing includes sporty contours which flow from the bonnet to the A-pillar with prominent shoulder lines, rear roof spoiler and a rear bumper fascia surmounted by clear round tail lamps. The Barina hatch models also get a cleverly packaged interior characterised by the new instrument panel which features a matt chrome-trimmed four-circle instrument cluster.

The Barina range improves occupant safety with the inclusion of side impact airbags for driver and front passenger, which extend upwards to provide head as well as thorax protection and complement the driver and front passenger airbags already standard. Barina is powered by a 1.6 litre DOHC multi-point fuel injected engine that produces 76kW of peak power at 5800rpm and develops peak torque of 145Nm at 3600rpm#.

The 16-valve 1.6 litre powerplant returns 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres (manual transmission) and 7.6 litres/100 kilometres (automatic).

2010 Сadillac CTS Sport Wagon

Ten years ago, a sporty Cadillac wagon would have seemed, well, odd. After all, a front-drive 1998 Cadillac DeVille would have made an awful candidate. But that's the old Cadillac. GM's flagship marque has done an admirable job transforming its cars and its image from that of a maker of soft and stodgy rides, to a real import fighter. The timing is right for Caddy to take on the best sport wagons from BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. With the attractive, all-new Cadillac CTS sheetmetal as a basis to work from, GM's design team has created a car that, if we're honest, looks even better as a wagon.

2010 Сadillac CTS Sport Wagon-12010 Сadillac CTS Sport Wagon-2The mechanicals are essentially the same as the sedan's. That means you'll get a choice of two 3.6-liter V6s, the most powerful of which churns out 304 hp. And both engines are matched to a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual. All-wheel drive will be an option. We know that a 250-hp 2.9-liter V6 diesel is being developed for Europe too. And we hope it comes stateside to join the lineup.

The wagon rides on the same 113.4-in. wheelbase as the sedan, yet the wagon is 0.3 in. shorter. And despite the aggressive roofline, the CTS Sport Wagon offers 25 cu. ft. of cargo space. That's more than the BMW 3 Series wagon. There are new 19-in. wheels and a panoramic rear sunroof available too.

We'd like to see this wagon reach out to the fringes of the market. Perhaps the two-mode hybrid system could be adapted to work on this wagon. Even more exciting would be a 556-hp CTS-V Sport Wagon. Let's hope that one is in the works.

We do know that there will be a CTS Coupe coming soon, too—if two doors suit your needs better than five.

2009 Yes Roadster

A small boutique car manufacturer called Funke & Will AG opened its doors 10 years ago and produced its first vehicle, the Yes Roadster, in 1999. The firm sold 200 of the first generation of its scratchbuilt two-seaters before redesigning the car two years ago. Now, Funke & Will AG is making a push to sell its second-generation Yes Roadster in the U.S. through YES North America, Inc. The Yes Roadster, or Yes! as the company calls it, made its North American debut at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show on February 6. YES North America plans to announce a deal with a handful of select U.S. dealers by the end of February to begin selling cars in June. The company says it hopes to sell 50 cars in North America in 2008.

2009 Yes RoadsterTwo models will be offered, the Yes Roadster 3.2 and the Yes Roadster 3.2 Turbo. Both will feature Audi-sourced 3.2-liter V6 engines and transmissions feeding power to the rear wheels. The base 3.2 puts out 255 horsepower and is offered with a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission, also sourced from Audi. The 3.2 Turbo will have 355 horsepower and come only with the six-speed manual.

The company says the base model will get 24 mpg combined city/highway and can accelerate the car from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds. The Turbo model will get a combined 22 mpg and can make the 0-60 sprint in 3.9 seconds. An available $8000 Turbo upgrade package increases horsepower to 415 and decreases 0-60 time to 3.4 seconds. Top speed is a claimed 158 mph for the base model, 174 mph for the Turbo, and 200 mph with the Turbo upgrade package.

On the outside, the Yes Roadster looks like a Lotus mated with a last-generation Audi TT roadster. It features a cloth manual top, and a removable hardtop is optional. Underneath, it has a scratchbuilt aluminum space frame, a double-wishbone front suspension, and Brembo brakes. The total weight is just 1962 pounds.

Without options, the cars will be light on equipment. Standard features will include cloth upholstery, an alarm, remote keyless entry, power windows, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The Turbo model adds a rear spoiler and 18-inch wheels. The only safety features will be antilock brakes and a driver airbag.

YES North America's price list shows the following options: Sport suspension with adjustable damping, locking rear differential, 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels, an audio system, Bluetooth hand-free cell phone link, a navigation system, air conditioning, leather upholstery, heated seats, a dead pedal, stainless steel exhaust, a fire extinguisher, and a suit case—all at sky high prices. Buyers will be able to pick their own interior and exterior colors. The Yes Roadster 3.2 will sell for $77,995, while the Turbo will run $97,995.

2009 Audi RS5 Begins Testing in Death Valley – Spied

Not that the Audi S5 isn't fastest enough, but another 100 horsepower or so might make it the best coupe on the planet. Looks like we'll get our wish soon enough as spy photographers caught what looks to be an Audi RS5 testing in Death Valley.

2009 Audi RS5 -12009 Audi RS5 -2It has a more aggressive front end and a larger set of 265/35ZR19 tires too. The signature oval exhaust tips aren't there, but that's probably just a temporary attempt to confuse onlookers. Our hope is that those exhaust pipes are connected to the same 580-hp V10 found in the RS6 sedan. Expect to hear an official announcement by the end of the year.

Hennessey Challenger SRT600

Hennessey Performance is apparently excited that the Dodge Challenger is finally here. They now offer a myriad of performance upgrades for the Challenger SRT8 including naturally aspirated versions of Chrysler's 6.1L VEMI V8 that increase power up to 575 horsepower, as well as supercharged and turbo versions producing up to 725 hp. There's clearly a power upgrade for everyone, but the most impressive appears to be the Challenger HPE600 Turbo, also known as the SRT600, which Hennessey reports has ripped off a quarter mile time of 11.9 seconds at 121 mph. The company called the car's launch during the run "conservative", though it was wearing optional Nitto Drag Radial tires at the time.

Hennessey Challenger SRT600Of course, any big bump in power should be accompanied by equal improvements to the suspension and brakes, and Hennessey will also fit your car with a KW adjustable coil-over suspension, larger anti-roll bars, new bushings and unique StopTech brakes. The cost of a complete Challenger HPE600 Turbo package (including Hennessey embroidered floor mats but not the cost of the donor car, of course) is $74,950, though one can opt for just the engine upgrades and be liberated of only $29,500. In total you could be spending well north of $100,000 on a 725-hp Challenger if you find Hennessey's approach appealing, but look at this way, you'd probably be the only one.

Jaguar XF-R Spied - Video

The coming Jaguar XF-R has been caught in the valley of death. It was accompanied by a Jaguar XJ mule and shepherded by a fleet of Land Rovers charged with blocking the all-seeing eye of someone's Sony Handycam. Fortunately for us, they failed. The driver of this particular prototype XF-R couldn't keep his foot off the throttle, as at different points in the video you hear the growl of a big displacement V8 and the accompanying scream of a supercharger. Other than vents in the hood to let that 5-liter V8 breathe, the body modifications look to be exceptionally tame. With 500 horsepower, however, its acceleration should be quite the opposite.

2009 Trident Iceni

(from Trident Press Release) Trident Iceni nears production

- 200mph sports car reaps 70mpg

- Technology allows use of 100% biodiesel

Trident Performance Vehicles have designed and produced a two-seater sports car that can reach over 200mph, get from 0-60mph in under 4 seconds and deliver up to 100mpg*.

2009 Trident Iceni-12009 Trident Iceni-2Whilst city cars (MEGA City, Ze-O, G-Wiz) work brilliantly for people who live and work in a city, Trident represent those that travel on the M1, the M4, the M6 to get to work, people who live in rural locations and those situations where electric cars are not (for the time being) viable due to their comparitively short range. In the meantime, the Trident Iceni offers current technology that is available now which reduces fuel consumption and therefore reduces emissions.

It's a diesel sports car and if you're able to obtain any kind of biodiesel, this can be used without any invalidation of warranty, adjustment to the engine or affect on performance.

Their fantastic fuel economy is achieved through technology called torque multiplication and it can be applied to all diesel cars (the popularity of which is growing year on year versus petrol cars), buses, lorries and trains. It's available now, requires no further research and development and can make an immediate difference to the amount of emissions diesel vehicles produce. In short, Trident have the solution to what we're told is a huge problem.

So serious is the concern about carbon reduction, the Government affiliates itself with a number of organisations that exist to provide grants to people and/or companies that can contribute to or offer a solution.

*68.9mph at a constant 70mph was the first recorded test at Millbrook Proving Ground. The figure naturally improve at lower speeds – at 30mph, Trident's initial tests returned 108mpg. This is yet to be confirmed but they don't believe in quoting a figure for 30mph as this is unrealistic – unless you drive exclusively in a city.

The Iceni is a traditional grand tourer. With a full tank of diesel, you can expect to travel around 2000 miles without needing to fill up.

2009 Chevrolet Cruze - first official images

General Motors has yesterday finally released the first official images of its all-new Chevrolet Cruze, which will make its first public appearance at the Paris Motor Show. The four-door compact family car is set to appear in showrooms across all continents by early 2009 as one of Chevrolet’s key models.

