2008 Chevrolet Malibu Bottom Line

The mid-size Chevrolet Malibu sedan has been completely redesigned for 2008. New proportions and very handsome, attractive styling inside and out give the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu a more upscale appearance, while a newly available 252-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 and six-speed automatic--optional on the top LTZ model--brings newfound refinement.

The more popular engine choice for the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu lineup is the economical 169-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which is rated at a frugal 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and comes only with a smooth-shifting four-speed automatic transmission. Performance is good enough with the four-cylinder, but if you plan to haul full loads or take on mountain passes, you may be wishing for the V-6, which is very responsive and much more refined than the V-6 in the previous Malibu.

2008 Chevrolet Malibu Bottom LineThe 2008 Chevrolet Malibu has a very smooth, well-controlled ride and handles securely, though without much performance flair. If equipped with the four-cylinder engine, the Malibu has a fuel-saving electric power steering system, but V-6 versions come with a hydraulic power steering that gives a bit more road feel. The cabin is very well designed, with an attractive instrument panel and materials that are pleasing to the touch. Front seats were among the most comfortable in the mid-size sedan class, and the backseat is quite roomy.

Three models grace the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu lineup: the base LS, midrange LT, and luxury-laden LTZ. The LS includes power accessories, keyless entry, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, while LTZ models get plenty of noteworthy features such as remote start, automatic climate control, a universal remote, and power-adjustable pedals, plus a number of appearance extras like LED taillamps and interior ambient lighting. An integrated Bluetooth hands-free calling interface isn't offered; there's no screen-based satellite navigation system available, either. But OnStar turn-by-turn navigation is included in addition to the other emergency and concierge services OnStar provides. The Malibu comes with a one-year subscription, but after that the owner must pay a fee.

Safety is a strong point for the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu; it's earned the top five-star rating in all of the federal government's crash tests, along with top Good ratings from the insurance industry in frontal offset and side tests. Front side thorax airbags and side curtain bags that cover front and rear occupants are standard, plus anti-lock brakes. Electronic stability control is standard on all but the base Malibu LS.

The Bottom Line:
After years of being a second-stage alternative, the Malibu is a legitimate contender for best-in-class.

2008 Chevrolet Cobalt NHRA Pro Stock

(from General Motors Press Release) Chevy Cobalt Continues Chevy's Winning Tradition in Pro Stock

Chevrolet's ongoing American Revolution came to NHRA Pro Stock with the introduction of the Chevy Cobalt at Bristol Dragway on April 29, 2005. It didn't take long for the new Chevy to earn a place in the NHRA record book. On June 18, 2005, Kurt Johnson qualified his ACDelco Cobalt in the No. 1 spot at the K&N Filters Super Nationals in Englishtown, N.J. One week later, Johnson put his Cobalt in the winner's circle at the Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals in Madison, Ill. In 2007, Chevy Cobalt drivers combined for seven victories in 12 final-round appearances, with Dave Connolly finishing third in the final Pro Stock standings and Johnson finishing fifth.

2008 Chevrolet Cobalt NHRA Pro Stock"Chevrolet's performance heritage promises cars that are dependable, capable and exciting to drive," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. "The Chevy Cobalt puts the fun back into driving by delivering an experience never before seen in the compact-car segment. Chevrolet races to win: Chevy has a strong heritage in drag racing and is one of America's most successful automotive brands. The NHRA Pro Stock Cobalt is designed, built and engineered to continue that winning tradition."

During this initial design phase, NHRA officials mandated more than 20 minimum dimensions for the construction of Pro Stock cars, including the new Cobalt. The new specifications covered such areas as the height and width of the car, the front and rear overhangs and other critical dimensions.

The production version of the Cobalt provided a solid foundation for GM Racing engineers to begin the planning and construction of the Pro Stock version. Extensive research was conducted in the GM wind tunnel in Warren, Mich., evaluating various greenhouse shapes, decks, roofs and fender flares to determine the most aerodynamically efficient design.

GM Racing engineers had two objectives for the Cobalt program: The first was to create a one-piece body, or unibody, that would make it more efficient for chassis builders to mount and work with, and for the NHRA Technical Department to inspect. The second was to reduce the weight of the body while maintaining its stiffness, strength and structural integrity.

After the molds were completed, Five Star created a Cobalt body that was sent back to Ness Racecraft, where it was mounted on a chassis. NHRA inspectors again went through the process of checking dimensions, and at this point the templates were made.

2008 Chevy Impala SS NHRA

(from General Motors Press Release) Both Pro Stocker Greg Anderson and Funny Car driver Tony Pedregon must like the view from the top as each followed up their Norwalk (Ohio) wins with No. 1 qualifiers for tomorrow’s eliminations at the 29th annual NHRA Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway. Anderson drove his Summit Racing Pontiac to both ends of the Bandimere Speedway Pro Stock record with a track-record elapsed time of 7.010 at a track-record speed of 196.10 mph to edge fellow Pontiac driver Mike Edwards. It was the points leader’s third No. 1 qualifier of the season and the 65th of his illustrious career.

2008 Chevy Impala SS NHRA“I would’ve loved to have gotten into the ‘sixes’ and made a little history here,” Anderson said. “We ended up a hundredth away, but you never know what might happen tomorrow; it’s going to be fun. We’re happy so far. We’re very happy with the racetrack and we’re very happy with the race car.

“We learned a lot here last week testing and it’s just paying off this weekend. But it just amazes me, some of the teams tested out here, some of the teams didn’t, you have completely different conditions that we won’t see again all year, and still you have four or five hundredths from top to bottom. The class is amazing right now, so to come out on top on a Saturday night or a Sunday night feels pretty doggone good because this class is definitely tougher than it’s ever been. It’s going to be a battle tomorrow and the winner is going to feel better after this one.”

Bandimere Speedway, set in the mountains just outside of Denver, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and many of the drivers, including Anderson, are impressed with the all-new concrete surface and the continuous improvements being made to the mile-high facility.

Anderson led a trio of Pontiacs in the top four in qualifying as Mike Edwards placed his Young Life/Penhall Pontiac GXP in the No. 2 position with a 7.021 e.t. at 195.62 mph, and Greg Stanfield qualified his Pontiac in the fourth qualifying position. Ironically, both drivers were also under the old Bandimere Speedway elapsed time record.

Stanfield drove his Attitude Apparel Pontiac GXP to the No. 4 qualifying position with an elapsed time of 7.031 seconds at 195.31 mph.

2008 Honda Accord Euro - Review

Bettering the original Euro was always going to be a challenge, after all it’s still a very contemporary looking and highly relevant car. But fortunately for us resting on its laurels isn’t something Honda does and from where I stand, that can only be a good thing.

Dimensionally bigger in almost every direction AccordEuro encapsulates a sporty yet elegant stance with an assertive front end drawing sharper angles and crisp crease lines to a point from its flowing, progressively up swept profile, kind of like a well ironed shirt. The athletically wider track further highlights Euro’s slightly shorter stance and perhaps best of all the rear end is endowed with a softer finish that is more dignified and less boy-racer than the predecessor, again a very good thing.

2008 Honda Accord Euro-12008 Honda Accord Euro-2Inside Honda’s commitment to above average material use and arrangement is clearly evident as are the comfortable ergonomics, tech-savvy equipment levels, sassy appearance and generous proportions. The leather clad heated memory seats offer an elevated level of comfort over those of Euro’s nearest competitors as well as providing decent support and a lovely welcoming feel, which is a refreshing change from the often brash, cheaper leather trims found in so many rivals.

The DOHC, 16-valve power plant has been revised slightly for the new model and now incorporates larger valves, recalibrated VTEC mapping, reduced back pressure and a slightly higher compression ratio (from 10.5 to 11.0:1) to deliver a lissome 148kW at 7000rpm. Best of all with an ample 230Nm of torque on hand at 4200 revs, power delivery is better managed, more linear and impressively smoother than even I thought possible - kudos Honda.

Economy has also improved from what was already considered a class leader with combined figures this time round of 8.9 litres per 100km (ADR). Around town expect mid 9.0 litres whilst on the open road high 5.0L/100km suggests even more is possible through careful driving - and a more run in engine. Considering Accord Euro now weighs in at a hefty 1605kgs these figures speak for themselves and when the 2.2-litre turbo diesel arrives in 2010, Euro is certain to be a world beater.

Starting from $32,990 - $1000 less than the predecessor - the Japanese built Accord Euro is a dead set steal for the money and given the function, application, appearance and purpose is pretty hard to pass up.

Toyota RAV4 SR180

The new RAV4 SR180 brings both sporting performance and high value to Toyota’s compact SUV range, a model that ably combines spirited on-road driving, contemporary good looks and the kind of off-road ability that more than meets the demands of most motorists.

Toyota RAV4 SR180-1Toyota RAV4 SR180-2Positioned to command a price advantage against its main market rivals, the RAV4 SR180 is exclusively powered by Toyota’s advanced 175bhp (177 DIN hp) D-4D diesel engine, mated to a slick six-speed manual transmission. With 400Nm of torque on tap, it is a formidable performer and can move from rest to 62mph in 9.3 seconds. Its pulling power is matched by respectable fuel consumption of 40.4mpg (official combined cycle figure) and carbon dioxide emissions of 185g/km – Band E for Vehicle Excise Duty.

Building on the specification of the RAV4 XT-R, the SR180 is distinguished by its 18-inch alloys housed in bold, extended wheelarches. Run-flat tyre technology means there is no need to house a spare. Dark-tinted headlamps further distinguish the model from its stablemates. The list of standard features also includes Integrated Active Drive, which combines Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Hill Start Assist, Bluetooth connectivity, dark-tinted rear privacy glass, front fog lamps, six-speaker sound system with six-CD autochanger, cruise control, electric sunroof and rear parking sensors.

On sale now, the new RAV4 SR180 has an on-the-road price of £23,045. Owners can add a personal touch to their vehicle with a choice of options, including a Style Pack (£695) with side steps, scuff plates and chrome bodywork detailing and full-map satellite navigation (£1,735).

Jaguar XJ spied

For Jaguar to truly stay alive under its new India owners, Tata, it needs to revitalise its entire range and the large XJ sedan, rooted in the past, needs a complete make over. That’s just what is coming and these photographs by our spy photographers show a mule testing the car that will radically replace the currently very staid Jaguar XJ sometime in 2009.

