Ferrari 599XX details

Ferrari has released more detailed information on the Ferrari 599XX, the extreme track car that is helping the legendary supercar maker develop new technology for future road-going supercars. First seen at this year’s Geneva International Motor Show, a limited number of 599XXs will be available for sale to Ferrari’s most valued customers, but Ferrari will prepare and run the cars on behalf of their owners, enabling them to drive them at special events at Ferrari’s own Fiorano test track and at leading race tracks in Europe and the USA. Data gathered from these track days will be used to further enhance and develop technology for future frontline Ferrari models.

This includes reducing internal friction in the engine, faster gearbox operation, aerodynamics that automatically adjust depending on whether the car is cornering or going in a straight line, as well being speed dependent, and a new high speed adjustable chassis. New weight saving ideas are used throughout the car, including carbon fibre brake calipers.

While based on the 599 GTB Fiorano with the same transaxle layout and engine type, this prototype is an extreme track car. Ferrari’s engineers have carried out extensive work on the engine’s combustion chambers and inlet and exhaust tracts. These modifications, combined with the fact that internal friction has been reduced and the maximum revs have been boosted to 9000rpm, helped achieve the target power output of 515kW at 9000rpm.

Particular attention was also paid to cutting the weight of the engine unit components. This was achieved both by optimizing forms - as in the new crankshaft - and adopting exclusive materials, as in the carbon-fibre used for the intake plenums. A new gearbox shift strategy cuts overall gear change times to 60 milliseconds. The chassis of the 599XX uses an innovative electronic model called the “High Performance Dynamic Concept” which has been designed to get the maximum performance from the car by managing the combination of the car’s mechanical limits with the potential of its electronic controls. The mechanical and electronic systems work together to get the maximum performance from the car under extreme high performance driving, for consistent lap times. The aggressive handling has been improved thanks to the adoption of second generation SCM suspension system.

Track usage is also made easier thanks to the new “virtual car engineer”, a screen in the car that provides a real-time indication of the vehicle’s track performance. The 599XX’s aerodynamics were honed in numerous wind tunnel test sessions with the result that the car now boasts 280kg of downforce at 200km/h and 630kg at 300km/h. The front underside of the body is completely faired-in and the vents that channel hot air from the engine bay have been moved to the bonnet.
The 599XX comes with slick tyres (29/67 R19 Front and 31/71 R19 Rear) specifically developed to maximize stability in cornering and increase lateral acceleration. They are fitted to 19 x 11J wheel rims at the front and 19 x 12J at the rear.

2010 Mini Crossover 4x4 – spied video

Mini's new Crossover 4x4 is undergoing final testing ahead of launch in late summer 2010 – and BMW is plotting two different bodystyles, CAR has learned. As well as this practical estate, a new sportier concept is under development. Think a Mini version of the X6 and you won't be a million miles away.

The revelation means that the John Cooper Works badge is almost certainly bound for the production iteration of the Crossover. Sources have told CAR that the Crossover's four-wheel drive system and the availability of BMW's high-power engines meant a hot JCW version is inevitable. Sportiness is a central part of the Mini appeal, after all.

2009 Saab 9-5 spied

These will most likely be the last spy photos we see of the Saab 9-5 in prototype form as it prepares for its first public appearance later this year. The prototype captured here on the Nurburgring wears a substantial amount of camouflage although the production version is unlikely to waiver from typical Saab styling.

These images also reveal the much shallower rear roofline, giving the new 9-5 a more coupe-like silhouette - with the car taking many of its styling cues from the 9-4X BioPower concept. The new 9-5 is likely to gain some extra weight, with a greater length and height than the current model as well as a longer wheelbase, making it a closer competitor to models such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac STS and Volvo S80.

The prototype in these images uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine making 160kW, while a 2.8-litre V6 will be available in the European market with the US getting an even bigger 3.6-litre V6.

Saab 9-5 diesel model is also a given along with a hybrid model, with its first public unveiling scheduled for the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Zenvo ST1, First Danish Supercar – Video

1104 horsepower Zenvo ST1 is Denmark's first domestically produced supercar. A publication there, Bil Magasinet, has posted video of their test drive with the beautiful machine that can cross Denmark in under 20 minutes. Before we tell you about the video, we'd like to remind you of this car's amazing specs. Using a rear-mounted turbo- and super-charged 7.0-liter V8, Zenvo's engineers brought this car up over 1100 hp while producing an amazing 1430 Nm at around 4500 rpm. In just three seconds, you can bring the car from a standstill to 100 km/h. Figure out a way around the electronic limiter, set for 375 km/h (233 mph), and we're pretty sure you can avoid arrest on almost any highway in the world.

Of course, no car built in icy Scandanavia should be without limited slip differential. This car is no different, featuring a hydraulically-powered LSD. The driver takes control of the machine with a six-speed manual gearbox. The test driver's "woo-hoo" at about a minute into the video says all that you can say. Although the car is so powerful, he says the handling is, "completely undramatic." So easy to drive this car is, that despite the 375 km/h top speed, the driver says it is "almost like driving a small hatchback ..." Zenvo ST1 ready for its debut at Le Mans this summer.

New Jaguar XJ

Jaguar have just announced that an all-new Jaguar XJ will make its public debut this July. And the rotten teases in the Gaydon press office have released just this one bird’s eye view of the new saloon. Speaking at Auto Shanghai 2009, Jaguar Cars Managing Director, Mike O’Driscoll confirmed that the all-new XJ will go on sale at the end of 2009 – but will officially be revealed on July 9th in London.

It will be the first car to feature the next-generation of Jaguar’s aerospace-inspired aluminium body architecture.

All of Jaguar’s XJ ultra-efficient Gen III petrol and diesel engines will be available in the new XJ, including the already acclaimed V6 diesel and 510 bhp supercharged V8. There will be a choice of standard or long wheelbase models – as well as a panoramic glass roof highlighted in the first picture.

With the success of the excellent XF, It’s difficult to see what space the XJ is going to occupy in the Jag Pantheon. We’ll just have to wait and see how the final release looks, feels and drives.

But can there really be room for two completely different mid size luxury saloons from Jaguar?

In our humble opinion, the loveliest Jag ever to grace our roads is the incomparable XK 120, that was produced way back in 1948. Now that’s what we call a panoramic roof.

Bugatti Veyron Centenaire

The Bugatti Veyron will be celebrating 100 years of the company with the special version, Centenaire, seen in these pics. The limited edition of the supercar will be available in four different versions, each dedicated to legendary drivers of the Type 35: Jean-Pierre Wimille, Achille Varzi, Malcolm Campbell and Hermann Zu Leiningen.

The colours of the four Centenaire versions are designed to represent the nationalities of the four drivers with Bleu France, Rosso Corsa, British Racing Green and Deutsches Rennweiss. The four examples will make their debut at the Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza and will be identical to the initial proposal of the Bleu Centenaire seen at the Geneva show.

The Veyron Centenaire is particular distinctive for its body work, the rear view mirrors and shiny front grill, with LED front headlights. The wheels will be eight spoke alloys inspired by those of the Bugatti Type 35. The interior will feature the names of the four drivers stitched into the head rests, but all this exclusivity has its price: 1,600,000 euros to be precise.

Morgan 100th anniversary edition - Aero SuperSports

Morgan is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, a century in which, arguably, its most significant technical development was adding a fourth wheel in 1932.

In celebration of reaching the ton, Morgan has created this, the Aero Supersports. Essentially the roadster version of the Aeromax coupe, it was unveiled at the Villa D'Esta Concourse d'Eleganza in Italy. Though technically referred to as a concept, the Supersports is a 95 per cent match for the production roadster, due to arrive next year, says Morgan.

Based on the same ash-frame construction as the Aeromax coupe, the roadster features a pair of removable aluminium roof panels that stow in the boot. It sits slightly lower on its springs than the coupe, while the car's overall profile is 4cm shorter.

Morgan says the car, with roof detatched (and we're quoting verbatim here, honestly) will bring 'fresh air and the aromas of the seasons to the driving experience'.

The Supersports is powered by the same BMW-sourced 4.8-litre V8 as the coupe, putting out around 370bhp. In a car weighing just 1,100kg, that's good for a 0-60mph time of around 4.5 seconds.

Morgan plans to build 200 Supersports - just 100 Aeromax coupes went into production - at a cost of £127,000 a piece. That's rather expensive.

Good news, though, for retro-inclined Americans: structural changes to the car's platform mean the Supersports will pass the 50mph rear impact test, allowing it to be sold Stateside.

2010 Porsche 911 GT3 Posts 7m 40s Time on Nurburgring

A new season of ‘Ring wars may be brewing. Porsche's Project Manager for High Performance Cars Andreas Preuninger says the latest 911 GT3 has achieved a time of 7 minutes 40 seconds around the Nurburgring's Nordschleife.

Porsche test driver Walter Rohrl, who was piloting the car, was apparently slowed down by the presence of other vehicles on the track. Had Rohrl really been going for it "with a knife between his teeth" said Preuninger, his time would have come down by as much as two seconds. Furthermore Rohrl apparently did a 7 minute 45 seconds in a borrowed Ferrari F430 Scuderia. The time was achieved under the same conditions as the GT3.