Its boldly styled sweeping roofline, shallow rear-pillars and wrap around headlights compliment the restrained use of exterior trim giving it a clean, unfussy appearance.

2009 Chevrolet Cruze-12009 Chevrolet Cruze-22009 Chevrolet Cruze-3“Our goal with the design of the Cruze was to be bold, not evolutionary,” said chief designer Taewan Kim. “We wanted to take a big step forward, making a strong design statement for Chevrolet products around the world.”

Inside, the car features a twin-cockpit design, with the centre console ergonomically divided for both driver and passenger alike - a styling cue taken from various iconic Chevrolet performance cars. Three engines will be available at the time of launch - an 82kw 1.6-litre and 103kW 1.8-litre petrol models and a 110kW 2.0-litre common-rail turbo diesel.

Its introduction will strengthen an already impressive European portfolio, which saw a 23 percent growth in the first half of 2008.

“We are very proud that Europe is leading the introduction for this global product,” said Wayne Brannon, Executive Director, Chevrolet Europe. “Chevrolet has always stood for expressive value, and Cruze delivers on that promise like never before. It redefines value with its quality, design, materials and great style both inside and out.”

The Cruze is likely to fall under the Holden nameplate as the replacement for the aging - and bland - Viva model.

Mercedes-Benz SLC Gullwing Spied

It has been a year since the first “C197” was spotted testing in the States, at that time it was a cobbled together mule with several Viper parts bolted on. This time – with obvious gullwing doors – this would be considered an early or developmental prototype.

The “Mercedes Gullwing” has often been referred to as the SLC, but we’re expecting the production version to have a new name and quite possible be under the AMG brand.

Mercedes-Benz SLC-1Mercedes-Benz SLC-2While the details are sparse, the bright silver paddle shifter is visible directly behind the steering wheel. Whether this supercar will have six, seven or maybe even eight gears is still unknown.

We can see a strip of LED, daytime running lights along the bottom of the headlight clusters. There also seem to be additional LEDs in the top section of the headlight cluster.

Other details that pop out are the large cross-drilled, slotted rotors. Those large rotors will be stopping a set of Pirelli tires. We’re also pretty sure a large Mercedes star will be dead centre on the grill much like it appeared on the 300 SL.

The Gullwing is expected to be introduced at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, with a limited run of sales for a period of two years. Production numbers will likely be around 6000 units a year and should carry a price tag of several hundred thousand dollars. We’re hearing kilowatt estimates in the 400-500 range produced from a forced-fed V8, or maybe even a V10.

2009 Hyundai i20 Spied

Hyundai’s latest generation of cars have been given the highest praise by the motoring world. The i-series is set for expansion with the release of the i10 shortly as well as the car we have pictured here, the VW Polo-rival, likely to be called the i20. Expected to go on sale overseas sometime next year, the i20 will replace the ageing Hyundai Getz which has been on the market since 2002.

2009 Hyundai i20-12009 Hyundai i20-2Though we’ve snapped the five-door here undergoing mountain-testing in southern Europe, we’re pretty sure a three-door model will be available as well. Will the i20 come to Australia? It would seem very likely. Engine choices are still a guess, but we suspect a variety of petrol engines delivering between 50-80kW will be offered in Europe, plus at least one turbodiesel.

Hyundai Australia has been contacted for comment. Check back later in the day for more on the new Getz.

2010 Lincoln MKT Spied

Well, that didn't take long. Just a few days after Ford officials confirmed production of the 2010 Lincoln MKT crossover, our spies captured several clear images of a development vehicle. Judging by the interior shot, this crossover looks to be very close to production-ready.

2010 Lincoln MKT-12010 Lincoln MKT-2The Lincoln MKT is based on a Ford Flex platform, so it's no surprise the Lincoln will share the 270-hp, 3.7-liter normally aspirated V-6 engine found in the MKS on base models and have an optional 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 that utilizes direct injection and turbocharging to produce an estimated 340 hp and 340 lb-ft of torque. Expect a familiar six-speed automatic transmission behind either V-6. Front-wheel drive will be standard and all-wheel drive will be available.

You won't, however, have to worry about mistaking the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT.

Although a concept MKT debuted at the 2008 North American International Auto Show to mixed reviews, much of the concept's styling seems to carry over to production. Expect the MKT to keep the concept's face, distinctive C-pillar, and strong beltline. The majority of these features are under wraps, but it's easy to see Lincoln's new corporate grille through the front camo and the sloping roof of the MKT concept.

Expect to see a production 2010 Lincoln MKT at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in January. According to our spies, production could begin as early as the summer of 2009. Check back at Automobile Magazine online for more details on the Lincoln MKT and other future vehicles.

2009 Audi A5

- Base Price: $41,600
- Body Style: Coupe
- Performance & Efficiency: 3,197 cc 3.2 liters V 6 front engine with 84.5 mm bore, 92.8 mm stroke, 12.5 compression ratio, double overhead cam, variable valve timing/camshaft and four valves per cylinder. Premium unleaded fuel 91. Rebates & Incentives:
36 Month Finance Rate: N/A; 48 Month Finance Rate: N/A

2009 Audi A5New Audi Q5 combines Audi's trademark single frame grille with clean surfaces. Subtle fender flares hint at the A5 from some angles, and the roofline is one of the lowest in the segment. The Q5 is built off the same architecture as the new A4 sedans and wagons and the A5 coupes. That means longitudinal engines, and a Quattro drive system with 60 percent of the torque directed to the rear wheels in normal driving.

The longitudinal engines bit is important because that means the Q5 can run anything from an inline-four to a V-8 under the hood, like the A4/A5. For the U.S., however, the Q5 will initially be available only with Audi's 3.2-liter direct-injection V-6, driving through a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. With 265 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque, the FSI V-6 provides grunt enough to propel the Q5 to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds.

The Q5 features extensive use of high-strength steel in the body structure. The hood and tailgate are made from aluminum to reduce weight, and aluminum is used extensively in the suspension. The compact trapezoidal-link rear-suspension layout allows a low floor in the rear cargo area. The Q5 will come standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, but wheels up to 20-inch diameter will be available as options.

Though basically a soft-roader, Audi claims the Q5 is reasonably adept off the tarmac, capable of climbing 31-degree slopes, with a break-over angle of 17.5 degrees. Ground clearance is almost 7.9 inches, and Audi says the Q5 can handle water up to 19.7 inches deep.

The Q5 will be available with the usual array of Audi features, including the latest-generation three version of the MMI computer interface, power tailgate, keyless entry, Bluetooth hands-free phone, a Bang & Olufsen 505-watt 14-speaker sound system, and even a heated and cooled cupholder.

Modern McLaren F1 rendered speculation

For a while, the McLaren F1 was the fastest car money could buy, powered by a 500kW V12 good for a top speed of 362km/h. With a revival of the icon confirmed to be in the works, renderings have surfaced on a Slovenian website apparently of the next-generation McLaren F1.

Modern McLaren F1-1Modern McLaren F1-2In collaboration with Mercedes-Benz, the new model is expected to carry the same AMG V8 engine from the soon-to-be discontinued McLaren SLR roadster. The unique centre driving position could also be lost in favour of a more contemporary two-seater layout.

Details remain scarce, although among current speculation surprisingly the Veyron has not been mentioned, suggesting perhaps the Veyron’s 407km/h bragging right is not a performance goal.

However, like most early renderings this could be nothing more than the work of a talented amateur - only time will tell.

2009 Honda Fit Sport - First Drive

When Honda introduced the first generation Fit to the North American market in mid-2006, its timing couldn't have been better. The entry level hatchback appeared just as fuel prices in the U.S. were heading skyward. Ever since then, the Fit has been selling as fast as Honda can bring them in from Japan. The Fit (or Jazz as its known in some markets) debuted in 2001 and the second-generation model went on sale in Japan last fall. Honda showed the new U.S.-spec Fit at the New York Auto Show last spring and we had our first opportunity to drive it on the roads north of Ann Arbor, MI last week.

2009 Honda Fit Sport -12009 Honda Fit Sport -2As is typically the case with new models, the updated Fit has grown a bit (about 4 inches in overall length), but it's only about 44 pounds heavier than the outgoing model. Also in the usual fashion, Honda strove to increase the refinement of the Fit while not losing any of the fun-loving qualities of the original. In the process, it has had to deal with rising raw material and shipping costs while keeping the price from getting out of hand. Read on to find out if the spiritual descendants of Soichiro Honda have succeeded.

2009 Honda Civic

Honda introduced its new Civic for 2006 . With a broad lineup, which includes coupes and sedans ranging from the ultrafrugal Honda Civic Hybrid to the sport-themed Civic Si, the Civic is one of the best-selling cars in America, and the recent spike in gas prices has helped the Civic challenge the Accord as Honda's most-popular model. But recently the automaker's Japanese rivals have been fighting back, with an all-new Corolla in showrooms now and a replacement Mazda3 due next year. So to keep the Civic going strong, the 2009 version is getting a mid-cycle update with a host of small improvements featuring revised styling, an improved interior, new technology, additional safety features, as well as two new sedan variants -- the DX-VP and LX-S -- that offer customers additional choice when shopping for the range's low- and mid-priced models.