The best information on the new Jaguar XJ, which will echo the recently released XF sedan, but in an even more radical shape, has come from English car magazine Autocar , which obtained considerable inside information from sources who have been shown a full size model of the new Jaguar XJ.

Jaguar XJ -1Jaguar XJ -2The new generation Jaguar XJ will bring a welcome shift in design for the next XJ, which desperately needs a more muscular look to match its athletic moves.

The present iteration has an extremely capable chassis, but its interior and exterior designs are stuck in the past. The next-generation car will still use the current XJ sedan’s aluminium underpinnings, but it will gain more modern lines conceived under the supervision of Jaguar design chief Ian Callum.

Autocar’s information says that when the crucial vehicle, codenamed X351, begins production in late 2009, it will rock the luxury market.

According to sources Jaguar thinks the new XJ could be pitched against cars as wide ranging as the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Maserati Quattroporte and even the Bentley Flying Spur. Pricing for the top-end model could break through the $250,000 barrier.

Although the lightweight aluminium chassis of the current Jaguar XJ will be carried over, the car’s upper structure has been redesigned. This has allowed Jaguar’s design team to design a car with a coupe-like flowing roofline.

Aside from a low roof and high tail combination, the new car is said to have a narrower nose than the Jaguar C-XF, with narrower headlights (likely to be LED units), although it retains the large, square grille that made its debut on the Jaguar C-XF. One proposal is for the grille’s mesh to be made up of hundreds of tiny Jaguar ‘leaper’ cutouts.

Audi RS5 not just LED lights

Audi, with the current interest surrounding its brand, is preparing itself with the lovely A5, adding the letters “RS” and reflecting the masterpieces that have recently emerged from the German company, such as the RS4, the R8 or the V10 RS6.

The challenge to the M3 is far more explicit now, with both V8 high revs, coupès and twin-clutch shift, but the true revolution is in the traction with BMW choosing rear wheel, and Audi splashing out into all-wheel drive.

Audi RS5New information on this ferocious coupè arrives from Ingoldstat and Autozeitung. The car won’t have much in common with the more easygoing S5, though some technical aspects will be the same. As with what occurred with the S4 and the RS4 B7, the two models in the future will be quite distinct.

The RS should be more sincere but radical, compared to an S, and the lowered body, 20-inch wheels and nasty looking air intakes attest to this. While on one hand the overall mass increases, on the other the weight decreases through an intelligent use of alluminium and magnesium. This should see about 50 kg saved, keeping weight to 1580 kg. Among the options offered will be a carbon-ceramic braking system.

Intelligent suspension has been included, along with launch-control and rear sports differential will be coupled with the all-wheel drive, achieving greater driving feel. Autozeitung anticipates that that at the heart of the vehicle will be a V8 4.2 FSI engine, completely updated with direct injection system, reaching about 470 hp. All of this should guarantee the RS5 performance in line with the future M3 CSL, but at a lower price.

'Bug Jam' Volkswagen festival

Bugs, bangers and the world’s lowest Volkswagen campervan – the three day ‘Bug Jam’ Volkswagen festival has roared into life. This year Northamptonshire's Santa Pod raceway plays host to the annual three-day Bug Jam - a weekend festival of Volkswagen enthusiasts and drag strip racing. And nestled in a tent in the shadow of the drag strip, record-breaking custom car builder Andy Saunders - who recently built the credit-crunch beating Hummer – sits with a determined look on his face, arms covered in oil, and a welding torch in his hands. "I don’t know how we're gonna do this one – I might have taken on a bit too much", says Andy.

'Bug Jam' Volkswagen festival-1'Bug Jam' Volkswagen festival-2'Bug Jam' Volkswagen festival-3The Poole-based customiser – who built the world’s lowest car, and then beat his own record again - is at Santa Pod with his team on another record-breaking attempt: to build the world’s lowest van, dubbed “Van Cake.”

But Andy’s work doesn’t end there. Next week at the 2008 British Motor Show, he'll be unveilling his top-secret project. "Once I’ve finished here I’ve got to get the motor show project car down to London’s ExCel centre – I haven’t slept in days". A cameraman filming Andy’s Herculean task smiles as he overhears. Just then, an onlooker asks Andy how high the Volkswagen Caravelle will sit when it’s finished.

The show-goer looks on in disbelief and waves him good luck, just as Andy dives back in with his welding machine. But modified Beetles and record-breaking vans are just part of Bug Jam – there are dozens of stalls set up alongside the drag strip selling everything from novelty Volkswagen accessories, CDs and modified exhausts. As the crowd gently throngs from stall to stall – and scores of three-wheeled bikes roll past – a deafening roar fills Santa Pod’s drag strip.
The radio announcer screams in anticipation: "That’s got a 2.5-litre Scooby lump in there".

Two customised Beetles are preparing to duel, and the sound of the two strip racers revving their engines receives a round of applause. The steward raises his hands and points to the lights... as they turn green, the two Beetles set off, tyres smoking towards the finishing line.

Bug Jam is at Santa Pod raceway on Friday 18, Satuday 19 and Sunday July 20.

Mercedes-Benz going turbo & hybrid

German giant Mercedes-Benz has announced today that it will introduce turbocharged engines across its entire model lineup by the end of 2010. The announcement comes amid upcoming legislation in Europe and the U.S. which is pushing manufacturers towards more CO2 friendly cars.

The European Commission will need all German auto-manufacturers to reduce their average fleet emissions from 178 grams per kilometre to 138 g/km by 2012. Those that fail to meet the target wilo pay hefty fines.

Mercedes-Benz “All our vehicles will have turbocharged engines in series production by the end of 2010 at the latest,” Thomas Weber, Daimler board member responsible for research and development said

Turbocharging petrol cars has till recently been a speciality of Japanese manufacturers, but demand for forced induction is growing as it provides a relatively cheap way to reduce fuel consumption without a performance loss.

Fans of BBC’s TopGear would remember Jeremy Clarkson mentioning some time ago, that since the Mercedes-Benz S class is the epitome of modern automotive engineering, the fact that it’s not a hybrid suggests that hybrids are not the way of the future.

Well, Clarkson may soon be eating his own words with the Mercedes flagship sedan expected to be offered as a full hybrid vehicle by end of 2009!

Mercedes says the final aim is to get to zero-emission driving which will require the use of fuel cells and electric-powered vehicles.

Mercedes Benz R-Class spied

Mercedes-Benz’s philosophy of making a car suited for nearly every single person on earth has worked to a degree, except for the R-class MPV. But as these pictures prove, Mercedes is apparently planing to give it another try with a new R-class. This prototype was snapped in the U.S. by our photographers today and wears massive camouflage on front and rear.

Mercedes Benz R-Class-1Mercedes Benz R-Class-2Mercedes Benz R-Class-3It is rumoured the car will receive a front-end facelift in a style more we are more accustomed to, one that might resemble the more friendly B-class people mover. Whether or not a facelift will increase sales is still to be seen.

There are currently four variants of the R-class available. The R280 CDI, R320 CDI, R350, R500. The car retails from $80,835 for the entry model and goes all the way to $129,111 for the 5.5-litre V8.

2008 Autodelta Alfa Romeo Spider J6 3.2 C

(from Autodelta Press Release) Autodelta is proud to present for its world premiиre, the Autodelta Spider J6 3.2 C.

The new Spider J6 3.2 C is Autodelta’s no-compromise interpretation of the stunning Alfa Spider, which collected the prestigious accolade of ‘Cabrio of the Year’ upon its launch at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show. It is Autodelta’s second bespoke model to be based on the exciting ‘new generation’ of Alfa Romeo models, and its market arrival follows the very successful launch of the Autodelta Brera J5 3.2 C just over a year ago.

2008 Autodelta Alfa Romeo Spider J6 3.2 C-12008 Autodelta Alfa Romeo Spider J6 3.2 C-2The Autodelta Spider J6 3.2 C once again redefines the company’s pursuit of the maximum performance and driving pleasure to be drawn from Alfa Romeo’s production models, and is the culmination of more than a year’s intense research and development as well as engineering innovation. It evolves from the Brera J5 3.2 C programme, however, it offers new specification in areas pertaining to a convertible sports car as well as unique and individual styling cues.

Engine
Glorious, powerful, responsive – the V6 engine is at the heart of Alfa Romeo’s sporting ambitions. But time simply doesn’t stand still, and after three decades one of the most beloved automotive masterpieces, the ‘Arese V6’, has given way to an all-new 3.2-litre V6 engine which brings with it fresh challenges for Autodelta’s engineering team.

Twenty years experience developing Alfa Romeos has enabled our engineers to take this new unit and utilise a carefully developed integral supercharging system. First seen on the Brera J5 3.2 C which debuted last autumn, this highly potent package now finds its way under the bonnet of the Spider J6 3.2 C. At the heart of the robust yet lightweight, no compromise integrated supercharging system is the C30-94 unit supplied by Technical Partner, Rotrex. This unit is considered to be the most responsive supercharger available today, noted for its durability, light weight and compact format. It is already performance-proven having been used in supercars such as the world record breaking Koenigsegg CCR.

From a standard power output of 260 bhp @ 6,300 rpm and maximum torque of 322 Nm @ 4,500 rpm, the Spider J6’s V6 engine to now turns out 348 bhp (an increase of 88 bhp) and 430 Nm of torque (an extra 108 Nm), all delivered in a useable, responsive and smooth manner. The Autodelta Spider J6 3.2 C races from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62.5 mph) in a highly impressive 5.4 seconds (standard model: 7.0 seconds), while it hits a top speed of 260 km/h (161 mph); compared to the standard model’s 239 km/h (149 mph).

2009 Subaru Impreza WRX

There will be a whole list of additional features for the WRX, including a new model (called Impreza GT) as well as a power boost for the manual WRX. The biggest update will be the availability of an automatic WRX (Impreza GT), we are unsure whether this will be a five-speed or the four-speed currently available in the lower spec Imprezas.

