2009 Toyota Highlander 2.7-Liter Four-Cylinder

Automakers have responded by building clean diesels, E85-burning engines, and all varieties of hybrid powerplants. But sometimes the easiest solution is also the simplest: downsizing. In its current generation, Toyota's Highlander has only been available in V6 or hybrid models. But for 2009 the strong-selling crossover is now available with a four-cylinder under the hood. We put nearly 400 miles on the downsized model, and can report that compromising engine size doesn't necessarily relegate you to automotive purgatory—or the slow lane. But it does make for better gas mileage.

2009 Toyota Highlander 2.7-Liter Four-Cylinder Skeptics should note that the base 2009 Toyota Highlander's four-cylinder engine puts out roughly as much power as Toyota's fairly recent V6s. This Highlander's 2.7-liter unit is a double-overhead cam, 16-valve engine with dual variable valve timing. The engine—internally referred to as 1AR-FE—is rated at 187 hp at 5800 rpm and 186 lb-ft of torque at 4100 rpm, almost identical to the engine found in the all-new Venza we test drove recently. Also shared with the Venza is a six-speed automatic transmission, while the V6 Highlander gets a five-speed automatic with a slightly shorter final drive ratio of 3.478 (versus 4.356).

The four-cylinder Highlander is only available in front-wheel-drive and base-trim levels. Five passengers can be seated comfortably with the standard two-row seating setup, and seven will fit with the optional third row, which comes standard on the V6 model. The four-cylinder Highlander is rated at 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway, and can run on 87 octane fuel.

Standard equipment includes 245/65R17 tires, keyless entry, 40/20/20 fold-down second-row seats, cruise control and six-speaker stereo with MP3/WMA playback compatibility. And Toyota hasn't skimped on safety either. Hill-start assist, brake assist, stability and traction control, airbags for everyone, including the driver's knees, and active headrests are included.

Though it's the most meagerly outfitted of all Highlanders, climbing inside the cabin of the base model reveals reasonably well-finished surfaces, soft-touch materials, and instrumentation that is clear and well-designed—very Toyota, if you will. You might miss the higher-end pampering that comes from a leather-wrapped steering wheel and navigation, but the four-cylinder's cockpit is still a pleasant place. And details such as subtle LED lighting make nighttime driving feel even a little upscale.

You would expect a four-cylinder engine to provide subpar acceleration on a 3847-pound midsize crossover, but this Highlander moves with reasonable authority. It won't light up a drag strip or have you screaming for mercy as it pins your spine into your seat, but this engine makes for perfectly acceptable response, thanks to the six-speed transmission. It does a solid job of picking the right gear for the right speed. And shifts are quick and nearly imperceptible—this is a smooth gearbox. Cruising along at 60 mph, the tach registers barely more than 1750 spm.

Mercedes-Benz Delivers 1,500,000 E-Class Models Worldwide

Mercedes has delivered 1,500,000 units of their consummate E-Class since they launched it some six years ago. Of these, 1,270,000 units were sedan variants, while 230,000 units were of the estate variety.

Mercedes-Benz According to Dr. Klaus Maier, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars: "The current E-Class and its predecessor models have been the ‘heart’ of Mercedes-Benz for more than 60 years now. With its typical brand attributes that include safety, comfort, innovation, economy, and quality, the E-Class has delighted around 12 million customers worldwide across eight model generations.”

Of course, news of the Mercedes E-Class' sales success is bittersweet, as overall sales at Mercedes-Benz have dropped sharply the past several months. Nevertheless, in times of economic turmoil, one must look for bright spots in otherwise disappointing sales numbers, and 1.5 million units sold is certainly a figure to be proud of.

2009 Saturn Aura

The 2009 Saturn Aura lineup shuffles some trim levels and model names and adds some new features. This midsize sedan shares its basic design with the Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac G6, and Saab 9-3. Aura offers base XE, uplevel XR, and gas/electric Hybrid (formerly Green Line) models. XE and new-for-2009 XR 4-cylinder models have a 169-hp 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. XR V6 models have a 252-hp 3.6-liter V6. All XE and XR Auras have a 6-speed automatic transmission. This transmission replaces a 4-speed automatic on 4-cylinder Auras. The XE V6 model with its 219-hp 3.5-liter engine has been discontinued.

2009 Saturn Aura-12009 Saturn Aura-2The Aura Hybrid has a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that pairs with an electric motor for 164 hp total. This hybrid can shut off the gas engine at a stop, but it cannot run solely on electric power. It uses a 4-speed automatic transmission. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, front side airbags, and GM's OnStar assistance. Leather upholstery with heated front seats is available, as is a sunroof. Newly available for 2009 is a wireless cell phone link.

Aura sedans use GM's current Epsilon architecture, already several years old. A redesigned Epsilon II platform will be used for Aura station wagons slated as 2010 or 2011 models. Sedans will eventually adopt that structure, too. Sources say the wagons will be built in Europe by GM's Opel subsidiary.

2010 Toyota Prius – video

Now it begins to make sense: The previous performance art video teasers for the 2010 Toyota Prius were made up largely of edited shots from this teaser, with the Blue Man Group restored to its place. This one doesn't make any more or less sense than the previous videos, and there isn't much more to see, but it does offer a couple of chuckles. We would love to see how far you get with that eyedropper, though.

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti by Imola Racing

To miss with perfection should be a sin. So the moment Imola Racing even began to mess with the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, the heavens should open and swallow the German tuner whole.

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti -1Ferrari 612 Scaglietti -2At least it seems Imola was smart enough to not touch the engine. Instead this is likely just body enhancements. We don’t have much info on the kit. We do know its being considered a widebody because of the enlarged fenders and larger tires. There are also new front and rear spoilers as well as a two-tone paint job the is reminiscent of the first generation Corvette.

Mercedes E-Class AMG Coupe caught undisguised – video

This is the latest footage of the coupe out performing winter testing. Although the testers have no intention of rolling down the windows, hopefully Mercedes will take a page from the CLK’s book and delete the B-pillar to get the stylish hardtop convertible look of its smaller sibling. We expect Mercedes to offer a wide variety of V6 and V8 engines, including a 525 hp 6.3-liter V8 for the E63 AMG model. Judging by the taped over AMG badging on the cars in the video, this is latter playing in the snow.

2010 Lincoln MKT caught in the cold

Just a year after the MKT Concept debuted at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, Lincoln will be unveiling the production version of its new three-row CUV next month at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. Fortunately, our spy photographers have snapped the most revealing views yet of this new 2010 LincolnMKT being driven out on the snowy streets of Dearborn.

2010 Lincoln MKTAs you can see, the production MKT holds true to the design direction set by the concept with the largest version yet of Lincoln’s signature split-wing grille and that conspicuous kink at the base of the C-pillar. In profile, the MKT seems to share a roofline with the Audi Q7 that creates a soft arch from front to back, and the rear gate is also tilted far forward to avoid the upright, boxy look of a traditional SUV or CUV.

Kia Rondo7

We were lucky enough to get a second go in the Rondo7, Kia’s affordable and popular people mover. Kia has always been popular in the MPV segment, over six years ago Kia introduced the Carnival, an 8 seater people mover sub $30K. And nowadays Kia has surprised us again introducing a 7 seater people mover sub $25K, yes under $25,000 for the entry level model. This means for families with more than the average 2.2 kids who want more passenger room don’t have to settle for second best and buy used, families now have the luxury of going through the exciting process of ordering a new car.

Kia Rondo7-1Kia Rondo7-2This car is definitely for a family like mine and it’s so affordable, I couldn’t believe it when I looked up the price. Sure it doesn’t have a V8 engine or all the wizz bangs but it’s a purposeful vehicle that doesn’t look half bad and has some nice features.

The excellent fuel economy also means its lacking power, but I don’t mind, as I do not need to hoon around with a family, pram and shopping in the back. I was fond of the automatic transmission, smooth sounding gear changes and no clunks when shifting down the gears.

The interior pillars do not interfere with blind spots, making changing lanes easier, the windscreen is large which is important for me as I’m a very observant driver especially with my loved ones in the car. A great point to make mention is the view of the kids in the backseat, they’re not covered by large front seats so looking back to see which one started the fight is possible.

The height of the rear seats is a bit low as the kids in the back cannot see out the side door windows, which is not good as they tend to get bored quite easily. Being a parent who believes in communicating verbally and not in computerised games, the kids begin to annoy one another for fun instead of asking questions about the scenery.

Overall, as you may have guessed I grew to be quite fond of the Rondo7, it got us from A to B and would easily take us on a family trip to C. With the features, looks, excellent fuel economy and most importantly the price I would recommend taking the Rondo for a test drive when considering a new car.

Honda FCX Clarity to be launched in Japan

Following its successful launch in the US, Honda has begun leasing the Honda FCX Clarity fuel cell car in Japan, delivering the first vehicle to the Ministry of the Environment.

Honda FCX ClarityWhile Honda plans to lease the FCX Clarity to government agencies and selected corporate entities, the roll out is part of the company’s broader commitment to lease the FCX Clarity to at least 200 customers in the United States and Japan over the next three years.

A dedicated fuel cell vehicle, the four-seater FCX Clarity runs on electricity produced by combining hydrogen with oxygen and emits only water vapour. Honda claims the vehicle is twice as energy efficient as a petrol-electric hybrid with three times better fuel efficiency than a traditional, petrol-powered car.

The FCX Clarity is powered by the Honda V Flow fuel cell stack that powers the car’s motor. A breakthrough in the design of the fuel cell stack has enabled engineers to lighten the body, expand the interior and increase efficiency.

Launched in the US in July 2008, the FCX Clarity was the first hydrogen car certified for regular commercial use by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. One of the first customers to lease the FCX Clarity was Hollywood star Jamie Lee-Curtis. Other well-known Honda FCX Clarity drivers from the world of entertainment are actress Laura Harris from the television show 24 and film producer Ron Yerxa.

2011 Ford F-150

True truck owners, those who need to buy pickups for towing and hauling, need the practicality of a truck, but like everyone else, would like to use less fuel. Unlike the commuters who haul air in their trucks, true truck users don't have the option of swapping their pickups for economy cars.

2011 Ford F-150The obvious solution has been for manufacturers to start putting diesel engines into their light-duty pickup trucks, but the large price difference between regular unleaded and diesel, often about a dollar per gallon, has caused a rethink of that plan. Ford says it has put off (at least for a couple years) its previously announced plan to offer a diesel in the F-150 in 2010.

Instead, the company is developing a V-6 EcoBoost engine for the F-150 which employs turbocharging and direct-injection - a design that Ford says will deliver similar power to a V-8 engine - all while using less gas.

Such engines are cheaper to build than diesels -- less than $1000 more costly than a conventional V-8 in comparison to the $4000 or $5000 price tag of a diesel engine, according to Ford. That thousand bucks buys you more power, expected to top the targets of 340 horsepower and 340 pound-feet of torque from the 3.5-liter turbo V-6, compared with the 320 and 390 for today's 5.4-liter Triton V-8.

It will also return 15-20 percent better mileage, Ford engineers predict. That extrapolates to 16 mpg city/23 highway for the EcoBoost engine, compared with 13 and 18 for the V-8 today. EcoBoost-powered F-150s will arrive in showrooms in 2010 for the 2011 model year.

9FF's 1300hp Porsche 911 Based Draxster

A drag-racing Porsche 911? Why? Well, why not? Although Porsche's iconic sports car hasn't traditionally been a drag-strip competitor, the car's rear-engine, rear-drive layout is actually ideal for drag racing. Porsche specialist 9ff has just unveiled the DraXster, a boosted, 911-based supercar whose focus seems to be quarter-mile domination. It's a high-horsepower, high-torque lightweight 911 whose lack of aerodynamic aids suggests that it's not intended for sustained high speeds but rather maximum acceleration.

9FF's 1300hp Porsche 911 Based Draxster-19FF's 1300hp Porsche 911 Based Draxster-2The DraXster's 4.0 twin-turbo flat six puts out an estimated 1300 hp (970 kW) and 877 ft-lb (1190 Nm) torque. The car has also been lightened to 1168kg, and 9ff reports a 9.5-second run to 161mph (260 km/h). Yes, the DraXster is faster than a Bugatti Veyron. Thanks to the lack of adornments, the DraXster is low-key, with very few exterior details to distinguish it from any other 911.

Pricing, quarter-mile times and top speed for the DraXster have not been released.

2009 Volkswagen Routan Review

Minivans come and minivans go, but the existence of growing families is eternal. And whether you consider them hip or not, in the 25 years since Chrysler 'invented' the minivan, humankind has yet to devise a better way to mobilize four kids and all their stuff. In the previous paragraph, you will note we used the word invented in quotes. Fact of the matter is, those of us of a certain age recall an earlier vehicle that; seated six comfortably, was based on a car, shaped like a van, and had a sliding door on its side. Volkswagen’s Microbus.

2009 Volkswagen Routan -12009 Volkswagen Routan -2Routan is packed with features conducive to excelling at family duty. Attributes include two nine-inch video screens––for second-and third-row passengers, each capable of displaying video independently of one another. Remote keyless engine start and entry, a power operated rear lift gate, 12-volt DC and 115-volt AC electrical outlets, touch-screen navigation, 13 cupholders, and a 30 GB hard drive multi-media entertainment system all work in concert to help make mobile life easier.