2009 Honda Civic-12009 Honda Civic-2When the latest-generation Civic first hit the market, many were surprised by its unusual styling, but the Civic's looks have proven a hit with buyers and for 2009 Honda decided not to mess with success. Changes are minor, including a new bumper that now incorporates three air intakes, a slightly restyled grille, and a new headlight color combination. Together these give the Civic's front end a slightly bolder look, while revised taillights now feature clear turn indicators and amber bulbs. All 2009 sedans also receive a new chrome trim piece above the rear license-plate holder, while the Si gets standard foglights. In addition, the upscale Civic EX, EX-L, and Si each sport a new set of alloy wheels.

Honda did a little more work on the Civic's interior, when compared with its minimal sheetmetal changes, notably in the form of more upscale trim options and additional tech goodies. While the automaker is sticking with its controversial two-tier dashboard introduced three years ago, all Civic sedans now feature a sporty three-spoke steering wheel, improved cloth seating surfaces and patterns, and matching trim on the door linings and armrests.

For eco-warriors who prefer a little luxury, the Civic Hybrid can now be had with leather and heated seats, along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and heated side mirrors. Nav-equipped cars feature a Bluetooth HandsFreeLink mobile phone interface, which can be controlled via buttons on the steering wheel, while the EX, EX-L, and Si gain a USB audio interface for an MP3 player. Adding to the Civic's already impressive set of safety features, VSA stability control also is now standard on all EX-L, Hybrid, and Si models.

2009 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Production Version

(from Bugatti Press Release) Bugatti expands product range

Molsheim/Pebble Beach, August 16, 2008 – The world’s most significant celebration of the automobile takes place annually in Monterey, California. This year, it will see some of the most elegant, exclusive, and valuable vehicles ever produced in over 100 years of motoring, with Bugatti set to play a prominent role. On the evening prior to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the highlight of the event, the marque renowned for impeccable automotive solutions, aesthetics and driving dynamics will unveil a second model to the world – the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport with a unique removable roof.

2009 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport -12009 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport -2The main challenge in developing the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport with removable roof resulted from the unique structure of the fixed-roof Bugatti Veyron. An optimum combination of rigidity and lightweight engineering ensures the monocoque passenger cell of the original model is extremely strong while weighing an absolute minimum – it is a central element of the vehicle’s structure.

As a result, the monocoque structure has been reinforced around the side skirts and the transmission tunnel. The B-pillars have been cross-stiffened using a carbon fibre support, and a central carbon plate has been positioned beneath the transmission tunnel to ensure the vehicle suffers from less torsional flexing than any other roadster.

In the event of an accident, this transfers the load from the A to the B-pillar, thereby dissipating impact energy. Furthermore, the two redesigned air intakes for the 16-cylinder mid-engine now feature 10-centimetre wide carbon-fibre elements to offer protection should the car roll.

Along with moisture-resistant, backstitched leather, a range of new equipment features has been added to the interior, including a reversing camera with 2.7-inch monitor in the rear-view-mirror, and the “Puccini” sound system with digital signal processor.

When the roof is closed, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport can reach 407 km/h, while speeds of up to 360 km/h are possible with roof off. Should it rain, an innovative folding roof stored in the luggage compartment can be opened up like an umbrella at any time. When this folding roof is in place, the car can travel at up to 130 km/h.

2008 Grabercars La Bala

(from GraberCars) La Bala is a low-compromise, from the ground-up, new car. It is built using an early model Toyota MR2 powertrain. The reality is that there are many other donor choices available that may actually be better suited to lightweight vehicle construction. At this point though, construction is far along and won't change in the original prototype. The idea is to make the car as inexpensively as possible and yet make it look like a million bucks and go like stink. I am doing this by thinking creatively and doing much of the work myself.

2008 Grabercars La Bala-12008 Grabercars La Bala-2What inspired me to build la Bala? Ferdinand Porsche, when asked about why he started building cars said, "I couldn't find the car of my dreams, so I decided to build it myself." Well, I simply have not been able to find a car sold stateside that combines light weight performance motoring with good looks AND low cost. Light weight, looks good, costs little and goes like stink... Can you name one? Didn't think so.

It seems to me that lately that production cars are really suffering from "feature-creep". Every year the manufacturer assumes that they have to add more "stuff" to last years model so that the people feel that they are getting an improved model. Just look at the Mitsu Eclipse or the Miata... They are perfect examples of feature creep. You can certainly buy an economical car, but it's a slug in every sense of the word. You can't buy an economical car that provides what sport bike riders get doses of every day; Big performance with bare essential trimmings. I just want a car that looks good, is extremely light, has race level safety features and goes like stink. And while I'm at it, it should get close to 40mpg around town.

I want a vehicle that feels connected to the road, that vibrates and gurgles and reacts to my thoughts. I want to create a visceral experience out of steel and rubber. I want to grin from ear to ear as I enjoy the beauty of a perfectly carved line up some back canyon road. Reason enough? I think so. Who designed and is building the Bala? This car is designed by me and is being constructed by myself - alone - in my 2 car garage on weekends and some weekday evenings. Every custom part has been designed by myself and then fabricated using simple hand tools. The chassis is my design, the suspension is my design, the body is my original design. I used the book "Tune to Win" by Carroll Smith as a guideline for the suspension geometry and with assistance from Alan Bertwistle. Alan has been a true inspiration and great help. Even though we are across the country (USA) from each other, he has always been willing to answer my questions with truly useful information.

You can find out more about the La Bala at www.grabercars.com

2010 Audi R8 Roadster Spied

It's hard to go unnoticed in Audi's R8, something that has become abundantly clear to us in the short time a Mugello blue coupe has been in our Four Seasons fleet. But what if you want onlookers to notice who's in the R8 as well?

2010 Audi R8 Roadster-12010 Audi R8 Roadster-2For that, it looks like Audi's Spaceship-meets-Gallardo will need to lose its top. Judging by these spy shots, the convertible R8 will feature a folding soft top and some additional exterior modifications.

The first thing we notice on this flat-black prototype is the absence of the R8 coupe's so-called side blades. Available in contrasting colors and optional carbon fiber on the hardtop, the panels have given way to larger rear intakes that now begin well aft of the doors. Both the front and rear fascias have been revised and feature fewer slats in their air apertures - those below the headlights feature two, and those under the taillights have three - which is in line with the semi-bonkers R8 TDI concept that Audi showed this year. The exhaust note will emanate from dual ovoid outlets instead of the quad tips found on the coupe. All of these changes could also carry over to the coupe as part of a mid-cycle refresh

Though the engine is mounted just behind the occupants in the current fixed-roof R8, the sound doesn't permeate the firewall as much as we'd like. This droptop version should cure that, sending the mighty V-8's song in every direction. We just hope the reworked engine cover doesn't muffle the symphony too much.

Rearward visibility will likely be improved in top-up configuration, since the rear window will be much further forward. With the top down, any blind spots should be eliminated, allowing the occupants to see out as well as be seen.

We expect this near-production R8 model will be introduced sometime in the fall as a 2010 model. And if Audi wants to keep the flat-black paint job on this droptop, we wouldn't mind being seen in it.

Audi R8 test drive ends with a swim

There have got to be cheaper ways to go for a swim, but one driver apparently couldn't find one. The 33-year-old Dutch man from the town of Woerden in the Netherlands went by his local Audi dealership to check out a brand spankin' new R8 supercar... and then proceeded to drive it into the nearest river. The driver was reportedly speeding – 80 mph according to police, but closer to 125 if you ask some of the bystanders – in a 50 zone when he hit a bump, lost control and skidded into a dyke. Although local law enforcement authorities are reportedly investigating the incident, nobody was hurt. The same cannot be said, sadly, for the car, which is reportedly in a repair shop where the dealer's insurance company will surely declare it a write-off.

Audi R8After Intersection magazine gave another Audi product the treatment by lowering it into a swimming pool in England – the same one that Jeremy Clarkson drove a Rolls-Royce into, by the looks of things – we can't help but wonder and worry if this isn't a developing trend. In the meantime, we'll do our part to remind the motoring public that although the R8 is an incredibly capable car, it is not a submersible Lotus.

2010 Pontiac G8 ST may get direct-inject V6

The Pontiac G8 Sport Truck was originally supposed to be powered only by General Motors' 361-horsepower 6.0L V8, but tough fuel economy standards and customer demand for fuel efficient products have conspired to change the General's plans. Edmunds Inside Line quotes an anonymous senior engineer at the General saying that the unique sport ute will receive automaker's 3.6L V6, as well. That's good news for fuel economy, but the better news is that the 3.6L V6 of choice will be the direct injection versoin. That will likely give the G8 ST the same 300+hp as the 2010 Camaro and Cadillac CTS. That should also make the base ST more appealing to enthusiasts and the average Joe, with more power at the pedal and a healthier torque curve. The DI version of GM's 3.6L V6 will also likely be available in the base G8 sedan for the 2010 model year, as well.

2010 Pontiac G8 STIt makes sense that GM would go with direct injection for the G8 ST, as the General has already promised the powerful V6 for the Chevy Traverse and Camaro. Putting DI in more vehicles will help drive down the cost of producing these more high-tech engines economy of scale while also giving customers V8ish performance with V6ish fuel economy. Keep in mind, however, that though a GM engineer was quoted, none of this is official word from GM, so plans could change.