2008 Autodelta Alfa Romeo 159 J4 2.2 CThe new Autodelta 159 J4 2.2 C features a specially-developed supercharger system including a Rotrex C30-74 unit, new aluminium inlet manifold and bespoke intercooler, which adds up to drive the Alfa 159 saloon to power of 245 bhp and 290 Nm of torque coupled to upgrades in the area of the transmission, chassis, brakes, electronics and aerodynamics. It becomes the third member of the exclusive J-series model range, joining the Brera J5 3.2 C and Spider J6 3.2 C in our line-up.

The dramatic model is the result of an 18 month development programme that has focused on supercharging Alfa Romeos direct injection JTS engine, making Autodelta the only firm in the world to apply forced induction principles to this power unit. The overall package hones the Alfa 159 into a true high performance saloon, pushing its dynamic abilities forward in every area, but without compromising on its comfort and ‘touring’ characteristics. Top speed is raised to 165 mph, while 0-62 mph is achieved in 6.9 seconds. Exclusive features of the 159 J4 2.2 C include 8.5x19 OZ Botticelli Ultra Light alloy wheels, height adjustable coil over dampers with bound and rebound settings, stainless steel free flow dual silencer exhaust system, mechanical limited slip differential, front, rear and side aerodynamic kit, and perforated discs and new compound pads all round. Autodelta will have further models from its bespoke range in action over the two day Spa Italia event (28/29 June) including the Autodelta GT 3.7 Super Evo and two examples of the Autodelta 147 3.7 GTA AM Super. Autodelta's Managing Director Mr Jano Djelalian and the team will be on hand to introduce the new car and explain our products and services in general.

This dynamic debut builds straight on from the launch of the J4 2.2 C last weekend in the Netherlands which went very well and I'm delighted with the response of both the guests at the event, and the wider response in general already. The JTS supercharged demo cars were in action non stop during the two day event and we had very receptive feedback as well as having to start taking pre-orders. I must register my thanks to our Dutch agent Sam van Lingen who organised the two day event superbly, and made it a real success as well as an enjoyable experience for all the guests.”

Honda hybrid spied

Arch rival Toyota has always had the winning advantage having the Prius as its own specialised model. So much so that the name Prius has now become synonymous with hybrid cars and technology.
Honda on the other hand has been criticised over the years for essentially packaging a hybrid car in the same skin as its bread and butter model (Honda Civic). Somewhat confusing the market, or not differentiating enough. After all, many hybrid owners want the world to know they drive a hybrid!

Honda hybrid -1Honda hybrid -2The car which will change it all for Honda is the new Honda Hybrid captured by our photographers yesterday (pictured). We currently have no name for the car as Honda has not released any details. But we do know its based on the FCX concept.

We also know it will cost less than the Civic Hybrid but will use the same so called Integrated-Motor-Assist-System IMA that already powers the Civic.

Honda is working on several other hybrid models as well, with the new CR-Z (CR-X) also expected to be powered by a hybrid powertrain.

Will the Honda hybrid dethrone the Prius? Unlikely, given the years of unchallanged publicity Toyota has enjoyed, but we’d like to be proven wrong!

Mastretta MXT global debut

Lotus has come across some new competition from a very unlikely source which is set to make its global debut alongside Project Eagle at the British International Motor show.

The all-new Mastretta MXT is the first ever sports car to be designed and built entirely in Mexico, and follows the lightweight Lotus mantra.

Mastretta MXTIt uses a Ford-sourced supercharged 2.0-litre Duratec motor which develops a healthy 179kW of power and 249Nm through a 5-speed manual transmission - on par with the best the Exige has to offer.

Built around a semi-monocoque chassis constructed from bonded aluminium, the Mastretta MXT weighs in at only 900kg - 35kg less than the Exige S.

Fortunately for Lotus however, the Mastretta MXT can’t match the Lotus for dynamics, hitting 100km/h in around 5.0 seconds from a standing start and on to a top speed of 241km/h.

Right-hand drive production is expected to begin at the start of 2009 with an initial run of 80 units destined for the UK market at £32,999 (around $60,000 Australian dollars).

2009 Pontiac G8 Review

The 2009 Pontiac G8 is at the core of Pontiac's recent resurgence. This powerful yet refined rear-wheel-drive performance sedan is unlike anything Pontiac has offered in recent memory -- and we mean that as a sincere compliment.

2009 Pontiac G8 -12009 Pontiac G8 -2The Pontiac G8 is a mechanical twin of the Commodore sedan from Holden, GM's Australian subsidiary. That's a good thing, as the Commodore has garnered accolades Down Under for providing affordable full-size functionality in a swift and agile package. Thankfully, Pontiac stylists resisted the urge to outfit the American version with the brand's traditional assortment of scoops, vents and spoilers, and the car looks muscular and purposeful from most angles.

The G8's mechanical merits are impressive, from its range of energetic engines to its impressive combination of sharp handling and supple composure over broken pavement. The new 2009 GXP model raises the performance bar even higher with a 402-horsepower version of the iconic Corvette's 6.2-liter V8. One of our few complaints about the G8 has been the lack of a manual transmission, so we're pleased to report that you can get one on the GXP (though still not on lesser G8 models). In any guise, the G8's BMW-like MacPherson front strut layout and multilink rear suspension yields a sophisticated driving character that's more typical of European sport sedans than large domestic rear-drivers.

The G8 also impresses inside, especially considering the plastic depths to which Pontiac interiors had previously sunk. There are still too many hard surfaces, but the center stack -- save for a couple cheesy Atari-grade digital readouts at the top -- is more than a little reminiscent of Audi's industry-leading efforts. Passenger room is plentiful, particularly in back, where all but the largest riders will have space to spare. The rear center seat isn't so hospitable, however, as the wide center tunnel necessitated by the G8's rear-drive layout essentially eliminates legroom there.

At the G8's moderate price point, the Dodge Charger/Chrysler 300 twins are the only other roomy, rear-wheel-drive, full-size performance sedans available. The Chrysler siblings are certainly competent, but the G8's sporting character sets it apart. We're not fans of the G8's lackluster fuel economy, but then, the Charger/300 duo aren't likely to win any efficiency awards from the EPA either. Bottom line: If you want a large sedan with American attitude and Continental manners, the 2009 Pontiac G8 is in a class of its own.

Peugeot 308 CC - official pics

We might say that white is not really its color, and the three-quarter shots of the front don’t really do it justice. Peugeot is releasing the first pics of the 308 Coupé Cabriolet, the classic open top version with rigid folding roof.

Peugeot 308 CC-1Peugeot 308 CC-2As usual with this type of vehicle, the tail is the most discussed aspect - accomodating the hard top makes for some difficult aesthetic decisions for designers. The rear of this Peugeot is voluminous, but also flat and nearly horizontal, though the grooves creating a V effect, lighten the vision a little.

Lotus Eagle - world’s first photo

The first picture of the top secret Lotus Eagle has been revealed ahead of its British International Motor Show debut. Codenamed Lotus Project Eagle, it will be the company’s most powerful car since the Lotus Esprit and will boast a top speed of more than 150mph. The Lotus Eagle will be the most important new car for the British sports car builder since the Lotus Elise was unveiled in 1996, and should help bolster a significant sales boost.

Lotus EagleBigger than the Elise, the new sports car will be given its official name at its motor show launch party. It’s a two-plus-two seater, with two full-sized front seats and two small rear seats for short journeys, kids and baggage – similar to the layout in a Porsche 911.

And its engine is placed in the middle of the car, behind the rear seats, for optimum weight distribution and balance. It’s expected to be fitted with a 3.5-litre V6 engine sourced from Toyota but heavily modified by Lotus to give it racier attributes and more than 270bhp.

This should accelerate the lightweight Lotus from 0-60mph in less than five seconds and on to a top speed in excess of 160mph. Expected to cost between £40k and £50k, the Lotus Eagle will cost less than the £60k British-built Farbio GTS, which also features a 3.5-litre V6 engine, and roughly the same as the two-seat Porsche Cayman S.

As with the rest of the Lotus range, the Eagle will be built using special construction techniques and composite materials and to keep its weight low. It will be more comfortable and refined than the Lotus Elise, making it better suited to long distance driving.

Lotus has concentrated on making its interior more luxurious and it should feature less hardcore seats and more lavishly furnished cabin than the stripped-out Elise.

2008 Konigseder smart fortwo

(from Konigseder) Adequate to the warmer temperatures, konigseder used the smart fortwo cabrio to set an example in times of disputed emission values and co2 taxes.

2003 Fiat Simba Concept

(from Fiat Press Release) Concept Cars Fiat Simba

A name redolent of the Savannah and a vehicle with a shape that speaks of journeys and adventure despite an ability to slip through traffic jams with equal ease. These are the distinctive features of the Fiat Simba, the car that caused such a stir among the public and motoring journalists at the 26th Bologna Motor Show (the model's world premiere).

2003 Fiat Simba ConceptThe Fiat Simba is a revolutionary concept due to its original styling and versatility, a prototype that will open up new horizons in the minicar segment. It is the first example in Europe of an off-roader that is small yet able to combine the idea of roughing it with the comfort and performance of a conventional car.

The Fiat designers were able to delve into the great technical and design heritage Fiat has built up over decades and apply the skills of a company that has led the compact vehicle market for more than seventy years.

With an eye on changing customer profiles within the sector and the good potential growth prospects, we came up with the Simba. This is, in essence, a car with a dual personality that conveys an immediate impression of freshness and fun backed by solidity and sturdiness. The Fiat Simba, created to entertain yet also to surprise the most sceptical young customer, may be envisaged (and experienced) as an authentic off-road vehicle you could take on a desert rally or drive through dense jungle vegetation. Or it could be a fun small car capable of navigating intricate city centre streets and slaloming through traffic with ease. No obstacles could possibly stand in the way of the Fiat Simba's four wheel drive system (4x4 with viscous coupling) and neat size (3680 mm long, 1730 mm high and 1630 mm wide).

Externally, the prototype is distinguished by crisp body lines and typical off-road equipment: big headlights, spare wheel on the roof, broad windscreen for the best visibility and straight sides for ease of manoeuvring.

2009 Acura TL

Acura has just released the first official image of its all-new TL near-luxury sedan, and well, the most we can say at this point is “there it is.” We’ll suspend judgment until we see it firsthand, but for now, all we can say is it shares the controversial styling cues of the 2009 RL.