As for the Nissan GT-R, Preuninger noted that Porsche's official line is that the 7 minute 54 second time it achieved with a US-spec unit in 2008 stands. Nissan said in May 2008 that the GT-R did a 7 minute 29.03 seconds at the German track in the hands of its chief test driver Tochio Suzuki. The updated 2010 GT-R is claimed to have done an even quicker time of 7 minutes 27.56 seconds.

The third member of this feuding trio is the Corvette ZR1 which has a posted time of 7 minutes 26.4 seconds at the Green Hell. Preuninger's remarks on the ‘Vette were only to say it's a cool car but it serves a different purpose than the GT3.

The new updated 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 was unveiled at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. Its normally aspirated 3.8-litre boxer engine produces 435hp (320kW) and peak torque of 317 ft-lbs (430Nm).

ASMA Design PhantASMA CL65 Wide Body

Although BSG's over, apparently tuner ASMA has other plans with it's PhantASMA CL65 Wide Body. Prepare yourself, because even with the 735 HP V12, it's a tour de force of questionable Mercedes tuning.

Yes, it's got a twin-turbo V12 good for 735 HP and 870 lb-ft of torque, yes it'll do 0-62 MPH in 3.8 seconds and top out at 205 MPH — the hardware isn't what we're in a fluster about, it's the horrifying bodywork they've wrapped over the mechanical marvel.

Calling this wide body CL a fug monster is like saying the sun is sort of warm. What did we all do as a motoring public to deserve this kind of thing? The terrible part is the majority of the mods look fine, it's that ghastly grille which ruins it all, ruins it hard. Someone take the sketching pencil away from ASMA.

Mini Airstream caravan

The Mini Airstream caravan will be presented at the Milan Salone del Mobile (furniture design) event, though it is designed for “California dreamin” beaches, surf and girls. The Mini caravan design is as original as it is superfluous, designed to show off refined liberty.

Danish brand Republic of Fritz Hansen was employed to redesign the interior, and features include waterproof materials and the removal of the rear seats to make way for a scuba set.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E-class Wagon – Spied

We've seen the latest E-class coupe and sedan, but Mercedes-Benz hasn't revealed the latest iteration of its E-class wagon. No matter -- thanks to our fast-acting West Coast editor and his Blackberry, we have some photos of the latest Benz wagon.

Engineers applied some light camouflage to this test car, but to no avail. There's no mistaking that Mercedes-Benz grille, although we're more interested in what lies underneath those padded hind quarters. It may be slightly obscured, but the disguise doesn't hide the rising rocker trim and the curvaceous rear fenders, both cues first shown on the Concept Fascination from the 2008 Paris motor show.

That show car, however, was designed more as a shooting brake than a familial mode of transport. We're not surprised that the Fascination's racy roofline has been nixed in favor of a more traditional profile, creating more room for kids, pets, and other cargo.

Likewise, the Concept Fascination's powertrain - a 2.2-liter turbo-diesel I-4 also used in the E250 Bluetec concept shown in New York - won't appear in production cars destined for North America. Mercedes-Benz plans on offering the next E-class wagon only as an E350, meaning a 268-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 will lurk underhood. While we wouldn't be surprised if a 4Matic model followed soon after, don't expect to see a diesel or AMG variant in the model mix.

Although we should see the final product in all its glory this fall (it's expected to debut at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show), the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E350 wagon won't arrive stateside until the summer of 2010.

2009 RDSport BMW RS35 Biturbo

(from RDSport Press Release) For those wishing to increase the performance of an already stellar platform, RDSport offers BMW RS35 Biturbo.

The first impression you get of the car is its lower, more aggressive stance courtesy of a Chassis Kit consisting of new custom-valved Bilstein struts, stiffer springs and anti-roll bars. The vehicle now sits 25 mm lower in the front and 20mm lower in the rear with a decidedly more stable ride. Filling the fenders are lightweight, 20 RD2 Monoblock wheels or the optional 20 RS2 multi-piece wheels, shown. Tires are P Zero Neros supplied by Pirelli, our development partner.

Engine performance includes electronic modifications to increase boost and optimize fuel and timing. A free-flowing intake and a larger, more-efficient intercooler help supply enough air. Exhaust gasses run through a larger exhaust that terminates in stainless sport silencers with quad tips. These modifications result in an increase in horsepower and torque to 414 bhp and 404 lb/ft more than the V8 powered M3!

The under hood area is finished with a blue engine cover with RDSport crest. These numbers are merely the result of a long development period including TUV homologation. Any tuner can offer a black box upgrade for the vehicle, but how many can say that their modification has been tested and can include the upgraded speedometer and wheels and tires that the homologation requires.

Bodywork is an evolution of RDSports signature Tornado aerodynamics. The revised carbon front bumper offers larger openings for better engine and brake cooling with an exposed carbon housing for fog lights. Deeper side skirts and revised rear apron with quad exhaust cut outs add to the aggressive look while a roof and trunk spoiler smooth out the airflow over the car. Interior upgrades include the RS Pedal Set in machined aluminum, aluminum hand brake cover, logo carpet set, the aforementioned upgraded speedometer with logo and RDSport crests in the steering wheel and shift knob. Each complete vehicle built by RDSport includes a vehicle ID badge and VIN specific build sheet.

2010 Toyota Prius US pricing

The redesigned 2010 Toyota Prius hybrid goes on sale in the US from late May with Toyota today announcing pricing will begin at US$22,750 - which in an ideal world would mean an Australian price tag of $32,560.

A stripped-down base model version will join the line-up late this year for just US$21,750.

The third-generation Prius comes with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine producing 73kW which combined with the car’s electric motor can produce a total of 100kW.

The US Prius comes in five trim levels and includes standard safety equipment across the range such as ESP with Traction Control and ABS.

The second model in the range, priced at US$22,750, adds push-button start, a six-speaker stereo system, six-way adjustable driver’s seat and seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag.

The most expensive trim level, at US$28,020 includes Bluetooth, heated front seats, an eight-speaker JBL system and 17-inch alloy wheels.

2010 Audi S5 Cabriolet

The four-seat premium convertible segment has become stagnant, but that's about to change. BMW fired a new 3-series convertible at its competition for the 2008 model year, and two years later, shots are finally ringing back. The 2010 Audi S5 cabriolet - along with its less sporty A5 brother - will be among the first to join the fight, closely followed by the Infiniti G37, Lexus IS, and Mercedes-Benz E-class droptops.

The sexy S5 cabriolet replaces the S4 cabrio, and since it's based on the gorgeous S5 coupe, it's longer, lower, and wider than the old car. Although the Infiniti and the Lexus join BMW in using folding hard tops, Audi remains faithful to fabric for several reasons. (Mercedes-Benz will, too, for its upcoming E-class convertible, which replaces the CLK.) Styling is the most obvious - cloth tops don't suffer from the bubbly proportions that usually afflict folding hard tops. Using fabric also allows Audi's designers to play with two-tone color combinations and different textures to give the vehicle more visual interest. Of course, there are practical concerns, too: a fabric top usually weighs less and takes up less trunk space when folded. It also helps to endow the S5 with a large cargo pass-through behind its split-folding rear seats and can be lowered in only fifteen seconds - while moving.

The A5 Quattro droptop, set to launch two months after the S5, will use a conventional six-speed automatic transmission with a choice of either a torquey 2.0-liter turbo four or a sonorous 3.2-liter V-6. A front-wheel-drive version will also be available with the 2.0T and a continuously variable transmission. The S5 uses Audi's new 3.0-liter supercharged V-6, which will be phased in as a replacement for the normally aspirated 4.2-liter V-8 that's in the S5 coupe. Producing 333 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque - but no supercharger whine - it pulls the S5 to 60 mph in about five and a half seconds. The menacing V-8 sound track is replaced with a Hoover whoosh - the price we pay for downsizing - but the forced-induction V-6 provides significantly better fuel economy with comparable output.

In spite of some serious performance chops, the S5 looks and feels best cruising at a more sedate pace. The lack of acoustic engine drama is easily made up for by the incredible 505-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system, and optional head-level heaters mounted in the seats ensure that you can enjoy top-down motoring even when the mercury plummets. As a comfortable, fast, and luxurious - not to mention gorgeous - cruiser, the S5 is a very powerful shot fired back at the BMW 335i.

VW Announces New Small Family of Vehicles

The folks over at Volkswagen sent us an interesting release today. The company has decided to produce their "New Small Family" set of vehicles, picking Slovakia as their ideal location.

Pointing out that four of VW's brands are currently in production in the Slovak city of Bratislava, Volkswagen chairman Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn said, "Our team at Volkswagen in Slovakia is ideally prepared to provide the flexibility required for the production of the New Small Family." VW has placed a €308 million value on the investment, with plans to create 1,500 new jobs. If the vehicles are produced at the existing Devinska Nova Ves plant just outside Bratislava, capacity there could rise to 400,000 vehicles per year.

This investment is certainly a leap of faith in favor of Volkswagen Slovakia. VW SK company rep Andreas Tostmann said, "I'm happy about the confidence that has been shown in the Slovak plant." TASR quoted him as saying, "We're well equipped to produce such progressive vehicles as new small family cars thanks to our qualified and motivated workers."

The other vehicles built at the plant include the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, Skoda Octavia, and Volkswagen Touareg. Nearly 8,000 people are employed there.

