2009 Ford Super Cabela's FX4 Edition

Ford is expanding its relationship with Cabela's, the world's largest outdoor outfitter, by offering a new Cabela's FX4 package for 2009. According to customer data, seventy-six percent of F-Series buyers hunt and fish and a key way for Ford to connect with those outdoor enthusiasts is as the official truck of Cabela’s for the last six years with products prominently placed at stores nationwide and featured in Cabela’s publications and TV programming. The Cabela's FX4 package features a unique two-tone paint scheme in five colors: Ebony, Oxford White, Forest Green Metallic, Royal Red Metallic and Silver Metallic with Sterling Grey Metallic lower body accents, running boards and wheel lip moldings. Custom mud flaps and unique Cabela's badging finish off the exterior.

The interior features standard cloth seats with the Cabela's logo or available Aniline leather seats with a unique two-tone embossed grain pattern. All weather floor mats also wear the Cabela's logo. And for the avid outdoor enthusiast, additional lockable storage in the front console and underneath the rear seats is perfect for keeping equipment secure and out of sight.

According to the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), installation of spray-in bedliners grew from 27 percent in 2004 to nearly 34 percent of all pickup trucks in 2006, and will continue to grow at a steady rate to nearly 40 percent in 2008.

Developed in partnership with PPG Industries, Tough Bed exceeds the standards of today's typical aftermarket spray-in bedliner solutions. This military-grade coating has been through the government's toughest blast mitigation testing to determine whether the material can with stand the force of a bomb blast. It has performed equal to or better than other protective coating systems at one-third the thickness.

The special bedliner material formula is immune to the effects of ultraviolet radiation and will not fade or chalk. It also protects against physical damage to the pickup box such as gouging, scratching, cracking and chipping. It is covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile factory limited warranty. 2008 Peugeot 207 HDi LeMans

To honour its long tradition of motorsport success, Peugeot Australia has secured a limited run of just 75 examples of the special edition 207 “Le Mans Series”. Based on the Peugeot 207 HDi - paying homage to its recent diesel-powered endurance racers, the special edition model features a comprehensive list of unique additions.

Buyer’s can choose between two colours - Bianca White and Obsidien Black, with the special edition models boasting a red stripe running down the centre of the car and lion’s head insignia on the doors. The 1.6 HDi engine delivers maximum power of 80kW maximum torque of 240Nm from just 1750rpm. Equipped with a Diesel Particle Filter System (FAP), fuel consumption is just 4.8 litres per 100km in the combined cycle, while emitting only 126 grams of CO2 per km.

The 207 “Le Mans Series” is distinguished on the exterior with several features as follows:

2009 Mercedes-Benz McLaren 722S Roadster

Mercedes-Benz has revealed details of its astonishingly quick McLaren 722S Roadster, the car named in tribute to the Mercedes-Benz Roadster that Sir Stirling Moss drove to victory in the final Mille Miglia road race in Italy back in the 1950s.

Delivering 478kW, acceleration from 0-to-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and a maximum speed of 335km/h, this two-seater cabriolet, according to Mercedes-Benz, surpasses the existing benchmark among open-top super sports cars – the SLR McLaren Roadster. In addition to increased power, the new SLR McLaren Roadster 722 S features even more dynamic suspension tuning and improved aerodynamics.

At the heart of the SLR Roadster 722 S is a powerful supercharged 5.5-litre, V8-engine, which is hand-built in the Mercedes-AMG engine shop in Affalterbach. The special strengths of this high-performance engine include extraordinary responsiveness to movements of the accelerator, a high torque and an unmistakable V8 sound. The maximum speed is 335km/h, which Mercedes-Benz claims is unrivalled by any other series-production roadster.

With just 150 examples, the Mercedes-Benz McLaren 722S Roadster will be predominantly hand-built at the Formula 1 workshops of McLaren in Woking, England, and the car will be available from January 1, 2009.

Volvo Reduced CO2-Emissions and Lower Fuel Consumption

One of the world's most advanced wind tunnels is Volvo Cars' new tool in the quest for lower fuel consumption and reduced carbon dioxide emissions. Volvo Car Corporation is the first car manufacturer to own a wind tunnel that fully simulates the airflow around and underneath the car's body, combined with wheel rotation on a flat road surface. "Our 20 Million Euro investment is already paying quick dividends. We have succeeded in reducing air resistance in the new Volvo C30 DRIVe by more than 10 percent. This in turn leads to around 3 grams lower CO2 emissions per kilometre," explains Tim Walker, aerodynamics expert at Volvo Cars.



Translated into fuel consumption, this is a reduction by just over 0.1 l/100 kilometres according to the official EU Combined Cycle. In a real driving situation, however, where speed and therefore air resistance are often higher, the actual saving in fuel can be more than twice as high, that is to say in the region of 0.3 l/100 km. This means that a driver who covers 15,000 km per year will save about 45 litres of fuel - almost a full tank in a Volvo C30. It's an economy benefit that is also appreciated by the environment.

"With a firm focus on environmental properties for the foreseeable future, our recently upgraded wind tunnel is going to be a particularly valuable tool. Aerodynamic improvements to the body and underside of the car will help us cut CO2-emissions across the whole model range," says Magnus Jonsson, Senior Vice President, Research & Development at Volvo Cars.

Aston Martin launches DBS auto

Responding to customer requests, Aston Martin has now launched its DBS with an automatic transmission, which it is calling the Touchtronic 2.

Basically, a similar unit to the DB9’s automatic, the Touchtronic 2 is a transaxle ZF transmission which has been upgraded to handle the higher power and torque from the V12 of the DBS. Buttons on the fascia are used to select drive, park and reverse settings, with leather-trimmed magnesium paddles mounted behind the wheel to shift up and down gears. Once a paddle is activated, manual control is selected, with the driver needing to select “Drive” to return to full automatic mode. There is also a “Sport” setting with more aggressive throttle mapping and gear changes.

The 0-100km/h time of 4.3 seconds is unchanged, mainly due to a shortening of the final drive ratio from 3.15:1 to 3.46:1. Top speed of 307km/h is also unchanged.

In addition, the DBS now comes with BeoSound, Bang and Olufsen’s bespoke audio equipment for the DBS. 13 channels, 10 speakers, 1000W - it’s all fitting for Aston Martin.

An optional 2+2 seating configuration will now be offered also, along with new 10-spoke 20-inch wheels with a diamond turned surface, which saves 8kg in unsprung mass.

Pricing on the DBS starts at $497,441 for the manual, and $505,691 for the new Touchtronic 2, excluding on-road costs.

2009 Mazda Mazdaspeed 3

The 2009 Mazdaspeed 3 is sorta like George Foreman, only there's no Mazdaspeed Lean Mean Grilling Machine and it doesn't hawk mufflers for Meineke. Other than that, totally analogous. Even though it's based on the aging 3, the 'Speed 3 keeps knocking out the competition, just like George.

Like any good high-performance special edition, the Mazdaspeed 3 benefits from being based on an excellent car to begin with. Frequently hailed as the most enjoyable car in its class to drive, the regular Mazda 3 lends some very regal bloodlines. The 'Speed 3 takes those genes and adds a turbocharged engine that cranks output up to a sensational 263 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. But the transformation from civilized 3 to "MS3" doesn't stop with the powertrain. In addition to the usual litany of changes like a lowered ride height and firmer springs and dampers, Mazda added various braces to minimize flex during aggressive cornering.

The ability to provide knockout acceleration, excellent handling manners and hatchback practicality at a very reasonable price has made the Mazdaspeed 3 a victor in every comparison test we've put it in. Rivals like the Honda Civic Si, Mini Cooper S, Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart, Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V, Subaru WRX and Volkswagen GTI have all fallen at its feet. While some may offer a little more of this or a tad more of that -- particularly AWD and available automatic transmissions -- the mighty 2009 Mazdaspeed 3 is still the best bet in its weight class.

The Mazdaspeed 3's 2.3-liter turbocharged direct-injection four-cylinder engine pumps out 263 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. All that power is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, the only transmission available. A limited-slip differential and an electronic torque limiter (which regulates the torque based on gear selection and steering position) are used to enhance traction and minimize torque steer.

Acceleration is exhilarating, with the 0-60 sprint taking just 5.9 seconds and a blast through the quarter-mile taking only 14.2 seconds. That turbocharged power takes a toll on fuel economy; the EPA estimates 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined.

Acura MDX Facelift Spied

Honda engineers are hard at work testing a refreshed Acura MDX and seen here are first photos of running prototypes. Design-wise, the major changes seem to be limited to the front end. We can see through the camouflage that a new grill is definitely in the works. It appears to be a very similar grill to the one on the all-new 2009 TL.

We'd speculate that redesigned headlights and a revised lower bumper fascia are also in order, however, it's not clear if there will be any changes under the hood, despite statements from Honda saying they'd like to offer a V6 diesel in the MDX by 2010 or 2011.

Renault Ondelios Concept

It’s no suprise that the French carmakers will do their best to have the most interesting stands at the upcoming Paris Motor Show and so far it seems that Renault has taking the lead. After announcing the new Renault Megane yesterday, today they’ve released details another premiere, the Renault Ondelios. Not the most beautiful concept we’ve seen, the Ondelios is Renault’s interpretation of a high-end crossover.

First thing that stands out is the aluminium-finish grille flanked by headlamp units with LED headlights, the butterfly-type side doors and the boomerang shaped tail lights. “Ondelios is inspired by motion rather than speed and is a whole new response to the call of the open road,” said Patrick Le Quément, Renault’s Design Director.

Meant to be a luxury car, the Ondelios offers all the passengers their own Samsung interactive portable multimedia devices which they can use for sharing data or multiplayer gaming, speakers incorporated into the headrests and a multizone HVAC system enables each passenger to set the temperature to his or her own liking. The dashboard also offers a whole bunch of features, like active display skins showing driver aid and ride information, monitor at the base of the windscreen displays the different menus and pictures from the door mirror cameras, three large strip displays provide driving-related information, revs and how the hybridized drivetrain is operating and a digital speedometer.

The Renault Ondelios is built on a hybrid powertrain, which combines a 205hp (150kW) 2.0 dCi engine, with two 20kW electric motors at the front and rear, mated to a seven-speed, double-clutch gearbox. They operate in mild hybrid mode, giving the engine extra boost as required and use a brake and boost system, recovering energy during braking then delivering it to the engine to boost acceleration. The Ondelios goes from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.8 seconds, while keeping fuel consumption at 4.5 litres/100km (52.2 US mpg) and CO2 emissions at 120g/km.

Future Audi EV

In the future, the state of California says that every manufacturer must have a zero-emission car,and Audi doesn’t want to be kept out of that lucrative market. Starting 2010 the company will offer its own electric version of the Up! concept revealed in 2007 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

If built, the future electric Audi will be offered in different body versions, including a three and five-doors "service hatch"(large hatchback) first used on the A2. The car will feature a front engine, because the rear-engined concept version is too expensive to produce. It will also feature LED-s and fiber optic lights.

Volkswagen Pickup Concept

At this week’s 62nd IAA Commercial Vehicles Show, Volkswagen will debut the VW Pickup Concept, a double-cabin pickup truck that rumors referred to as the VW Robust or Taro. The concept will actually be a preview of the production version, which is currently under development. The concept looks very interesting, especially with that ‘beach patrol’ theme, highlighted by the blue LED lights on the roof and the SAR (search and rescue) stickers on the side of its body.

No word about the specs, but, according to the German carmaker, the pickup production is scheduled to start in the fall of 2009 at the VW plant in Pachero, Argentina and sales will follow soon after, in South America, South Africa, Australia and Europe. Nothing mentioned about the US market, but we definitely expect the car to be available to across the ocean.

So, VW gets ready to enter new grounds with this pickup truck. In a market where large cars are not so attractive any more, this might look like a bold move, but, equipped with the right engine and powertrain, this car might really work for the German giant.