The optional power folding third-row seat can be flipped for tailgating, or folded completely away for more cargo capacity. And, the main cabin doors on both sides of the Volkswagen Routan can be opened and closed electrically while featuring windows that lower completely.

Two engines are available, a 197-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 that makes 230 foot-pounds of torque, and a 253-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 that makes 262 foot-pounds of torque. Both engines run on regular fuel. Naturally, the bigger engine pulls the vehicle with more alacrity, but the 3.8 does just fine too, thank-you-very-much. Although frankly, given that the 4.0 is more powerful AND gets better fuel economy, we have trouble seeing why the 3.8 is even in the mix. According to Volkswagen, Routan is rated at 16 mpg in the city and 23 on the highway with the 3.8, and 17-city and 25-highway with the 4.0.

Honda Jazz Review

The old Honda Jazz has been at the top of the tree since its launch in 2002 and the company is eager to reassure us that new Honda Jazz is the same only better. This was a car that appealed to a wide range of customers, from driving instructors to little old ladies and even at the end of its production, the Honda Jazz still held third place against its competitors. Such is its attraction that it has been at the top, or thereabouts, of the sales charts every year, selling over 2 million, worldwide and picking up over 30 awards along the way.

Honda JazzAlthough the new version went on sale in October 2008, there has been little or nothing in the way of advertising. This is not an oversight on the part of Honda but rather that it doesn't need to because historically, over half of the people who bought the previous model, signed up for more of the same and are expected to do so again. Moreover, they were not shy about spreading the word to friends and family.

The front end has a vague hint of the Honda Civic about it with new, larger headlights and a honeycomb grille set into the deep font bumper. At the other end, the new LED taillights and black gloss trim that carries the Honda logo, serves to extend the angled, lower edge of the windscreen. The tailgate narrows near the rear bumper and appears to limit the load aperture.

A new feature, available on the 1.4-engined models, is the 'Double Trunk'. It is a clever piece of kit that makes the most of the 337-litre boot space. It has four functions with under-floor storage and a base that is split between solid and a framed cargo net to stop things rolling about.

2010 Peugeot 3008 – spied

The 2010 Peugeot 3008 has been spotted in France wearing a scant amount of camouflage, and unless Peugeot is deceiving us, it looks just like the Prologue HyMotion4 Concept from the Paris Motor Show. Updating the sheetmetal of the 4007, this crossover Pug gets a much smoother grille treatment and a combination of lines and curves out back suitable for a display at MOMA.

2010 Peugeot 3008-12010 Peugeot 3008-2The interior isn't revolutionary, but it's expected to offer seating for five or seven and looks like it will hold up to consumers cross-shopping the Nissan Qashqai and VW Tiguan. Four-cylinder turbocharged engines are predicted to be sized at 1.6-liters, burning either gas or oil and driving two wheels at launch, with a four-wheel-drive variant offered down the line.

Subaru Impreza diesel delayed for the UK

In this installment of "As the Yen Skyrockets," Autocar is reporting that the introduction of the long-awaited Subaru Impreza diesel has been delayed indefinitely due to unfavorable exchange rates. A source inside International Motors, the firm that imports Subarus into the UK, told Autocar, "At the current rate we would have to charge vastly more than we can justify for the diesel Impreza if we were to make a profit. As a result we can't guarantee when the car will go on sale as we can't predict when the economy will change."

Subaru Impreza dieselBoth Toyota and Honda are facing the same problem, with Honda CEO Takeo Fukui going so far as to threaten moving Honda's headquarters outside of Japan. Analysts predict that the yen could begin to sink in the coming weeks, but if the market doesn't correct itself, the Japanese government might have to intervene and begin devaluing its currency.

2008 Jeep Cherokee

Looks like a Liberty, drives like a Liberty, but once you cross the pond, it's called the Jeep Cherokee. European specs include the 2.8-liter common-rail turbo diesel (CRD) with a diesel particulate filter but the Cherokee's navigation system, with directions given with an English accent, and swanky interior distinguished the Jeep on a recent test drive.

2008 Jeep Cherokee -12008 Jeep Cherokee -2On a route from Florence to Siena along a scenic highway getaway through Tuscany, the Cherokee accrued approximately 125 miles roundtrip, with bouts of city driving in between. As a first-time driver out of the country, the prospect of driving in Italy was not a little intimidating but considering that the cars are right-hand drive rather than left-hand, e.g. Great Britain, it seemed do-able.

The walled-in medieval city of Siena, with unique street lights hanging from said walls to distinguish each neighborhood, allowed for few distinctive frames of reference. I should have made a better note of the street lights, but I did spot of a Jeep Grand Cherokee parked on the street, apparently by a resident. Like an oversized bread crumb, that marker would come in handy on my way out of town.

The all-new Jeep Cherokee is available with both a 3.7-liter SOHC V6 gasoline engine. The V6 produces 205 horsepower and 232 lbs.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm while the CRD engine enables the Cherokee to claim a best-in-class torque of 339 lbs.-ft. at 2,100 rpm with the five-speed automatic transmission, and best-in-class towing capacity of up to 2,800. Maximum power is 177 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission is also available.
With the CRD and automatic transmission, the Cherokee earns an estimated nineteen miles per gallon on the highway.

The MSRP on the Jeep Cherokee Limited.2.8 CRD is € 39.560 or approximately $59,340.

2010 Kia Soul

You can point toward the high cost of gas, raising concerns about the environment, or just what goes around, comes around, but small is big. Small doesn’t have to mean an austere, plain, prole-mobile, though. With vehicles like the MINI, Scion Xb and Honda Fit, small is hip and fun.

2010 Kia SoulAnd while Hyundai has been getting a lion’s share of attention with its new vehicles lately, especially the jaw-dropping Lexus-baiting Genesis V8 sedan, the Korean automaker’s cousin Kia has been making its own inroads with well-designed, high-value vehicles of its own, like the all-new 2009 Kia Borrego, available with Kia’s first V8. To take the brand even further up the automotive ladder, Kia is adding a real “personality” vehicle to define its youthful, carefree—dare we say it—Soul.

Enter the 2010 Kia Soul. Based on the subcompact Rio sedan’s running gear, and about the same overall length, this cheeky, squared-off, little 5-passenger, 4-door crossover slots in below the Kia Sportage SUV. And although it’s aimed at the Gen Y buyer (like the MINI Cooper and Scion Xb), its design, utility and value are sure to attract buyers across the board.

Which isn’t to say that those looking at the production model will be disappointed. We’ll know soon enough, as the Soul is planned to debut at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in late November 2008. Right now, though, our guess is it will be one of the most desired vehicles of the coming year.

Early specs say that the Soul may offer one of two engines: a fuel-thrifty 115-hp, 1.6L or a punchier 145-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder, with your choice of stick or automatic transmission. Like the MINI and Scion, the Soul will be exclusively front-wheel drive, making it more of an urban fun-mobile than a regular off-roader.

Splinter Wooden Supercar

Yes, this is a wooden car. Forget the jokes. Anyone making more than mere decorative use of wood in an automobile has heard them all. And doesn't care. Wood is a magnificent structural material, "God's own composite," proclaimed the late Frank Costin, the brilliant technologist behind the glorious shapes of early Lotus cars, the Vanwall Formula 1 car, and-significantly-the plywood chassis of the Marcos in which a young Jim Clark won some of his first races.

Splinter Wooden Supercar-2Splinter Wooden Supercar-1Three years ago, Joe Harmon, a twenty-eight-year-old industrial design graduate student at North Carolina State University, thought it would be instructive to make a wood supercar for his master's thesis, including some of the running gear and-unlike the Marcos-all of the bodywork. "I wanted to show that wood isn't an antiquated, low-technology material," Harmon says.

To achieve Harmon's goal of a fully fluid body surface, the team had to invent a wood veneer cloth to use in place of more usual glass-fiber or carbon-fiber weaves. That meant designing and developing specific looms, acquiring rolls of veneer five inches wide, slitting it into bands sixty feet long and an eighth- or a quarter-inch wide, weaving it into cloth to place in female molds, and then vacuum bagging it with epoxy resin. Those looms-wood, of course-are works of art, using wooden clothespins machined to feed veneer strips through their jaws. With too much tension, they slipped; if there wasn't enough tension, rubber bands attached to the clothespins compensated. It was wonderfully elegant, wonderfully simple. Once it was imagined.

Those wheels represent one of the biggest unknowns. Despite a fifteen-degree conical taper meant to spread loads over more wood fibers, Harmon thinks that the massive torque of his modified Cadillac Northstar engine may rip out the centers. To get heat away from the wooden structure, he has swapped the cylinder heads left to right so the exhaust ports are inboard, with the headers coming out the top of the engine below huge vents. The transaxle is a six-speed Corvette unit, which helps push the cockpit well forward, despite the 104.8-inch wheelbase. The hull weighs about 1100 pounds, and Harmon expects the final curb weight to be approximately 2500 pounds.

Mansory builds mysterious Bugatti Veyron Vincero

We’re convinced the Bugatti Veyron has to have the highest ratio of variants per total production — Ford Mustang included. There’s the Sang Noir, a first and second version of the Hermes, Pur Sang, Grand Sport, and now the Vincero built by Mansory.

Bugatti Veyron VinceroNot much is known about the car since no information is listed on the Swiss tuner’s web site, but United Arab Emirates exotic car dealer Prestige Cars has posted the car for sale, listing it as one of three built. Looking at the photos, the Vincero features a carbon fiber hood and engine cover, new black wheels, and an interior that has been reupholstered in black and white with carbon fiber trim. It’s not everyone’s taste, but we definitely wouldn’t kick it out of the garage.

2009 StudioTorino CoupeTorino

(from StudioTorino Press Release) PRESS RELEASE: COUPETORINO

Studiotorino presents a cultural, non-profit project: the COUPETORINO, a single to-scale model inspired by the iconic Mercedes SL spider.

COUPETORINO will make its debut December 12, 2008 at the “BESPOKE COACHWORK” exhibit to be held at Turin Gallery as part of the greater event “Turin World Design Capital 2008”. In cooperation with L’Istituto di Arte Applicata e Design di Torino (IAAD).

2009 StudioTorino CoupeTorino-12009 StudioTorino CoupeTorino-2As part of the event “Turin World Design Capital 2008”, Studiotorino presents a cultural, non-profit project. The COUPETORINO is a technical and stylistic study aimed at transforming series and off-set automobiles with reliable technical solutions while maintaining the car’s identity. With this objective in mind the iconic Mercedes SL spider was chosen as a lone specimen. Its original architectural structure was transformed into a true coupй.

Amongst the various design studies directed by STUDIOTORINO in cooperation with Istituto di Arte Applicata e Design (IAAD) and informally presented to the Mercedes Design Center in Como to Professor Peter Pfeiffer, a more typically Italian coupй style was chosen.

This project includes an accurate 1:4 scale maquette personally modeled by Alfredo Stola and a photographic exhibit presenting all of its developmental stages, from its conception to its realization. An in depth study presents all of the construction methodology and aerodynamics with the goal of creating a perfectly functional prototype with the reliability akin to that of series automobiles. COUPETORINO was presented on December 12, 2008 at the Premiиre held at Turin Gallery with an exhibit titled “Bespoke Coachwork”.

The Premiere of COUPETORINO to be held on December 12, 2008 in the exhibit “Bespoke Coachwork” at Turin Gallery will present in addition to a photographic exhibit of all the designs and developmental stages, a 1:4 scale model purposely without wheels, monochromatic in bronze on a transparent support as if a sculpture.

Nissan GT-R by Cobra

Cobra Technology is ready for the release of the Nissan GT-R on the European market. Although no cars have hit the street there (officially), it allocation for 2009 is already sold out. So the modified Cobra N+ GT-R may already be on a few European wish lists.

Nissan GT-R by Cobra-1Nissan GT-R by Cobra-2Cobra reprogrammed the ECU, boost pressure is increased by 0.15 bar, and the air intake is modified with sport air filters. It claims this increases the standard 485 hp to 550 hp (but also remember that GT-Rs will usually appear more powerful than they actually are on a dyno.)

Other upgrades to the GT-R include three-piece lightweight 21-inch Cobra N+ light-alloy wheels, eight-piston brake calipers, and adjustable coil-over suspension. There is also a body kit with Cobra N+ front apron with large air dams, rocker panels, and rear apron.

It’s a tough thing to mess with Godzilla. The engineers at Nissan spent about seven years getting everything right, so even a body kit may seriously mess with the aerodynamics from the factory. But if nothing else, Europe will love the black and gold paint scheme that should remind many of the John Player Special F1 racers of the 1970s.

Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT by Reiter Engineering

Reiter Engineering was on board for the development of the Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT racecar. So with a little extra tim on its hands, the people at Reiter decided to give this track-only car some modifications so it could be unleashed on the street.