Presumably, these New Small Family cars are based on the Volkswagen up! concepts. The plant will initially be responsible for building new three-door and five-door models for Volkswagen, Seat, and Skoda, according to a press release. These cars should be available for purchase by 2011.

2010 Audi Q7 at Shanghai Motor Show

So far, the Shanghai Motor Show has played host to the wild and mild. On the latter, Audi unveiled the 2010 Audi Q7 to the assembled throngs in China, complete with a new nose, restyled rear and a few choice bits under the hood and inside the cabin.

The crown jewels on the Q7's refreshed fascia are a new set of LEDs that run from the top, around the side and then through the bottom of the headlamp housing. A reworked lower grille and fog-lamp mounts accompany a new hatch and more LEDs nestled within the taillights, while inside, there's more wood, some tweaked trim and a third-generation MMI infotainment system that (Audi-willing) will remain as intuitive as the current system. As for powertrains, the V6 and V8s currently available in the U.S. will carry over, but a new 3.0-liter TDI is coming, rated at 25 mpg and carrying a range of 600 miles when traveling on the express way. Sunbeam Tiger LSR concept

For the centennial of the original 1925 Sunbeam Tiger land speed record car, British design student Ryan Skelley has mocked up this sweet ride. We’re huge fans of the lines, notable wheel-separation and no-windshield look. Not to mention, this version is 100% electric.

While the original 1925 LSR had a V12 and hit 145mph, Skelley hypothesizes that the new concept would use lithium titanate batteries to power an electric motor and to hit 0-60 mph in 2.3 seconds and reach a top end speed of 160 mph. The range of the 2025 Sunbeam is claimed to be 800 miles, which like the other specs is Skelley’s theory. Whether or not the design can achieve those numbers is irrelevant in our minds.

217mph GTA Spanish hypercar

This is the GTA Concept – a 217mph hypercar built by little-known Spanish company GTA Motor. The sleek machine is powered by a V10 engine which develops 780bhp and 678lb/ft of pulling power. GTA Motor claim the concept will accelerate from 0-62mph (100kph) in less than 3 seconds.

That would make it one of the fastest cars on sale:
• Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 SV – 3.2 seconds
• Gumpert Apollo – 3.0
• Ariel Atom – 2.88
• Koenigsegg CCXR – 2.8
• SSC Ultimate Aero TT – 2.78
• Caparo T1 – 2.5
• Bugatti Veyron 2.5

Carbon ceramic 380mm brake discs supply the necessary stopping power. Power is sent to the 20-inch rear wheels through a seven-speed sequential manual gearbox or optional semi-automatic system.

Development began three years ago and with testing now complete, the first Spanish supercar will be launched at the end of April with production limited to just 99 examples. The GTA Concept’s official name will be announced at the car’s launch, possibly to give the company time to think of a Spanish word which hasn’t already been nabbed by Lamborghini.

2009 Novitec TuLesto - The World’s Most Exclusive High-End Sports Car

(from Novitec Press Release) There are many fascinating automobiles money can buy but its spectacular design, its uncompromising high-performance concept and its limited edition of just eleven cars make the new Novitec TuLesto the most exclusive high-end sports car in the world. The mid-engine racer is 204 centimeters wide and weighs in at just 1,260 kilograms. It is built by German automobile manufacturer NOVITEC in Stetten in Bavaria.

At the heart of the two-seater is a V8 engine with dual superchargers and a rated power output of 777 hp / 571.8 kW. Thanks to its carbon fiber and aluminum construction the coupe has an excellent power-to-weight ratio of just 1.62 kg/hp. The result is driving performance that only very few super sports cars can match: The sprint from rest to 100 km/h takes less than 3.4 seconds, and the NOVITEC TuLesto reaches 300 km/h after just 22.6 seconds. Top speed is more than 350 km/h.

The new high-end sports car represents NOVITEC’s first proprietary car and marks the company’s 20th anniversary. “With the NOVITEC TuLesto we transform our collective know-how from two decades of automobile tuning into an uncompromising high-performance sports car for eleven of our long-time customers from around the world,”says NOVITEC managing director Wolfgang Hagedorn. “The TuLesto offers an optimal symbiosis of exceptional driving dynamics and exciting yet aerodynamically efficient styling.”

Light-weight construction was one of the main goals from the very start of the project. The designers’materials of choice are normally found in racecars. The chassis and the integrated safety cell are made entirely from aluminum, making them extremely light while at the same time giving them extraordinary rigidity. The striking design of the sports car is the result of a cooperation between NOVITEC and the Italian design studio Luca Serafini Stile in Modena. The unmistakable shape of the TuLesto was created using state-of-the-art CAD and CFD technologies, further augmented by the use of the wind tunnel. The TuLesto is 462 centimeters long, 204 centimeters wide and has a height of 122 centimeters.

The spectacular curves of the fenders, the front apron, the shape of the rear and the smooth underbody with integrated venturi tunnel and diffuser were calibrated in the wind tunnel to create an optimal aerodynamic balance. The Fast and the Furious 5

After a massive opening weekend at the US box office grossing US$72.5 million and re-writing box office history, Fast & Furious co star Paul Walker, has confirmed a fifth installment of the franchise is a ‘go’. “With the way things opened up, Vin and I will be coming back. We’re making a fifth one, and we’re going to Brazil, that’s it” Paul Walker said on an LA morning radio program.

With almost all the original cast on board in Fast & Furious, the movie has smashed box office records with the largest April opening in history. The movie also took off in overseas markets too, with an Easter weekend gross of US$46.5 million and virtually guaranteeing more of those 10-second cars on the big screen.

“Fast” had already hit US$209 million worldwide and that was prior to openings in Australia, China and Italy, notoriously strong markets for this genre.

Four-Door Porsche Panamera

In a first-ever move for the company, Porsche introduces the four-door Panamera at this year's Shanghai Motor Show.

The legendary sports car maker is changing the whole idea of a four door sedan. People may do a double take when they see the first-ever four-seat sports car from Porsche called the "Panamera", just introduced at the Shanghai Motor Show in China.

The 2010 Porsche Panamera is Porsche's fourth model line and the company says customers will see an unprecedented vehicle concept, a gran turismo offering dynamic performance, elegance and luggage space - all delivered at zero to 60 miles and hour in under 5 seconds.

This is the first premium car with an automatically shifting double-clutch transmission to feature an engine start/stop system that saves fuel and reduces emissions by turning the off when it is not needed, such as sitting at a stop light, for example. The Panamera will be on sale in the United States this October.

2008 FAB Design Mercedes-Benz CL Widebody

Enough is never enough: This is the motto behind FAB DESIGN's extensive refinement treatment of the grand Mercedes coupe. The new wide body aerodynamic programm fits in harmony into the entire picture and gives the vehicule a more sporty appearance. The FAB DESIGN wide body front bumper forms a unit with the new wide front fenders and takes up the line guidance at the new CL. A big opening placed in the middle provides a lot of fresh air for the coolers.

The left and right side intakes serve a lot of cooling for the brakes. Despite the enlargement of the fender the harmony and elegance of the basic CL is fully preserved. The front fender sideopenings behind the salient enlargements act as an additional cooling element. The lightly overstanding sideskirts at the door bottom edge, make the CL look not only sporty but also dynamical and stylish. The sporty and dynamic looking rear fender with the intakes provides a lot of ventilation for a sufficent cooling of the rear brake system.

The sophisticated and unique design of the rear bumper convert the CL next to the efficent aerodynamic also a breath taking optic. The shape of the lower section of the rear bumper produces an excellent downforce value. The new shape of the four integrated slightly horizontal placed exhaust endpipes, is just another way to reflect the unique way of FAB DESIGN inspiration.

FAB DESIGN goes own ways also for the light alloy wheel. The 3-pces forged FAB DESIGN type 6 EVOLINE wheel fascinates through its own and athletically optic. 2009 Hyundai Nuvis Concept

(from Hyundai Press Release) The world will have the opportunity to peer into Hyundai’s future when the Nuvis concept makes its world debut at the 2009 New York Auto Show. The Nuvis is the eleventh signature concept car to be designed at the company’s California Design Center in Irvine, Calif. In addition to showcasing the brand’s cutting-edge capabilities, Nuvis also hints at a possible design direction for a future-generation crossover, blending attributes of a tall urban car and a premium utility vehicle.

Consistent with Hyundai’s pledge to lead all brands in U.S. fuel economy by 2015, Nuvis is powered by Hyundai’s Hybrid Blue Drive architecture, which uses breakthrough lithium polymer battery technology. In developing the initial sketches, Hyundai designers considered the interplay of natural, fluid elements with more rigid surfaces and structures to create the illusion of constant motion. Specifically, designers studied the way water splits across and flows around the hull and sides of a boat, creating a wake, or the way wind shapes a snowdrift or flurries through trees. The living power of these elements is reflected in the Nuvis’ design.

Hyundai’s all-new, homegrown Hybrid Blue Drive architecture helps define the Nuvis concept. Hyundai’s proprietary parallel hybrid drive system mates the already-fuel efficient 2.4-liter Theta II engine to a 6-speed automatic transmission and a 30kW (205 N-m) electric motor for maximum fuel economy.