Lexus to show LS460 AWD - Moscow Preview

The Moscow International Auto Show is shaping up to be a serious event. Audi is showing off the RS6 sedan, Mazda is bringing a new crossover concept, Mitsubishi will debut the redesigned Pajero Sport and plan on plenty of Lada love to spread around. Lexus is joining the ranks of other top-tier automakers showing their wares in Moscow with the unveiling of an all-wheel-drive version of its LS460 flagship.

Lexus LS460 AWD-1Lexus LS460 AWD-2The AWD system fitted to the LS460 is the same found on the LS600h, and includes a Torsen LSD integrated into the rear drive shaft that receives power from the 381 hp, 4.6-liter V8 via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. In normal driving conditions, torque is split 40/60 front-to-rear, with as much as 70 percent of the power being shoveled to the rear wheels depending on conditions.

Russia's affection for stately sedans is one of the reasons that BMW decided to launch the redesigned 7-series in the planet's largest country, and Lexus is obviously trying to tap into one of the world's fastest growing automotive markets with the introduction of the LS460 AWD.

2010 Hyundai Portico 6-seater spied

One of our many spy photographers recently arrived at this top-secret testing area at 3am in the morning, he told us his aim was to get some sleep till around 7am and wait for the cars to show up, but instead, he caught the very first pictures of Hyundai’s all-new 2010 6-passenger Portico crossover.

2010 Hyundai Portico-12010 Hyundai Portico-2First shown as a 2005 concept in Chicago, Hyundai is hoping its R-Class-like crossover will fill all the niches where Mercedes and Chrysler’s Pacifica failed. Flexible seating for the Portico means two rows of seating with seating for 4 or 6 – depending if the centre seat is folded down or upright.

With six passengers in two rows - the Portico will offer more cargo area than similarly sized vehicles. The Portico is expected to be offered with a V6, as well as with a hybrid powertrain, and will be built in Alabama.

Hyundai Australia has not announced any plans to bring the Portico here, however depending on its success in the United States, there is a possibility of this six-seater making its way to our side of the world.

2010 Cadillac CTS coupe coming to LA Auto Show

This past Saturday in Monterey, Cadillac invited a select group of journalists to see the production version of the CTS coupe. Naturally, cameras weren't allowed inside the Caddy tent to keep images leaking out ahead of the coupe's official unveiling this November at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

2010 Cadillac CTS coupe-12010 Cadillac CTS coupe-2However, a lack of pictures hasn't stopped InsideLine from going into detail about what the CTS coupe will look like when it rolls onto the stand in LA. According to the report, the coupe is virtually unchanged from its conceptual predecessor, with everything ahead of the A-pillars pulled directly from its sedan counterpart. The massive C-pillars have remained, along with the vertical taillights and steeply raked rear window. Thankfully, Cadillac saw fit to include a back-up camera to make up for the lack of rearward visibility.

Production will begin next summer at GM's Lansing Grand River plant, and while GM execs remain mum on engine choices, expect the same duo of V6s available on the sedan and sport wagon to carry over to the coupe, along with the CTS-V's 550 hp, supercharged 6.2-liter V8 later down the line.

2009 Toyota Corolla

The Toyota Corolla has always been arguably the most conservatively styled vehicle from a brand known for, among other things, its conservative styling. For 2009, however, the designers in Japan have breathed a little life into the Toyota.

2009 Toyota CorollaExterior styling varies somewhat across the lineup on the 2009 Toyota Corolla. ConsumerGuide notes that the "Corolla offers five trim levels for 2008 vs. three for 2008," and visual appeal ranges from virtually non-existent up to surprisingly sporty on the Corolla Toyota. Of the five trim levels on the 2009 Toyota Corolla, which Edmunds lists as "base, LE, S, XLE and XRS," the XRS is by far the most noticeable on the road. Autoblog calls the 2009 Corolla XRS "one of the handsomest pieces of sheet metal in Toyota's U.S. lineup," featuring "speedy-looking bodywork." All versions of the 2009 Toyota Corolla include what Kelley Blue Book calls "a trio of character lines" running from front to back, as well as a "low front air intake" that helps add "visual width below the Toyota signature mesh grill." Motor Trend finds that the new Toyota Corolla is "a longer, lower, wider" car than the outgoing model, which helps improve the car's appearance.

For 2009, the Toyota Corolla features two engine options, as well as several different transmissions that deliver acceptable driving performance and solid fuel economy. Powering every version of the 2009 Toyota Corolla, with the exception of the XRS, is Toyota's 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, which Car and Driver points out "has 132 horsepower, up from 126" on last year's Corolla. Edmunds finds that this powerplant "delivers respectable acceleration in normal traffic situations." All four lower-end models of the Corolla Toyota offer one of two transmissions, which Motor Trend lists as either a "four-speed automatic" or a "five-speed manual."

For the 2009 Toyota Corolla, Edmunds claims that the EPA estimates fuel economy for the 1.8-liter engine to be "27 mpg city and 35 mpg highway" regardless of the transmission. The 2.4-liter engine suffers a drop in efficiency, posting EPA estimates of 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

Rolls-Royce Hyperion by Pininfarina

Bugatti's open-top Veyron is expected to be the top drawer at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance (which kicks off on Sunday), but this Pininfarina-designed Rolls-Royce Hyperion may just give the Veyron a run for its money.

The bespoke masterpiece takes cues from the RR Phantom Drophead Coupe, and is also the first new car from the Italian design firm and coachbuilder following the untimely death of its then-CEO Andrea Pininfarina.

Rolls-Royce Hyperion-1Rolls-Royce Hyperion-2Rolls-Royce Hyperion-3Instead of a four-seater, the Pininfarina Hyperion is a two-seater, with driving position and windscreen pushed back by 400mm.

Elegant lines on the sides make for a slimmer sportier look, which is supposed to draw visual references to speedboats.

An interesting (and perhaps intriguing) feature is the installation of a gun rack in the front cabin for the owner’s hunting exploits.

Watch manufacture Girard-Perregaux has also gotten in on the act, creating a special timepiece based on the Tourbillon Vintage 1945, which can be detached from its bracelet and clipped on the dashboard.

Lamborghini 30.000 euros for an oil change

A rich arab customer paid 30,000 euros to get the oil changed on his Lamborghini Murcielago - not the car’s fault but that of its owner as the vehicle was sent all the way from the Emirates to the London dealership. 25,000 euros was needed for the air delivery, and 5000 euros for repairs. I guess when you can afford a Lamborghini, money isn’t really an object.

2009 Jaguar XF-R spied

Finally, some pictures of our favourite car at the moment, the Jaguar XF-R. Although Jaguar have been very tight-lipped about the car to date, these pictures prove the high-performance Jaguar XF-R is coming!

2009 Jaguar XF-R -12009 Jaguar XF-R -2Under the hood we could probably expect Jaguar’s 4.2-litre supercharged V8 which will then get upgraded to the 5.0-litre engine size – hinted by the four exhausts – to give a power of around 500 hp. Some insiders at Jaguar say the company will most likely just go with the 5.0-litre from the start.

Whatever the outcome, in a car that looks this good, the XF-R is sure to be a winner. The XF-R will be presented at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2009. Expect a comprehensive review (and video) of the Jaguar XF range soon.

2009 Honda Legend

Honda’s quiet achiever is about to undergo a minor facelift and power upgrade. This year Honda has only sold 54 Legends, but the 2009 model is set to increase sales. The Japanese company says the new Legend will deliver more power and torque, together with increased efficiency and refinement.

From the outside, there are 12 noticeable differences as well, starting with larger 18-inch allow wheels (245/45R18 tyres). Other enhancements include a new aluminium bonnet (less weight), new bi-xenon headlights and upgraded pentagonal grill, a new front bumper which encompasses integral fog lights and distinctive lower cooling air intakes, new rocker panels, new higher rate spring and damper settings, a new boot lid with integral spoiler, a new rear bumper, new tail-lights and a new exhaust treatment.

2009 Honda Legend-12009 Honda Legend-22009 Honda Legend-3The final enhancement is the integration of a new ‘acoustic windscreen’, which Honda says includes a thin film of butul alcohol between two bonded glass panels to deliver a whisper-quiet cabin. Under the bonnet sits the same V6 VTEC engine as found in the current Legend. However capacity has increased from 3.5 to 3.7-litres, with total power now at 226kW and maximum torque increasing to 370Nm. Fuel consumption has also come down, while power has gone up. Dropped from 11.8L/100km to 11.3L/100km.

The 3.7-litre engine is special in many ways, most importantly for being the most powerful production engine ever offered by the Japanese company. The power and torque is delivered to the wheels through an upgraded version of the five-speed Sequential SportShift transmission available in the MY08 model. The auto comes with sports mode and steering wheel-mounted paddle-shift controls.

The new Honda Legend will retail from $77,500 (only one grade) and will hit Honda dealers from September 1st 2008. Expect a review of the new Legend soon.

2009 Audi A6

(from Audi Press Release) A winner always builds on his strengths: That’s why Audi has again upgraded its luxury class A6 model. Efficient engines have been added to the drive-train lineup, with innovative technologies cutting fuel consumption by about 15 percent across the whole model range. An improved suspension and new high-tech assistance system give the driver even greater control over the car. And the new-generation MMI control system is out-performing itself. The revamped A6 will be launched in the German market in late summer.