Lamborghini Murcielago R-GTWhat makes this version recognizable from standard Murcielagos are the raised tail pipes and fixed rear wing. The important part is that its that this Murcielago is on strict weight saving diet. Expect to keep the current car’s 640 hp V12 engine, but like the Gallardo Superleggera, the Murcielago’s all-wheel drive system is ditched for the lighter and more race-friendly rear-wheel drive.

2009 Suzuki Grand Vitara

Base price: $19,249
Vehicle layout: Front engine, RWD, 5-pass, 4-door SUV
Engine: 2.4L/166-hp/162-lb-ft DOHC 16-valve I-4
Transmission: 4-speed automatic
Curb weight: 3479 lb
Wheelbase: 103.9 in
Lengthxwxh 177.1 x 71.3 x 66.7 (w/roof rails) in

Even before this year's massive gas-price-spike hit, buyers had begun fleeing the traditional SUV segment in favor of more fashionable and fuel-efficient crossovers. Automakers have noticed, and it's becoming increasingly difficult to find a compact SUV that's still actually an SUV. The 2009 Suzuki Grand Vitara is one of the few capable compact offerings left for the U.S. market.

2009 Suzuki Grand Vitara-12009 Suzuki Grand Vitara-2The last time a Grand Vitara graced our garage -- a 2008 4WD model -- we were pleasantly Gone is the overburdened 184-hp 2.7L V-6 engine. In its place is the standard 2.5L four producing 166 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque and an optional 3.2L V-6 producing 230 hp and 213 lb-ft of torque.

The two-row, five passenger 2009 Grand Vitara with just 1700 miles on the clock was fitted with the top-shelf Luxury trim package, the four-cylinder engine, and a four-speed automatic transmission. It was also 2WD, which meant I wouldn't be testing its off-road prowess. That's just fine, since most 'utes in the Grand Vitara's class spend most of their time on the pavement anyway.

The first thing you notice when you climb into the Grand Vitara is the simplicity of the interior. All the controls are within easy reach and easy to use, and there aren't too many of them -- enough buttons and dials to get the job done and no more. The black dash, carpet, doors and seats are set off by tasteful silver accents. Unfortunately, they're also offset by cheap-looking faux-marble trim around the gear selector and on the interior door handles. Marble works in kitchens, not cars, and cheap, plastic, fake marble really doesn't work. Still the trim is dark enough to overlook most of the time.

Although down 18 hp from our V-6 tester, the vehicle's four-cylinder engine actually feels quite peppy. Merging on the freeway and climbing hills requires only modest throttle input, as does passing on the freeway. Picking up my brother and his luggage did little to slow it down. What hampers the Grand Vitara more than the engine, though, is the old-school four-speed transmission. In most situations it's not a problem, but if you hit an incline on the freeway, things get ugly. The transmission constantly hunts back and forth between third and fourth gear, with third too strong and fourth too weak to make the climb. Worse, the downshifts are anything but smooth. A gearbox with at least one more cog -- say like the one in V-6 Grand Vitara -- would help immensely.

Ferrari F430 by TG-2

2009 Scion xD

All three cars in the Scion lineup are sort of deceptive. From a distance, each seems like nothing more than an economy car with a little added exterior style. But look a little closer and it quickly becomes clear that each Scion is surprisingly comfortable, with a nicely assembled interior plus lots of standard and optional equipment.

2009 Scion xD-12009 Scion xD-2The 2009 Scion xD is the perfect poster child for the whole lineup, as it's both inexpensive and reasonably refined. This subcompact hatchback distinguishes itself with a lengthy list of standard equipment and dealer-installed extras -- especially the audio options, proving Scion totally understands its customers.

While other automakers have made only auxiliary input jacks standard equipment, Scion has gone one step further with a regular aux jack and a dedicated iPod port that provides power and stereo head unit control. The xD is also one of the least expensive vehicles to currently offer an integrated navigation system.

As expected, the Scion xD delivers good fuel economy but still has adequate power. Even on the highway, the four-cylinder engine isn't excessively rev-happy. If you're about 6 feet tall or more, you might find the xD's interior a little cozy. Lack of legroom is the main problem, but the car can feel narrow, too.

Scion vehicles, with their gen-Y styling, are clearly aimed at younger buyers. However, you'll frequently find retirees driving Scions, as their value is undeniable -- the secret that they are basically low-priced Toyotas is out. Depending on use and personal preference, however, there are a few economy cars that come off a little better than the 2009 Scion xD. Nissan's Versa is roomier inside, the Honda Fit is a better all-around package and the often-overlooked Hyundai Accent has been a longtime favorite of ours.

Motivated by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 128 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque, the xD has adequate output for its class. Estimated fuel economy is a competitive 27 mpg city/33 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined with the five-speed manual and 26/32/28 mpg with the four-speed automatic. In our testing, an xD with the manual went from zero to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss

(from Mercedes-Benz Press Release) Mercedes-Benz and McLaren are adding the crowning glory to the model family of their highly successful SLR super sports car with a new, uncompromisingly spectacular car. There is neither a roof nor a windscreen to separate the driver and passenger from the outside world; they enjoy unadulterated high-speed excitement with all the attributes of a speedster. The new SLR Stirling Moss is also characterised by the most sophisticated technology and a breathtaking design which reinterprets the SLR legend. With 478 kW/650 hp the SLR Stirling Moss accelerates its V8 supercharged engine from standstill to 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds, and has a top speed of 350 km/h - no other series-production car is at the same time so open and so fast.

2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling MossThis extreme concept makes the new high-performance sports car a legitimate bearer of the name of the British motor racing legend and Mille Miglia record-holder Stirling Moss, who drove the legendary Mercedes-Benz SLR racing cars from victory to victory in 1955. The exclusive SLR Stirling Moss rounds off the current SLR family and is limited to 75 units. It is priced at 750,000 euros. The SLR Roadster will cease to be manufactured at the end of May 2009 as planned, and production of the SLR Stirling Moss will commence in June 2009.

Three letters are all it takes to make car fans hearts beat faster: SLR. In the 1950s the Mercedes-Benz SLR 300 celebrated victory after victory. It won the Mille Miglia, the Eifel race, the Targa Florio as well as the Tourist Trophy. It was driven by the stars of the time: Juan Manuel Fangio and Karl Kling - and, first and foremost, by the British racing driver Stirling Moss. At ten hours, seven minutes and 48 seconds he still holds the Mille Miglia record.

This is why the modern-day version of the legendary SLR carries the additional words Stirling Moss in its name. As the new SLR Stirling Moss unites the character of the current SLR models with the fascination of the SLR of 1955. The core values of both the historical and the present-day SLR models include an exciting new design, innovative technology, high-class materials displaying perfect craftsmanship, and, above all: a unique driving experience for all the senses.

Mersedes-Benz BlueZERO concepts in Detroit

Mercedes-Benz has released images and information on three concepts in what it calls ‘electromobility’ that it will show at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. The German company says the concepts are based on a single vehicle architecture, which it says is an intelligent, modular concept that allows three models with different drive configurations, all of which are able to meet customer requirements in terms of sustainable mobility.

Mersedes-Benz BlueZERO concept-1Mersedes-Benz BlueZERO concept-2The concepts are: the BlueZERO E-CELL with battery-electric drive and a range of up to 200 kilometres using electric drive alone; the BlueZERO F-CELL (fuel cell) with a range of well over 400 kilometres using electric drive and the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS with electric drive and additional internal combustion engine as power generator (range extender). This version has an overall range of up to 600 kilometres and can cover a distance of up to 100 kilometres using electric drive alone.

Mercedes-Benz says the three BlueZERO variants are based on the unique sandwich-floor architecture which Mercedes-Benz introduced some ten years ago, initially for the A-Class and then for the B-Class, one of the aims being to integrate alternative drive systems. Advantages of the modified construction include the positive effect of the major drive components on the centre of gravity, their space-saving design and the fact that they are extremely well protected within the vehicle underbody.

The five-seater BlueZERO concept cars also set standards in terms of lightweight design, interior layout and body form. The company says all three BlueZERO variants share the same key technical components, while the design and vehicle dimensions are identical. Measuring just 4.22 metres in length, the BlueZERO models combine compact exterior dimensions with a generously proportioned and variable interior and luggage compartment.

Five fully-fledged seats, a payload of around 450 kilograms and a luggage compartment capacity of over 500 litres make for outstanding everyday practicality. All three variants accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in less than 11 seconds. Their top speed is electronically limited to 150km/h in the interests of optimal range and energy efficiency.

2010 Mercedes Benz R-Class facelift

Sales figures for the R-Class haven’t managed to live up to the expectations of the German luxury brand, but Mercedes Benz is determined not to completely write-off its ‘Grand Sport Tourer’ just yet. The R-Class received a mild facelift last year to help turnaround flagging sales, but a second and more extensive update is in fact planned for the 2010 model year as previewed by these latest spy shots of a prototype caught testing in Germany.

2010 Mercedes Benz R-Class-12010 Mercedes Benz R-Class-2The first facelift came less than two years after the vehicle was first shown at 2005’s New York Auto Show, and was implemented mainly to increase the car’s desirability. A cheaper RWD model was added to the lineup as well as a more flexible seven-seater model, but other than that the car remained mostly unchanged.

For the next update Mercedes will give the car a major styling overhaul with a new front-end planned as well as a slightly revised rear and interior. Expected to be launched in the second half of next year, the new R-Class will likely receive the same squared-off treatment as the rest of the Mercedes lineup including angular headlights and a larger more prominent grille.

Honda cancels development of V10-powered NSX successor

Amid the announcement of its third profit warning of the year, Honda has confirmed that it has canceled plans for the launch of a successor to the NSX supercar. The new V10-powered model was expected to arrive in the United States next year as an Acura, but sadly all development work on the car has come to an end. Honda CEO Takeo Fukui confirmed the plan in his end of year speech, saying that all development of the car would cease. Fukui also revealed that plans to introduce the Acura brand to Japan in 2010 have all been canned, reports Automotive News.

Honda The news comes less than two weeks after Honda announced that it planned to pull out of next year’s Formula One season, citing financial constraints as the main reason. Honda also announced today that it is lowering its annual operating profit forecast by 67% - its third profit warning of the year. The carmaker now expects its operating profit for the business year to March 31 to be $2 billion - down 81% from last year.

Instead, Honda will focus on developing more fuel-efficient hybrid and diesel models, especially in the compact car segments. Plans for a minicar positioned below the Fit (Jazz) are still on track, as are plans for the CR-Z hybrid sports car.

1,104 hp Zenvo ST1 Danish supercar

Over the years, we’ve seen a lot of supercars created by small companies, but this definitely is one of the most interesting we’ve seen lately. Created by the Danish startup company Zenvo Automotive, the Zenvo ST1 is a rear wheel drive supercar powered by a turbocharged and supercharged 7.0 liter V8 engine delivering an whooping 1,104 hp. Yup, no typos there, 1,104 hp. With the engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, the ST1 sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.0 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 375 km/h (233 mph).

1,104 hp Zenvo ST1 -11,104 hp Zenvo ST1 -2And if that’s not impressive enough, the car also looks extremely attractive, with polished stainless steel exhaust outlets, carbon-fiber body panels, light tinted glass, forged aluminum wheels (19 inch front and 20 rear) and the mettalic paint.

According to Zenvo, the ST1 has been in development since 2004 and they hope the first customers will get their cars next year. Though no mention on the pricing, one thing’s for sure, those will be some really lucky customers.

2009 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

There aren't many heavy-duty pickups to choose from. There are four to be exact, and even then, two of them are virtual clones of each other. However, competition remains fierce in this small group, as each battles for the hard-earned dollars of truck-buying folks and their businesses. One such truck is the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, which, together with its GMC clone, is the most recently redesigned and appealing member of this exclusive 3/4-ton class. Specifically, the Chevy provides superior vehicle control and top-notch interior quality to go along with the type of prolific hauling and towing capabilities one expects from such a workhorse truck.

2009 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD-12009 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD-2Changes are light for the '09 Silverado 2500, with only a few trim and equipment updates for the new model year. The rest of the truck remains unchanged from its total overhaul two years ago that debuted new styling, a dramatically improved interior, better vehicle control and handling, a more powerful engine lineup, a stronger frame and the resulting higher payload and towing capacities. This is a truck that'll get the job done and keep you comfortable while doing it.

Whether you opt for the Silverado HD or its GMC Sierra twin, you can't go wrong with these heavy-duty trucks. The Ford F-250 is its closest competitor, but the GM trucks offer a bit more hauling and towing ability and arguably a better interior (particularly with the LTZ trim). The Dodge Ram 2500 is also available, offering nearly equal towing ability and ride comfort, but it is getting along in years and will soon be replaced with an all-new model. It can't match the Chevy's towing capacity, cargo bed configurations or interior quality. That leaves the Chevy as your best bet, but since brand loyalty is so vitally important when it comes to pickups, we're guessing that gold bow tie should be reason enough for many buyers.

The standard engine in the Chevy Silverado 2500 is a 6.0-liter gasoline-fueled V8 making 353 horsepower and 373 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. Optional is a 6.6-liter turbodiesel Duramax V8 that boasts 365 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque. It gets a different six-speed automatic and is the go-to choice if you require a burly tow vehicle (it also gets better fuel economy). Properly equipped, the 2500HD can haul up to 3,458 pounds and tow up to 13,000 pounds.