Hybrid Blue Drive has an all-electric mode and a parallel drive mode, meaning that the wheels are turned by power coming directly from the gasoline engine, or the electric motor, or both together, as conditions demand. This parallel hybrid drive architecture will serve as the foundation for future Hyundai hybrid drive vehicles, starting with the next-generation Sonata in the United States. To maximize fuel economy, all of the Theta II’s major driveline and cooling system components have been optimized to reduce friction, while the crankcase has been filled with low friction oil.

To further reduce fuel consumption, the Theta II’s engine management software, which governs injection pressure, engine cycle timing and exhaust retreatment rates, has been revised. This control strategy assures that maximum efficiency is achieved during gentle acceleration, while greater power is immediately available during full acceleration. During deceleration, regenerative braking also comes into play to help conserve energy. To ensure that the engine runs at lower RPMs, the top three gear ratios in the transmission have been extended. Fuel economy is further optimized through the latest electric motor-assisted steering system which reduces power drain and low resistance tires.

2010 Camaro SS

Having attended school (that’s what they call University in the US) in Alabama in the mid-80s, I acquired a deep appreciation of American muscle cars, particularly the early SS Camaro, a favourite of those ‘good ole boys’ in the Deep South. While the Chevy Corvette was pure aspiration, the Camaro and Firebird, were within reach of the working class, or those few lucky students with well to do parents.

But the SS Camaro was lookrd like what a proper American muscle car should look like, but with a little more style and exclusivity than the rest of the hard charging V8 fleet. It’s a real pity that the moonshine running business had all but dried up by the 60s, as the factory tuned Camaro SS might have been a favourite of those bootleggers from North Carolina. These guys had a serious need for speed, when night after night they raced at dangerous speeds, sometimes with no lights, in an attempt to avoid the sheriff or various state troopers. The delivery car had to be fast and the driver needed to be skilled, but the cars were also modified to the hilt, in the quest for greater performance and handling.

Bootlegging ran highly worked engines usually with superchargers for that instant acceleration, while the extra weight of the sour mash whisky haul would require two sets of shocks. Had these boys been able to get hold of the latest 2010 Camaro SS, I doubt whether they would have needed to add as many modifications as was required in the good ole days. With an old school 6.2-litre pushrod V8, which is a really a detuned version of the Corvette LS3 engine, the SS Camaro delivers a thumping 570Nm of torque at 4,600rpm. Shifts are via a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission, which is understandably capable of leaving a substantial amount of rubber on the tamac from the 20-inch Pirelli P-Zero tyres.

The SS has been rightfully equipped with launch control, which is built into the “Competitive Driving Mode”. I suggest you leave this function for closed road activity, unless you want to risk the car being impounded in whatever state you might reside. This beast will rocket from 0-100km/h in a rapid 4.7 seconds, and you can expect to run 13 seconds flat, at the drag strip. While the auto SS is good for 294kW (400bhp), the manual equipped car gets 310kW (422bhp).

The US can thank General Motors Holden of Australia, for much of the development work on the car, as the Camaro is a shortened version of the Pontiac G8, with the same MacPherson strut front suspension and multilink rear set-up. But its reasonably heavy at 1,770 kg and the steering is said to be a touch light. Little if any criticism can be leveled at the 356mm Brembo brakes up front, which apparently get the job done in no uncertain terms. The Camaro lead designer Sang Yup Lee has captured the best of the classic 1968 Camaro SS in a contemporary package, leaving no one in doubt as to this hero nameplate.

Subaru Impreza STI

Subaru is throwing its hat in the ring again for the Nurburgring 24-hour race this year in the form of an Impreza WRX STI.

The Impreza STI (Subaru Tecnica International) will run in the SP3T class of the 37th ADAC Zurich 24 Hour Race, as it is officially called. Subaru's STI unit has used the Nordschleife run at Nurburgring, sometimes referred to as the Old Course, to test many of its vehicles including this latest Impreza STI, which will set out to prove its endurance mettle in the long-distance race, an event in which Subaru has participated since 2005.

To run in an endurance race, the WRX STI has undergone some changes to the chassis, with a stiffening of the body and other components, as well as the addition of a Flexible Tower Bar. The STI team that will run the race is headed by Hideharu Tatsumi, who also serves as the manager of STI's Vehicle Experiment Division.

The WRX STI comes with a 4-cylinder, horizontally opposed, 2.0 liter DOHC turbo driving the symmetrical AWD system. The car will be raced by 4 Japanese drivers.

Chevrolet Corvair

In the pantheon of unloved, some say infamous, cars, the Corvair surely must rank near the top of the list. Chevrolet Corvair always seemed just a bit too odd-looking for me, but I have something of a late-developing affection for it for a number of reasons: the engineering was innovative in a lot of ways, it was a radical departure for an American manufacturer, and it got what is, in hindsight, an undeserved bad reputation in terms of safety. The Corvair's supposed safety concerns and the resulting bad publicity didn't kill it off, but they certainly didn't help.

Like many, however, my first introduction to the Corvair was via Ralph Nader's book, Unsafe At Any Speed, which is probably the reason most people have heard of it. To get one myth out of the way, that book was not all about the Corvair; the first chapter was about the Corvair, however, and that pretty much sealed its place in history. Most reviewers checked out the first chapter and that was about it. Fairly or not, the Corvair's reputation as an unsafe car stuck, and these days if you mention "Corvair" that's probably what springs to most peoples' minds.

Most observers nowadays will agree that the Corvair was not, in fact, particularly unsafe compared to many other cars of the time. And in fact, the Corvair had a wide variety of body styles--including a pickup!--to go along with the sedans and coupes that most people are aware of. It was a neat car with interesting engineering and deserves much more positive attention than it has received.

Jaguar XJ hybrid

The Jaguar XJ hybrid plug-in is set to debut in 2011 with targets of 50 km running on electric power, 25 kilometres on one litre of petrol, and CO2 emissions at only 120 grams per kilometre. It may sound like utopian ambition, but Jaguar is intent on achieving this aim.

According to technicians, a hybrid version with electric engine is enough to produce the above figures. In addition, according to Autocar, Jaguar is also working on a “mild hybrid” Range Rover Sport, while the production model of the LRX concept will have a 2.0 litre TDI.

2010 Aston Martin Rapide first details

Aston Martin has released the first official details surrounding its upcoming four-door Rapide model which is scheduled to make its first public debut in late 2009. The Rapide is not only the first true four-door production sports car from Aston Martin, but also arguably the only model so far to successfully merge the four-door coupe concept into one stunning package.

The high-powered grand tourer boasts four individual sports seats, offering generous accommodation and luggage space together with thrilling performance thanks to the inherited flexibility of Aston Martin’s front mid-engined layout. From the outset, the Rapide was designed with no aesthetic compromise although this proved to be a much simpler task than expected with 2010 Aston Martin’s design language translating seamlessly to the four door format.

Signature brand elements such as the ’swan wing’ doors - which rise upward as they swing open - provide easy access to the rear seats, whilst the iconic Aston Martin bodywork flows effortlessly to incorporate the two extra doors. The Rapide is powered by an iteration of Aston Martin’s 6.0 litre V12 engine producing 350kW and 600Nm which has been hand built in Cologne, driving the rear wheels through a Touchtronic gearbox.

The car itself will be manufactured at a new production facility in Graz, Austria managed by the acclaimed vehicle manufacturer Magna Steyr and co-ordinated by a fully integrated Aston Martin team from the UK.

“Rapide will exceed expectations to deliver elegance and practicality in a form that will allow driving enjoyment and comfort beyond anything that exists today,” says Dr Ulrich Bez, “The Rapide will exist in a class all of its own, a true Aston Martin with the high performance and dynamic excellence that defines the brand, and a luxurious sporting grand tourer without equal.”

The last stages of endurance testing are now underway at the brand’s new Nürburgring Test Centre, with final sign-off expected later this year before a production car is debuted in September followed by customer deliveries in early 2010.

2010 Spyker C8 Aileron

Making its North American debut at the New York International Auto Show, the Spyker C8 Aileron landed stateside just a few weeks after its world debut at the Geneva auto show. Perhaps unfamiliar to most Americans, Spyker Cars from the Netherlands only started building exclusive premium cars in 2000, but the name has a long history as a coachbuilder dating back to 1875 and as a fighter aircraft manufacturer during World World I. And since the turn of this century, Spyker has introduced a number of exquisitely designed sports cars, and even competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

From the outside, the Spyker C8 Aileron styling is an evolution of the previous Spyker C8 Laviolette LM85 first shown at the 2008 Los Angeles auto show. While the Laviolette carried a propeller theme through most of the car, the Aileron emphasizes the jet propulsion age via the use of turbine-engine-shaped air scoops. Compared to the Laviolette, the Aileron is longer and rides on a wider front track for improved driving comfort and stability.

Power for the Aileron comes from an Audi-sourced 4.2-liter V-8 engine rated at 400 bhp and 354 lb.-ft. of torque. Either a Getrag 6-speed manual gearbox or a ZF 6-speed automatic transmission can be ordered with the car. The chassis is new, an aluminum space-frame design with suspension designed and produced by Lotus. The front and rear aluminum double wishbone suspension carries 19-in. wheels that are slowed by 13.8-in. front and 12.1-in. rear brake rotors.

The manufacturer suggested retail price for the Aileron is $209,990 with the manual gearbox, and $219,990 with the automatic, both excluding options. Expect to see a convertible version at this summer's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

Larger air intakes cut into the newly sculpted front fascia, large exhaust tips poke out of a blackout section in the new rear fascia and a re-sculpted side skirt brings the package together.