That said, it does not appear to be as bad as the RL, whose recent ’09 facelift also features Acura’s “guillotine grille” but lacked many changes to the rest of the body to complement it. The TL, however, like the redesigned 2009 TSX, features an entirely new body, and its larger size clearly allowed designers to have more fun with the sculpting along the bodysides and hood, as well as fill the flared wheelwells with some truly massive rolling stock. The slim greenhouse, however, may send Infiniti designers scrambling to get a legal team together to explore copyright infringement.

2009 Acura TL -12009 Acura TL -2Something no one here will complain about are the powertrain enhancements. Acura claims the new TL will be the most powerful TL ever, which we take to mean that it’ll get the RL’s 300-hp 3.7-liter V-6 under the hood. Even more newsworthy is a new all-wheel-drive variant (maybe this will finally tame the TL's torque steer) that incorporates Acura’s sensational “Super Handling” all-wheel-drive system.

Acura remains mum on any other specifics of the next-gen of its best-selling vehicle, and is keeping all other imagery to itself until after its official media release later this summer. It is slated to go on sale in the fall.

2009 BMW PAS spied

BMW has gone to great lengths to disguise its new 5-Series based BMW PAS, completely re-skinning the car to hide its true lines. The initial digital impression certainly relies upon some significant artistic freedom, although you can certainly expect to see a significant resemblance to the new 5-Series along with a similar if not identical engine line-up.

2009 BMW PAS -12009 BMW PAS -2This first real prototype was discovered undergoing testing in southern France amongst a huge entourage of BMW’s. Early reports speculated this would be BMW’s answer to the Mercedes R-Class; however this is not the case.

As these spy shots reveal - the PAS is a true fastback more likened to a sports toured rather than a people mover. It is set to offer a more practical alternative to the BMW X6 while still being considerably smaller than the Mercedes R-Class.

Jaguar celebrates 60 years of XK with the XK60

The original Jaguar XK120 was an impressive car for its time. Introduced at the 1948 London Motor Show, it wooed onlookers with its sleek design and a 3.4-liter straight-six developing 160 horsepower. It's 120 mph top speed made it the world's fastest production car at the time and over the years, other XK's followed the original's footsteps -- the XK140 in 1955 and the XK150 in 1958 -- both named for their top speed capabilities.

Jaguar Then there's the XKSS, the road-going version of the D-Type race car of which only sixteen were produced. Audi Q5 – engine details

Audi is maintaining its successful efficiency strategy: the new Audi Q5, the sports car in the SUV category, is its latest model to combine high performance with low consumption. This progress is underpinned by an extensive package of hi-tech solutions ranging from energy recuperation to engine downsizing.

Audi is bringing the new Q5 onto the market equipped with three powerful, sporty engines – one turbo FSI gasoline version and two TDIs, all of which are state-of-the-art units featuring turbocharging and direct fuel injection. The perfect interplay of these two technologies paves the way for downsizing, which involves using supercharging as a means of trimming engine capacity. This enables the Q5 to achieve CO2 emissions of less than 200 grams per kilometer (321.87 g/mile).

The new 2.0 TFSI, the successor to the engine that was voted “Engine of the Year” four times in a row, is an object lesson in efficiency. The performance of this four-cylinder engine, which develops 155 kW (211 hp) and 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) of torque, puts it in the same league as conventional six-cylinder engines. Yet its fuel consumption averages only 8.5 liters per 100 kilometers (27.67 US mpg) – giving it a clear advantage over its competitors.

The TDI engines fit in with Audi’s downsizing strategy. The four-cylinder diesel develops an impressive 125 kW (170 hp) from its two-liter engine. It delivers 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft)
of torque and covers 100 kilometers on an average of just 6.7 liters of fuel (35.11 US mpg) in the Audi Q5. The top diesel in the Q5 is the 3.0 TDI, a V6 with an output of 176 kW (240 hp) and a massive 500 Nm (368.78 lb-ft) of torque. Its average consumption over 100 kilometers is just 7.5 liters (31.36 US mpg).

The high torque values at low revs have allowed the engineers to select slightly higher transmission ratios without undermining dynamic performance. The peak torque is achieved at a very early point on all engines in the Audi Q5 – the 2.0 TFSI, for instance, already achieves its 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) at 1,500 rpm, barely above idle speed. The Q5 thus handles supremely well at low revs – with correspondingly good fuel efficiency.

2003 Fiat Marrakech Concept

(from Fiat Press Release) Concept Cars Fiat Marrakech

All eyes at the Swiss show will be on the Fiat Marrakech and Fiat Simba. These two concept cars, built on the 'Project 169' base, exemplify the versatility of the new compact car.

The name Marrakech conjures up a picture of desert dunes and also evokes an idea of holidays in the widest sense of the word: as an expression of pleasurable, carefree days where the fun is as much about getting there as arriving. Its compact shape makes you want to reach out and hug it. At just 3.57 metres long, 1.61 metres wide and 1.48 metres high with a wheelbase of 2.30 metres, it would not be difficult to imagine it threading its way through tiny streets. Its dune-buggy looks would be just as at home cavorting in the open air or on the beach of a smart resort on the Cфte d'Azure.

2003 Fiat Marrakech -12003 Fiat Marrakech -2This is no mere coincidence because the Fiat prototype has borrowed certain traits from the famous dune buggy of the Sixties. from its open body to its low, windowless doors (easier to climb over than through), tubework to protect passengers and four drive wheels. The prototype comes with four wheel drive (4x4 system with viscous coupling) and 16" wheels with 205/50 tyres.

An all-terrain look that leaves little room for doubt: the Marrakech is the ideal companion for extreme fun. Friends are welcome to join in too, because it can easily accommodate four people.
The Fiat concept car arouses emotions and guarantees driving satisfaction while giving you the will to live life to the full.

2008 Dodge Avenger

Dodge figures the full-size Charger's styling will work just as well on a mid-size car. And so we have the Avenger, which basically looks like a three-quarter-scale Charger. Mechanically, the Avenger is a twin to the Chrysler Sebring sedan, sharing its underpinnings and powertrains. And like the Sebring, the Avenger hopes to out-value the Honda Accord, the Nissan Altima, and the Ford Fusion. To that end, the Avenger starts at$18,895--$1605 less than an outgoing Stratus but with $985 more content.

2008 Dodge Avenger-12008 Dodge Avenger-2The Avenger's cabin is spacious enough for two six-foot, two-inch occupants to sit one behind the other in comfort. Perceived quality is a big step up from other recent Chrysler efforts, and the unique dashboard architecture is characterful. Other neat cabin touches include the Chill Zone (a beverage cooler mounted in the dash) and MyGig (an optional audio, navigation, and entertainment system that allows you to download music and photos to a hard drive).

The driving experience is not nearly so cool. The 2.4-liter four moves the beast along reasonably well, but those expecting a performance hit from the V-6-powered R/T (man, does that badge set up expectations, or what?) will be disappointed. At least the six-speed automatic is smooth and fast-reacting, especially in manual mode.

Eventually, there will be an Dodge Avenger SRT, but Dodge hasn't decided yet whether it will use a blown version of the 3.5-liter V-6 or a higher-displacement V-6. It'll almost certainly be all-wheel drive, an option that arrives by July for R/T models.

This new Avenger won't be rewriting any rules for the mid-size class. At best, it's an alternative with a uniquely American accent.

Ford Fiesta Zetec S

It hasn’t even hit UK roads yet, but Ford is already chasing the warm hatch pack with the Fiesta Zetec S.

The Zetec S will sit at the top of the new Fiesta range when the car is launched in October, keeping the throne warm until the true king arrives – the scorching Fiesta ST.

Ford Fiesta Zetec S-1Ford Fiesta Zetec S-2But the pretender will not be short on thrills, thanks to an all-new 118bhp 1.6-litre Duratec petrol engine. Designed to deliver a great mix of performance and economy, 0-62mph is dealt with in 9.9 seconds, CO2 emissions are a scant 139g/km and a gallon of fuel should be enough for almost 50 miles.

It might not be quite as outlandish as its RS siblings, but the Zetec S will stand out from the hatchback crowd thanks to a dynamic body kit, including deeply-sculpted flanks, jagged side skirts and an aerodynamic splitter.

Both handling and safety will benefit from improved torsional rigidity over the last car – all new Fiestas will be ten per cent stiffer than their predecessors. 55 per cent of the body structure will be fabricated from high-strength steel, so the Fiesta will be less prone to body roll and much more resilient to impact.

The new Fiesta will be officially unveiled at this month’s UK motor show, but in the meantime make sure you pick up Auto Express issue 1,021 – on sale Wednesday 16th July – for all the details on the Zetec S and the rest of the range.

BMW X3 spied

The current BMW X3 will soldier on for at least the next few years until the arrival of an all-new model towards the end of the decade. Nonetheless, these are the very first spy-shots of Munich’s compact SUV, snapped undergoing road tests outside the Nürburgring.

The new X3’s dimensions will hardly change compared with the current car and its styling will be shaped to reflect elements from the CS Concept. The basic shape will remain much the same, however the new model is expected to feature a more prominent grille plus new wraparound headlights.

BMW X3 -1BMW X3 -2Designers will also focus on improving the quality of the interior, as the new X3 will be facing stiff competition from the recently unveiled new Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLK.

Production of the X3 will be moved to BMW’s Spartanburg plant in the U.S. where it will be built alongside the new X6 and X5. Expect to see the twin-turbo 3.0-litre from the 335i make its way into the X3 range as well as the powerful but frugal new 152kw 2.0-litre turbodiesel.

Opel Flextreme Concept

When the Volt concept was first unveiled, GM was not sure how to badge European versions of the E-Flex cars. Apparently, the decision has been made and the first Euro-bound EV's from GM will be badged as Opels, with a Vauxhall version coming shortly thereafter. All three models of the E-Flex chassis will be built in Detroit atop the next-gen Delta compact car platform which was designed to carry a large lithium ion battery pack along with a range-extending engine. Though the Europeans would likely favor a diesel powerplant, it seems that the first-generation of all three E-Flex vehicles will use a gasoline-powered engine for on-the-fly battery recharging.