Rear-wheel drive is standard across the board, with four-wheel drive optional. Although the Work Truck 4WD gets a traditional floor-mounted transfer case, the two other trim levels available on the Silverado 4WD get Autotrac, a knob-controlled electric transfer case that features an automatic setting that engages 4WD when wheel slippage is detected.

2009 Volvo S60 Concept

(from Volvo Press Release) An early Christmas present from Volvo Cars - a glimpse of the next-generation Volvo S60

2009 Volvo S60 Concept-12009 Volvo S60 Concept-2A few days before Christmas, Volvo Cars treats the automotive world to an early unwrapping of a car that will shine bright in the streets for years to come. The Volvo S60 Concept gives the car world a glimpse of what the all-new Volvo S60 is going to look like when it arrives in 2010. The coupe-inspired lines that gave the original S60 its characteristic stance are even more pronounced in the next generation.

"The sporty design gives visual promise of an enthusiastic drive and I can assure you here and now that the all-new S60 will live up to that promise. The driving properties are better than in any previous Volvo. The car's technology will also help you to be a better and safer driver," says Stephen Odell. The concept car reveals that the Volvo Cars design team is stepping up to the next level in the development of the products' DNA.

"The concept car's exterior gives a clear indication of what customers can expect of the all-new S60. On the inside we've been even more daring - there the focus has been on creating a vision of the future in the slightly longer perspective," says Volvo Cars Design Director Steve Mattin.

The engine that Volvo Cars has chosen for the Volvo S60 Concept is a four-cylinder 1.6-litre petrol unit using high-efficiency GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) technology and producing 180 horsepower. In a conventional petrol engine, fuel is injected into the inlet manifold ahead of the inlet valves. With direct injection, however, the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber under high pressure. The engine in combination with a range of other technical measures makes it possible to cut carbon dioxide emissions to 119 g/km (5.0 l/100 km).

Subaru Legacy Concept to debut next month in Detroit

The 2009 North American International Auto Show will mark the debut of the Subaru Legacy Concept, a vehicle which has two purposes: one is to celebrate 20 years since the Legacy was introduced for the first time and second is to preview the Japanese carmaker’s next generation midsize sedan, which is scheduled to debut in early 2010.

Subaru Legacy ConceptUnfortunately, we’ll have to wait until the show to get more details on the car, because all we have so far is this teaser photo and some rumors that a new 3.6-liter flat-6 engine will power the car.

Maserati MC Sport Line – Video

The Maserati MC Sport Line made its debut at the beginning at this month at the Bologna Auto Show. And today the company revealed a video with the car at the show. There’s no new info on the car, but a video of a Maserati is always good time. The MC Sport Line adds front and rear carbon-fiber spoilers, side skirts with a matte black central panel, carbon fiber mirror housings and exterior door handles, and glossy black 20" wheel rims. Maserati also added performance enhancing elements. The suspension has been upgraded to stiffer springs, shock absorbers and anti-roll bars. There’s also new software for Maserati’s Stability Program, which the company says allows the driver "more freedom".

HSV W427 - 200 vehicle build cap

Holden Special Vehicles has today confirmed that it will cap the production of the HSV W427 at 200 vehicles - and the final number will be determined when last orders are taken in June next year. The $155,000 HSV is the most expensive HSV ever. Packing a 7.0-litre LS7 V8 engine, HSV claims it sprints from 0-100km/h in the mid four-second barrier, making it an ultra-fast Aussie hauler.

HSV W427-1HSV W427-2HSV Managing Director, Phil Harding said “The W427 program has been a great success, ahead of target and ahead of plan.”

The final W427 will roll off the production line in the latter part of 2009, prompting HSV to remind potential purchasers to place orders quickly for this very limited edition HSV.

“Existing W427 customers have told us they want to keep their purchase as exclusive as possible and some potential customers have asked us for clarification on exactly how many W427 Supercars we intend to build,” Mr Harding said.

HSV says 96 cars have so far been built and about another 40 orders, the car is only confirmed for construction when a retail customer places a confirmed order, are on hand, which leaves about 60 places in the order book for the remaining cars.

So if you’re intending on sinking $155,000 into a HSV, join the queue quickly!

STRUT Hummer H2 Matte-Black

Many people find Hummer vehicles as being too big, too thirsty and too damaging from an environmental point of view - and they're all probably right. However, if there's one positive thing that can be said about Hummer's off-road models that has to be their communicative and distinct styling which sets them apart from anything else you see on the road. Even better when the color of choice is a matte-black like the one on this heavily customized H2 show car that is scheduled to be featured in both DUB and Truckin' Magazines in 2009.

STRUT Hummer H2 Matte-Black-1STRUT Hummer H2 Matte-Black-2Aside from the cool paint job, the blacked-out H2 also features an array of accessories such as flat black 24-inch alloy wheels, a STRUT body kit, chipped engine, upgraded suspension and even a 'grenade' like shifter.

The overall cost of the custom work performed on the H2 is said to be valued in excess of $60,000 - and that does not include the price of the vehicle itself of course.

Aston Martin Vantage 4.3-litre

Following the launch of the new 4.7-litre V8 Vantage, Aston Martin has introduced a retrospective-fit power enhancement and Sports Pack option for owners of the original 4.3-litre Vantage. The power upgrade will see peak power rise by 15kW to 298kW, with a modest torque increase from 410Nm to 420Nm resulting in a higher top speed of 285km/h and an improved zero to 100km/h time.

Aston Martin Vantage 4.3-litre The package has been developed by the Aston Martin engineering team and includes a revised induction system using technology previously introduced on the DBS. The new air intake system has a pair of switching airbox-valves that open at 5,500rpm allowing additional air into the engine producing more power.

Engine calibration has also been revised to optimise ignition timing and improve compatibility with higher octane fuels.

The Sports Pack was first introduced on the 4.7-litre V8 Vantage earlier this year, and is now fitted to half of all vehicles produced - leading Aston Martin to provide the popular option to previous owners to enhance the handling characteristics of the car.

The package comprises uprated springs and Bilstein dampers, and lightweight forged aluminium 5-spoke wheels which help reduce unsprung mass, further improving the precision handling of the V8 Vantage.

New BMW Z4 videos

We’ve seen plenty of images of the new BMW Z4, but to really enjoy this BMW (and be particularly jealous) we have to check it out in motion. In the following BMW Z4 videos after the jump, you can see the roadster soul reaching a more mature and refined style. While this car has a long list of positive aspects, the only fault we can find is the weight; the Z4 weighs 1,480 kg for the S-Drive23i and 1,585 kg for the twin-turbo.

2010 Z4 Roadster at Detroit Auto Show

BMW has released the first details and images for its all-new BMW Z4 Roadster, which is set to make its debut next month at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show before going on sale in the following months. The design of the new Z4 comes out through classic details interpreted in a very modern style, highlighted by an automated folding aluminum roof.

2010 Z4 RoadsterThe hardtop brings the Z4 in line with the competition, opening and closing in 20 seconds. The weight penalty is offset by greater security, better visibility and greater comfort. The side windows are 40% larger than the outgoing soft-top model, and the rear window is fully 52% larger. The Z4 also keeps its classic roadster proportions, with a long hood, short overhangs, and strong shoulders. However, the car’s styling has been modernized with new integrated LED indicators on its flanks as well as on the head and tail-lamps.

The new car is slightly larger outside than its predecessor, offering significantly more comfort and storage. The new car is 5.8in longer, 0.4in wider, and 0.3in lower than the outgoing model. The wheelbase has also grown 0.1in to measure 98.8in from axle to axle. Two powertrains will be available at the car’s North America launch: a 300hp (224kW) twin-turbocharged 3.0L six wearing the new sDrive35i badge, and a 255hp (190kW) naturally aspirated version of the same engine in the sDrive30i model.

What’s most impressive is the torque characteristics of the turbocharged mill, which maintains its peak levels of 300lb-ft through a broad rev range from 1,400 to 5,000rpm. This allows the car to accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.0 seconds flat and reach an electronically controlled top speed of 150mph when equipped with an optional sport pack. The 0-60mph acceleration time for the sDrive30i, meanwhile, is 5.6 seconds.

While both models are available with a manual six-speed gearbox, the Z4 sDrive35i is available also with a dual-clutch sport automatic transmission featuring seven gears. The six-speed sport automatic is available on the Z4 sDrive30i. Both sport automatic transmissions feature steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

2009 Volkswagen Tiguan

Talk about being late to the party. The hors d'oeuvres are long since gone, the DJ looks ready for bed and the revelers are doing the Electric Slide for the third time. Still, tardiness may not diminish the appeal of the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan to the compact crossover SUV crowd.

2009 Volkswagen Tiguan-12009 Volkswagen Tiguan-2Don't bother looking the name up in the dictionary. You won't find it, as it's a concoction from VW's marketing department. We're told the name's a melding of tiger and iguana, which nearly makes for an entire zoo, given that the Tiguan is based on the same platform as the VW Rabbit. The Tiguan gets VW's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine -- the same sprightly workhorse that also sees duty in the GTI, GLI and Audi products such as the A4 and TT.

In general, the Tiguan doesn't stray too far from the typical compact SUV design. It seats five, is offered in front-wheel or all-wheel drive and has nearly all of the latest convenience and safety features. But the Tiguan does offer a neatly tailored Euro design as well as the high-grade cabin treatment for which Volkswagen has become known. It also boasts composed handling and a comfortable ride.

These aspects help the Tiguan stand out a bit at the crossover party. But is it enough? Well, for people who have bought VW products in the past, the Tiguan will no doubt be a hit. And those who like to drive will find its Teutonic driving dynamics appealing.

But there are some downsides, including a price tag at least a few thousand above comparable vehicles and a smallish cargo capacity. As such, you might find models like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 to be more practical. There's also the Nissan Rogue, which is similar in concept to the Tiguan but less expensive. Still, the 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan could be a nice alternative for discerning consumers looking for a little spice in a mostly bland segment.

All Tiguans are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 that makes 200 horsepower and 206 pound-feet of torque. The S can be had with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission, while the SE and SEL are automatic only. The latter two trims are also available with VW's "4Motion" all-wheel-drive system.

2009 BMW Z4 Roadster

We never know exactly what we’re going to get when BMW introduces a new product. Most agree that the new 7-series is a visual improvement over the vehicle it replaces, but then there are all-new vehicles like the X6 that we’re still trying to figure out, both from an aesthetic and functional point of view. We do, however, know exactly what a roadster is for and are often swayed by powerful turbocharged engines, so this new Z4—with its updated styling, optional turbos, and retractable hardtop—is likely to win us over.

2009 BMW Z4 RoadsterWe’d love to get right into the details, but first a little bit of housekeeping is in order. About a year ago, the BMW X6 brought with it a new way of identifying the company’s all-wheel-drive models. The X6 xDrive35i and xDrive50i associated a brand, xDrive, with BMW’s all-wheel-drive systems. Now that clumsy nomenclature style is being spread to the rear-drivers, with the Z4—in sDrive30i and sDrive35i forms—being the first to be saddled with the longer name. We’re not sure how they arrived at sDrive and also wonder what confusion this was meant to clear up. (Were too many people asking dealers for the all-wheel-drive Z4?) In any event, get used to seeing three times as many characters tacked onto future Bimmers.

As the names suggest, the new Z4 models will be powered by two familiar 3.0-liter inline-six BMW powerplants. The sDrive30i will pack the naturally aspirated version found in the current Z4 and making 255 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque, while the sDrive35i adds twin turbochargers to produce an even 300 hp and 300 lb-ft. Both will come standard with a six-speed manual, and they carry quoted 0-to-60-mph times of 5.6 and 5.1 seconds, respectively. Opting for a six-speed automatic in the 30i slows the time down a bit, to 6.0. The optional transmission for the 35i is a version of the M DCT gearbox introduced in the latest M3, a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual (or, as our German friends like to call it, a Doppelkupplungsgetriebe). Not only will the high-tech cogswapper lower 0–60 times—the quoted time is 5.0 seconds—but BMW also expects it to lower fuel consumption compared to the standard six-speed manual.

Aside from the new option of turbos, the roadster gets new styling that’s partly the result of the use of a two-piece aluminum retractable hardtop. While not a huge departure from the current styling, the stylish new look has nicely sculpted details and what may be the largest kidney grille in BMW’s current lineup. We’re glad to see a less-stubby trunk, which was lengthened in order to fit the two roof panels. This affords a large-ish trunk (6.4 cubic feet with the top down, 10.9 with it up) that BMW claims can fit four crates of large bottles—perfect for those operating a Z4-based Biergarten. Glass area and all-around visibility are increased, as well.

The automatic top deploys and stows in 20 seconds to reveal an interior available with BMW’s Sun Reflective leather, which keeps seats, interior panels, and the steering wheel cool to the touch in the face of those mean ultraviolet rays. An extended leather option for the 35i covers the instrument panel, sun visors, and passenger door handle with cowhide as well.