Like the S-Class AMG Sport, the CL receives two attractive wheel options, 19- and 20-inch versions with silver painted calipers sitting directly behind. If you're the type of guy who's all show and no go, then this is the ride for you. Pick it up in June along with the S-class. They're both sure to impress the ladies.

2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 Preview

Last month Chrysler confirmed that its Street and Racing Technology (SRT) division is safe from the company’s current budgetary cutbacks. Expect to see new models to come out from this performance section in the coming years.

The first of these could be a replacement for the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, which has been previewed today in this official teaser sketch showing a new version based on the recently revealed 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee that will likely arrive sometime in 2011. Power is expected to come from a brand new 6.4-liter, HEMI V8 engine rated at around the 500 horsepower and 500 lb.-ft. of torque.

Hopefully, this will be enough to allow the SRT8-prepped Jeep to cement its title as the world’s fastest SUV now that the pair of M SUVs from BMW will be coming out. In addition to the power transplant, the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 will also sport a subtle body kit, a lowered ride height, stiffed suspension, and chunky SRT 5-spoke wheels housing uprated brakes.

There will also be a new engine that will be called the 392 HEMI (in reference to its capacity in cubic inches) and is expected to first appear in updated versions of the Dodge Challenger and Charger in 2011.

Nissan GT1 GR-R

Nissan has given us a first look at its not-to-be-messed-with GT-R racer, set to compete in the FIA's GT1 class this year.

Looks mean, huh? OK, the paint job might be a bit Ford-tiger-stripes from the early 90s, but we'll forgive that. Check out that rear wing. Check out those arches. Check out those side-exit exhausts.

Nissan has ditched the GT-R's twin-turbo 3.8-litre V6 engine in favour of a naturally aspirated 5.6-litre V8, which puts out a mighty 600bhp and 479lb ft of torque..all to the rear wheels.

Nissan GT1 GT-R - which will be run by NISMO and Gigawave Motorsports - will make its race debut at the FIA Silverstone meet on May 3, and is likely to take part in three further races this year before a full campaign in 2010. It'll be gunning for the Maserati MC12s, Corvette C6Rs, Saleen S7Rs and Ford GTs. They should be afraid.

2009 Ferrari F142

Ferrari is preparing to unveil its new V8 supercar, codenamed F142, later in 2009. We still don’t know the name of the production car, but some alphanumeric combination between F400 and F500 are possible badges for the F430 successor, reflecting the mid-engined V8’s displacement.

Today’s F430 is essentially a rebodied 360 Modena, which dates back to 1999. Ferrari types will deny it, but lift the engine cover of Ferrari’s junior supercar and you’ll find F133e stamped in the engine bay; F133 was the codename for the 360 and ‘e’ stands for evoluzione, you see.

Ferrari is on record as saying a road car application isn’t likely before 2012 – but be in no doubt that Maranello is developing an F1-style energy recapture system for its showroom range. It’s slightly at odds with the light weight mantra, adding as it does 35kg of batteries on today’s F1 car.

Other high tech details on the new V8 will include the latest iteration of the E-diff, controlled by the mannetino, and standard carbon brakes. It’ll be built in the new Ferrari factory that started making the California – with new, more efficient and higher quality production promised as a result.

The new BMW tri-turbo diesel engine is based on the current 6-cylinder unit and will develop around 350 hp. This means the BMW X5 Performance Diesel that will be powered by the new tri-turbo diesel engine all offer decent performance with a low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions level.

Besides the new engine, the BMW X5 Performance Diesel will also be fitted with Start / Stop technology and a braking energy regeneration system.

The new BMW tri-turbo diesel engine will be available at first on the European market only, and will be gradually launched on the X6, the new 5 Series and the 7 Series.

2010 Chevy Equinox

Chevrolet announced the 2010 Equinox crossover will carry a MSRP of $23,185, including a $745 destination charge, for the FWD LS model. It goes on sale this June. Chevy expects its Equinox to have best-in-class fuel economy at 30 MPG with its advanced 4-cylinder, direct injected engine. It is available in LS, LT and LTZ trim, with available all-wheel-drive. Two new engines are offered, each with fuel-saving direct injection and variable valve timing technology. Vehicle highlights include:

* New 2.4L Ecotec direct injected I-4 engine estimated at 182 horsepower (135 kW), which delivers an estimated 30 mpg highway, 21 mpg city (EPA certification pending)
* New 3.0L DOHC direct injected V-6 engine estimated at 264 horsepower (190 kW), which delivers an estimated 25 mpg highway, 18 mpg city (EPA certification pending)
* Driving range of more than 500 miles (800 km) with both engines, for less-frequent fill-ups
* Six standard air bags: dual frontal air bags; head curtain side air bags and pelvic/thorax seat-mounted side air bags
* Standard four-wheel disc brakes with StabiliTrak electronic stability control and traction control
* Standard OnStar and XM Satellite Radio
* “Advanced” remote starting system that also activates the HVAC system and optional heated seats depending on the outside temperature

Inside, 2010 Chevy Equinox features attention to detail, including standard tilt and telescoping steering wheel, standard driver seat power height adjustment and power lumbar, and a number of storage bins: an oversized glove box, a closed storage bin in the instrument panel above the center stack, and closed storage under the center armrest large enough for a laptop computer.

“Getting best-in-class fuel economy and great storage for less than $24,000 is significant,” Peper added. “In fact, the starting price for this all-new model is $1,800 less than the previous generation Equinox.”

While the all-new Equinox carries a smaller price than its predecessor, the list of standard content is larger - including more airbags, power lumbar support, and 17″ wheels. Combine this added content with the improvements in fuel economy, driving performance and available features, and the value proposition improves even more with the 2010 Equinox.

New Ford Focus Styling

The Iosis MAX concept first shown at the Geneva auto salon is the first external clue as to the Ford’s global C-car—the nextgeneration Focus. Due for 2011, it will replace the two very different models currently sold in North America and Europe and provide the basis for Mazdas and Volvos,even though Ford has sold its equity stake in Mazda and might well be out of Volvo in the next year.

The Iosis MAX is a tallish hatchback. Ignore the insanely complex and expensive parallelogram-hinged door frippery, which is strictly concept; the car does provide some design clues. Its height is about halfway between the hatchback and the current C-Max, which sells in the very large compact minivan class in Europe. Ford insiders claim the Iosis MAX is neither a concept version of the next Focus nor the next C-Max. But the strong lower grille, with three horizontal bars, the graphics of the front and rear lights that stretch far along the sides of the car, and the rising beltline and tapering side glass DLO are all elements that will feature on the next Focus.

So too is the form of the body surfacing, which is less angular than on recent Euro-designed Fords such as the Fiesta. This is how Ford’s new-generation C-cars can share some design character with the U.S.-designed cars like the new Taurus. A key element of the new platform is powertrain adaptability.

The concept has a production-intent 180-horse, 1.6-liter four-cylinder Ecoboost engine. It features an idle-stop system with intelligent alternator (charges aggresively when coasting and minimally under acceleration) and mates to a six-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission. Ford will progressively roll out this powertrain to replace its larger-displacement gasoline fourcylinder versions from 2010 and claims it will post a 20-percent economy improvement. Besides Ecoboost, the platform has been engineered for diesel, gasoline-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and pure electric powertrains.

Toyota Scion iQ Concept Tests

NEW YORK – Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc.’s Scion brand unveils the iQ concept here, but the youth-oriented nameplate’s top executive says it would take at least a year to turn it into a production entry for the emerging micro-subcompact-car segment.

“This could drive off the stage,” Jack Hollis, vice-president-Scion, says of the concept model. “We are still looking at it from a concept standpoint. But we’d love to see Scion expand from the current three products, and this might be the way to go,” he tells Ward’s after the iQ concept’s introduction at the auto show here.

Scion iQ would represent a long-discussed fourth vehicle for the brand’s lineup, which now consists of the xD subcompact, boxy xB cross/utility vehicle and tC sport coupe. Toyota confirmed to Ward’s earlier this year the New York concept would be a new model and not replace an existing one.

While the Toyota iQ has been sold in Japan since November and in Europe since December, it would take the auto maker at least a year to homologate its emissions and crashworthiness to stricter U.S. standards.

“We’d have to do some extra engineering, but I would say we’ve a got a good starting point, Hollis says. “In Japan and Europe, (the iQ) is at five stars (crashworthiness).”

Toyota also must figure out how the iQ would fit into a segment that currently has just one other entry, Smart USA’s Fortwo. “With this concept, we think we’ve put some things in it that this segment is looking for,” Hollis says.

The 10-ft. (3-m) long iQ concept also experiments with a rear-seating area accommodating one adult and one child, or a pet or small package. The rear seats fold flat, and the rear-seat cushion includes a small storage space underneath.
Uniquely designed air-conditioning unit increases front-passenger roominess.

Hollis says a newly engineered, compact air-conditioning unit behind the center front console opens up front-passenger legroom. And instead of a glove box, the concept includes a detachable “glove bag.”

The iQ concept rides on a 79-in. (200-cm) wheelbase and measures 71.4 ins. (181.4 cm) wide. A set of 18-in. wheels barely squeeze into the wheel wells and are pushed to the very corners of the car for a surefooted look. The iQ concept also features nine airbags, including a first-ever rear-window curtain airbag.