SEAT Exeo at Paris auto show, Teaser Site launched

Well the Paris Motor Show surely is big stuff for the major European manufacturers. After quite a lot of them already announced to unveill new models or major facelifts for actual ones, you would think that no news could appear just a few days before the beginning of the show. Well guess again, this time Seat thought it was better late than never to begin the hype around its up coming mid-size sedan, the Exeo.

The Dutch dealership has created this clever little teaser site which counts down until the beginning of the show in Paris. Besides this timer, several photos are depicted featuring some aspects of the new model. All of them point to the Exeo, Seat’s new mid size sedan, which is Audi’s old generation A4.

As expected, the Exeo will be based on the old A4, after Volkswagen, the parent company of the two manufacturers decided that another rival for the Ford Focus or Opel Insignia wouldn’t hurt the sales. Plus it would give a boost in profits for the Spanish manufacturer which is getting back on its feet after some quite troublesome years.

Even though it will essentially be the old car, I have to admit that the latin design will be quite interesting. After all, they managed to transform a pretty dull Golf V into the gorgeous looking Leon.

Mercedes SL500 by Lorinser

The Mercedes SL got a facelift from Sportservice Lorinser which makes the car suitable more than ever with the “Sport light” nature. Sportservice Lorinser has reset the jewel among sports cars: the aerodynamic body parts of the Swabian vehicle customiser are fascinatingly reminiscent of the original racing car character, when the letters SL still stood for "Sport Light".

The new model received a new spoiler bumper featuring three huge openings with racing grill inserts and a blade shaped spoiler hung below. New side skirts with large air openings in the rear part come to complete the sports look. The new Mercedes SL is now nearer to ground which makes driving at high speeds more fun than ever.

The RS 9 wheel is full of energy, and this central theme also applies especially to the design of the rear of the vehicle: while the series model tends to appear rather simple here, the Lorinser spoiler bumper draws a great deal of power from its strong contours.

2009 Volvo S40

2009 Volvo S40 offers the impressive value it used to -- the base price of the entry-level 2.4i has risen by more than $4,000 to roughly what the turbocharged T5 model cost last year. As for this year's T5, now known as the T5 R-Design, its base price has ballooned to $32,350, which pits it squarely against the aforementioned all-stars.

To be fair, Volvo didn't just arbitrarily jack up the S40's price. A number of formerly optional or unavailable features are standard this year, such as Bluetooth compatibility, a six-CD changer and a sunroof. And as ever, the S40 carries on Volvo's tradition of offering top-notch safety features and superbly designed seats. As such, the base 2.4i is still a viable alternative for car shoppers who want the style and accoutrements of a premium sport sedan without the hefty price tag -- although the Acura TSX does offer more high-tech features and better safety ratings.

However, it's hard for us to recommend the 227-hp T5 R-Design and T5 AWD R-Design models, given their newly inflated prices. At about $28,000 to start, last year's T5 was an interesting "tweener" of a car, offering zesty performance and European sophistication for the price of a nicely optioned family sedan. But the 2009 S40 T5 R-Design now goes toe-to-toe with the A4 2.0T Quattro in the price column, despite lacking the Audi's handling prowess and all-around sophistication.

The 2.4i is equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter inline-5 that generates 168 hp and 170 pound-feet of torque. The T5 R-Design and T5 AWD R-Design receive a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-5 that pumps out a healthy 227 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed automatic transmission is mandatory on all models.

According to Volvo, the 2.4i will trot from zero to 60 mph in an unhurried 8.4 seconds. The T5 R-Design accomplishes the same task in a more respectable 6.7 seconds, while the AWD model's added weight results in a 7.0-second sprint. EPA fuel economy estimates stand at 20 mpg city/28 highway and 23 combined for the S40 2.4i, while the T5 R-Design comes in at 19/28/23, and the T5 AWD R-Design yields 18/26/21.

2009 Audi TT RS Breaks Cover

The Uber TT has broken cover sans disguise. We’re digging the big air ducts on the front end. What’s under the hood is of more interest.

Supposedly it’s a twin turbo 2.5 liter five cylinder. 350hp is rumored, but given what the tuners can do with an ECU and some free flowing pipes and intercoolers, an Audi TT based budget priced 500 hp Porsche Turbo killer might not be out of the question. Somehow doubt it’s coming across the Atlantic though. Pity, as always. Note the fake TT-S grill badge!

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR

A winged, blinged all-wheel-drive sport sedan, the Lancer Evolution GSR is a continuation of a line of long-legendary rally cars that first gained notoriety on the World Rally Championship. Originally designed as a homologation model for WRX, worldwide demand grew and the first models exported to the United States were the Evo VIII or Evo 8. As with the Nissan GTR, the Lancer-Evolution’s reputation preceded its North American arrival by way of the exposure it received on the Grand Turismo video game.

The Lancer Evolution carries over the basic body design of the standard Lancer, with the addition of ground effects, a front lip kit, a rear diffuser and through the addition of the GSR Sight, Sound and Spoiler package, the famously gargantuan rear wing is included at just the right height to cut the driver’s rearward visibility in half.

A good-looking three-box sedan, it is one you shouldn’t shy away from. Possessing side lines that mimic the look of a BMW 3-Series four-door, it stands out from other vehicles in its niche. Rally-inspired foglamps and HID headlamps in front as well as the intercooler poking through a portal in the lower grille are there for all the fan-boys to get hot and bothered by, while a central NACA duct to introduce cool air to the intake and two flanking vents help to exhaust trapped air from under the hood area.

Powered by the forcefulness of a 2-liter inline four-cylinder engine with Mitsu’s MIVEC variable valve timing system, the intercooled and turbocharged engine produces 291-horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. But that’s just on paper. The engine, known internally as the 4B11, has ditched the use of a balancer shaft as seen on the previous Evo engine, due to improved NVH and new hydraulic engine mounts.

The GSR arrives standard with a new five-speed manual gearbox that has no dedicated reverse gear. Due to space limitations, an arrangement was made to use the 1st and 3rd gears and combine them with synchromesh to get that backward motion.

1968 Volkswagen 411

(from Volkswagen Press Release) Forty years have passed since Volkswagen presented the VW 411, at that time the company’s largest and most powerful model yet, to some 200 journalists in Wolfsburg. The journalists had earlier put the VW 411 through its paces on the new Volkswagen proving ground in Ehra-Lessien, testing the vehicle’s equipment and performance. Volkswagen built 367,728 units until production ceased in July 1974, and 416 of these are currently registered as old-timers.

The history of what was known as the Type 4 began in 1962 as development project EA 142. The economics of series production, which began in February 1967, were based on the sale of 822,500 vehicles over a four year period with daily production of 1,000 units. The price of the VW 411 ranged from 7,770 to 9,285 DM.

Compared to the VW 1500/1600 launched in 1961, the VW 411 was noticeably larger and better equipped. Volkswagen aimed to establish the new vehicle in the upper midsize segment which was beyond the reach of the Beetle and the Type 3, and to expand the market position in the long term by broadening the model range. For this reason, the publicity concentrated on technical innovations and the high level of comfort as well as highlighting typical Volkswagen characteristics such as quality, economic efficiency and service.

In the run-up to the market launch on October 5, 1968, dealers, the press and customers responded positively to the VW 411. Once the car had come to market, problems with the clutch on the first models delivered and an increasingly negative press curbed sales prospects. The most common complaints from customers related to engine and driving noise, the engine’s limited output and what was perceived as an unaesthetic front end.

The company introduced an improved version, the VW 411 E, for the 1970 model year. Electronic fuel injection boosted engine output to 80 bhp and the front end, which had given the model the nickname of “Nasenber” (coati), received a facelift. The VW 411 E Variant, provided even more space for luggage, and this estate version was soon selling twice as well as the hatchback saloon. Type 4 exports to the USA began in 1971, and the car sold better than expected there, soon accounting for roughly 40% of total sales.

Even though the VW 411/412 did not break any sales records, the model nevertheless has an important role to play in Volkswagen’s automobile history as the last large series model with air cooling and a rear-mounted engine. A 1966 prototype is on display at the Automuseum Wolfsburg. The Type 4 has by no means been forgotten. Type 4 fan clubs in Germany and abroad have been presenting their lovingly preserved automotive rarities at a stand at Techno Classica since 2005.

2009 Mercedes-Benz S 600 Pullman Guard Limousine

(from Daimler Press Release) Mercedes-Benz is proud to present a prestigious new luxury limousine for use by government leaders, captains of industry and royalty – the S 600 Pullman Guard with integrated Highest Protection. The latest in a long and unique tradition of large, armoured, prestige limousines from the world's oldest automaker, this model also marks a special anniversary for the Stuttgart-based firm: 80 years of manufacturing vehicles with factory-integrated special protection.

The very first Mercedes-Benz car to be built with factory-integrated special protection was a Pullman limousine version of the "Nьrburg" 460 (W08) series which was introduced in 1928. At the beginning of the 1930s, this was followed by the 770 (W07) "Grand Mercedes" (which provided protection befitting the status of Japanese Emperor Hirohito, to name but one prominent user) as well as by the special-protection variants of the 500 (W08) and 770 (W 150) model series.

Like the famously luxurious and spacious open-plan Pullman railway coaches after which it is named, the new S 600 Pullman Guard treats its occupants to a travelling environment characterised by generous accommodation and the highest comfort. The vehicle owes its remarkably spacious interior to its 4315-millimetre wheelbase (115 centimetres longer than that of the long version of the special-protection S-Class). Indeed, with an overall length of 6356 millimetres, the S 600 Pullman Guard is a vehicle of truly majestic proportions which offers its passengers not only a maximum of comfort, but also a superbly appointed setting for discreet meetings, equipped, of course, with all the key communications and entertainment systems. This ensures they are always able to remain fully in touch with the rest of the world while enjoying the luxury and comfort of their own very special place in it.

The technical basis for the new Pullman limousine is provided by the S 600 Guard, the top of the Mercedes-Benz Guard range. It is powered by a superbly smooth twelve-cylinder biturbo engine with a displacement of 5513 cubic centimetres and an output of 380 kW/517 hp with an impressive 830 Nm of torque.

The suspension and basic vehicle structure have been modified as it would be impossible to guarantee the long-term overall stability of the vehicle with its extra-long wheelbase if the lengthening process consisted of simply inserting an additional body section. The modifications also provide a solid foundation for the integration of the heavy special-protection elements. Furthermore, the new state limousine is equipped with a higher rear roof for easier access and greater headroom. Four passengers can be accommodated in the rear compartment behind the partition — in comfortable seats whose face-to-face arrangement recalls the great Pullman tradition.

Maserati has taken its flagship GranTurismo S to even higher performance levels with the creation of the GranTurismo MC Concept. Designed purely as a track-day special, it boasts significant styling changes which aim to improve its aerodynamic efficiency without spoiling the elegant lines of the original model.

The Maserati Corse Concept features two large air intakes designed to improve air flow to the engine and brakes, combination air inlet/vents integrated into the bonnet and pumped guards to accommodate the wider track.

The side profile undergone extensive aerodynamic testing and now incorporates new side air vents linked to the side skirts similar to the Nissan GT-R to channel hot air from the engine bay around the car.

The rear boasts twin exit exhaust pipes integrated into the rear diffuser and a much steeper spoiler angle to compliment the added aerodynamic effects of the new front splitter.

Maserati Racing Department engineers have almost entirely stripped out any reminder of the original interior to save weight and added an FIA approved roll cage, Sparco race wheel, and carbon race seats, dashboard and control console. The Corse Concept runs a highly tuned version of the 4.7-litre V8 engine from the GranTurismo S which now develops 330.9kW and 510Nm at 4,750rpm.

This has been achieved through the installation of a high performance air intake system combined with an exhaust system fitted with a race-type catalytic converter. The end result is an overall weight of less than 1,400kg and a power to weight ration of less than 4.2kg per kW.

Hydrogen-powered Mecedes-Benz B-Class spotted in U.S.