2009 Nissan XTerra

Most sport-utility vehicles are like apartment-dwelling Labrador retrievers: They’ve become soft—forgetting their original purpose in life was to work hard, get dirty and carry dead birds. Unlike most other SUVs, the 2009 Nissan Xterra feels as if it remembers its roots. Its floor and seats are inviting to muddy boots and wet raingear. Assertive fender bulges, prominent roof rack and black lower cladding stand out in the mall parking lot. Its stout ladder frame is based on that found in the Titan pickup. The XTerra’s cargo area can be had in hard plastic, and features 10 tie-down hooks. It has a tough-guy-loud exhaust and its ride is sometimes a bit harsh.

2009 Nissan XTerra-12009 Nissan XTerra-2The XTerra is not a throwback. No vehicle with standards like a 261-horsepower engine, electronic stability control, power windows, door locks and mirrors, cruise control, remote keyless entry and four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and options such as a 300-watt sound system and leather seats can be so accused. It’s just that the XTerra communicates that it’s ready to load up and head into the backcountry. And it doesn’t mind if a wet Lab rides along.

For 2009, the XTerra receives freshened front styling that includes a new grille and revised bumper cladding. Also new: All XTerra’s now come with side-curtain airbags, designed to protect both front and rear passengers. The Off-Road trim level now comes with roof-mounted driving lights. Inside, the 2009 XTerra gets a revised, easy-to-read instrument panel and new seat surfaces for every trim level.

The XTerra is powered by a 261-horsepower, 4.0-liter V6 engine that makes a peak of 281 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a five-speed automatic is available. Rear-wheel-drive is standard. Available is a traditional-style four-wheel-drive system that requires the driver to switch between two- and four-wheel drive. For serious off-roading, the driver can choose low-range four-wheel drive.

2009 Toyota Sienna

Styling
To answer that question, and others as well, we checked out Toyota’s latest edition of the Sienna, one of the top offerings of its type. Of course, credit should go to Chrysler for creating the segment with its Caravan/Voyager design in the first place, but many other manufacturers have refined and enhanced the concept in numerous ways: Toyota especially, having rolled out the Sienna in 1998. This first-gen model was much smaller (three inches narrower and five inches shorter in the wheelbase) than the 2009 model shown here, but remained in the lineup until 2003, despite the cramped accommodations. The current version that debuted in 2004 has gone through a number of changes. While we’ve heard rumors of a 2010 redesign, the 2009 Toyota Sienna offers excellent comfort, convenience and safety features, as well as being the only vehicle in its class with a choice of all-wheel drive (AWD). Optional 17-inch wheels are now available on LE models.

2009 Toyota Sienna-12009 Toyota Sienna-2Performance
Figure on being able to scoot from 0 to 60 mph in 8.0 seconds or less, assuming an empty load (which won’t be often, considering the 149 cubic-feet of cargo capacity). Tow rating is as much as 3500 pounds, suitable for light trailers. The revised 2008 EPA figures come in at 17 mpg city and 23 mpg highway for front-drive models, while the AWD versions rate 16 and 21, respectively. Those are fairly respectable numbers but can this bus corner? Well, with available safety features such as ABS, traction control, and an antiskid system, the Sienna comports itself surprisingly well. Its optional all-wheel drive is a plus for stable road holding on wet or slippery pavement.

Interior
The Sienna’s cabin is not only cavernous but also classy, dressed in quality fabric even on lower trim levels, and leather and wood-style trim on the higher-end models. Seating is comfortable throughout the interior, front to back, a fact that not all minivans can boast. One’s hindquarters sink into the cushy padding just the right amount, with the shape properly conforming. Our one small gripe, however. If you get the top-line Sienna, with power passenger seats, you lose two practical aspects: a small storage bin beneath the front passenger seat, and a folding function for that same seat. If you want these two features, choose the less-expensive LE.

Rinspeed to unveil iChange concept – Geneva auto show

The latest crazy contraption from Swiss coachbuilder Rinspeed will bow at the Geneva motor show, and as usual, this year’s concept is more than off-the-wall.

Rinspeed iChange concept Called the iChange, the car can be configured to seat one to three people and is powered by a 130-kilowatt electric motor. Rinspeed says the iChange is also zero-emissions, lightweight and has low aerodynamic drag.

The body design looks like something out of a 1950s vision of the cars of the future. It’s got a teardrop shape, prominent wheel wells and big headlights. It seats one person in its basic form, but the back of the car rises to allow two more to fit.

Rinspeed calls this feature an “electronic trick tail,” and didn’t offer specifics as to how this actually happens. A press releases did use the phase, “as if by magic,” to describe the process.

But based on past practices, this iChange will likely live up to its hype. Rinspeed has made Geneva its annual show of the unusual, displaying the submersible car sQuba in 2008 and the see-through eXasis in 2007.

Rinspeed’s first display in Geneva was a Volkswagen Golf Turbo in 1979, and the company has since carved a niche for itself with funky concepts and tuning.

-- JE DESIGN offers a tuning programme only shortly after the premiere of the new VW Scirocco
-- Body- and lowering kit
-- Complete wheel set "Multispoke" in 19 inch size
-- + 44 hp for the 2,0 litre TFSI

2009 JE Design Volkswagen Scirocco-12009 JE Design Volkswagen Scirocco-2The JE DESIGN engineers once again confirm that they are the fastest of their kind. The VW tuning experts from Leingarten near Heilbronn can already deliver an entire sport programme for the new VW Scirocco which has only been introduced a few weeks ago. This programme can be ordered from free accessory dealers.

Whenever somebody is looking for an individual, sportive appearance, he is literally unable to avoid ordering a suitable body kit from JE DESIGN who deliver the suitable components in OEM quality. That means the material consists of high-quality ABS and all parts are custom-fit as they are milled with CNC. The kit for 919 Ђ includes a front spoiler which already renders dynamism even when the car is not moving and is delivered with a centre spoiler sword in carbon look. The profile is also enhanced by side skirts with air inlets and a rear spoiler extension which perfectly matches the other components and is also available in carbon-look. The end muffler which is made of stainless steel and comes with 2 centrally positioned oval end pipes (899Ђ) renders an earthy sound and a stunning appearance. It is delivered with an EU operating license. Also available is a half system with 70 mm pipe diameter and increased by 11 hp.

JE DESIGN offers wheels measuring 8x19 inches with 235/35 R19 tyres in "shadow silver" (2,810 Ђ), "matt black / silver rim bead" ( 2,930 Ђ) or in "white pearl / polished front" (for also 2,930 Ђ). Also under the bonnet, JE DESIGN boosts the power of the VW – the performance kit (1,249 Ђ) increases the strength of the VW Scirocco 2.0 TFSI to 180 KW / 244 hp at 6,000 rpm. Thereby, also the torque rises from 280 to 350 Nm (at 3,350 rpm). And a VW Scirocco tuned by JE DESIGN accelerates from 0 to 100 in only 6.6 seconds and is therefore 0.6 seconds faster than its serial counterpart. The maximum speed rises by 7km/h to 242 km/h.

2008 Saturn Astra

The 2008 Saturn Astra is available as either a two- or four-door hatchback. Both versions are very small cars, with Motor Trend saying that the "Astra is a true subcompact" at "167.3 inches long for the five-door." For those who love European styling, Car and Driver brings good news, saying that "the only differences between the Astra built by GM's German subsidiary for sale in Europe and this new Saturn edition are its badges and minor exterior trim" changes.

2008 Saturn Astra-12008 Saturn Astra-2Revamped styling for the brand doesn't stop on the outside of the Astra; Saturn’s interior sports a fine design that Road & Track claims "exudes an aura that is definitely not of this continent." Edmunds raves about the interior, claiming that "the cabin is the Astra's strongest point" and noting that "Opel clearly had Volkswagen in its sights when it designed the Astra's interior." ConsumerGuide takes a more middle-of-the-road approach, adding, "While Astra's interior does nothing to impress in terms of style and design, it's pleasant overall, if a bit bland."

When bringing the Astra over from Europe, the people at Saturn decided to make life easier for the indecisive among us; accordingly, "a 138-horsepower, 1.8-liter four-cylinder is the only engine" available on the 2008 Saturn Astra, according to Cars.com. While occasionally underpowered, the Saturn Astra's four-cylinder powerplant holds up well around town.

And while the 1.8-liter engine doesn't provide a lot of oomph, the 2008 Saturn Astra is a wonderfully composed car on the road. Edmunds finds that the Astra is "pretty fun to drive...thanks to its European-influenced suspension tuning." ConsumerGuide also points out that even "base-suspension models offer better than average overall control." One drawback of the Saturn Astra's sport suspension is that ConsumerGuide feels that it can "make for a rough ride on nearly all types of pavement." Kelley Blue Book reviewers write that "the Astra's steering is firm with good on-center feel and the handling is sporty with excellent stability." Harnessing the Astra's momentum is "a good-sized set of discs at all four corners with standard ABS" that Car and Driver says give the 2008 Saturn Astra "better than average" braking performance.

100th Tesla Roadster delivered

The 100th Tesla Roadster has been delivered in the course of this last week, showing that perhaps there is still a market out there for the Californian company that specialises in electric cars. While it’s an expensive vehicle at 109,000 USD, a recharge of the battery costs between $2.50 and $5.50 and gives a range of 244 miles.

Tesla Roadster-1 Tesla Roadster-2Difficult times for Tesla have seen a lag in production from the 30 cars a week initially expected to be produced, down to 15. The original target of 30 was set to be reached by spring 2009. As long as the Roadster has its problems, the second model from the company, the Model S sedan, is unlikely to ever see the light of day.

The Tesla company is holding out for some government funding to continue production, which could be difficult in current economic times. Strange though, that governments are prepared to make anti-pollution laws but are often less prepared to finance the very projects that may achieve those aims.

2009 Ford Fiesta First Steer

Ford’s all-new Fiesta light car is funky, fashionable and fuel efficient and finally Ford thinks it may have found the secret to posting real sales numbers in the growing and competitive end car market. The current Ford Fiesta is a good car, but the company and particularly its dealers have struggled with shedding the ‘Falcon Car Company’ image and making real inroads into sales in the light and small car segments.

2009 Ford Fiesta -12009 Ford Fiesta -2With monthly sales of just under 500 units the Fiesta has not kicked the goals for Ford that it should have, but with a rejuvenated marketing team, led by recently appointed Vice-President of Sales and Market, Beth Donovan, a small car expert from the US, the company is now aiming to double that figure.

Ford believes that potential buyers will crossover from the bottom end of the focus market into the top end of the Fiesta market and while Ms Donovan was clear that no firm decision had been made on re-introducing the Ka, sub light segment car, this too could see a crossover between Fiesta buyers and those opting for the even smaller vehicle. Ford says the dramatic, eye-catching design of the new model is an extension of its acclaimed kinetic design language. Clean, sharp angular lines instantly differentiate the new model from its competitors, while a space age-like interior introduces an easy-to-master suite of operational controls.

A 1.6-litre engine with manual transmission is standard across the range, while an automatic transmission, matched to a 1.4-litre engine, is available as an option on all models except the three-door Zetec. The 1.6-litre engine with manual transmission delivers 88kW of power at 6000rpm and 152Nm of torque at 4050rpm. Fuel consumption is a frugal 6.1L/100km and carbon emissions are contained to 143g/km.

The slightly smaller 1.4-litre engine mated to the automatic transmission generates 71kW of power at 5750rpm and 128Nm of torque at 4200rpm. Fuel consumption is 6.9L/100km, carbon emissions are 164g/km, and all Fiestas are Ethanol-10 compatible. Fiesta will be available in both three-door and five-door body styles. The CL will be available in three-door or five-door guise, with manual transmission or optional automatic, and rides on 15-inch wheels.

2009 Volkswagen Jetta

For decades now, the Volkswagen Jetta has existed in its own special niche. It may seem like an oxymoron, but this compact VW has made a name for itself by being an upscale economy car. Although roughly the same size as econoboxes from the United States and Japan, the Jetta has long exuded a sense of solidity and refinement in line with illustrious fellow Germans sporting fancier badges.

2009 Volkswagen JettaThe latest-generation Volkswagen Jetta, which debuted four years ago, carries on this tradition. It's a little deficient in the "cool factor" that earlier Jettas had, but from an all-purpose standpoint, there's little to complain about. For 2009, the wagon body style -- cutely dubbed the Sportwagen -- returns to the Jetta lineup. Compared to the old boxy Jetta wagon, the new Sportwagen features a more tapered roof line, but retains an impressive amount of utility. In fact, this Jetta actually boasts significantly more cargo space than VW's new Tiguan compact SUV -- 18 more cubic feet with the seats up, 10 more with them folded.

Also notable this year is the new 2009 Jetta TDI. The popular diesel-fueled TDI trim level has been MIA the past few years due to new government emissions regulations, but implementation of "clean diesel" technology has allowed VW to bring back the TDI. The new model is 50-state-certified and returns an impressive 34 mpg combined on the EPA testing cycle. A significant boost in power makes this fuel-efficient model even more attractive, although the rising price of diesel doesn't help the TDI's value equation.