Hollis expects a production-version of the iQ concept would achieve between 35-45 mpg (6.7-5.2 L/100 km), saying a closer approximation requires more research into possible powertrains Toyota might use. In Japan and Europe, the production iQ uses both 1.0L and 1.1L gasoline engines, as well as a diesel mill.

2010 Kia Forte coupe

Kia has announced its first-ever two-door coupe passenger car at the 2009 NYIAS. The Koup is part of the Forte range that replaces the Spectra model in the US. The new Forte sedan made its US debut at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show. The Forte Koup's design is based on the KOUP Concept which was shown at the 2008 NYIAS.

Styling details of note include wrap-around headlights, the aggressive air intakes, dual tailpipes and a rear diffuser. Two trim levels on offer are the EX and SX. The EX is the standard Forte Koup and it arrives with features like a 2.0-litre 156hp (115kW) and 144 pound-feet engine with Continuously Variable Valve Timing, a 5-speed manual or an optional 4-speed automatic transmission and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The higher-spec SX has a 2.4-litre straight-four motor with 173hp (127kW) and 168 pound-feet of torque. It returns 22mpg in city driving and 32mpg under highway conditions when mated to the 6-speed manual.

Kia says the body achieves high torsional stiffness which is good news for those looking for more than just straight line speed. More good news for the feisty driver is that the suspension system is sport-tuned to give a firmer ride. To balance performance with safety the FWD Koup has ABS brakes, electronic stability control and more than four airbags.

Some of the creature comforts listed are Bluetooth connectivity, iPod and USB auxiliary inputs, a standard six-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system and steering-wheel mounted audio controls. SIRIUS Satellite Radio capabilities are part of the music player and come with a free three-month subscription to the service.

2010 Mercedes Benz S-Class

In the 2010 S-Class, Mercedes-Benz has improved the renowned safety level even further with a unique combination of innovative camera and radar-based driver assistance systems. These include Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and the PRE-SAFE® brake system linked to the proximity regulating radar, which intervenes autonomously before an impending rear-end collision and acts like an invisible crumple zone. Other innovations in the 2010 S-Class include the ATTENTION ASSIST driver drowsiness monitor and Active Body Control with automatic crosswind stabilization.

The new S400 HYBRID is also celebrating its debut. As the first series-production Mercedes-Benz passenger car with hybrid drive, this S-Class model is the world's most economical luxury car with a gasoline engine. With 270,000 units sold world-wide since its launch, the W 221-series S-Class is the world's most successful luxury sedan, and seamlessly continues the success story of the flagship model in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. Since 1951, when the model 220 began the direct lineage of the S-Class, Mercedes-Benz has delivered around 3.3 million passenger cars from this model series to customers.

The U.S. line-up includes the S400 HYBRID, the 382-hp V8-powered S550 and all-wheel-drive S550 4MATIC as well as the high-performance 518-hp S63 AMG. V12 offerings include the 510-hp S600 and the top-of-the-line 604-hp S65 AMG. The 2010 S-Class will be in U.S. showrooms beginning in August.

An absolutely unique combination of ultra-modern assistance and protection systems is available for the 2010 S-Class. Many of these systems are also available for the new E-Class, which debuts this summer. The new assistance systems turn the models in the E and S-Class into "intelligent" partners for their driver. The car is able to "see", "feel", respond reflexively and act autonomously to prevent accidents or mitigate their effects. Mercedes-Benz also uses cameras in these systems - these are able to look well ahead, monitor the car's surroundings and interpret typically critical situations. One example is the optional Adaptive Highbeam Assist. This system recognizes oncoming or leading vehicles and then controls the headlamps to ensure the best possible beam range without dazzling other drivers on the road.

The Sindelfingen-based engineers have also developed Night View Assist further – Night View Assist PLUS is equipped with a special pedestrian detection function: as soon as the system detects pedestrians ahead of the car, they are highlighted on the display to make it easier for the driver to see them.

With this work, MTM confirms its love for details. As apart from the large-scale paint of the aluminium body, the internationally successful car refiner also painted areas in the engine compartment and has left further accents all over the car. Therefore, not only the colouring is unique, but also the manufacture.

On all four black brake callipers and on the black fuel cap, there is a green “R8” nameplate. The ultra-light MTM Bimoto light alloy wheels measuring 9x20 and 11x20 inches in glossy black, show the green nameplate “MTM forged” on one spoke per wheel and therefore refer to the high-quality forged technology of the rim. In the interior, the exciting car colour repeats at the seams of the suede MTM steering wheel and the “Quattro” nameplate on the glove department flap. Also, the “R8” logo on the gear-shift shines in green.

But the striking colour does not reduce MTMґs own stylishness. Therefore, Motoren Technik Mayer sticks to the characteristic two-colour paint which is typical for the Audi R8. Behind the doors an area measuring 12 inches and painted in glossy black renders a contrast and gives the car a distinctive R8-appearance.

And MTM would not be MTM when they settled with a new paint. Therefore, they also offer a significant performance enhancement. The especially developed compressor technology which made MTM famous all over the world, propels the performance of the V8-engine with 4.2 litres cubic capacity from 420 hp (313 kW) by a third up to breathtaking 560 hp (418 kW). Also the maximum torque increases by 34 percent from 430 to 580 Newton metres. MTM also offers this enormous power improvement for the Audi R8 with the V10-engine. By exchanging the motor electronics, the performance of the latter then increases from 520 hp (388 kW) to 560 hp (418 kW) as well.

2009 BMW Z4 Review – Video

The video is in Dutch but the folks at Autoweek.nl were kind enough to add English subtitles. The car sounds nice but the new design does take some time to get used to. I personally don’t find it that great and liked the previous BMW Z4 better. I do like the hardtop better than the soft-top. What do you think of the new 2009 BMW Z4?

Hyundai Nuvis HCD-11 concept

We capture Hyundai's gullwing concept before its world debut at the New York auto show. In case you hadn't figured it out, you weren't meant to see these photos. At least not until the New York auto show opens its doors on April 8th. But thanks to an observant R&T reader and his handy camera, we can bring you these exclusive photos of Hyundai's latest, secret concept car—the Nuvis HCD-11.

Understandably, Hyundai isn't saying anything regarding the Nuvis at the moment, but we can tell you the gullwing doors on this SUV open to allow entry into a 4-seat cabin. We also believe the Nuvis will be sporting a hybrid drivetrain. Whether the Nuvis is purely a design exercise or an actual precursor to a production model remains to be seen. But while the gullwing doors and floating-in-air seats might seem pure fantasy, we're betting the Nuvis's drivetrain is intended for production down the road. The last Hyundai HCD (which stands for Hyundai California Design Center) concept was the HCD-10 Hellion that made its debut at the 2006 L.A. auto show.

Nissan Confident in Its Electric Future

While the Chevy Volt remains tethered to GM’s uncertain fate and a presumably high price tag, Nissan is ecstatic about the future of its yet-to-be-named electric car. Set to go on sale to fleets in 2010 and retail consumers in 2012, Nissan’s electric car has been on a 12-city tour, with a Cube mule carrying the electric drivetrain.

Nissan says the car’s driving range will be 100 miles, while its recharging time will be about four hours plugged into a 220-volt outlet and eight hours with a 110-volt outlet. The vehicle’s size will roughly match the Cube, but its styling will be distinct. An executive told The New York Times it would have “an iconic electric-vehicle look,” but would not bring to mind either “’Jetsons’ or ‘Blade Runner.’”

Perhaps most importantly, Nissan wants to keep the vehicle’s cost between $20,000 and $30,000. With a $7,500 tax credit most likely bringing the vehicle’s price under $20,000, coupled with the fuel savings, the Nissan electric car could intrigue both the green and the cheap.

2010 Shelby GT500

It’s rare that we’ll cover a an Amercian car aside from the Tesla, especially a Ford unless it’s a tricked-out truck. However, the 2010 Shelby GT500 with 540hp brings a new era for the formerly one-dimension vehicle. Where as the past 2009 Shelby GT was great in the quarter mile and not much else, the 2010 model keeps up with other supercar driving experiences. More importantly for the Shelby, it looks great doing a burnout.

1995 Lincoln Sentinel Concept at the eBay

Looking like a 1961 Continental reimagined thirty years on, 1995 Lincoln Sentinel concept caused quite a stir on the show circuit back in the mid-'90s.

Eventually, the not-quite-a-runner sedan somehow wound up in Hardeeville, South Carolina, where a dealer is now looking to unload it for $80,000. O.C. Welch Ford Lincoln-Mercury has apparently held the vehicle in its private collection, and while it's nothing more than a non-functional showpiece, there are possibilities. It would at least be a conversation piece, but one also pictures the bodywork picked up and laid atop a Panther chassis to make the best looking Town Car in ages.

$80k is kind of steep for something that even lacks functioning doors (it has a half-interior beneath the smoked glass), but this was a fairly significant showcar at the time, and even now, it arguably has far more presence than anything in the Ford Motor Company's premium portfolio.

2009 BMW X5M and X6M first official pics

We know what they say about attempting to be a jack of all trades – but that’s exactly what BMW’s done with its new high-performance 2009 BMW X5M and 2009 BMW X6M duo. As the names imply, these are the fabled M Division’s take on Munich’s X5 and X6 SUVs, and with 547bhp on tap from the latest twin-turbo V8 engine, the newest M cars offer performance that will scare a contemporary M3.