2009 Audi A6-12009 Audi A6-2It’s the sportiest and most popular business sedan on the market. The Audi A6 is leading the Premium C pack – both in Europe and around the world. In 2007, Audi sold about 234,000 units, giving the A6 a 37 percent market share among its core competitors. Most of the A6’s sold were equipped with six- or eight-cylinder engines, permanent 4x4 quattro and a luxury assortment of optional equipment – all evidence of the high regard Audi technologies is enjoying worldwide.

Its design is emphasized by a range of bold new accents, perfectly articulating the A6’s strong personality. The single-frame grill, bumpers, air vents and fog lights have all gotten a facelift.

The optionally-available xenon plus, LED daytime running lights have been redesigned as horizontal strips with 6 LEDs each. Other options include Audi adaptive light, a dynamic cornering light system, and the high-beam assistant that automatically switches between the high and low beam.

An aluminum-colored molding traversing the sides emphasizes the A6’s dynamic contour. At 4.93 meters (16.17 ft) long, 1.86 meters (6.10 ft) wide, and 1.46 meters (4.79 ft) high, little has changed in the sedan’s generous proportions. The gentle lip on the trunk, integrated chrome strip on the bumper, broad diffuser and straight exhaust pipes are part and partial of the revamped rear end. The bipartite rear lights with LED technology have also gotten a new look: narrow and wide, they taper inward on the sedan. And there are 13 exterior colors to choose from, including five new ones.

The upgraded Audi A6 will be available in German dealer showrooms as of mid-October 2008. Starting at 34,200 Euros for the A6 2.0 TFSI sedan, Audi’s initial list prices have remained virtually unchanged, despite all the extensive innovations.

2008 AC Schnitzer ACS3 Sport BMW M3 Convertible

(from AC Schnitzer Press Release) The New Spearhead: The ACS3 Sport Cabriolet based on the BMW M3

The sun shines, the wind's in your hair and the engine note in your ears: almost no other vehicle on the road evokes such untrammelled emotions as the BMW M3 Cabriolet. Especially when the
road leads via AC Schnitzer in Aachen. The 309 kW / 420 HP V8 engine is (as yet) untouched, but in the end, extra sporting performance can be achieved in a different way, as suspension guru Manfred Wollgarten knows: "With our racing suspension set up on the North Loop, we've thoroughly mastered the physics of driving".

BMW M3-1BMW M3-2The car is an out-and-out eyecatcher from the outside: with its new front skirt and strictly rectangular segments of the chromed grille insert, the vehicle has a strong, muscular look. The sporting presence is further underlined by the carbon spoiler lip with optional aluminum braces. The power dome on the bonnet hints at the powerful 4.0 litre V8. It is flanked by two AC Schnitzer Bonnet Vents, which emit a greedy intake howl during driving. At the sides, the open-air sports car shows its muscles in the form of flexibly moulded side skirts which emphasise the wheel arches.

The latter are perfectly filled by the 20" Type V lightweight forged rims. Their slender spokes give a clear view of the 8-pot high performance braking system by AC Schnitzer which mercilessly reins in the thrust when required. A deceleration performance which the ACS3 rarely needs for cornering, where it behaves totally neutrally.

A carbon rear diffuser helps the vehicle hunker down to the asphalt. The perfect driving experience is rounded off by the acoustic qualities of the powerful vehicle, provided by the AC Schnitzer sports rear silencer with chromed tailpipes in "Racing“ design. The sonorous note of the cabrio is heard at its best in narrow road tunnels. If only the sun would shine a bit more often there!

And naturally AC Schnitzer maintains the motorsport atmosphere in the driver's workplace, with attractive and ergonomically designed aluminum elements for the gear knob and handbrake handle, pedals and i-Drive controller. A carbon interior trim and sports airbag steering wheels are available on request, together with velour mats.

Cadillac CTS Coupe interior spied

We have already reported earlier on spy shots of the new Cadillac CTS Coupe, however this time around our photographers managed to catch a glimpse of its interior.

The coupe version is speculated to carry the CTC namesake when it eventually hits production in May next year alongside the CTS sedan at the Lansing Grand River Plant in the U.S.

Cadillac CTS Coupe-1Cadillac CTS Coupe-2To counter the inherent poor rear visibility, the Coupe version will feature a reversing camera which is not currently found on the sedan.

It also deletes the traditional door grab in favor of a new touch pad set up instead.

The overall design closely mimics the concept on which it is based, right down to the centre-exiting dual exhausts.

2008 Hamann Mini

(from Hamann Press Release) Racy lifestyle package for the trendy buggy - HAMANN presents its tuning programme for the current MINI.

Already since 1986, HAMANN-Motorsport develops and manufactures products for the individualisation of BMW automobiles. Therefore, it is only consistent that the technicians of the Laupheim-based company also focus on the “small relative” in the BMW family and develop an extensive tuning programme for the MINI. The result: a powerful performance increase, road holding aerodynamics components, striking 18-inch light alloy rims and noble interior modifications in aluminium and carbon.

2008 Hamann Mini-12008 Hamann Mini-2For both, the MINI COOPER S and the MINI COOPER D, HAMANN offers powerful performance increase components by re-programming the serial Motronic. According to the ignition map optimisation, the Diesel-aggregate has 136 hp / 100 kW at 4,000 r.p.m. and a maximum torque of 300 Nm at 1,750 – 2,000 r.p.m. This equals an increase of 26 hp / 20 kW. The HAMANN technicians achieved an even larger performance boost with the petrol version. Instead of 175 hp / 128 kW, the COOPER S then has zappy 204 hp/ 150 kW at 5,500 r.p.m. and a torque of 300 Nm at 1,600 – 5,000 r.p.m. Accordingly also the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h improves by half a second. The maximum speed is approx. 5 km/h faster than with a serial motor.

The lifestyle design of the HAMANN aerodynamics kit also presents itself strikingly racy. The serial front skirt does not only profit from its optic enhancement, but at the same time, the lifting forces are reduced, leading to an increased stability mainly at high speeds. The entire HAMANN front skirt is an alternative. It produces output at the front axle and supplies the air cooler and the front breaks with even more fresh air. The HAMANN side sills give the MINI a more elongated and lowered look. A rear diffuser which was especially developed for COOPER S models extends the serial skirt downwards and turns the two end pipes of the HAMANN sport exhaust system skilfully into focus.

2008 Hamann BMW 6 Series

(from Hamann Press Release) Design and technology rejuvenation: The HAMANN tuning programme for the new BMW 6-series

When it comes to exclusively refining BMWs, HAMANN-Motorsport is one of the first addresses. Again, the Laupheim-based company gives proof to this by introducing its latest refinements for the new BMW 6-series. By developing an entire tuning programme not only for the coupe, but also the convertible, HAMANN-Motorsport renders an additional sportive and individual touch to the facelift already applied by BMW.

Already the design elements create this impression and increase the aerodynamics as well. The front- and rear spoiler reduce the buoyant forces of the HAMANN 6-series which has a significant effect on the carґs handling and agility. This is also achieved with an additional pair of side skirts which significantly calms the air flow between both axles. The roof- and rear spoiler also ensure the necessary surface pressure on the asphalt. Mainly on country roads with winding sections, the HAMANN-aerodynamic package unfolds its strengths and generates pure enjoyment of driving.

2008 Hamann BMW 6 Series-12008 Hamann BMW 6 Series-2At HAMANN-Motorsport, the individual wishes of our customers are also top of the list. This has been taken into account when designing the tuning package for the BMW 6-series. Due to the large interest in different optical programmes, our designers developed another aerodynamics package called EDITION RACE. This turns the BMW in an impressive sports car, as it consequently emphasizes the broadening components. New front wings, 4-part wing broadenings in the back and enormous side skirts transform the BMW 6-series into an automobile which looks like a race car from the German Touring Car Masters or other touring car championships.

But there is even more to the HAMANN sport tuning elements under the bonnet. When developing the 6-series programme, our technicians rather concentrated on evolution instead of revolution. Basically, the sport limousine has a good motorisation, therefore we put a special focus on the performance enhancement for the 630i, 650i and the diesel 635d. Adapting the motor management with up to 21 hp more and the powerful torque increase can be felt immediately when accelerating. Moreover, HAMANN customers can look forward to the Vmax abolition. This enables the 650i to boost the maximum speed from 250 to 270 km/h.

For more information about the extensive HAMANN tuning programme, please visit the web site www.HAMANN-MOTORSPORT.com.

2010 Cadillac SRX spied

Our inside sources tell us Cadillac is very close to officially debuting its 2010 SRX crossover, but they can take their sweet time now that we have these new spy shots of the Wreath and Crest CUV in nothing but some checkered tape. With all the baggy covering gone from this prototype, we can clearly see its styling closely mimics that of the Provoq Concept, which Rick Wagoner introduced at CES last January.

2010 Cadillac SRX-12010 Cadillac SRX-2There are a couple of areas where the realities of production have toned down the concept's flair, but the vehicle's overall shape and detail remains. Built on GM's Theta Premium platform, the new SRX replaces the old model that was larger and a surprisingly poor seller. It was surprising because the old SRX was an athletic CUV that seemed to offer on paper what buyers wanted. This new model appears to be a smidge smaller and will likely offer more fuel efficient engines and a smoother ride.