The 2009 Wolfsburg Edition sedan and SEL Sportwagen get the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine found in VW's high-performance GLI sedan and GTI hatchback. It produces a zesty 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual is standard, while VW's slick dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission is optional. These two models should sprint from zero to 60 mph in the 7-second range, while fuel economy is roughly the same as with the base 2.5-liter mill. The manual yields 20 mpg city/29 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined, while opting for the DSG improves fuel economy by 2 mpg city and 1 mpg combined.

Mercedes Classe E Coupé - video

Mercedes has let slip out a couple of official shots of its E Class sedan, and now we pass from spy shots to a spy video of the E Class coupé. Here we get a good look at the first impressions of the Mercedes sports effort. In this test run, alongside the CLK, the car is put through its paces in the cold. We can see some change in design, moving towards a more sports style, with less of the cruisy sedan look. There are some similarities with the official E Class sedan shots that were leaked, especially in the lights.

Fisker Karma

Henrik Fisker has a dream, and an honorable one at that. "We see no reason style and performance need to be sacrificed to attain fuel efficiency and environmental responsibility," says Fisker, designer of the Aston Martin DB9, V8 Vantage, BMW Z8 and the upcoming plug-in hybrid Karma sedan. That's a tough message to get out there, though, since many people can't seem to reconcile the thought of driving excitement with environmentally friendly design.

Fisker KarmaTo help break down those obvious barriers, Fisker Automotive has brought aboard Russell Datz, a man who has previously worked with Lotus for the U.S. launch of the Elise and Panoz, makers of Ford-powered boutique sportscars. Datz is also familiar with going as fast as possible, having owned an Audi 5000 Turbo Quattro and autocrossed a Honda CRX. Welcome aboard, Russell! We're happy to see a longtime gearhead filling another desk at Fisker Automotive and wish you the best of luck in your new position.

Holden Captiva has the last laugh in Shanghai – Video

Marketing gurus earn rather healthy salaries in return for providing companies with the exposure they need to succeed in the marketplace - although seemingly all it takes is an angry woman from Shanghai. In what has become a rather lucrative endorsement for the local Holden Captiva, this genuine video shows a lady arguing with a tow-truck driver before taking matters into her own hands - sure beats the current ‘Go Better’ campaign.

Volvo S60 rendering

This rendering from AutoWeek of the Volvo S60 shows some risky style elements that form part of the general visual experiment. It appears that the S60 as a medium sedan is still choosing between a muscular look or a more elegant and traditional sedan look.

Covini C6W – 2009 six wheel supercar

From all other angles, however, it looks really good and after nearly 30 years of planning and development, in 2009 we will finally see this dream of Ferruccio Covini come true. The C6W is an acronym for Covini 6 Wheeler, and it will be produced in a limited series.

Covini C6W -1Covini C6W -2From 2004, the year in which the first prototype debuted, the original creation from Covini still surprises for its mix of sacred and profane. The C6W has some peculiar elements from the six wheels at 20 (at the rear) and 16 inches, which improve braking and reduce acquaplaning. Thanks to its limited weight at only 1,150 kilos, the Audi V8 4.2 litre engine (380hp and 450Nm) manages to reach more than 300 km/hr.

The thought of being on board is not so weird now, as downright scary at the idea of whizzing along at that speed. At least we can be confident that with six wheels, no take-off is likely to occur.

Ford Focus ST Mountune

Hurry up with the Focus RS, Ford. If ever there was a car to whet the appetite for next year’s Evo-killer, the Focus ST Mountune is it: concrete proof that a front-wheel drive Focus can handle 300bhp without torque-steering itself intoan Armco-flavoured double-knot.

Ford Focus ST MountuneMountune – the Ford tuning firm better known Stateside as Roush – has fitted the standard Focus ST with a larger intercooler, a high-flow air filter and revised ECU. That’s all. No suspension mods, no limited-slip diff, just a few engine tweaks to take power up from 222bhp to 256bhp.

That should spell torque-steer galore, but the Mountune is incredibly composed. Yes, flatten the accelerator in the wet, and the front gets a touch squirmy, but for the most part the power all goes where you want it: forwards. Quickly.

The Mountune is a full half-second quicker than the stock ST, but it’s the in-gear punch that really impresses. It’s not a revvy little loon like the Mountune Fiesta, but hit the turbo and the Focus piles on speed in a manner that’ll embarrass some seriously expensive machinery. All for just over a grand (plus fitting), and it won’t invalidate your warranty either. Your ST wants it.

And, importantly, it’s proof that the Focus can handle plenty of power. OK, the RS is likely to add another 50bhp or so, but don’t forget that it’ll get a diff and clever new ‘RevoKnuckle’ suspension. We can’t wait. In the meantime, though, this will do just fine.

2008 Lexus ES 350

2008 Lexus ES 350's appearance appeals to many, but some reviewers found its lines a little stodgy. Though it shares running gear with the Toyota Camry, Edmunds points out that “the ES doesn't share a single dash panel or material with its less expensive Toyota sibling.”

2008 Lexus ES 350-12008 Lexus ES 350-2The shape is vastly improved over the previous entry-level sedan from Lexus; 2008’s ES four-door has “a classy, conservative design,” Cars.com says, while acknowledging its “sharper angles and more defined body panel creases.”

Automobile agrees--the ES 350’s “all-new suit of sheetmetal is considerably more flattering than the ES330's bathtublike shape”—as does Motor Trend, which reports that “from the nose on, the sheetmetal flows into a rakish, aerodynamic body with a bit of the GS and IS sport sedans' flavor.” While Mother Proof describes the exterior of the 2008 Lexus ES 350 as "curvy and sharp,” Kelley Blue Book wonders if it may be "a bit too conservative."

Reviewers had few complaints about the interior. Car and Driver calls out the 2008 Lexus ES 350’s “posh interior.” The five-seat cabin “has a flowing dashboard design” that “looks a bit plain when finished in black,” Cars.com reports, but the controls “are easy to learn.” Edmunds waxes the most about the Lexus ES 350: “Inside the ES is a combination of indulgent shapes and textures that are as functional as they are pampering.”

At Lexus, 2008’s ES sedan is powered by a larger, 3.5-liter V-6 that makes 272 hp, a 54-hp improvement over last year's slightly smaller engine. Cars.com reports the engine is coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission (replacing last year's five-speed) and despite its larger size and increased power, is even more fuel efficient than that of the 2007 model at 19/27 mpg.

Rolls Royce Phantom in matte black finish

The matte black paint finish always gives a car a mysterious appearance and what more could you wish for when your car’s called ‘Phantom’. We have no idea who this special Rolls belongs to or where it’s located.

Rolls Royce Phantom-1Rolls Royce Phantom-2Anyways, this car really looks like a ghost: matte black finish, blacked out wheels, even the Spirit of Ecstasy got blacked out too. The black theme is applied to interior too, only this time it’s a glossy piano finish that somehow contrasts the ‘ghostly’ exterior. You have to admit, the Rolls is pretty cool, in a very morbid way.

2009 Ford Focus RS revealed

The highly anticipated Ford Focus RS super hatch has made its production model debut with a series of new official images and details. First showcased in concept form at the British Motor Show earlier this year, overwhelming positive public response has meant the showroom-bound version is true to form. Finished in Performance Blue as a tribute to the original Escort RS Cosworth and original Focus RS Mk1, the mechanicals also remain identical to earlier reports.

2009 Ford Focus RS -12009 Ford Focus RS -2The 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine churns out more than 220kW, which is transferred to the asphalt via a unique Automatic Torque Biasing limited-slip differential developed by British engineering specialist Quaife. This system works in conjunction with Ford’s new RevoKnuckle suspension setup to dull the side effects of such a high-powered front-wheel drive sports car.

Performance from zero to 100km/h is anticipated to be below 6 seconds with a theoretical top speed of more than 257km/h - simply astounding for a front-wheel drive hacth.

Completing the look are 19-inch multispoke wheels which draw their influence from rally, of course, shod in low-profile performance rubber while the interior boasts Recaro bucket seats with body-coloured accents, carbon fibre trim and aluminium highlights.

The new Ford Focus RS is expected to cost less than AUD$56,000 in the UK, keeping it roughly on par with the WRX STi and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X.

2009 Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro

(from Audi press release) The Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro: breathtaking performance

Ingolstadt Audi is launching the next variant of its top-of-the-line model. With the R8, the brand has established itself at the forefront of high-end sports cars from the very start and now comes the R8 V10. Its 5.2-liter, ten-cylinder engine churns out 386 kW (525 hp) and 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque, which makes for breathtaking performance. With superior Audi technologies such as quattro all-wheel drive, the lightweight aluminum body, the innovative all-LED headlights, and its striking design, the R8 V10 takes pole position against the competition.

2009 Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro-12009 Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro-2The R8 V10 is the result of cumulative know-how from Audis string of Le Mans victories. Its naturally aspirated engine combines racing technology such as dry sump lubrication with FSI gasoline direct injection. The ten-cylinder design is the perfect synthesis for impressive top performance, mighty pulling power, and low weight. Starting in 2009, this engine will also prove its potential on the worlds racetracks in the new R8 racing car Audi is developing for customer teams in conformance with the GT3 rules.

The V10 engine in the production sports car will be almost identical in construction to the one in the racing version. Its displacement is 5,204 cc, at 6,500 rpm it delivers 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque, at 8,000 rpm its power tops out at 386 kW (525 hp).

The specific power output is 100.9 hp per liter of displacement and each hp has to propel only 3.09 kilograms (6.91 lb) of weight, because the Audi R8 V10 in the version with the six-speed manual gearshift weighs only 1,620 kilograms (3571 lb). The engine accounts for 258 of these kilograms (569 lb) thats only 31 kilos (68 lb) more than the V8.

The Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro rockets from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 3.9 seconds. In the version with the sequentially shifting R tronic it reaches 200 km/h (124.27 mph) in another 8.1 seconds. Even then its propulsive power hardly lessens: its sufficient to reach a top speed of 316 km/h (196.35 mph). The immense force, the spontaneity and the thrust of the acceleration, plus the sound of the engine all these impressions coalesce into a breathtaking sports car experience. The V10 plays a concert with growling bass tones and powerful high notes, which grows into a grandiose fortissimo as the engine revs up. This sonorous acceleration doesnt reach its limit until 8,700 rpm.

2009 GMC Acadia

As high fuel prices have prompted folks to be more realistic about their vehicle purchases, the sales of large truck-based SUVs have dropped while those of more space- and fuel-efficient crossovers, such as the 2009 GMC Acadia, have risen. Crazy as it sounds, Americans are finally realizing that perhaps they don't need something that can pull a house and handle the Rubicon trail. For the more common tasks of shuttling the kids around, hauling 48-count toilet paper boxes from Costco and negotiating winter driving conditions, the Acadia is just about perfect.

2009 GMC AcadiaAlong with its corporate cousins, the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and Saturn Outlook, the GMC Acadia has a unibody architecture (as opposed to heavier body-on-frame) which allows better handling, interior packaging and crashworthiness. The Acadia also has a powerful V6 engine and can be had in either front- or all-wheel-drive versions.

What makes the Acadia especially attractive is its optimal use of space. Yes, it's large, about the same size as a Yukon, but it provides a more accommodating third-row seat along with a serious amount of cargo space. And yet, in spite of the Acadia's generous proportions and the fact that it gets a more powerful (288 horsepower) engine this year, this big SUV (in front-drive form) posts respectable fuel mileage figures of 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined.

The 2009 GMC Acadia can be had with either front-wheel drive or AWD. This year brings a new 3.6-liter V6 with direct injection that makes 288 hp and 270 pound-feet of torque, spread over a broad rpm range. It's matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. Though GMC has built its image around tough trucks, the AWD version of the Acadia is geared more for foul-weather driving than boulder-bashing. The system automatically varies the torque split from 90 percent front/10 percent rear to 35/65, respectively, as available traction dictates.

The front-drive 2009 Acadia has an EPA fuel economy estimate of 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined. The AWD version rates just one mpg less. The Acadia's towing capacity, at 4,500 pounds when properly equipped, should be enough for most folks.

2008 Ruf eRUF Model A Concept based on Porsche 997

(from Ruf press release) 2008 Ruf eRUF Model A Concept “ Emotion without Emission”

Ruf Automobile GmbH, internationally well known manufacturer for high performance automobiles and the producer of the famous CTR-series is now introducing the first electrically powered sports car from Germany.

2008 Ruf eRUF Model A Concept based on Porsche 997-12008 Ruf eRUF Model A Concept based on Porsche 997-2The fundamental ideas that lead to the development of the eRUF concept vehicle came from Alois Ruf. The car maker from the Bavarian town of Pfaffenhausen had a vision of a simple energy transfer concept: his hydroelectric power plants, which feed 35 million kW hours of electricity annually into the German electrical network, could also more or less directly power modern autos. 35 million kWh is enough energy to power one of the prototypes eRUF as described below for 3500 journeys around the globe – or 3500 of the cars one time around the world each.

The idea seemed even more inspiring, as it would be possible for him to connect cars directly to the emission-free power plants for charging and drive away on the water-generated power.