Opel Flextreme Concept-1Opel Flextreme Concept-2It goes without saying that the Volt and its Euro-clones will be the most expensive vehicles built on the Delta platform, with U.S. pricing estimated to be at least $40 grand. Across the pond, the Opel and Vauxhall E-Flex's will be saddled with at least a 10,000 euro premium. The price of gasoline, which is significantly higher in Europe than in the States, along with any government assistance for purchasers of the EVs, will determine how quickly customers will recoup that added investment.

Updated Mazda RX-8 will be starting in late August

Buyers in the U.K. are about to get their first crack at the revised 2009 Mazda RX-8, as the quad-door sportscar officially goes on sale in late August. All RX-8's destined for the U.K. will get the full body-kit that's optional in other markets. We've already seen all the images of the only rotary-powered mass market car in the world that we can stand, so lets move on to what's changed under the skin. Shorter final drive gearing combined with a steeper (numerically lower) sixth gear will allow the high-strung engine to reach its power-band earlier in gears one through five while still maintaining reasonable revs when cruising in sixth. New Recaro sport seats spice up the cabin and 19-inch rims with rotor-shaped spokes add some flair to the exterior.

2009 Mazda RX-8Though power levels remain unchanged, the Renesis rotary engine sees minor revisions as well, with improved cooling as one main feature. Also updated are the oil metering pump -- all rotary engines ingest oil during normal operation -- and computer software which limits high-speed operation until the velvety-smooth powerplant has reached a proper operating temperature, likely to improve reliability somewhat. All in all, the '09 update of the sports coupe is pretty thorough, though the result is still instantly recognizable as an RX-8.

2008 Lotus Eco Elise

(from Lotus Press Release) Trackday Warrior Turns Eco Warrior

Lotus unveils the Eco Elise technology demonstrator at the British Motor Show, capitalising on great strides forward in green technology. The Eco Elise project promotes a different perspective on green, one which does not revolve solely around tailpipe CO2. This holistic approach is in keeping with the progressive Lotus culture, driving Lotus to become the worlds green automotive consultancy.

2008 Lotus Eco EliseSustainable materials, hemp, eco wool and sisal have been developed for body panels and trim and, combined with hi-tech water based paint solutions, showcase new affordable green technologies. The green credentials of the technology on show in the Eco Elise have been analysed throughout the lifecycle of the car. A green gear change display has been integrated into the dashboard to promote greener driving as well as a weight reduction programme, illustrating the holistic approach taken. The energy expended to manufacture the car has been evaluated, working to the 3Rs - Reduce, Re-use and Recycle.

Mike Kimberley, CEO of Group Lotus plc commented "This Eco Elise is a great example of the advanced and affordable green technologies Lotus is developing. We are at the cutting edge of environmental technology and are determined to push forward with our green agenda. The Lotus brand values of lightweight, fuel efficient, and high performance are more relevant today than they ever have been. We are keen to ensure that Lotus as a company and its products offer an ethical, green option that appeals to our customers".

In keeping with the performance through light weight philosophy, the Eco Elise weighs 32 kg (70.5 lbs) less than the standard Elise S, which means that the efficient Elise S engine in the Eco Elise will give higher fuel economy figures and even better performance. Dramatic improvements to the culture and operations at Lotus has rewarded the company with staggering reductions in energy (Electricity 14%, Gas 30%) and water (11%) consumed across the Hethel headquarters in 2007, compared to 2006. These advances have coincided with improvements in recycling, with 57% of waste product now being recycled.

The new green materials sourced for this car have been carefully studied to ensure that each technology used reduces the environmental impact of the vehicle. The life of the components has been analysed; during the production stage, in-use and at the end of the vehicles life. The technology used aims to offer lower emissions of both solvents and CO2 in the lifecycle of the vehicle, with reductions in energy consumed during manufacture. The Eco Elise will be displayed in the Greener Driving Pavilion at the British International Motor Show from 23rd July until 3rd August. The project displays affordable green technology that is intended to be feasible and production viable in the near term future.

2010 Porsche Cayenne CGI computer images

Computer graphic artists have put together what we believe the next-generation Porsche Cayenne will look like. The images are generated based on a series of spy photos that have shown up in recent times.

2010 Porsche Cayenne CGI -12010 Porsche Cayenne CGI -2The Cayenne was originally released in 2002 and many say it went a long way to improve Porsche’s financial issues. The German powerhouse shares this platform with the Volkswagen Touareg the Audi Q7. Once again the Cayenne will be the first of the three new SUVs with a release date of about the first half of 2010. Its cheaper brother, the Touareg, isn’t due to make an appearance until late 2010 at the earliest.

Germany’s Automobilwoche magazine reports that Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking is using his ever increasing control stake of the VW Group to rush projects that would favour Porsche, even if it disadvantages parent company Volkswagen. The new Cayenne will address fuel efficiency issues with a hybrid and diesel model in the line-up.

2009 Ford Fiesta XR4 & Cabrio CGI

2009 Ford Fiesta XR4 2009 Ford Fiesta Cabrio CGIRumours regarding a topless Ford Fiesta are still unconfirmed and the blue oval has not released a Cabrio Fiesta for some time.

The new XR4/ST variant is expected to carry a powerplant similar to the 2.0-litre engine unit currently available in the XR4, although some sources suggest Ford may go with a smaller capacity but turbocharged engine as part the company’s eco-boost policy.

2009 Lincoln MKZ

As with most cars these days, there's nothing glaringly wrong with the 2009 Lincoln MKZ. It rides smoothly, handles well, accelerates with alacrity and comes well-equipped even in base form. However, much the same could be said of the Ford Fusion, on which the MKZ is based. The problem is that Lincoln simply hasn't done enough to distinguish the MKZ from its competent but commonplace platform-mate.

2009 Lincoln MKZSure, the MKZ receives the full Lincoln styling treatment inside and out -- but the younger demographic isn't likely to approve of the MKZ's chromed-out mug and staid retro-themed interior. And under the skin, it's basically a Fusion with 42 extra horsepower. That might be a good thing if the MKZ were a family sedan, but Lincoln is sending it into battle against heavy hitters like the Acura TL, Lexus ES350, Nissan Maxima and VW Passat. As competent as the MKZ is in most respects, it can't match the upscale ambience and dynamic excellence of these models.

Of course, the Acura and Lexus are also related to family sedans from parent companies Honda and Toyota, respectively. But the difference is that Acura and Lexus have worked overtime to dial out that family-sedan feel. Drive those models back to back with their plebian progenitors and you'll be struck by how much they've been transformed. Drive the MKZ back to back with the Fusion, though, and you likely won't notice much beyond the restyled interior and some additional get-up-and-go.

To Lincoln's credit, the MKZ offers a slew of standard luxury items, with electronic stability control belatedly joining the list for 2009. All-wheel drive is also available, which can't be said of many competitors. And then there's the price; if you want one, chances are you'll be able to get a pretty good deal. Indeed, if you knock a few grand off the MKZ's MSRP, it stacks up nicely against well-optioned family sedans. But at the end of the day, that's really all the 2009 Lincoln MKZ is -- a well-optioned family sedan. For a true premium ownership experience, we'd recommend looking elsewhere.

2011 Ford C-Max Spied

With gas prices at record highs, automakers are scrambling to develop more fuel efficient models. While some automakers are developing all-new cars from scratch, Ford realized that it didn’t have to look any farther than its current European lineup for fuel-saving models. One of those models that will be making the trek across the pond is the Blue Oval’s C-Max, which are spy photographers just spotted while testing in the wild.

2011 Ford C-Max -12011 Ford C-Max -2Based on the C1 platform — the same that currently underpins the Euro-spec Ford Focus — the next-generation Ford C-Max will be arriving in the States for the 2011 model year, along with the European versions of the Focus and Kuga. But what we’re seeing here is a mule: a well-modified shell of the current C-Max, hiding evidence of the all-new C-Max underneath.

Currently we don’t know exactly what will power the upcoming C-Max when it arrives in the states, but we’re expecting the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine from the Focus to find its way to the to-of-the-line version.

Citroen C3 Picasso exclusive pictures

Citroen today announces the C3 Picasso, a supermini-MPV it claims has the innovative magic of the company’s DS masterpiece, the ‘useful and beautiful’ approach of Apple’s iPhone and the unblinking practicality needed to wound the market-leading Vauxhall/Opel Meriva.

The spacious, eye-catching MPV goes on UK sale in summer 2009. It’s based on the next-generation C3 supermini, and runs four-cylinder engines turning the front wheels. Expect a starting price just under £11,000.

Citroen C3 Picasso-1Citroen C3 Picasso-2Citroen C3 Picasso-3Citroen C3 Picasso-4‘The C3 Picasso is more than an MPV, it’s so innovative,’ said Gilles Michel, Citroen boss, who announced the car during a press conference this morning (8 July 2008). Actually, it’s not that innovative but the package is superbly focused on satisfying the punter.

Citroen has designed the C3 Picasso with unbending, Teutonic discipline, to give it class-leading practicality. CAR was treated to a sneak preview last month, and sat through a presentation which compared the baby Picasso’s metrics with key rivals the Vauxhall Meriva, Ford Fusion, Nissan Note and Renault Grand Modus.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X - first steer

A supercar for the masses – well with Mitsubishi’s Lancer Evolution X it comes about as close to that as you are ever likely to get – this is one brilliant motor car that we believe excites from the moment you clap eyes on it. From the purposeful stance to the throaty note when you fire the engine, the Evo X – Mitsubishi’s 10th iteration of its rally-bred performance car – is something special. Not that its humbler origins aren’t apparent in the neatly designed but still a bit too plastic interior that cannot be disguised by the leather and cloth Recaro seats.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X But let’s cut to the chase, fire the 2.0-litre, twin cam, four-cylinder engine with its twin-scroll turbocharger that generates an impressive 217kW of power at 6500rpm and 366Nm of torque at 3500rpm, slip the gear lever into first and if you’re lucky enough to have the all-new Twin Clutch Sport Shift Transmission (official acronym TC-SST) at your disposal, simply nail the throttle pedal and hang on – because all hell is about to break loose.