It sounds almost too good to be true, but cars which run on hydrogen fuel cells emit only water vapor into the atmosphere and in contrast to oil, hydrogen is not a fossil fuel with only limited reserves. However, there are many challenging hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, all of which have combined to slow the production of road-going hydrogen vehicles.

Car manufacturers are seemingly uneasy about propagating this form of motive power. Research has been going on for decades and numerous breakthroughs have been announced. So far though, only a handful of prototypes and some limited series production vehicles have appeared. A fuel cell car is basically an electric vehicle since the fuel cell stack is used to combine hydrogen with atmospheric oxygen. The chemical energy from the reaction is then converted into electric power, which drives the vehicle.

Matthias Brock from Daimler in Stuttgart said he believes that the fuel cell is very promising when it comes to zero-emission driving in local areas. Mercedes has around 100 test vehicles underway – the world’s largest fleet of fuel cell vehicles. The company is currently working on a B-class with fuel cell power, which could be produced in limited numbers from 2010. “We estimate that between 2012 and 2015, the car could be ready for series production,” Brock said.

Whether cars need to be completely emission-free is another issue. Andreas Ostermeier from the German federal environment ministry in Dessau said that the notion of zero-emissions is an irrelevance. Petrol and diesel engines no longer pose a threat to air quality. Petrol engines which comply with the Euro-5 standard laid down by the European Union use the latest technology to reduce toxins to levels far below those of even a decade ago. The same will apply to diesels when Euro 6 becomes legally binding from 2014. “Nowadays fuel consumption and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions are at the top of the agenda,” Ostermeier said.

Hydrogen is complex to produce, which puts the fuel at a further disadvantage as conventional fuels continue to get cleaner. It is also an expensive fuel source as one example shows. Hydrogen can be gained by using steam to reform natural gas.

In regions such as South America, bio-fuels could be the most viable alternative whereas in highly-populated urban regions in Western Europe, the pure electric car offers the most potential for the future.

Corvette ZR1 UK Pricing

The fastest and most powerful series production car from GM, the new Corvette ZR1, is on sale in the UK with first customer deliveries scheduled to arrive towards the end of the year.

And when GM says first deliveries it actually means just two left-hand drive (yep, no right-hand drive folks) models will arrive in 2008 and only single digit volumes will be available for 2009, which could be just as well since on-the-road (OTR) pricing for the 647PS Vette has been set at a whopping £109,000 ($201,000 US). Just for the record, and even though the ZR1 boasts many unique features that set it apart from the rest of the Corvettes, the 505PS Z06 costs £62,100.

RUF GTR3 spotted

AutoJunk spotted this black-matte Ruf GTR3, and you have to admit it looks pretty amazing! I really want one!

Powering the GTR3 is a twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat six engine pumping out 700 bhp at 7,000 rpm with torque topping out at 657 lb-ft. Drive is sent to the wheels via a rumored seven-speed sequential automatic gearbox that’s said to allow the GTR3 to reach a top speed of 224 mph.

Bentley Arnage – Final Series

It’s been 10 years since the four-door flagship of the Bentley range was released. 1998 saw the introduction of the Arnage - a stately, luxurious sedan with all the Bentley hallmarks of immense torque, precise handling and cossetting opulence. Today Bentley has announced that the last run of Arnages will be released under the Final Series banner.

A run of 150 cars will be built, but then folks, it’s all over. 90 years of tradition is wrapped up in these last cars, and it also marks the 50th anniversary of the 6.75-litre V8 that we’ve come to know in so many Bentleys. However the real kicker in the press release is this line: “Arnage Final Series also signals the end of an era, as Bentley prepares for the future.”

Bentley has also moved with the times, with the entertainment centre head unit getting an SD card slot, and IPod input, as well as USB, Mini USB, and a 3.5mm auxillary jack. Of course, Naim audio is standard.

But it’s under the bonnet that things really heat up. Using the same engine as the Brooklands, the Arnage final series gets the full-welly twin turbocharged V8, with 373kW and a colossal 1000Nm of torque. ZF’s supreme six-speed automatic bolts up to it for smooth shifting, and it will move this 2.6-tonne sedan from 0-100km/h in 5.5 seconds.

“The Final Series is the perfect model to give our Arnage flagship a splendid send off,” said Stuart McCullough, Member of the Board, Sales and Marketing. “Handcrafted at Crewe, this exclusive run of 150 cars represents the ultimate expression of Bentley luxury and effortless power.”

2009 Suzuki Wagon R

Suzuki has a new Wagon R on the market in Japan. It's joined by a new Wagon R Stingray variant as well, and the duo will set about filling the shoes of their bestselling predecessors. The new Wagon Rs don't lose their signature boxiness, but they wear all-new sheetmetal and sit on a longer wheelbase. The standard Wagon R gets a friendly face with large, tall headlamps, while the sportier-themed Wagon R Stingray gets a chrome grille strip that runs between its thinner, horizontal lamps.

The rest follows the standard kei-car formula. Darker, more masculine colors characterize the Stingray, while the Wagon R clearly includes women in its target audience, sporting a color palette loaded with the lighter solids and pastels. Normally-aspirated and turbocharged 660cc engines are offered, mated to either 4- or 5-speed automatics or a CVT, depending on trim level. The turbocharged Stingray with CVT even gets paddle shifters to give drivers complete control over the 64 ponies corraled underhood. A snazzier, dark interior with some nifty lighting is also available in the Stingray.

Suzuki hopes to sell 18,000 new Wagon Rs every month, and if the previous generation showed us anything, we can expect to see a variety of spinoff models over time.

2009 Jaguar XF Review

If Jaguar made its reputation with fast, luxurious, and beautiful sports cars exemplified by the XK series from the original XK 120 of 1949 through today's XK, it has also built some fine sedans to broaden its lineup. The best-known and most influential was the mid-sized Mark 2, produced from the late 1950s through the 1960s, is a classic today, was successfully raced, and inspired the S-Type of 1998 through 2008. The large XJ sedans, in all their various guises over the years since the nameplate debuted in 1968, have also cemented the company's reputation for distinctive styling.

Jaguar is known for its sumptuous old-English interiors, with leather and burled wood aplenty. That's the XJ, the XF, while incorporating both materials, also features textured aluminum trim for a sportier and more contemporary look. It works. There is plenty of electronic trickery - get in, press the start button, and the air vents in the dash rotate from their closed positions while the JaguarDrive Rotary Gear Selector knob rises from its flush storage position in the console - but that is appropriate for a modern luxury car. There is also plenty of room, as the high sides disguise a roof that is higher than it may appear, and moving the wheels to the car's corners produces ample interior space. Leather is used for the seats, instrument panel top, steering wheel rim, and door trim, with wood and aluminum across the dash and on the console. Plastic is notable by its absence, and what little is used looks much like the aluminum. The navigation system, standard in the Premium Luxury model, has a simple touch-screen interface, which also serves for the audio and climate control systems and trip computer.

With 300 horsepower (at 6000 rpm) and 310 lb-ft of torque (at 4100 rpm), the naturally-aspirated XF engine is by no means deficient. It's capable of moving the car from a standstill to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, and makes wonderful music while doing so. The six-speed automatic transmission helps both acceleration and economy, and I found 25 mpg or better easily attainable at normal highway speeds. Jaguars are known as high-speed, long-distance touring machines, and the XF will shine in that role.

While allowing occupants an unrestricted view of the world above and around them, the special tinted, reflective glass reduces energy used by the vehicle's air conditioning system by 20 percent and also protects the interior fabric from fading and deteriorating. A manually operated roller blind allows owners to block the light on bright days.

For 2009, Ford has also added more standard equipment to the popular "Premium" arrays offered on both the Mustang V-6 and GT, including SIRIUS® Satellite Radio, ambient lighting, satin aluminum instrument panel trim and upgraded interior trim.

A new, optional GT Security Package includes an active anti-theft system and wheel locking kit and Brilliant Silver clear coat metallic joins the list of available Mustang exterior colors.

Audi S4

The S-express has just rolled in! These are the first pictures of the new Audi S4 flagship – and it’s lean, mean and ready to go.

Audi has bucked the trend for stuffing ever bigger engines into its ‘S’ cars with this S4 – ditching the V8 of its predecessor and instead dropping a supercharged V6 under the bonnet.

Losing the big V8 means this S4 is significantly lighter at the nose, which should improve handling, yet the supercharger means it still generates 333bhp (a loss of only 6bhp), while torque increases by 30Nm – with 439Nm now on tap!

As a result, the 0-62mph sprint is dispatched half-a-second faster, at 5.1 seconds, but fuel economy is up a substantial 26 percent! Set to make its debut at the Paris Motor Show, the newcomer loses none of the aesthetic aggression of the outgoing car, with 18-inch alloys, lowered suspension, quad exhaust pipes and trademark aluminum wing mirrors.

BMW 7 Series ActiveHybrid concept

BMW has joined the hybrid party with the introduction of a 7 Series hybrid concept car which will be shown at next month’s Paris motor show. Although we have previously seen the 7 series in hydrogen form, this concept is a little more traditional-hybrid in its underpinnings and may simply be the German company’s way of saying, we can do it too.

The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid is based on a BMW 750i, which is powered by a mighty 300 kW (600 Nm of torque) V8 petrol engine with twin turbochargers and high precision jnjection. The petrol engine is kept intact, with an electric engine added only as an aid, making this B-em-veh what the industry calls a mild hybrid.

Generating its power from brake energy regeneration, the main purpose of the electric motor is to supply electric power to the power-consuming items on board. Allowing the petrol engine to run more smoothly

Fuel and emissions ratings have both improved by a respectable 15 per cent compared with the stock 750i. Meanwhile the electric engine has added an additional 15kW of power and peak torque of 210 Nm (this does not necessarily mean the concept has 810 Nm of torque).

The concept sounds rather familiar as its core design philosophy is similar to that of the Toyota Prius. However it does differ, in the most important way, batteries!

The Big T has had well documented problems integrating Lithium-Ion batteries in the new Prius, meanwhile BMW has equipped this concept with a high-performance lithium-ion battery integrated in the luggage compartment.

From the outside the concept is differentiated by an aluminium band stretching across the entire width of the front end beneath the number plate as well as its 20-inch light-alloy rims in V-spoke design.

Ford Ka

The baby Ford will make its world debut at next month’s Paris Motor Show, but company bosses have already confirmed trim levels. There’s a choice of Studio, Style, Style + and Zetec, each with its own unique styling features and equipment. Buyers will also be able to specify optional extras such as Bluetooth phone connectivity and heated seats.

The Ka shares platform architecture with the Fiat 500, and is built on the same production line at the Italian firm’s Tychy factory in Poland. Ford has spent thousands of hours ensuring the car is stronger dynamically than its Fiat twin, though. Engine options will be limited to a 1.2-litre petrol unit with 68bhp or a 74bhp 1.3-litre TDCi turbodiesel. Both models emit less than 120g/km of CO2, while the oil-burner promises 67.2mpg fuel returns. Ford says the Ka will arrive in showrooms here in “late 2008 to early 2009”.

Mercedes Gullwing

Here’s a Merc with wings! This is the Mercedes Gullwing, set to fly to the top of the tree when it hits showrooms in 2010 after a Geneva show debut the same year. This heavily disguised mule looks like the offspring of an encounter between a Dodge Viper and a Mercedes SLR, thanks to its slung back cabin and disproportionately long bonnet, but one feature gives its true identity away – the doors.

This is the first time a Gullwing mule has been spotted with production-ready top-hinged doors (albeit sporting some gargantuan panel gaps), verifiable by the pair of riveted black panels on either side of the roof, which cover the hinges. Previous mules were a mishmash of Viper and Mercedes SL parts.

Details on the Gullwing are sparse at present, though sources suggest the newcomer, codenamed C197 internally, will wear an AMG badge and have a unique moniker aimed to distinguish it as a standalone, flagship model. To ensure exclusivity and prestige, production will run for only two years, limited to around 6000 cars per year worldwide.