The eRUF Model A concept car is the first prototype to lead the technical development away from the combustion engine. Actually, for the first time an electric motor is being used which comes to fitting into the Ruf model range.

The three-phase AC motor’s performance easily puts many conventional conbustion engines to shame. It produces its maximum 650 Nm torque output from 0 rpm onwards. This power rips into the drive shafts so impressively during acceleration, that one is immediately reminded of the extremely powerful Ruf Rt 12.

A short discourse regarding efficiency might be helpful at this point: a highly-developed, modern petrol engine uses around 75 percent of the energy in its tank to heat the engine coolant and exhaust gas and only 25 to 30 per cent for actual propulsion. A diesel manages to convert a respectable 35 to 40 percent of its fuel energy into motion. The permanent magnet electric motor, on the other hand, is a model of high efficiency: it offers over 80 percent efficiency over the majority of its power range, extending 90 per cent in the upper end of its power range.

2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

In what is the clearest proof yet that paying attention to your rear view mirrors pays dividends, we noticed this virtually uncamouflaged Shelby GT500 sidle up next to us in the left turn lane at a stoplight in the snowy Detroit suburb of Royal Oak. When you live in Detroit and you write about cars, you have a camera in the car at all times, and since the guy was caught in traffic, the photographic onslaught was on.

2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500-12010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500-2We did our best to give chase but there was no way to do it safely, with the super-Shelbyfied 'stang taking off on a left turn faster than we could figure out where he took off too. We're imagining he called in the transport truck and disappeared Spy Hunter style. In any case, the new GT500 shares a lot of the styling elements of the current car with double vents on the hood, a huge aggressive upper and lower grille plus the not-so-subtle stripes on the hood.

What's new is the smoothly styled rear spoiler which compliments the new back-end. Check out those stylish new wheels. Pretty cool looking, huh? But what does it sound like? Sounds a lot like the current one, nice throaty exhaust with a tinge of cockle-stirring supercharger whine. We expect the new GT500 to drop at the Detroit Auto Show in January and yes, we'll be there to see it live.

The Reggie Bush Mercedes-Benz CLS ASMA Design Shark II On eBay

It appears no one is safe from what's now officially being called a recession, as even Kim Kardashian & Co. have resorted to pawning off their pre-owned goods off via the trusty eBay auction block. In addition to a host of garments and fashion accessories that in their prior life managed to adorn one of the finest asses in existence, another item especially noteworthy is the ASMA Design Mercedes CLS Shark II owned by Kim's boyfriend and New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush – the very same model that achieved worldwide notoriety when it made its debut in April of 2006.

The Reggie Bush Mercedes-Benz CLS ASMA Design Shark II Features of Reggie's 2006 Mercedes CLS500 include, among other things, ASMA Design's Shark II styling, Brembo brakes, 21-inch Lowenhart wheels, a custom suede interior headliner and a custom exhaust system, with the work being done by the renowned California-based Platinum Motorsports. Like all good celebrity auctioneers do, Reggie's also throwing in some signed plaques that highlight the CLS, and he'll also sign the car, should you so desire.

If you're interested in the Reggie Bush Mercedes CLS Shark II, you'll have to act quick, as there's just under 10 hours left on the auction timer. The current bid is $80,100 with the reserve not met, so getting your hands on Reggie's Mercedes isn't going to be cheap. Also, for the charitable among you, a little less than 5 percent of the proceeds are going to the Dream Foundation charity, so you can rest easy knowing that an extremely small portion of your winning bid actually went to a worthwhile cause.

Honda pulls out of Formula One

Earlier reports have been confirmed, with Honda having released an official statement outlining its withdrawal from all Formula One activities. The decision has been brought on by the deteriorating state of the auto industry as a result of the sub-prime problem in the United States, the deepening credit crisis and the sudden contraction of the world economies.

HondaHonda has acted in the best interests of its core business activities to secure its long term viability as uncertainties in the economies around the globe continue to mount.

2008 Ford Kuga 2.0 TDCi – Test drive

“She is very pretty,” said the middle-aged Frenchman, with a smile and polite nod. “So, are you happy with her?” Even allowing for any vast cultural differences, this isn’t what we expected to hear while standing outside a gas station in the north of Paris.

2008 Ford Kuga 2.0 TDCiLest you feel offended on our behalf, know that in French the word for “car” is feminine. The “she” our admirer was referring to just happened to be the diesel-powered Ford Kuga crossover that we were refueling. The Kuga’s fat-fendered and aggressive exterior earned lots of compliments and envious stares during our weekend together—although the gas station conversation was by far the strangest of the bunch.

Kuga’s beauty is more than skin-deep. Based on the same rock-solid C1 platform found lurking beneath the latest Euro Ford Focus (which finally arrives in the U.S. for 2011), the Kuga’s ride and handling shames many family sedans, not to mention most small sport-utes and crossovers.

Credit goes to Ford for creating a truly classy, comfortable, and sophisticated cabin. The silver finish on the center console is, of course, painted plastic. But it’s a million times better looking than black plastic or, heaven forbid, fake wood. One notable flaw was the nav screen’s tendency to wash out in direct sunlight. Even more serious was the Kuga’s poor rear visibility. This made parallel parking ponderously slow, and hyperactive parking sensors only made matters worse. The optional rear-view parking camera is a must-have.

There is room for two in the rear, but three adults would be a squeeze. Loads of useful nooks and crannies in the dash, door panels, and even under the floor help free up precious space for stuff, though. The cargo area accommodates 12.7 cubic feet of cargo with the 60/40 split rear seats up. With them folded down, cargo room swells to 47.9 cubic feet.

In terms of size, there isn’t much to separate the Kuga and the Ford Escape. The Kuga is 174.9 inches long and 67.3 inches high—fractions of an inch away from the Escape’s measurements. Where the Kuga sets itself apart from its American cousin is with its combination of sharp steering and suspension control.

2011 Audi R8 Spyder

The Audi R8 may still be one of the hottest entries in the sports-car world, but the hype has died down a bit. With its dramatic mid-engine proportions, it is still a stunning sight on the road, but waiting lists have shrunk in many places—in its native Germany, an R8 can now be had in just two to three months' time.

Audi R8oduce 398 lb-ft of torque, a much-needed boost in a competitive environment where—crazy as it sounds—the V-8's 420 horses and 317 lb-ft don't quite cut the beef.

Audi says both engines will be sold alongside each other, but we wouldn't be surprised to see the V-8 go away at a later point. On the road, they can be distinguished by the V-8’s small, quadruple tailpipes versus the wider double pipes of the V-10. They can also be easily recognized by their sound: the gloves are off with the V-10, and it will make you notice.

2009 Marangoni Alfa Romeo Mito M430

(from Marangoni Press Release) Marangoni Alfa Mito M430: tuning version with special red tyres!

The M430 is the striking new 2009 demo car for Marangoni Car Tyre, the division of the Marangoni Group that manufactures and markets car tyres, all strictly “made in Italy”. It will be exhibited for the first time in the world at the upcoming Essen Motor Show, to be held in Germany from 27 November to 7 December 2008, in hall 5, stand 128, hosted by Oxigin Wheels. Following the success of the 2008 Marangoni TRC Fiat 500, another Italian show car will be used to confirm Marangoni’s ongoing tuning interests.

2009 Marangoni Alfa Romeo Mito M430-12009 Marangoni Alfa Romeo Mito M430-22009 Marangoni Alfa Romeo Mito M430 is the car, with considerable changes to the bodywork, engine, interior, braking system and trim. The tuning project was again handled by the Florence-based TRC Italia, and for this truly sporting interpretation, Marangoni decided to develop a limited series of its ultra high performance Mythos tyres, using a special red compound, in perfect symbiosis with the new look of the vehicle.

The extensively tuned engine now delivers 220 HP, a good 65 HP more than the original version, with powerful delivery even at low revs. The power kit designed by Mariani also includes a new bearing-mounted rotary turbine, downpipe complete with metal catalyst, rear stainless steel exhaust with four pipes, and air filtering with special carbon air box.

Throughout 2008 and 2009 the M430 will be on display at many leading European tuning shows, with a schedule of more than 10 events.

Mitsuoka Himiko

Mitsuoka is best known for transforming existing cars into wannabe classic British-style rides, as well as its Orochi sports car, which is what happens after a Camry gets drunk and has a torrid one-night stand with a sea monster. The latest Mitsuoka effort, however, is an instant classic. It's called the Himiko, and it wants desperately to be a Morgan.

Mitsuoka Himiko-1Mitsuoka Himiko-2Appropriately, the source material for this fake British sports car is a Mazda MX-5, itself an homage to the classic British roadsters of old. Thus, how bad can it really be? And look, you can even get it with the retractable hardtop! It's as endearing as it is nutty.

2009 Honda Insight hybrid - Official pic

The production version of Honda’s Insight hybrid is headed for a fanfare-free debut at the increasingly desolate Detroit show in January: Honda has said that it will maintain a presence at the show, but will forego its normal press conference in light of the global economic downturn.

Honda InsightHonda says the new hybrid will feature “a new interactive, driver-focused fuel-economy enhancement technology named the Ecological Drive Assist System,” or Eco Assist for short. Although no further details were given, this sounds (in name, at least) a lot like Ford’s SmartGauge with EcoGuide that will take the place of a normal instrument panel on the 2010 Fusion and Milan hybrids. That system uses two customizable LCD screens to display information relating to fuel economy, range, and battery charge. Honda officials have suggested that the fuel economy would be about the same as that of the current Civic Hybrid, which is rated at 40 mpg in the city and 45 on the highway.

Power for Honda’s new hybrid-only model will come from a scaled-down version of the powertrain found in the Civic hybrid—a 93-hp, 1.3-liter four-cylinder paired with a 20-hp electric motor—and will also use nickel-metal-hydride batteries. Honda expects to build 200,000 Insights annually, half of which it will send to North America. Insight sales will begin on Earth Day in April 2009, and we expect a price of around $19,000.

Citroen GT – world's most amazing car

Stunning is all I can manage. If you’re a gamer and you drive in the Grand Turismo series, then you already know about the Citroen GT. As a virtual car designed to run in the video game series, which as of April 2008 had shipped a staggering fifty million units, it begs to be built.

Citroen GT-1Citroen GT-2It’s not often the French would ever heed the call of the “punters” or in this case, the “gamers” but that’s exactly what’s happened, Citroen have gone and built the GT. Yes, you can drive it on real tarmac to the shops.

But Citroen had some help with the GT, Kazunori Yamauchi who heads up Polyphony Digital – the outfit who created the Sony Play station game, collaborated with Citroen’s designer Takumi Yamamoto and created the virtual racer, without any intention of the car ever seeing the light of day.

Featured in ‘Grand Turismo’ the GT is powered by an electric drivetrain with a fuel cell and produces no ‘dirty’ emissions. The ‘real thing’ however, favours a ‘tuned’ 560bhp V8, said to be race bred and very quick. At a massive five metres plus, with 21-inch diamond-effect alloy wheels and huge air intakes, it’s a menacing looking thing, but at the same time gorgeous.

Citroen, the masters of avant guard car design have been climbing their way back to the style council for several years, with designs like the C4, C5 and superb looking C6. Let’s just hope and pray that some of the design cues that that have been realised in the GT, get a ‘go’ in the slightly more affordable department.

Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR Roadster headed for the auction block

Mercedes-Benz has stuffed the market to the gills with limited and special editions of its McLaren SLR supercar, but this is one we’re sure the automotive world won’t mind. Mercedes-Benz has announced that the last SLR to ever be produced will be auctioned off for charity in the U.S.

Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR RoadsterOf course, in true SLR fashion, the last SLR Roadster to ever be produced will be a unique edition. When the last SLR rolls across the auction block, it will be the only such car in America sporting Sienna Pearl metallic paint and a Tobacco Brown interior. The Sienna Pearl SLR’s engine bay won’t be quite as unique, as it will feature the same 617 horsepower 5.5L supercharged V8 found in other SLR Roadsters.

The auction is slated to begin on November 20th at 1pm EST, with the final gavel dropping at 5pm the same day. Mercedes will open the bidding at $529,500, with any amount beyond the starting bid benefiting the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

We suspect that the last SLR could creep up on the higher side of expectations as collectors tend to value the first and last editions of any production run.

Not only does the NISSAN NV2500 Concept provide an original take on Commercial Vehicle (CV) design, it also provides a preview of Nissan’s entry into the CV market in North America. 2009 Infiniti G37

When the famous Nissan Skyline finally arrived on North American shores in 2002 as the Infiniti G35, replacing the front-drive Nissan Primera-based G20, it gave the Japanese automaker's luxury brand a fresh face and a serious shot in the arm in terms of sales and popularity. It proved so worthy an entry in the U.S. market that it earned our 2003 Motor Trend Car of the Year award for its efforts.

2009 Infiniti G37-12009 Infiniti G37-2For the second generation, the Infiniti G lineup has received numerous revisions, a bigger, more powerful 3.7L engine, and now, a drop-top version in the form of the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible. Infiniti's second convertible might as well be its first, since few remember the short-lived M30 produced during the brand's formative years.