With everything in the right setting performance is quite literally shattering, Mitsubishi is coy about 0-100km/h times but we believe they’ve recorded something close to 5.6 seconds and we also believe that under optimum conditions this car could go close to or under the 5.0sec mark.
Stopping is equally improved with huge Brembo brakes front and rear. Both the Lancer Evolution and MR models employ the same size rotors (350mm diameter in front and 330mm diameter in the rear), and the MR uses new two-piece rotor construction to reduce weight. Both use four-piston callipers in front and two-piston callipers in the rear. There is so much in this car that is new, innovative or just a little bit exotic – like the aluminium roof, bonnet and front guards - that it’s hard to know where to start.

Something that’s immediately apparent is the change in the ride and handling, not in any bad way, the car rides firmly but with a civilised degree of control that means you can cruise around town without needing to see a chiropractor when you step out of the car.

The Evolution X has impressive brake, razor sharp steering and the rework of the suspension has made a hard riding performance car into a rocket quick performance car that now offers a new-found level of ride, handling and comfort – while sacrificing nothing of what it had before.
There just remains one final question – is it better than its nemesis the Subaru WRX STi?

Well, you can bet that we will be putting them together to answer the challenge, but the Evolution X runs rings around the WRX STi – not just because of the twin clutch gearbox but it handles and rides better – and it looks better too. Evolution X will be on sale at the end of this month through Mitsubishi’s 80 Ralliart dealers.

Maybach Exelero for $7.8 million

Big-bucks enthusiasts annoyed that they're not the only ones at the club with a Veyron can now ensure that they arrive in total exclusivity. That's because the one-off Maybach Exelero, commissioned by Fulda to act as a high-profile demonstrator for its tire line of the same name, is now for sale. The Exelero isn't some delicate flower of a show car.

Maybach Exelero-1Maybach Exelero-2Based on the Maybach 57 and powered by a 700-horsepower version of that car's turbocharged V12, the Exelero reached 218 mph at Nardo. In many ways, Exelero represents what Maybach could have and should have been -- a place where daring styling and incredible performance could merge with extreme luxury to compete with Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Instead, while the marque's sedans clearly get the luxury part of the equation right, in terms of styling, they basically work in anonymity, looking like peculiar old S-Class sedans. There's nothing anonymous about the Exelero, though, and for €5,000,000 (around $7.8 million USD), you can drive the sybaritic supercar that Daimler should have given Maybach all along.

2010 Toyota Prius - Car News

Toyota, a ship so buttoned down it makes the recently departed William F. Buckley Jr. look like Huey Newton, has no plans for radical upheaval. The current Prius is a sellout in all its five-door jelly-bean frumpiness, so the car scheduled to be revealed at the 2009 Detroit auto show will be tweaked mainly to answer minor customer beefs with the current jelly bean. It will be slightly larger, a bit more spacious inside, and trimmed with more luxury options. The engine will grow and become a tad snappier in its sprint while returning even better fuel economy. A plug-in model should arrive in 2010.

2010 Toyota Prius-12010 Toyota Prius-22010 Toyota Prius-3Prius is Latin for “prior” or “to go before.” By Toyota’s accounting, the 2010 Prius is the little car’s fourth generation. The prius Priuses include the first Japanese-market version, on sale in December 1997, and the U.S. derivative that arrived in 2001. The redesigned hatchback Prius debuted worldwide in 2004 and elevated the hybrid into a household word, an environmental declaration akin to putting a compost pile in your Jacuzzi, and a staple of celebrity driveways. But sales are really riveted to pump prices. They jumped from 54,000 in 2004 to 181,000 last year. As of May, the Prius was on track to book more than 190,000 sales in 2008.

In general, claims Toyota, customers are happy with the current car, so the basic five-door hatchback silhouette remains, and the changes have to do with details. The roof height will stay the same, but the nose, tail, and wheelbase will grow slightly, and the track will be wider. Larger, more extravagantly sculpted headlights will be highlighted by additional trim tinsel to brighten its smile. However, the front and rear views will remain familiar. Toyota wants people to recognize the Prius as a Prius.

The “Hybrid Synergy Drive,” with its twin electric motors and continuously variable planetary-gear transmission, will carry over as conceptually unchanged but with improved power from its electric motors and a larger 1.6-liter, Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder in place of the current 1.5-liter unit, which dates to the old Toyota Echo. Power output will rise modestly, though Toyota promises even better fuel economy than the current car’s 48-city/45-highway EPA numbers.

Limited supplies of the nickel-metal hydride batteries have held back Prius production, but a new factory in Japan due to go on line in 2010 should break the logjam and create capacity for more hybrid models. Indeed, Toyota also plans to unveil another hybrid besides the Prius at the Detroit show in January.

The price will float above the current $22,160 base price but only modestly. Expect a loaded Prius to top out $1000 or so above the $29,692 for a fully loaded 2008 Prius. Hitting the road in 2010 will be Toyota’s first plug-in Prius. Customers want more drive time in pure electric mode, but the current Prius can’t deliver for various reasons, including battery longevity. The plug-in Prius will address that through the use of more-powerful lithium-ion batteries, but plans are to limit volume strictly, at least at first, to hundreds of units rather than thousands.

2008 Project Kahn Bentley GTS Black Edition-12008 Project Kahn Bentley GTS Black Edition-2The ‘Black Edition’ package contains a full interior styling programme which includes a bespoke Project Kahn Luxury Leather upgrade and high gloss piano black interior fascia panels with the optional extras of either a high gloss piano black steering or a carbon fibre finish steering wheel. Each car comes with privacy tinted glass perfectly matched to compliment the cars exterior.

To complete the ‘low to the road’ aggressive stance the ‘black edition’ is fitted with a Project Kahn electronic lowering module. As standard the suspension is lowered by 20mm but this can be adjusted according to the customers’ requirements.

Each ‘Black Edition’ is fitted with the Project Kahn GTS sports exhaust system which provides a slight increase in performance whilst accelerating but more importantly emits a unique sound emanating from the car as a deep rumble.

However the most unique feature of the ‘Black Edition’ is the addition of the new ‘Silver Mist’ alloy wheel.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SLK350

It looks like a Mini-Me version of the SL coupe/roadster. A face-lifted front end leads things off, with a splitter reminiscent of the SLR’s nosecone. New wings flank the M-B tri-pointed star in the grille, along with angular cuts under the bumper for a look that reminds one of the front wings on Lewis Hamilton’s F1 car. These in turn, lead the eyes back along sculpted sides to the short overhang rear bustle of the SLK.

Along the way, new mirrors with revised directional indicators, and a pair of tinted taillights offer visual distinction to the body. And that’s just with the hardtop convertible roof stowed in the trunk. By the way, cargo space in the trunk is 10 cubic feet with the roof up, and 6.5 cubic feet with it stowed.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SLK350An amalgam of old world craftsmanship coupled with high tech touches resides in the cockpit of the SLK. Newly aluminum-adorned speedo- and tachometers reside in front of the driver. Beautiful burled walnut trim and butterscotch tan leather surrounds the doors and dash to create a perimeter that, at least visually, holds you in place. The accents continue with the same burled walnut highlighting the shift knob, brake handle and door grabs.

Space is at a premium throughout the SLK but that is the nature of the beast in the world of personal-sized sports cruisers. Open the dashboard to find a smallish-sized glove box, which also contains an optional connectivity kit that enables iPod control on the head unit of the NTG Generation 2.5 audio system. An optional harman/kardon Logic 7 audio system is also available. A second storage cubby rests at the rear of the cockpit above the center console.

The leather seats are extremely supportive. Equipped with M-B’s Air Scarf neck heaters, we had no need to try them in July in South Florida, but after extended drive time through the mountains in Palms Springs, California, we can attest to the fact that “topless” driving is fun even with temperatures hovering in the high 30-degree range.

Mercedes-BenzSLK 350 is the answer to a sporty need for a city car that gets decent highway mileage without having to pony up the cash for the big-brother (and big-ticketed) SL roadster.

2009 Kia Sportage facelift – Spied

The Kia Sportage will be undergoing a facelift for the 2009 model year, including minor updates to the front and rear fascias. We’re expecting slight revisions to the headlamps and taillights. In addition, our spies spotted some interior freshening — although they weren’t able to get good picture inside the Sportage.

2009 Kia Sportage-12009 Kia Sportage-2It’s also unclear if the crossover will receive any mechanical changes, such as new engines, transmissions, or chassis upgrades. The basic version of the Sportage ships with a 140 horsepower inline-four, while the more powerful V6 variant delivers 173 horsepower.

The current iteration of the Sportage was introduced in 2005, after a two-year hiatus from the previous model. Watch for the freshened Sportage to arrive at dealerships during the third quarter of the year.

BMW 5 Series Interior Spied

Spy photographers have caught the interior in clear view of the new BMW 5 Series for first time. Even with a significant amount of specially cut foam padding used to disguise the instrument panel and center console from prying eyes, we can still make out some new details.

The i-Drive controller is placed on the right side of the gear lever, and similar to Audi's MMI interface, there are additional navigation/function buttons surrounding the controller. Also similar to Audi are the new buttons and scroll wheels on the totally new steering wheel. Sitting at the base of the gear selector console is a big button with a “(P)” for the electronic parking brake.

BMW 5 Series -1BMW 5 Series -2The shape of the dashboard is also brand new, although the two circular recesses on the passenger side are fake as well as the old i-Drive controller location. The real deal is more like, you guessed it, the Audis.

Keyless-go, active suspension, improved night vision, head-up display and a bigger sat nav screen are all features that we will find in the new 5 Series. Due to all of the heavy plastic panels, the exterior is still hard to recognize, but at least we can now see the actual size of the characteristic BMW twin kidney grilles.

The new F10 5-Series will be available as sedan, touring (wagon) and fastback, although the later will have its own name (still going under the work name PAS). Four-wheel-drive as an option will be available for all three versions as well as a new 8-speed electronic automatic transmission.

The new F10 5-Series is expected launch in spring 2010 as a 2011 model.