Vintage 1962 Chaparral 1 Racer is auctioned

Vintage race cars occasionally come up for grabs, but we can't recall the last time a Chaparral happened to change hands. Perhaps that's why seeing a 1962 Chaparral as part of RM Auctions' Sports and Classics of Monterey sale, scheduled for August 15 and 16, piques our interest.

Although the Chaparral name conjures images of Jim Hall's innovative designs, the Texan had little to do with the 1. The car was largely designed by Dick Troutman and Tom Barnes, both former Scarab designers who struck out on their own. By purchasing two cars from the duo, Hall unwittingly became a sponsor of sorts and his Chaparral brand was affixed to the car.

Vintage 1962 Chaparral 1 Racer Troutman and Barnes ended up building five cars total, with Hall receiving chassis number 001 and 003. The car you see here is chassis 004, originally sold to Chuck Jones, who lent the car out to Skip Hudson. Jones kept the car until the '80s, when a California real estate magnate bought the Chaparral 1 and had it professionally restored.

As it stands today, chassis 004 sports a 318-cu.in. small-block Chevrolet V-8 (good for 340 hp), a four-speed manual transmission, and independent suspension at all four wheels. Better yet, the car also carries current FIA/ACCUS certification, and is eligible for vintage race events.

RM expects the Chaparral to change hands for between $750,000 and $950,000. Given that it's possibly the only Chaparral of any vintage that'll be for sale in the near future (most of Hall's collection is currently in a museum), that may be a safe bet.

2009 Dodge Ram

Dodge has a tough road ahead when it comes to selling the redesigned 2009 Ram. Though fuel prices have indeed dropped a bit in the last few weeks, consumers surely still have cash registers ringing in their heads when thinking of large V8 engines and four-wheel drive. So, to ease the newest Ram into the market, Dodge has decided to lower its price a bit compared to the outgoing model while also adding some unique and heretofore unavailable content to the mix. The dealings will start at $22,170 for base models with the regular cab, $26,225 for Quad Cab models and $32,530 for Dodge's first-ever Crew 1500 models.

2009 Dodge Ram-12009 Dodge Ram-2Opting for a top-end Laramie Ram Crew 1500 4x4 will cost you $44,140, which is on par with other top-of-the-line competitors from Ford and GM. Engine options include a revised 390-horse 5.7-liter HEMI, which will allow the quickest Ram to make it to 60 mph in less than six seconds, while a 310-horsepower 4.7-liter V8 and an anemic 3.7-liter V6 with just 215 horses on tap brings up the rear.

Mitsubishi Colt to get Lancer's shark-nose for 2009

Following the market debut of the new Lancer and EVO, Mitsubishi appears to be preparing a mid-cycle facelift for its junior Colt hatchback that's sold in Japan and Europe. The photos, which were snapped at an apparent promotional photo-shoot in Berlin, Germany, indicate that the Colt will get the new face of Mitsubishi that incorporates the same style of shark nose from the larger Lancer, as well as a new rear end with a revised bumper and darkened taillights.

Mitsubishi ColtSources suggest that the updated Colt will make its debut at the upcoming Paris Motor Show in October, so watch this space as the car's unveiling approaches. As small, fuel efficient cars become increasingly popular with the public, we could see a return of the Mitsubishi Colt on our own shores in the not-too-distant future.

The sedan version of the Nissan Altima received a face-lift for the 2007 model year, and for 2008, Nissan has given it a sibling, the all-new 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe. The Nissan Altima Coupe carries the strong styling of the sedan one step further and boasts the same appealing interior design.

2008 Nissan AltimaThe exterior of the 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe is almost completely new when compared with the sedan version; as Edmunds writes, "it shares only the hood" with its four-door stablemate. The new bodywork gives the Coupe, which comes in either 2.5 S or 3.5 SE trims, a "masculine-looking" appearance, with "large fenders, big headlights and a cutting-edge design around back," according to Cars.com.

Road & Track reviewers agree when it comes to the rear design, saying, "from the rear three-quarter view, this one's a stunner." Despite the praise that many aspects of the exterior draw in reviews read by TheCarConnection.com, some criticisms also appear. Kelley Blue Book says that the distinctive rear "may prove to be the feature that people either love or hate," thanks to what Road & Track describes as the 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe's "bulbous nose," which makes for an "uneasy fit" with the "shapely, chiseled tail."

The interior of the 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe is virtually identical to that of the reworked four-door Nissan Altima, which is to say that it's much improved over previous Nissan layouts. ConsumerGuide praises the "large and legible gauges" inside the 2008 Nissan Altima, along with "simple to operate" audio and climate controls. Road & Track adds that "the Altima dash and door panels are more conventional than the [Mitsubishi] Eclipse's more organic forms, but all controls are well positioned," and "big knobs and buttons on the center stack practically reach out to greet you."

Bentlummer - What is it??

So has Bentley finally gone ahead and built that much-rumoured SUV it has been muttering about for years?

No, it hasn't. This thing, this assault on your poor innocent eyes, is - as you might have guessed - a Hummer modified to look like a Bentley. And painted gold. Very gold.

Bentlummer-1Bentlummer-2Why? We really don't know. Suffice to say it hails from that capital of car couture, Dubai, and that the owner is heavily weighing down one end of the Money-Sense scales. We'll let you decide which end.

We mock, but we've a horrible, sneaking suspicion that this might be the next big thing among the Premiership elite. Can't decide between a Bentley and a Hummer? Have both. Bolt an Aston to the roof and you're there...

DiMora Motorcar Natalia SLS 2

Of all the bits of vaporware out there that never seem to get any closer to reality, the DiMora has to be one of our favorites. The sheer ambition of it all involves independently developing and producing a $2 million super-sedan that would, we're sure, make the likes of Bugatti and Maybach seem downright ordinary. But first it would have to actually get built, and all we've seen to date are computer images and announcements on component and technical partnerships.

DiMora Motorcar Natalia SLS 2-1DiMora Motorcar Natalia SLS 2-2The latest to join the immaterial spec sheet of the fictitious DiMora Natalia SLS 2 (don't ask what happened to the SLS 1) is Barotex. The Californian company is developing a new material, similar to carbon fiber, but made out of volcanic rock. Complementing the Volcano V16 engine that would power the Natalia were it ever to be built, Barotex offers lightweight yet extremely rigid and flame-retardant construction.

2009 NICE MyCar

(from NICE Car Company Press Release) MyCar is a stylish, all-electric city car

Ј8,995 starting price, for Italian-styled, two-seat city car. Global debut on NICE stand at British International Motor Show, 22 July 2008. Storage space under the bonnet, storage space in boot.
Innovative options including removable roof and work n play / drive n play packages.

2009 NICE MyCar-12009 NICE MyCar-2Introducing MyCar, the all-electric city car that’s set to take the motor show by storm. It’s a two-seater, with a truly international pedigree; designed by Giugiaro of Italdesign, made in Hong Kong and on sale through the NICE Car Company in London come Autumn.

MyCar will start from Ј8,995 and comes with a two-year warranty. It is available in seven colour options, albeit every MyCar will be ‘green’. That’s because there are no emissions. It’s an electric car, so there isn’t even a tailpipe. Running costs are very low, roughly one fifteenth compared to a conventional petrol or diesel model. Depending on electricity tariff used to charge the vehicle, owners will pay around 2p per mile.

MyCar has a range of around 40 miles in normal city driving, easily sufficient for the majority of urban motoring. Top speed is 40 mph with re-charge time between six and eight hours. There’s no CO2 emissions which means no road tax. MyCar will also be congestion charge exempt and parking concessions are available in many London boroughs1 and in other parts of the UK. More on-street charging points will further increase its appeal.

Standard equipment for MyCar includes electric windows and mirrors, Radio/MP3 player, 14” Alloy wheels, remote central locking, Hi/lo and boost button and LCD multifunction display. It also has storage space under the bonnet, in the boot and in the glove compartment. Options include a glass roof or removable fiberglass version. MyCar can also be specified with 15” Alloy wheels, leather interior, cooled and heated seats and a boot rack. All option prices are to be confirmed.

Two innovative features are work ‘n’ play and drive ‘n’ play options. The first incorporates a forward-folding passenger seat complete with laptop dock, the latter includes bluetooth, sat-nav and upgraded audio. MyCar is made of fibreglass reinforced plastic on a steel tubular spaceframe with tubular roll-bar. It has disc brakes and independent front and rear suspension.

It is one of three all-electric cars that will debut on the NICE Car Company stand, N25 at the motor show. The NICE Car Company press briefing takes place at 14.15 but media are invited to come along at any time during the day to learn more. Those that can’t make it to the motor show can visit our newly updated web site at www.nicecarcompany.co.uk.

2008 Mercedes CLC-Class

Mercedes yesterday launched the latest addition to its line-up - the CLC-Class. Naming it the Sports Coupe, Merc has declared it an entry level coupe in the three-pointed star’s local offerings.