It’s difficult to decipher many styling details through the distracting disguise on this test mule, but front daytime running lights are visible, as well as (only just) a pair of ‘shark fin’ vents at either side of the bonnet bulge.

Power is expected to come from either a turbocharged V8 or a naturally aspirated V10 engine, pushing out between 550bhp and 650bhp. Our spies also spotted a pair of silver paddle shifters behind the wheel of this mule (though they didn't manage to snap them), suggesting power will go to the wheels via Mercedes’ 7-Tronic automatic gearbox.

New Renault Mégane

The five-door hatch arrives in November, priced from around £12,500. Following the conservative Laguna’s lukewarm reception, the Mégane has been given a fresh look – and we’re promised much needed advances in build quality and reliability.

Power comes from a range of new, clean diesels and downsized petrol engines. Safety standards will be high and the brand says big-car features – such as an electric handbrake, hard-drive DVD and intelligent cruise control – will distance it from rivals.

Renault has invested a massive £1.4billion in the new Renault Mégane. Five other variants will follow the practical hatch, including a sportier three-door, an estate, a coupé-convertible and two Scenic MPV models.

Fiat 500 DIESEL

DIESEL as in Diesel clothing, has collaborated with Fiat to create a special edition version of the new 500 minicar that will be produced in 10,000 copies over the next two years. Based on the Sport version, the ‘500 by Diesel’ is available in three exterior colors (olive green, black and brown). Unique exterior features include the aluminum trim on the bumpers, the protective strips on the door, the yellow brake calipers and the Diesel insignias.

Likewise, the interior has been enhanced with special upholstery fabrics made from denim while the Diesel brand logo makes its appearance on the dashboard and the gear knob. The 500 by Diesel will be available with two petrol engines, a 69HP 1.2-liter and a 100HP 1.4-liter unit as well as a 1.3 Mutlijet turbo diesel delivering 75HP, with prices set at €15,000 for the 1.2 and at €17,000 for both the 1.4 and 1.3 Multijet variants.

2008 Saab 9-3 2.0T convertible

With a starting price in the low-$40,000 range, the 9-3 Lynx Yellow convertible competes with the same group of vehicles familiar to its four-door counterpart – namely the roofless versions of the Audi A4 and the BMW 3-series, but also the Volvo C70. However, once the option boxes begin to get ticked, the 9-3 convertible starts to have more in common with the A4 cabriolet and C70 than it does with the drop top Bimmer – which retails for about 6 grand more than the 9-3 when comparably equipped.

Although on the lower end of things, it’s possible to lump Toyota’s Solara convertible in with the list of 9-3 competitors

With Saab’s 210-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder underhood, the 9-3 convertible has more than enough power to zip around town. The 9-3 convertible’s hefty curb weight (about 3,800 pounds) and hint of turbo lag will never make it king of the drag strip, but there’s enough on tap under your right foot to confidently merge into highway traffic or have a little fun on the back roads – the latter made all that much better by putting the top down to hear the turbo at full song.

And the 9-3 convertible’s suspension will gladly let you have some fun on the twisties. Not only does the 9-3 absorb bumps and road imperfection far better than we thought it would, it continues to overachieve even in sporty driving. You won’t confuse the 9-3 convertible with a true sports car, but it holds its own up until about 7/10. There is a touch of body flex from the removal of the roof, but it’s hardly noticeable, even over rough patches of tarmac. Although not quite up to BMW standards, we were thoroughly impressed with the 9-3 convertible’s suspension setup.

While our 9-3 convertible tester shared the same engine as our 9-3 sedan test car, the burden of the convertible’s extra weight was noticeable at the pump. We averaged just over 25 mpg during our week with the 9-3 convertible – albeit with a healthy stint of highways driving – but still fell short of our 9-3 sedan’s average. However, our 25 mpg bested the EPA’s ratings of 18/24 mpg city/highway.

Pininfarina electric car at the Paris Auto Show

Pininfarina will unveil at the Paris Auto Show a plug-in electric concept car that previews a future four-seat small car that the company plans to sell under its own brand name in Europe, US and Japan starting in late 2010.

The concept car will feature Lithium Metal Polymer batteries. These batteries differ from lithium-ion batteries (like the ones planned for the Chevrolet Volt) because each battery cell is electronically protected by passive and active systems that constantly monitor operating efficiency, voltage and temperature of each element. The cells are encased in a steel container to prevent damage.

It has a 125 mile range on a full charge that takes about eight hours to load from a standard home electrical outlet. It can also run for 15 miles on a five-minute charge.

Fiat Lotus Elise Dino

Fiat is planning a massive product offensive over the next three years and could re-launch the evocative Dino badge on a Lotus-derived sports car, CAR has learned. Not to be confused with the Dino of Ferrari fame, Fiat's version was all about affordable, stylish transport – and we could see the badge on a new Elise-based sports car due in three years' time.

Fiat has entered into an agreement with Lotus so that it can develop its own version of the British company’s next Elise roadster. Fiat is basically repeating what Vauxhall did with the VX220; piggybacking a highly successful sports car and developing a mildly different version.

Fiat's new Dino sports car is due in 2011
The new Fiat sports car will hit showrooms in 2011, CAR has discovered. It had been thought it would use the newly resurrected Abarth badge. 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS - Live Pics from Indy 2008

At this past weekend’s Indy Bash event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Chevy re-(multiply by ten times)-introduced the new Camaro to thousands of GM fans. Among those to answer GM’s callings were the folks over at Camaro5 forums that happily put their cameras to work.

Aside from the Camaro RS and the Transformer Movie Bumblebee, GM also brought to Indy the top-off-the-line Camaro SS that’s equipped with a 422HP 6.2-liter V8. In this new set of pictures from the crew at Camaro5, we get to see more details of the SS’ two-tone interior with the overly tacky plastic red panels reminding us that bad taste has no boundaries.

2010 Mercedes-Benz S 400 BlueHYBRID

(from Daimler Press Release) Mercedes-Benz is launching its first passenger car model equipped with a hybrid drive system in summer 2009 - the S 400 BlueHYBRID. The combination of a modified V6 petrol engine and a compact hybrid module makes the S 400 BlueHYBRID the world's most economical luxury saloon with a spark-ignition engine. The NEDC combined fuel consumption is a mere 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres. This makes for the world's lowest CO2 emissions in this vehicle and performance class - just 190 grams per kilometre.

These exemplary figures go hand in hand with assured performance. The 3.5-litre petrol engine develops an output of 205 kW/279 hp, the electric motor generates 15 kW/20 hp and a starting torque of 160 Nm. The result is a combined output of 220 kW/299 hp and a combined maximum torque of 385 newton metres. Moreover, the new S 400 BlueHYBRID is the first series-production model to be equipped with a particularly efficient lithium-ion battery specially developed for automotive use. This is another major contribution by Mercedes-Benz to the electrification of the car.

The new Mercedes-Benz S 400 BlueHYBRID is based on the S 350, and features an extensively modified drive train. This encompasses a further development of the 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine, an additional magneto-electric motor, the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission specially configured for the hybrid module, the necessary operating and control electronics, the transformer and a high-voltage lithium-ion battery.

The compact hybrid module is a disc-shaped electric motor that also acts as a starter and generator. The system offers a double benefit, as it both helps to save fuel and increases driving enjoyment. This is partly due to the booster effect of the electric motor, as it powerfully backs up the petrol engine with a maximum additional torque of 160 newton metres during the high-consumption acceleration phase. The driver benefits from the combined action of these two units in the form of even more impressive torque characteristics and smooth, effortlessly superior acceleration.

The hybrid module also has a comfortable start/stop function, which switches the engine off when the vehicle is at a standstill - for example at traffic lights. When it's time to move off again, the electric motor almost imperceptibly restarts the main power unit. This likewise makes a contribution to fuel economy and environmental protection: because the engine restarts first time, and practically instantly, emissions are also minimised during the starting phase.

When the vehicle is braked the electric motor acts as a generator, and is able to recover braking energy by a process known as recuperation. Working in finely tuned partnership, the electric motor supplements the braking effect of the petrol engine and the wheel brakes to deliver a smoothly progressive braking action. The recuperated energy is stored in a compact yet highly efficient lithium-ion battery in the engine compartment, and made available when required. This complex system is managed by a high-performance control unit, which is likewise located in the engine compartment.

2010 Nissan Pixo

Gracing the Nissan stand at the Paris auto show alongside the futurisitic NuVu and the revised Note mini-minivan is a new city car, the five-door Pixo, built in collaboration with Suzuki.

Competing in the hot A-class category (hot in all markets but North America), the four-passenger Pixo measures a tiny 11.7 feet long (just a few inches shorter than a Mini Cooper), 57.9 inches tall, and 63 inches wide.

Nissan has offered few details about the powertrains, other than to say it has a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine “full four-speed automatic transmission”—as opposed to a partial four-speed automatic? The Pixo “continues the theme of compact urban motoring with outstanding green credentials,” as a companion to the electric Nuvu.

The Pixo is scheduled for sale in Europe in the spring of 2009 and in the U.S., well, never.

JDM Honda Odyssey teased ahead of debut

As many of you doubtless know, the Japanese Honda Odyssey isn't the same thing we get here in the States. While we get the more jumbo-ridic family escape pod with sliders and the whole shebang, the JDM Odyssey is a sleeker-looking MPV with four traditionally-hinged doors and four-cylinder power. And now it's time for a new one. Honda's just put up a special site to welcome the upcoming 4th-gen JDM Odyssey, whose styling further evolves the shape that's by now a common site in Japan, while the front end is likely to showcase Honda's current family design theme (think Clarity, Insight, etc.).

In lieu of, say, an Accord wagon, this (or the more compact Stream) might work for a lot of people -- especially those of us who view the typical U.S.-style minivan as Superman does kryptonite.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate spied

The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been spied at the Nurburgring yet again, however this time in a more sedate estate guise.

While it isn’t entirely possible to tell from these spy shots, the likely feature the AMG E63 Estate - judging by just how hard the driver is pushing it on the track.

Due to be unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the estate will almost certainly mimic the specification level of its sedan counterpart.

A major portion of these features will encompass a greater focus on driver aid technologies such as lane-departure warnings, an eye-movement monitor, traffic-sign identification and road-condition sensors.

Expect Mercedes’ usual range of petrol and diesel V6 and V8 engines with a flagship naturally aspirated 6.3-litre V8 engine churning out over 370kW.

Seat Ibiza FR spied

According to our overseas spies, this heavily disguised model is likely the new Seat Ibiza.

Its large wheels and twin exhaust pipes suggest it could be the FR-variant - one below the flagship performance Cupra.

A brief glimpse of the interior also reveals red stitching on a mix of leather and cloth seats.

A segue between the normal range and the hot version, the FR Ibiza should boast a four-cylinder turbocharged engine from the Volkswagen family.

Expect around 134kW from this Spanish family hatch, launching it into the league of the GTi - with yet another more powerful model still to come.

IMSA Murcielago GTR Spyder

IMSA Tuning isn’t as widely recognized as fellow German rivals such as MTM, EDO Competition and Brabus, but the performance workshop has released a number of brilliant power upgrades over the past 12 months, including their latest kit for Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster. Based around the higher-spec LP640 model, the new package includes a minor power bump, an aggressive new aero kit and an uprated wheel and tire package.

Calling their creation the Murcielago ‘GTR Spyder’, the latest roadster sits beside the previous hardtop GTR and features the same 708hp (528kW) output. The result of this is that the GTR Spyder is now capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 3.3 seconds – 0.1 seconds faster than the standard LP640 Roadster.

More importantly, top speed is lifted to well above 350km/h, throwing the IMSA Murcielago GTR Spyder well into hypercar territory.