Seat Ibiza SportCoupe – review

New Seat Ibiza hatchback hasn’t even gone on sale in the UK, and already the Spanish car maker is showing off the three-door version- the Seat Ibiza SportCoupe. The Seat Ibiza SportCoupe has a unique profile – designed under the watchful eye of ex-Lamborghini design chief Luc Donckerwolke – and the first application of the VW Group's seven-speed DSG semi-automatic gearbox.

The Seat Bocanegra was one of the stars of the 2008 Geneva motor show - but even so, few expected the Spanish manufacturer to put the car in production, relatively unchanged

Seat Ibiza SportCoupe-1Seat Ibiza SportCoupe-2Despite the lower profile, the SportCoupe still offers adequate headroom up front – although taller drivers might struggle – and a reasonable boot. At 284 litres it's far from the biggest, but swallowed two small suitcases and a laptop bag easily on our test drive.

Seat also revealed a pair of hot hatches will go on sale next year: FR and Cupra, which will both feature the VW Group's 1.4-litre TSI engine. This boasts a turbocharger and supercharger, and Seat told Auto Trader the cars' power will be in excess of 150 and 180bhp for the FR and Cupra respectively.

A low-emission Ecomotive version will also join the line up; and although exact specifications are yet to be confirmed, it will produce less than 100g/km of CO2.

The Seat Ibiza SportCoupe scored a full five star rating in the EuroNCAP crash test programme for adult occupant protection, four for child safety and three for protecting pedestrians. It counts ESP, head thorax side airbags (a first in the supermini class) and side curtain airbags among the safety kit.

Seat offer the Ibiza SportCoupe in three trim levels: Reference, Stylance and Sport. All models feature anti-trap electric front windows, remote central locking and a six speaker MP3-compatible CD player as standard.

Peugeot 504 - the future recalls the past

The brand’s epiphany will take place from this model. During an interview with Auto Bild, Jerome Gallix, design manager for the Peugeot brand, reveals moves to revive company heritage with a new family. The first to debut will be a re-edition of the of 504 coupé, originally designed by Pininfarina in 1969. The rendering, supplied by the manager, confirms the news.

Peugeot 504 -1Peugeot 504 -2This top range two door, according to the first reconstructions, will have a similar length to the 407 coupé, while engines and technological (air suspension first up), will be inherited from the C5. We also remind you that Gallix has presided over the lines of the 308 RC-Z, a muscular guarantee.

Other news give some more substance to the romanticism of the idea, with the designer claiming “I’m an admirer of the old 204 and 205, and I don’t exclude the possibility of examining them, in such a way as to lower the average CO2 emissions of the Peugeot range.”

Ford Focus RS concept

The Focus RS will be equipped with a tweaked version of the turbocharged Duratec 2.5-liter inline-five found in the ST, and will send between 280 and 300 hp, along with 300+ lb.-ft. of torque, through the front wheels via a six-speed gearbox equipped with a Quaife limited-slip differential. With that kind of power, the RS should be able to make the run to 60 in less than six seconds – assuming you don't torque-steer yourself into a tree in the process.

Ford Focus RS concept-1Ford Focus RS concept-2The dynamic body kit, complete with gaping maw, flared fenders, side sills, rear diffuser and wing, and unfortunate fender vents, compliments the lowered ride height, 19-inch, 15-spoke wheels and upgraded brakes. 2010 Jaguar XJ

Jaguar’s restyled version of the slow-selling sedan. In this chapter, long-running Brit traditions are tossed in the dustbin and replaced with a design inspired by the company’s new style indicator, the XF.

Sales in the U.S. are circling the loo. Now that Indian conglomerate Tata owns Jag, the company will need fresh models to spice up the brand.

2010 Jaguar XJ-12010 Jaguar XJ-2Platform: The lightweight aluminum structure of the current XJ soldiers on with only minor changes to accommodate the new body.

Powertrain: New direct-injection versions of the existing Jaguar V-8 engine. Base versions should make 350 horsepower. The supercharged engine is bumped to 5.0 liters and 500 horsepower.

New looks could turn off stuffy traditionalists, whereas potential converts might not even notice. Also, the uncertainty surrounding Jaguar’s long-term future could undermine sales.

Production is to begin at the end of 2009 with an on-sale date at the start of 2010. Pricing should remain in line with the current XJ’s, at $65,000 to $90,000.

Audi R8-TT

Do you own a TT but hanker after an R8? If so, Siegen-based tuner B&B has the answer. Yes, why bother trading up when you can transform your TT into this?!

Audi R8-TT-1Audi R8-TT-2OK, so the B&B TT is no looker - but the engine stats make interesting reading. With various inlet, exhaust and turbo modifications, B&B has squeezed 362bhp out of the 2.0-litre TFSI four-cylinder engine.

The result is a 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds - the same as an R8 - and a top speed of 175mph. That's 12mph shy of Audi's supercar. Adjustable suspension is also fitted, as are a set of 20-inch wheels.

2008 BMW Z0 Concept Design by Andrei Avarvarii

(from Andrei Avarvarii) Designed by Romanian fresh industrial design graduates Andrei Avarvarii (exterior design) and Adrian Vasiliu (interior design) the BMW Z0 project is a sports car for the next decade.

The fuel-challenged years ahead are a real threat to the traditional driver’s machine. However we think that, by going back to the roots of the automobile, we were able to create a smart, efficient and environment friendly sports car.

2008 BMW Z0 ConceptFor many years the key to performance was the power to weight ratio and not just power. Manufacturers these days seem to have forgotten that and got absorbed in an absurd competition for power.

The Z0 is the proof that less can be better. As the name suggests the car is intended as the smallest sports car produced by BMW. The “0” number signifies that the vehicle is reduced to the essence and it has zero harmful emissions.

The small 1.6 liter turbo hydrogen engine and the 450 kg kerb weight ensure top performance in an affordable package. Modern, yet nostalgic the Z0 is a tribute to the cars designed for the lucky person behind the wheel. The open cockpit offers unfiltered driving pleasure similar to the competition cars.

McLaren SLR Speedster Spied

Mercedes and McLaren were preparing to launch a special lightweight version of their SLR supercar, a batch of spy shots plus a spy video have surfaced, giving us a sneak peek at the limited-edition roadster prior to its anticipated unveiling by McLaren-Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton towards the end of the month.

McLaren SLR Speedster-1McLaren SLR Speedster-2The images – which appear to have been released by the manufacturer itself – confirm our previous report that the roofless supercar will have little in the way of protection from the elements, with an F1-sized wind deflector screen as the only thing between the driver and the wind rushing by at breakneck speeds. Inspired by the original '50's-era 300 SLR, the new speedster will be faster than any previous SLR and be built in a small serial of 75 examples.

Opel Insignia - British Motor Show Preview

GM's European branch is planning a big debut later this month at the British Motor Show in London for one of its most important mainstream models. The new Insignia is replacing the venerable Vectra and brings with it a whole new design language. We got our first preview of the new look on last years GTC and Flextreme concepts. In London, Opel will be displaying hatchback and sedan variants of the Epsilon II-based Insignia, with the sharp edged look of the Vectra replaced with smoother flowing lines and scooped out side panels.

Opel Insignia -1Opel Insignia -2European drivers will have seven engines to choose from including four gas and three diesel models, all with six speed gearboxes. The four- and six-cylinder gas engines range from 115 hp to 260 hp, while the 2.0L diesel fours get 110-160 hp variants. The Insignia will also be available with a version of the Haldex torque vectoring all wheel drive system used on the Saab Turbo-X. GM plans to announce pricing for the new model on July 22 in London with sales later this fall, and don't be surprised if the Insignia makes the trip across the Atlantic and receives a Saturn badge in the process.

2008 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Roadster

For those who can’t quite stretch the budget for the new SL-Class, the next-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadster offers a more conventional balance of price, performance and luxury. Following an extensive facelift incorporating around 650 newly developed components, the updated SLK three-model range begins at a far more obtainable $86,780.

2008 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class RoadsterThe range begins with the SLK 200 KOMPRESSOR, which boasts a four-cylinder supercharged engine producing 135kW and peak torque of 250Nm.

Engine refinements see fuel consumption drop by a substantial 1.2-litres to just 8.0L/100km, which in turn reduces CO2 emissions by 30 g /km to 190 g/km. The mid-range SLK 350 is powered by a high-revving 3.5-litre V6 engine developing 224kW and 360Nm, hitting red line at 7200rpm.

When coupled with the 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission, the SLK 350 consumes just 9.2-litres per 100km - 1.9-litres less than the previous model. The pinnacle of the range is the SLK 55 AMG which features a familiar 5.5-litre V8 power plant delivering 265 kW of power and 510Nm.

The two new models in the SLK range all come with a precision six-speed manual gearshift while the SLK 55 AMG retains the 7G-TRONIC Sport seven-speed automatic transmission.

A newly developed direct-steer system with variable power assistance also makes its debut as standard on the SLK range.

The direct-steer system is derived from the previous speed-sensitive power steering and operates purely mechanically, adjusting the steering gear ratio in tune with the steering angle.

2008 BMW X6 Review

In the past, BMW didn't exactly rush in to follow the trend toward larger, more family-friendly vehicles. Like a fashionable latecomer to a cocktail party, the German automaker launched the BMW X5 a few years into the SUV craze. But when the tide turned and the market clamored for scaled-down utility, BMW was ready with the nimble X3. And now that the crossover has found its way into the lineup of practically every marque in the auto industry, the German automaker steps up to bat with the X6, a four-passenger "Sports Activity Coupe" that BMW hopes will entice customers looking for the superior handling of a sport sedan with the space and functionality of an SUV. And just to clear up any potential confusion: Yes, BMW is calling the X6 a coupe, but that's just pure marketing, as it really does have four doors.

2008 BMW X6-12008 BMW X6-2Underneath the crossover's controversial styling lies the capable, athletic handling BMW is known for. The all-wheel-drive X6 shares the same platform as the X5, with some major differences. Perhaps most significant is the X6's new, optional 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8. It makes 400 horsepower (just a bit shy of what the new M3 puts out) and a beefy 450 pound-feet of torque that peaks as early as 1,750 rpm and doesn't waver until 4,500 rpm. Right now, this is the only BMW you can get with the twin-turbo V8. And it's probably just as well; with a curb weight of nearly 5,300 pounds for the V8 version, the X6 needs the power.