Arriving next spring, the hardtop G37 Convertible, which is making its debut at the 2008 Los Angeles auto show, will have several differences from its coupe relative. Infiniti says the design from the A-pillar back is all-new, including structural reinforcements in the chassis, a modified rear suspension, a wider rear track (62.8 in. with 18-in. wheels, 62.6 in. with 19-in. ones versus 61.4 in. for the coupe), and an extra 1.1 in. of overall width. The convertible hardware also adds a good chunk of extra weight, with the drop-top weighing between 4095 and 4110 lb versus the coupe's 3616-3668-lb weight range. The switch from top up and top down won't be lightning fast, either, with Infiniti saying that raising or dropping the top will take about 30 sec.

Other convertible-only modifications include pop-up rollbars, an adaptive climate-control system that adjusts with vehicle speed and top position, and a special type of aluminum interior trim that can be switched out for African rosewood. Convertible-only options include a wind deflector, climate-controlled seats, and a 13-speaker Bose Open Air sound system that features two speakers in both front headrests. Designed specifically for the G37 Convertible, the system uses digital signal processing and a noise-monitoring microphone to adjust sound to compensate for wind and other ambient noise.

2008 Ford Taurus X

When the Freestyle failed to capture the attention of the crossover-buying public, Ford took action. Designers slapped a three bar grille on the front end, got creative with the headlights and upped the power with a Duratec 3.5L V6 engine. And they changed the Freestyle's name to the Taurus X. Well, either nobody noticed or they just didn't give a damn.

2008 Ford Taurus X-12008 Ford Taurus X-2Ford is finally set to end the roomy crossover's misery in February 2009 when the last model is built at Ford's Chicago plant. Ford cited in a brief release that ditching the Taurus X will enable the Dearborn-based automaker to focus its attention on the seven-passenger Flex. Since the Flex is both cooler and better than the Taurus X in every way, we'd say that was a good call.

2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 4Matic

Mercedes-Benz will be going up against the all-new Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60, both of which go on sale in March and both of which, arguably, are better-looking vehicles. However, we expect the Q5 to cost a bit more than the GLK, but Audi of America has some time to try to wring a better deal out of its German parent. As was the case with Mercedes-Benz USA when it priced the GLK350, Audi and Volvo ought to benefit from the newly strengthened dollar against the euro. Surely Audi and Volvo's U.S. product planners are doing everything they can to bring their products here with base prices starting at less than $40K, now that Mercedes has laid down its $35K gauntlet.

2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 4Matic-12010 Mercedes-Benz GLK350 4Matic-2The Audi and Mercedes powertrains are pretty similar, though: the GLK350 offers a 268-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 mated to a smooth seven-speed automatic; and the Q5 is coming to America solely with a 270-hp, 3.2-liter V-6 and a six-speed automatic. Audi of America would do well to bring us its corporate 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine for the Q5 just as soon as it possibly can, in an effort to decrease the sticker price and increase fuel economy. As for the GLK350, which is EPA rated at 16 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, we'd rather see Mercedes bring us a fuel-sipping diesel than one of its coarse four-cylinder engines. M-B USA officials allow that they are considering both a four-cylinder and a diesel for future fitment. However, they will not offer the 3.0-liter V-6 that's available in the C-class sedan upon which the GLK is based.

The 3.5-liter V-6 provides plenty of straightline grunt and sounds pretty good when you hammer the throttle. It's possible to drive the GLK350 quite aggressively on a twisty road and come away feeling pretty satisfied, but there is clearly not the level of sportiness here that Infiniti builds into its EX35 and FX35 crossovers. This won't matter to most buyers, though, who will be more interested in the three-pointed star; the all-weather capability of the 4Matic system (it churned the GLK350 up my steep, snow-covered driveway handily, ABS grinding away); and the excellent front sightlines through the broad windshield and the expansive side glass.

2008 Dodge Ram 2500

The 2008 Dodge Ram HD is still instantly recognizable with its big-rig look, and Heavy Duty models with duallies stick out like sore thumbs.

The Dodge Ram HD is available in three cab styles, which dominate its exterior styling. You have the regular cab, Quad Cab (also known as a crew cab), and Mega Cab (which is essentially a jumbo crew cab). Edmunds writes that with its "jumbo-sized Mega Cab" and "big-rig styling," the Dodge Ram HD 2008 is "the manliest of this most manly truck category."

2008 Dodge Ram 2500Dodge Ram HD 2008 ST trims are "pretty bare-bones, offering little more than 17-inch wheels the SLT adds alloy wheels," says Edmunds. "A prominent 'gunsight' crossbar grille surrounded by bold brightwork (dark grey on the base ST) with squared-off fenders and wraparound headlamps" adorns the 2008 Dodge Ram HD, according to Kelley Blue Book, who comment, "Additional shiny bits and chrome wheels are part of higher trim levels." J.D. Power notes, "All Ram 2500 and short-box Quad Cab Ram 3500 models come with standard rear wheels, while all other Ram 3500s have duallie rear wheels."

Since the Dodge Ram 1500 receives a redesign in 2009, with the Dodge Ram HD models redesigned thereafter, the Dodge Ram HD 2008 interior carries over unchanged. However, as Edmunds reports, "An interior redesign a few years ago maintained the truck's freshness." They call it "a straightforward, user-friendly design," though "a slab of glossy, hopelessly fake wood placed front and center is the primary concession to cheesiness." Kelley Blue Book remarks, "Those who place a high importance on interior design and features may find more to admire in the Ram's heavy-duty competitors from Ford and GM."

The 2008 Dodge Ram HD is a powerhouse with either the HEMI or the Cummins diesel, but choose the latter for the ultimate in towing capability and fuel economy.

The standard engine is the 5.7-liter HEMI that makes "345 hp and 371 lb-ft of torque," notes Edmunds. They think the V-8 is "a competent all-around engine, but for serious towing and hauling (plus decent fuel economy), the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel is essential." The Cummins is the first truck-market diesel engine to meet the stringent 50-state federal emissions requirements.

Lexus LF-A spotting

Toyota's LF-A supercar, revealed in concept form at the Detroit auto show in 2005 and 2007 and shown in production form when it participated in the Nürburgring 24 Hours in June, has surfaced again.

Lexus LF-AThis time, the Lexus LF-A racing prototype was seen running a few laps on Nov. 24 at the Toyota Motorsport Festival at Fuji Speedway.

More significant for the car's eventual future as a production model was that avid race fan and likely future Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda, grandson of Toyota founder Kiichiro Toyoda, was at the wheel.

Toyota is expected to reveal the production LF-A in 2009 and to build about 500 cars starting in 2010 or 2011. The $300,000 supercar will be powered by a 4.8-liter, 500-hp V10.

Lancia Ypsilon next generation - spied

After news of the first testing to be carried out on the new Lancia Ypsilon, initial spy shots are emerging prior to the debut of this little piece of luxury in 2011. This is later than Lancia originally planned, according to auto, motor und sport, so we may as well enjoy the spy shot for the moment.

Lancia YpsilonThe size should remain similar to that of the current model, with a big change in style being the main factor. The new Ypsilon will follow the more eccentric lines of the Delta and should distinguish itself further from the competition.

In terms of more technical changes, the focus is on reducing emissions and increasing fuel efficiency, and so we could be seeing the introduction of a hybrid engine, anticipated by Fiat Powertrain and planned for 2011.

2010 Honda Accord CUV – Spied

A gap exists in the Honda lineup between the mid-size Pilot and compact CR-V SUVs, and the company might be filling that hole with an Accord-based crossover. Caught here wearing no camouflage, this bash-up mule could turn into a vehicle that would do battle with the new Toyota Venza.

2010 Honda Accord UV-1
2010 Honda Accord CUV-2Possibly based on the European-only Accord Tourer wagon, this CUV prototype wears the familiar U.S.-market Accord front end grafted to a Tourer body. There are fender flares pinned to the body sides, indicating a wider track, and masking around the C-pillar hides a stretched wheelbase. From the back, a rear differential makes it evident the CUV will get power to the rear wheels as well as those in the front, likely via Honda’s VTM-4 all-wheel-drive system. Power could come from the same 2.4-liter four-cylinder and 3.5-liter V-6 engines offered on the current Accord; the dual exhaust on this mule likely means it carries the V-6.

When asked to comment on the spy photos and its possible reponse to the Ford Flex and Toyota Venza, Honda stated simply that "it is always evaluating the needs of its customers." However unconfirmed, we’d expect that a mid-size crossover is all but guaranteed from a company known for being as forward-thinking as Honda.

Land Rover 110 SVX 60th Anniversary

There are two types of cars in the world, ones that get noticed and ones that don’t. The first category includes the likes of Aston Martin, Lamborghini, etc and now, we can safely say, it also includes the Land Rover 110 SVX.

Land Rover 110 SVX 60th Anniversary-1Land Rover 110 SVX 60th Anniversary-2The Land Rover Defender 60th Anniversary SVX Limited Edition is the supercar version of the Defender. Simply oozing cool as it drives through any part of town. “For those who want the ultimate Defender, the SVX special edition boasts an array of modern comforts and custom designed features, without compromising the vehicles go anywhere capabilities,” says Roger Jory, Land Rover Australia’s General Manager. “It’s the ideal way to celebrate Land Rover’s 60th birthday, and only 82 customers will be lucky enough to own a piece of history.”

The SVX still has a very noticeable visual resemblance to its 1948 predecessor, but this one was specifically conceived to celebrate Land Rover’s 60th Anniversary. Special features include satin black body wrap 60th decals, diamond turned five-spoke alloy wheels, tubular side-steps, reinforced aluminium front under shield, sunroof, heated seats, aluminum gear knob, and a Clarion audio system with sub woofer and amplifier. Underneath the skin not much is changed and SVX is still an exceptional off road vehicle. The limited edition model has a recommended retail price of $63,320.

2010 Audi A5S5 Cabriolet unveiled just in time for winter

The Audi A5 and its V8-powered S5 sibling are considered by many to be the most beautiful Audis ever created. For some time now it's been common knowledge that an open top variant of Audi's latest coupe was coming. We'll still have to wait until the Geneva Motor Show in March to see the A5 and S5 Cabriolets in the metal, but we now have details and photos of the pair. Fortunately, unlike so many other automakers, Audi has chosen to stick with a more traditional fabric top rather than an articulated metal contraption. The soft top is lighter than metal hard tops and Audi also keeps the bulk further under control with aluminum fenders.

2010 Audi A5S5 Cabriolet -12010 Audi A5S5 Cabriolet -2With the top folded, the trunk still has 11.3 cu-ft of usable space; try that with a retractable hard top. Europeans will get the usual array of gas and diesel engines in the drop top A5, but here in the U.S. we'll only be getting the 2.0L TFSI four-cylinder engine or the 3.2L FSI V6 that powers the A5 Coupe. The S5 is a different story. While the S5 coupe has a 4.2L V8 that it keeps until the end of the 2010 model year, the Cabriolet will immediately get the new supercharged 3.0L TFSI V6 that recently debuted in the new S4. The 333-hp V6 can be had with either the 6-speed manual or 7-speed S-Tronic dual clutch gearbox. The A5 and S5 Cabriolet go on sale here next fall, which is ironically just about when the open-air motoring season ends in many parts of the U.S.

2009 Mazda6 Diesel (MZR-CD)

Mazda has been the first Japanese manufacturer in Australia to fully utilise the benefits of diesel engines for passenger cars. Whilst the likes of Subaru, Toyota and Mitsubishi are limited in their diesel range, Japanese giant Mazda is offering diesel variants in the 3 and 6 model range. The arrival of the new Mazda6 meant the arrival of an all new Mazda6 diesel, or better known as the Mazda6 MZR-CD 2.2-litre Diesel. Mazda says the aim with the 6 diesel is to bring turbodiesel performance and its benefits within reach of everyone.

2009 Mazda6 Diesel (MZR-CD)-12009 Mazda6 Diesel (MZR-CD)-2The new 2.2-litre, common-rail, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine makes use of a variable geometry turbocharger as well as direct-injection. This allows an impressive performance figure of 136kW of power and 400Nm of torque, up 31kW and 40Nm on the old 2.0-litre diesel engine it supersedes. CO2 rating is 156g/km for the hatch and 159g/km for the wagon.

That’s a 30 per cent improvement in power, 10 per cent more torque and a new 0-100km/h of 8.5 seconds, a full 1 seconds quicker than the old model. Best of all though, fuel economy remains the same at 5.9L/100km in hatch form (6.0L/100km in wagon form), same as the less-powerful 2.0-litre engine.

This spirited and economical new-generation engine cements Mazda’s leadership as the only Japanese brand offering turbodiesel passenger cars to Australians. This new 2.2-litre turbodiesel delivers on the once conflicting attributes of robust and refined, powerful and efficient… from a compelling sub-$40,000 price.” Said Mazda Australia Managing Director Doug Dickson.

The one issue which has slowed sales of the diesel Mazdas has been the lack of an automatic transmission and this problem still continues with the new Mazda6 diesel only offered in a six-speed manual. the Mazda Mr Dickson said the Mazda6’s high-tech new engine makes diesel synonymous with exhilaration.