2008 Mercedes CLC-Class-12008 Mercedes CLC-Class-2In an insight into the demographic this car is aimed at, Mercedes say that this car satisfies the “discerning requirements of young drivers looking for an athletic car.” Proudly boasting that there are greater than 1100 improvements over the last Sports Coupe we saw in Australia, Mercedes is pushing the economy barrow, with a claimed seven percent reduction in fuel consumption from its supercharged four-cylinder - combined cycle is 8.4-litres/100km for the automatic. But it also says that power is now up, to a healthy 135kW from the 1.8-litre engine.

There’s also a new direct-steer system, which it’s claimed offers more agile cornering. Curiously, though, an automatic transmission is standard. If it’s supposed to be more sporty, wouldn’t the no-cost option manual have been a better fit? Not according to the company, who has gone with paddle shifters on the steering wheel, to maintain the sporty character.

Three models will comprise the line-up - the C200K Kompressor, C200K Kompressor Evolution, and C200K Kompressor Evolution +.

2008 Honda Civic Hybrid

The 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid shares much of its body design with conventional Honda Civics, the current Civic sedan looks futuristic compared to its predecessor, and the hybrid takes the look even further, with disc-like 15-inch alloy wheels fitted with low-rolling-resistance tires. Kelley Blue Book notes that other visual distinctions between conventional Honda Civics and the Civic Hybrid are "side mirrors with integrated turn indicators" along with "clear front turn signal lenses, mild trunk spoiler, small roof-mounted antenna and hybrid badging." Overall, reviewers tend to side with Edmunds, whose testers are "quite fond of the current-generation Civic" and its futuristic styling.

2008 Honda Civic HybridThe exterior of this hybrid-powered 2008 Honda can be described as mildly controversial, and the interior follows suit, at least in terms of the dashboard. Edmunds writes that the "digital speedometer and gas gauge are at the base of the windshield," and "some drivers find the two-tier display distracting," though "others say it makes quick visual checks of speed easier." ConsumerGuide also sings the virtues of the "two-tier instrument panel" where the "speedometer's digits are in driver's line of sight for viewing without taking focus off the road."

However, Car and Driver testers feel that the dashboard is "odd" and gives "the impression that a designer is trying a bit too hard to make the civilian Civic into a Formula 1 racer." Aside from the dashboard styling, Kelley Blue Book writes that, for 2008, Honda offers "a two-tone blue cloth interior" as standard, and Edmunds praises the "easy to operate" controls. One knock on the Honda Civic Hybrid's control design comes from ConsumerGuide, where reviewers find that "the navigation system takes time to master, has undersized buttons, and absorbs too many audio functions"; they also complain that "its screen is difficult to read in changing light conditions."

Porsche Cayenne becomes diesel

It has finally happened. Porsche Cayenne has gone diesel.

Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking (what a name, by the way) has confirmed that next year's Cayenne will be installed with a three-litre V6 diesel developing 237bhp and 406lb ft of torque.

Porsche Cayenne If that sounds familiar, that's because the oil-burner will be transplanted near-unchanged from the Audi Q7 - all part of the Posche/VAG group not-always-so-friendly partnership.

The turbodiesel will haul the Q7 to 60mph in 8.5 seconds and return around 27mpg, so we'd expect similar performance from the Cayenne.

Rather than investing in a new, expensive diesel engine, Porsche has instead ploughed its cash into developing a hybrid system, which should make its way into the Cayenne some time in 2010.

And if you're getting all het up about the idea of a diesel Porsche, just think: it could've been that five-litre V10 turbodiesel out the Touareg. We're not sure whether that'd be better or worse, really...

2010 Pagani Zonda F spied

A priceless supercar prototype was parked on petrol station with only a few small pieces of camouflage. While the badges were covered in black tape, there was no doubt we were looking at the 2010 Pagani Zonda F. Up front, this next-generation Zonda F will get an all-new front clip. At the back, the rear quarter panels have been re-sculpted to allow for significantly increased airflow.

The rear diffuser has also been redesigned and there is a totally new air scoop that sticks up from the middle of the engine cover.

2010 Pagani Zonda F -12010 Pagani Zonda F -22010 Pagani Zonda F -3Inside, we can see the “Zonda F” nameplate above several toggle switches. Other than a new shifter, we don’t see any major interior changes. This Pagani has absolutely enormous 335/30/ZR20 Pirelli Pzero Rosso tyres at the back and 255/35/ZR19 tyres at the front. Inside the wheels are equally enormous carbon ceramic brake rotors.

What power plant this supercar might be packing is a bit of a mystery. Pagani certainly wants to keep the motor a secret as the clear engine compartment panels were covered with black tape. Judging from the new, larger air intakes on this prototype, whichever motor resides under the cover obviously needs more airflow than the Mercedes AMG 7.3L V8 found in the current Zonda F.

There are rumors of the 5.4-Litre supercharged V8 from the McLaren SLR 722 or perhaps the bi-turbo V12 from the recently debuted Mercedes SL65 AMG Black series providing motivation for the Zonda F.

Whatever the motor, it should be good for 600-700hp. The Zonda F should start production sometime in the first half of 2009. If you want one, count on an MSRP of at least $1,500,000 AUD.

BMW 7 series first test drives

It’s time for the first test drives for BMW with its 7 Series (in the photo a 740i pre-series reserved for the press) which will soon arrive on the market with plenty of technology to improve driving pleasure. A few tests have been carried out on the BMW test-track at Miramas, the details below.

The guys from CAR have confirmed the agility and command reaction of the sedan, comparing it to a 3 Series; and on pushing the “sport” button gives extra driving feel, setting engine, steering and suspension response. The real ace up their sleeve however, is the rear wheel steering making for great cornering as the rear wheels automatically follow and react to what’s happening up front.

BMW 7The magazine says it’s a natural and satisfying driving feel for both passenger and driver, with the Series 7 feeling like a smaller car that what it actually is, forging new paths for bigger sedans. Clientele for this type of car is looking for comfort and the 7 Series guarantees it with sophisticated chassis and suspension giving great comfort whatever the road conditions.
ADSExport BMW X6 Worldwide

CarAndDriver gives the 7 Series the same praise as CAR on the driving feel, adding that the sedan had great balance and involved handling on a wet track. The guys at Automobile were also pleasantly surprised by the dynamic handling, despite the opulent and spacious interior, saying that when on-board you feel like you’re in a smaller car - more like the 5 Series. And setting the “sport” mode, like CAR, they say it’s even more like the 3 Series. For this category of car, the neutral balance, cornering grip and braking power are surprising.

The steering, in sports mode, is rapid and consistent and on the wet track the BMW 7 Series confirmed its behaviour as a sports sedan, tempting to let it drift if it weren’t for managing all that torque from the V8 twin turbo. They say it’s setting a bench mark in this category.

2008 Lexus LS 600h L

Some reviewers from around the Web feel the 2008 Lexus LS 600h L is less distinctive than its ultra-luxury competitors. “Park those high-wattage rivals beside the Lexus, and the modestly styled LS virtually disappears,” the New York Times proclaims. Most observe the opposite: “This newest iteration, however, is arguably more attractive than the S-Class against which it now competes, though it’s a close call,” ForbesAutos writes. “This big sedan has a clean, conservative, yet absolutely contemporary shape, accentuated by a forward-thrusting arrowhead motif carried through from door handles to the front and rear lamp units and even the large, unusual twin exhaust-pipe diverters low in the rear bumper.” Edmunds observes, "from the outside it looks identical to the [Lexus] LS 460 L," which it acknowledges is "a handsome car, having moved far from its unimaginative origin as a Japanese version of a mid-range Mercedes with more generic styling."

2008 Lexus LS 600h LAs for differences with the hybrid edition, Kelley Blue Book says this Lexus 2008 is "essentially the same in overall appearance as the extended-length LS 460 L sedan," but notes that it gets "several special touches, [such as] blue accents on headlamps, taillamps [and] badging." Cars.com says the hybrid LS "differs little from the LS 460 in its exterior appearance"; the most notable is that "aside from the model badge on the trunk lid, the word HYBRID appears on the trim near the bottom of the rear doors."

The interior of the 2008 Lexus LS 600h L is “near perfection,” Edmunds says, “in an ergonomic sense.” Its “Optitron electroluminescent gauges are both handsome-looking and effective,” and “the rest of the interior is just as brilliant in an aesthetic sense.” However, ForbesAutos feels the dash “has a riot of buttons and switches, some of them half-hidden, with sometimes-incomprehensible acronyms.” Amid the array of controls, Kelley Blue Book reports that in the 2008 Lexus "semi-aniline leather highlights the cabin, and leather trim extends onto the instrument panel, upper front doors and door armrests." Edmunds describes the interior of this Lexus 2008 model in glowing terms: "Beautifully crafted and comfortable interior...rich wood trim is complemented by perforated leather upholstery."

This 2008 Lexus' interior is not much different than its gasoline-powered relatives. Cars.com reports that the 2008 Lexus LS 600h L "shares the gas-only L model's interior appointments," but points out that "special to the hybrid is a power-flow diagram on the dashboard's central LCD screen...the basics are repeated in color graphics between the speedometer and tachometer."

Bugatti Veyron for £17,500 a day

Want to impress former friends at a school reunion? Why not hire a Bugatti Veyron – for £17,500 a day. For the price of a brand new 2-litre diesel Ford Mondeo, a St. Albans-based company will lease the 253mph Bugatti Veyron for 24 hours.