BMW M GmbH has tweaked the 4.4-litre V8 engine seen elsewhere in the BMW range and the same engine is used by the mechanically identical X5M and X6M. Breathed on by a pair of twin-scroll turbochargers, they produce a heady 547bhp at 5750rpm and a titanic 501lb ft of twist. To give you some idea of the crushing performance on tap, peak torque is available all the way from 1500-5650rpm.

2010 GMC Terrain

While GMC's new-for-2010 Terrain crossover may be all but identical to Chevrolet's Equinox, one look at this bluff-faced polarizing design will tell you that badge-engineering wasn't part of the program at General Motors. Yes, both vehicles share the same platform, the same engine choices and even the same suspension calibrations, but the in-your-face look here is likely to inspire love-it-or-hate-it reactions. We'll let you decide on which side of the fence you sit, with one caveat: It is often the case that certain cars look better in the metal than on screen or in photographs. We were invited to GM's Design Dome for a media backgrounder, and after being in-and-around the vehicle, we profess that we can't make the same case.

Controversial aesthetics aside, the 2010 GMC Terrain looks to have the goods, including a new 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine on the base model that delivers 182 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. Like its Chevy stablemate, this model is tipped to deliver 30 miles-per-gallon on the highway. The four-banger features noise-canceling technology to mute undesirable sound characteristics and a driver-selectable Eco button that remaps the throttle responses, shift patterns, and torque converter lockup speed to improve fuel economy.

2010 Lexus HS 250h Hybrid

The HS 250h, Lexus’ first and highly devoted hybrid car, joined fellow hybrids GS and LS sedans, and RX SUV in its hybrid line-up when it was revealed at the Detroit Auto Show.

Hoping to conquer an untapped market, Lexus follows through a recent research that reveals 60 percent of novice luxury car buyers would purchase a hybrid. There were rumors that the Lexus hybrid will undoubtedly be founded on the Prius, but Lexus spokesman Greg Thome said that the HS 250h more likely connects to the Toyota Avensis that is being sold in Europe.

Lexus HS 250h boasts of a 2.4-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder with a total of 187 hp. The Lexus new hybrid is expected to exceed the RX 400h fuel efficiency status by more than 30 percent. The HS 250h is the first Lexus model with a four-cylinder engine.

The HS 250h’s interior includes a Remote Touch interface, Bluetooth, moon roof, satellite radio, and an iPod port. Luxury options like heads-up display, radar cruise control, wide-view front monitor, and a keep-lane assist system are also accessible. Almost 30% of the interior is made up of a plant-based, carbon-neutral plastic that causes the a greening effect.

The Lexus HS 250h hybrid is expected to start low at the $40.000 range.

2009 Mercedes-Benz R-Class facelift spied

As these images reveal, Mercedes-Benz is set to breathe new life into its lacklustre R-Class range with a facelifted prototype spied wearing heavy camouflage in the US recently.

It has been rumoured that the new model would share a similar appearance to the somewhat friendlier B-class people mover, although whether this will affect the current sales slump for the model remains to be seen.

The credentials for the R-Class are certainly not very inspiring, being too big, too cumbersome and too thirsty - in its current guise at least.

Although this perhaps reflects more on Mercedes’ need to fill every market niche rather than creating a truly practical people mover.

Here is an interesting video showing a Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 vs a Shelby Mustang GT 500. The Lamborghini LP560-4 Gallardo destroys a Shelby GT500 pumping out 600 horsepower. Even though the GT500 (600 hp) has more horsepower then the Lamborghini (560 hp) it’s still no match because the curb weight of the Gallardo is over 600 lbs. less than the GT500. That factor alone is what decides this race.

2009 Porsche GT3 RS spied

Following the official unveiling of the new generation 2009 Porsche GT3, its more track-focussed sibling has been spied at the Nürburgring recently, testing alongside the current model. Mechanically identical to the standard GT3, the RS or Rennsport model is lighter, stronger and more aerodynamic thanks to unique additions such as a polycarbonate rear window, carbon fibre hood, rear wing and roll cage.

While this prototype model wears a rather ordinary black exterior finish, the final production version will keep the trademark “GT3 RS” side sticker and special coloured wheels, decorative stripe, contrast-painted outside mirrors and rear wing endplates.

Porsche GT3 RS has always been an anomaly, featuring an unassuming normally-aspirated 3.8-litre flat-six engine in its latest guise - hardly the credentials of a supercar - however Porsche has managed to extract an impossible 320kW from this engine.

The result is zero to 100km/h in around 4.0 seconds - fractionally quicker than the standard GT3 - and a top-speed of 311km/h. A rear shot of the prototype explains at least part of its performance capabilities, with the massively wide tyres on the rear helping immensely with traction.

SsangYong C200 Aero and Eco unveiled

SsangYong unveiled yesterday during the Seoul Motor Show opening their two new models - the SsangYong C200 Aero and Eco. The SsangYong C200 is scheduled to go into production later this year and will hit the British showroom floor in maximum a year. Aligning themselves with the current eco-trend, SsangYong made the C200 smaller and lighter than its other models to improve on fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions.

The SsangYong C200 Eco, the green one in the images, obviously, is powered by a diesel hybrid engine. The SsangYong C200 Aero is available with either a 2.0 diesel or a turbocharged 1.8 liter petrol engine.

Both the SsangYong C200 Aero and the Eco comes as standard with a six-speed automatic transmission, but the company also offers a manual.
Styled by Giugiaro’s ItalDesign in Italy, the C200 has a 2.65m wheelbase with an overall length of 4.4m. The car will undergo Euro NCAP crash testing before coming to market.

2010 Mustang GT vs 2010 Camaro SS vs 2009 Challenger RT – Video

MotorTrend does a performance test and handling test between the 2010 Mustang,Camaro and Challenger. I was very suprised the the 0-60 times on all of these cars. The 2010 Mustang GT is a lot faster now and suprisingly faster than the 2009 V8 Hemi Challenger RT. The 2010 Camaro SS does a 0-60 in an amazing 4.7 and is a steal at $30,095. These are all nice modern muscle cars and I’d be happy with any of the three. What do you think of the muscle cars?

2010 Kia Aero Soul APRIL System

(from Kia Press Release) Kia has revealed its new Aero-Soul concept that reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions with a simple and low-cost system called Air Propulsion and Retardation Installation Line. Although unveiled on the company’s stylish and fun cross-over Soul the patented system can be easily extended to all the company’s vehicles and will even be available as a bolt-on accessory for vehicles already in use.

The system relies on small sensors built into the front and rear bumpers which monitor external wind speed and deploy panels when the wind is sufficient to provide additional directional impetus according to the car’s behaviour.

So at cruising speeds if the wind behind the car is strong – such as in winter gales – the panels will harness wind power to provide forward motion. If the car is slowing or under braking the panels will deploy to provide additional retardation effort. Additionally a small electrically powered baffle can be lowered just behind the exhaust pipe under harsh braking to provide the kind of “reverse-thrust” normally associated with aircraft during landing – this element will only be available as a factory-fitted device.

Systems Manager Avril Babo at Kia’s Eco-Technology Research Institute in Mabuk, south of Seoul said: “The big problem with most emission reduction systems is that they are expensive. We wanted to come up with an answer that didn’t cost the earth and could be retrospectively applied to cars already on the road. The new A.P.R.I.L. system will be available on all vehicles ordered after midnight on March 31, 2010 and the accessory pack will be available the following day. Prices will be announced in due course.

Kia all-new Sorento at Seoul Motor Show

Kia has taken the wraps off its all-new Sorento – the landmark vehicle that took the Korean brand onto the world stage – at the Seoul Motor Show. Longer and lower, the new Sorento brings sleek styling and a futuristic touch to the world of the urban CUV. With its longer front overhang, wedge profile, crisply defined greenhouse and accentuated wheelarch volumes, Kia’s new CUV looks thoroughly modern and sporty.

The 4.7-metre long new Sorento moves vehicle design in this segment up to a new level of sophistication. The original Kia Sorento was a ‘landmark’ vehicle which took the Korean brand into a whole new section of the automotive market all around the world. Bold frontal styling incorporates Kia’s new ‘signature grille’ that blends seamlessly into the new Sorento’s four-light, black bezel wrap-around headlamps. The profile’s rising upper belt-line and the dynamic bevel treatment beneath the greenhouse plus the unique trapezoid C-Pillar adds tension and endows new Sorento with a unique appearance. MV Agusta F4CC Italian Superbike

The F4CC is the crown jewel of the MV Agusta line. A special production model, only one hundred F4CC’s are being produced, each with its own serial number 1-100 imprinted on a platnium plate at the top of the steering column. The 1078cc engine on the Italian superbike reaches a top speed of 195mph. While the engine is too large to be hitting any official race tracks, this beauty will smoke most all competition on the streets.

2009 Honda Civic Hybrid

2008 was pretty good for the Honda Civic Hybrid. As the original Insight was but a distant memory and the Accord Hybrid faded into obscurity, the Civic was the lone hybrid in Honda's portfolio. The 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid is the highest-mileage member of the Civic family. Its four-door body style delivers the same practicality as the basic Civic sedan, but delivers EPA fuel economy ratings of 40 mpg city, 45 mpg highway, and 42 mpg combined. As for a life-justifying reason to exist, being a mileage king isn't a bad start.