If the BMW X6's weight doesn't shock you, the sticker just might. The X6 starts in the mid-$50,000 range, with the V8 version starting at $8,500 more than the V8-powered X5 4.8i. And for that price premium, you get less rear passenger room and cargo space than the X5. We're hard-pressed to find direct competitors for the X6 save for the '09 Infiniti FX50, which also offers coupelike styling, V8 power and sporty handling -- starting at a few thousand dollars less than the six-cylinder X6. The Range Rover Sport, as well as the Porsche Cayenne S, are priced comparably, but both have more of an SUV look and lack the X6's lower profile. For those willing to fork over considerably more dough for a midsize crossover that's still smaller than the average midsize SUV, the 2008 BMW X6 might make sense.

The AWD 2008 X6 xDrive35i uses a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-6 that makes 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. BMW claims it goes from zero to 60 mph in the low 6-second range. The xDrive50i's 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 packs a 400-hp punch with 450 lb-ft of torque. BMW estimates its 0-60 time to be 5.3 seconds. Both engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control.

2010 Chevrolet Volt Prototype Spied

Chevrolet's Volt plug-in hybrid won't be arriving in showrooms for at least another two years, but a careful eye may spot one of the many development mules testing its hybrid powertrain on public roads.

Our spies did just that, snapping some pictures of the Malibu-bodied test vehicle as GM engineers took it for a spin outside of the automaker's proving grounds. Although the vehicle's body is radically different from the slippery shape the production car will wear, we're told the mechanicals beneath the skin are all Volt-specific and stem not from the Malibu, but from the next-generation Delta small-car platform.

2010 Chevrolet Volt PrototypeThat means we're expecting a small-displacement gasoline motor (possibly a three- or four-cylinder) underhood, partnered with electric drive motors. We'd also expect the car to sport some form of a lithium-ion battery pack, as both Continental and A123 Systems - GM's partners in developing the Volt's batteries - have reportedly delivered prototype packs to GM engineers.

Those batteries are reportedly a large headache in pushing the Volt into production. GM hopes to begin mass production of the car in 2010, but development delays threaten to push that date back by nearly two years. When Volts do arrive in showrooms, the added costs of the lithium-ion batteries may push its price tag to $40,000 - nearly $10,000 more than GM originally suggested.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X attracts premium buyers

New Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X is drawing some unlikely new customers to Mitsubishi from premium German manufacturers as well as other Japanese marques.

A study of Evo X buyers since its launch in the UK this March has revealed some startling statistics - including one owner trading in their supercar for the new rally king.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution XThe research has revealed that 38 percent of Twin Clutch SST buyers have switched over from premium German brands such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes - with a further 31 percent defecting from competing Japanese brands such as Subaru.

Sales of the manual transmission however have been dominated by existing Evo owners, accounting for 40 percent of the total with a further 19 percent from German and 20 percent from Japanese manufacturers respectively.

In an extraordinary case, a Ferrari F430 was traded in at a dealer for a brand new Lancer Evolution X FQ-300 SST along with a cheque for £90,000.

Rolls-Royce Phantom for £1million

Convertibles don’t come much more exclusive than Rolls-Royce’s Phantom Drophead Coupé. And with a price tag of £305,000, it’s a rare sight on UK roads – but that’s not enough for one super-rich collector, who has commissioned this unique machine from legendary Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina.

The one-off car will get a completely new body, as you can see from this striking teaser image. Said to be inspired by pre-war Rolls-Royce models such as the original Phantom, it promises to be even more imposing than the official machine thanks to an aerodynamic shape featuring a swept-back windscreen and sculpted flanks.

Rolls-Royce PhantomRumour has it that the car will carry a fitting badge, too – Hyperion, which comes from ancient Greek mythology and means ‘the god of the sun’. As well as a unique body, the Hyperion is likely to get a bespoke cabin – although it will be interesting to see how Pininfarina ‘improves’ on the already incredibly luxurious four-seater interior of the existing Drophead Coupé.

One area of the car that the coachbuilder is unlikely to touch is the mechanicals. The Hyperion will be powered by the standard 453bhp 6.75-litre V12 engine, resulting in a 0-60mph time of around six seconds and a top speed approaching 150mph.

Given the price of the ‘basic’ Phantom Drophead Coupé, it’s difficult to imagine just how costly the bespoke Rolls-Royce will be – but we suspect that the unnamed owner will be lucky to see any change from £1million. However, the Hyperion is not the first enormously expensive coachbuilt car. It follows in the footsteps of the Ferrari P4/5, a Ferrari Enzo rebodied by Pininfarina in the style of the Prancing Horse’s Sixties’ racers at the request of a US stock magnate, James Glickenhaus.

Not including the ‘donor’ Enzo, the project is rumoured to have cost around £2m. Meanwhile, the wraps are expected to come off the hand-built Hyperion at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in the US in August.

It’s carefree and versatile, and according to Auto Express, author of this rendering, Audi will present the A1 concept car at the next Frankfurt show in September 2009. About 12 months after this open-top, we should see commercial production of the Metroproject Quattro.

Audi A1 Cabrio -1Audi A1 Cabrio -2The declared adversary of the A1 will be the Mini convertible, also to debut next year, which should have a more complex roof system that folds into the boot area.

The Audi A1, a different kettle of fish to the English car, will see an aluminum roof similar to the system adopted by the unlucky A2. The engine range will be completely different though, with a turbo compressor, and a 1.6 aspirated engine as the basis of the range. There will also be the TSI 1.4, the 1.8 and the future jewel in the crown, distinguished by the letter S.

Renault Dacia introduces New Logan

New Dacia Logan will be introduced across the majority of Western European markets from July 2008. In most cases, its entry level price remains unchanged, making it a more appealing proposition than ever.

New Dacia Logan stands out as a modern saloon with more contemporary exterior lines which reflect its robust, quality build. The grille, which first appeared on Dacia Sandero, is bigger and features the brand's new logo, plus a chrome upper trim as standard (except entry level version). The new front bumper is flush with the bodywork for a more integrated, harmonious feel, while the headlights are bigger and the fog lamps come with elegant carbon colour surrounds (depending on version).

Dacia Logan-1Dacia Logan-2The rear design of New Dacia Logan has been updated, too. The design of the new boot lid, which can be trimmed with a lower chrome strip, is more streamlined and its lines have been carried over to the revised rear lights. The rear bumper, too, is now flush with the bodywork and incorporates reflectors and a towing hook complete with concealing cap.

Drivers will appreciate the practical controls, and special care has gone into ensuring that all dashboard information is easy to read. The driving environment itself has been made even more comfortable and driverfriendly thanks to a new driver's seat adjustment control (depending on version) and a height-adjustable steering column (depending on version). Rear visibility has been improved through the fitment of a comma-type central rear headrest and large format door mirrors. These have been carried over from Dacia Logan MCV and are standard equipment on New Dacia Logan.

The 1.4 MPI 75hp, 1.6 MPI 90hp and 1.6 16V 105hp all comply with the criteria of cost, robustness and ease of maintenance that are a feature of the Dacia brand. They combine generous torque from low revs with thrifty fuel consumption: 7.0, 7.2 and 7.1 litres/100km respectively.

The 1.5 dCi stands out as a benchmark in the diesel engine field thanks to the use of such advanced technologies as second-generation common-rail direct injection which delivers both high performance and extremely low fuel consumption. The 1.5 dCi is available in 70hp form and a punchier 85hp version, while CO2 emissions of 120g/km point to the 1.5 dCi 70hp and 1.5 dCi 85hp engines' ecological credentials.

New Dacia Logan will be produced in Pitesti, Romania. Total investment amounted to €27 million and the development teams remained true to the Logan spirit by investing solely in what was strictly necessary to continue delivering the best possible equipment and performance at an attractive price. Indeed, the entry level price for New Dacia Logan remains unchanged in the majority of the countries where it is sold.

Audi R8 DTM safety car

Audi has announced that its superlative R8 sportscar will serve as the safety car for the ever-popular DTM touring car championship, having also served in the same capacity for the recently-concluded 24 Hours of Le Mans. 2009 Mercury Milan Review

Predictably, the Milan and Fusion share similar strengths and weaknesses. Like its blue-oval brother, the Milan is based on a stretched version of the outgoing Mazda 6 platform, which enables the midsize Mercury to combine the 6's athleticism with appreciably more passenger room. Unlike many of its competitors, the Milan also offers all-wheel drive on V6-powered models, a significant selling point for shoppers residing in colder climes. And we can no longer criticize Mercury for skimping on stability control -- it's available on every 2009 Milan. The optional Sync multimedia interface, a Ford family exclusive, is another feather in the Milan's cap.

2009 Mercury MilanThere's only one area where the Milan could really use some improvement, and that's under the hood. Neither the base four-cylinder engine nor the optional V6 make the refined noises we expect to hear in modern family sedans, and they're down on power, too. This would be easier to swallow if there were a payoff in efficiency, but there's not -- the Milan's fuel-economy numbers are middling at best. Otherwise, though, the Milan is quite enjoyable from behind the wheel, featuring above-average handling along with a commendably cushioned ride.

There's no doubt that the 2009 Mercury Milan is a solid all-around midsize sedan. Trouble is, perennial favorites like the Honda Accord and Nissan Altima offer superior four- and six-cylinder engines while matching the Milan in all other respects, save for the Milan's available AWD. However, the Milan is more affordable than those models, and it is fully competitive with similarly priced competitors like the Chevy Malibu, Hyundai Sonata and Saturn Aura. If you don't want to pay top dollar for your next family sedan, the Milan is certainly worth a look.

The 2009 Mercury Milan's base 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine is rated at 160 horsepower and receives Partial-Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) certification in California and other California-emissions states. It's paired with a standard five-speed manual transmission in the base four-cylinder Milan, while a five-speed automatic is optional on the base model and standard on the Premier.

A 3.0-liter 221-hp V6 is optional on both the base and Premier trims. All V6-equipped Milans receive a six-speed automatic transmission, which is notable for limiting drivers to just two forward-gear gates ("D" and "L"), though many drivers probably won't miss the additional manual control. Four-cylinder Milans are front-wheel drive, while AWD is optional on V6 models.