Bugatti VeyronAnd there’s no limit on how long you can hire the 1,001bhp Bugatti Veyron.

As a result it will cost £122,000 per week, £580,000 per month or £6.3 million for the year – enough to fund seven-and-a-half £830,000 Veyrons.

Which means the one of the Premiership’s highest paid footballers John Terry – who earns a reported £130,000 a week – could just about afford to hire the hypercar. But the leasing firm wouldn’t let the 27-year-old Chelsea captain hire the Veyron – as he’s not old enough.

To hire the Bugatti Veyron (similar to the one pictured), drivers must be aged between 30 and 65, be no taller than 6ft 3in or heavier than 18 stone, have no more than six points or made an insurance claim in the past three years.

As part of the deal, anyone who hires the Veyron at the weekend can get 300 ‘free’ miles, before paying £1.50 per mile after that.

The rich renter does get breakdown cover and fully comprehensive insurance – but is responsible for collecting and returning the Veyron.

The Bugatti Veyron is one of a host of luxury cars available for hire from leasing website Erento.

Other cars available include a Lamborghini Murcielago and Mercedes McLaren SLR (£1,500 a day) and Aston Martin DBS which will cost £1,995 per day.

MINI ends Cabrio production

With nearly 165,000 drivers around the world having a sweet spot for the MINI Cabrio, the BMW owned MINI brand has announced an end to production of the topless Mini.

MINI CabrioThe three models: the high-performance MINI Cooper S and John Cooper Works Cabrios and (which unfortunately never found its way to Australia) as well as the the MINI One Cabrio became an instant topic of discussion upon their release in late 2004.

The last Cabrio to roll of the production line (Plant Oxford) was a Cooper S Cabrio Sidewalk finished in metallic White Silver, a MINI collector in the USA will be taking delivery of the car shortly.

The biggest market for the car was the UK, followed by the USA. Other big markets included Germany, Italy and Japan. Australia also ranked among the model’s top ten markets.

Despite what the folks over at marketing and research might have initially said, some countries simply preferred the Cabrio more than others. For example in chilly Scandinavia almost twice as many people purchased MINI Cabrios as fair-weathered Greece. The same story repeated in Austria, where there are at least five-times as many MINI Cabrio drivers as in sunny Portugal.

The factory will now focus all of its energy on the MINI hardtop and the MINI Clubman.

Roger Goldammer - Official World Champion of Custom Bike Building

There seems to be a new trend in custom bike building, and it's one we're happy to see. The best designers are creating machines meant to be ridden and to perform better than anything else available, and this year's winner of the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building proves this. Roger Goldammer creates stunning designs, yet he doesn't let his creations sit in a corner collecting dust. Rather, his winning bike is a world record holder, averaging over 160 miles per hour last year at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Roger GoldammerThis year, official voting took place at the Sturgis Rally and was broken down into four separate categories. Goldammer won in the Freestyle class, the most prestigious award available, with his machine known as Goldmember. Equipped with a custom 960cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine using modified Harley-Davidson cases, a supercharger and nitrous in addition to its streamlined bodywork, Goldmember is simply amazing.

2009 Jaguar XK spied

Jaguar’s development ambitions don’t seem to have been derailed by its recent take-over by India’s Tata Motors - quite the contrary, actually.

This lightly disguised Jaguar XK mule was spotted testing on home soil recently in the UK ahead of the revised model’s official debut at the Paris Motor Show.

2009 Jaguar XK-12009 Jaguar XK-2Due to hit showrooms internationally early next year, the next generation will undergo a several styling and mechanical upgrades.

A revised front bumper now incorporates additional air vents below the head lights, whilst the redesigned rear also boasts new LED technology in the tail lamps.

The power-retractable antenna has also been scrapped in favour of a more discrete and streamlined shark fin which now appears on the coupe’s deck lid.

These changes will apply to the entire XK model range, including the performance XKR and the extreme XKR-R model which is due next year also.

While the engine range will remain relatively identical, underneath a retuned suspension set-up and recalibrated steering rack promise sharper dynamics.

The interior should also benefit from Jaguar’s new drive-select transmission interface lifted from the XF saloon.

Lotus Carlton - fresh news

Lotus is planning a successor to its cult-classic Carlton special edition model, according to Mike Kimberley, Lotus Group CEO.

The original Lotus Carlton was a project commissioned by General Motors, who at the time owned both Lotus and Vauxhall.

Lotus CarltonBeginning with the standard Vauxhall Carlton, Lotus boosted its engine displacement from 3.0-litres to 3.6-litres, with twin Garret T25 turbochargers added for good measure.

The result was over 280kW and a zero to 100km/h time of just 5.2 seconds - over a second faster than its German rivals at the time.

To follow in the footsteps of the original, imagine a Lotus-tuned twin-turbo edition of the VE Commodore - its every Holden fans wet dream.

However other sources suggest the Vauxhall Insignia will become the platform for the new model - let’s hope they are wrong.

- better agility as a result of electronic lowering, coilover suspension or sports springs
- dual oval tailpipes of stainless steel

JE DESIGN, previously well known for its modifications of models from the VW Group, is now including another brand in its tuning range. THE sports car brand of all time: Porsche. Thanks to its experience with upmarket SUVs such as the VW Touareg and the Audi Q7, it was an easy step for JE DESIGN to provide the Porsche Cayenne with a new outfit and give it a more original appearance.

2008 JE Design Porsche Cayenne-12008 JE Design Porsche Cayenne-2The JE DESIGN styling program for the Porsche Cayenne (957 model) comprises at the front end a spoiler that gives the SUV a significantly more muscular look, with a centre segment that is particularly effective when its bottom section is painted in a different color. The JE DESIGN component is a perfect fit, and integrates ideally into the rest of the design. It also includes LED daytime running lights, which not only enhance the looks of the vehicle but also crucially improve safety. Because "seeing and being seen" prevents accidents. Headlight masks ensure that the headlights no longer stand out with such dominance above the cooling air inlets. By means of this relatively minor design stratagem, JE DESIGN manages to bring additional sporty flair to the front aspect, since the front end also now seems lower.

Once you start a job, you have to finish it. Essential features for the harmonious look include the side sills, conveying an impression of "more meat on the ribs" and giving more character to the Cayennes profile.

And of course a facelifted Porsche Cayenne also needs a suitably elegant conclusion. This is provided by JE DESIGN in the form of an extended rear apron with diffuser styling, so that the individualized appearance of the Cayenne's rear is also more appealing. As in the case of the original apron, the JE DESIGN component also has room on the left and right for the exhaust tailpipes. As a replacement for these, JE DESIGN also offers its own dual oval tailpipes made of stainless steel, which fit perfectly into the apertures.

JE DESIGN offers the parts as complete styling kit (tailpipes separately). In a second step, JE DESIGN offers the kit including LED entry lights, each with five LED light units fitted in the right and left-hand door sills, plus a six-light LED unit mounted on the extended rear apron.

As for other models, JE DESIGN also offers the "Shark Attack" roof fin to finish off the look.

Aston Martin One-77 preview

Aston Martin has teased us today with a sneak peak at the company’s latest supercar, the One-77. Not much is known about this car, which has been kept under wraps, but what we do know is that it is set to turn the Aston Martin image on its head.

Currently recognised for making desirable (but heavy) grand-tourers and sports cars, Aston Martin has been secretly developing the One-77 for a limited build run. The difference with this car, is an all new chassis made from carbon-fibre, which along with aluminium panels will keep weight to a minimum.

Aston Martin One-77Also new is a 7.0-litre V12 which Aston Martin says will offer “exhilarating performance for a strictly limited number of discerning customers.” The name, refers to “One of 77″ as implied by its new website - www.one-of-77.com

The company says that the One-77 is “the ultimate creative interpretation of the renowned British marque.” With a price-tag said to be around the £1 million mark, the hand-built supercar is said to be very special.

A front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout appears to be used, and although Aston Martin is cagey about the details, CarAdvice believes the engine to be an enlarged version of the existing 6-litre V12 used in the DBS.

The transmission is also unknown, but it’s obviously going to have to be able to handle enough grunt to rocket the car from 0-100km/h in a mooted 3.5 seconds. Top speed is also projected to be over 320km/h. Right and left-hand drive versions will be available, with Aston Martin Australia confirming that an Australian spec car would be on the cards if there was sufficient interest (read: money put on the table).

The forthcoming Paris Motor Show seems to be the expected reveal of the car, and CarAdvice will bring you pictures and more details as soon as they come to hand.

Suzuki Maruti Alto will debut in Paris

Suzuki will bring its seventh-generation Alto to the Paris Motor Show this October, featuring stylistic and powertrain upgrades to compete with the best and brightest from the budget-oriented, compact class. Based on the A-Star concept introduced at last year's New Delhi Motor Show, the new model will be built in India by Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant, and will likely packing a 1.0-liter engine which should make Euro V emissions regulations a breeze to exceed.

Suzuki Maruti AltoExpect the new Alto to find its largest market in India, along with limited sales throughout Europe. For an economy car, it's a pretty decent looker from what we can tell from the two shots Suzuki's released ahead of the show, and we expect it will find plenty of buyers looking for a relatively cheap way to get around. Check the press release after the break for more.