The stunning gains are achieved through some clever aerodynamic work. The Murcielago GTR Spyder comes with a custom wide-bodykit, including a carbon diffuser, a rear spoiler and additional air-intakes to help with cooling. There is also a high-flow sports exhaust system featuring a valve-control system to enhance engine noise at all speed.

Completing the look is a set of glossy black alloy wheels. The car can also be fitted with an upgraded interior, with optional carbon and leather trim.

The car we’re talking about is a Ferrari 250 GTO and apparently someone paid a whopping $28.5 million for it. These rumors showed up on the FerrariChat forums and no one confirmed it so far.

If it’s true, it’s incredible what ridiculous amounts of money are being paid for these classic cars. I mean, yeah, they’re beautiful, but c’mon, $28.5 million?

2008 Infiniti M45S

The FM platform, like the perennial Ward’s 10-Best-winning VQ engine, has been one of Nissan’s true hits. Supporting innumerable models from crossovers to sports coupes to sedans and more, the front-midship chassis has proven a winner in nearly every vehicle it touched. But it’s going on seven years old now, and that’s beginning to show through. The Infiniti M45 is the largest of the sedans based on the platform, and the Sport variant, badged with a red ‘S’, is the most driver-focused version of the M45, so it’d be reasonable to think this was the best car you could buy on the FM platform. But you’d be wrong.

Equipment and Features
The M45 has a range of fairly basic equipment that other cars should, but often don’t, have. The backup camera with the animated overlay that shows not just where the car is, but where it’s going to be based on steering input, is a tremendous aid. The simple navigation system that shares the same screen is itself really quite good, despite a display of only average resolution. It finds locations quickly, recalculating routes without a significant wait and generally doing what it’s supposed to without error - something that certainly can’t be said for some highly over-complicated offerings from the competition.

Technical
The powerful 325hp/336lb-ft V8 engine makes freeway mergers, red-light take-offs and the odd country road a blast. It sounds throaty and powerful, too. The way the car takes off when the go-pedal is leveled makes me think it may well be somewhat underrated in terms of power. It feels significantly more powerful than the G35 or even the Mustang GT, for instance, even though those cars are rated within 20hp or so of the M45.

The five-speed transmission is equipped with a manual-shift mode, but it lacks real purpose.
Fuel economy, however, is not so great. Our week-long trek with the car through the wilds of suburbia revealed a consistent pattern: 12-15mpg in typical driving, with low 20s on the highway, for an average of about 16mpg. That’s about 22 cents per mile in fuel costs, or three times the cost of a 50mpg Prius - not that the Prius could ever lay claim to the comfort or style of the M45. It’s actually about average or better than a lot of the V6 luxury sedans we’ve tested lately, however, so the V8 offers a lot of good (low-end torque and pulling power) for no real downside. It is, however, somewhat below the 16/21mpg city/highway and 18mpg combined rating the EPA gives the car.

Final Verdict
At the end of the week with the Infiniti M45S, we were left feeling somewhat disappointed - for a car that delivered such a great first impression, read like a dream on paper, and promised to be all things to all people, it just ended up failing to follow through. Nearly sporty enough to justify its fairly harsh ride and nearly high-tech enough to justify its expensive options packages, the M45S falls short of the high benchmark set by the latest crop of large luxury sedans, and without a significant price advantage, it’s just not quite good enough to make our list of recommended cars in the segment.

The Audi A4 AllRoad has successfully stayed away from the glaring media over the past few months, that was of course until our spy photographer caught this completely undisguised prototype exiting the Nurburgring circuit.

Its styling follows in the footsteps of Audi previous venture in the AllRoad branding based on the A6, this particular prototype features a set of black wheel arch extensions which increase the overall width of the vehicle and it also gets a slightly increased ride height. We expected a wagon variant of the A4 AllRoad will hit the market as well as the sedan seen here, however prototypes of this particular body style have managed to evade our cameras so far.

The production ready look of this model add weight to the argument that it will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in a couple of weeks.

Mercedes C Class from Expression Motorsport

Belgian tuner Expression Motorsport announced their latest product, the EX C Motorsport widebody kit for the new Mercedes Benz C Class. The package includes a redesigned front bumper that incorporates fog lamps and LED indicators, new carbon fiber front lower lip spoiler, the more aggressive C63 AMG hood with vents, 10 piece fender flair set, new side skirts and redesigned rear bumper with carbon fiber diffuser and LED F1 brake light integrated.

The package is completed by a double twin-tip exhaust and 22-inch wheels. No idea of the pricing, but the package looks great, too bad Expression didn’t mention anything about mechanical or engine upgrades.

Saab 9-X Air BioHybrid concept

Saab has unveiled its new 9-X Air concept which could hint at the design style of future open-air roadsters from the brand. Inspired by Saab’s heritage in aviation, the concept boasts what the brand hopes to become the trademark ‘Canopy Top’ - an evolution of the typical rag top.

Pushing the boundaries of conventional convertible design, the rear pillar of the 9-X Air concept curves upwards to create the distinct wraparound glasshouse. Penned alongside the Saab 9-X BioHybrid concept by designer Anthony Lo, the 9-X Air shares its distinctive front end styling, together with its highly efficient powertrain.

The turbocharged 1.4-litre Saab BioPower engine has been optimised for E85 fuel and incorporates an electric boost hybrid system for optimal fuel efficiency.

Performance is a substantial 147kW and 280Nm with a projected fuel consumption figure of 5 litres per 100kms and 119g CO2/km on standard fuel, which changes to 107g/km and 6.5l/100km when used with E85. This is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with an automatic clutch and steering wheel mounted controls. In partnership with Sony Ericsson, the 9-X Air and its hatchback sibling also showcase the next generation of Bluetooth wireless connectivity with one or more mobile devices.

The in-car interface allows the driver to stream data, entertainment and satellite navigation functions, which are transferred automatically to the car while the device remains in the user’s pocket.

2010 Audi R8 Spyder - Video

Where would we be without the legions of spy photographers out there? Without this fantastic snippet of Audi’s mid-engined drop-top taking it to Nurburgring, for one. Looks like the topless German will sport a retractable soft top instead of the rumored removable targa roof . While this car won’t be fit for public consumption until 2010, the company is said to be working on wedging a 510 horspower V10 behind the front seats. The company says the 10 pot configuration should be available in the coupe as early as mid-2009. And that, my Fiends, is worth waiting for. Unfortunately, we can’t wait. Jump for the video.

Range Rover facelift spied

Spy photographers this time came across the refreshed model lapping the Nurburgring.

This time around engineers have done away with the bulky camouflage apron to gain accurate aerodynamic feedback, giving us our best glimpse of the new model yet.

Revisions to the headlamps, a modified grille and updated taillights form the majority of the mid-cycle update.

These changes prelude the arrival of an all-new Range Rover which is expected to arrive in 2013.

This refreshed model however should arrive in dealerships by late 2009.

2008 Peugeot 908 HY

Peugeot Sport presented a 908 HDi FAP equipped with a hybrid power plant at the final round of the 2008 Le Mans Series at Silverstone, this weekend.

Peugeot Sport profited from the final round of the 2008 Le Mans Series at Silverstone to unveil a 908 HDi FAP equipped with a hybrid power plant, featuring a kinetic energy recovery system. The 908HY was presented in a new, specific silver-grey livery and will provide a foretaste of what Peugeot’s next endurance racing challenger could resemble, although its use will depend on the regulations that will govern LMP 1 cars from 2009. In the case of a non-hybrid car, this energy is lost and simply dissipated in the form of heat via the brakes. However, when harnessed, it enables the vehicle’s efficiency to be improved in one of two ways:
--Enhanced performance with no increase in the amount of energy consumed, thanks to the combination of the stored mechanical energy and the energy produced by the internal combustion engine
--Reduced fuel consumption for the same level of performance, thanks to the availability of stored mechanical energy

The system featured on this demonstrator comprises three key elements:
1) A 60 kW gear-driven electric motor-generator which takes the place of the conventional starter motor
2) Batteries which permit recovered energy to be stored in 600 lithium-ion cells divided into 10 battery packs (six in the cockpit instead of the conventional battery and four on the left-hand side of the floor pan)
3) An electronic power converter (located in the rear part of the front left wing) which controls the flow of energy between the batteries and the motor-generator

The 908HY can be powered in one of three ways:
--Electric mode only (e.g. in the pit-lane)
--Internal combustion engine only
--A combination of the two
--In the course of a lap of Le Mans, for example, the system will recuperate energy for between 20 and 30 seconds. This energy reserve can be used for:
--Either delivering extra power thanks to an additional boost of 60 kW (80 bhp) for approximately 20 seconds per lap, either automatically when re-accelerating or when the driver chooses to make use of it (‘push to pass’)
--Or to reduce fuel consumption for the equivalent level of performance thanks to the mechanical energy recovered (between three and five per cent)

The Scout 4×4 is no urban jungle pretender, just as capable in mud, sand or snow thanks to its state-of-the-art four-wheel-drive system and ground clearance of 180mm.

This is largely thanks to its second-generation Haldex clutch mechanism, which allows power to be transferred between the front and rear wheels as and when it is required. This new version is able to react faster than the first-generation Haldex system, providing increased traction on loose surfaces.

Under the bonnet lies a Volkswagen-sourced 2.0-litre TDI engine with diesel particulate filter which produces 103kW and 320Nm, linked to a six-speed manual transmission.

With direct injection, turbocharging and electronic injection control, fuel consumption is impressive with a combined figure of just 6.6-litres per 100km.

The Octavia Scout 4×4 features a generous list of standard equipment including 17-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, dual zone air con, ESP, 6 airbags, rear acoustic parking sensors, cruise control, twin chrome exhausts and unique ‘Scout’ touches throughout the cabin.

With 580-litres of storage capacity– which jumps to 1,620 with the rear seats folded down – and a payload capacity of 660kg, the new Octavia Scout 4×4 is the true all-rounder – with prices starting from $39,990.

Today, the one millionth smart fortwo rolled off the production line at the plant in Hambach, France - a micro hybrid drive (mhd) in the passion equipment line. On the occasion of the production anniversary and the tenth birthday of the smart brand Daimler presented the new smart electric drive. In Hambach Dr. Dieter Zetsche, President and CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars said "The smart electric drive makes zero emission driving in an urban environment a reality."

The anniversary vehicle, which celebrates the tenth birthday of the Hambach plant and is the one millionth fortwo, rolled off the production line as an mhd passion with a 52 kW/71 bhp engine in the colour silver metallic. The car will be donated to charity. Dr. Dieter Zetsche, President and CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, congratulated the team at the Hambach plant on their work. "The continuing rising demand shows the success and the potential of the smart fortwo from Hambach. This year we have already sold 90,000 cars, more than 16,000 of them in the USA. From mid 2009 the smart will also become a familiar sight on Chinese roads."

The new smart fortwo electric drive offers the brand additional growth opportunities: "From the end of 2009 we will produce a small series of the smart fortwo electric drive with a lithium-ion battery", Dr. Dieter Zetsche said. The predecessor of the smart fortwo electric drive, the smart fortwo ev (electric vehicle), celebrated its world premiere in 2006. Since 2007 a fleet with a total of 100 smart fortwo electric drives of the first generation has been tested in everyday service in London. With the new smart fortwo generation the smart with electric drive is also being reengineered. Whereas the first generation of the smart fortwo electric drive is equipped with a sodium-nickel-chloride battery, the second generation will be fitted with a lithium-ion battery. This battery combines higher performance with a long life and high reliability.

From October both the 52 kW/71 bhp and the 45 kW/61 bhp models will be equipped with mhd technology as standard. These are also the most popular engine variants with customers. This reduces the NEDC consumption by approximately 8 percent to 4.3 litres per 100 km and in urban traffic a fuel saving of almost 20 percent can be achieved.

2009 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

Ferrari's oldest current model, the 612 Scaglietti, is also its least desirable, if marketplace demand is any measure. While the F430 and the 599GTB Fiorano enjoy lengthy waiting lists, Ferrari's flagship can occasionally be bought right off the showroom floor. Does that make it a bad car? Of course not - the least desirable Ferrari is, after all, still a Ferrari.