Another strong point is the Civic Hybrid's price. At only a $3100 premium over a similarly equipped Civic EX-L, one can imagine buyers making the step up to the Hybrid-L (at $24,850) to benefit from the significant mileage improvement over the non-hybrid's 26/34 mpg. (At $2/gallon, the fuel-savings payoff driving 15,000 miles per year is about 9 years; half that if the price of gas doubles.)

A third consideration is that while the 2010 Insight borrows nameplate awareness and brand equity from the first-generation Insight -- a car that has acquired cult-like status in some car circles -- the new Insight is slotted below the Civic in terms of price, starting at under $20,000. The least expensive Civic Hybrid starts at about $23,650, but is considered a more "premium" small car offering many more features including four-wheel disc brakes (the Insight's rear brakes are cost-efficient drums) and the availability of a leather interior.

Additionally, the Insight is about five inches shorter, two inches narrower and has a six-inch shorter wheelbase compared to Honda Civic Hybrid, so the Insight offers less passenger room.

The 2009 Civic Hybrid receives a few tweaks underhood as well. The 1.3-liter I-4 carries over for 2009, but it's rated at 110 hp, 17 more than in 2008. Through Honda's Integrated Motor Assist system, it's aided by a 20-hp electric motor, which works in one of five different ways (one method allows the Civic Hybrid to run on electric power alone, but not from a standing start. The extra horsepower, larger motor, and aerodynamic snout help earn the Civic Hybrid an advantage on the highway - it's rated at 45 mpg, while the Insight is certified at 42 mpg.

Vauxhall Corsa VXR

It's a bit of a nutter, this Corsa VXR. It ain't a regular one, see - this is the ‘Arctic Edition' and just 500 will be made. Which, as the more astute of you may have realised, is Very White Indeed. Whiter than a polar bear's wotsits.

It has a few differences over the standard car, but first let's talk about the exhaust. Because this one is hillarious. Hilarious in a good way, you'll understand, as it rips through traffic and crackles on the overrun like a south London gunshot, sending shoppers diving for cover into shop doorways. Made by Remus and developed by Triple Eight racing (the guys who sort Vauxhall's race cars), it buys you an extra 14bhp and about 1,000 decibels too. The only way to drive this is with the windows down, a baseball cap on and some sort of drum and bass arrangement on the stereo. You won't be popular, but you'll be having fun.

And now for the other changes. In short, Vauxhall has saved you a trip to Halfords. It has distinctive 18-inch alloys, painted black to match the new wing mirrors and tinted sliding glass roof. You get all the scoops and wings from the standard VXR too, painted in that lovely Glacier White paint, which is bright enough to dazzle Mr Magoo.

That exhaust takes power from the 1.6 turbo to 204bhp and will shave a smidge off the 0-62 time, though Vauxhall only quotes the time of the standard car, 6.8 seconds. It drives exactly the same as the standard car, so expect a moment of turbo lag before the front wheels get all flustered as the engine gets on boost and sends them a rush of power. It gets that power down alright - just - but doesn't feel especially refined in how it does it: it's all-or-nothing, and a bit frenzied.

So if you can stick the chavvy image, you'll love it. If you don't care about a slightly hyperactive power delivery, you'll love it. Otherwise, you're better off keeping your £17,225 safe for now and waiting for a new Fiesta ST, if it ever arrives...

2009 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG

The press embargo on the stunning new Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG has been broken in the lead up to the car’s official unveiling at the New York Auto Show, giving us an early look at this amazing machine. The potent performance flagship of the recently released new generation E-Class range borrows many advanced technologies and components from its SL63 AMG Roadster sibling, including the AMG 6.3-litre V8-engine.

This powerplant develops 386kW and 630Nm, putting it on par with the SL63 AMG Roadster and well clear of its little brother, the C63 AMG - incorporating a newly designed water cooling system to ensures maximum endurance even under the enormous dynamic stresses of the racetrack. The engine is mated to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission which features four driving modes: ‘C’ Controlled Efficiency, ‘S’ Sport, ‘S+’ Sport plus and ‘M’ Manual. In Controlled Efficiency mode, the transmission has been calibrated to perform early upshifts to keep engine speeds as low as possible.

In the more demanding Manual mode, the transmission can perform rev-matched shifts in just 100 milliseconds and features a RACE START function to call on the maximum acceleration potential automatically.

Adding to the capability of the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG’s split personality - luxury and performance - it also boasts an electronically controlled damping system with three settings: Comfort, Sport and Sport plus, which copes equally well with the racetrack as it does the road. A unique, newly developed front axle provides more grip when taking turns at speed, already proving its worth in the C63 AMG, while more negative camber has been dialled in at the rear for greater stability.

The 3-stage ESP from the SL63 AMG and C63 AMG has also been carried over, which provides three modes to act as an electronic safety net - complimenting skilled drivers and keeping the less experienced out of harm’s way. The simply stunning form of the E-Class sedan has been maintained whilst adding a touch of aggression, with wider fenders, a new AMG front with larger air intakes and daytime LED running lights, AMG side skirts and AMG rear apron with a black diffuser insert.

Hyundai Genesis Prada

The 2009 North American Car of the Year, the Hyundai Genesis Sedan, has joined forces with an unlikely partner, Italian luxury goods Prada, for a special and very limited edition of the luxury vehicle. The three Genesis Prada models will make their official debut tomorrow, at the 2009 Seoul Motor Show. The work on the project started, as we reported, last November and the three resulting vehicles will either be auctioned for charity purposes (2 of them) or stay with Hyundai.

Since the specs on the Genesis are already known, we will now focus on Prada's input into the limited edition. The Italian firm developed a sporty version of the Genesis bodywork, complete with 20 inch alloy rims designed and produced in Italy and an outer antenna with edge shape.

The paintwork is in matte metallic midnight blue, combined with metal parts in titanium. Dark matte plated gold replaces the existing shining chrome for the radiator grill, the emblem, and the outer handles. The interior of the Genesis Prada was also subjected to major makeovers, as the dashboard and the upholstery were hand crafted in Prada's trademark saffiano leather for an even more luxurious finishing than in the series versions.

In order to further underline the unique image of the “Genesis Prada,” a new special technology was applied to all gold plated details and all wood grain parts. As we said, the Genesis Prada took over five months to build and the work on the vehicles was conducted both at Hyundai’s R&D center in Namyang and at Prada’s Design Center in Italy, where Genesis models were delivered to allow a full size development.

2008 Chevrolet Corvette 427 Special Edition Z06

(from General Motors Press Release) The 60's gave rise to many great memories. One of them is undoubtedly the ‘big-block’ Corvette Stingray. With the introduction of the Corvette 427 Limited Edition Z06, Corvette is also awakening memories – in an exclusive way. It is building 505 of these limited edition vehicles, of which only 52 will be coming to Europe.

The number 427 refers to the cylinder capacity in the American unit of measurement, cubic inches. In the years 1966 to ‘69, the most powerful Corvette engines had this capacity – also the cubic inches equivalent to the 7.0 litre LS7 ‘small block’ in the current Z06.

The special limited edition of the Z06 is characterised by a number of unique 427 styling features, such as the Crystal Red Tintcoat metallic paint with ‘stinger style’ graphics, exclusive chromed rims, a leather interior with embroidered 427 logo on the seats and floor mats, ‘Z06’ inscription in the sill strips, and a centre armrest with serial number and signature by Corvette factory director Wil Cooksey.

Subaru Legacy saloon

Subaru will show off its new Legacy saloon at next week's New York auto show 2009. The new Legacy follows closely the blueprint set by the eponymous concept car revealed at Detroit – so it's the biggest model yet in its 20-year history.

Early figures suggest the new Legacy is 35mm longer, 90mm wider and 80mm higher than its predecessor. And, this being an American launch, the press blurb even states the swollen newcomer can swallow four golf bags. Perfect for an executive four-ball.

The US-market car is powered by a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated or 3.6 boxer engine mated to a new CVT transmission dubbed Lineartronic. Naturally, the Legacy has Subaru's trademark four-wheel drive system. Power outputs are as follows:

• Legacy 2.5i, 170bhp, 170lb ft
• Legacy 2.5 GT, 265bhp, 258lb ft
• Legacy 3.6R, 256bhp, 247lb ft

Subaru Legacy lands in Europe in October 2009, and we're told there will be a suite of Euro-focused engines. Today's Legacy majors on the 2.0-litre petrol and diesel units, which will be transferred over to the new 2010 model.

Subaru in the UK has been struggling with exchange rate woes, which have forced it to axe the Impreza diesel here. 'We're hoping to bring it in this autumn,' said a spokeswoman. 'But we've been struggling to make the numbers add up.'

Vorsteiner Dry Carbon Aero Kit for BMW M3 Sedan

Vorsteiner has released a new dry carbon aero kit for the 2008 BMW M3 E90 Sedan, a model that was in the market only for a few months, as BWW replaced it shortly after its market introduction in early 2008 with the facelifted 2009 BMW MY M3 sedan.

The California-based tuner’s proposal includes various lightweight dry carbon components, such as a trunk lid, a front-lip spoiler and a rear diffuser with integrated fins.