The problem is that the 612's elegant, reserved demeanor is decidedly at odds with the outrageousness that we've come to expect from Maranello. The entry-level F430's adolescent break-dance handling and ghetto-blaster V-8 encourage 8500-rpm upshifts and tire-smoke-drenched hole-shots. That kind of bad behavior seems juvenile in the polished Scaglietti, which feels best when it's cruising gently around town. Its V-12 is quiet inside the cabin, the ride is plush, and the steering is light, offering far less feedback than you'd expect. The interior is flawlessly finished, with beautiful leather on every surface.

Ferrari has made some subtle changes to the Scaglietti for its fifth model year, and one not-so-subtle change to the price. The cheapest 612 you can now buy retails for an almost incomprehensible $318,538. Last year, you could drive out of a dealership in a 612 for roughly $55,000 less. So what do you get for your extra money?

First of all, an updated SuperFast version of Ferrari's F1 automated-manual gearbox is now standard, complete with the aforementioned manettino. A manual transmission is no longer available. If you force it to, the updated 612 will haul its 4100-pound self to 62 mph 0.2 second sooner than before, in four seconds flat. The big coupe keeps accelerating to 199 mph, and it's that figure that is likely more impressive to potential 612 customers.

The updated Scaglietti also receives a Bose infotainment and navigation system and a glass panoramic roof. A center-console-mounted, three-position switch commands electrochromatic elements in the glass to help block the sun's rays and keep the interior cooler on warm days.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG spied

Spy photographers have perched themselves on the edge of the Nürburgring this week, catching a brief glimpse of the new Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG during performance testing. The standard E-Class isn’t due to make its official debut until the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, with the AMG derivative still over a year away.

Mercedes will abandon its SBC technology in favour of conventional brakes - albeit with the inclusion of wet-weather disc wiping and wheel-selective cornering brake control.

Ceramic discs will also likely be introduced into the new AMG range, as featured on the model caught in these spy shots.

The next E-Class will share many characteristics with the S-Class including the wheel-arch extensions, rising character line below the door handles, massive bumpers, and greenhouse.

A sculpted wide-frame grille, aggressive ‘nostril’ air intakes and a wedge-shaped profile should give the E63 a dominant silhouette.

Driver assistance aids will play a major role in the new E-Class, boasting lane-departure warnings, an eye-movement monitor, traffic-sign identification, road-condition sensors, and stability control that accounts for crosswinds, camber changes, and tire wear.

Expect Mercedes’ usual range of petrol and diesel V6 and V8 engines with a flagship naturally aspirated 6.3-litre V8 engine churning out over 370kW.

Ford Focus ST Mountune

Ford has announced today an approved Mountune performance upgrade for the Focus ST hatchback.

The Mountune Performance package comprises a larger intercooler, a high-flow air filter and re-mapped engine management software, increasing power to 256bhp and torque to 400Nm – lifting the fast Ford right into Audi S3 territory. The standard ST makes do with 222bhp and 320Nm.

The increases mean the 0-62mph sprint is shaved by 0.6 seconds to 5.9 seconds, and because the upgrade is Ford approved it does not affect the manufacturer’s warranty.

Priced at £1,120 plus fitting, the kit can be fitted to new or used cars by a select group of specialist dealers, a list of whom can be found at www.mountuneperformance.com. A performance suspension kit for the Focus ST is also under development, as well as upgrade packages for other Ford models.

2009 Nissan Armada LE 4x4

The Armada makes some sense if you need an SUV that can tow a large amount or go off-road, but for most buyers who are looking for extra space, a three-row crossover is a better option. Rare and movie cars will be sold at COYS Italian auction

COYS are once again running their famous Italian auction at Padova, in Northern Italy on October 25th, and one of the highlights of the sale is a 1964 Ford Thunderbird used in the 1991 cult film Thelma and Louise. “This is one of the cars used in the film which was shipped to Italy a few years ago having been purchased from the studio after the film was made,” said Gregor Wenner of COYS Italy.

He added: “COYS has a reputation for selling cars that have been in famous movies like the Batmobile that was sold in the UK in 2006. This 1964 Thunderbird is in good condition throughout and is going to receive a lot of attention from movie buffs worldwide." Three Thunderbirds are believed to have been used in the film. It is realistically estimated at between €25,000 and €30,000.

The auction will also see an extremely rare 1926 Bugatti T35 A whose first owner was allegedly Sir Malcolm Campbell.

This is a fantastic car which has already created a lot of interest,” said Gregor Wenner “We believe that it was delivered to Sir Malcolm Campbell and we are trying to confirm that at the moment. It is in very good, original and unrestored condition and was first delivered to the UK through J. Lemon Burton, of London, England.” Refer Department.

Some 80 cars are being put under the hammer at the Fiera di Padova, and amongst some of the other interesting cars that will be offered is a 1929 Isotta-Fraschini 8A Landaulet Imperiale by Castagna first delivered to Mr Penn, Vice President of American Tobacco, which later came to be R.J. Reynolds Tobacco. Mr. Penn developed the popular “Lucky Strikes” brand of cigarettes. The Isotta has been meticulously restored; all interior handles are silver plated etc. Refer Department.

Also on offer is a 1928 Lancia Lambda 8th Series Torpedo Lungo, with the Lancia family as its registered owner. The car has been comprehensively restored with a photographic full photographic record and is eligible for the Mille Miglia. The estimated price for this fantastic Lancia is € 130,000 to € 180,000.

Dodge Challenger Concept designer leaves Chrysler

Big name designers often skip from one job to another in the automotive world. Chrysler seems to be losing more than its fair share of artistic types, as the Auburn Hills-based automaker has lost two top designers in recent weeks. First, long time design chief Trevor Creed retired. Now Dodge Challenger Concept designer Micheal Castiglione has left for a smaller, more diversified design house.

Castiglione has joined Ken Okuyama Design as their chief designer where he will work on everything from eye glasses and furniture to trains and planes. Okuyama also has some automotive interests, including the K.O 7 open wheel and the interesting-looking K.O 8 coupe (above). During his 15-year tenure with the Pentastar, Castiglione's best work came in the form of the Dodge Challenger Concept, but he also worked on the Jeep Compass concept and the Chrysler 300 production car.

2010 Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid Spied

Though supplier issues threaten to delay the official launch, Mercedes-Benz continues to develop and test the 2010 ML450 Hybrid - its first SUV with hybrid powertrain.

Thanks to the partnership inked in 2005, the ML450 Hybrid, like the Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango hybrids, will also use a form of GM's 2-Mode hybrid transmission. In base form, the ML450 Hybrid will use a 3.5-liter V-6, although our sources suggest a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 could be offered - at least in Europe. As neat as that idea sounds, we think the gas version will be plenty efficient: Mercedes says the ML450 Hybrid delivers an impressive 30.5 mpg combined.

Should Mercedes find a supplier able to produce batteries in a timely fashion, the ML450 Hybrid could arrive at dealers as early as the fall of 2009.

Porsche Panamera teaser photo released

Finally, after thousands of spy shots and spy videos of the Porsche Panamera, the German car manufacturer decided to release something and shed some light on the car. It’s not much, but at least it’s something. We get to see a lateral shot of the front part of the car, which is styled in the typical Porsche style, no surprise about that.

We’re really interested on seeing the rest of the car, that’s where we want to see what Porsche did. But I really like the teaser photo, especially with the rest of the Porsche range, the Cayenne, Cayman, Carrera and Boxster just standing there and waiting for their more luxurious sister/brother to come out. Toyota Venza Runs Around West Hollywood

Thank heavens for camera phones. Levy was having breakfast near Sunset Plaza this morning when this blue, test-equipment laden Toyota interupted his coffee and danish egg white omelette and fruit plate. You’d actually be surprised how many cars with doodads and weird little baubles plastered all over the place roll around the Hollywood area.

Answer is: lots. Anyhow, the wheels on this jacked up Camry look like they came off a Lincoln–a proto MK?? CUV being Levy’s guess. As for yet another CUV crowding its way into an already flooded market? We’re betting Toyota Venza made much more sense when Toyota dreamt it up back in 2006 than it does today.

2010 Hyundai Portico – Spied

Hyundai may already have three SUVs in its lineup, but that's not stopping it from developing yet another. The 2010 Hyundai Portico, spotted here testing in Death Valley, will slot in below the Veracruz in terms of size, and just above the Santa Fe in terms of price.

Now, the Santa Fe isn't much of an off-roader, but the Portico will take the crossover idea one step further. Built on the same front-wheel-drive platform as the Santa Fe, the Portico will have a sportier calibration that's intended to make it feel more like a tall sedan than a compact SUV.

For instance, notice the wheels and tires on these prototypes. Compared to the Santa Fe, the Portico's setup uses what look like larger wheels and lower-profile tires. The overall roof line of the Portico is lower as well, another difference that should improve its handling compared to the Santa Fe.

Straight-line performance should be solid, as the 2010 Hyundai Portico will most likely stick with V6s in a bid to position it slightly above the Santa Fe. Expect to see the same 3.3-liter V6 found in the Sonata as the base engine for the Portico, while Hyundai's larger 3.8-liter V6 will be offered on higher trim levels. Expect to see all-wheel drive as an option, too.

Unlike many other crossovers in the category, the Portico will only feature seating for five. Hyundai figures that buyers who really need the extra room will upgrade to the Veracruz, so the Portico can concentrate on making the best of the room it has. Hyundai even toyed with the idea of sliding doors on the concept, but judging by these prototypes, it decided to stick with a more traditional setup for the production model.

Sales of the 2010 Hyundai Portico should start by the fall of 2009, so look for an official unveil early next year.

Mercedes-Benz Concept FASCINATION - More Photos And Design

Today Mercedes has published a number of additional photos and design sketches highlighting their forthcoming Concept FASCINATION design study. Because we've already detailed the model on one occassion, I'll abstain from doing so again; however, even if you caught the previous article, I highly recommend checking out the new photos and design sketches as well, as they're all really quite interesting.

From official press release: “The design study’s elongated body is dominated by the dynamic front-to-rear sweep of its lines which gives it a dynamically charged look, evoking movement even when the vehicle is stationary. This impression is emphasized by the long, frameless, side-window line which describes a continuous arc from front to rear, uninterrupted by a B-pillar. As a result, the large load space in the rear is integrated in the vehicle body cohesively and harmoniously while also increasing the impression of length and creating a remarkable sense of lightness. The side windows can be lowered completely – one of the fundamental genetic markers of every Mercedes-Benz coupé – to provide an uninterrupted view of the stylish way in which fine materials have been used inside the vehicle”.

2009 Dodge Ram Production

Chrysler calls the new Dodge Ram a "game changer" with its RamBox cargo management system and solid-axle multilink coil spring rear suspension being the most notable updates to the time-honored nameplate. It's also priced lower than the outgoing model, Chrysler says.

To ramp up production of the 2009 Ram, Chrysler invested $220 million in the Warren Truck Assembly plant, a facility that dates to 1937 and is nicknamed "Dodge City." The investment included expansion, restructuring and training which among other changes, put five times more quality assurance workers on the plant floor. The plant is also going to be recycling everything from tires and oil to alcohol wipes and mop heads.

Dodge Ram regular cab, crew cab and Quad Cab pickups in five trim levels will all be built at the plant. Chrysler will also build the truck at the St. Louis North plant in Missouri, and the RamBox cargo management system will be produced at the St. Louis facility.

2008 Renault Ondelios Concept

The Paris Motor Show sees the wraps come off Renault’s top-of-the-range concept car Ondelios designed for lovers of long-haul travel who set store by comfort and refinement. Ondelios epitomizes Renault’s vision of the high-end crossover, combining a comfortable ride with respect for the environment. Clear illustrations of that vision are the vehicle’s ethereal design, its interior layout, and an original hybrid powertrain.

The 4.8-metre-long, 1.6-metre high Ondelios has drawn inspiration from the world of aviation design to deliver high drag efficiency and a Cd of just 0.29. This long-distance voyager boasts sleek, smooth, amazingly fluid lines that make it appear as though it glides over the ground. It embodies Renault’s vision of high-end car.

The aluminium-finish grille is flanked by headlamp units that also suggest flowing motion, while its high-performance LED headlights are both longer lasting and more efficient. Another feature of Ondelios' aerodynamic styling is the boomerang-shaped tail lights. They are built into the bodywork and ringed with air extractors to control the flow of air from the wheel arches.

The glazed roof further emphasises the vehicle’s airy look and feel, bathing the interior in natural light. The steeply raked windscreen, which extends well down the bonnet, further accentuates this ethereal feel.

The butterfly-type side doors, which also feature an extensive glazed area, add a further touch of elegance to the car’s overall styling. They swing out and upwards as the sills slide down to facilitate ingress.

With torque of 450Nm between 1,700 and 3800rpm, the diesel engine provides comfort and flexibility at all engine speeds for long-distance driving pleasure. The 2.0 dCi unit takes Ondelios from a standing start to 100kph in just 7.8 seconds. Driving through a seven-speed, double-clutch gearbox, it affords outstanding driving pleasure, while keeping fuel consumption at a frugal 4.5 litres/100km and CO2 emissions at a lowly 120g/km – very impressive for a top-of-the-range vehicle.

In being flexible to consumer demand Holden has released a dedicated 2WD variant of the popular Captiva to afford customers the SUV practicality and fuel economy they want without the AWD capability they’ll most likely never use. The recipe too is starting to become more commonplace. Ford’s Territory has long offered a RWD only variant and other SUV manufacturers have caught on, with the likes of Hyundai, KIA, and Toyota all following suite.

Utilising a Bosch common-rail fuel injection system and a variable geometry turbocharger, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel develops a reasonable 110kW at 4000rpm and satisfactory 320Nm of torque which is on hand from a leisurely 2000rpm.

Fuel consumption is an acceptable 9.8 litres per 100km average (combined), which is a little more than a litre over the ADR claim, and is a decent figure for a vehicle of such bulky proportions.

On the up side internal proportions are exceedingly generous, especially in the rear leg room department (up to 939mm), and with 60:40 folding rear seats expanding the luggage capacity from 465 litres (to window height - seats up) to 930 litres (to window height – seats down) or 1565 litres all told, the carrying capacity is more than ample.

2008 BMW M3 Convertible

When heading to BMW to pick up its latest M3 Convertible, all sorts of questions flowed through my head. Will the engine be too highly strung? Will the car be rigid enough? Will the extra weight incur a performance penalty? Will my hair get messed up? What hair?

It will rev to 8300rpm, which is where peak power is made. In fact, we believe that it will rev higher than that. The way it delivers its power is semi-parabolic, with the redline seeming to be there only to maintain its longevity. But the engine wants to keep going. I wouldn’t be surprised if the test rigs regularly saw 10,000rpm when BMW was developing this masterpiece.

But open the taps and from around 5000rpm onwards, there’s a gradual transition to a trumpety bellow that just gets better and better with each passing notch of the tacho. From 6500rpm it’s sounding nothing like a V8 anymore and more pure-bred race car, until finally at 8300rpm it’s shouting a cacophonic, yet symphonic, melodic, and harmonic tune that nothing comes close to. Flick the paddle on the right-hand side and the whole experience starts again.

Unlike other V8s which make a nice noise but don’t go anywhere, this car is actually quick, with 0-100km/h taking just 5.1 seconds. When you consider the convertible is around 250kgs heavier than its Coupe counterpart, that’s some serious grunt. Not only that, but the final drive ratio is 3.15:1, so it’s got some legs too.

Well, as a convertible, to be sure, there are going to be compromises. Things like the boot space. It’s tiny with the roof down. That’s to be expected, but what is unexpected is the amount of rear legroom you’ll find. Adults can, and will, fit. It’s still best for short stints, however a quick trip into the hills, or along your local cafe strip, will still leave passengers refreshed.

The shove in the back you feel is the gearbox whacking the next ratio in, quicker than you’d ever get it done in a conventional manual. Little wonder why the M-DCT is 0.2 seconds quicker to 100km/h than its manual sibling. It’s a brilliant change that although quite sudden, never feels agricultural. But under very hard braking, the ‘box sometimes doesn’t downshift when you want it to, even if the revs would allow.

FiatIveco launch Nuova Campagnola

It looks like the Fiat Group isn't quite done with reviving old nameplates for new models just yet, as its Iveco truck division has launched a new Campagnola. The original Fiat Campagnola – Italian for "country girl" – was a Jeep-style truck made between 1951 through 1988, by which time some 40,000 examples had been produced and deployed around the world. It even served as the basis for the Popemobile until replaced by a Mercedes G-wagen.

The new vehicle, which will wear the Iveco badge, unlike the original Fiat (accept in South America), is based on the Iveco Massif truck and rivals the likes of the Land Rover Defender 90, HUMMER H1 and Jeep JT concept for authentic paramilitary appeal. The minimalist bodywork, believe it or not, was designed by ItalDesign-Giugiaro, together with Fiat's own Centro Stile.

It will only be offered in a three-door, four-seat body style with a 3.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel producing 176 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque driving through a six-speed gearbox and a selectable four-wheel-drive system. Customers can order one in any color as long as it's white or sage green, and the fist 499 will be specially-badged "Opening Edition" models. The new Campagnola will be built in Spain by Fiat's partner Santana and sold at a price of €29,800.

Ssangyong C200 crossover concept will appear at Paris auto show

Though it may smack of a number of GM products, most notably Saab’s, the Ssangyong C200 Concept is one of the more original concepts to come out of the Korean company to date, and certainly one of the most attractive. On display at this year’s Paris Motor Show, the C200 will feature a modest 2.0L four-cylinder engine.

Rated at 175hp (130kW) it won’t be a barnstormer, but it should provide for more than adequate city driving. Being designed as an urban crossover, that’s about all it needs. The six-speed automatic transmission reportedly sends power from the four-pot mill to all four wheels, but in what percentage isn’t yet announced.

The small engine and presumably good fuel economy make the C200 compliant with Euro V emissions standards, though whether the car will eventually be manufactured remains to be seen. If it is built, it could see European sale, though unless the design is changed significantly, expect a trademark/copyright battle along the lines of BMW’s prosecution of the Shuanghuan CEO.

Concept Fascination from Mercedes-Benz

Change is the most describing word for the current and future design line for Mercedes-Benz, after the brave change for the C-Class, the next one set for a new appearance is bigger brother, the E-Class. Already a lot of spyshots and other materials have surfaced, betraying the bold new line the designers have took, but this new concept is rumoured to represent a lot of ideas that will be implemented for the next generation E-Class, in both sedan and the highly anticipated coupe version.

It sure is a nice design, both futuristic and agressive, but you can clearly distinguish an elegance emanating from the bold lines and angles of the car. The exterior is highly personalized by the 2-piece headlights and the extended rear tail lights that give it a certain unique look. On the inside, Mercedes say that a V-shape of the outside is continued on the interior, with a dashboard displaying five tubes and silver dials, and the cabin can hold 4 passengers and their luggage quite easily.

In terms of power, the concept is set to be graced with the presence of new generation fuel-efficient engines, like the BluEfficiency one that will appear on the C250 CDI model, presented earlier today. We will all see the concept live next month at the Paris Motor Show.

2009 Renault Megane sedan spied

Sheer luck has led to our photographers snapping these images of the next Renault Megane sedan in France. While it may not be all that popular here in Australia, it is a very important car for South and East European and South American markets.

The new hatchback version is expected to make its debut at the Paris motor show later this year boasting a revolutionary new design which it will share with the sedan model.

The sedan version is just one of a long list of models available in the Megane range, including a coupe, convertible, estate and possibly a crossover.

Sharing its platform with the Nissan Qashqai, the new Megane is set to compete against the Peugeot 308, Fiat Bravo and VW Golf VI.

2009 MINI Crossover Concept

2009 Audi A3 pricing for the US

Audi has announced that the 2009 Audi A3 will go on sale in the US later this month. The revised A3 features restyled front bumper and hood, large single-frame radiator grille, revised headlights with LED daytime running lights, side mirrors with integrated turn signals and new door handles, while under the hood there have been some minor engine upgrades and the 2.0 liter TFSI is now available with quattro AWD and a ‘S tronic’ double clutch transmission. Customers will also be able to choose Audi’s magnetic ride suspension control. The engine range also include the 2.0 liter TFSI engine (200hp (147kW) and 207lb-ft (280Nm) of torque), the 3.2 liter engine (250hp (186kW) and 236lb-ft (320Nm) of torque).

Prices for the 2009 Audi A4 will start at $27,745 for the A3 FrontTrak 2.0L TFSI model and up to $37,800 for the A3 Quattro 3.2L V6. Like we said, US customers will be able to place their orders starting later this month.

2009 Toyota Avensis

Toyota revealed today new details on the 2009 Avensis that will make its official debut at the Paris Auto Show. Designed, engineered and built in Europe, the third generation Avensis is the largest sedan Toyota sells in Europe. While Europe is the Avensis’s largest market, the car is sold around the world (but not in the U.S.)

Conceived by ED², Toyota’s advanced design studio in the South of France, the all-new Avensis will be available in two body shapes, a sedan and a wagon. The new Avensis active and passive safety standards will now include new advanced safety specifications such as Steeringassist Vehicle Stability Control (VSC+), Adaptive Front Light System (AFS) and Pre-Crash Safety System (PCS).

Chevrolet Orlando at Paris auto show

Chevrolet will be using October’s Paris Motor Show to preview a seven-seat crossover aimed at the European market. To be shown as a thinly veiled concept car, the Orlando will be based on the upcoming Cruze sedan’s Delta II architecture, though the Orlando will be a larger, more versatile vehicle.

General Motors hasn’t released much more information than a pair of sketches, but did say that the vehicle would showcase the automaker’s latest-generation 2.0 liter turbo diesel, which puts out 150 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque (around 235 lb-ft.).

With a 2,760 mm wheelbase (108.7 inches), the Orlando will feature three rows of seats. The interior appears to be quite similar to what we’ve seen in spy images of the Cruze, with a waterfall center stack and switchgear out of GM’s current models.

Renault Megane officially unveiled

Today we have the official announcement of the new Renault Megane. We can see that the car’s design follows the Laguna III’s styling and, though the car is larger than the current generation Megane, it’s 8 kgs lighter. Under the hood, Renault will offer the new Megane with a range of petrol and diesel engines. Diesel powerplants range from 85 to 150 hp, while the petrol engine offer will include the 1.6 16V engine (available with 100 and 110 hp power output), the 140 hp 2.0 liter and the 180 hp TCe.

Depending on the market, Renault will offer five or six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. Also, Renault tried to make the Megane more environmental friendly, by adding biofuel-compatible engines (bioethanol and biodiesel) and by making 12 percent of the plastics (about 22kg) sourced from recycling.

The interior comes equipped with a lot of new features, such as combined analogue/digital instruments incorporating a new, easier to read colour-coded cruise control/speed limiter interface, hands-free entry and ignition, automatic locking as the driver walks away from the car, a Carminat Bluetooth® DVD navigation system and a custom-developed audio system (3D Sound by Arkamys).

The new Renault Megane will go on sale in November 2008 and Renault says that by 2010, the Mégane family will include six different models, each one with a distinct personality.

2009 Porsche Cayenne S Transsyberia

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is honouring the sporting success of the very popular Cayenne model series through the introduction of a new, special model, the Cayenne S Transsyberia entering the market in early 2009.

The term Transsyberia stands for the intercontinental rally from Moscow to the Mongolian Capital of Ulan Bator about 7,200 kilometres (4,460 miles) away. In 2006 a Porsche Cayenne for the first time won this highly demanding orientation and off-road rally. Then, entering the competition model for the Transsyberia Rally in 2007, Porsche again proved the outstanding competitiveness of a production-based Cayenne S in heavy terrain, finishing the rally first, second and third. And now, just a few weeks ago, the rally vehicle optimised to an even higher standard not only scored its third overall victory in the Transsyberia Rally, but even clinched all leading positions from 1 - 6.

Motivated by this outstanding series of success, Porsche is now for the first time presenting the new Cayenne S Transsyberia for road and off-road use at the Paris Motor Show (4 19 October 2008). Like the extra-robust rally model, the road-going version is also based on the Cayenne S with its 4.8-litre V8 naturally-aspirated power unit featuring highly economical and efficient Direct Fuel Injection. The big difference, however, is that the new Transsyberia comes with the high-performance power unit carried over from the Cayenne GTS, developing 405 bhp (298 kW) at 6,500 rpm and maximum torque of 500 Newton-metres (369 lb-ft) at 3,500 rpm.

The modifications of the drivetrain have an even greater effect on the vehicles acceleration in gears of particular significance under everyday driving conditions and in racing: The Cayenne S Transsyberia with manual gearbox completes the interim sprint from 80 120 km/h in fifth gear in 6.6 seconds, a substantial two seconds faster than the Cayenne S. In its top speed, in turn, the Cayenne S Transsyberia is just as fast as the GTS, reaching a maximum of 253 km/h or 158 mph. And it almost goes without saying that six-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission is available as an option.

The sporting qualities of the Cayenne S Transsyberia come out clearly through both the looks and the sound of this outstanding vehicle, the sports exhaust with two dual tailpipes featured as standard ensuring a truly muscular and dynamic impression.

The impressive top speed of the BRABUS-tuned C 63 AMG necessitates precise modifications to tires, suspension and brakes. The electronically limited top speed of 315 km/h (197 mph) is possible thanks to 19-inch high-performance tires from Pirelli or YOKOHAMA. The tires in size 235/35 ZR 19 in front and in size 265/30 ZR 19 on the rear axle are mounted on multi-piece BRABUS Monoblock VI, E or S light-alloy wheels. The front axle features these wheels in size 8.5Jx19, the rear axle in size 9.5Jx19.

The large wheels provide the necessary space for the BRABUS high-performance brake system. It features vented and grooved 380 x 37 millimeter (15 x 1.45 inches) brake discs and 12-piston aluminum fixed calipers on the front axle. The rear axle stops with 360 x 28 millimeter (14.2 x 1.1 inches) discs and 6-piston aluminum fixed calipers. These high-tech brakes can keep even the enormous performance of a tuned C 63 safely in check at all times.

2009 Dodge Challenger

Now this should be interesting. Despite all the nay-saying flying about the interweb in connection with the Dodge Challenger’s handling characteristics, Chrysler head designer Ralph Gilles is set to compete in the 2008 Targa Newfoundland with a Snake Skin Green 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT-8.

Gilles started with a Drag Pak edition car before doing his best to make the car stick, and more than a few forward thinking souls are asking if this could be the first sprouts of a road race package for the heavyweight Mopar. It’s possible. Not likely, but possible. Rally Newfoundland is a brutal road rally that covers just over 1,300 miles of some of the most challenging road Canada has to offer. It’s racing in its purest form.

5-Door Audi A1 at Paris auto show

Audi has just announced that we’ll get a look at a 5-door version of their A1 at next month’s Paris Motor Show. Carscoop says the vehicle on display in the land of wine and cheese will be closer to the production models than examples we’ve seen in the past, like the Tokyo example, which’s pictured.

While lower rung front-wheel drive models will likely be available, we’ve got our eyes and our hearts set on a possible S1 model, complete with 200 horses and all Quattro corners kicking.

2011 Chevrolet Volt

The Chevrolet Volt has caused quite a stir in the US and around the world as GM races Toyota to bring a next generation plug-in production hybrid vehicle to the market.

Its official reveal isn’t scheduled until September 16; however official images of the production Volt with members of GM’s executive team have been leaked onto the web.

The styling has been dramatically evolved from the initial Volt Concept whilst still retaining a futuristic appearance.

Unlike conventional hybrids, the Volt is driven solely by its electric motor, with an onboard combustion engine powering a generator which in turn feeds the Lithium-ion battery.

2008 IMSA Lamborghini Gallardo LP560

2008 Subaru Impreza sedan

The controversial new generation Impreza has returned for 2008 with a more recognisable profile. Subaru has now officially released the sedan variant of its all-wheel drive Impreza range - carrying a price tag identical to that of the equivalent model hatch.

Buyers of the Impreza R, RX and RS variants now have the option between either a hatch or sedan without having to take into consideration any price premium. The sedan model still boasts a five-star crashworthiness rating for occupant safety from ANCAP with Subaru’s Vehicle Dynamics Control stability system standard on all models.

The new generation Impreza has averaged more than 1000 sales per month with year-to-date sales up 12.5 percent - and that’s without a sedan model, until now. The Impreza sedan is 35mm higher with a wheelbase 95mm longer than the previous model which provides extra head and leg room.

The boot space has also increased by 45mm with more useable space thanks to the double wishbone rear suspension, with a split/fold rear seat included for the first time for even greater cargo carrying flexibility.

All naturally aspirated variants offer the choice of five speed manual and four speed SPORTSHIFT automatic transmissions.

2008 MINI John Cooper Works range

Another two race bred MINI’s have arrived in Australia for 2008 straight from the John Cooper Works production line at Plant Oxford in the UK. Both the Cooper and Clubman models have been given the JCW overhaul, raising their performance in line with the 2008 MINI CHALLENGE race cars.

Under the bonnet, the 1.6-litre twin-scroll turbocharged direct petrol injection engine has been coaxed into producing 155kW of power with maximum torque of 260Nm - which jumps to 280Nm during Overboost.

“The MINI John Cooper Works brand continues to reinforce MINI’s authenticity, providing enthusiastic sports drivers with the very fastest road going models available, powered by the very same engine that is used in the MINI CHALLENGE race series.”

This added horsepower has been extracted strictly with racing in mind, gaining new pistons, valves, turbochargers, intake and exhaust system while at the same time complying with the yet to be introduced EU5 emission standard.

The brakes, gearbox, suspension and exhaust manifolds have all been modified along with a recalibrated Dynamic Stability Control system and a unique Electronic Differential Lock Control which is activated when the DSC is turned off. The interior has been appropriately upgraded to match the performance, now featuring a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Anthracite finish roof lining and glossy Piano Black surfaces.

A final sentimental addition is the new 260 km/h John Cooper Works speedo which dates back to the 120 mph speedo of the Classic MINI Cooper S. Available in MINI Garages around Australia from September, the MINI John Cooper Works is priced from $48,800 while the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman carries a price tag of $51,300.

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Hyundai has announced its second of three SEMA Genesis coupes (not to be confused with the Sega Genesis game console). This one is a cooperation between the Korean manufacturer and Japanese performance accessory maker HKS.

Those in the tuning know will recognize HKS as turbo specialists, so it's no surprise that this show car will use Hyundai's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The engine receives an HKS GT Turbo upgrade along with new engine internals, an HKS Super Mega Flow intake, and a new exhaust system. Hyundai designed the coupe to be "tuner-friendly" and judging by the long list of accessories being developed by HKS the company has already made a new friend.

We like the subtle look of the HKS Genesis, which is in stark contrast to the busy design recently unveiled by Rhys Millen's team. This red coupe foregoes the usual tuner doo-dads and wings, settling instead for a body kit by Ken Style with grey accents running along the rocker panels. Large, graphite wheels look at home tucked in the coupe's wheel wells and work with a fully adjustable HKS suspension to give the car a ground-hugging stance.

We're eager to see who's responsible for the last Genesis coupe project, as well as the three Genesis sedans that will debut at SEMA. Hopefully HKS will give us an idea of performance numbers at the show as well. We'll have full coverage of the cars from Hyundai and everyone else live from Las Vegas this November.

Victoria police Hummer style

Victoria Police have announced plans to use five custom built Hummer H3s in a new operation to tackle the weekend violence in Melbourne’s CBD.

General Motors’ Hummer brand will be loaning the five vehicles to Victoria police with media reports suggesting the cars will be ready within five weeks.

The concept is for the Police force to stand out and have a stronger felt presence on city streets. The idea has already been in the works for some time, however the announcement follows yet another weekend filled with violence that left a 24-year-old man dead and another seriously injured.

“The idea of going to the Hummers is that it’s about trying to measure visible impact so we’ve got to try to introduce something which might look different to our current fleet of vehicles. We want to be visibly seen and we want to make sure the police out on the streets are recognisable and that we do reassure the public that we’re there.” Asst Commissioner Gary Jamieson said.

2009 Suzuki Equator Spied

We caught Suzuki's Nissan Frontier-based Equator pickup hanging out in California. We got our first glimpse of the badge-engineered truck at the Chicago auto show, where Suzuki showed three concept Equators. Each truck was aimed at a different Suzuki powersports buyer; one was set up for boat hauling, another was ready to follow dirt bikes off-road, and the third was designed for ATV riders.

Shown here as a crew cab, the Equator will also be available as an extended cab truck, just like the Frontier. Suzuki will offer two- and four-wheel-drive models with a choice of a Nissan 2.5-liter four-cylinder or 4.0-liter V-6 engine.

The new front and rear treatments are handsome and an improvement on the Frontier's look. With little else changing on the truck, we're eager to see how pricing of the Equator compares to similar Frontiers.

The 2009 Suzuki Equator is expected to go on sale sometime this fall.

In August 2008, the second stage will be accomplished: An all-carbon rear lid with an electronically extendable rear spoiler will be available by then. It will provide the “Super” SL with an even better high speed handling.

Ferrari F430 Scuderia

Ferrari F430 Scuderia is one of the most amazing performance cars to ever be built. By deleting 220 pounds and adding 27 horsepower, the F430 Scuderia was even able to beat the mighty Enzo around Ferrari’s test track. So with perfection seemingly hit square on the head, would Ferrari dare alter the Scuderia?

According to Motor Authority, Ferrari is planning to launch and open-air Spider version of the F430 Scuderia. The F430 Scuderia Spider is said to be readying for its debut by the end of 2008, with production earmarked for about 300 units.

Although the allure of a super Ferrari convertible is undeniable, there are just a few points that lead us to believe that the Scuderia Spider could just be too good to be true. The first and most obvious is that the Scuderia puts a heavy emphasis on lightweight. Convertibles are historically heavier than their fixed-roof counterparts – due to the need of added reinforcements – and the F430 Spider actually tips the scales about 155 pounds heavier than the F430 coupe. That means the F430 Spider starts out life a whopping 375 pounds heavier than the Scuderia — a number hard to over come even by deleting all items not directly related to driving.

Pictures of an alleged Scuderia Spider have also surfaced, but a few details don’t pan out on the car. While all the appropriate body work and badging appears in the photos, the car pictured has the F430’s standard interior, not the race specific innards of the Scuderia.

Despite the inconsistencies, the Scuderia Spider is rumored to debut before year’s end, so at least we will have an answer by the time we are toasting to the new year.

2008 Audi A4 Avant

Audi is quickly establishing itself as the fastest growing luxury brand in Australia, and its keen to continue this trend with the launch of the new A4 Avant. Carrying a reputation as the most successful premium station wagon in its class, it is available with a choice of two direct-injection engines.

Boasting the same level of technology as its sedan counterpart, Audi has shifted the newly developed five-link front axle forward to ensure ideal weight distribution. To begin with, Audi will give Australian buyers the option of two engines: the 118kW 1.8 TFSI with 250Nm, and a 105kW 2.0 TDI with 320 Nm. Fuel consumption is equally impressive with just 7.4 litres/100km for the 1.8 TFSI and 6.0 litres/100km for the 2.0 TDI version.

Both engines are mated exclusively to
